Kiren Rijiju, minister of state for Minority Affairs

John Barla and deputy chief minister Y. Patton led the BJP’s campaign trail across Eastern Nagaland on Friday.

Addressing an election rally for BJP candidate Cheong at Mon town, Sonowal asserted that the BJP-NDPP alliance was committed to work for peace, progress and prosperity of Nagaland. He said the holistic development of Nagaland and the entire Northeast was made possible due to the untiring efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Naga issue to remain as govt’s top priority: Rio

Correspondent

KOHIMA, FEB 17 (NPN): Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio repeated the same pledge since 2003, that his government’s ‘top priority’ will be the Naga political issue and that this will remain so when the NDPP-BJP alliance returns to power to form the new government. He said this while campaigning for NDPP candidate Kudecho Khamo for 18 Chozuba assembly constituency at Chozuba town local ground.

Rio claimed that the current UDA government has given its best efforts for bringing a solution and even went to the extent of forming an ‘opposition-less government’ under United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to facilitate an early solution.

However, he blamed divisions within Naga political groups which have today split into 12 recognised factions for causing the delay in securing solution.

He also observed that had Nagas been more united, then the issue could have been resolved and that solution could have also led to increase of an additional 20 assembly seats, two more Lok Sabha seats and one more Rajya Sabha seat for Nagaland. Rio also opined that there would be no complaints from people if one of the stakeholders was to agree to accept solution, since this was the ultimate goal and desire of every stakeholder.

region in the last eight years, claiming that no Prime Minister had given so much importance to growth and development of the region before that.

Sonowal, who is among the star BJP campaigners, stated that the peace and sustainable development in the region was the result of Modi’s vision to make the Northeast the new engine of growth for India.

He assured that under Modi’s leadership, the

BJP-NDPP alliance would continue to work towards peace, progress and prosperity of Nagaland, highlighting “Your vote for the BJP-NDPP alliance will be a vote for peace and progress of Nagaland”. He stated that India was working towards becoming a self-reliant country by 2047, a goal set by Modi to usher in economic progress in the country.

He also claimed that Nagaland was experiencing peace and development due

to the efforts of the Prime Minister to find a proper solution to the issues faced by Naga society.

The mentioned that the growth currently witnessed in the region was only the beginning of a glorious new era of progress to finally become the engine of growth for India in the future.

In his speech, Patton reiterated the statement of chief minister Neiphiu Rio that no other party would be accommodated in the alliance since NDPP-BJP combine would secure more than 40 seats. He assured that the NDPP-BJP government would provide a stable government and complete the tenure without any glitches.

He promised to develop Mon town if the BJP candidate was supported and given a chance to serve the constituency, adding that all efforts would be made to complete the medical college in Mon. Seeking support for Cheong, Patton

assured to take up development activities if the BJP candidate was elected. He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah would visit Mon district and stay for the night. He also rubbished the allegation that BJP was an antiChristian party by stating that it respected all religions and pointed out that one of the party’s star campaigners was a former pastor. Sonowal was also accompanied by Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs John Barla, Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak and others. Rijiju campaigns: Union Law and Justice minister Kiren Rijiju campaigned for BJP candidates in Mon district on Friday. Addressing the rally at Tizit for sitting MLA and BJP candidate P Paiwang Konyak, Rijiju said whatever commitment made by Paiwang was his (Rijiju) commitment and responsibility to fulfil it at any cost.

Rio confident of NDPP-BJP comeback

DIMAPUR, FEB 17 (NPN):

Nagaland chief minister

Neiphiu Rio explained that the proposal to continue with the 40:20 seat sharing alliance between BJP and NDPP was made by BJP for two reasons– BJP’s desire to have a regional party lead the government of which it wanted to be a partner and to respect the sentiments of people as Nagaland was a Christian-majority State. Interacting with the media on the sideline of a public rally for NDPP candidate for 2 Dimapur II assembly constituency Moatoshi Longkumer at Kuda village

ground here on Friday, Rio reiterated BJP’s statement that the NDPP-BJP alliance would win with a massive majority and would not need support of elected members from other parties to form the next government. On rumours that many candidates were contesting with his blessings, he

clarified that only the 40 candidates who had received NDPP tickets were official candidates and urged people not to be misguided by false claims made by other candidates. He also appealed the gathering to vote for NDPP candidate Moatoshi Longkumer.

He also took moral responsibility for eight out of 42 NDPP aspirants not being given NDPP tickets for the forthcoming Assembly election. Rio explained that the party does not have a high command system and since it was a grassroots-based party, it had to listen to the wishes of the people.

Jairam

Sonowal, Rijiju campaign in Mon for BJP Congress ready for a debate with BJP on

Staff Reporter

DI MAPUR, FEB 17 (NPN): All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of communications and MP(RS)

Jairam Ramesh said Congress accepts BJP’s challenge for a debate on election manifestoes, that was thrown up by convenor BJP State media cell Sapralu Nyekha recently.

Jairam said this while addressing a press conference at Congress Bhavan here on Friday. He said the debate will take place after BJP’s clarification on three issues- (1) its 2018 slogan ‘Election for Solution’. Jairam said five years have passed and where is the solution? Rather he said the slogan has instead become ‘Election For Confusion’, He also demanded that BJP clarify on its ‘philosophical statement’ – Framework

Agreement signed on August 3,2015- since eight years have passed since people of Nagaland were still waiting for Modi’s promised solution.

(2) he also asked BJP whether it was ready to give a categorical assurance to the people of Nagaland that BJP government would not disturb Article 371(A) of the Indian constitution in letter and spirit? He maintained that Article 371(A) was introduced by the Congress party 61 years ago on the principles of three Ps-- to “Preserve, Protect

and Promote the interest of Nagaland”. “This is a party (BJP), that in eight hours, in a dictatorial manner abolished Article 370 (in Jammu & Kashmir)”, he said.

(3) Thirdly, Jairam asked BJP whether it would dissociate from and condemn the statement made by one of the front organizations of the RSS-- Assam-based Janajati Dharma-Sanskriti Suraksha Manch’s (JDSSM) which has demanded removal of ST status of people who have embraced Christianity?

He said without clarification on these three issues, any debate on the manifesto would be “pointless, meaningless and a waste of time”.

The former UPA Union minister pointed out that BJP had in all its election manifestoes, promised to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC), and therefore

“There has been no development and no prosperity in Meghalaya so far. The time has come to relieve the State from the corrupt rule, and to bring the BJP to power under the leadership of Modi,” he appealed.

AGARTALA, FEB 17

The BJP leader said that time has come to get rid of these two families from Meghalaya and to make the BJP government under the leadership and guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“Once the BJP government is formed in the state, we will offer jobs in the most transparent manner and help poor and deserving candidates get jobs. All those who siphoned off money meant for the poor

people of Meghalaya, they all need to be probed thoroughly,” he said.

“Once the BJP government is formed in the state a committee led by Supreme Court judge will probe all the corruption cases and all culprits will be put behind the bar by following all norms laid down by our Constitution,” the Home Minister promised in presence of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who too addressed the election meeting.

Just look at West Bengal, the condition there is even worse than Meghalaya. In West Bengal, Tolabazi, cut money, corruption, lawlessness and crime is at its peak. If the people of Meghalaya choose Mukul Sangma he will establish the rule of Tolabazi, cut money, corruption, lawlessness and crime in Meghalaya also.”

Stating that Meghalaya is registering the least development and highest degree of corruption in India, the BJP leader appealed to the electorates, “You all should

Congress attacks NPP on unemployment and BJP for fielding ‘POCSO accused candidate’

Correspondent

SHILLONG, FEB 17: A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah described Meghalaya as the “most corrupt state”, Congress spokesperson Alka Lamba on Friday insisted “Meghalaya is not corrupt”.

The BJP which has two legislators in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly is one of the constituents in the National People’s Party (NPP)-led government.

Attacking the BJP for its claim of a double-engine government, Lamba said, “They (BJP) are actually a double trouble government. The double trouble is unemployment and inflation.”

“People want a change. Congress has come back in Himachal. In my recent visit to Tripura after spending 7 days and attending dozens of meetings, people have asked for a change like

Alka Lamba

Himachal,” the Congress spokesperson said, even as she exudes confidence that Congress is bouncing back to power in Meghalaya.

Stating that the NPPled MDA government and their alliance partner BJP have a lot to answer to the people of Meghalaya on the high rates of unemployment, Lamba took a dig at the NPP and BJP manifesto for the upcoming Meghalaya Assembly polls.

