Modi eager to solve Naga political issue: Nadda

KOHIMA, FEB 14 (NPN):
BJP national president JP
Nadda reiterated that with the Naga political issue now in its final stages, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was eager to secure solution to the decades-old Naga political issue.
Addressing the launching of the joint campaign rally of the BJP and NDPP at capital cultural hall here on Tuesday, Nadda also added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was also working tirelessly to resolve the Naga issue.
On ENPO issue, Nadda maintained that whatever commitment has been made during the negotiation with the Union Home Minister, “would be implemented in letter and spirit”.
Recalling that Nagaland in the past was known for bandhs, blockades, insurgency, abduction, targeted killings, etc., Nadda,
however, said Nagaland was now known for peace and development. He said the Centre has prioritised development in the Northeast, including Nagaland, in varied sectors-- law and order, education, health, road and communication, agriculture, railways, etc.
Nadda urged workers of both BJP and NDPP to enlighten the masses about the various development initiatives taken up by the Central and State governments and ensure voters took a conscious decision on
whom to vote in the forthcoming Assembly election.
He assured BJP’s full support not only during election, but after election to build a strong Nagaland with the support of party’s central leadership. “Election and voting should not be decided on flimsy grounds. But it needs very serious deliberation to come to a conclusion about who should take up the reins of power,” Nadda said.
Also speaking on the occasion, Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio thanked BJP central leader-

ship led by Modi, Shah and Nadda for reposing their faith in his leadership and ensuring a firm coalition between NDPP and BJP.
He asserted that the 40-20 partnership was based on trust and the agenda was development and peace. He said NDPP-BJP alliance’s main concern was resolution of the Naga political issue as Nagas were crying for peace and yearning for a solution at the earliest.
He claimed that though the solution had evaded yet the State government had put in much efforts in its role as a facilitator of the peace process. He appreciated the Modi government for signing the Framework Agreement and Agreed Position, relaxing AFSPA in select areas, resolving Eastern Nagaland issue and the all-round development initiative, all of which were well received by the masses.
Rio also mentioned that he had appealed to Cen-

tre for taking up some major development projects in the State. He also expressed the hope that all these would be included in Common Minimum Programme to be launched in the next few days. He stated that NDPPBJP alliance was on a strong ground and exuded confidence that the two parties would be re-elected to power. Rio disclosed, that as per his assessment the NDPP-BJP alliance would win over 40 seats and form the next government. He also emphasised that there should not be any confusion and misunderstanding between the two parties as they were not contesting against each other and that party workers of each party would support either BJP or NDPP candidates.
“The instructions are clear and the message is firm, We are together as one,” he declared.

KOHIMA, FEB 14 (NPN):
A day after Supreme Court had directed State Election Commission to notify local body elections and place before it the official notification by March 14, 2023, chief minister Neiphiu Rio said the State government would announce dates for elections to urban local bodies (ULB) by March with 33% women reservation. He disclosed this while addressing a gathering to kick off the election campaign of NDPP candidate Dr Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire, who is contesting from 9th Kohima Town Assembly constituency (AC), at PWD Junction here on Tuesday.
Rio reminded that if local body elections are not held, the Centre would not provide grants and also said
that those areas opposed to reservation may be left out when grants were disbursed.
Further, noting that the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly would have to decide on crucial issues, he noted that a strong government was needed in the State. Rio lamented that Nagaland was lagging behind other States even in the Northeast because of the vexed Naga issue and stressed that if the State wanted to develop, there should be peace in the land.
He claimed that Nagaland had witnessed a steady development and was now ranked as the best State in law and order for past three years in a row.
He mentioned that the State was also attracting investors and visitors alike, and had also been selected as a host for a G20 event which was scheduled in the first week of April. He revealed that close to 1,000 VVIPs were expected to attend the event. Rio also spoke on the delimitation exercise, following which Assembly and Parliamentary seats would increase in the State. On the seat sharing formula, he acknowledged that BJP had showed respect to the people by choosing to be the junior partner of the alliance and given the larger share to NDPP.

Home minister Lalchamliana moved the resolution which said “That this House unanimously resolved to oppose any steps taken or proposed to be taken for enactment of UCC in India.”
While moving the resolution Lalchamliana that the UCC, if enacted, “would disintegrate the country as it was an attempt to terminate the religious or social practices, customary laws, cultures and traditions of the religious minorities, including the Mizos.”
He alleged that several attempts had been made in the past to implement the UCC but is pending till now due to its “controversial nature.”

IMPHAL, FEB 14: Thousands of doctors across Manipur went on strike on Tuesday to press the state government to address their four-point charter of demands, leaving services in many government-run health facilities paralyzed.
Remote areas of hills and valley were the worst hit by the strike with almost all the community health centres (CHCs) and Primary health centres (PHCs) remaining closed for the day.
With no doctors on duty, other staff including nurses were also not seen in the healthcare centres.
The doctors under the state health services commenced the indefinite shut-
a private member bill to enact the UCC was introduced by a BJP MP in the Rajya Sabha, he said.
“The proposed law is pending for enactment in parliament. The propose law aims at imposing a uniform code in the country by marginalising or terminating the religious or social practices, customary laws, cultures and traditions of the minorities,” Lalchamliana said.
“Although Mizoram has a special provision to protect its social or religious practices, customary laws and procedures un -
der Article 371 G, implementation of the UCC is not healthy for India as a whole,” he added.
Article 371G of the constitution states that no act of Parliament in respect of religious or social practices of the Mizos, Mizo customary law and procedure, administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Mizo customary law, ownership and transfer of land, shall apply to Mizoram unless the state legislature by a resolution so decides.
Lalchamliana also alleged that the BJP in 2018-19 had included the implementation of UCC in its election manifesto.
Chief minister Zoramthanga, opposition Congress leader Zodintluanga, Zo People’s Legislature Party leader Lalduhoma, lone BJP legislator BD Chakma and ruling MNF member C Lalmuanpuia participated in the discussion on the resolution.

