IMPHAL, Mar 22: Employees of Manipur government began their indefinite cease-work strike from Thursday, demanding implementation of pay structures recommended by 7th Pay Commission. The JAC had, on Wednesday, announced to commence cease-work strike as state government failed to give positive response towards addressing its demand despite repeated ultimatum. A team of JAC led by its general secretary Laitonjam Biken visited some offices in Imphal and asked the employees not to carry any works. Biken said that even though employees of government offices attended as usual, functioning of the offices were paralyzed as they did not take up any official file. He informed that for the time being employees in the emergency services will not be a part of the cease-work strike. However, they too will join soon if government remains adamant. He maintained that their demand for the implementation of 7th Pay Commission has been going on for years and the state government has been ignoring the demand citing one or other problem.
IMPHAL, Mar 22: Two children were killed after an outbreak of measles in Manipur’s interior Tamenglong district, while over 40 affected by the disease were under medical care. Official reports said that the disease claimed the lives at Phoklong village under Tousem police station of Tamenglong district. Following the report, the medical team from the district headquarters rushed to the village. However, the medical team was reportedly facing problem while attending the infected children as no medicine for treatment of children already infected by the disease was unavailable. M e a n w h i l e, s t a t e health services director Dr K Rajo said that a 12-member medical team from Imphal will leave for the village on March 24 to assist the district medical team. The team will be led by additional director Dr Th Sashikumar, the director said. The Director said that all the preventive measures will be taken in other parts of the state. Health officials and paramedics have been mobilised for doing the needful.
Shillong, Mar 22: The Meghalaya government on Thursday said that it will put all efforts to ensure resumption of coal mining in the state in accordance with environmental rules and regulations. NGT had ordered an interim ban on “rat-hole” coal mining in Meghalaya from April 17, 2014, after All Dimasa Students’ Union and the Dima Hasao District Committee filed an application before the tribunal alleging that the water of the Kopili river was turning acidic due to coal mining in Jaintia Hills. “Coal mining was a traditional form of livelihood in the state and therefore the government would make all efforts to ensure resumption of mining in accordance with the Central environmental rules and regulations,” PWD minister, Prestone Tynsong said. Replying to volley of queries during the Question Hour in the assembly, Tynsong said that the state had incurred loss of Rs. 416 crore in terms of revenue from coal following the NGT ban on coal mining.

to northeast and then to south east Asia. But, Assam holds more advantage than Bengal and our state is the expressway to south east Asia,” Patowary said. As the investment proposals received by both states are yet to materalise, the two states are now locked in a battle for investors and for the role of launch pad of India’s Act East Policy to tap the vast ASEAN market. Patowary said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already declared the northeast at the heart of India’s Act East Policy when he opened the global investors summit here. “The Act East vision is turning real, with PM Modi redefining and reinvigorating the whole policy with regards to ASEAN. It is in this backdrop that the Government of Assam organised the first ever Global Investors’ Summit, ‘Advantage Assam’ in February. The summit was a grand success, attracting attention of leaders both in the fields of business and politics from within the country and abroad, especially ASEAN
NEW DELHI, Mar 22 (Agencies): India is planning to operate flights from the north-eastern state of Assam to Asean countries, including Singapore, through a scheme that subsidises air travel. The move comes amid a growing focus on pushing India’s ties with South-east Asia. Assam’s Minister for the Act East Policy Department Chandra Mohan Patowary told The Straits Times that the federal government and the Assam state government are working on a plan to start routes from Assam’s capital Guwahati to South-east Asian capitals including Hanoi and Singapore. At present, international visitors to the northeast must transit in cities like capital city Delhi or the eastern city of Kolkata. “This will have an economic impact on Assam and the north-east,” Mr Patowary said of the plan at a conference organised by the think-tank Kalinga International Foundation in the city of Bhubaneswar. He said that tenders to award the routes to Indian airlines would likely take place in May. The air connectivity

and BBN countries. The intent shown by the industry in making investments in the focus sectors is indeed encouraging. We received investment proposals of close to Rs one lakh crore,” Patowary said. Patowar y said that Modi has given a further push to the northeast as the centre of Act East Policy after the union cabinet on Wednesday cleared a Rs 3000-crore special package for encouraging the MSME sector, which is the biggest industry segment in the region. “The announcement of the North East Industrial Development Scheme (NEIDS) is not just timely but also greatly supportive of our efforts to bring investment in the state, to create job opportunities and to gainfully employ our boys and girls,” Patowary added. He said that this scheme will go a long way to implement the Act East Policy making the northeast a manufacturing hub for the ASEAN and BBN countries.
project is part of the federal government’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS), which seeks to connect smaller cities and towns by subsidising fares, maintained at 2,500 rupees (S$50) per hour, and reviving old and disused airports and airfields. Rates for the international routes have not been fixed yet but the Assam government is setting aside one billion rupees for the subsidies. The money for the subsidies will come from the federal and state government. Assam, with a population of 30.94 million, is seen as the gateway to India’s north-east region and borders Bangladesh and Bhutan. The northeast is connected to the Indian mainland by a narrow stretch of land known as the Siliguri corridor or “Chicken’s Neck”. Distinct from the rest of India due to its location, connectivity and infrastructure remains poor. Plans to link the area to South-east Asia, including a trilateral highway linking India to Thailand and Myanmar, have been slow.
Analysts say much depends on whether private airliners find it viable to fly from Guwahati to Asean countries. “They are doing this domestically. I am not sure how far it will work out,” said Mr Rajan Mehra, chief executive of private luxury business jet operator Club One Air. “ T h o s e w h o h ave smaller planes will find it difficult to subsidise the seats. The gap that is being bridged (by the governments) is also small. I think the takers will be larger players because they need those with deep pockets and have plans to fly overseas.” Mr Khin Maung Nyo, adviser to the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies, noted that travelling to the northeast from Myanmar is difficult at present. “It is not easy to come to India. I have to take a flight to Thailand and then to India even though Myanmar borders India and is the closest (country) in Asean,” he said. “It (air connectivity) will be a good idea. But one also needs to look at the economic viability.”

AGARTALA, Mar 22 (Agencies): Regional Cancer Centre Superintendent Dr. Goutam Majumder Thursday said that 2,500 new cancer patients are diagnosed every year in Tripura. A report has suggested that 1,458 cancer patients died in 2016 in the state, he said adding that most cancer cases were due to head and neck cancer, reported TNT. Dr. Majumder said 3,786 patients succumbed to cancer from 2014-2016. Among all cancer patients in the state, 40 percent suffer from head and neck cancer mostly caused by chewable tobacco cancer. Tripura tops NE in tobacco consumption in all its forms; 64.5 percent patients admitted using tobacco in a report. A mega health awareness campaign for cancer would be organized here tomorrow as a part of a pan northeast motorcycle ride for cancer awareness. The ride, hosted by Tata Trust, has got a group of motorcyclists travelling from Silchar to Agartala via Guwahati, Tezpur, Itanagar, Dibrugarh, Kohima, Imphal and Aizawl.
He said the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government is likely to adopt another resolution to urge upon the central government to invoke Para 12 A (b) of the Sixth Schedule through a Presidential notification to exempt the state from the central law. “If need be one more official resolution will be brought during this current session where both sides of the house will also be responsible jointly to knock the door of the Centre for lifting of coal ban in our state,” Tynsong said. Recalling that the previous Congress-led government had adopted a resolution urging the Centre to invoke Para 12 A (b) of the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India to ensure resumption of coal mining, he said, “A decision was also taken then that once the resolution is passed, the leader of the House will take a delegation to the Centre on this regard which unfortunately did not happen.” However, Tynsong said that the government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the NGT lift its ban on rat-hole coal mining in the state.
New Delhi, Mar 22 (Agencies): Assam has the highest number of beggars and vagrants among the northeast states, Union minister for social justice Thawar Chand Gehlot informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Assam also has the fourth highest number of women beggars in the country, the minister added in a written reply to the House. Quoting the 2011 Census, Gehlot said Assam has 22,116 destitute people, of which 14,847 are women – double the number of men, 7,269. According to the Census report, there were about 4.13 lakh beggars and homeless people in India. As the data is almost seven years old, the present situation is believed to be worse, according to TNN. Beside Assam, other northeastern states like Manipur, Tripura and Meghalaya, too, showed a similar trend, where women beggars have outnumbered men. “In Tripura, out of 1,490 beggars recorded, 883 were female. Similarly, in Meghalaya, there are 224 female beggars out of a total 396. Manipur has 146 female beggars out of total 263 beggars,” he informed. Of the eight northeastern states,

Mizoram fares the best, with only 53 beggars, including 20 women. Social analysts said the lack of any comprehensive policy addressing the issue of beggary has made the situation worse. The Narendra Modi-led government introduced the Persons in Destitution (Protection, Care and Rehabilitation) Model Bill, 2016, to address the issue of chronic beggary and homelessness in India, but decided to drop the proposal to amend the legislation last year. “At present, there is no central law on begging and most of the states have
either adopted the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, 1959, which criminalises beggary or have modelled their laws on it. In Assam, provisions were made under the social welfare department for providing homes for homeless people. However, more welfare schemes are needed,” said a state social welfare department official. Though sources in state police have denied the prevalence of mafia-controlled begging, rampant human trafficking cases in the region are believed to have contributed to the growing numbers of beggars.

