Some of these “variants of concern” had earlier been detected abroad. The ministry, however, said it could not be sufficiently established yet if these variants were behind the recent spike in COVID19 cases in some states. It said genome sequencing by Indian SARSCoV-2 Consor tium on Genomics (INSACOG) has identified variants of concerns (VOCs) in several states and a new double mutant variant. Genomic sequencing and epidemiological studies are continuing to further analyse the situation. The

DMC revises poultry rates Staff Reporter

Disclosing this to Nagaland Post, DMC administrator Albert Ezung said the council had agreed to raise the rates in Dimapur subject to review whenever there was either increase or decrease in wholesale prices. According to a release, DMC administrator has issued the revised rates as under: Rs.160 per kg (live
broiler chicken), Rs.230 per kg (dressed broiler chicken), Rs.200 per kg (layer or kuroiler chicken). It may be recalled that poultry traders in Assam had increased wholesale rate from Rs. 100-120 to Rs. 155 to 160 per kilogram. DMC had earlier fixed rates for poultry at Rs. 140 for live weight and Rs. 180 for dressed meat. Ezung also disclosed that poultry dealers were also told that DMC rates have to be strictly adhered to failing which appropriate action would be taken against violators as per provisions of Municipal Act through cancellation of trade license and imposition of heavy penalty.

Fuel prices slashed after a 24-day hiatus DIMAPUR, MAR 24 (NPN): Petrol and diesel prices were cut for the first time in 2021 after a 24-day hiatus following a steep decline in global crude oil prices. State-owned oil marketing companies (OMCs) on Wednesday slashed fuel prices by 18 paise (petrol), and 17 paise (diesel) respectively. With the revision in price, petrol in Dimapur is retailing at Rs. 90.01 a litre and in Kohima at Rs. 90.92, while diesel is retailing at Rs. 83.54 per litre in Dimapur and in Kohima a litre of diesel is priced at Rs. 84.27. Across the country as well, the petrol and diesel price fell with the quantum varying on the level of local levies on respective states.
Weaker Sections (EWS) and those from Low and Middle Income Groups are eligible for credit-linked interest subsidy. The subsidy is to be claimed by financing institutions - like DHFL - that have granted these loans. According to the CBI, in December 2018 DHFL told investors it had processed 88,651 loans under PMAY and received Rs. 539.4 crore in subsidies, with a further Rs. 1,347.8 crore due. However, forensic audits revealed that Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan had opened 2.6 lakh fake housing loan accounts - several of which were under the PMAY scheme and claimed interest subsidies as per its rules - in a fictitious Bandra branch of the organisation. Between 2007 and 2019 ‘loans’ amounting to
Rs. 14,046 crore were sanctioned to these accounts, the CBI has alleged, of which Rs. 11,755.79 were routed to other fictitious firms. In June last year the CBI filed a chargesheet against the Wadhawan brothers and Yes Bank founder Rana Kapoor, after it was alleged that Kapoor’s family received kickbacks for investing in DHFL. That scam took place between April and June in 2018 when Yes Bank invested Rs. 3,700 crore of public money in short-term debentures of DHFL. In return, the Wadhawans allegedly paid kickback of Rs. 600 crore to Kapoor in the form of loans to a firm controlled by his wife and daughters. The Wadhawan brothers were arrested in April last year. Kapoor was arrested in March.

