Karna Gov shuts door on Cong-JDS BJP’s B.S. Yeddy to be sworn in as CM today; floor test after 15 days Spl. Correspondent/Agencies NEW DELHI, MAY 16 (NPN): In a controversial decision, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala invited BJP legislature party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa to form the government in Karnataka, capping a day of intense jockeying for power and allegations by the Congress of bribery and horse-trading against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “I invite you (Yeddyurappa) to form the government and be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka,” a communiqué from Raj Bhavan said. Vala also asked Yeddyurappa to seek a vote of confidence within 15 days of assuming office as the chief minister. Briefing reporters, BJP general secretary Muralidhar Rao said Yeddyurappa will take oath Thursday at 9 a.m. The BJP has 105 MLAs, including an independent, as against the combined group of JD (S)-Congress and others who have 117 MLAs.

NUNTSA red flags poor quality road D I M A P U R , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Nagaland University Non-teaching Staff Association (NUNTSA) has expressed concern at the poor quality of road construction from Sumi Settsu in Mokokchung to Nagaland University headquarters at Lumami. In a letter to national highway 61 executive engineer, NUNTSA president Temjenmenba and general secretary Toboka alleged that within a few weeks of its construction potholes had appeared due to use of inferior raw materials and poor workmanship. Calling for urgent inspection of the road, NUNTSA sought for instructions to be issued to the contractor for carrying out quality work by using good quality materials, besides ordering the contractor to repair the damaged section of the road at the earliest. Being a longstanding demand for construction of quality road between university headquarters and Mokokchung, the letter mentioned that everyone was elated when they noticed that work on the crucial road had begun. However, they were soon disheartened to find the poor construction quality of the road, the letter added.

The Congress and JD(S) slammed the Governor for disregarding the list of 117 MLAs, who have backed Janata Dal (Secular) leader H.D. Kumaraswamy’s claim to form the government. The Governor instead announced on Wednesday night that he would be swearing in BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa as chief minister on Thursday. The decision of Vajubhai Vala, a senior BJP leader and former Finance minister under Narendra Modi in Gujarat was not entirely unexpected as it was always considered in the offing. Interestingly, in order to stymie any court restraint, the invite on Yeddyurappa came late in the evening after the Supreme Court office closed

for the day. The swearing-in has also been well timed at 9 a.m. ahead of the opening of the office of the Supreme Court also to prevent any restraint order from circumventing the swearing-in. Earlier, HD Kumaraswamy led a delegation of Congress-JDS MLAs to meet Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala and once again staked claim to form the next government in the state. Kumaraswamy said the post-poll alliance partners have submitted a list of 117 MLAs (the halfway mark is 111 in a house with an effective strength of 222 since elections were not held in two seats). He expressed confidence that he would be able to prove majority on the floor of

the house. Though Congress leader D.K. Shivakumar had expressed confidence that the Governor will keep his word as assured to the Congress and JD-S leaders, it turned out the opposite a few hours later. The undemocratic and unconstitutional manner in which the BJP appointed Governors have been acting in controversial manner has invited serious concern among legal fraternity. This was in the light of the controversies involving the Governors. In 2017 election Congress in Manipur won 28 and BJP 21 seats. In Meghalaya in 2018 Congress won 21 seats and BJP ally the NPP won 19 seats. In both instances the Governors of the state did not invite the Congress but instead chose to invite BJP in Manipur and its alliance partner NPP in Meghalaya to form the governments. Again, in Arunachal Pradesh in 2016 then chief minister Nabam Tuki who was reinstated by the Supreme Court, was given only 48 hours to prove his majority by the acting Governor Tatagatha Roy who is Tripura Governor. In Karnataka the Governor Vajubhai Vala has given Yeddyurappa 15 days time.

D I M A P U R , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Aam Admi Party (AAP) on Wednesday denied any of its members meeting NPF president Dr Shürhozelie Liezietsu. The clarification followed a claim made by Liezietsu on May 14 that two senior members of AAP unit had met him on May 10 to discuss the ensuing Lok Sabha by-poll. In a statement, Nagaland AAP spokesperson Dr Lemwang Chuhwanglim clarified that his party has no intention or interest of supporting either NPF or NDPP in the by-election. Alleging that NPF had indulged in corruption for the past 15 years, while NDPP and BJP have formed an alliance, which is against the party’s manifesto, Chuhwanglim asserted that AAP Nagaland will never support or ally with any political party that indulges in corruption. The statement said AAP had come to know that Sushil Kumar, who left the party after the recently-held Assembly polls, had met Dr. Liezietsu along with AAP’s former candidate Akavi N Zhimomi without the consent of party. Neiphiu Rio along with PDA candidate and others during the rally on Wednesday.

WO K H A / M O KO KC HUNG, MAY 16 (NPN): Continuing with its campaign trail for the ensuing Lok Sabha by-poll, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio Wednesday called upon the Nagas to be united so that a peaceful atmosphere will usher in final and lasting solution to the vexed Naga political issue. For this, Rio also appealed to the NSCN (K) to engage in peace talks with the Government of India. Addressing separate

rallies at Mokokchung and Wokha, Rio reiterated that solution to the Naga political issue was his government’s top priority. He said solution, if at all it comes, will be possible only during the present NDA regime under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rio stated that there was a mass-based aspiration that solution should come before the next Lok Sabha elections in 2019. For this, he said there has to be landing ground wherein all

Nagas are united so that the solution is inclusive. Reaffirming PDA government’s wholehearted commitment towards peace process, Rio explained that it was for this reason that Tokheho Yepthomi, as an experienced and capable political leader, was unanimously chosen to represent the state in the Lok Sabha. He further highlighted the decisions and policies of the PDA Government for all round development. (Cont’d on p-7)

KOHIMA, MAY 16 (NPN): NPF president Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsü formally kicked off the party’s campaign for the ensuing Lok Sabha bypoll at Ura Academy hall here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, the veteran leader commented that Nagas were ignorant and blind with the love for money, little realising that an alien force was penetrating into Naga soil. He thus urged voters to exercise their vote consciously. He said the ensuing by-election will be the right time for Nagas to prove whether they want to protect their identity or sell it. Terming NPF candidate C Apok Jamir as a humble person who knows the Naga history in depth, Dr. Liezietsü asserted that Jamir is the right person to represent the Nagas in Delhi. He said though Tokheho

Yepthomi is contesting from NDPP, he cannot be called a regional politician as NDPP is still not a regional party. Liezietsü alleged that minorities across the country are being persecuted by RSS, of which BJP is a political wing, and insisted that Nagas should know this. He said if the Nagas want to vote for Hindus, then they can vote for Tokheho. However, if they want to vote for secularism and for the sake of Christianity, they should then vote for Jamir, he added.

The NPF president remarked that parliamentary election was as important as Assembly election and appealed to party workers and voters to participate in the by-poll. He said, if 26 NPF MLAs stand firm and perform their duties, the ruling PDA government will bring its own downfall. Addressing the campaign, NPF legislative party leader TR Zeliang claimed that his party was in an advantageous position for having base at village level, whereas other parties like

NDPP, BJP, NPP or JD (U) were yet to reach the grassroots level. Asserting that NPF was the only real regional party, he said though NDPP claims to a regional party, it has no head or tail. He alluded to the suspension of State BJP leaders for signing the statement calling for solution before election in January and said, had NDPP really cared for Nagas, they would have at least convinced BJP leaders to revoke the suspension order. Amid intense jockeying for power and allegations of horse-trading, Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Vala today invited the BJP’s B S Yeddyurappa to form the government in the state, prompting the Congress to move the Supreme Court accusing the governor of acting as a “stooge” of the saffron party Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said the party has sought a hearing on its petition challenging the Governor’s decision tonight itself. “We have filed a petition before the Supreme Court and have urged the registrar to allow hearing on it tonight itself,” Singhvi told PTI, adding that immediate hearing has been sought as the matter was very serious. NNC observes 67th Naga plebiscite anniv

Correspondent

K O H I M A , M AY 1 6 (NPN): Naga National Council (NNC) observed the Naga plebiscite’s 67th anniversary with NNC president, Adinno Phizo addressing the gathering in a programme held at peace camp Chedema under Kohima district on Wednesday. Adinno, in her address said that it was the 67th anniversary of the Naga voluntary plebiscite in which Nagas participated with great enthusiasm in Kohima on May 16, 1951. She said that the leadership of the NNC president A.Z. Phizo made it possible for the Nagas to uphold their rights under many circumstance. Adinno stated that when a copy of the Naga plebiscite was delivered to the first Indian Prime Minister, Nehru, he was outraged and issued a “dead or alive” order putting a price on Phizo’s head and sent his armed forces to Nagaland. According to her, it was only to show that some Nagas were with him that he immediately arranged the present “puppet” Nagaland state government with the power of money. Adinno said that Na-

gas were not demanding anything from India and Nagas were living in their own country. The Nagas, she said, had no connection with India at any time and their first contact was in May 1947 when their representatives from the constituent assembly came to Kohima and spoke to NNC inviting them join the Indian union, but NNC had categorically refused. She said that after that incident they produced the “nine point agreement” but the word “agreement” was wrong. The NNC president said it was good to see that young people were concerned about the present situation. She reminded

the people that NCC was not a political group but it was the voice of the Nagas and it keeps watch over the situation for the good of the people and the governmental executive power was vested in the federal government of Nagaland, which controls the nation. Attacking the NSCN (I-M), Adinno said that at present the Indian government was using the I-M to divide the country. Some of them had very little knowledge about Naga history but they had signed the “framework agreement” more than two years ago keeping it a secret, which, she said, was not good sign. She shared about the Naga’s history with the British

-- how Nagas refused to sign a written treaty when the British decided to make peace with the Nagas on March 27, 1880 at Mezoma village. Adinno said that there was no common history between Nagaland and India and therefore to term the Naga situation as a “political problem” was wrong. Referring to the Naga voluntary plebiscite, she pointed out that almost 100% of the people had declared that they do not want to join India; but soon after, India invaded Nagaland unexpectedly. However the challenge did not frighten the Nagas, she stated, but rose to defend their country. She reminded the people

gathered that the war went on for almost ten years from 1954-1964 till the ceasefire agreement was signed between the FGN and the GOI in May 1964. Gen. (Retd) Viyalie Metha Kedahge, FGN, in his address said that during Phizo’s time he alone walked from village to village and worked hard for the Nagas and almost every Naga agreed with his principle. Metha said Phizo made many sacrifices for the Nagas without ambition for leadership but worked for the love of the Naga nation. He also shared the details how NNC was formed and the reasons it broke away. Ninety seven year old A.Z. Puni, a co-worker of A.Z. Phizo, and F.P Solo also addressed the gathering. The programme was led by Lolezo Chase CEC NNC, Bible reading and prayer said by Rev. Savito Nagi, a special song were presented by Old Minister Hill Women Prayer Fellowship Kohima and Chedema Baptist youth while the closing prayer was said by Sano Vamuzo. The programme was attended by the rank and file of NNC and FGN, public and others.

