NEW DELHI, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Supreme Court on Monday stayed a Gauhati High Court order directing a Nagaland government employee to surrender in a case of collecting “tax” on behalf of NSCN (K), a Deccan Herald report stated. The apex court also expressed concern over the menace of collection of tax going on in the North Eastern region for underground organisations. A bench of Justices L Nageswara Rao and Mohan M Shantanagoudar issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on a special leave petition filed by Kekhriesatuo Tep, superintendent of the Fisheries department. He challenged the Gauhati High Court order of May 8 directing him and others to surrender before the National Investigation Agency, Dimapur, within three weeks. Senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for the petitioner Tep, contended that the high court has not correctly appreciated the situation and overturned the special judge’s order to grant bail to the accused. After a brief hearing, the court sought a response from the NIA to the petition. On an appeal filed by the NIA, the high court had set aside the order of granting bail to Tep and others by the special judge on October 17. The high court has said that the trial court was not justified in passing its order, as the records revealed that they had been paying money to different “underground” organisations for which even receipts had been issued. In October 2017, NIA apprehended three senior state government officials including Tep and a retired official on charges of alleged extortions and illegal tax collections on behalf of the NSCN (K).

hunt for missing MH370

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 29 (IANS): Malaysia on Tuesday ended a four-year hunt for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 after searching more than 80,000 square kilometres without finding any traces of the aircraft. The plane disappeared on March 8, 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. For mer Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, who left office after losing the elections earlier this month, had signed a contract in January with the US company ‘Ocean Infinity’ to track the area of the Indian Ocean where experts believe the plane crashed. According to the agreement, Malaysia would have paid a reward of up to $70 million if the company had found the wreckage. But it found nothing and the

Malaysian government said it has no plans to begin any new searches after the deadline for the search expired on Tuesday. Grace Nathan, whose mother was on MH370, told the Guardian newspaper that she was opposed to ending the hunt. According to the official investigation, flight MH370 disappeared from the radar about 40 minutes after taking off from Kuala Lumpur, after someone turned off the communication systems and turned the aircraft around. So far, 27 fragments of the plane have been recovered at beaches in Reunion, Mozambique, Mauritius, South Africa and Pemba Island (Zanzibar), after they followed the currents of the Indian Ocean, according to the official hypothesis of the disaster.

DIMAPUR: Eastern Nagaland College Students’ Union (ENCSU) has expressed shock at the decision of authorities of Wangkhao College in Mon district to suspend honours in Education. Opposing the move, a press release issued by ENCSU president M Longre Chang and general secretary WangNei C Jessuhu regretted that instead of augmenting the institution’s overall facilities the college authorities was only suspending providing honours on Education that was started decades back. The duo pointed out that there were many students from poor background unable to afford to study at other places and hence dependent on Wangkhao College to take honours on the subject. The students’ body said it was shocked to learn that the college authorities had notified suspension of honours on Education in the ongoing academic session due to shortage of teachers in the institution’s Education department. The union said this was the first time in the history of Nagaland that an honours subject was suspended in the middle of an academic session. Expressing its sadness at the “manipulation by the government, ENCSU pointed out that the move would directly affect the student community. It further asked the State government and higher education department to clarify on what ground the college authorities issued the notification and why the government failed to appoint sufficient number

of lecturers at Wangkhao College. Alleging that the subject has been taken off as per the State government’s directive, the union wanted to know the reason for shortage of lecturers at the college in comparison to other colleges in Nagaland. It demanded that the government give an immediate clarification on the matter, if the latter issued any directive in this regard. ENCSU asked the State government and higher education department to look into the matter immediately before the students resume their classes. It also warned that if any problem arises with the students following the decision, then the government will be held solely responsible for it. The influential students’ body also urged the government to initiate action against those professors of Eastern Nagaland colleges who are attached to other colleges or the directorate. Re m i n d i n g t h a t a memorandum was submit-

ted to higher & technical education commissioner secretary by ENCSU seeking recall of such professors to their respective places of posting, the release alleged that the attached professors were drawing salaries from their posted institutions while working in other places. The release added that such a practice was harming affecting studies.

Warning politicians against involving themselves with professors or lecturers, ENCSU said the minister concerned and local MLAs should know the problems faced by students in their local areas. Finally, the union asked the government to immediately recall all attached professors to their respective places of posting in Eastern Nagaland.

Peace negotiator between Centre, ULFA missing: SC told New Delhi, May 29 (PTI): Rebati Phukan, who has been working as a mediator between the Centre and separatist outfit United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) since 1991 to facilitate a peace dialogue, has gone missing since April 22, the Supreme Court was informed Tuesday. Phukan’s son Kaushik Phukan has approached the top court saying his father has been missing since April 22 and quoted ULFA chief Paresh Baruah as saying that he may be in the custody of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) or the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) or Military Intelligence or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) as they “have a rivalry amongst them”. His son has filed a habeas corpus (a writ requiring a person under arrest to be brought before a court) petition before the Supreme Court. The plea which sought direction to the authorities, including Assam government, to produce Phukan before the court was mentioned before a bench comprising Justices L Nageswara Rao and Mohan M Shantanagoudar, which agreed to hear the matter on June 1. Senior advocate Geeta Luthra, who appeared for Kaushik, mentioned the matter before the bench and said that Rebati Phukan was a “peace negotiator” between the Centre and ULFA in Assam. The petitioner also urged the court that the case be transferred to CBI or any other independent agency or a special investigating team as there was “a loss of faith in the local police” due to its

Mukul calls NPPled Meghalaya govt ‘ad hoc’

Rebati Phukan alleged lethargic conduct. Kaushik has said in his plea that despite the registration of an FIR, no proactive steps have been taken till date by the police to trace his father, who was appointed as a member of the erstwhile People’s Consultative Group (PCG) formed by the ULFA in 2005 to mediate between the outfit and the Centre. “The petitioner’s father has also been working directly with the Prime Minister’s Office since 1991 for various peace missions between the Centre and ULFA to bring peace in Assam,” the plea said, adding that Rebati Phukan had also “worked in association and cooperated” with the IB till 2016 on various missions in India, Myanmar, Bangladesh and China. The plea said that after he went missing, Kaushik got to know from a highranking official of the IB that his father was closely associated with the intelligence body. It claimed they have come to know that on April 20, Rebati Phukan had attended a “secret meeting” with a retired bureaucrat and an advocate practising in the Assam High Court, during which a “proposal memorandum to negotiate with Paresh Baruah,

ULFA chief, was being discussed and the same was to be presented before Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi soon”. The petitioner has said that his father went for morning walk on April 22 but did not return to his rented house, after which the landlord called Kaushik about it and a complaint was filed at a police station in Guwahati. The plea said that on April 25, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had directed the Director General of Police to immediately conduct an inquiry in the matter and a special team was formed. The petitioner also claimed that on May 4, a CRPF doctor had messaged a journalist that Rebati Phukan was treated by him at a CRPF camp in Shillong and he was safe and sound. It referred to recent media reports in which ULFA chief Paresh Baruah had said that Rebati Phukan was negotiating a “fresh proposal for Baruah’s faction with the Centre with help from the interlocutor with the Naga outfit National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), R N Ravi”. “Baruah further made a statement stating that the petitioner’s father might be in custody of either Intelligence Bureau, Research and Analysis Wing, Military Intelligence or National Investigating Agency as they have a rivalry amongst them,” the plea said. It also said that Director General of Police of Assam should be directed to file a status report giving details of the result of investigation till date.

IMPHAL, May 29: Health services authority in Manipur Tuesday said no case of Nipah virus was detected in the state and that there was no need to get panicky. Irani takes a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s claim Correspondent

SHILLONG, MAY 29: Union Textiles Minister, Smriti Zubin Irani on Tuesday pooh-poohed the claims of Congress president, Rahul Gandhi that Congress will bounce back to power in 2019. “I do politics from the region where Congress president, Rahul Gandhi does politics. In Amethi, he has lost every Assembly and local elections in the last four years. A person who is not guaranteed to come back in his own constituency, what are his chances of coming back in the country,” she told journalists here in Meghalaya. “People in Amethi are not happy and he (Rahul Gandhi) is talking about development in different parts of the country. During the tenure of the BJP government, the Passport Office, the Chief Medical Officer’s office and the District Collector’s office, in Amethi was inaugurated, while the Congress did nothing for its own bastion. How can he (Rahul) talk about development in the country,” Irani added.

TURA, May 29 (Agencies): Meghalaya leader of the Opposition Mukul Sangma has termed the National People’s Party (NPP)-led government as an “ad hoc” one refusing to lay his cards on the table should his party win the Ampati seat and emerge as the single largest party. Sangma who has represented the seat six consecutive times says the timing was about right for him to step aside. “It’s the right time to pave the way for a new incumbent to serve the people who have stood firm behind me and the party. We look forward to a positive outcome,” Sangma said. Mukul had vacated the Ampati seat after he was elected from both here and Songsak. The Congress had chosen Mukul’s eldest daughter, Miani D. Shira, to contest. “It’s not the right time to put the cards on the table. Politics in Meghalaya is very different; it’s unlike other states and has seen lot of instability. Running a government in Meghalaya is not a matter of joke,” said Sangma, who is only the third chief minister in the hill state to complete a five-year term. Sangma also took a jibe at the current state gover nment, calling it “ad-hoc”. “It is an ad-hoc government as the chief minister is yet to get himself elected as a member of the house. He is still a member of parliament,” mocked Sangma.

by the current dispensation. “The BJP government in the centre was doing a lot for the development of the northeast. There is infrastructure thrust in the northeast and this push for the region is a reflection of Narendra Modi’s belief that the sun of development of a new India will rise from this region,” Irani said. A NITI forum for the northeast was formed recently and the first meeting was held on May 10. “Northeast is an area of prime focus as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given a clarion call for all round development of the region. A forum had been setup under the NITI Aayog to work for all round development and work out strategies for expansion and growth of the region,” the Union Minister said. Noting that “Congress right now is limiting itself only to rhetoric”, Irani said, “The BJP is coming with hard facts and number to the people. As a member of the BJP I don’t expect the opposition to be kind. But I will expect them to look at the facts before themselves.”