SANTIRBAZAR (TRIPURA), FEB 14 (PTI): Former Tripura chief minister and CPI(M) leader Manik Sarkar claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become “restless over the Left-Congress alliance” in the poll-bound state.
Alleging that the BJPled government is “not following the Constitution” and has “murdered democracy” in Tripura, he said that the two rivals – the Left and the Congress- have joined hands to end “fascist” rule in the state. His comment comes after PM Modi had on February 11 lashed out at the Congress-CPI(M) alliance in Tripura during an
election rally and said the two parties have strangely chosen ‘dosti’ (friendship) in the northeastern state as against their normal ‘kushti’ (wrestling) in Kerala.
“You have mentioned that two parties, which are fighting each other in a state (Kerala), have become friends here. It is true that a CPI(M)-led front is running a government in Kerala where the Congress is sitting on the opposition bench. But democracy is vibrant there, which is missing in Tripura. The BJP is not following the Constitution here and a fascist rule is going on,” Sarkar said at an election rally in South Tripura’s Santirbazar
on Monday. The veteran CPI(M) leader also said, “It appears that the PM has become restless over the Left-Congress alliance... Democracy has been murdered in the northeastern state and the BJP is not following the Constitution here during the past five years of its rule. All these are happening at your behest.”
Claiming that the BJP’s tribal and non-tribal vote bank has “gone down drastically in the poll-bound state”, Sarkar said the electoral understanding between the Left and the Congress will avoid division of anti-BJP votes, which has “left the saffron camp worry”.
“The PM has toured the state twice for the ongoing campaign for the elections but he avoided to mention about the implementation of the vision document unveiled before the 2018 assembly elections. Modi remains silent on the promises during his campaign in the poll-bound state,” he said.
down strike from Tuesday under the aegis of the All Manipur Health Services Doctors’ Association (AMHSDA). The AMHSDA has over 3000 members as almost all the doctors at government-run hospitals and healthcare centres including district hospitals are members of the association.
The doctors’ protest was sparked by the alleged adamant attitude of the state government towards fulfilling their long pending demands.
The doctors were demanding time bound/time scale promotion, extension of superannuation age of doctors to 65 years as administrative post, NPA as per 7th Central Pay Com-
mission with effect from January 1, 2016 and major amendment of the outdated MHS rules 1982.
The AMHSDA launched the indefinite shutdown strike while resuming their suspended strike. The doctors were on strike since the last week of October last and they had suspended the strike in the middle week of November after a talk with the government on November 14.
While announcing the resumption of the strike, AMHSDA recently served an ultimatum to close down all medical health services in district hospitals and other health centres indefinitely if there is no positive response from the government side on or before February 13.
14 (PTI): The Assam government on Tuesday began clearing nearly 1,900 hectares of forest and government land in Sonitpur district, affecting 12,000-odd people who were allegedly staying there illegally for decades, a senior official said.
In the fourth such drive in two months, the Sonitpur district administration started the exercise under heavy security to clear “encroached” land in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS) and nearby revenue villages on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra river in central Assam.
While most of the occupants, predominantly Bengali-speaking Muslims, had left their houses after receiving notices in the last few weeks, some were in
the process to vacate their premises when the eviction drive started, some of the affected families said.
Asserting that they were never told by anyone that the areas they were living in fell under forest or government land, the “encroachers” claimed they re-
ceived benefits from various state and central schemes.
The opposition Congress slammed the BJPled government over the eviction drive, claiming that many of the affected families are entitled to have land rights as per the Forest Rights Act, 2006.
Sonitpur Deputy Commissioner Deba Kumar Mishra told PTI that thousands of people “illegally occupied” the forest and nearby areas for decades and the administration has decided to clear 1,892 hectares during the ongoing exercise till Thursday.
“Out of this, 1,401 hectares fall under the BWS and the remaining 491 hectares is government land. In the forest, 1,758 families were living, comprising 6,965 people,” he said. According to the latest survey, 755 families comprising 4,645 people were residing on the government land, the official said, adding that the exercise has been peaceful so far and there is no opposition.
Mishra said, “We discovered that this area was

Government schools, Anganwadi centres, mosques and other structures were built by people who thought it is Nagaon district.” The schools and other government institutions will be attached to nearby such centres in non-encroached land in the coming days so that education and welfare measures are not affected, he added. Over 1,700 personnel from Assam Police and CRPF along with people from civil administration and forest department are engaged in the exercise. Around 100 bulldozers, excavators and tractors were used to demolish the structures and clear the land, the DC said.

India has not publicly criticised Russia for its military action in Ukraine, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told Russian

Allegations against Adani point finger at
CHENNAI, FEB 14 (PTI):
The allegations against the Adani group are direct accusations against the BJP government and hence a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe should be ordered by the Centre and the matter must be debated in Parliament, DMK president and Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin said here on Tuesday. The questions posed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Parliament
on the issue are pertinent and it is shocking that Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not even utter a word as his answer, he said. Answering questions in his ‘Ungalil Oruvan’ (One among you) series, Stalin said expunction of parts of remarks made by Gandhi and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge in the Parliament went against the traditions of Parliamentary democracy. Expunging remarks made in Parliament cannot erase the matter from the people’s hearts, he said. “Today we pay homage to the 40 CRPF Martyrs who died because of the blatant Intelligence Failure in Pulwama. I hope all the Martyred Families have been suitably rehabilitated,” Singh tweeted. Chouhan accused him of speaking Pakistan’s language. “I think Digvijay ji’s intelligence has failed, it is his failure. He insults the

Mother-child self-immolation: Oppn attacks govt
KANPUR (UP), FEB 14
(PTI): A day after a motherdaughter duo died allegedly due to self-immolation during an anti-encroachment drive in Kanpur Dehat, police on Tuesday booked 39 people including a sub-divisional magistrate, four revenue officials and over a dozen cops on murder and other charges.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Maitha) Gyaneshwar Prasad has also been placed under suspension, said Inspector General of Police (Kanpur Range) Prashant Kumar.
Lekhpal Ashok Singh and bulldozer driver Deepak have been arrested so far, Superintendent of Police (Kanpur Dehat) BBGTS Murthy said. The FIR has been registered on charges of murder, attempt to murder apart from mischief by killing or maim-
ing cattle, mischief by fire with intent to destroy house, etc and intentional insult, Kumar told PTI over the phone.
He added that the bulldozer which was used in the demolition of the victims’ house has been seized.
Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak spoke to the bereaved family members, who were refusing to hand over the bodies for post-mortem, and assured them that their demands will be looked into. The bodies were later handed over for autopsy. Heavy police deployment has been made in and around the village as tension prevailed after the deaths.
The family and the villagers were earlier demanding that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should speak to them. They also sought ex-gratia of Rs 5
crore and a government job to at least two members of the bereaved family, according to the IGP Kumar.
While talking to the victim’s sons Shivam and Ansh, Deputy CM Pathak said, “This is a very tragic and saddening incident... An FIR has been registered on murder charges against the accused. Strict action will be initiated and the guilty will be punished. Their generations will remember it.”
“You are all like my family members. I and the entire government are with you.”
Pathak said adding that their demands will be looked into.