Mnp MLA ridicules allegations of protecting alleged rapists Correspondent

IMPHAL, May 16: A ruling BJP legislator Wednesday ridiculed an allegation against him of protecting alleged rapists, saying that he will rather assist the police in investigation into the case. MLA Tongbram Robindro Singh, was in the news after civil society organizations including student bodies blamed him of protecting alleged rapists involved in the Thanga gang-rape case. Addressing media persons, the MLA said that he “either intervene in the police investigation or protect the alleged rapists”. He also dismissed the news report and termed it totally baseless and that he was ready to extend all forms of assistance to deliver justice to the victim of rape. “The truth is that the alleged rapists involved in the gang-rape is in no way related to me or my family. I am rather extending my best cooperation to the police investigation,” he said. He appealed to the civil society organizations and student

bodies to not malign his name without any evidence when demanding justice for crimes against women and children. Another BJP MLA H Dingo from Sekmai Assembly constituency has also been accused of abandoning a girl from Thangmeiband in Imphal West on several occasions with a false promise of marrying her after the general elections 2017. Meanwhile, members of the Socialist Students Union of Manipur (SSUM) and Proletarian Feminist Movement Manipur (POFM) visited the victim of Thanga gang-rape. Talking to media after visiting the victim and her family members, leaders of the SSUM alleged that there has been a constant threat to the victim and her family and the victim’s health was in bad condition. “If any unwanted thing happen to the family and the victim of the Thanga rape case, the government should be held fully responsible as it failed to arrest one of the accused,” SSUM co-convener Bushan Longjam warned. He asked the government to stop the culture of shielding people accused of rape because they have political and money power. He further warned of boycotting the two MLAs of the ruling BJP if they remained silent over the matter.

with Bangladesh in some parts are still unfenced at Sepahijala and Dhalai districts,” a home department official said. The government has completed over 90 per cent of fencing work along Tripura’s 856 km international border with Bangladesh. The Tripura home department said houses, homesteads, farm land and various others properties of a large number of families have fallen on the other side of the fence, resulting in numerous problems, including uncertainty and insecurity. The Indian side of the International Border passes through West Bengal (2,216 km), Assam (263 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Tripura (856 km) and Mizoram (318 km). India started construction of the fence and flood lights along the 4,096-km India-Bangladesh border around 22 years ago to curb cross-border movement of terrorists, stop infiltration and check various border crimes, smuggling and illegal trade. The mountainous terrain, dense forests, riverine and other hindrances make the borders porous and vulnerable, enabling militants, illegal immigrants and intruders cross over without any major hurdles.

Govt employees join AASU against Citizenship Bill

Guwahati, May 16 (PTI): The government employees of Assam will support the All Assam Students Union (AASU) in their state-wide protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, with the call ‘Job not above Motherland’. Reminiscent of the anti-foreigners Assam Agitation (1979-1985), Sodou Asom Karmachari Parishad (SAKP), a major association of government employees, will launch a joint movement with AASU to oppose the bill and for an error-free National Register of Citizens that is being updated. AASU had spearheaded the Assam Agitation from 1979-1985. In a meeting here yesterday, SAKP president Basab Kalita said the association will join hands with AASU for a state-wide movement to oppose the bill as it “threatens the existence, language, heritage and culture of the indigenous people of Assam”. “SAKP was born out of the Assam Agitation when the employees of the state government showed great courage to voice their views defying odds against illegal

migration into Assam. We still have the same spirit,” he said. SAKP has over 3.5 lakh government employees as its members. “With the slogan ‘Job not above motherland’ which was chanted during the Assam Agitation, we have once again joined hands with AASU to fight for the cause of the state,” he said. “How can we remain silent when our state is under threat? SAKP had expressed opposition to the bill before the Joint Parliamentary Committee when its members visited Assam (May 7-9)”, Kalita said. The Bill will threaten the existence, language, heritage and culture of the indigenous people of Assam if implemented, he claimed. AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi told the meeting that the bill, if passed, will push the Assamese language, culture and indigenous tribes and communities of Assam “to the brink”. AASU and SAKP decided that May 18 would be observed as ‘Preronar Din’ (Day of Inspiration) to encourage the employees

engaged in NRC updation and making lists of genuine Indian citizens. They would organise a protest in front of the Raj Bhavan here on June 4 opposing the bill, AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya said. The meeting also agreed to approach the district deputy commissioners for ensuring the safety and security of government employees engaged in the NRC update process. Bhattacharyya claimed that there were reports of government employees in certain places being pressured to include the names of suspected illegal immigrants and some residents based on verbal information without official legacy data about them being citizens of India. “This is a clear violation of norm. The employees are feeling the pressure at various levels. We appeal to district administrations to ensure the security of the government employees to help them work without fear”, he said. The NRC legacy document verification has to be completed by May 31 as per the directive of the Supreme Court, he added.

Manipur witnessed 28 per cent decline in insurgency related incidents – from 233 in 2016 to 167 in 2017. The number of civilian deaths, on the other hand, went up from 11 to 23.

Toss in Karnataka

W

hen Karnataka went to the polls on May 12, the pollsters and TV channels were having a field day making various speculative predictions and manipulating pre-poll surveys. The obvious and most popular choice was to predict a hung house. After results were out on May 15, the pollsters were saved a total embarrassment. The surveys weren’t exactly accurate but approximately near-accurate when no party could obtain majority. The Karnataka assembly elections were important for each of the three major parties, and each has found something to take away from the verdict. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) can claim success in emerging as the single largest party. The Congress can claim to have managed anti-incumbency with a fair degree of success by retaining its vote-share although its seat-share has plunged. The Congress’s voter base is spread most evenly across the state, which also explains why the party has had a lower success rate in converting votes to seats compared to the BJP and the JD(S).The Janata Dal (Secular) or JD(S) has managed to nearly retain its seat-share in the assembly although its vote-share has declined compared to the previous assembly election in 2013. The BJP became the single largest party winning 104 seats while the Congress managed to scrape through with 78 seats. The JD(S) which expected to form the government on its own, even if nobody believed that, ended up with 37 seats and remains destined as the ‘kingmaker’ partner in any formation. The result was declared on May 15 but till May 16, there has been no word from the Governor of Karnataka Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala about what he would do. This is in the light of the JD(S) with 37 seats receiving total support from the Congress having 78 seats to form the next government. The combined tally of both JD (S) and Congress is 115 which is way past the halfway mark of 111( as per the current strength of 222). The BJP won 104 this time, indicating it gained 67 seats over the 40 it had in the previous house. The Congress which won 78 seats this time, had 122 MLAs in the previous house indicating it lost 44 seats. The JD(S) won 37 and lost three from the 40 it held in the previous house. The role of the governor in such a scenario is crucial but one should not raise expectations especially since there are very rare instances where the incumbents have taken an impartial decision. The biggest threat to democracy is when constitutional heads act like puppets of their political masters for which enough has been commented, debated and even decided by courts. There have been nearly ten governors, appointed by the Narendra Modi government who have created or courted controversies. These were either unrelated to the official duties or related with circumventing the constitution in order to facilitate BJP from coming to power. The conduct of governors has always come under legal scrutiny but despite court strictures, there has been little change. With regard to inviting a party of combination of parties to form the government and prove majority, it is certain that the Karnataka governor will not be guided by the constitution which Prime Minister Narendra Modi called as the “real holy book” and that itself will speak more than anything about the state of Indian democracy today.

DailyDevotion The Habit of Recognizing God’s Provision …you may be partakers of the divine nature…

—2 Peter 1:4 We are made “partakers of the divine nature,” receiving and sharing God’s own nature through His promises. Then we have to work that divine nature into our human nature by developing godly habits. The first habit to develop is the habit of recognizing God’s provision for us. We say, however, “Oh, I can’t afford it.” One of the worst lies is wrapped up in that statement. We talk as if our heavenly Father has cut us off without a penny! We think it is a sign of true humility to say at the end of the day, “Well, I just barely got by today, but it was a severe struggle.” And yet all of Almighty God is ours in the Lord Jesus! And He will reach to the last grain of sand and the remotest star to bless us if we will only obey Him. Does it really matter that our circumstances are difficult? Why shouldn’t they be! If we give way to self-pity and indulge in the luxury of misery, we remove God’s riches from our lives and hinder others from entering into His provision. No sin is worse than the sin of self-pity, because it removes God from the throne of our lives, replacing Him with our own selfinterests. It causes us to open our mouths only to complain, and we simply become spiritual sponges— always absorbing, never giving, and never being satisfied. And there is nothing lovely or generous about our lives. Before God becomes satisfied with us, He will take everything of our so-called wealth, until we learn that He is our Source; as the psalmist said, “All my springs are in You” (Psalm 87:7). If the majesty, grace, and power of God are not being exhibited in us, God holds us responsible. “God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you…may have an abundance…” (2 Corinthians 9:8)— then learn to lavish the grace of God on others, generously giving of yourself. Be marked and identified with God’s nature, and His blessing will flow through you all the time.

Post-mortem

Speech of NNC president, Adinno Phizo on 67th anniversary of Naga Plebiscite Ladies and Gentlemen, Today is the Naga Day of the 67th anniversary of Naga Voluntary Plebiscite which took place with great enthusiasm by the Nagas in Kohima on May 16, 1951. We are thankful to God for all the time He is guiding the Naga people. Under the leadership of the Naga National Council (NNC) president, A.Z. Phizo, made everything possible for the Nagas to uphold their right in any circumstance. When a copy of Naga Plebiscite was delivered to the first Indian Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru, he was outraged. After that, an order “Dead or Alive” and put a price on Mr. Phizo’s head and sent his Armed Forces to Nagaland. Only when Mr. Phizo appeared in London, UK in 1960, Mr. Nehru was shocked and had to show that some Nagas were with him and immediately arranged the present puppet Nagaland state government with easy money. But since the Nagas are not demanding anything from India the bargaining is not there. Nagas are living in their own country, no connection with India at any time. The first contact was in May 1947 by their representatives from Constituent Assembly came to Kohima and talked to NNC inviting to join Indian Union but NNC categorically refused. After that they produced “Nine Point Agreement” but the word “agreement” was wrong. They always wanted to show the outside world that something to compromise between India and Nagaland in all these years. The strange thing is that no honest Indian among a billion people. It is good to see that young people are concerned about the present situation and writing about their feeling and never ceasing to desperation. The right is on our side. NNC is not a political group but it is the voice of the Nagas and keep watch the situation for the good of the people and put the people in harmony. The Governmental Executive power is vested in the Federal Government of Nagaland, which controls the nation. At present, the Indian

T

he recent inconclusive conclave of the Chief Ministers of the north-east states initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Delhi to discuss on the ‘Act East Policy’ reminds the Naga people in particular how peculiarly fragile the Indo-Naga situation is. ‘Look East Policy’ to ‘Act East Policy’ of the Government of India is nothing more than a mere political gimmick to not only hoodwink the powers that be at Delhi corridors but to further confuse the Naga people and the North-easterner at large of the fragile Indian federalism. Starting from the Interim Government of pre-independent India under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru as Prime Minister to Modi as Prime Minister under fundamentalist Hindu Rashtriya party, it has been consistent policy of the Government of India to toward Naga people, to maintain its continuous string of attachments dragging the perplexed Naga leaders who only think for aggrandizement in amassing their ill-gotten money on the excuses of prevailing situations. For India, the vast Naga inhabited lands stretching from Brahmaputra valley in the eastern most part of Indian sub-continent to