GPRN/NSCN refutes allegation DIMAPUR, MAR 24 (NPN): Under the leadership of its chairman MB Neokpao Konyak and ato kilonser N Kitovi Zhimomi, GPRN/ NSCN expressed deep sorrow over the killing of three “Zeliang brothers” by unknown assailants and strongly condemned it. GPRN/NSCN through its MIP however said it was very unfortunate that some prominent Zeliang leaders had expressed their views on the unfortunate loss of lives through tribal and factional angle. Citing the news report of a local channel, which stated that Zeme Council Nagaland president had accused GPRN/NSCN cadres
of committing the act, GPRN/NSCN said this was totally uncalled for and a blatant attempt to tarnish the good relations between GPRN/NSCN and Zeliangrong people. It categorically denied any involvement, either by its civil or military workers, in the incident. GPRN/NSCN claimed that it was the only Naga political group which understood and recognised the legitimate right of Zeliangrong people in Nagaland, Manipur or Assam, adding that this was demonstrated by the fact that a Zeliangrong representative attends all Indo-Naga political talks. (Cont’d on p-8)
Orgns flay Mar 22 incident, demand action DIMAPUR, MAR 24 (NPN): Various organisations such as NPF, CSOs etc have condemned the March 22 violence along DimapurPeren border when three persons were killed and also demanded action against the perpetrators. NPF: In a statement, NPF Press Bureau strongly condemned the brutal killing of three persons belonging to Zeliang community and described them as “merciless and inhuman killing of innocent lives” which was not acceptable.NPF has also demanded that befitting punishment be awarded to those involved. NPF pointed out that the situation in the area had been tense since the past days and the unwanted situation could have been averted had the PDA government been more sincere and vigilant. While appreciating the setting up of a Special Investigating Team
(SIT) by the State Government NPF also demanded that the government give a specific timeframe to people to settle the matter and book the culprits. The party also demanded that if the state government failed to do so within the specific timeframe, then the home minister should resign on moral ground. NPF also wondered whether the PDA government was even aware of the many random killings, extortion, corruption and other criminal activities going on in the State, or whether it considered all these as a trend to be ignored? It also reminded the government of its duty to provide security and deliver justice to people and therefore, demanded that the law enforcing agencies look into the Lamhainamdi village incident with utmost sincerity, book the culprits and deliver justice to the victims
within a timeframe. NPF also conveyed its deepest condolences to the bereaved family members and prayed that the departed soul rest in eternal peace. Pe r e n Z e l i a n g r o n g CSOs: A joint statement issued by Nagaland Zeliang People’s Organisation president Kevipelie Iheilung, Zeliangrong Baudi Nagaland president CR Zeliang and Zeme Council Nagaland president Dr Tumda Newme stated that Zeliangrong civil society organisations (CSOs) of Peren district held an emergency meeting at Jalukie town on Wednesday and adopted several resolutions after the March 22 killing of three persons. The Trinamool Congress has even launched the ‘Bangla Nijer MeyekeChaye’ (Bengal wants its own daughter) campaign, with party leaders calling BJP functionaries visiting the state as “election tourists”. The prime minister said that Banerjee insulted the people of Nandigram with false accusations, and people would give her a befitting reply. “You are maligning
Nandigram and its people before the entire country. This is the same Nandigram that gave you so much. The people of Nandigram will not forgive you and will give you a befitting reply,” he said, apparently referring to the March 10 incident in which the chief minister was injured. Banerjee had alleged that a conspiracy was hatched to attack her ahead of the elections to derail her poll campaign. Modi said that BJP would make every scheme in the state scam-free and bring in transparency, hitting out at the TMC over ‘cut money’, ‘tolabaji’ (extortion) and ground-level corruption. “We (Centre) had sent relief for the Amphan affected areas. But the funds were looted through the ‘Bhaipo (nephew) window’,” he said, attacking TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of the chief minister. Encroachment drive
M
ost government-owned lands in Nagaland spread over many districts, since the 80s, have been either totally encroached upon or under constant encroachment by individuals or groups which have negated development. In a recent case the Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry(DoVAH) under Medziphema, in a statement, claimed that it was facing “continued rampant encroachment” around its training institute, piggery, cattle and poultry farms including its fodder field meant for feeding cattle. The department in Medziphema has admitted that it was facing a losing battle in holding on to the land upon. It said that due to continual encroachment, normal functioning of the premier veterinary institutes are being disturbed and presently in danger of being lost. If that happens then the farms including the training institutes etc will no longer be able to function and the biggest loser of all will be not the department alone but the entire people. When many states are clamouring for setting up of livestock farming including agro and allied training institutes and offering huge lands for establishing them, in Nagaland it is just the opposite. This is the main reason why development and progress in Nagaland has taken a back seat. The same fate befell the veterinary & animal husbandry department in Dimapur and today, the department has been left with small patches of land and surrounded by several colonies which have come up. The then government high school Dimapur (presently government higher secondary school) campus has also been systemically encroached. Educational institutes that are supposed to be the crucibles of not only education but also a legacy for the future generation. Many other government colonies in Dimapur, have also turned into privatise colonies with new names. Also even presently, in some areas, some individuals have constructed temporary structures over road in order to claim and justify compensation. Even forest lands are being encroached and later legalised. Privatisation of government lands and buildings take place not only in Dimapur or Kohima but also in other districts. One of the reasons why government lands are being systematically encroached is due to a nexus between some department employees with land revenue staff under the blessings of powerful politicians and bureaucrats. The other is that most departments don’t maintain proper records of lands in their possession. Others do not bother to obtain official allotment or patta but merely possess the lands on the strength of ‘gift’ or ‘sale’ deeds executed. The process of laying claim to government land happens when ‘No Objection Certificate’ is issued on account of excess land occupied or being certified as ‘Unutilised’. Current chief minister Neiphiu Rio had stated in Dimapur in 2007, that the state government has formed a committee to look into encroachment problem in the state. However, what the committee recommended is not known as nothing more was heard of it. People in general also do not feel any sense of responsibility in safeguarding government land, property or movable articles. Unless this attitude changes there can never be progress in real terms. Probably people think that the government is there to bring funds for development and ignore that about people and their government have to ensure they get development by acting as responsible custodians.
DailyDevotion Decreasing for His Purpose
He must increase, but I must decrease. —John 3:30 If you become a necessity to someone else’s life, you are out of God’s will. As a servant, your primary responsibility is to be a “friend of the bridegroom” (John 3:29). When you see a person who is close to grasping the claims of Jesus Christ, you know that your influence has been used in the right direction. And when you begin to see that person in the middle of a difficult and painful struggle, don’t try to prevent it, but pray that his difficulty will grow even ten times stronger, until no power on earth or in hell could hold him away from Jesus Christ. Over and over again, we try to be amateur providences in someone’s life. We are indeed amateurs, coming in and actually preventing God’s will and saying, “This person should not have to experience this difficulty.” Instead of being friends of the Bridegroom, our sympathy gets in the way. One day that person will say to us, “You are a thief; you stole my desire to follow Jesus, and because of you I lost sight of Him.” Beware of rejoicing with someone over the wrong thing, but always look to rejoice over the right thing. “…the friend of the bridegroom…rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:29-30). This was spoken with joy, not with sadness— at last they were to see the Bridegroom! And John said this was his joy. It represents a stepping aside, an absolute removal of the servant, never to be thought of again. Listen intently with your entire being until you hear the Bridegroom’s voice in the life of another person. And never give any thought to what devastation, difficulties, or sickness it will bring. Just rejoice with godly excitement that His voice has been heard. You may often have to watch Jesus Christ wreck a life before He saves it (see Matthew 10:34).