Rajya Sabha adjourned amid sloganeering NEW DELHI, MARCH 22 (IANS): The Rajya Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday shortly after the House met amid an unending Parliament deadlock on the 14th consecutive day of the second half of the budget session. However, the government managed to pass a key legislation that empowers it to fix the period of maternity leave and the tax-free gratuity amount of employees with an executive order. The AIADMK, the TDP and the opposition members came near the Chair’s podium as usual, f launting placards and shouting slogans. Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu asked the agitating members to return to their seats, saying he could not understand why they were creating “ugly scenes” through their conduct. “People are saying as to why the Chairman is adjourning the House. I want to tell them that I don’t want these ugly scenes to be seen by the people. That is why I have been adjourning,” Naidu said over the chaos. “Today some people (from the opposition) said that they want the House to run, but some people have come into the podium. One day, one party does it, other day some other party does

A view of Rajya Sabha. it. What can I do?” Meanwhile, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel said that it was everyone’s responsibility to run the House. “The way this bill (Gratuity bill) has been passed, the other bills should also be passed. There is a long list of business, the other bills need to be passed too. The government is ready for discussion on every issue,” Goel said amid the pandemonium. At one point, both Naidu and Goel were speaking simultaneously over the din being created by the sloganeering members. When the agitating MPs refused to relent, Naidu adjourned the House for the day. Earlier, the Upper House unanimously passed the Payment of Gratuity
(Amendment) Bill, moved by junior Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar, by voice vote without any discussion. Gangwar had requested the members to pass the “important” Bill quickly as the House was not in order to hold any discussion on the legislation. Naidu had sought the cooperation of the members for the passage of the Bill. It had been passed by the Lok Sabha on March 15. But as soon as the Bill was passed, members belonging to the AIADMK, the TDP and the Congress gathered near the Chairman’s podium and began shouting slogans. The Congress, Trinamool and other opposition parties members have been protesting against the rejection of their notices by the Chair for discus-
sion on the multi-thousand crore Punjab National Bank fraud under an adjournment motion. They are also demanding extradition of diamondtaire Nirav Modi who is at the centre of the PNB fraud. The TDP and the YSR Congress have been demonstrating for special status to Andhra Pradesh. The AIADMK has been demanding the setting up of a board for the management of the disputed Cauvery river water. However, the opposition has accused the government of using “friendly parties” like the AIADMK and the TDP to scuttle the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha to avoid discussion on the PNB fraud and other issues. Earlier, as the House assembled for the day, Chairman Naidu greeted
The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Thursday, amid protests as opposition members trooped near the Speaker’s podium, raising slogans and displaying placards. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan first adjourned the House till 12 p.m., minutes after the House met for the day. Members from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and the AIADMK trooped near the Speaker’s podium as soon as the House assembled. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government was ready to debate all issues including the no-confidence motion. “I again appeal to you to go to your place and let the House run. We are ready for debate on any issues... On banking irregularities and also the no-confidence motion. If the House runs, all issues can be discussed,” Kumar said. Speaker Mahajan said she could not take up the motion amid protests as she was not able to count the 50 members.
5 ‘Congress won’t succeed with UPA experiment’ NEW DELHI, MARCH 22 (IANS): The Congress won’t succeed with another UPA experiment as it has lost all credibility and the best way to defeat the BJP in the next Lok Sabha election will be to pool in all anti-BJP votes statewise, the CPI-M has said. “The Congress hopes to build an extended UPA style alliance to counter the BJP,” said an editorial in the CPI-M journal “People’s Democracy” following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s defeat in two Lok Sabha byelections in Uttar Pradesh. “However, this will not succeed. The Congress has no credibility to lead such an alliance in terms of an alternative programme. “There are many regional parties like the BJD in Odisha, the TRS in Telangana and the TDP in Andhra Pradesh who will not accept to be a partner in an alliance with the Congress,” it said. “There are other parties who are chary of accepting the Congress as the leader of the alliance,” the CPI-M added, naming itself as one of them. Similarly, any effort to build a non-BJP, nonCongress “Federal Front” mooted by Telangana Chief Minister K.C. Rao was also bound to fail, the editorial warned.
‘Shared prosperity key to peace in Indo-Pacific region’
NEW DELHI, MARCH 22 (IANS): Minister of State for External Affairs M.J. Akbar on Thursday said that shared prosperity is the key to peace in the Indo-Pacific region, which has emerged as the most prominent source of prosperity in the world. Delivering the keynote address at a workshop on “Strategic Stability in the Indo-Pacific” organised by the Institute of Defence Studies and Analyses think tank and the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, Akbar said that today’s world is very different from what it was a hundred years ago. “In the political spaces that occupies the globe, a hundred years ago in 1919 there were only about 60 to 65 political spaces, you can call them nations or you can call them kingdoms or whatever you want,” he said. “Today, there are around 195 countries. So it is a very different world and a very different phenomenon that we are facing.” Akbar said that this phenomenon has to be recognised by governments and “recognised and corrected by ambitions of governance”. In this, he said different regions in the world will be involved including the Indo-Pacific “which is
going to become, which has already become the most prominent source of prosperity in the world”. “We have to understand that in order to protect prosperity, we can only do it by sharing it, both the prospects as well as the process through which we ensure peace,” he stated. In this context, he stressed on the importance of the Indian concept of SAGAR ( Security and Growth for All in the Region) the subtext of which he said is the concept of seas of freedom and prosperity. Akbar said that cooperation is quite possible within the abilities of the Indo-Pacific region because the rights of sovereignty are enshrined as a global commitment. “So, in order to look for prosperity, you don’t have to conquer anyone,” he said. “You merely have to discuss, you have to get rid of the notion that there are powers and super powers. You have to get rid of the notion that there are big nations and small nations.” Speaking about regional geopolitics, he said to India’s immediate west is “the wall” of Pakistan that blocks trade and countries with governments that did not have full control of their territories because of active militias.

Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Ramdas Aathwale said that apex court judgment was not proper for the Dalit community and he was personally against it. “The government will soon file a review petition against this judgment,” the Republican Party of India chief said in a statement, adding that he personally met BJP President Amit Shah and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on the issue.
these resources to create an economically developed Naga society, there was a need for good infrastructure and skill development plans tailored to market needs and technology that could energise agriculture and allied sectors. He, therefore, stressed giving priority to these sectors and exploring avenues to attract investments from outside the State to undertake projects. He also informed the members that there was a plan to set up Nagaland Investment and Development Authority to bring in Investments, besides organising a business and investment summit to focus on the State’s strengths. Mentioning that agriculture was the soul of Naga culture and all traditions emanate from, Acharya regretted that though the expertise of Nagas in the field of agriculture was unmatched, the farmers got no incentive for increasing production due to marketing constraints. Therefore, he said his government would create proper marketing mechanism, including buy-back facilities, so that the farmers were encouraged to produce
more and were assured of remunerative returns. He also assured that his government would try its best to turn this apparent backwardness into a blessing and would encourage production of high value organic agricultural produce, adding adequate marketing linkages would also be developed to promote export of organic fruits and vegetable. Pointing out that Nagaland was located in one of the 25 bio-diversity hotspot areas of the world, the governor called for strategies for sustainable development of the resources. He said Nagaland’s coffee was appreciated by one and all and exuded confidence that, with plans for developing 5,000 hectares of land for coffee plantation in the State in collaboration with Coffee Board of India, coffee held great potential for augmenting income of farmers. Acharya said, along with eco-tourism, the State had great opportunity for adventure tourism too and added his government would promote home stays and rural tourism that would offer an unparalleled experience to tourists.
To enhance resilience of farmers in the face of climate change and to increase household agricultural income of farmers, the governor said agriculture department was implementing a World Bank-assisted project – Fostering Climate Resilient Upland Farming Systems in the Northeast (FOCUS) – in partnership with International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). He said this project would benefit almost 7,30,000 individuals and 1,46,000 households of about 754 villages in the eight districts of Mon, Longleng, Zunheboto, Wokha, Kiphire, Phek, Mokokchung and Kohima. Acharya said forest department was implementing Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP) with funding from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) with an objective to improve forest ecosystem and support income generation by rehabilitation of jhum area. Stating that the project would be implement-
ed in 185 villages across 11 districts of Nagaland over a period of 10 years, he said it was expected to result in benefits that would include forestry interventions and biodiversity conservation, livelihood improvement and community development and Institutional strengthening leading to augmentation of farmer incomes and environmental conservation. While congratulating the newly-elected members, especially the new comers, the governor remarked that many professionals had joined NLA and exuded confidence that the members would enhance the dignity and decorum of the august House. Hoping that the members would fully seize the tasks that lie ahead and the responsibilities for fulfilling expectations of the electorate, Acharya reminded them that, whether in treasury or opposition, they had a crucial role to play in framing laws and guiding government policy as they represented the views of the