“Both the NPP and BJP manifesto have promised jobs for the youth but what were they both doing during the last five years (in government). If they could not generate employment in the last five years as promised in their old manifesto, they will never be able to fulfil the promises made in the new manifesto,” she said.

in the early morning hour demanding cancellation of the scheduled swearing-in of the new APPSC chairman on Friday evening.

Faced with large scale demonstrations by aggrieved aspirants and their family members, which triggered clashes with the police, the government temporarily suspended internet services in the Itanagar capital region from 6 pm of Friday to 5 pm of Sunday in the “interest of public safety”.

The government order said the step was taken at the request of the director general of police to “prevent further occurance of serious law and order problems during the bandh which has taken a serious turn after destruction of police barricades, lathi charge and firing of tear gas shells”. The bandh began at 5 am and thousands of protestors came out to the streets of the capital town

They also damaged posters of President Droupadi Murmu, who is scheduled to arrive in the northeastern state on February 20 on a two-day visit. Scores of protestors and police personnel were injured in subsequent clashes, which compelled the police to resort to lathi charge and to lob tear gas shells, officials said.

In Itanagar business establishments, markets, banks, educational institutions, government and private offices remained closed and vehicles kept off the road. The situation prompted Chief Minister Pema Khandu to call off the oath taking and appealed to the PAJSC-APPSC to withdraw its agitation. He invited

Poverty Index, Lamba said, “Meghalaya is one of the poorest states in the country. It is ranked 5th poorest in the country and the poorest in the North Eastern part of the country.”

“The high rate of Multidimensional poverty reveals that the people of Meghalaya have remained poor because of a lack of employment which leads to a lack of purchasing power and therefor poverty,” she said.

Congress questions BJP on POCSO accused candidate

In a bid to corner arch rival BJP, the Congress on Friday hit out at the saffron party for providing party ticket to Meghalaya State party vice president and POCSO (Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences ) accused, Bernard Marak for the upcoming assembly polls to be held on February 27. “We would like to ask Amit Shah the question which he has constantly been avoiding. The women and children of Meghalaya want to know while you claim to protect

women and talk about ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padao’ you have given a ticket to a man accused under POSCO,” Congress spokesperson, Alka Lamba told reporters here Friday.

“A man who has been known to run a brothel in Meghalaya and had run away to UP where he was caught and jailed. Instead of removing him from the party you have rewarded him with a ticket to contest from the BJP,” she said, without naming Bernard Marak. “Prime Minister has to answer this how can you claim to protect women when you bring such men who exploit women to represent the people of Meghalaya,” Lamba demanded.

“Modi, Shah, Irani are answerable to the people of Meghalaya, women of Meghalaya, to the girls of Meghalaya,” she asserted.

Marak, a former militant leader-turned member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council, a constitutional body in Meghalaya, is contesting against Chief Minister and National People’s Party (NPP) candidate, Conrad Sangma in South Tura assembly constituency.

“Wherever the BJP formed the government, it ended corruption in government jobs. In Meghalaya too, after the formation of the BJP government, work will be done to end corruption and provide jobs to the poor,” he said.

“When Modi became Prime Minister in 2014, the whole North East region was infested with insurgency and violence was persistent everywhere. We laid the foundation for a peaceful North East through our reforms and over 8,000 youths have joined the mainstream,” the senior BJP leader said.

“An average of 87.63 per cent polling was recorded in the assembly elections, which went till 8.30 or 9 pm on Thursday. The figure excluded the number of polled postal ballots,” Additional CEO Subhasish Bandhopadhyay told PTI.

Of the total 28.14 lakh voters, over 24.66 lakhs have exercised their franchise, he said.

Tripura had, in the 2018 assembly elections, recorded 89.38 per cent voting, while the highest poll percentage was 93 in 2013.

Notably, the Town Bardowali assembly constituency, where Chief Minister Manik Saha is pitted

against Congress nominee

Asish Kumar Saha, witnessed the lowest voter turnout at 80 per cent, while the Manu assembly seat in South Tripura recorded the highest polling percentage at 92.09, the official said.

Over 90 per cent of voting was recorded in several assembly constituencies in the February 16 polls, he said.

“All the polled EVMs were kept in 36 strong rooms where tight security arrangements have been made, besides round-theclock CCTV surveillance,” he said.

There will be a threetier security arrangement for the March 2 counting, he said. “The polling was largely peaceful, barring a few incidents in some areas. Five people were injured and six were arrested based on five specific FIRs during the polling day,” Inspector General (IG) police G K Rao told reporters on Thursday.

IPFT discussing seat-sharing with both ally BJP, opposition TIPRA

IPFT President Prem Kumar Reang said that they held a close door meeting with the TIPRA leaders.

GUWAHATI/AGARTALA, JAN 22 (IANS): Tripura ruling coalition member Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) has been holding seat-sharing talks with both current ally BJP and opposition Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) for the February 16 assembly polls.

IPFT President and state minister Prem Kumar Reang on Sunday said that they held a close door meet-

The IPFT, since 2009, has been demanding to make the areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous

District Council (TTAADC) as a full-fledged state while the TIPRA, since 2021, has been demanding elevation of the TTAADC areas by granting of ‘Greater Tipraland State’ under Article 2 and 3 of the Constitution. After the Saturday’s meeting in Guwahati, Reang said that the Central government and the BJP did not respond to their demand and if the BJP fulfilled its demands, “we would certainly fight the forthcoming polls jointly”.

‘Won’t accept sealed cover suggestions’: SC on Adani ECI grants name, symbol to Shinde’s Sena

NEW DELHI, FEB 17 (PTI): The Supreme Court on Friday refused to accept in a sealed cover the Centre’s suggestion on a proposed panel of experts for strengthening regulatory measures for stock markets in the wake of the recent Adani Group shares crash triggered by Hindenburg Research’s fraud allegations.

Observing that it wanted “full transparency for protection of investors”, the top court also ruled out the possibility of any sitting judge overseeing the functioning of the proposed panel.

“We are closing it for orders,” said the bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud after hearing brief submissions by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and PIL petitioners including lawyers Prashant Bhushan and M L Sharma.

At the outset, the law officer said he had given a note on the names and “remit” (scope) of the committee in a sealed cover. ” This has been given with two intentions in mind. A. a holistic view is taken and the truth comes out; B. No unintended message goes out having an impact on the security market, which is an emotion driven market,” Mehta said.

The bench referred to the losses suffered by the investors. The law officer said he has no issues with regard to any judge supervising the committee.

“We would rather not

accept the sealed cover suggestions. We want to ensure transparency. In case we take your suggestions from sealed cover, it automatically means the other party won’t know,” said the bench, which also comprised Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala .

“We want full transparency for the protection of investors. We will form a committee. There will be a sense of confidence in the court,” the bench said.

“Sitting (SC) judges can hear the matter and they cannot be the part of the committee,” the CJI said, adding he has been facing difficulties in setting up benches everyday.

On February 10, the top court had said the interest of Indian investors need to be protected against market volatility in the backdrop of the Adani Group stocks rout and asked the Centre to consider setting up a panel of domain experts headed by a former

judge to look at strengthening the regulatory mechanism.

The crucial hearing on the PILs on Friday assumed significance in the wake of the recent developments like the Centre agreeing to the apex court’s proposal to set up a committee, likely to be headed by a former Supreme Court judge, to go into the regulatory regimes.

Stressing that statutory bodies like market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) are “fully equipped” and are on job, the central government had expressed apprehension that any “unintentional” message to the investors that regulatory bodies in India needed monitoring by a panel may have some adverse impact on the flow of money into the country.

The Centre had told the bench that it wanted to provide details such as names and the scope of the panel’s mandate in a “sealed cover”.

Maoists blow up Jharkhand panchayat office

CHAIBASA

(JHARKHAND), FEB 17

(PTI): A building used as a panchayat office was blown up by Maoists at a village in Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum, police said on Friday. Improvised explosive devices were used for the blast, Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Shekhar told PTI. The building was blasted by CPI(Maoists) at Kadamdiha on the intervening night of Thursday-Friday. The antinaxal operation launched since January 11 in Kolhan area of the district following tip-off about the presence of top Maoist leaders, including Misir Besra who was carrying a bounty of Rs. 1 cr on his head, was continuing, the SP said.

torch’ poll symbol allotted last year.

