Correspondent/Agencies NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (NPN): In a controversial decision, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala invited BJP legislature party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa to form the government in Karnataka, capping a day of intense jockeying for power and allegations by the Congress of bribery and horse-trading against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I invite you (Yeddyurappa) to form the government and be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka,” a communiqué from Raj Bhavan said. Vala also asked Yeddyurappa to seek a vote of confidence within 15 days of assuming office as the chief minister. Briefing reporters, BJP general secretary Muralidhar Rao said Yeddyurappa will take oath Thursday at 9 a.m. The BJP has 105 MLAs, including an independent, as against the combined group of JD (S)-Congress and others who have 117 MLAs.

NUNTSA red flags poor quality road D I M A P U R , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Nagaland University Non-teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA) has expressed concern at the poor quality of road construction from Sumi Settsu in Mokokchung to Nagaland University headquarters at Lumami. In a letter to national highway 61 executive engineer, NUNTSA president Temjenmenba and general secretary Toboka alleged that within a few weeks of its construction potholes had appeared due to use of inferior raw materials and poor workmanship. Calling for urgent inspection of the road, NUNTSA sought for instructions to be issued to the contractor for carrying out quality work by using good quality materials, besides ordering the contractor to repair the damaged section of the road at the earliest. Being a longstanding demand for construction of quality road between university headquarters and Mokokchung, the letter mentioned that everyone was elated when they noticed that work on the crucial road had begun. However, they were soon disheartened to find the poor construction quality of the road, the letter added.

The Congress and JD(S) slammed the Governor for disregarding the list of 117 MLAs, who have backed Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy’s claim to form the government. The Governor instead announced on Wednesday night that he would be swearing in BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa as chief minister on Thursday. The decision of Vajubhai Vala, a senior BJP leader and former Finance minister under Narendra Modi in Gujarat was not entirely unexpected as it was always considered in the offing. Interestingly, in order to stymie any court restraint, the invite on Yeddyurappa came late in the evening after the Supreme Court office closed

for the day. The swearing-in has also been well timed at 9 a.m. ahead of the opening of the office of the Supreme Court also to prevent any restraint order from circumventing the swearing-in. Earlier, HD Kumaraswamy led a delegation of Congress-JDS MLAs to meet Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala and once again staked claim to form the next government in the state. Kumaraswamy said the post-poll alliance partners have submitted a list of 117 MLAs (the halfway mark is 111 in a house with an effective strength of 222 since elections were not held in two seats). He expressed confidence that he would be able to prove majority on the floor of

the house. Though Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar had expressed confidence that the Governor will keep his word as assured to the Congress and JD-S leaders, it turned out the opposite a few hours later. The undemocratic and unconstitutional manner in which the BJP appointed Governors have been acting in controversial manner has invited serious concern among legal fraternity. This was in the light of the controversies involving the Governors. In 2017 election Congress in Manipur won 28 and BJP 21 seats. In Meghalaya in 2018 Congress won 21 seats and BJP ally the NPP won 19 seats. In both instances the Governors of the state did not invite the Congress but instead chose to invite BJP in Manipur and its alliance partner NPP in Meghalaya to form the governments. Again, in Arunachal Pradesh in 2016 then chief minister Nabam Tuki who was reinstated by the Supreme Court, was given only 48 hours to prove his majority by the acting Governor Tatagatha Roy who is Tripura Governor. In Karnataka the Governor Vajubhai Vala has given Yeddyurappa 15 days time.

DIMAPUR, MAY 16 (NPN): Nagaland Governor, P.B Acharya has appealed to all educated housewives to come forward and share their empowerment in government schools to add value and strengthen to the academic system by taking up one subject like Maths, Science, English, etc as honorary guest teachers, with the permission of the department. “This is the need of the hour”, the Governor said. A press release from PRO to Governor stated that the Governor’s wife, Kavita Acharya had also adopted Officer’s Hill Government Middle School in Kohima where she attends classes as an honorary guest teacher. The Governor also called on the youth to give back to their society. “It should be your social responsibility to make sure that your society improves in all fields and you should play a role in strengthening it”, the Governor stated. Our empowered youth should have the drive for development of the society through new and innovative projects. Young people should be game changers, he stated. He expressed appreciation for Faith Harvest Church, Kohima on them adopting Government High School, PWD colony as part of their community social service programme. The Governor also congratulated youth of the Church for organising a social work event in the school premises. Acharya stated that such service for the welfare of the society must be appreciated by all and the example should be emulated by other organisations as well. The Governor hoped that Faith Harvest Church would continue the good work for the community. He also appealed to empowered organisations and persons to come forward to strengthen the community.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Aam Admi Party (AAP) on Wednesday denied any of its members meeting NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu. The clarification followed a claim made by Liezietsu on May 14 that two senior members of AAP unit had met him on May 10 to discuss the ensuing Lok Sabha by-poll. In a statement, Nagaland AAP spokesperson Dr Lemwang Chuhwanglim clarified that his party has no intention or interest of supporting either NPF or NDPP in the by-election. Alleging that NPF had indulged in corruption for the past 15 years, while NDPP and BJP have formed an alliance, which is against the party’s manifesto, Chuhwanglim asserted that AAP Nagaland will never support or ally with any political party that indulges in corruption. The statement said AAP had come to know that Sushil Kumar, who left the party after the recently-held Assembly polls, had met Dr. Liezietsu along with AAP’s former candidate Akavi N Zhimomi without the consent of party. Yepthomi is contesting from NDPP, he cannot be called a regional politician as NDPP is still not a regional party. Liezietsü alleged that minorities across the country are being persecuted by RSS, of which BJP is a political wing, and insisted that Nagas should know this. He said if the Nagas want to vote for Hindus, then they can vote for Tokheho. However, if they want to vote for secularism and for the sake of Christianity, they should then vote for Jamir, he added.

The NPF president remarked that parliamentary election was as important as Assembly election and appealed to party workers and voters to participate in the by-poll. He said, if 26 NPF MLAs stand firm and perform their duties, the ruling PDA government will bring its own downfall. Addressing the campaign, NPF legislative party leader TR Zeliang claimed that his party was in an advantageous position for having base at village level, whereas other parties like

NDPP, BJP, NPP or JD (U) were yet to reach the grassroots level. Asserting that NPF was the only real regional party, he said though NDPP claims to a regional party, it has no head or tail. He alluded to the suspension of State BJP leaders for signing the statement calling for solution before election in January and said, had NDPP really cared for Nagas, they would have at least convinced BJP leaders to revoke the suspension order. DIMAPUR, MAY 16 (NPN): Sümi Literature Board (SLB) has announced banning of two textbooks for school students published by one Khetoshe Sumih. In a press release, SLB chairman Dr. Hokishe Yeptho, and secretary, Dr. HS Rotokha, stated that for publication of two textbooks – Apuh-Assü Leshe and Kichitssthoh for class 9-10 and Sümih Tsayeh (Grammar) for class 1-10, Khetoshe neither obtained formal permission from SLB nor Nagaland Board of School Education (NBSE), adding that the books were being made available in the market. “This is a naked violation of the norms and thus the said books are treated unauthorised,” SLB said and further declared those two books “banned and nullified forthwith.” The SLB also informed Sümi students to discard the books in order to avoid unnecessary confusion in their pursuits for leading Sütsah.