Government is using ‘NSCN IM’ to bring division in the country and some of them have very little knowledge about Naga histor y but make them agreed to have a ‘framework agreement’ more than two years ago and kept it a secret. It is not a good sign. Briefly about Naga history with the British: When the British decided to make peace with the Nagas in March 1880, the meeting took place at Mezoma on 27 March, 1880. The meeting was cordial and the British official produced a written document. Naga representative leader, Mr. Pelhu presented a live Tragopan to his British counterpart. In the course of the meeting, Mr. Pelhu replied to them for the document and said “what you have written there we do not know but if you want to stay in our country do not disturb our way of life” and he refused to sign the document. So it became an oral agreement till 1947 when Great Britain relinquished her power in our part of the world. That lasted for 68 years with the stay of the British in part of our country. And the Nagas made a “unique history” by not signing the Written Treaty. The Nagas never lose their identity as Nagas. During the British time also they wrote about their Naga interpreters “scratch a Naga Dobashi (Angami) you will find a Naga”. The Nagas always maintain that they are a people in this world. Calling the Nagas as “savages” and “head hunters” were arrogant language from the Whiteman, colonial attitude to others. Because long before the Whiteman came to Naga country, Naga villages were stationary and well established. They were surprised to see the terrace fields well kept and canals were brought in from faraway places for the fields, and people were hospitable to strangers. The Nagas are defending their country all these years. English word is descriptive and to use “indigenous” instead of tradition in dress and sports is misleading others. If you call ‘indigenous’ means you are not a nation, but under

foreign rule. We all know that there is no common history between Nagaland and India and therefore to term our situation as “political problem” is wrong. In Naga Voluntary Plebiscite, almost one hundred percent declared not to join India. Soon after India invaded Nagaland, unexpected, but the challenge did not frighten the Nagas but rose to defend their country. The war went on almost ten years from 1954–1964 till the Ceasefire Agreement was signed between the Federal Government of Nagaland and the Government of India in May 1964. Nagas are living in their own country but Indian Government still did not withdraw her army from Nagaland. Instead, repeatedly imposed the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, (AFSPA), 1958 under article 355 of Indian constitution and surrounded Nagaland till today. We know we are a small nation but a big nation bullying a small one cannot be seen worthy of its stature. About the Naga inhabited areas, it is not a question of Naga integration that some people make it politics at present where you can lose your right. As far as Nagaland is concerned, they are Nagas and will continue to be a Naga because they are not in disputed area where others can claim it. But they are Nagas all the time. No controversy. By the grace of God, Nagas are alive today if anyone could remember what our people have gone through in the hand of the Indian Armed Forces. They behaved like savages if not animals, yet our people carry on with our faith in God. Many died but their sacrifices bring back a normal life to our people today; that should be remembered always. We are a nation by our own right not given to us by others. There are many nations in this world inherited from their colonial masters, but difficult to adjust with one another. We should truly become a Christian nation not by words but by action in faith. May God Bless Nagaland.

A sample for 2019 election

bitterly contested Karnataka election between the two mainstream national political parties of India and the cynical response from the state’s electorates in the form of delivering a hung verdict could be an electoral sample of what the country can expect in the 2019 parliamentary election. Exactly one year before the power contest for the throne of New Delhi, the people of Karnataka delivered an electoral verdict that frustrates politicians across the party lines. Although the saffron party emerges as a single largest party, albeit some hard hitting lesson being taught by the voters, they are well behind the required numbers to form the government on its own making the game of throne for Karnataka still a wide open political game. In an era of coalition politics where a number of regional parties start emerging to counter national political narrative, Karnataka is a few remaining states in the country where the two major national parties are in direct contest. Despite the dominance of the two national parties in the state, however, the verdict had also placed another regional party (JD-S) to either become a potential dark horse in the politics of government formation or to play a role of kingmaker. This had summed up another round of an enduring and continuing election season in the country. In effect, no political parties had won this election, and the only lesson that was learnt out of this is that Indian electorates are still capable of creating a surprise under any circumstances. For the saffron party, their recent records of series of electoral success and the anti-incumbency factor against the ruling party in the state should be an enough political advantage to wrest power from the congress in Karnataka. Surprisingly, what they only achieved in this election is that the result had placed them as serious contender for forming government in the state. Getting a mandate of becoming single largest party in Karnataka, the state the party considered as their gateway for the south, but falling short of required number for forming government on its own, meant the party’s plan of grand march towards the south need taking an extra mile. Although Modi wave is still an undeniable factor in the electoral battleground, the factor that has once again take the BJP to this impressive height in this latest election, the symptom of party’s vulnerability is now taking shape that could be the beginning of their downfall. The party’s quest for returning to power at the center one year from now, despite enjoying presently being at its zenith of power, would not be an easy ride, as BJP’s at its peak of power could also be read as a saturation point for the party in a complex, unpredictable political environment in the country, which could be a big advantage for its political opponents to exploit. This BJP’s saturation point coupled with the enigma of Modi-Shah partnership which is, as much as winning many new friends, also wining many critics and losing so many old friends too (Yashwant Singha being the latest party man to join the departing bandwagon) is a major headache for the party as they prepare for another crucial round of elections later this year in the

state of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan (the states where they are in power for long meaning huge antiincumbency factor to beat) before going for the penultimate electoral battle next year. BJP’s biggest challenges are finding a way to beat anti-incumbency, keep the momentum of winning going which means 24 x 7 politics. The danger to this narrative is that governance in New Delhi could be set aside for the next one year for the sake of politics elsewhere. But this saffron’s electoral vulnerability does not give its principal political opponent any electoral advantages either. Because at its best, Congress as of now still cannot gives any viable alternative political narrative to the country. What Congress have and could offer is Rahul Gandhi, who has, time and again, proves himself as a liability to the party, and as inefficient and reluctant politician to the country. Had it not been for a state Congress strongman leader like Siddaramaiah this time around, the party was on its way of suffering another humiliating defeat. In other words, if Congress had put up a spirited fight in this election and got any motivation out of it, it was not because of Rahul Gandhi, but it was in spite of Rahul Gandhi. Another insensitive statement of Rahul Gandhi in the form of coronating himself as the prime minister of India post-2019 only added another embarrassment for the party as they received a lackluster response from the people the party governs for the last five years. Karnataka verdict had once again seriously challenges Congress’ position as a grand old party of India. The party has to initiate revolutionary steps, which should include the possibility of looking life beyond Gandhi’s family, to recover themselves from this abyss; else the current trend is fatal for the party. If Karnataka verdict has any electoral lesson for the political parties preparing for next year Lok Sabha election, then it would be the crucial role of the regional parties whose base spread across the country. The prospect of the regional parties emerging as an alternative option in 2019 loom large as both the national parties appear not in a comfortable position of wining the national election on their own so much so that this very regional effects will be occupied a crucial part of their poll strategy; either to find a way to beat them, if not to work together with them. This overall current political scenario in the country makes it extremely difficult for the political pundits to tag any political party as a clear favorite to win next year parliamentary election. If one state, Karnataka for instance, could trouble the politicians and the political parties this much, then the task of managing and the challenge of wining national election is still an uphill task for all the political parties. The saffron party slowly becoming vulnerable, the Congress yet to present itself to the country as a better alternative and the regional parties still within the confines of their respective states; all these would make the 2019 India’s electoral battle as anybody’s game. Transfix at Crossroad? History beckons!

Chindiwin valley in Myanmar in the western most part of South-East Asian sub continent is for economic consideration and as a buffer-zone for its security in the geo-political equations of the present world order. From the meeting of Nehru and Premier U Nu of Burma (Myanmar) in 1953 at Kohima till today, India have utterly failed to take Naga people on board as equal in the union of the Republic of India. It has miserably failed to subdue Naga people by force and it has failed to amalgamate not only in its economic transformation of the country at par with other states in the country but in all its professed Indian federalism with the state of Nagaland. It is not surprising. India cannot do much to transform or bring about Naga people at par with other community in the country even if it goes on changing its policies in regard to Naga people unless it muster the political will and courage to face the Naga issue in its right perspective. But to do that India must finally accept the fact of history of the distinct identity of the Naga people as different nationality living in the Union of India forcefully subjugated and for unilaterally usurp-

ing all the traditional and ancestral Naga lands from its eastern border of Indian sub-continent at Brahmaputra valley onward. Today all the sensible Naga people are all engrossed in talking about the pre-eminent ‘settlement’ on the ongoing Indo-Naga political talk even though there is no unanimity in the presumptuous outcome of the settlement. Almost all the professed Naga leaders of different stratus are seriously engrossed in all their personal interactions or are discussing in all available public platforms on the most important and precarious issue of ‘Naga situation’ that is affecting every single Naga people wherever they are or whoever they may be and most notably all the political party leaders in the state are making haywire statements on the issue on daily basis without any substance. Along with other prominent Naga Civil organizations, the FNR (Forum for Naga Reconciliation), from its inception in 2008 till date had been painstakingly exploring every possible initiatives to bring together all the Naga National political groups through reconciliation. However, it’s professed initiative ‘peace, post settlement’ based on ‘Frame Work

Agreement of August 3, 2015’ and ‘November 17, 2017 Agreement’ is far from reality. Such initiative may boomerang. The true and real reconciliation amongst the Naga people should be based only on universal principle of Nationhood of the Naga people and its history if at all there is a nation for Naga people. It is therefore paramount importance for all the Naga National political groups and especially the negotiating political entities today to reconcile on this single principle of Naga nationhood well before the arrival of ‘settlement’ so that the Naga people can live peacefully after the political settlement if it really comes about. Every issue has its origin and its solution. Naga issue is being shrouded under the veil of history deliberately by our own people, deliberately because our leaders of past and present of different hues have consistently failed to pursue the factual history of our people for their selfish interests. It is therefore necessary to unveil this truth by going back to the past and understand the foundation of our present day predicaments. A thinker and a great historian Theodore Zeldin has said, “if any person wants to plan for the

future - one first must go back to the past and understand the present, so as to plan for the future’. Another British Philosopher had said, ‘if we don’t visit history now, history will surely visit us later’ which means history will go on repeating itself. In the entire history of the Naga people, no power on earth had conquered or subjugated neither the Naga people nor its lands until the advent of British East India Company in early 19th century. In its pursuit for lucrative businesses, the British Imperial Govern-

ment systematically declared the vast fertile Naga lands as Reserve Forests areas in the entire Naga areas with the sole purpose to exploit for their economic benefit from Barak river in southern Assam stretching to present Arunachal Pradesh bordering Assam and Nagaland in Mon district so as to restrict Naga people from free access in their own lands. (To be concluded) Hukavi T Yeputhomi, Chairman, United Naga Tribes Association on Border Areas

Reader’s Post

Sir,

Give us good roads

Prior to general assembly election 2018, one of the election’s manifestos was interesting which has grabbed the attention of the public of all ages that read “Change is Coming”. In this regard, I would like to appeal the present PDA government to bring changes by giving good roads to the public of Nagaland, which is a prerequisite amenity for all regions of the state. River like Highways and paddy field Highways of Nagaland for many years is letting the Nagas to forget what actually Highways are! Construction of roads is the first step for a real change, and the likes would gradually or automatically follow. Talking of changes without taking the very first step would have no impact. Let the Nagas see good roads under your dynamic leadership. Imtirong Amri, Chumukedima

Centre announces ceasefire in J&K; Mufti, Omar welcomes move

Jammu and Kashmir CM Mehbooba Mufti (R) and opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah.

New Delhi/Srinagar, May 16 (AGENCIES): In a major decision, the Centre today asked security forces not to launch operations in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan. The decision has been taken to help the peace loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment, a Home Ministry spokesperson said. The security forces, however, reserve the right to retaliate if attacked or if essential to protect the

lives of innocent people, the Ministry said. Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh has informed Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti of the central government’s decision. “It is important to isolate the forces that bring a bad name to Islam by resorting to mindless violence and terror,” the spokesperson said. The government expects everyone to cooperate in this initiative and help the Muslim brothers and sisters to observe Ramzan

peacefully and without any difficulties, the spokesperson said. The holy moth of Ramzan is likely to start on Thursday or Friday, May 18, 2018 depending on the sighting of moon. Meanwhile Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Wednesday welcomed the Centre’s decision to not launch any security operations in the state during the Muslim fasting month of Ramzan. “The decision would go a long way in healing the wounds of people of the state who have been suffering the pain of violence and uncertainty for the past three decades or so. What best a time to go for this decision than the onset of holy month of Ramadhan which promotes values of patience, self-restraint and tolerance,” Mehbooba said in a statement. She said the ceasefire would also provide the necessary breather to the people who have been craving for it so long. She

thanked the Centre particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh for the “historic decision”. “This marks the beginning of listening of the story of pain of the state’s people by the country’s leadership,” she said. The chief minister appealed to all stakeholders to reciprocate positively to the gesture aimed at giving relief to the people of the state who have seen enough “torment and tragedy”. Mehbooba also thanked political parties who backed her idea of ‘cessation of hostilities’ during a meeting convened by her recently. Earlier the chief minister thanked the Centre in a post on Twitter. “I wholehear tedly welcome the Ramadan ceasefire & would like to thank @narendramodi ji & @rajnathsingh ji for their personal intervention. My gratitude also to the leaders & parties who participated in the All Party Meeting & helped build consensus towards this announcement (sic),” Mehbooba tweeted.