Digvijaya Singhcountry’s Army and speaks the language of Pakistan. He tries to demoralise the Army,” Chouhan told reporters.
Seeking a response from Congress leaders Sonia and Rahul on the issue, Chouhan said an investigation is needed to find out “who sowed the seeds in Singh’s mind that made him speak against the country and the Army.”
“Congress’s DNA should be examined as the party talks about uniting India but marches with those who talk about breaking India,” the BJP leader further said.
It was surprising that a Congress leader had been constantly questioning the bravery and patriotism of the Army and speaking the language of Pakistan, he said.
Reacting to Chouhan’s barbs, Singh told reporters, “Can I not pay homage to the army personnel? Can I not ask the government what our intelligence agencies were doing? I am not asking the army but asking the centre.”
On Chouhan’s swipes linking him with Pakistan, the Congress leader said the BJP government had arrested some officebearers of the party’s IT cell and Bajrang Dal on the charges of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI.
“What happened to your (Shivraj Singh’s) patriotism then? Why were they not booked for treason? They are now out on bail,” he said.

“The order comprises 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s and 10 Boeing 777-9s wide-body aircraft, as well as 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft. tional,” the airline said in a statement.
According to Air India, the first of the new aircraft will enter service in late 2023 and the bulk of the planes are to arrive from mid-2025 onwards.
“In the interim, Air India has already started taking delivery of 11 leased B777 and 25 A320 aircraft to accelerate its fleet and network expansion,” it said.
Sources said the total deal value is estimated to be at USD 80 billion.
Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the airline is on a large transformation journey across safety, customer service, technology, engineering, network and human resources.
Politics of acrimony
It is not unusual to witness acrimony between the government and the opposition in parliament, where protest around the aisle and sit-in demonstrations outside the house have become normal. In the run up to the budget session , the same situation was foreseen when opposition members made it clear that the government has much to answer for the allegations made against the Adani group after report by the US-based Hindinburgh Research surfaced in the media. Later when parliament met Opposition members in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabhja moved adjournment motions to discuss the issue as they alleged that public financial institutions such as the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) had become vulnerable because of their exposure to the Adani group. It may be recalled that following the report of the Hindinburgh Research it was claimed, that the Adani group was involved in stock manipulation, accounting fraud and money laundering. As a result, Adani’s stock prices plummeted resulting in losses of more than $100 billion or Rs.10 lakh crore and the group had to cancel a further share sale. Opposition members had persisted with their demand for a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee(JPC) into allegations of fraud against the Adani Group made by U.S.based short-seller Hindenburg Research. When parliament discussed the issue, Rahul Gandhi went hammer and tong over alleged link between Gautum Adani, chairman of the Adani group and prime minister Narendra Modi. Rahul waved a photograph that shoed Adani and Modi in a very relaxed atmosphere. It clearly inferred that the meteoric rise of the Adani group was because of the chairman’s close proximity with the prime minister. The same debate went on in the Rajya Sabha where the leader of the opposition Mallikarjun Kharge of the Congress also demanded an explanation from the government on why it remained mute. Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla expunged all remarks in which Rahul Gandhi expressed curiosity or spoke about the prime minister’s alleged links and long-lasting relationship with Gautam Adani. Thus when it was time for the leader of the house to respond to opposition over the President’s address, the expunged portions were not mentioned. This gave a leeway for the prime minister to not speak of the most serious allegations levelled against him by the opposition. As the remarks of both Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha and Mallikarjun Kharge in the Rajya Sabha including TMC member Mahua Moitra were expunged by the respective presiding officers. Kharge’s remarks that the chairperson of Rajya Sabha was under pressure from the government to not allow a JPC probe was expunged. The Congress’s continued protests against the expunging of remarks made by party president Mallikarjun Kharge and MP Rahul Gandhi highlight a new tension between the Opposition and the government over expunged statements- a process that has not come in for criticism earlier. Congress spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Singhvi accused the BJP of not running Parliament through “consensus, collaboration and concordance”, but through “clash, chaos, and conflict”. Both houses have been adjourned till March 13 and hopefully better sense will prevail and in this, the ruling BJP has to remember that it is not in opposition but in the government. And the role of a ruling party is a different from that of an opposition which are ingredients of a constitutional democracy.
DailyDevotion The Discipline of Hearing
Whatever I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. — Matthew 10:27
Sometimes God puts us through the experience and discipline of darkness to teach us to hear and obey Him. Song birds are taught to sing in the dark, and God puts us into “the shadow of His hand” until we learn to hear Him (Isaiah 49:2). “Whatever I tell you in the dark…” — pay attention when God puts you into darkness, and keep your mouth closed while you are there. Are you in the dark right now in your circumstances, or in your life with God? If so, then remain quiet. If you open your mouth in the dark, you will speak while in the wrong mood— darkness is the time to listen. Don’t talk to other people about it; don’t read books to find out the reason for the darkness; just listen and obey. If you talk to other people, you cannot hear what God is saying. When you are in the dark, listen, and God will give you a very precious message for someone else once you are back in the light.
After every time of darkness, we should experience a mixture of delight and humiliation. If there is only delight, I question whether we have really heard God at all. We should experience delight for having heard God speak, but mostly humiliation for having taken so long to hear Him! Then we will exclaim, “How slow I have been to listen and understand what God has been telling me!” And yet God has been saying it for days and even weeks. But once you hear Him, He gives you the gift of humiliation, which brings a softness of heart— a gift that will always cause you to listen to God now.