Four arrested for illegal collection DIMAPUR: On May 16, at around 12 p.m, Dimapur police arrested two persons -- dy. kilonser, Khevito Kini (78 years), S/o. NNC observes 67th Naga plebiscite anniv

K O H I M A , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Naga National Council (NNC) observed the Naga plebiscite’s 67th anniversary with NNC president, Adinno Phizo addressing the gathering in a programme held at peace camp Chedema under Kohima district on Wednesday. Adinno, in her address said that it was the 67th anniversary of the Naga voluntary plebiscite in which Nagas participated with great enthusiasm in Kohima on May 16, 1951. She said that the leadership of the NNC president A.Z. Phizo made it possible for the Nagas to uphold their rights under many circumstance. Adinno stated that when a copy of the Naga plebiscite was delivered to the first Indian Prime Minister, Nehru, he was outraged and issued a “dead or alive” order putting a price on Phizo’s head and sent his armed forces to Nagaland. According to her, it was only to show that some Nagas were with him that he immediately arranged the present “puppet” Nagaland state government with the power of money. Adinno said that Na-

gas were not demanding anything from India and Nagas were living in their own country. The Nagas, she said, had no connection with India at any time and their first contact was in May 1947 when their representatives from the constituent assembly came to Kohima and spoke to NNC inviting them join the Indian union, but NNC had categorically refused. She said that after that incident they produced the “nine point agreement” but the word “agreement” was wrong. The NNC president said it was good to see that young people were concerned about the present situation. She reminded

the people that NCC was not a political group but it was the voice of the Nagas and it keeps watch over the situation for the good of the people and the governmental executive power was vested in the federal government of Nagaland, which controls the nation. Attacking the NSCN (I-M), Adinno said that at present the Indian government was using the I-M to divide the country. Some of them had very little knowledge about Naga history but they had signed the “framework agreement” more than two years ago keeping it a secret, which, she said, was not good sign. She shared about the Naga’s history with the British

-- how Nagas refused to sign a written treaty when the British decided to make peace with the Nagas on March 27, 1880 at Mezoma village. Adinno said that there was no common history between Nagaland and India and therefore to term the Naga situation as a “political problem” was wrong. Referring to the Naga voluntary plebiscite, she pointed out that almost 100% of the people had declared that they do not want to join India; but soon after, India invaded Nagaland unexpectedly. However the challenge did not frighten the Nagas, she stated, but rose to defend their country. She reminded the people

gathered that the war went on for almost ten years from 1954-1964 till the ceasefire agreement was signed between the FGN and the GOI in May 1964. Gen. (Retd) Viyalie Metha Kedahge, FGN, in his address said that during Phizo’s time he alone walked from village to village and worked hard for the Nagas and almost every Naga agreed with his principle. Metha said Phizo made many sacrifices for the Nagas without ambition for leadership but worked for the love of the Naga nation. He also shared the details how NNC was formed and the reasons it broke away. Ninety seven year old A.Z. Puni, a co-worker of A.Z. Phizo, and F.P Solo also addressed the gathering. The programme was led by Lolezo Chase CEC NNC, Bible reading and prayer said by Rev. Savito Nagi, a special song were presented by Old Minister Hill Women Prayer Fellowship Kohima and Chedema Baptist youth while the closing prayer was said by Sano Vamuzo. The programme was attended by the rank and file of NNC and FGN, public and others.

DIMAPUR: An ex-servicemen rally was organized for veterans from Kohima, Phek, Kiphire, Wokha, Zunheboto districts and adjoining areas of Zakhama by 44 mountain brigade in coordination with Rajya Sainik Board of Nagaland on May 15 and 16 at Zakhama military station. According to PRO defence, deputy general officer commanding, red shield division assured the veterans of all possible support from the army in mitigating their grievances. Deputy Director from Rajya Sainik Board, Nagaland welcomed the veterans, Veer Naris and their dependents, and highlighted the efforts of the state government to ameliorate the conditions of ex-servicemen. Thereafter in a central interaction, the grievances of all attending veterans or Veer Naris were addressed in the presence of army, pension cell and civil government officials. Facilities like up-dation of Ex-servicemen Con-

tributory Health Scheme (ECHS), canteen smart card, medical and dental checkup, information dissemination on skill development programmes of the state government and recruitment of wards in Indian Army or Territorial Army was extended. The ‘Suvigya Cell’ of the Zakhama military station attended to several pension related anomalies of the veterans. The aim of the event was to reach out to the ex-servicemen and Veer Naris to address their grievances, update them on entitlement or benefits and redressal of pension anomalies. The rally was a step by the army to mitigate the hardship of veterans who reside in the remotest corners of Nagaland, who have served the nation with ‘Guts and Glory’ in the true tradition of this great organization. Assam CM reviews flood preparedness Guwahati, May 16 (PTI): Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal Wednesday directed Water Resources Department (WRD) and other related departments to remain fully prepared to tackle floods during the coming monsoon season, an official release said here. The chief minister reviewed the flood preparedness with Water Resources Minister Keshab Mahanta and senior officials. Floods caused by heavy rain in the state as well as in upper reaches of its neighbours are a recurring problem for Assam that affects its people and economy. During the last two years, a total of 12.02 km new embankments were created and 103 km of embankments strengthened, the release said. Moreover, during the same period 44 anti-erosion and town protection works were completed as against 28 during the last two years of the previous government, it said. Sonowal also directed the officials to coordinate between panchayat and rural development, WRD and deputy commissioners and complete plugging of breaches.

It was on this day in 1975 that Sikkim had officially become a state under the Union of India and Kazi Lhendup Dorjee became its first chief minister. A grand function was held at the Samman Bhawan auditorium in the capital town where Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling highlighted the achievements of his government. Sikkim has witnessed massive development and progress over the last two decades under his government, said Chamling, who has broken the record of former West Bengal Jyoti Basu as the longest serving chief minister by being in office for nearly 24 years. “Our GSDP has in-

creased by 5154.80 times which speaks volumes on the state’s development and progress. Similarly, our per capita income and revenue generation have increased substantially,” he said. He said the salaries of the state government employees had increased by 2,412 per cent after the last pay revision in 2008. The recent recommendations submitted by the Pay Commission and accepted by the state government will further enhance their salaries. Similarly in the case of retired government employees there has been more than 2100 per cent increase in their pensions, Chamling added. Sikkim has the highest number of employees on the government pay roll constituting about 14 per cent of its population.

India started construction of the fence and flood lights along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border around 22 years ago to curb cross-border movement of terrorists, stop infiltration and check various border crimes, smuggling and illegal trade. Govt employees join AASU against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati, May 16 (PTI): The government employees of Assam will support the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in their state-wide protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, with the call ‘Job not above Motherland’. Reminiscent of the anti-foreigners Assam Agitation (1979-1985), Sodou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), a major association of government employees, will launch a joint movement with AASU to oppose the bill and for an error-free National Register of Citizens that is being updated. AASU had spearheaded the Assam Agitation from 1979-1985. In a meeting here yesterday, SAKP president Basab Kalita said the association will join hands with AASU for a state-wide movement to oppose the bill as it “threatens the existence, language, heritage and culture of the indigenous people of Assam”. “SAKP was born out of the Assam Agitation when the employees of the state government showed great courage to voice their views defying odds against illegal

migration into Assam. We still have the same spirit,” he said. SAKP has over 3.5 lakh government employees as its members. “With the slogan ‘Job not above motherland’ which was chanted during the Assam Agitation, we have once again joined hands with AASU to fight for the cause of the state,” he said. “How can we remain silent when our state is under threat? SAKP had expressed opposition to the bill before the Joint Parliamentary Committee when its members visited Assam (May 7-9)”, Kalita said. The Bill will threaten the existence, language, heritage and culture of the indigenous people of Assam if implemented, he claimed. AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi told the meeting that the bill, if passed, will push the Assamese language, culture and indigenous tribes and communities of Assam “to the brink”. AASU and SAKP decided that May 18 would be observed as ‘Preronar Din’ (Day of Inspiration) to encourage the employees

engaged in NRC updation and making lists of genuine Indian citizens. They would organise a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan here on June 4 opposing the bill, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said. The meeting also agreed to approach the district deputy commissioners for ensuring the safety and security of government employees engaged in the NRC update process. Bhattacharyya claimed that there were reports of government employees in certain places being pressured to include the names of suspected illegal immigrants and some residents based on verbal information without official legacy data about them being citizens of India. “This is a clear violation of norm. The employees are feeling the pressure at various levels. We appeal to district administrations to ensure the security of the government employees to help them work without fear”, he said. The NRC legacy document verification has to be completed by May 31 as per the directive of the Supreme Court, he added.