Post-mortem
India’s true self-reliant entrepreneurs A
tmanirbharata is India’s new econ o m i c p o l i c y. Nirbharata means reliance, and atma means the self. The Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, announced by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, following the lockdown announced on March 24, 2020, calls for India’s economic mission to be based on selfreliance. Recently, the PM extolled the virtues of the private sector over the public sector, emphasising the services it provides, the employment it generates and its contribution to reducing poverty. Atmanirbharta rests on a particular idea of entrepreneurship. The notion of entrepreneurship goes back to classical political economy: Economists Richard Cantillon and Jean-Baptiste Say emphasised risk-taking and initiative to exploit opportunities with an eye to financial gain. The word “entrepreneur” in French means “to grab” or “take control” but it also has elements of “adventurer” in English and “self-motivated” from the
Sanskrit atmaprerna. So the classic vision of an entrepreneur is an individual actor who is able to take risks, weigh pros and cons, make quick decisions and staying afloat while riding out the highs and lows of market forces. They should be tenacious and play the long game and build businesses that not only make them richer but benefit employees and others too. In more recent times, the economist Joseph Schumpeter emphasised the need for the entrepreneur to be innovative, able to think of a new way of doing things. Today, many economists consider such innovation needs a whole micro-climate to thrive, of angel investments, bank loans, regulatory mechanisms, bankruptcy laws, and basic infrastructure. In the PM’s vision, Atmanirbhar Bharat would be based on five pillars: Economy, infrastructure, technology, demography and demand. This seemed an acknowledgement that the self in self-reliance was not an atomised self-
maximising individual, but one engaged in complex relationships, aiming to grow and fly high among the dense network of community, market and State, and given a safety net if the risk-taking failed. On the same day that the PM promised benefits of Atmanirbharta, Vinod Kumar, a young man from Uttar Pradesh, was found walking home, a journey of 1,500 kms. He had left Mumbai to return to his village after the lockdown because, as he told journalist Barkha Dutt, if he was going to die anyway, he may as well die at home. He had a BSc degree, but finding no prospects in his state had migrated to Mumbai, where he worked as a street hawker. In other words, Vinod Kumar was an entrepreneur. But Vinod and millions of other Indians, who take risks and travel far looking for work and opportunity, are not called entrepreneurs but only the less glamorous “migrant worker”. The pandemic should force us to rethink these distinctions. India’s migrant work-
ers, part of the broader vast group of informal workers, are a key component in the engine that keeps India’s economy growing. They construct new buildings, repair cars, drive taxis, manufacture tools, clean homes, make products and take on almost any work that will pay a wage. They live on daily earnings, have a small stock of rations, and try and save enough to invest in a better future. They travel to India’s cities but return regularly to rural homes to help with harvests, vote and maintain social bonds. The scholar Jan Breman calls them “footloose labour”, constantly on the move in search of opportunities. And it is just as well they do, for, without them, there would be no Indian economy. This demographic of 100 million citizens are estimated to make up about one-fifth of India’s total workforce have no security of income, employment, or benefits of paid leave or health care. Their abundant numbers make their supply seem-
ingly inexhaustible. No wonder little thought was given how they would cope when the country was locked down at a notice of four hours. No transport, no emergency rations, not even drinking water was made available. Footloose labour was simply cut loose. But this absence of any support from the three pillars on which our lives rest — State, community and market — revealed the real essence of India’s migrant entrepreneurs. Remarkably few blamed the government or their employers, despite the complete mismanagement of trains and transport. Instead, the risks and benefits of undertaking an arduous journey were carefully weighed and decisions, quickly and boldly taken. Their only reliable assets were their own two feet; so they took control of their situation by walking home, surviving by remarkable ingenuity in the face of the toughest odds. As their own accounts during the journey reveal, they supported each other,
travelling in groups, sharing food and information, creating solidarity and their own safety nets. Oxford Languages, in recognition of the PM’s use of the term, announced Atmanirbharta as the Hindi Word of the Year 2020 because it “validated the day-to-day achievement of the countless Indians who dealt with and survived the perils of a pandemic”. Yet recent reports of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan announced with fanfare the arrival of Apple, Amazon and Tesla to help India’s recovery. If there is one lesson from lockdown, it is that the entrepreneurial spirit dwells not just in corporate corridors but on the dusty roads trodden by the millions who have atmanirbharata and atmaprerna at the core of their atma. They are among our most valuable of resources and should be nourished and supported, not used and discarded at will or just paid lip service to in speeches. Vaccine diplomacy winning India new friends and goodwill
I
ndia’s vaccine diplomacy is moving at a trot and has set the pace for countering the Covid-19 pandemic. It was indeed a big boost when, as part of the first virtual Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (QSD) leaders’ meeting on March 12, US President Joe Biden, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga decided to help India produce at least one billion vaccine doses for the Asia-Pacific region. The Quad initiative aims to reduce manufacturing backlog, speed up vaccination, and defeat some Coronavirus mutations. The funding would be from the US and Japan and logistical help would come from Australia. South Block claims that India has now become a “vaccine superpower” in tackling the COVID-19 crisis. The new orientation is in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s significant foreign policy approach at projecting India as a global stakeholder. A Wall Street Journal (WSJ) editorial has praised
India for its Covid diplomacy. “India has emerged the surprise leader of the global vaccine diplomacy race. It has exported three times more doses than it’s given its own citizens and can spare even more without hurting its own rollout”, Eric Bellman of WSJ tweeted. New Delhi has not only managed to thwart China’s Covid diplomacy but also overtaken it. According to the United Nations (UN), India has made more vaccine donations than China, with over eight million doses given away, compared to 7.3 million from China. Both are making vaccines for the rest of the world in addition to getting their vast populations inoculated. Chinese premier Xi Jinping has called Chinese medical supplies to the ‘Health Silk Road,’ a part of China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, it plans to provide free vaccines to 69 countries and sell them to 28. India, too, has adopted vaccine diplomacy as part of its foreign policy. External Affairs
Minister S Jaishankar declared in Parliament last week that the ‘Vaccine Maitri (Vaccine friendship)’ programme has “raised India’s standing and generated great international goodwill.” Giving details, the Minister said, “In fact, we supplied 150 nations with medicines, 82 of them as grants by India. As (the production of) our own masks, PPEs and diagnostic kits grew, we made them available to other nations. This generous approach... was also extended to the ‘Vande Bharat Mission.’ Starting from Wuhan, we brought back nationals of other countries while looking after our own.” “Acting East” and “acting fast” is the new mantra for South Block. The Modi Government’s vaccine initiative got a boost, particularly in the neighbouring countries. For instance, strained ties with Nepal, Bangladesh, the Maldives and Sri Lanka have improved after a timely vaccine supply. Indicating the importance of this, Sri Lanka and Dominica’s leaders personally
received Indian-made vaccines at the airport, and the Mongolian Prime Minister took the Indian vaccine. All these initiatives were possible because India’s massive pharmaceutical industry accounts for about 20 per cent of the world’s generic medicines and more than 60 per cent of all global vaccine production. In fact, India administered 29.74 million doses of the antiCOVID shots to its own citizens by March 15 and the inoculation drive is in full swing. However, the rising number of variants and a second surge of Covid in States like Maharashtra, Punjab, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu is causing concern. There are some concerns about vaccine diplomacy, too, in a few quarters. The first is whether India will be able to meet the demand and the second is whether the vaccine diplomacy is taking place at the expense of the citizens of the country? Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan is confident that the Government has addressed these concerns.
The Serum Institute of India (SII) — which produces the Novavax and the AstraZeneca vaccines — recently raised concerns about raw material shortages. Its Chief Executive Officer, Adar Poonawalla, alleged, “The sharing of these raw materials is going to become a critical limiting factor — nobody has been able to address this so far.” Another Indian manufacturer, Biological E, which produces the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, has also raised similar concerns. The other worry is that the country is lagging behind its target. However, there is optimism that other vaccines in the pipeline might ease this burden. Overall, the covid diplomacy so far has yielded goodwill for India and won it some new friends. One can’t blame South Block for riding on the new initiative. As The New York Times says, the Covid-19 vaccine is the latest diplomatic currency. Kalyani Shankar The writer is a senior journalist. (The views expressed are personal)

Women stands at the front lines of the Covid-19 crisis and plays an equal role as Healthcare workers, caregivers, innovators, community organizers and as some of the most exemplary and effective National leaders in combating the Pandemic. The crisis has highlighted both the contributions and the disproportionate burdens that women carry. Leadership is not a position or a title, its an action and an example. As Covid-19 continues to effect the lives and livelihood around the world, we can see that the Pandemic and its economic fall out are having an regressive effect on gender equality. Women leaders and organizations have demonstrated their skills, knowledge and networks to effectively lead in Covid-19 response and recovery efforts. Today there is more acceptance than ever that women bring different experiences, perspectives and skills to the table, and make irreplaceable policies and laws that works better for all. They play no less role than that of men. Infact, majority of the countries that have been more successful in stemming the tide of Covid-19 Pandemic and responding to its Health and broader socio-economic impacts are headed by women. The analysis of 194 countries as per the World Economic Forum suggests that the difference is real and may be explained by the proactive and coordinated policy responses adopted by female leaders, proving they performed better, experiencing fewer cases as well as fewer deaths. The incident, coming in the backdrop of the saffron party reaching out to Christians in the state, is being seen by Kerala BJP leaders as a setback for their bid to win the community’s votes in certain segments like Kanjirappally and Thrissur. The party’s top leaders campaigning in Kerala had met Bishops of Catholic