The Election Commission also held the 2018 changes to the Shiv Sena party constitution as “undemocratic” since it centralised the party’s control and, in broader to all parties, asked them to ensure that their constitutions allowed free, fair and transparent elections to the party posi-

tions. “I thank the Election Commission. The majority counts in democracy. This is the victory of Balasaheb [Thackeray]’s legacy. Ours is the true Shiv Sena,” Shinde said as his supporters set off firecrackers across Mumbai and other parts of the state. Sources said Shinde’s next move will be to call party elections that are expected to anoint him

party chief. Calling the Election Commission’s “murder of democracy” and a “theft”, Uddhav Thackeray slammed Shinde as “once a traitor, always a traitor”. Sanjay Raut, Shiv Sena MP from Mr Thackeray’s team, said, “Such a decision was expected. We don’t have faith in the Election Commission.” His colleague Arvind Sawant said the former Chief Minister’s camp will challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.

Following his rebellion in June, when Eknath Shinde flew away with most lawmakers of the party with the help of the BJP, setting off the eventual ouster of Uddhav Thackeray’s state government, the two sides have been fighting for the party’s identity.

MCD mayor polls: Nominated members have no right to vote: SC

NEW

DELHI,

FEB 17

(ANI): Supreme Court on Friday ruled that the election to Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Mayor shall be conducted first and nominated persons have no right to vote in meetings of the Corporation.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud also directed the concerned authority to issue notice for the election of mayor and the first meeting of MCD shall be taken place within 24 hours. The court also directed that notice shall fix the date at which the election of the mayor, deputy mayor and other members shall be held.

The apex court said it must be noted that the elec-

tion of the mayor shall be conducted first in the first meeting of MCD and once elected he shall preside over the election of the deputy mayor. Supreme Court also noted that a provision in Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act indicates that persons nominated shall not have the right to vote in meetings of the corporation. The court also expressed its inability to accept the submission by MCD and Delhi Lieutenant Governor on certain issues. The court remarked that the mayor has to be elected immediately as it does not look good if the mayoral polls are not conducted in the national capital. The court also noted that the provisions related

to municipal elections. The court was hearing a joint petition of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Shelly Oberoi challenging the Delhi Lieutenant Governor’s decision to permit the nominated members to vote in the elections for mayor and deputy mayor in MCD. In the plea, the petitioner demanded time-bound elections to the post of MCD mayor, deputy mayor and member of the standing committee. Recently the high-octane political drama unfolded inside the Delhi Civic Centre as the House met for a third time this month to elect the mayor, only to be deferred till the next date due to a ruckus over the nominated members being permitted to vote.

Interesting poll battles

Threestates in the north east are going to the polls in February- in BJP-governed Tripura, polling took place on February 16 with voter turn out at 87.6 %. Next simultaneous polling will be held on February 27 in Meghalaya and Nagaland. In Tripura, the BJP is in power with a local ally, the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT). After having made significant inroads in Tripura in 2018, the saffron party had put an end to the Left’s long rule, but had to remove Biplab Deb from the chief minister’s post in 2022 to thwart an anti-incumbency wave. The next man in, chief minister, Dr Manik Saha, faces the challenge of growing fragmentation in the state unit and a tumultuous relationship with its closest ally, the IPFT. The key issue in Tripura is undoubtedly the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 which seeks to amend the Citizenship Act of 1955 to provide citizenship to illegal immigrants belonging to six minority religious communities from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The ruling BJP is in favour of the bill, while the opposition Congress and the TMC are opposed to it. The other regional party, The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) Motha founded by former Congress leader Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, is strong in tribal areas and rules the state’s tribal autonomous district council. The party has decided to go solo since no political party has given it a written assurance on its core demand of Greater Tipraland. If the CPM-Congress alliance can form a post-poll alliance with the TIPRA Motha, provided they make up the numbers, then the BJP will have to think of ‘options’. In Meghalaya, the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Front(MDF) headed by NPP’s Conrad Sangma as chief minister includes United Democratic Party(UDP), People’s Democratic Front(PDF), BJP, Hill State People’s Democratic Party(HSPDP) and independents. At present, the BJP has decided to go solo in Meghalaya as the party’s stance on the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and other allied issues had come in conflict with that of its alliance partner. The BJP is not a major player and is looking to make alliances with regional parties to form a government. The fight is mainly between the ruling NPP, its alliance partner the BJP and the TMC made up of former Congress chief minister Mukul Sangma and host of former Congress legislators. The Congress has to rebuild a new and young team which may pay dividends in future. The UDA in Nagaland is led by three-time chief minister Neiphiu Rio of the NDPP and the coalition includes BJP, NPF and independents. The UDA is the second ‘opposition-less government’ in the state after the first one in 2015. This time ticket distribution in Nagaland has been very difficult for the NDPP and the BJP as both alliance partners were swamped by ticket aspirants. Eventually those who could not be given tickets are fighting under other political parties and most of them having no roots or support base in the state. The state BJP is contesting 20 and its alliance leader NDPP is contesting 40 seats. There is a proxy battle going on between NDPP and BJP as both have set up candidates in other parties. Both NDPP and BJP are fighting anti-incumbency and various failures and so the proxy candidates are insurance for safety in numbers. That will be known only on March 2 when results are declared.

Taking the Initiative Against Depression

Arise and eat. —1 Kings 19:5

The angel in this passage did not give Elijah a vision, or explain the Scriptures to him, or do anything remarkable. He simply told Elijah to do a very ordinary thing, that is, to get up and eat. If we were never depressed, we would not be alive— only material things don’t suffer depression. If human beings were not capable of depression, we would have no capacity for happiness and exaltation. There are things in life that are designed to depress us; for example, things that are associated with death. Whenever you examine yourself, always take into account your capacity for depression.

When the Spirit of God comes to us, He does not give us glorious visions, but He tells us to do the most ordinary things imaginable. Depression tends to turn us away from the everyday things of God’s creation. But whenever God steps in, His inspiration is to do the most natural, simple things— things we would never have imagined God was in, but as we do them we find Him there. The inspiration that comes to us in this way is an initiative against depression. But we must take the first step and do it in the inspiration of God. If, however, we do something simply to overcome our depression, we will only deepen it. But when the Spirit of God leads us instinctively to do something, the moment we do it the depression is gone. As soon as we arise and obey, we enter a higher plane of life.

ABAM highlights issues for Feb 19 prayer

Time is understood in the Bible realistically as the time of opportunity and fulfilment. When Christ’s birth was proclaimed, it was a time of celebration for the shepherds and lowly whereas it was a time of apprehension for the King Herod. Bible also talks about the time of liberation of the Israelites, the time of wilderness, the time of exile and so on. This realistic understanding of Time helps us to realize Time as an opportunity. Recognizing the time as God’s gracious gift and opportunity is not

enough but we need to believe that it is given to us so that we discern our time and see where God is at work.

Today God’s given prime time has come for the Christians in Nagaland to consciously participate in selecting our rightful political leaders with fervent prayers to the God of all Creation and our Redeemer Jesus Christ.

As we also join our hearts in the prayer for persecuted Christians, we are reminded that the contemporary Indian scenario is marked by the phenom-

enon of the resurgence of religious fundamentalism causing violence to our society. There is rampant persecution of Christians and other minority communities who experience not only pain and shedding of blood but the exercise of physical force by the dominant community that damages or forcibly interfere with the personal freedom, verbal or violent conducts.

As we pray for our persecuted Christian brothers and sisters in India, let us be informed that, com-

munalism has become a national menace with detrimental effect on the minority Christian community who became easy targets. We witness newer dangers to society, to democratic and secular values in the form of communalism, communal violence and rise of new social political forces based on religion in the political arena.

Christians! Let us be vigilant towards the engineered and tactful forces of unsecularization, militancy and politicization of religion, exclusivism, dictatorship, fanaticism,

misogyny, ill treatment of minorities, jingoistic nationalism, violence and continue to resist against any dehumanizing forces that are taking place at our doorsteps.

Our God does not demand perfection but God works within us to produce perfection. Faith is believing God and stepping out by obedience knowing that God can be trusted.

Those who walk by faith, allow God to guide their steps knowing that God will never forsake them nor allow them to be deprived.

God gives grace to the humble, but resists the proud.

Christians, let us ask ourselves whether we are utilizing God’s given time in a meaningful way in the light of what the Bible has taught us. Colossians 4:5 ‘Conduct yourselves with Wisdom toward outsiders making the most of the opportunity’ for Christ is with us always, to the end of time; in him our efforts and labor cannot be lost.

Two students die in two days: who are they? why and for what?

Darshan Solanki,18-year student pursuing B. Tech, in Chemical engineering @ IIT, Powai, joined three months ago, committed suicide by jumping from the 7th floor of a hostel building located within the campus of IIT, Powai. on the 12th February, 2023. Aday later, on the 13th February, 2023, Akhla, 22-year final year engineering student, daughter of a laborer working in Kuwait @ IIT, RK Valley in Andhra Pradesh, was found dead in her hostel room.