He said Aadhaar linkage would be done to check bogus and fake beneficiaries and also ensure that all government employees attend their work and that a culture of punctuality and timebound disposal of matters would be ensured. The governor said repair and strengthening of roads would be another top priority of his government. He added that it had decided to start immediate repair and renovation of roads and filling of potholes in Kohima, Dimapur and all district headquarters. The ongoing work for four laning of Kohima-Dimapur road measuring 42.86 km being carried out by NFIIDCL at a total cost of Rs 1066.55 crore would be monitored closely to ensure its time bound completion. He added that work on Nagaland portion of Dimapur by-pass sanctioned at a total cost of Rs 387 crore would be followed up closely for timely completion, while survey for Kohima by-pass measuring 36 km in length at a cost of Rs 1,389.80 crore would also be expedited for easing the traffic in Kohima town. Similarly, Acharya said other sanctioned roads like Wokha-Merapani (60 km; Rs. 191 crore), ZunhebotoChakabama (128 km; Rs 1,600 crore), Pfutsero-Phek (66 km; Rs 825 crore), Merangkong-Tamlu -Mon (100 km; Rs 1,250 crore) and Changtonya-Longleng (35
km; Rs 437.5 crore) would be taken up soon. Survey for Simalguri-Mon road had also been initiated, he added. The governor said the government intended to operationalise a web-based monitoring mechanism for supervising all road projects for quality. Emphasizing that, apart from road connectivity, air and rail connectivity too was critical for a remote State like Nagaland, he added that the government would seek improved air connectivity for Dimapur from the Centre under Regional Connectivity Scheme. Further, he said it intended to connect all district headquarters with helicopter service, along with provision for air ambulances and rail connectivity to Kohima, while the work of laying tracks for the 88-km railway line to Zubza would be expedited. On law and order front, Acharya said his government would adopt measures to make the State police force modern and effective by equipping them with more modern weapons, communication system, transport facilities and imparting rigorous training. He further asserted that his government would give priority to employment generation, human resource development and infrastructure-related programmes. He said as the State was endowed with rich mineral resources, salubrious climate, rich bio-diversity and, above all, a unique social capital, and to combine

hen the minister of external affairs Sushma Swaraj informed parliament in 2014 that the 40 Indian migrant workers held hostage by ISIS after Mosul was overrun were alive; the nation breathed a sigh of relief. There were many who thought that the matter need further probe as it was too good to be true that the murderous and blood thirsty ISIS won’t kill those considered as infidels. One of the captured Indians, Harjit Masih from Gurdaspur, had managed to escape and had claimed to have witnessed the massacre of the others. But the government rejected it. Swaraj had earlier made statements in 2014 including one on July 22, 2017, in the Lok Sabha, that “as per the latest information from multiple third-party sources, they are all safe” In 2017, Sushma Swaraj had told the families of the workers that an Iraqi official, quoting intelligence sources, had told VK Singh that the Indians were made to work at a hospital construction site and then shifted to a farm before they were put in a jail in Badush. The victims -- 27 from Punjab, four from Himachal Pradesh, six from Bihar, and two from West Bengal -- were construction workers employed by an Iraqi company in Mosul. The victims were taken hostage when the Islamic State took control of the second-largest city in Iraq. They were trying to leave Mosul when they were abducted. The tragedy also serves to remind migrant workers that several nations where ISIS has made inroads, are uncertain and unsafe. Migrants from India go to the middle east as skilled or semi-skilled labourers and despite the hostile environment such as the sharia law and the presence of terrorists. Yet they continue to go because they have not been discouraged enough. The external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has been given a job without full power and independence. She has to remain in the shadow internationally as Modi hogs the limelight. She also has to share the ministry with people not from political backgrounds like V.K.Singh and M.J.Akbar. With the discovery of the dead bodies four years after Sushma had all along been saying that all of them were alive; her position has become untenable. Sushma should not be blamed for wrong information given but rather the government must come clean as to who was that Iraqi official who passed the information? If true, then why didn’t Sushma tell parliament that the government was unsure about the fate of the migrant workers but was working on information that claimed they were alive? By toeing the line that the workers were alive without verifying the report even as late as in 2017, Sushma committed a big blunder and treaded into the path of misleading parliament. It is still not understood why the government of India did not pursue the matter of the kidnap of the migrant workers with all seriousness? If it did but drew a blank, then it proves the government was not on track. When nations know too well what ISIS did to captives, it was quite naive on the part of the government of India to believe a so-called Iraqi official that all captives were alive. The issue should compel the government of India to formulate proper policies on how to ensure that its citizens don’t fall prey to terror and violence in other countries.
DailyDevotion The Burning Heart Did not our heart burn within us…? -Luke 24:32 We need to learn this secret of the burning heart. Suddenly Jesus appears to us, fires are set ablaze, and we are given wonderful visions; but then we must learn to maintain the secret of the burning heart- a heart that can go through anything. It is the simple, dreary day, with its commonplace duties and people, that smothers the burning heart- unless we have learned the secret of abiding in Jesus. Much of the distress we experience as Christians comes not as the result of sin, but because we are ignorant of the laws of our own nature. For instance, the only test we should use to determine whether or not to allow a particular emotion to run its course in our lives is to examine what the final outcome of that emotion will be. Think it through to its logical conclusion, and if the outcome is something that God would condemn, put a stop to it immediately. But if it is an emotion that has been kindled by the Spirit of God and you don’t allow it to have its way in your life, it will cause a reaction on a lower level than God intended. That is the way unrealistic and overly emotional people are made. And the higher the emotion, the deeper the level of corruption, if it is not exercised on its intended level. If the Spirit of God has stirred you, make as many of your decisions as possible irrevocable, and let the consequences be what they will. We cannot stay forever on the “mount of transfiguration,” basking in the light of our mountaintop experience (see Mark 9:1-9 ). But we must obey the light we received there; we must put it into action. When God gives us a vision, we must transact business with Him at that point, no matter what the cost. We cannot kindle when we will The fire which in the heart resides, The spirit bloweth and is still, In mystery our soul abides; But tasks in hours of insight willed Can be through hours of gloom fulfilled.