Dr. Shurhozelie appeals voters to vote consciously (From p-1) Zeliang alleged that though NDPP is showing to be working as a regional party from the outside, it is BJP who is working internally. He remarked that had the PDA alliance put up a BJP candidate, he or she was destined to lose the by-election. Alleging that the Naga peace process was heading towards an unknown destination, the leader of opposition said underground groups, tribal Hohos and Nagas should realise this. He said the PDA government comprising five political parties had announced many programmes for completion within 60/100 days. But the minister in charge of road and bridges has started to blame the weather for poor roads now, he added. Questioning whether the chief engineer or engineer was ignorant that rains in Nagaland begin in April, Zeliang said repairing of roads in April-May will be a sham as quality will be compromised. Claiming that the same project was taken up by his government, he said his government had, however, maintained transparency and accountability by declaring names of contractors, amounts sanctioned, etc, unlike keeping them hidden like the PDA government. Referring to Neiphiu Rio-led government’s announcement to remove VIP culture, Zeliang said Nagas had hoped for a change but instead a number of political party leaders have been given the status

of cabinet ministers and ministers of state and asked whether this was called “removal” of VIP culture. The leader of opposition further claimed that his government had brought Rs 283 crore for VDBs just before Christmas in 2017, but could not distribute it as Assembly election was announced. He said, even after distributing the money by the present PDA government, Rs 45 crore was still left and that all records are lying with planning and finance departments in this regard. Regretting that Nagas did not take Parliament election seriously, Zeliang said it is crucial to have a Naga MP now when talks on the Naga political issue is going on in full swing. He exuded confidence that the NPF candidate will win the by-election as, according to him, even original Congress supporters will not vote for the PDA candidate. He said he is in touch with leaders of Congress, NPP and other parties who will be joining hands with NPF. Predicting that the NDPP led government will collapse even without touching, Zeliang said if the NPF candidate wins the by-poll, it will be a precursor to the 2019 Lok Sabha polls and demoralise the ruling coalition. Speaking on the occasion, Rajya Sabha member KG Kenye said voters preferred to vote for the candidates who were aligned with the power at the Centre. However, this has not happened since the Centre has not provided the much needed assistance and for which Nagaland

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Wednesday said the process for the auction of Sahara’s Aamby Valley project in Maharashtra will continue after the group failed to deposit Rs 750 crore in the SEBI-Sahara Refund Account. The order by a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice A.K. Sikri came after the official liquidator said that the Sahara Group has not deposited Rs 750 crore in the

refund account. Posting the matter for July 12, the bench said: “As far as the auction of the property is concerned, the same shall continue as the contemner has failed to deposit Rs 750 crore, as suggested by him earlier.” The bench on April 19 had said that the group had time till May 15 to sell its property and if it fails to do so, the Bombay High Court’s official liquidator will proceed with the proposed auction process to sell the same.

to ensure his landslide victory to make the PDA strong. He also mentioned that Mokokchung will get a new football ground with state-of-the-art facilities like artificial grass turf, flood lights, etc, which will be implemented shortly. In his speech, PDA consensus candidate, Tokheho Yepthomi said he took the decision to contest the by-poll after much consideration and promised to give his best for the people and the State, if elected. He said he will act and work in accordance with the guidance of the chief minister and PDA members on all fronts.

Consequently, an executive meeting held on Tuesday to discuss the issue found that Zhimomi and Kumar were indulging in anti-AAP activities due to their personal interests without obtaining any consent from the party. While the meeting resolved to suspend Zhimomi from AAP with effect from Wednesday till further notice, it also warned Kumar of action being initiated against him without any prior notice, should he indulge in any such activities in the future in the name of AAP. Pointing out that the party believes in the right to vote for every citizen of the country, AAP also wished all political parties and citizens of the State the very best and a peaceful polling in the ensuing by-election.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Three BJP MPs on Wednesday wrote to Home Minister Rajnath Singh alleging phone tapping of party leaders by the Karnataka government and urged him to instruct the state authority to “end this pernicious practice”. The three Karnataka MPs -- Shoba Karandlaje, G.M. Siddeshwara and P.C. Mohan -- in their letter stated that the Congress government in Karnataka was taking the advantage of the political situation which was “fluid following

Short speeches were also delivered at the programme by NDPP president, Chingwang Konyak; ministers-- G Kaito Aye, Tongpang Ozukum and Temjen Imna Along; advisor Imnatiba and state BJP president Visasolie Lhoungu. Recalling how the previous Government was riddled with crises and instability, Tokheho stated that the present Government would be stable and decisive. Deputy chief minister Y. Patton slammed the previous Government for instability and assured that this time, under the leadership of chief minister Neiphiu Rio, Nagas will witness good governance under a stable government. Minister G. Kaito Aye stated that an era of stability and good governance had dawned on Nagaland

Rio further said that the NPF was engaging in double-speak by branding the BJP as anti-Christian and communal without considering the fact that the NPF party had been in alliance with the BJP for the last 15 years. He stated that the BJP which chose the NDPP as its ally spoke volumes of the lack of confidence upon the NPF leadership and therefore urged upon the people not to be misled by the propaganda of the NPF. Stating that real change will only come when people extend their full cooperation to the government, Rio solicited votes for the PDA candidate and called upon them

Taking a dig at the opposition NPF, Rio recalled that when he along with other like-minded leaders launched the NPF in 2002, late Vizol was chosen as the president. During that time, TR Zeliang was a Congress MLA. Rio said that the present NPF president not only got the erstwhile NPC derecognized during his presidentship, but further abandoned the party to contest the 1999 Lok Sabha elections as an Independent candidate with the Bus symbol. “I want to remind you that late Uncle Vizol was the first president of the NPF. But now the

NPF party president and its leader are behaving like they own the party,” said Rio and added that inspite of his many attempts to strengthen the party, he was instead suspended and expelled. Therefore, Rio said he decided to leave the NPF since there was no place for him in the party which he had built up over the last 15 years along with other leaders. He also reminded that under his leadership, the NPF sailed to power for three consecutive terms but after he decided to go to Delhi as MP (Lok Sabha), the successive leadership misused the mandate of the people.

continues to remain economically backward and always in financial deficit. He further urged the Nagas not to compromise with their rights or the special constitutional provision. In his speech, NPF candidate C. Apok Jamir admitted that election is always a challenge, but added that the commitment of party workers gave him tremendous boost. He asserted that though NPF is in the opposition, it has a good chance of winning the by-election with the concerted effort of all party workers, adding, if NPF wins the election, it will be a turning point for the party. On the PDA government’s slogan “Together with all, development for all”, Jamir said if the slogan is translated into Hindi it will read as a carbon copy of BJP’s slogan in 2014 parliamentary election “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”. Reminding the electorate that parliamentary election is equally important as an Assembly election, he urged the Nagas to lend their voice in support of their rights and ensure that no outside force dilutes the identity of Nagas. Jamir asserted that being Nagaland’s sole representative in Lok Sabha will not make him voice-less and that he will stand for truth and give his best, if elected. He commented that his victory will be a victory for the Nagas. NPF legislators also addressed the gathering. NPF workers from various divisions under Kohima district, by-poll campaign committee members and central leaders attended the campaign programme.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): In line with the government’s Digital India programme, Nokia on Wednesday launched a “Smartpur” digital village project with the aim of developing 500 digitally integrated villages across the country in five years. “India is on the brink of a phenomenal digital journey which can only be successful if it is all inclusive,” said Ambassador of Finland to India Nina Vaskunlahti after inaugurating a pilot of the project in Tain village of Nuh district in Haryana. With the Smartpur project, Nokia said it aims to create a sustainable ecosystem in villages where community members can leverage digital tools to bring efficiency in daily lives, transparency in governance, economic prosperity for households and ease of access to various government services and information. The project will work under the five key areas of development - health, education, livelihood, governance and finance - to build a holistic, digitally integrated village, the Finnish telecom gear maker said.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) on Wednesday said that it will move the “appropriate authority” and take “legal recourse” against the Walmart-Flipkart deal. According to CAIT, its team of lawyers is studying the deal. The confederation has described the agreement as “circumventing laws and will offend FDI policy once it is implemented and will create an uneven level playing field beside accomplishing hidden agenda of Walmart to reach out to offline trade through e-Commerce way”. “Government should closely monitor each passage of the deal since its not a merger of two companies but will have

There are technologies available which can convert waste/ plastic and municipal solid waste to drop in fuels. One ton of such waste has the potential to provide around 20 per cent of fuel. The statement said Rs 800 crore is investment needed to set up a 100 kilolitre per day bio refinery. At present Oil Marketing Companies are in the process of setting up 12 2G bio refineries with an investment of around Rs 10,000 crore. Further addition of 2G bio refineries across the Country will spur infrastructure investment in the rural areas and create jobs, it added. “By adopting 2G technologies, agricultural residues/waste which otherwise are burnt by the farmers can be converted to ethanol and can fetch a price for these waste if a market is developed for the same. It also allows use of surplus food grains for production of ethanol for blending with petrol with the approval of National Biofuel Coordination Committee, it said. Under the policy, “a viability gap funding scheme for 2G ethanol bio refineries of Rs 5000 crore in 6 years in addition to additional tax incentives, higher purchase price as compared to 1G biofuels” will be provided, it said. The policy also encourages setting up of supply chain mechanisms for biodiesel production from non-edible oilseeds, used cooking oil and short gestation crops. Mixing of one crore litre of bio-ethanol in petrol saves Rs 28 crore of foreign exchange on oil imports. “The ethanol supply year 2017-18 is likely to see a supply of around 150 crore litres of ethanol which will result in savings of over Rs 4000 crore of forex,” the statement said. New Delhi, May 16 (PTI): The Cabinet Wednesday approved the National Policy on Biofuels which allows doping of ethanol produced from damaged foodgrains, rotten potatoes, corn and sugar beet with petrol to cut oil imports by Rs 4,000 crore this year alone. Till now only ethanol produced from sugarcane was allowed to be mixed in petrol. A meeting of the Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the new policy which categorises biofuels as First Generation (1G), which produce bioethanol from molasses and bio-diesel from non-edible oilseeds. Second Generation (2G) ethanol can be produced from municipal solid waste and Third Generation (3G) fuels like bio-CNG. “The Policy expands the scope of raw material for ethanol production by allowing use of sugarcane juice, sugar containing materials like sugar beet, sweet sorghum, starch containing materials like corn, cassava, damaged food grains like wheat and broken rice, and rotten potatoes,” an official statement said.

Huawei and Alcatel collectively had a 24% overall market share. According to CyberMedia Research’s (CMR) report, Reliance Retail’s shipments declined 24% when compared to the previous quarter while Huawei witnessed a nine% sequential growth in unit shipments due to the growth in shipments of its models -- “E3372H-607” and “E5573Cs-609”. Reliance Retail’s JioFi model “JMR541” captured the top spot with 49% share in the data card market. “With Q1, 2018 being the end of the financial year vendors were busy clearing the previous stock than focusing on the fresh imports. Also, Reliance Retail imported huge shipments in January which gradually decreased by the month of March for the same reason,” Shipra Sinha, Lead Analyst, CyberMedia Research, said in a statement.