Noting that UPA government left behind a 48-year-old legacy of apathy, she said, “This is 48-year-old legacy of apathy of one family versus 48 months of good governance under (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi,” Irani said. “I would like to remind you that when we came to power and got the opportunity to serve people, the economic condition of the country was poor. The government had to address the financial challenges in every sector, especially pertaining to the scams and debts of the UPA rule,” she said. Evading a direct reply to queries on fuel price hike and black money recovery, Irani assured people that her colleagues in the government and party president Amit Shah would offer a “time-bound solution” soon. On Congress’ claims that the BJP-led NDA government in the centre was inaugurating projects in the northeast initiated by the UPA government, Irani pointed out that NITI Aayog, MUDRA loan and the Jandhan Yojana were project initiated

Poll facts

ith the re-polling at Kubza polling station 13 on May 30, the Lok Sabha bypoll for the lone seat for Nagaland will have probably polled around 75% at the most after all votes are counted on May 31. What is interesting about the Lok Sabha bypoll is that the voter turn out was way below the “standard mark” of 85%+. This may be because the people have gotten slightly tired of election since they had undergone a very short but furious campaigning and polling, all sandwiched between notification on January 31 and polling on February 27. In the past, though there was the usual 30-day gap, yet in 2018 the clamour for solution not election had caused much confusion. All political parties barring the BJP, were not inclined to participate in the elections as a show of their support for solution. Anyway, the people did vote in the assembly election when the ECI and the government of India refused to postpone a constitutional process for a solution that had still not been declared. The polling percentage of the 2018 Lok Sabha bypoll is not expected to reach the 80% mark after the re-polling in Kuzba polling station. Except for Lok Sabha elections, generally voting percentage in assembly elections in Nagaland has been on a steep rise since 1989 when the 84.69% mark was breached in 1993 to 90.34 %. The polling percentage in various assembly elections are usually above 85% and in some cases, as high as 98. 88% as in 1998. Strangely, in 1998 there was a poll boycott call by various organisations in favour of solution but in which only some independent candidates and the Congress party contested. This was mainly since the number of electors drastically came down and the majority voted for Congress whose candidates were virtually unopposed. The voter participation in assembly elections are indicative of the people’s faith in parliamentary democracy. However, it is to be also accepted, that the over zealousness among people to vote cannot explain how the figure has continually been maintained at well over 80% in all elections. Perhaps one of the contributing factors to the high percentage is due mainly to proxy voting or voter impersonation or fraud. This is one issue that needs to be tackled by the Election authorities. It is a matter of concern that voter impersonation can still take place despite the rules which require that a person submit either a EPIC, driving license or ID issued by a government authority. There is need to look at the lacuna of the present system. In Nagaland, EVM cannot be blamed for high turn out. It is the blatantly open practice of booth capturing and proxy voting that are to be blamed. Booth can be captured towards late afternoon or evening when polling stations are virtually without people queuing up to vote. This is when bogus voters rush in and vote as many times. Often this is with the knowledge of polling officers and the polling agents. In fact this is an unwritten understanding that has become the mainstay of elections. Everyone knows this and even rivals accept this practise. It is time that the state authorities take a serious look into this issue and bring out urgent measures to discourage the malpractice once and for all.

DailyDevotion Untroubled Relationship In that day you will ask in My name…for the Father Himself loves you… —John 16:26-27 “In that day you will ask in My name…,” that is, in My nature. Not “You will use My name as some magic word,” but— “You will be so intimate with Me that you will be one with Me.” “That day” is not a day in the next life, but a day meant for here and now. “…for the Father Himself loves you…”— the Father’s love is evidence that our union with Jesus is complete and absolute. Our Lord does not mean that our lives will be free from external difficulties and uncertainties, but that just as He knew the Father’s heart and mind, we too can be lifted by Him into heavenly places through the baptism of the Holy Spirit, so that He can reveal the teachings of God to us. “…whatever you ask the Father in My name…” (John 16:23). “That day” is a day of peace and an untroubled relationship between God and His saint. Just as Jesus stood unblemished and pure in the presence of His Father, we too by the mighty power and effectiveness of the baptism of the Holy Spirit can be lifted into that relationship— “…that they may be one just as We are one…” (John 17:22). “…He will give you” (John 16:23). Jesus said that because of His name God will recognize and respond to our prayers. What a great challenge and invitation— to pray in His name! Through the resurrection and ascension power of Jesus, and through the Holy Spirit He has sent, we can be lifted into such a relationship. Once in that wonderful position, having been placed there by Jesus Christ, we can pray to God in Jesus’ name— in His nature. This is a gift granted to us through the Holy Spirit, and Jesus said, “…whatever you ask the Father in My name He will give you.” The sovereign character of Jesus Christ is tested and proved by His own statements.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur WEDNESDAY, MAY 30, 2018

H

owever justified Delhi’s Archbishop Anil Joseph Thomas Cuoto may be in calling fellow Catholic Christians to pray for a change of government at the Centre, he is guilty of committing a grave mistake of mixing religion with politics. In a pastoral letter, he has asked fellow priests to pray and fast for the change in 2019 elections, arguing that India faces a turbulent political future which threatens the country’s democratic polity. Today, when India as a nation faces attacks from fascist and parochial organizations, it is incumbent upon the religious heads to speak out. Some may not consider it good for India’s health. If religious heads of different communities jump into the political arena, they no longer remain distant from politics as they should. The main criticism against Prime Minister Narendra Modi is that he wears the badge of Hindu chauvinism on his sleeves. He has divided the people to an extent that was never before. So much so, several Christian leaders have accused the Bhrtiya Janata

Challenge to India’s pluralism Party government of tacitly supporting the groups that are working for establishing a Hindu rashtriya, ignoring the interest of other religious and ethnic minorities. They allege that attacks against Christians have increased after Modi came to power. There were as many as 736 attacks recorded against Christians in 2017 against 348 in 2016, as per an ecumenical forum that records Christian persecution in India and helps victims. “We are witnessing a turbulent political atmosphere which poses a threat to the democratic principles enshrined in our constitution and the secular fabric of our nation. So writes the Christian protector. It is our hallowed practice to pray for the country and its political leaders, but all the more so when we approach general elections. The pastoral letter carried a special prayer composed for the nation protection. It also asked parishes, religious houses and Catholic institutions to organize Eucharistic adoration every Friday and recite the prayer for the nation.

The prayer read: Let the ethos of true democracy envelop our elections and flames of honest patriotism rekindle our political leaders in these troubled times as we see clouds eclipsing the light of truth, justice and freedom.” The move by the Delhi Archbishop has been welcomed by India’s Catholic and Christian leaders. Perhaps, other minorities Kuldip may use this as an opportunity to ventilate their grievances. The Muslim leaders, particularly, may challenge India’s constitutional credentials. Already Asaduddin Owaisi, a Lok Sabha member from Hyderabad, speaks like the Muslim League leaders of pre-partition days. He probably believes that parochial politics will give him a countrywide importance as well as renew the atmosphere of confrontation between the Hindus and the Muslims. During my recent visit to Aligarh, I found the Muslim University living in the same make-believe world. They have not realised that there is no ummah other than India. A

few years ago, there was an international conference at AMU to revisit and rethink traditional solutions. The focus was to chart out a future course of action for Islamic unity. The outcome of the two-day conference brought out an interesting summary of how Muslims saw themselves then and how they would like to be seen in the future. One of the speakers from Egypt Nayar wanted all the sects under one umbrella and presented a unified Islam to the world. The answer to counter Hindu chauvinism is not Muslim chauvinism or, for that matter, Christian chauvinism. One prays that the Archbishop’s effort to bring about a change at the Centre would depend on his equation with the Hindus, who constitute 80 percent of the Indian population, not any particular community. He has given an opportunity to the country to discuss how far India has slipped away from its objective of being secular, the ethos of national freedom movement. The Archbishop should not be seen as a person who

has reignited the fire of communal divide. Nor is it his purpose. The scenario is similar to what happened during Pope’s visit to Mexico before the recent elections in the US. During his visit, the Pope gave the first-ever Catholic mass that straddled the border between two countries. About two lakh people watched from the Mexican side of the border, and around 50,000 from the US. The visit provided the most iconic visual from his trip. It was also overtly political, directly aimed at influencing American politics. In fact, the United States was in the process of choosing its next President. I recall immigration was right at the heart of that debate. If there was any doubt that the Pope wanted to affect America’s election by praying with immigrants on the USMexico border, he put it to rest on his trip back home. The presidential candidate Donald Trump was categorical about his immigration policy when he said: “If elected, I would build a 2,500-kilometerlong wall along the border.”

He wanted to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. The Pope’s remark was equally caustic. He replied: “A person, who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian!” However, the Pope later said that he would not advise whether to vote or not to vote. “I am not going to get involved in that. I would only say that this man (Trump) is not Christian if he has said things like that.” But the Pope had made it clear what he thought of Trump and his policies. He had clearly tried to influence the presidential race. In fact, the Pope had called himself a “political animal.” In 2013, he had even gone on record as saying that a good Catholic meddled in politics. He viewed it as part of his religious duty. Perhaps the Delhi Archbishop has torn a leaf from the Pope’s book. But unfortunately this is not what India needs to strengthen its secular polity. The RSS may try to emulate the extremists and push its agenda of Hindu Rashtra in India.

Modi government celebrates 4th anniversary with unfulfilled promises

he country is moving to the 5th year of BJP- led NDA government with Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its leader. On the 26th of May 2018, Modi addressed the rally to mark the anniversary of his government and also to prepare for the Lok Sabha election next year. Certainly the government had done lots of development for the country in terms of Games (hosted the under 19 FIFA 2017), fighting against corruption, bringing back black money by changing the highest currency notes such as 500 and 1000, yet in reality these initiatives or agenda of the government has caused lot of chaos to the poor people and not to the rich. The act of changing the highest currency notes brought lots of difficulties to the poor people especially the illiterate coming from far villages. The government is fighting against corruption yet day by day it continues in the society such as nepotism in appointment of government jobs, capable candidates are not getting the jobs for they need certain amount of money to pay to the people concerned and so on. Therefore, is India free from corruption under Modi’s government?