hen Pol Pot took over Cambodia, the erstwhile Kampuchea, as Prime Minister under the regime of Khmer Rouge in 1976 and continued till he was overthrown in January 1979, not less than 10 lakhs to 30 lakhs of Cambodians died of forced labour, starvation, disease, torture and execution. Thus, Cambodia was placed in catastrophic genocide under the dictator of Pol Pot in less than 3 years duration. To survive under the regime of Pol Pot, the citizens had to opt an escape route. That option was to tell lies by means of hiding one’s actual identity. Many Cambodians survived during this brief period by simply telling lies and acting against their conscience. The survivors coined that cheat as Broken Courage. In other words, a Cambodian had to survive at that time by committing crime as faking one’s identity is punishable under law. The above story is exactly the situation here in Nagaland. Since Nagaland got the Statehood some 55 years ago in the midst of Naga National Movement for sovereignty, the Nagas had to encounter two gravitational forces of Naga-ism and Indian-ism. Thus, the lay
The Broken Courage
Nagas were sandwiched in between the two juxtaposed forces of Naga Nationalism and Statehood of Nagaland, a unit of the Union of India. Ever since the introduction of Nagaland State Assembly election in 1964, the allegiance of Nagas to Naga political movement was put to test. To participate in state election was anti-thesis to movement for Naga sovereignty and not to be part of it became the contentious issue for survival. That was how Nagas had to survive with broken courage. As history repeats itself, similar events repeated in our land, Nagaland. Whereas, in the just concluded State Assembly elections in Nagaland, we observed that the two gravitational forces virtually ripped through the integrity of each Naga Christian be it full time Church worker or layman. The litmus test for Naga Christians was whether to uphold the Biblical instructions by remaining steadfast against the onslaught of immense flow of money or to succumb to such allurement. And still the worst was compromising one’s Christian faith in support of idol worship. On closer scrutiny, it is found that certain theologians, certain Deacons and certain Prayer Group
members wholeheartedly joined hands with idol worshipers in the last election. This so happened because of their broken courage. Reiterating what I wrote and already published earlier more than once, there is no ambiguity on the question of what is BJP. The Hindutva’s pillar organisations, namely, RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal, etc. are the cornerstones upon which BJP is established and all belonged to Hinduism and of which BJP is the political platform of Hindutva. Under the protection of the political power of BJP, the agenda of Hindutva are promoted throughout India and Nagaland is one of its chief targets being a Christian dominated State. I read the exhortation of Union Minister of State Mr. Kiren Rijiju in Nagaland Post that people do not need to mix politics with religion during his campaign for BJP-NDPP alliance. What was opined by Rijiju is right and constitutional. Yet, his party BJP does not walk the talk. Rather, the reality is that BJP is the pipe through which RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal of Hindutva do operate for Hindunization of India. Indeed, NBCC was forced by BJP to spell out its principle stand under pressure. Now, whether noticed
by one or not, extensive intrusions of RSS with its activities have been here in Nagaland already, and it is obvious that such activities have the patronage from Kohima Raj Bhavan. I read a letter written to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee by BP Acharya, the then Secretary of BJP, NE States Coordination Council which was published in Mid Day on 19.2.1998 and I quote, “We have achieved our avowed object of piercing Trishul in the chest of so called ‘Lord’ Christ”. Unquote. I heard that the Governor BP Acharya was encouraging enterprising Nagas to place the deceased local icons in the limelight. Meanwhile, the PDA abruptly decided to rename the Merema stadium to Dr. T. Ao stadium. Possibly the PDA may like to reopen the chapter of Gaidinliu issue taking advantage of the latest instance. This is how RSS’s tentacles will work in Nagaland in camouflage and not obviously in the name of Ram or Shiva. Whereas, in matters of compatibility between Hinduism and Christianity, again, there is no ambiguity according to Bible. Allow me to remind the esteem readers to look at 2 Corinthians 6: 14-17. The
Living God expects me, His believer how nominal am I, to believe Him 100% and nothing less. To believe Jehovah, I am to ‘separate’ myself from idol worshipers and from gods. The instance of incompatibility even in politics is this. A former BJP member Dr. K. Hoshi published an article in local media last year in which he exposed how Hindu rites are imposed on Naga Christian BJP members and how these Christians succumbed to such idol worships without a noise for fear of repercussion. And how he was the lone member to protest against performing Hindu rites in BJP meetings in Nagaland and eventually walked out and deserted the party. Another former Minister who joined BJP and left it after half a year published his story of sojourn with BJP on 30.3.2016 in Nagaland Post. Find and read it yourself. These leaders know that Christians are to worship the only One and Living God Jehovah (Deut. 5:7) and not to acknowledge any idol. The complacency and the Church’s (all denominations) underestimation on the invasion on Christendom in Nagaland by Hindutva tentacles in hobnob with malleable Heraka sect and
the remnants of animist in the past paved way for the entry of the Hindutva elements in the State. Moreover, during the last 15 years, NPF had provided all the logistic support to BJP to establish its root in Nagaland which was declared for Christ by NNC on 14.7.1947 with the prayer “Thy Kingdom come to Nagaland”. At the moment, there is alliance between BJP and NDPP. Whereas, we, the Christians, have been soft peddling and abetting the accommodation of all Hindutva activities in our land due to our greed for short term gains. Had the Church realized the danger of such threat to the existence of Christianity on time and reasoned with Naga BJP pioneers, the establishment of the party in Nagaland would have been averted. Also, had the Church reasoned with NPF not to be the refuge and sponsor of BJP at that point of time, its growth would have been slower and less menacing or even prevented. Had the Church been as alert and active as the NBCC as of now, no Naga Christian would have dared to ignore the calling of the Church. We failed to stitch on time and nine could not be saved. ‘Naga republic day’ speeches
GPRN/NSCN president, Gen. (Retd) M.B Neokpao Konyak
Gen. (Retd.) Viyalie Metha, Federal Government of Nagaland Dear Countrymen, I extend hearty greetings to each and everyone on behalf of the Federal Government of Nagaland on this auspicious day as we celebrate the 63rd Nagaland Republic Day today. We are thankful to Almighty God for by His grace we stand as a people and a Nation. At the same time, we remember our past leaders and dear ones who had suffered and sacrificed defending our land. We pay our respect and honour to our national heroes and their memory will remain in the annals of our National history. On this occasion of historic national day, it is important that all citizens to recollect and be refreshed as to how history of the Nation began. Our Naga National history can briefly and precisely be enumerated as follows: 1. In the ancient time, our forefathers lived in comfort and happy in their own small domains depending mostly on agriculture. 2. In the 18th Century, the British intruded our territory from the South and South-West of Nagaland. Our forefathers in those Regions resisted and fought many battles from 1832 to 1880 and peace was brought in when verbal agreement was made that the British were allowed to stay on our land on the condition that they don’t disturb our people and our way of life. 3. In the year 1929 a proposal was brought by a British statutory commission called Simon Commission, which was politely turned down in plain written reply by the Nagas saying ‘Nagas will remain as before.’ 4. After the World War II, when the British exit from South Asia was eminent, our leaders under the leadership of A.Z. Phizo, with intent to build up good neighbourly relation and peaceful coexistence, met Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian Nation in 1947 and many other Indian leaders of that time and told them Nagas and Indians are different people and Nagaland is not India’s territory and that there should not be any misunderstanding when India becomes independent. 5. On August 14, 1947 Nagas declared their independence to the world, one day before India attains its independence from their British Rulers.
6. The Naga voluntary Plebiscite was held on May 16th, 1951 where 99.9% voted in favour to remain independent and showed their solidarity. 7. On March 22nd 1956 the Federal Government of Nagaland was established at Parashen in Rengma Region. Thus today we are celebrating the 63rd Nagaland Republic Day. Historical records: At all events of history the British and Indians statements were clear that Nagaland does not belongs to India. We can tell the world the records are clear. And it stands to proof that: 1. Nagas were not subjugated by the British, only they were allowed to stay in parts of Nagaland; British History record Book-Atchison treaties and Sanad it is written ‘no treaty was made with any Naga Tribes.’ 2. No part of Naga territory had taken part in the treaty of Yandabo between the British and Burma. 3. Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian Nation, told Naga leaders when they met him at Bhangi Colony in Delhi, ‘if you say Nagas are not Indian and Nagaland is not Indian Territory, then the matter ends there.’ 4. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the first prime Minister defined ‘Naga Hills Excluded Areas are those long Frontiers of India which are neither part of India nor of Burma nor of Indian states nor of any foreign power.’ 5. The Government of India under the Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru signed the International Cease Fire Agreement with the Federal Government of Nagaland in 1964. All these historical facts stand clear and proofed that Nagaland is not part of India and Nagas are not demanding anything from India or other Nation. Unlawful Activities of India: Meanwhile, India committed many crimes in attempt to annex Nagaland: 1. Knowing full well that Nagaland does not belongs to India, Mr. Nehru tried to divide Naga territories between India and (Burma) Myanmar. 2. In 1953 Mr. Nehru and U Nu, the then Prime Minister of Burma came to Kohima, Nagaland to address Naga public but said he would not listen to Naga opinion, as such the
enraged Naga public walked out leaving the meeting place deserted. 3. India started war with the Nagas by 1955; see the Book ‘My Years with Nehru’ written by Mr. B.M. Mulik, Chief Intelligence Officer 1948-1964. 4. India promulgated and enforced its Black Laws in Nagaland such as Assam maintenance of Public Order 1952 and Armed Forces Special Power Act 1958. 5. Unilaterally abrogated the Indo-Naga Ceasefire Agreement in 1972 and enforced the so-called Unlawful Activities Prevention Act 1972 see Nagaland Gazette. 6. Set up the Secret Code ‘SAMPAT’ co-ordinating Armed Forces and Civil Administration to wipe out the Naga National Council (NNC), the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) and the Naga Army (1972). 7. Set up renegade groups and used them with the objective to exterminate NNC and FGN. India obvious actions were shown to all when India rescued Muivah from Thailand Jail in the year 2000, protects him and his group in Delhi and making big talks but fails to find a way out for a solution with a group. It is not possible to expose all in a day but India’s crimes shall be revealed in due time. Today Nagaland stands where we stood in the beginning that is ‘URRA UVIE’ our land belongs to us. We want India to withdraw her occupational Armed Forces from our land peacefully, because India has no right to occupy Nagaland. The Federal Government of Nagaland maintains peace and continues to honour the IndoNaga Ceasefire Agreement of 1964 hoping India will come to terms with rational and honourable settlement of Indo-Naga conflict without delay. In conclusion, I would like to give a word of caution to our people because the enemy is trying hard to annihilate our people in all manners even our Religion is being put in danger. Let everyone beware and seek God’s guidance. By the grace of God we have withstood all hardships so far and we shall overcome. May God help Nagaland. KUKNALIM.
First of all, I give thanks and honour to our Almighty God for sustaining our lives and guiding our people to stand for correct political vision to thus far. Dear country men and women, I extend my warm 39th Republic Day greetings to all the Nagas residing within the Naga nation and in different parts of the world. In the pages of Naga history, today was the date, when we Nagas declared not only to the government of India but to all nations in the world, that we are also a free people like them, destined to have a Yezhabo (constitution) of its own to govern its own people without being imposed by any other nation. Our expression of this liberty had faced with stiff resistance from the government of India for which Nagas and India have been in military confrontation, largely unnoticed by world community. The conflict is more than 70 years and India remains the aggressor. The Naga national movement has reached at this present stage having undergone world sufferings, loss of lives and property. I take this solemn moment to pay homage to all the Nagas and fellow comrades of different ranks and files in different set up, who had sacrificed their lives defending and upholding the Yezhabo (constitution) of Nagas. Had it not been for their supreme sacrifice and commitment, it would be difficult to even imagine the Naga national movement coming thus far. To my fellow Nagas who had been victims of atrocities and host of Naga national workers serving, my respect for your strength to bear it and unflinching courage to continue with our struggle. Naga national movement is a people’s movement and I am grateful to various Naga civil societies, including tribal bodies and Naga intellectuals for your valuable contribution and Churches of various denominations for your constant prayer and support. It is your selfless contribution that the Naga national movement is still alive. I urge you to continue to uphold and strengthen our people’s rightful national struggle. With the dawn of 21st century saw a paradigm shift in Indo-Naga conflict, with government of India accepting that the Indo-Naga issue is not a military issue but it is a political issue, which
needs a political solution through dialogue. This led to signing of ceasefire agreement between government of India and GPRN/NSCN in 2001. This was a major step towards resolving the long drawn conflict. It was the firm belief of the GPRN/NSCN that without unity within the fragment Naga family, Indo-Naga political solution would be hard to come by. Today we believe the political weather over Naga homeland has changed. There is better understanding among the Naga National Political groups, which the government of India too has understood the ground reality. The GPRN/NSCN appreciate the visionary leaders of other 5 (five) Naga political groups, who had shown courage to shed personal differences and to come together as one in the larger interest of Nagas. This is a selfless act towards building a new nation for our future Naga generation. The Working Committee and government of India had begun its formal political dialogue on 27th of September 2017. We also reassure our people that, honourable and acceptable political solution, as the political talks is on the right track, making good progress with an expectation of positive outcome to be arrived between two entities. GPRN/NSCN is of the firm view that we owe to our future generation, and just as our predecessors had left their legacy of firm historical, political and cultural identity at any cost. The GPRN/NSCN will be walking an extra mile in the pursuit of these objectives, to declare Naga as free people and maintaining its own distinct identity through a political system that fulfils the aspiration and desire of the Nagas. We have reached an agreed principle, the basis of our political existence and upon this preamble, we believe that the Nagas and their ancestral land, the resources above and below the surface, the culture and traditional practice and all customary laws handed down through generations shall be secured. We believe in a relationship between government of India and Nagaland, while the former must acknowledge that the Nagas are masters of their own land. Therefore , it is an urge to all our people to stand united at this juncture and pray for the success of the political talks between the two entities.