Speaking in support of the Finance Bill, the former finance minister of Bihar dared the opposition to raise the matter in the GST Council, saying no chief minister or finance minister from non-NDA ruled states has opposed any decision of the GST Council. The Centre and states collectively collect over Rs 5 lakh crore tax on petroleum products, Modi said. Ambani bomb scare: NIA invokes UAPA against Waze
NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (IANS): The Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) on Wednesday announced the results of a survey on vaccine preferences, which showed that Russia is the most trusted vaccine producer alongside the US and Sputnik V being the most recognisable vaccine. According to ‘YouGov’ survey on 9,417 respondents from nine countries, 54 per cent of respondents considered Russia the most trusted vaccine producer alongside the US and leaving the UK behind, when asked to choose the three countries they trusted the most to produce a vaccine. Sputnik V, the world’s first registered vaccine against coronavirus, is the most recognizable one over 7 in 10 (74 per cent) of those surveyed have heard of the Russian vaccine. The survey was conducted between February 18 and March 3 by YouGov, the leading UKbased company in market research and data analytics in Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. Residents of India, Brazil, Mexico, the Philippines, Vietnam, Argentina, Algeria, the UAE and Serbia participated in the poll. More than 2 billion people, or over 25 per cent of the world’s population, live in these countries. “We have received a very good response from the Indian respondents in this YouGov survey.
Sputnik V is the most recognisable vaccine in India (57 per cent of respondents), ahead of Pfizer and AstraZeneca, not only because of its safety and high efficacy, but also because of its differentiating features, such as ease of transportation and storage and affordable price, fully meet expectation of Indian respondents”, said Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund. “In fact, Sputnik V ranked first among foreign vaccines as the most trustworthy. In addition, the fact that India is emerging as the most important manufacturing hub for Sputnik V further boosted the confidence of the people of the country in the Russian vaccine,” he said. Key findings of the poll are that Russia is the most trusted vaccine producing country, alongside the US and leaving the UK behind. When asked to choose the three countries they trusted the most to produce a vaccine in three respondents (33%) among those who have made their choice, would prefer to be vaccinated with Sputnik V. This is the second most-preferred vaccine after Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine (37 per cent). About 74 per cent of those surveyed have heard of the Russian vaccine; Pfizer/ BioNTech is in second place (69 per cent), while AstraZeneca (University of Oxford) holds third position with 60 per cent.
MUMBAI, MAR 24 (AGENCIES): NIA Wednesday invoked the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against suspended Police officer Sachin Waze in the case related to the recovery of a Scorpio with explosives near Mukesh Ambani’s house. Waze was arrested on March 13 by the NIA for his alleged role in the Ambani residence bomb threat case. Last week, NIA told a special court in Mumbai that Waze was not cooperating in the probe against him and was insisting on his lawyer during interrogation. NIA opposed it stating that it would “frustrate” the basic purpose of police custody and that access to legal counsel in private cannot be claimed as a general right.

SC dismisses complaint of Andhra Pradesh CM against top court judge NEW DELHI, MAR 24 (PTI): The Supreme Court Wednesday said it has dismissed the complaint of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy against a senior top court judge after giving it “due consideration”. It said however that all the matters dealt with under the in-house procedure being “strictly confidential in nature, are not liable to be made public”. The statement posted on apex court website said, “A complaint dated October 6, 2020 sent by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh to the Supreme Court was dealt with under the In House Procedure and the same, on due consideration, stands dismissed. It be noted
that all the matters dealt with under the In-House Procedure being strictly confidential in nature, are not liable to be made public”. On October 6, in an unprecedented move Reddy wrote a letter to Chief Justice of India Bobde alleging that a senior Supreme Court judge has been influencing the sittings of Andhra Pradesh High Court and acting in the interests of Telugu Desam Party (TDP). He has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh High Court was being used to “destabilise and topple my democratically elected government”. Reddy had requested the CJI to look into the matter and consider initiating steps “as may be considered fit and proper to ensure that
the state judiciary’s neutrality is maintained”. Reddy had alleged that the senior apex court judge had proximity to Chandrababu Naidu and that a “former judge of the honourable Supreme Court placed this fact on record”.

He said the Centre and states together earn over Rs 5 lakh crore annually from tax on petroleum products. “People in the opposition make fun of the GST regime and someone has also said it is ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’. If you have the courage....all states have a presence there ... (Congress-ruled) Chhattisgarh or Rajasthan, no chief minister or finance minister has ever opposed the GST structure. “It is easy to make statements outside, but you need courage as displayed by Narendra Modi to implement the GST. Had there been any other prime minister, he would not have been able to implement the GST,” Sushil Modi told the House.

K A N J I R A P PA L LY / THIRUVALLA (KER), MAR 24 (PTI): The alleged harassment of nuns belonging to a Kerala-based congregation in Uttar Pradesh recently had its echo in the poll-bound southern state on Wednesday, with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan taking it up with the Centre and Home Minister Amit Shah promising strong action. While Vijayan flagged concerns of freedom of individual rights in the incident, Shah pointed out that Uttar Pradesh was a BJP-ruled state and promised to bring before the law, those behind the incident. According to officials in Jhansi, the nuns were detained on March 19 after local Bajrang Dal activists complained that two women were allegedly being taken forcibly for religious conversion.

Mumbai, Mar 24 (IANS): The Indian stock market witnessed a freefall on Wednesday with the BSE Sensex losing over 800 points. The decline in the domestic market took place in line with the global selloff. Heavy selling pressure was witnessed in banking, finance, metal and auto stocks. Globally, stock markets were weignhed on by the concerns of rising coronavirus cases and prospects of restrictions in Europe. Further, the Union Health Ministry’s statement on Wednesday that a total of 771 variants of concerns (VOCs) have been detected in a total of 10,787 positive samples shared by the states and Union Territories also weighed on the market sentiments during the later part of the trade, analysts said. The Sensex closed at 49,180.31, lower by 871.13 points, or 1.74 per cent, from its previous close of 50,051.44. It had opened at 49,786.47 and touched an intra-day high of 49,854.58 M/S. this Rs 7,500 additional burden would pose a challenge as its finances are already overstretched given the stimulus measures and less than anticipated levels of revenue collections in wake of the pandemic. For banks also it would mean further strain on their finances as already their NPA level is expected to shoot to post lifting of restriction on accounting for loans turning into NPA post imposition of moratorium on loan repayment. “The sharing of the liability between the Centre and banks would reduce the load but the court could be re-approached to give a relook at the matter as earlier relief was meant for MSMEs and small borrowers that were affected the most during the lockdown,” said a banking sector analyst asking not to be named. It is estimated that NPA may rise by over one per cent after banks start recognising loans that were extended moratorium last year.