The benchmark of governance & the need of continuity
Democracy, by it’s very nature, is argumentative and competitive. Liberal democracies as in India, with constitutionally guaranteed free speech, an independent judiciary and a vibrant civil society are even more competitive for everyone is afforded the same opportunity to fearlessly pitch their ideas. In a state like Nagaland, comprising of atleast seventeen tribes with different languages, cultures, traditions and geography, one can visualize the complexity and the nearimpossibility of any single idea or thought holding centrestage for a sustained period of time. And yet, one such thought - the ‘idea of Rio’ - has held sway for the last two decades. It is actually not the ‘idea of Rio’ but the ‘idea by Rio’ that have transformatively refashioned and redefined Nagaland for the better in the 21st century. Since attaining statehood in 1963,
politics in Nagaland can now be broadly divided into two phases - politics before Rio became CM and politics after Rio became CM. What could be the reasons for this sustained mass popularity of Rio that cuts across tribes, gender, region, demography and age? Is it because of Rio’s unmatched execution abilities when faced with complex governance challenges that make him stand out? Is it his emphasis on participative governance that makes him connect with the people at a plane which other politicians just cannot bent to reach? Is it because he kept looking for ways to rid Naga politics of tactics and quickfix strategies merely to win elections?
It is difficult to completely define and capture the work of Rio in the last 20 years and then answer the question why the Rio phenomenon works. But one thing is crystal clear. Politics is a science that
From the first imposed sanctions against Myanmar in 1997, the United States takes a historical stride by passing the Burma Act 2021 as a law before 2022 ended. President Biden signed the act into a law on 23rd December which has been passed by both, the house and senate. The bill which originally was a response to the military coup in Myanmar on February 2021, the initial version of it got rejected in the senate back then.
Myanmar has been listed as a “country of particular concern (CPC)” under U.S. policy. The Southeast Asian nation’s infamous reputation is a result of its history of violating human rights and religious freedom. As Myanmar transitioned gradually to democracy under the leadership of Aung San Su Kyi, such “concerns” began to see a new beginning. But in February of 2021, the military imprisoned the state counselor Su Kyi, overthrew the elected government NLD, and seized control of the country, reversing the hard-won progress. The Burma Act is an acknowledgment of the bravery of Myanmar’s people, who have
needs understanding and insight into the psyche of the common man. Rio understood that elections are not merely the outcome of politics but are a part of social science. “Sabka Sath, Sabka vikas” (Together, for everyone’s growth, with everyone’s trust) is BJP’s motto. In Nagaland, however, it is not the BJP, but Rio who has very successfully implemented “Sabka sath, Sabka vikas” by deeds and not by words.
This has completely changed the governance paradigm in Nagaland and has, for the first time, built an implicit trust between the people and the state government. People of Nagaland have already come to know that, however hard the challenge is, Rio will work with the best intent and resolve it. Such trust, in intent and action, differentiates a leader from the rest.
This writer can confidently state that the evolution of Rio happened during
his tenure as Home Minister in the Jamir ministry and where he understood that the major casuality of insurgency in Nagaland had been ‘good governance’ especially in the remote rural areas, leading to weakening of the traditional village authorities as well as the writ of the state. Hence, after becoming CM, Rio prioritised good governance through ‘involvement and empowerment’ of the village communities which had been weakened by long years of insurgency situations and by the actions and omissions of successive governments. Village communities were economically empowered and, for the first time, tasted the actual real sense of ownership and participation in the developmental processes that affected or benefitted them.
The real game changer of an idea for village community empowerment was the innovative scheme known as ‘Communisation’
whereby the management and maintenance of village level public services and institutions were transferred to the village level communities constituted for the purpose, along with the required funds.
Another transformative idea by Rio was the observance of two consecutive years of 2004 and 2005 as the years of youth empowerment, during which several measures to engage and empower youths were initiated.
Thousands of youths were sent for various vocation related training courses to make them entrepreneurs, or prepare them for employment in the private sectors. Thousands of youths found self-employment, or employment in the private sectors, both inside and outside the state and also abroad.
The two years of ‘youth empowerment’ for the first time ever, broadened the horizon of the youths and served as the launching
Challenges and prospects for Burma Act
been rebelling against the military’s repression, quitting their jobs, and taking the fight to the streets for nearly two years since then and could prove to be a game changer for them.
Answer to Junta’s intransigence
The United States has traditionally maintained a “democracy first” approach in its involvement with Myanmar, and the newly enacted legislation provides the Biden administration with three prospects for advancing the restoration of democracy in Myanmar. First, the act permits the United States to provide assistance and communicate directly with anti-junta groups such as NUG, the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, PDF, and EAOs. Potential consultations with EAOs are very necessary, as their altercations with the military and democratic institutions have been superficial at best, and the US has overlooked them all along; without their involvement, the speech for ethnic reconciliation in the Burma act will remain rhetorical.
Under the act, $450 million will be provided in financial aid
Nagaland gears up for 14th NLA Election
As all are aware, Nagaland is gearing up to elect its leaders for the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly which is scheduled to be held on February 27, 2023. I, as a leader of a Christian churches’ organization feel that it is my moral duty to send out a clear and loud message reaching out to the hearts of all believers and to encourage the Christian stalwarts to participate actively and prayerfully in choosing our leaders. My intentions here are solely to encourage all believers to exercise their given fundamental right without losing one’s credibility and without infringing the secular fabric of the nation. Exercising the franchise is not only our right but also our duty as citizens, as guaranteed by the constitution of this diverse and beautiful nation.
While encouraging active participation, I also hope and spread precautions to every Christian to refrain from immoral activities.
Voting for money, indulgence in alcoholism, spreading false propaganda to woo voters, provoking and affecting peace and harmony in the society, booth rigging, proxy voting etc. These are not only against the law but also unethical from the viewpoint of Christian teaching. I would also like to remind readers that the very essence of India was founded on the principle of unity in diversity. In that, respect for every community irrespective of caste, creed, and religion draws the strength of India.
Reiterating on these principles, I encourage every sensible Christian
to choose your leader wisely.
Today, modern India is facing many forces that play beneath the slogan of development and better futures of our society. While slogans for development and a better future of society is embraced, we are encouraged to be critical and sensitive towards any political party whose agendas are exclusively entangled with a particular religion. Their subversive fanatical stance challenges in altering cultural and social ideologies against any tendency that opposes their exclusive claims overlooking the contemporary Secular Society and refusing to embrace one another fully in harmony.
At this juncture, let one and all be reminded that Nagaland is a Christian majority state and if not for all, the majority of the leaders are Christian. Hence people, choose leaders who walk the talk as Christians and who can courageously voice on your behalf for justice and protection of the minorities from all sorts of atrocities in the hands of majorities.
It is high time for the Nagas to take a proactive approach to elect leaders whose agendas are for mutual faith relationships considering religions as a dynamic and creati ve agent in affecting Nation Building without infringing the rights and privileges of the minorities. Striving toward the fullness of the whole human race, and eradicating hegemonic ideology, injustice, and divisions should be the calling and destiny of every conscious person.
Rev Dr. Mar Pongener, Executive Secretary, ABAM, Impurto help with humanitarian needs, sustain the civil disobedience movement, protect the political prisoners, support activists, media, and military defectors along with financial support to the civil society organizations in Myanmar who have been essential in the pro-democracy movement reaching the pleas of people of Myanmar to the international stage.
Second, the law mandates the administration to impose sanctions on senior army officials and any entity, stateowned commercial businesses, and individuals linked with the junta’s economic backing within six months. This will place enormous pressure on the Junta, which has repeatedly demonstrated its economic ineptitude in dealing with financial crises.
Lastly, the legislation has also taken account of the Rohingya issue, US has to facilitate international justice mechanisms to hold the military accountable for their campaign of 2017 against the Rohingya people. Humanitarian assistance has been ensured for the Rohingya refugees even prior to the act as
in 2021, $205 million has been provided for the community.
Is it enough?
The Burma Act is packed with optimism and assurances, but whether it will hold water or not, is a discussion that will fuel itself in the coming times. Although an honest attempt, it does have its flaws. Most sanction measures are discretionary, not mandatory which is a letdown at a moment when the civilians are preparing for a spring revolution against the military. Even the most anticipated sanction measures against Myanmar’s state-owned oil and gas company, MOGE, haven’t also been finalized stating that such action needs reports of cost and benefit when cutting it out would have been a huge blow to the regime as it’s their main financial asset. The fact that US oil conglomerate Chevron is involved with MOGE’s operations in a particular gas field, Yadana, doesn’t help US cause. Leaving Junta’s dominant hand free, it will be hard for any other measures to free Myanmar from Junta’s claws. The act also posits to provide “non-lethal” aid to the
pad for the government to persue more vigorously the policy of opening doors and empowering the youths.
Since the year 2003 when Rio became the CM for the first time, the ‘Rio juggernaut ‘has rolled on, fuelled by the deep gratitude of the people having realized that everything that Rio endeavoured eventually was for the greater good of the people of Nagaland. People of Nagaland today, more than at any other time, is grateful and confident in the ‘idea of Rio’ as the benchmark of governance and it’s continuity as a new chapter in the book of the progress and growth of Nagaland.
Ultimately, the finest barometer of leadership is the ability to create lasting change, usher in transformation that will resonate for generations and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio’s works and efforts are a gold standard against this metric.
Benito Z Swuanti-junta movement meaning no support of arms and weaponry. But when countries like China and Russia are supplying Junta with weapons, a more robust policy to support the training of the soldiers could have been expected. Although US has also called for a denunciation of China and Russia’s cooperation with Myanmar through the UN, in light of the current situation in Ukraine, such a demand is unlikely to amount to anything. It’s also frustrating that in comparison with Ukraine, the aid to Myanmar is totally peanuts.
The US efforts for Myanmar’s freedom ask for more in the existing context where countries like China, Russia, India, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam are cutting US strategy to isolate the Junta. To avoid another case of Iraq, the USA needs a more coherent implementation strategy for Burma act if it really wants to get above the geopolitics and aid the people of Myanmar in their fight to reconstitute democracy. IT dept surveys BBC offices; BJP, Oppn lock horns
NEW DELHI, FEB 14
(PTI): The Income Tax department on Tuesday conducted survey operations for over ten hours at the BBC’s offices in Delhi, Mumbai and two other linked locations as part of an investigation into alleged tax evasion, officials said.
The action, which sparked a sharp political debate with the ruling BJP accusing the BBC of “venomous reporting” and the opposition questioning the timing of the move, comes weeks after the broadcaster aired a two-part documentary, “India: The Modi Question”, on the prime minister and the 2002 Gujarat riots.
The survey is being carried out to investigate issues related to international taxation and transfer pricing of BBC subsidiary companies, officials said. BBC had been served notices in the past but was “defiant and non-compliant” and had significantly diverted its profits, they alleged.
The department is looking at documents related to the business operations of the London-headquartered broadcaster and its Indian arms, they said.
The BBC said it is fully cooperating with tax authorities. “The Income Tax authorities are currently at the offices in New Delhi and Mumbai and we are fully cooperating. We hope to have this situation resolved as soon as possible,” the press office of the BBC said on Twitter.
Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said no one is above the law and the Income Tax department will share details about the survey after it is over.
The synchronised surprise action began at 11 am with Income Tax officials reaching the BBC offices in Delhi, Mumbai, Gurugram and one another premises
and the operation continued till late evening. BBC staffers were asked to keep their phones at a particular spot inside the premises and cooperate, officials said. Besides, some computers were seized and mobile phones of some staff members were cloned, officials said.
According to I-T rules, transfer pricing “generally refers to prices of transactions between associated enterprises which may take place under conditions differing from those taking place between independent enterprises. It refers to the value attached to transfers of goods, services and technology between related entities’’. It also refers to the value attached to transfers