We are constantly swamped with our jobs, household chores and other “worldly” errands. Calling Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad a “minister of lies”, Congress on Thursday asked the BJP that if Cambridge Analytica (CA) was involved in stealing data, then why did it take its services and whether it would register an FIR against CA and its Indian arm Ovleno Business Intelligence (OBI). The party also said that Minister of Information and Broadcasting Smriti Irani follwed Cambridge Analtytica on Twitter and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s former IT head, Arvind Gupta -- who currently runs government’s biggest portal (mygov.in) -- had termed CA a “powerful tool”. “BJP government has now become a manufacturer of fake news and an eptiome of posttruth. Why is government not agreeable to compensating the families?” he asked.
CBI files another bank fraud case Data-gate: Controversial firm’s hand in Indian elections
HYDERABAD, MARCH 22 (IANS): Yet another bank fraud has come to light, with the CBI filing a case against Hyderabadbased Totem Infrastructure Ltd for allegedly defrauding a consortium of eight banks led by Union Bank of India (UBI) to the tune of Rs 1,394 crore. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team also carried out raids at several places here after filing the FIR against the firm and its Promoters and Directors Tottempudi Salalith and his wife Tottempudi Kavita. The CBI filed the case on the basis of a complaint filed by UBI which was cheated of Rs 303.84 crore by the firm. “Loan was taken from a consortium of eight banks
including UBI which was the lead bank. Total dues outstanding for the consortium is Rs 1,394.43 crore. This account became NPA on June 30, 2012 after loan and interest payment default,” a CBI official said. Totem Infrastructure was in the business of road projects, water works and building construction. It is alleged that funds were diverted and expenditure was inflated, the official said. On Wednesday, the CBI filed a case against a Chennai-based jeweller, Kanishk Gold Pvt Ltd, for defrauding a consortium of 14 banks led by the State Bank of India to the tune of Rs 824.15 crore in the form of loans that have now been declared as nonperforming asset (NPA).
Indian Navy aircraft crashes in Guj
MUMBAI, MARCH 22 (IANS): An Indian Navys Remotely Piloted Aircraft operating from Porbandar in Gujarat crashed close to an airbase on Thursday morning, an official spokesperson said here. The incident, the cause for which is not known, happened shortly after it took off around 10 a.m. No casualties were reported. According to preliminary information, suspected engine failure could have led to the disaster. In November, a similar aircraft crashed at the Kochi Naval Base soon after take off for a routine sortie from Willingdon Islands.
(From p-1) Prasad pointed out that party leaders remained silent for over five months since media reports on prominent websites said the Congress was planning to engage CA for the 2019 general elections. However, Congress turned the heat on BJP when it claimed of links between BJP and Cambridge Analytica. As an evidence, it said that the former BJP IT data head and current head of MyGov website Arvind Gupta had tweeted in 2017, praising the firm. Congress claimed that the BJP had used the services of Cambridge Analytica (via OBI) and showed the public LinkedIn profile of Sharma. OBI is the Indian arm of Cambridge Analytica, the firm that is at the centre of the row over illegal mining of Facebook data to influence elections.
Sharma had earlier mentioned in his LinkedIn page that he had managed four election campaigns successfully for the ruling party BJP. His profile earlier read, “Achieved target of Mission 272+ by managing Call Centre Management Project- profiling of each and every volunteer/ supporter who had extended his/her support to get involved in our Mission 272+ just by giving missed call, sms or whatsapp to our single nationwide toll free number “07820078200”. Confidentially maintaining the database- Database to be provided constituency wise to BJP Candidate as an additional support for national elections and state elections of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi.” According to a press release issued back on February 2014, this toll free number was launched as
the ‘NamoNumber initiative as a part of India272+, the Volunteering Portal for BJP’s Campaign for the general elections of 2014. JD (U) denies link: JD (U) leader K.C. Tyagi denied that his son Amrish has received any help from the company Cambridge Analytica. “There was only a work relation between Amrish’s company and Cambridge Analytics. There is no financial transaction or shareholding (by us in the data mining firm).” Several reports had suggested a connection between OBI, owned by Amrish, and Cambridge Analytics. “JD(U) also has no links with this, neither did they promote us in the 2010 polls,” he told reporters. “If my son has committed a mistake, I would want the Indian government to take action against him,” Tyagi said.

NEW DELHI, MARCH 22 (IANS): In a relief to RJD chief Lalu Prasad’s son Tej Pratap Yadav, the CBI on Thursday told the Supreme Court that it did not find anything against him in the murder of journalist Rajdeo Ranjan. The Central Bureau of Investigation told the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice A.M.Khanwilkar and Justice D.Y.Chandrachud that an investigation of two accused persons, Mohammed Kaif and Javed, was ongoing. The CBI’s statement was in response to a plea made by the journalist’s widow Asha Ranjan seeking a probe against Tej Pratap, a former Bihar Health Minister. Disposing off the plea, the court allowed her to approach the Patna High Court if she finds anything against Tej Pratap at a later stage. Rajdeo Ranjan was gunned down in Siwan district while returning from office on May 13, 2016.