Mumbai, Mar 24 (PTI): The rupee weakened by another 12 paise to close at 72.55 (provisional) against the US dollar on Wednesday, weighed down by a massive selloff in domestic equities and spike in global crude oil prices. Besides, strengthening American currency in the overseas market amid foreign fund outflows also impacted the domestic unit, forex dealers said. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit opened weak at 72.51 against the US dollar. During the session, it swung between a high of 72.51 and a low of 72.69. The rupee finally settled at 72.55, registering a fall of 12 paise over its previous close.
Excluding the relief for loans upto Rs 2 crore (estimated to cost around Rs 6,500 crore), an additional relief of about Rs 7,500 crore will need to be provided to borrowers. Under the series of pandemic relief measures, the RBI had on March 27, 2020 issued the circular which allowed lending institutions to grant a moratorium on payment of instalments of term loans falling due between March 1, 2020, and May 31, 2020. Later, the moratorium was extended till August 31 this year. However, the same had to be repaid after the moratorium, including payment of compounding interest (interest in interest) on dues for the said period. This was

This follows the Supreme Court’s observation given on Tuesday where it noted that the RBI and the government have not provided any rationale for the overall borrower’s debt cap of Rs 2 crore for waiver of interest on interest and directed them to provide such relief to borrowers with overall exposure of over Rs 2 crore as well. Sources said that the government wants to collect individual bank data to assess the total liability on the sector to reimburse interest on interest collected on loan exposure over Rs 2 crore for the period between March-August 2020. This would help it in devising a plan how to reimburse such interest for borrowers who have exposure of over Rs 2 crore with banks. Initial thinking, said sources in the know, is to look at 50-50 sharing of

Myanmar: 628 prisoners released Israel vote deadlock: Netanyahu Five shot dead in Mandalay
Several full buses drove from Yangon’s notorious Insein Prison. Myanmar state television said 628 people had been released. (AP)
Jerusalem, Mar 24 (AP): Uncertainty hovered over the outcome of Israel’s parliamentary election Wednesday, with both Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and sworn political rivals determined to depose him apparently lacking a clear path to a governing coalition. Deadlock in the 120seat parliament was a real possibility a day after the election, which had been dominated by Netanyahu’s polarising leadership. With about 87.5 per cent of the vote counted by Wednesday morning, Netanyahu’s Likud party and its ultra-Orthodox and far-right allies fell short of a 61-seat majority — even if the Yamina party of Netanyahu ally-turnedcritic Naftali Bennett were to join a Netanyahu-led government. Bennett has refused to endorse either side. At the same time, a small Arab party emerged as a potential kingmaker on Wednesday morning after

the latest count indicated it would cross the threshold to get into parliament. Like Bennett, the head of the Ra’am party, Mansour Abbas, has not ruled out joining either camp. A fifth election also remains an option if neither camp can form a coalition. In that case, Netanyahu would remain a caretaker prime minister heading for a corruption trial and a confrontation with US President Joe Biden over Iran. The final tally of the votes cast at regular polling stations is expected later Wednesday. But even then, much
could still change under Israel’s whipsaw politics. The elections commission was still counting about 450,000 ballots from voters who cast them outside their home polling place. The initial results showed the country as deeply divided as ever, with an array of small sectarian parties dominating the parliament. The results also signalled a continuing shift of the Israeli electorate toward the right wing, which supports West Bank settlements and opposes concessions in peace talks with the Palestinians. That trend was highlighted by the strong showing of an ultranationalist anti-Arab religious party. After three previous inconclusive elections, Netanyahu had been hoping for a decisive victory that would allow him to form a government with his traditional ultra-Orthodox and hard-line nationalist allies and seek immunity from corruption charges.
S Y D N E Y, M A R 2 4 (AGENCIES): Australian authorities issued fresh flood evacuation orders for parts of the east coast on Wednesday, and warned that water levels would keep rising in some areas, even as Sydney woke up to clear skies for the first time in several days, reports Reuters. Wild weather systems have drenched the country’s east, prompting tens of thousands of evacuations, especially in the hardest hit state of New South Wales (NSW) where dams continue to overflow and rivers bulge. NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said 6,000 more people were evacuated in the last 24 hours and that new evacuation orders had been issued for residents in Sydney’s western regions to move to safe zones. “What we still have to be aware fact that thousands of people are still on evacuation warnings, that catchments will continue to experience flows of water not seen in 50 years and in some places 100 years,” Berejiklian told reporters in Sydney.
YA N G O N, M A R 2 4 (AGENCIES): Witnesses said hundreds imprisoned after last month’s coup were freed on Wednesday in what appeared to be the first gesture by Myanmar’s military to placate persistent protesters, reports Indian Express. Several full buses drove from Yangon’s notorious Insein Prison. Myanmar state television said 628 people had been released. Most of them were students previously held at
police stations and prisons, reported the news portal Myanmar Now. The Associated Press said one of its journalists, photographer Thein Zaw, had told his family that he was being released. He had been among nine media workers taken into custody during a February 27 street protest in Yangon and charged with violating public order law. In all, about 40 journalists have been detained since the military’s Febru-