Probe ordered into deaths of prisoners Guwahati, May 16 (PTI): The Kamrup Metropolitan district administration has ordered separate inquiries into the deaths of two septuagenarian prisoners of the Central Jail, Guwahati, an official release said here. The two convicts had died last month in two hospitals in Guwahati and separate probe orders were given for the two deaths. Abdul Sabhan, aged 76, expired at the B Barooah Cancer Institute here on April 24 during treatment, while Raj Karan Singh, 70, died at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital the previous day, the release said. Sabhan, who hailed from Morigaon district, had been transferred to Guwahati from Morigaon District Jail on August 9 last year for better medical treatment. Singh was from Kamrup Metropolitan district and he was admitted to hospital on April 23 because of his illness and he died on the same day, it said. The probe reports are to be submitted to the National Human Rights Commission and the Assam Human Rights Commission, the release said. Submitting reports on death of prisoners while serving term to the NHRC or the AHRC is part of a routine official procedure, official sources said.

Around 2352 solar modules have been installed at the roof-top solar power plant. Carbon dioxide benefit from the solar power plant is 6.3 lakh kg, from April 12, last year to May 10, this year. Guwahati, May 16 (PTI): A senior ONGC official was arrested Wednesday by the CBI for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs two lakh in Assam’s Sivasagar district. The CBI had received a complaint wherein the complainant alleged that ONGC Assam Asset’s Deputy General Manager A K Singh was demanding a bribe of Rs 12 lakh for passing his pending bills, a CBI press release said here. An FIR was registered yesterday 2018 under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 on the basis of the written complaint received. The accused was caught red handed while he was demanding and accepting illegal gratification of Rs two lakh from the complainant today. Shillong, May 16 (Agencies): A 21 member ‘Task Force’ has been given a time frame of 45 days to finalize the draft Meghalaya State Education Policy and submit this to the state government. The Task Force, which was notified on March 21, this year and headed by the Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, has been tasked with the responsibility of studying the draft state education policy, Northeast Today reported. “Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has given us 45 days to complete fine tuning of the policy before it is being place before the state Cabinet,” Rymbui informed after the first meeting of the Task Force held on Tuesday. He also said that he is optimistic that the Task Force will be able to complete the process within the stipulated timeline. “Yes we can when there is a will,” he said. He informed that the members of the Task Force who are mostly educationists and academicians have given their valuable suggestions that can help the government in fine tuning the policy.

Militancy related incidents in North-east lowest in 2017-18 Guwahati, May 16 (Agencies): Militancy related violence in the northeastern region has touched an all-time low during last 20 years, Northeast Now reported. Insurgency related violence in the North-east has dropped by 36 per cent, according to the latest report of the Union Home Ministry. The annual Home Ministry report for 201718 stated that insurgency related incidents in the region have decreased to 308 in 2017 compared to 484 in 2016. Nagaland, which has been plagued by militancy since the 80s, witnessed a decline by 67 per cent in insurgency-related incidents – from 58 in 2016 to 19 in 2017. Four militants were killed and 171 arrested while 87 weapons were recovered in the State last year. Assam and Meghalaya

reported over 50 per cent decline in militancy related incidents. The report further stated that Assam had witnessed ‘substantial improvement’ in the security scenario as most of the militant outfits continue to be in ceasefire. Assam reported 56 per cent decline in insurgencyrelated incidents – from 75 in 2016 to 33 in 2017. Ironically, it increased by 22 per cent in Arunachal Pradesh in spite of the fact that there is no local militant organization in the hill state. According to the Union Home Ministry report, the state is affected by militant activities of NSCN factions, ULFA (I) and NDFB (S) which use the state as a transit corridor for their movements to and from their hideouts in neighbouring Myanmar. The State witnessed 61 militancy related incidents

in 2017, in which nine insurgents were killed and 44 others arrested. The State also reported 27 cases of extortion and abduction, according to the Home Ministry report. Manipur witnessed 28 per cent decline in insurgency related incidents – from 233 in 2016 to 167 in 2017. The number of civilian deaths, on the other hand, went up from 11 to 23.

Toss in Karnataka

hen Karnataka went to the polls on May 12, the pollsters and TV channels were having a field day making various speculative predictions and manipulating pre-poll surveys. The obvious and most popular choice was to predict a hung house. After results were out on May 15, the pollsters were saved a total embarrassment. The surveys weren’t exactly accurate but approximately near-accurate when no party could obtain majority. The Karnataka assembly elections were important for each of the three major parties, and each has found something to take away from the verdict. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can claim success in emerging as the single largest party. The Congress can claim to have managed anti-incumbency with a fair degree of success by retaining its vote-share although its seat-share has plunged. The Congress’s voter base is spread most evenly across the state, which also explains why the party has had a lower success rate in converting votes to seats compared to the BJP and the JD(S).The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) has managed to nearly retain its seat-share in the assembly although its vote-share has declined compared to the previous assembly election in 2013. The BJP became the single largest party winning 104 seats while the Congress managed to scrape through with 78 seats. The JD(S) which expected to form the government on its own, even if nobody believed that, ended up with 37 seats and remains destined as the ‘kingmaker’ partner in any formation. The result was declared on May 15 but till May 16, there has been no word from the Governor of Karnataka Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala about what he would do. This is in the light of the JD(S) with 37 seats receiving total support from the Congress having 78 seats to form the next government. The combined tally of both JD (S) and Congress is 115 which is way past the halfway mark of 111( as per the current strength of 222). The BJP won 104 this time, indicating it gained 67 seats over the 40 it had in the previous house. The Congress which won 78 seats this time, had 122 MLAs in the previous house indicating it lost 44 seats. The JD(S) won 37 and lost three from the 40 it held in the previous house. The role of the governor in such a scenario is crucial but one should not raise expectations especially since there are very rare instances where the incumbents have taken an impartial decision. The biggest threat to democracy is when constitutional heads act like puppets of their political masters for which enough has been commented, debated and even decided by courts. There have been nearly ten governors, appointed by the Narendra Modi government who have created or courted controversies. These were either unrelated to the official duties or related with circumventing the constitution in order to facilitate BJP from coming to power. The conduct of governors has always come under legal scrutiny but despite court strictures, there has been little change. With regard to inviting a party of combination of parties to form the government and prove majority, it is certain that the Karnataka governor will not be guided by the constitution which Prime Minister Narendra Modi called as the “real holy book” and that itself will speak more than anything about the state of Indian democracy today.