Didn’t you know they were involved in stealing data?” Surjewala said. The Congress party also said: “Didn’t BJP use the services of CA’s Indian arm OBI during its election campaign in four states -- Jharkhand, Haryana, Maharashtra and Delhi? Didn’t BJP’s former IT head Arvind Gupta praise the company?” “Gupta said CA is a ‘powerful tool’ and when used correctly can provide deep insights and fine-tune communication and outreach strategy,” Surjewla noted. “If CA steals data, then why is Smriti Irani following the company on Twitter? Are thieves being followed by ministers. Will he assure the country that he will lodge an FIR against CA, OBI and SCL (Strategic Communications Laboratories) -- CA’s parent company?” he further said.
NEW DELHI, MARCH 22 (IANS): Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday said the Modi government had for years lied about the fate of 39 Indians killed in Iraq and was now diverting public attention from it by alleging that his party had links with a firm accused of misusing personal data of Facebook users. “Problem: 39 Indians dead; Government on the mat, caught lying. Solution: Invent story on Congress and data theft. Result: Media networks bite bait; 39 Indians vanish from radar. Problem solved,” Gandhi said in a tweet. Gandhi’s remarks came a day after Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad accused the Congress of compromising national security by roping in political data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica to run its 2019 election campaign. The Minister alleged that the firm had been found involved in data manipulation and warned that any attempt to misuse social media to influence India’s electoral process would not be tolerated. He also refuted Gandhi’s allegation that by raking up CA issue, Modi government was trying to divert public attention from its “lie about the fate of 39 Indians killed in Iraq”. “We expect that Rahul Gandhi would not indulge in politics over deaths. He should respond to the allegations which are of serious nature,” he said. A senior government official had earlier said that the government wants to provide tax-free gratuity of Rs 20 lakh to organised sector workers at par with the central government. The Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, was enacted to provide for gratuity payment to employees engaged in factories, mines, oilfields, plantations, ports, railway companies, shops or other establishments. The law is applicable to employees, who have completed at least five years of continuous service in an establishment that has 10 or more persons. The amendment will also allow the central government to notify the maternity leave period for “female employees as deemed to be in continuous service in place of existing twelve weeks”.

Maldivian President ends state of Emergency M A L E , M A RC H 2 2 (IANS): Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen on Thursday lifted a widely denounced state of Emergency after a period of 45 days, stating that the situation in the atoll nation had returned to normal. “Upon the advice of the security services and in an effort to promote normalcy, the President has decided to lift the state of Emergency,” President Yameen’s office said in a statement. The President’s international spokesperson Ibrahim Shihab said all departments had been notified. The state of Emergency was declared by Yameen on February 5 for a period of 15 days due to a “threat to the national security” following a Supreme Court ruling ordering the release of detained opposition leaders including self-exiled

former President Mohamed Nasheed. It was extended via a resolution of Parliament on February 20 for 30 days following a request by the President. During the 45-day state of Emergency, the government said day-to-day activities of the citizens had not been affected and tourists could continue to visit the island nation. Meanwhile, several members of Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) detained under
Zuckerberg apologises for data debacle, says ready to testify
Mark Zuckerberg (File)
S A N F R A N C I S C O, MARCH 22 (IANS): Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologised for the data debacle that has upended the social media giant and said he was ready to testify before Congress, a media report said. “The short answer is I’m happy to if it’s the right thing to do,” Zuckerberg said in a CNN interview on Wednesday night. “What we try to do is send the person at Facebook who will have the most knowledge. “If that’s me, then I am happy to go,” he added. Although Facebook employs a small army of lawyers and lobbyists in Washington, Zuckerberg himself has never testified before a congressional committee. Politicians have called for Zuckerberg to testify before their legislative bodies in the five days since the Cambridge Analytica
scandal erupted. The data firm, which has ties to President Donald Trump’s campaign, reportedly accessed information from about 50 million Facebook users without their knowledge, CNN reported. Facebook has said that the data was initially collected by a professor for academic purposes in line with its rules. The information was later transferred to third parties, including Cambridge Analytica, in violation of Facebook’s policies. Zuckerberg broke his silence on the issue earlier on Wednesday with a post on his personal Facebook page laying out a series of steps the company would take to better protect user data. “I want to share an update on the Cambridge Analytica situation -- including the steps we have already taken and our next steps to address this important issue. I’ve been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again,” the CEO wrote. “The good news is that the most important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago. But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to step up and do it,” he added.
Emergency powers were released without charge, the Maldives Independent reported. MDP Vice President Mohamed Shifaz, former MP Ilyas Labeeb and several council members were arrested in the build-up to the March 16 mass protest after police alleged there were plans to overthrow the government by inciting unrest and violence in the capital. With constitutional due process rights suspended, the detainees were not informed of charges or taken against them. Their release came ahead of the expiry of the 45-day state of Emergency on Thursday night. According to the opposition, around 60 people were arrested since the declaration of Emergency on February 5. The Emergency was widely condemned internationally including by the US and India.
Twitter’s chief info security officer quits S A N F R A N C I S C O, MARCH 22 (IANS): As tech companies reel under mounting pressure to prevent their platforms from data breach and fake news, Twitter’s Chief Information Security Officer Michael Coates has decided to quit. In a tweet on Thursday, Coates who joined Twitter in 2015 announced his departure from the microblogging website. “Twitter has been an amazing ride, but as I mentioned internally a few weeks back, my time is coming to an end. I’m confident to leave the program with an amazing security team,” Coates tweeted. According to The Verge, Coates’ interim replacement is Joseph Camilleri, a senior manager for information security and risk. Coates’ departure comes soon after reports surfaced that Facebook’s Chief Information Security Officer Alex Stamos is planning to leave the company by August. Facebook is facing the heat after Cambridge Analytica, a British consulting company, was accused of harvesting data of up to 50 million Facebook users without permission and using the data to help politicians, including US President Donald Trump and the Brexit campaign.
international 6 dead in chemical plant explosion in Czech Republic PRAGUE, MARCH 22 (IANS): At least six people died in an explosion at a chemical plant near the Czech Republic’s capital on Thursday, firefighters said. The explosion took place in the morning at a Unipetrol facility in the town of Kralupy nad Vltavou, north of Prague, the BBC reported. The cause of the explosion was not yet known. “We have received information about six dead and several others seriously injured,” fire service spokeswoman Vladimira Kerekova told CTK news agency. In a brief statement, Unipetrol said a fire broke out in a storage tank and that there was no further danger. Czech TV said there was no risk to residents in Kralupy as the town was some distance from the plant. Unipetrol is one of the largest oil distributing companies and producer of plastics in the Czech Republic.

Libya funding: No evidence against me, says Sarkozy PA R I S, M A RC H 2 2 (IANS): Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy said on Thursday there is no evidence to support allegations that he illegally accepted money from late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance his 2007 election campaign. “I am accused without any physical evidence,” Sarkozy told magistrates, according to Le Figaro newspaper. The 63-year-old former President was placed under formal investigation for the illicit election campaign financing, misappropriation of Libyan public funds and passive corruption. However, the leader of France from 2007 till 2012 denied any wrongdoing and said that the allegations were making his life “hell”. The centre-right politician, who was in police custody being questioned for two days this week, said his Libyan accusers were seeking vengeance for his decision to deploy French warplanes during the uprising which overthrew
Nicolas Sarkozy
Gaddafi in 2011, the BBC reported. Sarkozy said in a statement to the court said he was aware the allegations against him were “serious”, but that they amounted to “slander”. He was allowed home on Wednesday night under bail conditions. The former President was also been placed under judicial supervision, a step investigators in France take to limit the movements of a suspect, CNN reported citing a source. It was not clear what specific restrictions were placed on him. In July 2012, shortly after he was ousted from
China sells Pak missile technology
File photo of highly sensitive tracking missile.
BEIJING, MARCH 22 (IANS): China has sold a highly-sensitive tracking system to Pakistan, which could boost Islamabads ability to develop multi-war heads. According to the South China Morning Post, an influential Chinese think tank says that China is the first country to have given such sensitive equipment to Pakistan. China is the biggest arms supplier to Pakistan, India’s arch-rival. Zheng Mengwei, a researcher with the China Academy of Sciences (CAS) Institute of Optics and Electronics in Chengdu, Sichuan province, told the Post that Pakistan’s military recently deployed the Chinese-made system “at a firing range” for use in testing and developing its new missiles. The statement from the CAS said the Chinese team enjoyed VIP treat-
ment during the nearly three months it spent in Pakistan assembling and calibrating the tracking system and training technical staff on how to use it. “The system’s performance surpassed the user’s expectations,” it said. The amount paid by Islamabad was not known. An optical system is crucial in missile testing. It usually comes with a pair of high-performance telescopes equipped with a laser ranger, high-speed camera, infrared detector and a centralized computer system that captures and follows moving targets, the Post said. The device records high-resolution images of a missile’s departure from its launcher, stage separation, tail flame and, after the missile re-enters the atmosphere, the trajectory of the warheads it releases. The uniqueness of the Chinese-made system lay