Of course am not writing this article in favour of any political party because corruption was also very high during the UPA government. However, I just want to remind the government based on the speech given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Cuttack where he said that the country is moving towards ‘susashan’ (good governance) from ‘kusashan’ (bad governance) and towards ‘jandhan’ (public money) from ‘kaladhan’ (black money), this speech of Prime Minister is still in the air and not in reality as his government completing four years of ruling India (NP May 27, 2018) Good governance with GST launched on July 1st last year had increase the prices of many commodities in the market and the poor people are suffering, the initiative of the government in bringing back black money has no effect on the rich instead the poor people are badly affected due to demonetization. Hence, does the government realize this ground reality as they execute their agenda? The promise of ‘acche din’ has not been fulfilled even in its four years of ruling. In fact, when asked about ‘acche din’, Amit Shah, The

president of BJP said that the government has successfully improve the lives of 22 crore families, economy has recovered, nation’s border is secured and the condition of women is improved (The Telegraph May 27, 2018). On the other hand, nothing much is improved in the society, poor people continue to suffer, economy with GST increases the commodities in the market, women and minor girls are raped and murdered as reported by the news, therefore, is the statement spoken by the BJP president true to reality? The promise of creating more jobs is again in the air and many people are jobless and unemployed. Now and then, news report of farmers committing suicide in different parts of India because of crops’ failure and no fund received from the government. Thus, is the country moving towards good governance? As I read the newspaper and watch news in different TV channels I found that the government had done lots of harm to the common people in executing their agenda and in the last four years. Interestingly, Modi’s government celebrates its fourth anniversary with fuel price hike as reported by the news in these last few

days. I do not know why the government is silent in this issue; instead it is busy blowing up their own trumpet on their fourth year of anniversary. Remember if fuel price is high the cost of the commodities too will be high and the poor people will be suffering. Thus, is the government working for the poor or the rich? If the price of fuel is high the government must take necessary steps to solve this problem, or else they cannot claim that they are successfully improve the lives of the 22 crore families as Amit Shah said in the fourth anniversary of the NDA government. As a result, the government has many promises to be accomplished with one year more before the next election in 2019. The agenda of the past four years like demonetization, GST, and Swatch Bharat has brought lots of chaos and difficulties to the people while the idea of swatch Bharat shows no sign of improvement if we look at the cleanliness of our towns, cities and villages. Hence, the government celebrates its fourth anniversary with many unfulfilled promises. Aiborlang Nongsiej, Bosco B.Ed College, Dimapur

AR deliberate attempt to derail the peace process

T

olerance of Naga Army, while honouring the peace initiative in search of solution and peace between the Naga People and the Union of India, when tested to the extreme, could result in negative impacts to the common quest for a solution. India’s unconventional military actions perpetuated on the Naga people whose unrelenting resistance are a matter of voluminous book, full of human rights violations, custodial death, summary execution, mass rape and the Nagas being used as human shields while conducting their undeclared war even after a ceasefire declaration and well established ground rules in place. Sincere appeals of the NSCN leadership to the Indian appropriate authority is to shun deliberate and defiant crossing of limits under the eye of the Agreed Ground Rules. This indicates that there is bankruptcy of political will, even though committed to resolve a conflict that has unfairly cost both the Gol and the Naga people further, the Home Ministry should not undermine the realization of the successive Indian Prime Ministers and Army Chiefs that Indo-Naga conflict

is not a law and order problem but a political problem. The recent conduct of 23rd Assam Rifles under the command of V.J. Mishra, using the native as human shields to raid the NSCN Camp stationed in Rongmei village, Tazeikaiphun on the 24th May 2018 was nothing but a repetition of Assam Rifles several records of the despicable actions of the Indian military act of cowardice while manoeuvring for their next rank. To those promotion-driven Assam Rifles personnel, it is reminded that NSCN cadres are respecting the hard earned peace talk, but the repetitive unconventional art of hunting the Naga Army could severely create repercussion that may ultimately distract even if the dialogue is going on in Delhi. In a similar incident wherein Sgt. Pangang Gangsa, S/Bn, Naga Army, was arrested right in front of his wife Ngamnoi Gangsa a resident of Wakkah village, Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh on 25/05/2018 who was brutally murdered by the 6th Assam Rifles. AR’s framed story of encountering and gun battle can never blanket the distorted action they have

committed. The bullet ridden body of Sgt. Pangang Gangsa inevitably bored the testimony of Assam Rifles customary brutality and cowardice. The thumb of the Naga Army was yet to dry, showcasing for signature under duress in order that the Assam Rifles could write their design tale in a blank paper later. It is no longer the matter of mere condemnation in printed media that it is time to act. This message should be relayed to the Indian authority that the Naga Army shall not be held accountable should the peace initiative be seriously disrupt out of any action suitably replied against the Assam Rifles’ constant provocative actions. NSCN/GPRN mourns and salutes the national martyr for rendering a selfless national service. His name is listed in the Naga National Martyrs record never to be forgotten. A deep condolence is conveyed to the bereaved family who are left behind. It is our conviction that Almighty God will bring solace and find contentment in giving ‘glory to the noble sacrifice’. A true Christian

t is not difficult to become a Christian and neither should it be difficult. But, can we verbally express that all “Christians” will inherit the kingdom of heaven? Just because we go to church does not make us a True Christian. In the present age, individuals go to church merely to gain the favours of earthly blessings from God, overlooking the fact that the Christian life is to gain magnificent heavenly abode at the cessation of our life. The vast majority goes to Church essentially to pick up their political/social life, or to flaunt their external magnificence, to avert chastising from guardians or to optically canvass people what they are wearing and vice versa. The very things that Christ warned us not to become are the exact same things we have become today. I believe one of the biggest reasons for this today is an ignorance of our own faith. Believers aren’t getting into the Word, and it is reflected in society. Our society today has become contaminated with despise, Injustice, defilement, killings, burglary, and so on. This ignorance of our faith has led to a religion of mixed up morals and hypocrites, and has largely contributed to all the evils in our society. How can we do away with all these evils? What does it mean to truly be a Christian? We must allow God to lead us and shape our lives to fit His. This requires one to be daily seeking and engaging with God in prayer and in His Word. It is through the power of the Holy Spirit and the truth of the Bible that lives are changed. Our actions and choices are largely shaped by what we believe in and value. By allowing the Bible to shape them, a spiritual maturity will begin to flourish within the heart of a believer. By rooting oneself in God’s Word and engaging society with a life of love, we can change the world. A true Christian, then, must internalize God’s law so that it becomes part of his thinking and identity, the very fabric of his being. For that to happen, we must be filled with, and led by God’s Holy Spirit. We are to “grow in grace and in knowledge.” The true Christian life is one of overcoming and growing to become more like Jesus Christ even in our innermost thoughts and desires. Sir,

Let’s restore behavioural qualities

With the passage of time, most Nagas are losing character or behavioural qualities like discipline, politeness, generosity, sincerity, hospitality, volunteering, mercy etc that was handed down to us by our forefathers. On retrospection, during the last few decades, when there was no education, our grandfathers and grandmothers had possessed more qualities of character than the present generation do. Today, most Nagas are forgetting that practice by taking a U-turn which was not practiced by our ancestors. With the advent of education and technologies, our ancestors would have been expecting us to possess more qualities in every way. But on the contrary, we tend to even forget the very spelling of ‘Shame’, ‘Disgrace’ etc, with our high standard Education. To restore all these qualities, it should not only start from leaders, officers or politicians but it starts from within me and you. Let us revitalise the good things handed down from our ancestors. Kathua rape accused to be produced before Pathankot court tomorrow

Jammu, May 29 (PTI): The eight people accused in the case of the rape and murder of an eightyear-old girl from a minority nomadic community in Kathua will be produced before a court in Pathankot in Punjab on May 31 in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court, officials said today. The Jammu and Kashmir’s elite Crime Branch will produce the charge sheet in the case as well as all the accused in the case before the district and sessions judge in Pathankot. Officials said a police team along with the staff of Kathua’s district and sessions judge will present all the files to the court in Pathankot, 30 km from Kathua, and request permission to translate all the documents from Urdu to English. Citing security concerns in transporting the accused to court, the public prosecutor will move a plea to keep them in judicial custody in Pathankot, the officials said. After several petitions

Supreme Court had earlier transferred the Kathua rape and murder case to Pathankot from Jammu..

in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court as well as the Supreme Court, the case is finally set to move to the trial stage with the apex court directing the district and sessions judge in Pathankot to hold an incamera hearing. “The lear ned district and sessions judge, Pathankot, shall himself take up the trial and not assign it to any additional sessions judge and shall

fast-track the trial and take it up on day-to-day basis so that there is no delay in trial,” the three-judge bench of the Supreme Court order had said earlier this month. The Crime Branch had submitted a charge sheet in the crime on April 9 before the Kathua court. The case came into the national limelight after lawyers of the Kathua bar association tried to prevent

the police from filing the documents. According to the charge sheet, the eightyear-old girl, who was kidnapped on January 10 this year, was allegedly raped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district after having been kept sedated for four days before she was bludgeoned to death. The abduction, rape and killing of the child was

part of a carefully planned strategy to remove the minority nomadic community from the area, the 15-page charge sheet says. It names eight people, including temple custodian and alleged mastermind Sanji Ram, his son Vishal, a juvenile nephew and special police officers Deepak Khajuria alias ‘Deepu’ and Surender Verma. The others arrested in the case are the juvenile’s friend Parvesh Kumar alias Mannu as well as investigating officers head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta, who allegedly took Rs 4 lakh from Ram and destroyed crucial evidence. The case became a bone of contention between the state government’s alliance partners PDP and BJP. The saffron party had to sack two of its ministers Chowdhury Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga for participating in a rally of ‘Hindu Ekta Manch’ in support of the accused arrested by the Crime Branch.

Odisha IAS body accuses Pradhan of targeting officers Bhubaneswar, May 29 (IANS): Odisha IAS Officers Association on Tuesday accused Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan of personally targeting a senior officer during the inauguration of the National Data Centre of NIC. The association submitted a memorandum submitted to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, demanding that the matter be taken up at the “appropriate level” to avoid a repeat of such

incidents. The IAS body alleged that Pradhan in his speech during the inaugural ceremony of NIC’s Data Centre here on Monday had targeted state IT Secretary Ashok Meena, but did not mention what exactly the Minister had said. It said that recent episodes in the state and other parts of the country wherein officers, while discharging their professional duties, have been personally at-

tacked by senior members of political executive was a direct attempt to defy constitutional values. “A case in point is the incident which took place yesterday, i.e. May 28, 2018 at the inauguration of the National Data Centre of NIC, Bhubaneswar, wherein the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas personally targeted a senior IAS officer of the state government, who was attending the function

on invitation,” the memorandum said. The IAS Officers’ body also alleged that several such incidents have also been reported by the field functionaries and this has vitiated the working atmosphere with a demoralising effect on the officers and employees of the state government. It said that it strongly condemns such incidents and stands by all the state government employees facing such situations.

The Commission has observed that its instant direction in the matter is independent of the directions already given by it to the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu after taking suo motu cognizance of the incident on the basis of media reports. They have been asked to submit detailed reports in the matter along with status of the treatment being provided to the persons who were injured in police firing within two weeks.