North Korea suspends talks with South; threatens to nix US summit

no longer have an interest in talks” and “will have to reconsider” attending the summit in Singapore. He said North Korea did have “high hopes” but that it was “very unfortunate that the US was provoking us ahead of the summit by spitting out ludicrous statements”. In an angry statement, North Korea’s Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-gwan accused the US of harbouring sinister intentions. He pointed the finger squarely at US National Security Adviser John Bolton. Bolton earlier said North Korea could follow a “Libya model” of verifiable denuclearisation, but Pyongyang in the past

had suggested that Libya may have escaped Western military intervention in 2011 had it kept its nuclear weapons programme. Bolton’s comments, Kim Kye-gwan said, were indicative of “an awfully sinister move to impose on our dignified state the destiny of Libya or Iraq which had been collapsed due to yielding the whole of their countries to big powers”. “It is absolutely absurd to dare compare (North Korea), a nuclear weapon state, to Libya which had been at the initial stage of nuclear development,” he said. “World knows too well that our country is neither Libya nor Iraq which have met miserable fate.” The inter-Korean talks were meant to take place on the southern side of the truce village of Panmunjom to discuss followup measures to the two Korean leaders’ summit in April. The summit agreement, billed the Panmunjom Declaration, called for formally ending the 195053 Korean War within the year and pursuing “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula.

D H A K A , M ay 1 6 (Agencies): Bangladesh’s 72-year-old opposition leader Khaleda Zia was granted bail on corruption charges Wednesday after her lawyers argued her health was at risk, paving the way for her to be released from jail. Zia was imprisoned in February after being accused of embezzling money intended for an orphanage, an allegation she said was politically motivated. Bangladesh has for years been locked in an epic showdown between Zia, who has served as prime minister three times, and her archrival, current leader Sheikh Hasina. In a unanimous ruling, the Supreme Court upheld a lower court’s decision to grant Zia bail while she appeals against the fiveyear jail term, her lawyer Joynal Abedin told AFP.

Seoul, May 16 (IANS): North Korea abruptly announced a suspension of high-level inter-Korean talks scheduled for Wednesday, citing ongoing US-South Korean military drills and also threatened to pull out of a summit with US President Donald Trump if Washington pushes it to give up nuclear weapons. North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the “Max Thunder” drills between the South Korean and US Air Forces “were a rehearsal for invasion of the North and a provocation amid warming interKorean ties”. It also called into question whether June 12 summit between North Korean leader Kim Jongun and Trump would go ahead as planned. “The US will have to undertake careful deliberations about the fate of the planned North Korea-US summit in light of this provocative military ruckus jointly conducted with the South Korean authorities,” the KCNA report said. “This (joint military) exercise targeting us... is a flagrant challenge to the

Kim’s statement, carried by the state media, said that if the US “corners us and unilaterally demands we give up nuclear weapons we will

According to Wong, the US has a number of efforts across the Indo-Pacific and truly around the world to build a capacity of partner governments to understand lifecycle costing, to understand what a proper bid process is up to international standards and to understand how they can structure debt.

Chlorine ‘used in February attack in Syria’ L o n d o n, m ay 1 6 (Agencies): The global chemical weapons watchdog has said chlorine is likely to have been used in an attack on a rebel-held town in northern Syria in February. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) found chlorine had been “released from cylinders by mechanical impact” in Saraqeb, BBC reported. It did not assign blame for the incident, in line with its mandate. Medics and activists said at the time that chlorine-filled bombs had been dropped by a government helicopter. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied ever using chemical weapons. However, a joint UNOPCW mission that has now ended said it was confident that government forces had used the nerve agent Sarin and chlorine in four attacks. The OPCW is also currently investigating a suspected chemical attack last month in the then rebel-held town of Douma, in which medics say 40 people were killed. The US, UK and France said they were confident that chemical weapons had been used in Douma by government forces and in response carried out missile strikes on Syria’s “chemical weapons infrastructure”.

Pope says ‘very worried’ by Mideast violence

VATICAN CITY, MAY 16 (Agencies): Pope Francis said Wednesday he was “very worried” by escalating violence in the Middle East after 60 Gazans were shot dead by Israeli troops while protesting the US embassy’s move to Jerusalem. “I am very worried about the escalation of tensions in the Holy Land and the Middle East, and about the spiral of violence which moves us ever further away from the path of peace, dialogue and negotiation,” he said during his weekly audience at the Vatican. “I express my great sorrow for the dead and wounded and I am close through prayer and affection to all those who suffer,” he added. Calling for “dialogue, justice and peace,” Francis said

JERUSALEM, May 16 (Agencies): Israel and Turkey exchanged diplomatic barbs Wednesday as the spat between the former allies continued to escalate following deadly violence along Israel’s border with Gaza. A day after it expelled the Israeli ambassador, Turkey asked Israel’s consul general in Istanbul to leave as well. Israel, in turn, summoned a top Turkish diplomat to be reprimanded for the humiliation of Israel’s ambassador as he was kicked out of the country. The exchanges came less than two years after the countries reconciled and exchanged ambassadors after six years of animosity. Once close allies in an Arab-dominated neighborhood, Israel and Turkey’s ties began to decline after now-President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose

party has roots in Turkey’s Islamist movement, first came to power as prime minister in 2003. Relations imploded in 2010 after a confrontation between Israeli commandos and a pro-Islamic Turkish flotilla trying to breach the blockade of Gaza left 10 Turkish activists dead. Erdogan has since often lashed out at Israel over its clashes with Hamas militants in Gaza and he led the international criticism of Israel after nearly 60 Palestinians were killed Monday in the bloodiest day of cross-border violence since a devastating 2014 war between Israel and Hamas. He also ratcheted up his rhetoric against the U.S. Embassy move to Jerusalem. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu retorted that a “man whose hands are drenched in the blood of countless Kurd-

Islamabad, May 16 (IANS): An Anti-Terrorism Court here resumed hearing of the 2008 Mumbai terror attack case on Wednesday, summoning the last two Pakistani prosecution witnesses and asking the government about the availability of 27 Indian witnesses in the next hearing “so as to conclude the trial expeditiously”. War incites war, violence incites violence.” Israel has come under mounting international pressure after its forces opened fire on the Gaza border on Monday, killing 60 protesters who had massed alongside the fence to protest as the US moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. At least 2,400 other Palestinians were wounded in what was the bloodiest day of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the 2014 Gaza war. Francis has on several occasions expressed support for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, indirectly criticizing US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Israel’s claim to Jerusalem as its capital.

Pointing out that the department has not called interviews for primary teacher since 2012, the ll Nagaland Pre-Service Teachers Association has appealed to the department to call for offline submission at the earliest if it could not be done online. Further, the association also sought clarification from the department with regard to 532 posts of primary teachers that were vacant during the freeze period. As per RTI reply from the department, ANPSTA said there were 360 retirements and 317 vacancies

The association expressed concern where all those vacancies were and whether they were being hijacked. Asserting that status of those vacant posts remained a mystery till date, ANPSTA has, urged the responsible department to “take necessary measure and solve the mystery at the earliest.”

SC justifies its verdict on SC/ST Act

Supreme Court of India.

NEW DELHI, May 16 (AGENCIES): The Supreme Court on Wednesday justified its March 20 verdict on the SC/ST Act, saying even Parliament cannot allow the arrest of a person without a fair procedure and asserted that it has protected the fundamental rights to life and liberty of innocents by ordering prior scrutiny of complaints. The Centre opposed the verdict saying that courts cannot order to supplant or substitute a provision in the law enacted by the Parliament. A bench of Justices Adarsh Goel and U U Lalit said, “we are not living in

a civilised society, if we allow an innocent to go behind bar on a one-sided version”. The bench deferred the hearing of the matter after the summer vacation and said it would hear all the parties concerned in detail. Justice Goel, who is heading the bench will retire on July 6, 2018, soon after the court reopens after summer vacation on July 2. During the hearing, the bench said, “There are series of judgements which say that Article 21 (Right to life and liberty) of the Constitution has to be dealt in every provi-

sion. Article 21, cannot be denied even by Parliament. Even our Constitution does not allow the arrest of an individual without a provision”. Attorney General K K Venugopal, appearing for Centre, cited various apex court verdicts and said that courts cannot supplant or substitute or fill in the gap of the provisions in a law enacted by the Parliament. The top court said that fundamental rights of an individual cannot be protected if an innocent is jailed on a complaint without its prior scrutiny. Venugopal said that the Constitution and various apex court verdicts dealt with fundamental right to life and right to dignity. “Right to dignity is also associated with Right to Job but from where in a developing economy can we provide jobs to everyone. In the welfare state concept, it is very difficult and courts have to look into every aspect,” the Attorney General said and added that there were various verdicts of courts which were inconsistent to each other.

The bench, while referring to Kumari Madhuri Patil case of 1995 that had dealt with a process of verification of caste certificate, said the court had carved out a complete machinery as there was no existing procedure in place. “Constitutional courts have to ensure life, liberty and fair procedure to everyone in the society. Courts have power to ensure that fundamental right of an individual are not trampled upon,” it said. The bench said that due to paucity of time, the arguments cannot be completed and deferred the matter for further hearing after summer vacation saying the apex court registry will give the next date of hearing. On May 3, the apex court had rejected the Centre’s demand for a stay on its verdict on the SC/ST Act and said it favoured “100 per cent” the protection of the rights of these communities and punishing those guilty of atrocities against them. It had also strongly disagreed with the Centre’s contention that its March 20 verdict had led

to the loss of lives in the violence that had broken out later in several states. The top court had said under the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989, theoretically a person cannot get anticipatory bail, but soon after his arrest, he can get regular bail even in offences where the punishment is just six months. It had clarified that the court has not asked for non-registration of an FIR for the offences under the SC/ST Act, but sought verification before registration of FIR, so that innocents do not get penalised. The apex court had on March 20 said that on “several occasions”, innocent citizens were being termed as accused and public servants deterred from performing their duties, which was never the intention of the legislature while enacting the SC/ ST Act. Several states were rocked by wide spread violence and clashes following a ‘Bharat Bandh’ call given by several SC/ST organisations protesting the top court’s March 20 order, that claimed eight lives.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre and the Indian Air Force (IAF) on a plea alleging illegal mining on defence land on the banks of the Yamuna river in Faridabad and Noida. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C. Hari Shankar asked the respondents to file a response on the plea and listed the matter for

September 19 for further hearing. The court was hearing a petition filed by a man, who claimed to be a whistleblower, seeking direction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to inquire into the matter. The petitioner has alleged that illegal sand mining was continuing on defence land at the Tilpat Ranges 1 and 2 on the banks of the Yamuna in Faridabad (Haryana) and Noida (Uttar Pradesh).

files second 12 dead in A.P. boat mishap; CBI chargesheet in search on for 10 missing PNB fraud case

The boat, with about 40 passengers, was on its way to Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundry) from Devipatnam when the tragedy struck.

Amaravati, May 16 (AGENCIES): At least 12 people died in the boat capsize in the Godavari in Andhra Pradesh with searches still on for 10 other missing passengers, feared drowned, officials said on May 16. The State government announced an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the kin of the victims of the mishap that occurred on May 15 near Manturu village in

East Godavari district with bad weather considered a probable cause. Rescue teams that toiled for hours, to first trace the sunken boat and later to pull it ashore, have so far recovered 12 bodies, including that of two children, officials said. Efforts were still on to trace the other 10, they said. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who visited the accident spot, said human

error was the main reason for the mishap and assured that those guilty would be brought to book. “There was gale yesterday and the boat was also laden with cement bags and twowheelers. That caused the mishap. We will not spare anyone responsible for the incident,” he said. Though a warning about the inclement weather was issued at least half an hour in advance, there was no communication system in the boat to receive it, Naidu said. He also announced government job would be provided to an eligible person each from the families of the victims and a house would also be built for them. The boat, with about 40 passengers, was on its way to Rajamahendravaram (Rajahmundr y) from Devipatnam when the tragedy struck.