in its use of four telescope units, “more than normally required”, Zheng said. Each telescope, with a detection range of several hundred km, is positioned in a different location, with their timing synchronized precisely with atomic clocks. Together, the telescopes provide visual information of unprecedented detail and accuracy, which missile developers can use to improve designs and engine performance. Using more telescopes allows the system to track more warheads simultaneously from different angles, reducing the risk of losing a target. “We simply gave them a pair of eyes. They can use them to look at whatever they want to see, even the Moon,” he said.
office by the Socialist François Hollande, police raided Sarkozy’s home as part of an investigation into alleged illegal assistance from L’Oréal heiress Liliane Bettencourt during the 2007 election campaign. Those charges were dropped in 2013, but another investigation was opened the following year, and in February 2017 a judge ordered Sarkozy to face trial. That came after an embarrassing loss for Sarkozy as an attempt to return to frontline politics saw him finish third in the Republican party’s presidential
primary. Jean-Yves Dupeux, attorney for Brice Hortefeux -- a former Interior Minister under Sarkozy who spent 15 hours on Tuesday being grilled by the same anti-corruption investigators -- told the BFMTV channel that the police fired at least 200 questions at his client, who categorically denied that Sarkozy had benefited from Libyan campaign financing. Sarkozy vehemently denied the allegations, including ones levelled by Ziad Takieddine, a FrenchLebanese businessman and arms broker. In November 2016, Takieddine told French news website Mediapart that he personally transported $6 million in cash from Tripoli to Paris and hand-delivered those funds to Sarkozy, the Interior Minister at the time, and to Claude Gueant. Gueant, who was the director of Sarkozy’s 2007 campaign, is also facing charges in the Libyan funding case.
Pakistan and Russia wary of rising IS threat ISLAMABAD, MARCH 22 (IANS): Pakistani and Russian counter-terrorism officials expressed grave concern over the rising threat posed by the Islamic State in the region, officials said on Thursday. The Pakistan-Russia Joint Working Group (JWG) on Counter-Terrorism on Wednesday discussed a wide-ranging agenda covering the counter-terrorism situation at the regional and global level, action taken by both countries to tackle the menace of terrorism as well as bilateral cooperation on the issue. The two sides reaffirmed the commitment for promoting bilateral cooperation for countering terrorism and agreed to cooperate at the United Nations and
other international fora for combating terrorism, a foreign ministry statement said. “There wa s broa d agreement on the fact that terrorism was a common global threat which required cooperative efforts of the international community for effectively eradicating it,” the statement said. “While major successes had been achieved in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, the returning IS fighters from the conflict zones to countries of origin or third countries constituted a major security threat to various parts of the world, including this region. It was important for countries of the region to cooperate to counter this threat,” the statement said.

The man who supported Barack Obama through two terms at the White House commented: “A guy who ended up becoming our national leader said: ‘I can grab a woman anywhere and she likes it.’ “If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.” Biden added that any man who disrespected women was “usually the fattest, ugliest S.O.B. in the room”.

Rim set to break Ozzy Osbourne files antitrust Pacific Black Panther streak lawsuit against AEG
O
zzy Osbourne has filed an antitrust l aw s u i t a g a i n s t venue owner and concert promoter Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc. (AEG) for a policy that allegedly requires that acts booked at London’s O2 Arena must also perform as part of the same tour cycle at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Both venues are owned by AEG. The lawsuit accuses AEG of “anticompetitive conduct - specifically, tying - by Anschutz Entertainment Group, Inc. (“AEG”) and certain subsidiary and affiliate entities.” Specifi-
cally, the complaint refers to a “Staples Center Commitment,” where “AEG requires that artists and musicians cannot play London’s most essential large concert venue - the O2 Arena (“O2”) - unless they agree to play the Staples Center (“Staples”) during the part of their tours that takes place in Los Angeles.” According to the suit, earlier this year Osbourne’s UK promoter Live Nation requested to book a date at O2 in February 2019 for the singer’s final tour, dubbed No More Tours 2. Last month, Sharon Osbourne accused AEG Pres-
ents Chairman and CEO Jay Marciano of trying to “strong-arm an artist into playing a venue they’re not comfortable performing in” in an email, which is included in the complaint. Marciano responded that the “dispute is between The Forum and Staples Center,” according to the complaint. As Billboard reports, the tying of O2 and Staples Center bookings was reportedly in response to a similar alleged tying of Madison Square Garden and The Forum bookings. Live Nation UK chairman Denis Desmond filed a complaint last year against AEG with the Competition and Marketing Authority (CMA), “arguing they violated British competition and anti-trust laws,” according to Billboard. However, CMA said that because the dispute began in Los Angeles, it should be argued in California. (Rolling Stone)

niversal and Legendary’s “Pacific Rim Uprising” - the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 “Pacific Rim” - is aiming to score from $22 million to $29 million at around 3,700 locations at this weekend’s domestic box office. Though it would be a smaller debut than its predecessor, that would likely be enough to take down Marvel powerhouse “Black Panther” following its rare five-weekend reign. Steven S. DeKnight cowrote and directed “Pacific Rim Uprising” with a reported $150 million budget. The original, which starred Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam, and Robert Kazinsky, opened with $37 million
in July 2013. It went on to gross $411 million at the worldwide box office, thanks to a strong international showing, especially in China, where it made $112 million compared to the U.S.’ $101.8 million. The sequel is set 10 years after the Battle of the Breach with a new generation of Jaeger pilots ready to combat the evolving Kaiju monsters and prevent humanity’s extinction. John Boyega plays Jake Pentecost, the son of Elba’s character Stacker Pentecost, who sacrificed his life in the first film. The cast also includes Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Kikuchi, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona, and Day. (Variety)
Nagaland Post, Dimapur FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2018
Angus Young writing new AC/DC album with Axl Rose
G
uitar legend Angus Young is reportedly at work on a new AC/DC album with Axl Rose. The Guns N’ Roses frontman has leant his services to the band as touring singer in recent years, after Brian Johnson was forced to retire from performing after suffering from hearing loss. After reports emerged earlier this year that the partnership between Young and Rose would be set to continue, Rose Tattoo frontman Angry Anderson has confirmed that the pair are currently writing new material together. “I was talking to Angus earlier last year when we were doing the encores and we were opening for Guns ‘n’ Roses, but Angus and I were asked to do the encores and I said to him ‘What are you going to do?’ and he said ‘Mate I’m writing a new album’,” he told The Rockpit. “I thought ‘cool’ so I asked him who was in the band and he said ‘Axl’.”
Following the sad death of founder and guitarist Malcolm Young, as well as the departure of Johnson, Phil Rudd and Cliff Williams, Anderson lamented the absence of the original line-up - but celebrated that fans would soon be able to hear new AC/DC music. “There are these people, and yes it’s sad that the original line-up aren’t there any more but it’s the songs, people who have supported them all the way through their career they want to hear the songs,” he continued. “And in a sense we owe that to people, so really it’s a
debt of gratitude and what we’re saying is you’ve stood by us, we’ll stand by you. “So Angus, and let’s face it he doesn’t need the money, he acknowledges that there are still millions of people around the world that want to hear AC/DC songs played live. In the same way, though on a much lesser scale obviously there are plenty of people around the world who want to hear the songs that made Rose Tattoo famous. They want to hear those songs played live. And this is a line-up that can do that.” (NME)

DNA,” Bhasin told IANS. “So even when these old Punjabi songs are sung by different singers over generations, they are still with us by that common emotional thread running through it over the years. And above all, its amazing how the entire country responds to that emotional connect and thus that music,” she added. Which one is her favourite rendition? “It’s really very difficult to pick one. Each rendition has some
connection that I am very attached to. But if I absolutely had to pick one -- it would be a close tie between ‘Madhaniya and ‘Chitta kukkad’. “Both are very emotional for me, especially ‘Madhaniya’, which has a deep connect in my heart from my family, my mother to me leaving home at a very early age. It was sung at my sisters ‘vidai’. It’s a song that really stirs my soul.” The “Jag ghoomeya” hitmaker thanks her team for supporting her.
“All thanks to the fabulous team I have. Prayrit Seth, my director has worked with me on most of my songs and videos. It’s a very organic process for him and me to conceptualise and brainstorm on how to present our work. We listen to a song and see what it connects best with,” she said. Explaining the process of recreating the song, she said: “Because I grew up listening to and watching loads of pop/pop rock vid-
eos, I’m very influenced by the 1990s. So, I always want to find a way to include that visual within that quintessential artistic form, thereby connecting the traditional vibe and the modern sound. “Amidst that, we also
like to create a contrast in our videos to include elements creating a pop new age vibe interwoven with an old retro zing. I love fashion and he loves stylised videos, so we both live our fantasies through these beautiful videos.” (IANS)