Both of them belonged to Dalit community – a phrase which is affirmative and assertive, but the majoritarian use a phrase “Scheduled caste”, which is demeaning and derogatory. In all the correspondences and notifications, the governments at the Centre and states use Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) to denote those belonging to avarnas (outside the varna system) and those who live in the forests (vanachals). Two young millennials in a world of survival, cut-throat competition and intense casteist overtones wanted to pursue their dreams and aspirations enrolling in one of the top-notch institutes of the country – Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). Darshan Solanki, 18 years old, joined IIT, Powai, in the stream of chemical engineering barely three months ago and Akhla, 22-year-old final year engineering student, daughter of a laborer went to the extreme of taking away their lives by committing suicide.

Darshan’s parents allege that

when he visited his home a month ago, he did tell them that the moment they came to know about his identity he was isolated and thus started harassing and taunting him for studying without paying any fee, whereas the casteist mind-set had to pay fee. Caste is India’s scourge, an aberration and is regressive. What probably would have been the reasons to take extreme steps, since no note was left? Whether suicide note is left or not, SCs/STs are pushed to take extreme steps because there has been no support system.

In recent times young Dalits pursuing higher education resorting to such extreme steps are becoming more common. Everyone knows the reasons behind their deaths. Some in their suicide note write like Rohith Vemula – a PhD student in Central University, Hyderabad, while others don’t disclose reasons. Young millennials those belonging to Dalits and indigenous communities with great difficulty join these institutes to pursue their dreams. Prior to realizing their dreams they’re gone.

A few reach the top educational ladder such as IIT for professional degrees. Before their completion the dynamics of caste push them to take away their lives.

The casteist India knows how to stop the Dalits and the Tribals not to reach high echelons of professional education.

For the casteists and dominant castes Dalits and Tribals climbing up the ladder of education that too in professional streams cannot be digested or

even tolerated. Even in the 21st Century, in 2023 we come across levels of violence and kinds of atrocities committed against them.

Education is one of the keys for the Dalits and Tribals to break the shackles of caste and in the process come out of it. Education for them means self-assertion.

Casteist mind-set operates right across – be it the United States or United Kingdom or wherever one may have born and brought-up. Caste tends to influence their mind-set and behavioral patterns towards the Dalits and the indigenous people. Police in the case of Darshan Solanki alleged that it was an ‘accident’.

The statement itself rips open the casteist mind of the police force. Without any investigation the police seem to have come to conclusion. Students hailing from Dalit and Tribal categories are harassed and humiliated in such ways forcing them to take drastic action thereby leading to inflict pain – ending their own lives.

The dominant caste categories and casteist mind-sets are averse of ‘reservation’ because of the fact that it enables ‘SCs’ and ST’ to get into specialized professional institutions such as IIT via quota system. The casteist mind-set thinks that those SCs and STs entering into IITs and other prestigious institutions do not ‘deserve’ because there are ‘non-meritorious. Casteist mind-set shall never accept them as equals and deserve equal dignity. And so, there’s a caste angle that would have prompted

them to take extreme step. Unable to take the harassment any longer they might have decided to end their lives. This is one way of liquidating Dalits and Tribals from the face of the earth.

Two students committing suicides consecutively in two days opens the social fabric of the Indian society in which caste is the foundational and regulating principle. Caste is systematic and structural which is embedded in India’s social, economic, religiocultural and political systems.

In a country and a society where the opportunities are negated for Dalits and Tribals, the available avenue within the Constitution is reservation. If not for the constitutional provision ‘reservation’, the Dalits and Tribals would be living in harrowing situation. To substantiate how the caste pervades in to corporate companies a book recently published The Company We Keep: Insights Into Indian Corporate Culture, by Divya Khana, locates the problems that the business corporations face. She says that though the challenges stick out like the visible tip of an iceberg, culture poses the biggest challenge which is like a slow-moving giant lurks deep under the surface.

To her one cannot deal sufficiently with problems at surface levels if we do not understand the depths that drive them. Corporate culture is driven and regulated by hierarchy that runs from topdown.

Respect for authority and fear for it automatically runs though

like any Indian family structure. It is like snake and ladder wherein we see a strong cultural bias that seeps through and through.

Further, the deep inequalities that reflects in the Indian culture inevitably crept into our corporate culture that obviously flows from top-down; Similarly stress also always flows downwards if one from the top-middle is stressed out or feels insecure or scared it automatically flows down.

The book talks about the ways with which corporate culture also perpetuates caste system. Even in IIT if we take the percentage of those castes representing the faculty, middle-level staff and students, it is undoubtedly the dominant castes as against the minuscule which is negligible percent represent of Dalits and Tribals categories. For students hailing from Dalit and Tribal backgrounds there is no adequate support system that caters to psychological and academic pressures that emanates from the casteist forces.

Unless and until there are sound back-up for these historically oppressed and systematically alienated communities, the number of students committing suicides will be on rise. This is what the dominant casteist mind-set wants. More importantly, as long as the binaries such as “We” and “Them”, prevails more such incidences will happen. The so-called ‘prestigious’ institutions such as IITs exists with caste aberrations that are unleashed by dominated by ‘upper castes’.

Spy balloon saga continues to surprise amid rising US–China tension

Over the past week, the US has realised and revealed that an active fleet of Chinese spy balloons has been operating across the northern hemisphere for several years.

This all started to become apparent when a Chinese balloon, some 60 metres high and carrying a sensor payload of more than a tonne, was sighted by people in offices and homes in Billings, Montana. The white balloon, highlighted against a bright blue sky, was described as like a second moon. The saga continues to evolve. After the balloon was shot down off the South Carolina coast, three more objects were similarly engaged in northern Alaska, Canada’s Yukon Territory and over one of the Great Lakes. All three were flying inside territorial airspace.

The nature and origin of these objects is still unclear. US officials say the objects were not manoeuvring or communicating, helpfully noting “there is no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity”.

These four shootdowns are the first in the history of the US-Canadian North American Aerospace Defence Command, originally set up during the early Cold War. In the background, another large Chinese spy balloon was understood to be overflying Costa Rica, Colombia and Venezuela.

A purposeful, ongoing programme

The first balloon has already had several impacts.

It quickly led to the cancellation of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s planned visit to Beijing of which much was hoped. A minor domestic ruckus erupted as Republicans accused the Biden administration of being soft on China by not shooting the balloon down as early as possible. Congress voted 419-0 to condemn “the Chinese Communist Party’s use of a high-altitude surveillance balloon over United States territory as a brazen violation of United States sovereignty”. Lastly, the US blacklisted a Chinese research institute and five aviation and defence companies, cutting them off from accessing American technology. The implication is the equipment recovered from the first balloon’s wreckage has revealed the blacklisted organisations were involved in building it.

As more comes to light each day, China’s spy balloon programme appears purposeful, well-planned, well-funded and ongoing. This was not a slapdash activity by some freelancing Chinese group but a highly organised military activity, at least partly conducted from Hainan Island on the edge of the South China Sea. The programme is likely to continue with its main focus being electronic surveillance, in particular mapping the civil and military communication networks of other countries, presumably to aid monitoring and possible later intrusions.

The Pentagon noted that over the past several years Chinese balloons have been spotted operating over Latin America, South America, South-East Asia, East Asia and Europe.

Global wind patterns mean these operations are likely to be restricted to the northern hemisphere unless the balloons are launched off Chinese naval ships.

Hunting balloons

Detecting and shooting down such balloons requires a well-organised national air defence system that most countries do not have. Nevertheless, the sudden shooting down of three more objects immediately after the first suggests the US may have gleaned critical intelligence as it tracked the first balloon while it flew across America.

The first balloon was sending data via a wireless link back to China. This link may be commonly used across the programme. Knowledge of the technical characteristics of this link may have allowed the US to locate and track other balloons. The US is sharing its newly acquired intelligence about the balloons with its allies, partners and friends. This will help others counter Chinese spy balloons over their countries.

An escalating trend

There are some implications for international relations.

First, the Chinese Communist Party doesn’t appear to mind irritating other countries. Much of what the spy balloons are

doing can just as easily be done by surveillance satellites, of which China has some 260 in orbit.

In contrast, the balloons are inherently provocative. The response from the Chinese Foreign Ministry and the party’s mouthpiece the Global Times has been to deny, obfuscate and confuse, complain about the US for shooting down the first balloon, and claim the US has sent many similar balloons into Chinese airspace.