Won’t allow anything threatening India’s security, says North Korea New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Even as North Korea keeps the world in suspense over its proposed talks with the US and South Korea, the East Asian nation has given its assurance that it will not allow any action that will create concerns for India’s security. The assurance came during Minister of State for External Affairs V.K. Singh’s two-day visit to North Korea that concluded on Wednesday. This was the first ministeriallevel visit from India to North Korea in 20 years. According to a statement issued by the External Affairs Ministry, Singh held discussions with Vice President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly Kim Yong Dae, Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho, Minister of Culture Pak Chun Nam and Vice Foreign Minister Choe Hui Chol “on a range of issues covering political, regional, economic, educational and cultural cooperation between the two countries”. The statement said the North Korean side “provided an overview of some of the recent developments in the Korean Peninsula”. Singh reiterated India’s support to the joint peace initiative of North and South Korean leadership, encouraging both sides for their efforts towards establishment of peace and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula. Singh also highlighted the threat from nuclear proliferation, in particular India’s concerns in the context of the proliferation linkages with India’s neighbourhood.

V.K. Singh with unidentified North Korean official and Atul Gotsurve (centre), India’s ambassador in Pyongyang.

“The DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) side emphasised that, as a friendly country, DPRK will never allow any action that would create concerns for India’s security,” the External Affairs Ministry statement said. “The two sides decided to explore possibilities of cooperation in areas of mutual interest including vocational education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, promotion of yoga and traditional medicines,” it stated. “Both sides agreed to strengthen people-topeople contacts through educational and cultural exchange, to mark 45 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.” After weeks of improving ties on the Korean Peninsula, capped by the dramatic image of North Korean leader Kim Jongun shaking hands with South Korean President

Moon Jae-in, things took a sudden step backwards on Wednesday. In a missive delivered to the South in the early hours during the day, the North said it was suspending high-level talks scheduled for Wednesday in view of “provocative military disturbances with South Korea”. After Kim announced that he will relinquish his nuclear programme and offered to hold talks with US President Donald Trump, scheduled in June, Pyongyang on Wednesday also threatened to abandon the talks if Washington continued to insist on pushing it “into a corner” on nuclear disarmament. A statement published by the state-run Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) said Pyongyang would never accept economic assistance from the US in exchange for unilaterally abandoning its nuclear programme.

Varanasi flyover collapse: official call it ‘natural disaster’; blames Modi

the city a couple of days ago could be the reason behind the incident. “Preliminary findings point towards a loose crossbeam connection or a bearing failure. The beam may have got dislodged from its socket because of the thunder-storm and fell. So it may be a natural disaster,” Mittal said while speaking to the Hindustan Times. The senior officer said the pressure to complete such projects was always there when asked whether the constraint of the deadline to complete the project could have caused the flyover to collapse. “Traffic movement should not have been allowed

New Delhi, May 16 (AGENCIES): Indore emerged as the cleanest city, followed by Bhopal and Chandigarh in the government’s cleanliness survey. Indore was the cleanest city last year as well but that survey was conducted only for around 430 cities. This time it was conducted for around 4,200 cities. The names of the worst performing cities would be announced on the day the awards would be presented, Puri said.

1.46 lakh CCTVs in Delhi schools in six months: Minister New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): As many as 1.46 lakh CCTVs will be installed in over 1,000 Delhi government schools in six months at an estimated cost of Rs 597 crore, Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Satyendar Jain said here on Wednesday. The CCTVs will be installed in classrooms and open areas, except bathrooms. Jain said that a tender has been floated and seven companies have participated in the bidding process. The Minister said that 1,46,800 closed-circuit televisions will be installed in 1,028 city schools. The CCTV footage will be stored in each school and automatically erased after 30 days, adding that parents will be issued an ID and password to view footage.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): The Central government on Wednesday again sought a report from the West Bengal government over the violence during panchayat elections in the state earlier this week that left at least 10 dead. “The Ministr y of Home Affairs has sought a detailed report from the West Bengal government in view of the violence during panchayat elections,” a senior Home Ministry official said. More than 50 people were also injured on Monday in the violence during the three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions’ elections in West Bengal. The Ministry sought the report again after the West Bengal government submitted a “sketchy” report on Tuesday in response to its first query sent on Monday. A youth was beaten to death as he tried to enter polling premises in Nadia district, while a Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist was shot dead in South 24 Parganas district’s Kultali in West Bengal. The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) had on Monday claimed that one of their activists was killed in a bomb attack in North 24 Parganas district’s Amdanga.

Kejriwal asked to join probe into assault; AAP fumes

Arvind Kejriwal and Anshu Prakash.

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been asked to join the investigation into an alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash by two AAP MLAs, police said on Wednesday, sparking an angry reaction from the AAP. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Harendra Singh said Kejriwal had been told to present himself at his house or office at 11 a.m. on Friday. The officer had earlier told IANS that Kejriwal had been told to present himself at the Civil Lines Police Station. Singh added that they were yet to receive a reply from the Chief Minister’s Office. On February 20, the Chief Secretary alleged that he was assaulted by two Aam Aadmi Party MLAs in the presence of Kejriwal at the Chief Minister’s residence. The two, Amanatullah Khan and Prakash Jarwal, were arrested.

The AAP alleged that the police order proved that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was misusing police to target his opponents. “Modiji is getting this done... First time in the history of India, the police are questioning the Chief Minister of a state in a fake case,” AAP spokesperson Saurabh Bharadwaj said. He said Modi “pressured” the Chief Secretary to file this case of assault so as to harass Kejriwal whose government, he said, was working well in the sectors of education, health, electricity and water. “Modiji is misusing the police to trouble him (Kejriwal) but the public is with Kejriwal.” Delhi Police have questioned Bibhav Kumar, Kejriwal’s private secretary, in connection with the case. So far, the police have questioned 11 AAP MLAs who were present in the meeting at the Chief Minister’s residence on February 19.

BJP lost 4 out of 5 closest-fought seats in K’taka

New Delhi, May 16 (IANS): As the BJP fell short of the half-way mark in the Karnataka polls, results show that it lost four of the five closelycontested seats where the victory margin was less than a thousand votes. In fact, the fate of all the five constituencies was decided by a margin of less than 700 votes. While the Congress won Maski, Pavagada, Hirekerur and Kundgol, where the difference between the number of votes polled by the winning candidate and the closest opponent varied from a meagre 213 to 634 votes, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won Aland seat by just 697 votes. The BJP candidates came in second place in Maski, Hireker ur and Kundgol, whereas in Pavagada (Tumkur district), Congress candidate Venkataramanappa polled 72,974 votes to defeat Janata Dal (Secular)’s K.M. Thimmarayappa by 409 votes. In Maski constituency in Raichur district, Congress candidate Pratapgouda Patil defeated BJP’s Basanagowda Turvihal by 213 votes. Patil polled 60,387 votes against Turvihal’s 60,174.

BJP trying to ‘bribe’ its way to power: Kumaraswamy BENGALURU, MAY 16 (PTI): Toiling hard to control the levers of power in Karnataka, the BJP and JD(S)-Congress combine today staked claim to form the government amid bribery charges by the newly formed alliance’s leader H D Kumaraswamy against the BJP that it offered his MLAs Rs 100 crore to break ranks and back the saffron party. The allegations were promptly dismissed by the BJP, with Union minister Prakash Javadekar dubbing them as “imaginary”. Outgoing chief minister Siddaramaiah mounted a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi alleging that he was encouraging “horsetrading” to ensure the BJP returned to power in the state despite falling short of a majority. The BJP’s B S Yeddyurappa and JD(S)’s Kumaraswamy were elected leaders of their respective legislative groups and went to Raj Bhavan where they

staked claim to form the government, a day after Karnataka delivered a split verdict in the Assembly polls. It was their second meeting with Governor Vajubhai Vala since yesterday. Soon after his election, Kumaraswamy made the stunning claim that the BJP offered the MLAs of his party Rs 100 crore and

Malaysia’s freed Anwar Ibrahim hails ‘new dawn’ after poll win

L o n d o n , M ay 1 6 (Agencies): Reformist politician Anwar Ibrahim has hailed a “new dawn” for Malaysia on his release from prison, days after a stunning opposition election win, BBC reported. Mr Anwar told jubilant supporters he fully backed his ally and former rival, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed. Earlier he was pardoned from what was widely seen as a politically motivated conviction for sodomy. Mr Mahathir, who sought the pardon, has promised to step aside for Mr Anwar to become prime minister within two years. Once seen as a future leader, Anwar Ibrahim then fell out with the government. He was jailed for a second time three years ago on what he said were trumped-up

sodomy charges. After his release, he told a news conference he thanked the people of Malaysia, who “stood by the principles of democracy and freedom”. “They demand change.” Mr Anwar said he had forgiven Mr Mahathir and stressed he would give full

support to the new government, though not immediately be part of it. “I and Mahathir have buried the hatchet already, it was a long time ago,” Mr Anwar told the news conference at his home. For years he had headed Malaysia’s opposition movement, which last week

defeated the former ruling party for the first time in the country’s history. Last week’s shock election victory followed a reconciliation between Mr Anwar and his 92-year-old erstwhile political mentor, who sacked and jailed him 20 years ago during his first stint as prime minister. Mr Anwar walked free out of a hospital in the capital Kuala Lumpur where he had been undergoing treatment for a shoulder problem. Supporters camped out at the hospital trailed him to the Istana Negara royal palace where he met Mr Mahathir before being pardoned by the king. “Long live Anwar,” supporters on motorbikes yelled as they pulled into the royal compound in support of their newly-freed leader.

Kabul, May 16 (IANS): At least 10 Afghan soldiers and 44 Taliban militants have been killed after clashes broke out in four districts of the country’s Ghazni province overnight, an Army official said on Wednesday. Eight militants were injured in the clashes. The clashes continued till Wednesday morning but the security situation was later brought under control, said the official. On Tuesday, at least five civilians, 25 soldiers and nearly 300 militants were killed after the Taliban launched a massive attack in Farah province.

Dubai, May 16 (PTI): A wealthy Christian businessman from India has gifted a USD 3 lakh mosque to hundreds of Muslim workers ahead of Ramzan in the UAE, a media report said today. Saji Cheriyan, 49, who hails from Kerala’s Kayamkulam, built the mosque for Muslim workers living in a worker accommodation that he rented out to 53 companies in Fujairah, Gulf News reported. He will name the mosque as Mariam, Umm Eisa. Cheriyan said he decided to build the mosque after he saw workers taking taxis to go to the nearest mosque. “They have to spend at least 20 dirhams to go to Fujairah city or another industrial area to attend the Juma prayer in a mosque. So, I thought it will make them happy if I build a mosque here next to their accommodation,” he said.

The businessman, who had landed in the UAE in 2003 with just a few hundred dirhams, is gifting the 1.3 million dirham mosque to hundreds of workers this Ramzan, the report said. The mosque in the East Ville Real Estate complex in Al Hayl Industrial Area can accommodate 250 worshippers at a time, it said. Facilities for another 700 to pray in the interlocked courtyard of the mosque, which will be shaded by the time it opens, have also been arranged, it said. The construction began over a year ago. Now the mosque is all set to open with the full support of Awqaf in Fujairah. “The Awqaf officials were surprised and happy when they got to know I am a Christian who wishes to build a mosque. They have offered me all the support and were ready to offer free

electricity and water and other facilities,” Cheriyan said. However, all that he has accepted from Awqaf are the carpet and sound system for the mosque. “When word spread about my mosque, many other people also offered cash donations, construction materials like sand and paint. But I have politely refused all those offers as I would like to pay from my pocket for this mosque,” he said. He said he has opted for the name Mariam, Umm Eisa (Mary, the Mother of Jesus) for the mosque after an Abu Dhabi mosque was renamed so in 2017. Cheriyan, an Orthodox Christian by birth, had previously built a church for his parish in Dibba and also keeps the doors of a multipurpose hall in the East Ville Complex for various other groups of Christian believers to pray.