Similar talks were held between the two countries on April 27.

a two-week high yesterday. The Indian currency was given some reprieve after plunging to a fresh 18-month low of 68.42 last week, staging an impressive recovery fuelled by a sudden crash in global crude prices. It had appreciated by a whopping 1.47 per cent in the last three trading sessions. Similarly, fresh bouts of selling was seen on bond market with the benchmark 10-year yield rising to 7.76

per cent from 7.74 per cent. Sliding crude prices is not helping rupee at this point of time unnerved by a wave of political uncertainty not only in Italy but also in Spain, a forex dealer commented. Strong demand for the greenback from oil companies and gold traders to meet their import demand also weighed on trade, he added. The rupee resumed with a sharp gap-down at 67.62 from overnight close of 67.43 at the inter-bank foreign exchange (forex) market. It remained under immense pressure throughout the day and touched a fresh intra-day low of 68 in midafternoon deals before ending at 67.86, showing a steep loss of 43 paise, or 0.64 per cent. The RBI, meanwhile, fixed the reference rate for the dollar at 67.8201 and for the euro at 78.6984.

recoveries from India’s new bankruptcy process, which reported its first big success this month but is running behind schedule amid multiple legal and logistical challenges. Shares of Bank of India, which became the latest to report the divergence, slumped 4.4 per cent as of 1 pm on Tuesday. Loss tripled to Rs 3,970 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2018, from Rs 1,050 crore a year earlier, the lender told the stock exchange late on Monday.

Mumbai, May 29 (PTI): After a short-lived recovery, the rupee Tuesday once again turned shaky and lost ground against the US currency, falling by a steep 43 paise to end at 67.86 due to heavy month-end dollar demand from importers. Forex market sentiment turned bearish after tracking losses in most Asian and emerging market currencies, also impacted by political developments in Italy. Deepening political crisis in Italy, the euro zone’s third biggest economy, provoked selling of Italian assets and the euro that was reminiscent of the euro zone debt crisis of 2010-2012. A sharp sell-off in domestic stock market also largely led to weaker rupee sentiment. However, suspected currency market intervention by the Reserve Bank of India stemmed the rupee’s fall. The rupee had touched

NEW DELHI, May 29 (Agencies): Bad loans at India’s five biggest staterun banks have come at about Rs 47,000 crore more than the lenders had assessed. Audits by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for the year ended March 31, 2017, revealed the discrepancies, triggering large losses as the banks increased provisions. On adding Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) Bank, which doesn’t feature among the biggest but got the largest chunk of a public bailout, the figure rises to about more than Rs 56,000 crore. Mudra has created opportunities for self-employment and is acting as job-multiplier, Modi said, adding that as many as 12 crore received Rs 6 lakh crore in loans under the scheme. “Out of the 12 crore beneficiaries, 28 per cent or 3.25 crore are first-time entrepreneurs,” he said in his interaction with beneficiaries of this scheme. He also said 74 per cent, or 9 crore, borrowers are women and 55 per cent belong to the SC/ST and OBC category. “Mudra Yojana is not just a self employment scheme but it acts as job multiplier as it has created jobs as several new ventures got started,” Modi said. Recalling the days of Licence Raj, Modi said, earlier loans were provided to rich people on the recommendations of high and mighty, and poor people without connections were left out of the formal credit system.

were organised with great fanfare, loans were provided to selected persons and no one bothered about their repayment. “Do you know 25-30 years ago there used to be loan melas for political benefit and people who were close to politicians used to gets loans with no intension of returning them. There used to be great fan fare but no one bothered to find the end results,” he said. The NDA government did not organise any loan melas or gave space to intermediaries. It trusted the country’s youth and women to get loans directly from the banks and start their own small business, the Prime Minister said. “We trusted small businesses, we trusted business skills of first time entrepreneurs and loans were given under the Mudra Yojana for setting up their own venture,” Modi said. The government developed the new product ‘Mudra’ with a view to provide opportunity to poor people and small businesses to obtain loans from banks without any collateral to

stay the NCLT order, which has directed to start insolvency proceedings against it over the Ericsson plea. During the proceedings, Sibal said that RCom has a total debt of around Rs 46,000 crore. He further added that RIL’s Jio, which is buying RCom’s assets, has offered Rs 17,000 crore of upfront payment along with spectrum dues and transfer of debts. On May 15, the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) had admitted an insolvency petition filed by Ericsson against Reliance Communications and two of its subsidiaries seeking to recover unpaid dues. Ericsson, which had signed a 7-year deal in 2014 to operate and manage RCom’s nationwide telecom network, had alleged that it had not been paid the dues. Last September, the Swedish company had filed a petition in the NCLT’s Mumbai bench seeking liquidation of the telecom operator to recover Rs 1,150 crore that RCom allegedly owes it.

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said that loans worth Rs 6 lakh crore have been given to 12 crore beneficiaries under the Mudra scheme as he accused the previous governments of tokenism and not enough for small businesses. Unlike the loan melas organised by previous governments, he said that the Pradhan Manrti Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has helped and encouraged people to tread the unconventional path, fulfil their dreams and generate jobs for others by setting up small businesses. PMMY was launched by the Prime Minister on April 8, 2015, for providing loans of up to Rs 10 lakh to the non-corporate, non-farm small/micro enterprises. Last fiscal, the government extended Rs 2.53 lakh crore credit under the Mudra Yojana, while Rs 5.73 lakh crore has been extended in last 3 years. Interacting with Mudra beneficiaries from across the country through a video conference, the Prime Minister said that under the loan melas, which

During the proceedings of the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal ( NCLAT), senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for RCom, suggested an upfront payment. To this, the NCLAT bench headed by Chairman Justice S J Mukhopadhaya suggested settlement between parties. “You know the fate of operational creditors (In corporate resolution process). You may not even 5 per cent. Three dead in suspected ‘terror’ shooting in Belgium

Police officers speak with parents of children at a high school in the eastern Belgian city of Liege on Tuesday.

L I E G E ( B E LG I U M ) , MAY 29 (AGENCIES): A gunman on Tuesday shot dead two female police officers with their own weapons before killing a bystander in a brazen suspected terror attack in Belgium, briefly taking a hostage at a school before being killed by police, reports AFP. The carnage in the gritty eastern industrial city of Liege began around 10:30 am (0830 GMT) when the attacker armed with a knife repeatedly stabbed the two officers before using their own firearms to kill them, prosecutors said. Federal prosecutors said they had launched a terror investigation into the incident, which comes as Belgium remains on high

alert after a string of attacks including twin suicide bombings in Brussels in 2016 claimed by the Islamic State group. “Armed with a knife, the suspect followed and attacked two police officers, and used their own firearms to kill them,” prosecutor Philippe Dulieu told a news conference. “He continued on foot, attacking a parked vehicle where he opened fire on a 22-year-old man in the passenger seat. The young man died. “He then continued and entered the Leonie de Waha school. He took a woman working there as hostage. Police intervened, he came out firing on the police officers, wounding sev-

eral before he was killed.” Eric Van Der Sypt, spokesman for the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office, told AFP there were “elements that point in the direction that this is a terrorist act”, while police confirmed that both officers killed in the attack were women. According to Belgian broadcaster RTBF, the shooter was released from prison on Monday and was only known for minor infractions with no known links to extremism. Liege, a major city in Belgium’s former industrial heartland, was the scene of another bloody shootout in 2011 when a former convict armed with grenades and an automatic rifle killed six people and wounded more than 120. Prime Minister Charles Michel denounced what he called “cowardly and blind violence”. “All our support for the victims and their loved ones. We are following the situation with the security services and the crisis centre,” Michel tweeted. There was support from other European countries, with French President Emmanuel Macron condemning the incident as a “terrible attack” and expressing the

“solidarity of the French people”. British Prime Minister Theresa May said the UK “stands resolute with our Belgian allies against terror”. Belgian Interior Minister Jan Jambon said Belgium’s Federal Crisis Centre was monitoring the situation. “Our thoughts are with the victims of this horrible act. We are in the process of establishing an overview of exactly what happened,” Jambon wrote on Twitter. A major security cordon was set up around the area, while panicked parents came to collect their children from the school complex. The governor of Liege province said all the children and staff were safe and unhurt. “All the children are fine, those of the primary and kindergarten saw nothing, they were evacuated through the back of the school,” Julie Fernandez, mother of a 7-year-old child at the school, told AFP. “They were cared for by staff and psychologists and high school students were cared for in a nearby park,” added Fernandez, who is also an MP.

Misleading tweets by liberal activists fuel Donald Trump WASHINGTON, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): President Donald Trump on Tuesday seized on an error by liberal activists who tweeted photos of young-looking immigrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in steel cages and blamed the current administration for separating immigrant children from their parents, reports AP. The photos were taken by The Associated Press in 2014, when President Barack Obama was in office. The photo captions reference children who crossed the border as unaccompanied minors. Early Tuesday, Trump tweeted: “Democrats mistakenly tweet 2014 pictures from Obama’s term showing children from the Border in steel cages. They thought it was recent pictures in order to make us look bad, but backfires. Dems must agree to Wall and new Border Protection for good of country... Bipartisan Bill!” The immigration debate has reached a fever pitch in recent months following reports that since October about 700 children crossing the U.S.-Mexico border have been separated from their parents. The number of separated minors is expected to jump once Trump’s new “zero tolerance” policy is enacted.

Trump confirms NKorean official headed to NY

In this image made from video, Kim Yong Chol, Kim Jong Un’s top official on inter-Korean relations, walks through Beijing airport after his arrival May 29, 2018.

North Korea, heading now Kim Yong Chol, vice to New York. Solid response chairman of the ruling to my letter, thank you!” Workers’ Party’s Central

Committee, was scheduled to fly to the United States on Wednesday after speaking to Chinese officials in Beijing, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency said, citing an unidentified source. The talks indicate that planning for the unprecedented summit on curbing Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons program, initially scheduled for June 12, is moving ahead after Trump called it off last week in a letter to the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un. A day later, Trump said he had reconsidered and officials from both countries

were meeting to work out details. Kim Yong Chol will be the most senior North Korean official to meet top officials for talks in the United States since Jo Myong Rok, a marshal, met thenPresident Bill Clinton at the White House in 2000. Kim Yong Chol, previously chief of the Reconnaissance General Bureau, a top North Korean military intelligence agency, coordinated the North Korean president’s two meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in April and May.

Germany, Turkey mark 25th anniversary of racist attack

Angela Merkel talks with Mevlude Genc in Duesseldorf, western Germany May 29, 2018.