Second, the great hopes that post-COVID China would shift from the wolfwarrior diplomacy of the past several years to become a more responsible member of the international community seem dashed. Instead, an escalating trend seems apparent, when considering other recent Chinese “grey zone” incidents . Looking forward, China seems set on “pushing the envelope” in a future where it is increasingly bellicose.

Bad signs for future crises

The balloon saga has also revealed that, in a crisis, China may be unable to adequately manage a fast-developing situation. The party apparatus may be good at implementing detailed long-range plans, but less adept at managing problems that arise quickly.

In this crisis, only the Americans seem actively involved; the statements from Beijing are at best pro forma, and certainly not meaningful interaction. US Defence Secretary Lloyd Aust in reportedly

called China on a dedicated, mutually agreed crisis line, but Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe declined to speak to him. This is a bad omen.

In a future US–China crisis only one side might be trying to manage the situation. The Chinese side might again freeze, with senior leaders playing the silent, nobody-home card.

The balloon saga continues helping to drive USChina relations downwards. China’s top leaders appear apathetic, while America’s hawks seem vindicated. It’s a win-win, as Xi Jinping always talks about, but not for the wider world.

Earthquake is due to Climate change!

Sir, Earthquakes are one of the many dangerous and destructive natural disasters that can occur anywhere in the world, and as the recent quakes in Turkey and Syria demonstrate, they are definitely cause for concern. To begin with, there is no link between weather and earthquakes. This makes sense because earthquakes occur underground, where surface temperature and conditions have no bearing. However, climate change has the potential to affect earthquakes. This is due to the fact that the only true variable in earthquakes is the amount of stress on a fault line. According to NASA, the most likely scenario is that climate change causes surface water to add to the stress on a fault. There are also droughts. Droughts, according to NASA researchers, can change the size of mountains due to water loss. In theory, this could result in a change in stress on faults. Other studies have found that groundwater extraction during droughts can affect stress by essentially changing the weight of the planet’s crust, which can cause changes between both sides of a fault line and causes an earthquake. Then there are glaciers, which move as well. Glacial earthquakes can occur as glaciers shift due to climate change. Therefore to reduce earthquakes lowering stress loads is very much essential. In other words, climate change could play a role in earthquakes.

India’s GDP likely to grow at 6.2% in FY24: Stanley

NEW DELHI, FEB 17

(AGENCIES): India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to grow at 6.2 per cent in FY24 as drivers of domestic demand remain intact amid fears of an impending slowdown, Morgan Stanley said in a research report released on Thursday.

According to Business Standard, the report said that as the economy fully reopened in 2022 leading to a cyclical recovery in consumption, pickup in private capex with healthy balance sheets in the private corporate and financial sector, and acceleration in government capital spending, the world’s fifth largest economy will breach the consensus GDP growth figure of 6 per cent.

“We believe that the key for sustained domestic demand is a pickup in capex, which will help create more jobs, thus leading to a virtuous cycle of more jobs leading to higher income, which will lead to higher

saving, resulting in higher investment”, the report notes.

Earlier, the Union Budget for FY24 had projected nominal GDP growth at 10.5 per cent, as the centre increased the capital investment outlay steeply for the third year in a row by 33 per cent to Rs 10 trillion. The Economic Survey for 2022-23 projected that India would witness a growth between 6-6.8 per cent in FY24, depending on the trajectory of economic and geo-political developments globally.

The report also mentioned that the incoming high-frequency data on

indicators like private consumption and investment reflected a moderation in the December quarter driven by base effect and shift in the festival calendar rather than a slowdown.

“Indeed, incoming data on high-frequency indicators have gained momentum both in YoY (year-on-year) and MoM (month-on-month) terms in January. The trend is thus encouraging after these indicators exhibited mixed signs, with some of them slowing in YoY terms in Q3 after peaking in Q2, driven by the impact of shift in festival dates on growth rates”, the report notes.

Naga issue to remain as govt’s top priority: Rio

(From p-1)

However, he said if that were to happen then the other stakeholders would complain and reject whatever had been brought.

He said such disunity was to blame for failure to bring about a solution that lay with everyone including politicians, NPGs alike.

Rio called for support from people since election was to take place and it was important to form a strong government that would be able to handle crucial impending issues.

He said NDPP-BJP alliance would come out victorious and that there was no confusion on who would form the next government.

He also said crucial matters like delimitation,

ENPO demand and ULB elections would be dealt with by the next 14th NLA and therefore, the people’s clear mandate was needed.

On coalition with BJP, Rio said although the former was a strong party, it however respected the sentiment of the people and therefore wanted NDPP as regional party to head the coalition government.

Rio said as committed in its manifesto, NDPP was giving priority to women and was working towards gender-equal society.

Earlier, Neiba Kronu planning minister, in his short speech, said that since election was a democratic process, Nagaland also had to face it or the President’s Rule could have been imposed.

He said the next 14th

(From p-1)

Stating that corruption is the enemy of development and good governance, he called for both the government and the people to come together to achieve this national objective.

Prof. Mukhi further exhorted all to continue strengthening the State to raise it to higher level.

He also thanked the legislators, head of departments and all the staff, for the support shown to him during his tenure.

Speaking on behalf of the state government, state chief secretary, J Alam, stated that Prof. Mukhi’s tenure of about one and half years may look relatively small, but in terms of impact on many key aspects of governance of the State, it has been very significant.

Alam said Prof. Mukhi’s wisdom, vast experience and knowledge of finance was instrumental in guiding the affairs of the State towards greater efficiency and effectiveness.

The chief secretary credited the governor for accelerating the pace of infra-

structure projects such as the four-lane Dimapur-Kohima road project, which he said had immensely benefitted from intense monitoring and regular review by the governor. He also said that the governor showed deep concern for the people living in border areas during his tour to various districts of the State.

Commissioner, Nagaland, T. Mhabemo Yanthan, who also spoke at the programme, said that he had the honour to work closely with the governor when he was the commissioner & secretary to the governor. He said that Prof. Mukhi during his tenure extensively toured the State and personally interacting with different sections of society. Yanthan said that Prof. Mukhi has been a strong advocate of self-reliance in agriculture, women empowerment, youth entrepreneurship and connectivity.

Later, the outgoing governor was accorded rashtriya salute by the Nagaland Police contingents at Assam Rifles Helipad, Kohima before his departure to Assam.

(From p-1) Speaking on the BJPNDPP alliance that successfully completed its five-year tenure, he said BJP, as a national party, was going strong under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Admitting that “Change is coming” was not fully successful, he cited Covid-19 pandemic as one reason why the alliance government could not fulfil the slogan.

Rio further informed the gathering that election to urban local bodies (ULBs)in the State would be held soon with 33% reservation for women and that Assembly and Lok Sabha seats would be increased after the delimitation exercise.

Referring to the NDPP manifesto, he assured that the party would emphasise on youth empowerment and sports.

Dwelling on the longpending Naga political issue, he remarked that Naga solution was still pending since Nagas were not united.

He said the State was unable to generate revenue from its natural resources

NLA would also continue to work hard for the Naga issue as the present coalition has been doing.

NDPP candidate, Kudecho Khamo, urged the people to work togethers bringing development in the constituency, which had been lagging in many areas.

Khamo said he had visions to work for the future of the children and youth.

The campaign programme was chaired by NDPP working president Nuzota Swuro, while invocation was offered by Chozuba Town Baptist Church pastor Vekusa Lohe.

Special number was presented by Chakhesang Cultural Research Centre, Chetheba and benediction was given by Chozuba Village Baptist Church pastor Vesavo Shijoh.

due to non-resolution of the Naga political issue.

On the encroachment issue on railway land which threatens the future development of Dimapur railway station into a world class station, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said the government plans to either evict encroachers from railway land for the railway station. If this cannot succeed, then he said the government would have to move out the railway station to another place for the convenience of passengers even though he did not specify where it will be shifted to.

He also said the problem of frequent floods in Dimapur could be solved, provided the public stopped obstructing drains, pointing out that the drains had become smaller that led to slower outflow of excess water, resulting in floods.

In his address, Longkumer thanked and acknowledged Rio for showing concern for him and participating in the rally as a star campaigner.

He also highlighted the works carried out by him with Local Area Development Programme (LADP)

fund during his tenure as an opposition MLA for nearly four-and-a-half years. He claimed that he tried his best to do everything he could do trough the fund.

Moatoshi also acknowledged Rio for granting sanction for road construction in his constituency.

He said he would focus on two areas – construction of roads in all colonies and eradication of problem faced by educated unemployed youth.