U.S. Senate panel advances Ghani apologises after Afghan Panamagate: Pak anti-graft court asks air strike kills 30 children Trump nominee to lead CIA Sharif to record statement on Friday WASHINGTON, May 16 (Agencies): A U.S. Senate committee voted on Wednesday in favour of Gina Haspel, President Donald Trump’s nominee to be CIA director, and she is expected to be confirmed by the full Senate as soon as next week, Reuters reported. The Intelligence Committee voted 10-5 behind closed doors to approve the nomination, which was expected after two of its seven Democratic members, Vice Chairman Mark Warner and Joe Manchin, both said they would join the panel’s

eight Republicans in backing Haspel. Despite criticism - including from Republican Senators Rand Paul and John McCain - because of her ties to the CIA’s former harsh interrogation program for terrorism suspects, Haspel is expected to win confirmation as the first woman to lead the spy agency. Haspel, a 33-year CIA veteran, is currently the agency’s acting director. Her confirmation hearing last week was dominated by questions about her part in the spy agency’s use of methods such as water-

boarding, a type of simulated drowning widely considered torture, more than a decade ago under President George W. Bush. McCain, who has been away from Washington all year as he battles brain cancer, urged his fellow senators last week not to vote for Haspel. Tortured himself while a prisoner of war in Vietnam, McCain cited Haspel’s role in the interrogation program, saying the country should only use methods to keep itself safe that are “as right and just as the values we aspire to live up to and promote in the world.”

K ABU L , M a y 1 6 (Agencies): Afghan President Ashraf Ghani apologised on Wednesday (May 16) to the families of civilians, mainly children, killed when the country’s air force sprayed an outdoor religious gathering with rockets and machine gun fire last month. The Apr 2 airstrike on a ceremony attended by hundreds of men and boys in Dasht-e-Archi district - a Taliban stronghold in the northern province of Kunduz - left at least 36 people dead including 30 children, a United Nations investigation has shown.

Seventy-one people were wounded, including 51 children, it said, adding that it had “credible information” the tolls could be even higher. Originally the government and military had said the Afghan Air Force targeted a Taliban base where senior members of the group were planning attacks. The defence ministry initially denied any civilians had been hurt, then claimed the Taliban had shot them. On Wednesday Ghani met families as well as local elders and apologised, a statement from the presidential palace said.

Islamabad, May 16 (PTI): A Pakistani anti-graft court trying ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif for allegedly buying properties in the UK through corruption today asked him to record his statement in the Panama Papers case on Friday. T h r e e c a s e s we r e launched last year against Sharif, 68, and his family including the Avenfield case about posh properties in London which were allegedly bought in 1990s when he twice served as prime minister. S h a r i f ’s d a u g h t e r

Maryam, sons Hassan and Hussain and son-in-law Muhammad Safdar are coaccused in the case. The court also asked his daughter and son-in-law to record their statements. His two sons have been declared absconders as they are living abroad and never appeared before the court. Judge Muhammad Bashir ordered to provide a list of questions regarding the case. Under the law, the three accused will record their testimonies and also face cross-examinations by the prosecution.

Maryam and Safdar are co-accused only in Avenfield properties case while Sharif and his two sons are coaccused in all three cases. Sharif ’s trial is going on in all the cases. The statements by the accused will conclude the trial and the court issue the verdict which is expected to be announced any time before June 9, which is the latest deadline set by the Supreme Court to conclude the cases against Sharif. The cases were instituted after the Supreme Court disqualified Sharif on July 28 last year.

stage. Although the real summer heat of Dimapur is yet to kick in, all those who attended the show would totally agree with me when I say, “there definitely was a lot of energy at the venue.” The show was more memorable since it was also LOR’s frontman Clement Imsong’s birthday, and birthday greetings kept pouring in as the band rolled on covering classic songs a lot of youths grew up listening to. On the other hand, taking the role of equilibrium, 3’s Company gave some wonderful rendition of easy listening songs like Fix You by Coldplay, Cloud Number 9 by Bryan Adams, Don’t Let Me Go by The Beatles, you can try and guess the rest. Sharing the stage in turns

with LOR, 3’s Company, with their amazing vocals (including the two guitarists on the backing) supported by pleasant sounding acoustic guitars, the show was somewhat like teleporting from a rock concert to an unplugged live. Ever since LOR came into existence, they have been on an ascending order and their fan base is ever expanding. Recently, the band had bombarded their social media accounts with their photos at a recording studio and fingers crossed; fans can definitely expect an EP from the band anytime in the later part of this year. Who knows the band might be all locked and loaded to release their originals. (Aneila Seyie Keretsü)

“During one of the film festivals that took place at the Siri Fort auditorium, there was a group of people who waited for a byte. That time I did not even know what a byte is. I kept running away, avoiding them and by the end, there was one girl who was determined for a byte, so I thought why disappoint her. “I made sense from her question and gave her an answer for the same. While leaving, in the end she asked me what is my name,” narrated the filmmaker, much to the audience’s amusement. “That is the new media. They don’t use their mind, they only want to ask what do you feel about this or this,” said Gopalakrishnan. (IANS)

he star of this year’s biggest box-office hit is now turning his sights to YouTube’s subscription service. Robert Downey Jr is following up the Avengers movies with an online series about artificial intelligence, scheduled for 2019. The Iron Man actor plans to present the eightpart documentary, as well as co-produce it with his wife, Susan Downey. One expert said the move gave the YouTube Red pay service a boost ahead of its planned global expansion. “If you look at all of YouTube Red’s original stuff, most of it is people who became famous on YouTube,” Tom Harrington of Enders Analysis told the BBC. “This is just them diversifying. It gives the whole product offering a look that isn’t a bunch of kids talking at a camera and pulling

pranks, which is the dismissive attitude that a lot of people take to vloggers.” YouTube Red first launched in 2015 as an answer to other paid subscription services such as Netflix, Amazon Video and Spotify. Subscriptions cost $10 (£7.42) per month. It is currently available only in the US, Australia, Mexico, New Zealand and South America, but the company has said that it plans to launch in more countries this year. Harrington said that working with stars such as Robert Downey Jr was a way of expanding the

platform beyond its original scope, which focused on monetising personalities who became famous on YouTube. “It’s about perception of what’s offered, and they’re obviously looking to shift that,” he told the BBC. “Suddenly you’ve got a show with Robert Downey Jr and AI and you think, ‘Maybe I’ve got YouTube Red wrong, maybe I need to look into this.’” The announcement of the AI series follows the successful run of another YouTube Red original. Cobra Kai, which is based on the Karate Kid franchise, topped Parrot Analytics’ weekly top 10 television charts for digital originals last week. Eight days after the series’ debut this month, YouTube announced that it would be renewed for a second season. (BBC)

n a show that came as a total surprise, a pleasant one though, Lords of Rock (LOR) treated their fans and rock & roll lovers with a free show, hard to believe but yes everything at the venue was free. Held at Upstairs, a place which can pretty much be referred to as LOR’s ‘second jam room,’ the band gave rock and roll lovers a much needed break at the time of the year when concerts, especially those relating to rock music and stuff, goes into hibernation. Not deviating from their usual set list of song ranging from hard rockers like Ozzy Osbourne and Whitesnake to people favourites like Guns N’ Roses, LOR kept their fans on their toes as long as they were on

eteran filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan, who in his glittering career extending close to five decades has won 16 National Awards so far, finds the new craze of selfies a disaster. The 76-year-old was here at The Nehru Memorial Museum Library for a discussion on “Revisting Ray”, a conference and exhibition on the filmmaker, on Wednesday along with filmmaker Amol Paleker. Recollecting few incidents, Gopalakrishnan pointed out out a lack of decorum. “I might be unfamiliar with social media but one thing I find is a big disaster is ‘selfies’ . It is impossible. Once someone kept asking for a selfie, so I stood. But then he kept his hand on my shoulder which I had to remove and scolded him... I said, ‘How can you behave like this? Are you my age? We are not even friends.’,” he said. Citing another example of a young mediaperson who kept chasing him for a byte during a film festival in the captial, Gopalakrishnan higlighted the ignorance of people today.

India beat China in women’s ACT

Vandana Katariya (4th, 11th minutes) scored a brace while Gurjit Kaur converted a penalty corner to ensure India’s comfortable win.

Don g h a e C i t y (South Korea), May 16 (IANS): Defending Champions India continued their winning performance as they beat World No.8 China 3-1 in their second round-robin match at the fifth Women’s Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) at the Sunrise Stadium here on Wednesday. India had earlier beaten Japan 4-1 in their opening match on Sunday. It was experienced forward Vandana Katariya who

Nagaland Post, Dimapur THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018

starred in India’s victory as she scored double goals in the 4th and 11th minute that gave a formidable lead early on for the Defending Champions while Gurjit Kaur (51st) was the other goal scorer for India. India were in attack mode right from the start. While a constructive defence against a strong Chinese squad was imperative, India showed zeal as they pushed for an early goal. It was impeccable team work between Lilima Minz, Navjot Kaur

and Vandana that ensured India were put ahead of China by a goal in the fourth minute. An assist by Navjot to Lilima who used a reverse shot to the post found a perfect deflection off Vandana’s stick. Their second goal came off Udita’s clever assist to Vandana who smashed it past China goalkeeper giving India a comfortable 2-0 lead. Udita had taken the shot on goal herself but was obstructed by the Chinese goalkeeper; she picked up

the rebound, but surrounded by Chinese defenders she pushed the ball to Vandana who took her time to channel the ball into the goal post. Having pushed China on the back foot early on, the World No.8 squad were desperate for a breakthrough. Their moment of reckoning came in the 15th minute when Wen Dan converted a well-struck field goal to narrow the lead to 2-1 before going into the first break. China had earlier won four back-to-back penalty corners but could not breach Savita’s fine goalkeeping. While the second quarter saw India keep up the momentum and show excellent defensive skills that kept China from equalising, the third quarter saw Savita showcase good goalkeeping skills to keep China from converting their fifth penalty corner. India put up a attacking front yet again in the fourth quarter that fetched an important penalty corner in the 51st minute. Gurjit Kaur, who is India’s lone drag flick expert, made no mistake in swiftly striking the ball to the centre of the post taking India’s lead to 3-1.