India, US agree to re-establish 4 arrested after violent protest in Britain Considering executive actions on gun safety: WH Homeland Security Dialogue Washington, Mar 24 (PTI): The Biden administration has announced the re-establishment of the Homeland Security Dialogue with India that was discontinued by the previous Trump dispensation. This comes a day after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas spoke with India’s Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Monday and expressed his desire to further strengthen the partnership between India and his department. “Mayorkas and Sandhu agreed to re-establish the US-India Homeland Security Dialogue and to discuss important issues such as cybersecurity, emerging technology and addressing violent extremism,” according to a readout of the meeting issued on Tuesday. It is rare for the department to issue a readout of the secretary’s meeting with a foreign envoy. “During
their discussion, they highlighted the positive engagement that has already taken place during the Biden Administration, including with the Quad, which addressed concrete commitments to cooperate on COVID-19, climate actions, and cybersecurity,” said the readout. Mayorkas and Sandhu also recognised the important contributions of students and entrepreneurs that have made both countries stronger, it said. An initiative of the Obama administration, the first India-US Homeland Security Dialogue was held in May 2011. The then Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano had travelled to India to take part in the dialogue with her then Indian counterpart Home Minister P Chidambaram. The second India-US Homeland Security Dialogue was held in Washington DC in 2013, between Napolitano and the then Home Minister Sushil Kumar.
B’desh’s Twitter-FB war with Pak ahead of Modi visit
File photo of Sheikh Haseena with Narendra Modi.
Dhaka, Mar 24 (IANS): A fierce social media ‘war’ has erupted between proLiberation Bangladeshis and the Pakistanis resenting Bangladesh’s much vaunted progress and growing relations with India ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country. Modi will be the Guest of Honour at the Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh Independence on March 26, the day in 1971 when Pakistan’s brutal army started ‘Operation Searchlight’, a genocidal campaign to stamp out the Bengali revolt for Independence. Islamist radical groups like Hifazat have threatened to block Modi’s entry into Dhaka city from the airport, prompting furious security preparations by Bangladesh security forces. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered tough action against anyone trying to disrupt Modi’s visit . Modi’s visit is significant because it comes at a time when bilateral rela-
tions have peaked, despite occasional hiccups. There is also promise of mutual growth on the horizon with a latest World Bank report suggesting that India and Bangladesh can augment their national incomes by 8 to 10 per cent in a few years if the two neighbours can ensure “seamless transport connectivity”. The visit also comes at a time when Bangladesh has achieved ‘Developing Nation’ status , up from Least Developed Country (LDC) category . The UN citation announcing that upgrade is a testimony to Bangladesh’s success in national building through practice of moderate Islam, tolerance of other religions, abiding faith in liberal Bengali culture and its syncretic traditions and focus on economic growth and human development. This is stark contrast to Pakistan’s slide in economy and society with analysts across the world suggesting it has all the bearings of a failed state. And all because
of the Pakistani state and its powerful army’s obsession in using terrorism as an instrument of national policy and its lopsided defence spending at the cost of neglect for infrastructure and social sector investments. The Twitter war has been sparked by some Bangladeshi radicals backing the Hifazat-e-Islam’s announcement to stop “ Modi from entering Dhaka.” Pro-liberation forces who express gratitude to India for its role in Bangladesh’s liberation promptly denounced the Hifazat move as an ‘evil ploy’ by Pakistani intelligence ISI to disrupt not only Modi’s visit but also the celebrations of 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s independence. They also attacked Hifazat-Khilafat leaders as ‘powerhungry’ and ‘traders of religion’. Some tweets and Facebook posts also showcased Bangladesh’s economic and human development achievements cited in top global publications like ‘Diplomat’ and ‘Wall Street Journal’ and contrasted this with Pakistan’s downslide. That provoked a strong riposte from Pakistani Twitterati and Facebookers with some presenting absolute cooked up statistics to show Pakistan was ahead of Bangladesh in many respects. Bangladesh’s net warriors shot back immediately asking uncomfortable questions.

London, M ar 2 4 (IANS): At least 14 people have been arrested following a second “Kill the Bill” protest in Bristol in three days, the police said on Wednesday. The Tuesday protest of about 200 people in Bristol, in the south-west of England, finished after officers “enforced Covid19 legislation”, DPA news agency reported citing the police. “A total of 14 people were arrested for offences including breaches of Covid-19 legislation and obstruction of a highway,” the statement said, adding that one of those detained was also arrested in connection to a Sunday demonstration -- also over the new police bill -- that turned violent. A bill currently making its way through British parliament could see the police being given more powers during protests. The proposed law foresees a new offence of
Washington, Mar 24 (IANS): White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that the Joe Biden administration is considering taking executive actions on gun safety measures. “We are certainly considering a range of levers, including working through legislation, including executive actions to address, obviously, you know, not just gun safety A bill currently making its way through British parliament could measures but violence in communities, so that has see the police being given more powers during protests. “intentionally or recklessly causing public nuisance,” which could see people facing jail time or a fine if found guilty. Chief Superintendent Claire Armes said that additional resources from neighbouring forces were brought in to safely end the protest, which was taking place in breach of “legislation in place to protect public health.”
Aimes said it was “disappointing” that officers had to take action after protesters refused to move on “on a day we should be remembering all those who’ve lost their lives to Covid-19 over the past year.” She said it was “unacceptable” for people to insult efforts made by communities in Bristol to defeat the virus.

Mandera, Mar 24 (IANS): At least four passengers were killed and dozens injured when the bus in which they were travelling in struck a roadside bomb in Kenya’s Mandera County on Wednesday, officials said. The bus was en route to the town of Mandera from the town of Lafey, said Mandera County Governor Ali Roba. Rono Bunei, Kenya’s northeastern regional police commander, confirmed the incident, adding police officers have been dispatched to the scene to hunt for those behind the incident, Xinhua reported. Witnesses said the bus was extensively damaged after it landed on impact. Local police said the number of casualties may increase. The bombing came a day after local security agents foiled an attempt by suspected Al-Shabaab militants to attack a police camp in Lafey.
ary 1 coup. Thein Zaw told AP by phone that the judge handling his case had dropped all charges against him because he has been doing his job at the time of his arrest. He had photographed police charging toward anti-coup protesters. At least 2,000 people have been arrested since the coup, according to the activist group The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP).
On Tuesday in Mandalay, at least five people were shot dead, including a 7-year-old girl, according to Myanmar Now. Since the coup’s onset, AAPP says it has confirmed the killings of 275 people in connection with the military’s post-coup crackdown. A lawyer for ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi said her court hearing had been delayed until April 1, the second successive postponement. Suu Kyi, who was arrested as the military seized power on February 1, faces charges that include the allegedly illegal import of six handheld radios and breaching coronavirus protocols.

Eco-friendly scooter for last mile delivery and personal commute R ising pollution and increase in prices of petrol and diesel have prompted the manufacturers to develop eco-friendly and better fuel-efficient vehicles. Working in this direction, the electric scooter ‘Hope’ has been launched by Gelios Mobility, an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, incubated start-up. With a running cost of around 20 paisa per kilometre this scooter is found to be best suited for the last mile delivery and personal commute. HOPE comes with a portable charger and a portable Li-ion battery that can be charged through a normal domestic socket found in homes, eliminating the requirement of a charger in the parking place. The battery can be fully charged in four hours with a nominal current. According to their commute requirements, customers have two different