And He will reach to the last grain of sand and the remotest star to bless us if we will only obey Him. Does it really matter that our circumstances are difficult? Why shouldn’t they be! If we give way to self-pity and indulge in the luxury of misery, we remove God’s riches from our lives and hinder others from entering into His provision. No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it removes God from the throne of our lives, replacing Him with our own selfinterests. It causes us to open our mouths only to complain, and we simply become spiritual sponges— always absorbing, never giving, and never being satisfied. And there is nothing lovely or generous about our lives. Before God becomes satisfied with us, He will take everything of our so-called wealth, until we learn that He is our Source; as the psalmist said, “All my springs are in You” (Psalm 87:7). If the majesty, grace, and power of God are not being exhibited in us, God holds us responsible. “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you…may have an abundance…” (2 Corinthians 9:8)— then learn to lavish the grace of God on others, generously giving of yourself. Speech of NNC president, Adinno Phizo on 67th anniversary of Naga Plebiscite Ladies and Gentlemen, Today is the Naga Day of the 67th anniversary of Naga Voluntary Plebiscite which took place with great enthusiasm by the Nagas in Kohima on May 16, 1951. We are thankful to God for all the time He is guiding the Naga people. Under the leadership of the Naga National Council (NNC) president, A.Z. Phizo, made everything possible for the Nagas to uphold their right in any circumstance. When a copy of Naga Plebiscite was delivered to the first Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, he was outraged. After that, an order “Dead or Alive” and put a price on Mr. Phizo’s head and sent his Armed Forces to Nagaland. Only when Mr. Phizo appeared in London, UK in 1960, Mr. Nehru was shocked and had to show that some Nagas were with him and immediately arranged the present puppet Nagaland state government with easy money. But since the Nagas are not demanding anything from India the bargaining is not there. Nagas are living in their own country, no connection with India at any time. The first contact was in May 1947 by their representatives from Constituent Assembly came to Kohima and talked to NNC inviting to join Indian Union but NNC categorically refused. After that they produced “Nine Point Agreement” but the word “agreement” was wrong. They always wanted to show the outside world that something to compromise between India and Nagaland in all these years. The strange thing is that no honest Indian among a billion people. It is good to see that young people are concerned about the present situation and writing about their feeling and never ceasing to desperation. The right is on our side. NNC is not a political group but it is the voice of the Nagas and keep watch the situation for the good of the people and put the people in harmony. The Governmental Executive power is vested in the Federal Government of Nagaland, which controls the nation. At present, the Indian

It is not a good sign. Briefly about Naga history with the British: When the British decided to make peace with the Nagas in March 1880, the meeting took place at Mezoma on 27 March, 1880. The meeting was cordial and the British official produced a written document. Naga representative leader, Mr. Pelhu presented a live Tragopan to his British counterpart. In the course of the meeting, Mr. Pelhu replied to them for the document and said “what you have written there we do not know but if you want to stay in our country do not disturb our way of life” and he refused to sign the document. So it became an oral agreement till 1947 when Great Britain relinquished her power in our part of the world. That lasted for 68 years with the stay of the British in part of our country. And the Nagas made a “unique history” by not signing the Written Treaty. The Nagas never lose their identity as Nagas. During the British time also they wrote about their Naga interpreters “scratch a Naga Dobashi (Angami) you will find a Naga”. The Nagas always maintain that they are a people in this world. Calling the Nagas as “savages” and “head hunters” were arrogant language from the Whiteman, colonial attitude to others. Because long before the Whiteman came to Naga country, Naga villages were stationary and well established. They were surprised to see the terrace fields well kept and canals were brought in from faraway places for the fields, and people were hospitable to strangers. The Nagas are defending their country all these years. English word is descriptive and to use “indigenous” instead of tradition in dress and sports is misleading others. If you call ‘indigenous’ means you are not a nation, but under

foreign rule. We all know that there is no common history between Nagaland and India and therefore to term our situation as “political problem” is wrong. In Naga Voluntary Plebiscite, almost one hundred percent declared not to join India. Soon after India invaded Nagaland, unexpected, but the challenge did not frighten the Nagas but rose to defend their country. The war went on almost ten years from 1954–1964 till the Ceasefire Agreement was signed between the Federal Government of Nagaland and the Government of India in May 1964. Nagas are living in their own country but Indian Government still did not withdraw her army from Nagaland. Instead, repeatedly imposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA), 1958 under article 355 of Indian constitution and surrounded Nagaland till today. We know we are a small nation but a big nation bullying a small one cannot be seen worthy of its stature. About the Naga inhabited areas, it is not a question of Naga integration that some people make it politics at present where you can lose your right. As far as Nagaland is concerned, they are Nagas and will continue to be a Naga because they are not in disputed area where others can claim it. But they are Nagas all the time. No controversy. By the grace of God, Nagas are alive today if anyone could remember what our people have gone through in the hand of the Indian Armed Forces. They behaved like savages if not animals, yet our people carry on with our faith in God. Many died but their sacrifices bring back a normal life to our people today; that should be remembered always. We are a nation by our own right not given to us by others. There are many nations in this world inherited from their colonial masters, but difficult to adjust with one another. We should truly become a Christian nation not by words but by action in faith. May God Bless Nagaland.

A sample for 2019 election

bitterly contested Karnataka election between the two mainstream national political parties of India and the cynical response from the state’s electorates in the form of delivering a hung verdict could be an electoral sample of what the country can expect in the 2019 parliamentary election. Exactly one year before the power contest for the throne of New Delhi, the people of Karnataka delivered an electoral verdict that frustrates politicians across the party lines. Although the saffron party emerges as a single largest party, albeit some hard hitting lesson being taught by the voters, they are well behind the required numbers to form the government on its own making the game of throne for Karnataka still a wide open political game. In an era of coalition politics where a number of regional parties start emerging to counter national political narrative, Karnataka is a few remaining states in the country where the two major national parties are in direct contest. Despite the dominance of the two national parties in the state, however, the verdict had also placed another regional party (JD-S) to either become a potential dark horse in the politics of government formation or to play a role of kingmaker. This had summed up another round of an enduring and continuing election season in the country. In effect, no political parties had won this election, and the only lesson that was learnt out of this is that Indian electorates are still capable of creating a surprise under any circumstances. For the saffron party, their recent records of series of electoral success and the anti-incumbency factor against the ruling party in the state should be an enough political advantage to wrest power from the congress in Karnataka. Surprisingly, what they only achieved in this election is that the result had placed them as serious contender for forming government in the state. Getting a mandate of becoming single largest party in Karnataka, the state the party considered as their gateway for the south, but falling short of required number for forming government on its own, meant the party’s plan of grand march towards the south need taking an extra mile. Although Modi wave is still an undeniable factor in the electoral battleground, the factor that has once again take the BJP to this impressive height in this latest election, the symptom of party’s vulnerability is now taking shape that could be the beginning of their downfall. The party’s quest for returning to power at the center one year from now, despite enjoying presently being at its zenith of power, would not be an easy ride, as BJP’s at its peak of power could also be read as a saturation point for the party in a complex, unpredictable political environment in the country, which could be a big advantage for its political opponents to exploit. This BJP’s saturation point coupled with the enigma of Modi-Shah partnership which is, as much as winning many new friends, also wining many critics and losing so many old friends too (Yashwant Singha being the latest party man to join the departing bandwagon) is a major headache for the party as they prepare for another crucial round of elections later this year in the