He informed Rio that the Kuda village ground would be turned into a stadium and sought his assistance in this regard.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Kuda village VDB secretary Vikeduo Linyu, invocation offered by BRC, Kuda Village, pastor and welcome address by Kuda village council chairman Vikie Nagi. Short speeches were also delivered by NDPP Dimapur region president Vihoshe Awomi, NDPP youth wing president Imchatotba, while vote of thanks was delivered by NDPP Dimapur region vice-president Hito Aye.

Congress ready for a debate with BJP on poll manifestoes: Jairam

(From p-1) asked the party its approach with regard to Nagaland vis-à-vis UCC. He reminded people that Congress was the only party that will protect and preserve the diversity, culture and religion of Nagaland, and the only party that can bring Nagaland back on the road to peace, harmony and development.

Jairam also mentioned that the past five years was a story of broken promises and accused BJP of not providing necessary impetus to development such as good roads, reliable electricity, adequate sports facilities, etc. He said time had come for people of Nagaland to recognise that they have been betrayed by the BJP and its ally NDPP. He

Sonowal, Rijiju campaign in Mon for BJP

(From p-1)

Rijiju said Paiwang has great prospects for the future and a person with high calibre like him should be given a chance to represent them once again.

Reminding that Tizit was home for BJP, Rijiju assured that the Konyak community would be fully backed by Centre for all round development. He therefore sought unstinted and re-elect Paiwang.Later, Rijiju also went to Longwa village to campaign for BJP candidate Konngam Konyak, who is contesting from 44 Phomching constituency.

said it was crucial for the people to repose trust and confidence in Congress and vote for its candidates. He assured that the party was in a position to provide governance to the people. He also said Congress was fielding young candidates for the Assembly election for the first time as the party was undergoing a process of transformation.

He appealed to the people to support these candidates. He announced that Congress would extend support to any civil society organisation that takes the initiative to conduct free and fair election.

NPCC president K

Therie also released a manifesto that included seven guarantees of Congress – old age pension of Rs3,000 per month

to senior citizens; 33% reservation for women in urban local bodies; establishing mini secretariat at Tuensang; 100% payment to labourers under MGNREGA scheme; loans for higher education at zero percent interest; clean drinking water and sanitation facilities for all urban and rural areas and compulsory sports training for youth after HSLC.

DAABPF objects to use of sacred phrase during...

(From p-1) during their election campaign that was utterly disgusting.

They explained “Hallelujah” was derived from two Hebrew words “Hallel” meaning praise and “Jah” or “Yah”, which was a short form of “Yahweh” (God), name of living God.

They pointed out that “Hallelujah” was a Hebrew liturgical expression that appeared in the Bible

several times.

The pointed out that the Christians used the expressions “Hallelujah!” and “Praise the Lord” as spontaneous expression of joy, thanksgiving and praise God. They insisted that this jubilatory phrase attributed in high reverence to living God could not be used for political goals.

They therefore strongly condemned BJP’s mockery towards the Christians and urged the party’s can-

didates and workers to refrain from their imprudent attempts to fool the general public by using religious songs and phrases.

Thousands of flights canceled as German airport staff strike

BERLIN, FEB 17 (AP): Thousands of flights to and from German airports were canceled Friday as workers walked out to press their demands for inflation-busting pay increases. The strikes at seven German airports, including Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg, affected almost 300,000 passengers and forced airlines to cancel more than 2,300 flights.

Christine Behle of the Verdi labor union told public broadcaster RBB-Inforadio that failure to reach a meaningful deal with employers on pay could result in a “summer of chaos” at German airports.

3 UFOs shot down not part of China’s balloon ops

WASHINGTON/

BEIJING, FEB 17 (AP/PTI): The three high-flying objects which were shot down over the American and Canadian airspace this month were not related to the Chinese spy balloon programme, but most likely tied to private companies, recreation, or research institutions, according to US President Joe Biden.

Biden said this in his speech at the White House on Thursday, his first one after a Chinese spy balloon was shot down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of South Carolina on February 4. Three other high-flying objects were shot down by American fighter jetstwo in the US and one in Canada.

Biden reiterated the view of US officials that the huge balloon, which traversed the country at an altitude of about 40,000ft before being blown out of the sky by a US fighter jet over

the Atlantic, was in fact used for spying.

“The US and Canadian military are seeking to recover the debris so they can learn more about these three objects. The intelligence community is still assessing all three incidences. They’re reported to him daily and will continue their urgent efforts to do so, and he will communicate that to the Congress,” Biden said.

“We don’t yet know exactly what these three objects were, but nothing right now suggests they were related to China’s spy

balloon programme or that they were surveillance vehicles from any other country,” he said.

“The intelligence community’s current assessment is that these three objects were most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation, or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research,” Biden said.

By shooting down the Chinese spy balloon, Biden said the US has sent “a clear message that the violation of our sovereignty was unacceptable. We’ll act to protect our country and we did.”

Biden said he expects to speak with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on the issue that has increased the tensions between the US and China.

“And I hope we are going to get to the bottom of this, but I make no apologies for taking down that balloon,” he added.

China on Friday sharply reacted to US President Joe Biden’s remarks defending his orders to shoot down a Chinese spy balloon and his assertion to “remain in communication” with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, saying that Washington cannot ask for talks while fuelling tensions and escalating the crisis.

By shooting down the Chinese spy balloon, Biden said the US has sent “a clear message that the violation of our sovereignty was unacceptable. We’ll act to protect our country and we did.”

Protests hit multiple Iran cities for first time in weeks Iranian president says China visit ‘successful’

DUBAI, FEB 17 (AP): Protesters in Iran marched through the streets of multiple cities overnight in the most widespread demonstration in weeks amid the monthslong unrest that’s gripped the Islamic Republic, online videos purported to show Friday.

The demonstrations, marking 40 days since Iran executed two men on charges related to the protests, show the continuing anger in the country. The protests, which began over the Sept. 16 death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini after her arrest by the country’s morality police, have morphed into one of the most serious challenges to Iran’s theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Videos showed demonstrations in Iran’s capital, Tehran, as well as in the cities of Arak, Isfahan, Izeh in Khuzestan province and Karaj, the group Human Rights Activists in Iran said. The Associated Press could not immediately verify the videos, many of which had

been blurred or showed grainy nighttime scenes.

In Iran’s western Kurdish regions, online videos shared by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights showed burning roadblocks in Sanandaj, which has seen repeated demonstrations since Amini’s death.

Hengaw shared one video that included digitally altered voices shouting: “Death to the Dictator!”

That call has been repeatedly heard in the demonstrations, targeting Iran’s 83-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Other videos purportedly shot in Tehran had similar chants, as well as scenes of heavily protected riot police in the street.

Protesters also marched in Iran’s Sistan and Baluchestan province near Pakistan after Friday prayers, online videos showed. Anti-government demonstrations have been happening for months as well on Fridays in the restive province, which is a majority Sunni region.

TEHRAN, FEB 17 (IANS):

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has described his state visit to China as “very successful and fruitful”.

Raisi made the remarks in an address to reporters upon arrival in Tehran from his Beijing visit on Thursday, according to the website of the Iranian president’s office, Xinhua News Agency reported. Noting that he held meetings with Chinese leaders, Raisi said the strategic level of the two countries’ communication had given a strategic aspect to bilateral talks so that the two countries could pursue the issues of common interest.

He said Iran’s foreign policy is to build trust in neighbors and economic convergence in Asia, emphasizing that “the trip to China was very important in order for Iran to play an effective role in the field of regional and global economic and commercial issues, because China is one of the world’s largest economies that plays an important role in the field of trade in Asia and the international stage.”

The Iranian president noted that another topic of the talks of this trip was related to the cooperation between Iran and China in international organisations.

Chinese counterpart Xi on the issue that has increased the tensions between the US and China.

“And I hope we are going to get to the bottom of this, but I make no apologies for taking down that balloon,” he said.

Responding to Biden’s remarks at a press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said he has no information on the likelihood of Biden-Xi talks as of now.

Wang said that “the unintended entry of Chinese airship into US airspace is an isolated unexpected event but it is also a test to the US sincerity and capability to properly manage crisis to stabilise relations with China and sincerity to improve relations with China”.

SEOUL, FEB 17 (AP):

North Korea threatened Friday to take “unprecedently” strong action against its rivals, soon after South Korea announced a series of planned military drills with the United States to hone their joint response to the North’s increasing nuclear threats. North Korea has halted weapons testing activities since its short-range missile firing on Jan. 1, though it launched more than 70 missiles in 2022 - a record number for a single year. Friday’s warning suggests the North’s testing could resume soon over its rivals’ military training, which it views as an invasion rehearsal.