As news spread, curious onlookers and media crews gathered outside the BBC office at central Delhi’s Kasturba Gandhi Marg.
In Mumbai, the office is in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex.
As part of a survey, the Income Tax department only covers the business premises of a company and does not raid residences and other locations of its promoters or directors.
The Supreme Court last week dismissed a plea seeking the imposition of a complete ban on the BBC in India in the wake of the controversial documentary, terming the petition “entirely misconceived” and “absolutely meritless”.
On January 21, the government issued directions to block multiple YouTube videos and Twitter posts sharing links to the documentary.
The Editors Guild of India said it was “deeply concerned” about the Income Tax surveys and termed it a continuation of a “trend” of using gov-
Adani row: Congress leader moves SC; seeks probe
NEW DELHI, FEB 14
(PTI): A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking investigation under the supervision of a sitting apex court judge against the Adani Group of companies in light of the allegations made by the US-based Hindenburg Research.
The plea, filed by Congress leader Jaya Thakur, has also sought a direction for investigating the role of the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the State Bank of India (SBI) in investing huge amounts of public money in the follow on public offer of Adani Enterprises, allegedly at a much higher rate than the prevailing share price in the secondary market.
A follow on public offer is a process by which a company already listed on a stock exchange issues new shares to the investors
or shareholders, usually the promoters.
On Monday, the Centre had agreed to the apex court’s proposal to set up a panel of experts to look into strengthening the regulatory mechanisms for the stock market following the recent Adani group shares crash triggered by Hindenburg Research’s fraud allegations.
The top court is seized of two petitions alleging exploitation of innocent investors and “artificial crashing” of the Adani Group’s stock value.
Delhi man murders girlfriend; Stuffs body in dhaba’s fridge
Adani Group stocks have taken a beating on the bourses after the Hindenburg Research made a litany of allegations, including those of fraudulent transactions and share price manipulation, against the business conglomerate.
The Adani Group has dismissed the charges as lies, saying it complies with all laws and disclosure requirements
In her plea, Thakur has alleged, “The Hindenburg report has raised serious question about act and conduct of respon -
dent no.13 (Adani Group of companies) and their associates, by which they have caused huge losses to the various public sectors bank and LIC by inflating the share price of shares of their group of company for obtaining loans and investment from banks and financial institution ibid.”
The plea, filed through advocate Varinder Kumar Sharma, claimed in accordance with the disclosure made in the Hindenburg report, the Adani Group and their associates have violated various laws, including the Indian Penal Code, the Customs Act, the Securities and Exchange Board of India Act, the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act for “illegal and undue benefit” and have caused huge losses to the public sector bank and financial institutions.
ernment agencies to “intimidate and harass” media outlets critical of the ruling establishment.
The Congress termed it as “intimidation tactics”and alleged that the action shows that the Narendra Modi government is scared of criticism. The BJP, in its reaction, accused the BBC of unleashing “venomous” reporting against India and alleged that its propaganda and the Congress’ agenda go together.
BJP’s national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia rejected the Congress’ criticism and said the government agency should be allowed to do its job. He termed the BBC the “most corrupt” organisation in the world and said the Congress should remember that then prime minister Indira Gandhi had also banned the broadcaster.
A host of opposition leaders, including those from the Congress, the Left parties, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Shiv Sena, were critical of the action, with a CPI(M) leader taking a dig at the BJP saying the same BBC was the last word on authenticity when the party was in opposition.