DUESSELDORF (GERMANY), MAY 29 (AGENCIES): German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Tuesday that right-wing populist rhetoric can lead to violent attacks, as she and Turkey’s foreign minister marked the 25th anniversary of a firebombing by extremists that killed five Turks and shocked the country at the time, reports AP. The firebombing in Solingen, north of Cologne, on May 29, 1993, was the deadliest in a series of racist attacks that raised international concerns following German unification in 1990. Two Turkish women and three girls died when fire raged through their building, and more than a dozen other family members were severely injured. Saying that Germany has a special responsibility to combat racism because

103 dead in B’desh anti-drugs campaign DHAKA, MAY 29 (IANS): Number of people killed in the last two weeks during anti-drug operations in Bangladesh climbed to over 103 on Tuesday, after another 10 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, police said. The 10 deaths occurred in seven districts after the police responded to firing by drug-traffickers or in clashes between the two, police officials told Efe news. On May 3, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the anti-drug campaign, that was initially carried out by the Rapid Action Battalion, an elite police force.

of its Nazi past, Merkel suggested — without mentioning names — that inflammatory tweets and statements like those from the nationalist Alternative for Germany party and other right-wing populists could have grave consequences. “Too often the limits of freedom of speech are being tested very calculatedly, and taboos are being broken and carelessly employed as political instruments,” she said. “But this isn’t just chit-chat. We’re playing with fire — those who with their words sow the seeds of violence must at least be aware violence will come to harvest.” Germany let in more than 1 million migrants in 2015-16, which gave rise to fears from some about the country’s ability to deal with the influx and helped the AfD win seats in parliament

for the first time in the 2017 election. Merkel was joined for the commemoration by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu at the state governor’s office in Duesseldorf along with 75-year-old Mevlude Genc, who lost two daughters, two granddaughters and a niece in the blaze. “The firebombing on your home in Solingen shocked our entire country ... it was not an isolated act, but the appalling low point in a long series of inhuman, far right crimes at the beginning of the 1990s,” Merkel said. Still today, she said, “people in our country are being demonized and attacked because they are asylum-seekers or refugees, or because they look like them because of their skin color and it doesn’t matter how long they have lived here.” After the 1993 firebombing, fears ran high in the country’s large Turkish community, and protesters, among them many German-Turkish youths, put up barricades and fought street battles with police in Solingen. It was the victims’ mother and grandmother, Mevlude Genc, who appealed to everyone in the country, Turks and Germans alike, to overcome the hatred and reach out to each other.

Centre to set up study centre on Brahmaputra river

Hunger strike against Citizenship NEHUTA pushes for fulfilment of demands Amendment Bill in Guwahati

New Delhi, May 29 (PTI): The government announced Tuesday that a Brahmaputra Study Centre would be set up at Gauhati University at a cost of Rs 28 crore to conduct research on the causes of and how to prevent frequent floods in the river. Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jitendra Singh said the Brahmaputra was one of the largest rivers in the world and the study centre would offer an opportunity for research in different aspects of the river in hydrology, waterways, environment, disaster, flood management, hydro-power production, etc. The government has approved setting up of an exclusive Brahmaputra Study Centre at Gauhati University in Guwahati for which a fund of about Rs 28 crore will be provided by the DoNER Ministry, Singh said. Vice-Chancellor of the university, Mridul Hazarika, who called on the minister, said the university had decided to provide land within the campus for a separate block for the study centre. Singh said Gauhati University was one of the oldest universities in the country and it needed to cultivate a unique identity for itself which could attract scholars from far and wide by setting up the study centre. Describing it as a “one stop destination” for all issues and problems that might emerge from time to time with respect to the Brahmaputra river system, Singh said the first major study at the centre had already been initiated.

Guwahati, May 29 (Agencies): The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and 28 organisations representing various ethnic groups of Assam staged 11-hour mass hunger strike on Tuesday in protest against the BJP-led Central Government’s move to grant Indian citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis by implementing the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) playground, Chandmari in Guwahati. The protest was also joined by a large number of people including representatives of various other organisations, political parties, intellectuals, artistes, former rebels, journalists, writers and others. The protest, which started at 6 am, continued till 5 pm. The protestors demanded constitutional safeguard to the indigenous people of Assam on the basis of the Assam Accord, implementation of the Assam Accord, withdrawal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, sealing of the India-Bangladesh border and signing of a bilateral agreement between

India and Bangladesh for deportation of illegal Bangladeshis. Talking to Northeast Now, AASU chief advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya warned the Central Government not to dump Bangladeshis in Assam and said, “Assam is not a dustbin to dump Bangladeshis.” The AASU chief advisor also said that the AASU along with 28 other organisations representing various ethnic groups would continue protest against the Bill until the Centre withdraws it. “The Central Government should know that there is a region called Northeast beyond Kolkata which is also a part of the country. We won’t tolerate discrimination with us anymore,” Bhattacharya said. Dr Bhattacharya urged the BJP-led Assam Government to take bold steps and voice against the Bill for the greater interest of the indigenous people of the State. Reacting to a question on announcement of Ram temples to be built by Ram Sena, Asom, a lesser-known right-wing organisation, in minority-dominated areas in the State, the AASU chief advisor said, “There is no place for communalism, extremism and illegal Bangladeshis in Assam.” Demanding scrapping of the Bill, All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) president Pramod Boro, who also joined the protest said, “The Bill would pose a serious threat to the ethnic groups of the State. The illegal migrants have already made a big impact on the socio-economic and political aspects of lives in the State.” Urging the Government to provide constitutional safeguards to the ethnic groups, languages and cultures of the State, the ABSU president further said, “The Bill, if passed by the Centre, would diminish the identity of various ethnic groups.”

Postal services in villages hit as staff continue stir

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): Postal services in rural areas across the country remained affected as the strike by Gramin Dak Sevaks entered the eighth day on Tuesday. The countrywide strike started on May 22 against the non-implementation of the 7th Pay Commission’s recommendations. A section of protesters are aligned with the All India Gramin Dak Sevak Union. There are around three lakh ‘Dak Sevaks’ across the country who act as delivery agents at rural post offices. They are an important part of a system wherein

wage payments are made to Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act workers. “The entire rural area network of the postal service depends on us, including MGNREGA payments. We not only cover the plains but also remote and tribal areas,” AIGDSU General Secretary S.S. Mahadevaiah told IANS. “We are not doing any work and are protesting. The public is supporting us as they understand our issues,” he said. The union leader asserted that they will continue with the strike till their demands are met.

Sterlite Copper closure order is legally valid, says Palaniswami C h e nna i , M ay 2 9 (IANS): Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K.Palaniswami on Tuesday said the order issued by the state government shutting down the Sterlite Copper plant is legally valid and blamed the DMK for the violence in Thuthookudi on May 22. Speaking in the assembly, he said the Government Order closing down the Sterlite Copper’s smelter plant in Thuthookudi is valid as the Central Pollution Control Board has not issued any order contrary to it. Popularly known as the Sterlite plant, the Sterlite Copper is a 400,000 tpa copper smelter plant owned by Vedanta Ltd. Palaniswami also said it was the DMK government that gave the nod for expansion of smelter capacity. Citing the action taken by the government before the May 22 police firing on the anti-Sterlite protestors, he said the government had held 14 rounds of talks with the members of the movement.

K.Palaniswami

Palaniswami said a crowd numbering around 20,000 people tried to march to Thuthookudi collectorate and police resorted to baton charge on May 22. He said DMK leader Geetha Jeevan defying the prohibitory orders staged an agitation when the violence broke as the protestors were instigated by some political parties and anti-social elements. Thirteen people were killed in the police firing on anti-Sterlite Copper protestors as they turned violent and indulged in arson. For more than two decades, the people of Thuthookudi have been

protesting against the copper smelter plant. Following the death of 13 persons in the police firing, the Tamil Nadu government orderd closure of the smelter plant. Not satisfied with the closure order, major opposition party DMK decided to boycott the state assembly sessions until the Tamil Nadu cabinet takes a policy decision to shut down the Sterlite Copper smelter plant. In a statement issued by the party, Whip R. Chakrapani said the Palaniswami government issued an order closing down the copper smelter plant without convening a cabinet meeting and taking a policy decision. Contending this would enable the company to seek relief from the courts, he alleged that the Chief Minister was not sincere about shutting down the plant. The DMK lawmakers on Tuesday attended the Assembly wearing black shirts to condemn the May 22 police firing.

CBI alleges scam in AirAsia clearance during UPA government New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): Targeting yet another alleged wrongdoing during the UPA regime, the CBI has named AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes and others in a criminal case of violating FDI norms in giving effective management to a foreign entity through FIPB clearance in 2013 and attempt to bribe for tweaking rules to get licence for its joint venture to operate international flights. The CBI FIR also names “unknown public servants” of the Civil Aviation Ministry, the then Foreign Investment Promotion Board, R. Venkataramanan, Director AirAsia, the the AirAsia Group Deputy CEO

rainbow coaching centre

T. Kanagalingam alias Bo Lingam. The FIR also alleges that in December 2014, Sunil Kapoor, who runs an in-flight catering company, along with Bo Lingam handed over a packet containing Rs 50 lakhs to facilitate the removal of the rule that required five years domestic flying experience and 20 aircraft to get licence to fly internationally. The CBI said it had received information that AirAsia India was indirectly controlled and operated by AirAsia Group and particularly AirAsia Berhad, violating the norms of the then FIPB. This structure was di-

Tony Fernandes

rectly formalised through a “Brand Licence Agreement” signed by AirAsia represented by Fernandes and AirAsia Berhad represented by Bo Lingam on April 17, 2013 which indirectly made AirAsia India a de facto subsidiary rather

than a joint venture. As per the then FDI policy, foreign airlines were allowed to own up to 49 per cent of shares in domestic airlines but effective management control must remain with the Indian partner. “It is further revealed that the shareholders and Indian partners of the joint venture, including the board members, were not only aware of these intentions but also consciously ensured violating the then FIPB norms. Hence, violation of FDI norms were prima facie found by giving effective management to a foreign entity. The FIR alleges that

Fernandes wanted the airline venture to be able to fly internationally from Day One and their local Indian partner Tata Sons Ltd through their nominee Venkataramanan would lobby to get all government approvals including the then FIPB clearance and amendment/removal the existing 5/20 rules of international civil aviation. It also names several others as playing a liasion role and that a secret cabinet note was sent in February 2014 to the cabinet to amend/remove 5/20 rule. The proposal, however,

could not be approved since elections were already announced. In its reaction, AirAsia said it refutes any wrongdoing and was cooperating with all regulators and agencies to present “correct facts”. In November 2016, A.A. Aiyar had initiated criminal charges against its ex CEO and also commenced civil proceedings in Bengaluru for such irregularities. “We hope to bring early resolution to all such issues,” an AirAsia spokesperson said.