“In case the U.S. and South Korea carry into practice their already announced plan for military drills that (North Korea), with just apprehension and reason, regards as preparations for an aggression war, they will

face unprecedentedly persistent and strong counteractions,” the North Korean Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by state media. The statement accused South Korea and the United States of planning more than 20 rounds of military drills, including their largest-ever field exercises. It called South Korea and the United States “the arch-criminals deliberately disrupting” regional peace and stability. “This predicts that the situation in the Korean Peninsula and the region will be again plunged into the grave vortex of escalating tension,” the statement said. It didn’t specify which U.S.-South Korean military trainings it was referring to. But North Korea has typically slammed all major regular military drills between Washington and Seoul as a practice to launch an invasion and responded with its own weapons tests.

Bruce Willis diagnosed with dementia due to aphasia

After Bruce Willis’ family announced in March 2022 that the 67-year-old actor had been diagnosed with aphasia and would retire from acting, his condition has now progressed into frontotemporal dementia. His family posted a statement on Thursday about Willis’ latest diagnosis, Variety reported.

“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces.

While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis,” his family wrote in a statement on the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration’s website. Rumer Willis also shared the news, along with a photo of her father, on Instagram. Frontotemporal dementia, which is often diagnosed at a younger age than other forms of dementia, is characterised by personality changes, speech difficulty and motor impairment. It’s the cause of 10 per cent to 20 per cent of all dementia diagnoses, according to the Mayo Clinic. Willis’ acting career began in the early 1980s with roles in films like ‘The Verdict’, ‘Blind Date’ and ‘Sunset’.

Women and Heart Attacks

For both men and women, heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United States. Still, there are key differences in how it develops, presents, and is addressed between the sexes.

Heart disease has a major impact on many women’s lives, but awareness about it has typically focused more on men than women.

Smaller Hearts and Blood Vessels

There are differences in male and female bodies that affect how heart disease develops. For example, women have smaller hearts and smaller blood vessels. This difference is significant because sometimes smaller vessels don’t show up well on an angiogram — a picture taken of the blood vessels of the heart — so signs of blockages can be missed in some women.

Women also tend to develop heart disease in the smaller blood vessels of the heart instead of the large coronary arteries commonly seen in men.

Risk Factors

Female reproductive health history and heart disease are closely related. Women with endometriosis were found to be three times more likely to develop some form of heart disease than women without it.

Women who develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy or preeclampsia, a complication of pregnancy that causes high blood pressure and places stress on the organs, may also have an increased risk for heart attacks.

Symptoms

Many of the “classic” heart attack symptoms — like crushing chest pain — are based on research done on men. Women may experience chest pain, but may also have flu-like symptoms including:

Nausea

Vomiting

Dizziness

Shortness of breath

However, almost two-thirds of women who die suddenly from heart disease had no prior symptoms.

Symptom-Mimicking Conditions

Women are more likely than men to develop several diseases that have symptoms similar to a heart attack, like chest pain and shortness of breath.

Coronary spasm. In this condition, a vessel that supplies blood to the heart clamps down. This temporarily constricts the blood flow, mimicking a heart attack.

Coronary dissection. This is when the wall of a coronary artery tears. Patients are frequently women who may not have any history of heart disease.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy. Also called broken syndrome, this is an inflammatory condition that causes the heart to enlarge after a period of emotional distress.

Some of these look-alike conditions can be less

More research is needed to determine why women are less frequently prescribed these guideline-recommended medicines.

Diagnostic Testing

The cardiac troponin test is a common tool used to determine if a heart attack has occurred. This test measures the levels of troponin — a protein that indicates the presence of damaged heart muscle — in the blood.

Medical providers are beginning to understand that women need a lower level of troponin in the blood to indicate a heart

attack. If providers are only going off the old standard that looked at results in men, women experiencing a heart attack could be told they are fine because their troponin wasn’t high enough.

Treatments

Women may need a different approach to treatment to get the best outcomes compared to men. For example, women have higher mortality rates for coronary artery bypass surgery, a type of open heart surgery that fixes blocked arteries in the heart. A more conservative approach to treatment may be more successful for some women.

Medical Bias Against Women

When being treated for a heart attack, women are more likely to experience medical bias.

There is evidence that physicians may be less aware of risk factors of heart disease in women and some women feel their concerns are not taken seriously.

PVL: Calicut Heroes stun Kolkata Thunderbolts

Grand Prix Badminton League to be held in a new avatar in Aug Sr Women’s hockey Nationals: Big wins for Odisha, MP and HP

BENGALURU, FEB 17

(IANS): The second season of the Grand Prix Badminton League (GPBL) will be held in a new avatar in August this year.

KAKINADA (AP), FEB 17

HYDERABAD, FEB 17

(IANS): Calicut Heroes stunned the defending champions Kolkata Thunderbolts in the second season of the Prime Volleyball League, picking a 15-14, 7-15, 15-11, 13-15, 15-13 win at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium, here.

Jerome Vinith was named the Player of the Match as Calicut completed a hat-trick of wins.

A triple-man block led by Jerome provided Calicut Heroes the early advantage. With Jose Antonio Sandoval’s threat looming, Kolkata skipper Ashwal Rai needed to be alert. Targetting Cody Caldwell from the service line, Calicut tried to prevent the Thunderbolts’ attacker to get a say. Spread-

ing the game wide, Jerome closed out Kolkata’s attacks and Calicut took control.

With Rahul’s magic from the service line, Ashwal and Vinit started making more impact. Calicut skipper Matt Hilling appeared puzzled and the defending champions found a way back into the match.

Kolkata started targetting Jerome with serves to keep the game wide, but it led to a few serve errors from the Thunderbolts. Mohan Ukkrapandian’s passes and Jerome’s attacking ensured Calicut remain in the contest.

As things began to get heated, Rahul began combining with setter Hariharan to begin the Thunderbolts’ resistance. Mohan became

an integral key to Calicut’s formula and he continued to set up Jerome for spikes. But Vinit’s fiery serves allowed Cody to get a say from the middle and the topsy-turvy battle went right down to the wire.

The game of fine margins eventually turned into a battle between Rahul’s attacks and Ashwin’s blocks. Hariharan started setting up Ashwal for spikes. But with powerful serves, Jerome turned the tables once again in the final minute of the match to help his team get a sensational win.

Ahmedabad Defenders will be up against Mumbai Meteors and Bengaluru Torpedoes will be up against Kochi Blue Spikers on Friday.

The first season which saw the top players from Karnataka with the teams mentored by the who-iswho of Indian badminton including PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth, Ashwini Ponappa, Sai Praneeth, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, HS Prannoy, Chirag Shetty and Jwala Gutta, will now add an international flavour along with top ranked Indian players in the second edition. Announcing the development, League Commissioner Prashanth Reddy said that the success of GPBL Season-1 was instrumental in elevating it to the National level.

“In the wake of Premier Badminton League (PBL) not being conducted over the past three years, GPBL is being elevated to a National level event.

We were preparing for the second season of GPBL and at the insistence of players and the team owners, we are going ahead with GPBL as a National event,” said Prashanth who is also the co-owner of Bengaluru Raptors, the defending champions of PBL while adding, “We are amplifying the efforts of BAI in helping the players to earn their livelihood from the sport. GPBL follows a completely different format and is more a made-for-television event

in an attempt to popularise the game of badminton in India while giving an opportunity for the aspiring players to earn decent monies.”

GPBL intends to increase the number of teams from eight to 10 and will have a pool of over 150 players including about 25 international players who will go under the hammer. “The idea is to give players from across India a chance to rub shoulders with the best players and build a platform for these players to acclimatise to the tougher competitions abroad,” said Prashanth.

Some of the top players too feel that such leagues go a long way in shaping the career of badminton players. “I feel that leagues such as GPBL not only give the players a platform to showcase their skills on an international forum but also help financially. We are in dire need of tournament exposure especially for those on the threshold of making their international debut,” said India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu.

Sai Praneeth, who was the only participant in the men’s singles during the last Olympics, feels that players should be allowed to choose the tournaments they wish to play.

2nd Test, Day 1: India bowl out Australia for 263

NEW DELHI, FEB 17

(IANS): India captain Rohit Sharma and his deputy

K.L. Rahul saw out the remaining nine overs to take the hosts to 21/0 in nine overs and trail Australia by 242 runs at stumps on day one of the second BorderGavaskar Trophy Test at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday.

Rohit and Rahul are not out on 13 and 4 respectively after senior pacer Mohammed Shami picked four wickets while the spin duo of off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each to bowl out Australia for 263 in the first innings.