state of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan (the states where they are in power for long meaning huge antiincumbency factor to beat) before going for the penultimate electoral battle next year. BJP’s biggest challenges are finding a way to beat anti-incumbency, keep the momentum of winning going which means 24 x 7 politics. The danger to this narrative is that governance in New Delhi could be set aside for the next one year for the sake of politics elsewhere. But this saffron’s electoral vulnerability does not give its principal political opponent any electoral advantages either. Because at its best, Congress as of now still cannot gives any viable alternative political narrative to the country. What Congress have and could offer is Rahul Gandhi, who has, time and again, proves himself as a liability to the party, and as inefficient and reluctant politician to the country. Had it not been for a state Congress strongman leader like Siddaramaiah this time around, the party was on its way of suffering another humiliating defeat. In other words, if Congress had put up a spirited fight in this election and got any motivation out of it, it was not because of Rahul Gandhi, but it was in spite of Rahul Gandhi. Another insensitive statement of Rahul Gandhi in the form of coronating himself as the prime minister of India post-2019 only added another embarrassment for the party as they received a lackluster response from the people the party governs for the last five years. Karnataka verdict had once again seriously challenges Congress’ position as a grand old party of India. The party has to initiate revolutionary steps, which should include the possibility of looking life beyond Gandhi’s family, to recover themselves from this abyss; else the current trend is fatal for the party. If Karnataka verdict has any electoral lesson for the political parties preparing for next year Lok Sabha election, then it would be the crucial role of the regional parties whose base spread across the country. The prospect of the regional parties emerging as an alternative option in 2019 loom large as both the national parties appear not in a comfortable position of wining the national election on their own so much so that this very regional effects will be occupied a crucial part of their poll strategy; either to find a way to beat them, if not to work together with them. This overall current political scenario in the country makes it extremely difficult for the political pundits to tag any political party as a clear favorite to win next year parliamentary election. If one state, Karnataka for instance, could trouble the politicians and the political parties this much, then the task of managing and the challenge of wining national election is still an uphill task for all the political parties. The saffron party slowly becoming vulnerable, the Congress yet to present itself to the country as a better alternative and the regional parties still within the confines of their respective states; all these would make the 2019 India’s electoral battle as anybody’s game. Transfix at Crossroad? History beckons!

Chindiwin valley in Myanmar in the western most part of South-East Asian sub continent is for economic consideration and as a buffer-zone for its security in the geo-political equations of the present world order. From the meeting of Nehru and Premier U Nu of Burma (Myanmar) in 1953 at Kohima till today, India have utterly failed to take Naga people on board as equal in the union of the Republic of India. It has miserably failed to subdue Naga people by force and it has failed to amalgamate not only in its economic transformation of the country at par with other states in the country but in all its professed Indian federalism with the state of Nagaland. It is not surprising. India cannot do much to transform or bring about Naga people at par with other community in the country even if it goes on changing its policies in regard to Naga people unless it muster the political will and courage to face the Naga issue in its right perspective. But to do that India must finally accept the fact of history of the distinct identity of the Naga people as different nationality living in the Union of India forcefully subjugated and for unilaterally usurp-

ing all the traditional and ancestral Naga lands from its eastern border of Indian sub-continent at Brahmaputra valley onward. Today all the sensible Naga people are all engrossed in talking about the pre-eminent ‘settlement’ on the ongoing Indo-Naga political talk even though there is no unanimity in the presumptuous outcome of the settlement. Almost all the professed Naga leaders of different stratus are seriously engrossed in all their personal interactions or are discussing in all available public platforms on the most important and precarious issue of ‘Naga situation’ that is affecting every single Naga people wherever they are or whoever they may be and most notably all the political party leaders in the state are making haywire statements on the issue on daily basis without any substance. Along with other prominent Naga Civil organizations, the FNR (Forum for Naga Reconciliation), from its inception in 2008 till date had been painstakingly exploring every possible initiatives to bring together all the Naga National political groups through reconciliation. However, it’s professed initiative ‘peace, post settlement’ based on ‘Frame Work

Agreement of August 3, 2015’ and ‘November 17, 2017 Agreement’ is far from reality. Such initiative may boomerang. The true and real reconciliation amongst the Naga people should be based only on universal principle of Nationhood of the Naga people and its history if at all there is a nation for Naga people. It is therefore paramount importance for all the Naga National political groups and especially the negotiating political entities today to reconcile on this single principle of Naga nationhood well before the arrival of ‘settlement’ so that the Naga people can live peacefully after the political settlement if it really comes about. Every issue has its origin and its solution. Naga issue is being shrouded under the veil of history deliberately by our own people, deliberately because our leaders of past and present of different hues have consistently failed to pursue the factual history of our people for their selfish interests. It is therefore necessary to unveil this truth by going back to the past and understand the foundation of our present day predicaments. A thinker and a great historian Theodore Zeldin has said, “if any person wants to plan for the

future - one first must go back to the past and understand the present, so as to plan for the future’. Another British Philosopher had said, ‘if we don’t visit history now, history will surely visit us later’ which means history will go on repeating itself. In the entire history of the Naga people, no power on earth had conquered or subjugated neither the Naga people nor its lands until the advent of British East India Company in early 19th century. In its pursuit for lucrative businesses, the British Imperial Govern-

ment systematically declared the vast fertile Naga lands as Reserve Forests areas in the entire Naga areas with the sole purpose to exploit for their economic benefit from Barak river in southern Assam stretching to present Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam and Nagaland in Mon district so as to restrict Naga people from free access in their own lands. Centre announces ceasefire in J&K; Mufti, Omar welcomes move

New Delhi/Srinagar, May 16 (AGENCIES): In a major decision, the Centre today asked security forces not to launch operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan. The decision has been taken to help the peace loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment, a Home Ministry spokesperson said. The security forces, however, reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the

lives of innocent people, the Ministry said. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has informed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of the central government’s decision. “It is important to isolate the forces that bring a bad name to Islam by resorting to mindless violence and terror,” the spokesperson said. The government expects everyone to cooperate in this initiative and help the Muslim brothers and sisters to observe Ramzan

peacefully and without any difficulties, the spokesperson said. The holy moth of Ramzan is likely to start on Thursday or Friday, May 18, 2018 depending on the sighting of moon. Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Wednesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to not launch any security operations in the state during the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan. “The decision would go a long way in healing the wounds of people of the state who have been suffering the pain of violence and uncertainty for the past three decades or so. What best a time to go for this decision than the onset of holy month of Ramadhan which promotes values of patience, self-restraint and tolerance,” Mehbooba said in a statement. She said the ceasefire would also provide the necessary breather to the people who have been craving for it so long. She

thanked the Centre particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh for the “historic decision”. “This marks the beginning of listening of the story of pain of the state’s people by the country’s leadership,” she said. The chief minister appealed to all stakeholders to reciprocate positively to the gesture aimed at giving relief to the people of the state who have seen enough “torment and tragedy”. Mehbooba also thanked political parties who backed her idea of ‘cessation of hostilities’ during a meeting convened by her recently. Earlier the chief minister thanked the Centre in a post on Twitter. “I wholehear tedly welcome the Ramadan ceasefire & would like to thank @narendramodi ji & @rajnathsingh ji for their personal intervention. Regretting that Nagas did not take Parliament election seriously, Zeliang said it is crucial to have a Naga MP now when talks on the Naga political issue is going on in full swing. He said he is in touch with leaders of Congress, NPP and other parties who will be joining hands with NPF. The order by a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice A.K. Sikri came after the official liquidator said that the Sahara Group has not deposited Rs 750 crore in the