The statement said that even Mahatma Gandhi visited the RSS camp at Wardha and later stated that he was impressed by the “strict discipline, simplicity and lack of discrimination” in the organisation. Former President Zakir Husain, socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan and General (later Field Marshal) K. M. Carriappa were other personalities who attended RSS events. SC stays death sentence of coconvict in minor’s rape-murder

ting reprehensible and gruesome murder of an innocent child to satisfy their lust is nothing but death”. Both convicts had kidnapped the girl on the night of April 14-15, 2017, gangraped her and strangled her. The High Court noted that the half-naked body of the girl was dumped near a road, in total disregard to decency and respect for the dead. The High Court also noted that the “deceased was an innocent child, who could not have provided any excuse, much less any provocation, for committing such heinous act...” It further noted that the accused showed “lack of any remorse, as after committing the crime they acted normal” and asked for liquor from one Jaipal. “We are immensely appalled by the alarming increase in the incidents of child rapes and also being aware of the rising anger of society over rape of minors across the country. Therefore, we consider death sentence as a measure of social necessity and also a mean of deterring other potential offenders,” the High Court said.

Three PILs on Tuticorin incident filed in Madras HC C HE N NAI , M ay 2 9 (AGENCIES): Three PILs, relating to the violence and the resultant police firing in Tuticorin over the Vedanta group’s copper plant, were today filed before the vacation bench of the Madras High Court. The public interest litigations are expected to come up tomorrow. In his petition, social activist ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy sought the setting up of a high-level social media monitoring committee to take immediate measures to “restrict or coverage of trouble/violence-prone incidents,” as, he felt, they could fuel mob fury. In his petition, a journalist Silambarasan, among other things, sought a direction of the court to constitute an independent judicial committee headed by sitting high court judge to probe the firing incident. In the other plea, president of Makkal Arasu Katchi S Rajanikanth sought the suspension of police officials who had allegedly “indulged in violence and killed innocent people.”

“Such a person who considers the RSS poisonous, dirty, even worse than snake... such a person is being called by the RSS. On what issue are they calling. Has Pranab Mukherjee changed his views or there is no self-respect left in the RSS,” Dikshit said. Communist Party of India leader D. Raja said that it was for Mukherjee to decide on the invite. Rakesh Sinha, who teaches at Delhi University and is Honorary Director of the India Policy Foundation, said Mukherjee’s acceptance of the invitation was a message to the nation that on vital issues there should be dialogue and adversaries are not enemies. Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Manoj Jha said Mukherjee will tell the RSS to “have a delete button in their divisive politics”. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that the Congress leaders should follow in the footsteps of Mukherjee. S a m a j wa d i Pa r t y Spokesperson Ghanshayam Tewari said too much politics should not be read into the issue.

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): Delhi Lt. Governor Anil Baijal on Tuesday asked the Delhi Transport Department to take up the matter of using CNG buses with the neighbouring states. His suggestion came as he chaired a meeting at the Raj Niwas here convened by the Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) to discuss and review the issues of traffic management and environmental pollution in and around ISBT Anand Vihar where three terminals - bus, metro and railways - converge. During the meeting, also attended by Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot, Environment Minister Imran Hussain and representatives from Railway and Metro, he directed the Transport Commissioner to take up the matter regarding the use of CNG buses with the neighbouring states. Baijal also fixed the deadline of September 30 to complete the various ongoing works to control air pollution in the area. He also directed the departments to take stringent actions against the violators.

Modi biggest victim of political intolerance: Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi

K A N P U R , M ay 2 9 (AGENCIES): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been the “biggest victim of political intolerance” and from Gujarat to Delhi “political conspiracies” were hatched against him by “frustrated forces” who have been defeated by the people of the country, Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said today. He also claimed that the Modi government had ensured development with dignity of all the minorities and listed several initiatives taken by the Centre for the welfare of these sections. At a press conference here on the occasion of completion of four years of the BJP-led central government, Naqvi said “the caucus of corruption” was unable to digest Modi’s commitment to inclusive growth. “Today our government has made development as the mood of the nation. We have made development, a people’s movement. Prime Minister Modi has become ‘Vikas Nayak’ for the people of the country,” the minister said. Naqvi said the Modi government had established “marks of success” by removing “stains of failures” left by the previous regime.

Let JNU committee take call on Johri’s suspension, says HC

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): The Delhi High Court on Tuesday said the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) will take a decision on the suspension of Professor Atul Kumar Johri, accused of sexually harassing women students, after examining the material on record. Justice Rajiv Shakdher’s direction came while hearing a petition filed by several women students seeking suspension of the professor, against whom eight FIRs have been lodged alleging sexual harassment, and to restrain him from entering the campus. The court said that the ICC, which deals with sexual harassment matters on campus, would examine the material available on record, including the FIRs, complaints and statements of witnesses. “...thereafter, reach a prima facie finding as to whether respondent No.4’s (Johri) conduct is such that it merits his immediate suspension and or removal from the campus,” the court

said. “In case a prima facie case of misconduct is made out, the ICC shall make suitable recommendations to the Vice Chancellor.” The court has asked the ICC to place a report before it within three weeks, but directed it not to insist the petitioners to depose before it. The bench has asked police to render necessary assistance to the committee. To provide a safe working environment to the petitioner students, the court reiterated that the professor would have no access to laboratory No. 409 of the Department of Life Sciences where the students work. However, the authority concerned in the JNU would

provide complete access to petitioner to laboratory No. 409 for doing their research work, the court ordered directing to appoint separate supervisors for them. The court also said that if necessary, a separate laboratory should be given to professor to conduct his work, but directed Johri not to contact complainants or any potential witness, and in case of any infraction, the Vice Chancellor would consider removal of professor from the campus. It also passed the direction that the professor should not take charge as warden of any women’s hostel on the JNU campus and listed the matter for August 17 for further hearing.

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed a Madhya Pradesh High Court order pronouncing the death sentence for a person convicted along with an accomplice of the kidnapping, gang rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl. Staying the death sentence, a vacation bench of Justice L. Nagaswara Rao and Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar sought the state’s response to convict Santosh’s plea that challenged the High Court order to uphold his conviction and award of death sentence by a trial court. “There shall be a stay on the execution of the death sentence... let the original record be called from the trial court.” The apex court had earlier stayed the death sentence of co-accused Baghwani. Lawyer Joel and Ninni Susan Thomas had appeared for petitioner Satish. The High Court, by its May 9 judgment, upheld the conviction and death sentence to Baghwani and Satish and said that “the only punishment which the accused deserve for commit-

Congress Spokesperson Tom Vadakkan did not comment on Mukherjee’s acceptance of the RSS invite. “At this point, I have no comments to offer. Let the event take place first, only after that it will be appropriate to give comments. If you know everything about the history and the specialisation of the RSS and BJP, then I would not like to comment any more on that,” he said. But party leader and former MP Sandeep Dikshit asked if Mukherjee had changed his views on the RSS or the organisation had accepted the views of the former President. Dikshit said that M u k h e r j e e, w h o h a d served the Congress for decades before being appointed President in 2012, had told them that “there is no organisation as cheap, dirty, crafty, untruthful and unpatriotic as the RSS”. He said Mukherjee had said that the RSS should not exist in the country even for a minute.

K-1606

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): The RSS invite to former President Pranab Mukherjee for an event at its Nagpur headquarters sparked off a controversy, as the Congress and left leaders expressed unhappiness over his acceptance while the BJP and RSS saw nothing wrong in it. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) said in a statement that Mukherjee’s acceptance of the invite for the June 7 function was not “surprising”. Its leader Narender Kumar said that Mukherjee will be the chief guest at the concluding function of “Tritiya Varsh Varg” or third-year course and address the ‘swayamsevaks’. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will be the main speaker. “Those who know the sangh and understand it, it is not surprising for them or nothing new. It is normal for them because the RSS has been inviting prominent persons and those engaged in social service. This time, the RSS invited Dr Pranab Mukherjee and it is his greatness to have accepted the invitation,”

Israeli jets hit militant bases in Gaza

JERUSALEM, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Israeli jets bombed Gaza hours after militants from the territory on Tuesday fired more than 25 mortar shells toward communities in southern Israel in what appeared to be the largest single barrage since the 2014 Israel-Hamas war, reports AP. The Israeli military said no one was hurt and that most of the mortar shells were intercepted by the Iron Dome defense system, though one of the shells landed near a kindergarten shortly before it opened. The high volume of projectiles came as tensions have been running high along the Israel-Gaza border and a fierce Israeli response was expected. “Israel will exact a heavy price from those who seek to harm it and we see Hamas as responsible for preventing such attacks,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said following the barrage. Shortly after that warning, Israeli jets began dropping bombs at what security officials in Gaza called Islamic Jihad militant training site. Smoke was seen rising near the town of Deir al-Balah in the coastal strip and the Israeli military said the explosions there were

related to its activity. No injuries were reported. Islamic Jihad was believed to be behind the attacks with a green light from Hamas, the militant Islamic group that runs the Gaza Strip. “We are sticking to the right of return as well as responding to the Zionist crimes,” said Khaled al-Batsh, an Islamic Jihad leader in Gaza. I s m a i l R a dwa n , a Hamas official, said the barrage proved that the “resistance is capable of hurting the occupation and it proved this today by responding to its crimes.”

Radwan spoke as a two fishing boats carrying students and medical patients set sail out of Gaza City’s port, aiming to break 11 years of naval blockade that Egypt and Israel imposed after the militants violently took control of the coastal territory. The expedition would be a new way of challenging the blockade but also raises the possibility of more confrontation and violence as Israel bars any boats from Gaza reaching farther out than a six-nautical-mile radius into the Mediterranean Sea. Hamas acknowledged it was mostly

a symbolic act. It also marks eight years since Israeli commandos raided a Gaza-bound aid flotilla, killing nine proPalestinian Turks and sparking an international outcry against the blockade. In southern Israel, angry residents complained about how vulnerable they felt after 15 years of rocket fire threats from neighboring Gaza, which will likely put pressure on the government to retaliate harshly. Adva Klein, a resident of Kibbutz Kfar Aza, said she only got about two hours of sleep because of the frequent incoming fire and the sirens warning of them. Other residents reported machine gun fire from Gaza as well. “It’s been a really scary morning,” said Adele Raemer, a resident of Kibbutz Nirim. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman said he was convening the top military brass at his Tel Aviv headquarters to discuss the situation. The border area has been tense in recent weeks as the Palestinians have held mass protests aimed at lifting a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt after Hamas seized power in 2007.