For Australia, who elected to bat first after winning the toss, left-handed opener Usman Khawaja was precise in footwork and pristine in strokeplay to make 81, the first fifty by a visiting batter on the ongoing tour.

looked impressive in his 72 not out. But losing wickets in back-to-back fashion thrice may come to hurt them later on.

Rohit began by standing tall and punching past point off his Australian counterpart Pat Cummins in the opening over. Debutant Matthew Kuhnemann and Nathan Lyon found

some extra bounce and turn as Rohit and K.L.

Rahul were defending patiently. Rohit also got to overturn a ‘caught on forward short leg decision’ off Lyon on the stroke of stumps. Earlier, the final session began with Australia reaching 200 in 59.4 overs.

Rotterdam Open: Sinner stuns Tsitsipas to reach quarters; Rune retires mid-way

ROTTERDAM (NETHERLANDS), FEB 17

(IANS): Italy’s Jannik Sinner has claimed one of the biggest wins of his career, beating world no 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece to reach the quarterfinals of the Rotterdam Open ATP 500 tournament.

The 21-year-old Italian won 6-4, 6-3 against the Greek to end his fourmatch losing streak against Tsitsipas here on Thursday.

Sinner produced a dominating performance on his serve and won the match in one hour and 21 minutes after not facing a single break point against Tsitsipas and won 89 percent of his first serve points.

“It means a lot obviously. A lot of work behind. I’m very happy. I played some good tennis, very focussed today. Hopefully I can keep it going but for sure, Stef is an incredible player. I have a

Nathan Lyon was delightful in punching and driving off Shami. But the pacer had the last laugh, sending Lyon’s off-stump on a cartwheel ride. Jadeja had Handscomb caught on 67, but replays showed he overstepped and was called no-ball.

On the very next ball, Handscomb slog-swept Jadeja over deep square leg for a sumptuous boundary. In the next over, Shami brought Australia’s innings to a close by castling debutant Matthew Kuhnemann.

BRIEF SCORES: Australia 263 in 78.4 overs (Usman Khawaja 81, Peter Handscomb 72 not out; Mohammed Shami 4-60, Ravichandran Ashwin 3-57) lead India 21/0 in 9 overs (Rohit Sharma 13 not out) by 242 runs

GUWAHATI, FEB 17 (AGENCIES): By crushing NorthEast United FC 3-1 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium on Friday, Odisha FC reclaimed a playoff spot in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23.

Nandhakumar Sekar, Victor Rodriguez, and Diego Mauricio scored goals to give the Juggernauts three crucial points, putting them one point away from securing their first-ever postseason qualifying. Pedro Martin and Diego Mauricio started the game for Odisha FC up

forward. Although there was a clear intention to attack, NorthEast United FC got off to a stronger start and made more forward moves in the opening ten minutes. Odisha FC, at the other end of the field, eventually began pressing the NorthEast United FC defence.

In the first ten minutes of the second half, NorthEast United FC had a few chances. Aaron Evans’ header from a corner that was intended for the far post missed the mark. Later, as he noticed an opening at

the near post, Parthib Gogoi displayed outstanding awareness on the right flank. The kid tried his luck from close to the touchline, forcing Amrinder to reposition himself and palm the ball behind for a corner.

Just five minutes after the hour mark, Odisha FC built a two-goal lead. Crespo delivered a low ball to Rodriguez’s box from the right wing. Seven minutes after coming in, the replacement’s clever touch allowed him to avoid Evans and drive it beyond Bhattacharja. Laldanmawia Ralte fouled Crespo inside the box in the final 10 minutes, resulting in a penalty. To make it 3-0, Mauricio shot it clean down the middle. Wilmar Gil’s penalty-kick goal after Shubham Sarangi’s foul in the second minute of stoppage time cost Odisha FC their first clean sheet in eight games. On February 24, NorthEast United FC will play Chennaiyin FC at the Marina Arena to close out the regular season.

Barcelona, Man United play 2-2 thriller in Europa League

LONDON, FEB 17 (AP): Barcelona and Manchester United served up a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Europa League knockout playoffs that outranked anything seen in the Champions League this week.

The former European champions traded leads in a back-and-forth second half of their first-leg game at Camp Nou on Thursday.

lot of respect for him. He played incredible tennis this year already,” Sinner was quoted by the ATP Tour website.

The Italian will next meet Stan Wawrinka in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Swiss has not dropped a set in two Rotterdam matches.

In another match, Dutch wild card Gijs Brouwer moved past World No. 9 Holger Rune, when the Dane retired with a right-

wrist injury while trailing 4-6, 0-4. Through his second ATP Tour quarterfinal Brouwer is guaranteed a new career-high ATP Ranking on Monday.

The 26-year-old has soared 45 places to No. 115 in the Live Rankings this week and could break into the Top 100 with a quarterfinal win against countryman and fellow wild card Tallon Griekspoor.

Barcelona struck first in the 50th minute on defender Marcos Alonso’s header from a corner and levelled in the 76th when Raphinha’s cross from the right wing curled into the net untouched. United’s defense was distracted by Robert Lewandowski’s failed attempt to connect.

In between, Marcus Rashford showed just why Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández described him as one of the most dangerous forwards in Europe.

Rashford beat goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen at his near post with a shot from a tight angle in the 53rd then created United’s

go-ahead goal seven minutes later.

Receiving the ball at the touchline from a corner taken short, Rashford dribbled into the penalty area then fired a low cross that was flicked on by Bruno Fernandes and bounced up to ricochet into the net off defender Jules Koundé for an own goal.

United goalkeeper David de Gea preserved the lead with late saves, after ter Stegen’s best saves were in the first half to keep out

shots by Rashford and Wout Weghorst.

A game of 35 attempts on goal was watched by former United manager Alex Ferguson, now aged 81, in the stadium where his team won the 1999 Champions League final.

It sets up an enticing second leg at Old Trafford next Thursday with a place in the round of 16 at stake.

Barcelona has never won the second-tier European competition — never even reached the final in 52

years as the UEFA Cup then the Europa League — and its 13th attempt looks to be no easier.

A game between two former Champions League finalists saw Monaco captain Axel Disasi score with a long-range shot in stoppage time to seal a 3-2 win at Bayer Leverkusen.

Juventus was held 1-1 by Nantes, after leading in the 13th on Dušan Vlahovic’s goal, and seemed sure to be awarded a penalty for a handball in the fifth

minute of stoppage time. Instead, after a two-minute review and consulting the pitchside screen, Portuguese referee João Pinheiro awarded Nantes a free kick for a foul by the Juventus player Bremer.

Shakhtar Donetsk’s first competitive game of 2023 during the midwinter break for the Ukrainian league was a 2-1 win over Rennes in a “home” game played in neutral Warsaw. Shakhtar’s first game since selling star winger Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea saw his replacement on the left flank, Dmytro Kryskiv, open the scoring in the 11th minute. Sevilla, the record sixtime champion, eased to a 3-0 win over PSV Eindhoven, and Salzburg will take a 1-0 lead to Roma next week thanks to Nicolas Capaldo’s header in the 88th. Coach José Mourinho’s team almost leveled when Andrea Belotti’s header was pushed on to the crossbar by goalkeeper Philipp Köhn.

NEW

DELHI, FEB 17

(IANS): BCCI’s chief selector Chetan Sharma has resigned from his post following a sting operation conducted by a TV news channel, where he shared internal information about the team and selection process, sources told IANS.

According to sources, he sent his resignation to BCCI Secretary Jay Shah who accepted it.

Earlier, in a sting operation, the 57-year-old was heard saying that Indian players have their own doctors outside of cricket, who are always available for them. “If they are fit for only 85%... they tell us to let them play but medical science doesn’t clear them, this problem comes...the player wants to play, the player never refuses. But Like Bumrah, he was not even able to bow down then what will he do.. One or two such major injuries happen.

“Otherwise even at 80%, these people...they are such scoundrels, they will silently go to the corner and take an injection and say

that they are fit,” Sharma allegedly said during a sting operation.

The chief selector also reportedly revealed that there was a huge clash of ego between former Indian skipper Virat Kohli and former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, which eventually led to the right-hander batter’s ouster as the captain.

“When the player becomes a little big, he feels that he has become very big.. He has become bigger than the board. Then he feels that No one can do anything to him. He can’t even bend my hair. Without me, cricket will stop in India. Has it ever happened?

Many big ones came and went. Cricket remains the same. So, he tried to hit the President at that time,” he was quoted as saying.

“He (Virat) said... Sourav Ganguly had never said this to me (about reconsidering the captaincy role). So it became a big issue. Either the President lied, or Virat is telling the truth. It became a big issue... then there was an uproar.”