ICC Strategic Group report fears formation of rebel governing body NEW DELHI, May 16 (PTI): A breakaway rebel governing body, the proposed T10 format and lack of interest from broadcasters are among “18 threats” that international cricket faces right now, according to a report of the ICC’s Strategic Working Group (SWG) which will discuss these issues with the BCCI on Thursday. The report, which is in possession of PTI, claims to be a SWOT analysis of the issues confronting world cricket. The SWG comprises Cricket Australia’s David Peever, BCCI CEO Rahul Johri, Singapore’s Imran Khwaja, Cricket South Africa’s Patricia Karambami, West Indies Cricket Board’s Dave Cameron and women’s representative Clare Connor. The Group will update BCCI office-bearers -- Acting President CK Khanna, Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary and Treasurer Aniruddh Chaudhry -- on global strategy for cricket. “Yes, there has been threat to ICC. A very wellk n ow n f o r m e r c r i c k e t administrator (currently

banned) along with an Indian TV channel and an Australian lawyer had approached a lot of players and officials in order to form a parallel global body. They had named it ‘Operation Watershed’ then,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on condition of anonymity. “They wanted to form parallel associations in each country and were offering a lot of money to the players. The project didn’t take off but there’s no reason that it won’t take off once again,” the official said. The ICC analysis does not take names. However, it is interesting to note that in 2016, there were reports of sacked IPL commissioner Lalit Modi approaching officials from England and Australia to form a parallel body, a speculation that dies down as quickly as it took off. Another matter of concern is the proposed T10 format amid statements from stars such as former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum that Test cricket will not be sustainable in the long run. “The T10 league

is also a matter of concern. More so, it was organised by Emirates Cricket Board (last December) with a lot of current players like Eoin Morgan, Shoaib Malik, Dwayne Bravo taking part,” the official said. These threats could be directly linked to point No. 8 in the report which states: “Uncontrolled private investment into sports by commercial operators whose interests are aligned with short term financial gains rather than long term health and growth of sports.” Also, football’s growth in traditional cricket nations is also listed as a threat in the SWG analysis along with a “lack of competitive tension in broadcast market”. “In a way, it is true. Save Star and Sony (networks), there aren’t many who are ready to invest huge sums in cricket. So if it’s a two-horse race, then you know that there aren’t new broadcasters coming in,” the official pointed out. The report also speaks about “Collapse of traditional broadcast/sponsorship.”

to 8-0 this postseason at the Boston Garden. “We really lean on him,” said Brown of Horford. “He has been doing it all year. That is why they pay him the big bucks.” The Celtics, who overcame a double digit deficit, have never blown a 2-0 series lead in the postseason. Game three is Sunday in Cleveland. Brown said they can’t let up in game three because Cavaliers superstar James usually raises his game another notch after a loss. “We need tremendous focus. He (James) one of best players of all time. But if there is anybody I would put my money on it would be this group,” Brown said. The Celtics used a bal-

anced attack as a half dozen players reached double figures. Cleveland had 15 turnovers leading to 13 Boston points and the Celtics had just six turnovers. James also delivered 12 assists and 10 rebounds, scoring 21 of Cleveland’s 27 points in the first quarter. His 42 points marked his fifth 40point game of these playoffs. James had just 15 points and missed all five of his threepoint attempts in a game one defeat. “We have the opportunity go back home and take home court,” James said. “They did what they had to do to protect home court and now it is our time as well. We will see what we

are made of on Saturday.” Tuesday’s game got physical as the Celtics pulled out all the stops to try and contain James. James appeared to strain his neck in a firsthalf collision. The Cavaliers sagged in the second half, where they were outscored 59-39 by the Celtics. Cleveland coach Tyronn Lue said they need to be more physical and referred to the Boston players as goons. Kevin Love finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Cleveland. Kyle Korver came off the bench to score 11 points but starters Tristan Thompson, JR Smith and George Hill combined for just 11 points in the loss.

Mumbai beat Kings XI to stay alive champions Mumbai Indians from a mid-innings slump to a competitive 186 for 8 in the crucial game at the Wankhade stadium here. Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start, reaching 57-1 after five overs but they lost three wickets in quick succession, including two off successive balls, against the pace bowling of Andrew Tye (4-16) before Pollard (50 off 23 balls) and Krunal Pandya (32 off 23 balls) resurrected the stuttering innings. Before this knock, Pollard had only scored a paltry 83 runs in 8 matches and was dropped from the playing XI but his 65-run stand with Krunal in 36 balls, steered Mumbai Indians out of trouble after they had slumped to 71/4. Tye wrecked havoc on Mumbai’s top and middle order and his victims included Evin Lewis (9), Ishan Kishan (20) and Suryakumar Yadav (27). After a cautious start, Krunal stuck two consecutive sixes and a four in the 12th over off Marcus Stonis, while Pollard followed it up with two sixes and as many fours in the next two overs. However, just when

they were looking good, Krunal threw his wicket away. But that did not dither Pollard who kept hitting his shots and raced to his fifty in just 22 balls studded with five fours and three sixes. But as the West Indian all-rounder was poised for a big score, Ravichandran Ashwin (2/18) removed him in the 16th over, bringing Punjab back into the game. Hardik Pandya (9) and Ben Cutting (4) too fell cheaply. Earlier, put into bat, Yadav and Lewis managed to put just 37 runs for the first wicket. Tye cleaned up Lewis. One down Kishan’s stay at the crease was also cut short by Tye, who stuck in his second over. And on the very next delivery, Tye removed a set Yadav (27) as the defending champions slumped to 59/3. Skipper Rohit Sharma’s (6) poor run also continued. Meanwhile, the two flood-lights went off after the 10th over and play was halted for about 12 minutes. Chasing 187 to win, Rahul blasted 10 fours and three sixes in his 60-ball 94-run innings and shared a 111-run second wicket partnership with Aaron Finch (46) to take Punjab to the brink of a successful runchase but Bumrah scalped three wickets in his second spell to derail the chase. Mumbai Indians thus registered their sixth win to joined Kings XI and Rajasthan Royals at 12 points in the table. Kings XI were comfortably placed at 145/1 in 16 overs when Bumrah came back to bowl his second spell and the Mumbaikar removed Finch and Marcus Stoinis (1) before dimissing Rahul in the 19th over. Earlier, Australian seamer Tye returned with figures of 4-0-16-4 and skipper Ravichandran Ashwin (2/18) took two wickets to restrict Mumbai Indians to 186-8. West Indian Kieron Pollard struck a blistering fifty to rescue defending

Bengaluru FC skipper Sunil Chhetri in action against Abahani Dhaka in an AFC Cup encounter at the Bangabandhu National Stadium, in Bangladesh on Wednesday.

Dhaka, May 16 (IANS): It took a bit of everything -- a good show in Dhaka, drama in Guwahati and a big push from a resolute Aizawl FC -- as Bengaluru FC finished as champions of the South Zone and booked a place in the knock-out stages of the AFC Cup for a fourth straight season. Goals from Daniel Segovia (13th), Nishu Kumar (16th, 58th) and Sunil Chhetri (60th) gave Bengaluru a 4-0 win over Abahani Limited Dhaka. But it was the game in Guwahati that would

decide Bengaluru’s fate where Aizawl, who needed a win or a draw against New Radiant of Maldives for the former I-League champions to go through. Aizawl chose the threepoint route to aid Bengaluru, beating New Radiant 2-1. The water-logged pitch from overnight showers looked like giving Bengaluru FC trouble, but two quick goals in a span of three minutes dispelled any such worries for coach Albert Roca. Bengaluru shot into the lead when Chhetri rolled

the ball perfectly across the face of the goal, leaving Segovia with the simple job of scoring past Abahani ‘keeper Sahidul Alam to make it 1-0. Chhetri then squirmed past two blue Abahani shirts to tee up Nishu who slammed the ball low to the corner and beyond Alam. The two early blows were enough to prompt Abahani into submission as Bengaluru hogged possession and began camping in the hosts’ final third. Chhetri then completed a hat-trick of assists when he chipped

over the Abahani defence for Nishu to fantastically control the ball on his chest before firing home from close to make it 3-0. The skipper finally got into the act on the hour mark when Alam spilled a cross that fell to Chhetri who scored his 24th goal of the season with a simple finish after holding off a defender. Meanwhile in Aizawl, where everyone who had anything to do with Bengaluru FC had their eyes on, Leonce Dodoz gave the hosts a 61st minute lead that Romanian Andrei Ionescu doubled in the 82nd minute. New Radiant needed three goals to keep their hopes of making the knockout stages alive and Ibrahim Hassan began the fight with an 85th minute strike. But Aizawl, with nothing to play for in Group E, clung on to the lead that sent the squad in Dhaka in raptures. A draw process that involves four zones -- Central Asia, South Asia, East Asia and Asean -- will determine Bengaluru’s next opponents. While three group winners have been decided, the final of the Asean Zone is yet to take place.

Italian Open: Halep, Sharapova win ROME, May 16 (Agencies): Needing a couple of wins this week to hold on to her No. 1 ranking, Simona Halep routed Naomi Osaka 6-1, 6-0 Wednesday in the second round of the Italian Open, while three-time winner Maria Sharapova needed a marathon three sets to get past Australian Ashleigh Barty. It was a sharp turnaround from when Osaka lost only three games against Halep in the Indian Wells semifinals in March _ when Osaka went on to win her first career title. Osaka wasted four break points and a chance to take a 2-0 lead in the first set, then lost 11 straight games. On Halep’s first match point, the 21st-ranked Osaka didn’t even make a move for Halep’s return of her second serve. Halep needs to reach at least the quarterfinals at the Foro Italico or risk losing the

top spot to Caroline Wozniacki. Defending champion Elina Svitolina also eased into the third round. Svitolina, the fourth seed, received a first round bye and dropped just three games in a dominant 6-1 6-2 victory over 35th-ranked Petra Martic on Tuesday. The 23-year-old Ukrainian won the biggest clay court title of her career last year at the Foro Italico. And she continued where she left off despite the rainy condi-

tions, needing just over an hour to peg back her Croatian rival. By contrast, Sharapova needed two and a half hours to master 18th-ranked Barty 7-5 3-6 6-2 in their first round match. Sharapova’s victory, her 34th on clay in the Italian capital, came in her first meeting with Barty, who was making her Rome debut. Sharapova next meets Dominika Cibulkova in the second round.

Buenos Aires, May 16 (IANS): FC Barcelona superstar and Argentina captain Lionel Messi has said that seeing his former Barca teammate Neymar end up with arch-rivals Real Madrid will be a “hard blow.” “It would be terrible because of what Ney means to Barcelona,” Messi told Argentina’s TyC Sports on Tuesday, reports Efe news agency. “Despite the way in which he left ... He won important titles here. It would be a hard blow for everyone, especially for all Barcelona supporters. He knows it. I’ve told him, we’ve talked about it.” Neymar, one of the attacking mainstays of the current Brazil squad, plays for French powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Last August, PSG paid Barcelona a record transfer fee of 222 million euros ($263 million) for Neymar, who reportedly started talking about leaving the French club after they were eliminated from the Champions League by Real Madrid.

Nepal teen spinner Lamichhane included in ICC World XI squad

Sandeep Lamichhane

DUBAI, May 16 (PTI): Nepal’s teenage spinner Sandeep Lamichhane continued his rapid rise in international cricket as he was named in the ICC World XI squad to take on the West Indies in a charity T20 International on May 31. However, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan has withdrawn from the game due to personal reasons, the ICC stated on Wednesday without specifying the exact cause of his pullout. The 17-year-old Lamichhane, who is mentored by former Australian captain Michael Clarke, is currently playing in the Indian Premier League for the Delhi Daredevils. The charity match will be played at the iconic Lord’s in London to raise funds for Caribbean stadia ravaged by

hurricanes last year. Lamichhane will join a star-studded line-up, which also comprises Eoin Morgan (captain), Shahid Afridi, Tamim Iqbal, Dinesh Karthik, Rashid Khan, Mitchell McClenaghan, Shoaib Malik, Hardik Pandya, Thisara Perera and Luke Ronchi against the ICC World T20 champion side. The West Indian squad includes the likes of Samuel Badree, Carlos Brathwaite, Chris Gayle, Evin Lewis, Marlon Samuels and Andre Russell among others. Lamichhane was spotted by then Nepal coach Pubudu Dassanayake in 2014 and first represented Nepal in the 2016 U-19 World Cup in which he took 16 wickets. In the historic MCC versus Nepal match at Lord’s in July the same year, Lamichhane had figures of one for 25 as the visitors successfully defended 217 for eight, bowling out the hosts for 176 in 47.2 overs. The wrist-spinner claimed 17 wickets in six World Cricket League Division Two matches in Namibia earlier this year in February and then followed up with 13 wickets in the World Cup Qualifier in March to help Nepal finish eighth and with it earn ODI status until 2022.