refund account. Posting the matter for July 12, the bench said: “As far as the auction of the property is concerned, the same shall continue as the contemner has failed to deposit Rs 750 crore, as suggested by him earlier.” The bench on April 19 had said that the group had time till May 15 to sell its property and if it fails to do so, the Bombay High Court’s official liquidator will proceed with the proposed auction process to sell the same.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): In line with the government’s Digital India programme, Nokia on Wednesday launched a “Smartpur” digital village project with the aim of developing 500 digitally integrated villages across the country in five years. “India is on the brink of a phenomenal digital journey which can only be successful if it is all inclusive,” said Ambassador of Finland to India Nina Vaskunlahti after inaugurating a pilot of the project in Tain village of Nuh district in Haryana. With the Smartpur project, Nokia said it aims to create a sustainable ecosystem in villages where community members can leverage digital tools to bring efficiency in daily lives, transparency in governance, economic prosperity for households and ease of access to various government services and information. The project will work under the five key areas of development - health, education, livelihood, governance and finance - to build a holistic, digitally integrated village, the Finnish telecom gear maker said.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Wednesday said that it will move the “appropriate authority” and take “legal recourse” against the Walmart-Flipkart deal. According to CAIT, its team of lawyers is studying the deal. The confederation has described the agreement as “circumventing laws and will offend FDI policy once it is implemented and will create an uneven level playing field beside accomplishing hidden agenda of Walmart to reach out to offline trade through e-Commerce way”. “Government should closely monitor each passage of the deal since its not a merger of two companies but will have

New Delhi, May 16 (PTI): The Cabinet Wednesday approved the National Policy on Biofuels which allows doping of ethanol produced from damaged foodgrains, rotten potatoes, corn and sugar beet with petrol to cut oil imports by Rs 4,000 crore this year alone. Till now only ethanol produced from sugarcane was allowed to be mixed in petrol. A meeting of the Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the new policy which categorises biofuels as First Generation (1G), which produce bioethanol from molasses and bio-diesel from non-edible oilseeds. Second Generation (2G) ethanol can be produced from municipal solid waste and Third Generation (3G) fuels like bio-CNG. “The Policy expands the scope of raw material for ethanol production by allowing use of sugarcane juice, sugar containing materials like sugar beet, sweet sorghum, starch containing materials like corn, cassava, damaged food grains like wheat and broken rice, and rotten potatoes,” an official statement said.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Reliance Retail’s JioFi continued to dominate the data card segment with a market share of 73%, followed by Huawei and Alcatel, in the first quarter of 2018, a report said on Wednesday. Huawei and Alcatel collectively had a 24% overall market share. According to CyberMedia Research’s (CMR) report, Reliance Retail’s shipments declined 24% when compared to the previous quarter while Huawei witnessed a nine% sequential growth in unit shipments due to the growth in shipments of its models -- “E3372H-607” and “E5573Cs-609”. Reliance Retail’s JioFi model “JMR541” captured the top spot with 49% share in the data card market. “With Q1, 2018 being the end of the financial year vendors were busy clearing the previous stock than focusing on the fresh imports. Also, Reliance Retail imported huge shipments in January which gradually decreased by the month of March for the same reason,” Shipra Sinha, Lead Analyst, CyberMedia Research, said in a statement.

MUMBAI, May 16 (PTI): Disinvestment-bound flag carrier Air India will phase out its remaining three Classic A320 planes, which are nearly three decade old, from the fleet by the end of this year. The airline had in April 2014 announced its plans to retire all 14 single-isle double-bogey wheel planes from its fleet in a phased manner after it decided to induct more fuel-efficient Airbus A320 neo planes into operations. Air India has already removed 11 classic A320 planes out of operations and the remaining three such aircrafts will be going out of the fleet by December this year, a senior company official told PTI. The official said that though these planes are still flying, but they are carrying out limited operations.

Chlorine ‘used in February attack in Syria’ L o n d o n, m ay 1 6 (Agencies): The global chemical weapons watchdog has said chlorine is likely to have been used in an attack on a rebel-held town in northern Syria in February. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) found chlorine had been “released from cylinders by mechanical impact” in Saraqeb, BBC reported. It did not assign blame for the incident, in line with its mandate. Medics and activists said at the time that chlorine-filled bombs had been dropped by a government helicopter. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied ever using chemical weapons. However, a joint UNOPCW mission that has now ended said it was confident that government forces had used the nerve agent Sarin and chlorine in four attacks. The OPCW is also currently investigating a suspected chemical attack last month in the then rebel-held town of Douma, in which medics say 40 people were killed. The US, UK and France said they were confident that chemical weapons had been used in Douma by government forces and in response carried out missile strikes on Syria’s “chemical weapons infrastructure”.

Islamabad, May 16 (IANS): An Anti-Terrorism Court here resumed hearing of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case on Wednesday, summoning the last two Pakistani prosecution witnesses and asking the government about the availability of 27 Indian witnesses in the next hearing “so as to conclude the trial expeditiously”. District Police Officer Dera Ghazi Khan Sohail Habib Tajik recorded his statement before Judge Shahrukh Arjumand, the Dawn reported. The statements of two more Pakistani witnesses, Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Additional Director General Wajid Zia and another official, Zahid Akhter, needed to be recorded. The prosecutors, however, sought adjournment due to engagements at the accountability courts. The court asked Zahid Akhter to appear in the next hearing while Wajid Zia will be summoned for prosecution evidence on May 23. The prosecution completed the testimonies of 68 Pakistani witnesses last year.

DIMAPUR: State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) and Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) conducted an orientation training for personnel of Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK) scheme, Longleng district on May 15. SC justifies its verdict on SC/ST Act

NEW DELHI, May 16 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Wednesday justified its March 20 verdict on the SC/ST Act, saying even Parliament cannot allow the arrest of a person without a fair procedure and asserted that it has protected the fundamental rights to life and liberty of innocents by ordering prior scrutiny of complaints. The Centre opposed the verdict saying that courts cannot order to supplant or substitute a provision in the law enacted by the Parliament. A bench of Justices Adarsh Goel and U U Lalit said, “we are not living in

a civilised society, if we allow an innocent to go behind bar on a one-sided version”. The bench deferred the hearing of the matter after the summer vacation and said it would hear all the parties concerned in detail. Justice Goel, who is heading the bench will retire on July 6, 2018, soon after the court reopens after summer vacation on July 2. During the hearing, the bench said, “There are series of judgements which say that Article 21 (Right to life and liberty) of the Constitution has to be dealt in every provi-

sion. Article 21, cannot be denied even by Parliament. Even our Constitution does not allow the arrest of an individual without a provision”. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for Centre, cited various apex court verdicts and said that courts cannot supplant or substitute or fill in the gap of the provisions in a law enacted by the Parliament. The top court said that fundamental rights of an individual cannot be protected if an innocent is jailed on a complaint without its prior scrutiny. Venugopal said that the Constitution and various apex court verdicts dealt with fundamental right to life and right to dignity. “Right to dignity is also associated with Right to Job but from where in a developing economy can we provide jobs to everyone. In the welfare state concept, it is very difficult and courts have to look into every aspect,” the Attorney General said and added that there were various verdicts of courts which were inconsistent to each other.