Groups from Ladakh to protest in Delhi demanding statehood
NEW DELHI, FEB 14 (PTI): Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance, an amalgam of trade unions, social, political and religious groups from Ladakh, are set to hold a protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar on Wednesday to raise demand of statehood for the Union Territory. Ladakh became a Union Territory, along with Jammu and Kashmir, when Article 370 and 35 A were abrogated on August 5, 2019. While Jammu and Kashmir is a UT with legislature, Ladakh does not have any provision for it. The two groups, which came together with a set of demands for Ladakh, will hold a daylong protest in the national capital on Wednesday, activist and politician Sajjad Hussain told PTI.
“When Ladakh was made a Union Territory, we were promised develop-
ment. However, it’s been four years and we cannot see any development happening,” Hussain told PTI. “Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance are holding a joint protest. We are raising a four point agenda, under which our demands are statehood for Ladakh, sixth schedule under Constitution, job reservation, a separate Public Service Commission for Ladakh, and two parliamentary seats for Leh and Kargil,” he said. Ladakhbased activist and educator Sonam Wangchuk, who had recently gone on a five-
day ‘climate fast’, to ‘save Ladakh’, said the protest is being held in Delhi so that their voice reaches the government. “We raised our voice from Ladakh, but no one has reached out to us yet. Perhaps our voice did not reach them, so we have come to Delhi to hold a protest,” Wangchuk told PTI. “We have been talking to the government, but in the last three years, the process has stagnated. I did a symbolic protest by holding a fast, we were hoping the government will call us for discussions at least. Sadly, no invitation has been given so far,” he said.

Onion Juice
The idea is that the sulfur in onion juice helps hair regrowth. There’s not much research on this, but a small study tested it in people with alopecia areata, which causes patchy hair loss. Half put onion juice on their scalp twice a day; the rest used tap water. After 2 weeks, 74% of the onion juice group had regrown some hair, compared with 13% of tap water users. If you try it, you might want to add something that masks the smell.
Iron
This crucial nutrient helps your body make blood, and low levels of it are linked to hair loss. The reason why isn’t clear, but make sure you eat plenty of iron-rich foods like meat, fish, poultry, tofu, broccoli, and all kinds of greens. Talk to your doctor before taking iron pills, though. Too much can cause vomiting and constipation. Very high doses can even be fatal.
Biotin
Some doctors prescribe biotin (a.k.a. vitamin B7) for hair loss and get good results. (It’s also good for your skin.) Although it’s safe, you probably get plenty from the foods you eat. Eggs, wheat germ, and mushrooms all contain a high amount of biotin. Don’t worry so much about putting it on your scalp.

Zinc
Since zinc helps with most processes in your body that keep you alive, it’s no surprise that it also strengthens the follicles under your scalp that nourish your hair. Your body doesn’t have a way to store zinc, so you need some in your diet every day. If your levels are low, there’s some proof that taking zinc by mouth could help with hair loss, but more research is needed. Your doctor will likely have you try other treatments first.
Saw Palmetto
From the fruit of a small palm tree comes this herbal remedy, which is sometimes hyped as a hair growth wonder drug. Some studies have shown that it keeps the male hormone testosterone from breaking down, which can help prevent hair loss. While it’s unclear how well saw palmetto works, the good news is that it’s believed to be safe, can be taken with other drugs, and doesn’t cost much to try.
Aromatherapy
Sandalwood, lavender, rosemary, and thyme oils have been used to treat hair loss for over 100 years. A compound in them is thought to boost hair growth. You can try rubbing

It is exciting, says the chief executive, both from a red carpet perspective, but also as a testament to the growing appeal of the Academy, according to ‘Variety’. “It is the real mandate of BAFTA that people are flying from all corners of the world to come to our ceremony. I’m really proud of that, to be honest,” says Millichip. Guests confirmed to attend as presenters include Brian Cox, Catherine-ZetaJones, Cynthia Erivo, Diego Luna, Gugu MbathaRaw, Jamie Dornan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jodie TurnerSmith, Julianne Moore, Lily James, Martin Freeman, Matthew Modine,

one or more of these oils into your scalp for at least 2 minutes every night. Then, wrap your head in a warm towel to help it absorb. A bonus: This nightly massage smells good and can help you feel more relaxed.
Silicon
High levels of this common element can slow down hair loss. (Not to mention, make your locks brighter.) You’ll find different types of silicon supplements at the store, but a manmade version called orthosilicic acid (OSA) may be absorbed best by your body. Still, talk to your doctor first. It’s not clear how safe silicon supplements are.
Selenium
Some hair growth supplements contain a nutrient called selenium. It can help your body fight off any toxins you’re exposed to (like through smoking or unclean air) and keep your hair follicles healthy. Although rats and mice with low selenium start to go bald, this hasn’t been proved true for people. In fact, too much selenium can actually cause hair loss, as well as problems with your memory.
Melatonin
You may know melatonin as the “sleep hormone.” Many people take it as a supplement for a good night’s rest or to cut jet lag. But a cream with melatonin can also boost hair growth or slow down hair loss.
The reasons aren’t clear, but in a study, people who used a melatonin mixture on their scalp saw less hair loss in 30 days. Struggle with dandruff? Melatonin could help that too. As with all supplements, check with your doctor first.
Pumpkinseed Oil
Daily doses of pumpkinseed oil taken by mouth could safely help bring your hair back. While more research is needed, one small study found that men who took four capsules of PSO each day for 6 months saw their hair count increase by 40%. One reason why? Like saw palmetto, pumpkinseed oil could block testosterone from changing into a compound called DHT, which is linked to hair loss.
Green Tea
An extract made from its compounds may help a range of health issues, in-
cluding hair loss. It may be a compound called EGCG that helps with hair growth. Researchers saw a difference when they gave balding rats green tea extract for 6 months. But that hasn’t
been tested in people. Use green tea supplements with caution, though. Some contain other compounds that can make you sick.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
Doctors sometimes inject platelet-rich plasma (PRP), which comes from your own blood, to help with healing after surgery. PRP, which is rich in growth factors, might also help your hair grow. You give a little blood, and a lab spins it in a centrifuge to home in on platelet-rich plasma protein. You then get it injected into different points on your scalp. Many people who have PRP notice their hair grows back -- thicker than before.