battery capacity options to choose from, with a range of 50 and 75 km in ideal conditions. The vehicle is integrated with a battery management system, data monitoring system and pedal assist unit developed in-house. It is IOT enabled for data analytics and fleet management applications. These state-ofthe-art features place HOPE in the category of smart and connected vehicles of the future. The vehicle falls under the exemption category with
a top speed of 25 kilometres per hour and does not require a driving license or registration for driving on the road. Geliose Mobility is one of the first companies to introduce a pedal assisted scooter to the market. According to their comfort, riders can easily switch between pedalling and throttle mode while driving. For parking assistance, there is a special reverse mode in the vehicle. HOPE has a strong and lightweight frame built
for rugged usage. Overall vehicle dynamics and lean design provides agility to manoeuvre through dense traffic. The vehicle has a revolutionary slide and ride feature that allows riders to attach different load carrying accessories or rear seats depending upon the requirement. Geliose Mobility is collaborating with logistics and delivery companies to cater to hyperlocal delivery requirements in food, e-commerce, grocery, essentials, and other delivery applications. Hubs for charging and maintenance will be set-up by the company on frequent routes of the delivery partners. In case of emergencies, services like roadside assistance and roadside battery swapping will be provided by the company. Mnp hockey player suspended for alleged age fraud Yuki Bhambri to lead Delhi New Delhi, Mar 24 (Agencies): In 2019, a 17-year-old hockey player represented Manipur in the Junior National Championship, meant for under-21 players. Last week the same player represented the state in the Under-17 category at the sub-junior nationals in Jind, Haryana, The Indian Express reported. As per his Aadhar card records submitted as part of a complaint to Hockey India by Maharashtra, which lost 2-4 to Manipur in the group stage on March 18, the player was 20 (date of birth: February 2, 2001) when he played the Under-17 tournament. On March 19, Hockey India suspended the player, for violating their Code of Conduct related to age fraud, from the sub-junior nationals. The player, who was allegedly overaged, scored all four goals for Manipur in the game against Maharashtra. That win helped Manipur enter the semifinals, where they will play Haryana on Wednesday. Maharashtra got eliminated. Maharashtra also demanded that all goals scored by the player be nullified. “The boy has scored all 4 goals against my team which we lost 4-2. His not being on the field would have given us the momentum to win,” the team wrote in its protest letter. However, even though the player was suspended, Hockey India did not cancel the goals he scored so Manipur’s wins were upheld. In a letter, Hockey India’s technical delegate Sonia Bhatla said they suspended the player after scrutinising his past record. “(sic) As per the com-
munication received from Hockey India, after scrutinising the records on the Hockey India member unit portal and with that of the earlier records it has been stated that the player has breached Hocke y India Code of Conduct,” Bhatla wrote. “Hence the team player of Manipur Hockey… stands permanently suspended from further participation in the Hockey India Sub Junior Men’s National Championship 2021.” With an intention to curb rampant age fraud, Hockey India launched the member unit portal in 2019, where data of all players along with their age proofs – especially in the junior and sub-junior categories – has to be uploaded. “In compliance with the National Sports Development Code 2011 on Prevention of Age Fraud, Hockey India has a policy on Age Fraud and provision of issuance of Identity Cards to all the registered players of the Hockey India Member Units,” the federation states on its website. However, a coach whose team was a part of the sub-junior nationals said the Manipur play-

New Delhi, Mar 24 (IANS): Yuki Bhambri will lead Delhi Binny’s Brigade in the third edition of the Tennis Premier League (TPL) to be played in Mumbai this year. At the player auction on Wednesday in Mumbai, Bhambri was picked for Rs 4.20 lakh. Manish Suresh Kumar and Thailand’s Peangtarn Plipuech, ranked 294 in the world, will also represent the Delhi team. The organisers, however, did not announce the dates of the tournament. The base prize for Grade A players was set at Rs.2.5 lakh. Each team was entitled to pick up three players in the auction, including two men and one woman. Through a local tournament in June all the eight teams can add one male and one female player to the
Yuki Bhambri team. Ramkumar Ramanathan will play for Mumbai Leon Army. He was picked up for Rs 4.5 lakh. India’s top ranked men’s player, Prajnesh Gunneswaran, went to Rajasthan Tigers for Rs 3.70 lakh while Pune Jaguars picked up Saketh Myneni for Rs 4.40 lakh. Mumbai, Mar 24 (IANS): Dream Sports, a homegrown company that owns brands such as fantasy sports platform Dream11, FanCode, and DreamX, on Wednesday announced the completion of a $400 million (approximately Rs 2,904 crore) secondary investment led by TCV, D1 Capital Partners and Falcon Edge. This is the largest investment in the Indian sports tech ecosystem to date. Founded in 2008 by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth, Dream Sports currently employs close to 600 people. The round also saw participation from existing investors like Tiger Global, ChrysCapital, TPG Growth, Steadview Capital and Footpath Ventures. “We have created the Fantasy Sports category in India to drive digital engagement to real-life sporting events and bring fans closer to the sport they love. We are proud to continually contribute to the overall expansion of the Indian sports ecosystem,” said Jain, CEO and CoFounder.
ers’ case showed the system is not foolproof. “The player’s documents were uploaded and accepted for sub-junior nations even though he has played a tournament for under-21 players in 2019. It shows a lot more needs to be done to tackle the problem of age fraud,” the coach said. According to data available on Hockey India’s website, the Manipur player who was suspended played four matches in the 2019 Junior National Championship and did not score a single goal. However, in the sub-junior nationals, he scored eight goals – four each against Maharashtra and Gujarat – before getting suspended. Hockey India president Gyanendro Ningombam, who is from Manipur, did not respond to a questionnaire sent to him. “President is busy today,” Hockey India said. Age fraud isn’t the only issue teams are complaining about during the subjunior nationals. Several teams have expressed concerns over Hockey India’s decision to conduct the tournament – its premier event for the under-17 age group – on a gravel surface. Teams complained that they were prepared for the tournament on artificial turf but upon reaching Jind, they realised that the matches would be played on a football ground. “It’s not even grass. We are playing matches on gravel surfaces, which has brought down the quality and exposed players to injuries,” a coach said. Teams have also complained about poor facilities, including a shortage of water. Ningombam did not reply to questions about matches being played on gravel as well.