The bench, while referring to Kumari Madhuri Patil case of 1995 that had dealt with a process of verification of caste certificate, said the court had carved out a complete machinery as there was no existing procedure in place. “Constitutional courts have to ensure life, liberty and fair procedure to everyone in the society. Courts have power to ensure that fundamental right of an individual are not trampled upon,” it said. The bench said that due to paucity of time, the arguments cannot be completed and deferred the matter for further hearing after summer vacation saying the apex court registry will give the next date of hearing. On May 3, the apex court had rejected the Centre’s demand for a stay on its verdict on the SC/ST Act and said it favoured “100 per cent” the protection of the rights of these communities and punishing those guilty of atrocities against them. It had also strongly disagreed with the Centre’s contention that its March 20 verdict had led

to the loss of lives in the violence that had broken out later in several states. The top court had said under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, theoretically a person cannot get anticipatory bail, but soon after his arrest, he can get regular bail even in offences where the punishment is just six months. It had clarified that the court has not asked for non-registration of an FIR for the offences under the SC/ST Act, but sought verification before registration of FIR, so that innocents do not get penalised. The apex court had on March 20 said that on “several occasions”, innocent citizens were being termed as accused and public servants deterred from performing their duties, which was never the intention of the legislature while enacting the SC/ ST Act. Several states were rocked by wide spread violence and clashes following a ‘Bharat Bandh’ call given by several SC/ST organisations protesting the top court’s March 20 order, that claimed eight lives.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and the Indian Air Force (IAF) on a plea alleging illegal mining on defence land on the banks of the Yamuna river in Faridabad and Noida. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar asked the respondents to file a response on the plea and listed the matter for

September 19 for further hearing. The court was hearing a petition filed by a man, who claimed to be a whistleblower, seeking direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to inquire into the matter. The petitioner has alleged that illegal sand mining was continuing on defence land at the Tilpat Ranges 1 and 2 on the banks of the Yamuna in Faridabad (Haryana) and Noida (Uttar Pradesh).

The State government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the victims of the mishap that occurred on May 15 near Manturu village in

East Godavari district with bad weather considered a probable cause. Rescue teams that toiled for hours, to first trace the sunken boat and later to pull it ashore, have so far recovered 12 bodies, including that of two children, officials said. Efforts were still on to trace the other 10, they said. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who visited the accident spot, said human

error was the main reason for the mishap and assured that those guilty would be brought to book. “There was gale yesterday and the boat was also laden with cement bags and twowheelers. That caused the mishap. We will not spare anyone responsible for the incident,” he said. Though a warning about the inclement weather was issued at least half an hour in advance, there was no communication system in the boat to receive it, Naidu said. He also announced government job would be provided to an eligible person each from the families of the victims and a house would also be built for them. M u m b a i , M ay 1 6 (AGENCIES): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday filed the second chargesheet in the Punjab National BankNirav Modi fraud case. The agency mentions that Rs 7000 crore is the amount of the scam committed by Mehul Choksi of which CBI has found evidence of six letters of understanding amounting to Rs 512 crores. The charge sheet has been filed under Sections 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent) and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The CBI has again chargesheeted former CEO and MD of PNB Usha Ananthasubramanian currently holding the same post at Allahabad Bank along with executive directors K.V. Brahmaji Rao and Sanjeev Sharanand and Nehal Ahad.

Won’t allow anything threatening India’s security, says North Korea New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Even as North Korea keeps the world in suspense over its proposed talks with the US and South Korea, the East Asian nation has given its assurance that it will not allow any action that will create concerns for India’s security. The assurance came during Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh’s two-day visit to North Korea that concluded on Wednesday. This was the first ministeriallevel visit from India to North Korea in 20 years. According to a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry, Singh held discussions with Vice President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly Kim Yong Dae, Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Minister of Culture Pak Chun Nam and Vice Foreign Minister Choe Hui Chol “on a range of issues covering political, regional, economic, educational and cultural cooperation between the two countries”. The statement said the North Korean side “provided an overview of some of the recent developments in the Korean Peninsula”. Singh reiterated India’s support to the joint peace initiative of North and South Korean leadership, encouraging both sides for their efforts towards establishment of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula. Singh also highlighted the threat from nuclear proliferation, in particular India’s concerns in the context of the proliferation linkages with India’s neighbourhood.

1.46 lakh CCTVs in Delhi schools in six months: Minister New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): As many as 1.46 lakh CCTVs will be installed in over 1,000 Delhi government schools in six months at an estimated cost of Rs 597 crore, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Satyendar Jain said here on Wednesday. The CCTVs will be installed in classrooms and open areas, except bathrooms. Jain said that a tender has been floated and seven companies have participated in the bidding process. The Minister said that 1,46,800 closed-circuit televisions will be installed in 1,028 city schools. The CCTV footage will be stored in each school and automatically erased after 30 days, adding that parents will be issued an ID and password to view footage.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Central government on Wednesday again sought a report from the West Bengal government over the violence during panchayat elections in the state earlier this week that left at least 10 dead. “The Ministr y of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government in view of the violence during panchayat elections,” a senior Home Ministry official said. More than 50 people were also injured on Monday in the violence during the three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions’ elections in West Bengal. The Ministry sought the report again after the West Bengal government submitted a “sketchy” report on Tuesday in response to its first query sent on Monday. A youth was beaten to death as he tried to enter polling premises in Nadia district, while a Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist was shot dead in South 24 Parganas district’s Kultali in West Bengal. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) had on Monday claimed that one of their activists was killed in a bomb attack in North 24 Parganas district’s Amdanga.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been asked to join the investigation into an alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by two AAP MLAs, police said on Wednesday, sparking an angry reaction from the AAP. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harendra Singh said Kejriwal had been told to present himself at his house or office at 11 a.m. on Friday. The officer had earlier told IANS that Kejriwal had been told to present himself at the Civil Lines Police Station. Singh added that they were yet to receive a reply from the Chief Minister’s Office. On February 20, the Chief Secretary alleged that he was assaulted by two Aam Aadmi Party MLAs in the presence of Kejriwal at the Chief Minister’s residence. The two, Amanatullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal, were arrested.

The AAP alleged that the police order proved that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was misusing police to target his opponents. “Modiji is getting this done... First time in the history of India, the police are questioning the Chief Minister of a state in a fake case,” AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said. He said Modi “pressured” the Chief Secretary to file this case of assault so as to harass Kejriwal whose government, he said, was working well in the sectors of education, health, electricity and water. “Modiji is misusing the police to trouble him (Kejriwal) but the public is with Kejriwal.” Delhi Police have questioned Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s private secretary, in connection with the case. So far, the police have questioned 11 AAP MLAs who were present in the meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence on February 19.

BJP lost 4 out of 5 closest-fought seats in K’taka

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): As the BJP fell short of the half-way mark in the Karnataka polls, results show that it lost four of the five closelycontested seats where the victory margin was less than a thousand votes. In fact, the fate of all the five constituencies was decided by a margin of less than 700 votes. While the Congress won Maski, Pavagada, Hirekerur and Kundgol, where the difference between the number of votes polled by the winning candidate and the closest opponent varied from a meagre 213 to 634 votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Aland seat by just 697 votes. The BJP candidates came in second place in Maski, Hireker ur and Kundgol, whereas in Pavagada (Tumkur district), Congress candidate Venkataramanappa polled 72,974 votes to defeat Janata Dal (Secular)’s K.M. Thimmarayappa by 409 votes. In Maski constituency in Raichur district, Congress candidate Pratapgouda Patil defeated BJP’s Basanagowda Turvihal by 213 votes. Patil polled 60,387 votes against Turvihal’s 60,174.

Mittal said the corporation had constituted teams of the engineers and experts that will visit the spots to review the construction of all the bridges, flyovers and ROBs. “The teams will see if the security norms set by the state government has been implemented at the construction sites. The quality of the materials used in the construction of the bridges and flyovers will be also checked and there will be no construction till the teams complete the review works and submit reports within three days,” Mittal said.