Italy in turmoil as caretaker prime minister assembles team

Brazil truckers’ mega-strike hits day nine

Cottarelli as caretaker prime minister sparked angry calls for the president’s impeachment, since most lawmakers backed Savona. Mattarella said that an openly eurosceptic economy minister was counter to the parties’ joint promise to simply “change Europe for the better from an Italian point of view”. Savona has called the euro a “German cage” and said that Italy needs a plan to leave the single currency “if necessary”. League leader Matteo Salvini, a fellow eurosceptic who was Savona’s biggest advocate, said his side’s joint plan for a government failed because of pressure from the “powers-that-be, the markets, Berlin and Paris”. “This isn’t democracy, this isn’t respect for the popular vote. It’s the latest slap in the face,” Salvini said, from those that say “Italy should be a slave, scared and precarious”. Five Star chief Luigi Di Maio called on party supporters to attend a rally in Rome on Saturday, the anniversary of Italy’s transformation into a republic in 1946, after what he called “Italian democracy’s darkest night”.

RIO DE JANEIRO, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): A megastrike by Brazilian truck drivers furious over high fuel costs entered day nine Tuesday, despite a slight easing in the transport nightmare that has paralyzed Latin America’s biggest economy and rattled the unpopular government, reports AFP. With reports of some key roadblocks lifted by truckers and an increase in the flow of fuel from refineries, buses and goods vehicles slowly started to get back on the road. But significant numbers of truckers remained determined to hold on, even though their initial demands for cheaper fuel have been met. The stubbornness of part of the truckers surprised the center-right government and even some union leaders, prompting allegations that the protests were being manipulated to try and bring down President Michel Temer. Rio de Janeiro, where almost all gas stations have been shut for several days, saw some fuel deliveries Tuesday. A column of 300 food trucks also made it into the city, where many supermarkets have run out of fresh products, G1 reported.

ROME, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Italy’s caretaker prime minister worked to assemble a cabinet on Tuesday to save the country from political turmoil in the face of resistance from far-right and anti-establishment parties, reports AFP. Financial markets plunged into a frenzy as Carlo Cottarelli was left in charge after efforts to end months of political deadlock hit their latest setback. President Sergio Mattarella on Monday blocked a cabinet proposed by the anti-immigrant League and their allies in the Five Star Movement (M5S). That left Cottarelli, a former IMF economist known as “Mr Scissors”, tasked with naming a technocrat gover nment. He was expected to present his cabinet to Mattarella within hours. F ive S t a r a n d t h e League, who hold a majority in both houses of parliament, have vowed to reject Cottarelli’s proposed technocrat government. New elections could be held as early as September as the most likely outcome of the political saga sparked by an inconclusive poll in March. On Sunday

Carlo Cottarelli

evening, the president vetoed the League-Five Star pick for economy minister, eurosceptic Paolo Savona. The populists cried foul and abandoned their joint bid for power. The fresh uncertainty in the eurozone’s third largest economy caused alarm on financial markets. Italy’s 10-year bond yields surged to over 300 basis points higher than Germany’s on Tuesday morning -- a sign of surging investor doubts over Italy’s financial stability. The Milan stock exchange plunged more than three percent on Tuesday morning. The euro also fell in Asian trade on Tuesday and was in danger of falling below the $1.16 level last breached in early November. Mattarella’s veto and subsequent nomination of

Duterte threatens war with Beijing over South China Sea M A N I L A , M AY 2 9 (IANS): The Philippines has warned China that it will go to war if Beijing crosses a red line by unilaterally mining the natural resources of the South China Sea, the country’s Foreign Minister said. In a speech on Monday, Foreign Minister Alan Peter Cayetano defended the Philippines government from allegations that they were taking a soft policy on Chinese militarization of the South China Sea. “President (Rodrigo Duterte) has already said that. If anyone gets the natural resources in the Western Philippines Sea, South China Sea, he will go to war,” Cayetano said. Tensions in the hotly disputed region have risen amid reports of the Chinese military landing bombers on their artificial islands for the first time. Under Duterte, who took office in 2016, the Philippines toned down its rhetoric towards China on the dispute. Cayetano said his department was repeatedly told to “file a protest” over Beijing’s actions in the South China Sea, CNN reported. “We are taking all diplomatic actions at the K

right time,” he said, adding that “China had been told of the red lines”. But he said it was unfair to single out China for its advanced militarization in the South China Sea. “If there is more than one country militarizing, and it’s not only the islands, if huge navies are sailing through the area, is that not militarization?” he said.

gether Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj, head of Libya’s U.N.backed government in Tripoli, and Gen. Khalifa Hifter, whose forces dominate eastern Libya. The conference aimed to forge a political roadmap that would restore order in Libya, where lawlessness has fed Islamic militancy, human trafficking and instability in the wider region that threatens Europe. Moving toward parliamentary and presidential elections by the end of 2018 was a key goal. Macron brought Sarraj and Hifter together for a con-

ference last July, producing a 10-point joint declaration that was the first of its kind between the rivals. It, too, looked toward elections, and also a cease-fire. That accord changed little on the ground in Libya, however, and critics dismissed the conference as a photo opportunity. The U.N. special envoy, Ghassan Salame, suggested that Tuesday’s agreement was a step forward. “This is a historic meeting. We do not speak in place of the Libyans. It’s the Libyans who agree all together in our presence. This is crucial,” Salame said. In the eight-point declaration that closed the conference, the Libyan leaders committed to accepting electoral results and ensuring funds and “strong security arrangements” for the voting. They also commit to work on “phasing out parallel government” and on “the unifying of the Libyan Central Bank and other institutions.” Libya is split between rival governments in the east and west. Representatives of Egypt, Russia and

the United Arab Emirates, which have backed Hifter and the administration in the eastern Libyan city of Tobruk, attended Tuesday’s conference. The agreement said little about what could prove to be the biggest challenge to holding elections and reuniting the country — an array of Islamist, tribal and other militias that hold real power on the ground.

KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 29 (IANS): The new Malaysian government has unblocked several media sites, years after they were blocked by the previous Najib Razak government. In a Facebook post, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission announced that sites including Sarawak Report, an investigative journalism site, and Medium were un-

blocked, reports Efe news. The Malaysian Insider (TMI) and its mirror site The Malaysian Outsider were also unblocked last week after being off the web and blocked for more than two years. In its post, the commission said there was no longer any need to block those sites since the 1 Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) report had been made public.

Former Prime Minister Najib Razak has been accused of diverting almost $700 million into his personal accounts from 1MDB, a government strategic development company. PARIS, MAY 29 (AGENCIES): Rival Libyan leaders meeting in Paris on Tuesday tentatively agreed on a political roadmap leading to parliamentary and presidential elections on Dec. 10, but the plan faces major obstacles in the North African country, where the rival authorities rely on an array of unruly militias, reports AP. In an early sign of trouble, the Libyan leaders declined to sign a closing declaration outlining their commitments, which include laying the groundwork for the vote with new electoral laws and establishing a “constitutional basis” by mid-September. French President Emmanuel Macron, who hosted the conference, nevertheless lauded the eight-point declaration as a “crucial step” toward stabilizing the country, which was plunged into chaos after the 2011 uprising that toppled Moammar Gadhafi. “It’s the first time these Libyan leaders accepted to work together and approved a joint declaration,” Macron said at the close of the brief

YouTube deletes half of ‘violent’ music videos

Y

ouTube says it has deleted more than half of the “violent” music videos that the country’s most senior police officer asked it to take down. More than 30 clips have been removed so far. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has blamed some videos for fuelling a surge in murders and violent crime in London - and singled out drill music. She asked YouTube to delete content which glamorises violence. Drill originated in Chicago. Its biggest breakout star is arguably Chief Keef, famous for his 2012 track I Don’t Like.

The genre’s lyrics often detail vivid accounts of taking drugs and violence. In February, 17-yearold rapper Junior Simpson was sentenced to life in prison after he and three others stabbed 15-yearold Jermaine Goupall to death. The court heard he’d penned a track about knife attacks before carrying out the killing. Giving him a life sentence, judge Anthony Leonard QC told Simpson: “You suggested the lyrics were just for show but I do not believe that, and I suspect you were waiting for the right opportunity for an attack.”

In the past two years police have asked YouTube to take down between 50 and 60 music videos, because they were deemed to incite violence. The video-sharing site has now removed more than 30 of them. “The gangs try to outrival each other with the filming and content - what looks like a music video can actually contain explicit language with gangs threatening each other,” the Metropolitan Police’s Mike West said. “There are gestures of violence, with hand signals suggesting they are firing weapons and graphic descriptions of what they would do to each other. Pressplay, a company that promotes drill music videos, said on its Instagram page that police had “forced” YouTube to take some clips down because of “what’s happened lately”. But the same post said the clips “will probably be back up in the next few weeks”. (BBC)

Frostrup: Men face ‘double standard’ over celebrity lust

B

roadcaster Mariella Frostrup has complained of a new “double standard” that allows women to lust over men - but sees accusations of sexism arise when the role is reversed. The presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Open Book reveals her concern when writing about the new TV series of Poldark in the Radio Times. She says she can comment on a “shot of a shirtless, sea-soaked Aidan Turner”. But men would not be able to remark similarly on his female co-stars. “As a woman, I can own a comment like that without too much fear of censure,” said Frostrup. “Indeed, there’s an undeniable sense of celebration among my girlfriends at the return of this sultry, tormented character, embodied by a delectable

young thespian pleasing all viewing generations. “But we live in confusing times and I’m the first to admit to double standards - if a male colleague had penned those preceding lines about any of Turner’s equally appealing female co-stars, his cries of contrition would be drowned out by Twitter’s Troll Chorus.” The presenter said she feared that “we are losing not only our sense of humour but our sense of proportion as we throw every act of perceived sexism into the #MeToo basket”. Frostr up added: “There’s an enormous difference between judging a person’s worth only on the basis of their physical assets and expressing admiration for a fellow human with God’s gift (allegedly) of good looks. The BEST. Right, Ivanka? Right?” Oswalt tweeted. Comedian Jim Carrey also got in on the criticism by sharing a cartoon inspired by the report. “1,500 innocent children ripped from their mothers’ arms at our border. Lost in Trump’s ‘system.’ Give us your tired, your poor, your huddle masses yearning to breathe free – and we will torture them for wanting a better life. From Shining City to Evil Empire in under 500 days.”