These are “building blocks” for proteins. They help your body work the way it should. Some amino acids -- such as cysteine and L-lysine -- play a special role in keeping your hair healthy and growing. But you don’t need to take them as supplements. You should get plenty of amino acids through a healthy diet. Good food sources include cottage cheese, fish, eggs, seeds and nuts, whole grains, and meat.
Smart Hair Care
In some cases, you can help your own hair loss with small and easy changes. Be gentle when you wash, dry, and brush your hair. Don’t yank! Limit the use of curling irons and hot rollers, which can weaken your hair. (So can often wearing

your hair in a tight ponytail, braid, or bun.) If you smoke, now’s a great time to quit. Men who light up are more likely to have hair loss than those who don’t.
Tame Your Stress
Going through a rough time can sometimes lead to hair loss. Try to head it off by getting a better grip on your stress. Try techniques like meditation, deep breathing, guided imagery, relaxation exercises, or talking to a counselor. Exercise is also a great option. These are all easy to learn and proven to help ease tension. Keep in mind, the best treatment for your hair loss depends on the cause. Talk to your doctor for guidance.

Ukraine seeks warplanes at NATO talks
BRUSSELS, FEB 14 (AP): Ukraine on Tuesday renewed its appeal to Western countries for fighter jets to help frustrate Moscow’s invasion, but the United States and its NATO allies and partners are more concerned about Kyiv’s needs for large amounts of ammunition as the war with Russia is set to enter its second year.
Ahead of the meeting of the Ukraine contact group at NATO headquarters, Ukraine made its requirements clear.
Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, when asked what military aid his country is seeking now, showed reporters an image of a fighter jet.
Questioned about where he hoped they might come from, Reznikov said only: “From the sky.”
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pushed hard for combat planes last week when he visited London, Paris and Brussels on just his second foreign trip since Russia invaded on February 24, 2022. That plea came days after Western allies pledged to provide Kyiv with tanks.
What NATO allies have on their mind, though, is how to keep up a steady
Beijing tells US to investigate balloons allegedly flown over China
BEIJING,
FEB 14, (AGENCIES):
China urged the United States on Tuesday to conduct a “thorough investigation” into what Beijing claims was a string of incursions into its airspace by US balloons, reports AFP. Relations between Washington and Beijing have nosedived following the shooting down of what the US alleges was a Chinese spy balloon -- China insisted it was an errant weather observation aircraft with no military purpose.
A number of unidentified aerial objects have subsequently been shot down over North America, though the US has not attributed them to China.
Defence said on Tuesday.

According to some estimates, Ukraine is firing up to 6,000-7,000 artillery shells each day, around a third of the daily amount that Russia is using. Moscow’s forces have been pressing in the east of Ukraine while bolstering their defensive lines in the south. The war has been largely static during the winter months, though both sides are expected to launch offensives when the weather improves.

Pakistan nearly doubles gas prices to meet IMF bailout terms
ISLAMABAD, FEB 14
(AP): Cash-strapped Pakistan nearly doubled natural gas taxes Tuesday in an effort to comply with a longstalled financial bailout, raising concerns that the hardship could pass to consumers in the impoverished south Asian country.
The government’s bid to revive a $6 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund hiked the price of natural gas for domestic and industrial consumers from 16% to 112%, shocking many Pakistanis who already are struggling. A similar increase in the prices of electricity is expected to be announced this week.
“The prices of cooking oil and all food items have doubled in the past less than one year, but there has not been any increase in
our income,” said Zameen Gul, 32, the father of three who works for a construction company in Peshawar.
“I don’t know how are we going to survive.”
Pakistan is country strugglin with instability stemming from an economic crisis, last summer’s devastating floods and a recent surge in violence.
A critical $1.2 billion portion of the 2019 bailout has been stalled since December, with the IMF urging Pakistan to raise more cash. The tax hike on natural gas Tuesday is likely to further increase the cost of production andan increase in already spiraling inflation, experts said.
Ahmad has been a critic of seeking bailouts from the IMF, but he said in these circumstances Pakistan had no other option.
“Overall, the current operational picture suggests that Russian forces are being given orders to advance in most sectors, but that they have not massed sufficient offensive combat power on any one axis to achieve a decisive effect,” it tweeted.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said that finding ammunition and air defences is “much more important at the moment than the discussion about fighter jets”.
Pistorius told reporters that getting pilots up to speed on new aircraft and “training just to fly them takes several months, never
mind teaching the abilities needed to deploy the weapons systems”. He said Ukraine’s partners “should focus on what is now at center stage, particularly in view of a Russian offensive that is apparently taking place”.
He said Germany has signed a deal to produce ammunition for self-propelled, anti-aircraft guns it provided to Ukraine, after Kyiv ran into problems finding munitions elsewhere. That ammunition is crucial for Kyiv to counter Russian attacks, especially on Ukraine’s power infrastructure aimed at disrupting heating and drinking water supply.
On Tuesday, Beijing doubled down on unsubstantiated allegations that the US has sent over 10 balloons since last year.
“The US has launched several highaltitude balloons from the US that made continuous round-the-world flights, illegally flying over the airspace of China and other countries on at least 10 occasions,” foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin told a regular briefing. “The US side should conduct a thorough investigation and give an explanation to China,” he added.
Wang did not provide evidence of the alleged incursions, which he said started in May 2022. He previously told journalists the incursions began in January that year.
Washington has denied Beijing’s claims that it sent observation devices into Chinese airspace. The US government alleges the balloon it shot down on February 4 was part of an ongoing, global “fleet” of Chinese espionage balloons. It says the balloon was obviously a spy craft and that the debris is currently being plucked from the Atlantic Ocean for analysis.
Haley announces 2024 US presidential bid
WASHINGTON, FEB 14 (PTI): Nikki Haley, who announced her 2024 US presidential bid, has not only taken on political insiders in South Carolina but also confronted countries like China and Russia during her stint at the UN.
In her speeches, Haley , 51, identifies herself as a “proud daughter of Indian immigrants”, whereas in public life her friends and foes describe her as a “conservative outsider”, a “trailblazer”, and a “fighter”.
Born Nimrata Nikki Randhawa to immigrant Punjabi Sikh parents in Bamberg, she is the twoterm Governor of South Carolina and the former US Ambassador to the United Nations. She earned an accounting degree from Clemson University. After that, she joined her family’s