Kabul, May 16 (IANS): At least 10 Afghan soldiers and 44 Taliban militants have been killed after clashes broke out in four districts of the country’s Ghazni province overnight, an Army official said on Wednesday. The clashes began after militants launched a massive coordinated attack against security checkpoints in Andar, Gilan, Zana Khan and Jaghato districts after midnight, the Army official was quoted as saying by Xinhua news agency. Eight militants were injured in the clashes. The clashes continued till Wednesday morning but the security situation was later brought under control, said the official. On Tuesday, at least five civilians, 25 soldiers and nearly 300 militants were killed after the Taliban launched a massive attack in Farah province.

Dubai, May 16 (PTI): A wealthy Christian businessman from India has gifted a USD 3 lakh mosque to hundreds of Muslim workers ahead of Ramzan in the UAE, a media report said today. Saji Cheriyan, 49, who hails from Kerala’s Kayamkulam, built the mosque for Muslim workers living in a worker accommodation that he rented out to 53 companies in Fujairah, Gulf News reported. He will name the mosque as Mariam, Umm Eisa. Cheriyan said he decided to build the mosque after he saw workers taking taxis to go to the nearest mosque. “They have to spend at least 20 dirhams to go to Fujairah city or another industrial area to attend the Juma prayer in a mosque. So, I thought it will make them happy if I build a mosque here next to their accommodation,” he said.

The businessman, who had landed in the UAE in 2003 with just a few hundred dirhams, is gifting the 1.3 million dirham mosque to hundreds of workers this Ramzan, the report said. The mosque in the East Ville Real Estate complex in Al Hayl Industrial Area can accommodate 250 worshippers at a time, it said. Facilities for another 700 to pray in the interlocked courtyard of the mosque, which will be shaded by the time it opens, have also been arranged, it said. The construction began over a year ago. Now the mosque is all set to open with the full support of Awqaf in Fujairah. “The Awqaf officials were surprised and happy when they got to know I am a Christian who wishes to build a mosque. They have offered me all the support and were ready to offer free

electricity and water and other facilities,” Cheriyan said. However, all that he has accepted from Awqaf are the carpet and sound system for the mosque. “When word spread about my mosque, many other people also offered cash donations, construction materials like sand and paint. But I have politely refused all those offers as I would like to pay from my pocket for this mosque,” he said. He said he has opted for the name Mariam, Umm Eisa (Mary, the Mother of Jesus) for the mosque after an Abu Dhabi mosque was renamed so in 2017. Cheriyan, an Orthodox Christian by birth, had previously built a church for his parish in Dibba and also keeps the doors of a multipurpose hall in the East Ville Complex for various other groups of Christian believers to pray.

The Apr 2 airstrike on a ceremony attended by hundreds of men and boys in Dasht-e-Archi district - a Taliban stronghold in the northern province of Kunduz - left at least 36 people dead including 30 children, a United Nations investigation has shown.

Seventy-one people were wounded, including 51 children, it said, adding that it had “credible information” the tolls could be even higher. Originally the government and military had said the Afghan Air Force targeted a Taliban base where senior members of the group were planning attacks. The defence ministry initially denied any civilians had been hurt, then claimed the Taliban had shot them. On Wednesday Ghani met families as well as local elders and apologised, a statement from the presidential palace said.

with LOR, 3’s Company, with their amazing vocals (including the two guitarists on the backing) supported by pleasant sounding acoustic guitars, the show was somewhat like teleporting from a rock concert to an unplugged live. Ever since LOR came into existence, they have been on an ascending order and their fan base is ever expanding. Recently, the band had bombarded their social media accounts with their photos at a recording studio and fingers crossed; fans can definitely expect an EP from the band anytime in the later part of this year. ICC Strategic Group report fears formation of rebel governing body NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): A breakaway rebel governing body, the proposed T10 format and lack of interest from broadcasters are among “18 threats” that international cricket faces right now, according to a report of the ICC’s Strategic Working Group (SWG) which will discuss these issues with the BCCI on Thursday. The report, which is in possession of PTI, claims to be a SWOT analysis of the issues confronting world cricket. The SWG comprises Cricket Australia’s David Peever, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, Singapore’s Imran Khwaja, Cricket South Africa’s Patricia Karambami, West Indies Cricket Board’s Dave Cameron and women’s representative Clare Connor. The Group will update BCCI office-bearers -- Acting President CK Khanna, Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary and Treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry -- on global strategy for cricket. “Yes, there has been threat to ICC. A very wellk n ow n f o r m e r c r i c k e t administrator (currently

banned) along with an Indian TV channel and an Australian lawyer had approached a lot of players and officials in order to form a parallel global body. They had named it ‘Operation Watershed’ then,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity. “They wanted to form parallel associations in each country and were offering a lot of money to the players. Save Star and Sony (networks), there aren’t many who are ready to invest huge sums in cricket. Mumbai beat Kings XI to stay alive champions Mumbai Indians from a mid-innings slump to a competitive 186 for 8 in the crucial game at the Wankhade stadium here. Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start, reaching 57-1 after five overs but they lost three wickets in quick succession, including two off successive balls, against the pace bowling of Andrew Tye (4-16) before Pollard (50 off 23 balls) and Krunal Pandya (32 off 23 balls) resurrected the stuttering innings. Before this knock, Pollard had only scored a paltry 83 runs in 8 matches and was dropped from the playing XI but his 65-run stand with Krunal in 36 balls, steered Mumbai Indians out of trouble after they had slumped to 71/4. Tye wrecked havoc on Mumbai’s top and middle order and his victims included Evin Lewis (9), Ishan Kishan (20) and Suryakumar Yadav (27). After a cautious start, Krunal stuck two consecutive sixes and a four in the 12th over off Marcus Stonis, while Pollard followed it up with two sixes and as many fours in the next two overs. However, just when

they were looking good, Krunal threw his wicket away. But that did not dither Pollard who kept hitting his shots and raced to his fifty in just 22 balls studded with five fours and three sixes. But as the West Indian all-rounder was poised for a big score, Ravichandran Ashwin (2/18) removed him in the 16th over, bringing Punjab back into the game. DUBAI, May 16 (PTI): Nepal’s teenage spinner Sandeep Lamichhane continued his rapid rise in international cricket as he was named in the ICC World XI squad to take on the West Indies in a charity T20 International on May 31. However, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has withdrawn from the game due to personal reasons, the ICC stated on Wednesday without specifying the exact cause of his pullout. The 17-year-old Lamichhane, who is mentored by former Australian captain Michael Clarke, is currently playing in the Indian Premier League for the Delhi Daredevils. The charity match will be played at the iconic Lord’s in London to raise funds for Caribbean stadia ravaged by

hurricanes last year. Lamichhane will join a star-studded line-up, which also comprises Eoin Morgan (captain), Shahid Afridi, Tamim Iqbal, Dinesh Karthik, Rashid Khan, Mitchell McClenaghan, Shoaib Malik, Hardik Pandya, Thisara Perera and Luke Ronchi against the ICC World T20 champion side. The West Indian squad includes the likes of Samuel Badree, Carlos Brathwaite, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Marlon Samuels and Andre Russell among others. Lamichhane was spotted by then Nepal coach Pubudu Dassanayake in 2014 and first represented Nepal in the 2016 U-19 World Cup in which he took 16 wickets. In the historic MCC versus Nepal match at Lord’s in July the same year, Lamichhane had figures of one for 25 as the visitors successfully defended 217 for eight, bowling out the hosts for 176 in 47.2 overs.