Commissioned by Northwestern University’s Center on Media and Human Development, researchers discovered that “71% of teens and young adults found the show relatable, and nearly three-quarters of teen and young adult viewers said the show made them feel more comfortable processing tough topics,” Brian Wright, vice president of original series, said in a press release. Additionally, the study reported that “more than half of teens reached out to someone to apologize for how they had treated them, and nearly three-quarters of teens said they tried to be more considerate about how they treated others after watching the show.” As a result of these findings, Netflix announced new steps it will take for the show’s second season, most notably a warning video featuring the starts that will air before the first episode of each season. Women’s T20 Tri-series: Aus beat India
Indian batswoman Anuja Patil plays a shot in the opening match against Australia during the Women’s T20I Tri-series at Brabourne stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. (PTI)
thus maintained their unbeaten record on tour having outclassed the hosts 3-0 in the ODI series. While the for mat changed from 50 to 20 overs but the familiar middle-order collapse still continued.
Opener Smriti Mandhana once again struck a stylish 67 off 41 balls, helping India post a decent total of 152 for five in 20 overs. In reply, Australia equalled their highest-ever chase in shortest format, comfortably winning in
Miami Open: Serena out in first round
Williams was knocked out in round three of Indian Wells her first tournament since having a baby.
Miami (US), Mar 22 (IANS): Japan’s Naomi Osaka, fresh from winning the biggest title of her career this month at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, California, defeated an out-of-sorts Serena Williams 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the second round of the Miami Open. The 20-year-old Osaka, who was born to a Haitian father and a Japanese mother and grew up in the United States, broke the 23-time Grand Slam champion in the seventh game and then
finished off the first set with yet another break of serve here on Wednesday, reports Efe news agency. Osaka, who broke Williams’ serve on two more occasions in the second set, was clearly the sharper of the two players considering that Serena was playing just her fourth WTA match in the past 12 months. But the 22ndranked Osaka also showed she could match her opponent in the power department and most notably on the serve, ending the match with more aces (seven to
three) and winning a higher percentage of first-serve points (78 percent to 76 percent). She faced just two break points in the match and saved both of them. Williams’ rust was apparent whenever she had to put in a second serve and enter a baseline rally, as was reflected in her 31 percent winning percentage on second-serve points. The American went from bad to worse during the one-hour, 17-minute contest and appeared to be shocked at the routine shots she missed to lose her serve in the final game, including a wild forehand well over the baseline on match point. Next up in the second round of this hard-court event for Osaka, who is unseeded at the Miami Open because she was ranked outside of the top 40 until her strong result in Indian Wells, will be fourth seed Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
18.1 overs despite a fine effort by veteran Jhulan Goswami (3/30), who unfortunately lacked support from the other end. The biggest problem was that save Goswami, the other two seamers Shikha Pandey (0/25 in 2 overs) and Rumeli Dhar (0/28 in 2.1 overs). Indian bowlers bowled too many boundary-balls with as many 21 fours and six were taken off them. Chasing 153, Australia women were in trouble at one point of time 29 for 2 as Goswami struck in her first and the third over, cleaning up ‘keeper-opener Alyssa Healy (4) and Ashleigh Gardner (15). But that did not deter other opener Beth Mooney (45 off 32 balls) from playing her shots. She found an able partner in Villani (39 off 33 balls) as they added 79 runs for the third wicket. Earlier, Mandhana struck 11 boundaries and two sixes but India failed
to capitalise on a strong platform provided by her and Mithali Raj (18 off 27 balls). They added 72 runs in 9.3 overs. The hosts scored 47 in the Powerplay as Mandhana played shots all around the park en route her career-best score in T20 cricket. After that the Australians stormed back into the game picking two quick wickets of Jemmimah Rodrigues (1), falling to a short delivery and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (13) to a bad shot. It was a cameo from Anuja Patil (35 off 21 balls) that propelled the hosts past the 140-run-mark as they ended with 152/5, the highest score for the hosts against the Aussies. AUCKLAND, Mar 22 (Agencies): Captain Kane Williamson’s unbeaten 91 set New Zealand up for a commanding lead after England were skittled for one of the lowest scores in their history in the first Test in Auckland on Thursday. At stumps on day one in the first day-night Test in New Zealand, the Black Caps were 175 for three and 117 runs ahead with seven wickets in hand.England were left red-faced when they failed to cope with a swing bowling masterclass by Trent Boult and Tim Southee to be all out for just 58 after a mere 20.4 overs in Auckland. They were flirting with the world-record low of 26, set by New Zealand on the same ground against England in 1955, until number nine batsman Craig Overton spared their blushes with an unbeaten 33 at the end. Apar t from Stuar t
Broad taking his 400th Test wicket it was a bleak day for the tourists, who registered their sixth lowest total in Tests. But for New Zealand, Williamson commanded the Test from the moment he won the toss and opted to bowl. He featured in the field with a superb diving catch in the gully to remove Broad, and ended the day closing in on a new record for New Zealand Test centuries. He currently shares the record of 17 centuries with Ross Taylor and the late Martin Crowe. Williamson went to the middle after the early dismissal of Jeet Raval, when New Zealand were one for eight, and put on 84 with Tom Latham for the second wicket. Latham had made a patient 26 off 112 deliveries but when play entered the difficult daylight-to-twilight zone he was gone in the first over after dinner to give Broad his milestone scalp.

M U M BAI , M a r 2 2 (Agencies): Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami has got a major boost after he was cleared by the BCCI of match-fixing charges levelled against him by his wife Hasin Jahan, who had claimed that the cricketer had received unaccounted money from a Pakistani woman. With this development the path has been cleared for his participation with Delhi Daredevils in the IPL starting April 7. BCCI will now proceed with offering him a Grade ‘B’ annual retainership contract, which will make him richer by Rs 3 crore, reported TOI. Shami has taken 110 wickets in the 30 Tests he played so far while accounted 91 scalps in 50 ODIs. Shami also featured in 7 T20Is in which he managed eight wickets. BCCI had decided to withhold Shami’s contract after Jahan made a series of allegations, includ-
ing adultery and domestic violence, and lodged a police complaint against him. Shami has denied all the allegations. “The Hon’ble Supreme Court of India appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) had requested Neeraj Kumar, former Police Commissioner of Delhi and Head of BCCI Anti-Corruption Unit, to investigate the allegations against Mohd. Shami in so far as they pertain to the provisions of BCCI AntiCorruption Code,” BCCI said. “Neeraj Kumar has submitted his confidential report to the CoA. Based on the conclusions in the said report, the CoA is of the view that no further actions/ proceedings under BCCI anti-corruption code are warranted in the matter. “For this reason, BCCI shall proceed with offering a Grade ‘B’ annual retainership contract to Mohd. Shami,” the release further stated.

Williamson had a nervous moment on 64 when Chris Woakes claimed a straight drive from Taylor had deflected off his hand to the stumps, with Williamson backing up out of his crease. But replays proved inconclusive and the third umpire
ruled in favour of the batsman. Taylor never looked completely at ease and on 20 he was caught at mid-wicket by Woakes to give England’s most successful Test bowler, James Anderson, his 525th career dismissal. Henry Nicholls joined Williamson
and was unbeaten on 24 at stumps with the pair putting on 52 for the fourth wicket. Boult, who finished the England innings with a career-best six for 32, started their downfall when he had Alastair Cook out for five in the fifth over.

India handed easy draw in Thomas and Uber Finals NEW DELHI, Mar 22 (PTI): India will fancy their chances of reaching the knockout stage after getting relatively easy draws at the BWF Thomas and Uber Cup Finals to be held in Bangkok from May 20 to 27. Both India men’s and women’s teams have been placed in Group A in both Thomas Cup as well as Uber Cup, the draw of which was completed in Bangkok on Thursday. While Indian women’s team, which reached the semifinals in the last two editions, has been clubbed with five-time champions Japan, Canada and Australia in the Uber Cup, the men’s team has been drawn alongside nine-time winners China, France and Australia in the Group A of Thomas Cup. India is seeded 5/8th in both the events. The top two teams in each group at the end of the group stage will make it to the knock-out round, which means India have to ensure they don’t goof up against the lower-ranked teams in their respective groups.

CWG: IOA, Sports Ministry at loggerheads New Delhi, Mar 22 (Agencies): Less than two weeks before the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Gold Coast, Australia, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the Sports Ministry are at loggerheads over approving names of officials in the Indian contingent. The IOA held an official send-off ceremony for the contingent at a city hotel here on Thursday, but the battle between the IOA and Sports Ministry hogged the limelight as the IOA president, Narinder Batra, and Secretary General, Rajeev Mehta, had to answer some tough questions, reported Zeenews. The bone of contention largely seems to be the names under the head ‘Extra Officials’ in the list sent out by the IOA to the Sports Ministry. “We haven’t yet had an official confirmation from
the Ministry, but to do this just 15 days from the Games is absurd,” said Batra. “Having said that, I am merely a postman. The federations send us the list. We simply forward it to the Ministry for approval. “But to delete names of physiotherapists is hard to believe as they are required to keep the athletes fit and free of injury,” the IOA president added. According to sources, the only physiotherapist part of the squash team has been struck off by the Ministry, besides two managers, a physio and a masseuse in the table tennis contingent. Names of two physios part of the wrestling squad have also been removed. It has also been learnt that the name of Indian contingent’s Chief Medical Officer has also been removed by the Ministry.