Shooting WC : India sweep women’s 25m pistol medals
Indian trio of Chinki Yadav (C), Rahi Sarnobat (L) and Manu Bhaker at the podium after receiving their medals from Kiren Rijuju, in New Delhi on Wednesday. (PTI)
New Delhi, Mar 24 (IANS): Indian shooters did a clean sweep of medals in the women’s 25m pistol event at the shooting World Cup on Wednesday with Chinki Yadav winning gold, Rahi Sarnobat winning silver and Manu Bhaker taking bronze. Meanwhile, Aishwary Pratap Tomar won gold in the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions event. Rahi and Chinki both shot 32 in the final after which the latter won the shoot-off 4-3. Manu, meanwhile, shot 28 to finish third behind her compatriots. Tomar managed a score of 462.5 in 50m rifle 3 positions, thus winning the title ahead of Hungary’s Istvan Peni (461.6) and Denmark’s Steffel Olsen (450.9). Veterans Sanjeev Rajput (413.3) and Niraj Kumar (400.3) finished
sixth and eighth respectively. This takes India’s medal tally in the World Cup to 19 including nine gold, five silver and as many bronze medals. USA remain second in the standings with a total of six medals -- three gold, two silver and one bronze.
Surprise win over Rahi, Manu will benefit me: Chinki
Despite winning an Olympic quota place for India, Chinki Yadav wasn’t sure she would make it to the Olympic Games this year in the women’s 25m sports pistol event. There was speculation that Asian Games champion Rahi Sarnobat and Manu Bhaker would travel to Tokyo as only two shooters from a country are allowed in one category. But Chinki pro-
duced a stellar performance at the ongoing ISSF World Cup on Wednesday, pipping both Rahi and Manu, to win gold and stake serious claim for a place in the Olympic squad. In a battle of wits during the eight-shooter final at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, the 23-year-old shooter from Bhopal held her nerve to prevail over Rahi and score a 4-3 win in the shoot-off. Both Chinki and Rahi -- who is from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, were tied on scores of 32. Har yana’s teenage shooter Manu shot 28 to win bronze. Both Chinki and Rahi were neck-andneck in the preliminary round. Rahi topped the table with 581 out of 600 while Chinki shot 580. All the eight shooters progressing from the preliminary round are supposed to start afresh in the final. In the post-match interaction, Chinki said there was some pressure but she was prepared for the challenge. “I wasn’t concerned about my rivals but more focussed on my own capabilities that eventually got me gold medal in the shoot-off,” she said. Both Chinki and Rahi had won the Tokyo Olympic quota in the 2019 qualification period. But there was speculation that Rahi and Manu will compete in the event at the Olympics while Chinki would be left out of the team if she doesn’t perform.
London, M ar 2 4 (Agencies): Fifa has banned ex-president Sepp Blatter from football until 2028 after giving him a new suspension of six years and eight months. Former Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke has received a similar ban, with both also being fined £780,000, BBC reported. The punishments were for “various violations” of Fifa’s code of ethics. The new bans start when the current suspensions of 85-year-old Blatter and Valcke, 60, end in October 2021 and October 2025 respectively. A Fifa statement said: “The investigations into Messrs Blatter and Valcke covered various charges,

Orleans (France), Mar 24 (PTI): London Olympics bronze medallist Saina Nehwal crushed Ireland’s Rachael Darragh in straight games in the women’s singles opening round to make a winning start to her campaign at the Orleans Masters in Paris on Wednesday. The fourth seeded Indian, who is desperately seeking ranking points to make it to her fourth Olympics, took just 21 minutes to beat Rachael 21-9 21-5 and set up a clash with France’s Marie Batomene here. Saina had pulled out of the opening round of All England Open Championships last week after suffering a thigh injury. Top Indian male shuttler Kidambi Srikanth, seeded
number one, entered the third round with a 21-15 21-10 win over compatriot Ajay Jayaram 21-15 21-10 in 25 minutes. In the first round, Srikanth had received a bye, while Ajay had prevailed 19-21 23-21 2116 over fellow Indian Alap Mishra. Mixed doubles pair of Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N Sikki Reddy beat Austria’s Dominik Stipsits and Serena Au Yeong 21-7 21-18. The Indian duo will meet Denmark’s Niclas Nohr and Amalie Magelund next. Ira Sharma, who was promoted to the main draw from the women’s singles qualification, saw off France’s Leonice Huet 12-21 21-14 21-17 and will square off against Bulgaria’s Mariya Mitsova. in particular concerning bonus payments in relation to Fifa competitions that were paid to top Fifa management officials, various amendments and extensions of employment contracts, as well as reimbursement by Fifa of private legal costs in the case of Mr Valcke.”
In its findings, world football’s investigatory chamber found Blatter accepted “an undue economic benefit” of 23m Swiss Francs (£18m) “split over the years 2010 to 2014, as a result of the conflict of interest created by the allocation and execution of extraordinary bonus pay-
ments between limited topranking Fifa officials”. It also found that Blatter, Valcke, along with former Argentina football federation president Julio Grondona and ex-Fifa finance director Markus Kattner, had “set up a scheme through which they were allowing themselves to obtain extraordinary benefits with a minimum of effort”. It added: “This vicious circle saw three of them (Blatter, Grondona and Valcke) signing the amendment contracts of the others and approving the respective extraordinary bonuses, while the fourth (Kattner) was in charge of implementing the payment of such bo-
nuses (as well as of keeping the matter “off the books”, by not reflecting the bonuses in the Fifa financial statements and not reporting them to the Fifa auditors).” Blatter was originally banned by Fifa for eight years, later reduced to six, over ethics breaches when he was found to have made a £1.3m “disloyal payment” to ex-Uefa boss Michel Platini. His appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) was rejected in December 2016. Valcke, whose initial ban was reduced from 12 to 10 years, lost an appeal to CAS in July 2018 over his decade-long ban from football.
Door open in Team India for ‘quality’ Kohli rises to fourth spot in ICC T20I rankings players from I-League, says Stimac New Delhi, Mar For England, Dawid Malan
New Delhi, Mar 24 (IANS): The door is not closed for players in the I-League to find a place in the Indian national team but there is not enough quality at present, said India head coach Igor Stimac. No I-League players were selected in the 27-man squad that Stimac selected for the upcoming friendly matches against Oman and the United Arab Emirates in Dubai, the first time India are playing in over a year. “I think we did justice with the selection of players,” Stimac said in a virtual press conference on the eve of the match against Oman. “Others performed well in Indian Super League (ISL) as well but we need to think about the opponent as well. Of course there will be people who will always say some players deserve to be here but as the coach, I have to decide the team,” he further said. Among those playing in the I-League who were not selected is Tiddim Road Athletic Union’s (TRAU) Bidyashagar Singh, who has been integral to his team’s surprise title challenge this season with 11 goals in 14 appearances. However, Stimac said that he is not satisfied with the quality in the league and the best players in the I-League end up playing in the ISL.

Spotlight on youngsters as India face Oman New Delhi, Mar 24 (IANS): India’s 15-month break from international football came after their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Oman and they will face the same team to mark their return to action on Thursday. The match will be played at Dubai’s Maktoom Bin Rashid Stadium and will be the first of two international friendlies that India will play within a week, the second being against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the same venue. Unlike the previous fixture, however, the match on Thursday does not come with the baggage of expectation or pressure. In fact, coach Igor Stimac made it

basis of their performances in this season’s Indian Super League (ISL). India had lost both the matches they played against Oman in the qualifiers, with their first defeat being a particularly painful experience. The Blue Tigers were leading 1-0 for much of the match and even dominated the first half to a large extent. But two late goals from Oman helped them win the match 2-1. “That first match (against Oman) was crucial, that match was going to determine whether we are going to fight for first two positions in group (and qualify for next round),” Stimac said at a virtual press conference on Wednesday.