Comedian Chelsea Handler also criticized the photograph asking, “What in the world is wrong with this family? Is this picture supposed to remind Mexican asylum seekers what they’ve lost?” On Saturday, a report

stated the ORR lost track of 1,500 kids. Steve Wagner, an official with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service, disclosed the agency’s fumble to a Senate subcommittee last month. (FoxNews)

Strong and physical throughout, Tunisia were sorely lacking technique and attacking prowess. But when the disappointing Raphael Guerreiro

fluffed his lines, Esperance striker Anice Badri reduced arrears just before the interval. Portugal continued to dominate but after Bernardo Silva fired wide the hosts paid the price for loose defending when Fakhredine Ben Youssef hit a 64th minute equaliser. Portugal are likely to still be without Ronaldo when they face Belgium in Brussels on June 2 and Algeria in Lisbon on June 7.

Ronaldo and his goal scoring exploits would have been welcome in Braga, but the Portugal striker was given time off following Real Madrid’s 3-1 victory over

Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday. Portugal coach Fernando Santos gave Silva the nod and, despite a lack of playing time at Milan, the 22-year-old did well to head home the opener from Ricardo Quaresma’s pinpoint cross on 22 minutes. It was the 1000th goal scored in Portugal colours. Portugal doubled their

India is a sleeping giant: Schmid NEW DELHI, May 29 (PTI): New Zealand football coach Fritz Schmid on Tuesday dubbed India lying somewhere between “a sleeping giant and a rising competitor”. Schmid is with his team to take part in the Hero Intercontinental Cup, starting June 1. “I appreciate the opportunity to play in the hero Intercontinental Cup as for countries like us it provides an excellent option to play against three potential strong opponents and have a look at players who will take us forward for the future,” he said. Asked what impression he has about football in India, he sounded optimistic. “India is somewhere between a sleeping giant and a rising competitor. It’s a big country and from my

activity back in the Asian Football Confederation I realised there was a lot of activity at the top level with their professional league.” “At the same time, they were trying to put things together for grassroots and development aspects. I followed very closely their activities around the FIFA U-17 World Cup. There are a lot of efforts going on and it’s very important

for them to put the pieces together to find their position in terms of popularity of the sport in direct comparison to cricket.” He has been following the Indian team’s progress, and is aware of the challenges that await his team. “India have qualified for the AFC Asian Cup and it’s a big year for Indian Football. It’s understandable they are preparing for the Continental Championships while we are building up for a new campaign.” “I know Stephen Constantine is a very experienced coach who has been successful in many different countries. I expect them to be really prepared especially after the two weeks of preparatory camp in Mumbai. They will be playing at home and it will be a tough challenge for us.”

France beat Ireland 2-0 in a friendly match, despite the torrential rain that fell on Saint Denis, with goals from Olivier Giroud and Nabil Fekir. Coach Didier Deschamps, who was determined to give his star striker Antoine Griezmann a rest, played with an attack line formed by Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud and Nabil Fekir. France dominated from start to finish, driven by a brilliant Mbappe who, paradoxically, was the only one in the attack trident to go without a goal. With fans in the Stade de France chanting his name, Mbappe, assisted by Djibril Sidibe, was the first to attempt a shot in the third minute but missed the goal. In the 40th minute Chelsea forward Giroud managed to open the scoring for the French team. Three minutes later, Fekir took advantage from a bad save of the Irish goalkeeper and scored the second goal. With the field almost impossible to play on due to the rain, the second half ended with fewer goal attempts, among which some strong efforts by Mbappe, who did not want to leave the field without a goal.

New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) on Tuesday announced a spinheavy 16-member squad led by skipper Asghar Stanikzai for the historic one-off Test against India, starting on June 14 in Bengaluru. The squad comprises five spinners in Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Zahir Khan and left-arm spinner Hamza Kotak, who incidentally emerged as the leading wicket-taker in the recently concluded firstclass competition. Rashid and Mujeeb had fruitful campaigns in

the Indian Premier League 2018 (IPL) playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab respectively. Rashid picked up 21 wickets in 17 matches and was also the architect behind SRH’s road to the final which they lost to eventual champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday. Mujeeb too shone well with the ball, grabbing 14 wickets in 11 matches before a hand injury he sustained in a game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ruled him out of the remaining matches. Chinaman bowler, Zahir Khan,

Figo parts ways with Premier Futsal New Delhi, May 29 (IANS): Portugal football legend Luis Figo has terminated his collaboration with Premier Futsal, asserting that the domestic five-a-side tournament has turned out to be a complete failure. Figo, the president of Premier Futsal, has been involved with the multi-city tournament since its first edition in 2016. “I would like to announce that I am no longer the Honourary President of Premier Futsal, having ceased my relationship with Premier Futsal

Management (P) Limited,” Figo said in a statement. Alleging that Premier Futsal has lost its way, the former Real Madrid star said he will continue to support the development of the game. “Premier Futsal has completely lost its path to move forward and to fulfil its obligations towards those who worked and delivered on the project. Nevertheless, I wish to reaffirm my continuing support for the long term development of the game of the futsal,” the legendary midfielder added.

Another notable inclusion in the squad has been that of the 18-year old pace sensation Wafadar Momand. In Dawlat Zadran’s absence, the selectors went for the promising pacer, Wafadar. Syed Sherzad and Yamin Ahmadzai are the other main pacers in the setup. Mohammad Shahzad will don the gloves, with Afsar Zazai being included as the back-up wicketkeeper. The likes of Rahmat Shah, Stanikzai and the experienced all-rounder Nabi will shoulder the responsibility in the batting department. The selectors also named the squad for the three T20Is against Bangladesh, beginning on June 3 in Dehradun. French Open: Sharapova advances to second round

Maria Sharapova celebrates after winning the first round against Richel Hogenkamp on Tuesday.

Paris, May 29 (Agencies): Two-time champion Maria Sharapova survived a serious scare to claim a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp in her first French Open match since 2015 on Tuesday. The Russian was controversially not given a wildcard by organisers for the tournament last year, which took place shortly after her return from a doping suspension. Sharapova, the 28th seed, will face Croatia’s

Donna Vekic in the second round. The five-time Grand Slam winner is only seeded at Roland Garros courtesy of a semi-final run in Rome earlier this month which dragged her back into the top 30 for the first time since her ban. The 31-year-old took just 24 minutes to win the first set of a match which was delayed from Monday due to thunderstorms, but threw away a 3-1 lead in the second as world number 133 Hogenkamp forced

a decider. Sharapova was staring down the barrel of falling at first hurdle in a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since the 2010 Australian Open when trailing 3-0 in the third, but the former world number one dug deep and reeled off six straight games to edge into round two. Meanwhile, Garbine Muguruza saw off Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-6(0), 6-2 in a rain-disrupted battle of former champions to reach the second round of the French Open on Tuesday. The Spanish third seed, who lifted the Suzanne-Lenglen Cup in 2016, dropped serve twice in the opening set but easily prevailed in the tiebreak. She broke early in the second set and this time did not let her guard down against 2009 champion Kuznetsova, who is 43rd in the WTA rankings after returning to the tour only in March following a wrist injury. The Russian saved a first match point with a passing shot, Muguruza sent a backhand long on the second, but Kuznetsova bowed out after sending a forehand way too long on the third. Muguruza next faces French wildcard Fiona Ferro.

World Cup 2018: Brazil seek redemption SAO PAULO, May 29 (Agencies): With 16 days left to Russia 2018, 90 Minutes presents five-time champions Brazil, seeking redemption from an inauspicious 2014 World Cup in home soil led by the recovering Neymar. Brazil is shaking off the embarrassment of losing 7-1 to Germany in its home World Cup. Since Tite took over as coach in 2016, the fivetime world champions have become a winning machine again and were the first to qualify for Russia. Neymar, who missed the Germany humiliation through injury, is now racing to recover from a broken foot to make the trip to Russia. But there isn’t such a reliance now on the world’s most expensive player. In six games without Neymar, Brazil still won four times, including a friendly against Germany in Berlin

Warriors reach 4th straight NBA Finals

Golden State Warriors with the trophy after wrapping up the Western Conference final on Monday night.

HOUSTON, May 29 (Agencies): Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors turned all those Houston bricks into a road back to the NBA Finals. Needing not only all their firepower but also 27 straight misses by the Rockets during an epic cold streak from 3-point range, the Warriors rallied to keep alive their hopes for a repeat. Kevin Durant scored 34 points, Curry sparked

another third-quarter turnaround, and the Warriors earned a fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals by beating the Rockets 101-92 in game seven of the Western Conference finals on Monday night. The defending champions trailed by as many as 15 points in the first half. “We know we can make an 11-point lead evaporate with two minutes of good basketball,”

Klay Thompson said. Curry, who finished with 27 points, scored 14 of Golden State’s 33 points in the third quarter as Houston’s shooting didn’t just go cold, it froze. The Rockets missed all 14 3-point attempts in that quarter as part of a 1-for-21 second half from long range. The Warriors will host LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in game one of the finals

Warner, Bancroft to return to cricket

Cameron Bancroft and David Warner.

S Y D NEY, M a y 2 9 (Agencies): Disgraced Australian stars David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will return to competitive cricket at a low-level limitedovers tournament in the country’s tropical north in July, it was announced on Tuesday. Warner is serving a year-long ban from state and international cricket and Bancroft a nine-month suspension over a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa. But they are allowed to appear at club level in Australia and in domestic tournaments abroad.

As they work to rebuild their careers, the duo will feature in the NT Strike League in Darwin, a monthlong Twenty20 and one-day event that features four franchises -- Desert Blaze, City Cyclones, Northern Tide and Southern Storm. Bancroft is available for the entire tournament with Warner committing to two one-dayers on July 21 and 22. “We’re delighted that Cameron and David will be joining us in Darwin for the Strike League,” said Northern Territory Cricket chief Joel Morrison in a

statement. “Their presence and experience will be invaluable for our local players.” Warner, who is also set to play for his Sydney club side Randwick Petersham from September, spent time running cricket clinics last month in Darwin. He said he was keen to be part of a league that is designed to give emerging players experience against interstate and international talent. “I’m really looking forward to playing in the Strike League in July,” he said. “I heard so much about the competition while I was in Darwin earlier this month that I’m keen to be part of it.” Former Australian captain Steve Smith, who was also suspended over the tampering incident, is set to make his return at an inaugural Global T20 Canada event in Toronto from June 28-July 15.