Before entering the public service, she served as treasurer and president of the National Association of Women Business Owners.
At 39, Haley was the youngest governor in the US when she took office in January 2011, and made history as South Carolina’s first female governor. She was also the state’s first Indian-American governor and would go on to serve for two terms.
From January 2017 to December 2018, she served as the 29th US ambassa-
dor to the United Nations under the previous Trump administration. Being a woman from an ethnic minority community, the pundits have underestimated Haley her whole life, and she has proven them wrong every time. She defeated a 30year Republican incumbent when she ran for the state legislature. She defeated better known and better funded Republicans when she ran for the governor and defied expectations at the UN and showed the world what real leadership looks like.
As Nikki likes to say, “Underestimate me… that’ll be fun.” As the governor of South Carolina, she was known as a job creator, reformer and conservative champion, while as diplomat at the UN, she was a reformer, fighter, and human rights champion.
Taiwan threatens to shoot down any Chinese balloons
Amid speculation over alleged Chinese spy balloons, Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said on Tuesday it would shoot down any suspected military object coming close to its shores from mainland China. Maj. Gen. Huang Wen-chi, the assistant deputy chief of general staff for intelligence, told reporters that the self-governing island was on guard for any incursions, but had yet to find any that had penetrated its defences. Balloons found so far around Taiwan were used for meteorological exploration, he said. They were relatively small and light and would burst after rising to an altitude that could be threatening. Taiwan has yet to find targets requiring a lethal response, he said. “We haven’t seen such sophisticated spy balloons sent by the Chinese Communist Party in the waters near Taiwan,” Huang said, referring to the balloon shot down by the US earlier this month after travelling for days from above Alaska to South Carolina.
NATO chief unfazed about Finland, Sweden joining together
BRUSSELS, FEB 14 (AP):
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg played down on Tuesday the importance of Finland and Sweden joining the world’s biggest security organisation at the same time as Turkiye refuses to ratify their membership, mostly due to a dispute with Sweden.
“The main question is not whether Finland and Sweden are ratified together. The main question is that they are both ratified as full members as soon as possible,” Stoltenberg told reporters. The long-held consensus at NATO has been that both the Nordic neighbours should join at the same time. Sweden and neighbouring Finland abandoned decades of nonalignment and applied to join the 30-nation alliance in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. All NATO members except Turkiye
Jens Stoltenbergand Hungary have ratified their accession, but unanimity is required. Turkiye has accused the government in Stockholm of being too lenient toward groups it deems as terror organisations or existential threats, including Kurdish groups.
Earlier this month, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said Ankara has fewer problems with Finland joining. He stressed, however, that it was up to the military alliance to decide whether to accept one country only or the Nordic duo together.

COPENHAGEN, FEB 14 (AGENCIES): The World Health Organization said Tuesday that last week’s massive earthquake, the epicentre of which was in Turkey, constituted the “worst natural disaster” in 100 years in its Europe region. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake, followed by a major aftershock, on February 6 has now killed more than 35,000 people in Turkey and neighbouring Syria. “We are witnessing the worst natural disaster in the WHO European region for a century and we are still learning about its magnitude,” Hans Kluge, WHO regional director for Europe, told a press conference. The WHO’s European region comprises 53 countries, including Turkey. Syria is a member of the WHO’s neighbouring Eastern Mediterranean region. The confirmed death count following the earthquake stands at 35,331, as
officials and medics said 31,643 people had died in Turkey and at least 3,688 in Syria. The toll has barely changed in Syria for several days and is expected to rise.
“The needs are huge, increasing by the hour. Some 26 million people across both countries need humanitarian assistance,” Kluge said.

Ogbeche secures 2nd place for Hyderabad FC
HYDERABAD, FEB 14 (PTI): Hyderabad FC confirmed a second-place finish in the league stage of the Indian Super League (ISL) after a 1-0 win over ATK Mohun Bagan here on Tuesday.
Bartholomew Ogbeche came on as a substitute and scored the only goal of the match in the 86th minute as the Mariners went three successive games without a win for the first time this season.
ATK Mohun Bagan are now only one point ahead of seventh-placed Odisha FC. The visitors looked aggressive in the first half as they attempted eight shots but only managed to keep two of those on target.
Two minutes into the game, Hyderabad FC hit the ground running after Mohammad Yasir moved into the central part of the pitch from the right flank before seeing Vishal Kaith deny his long-range effort at full stretch. Dimitri Petratos was hunting for his ninth goal of the season when he tested Gurmeet Singh from
range. The keeper palmed the striker’s effort over the bar before seeing his glancing header from the resulting corner fly wide at the far post. Chinglensana Singh made his first appearance for Hyderabad FC after being on the sidelines for two months. The 26-year-old
was caught on the wrong foot when Liston Colaco charged in before scuffing his shot during one of ATKMB’s attacking moves. Hyderabad FC attempted just two shots in the first half but managed four in the opening five minutes of the second half. Four
SA beat NZ to save Women’s WC campaign
PAARL, FEB 14 (IANS):
South Africa kept their semifinal hopes alive as they beat Group 1 rivals New Zealand at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023, here.
A shock defeat to Sri Lanka on the opening day had left South Africa reeling, knowing they would have to beat at least one of Australia or New Zealand and potentially both in order to qualify for the final four, reports ICC. And the Proteas massively boosted their semi-final chances with a brilliant display against a New Zealand side, who have now suffered two heavy defeats in the tournament.
Nonkululeko Mlaba (3/10) lit up the Powerplay, removing both of New Zealand’s openers for ducks, meaning that the White Ferns have returned 0/4 from their opening batters so far in this tournament.
Mlaba had Bernadine Bezuldenhout brilliantly stumped off just the second ball of the innings. And the
spinner was at it again in her second over, cleaning up Suzie Bates and celebrating in style. Sophie Devine dropped herself from opener down to number five in the batting order, but the captain was out in the middle inside the Powerplay as Georgia Plimmer was caught off Marizanne Kapp. The White Ferns were struggling on 13/3 in their chase of 133, and things went from bad to worse when Amelia Kerr edged behind to depart for 10 (12).
The Kiwis reached just 19/4 at the end of the Powerplay, and Chloe Tryon dismissed Maddy Green to leave New Zealand five down and relying hugely on Devine to bail them out at Boland Park. But wickets continued to fall, and when Devine was trapped in front by Tryon the jig was all but up. And South Africa wrapped up the victory in the penultimate over, winning by 65 runs to give their net run rate a huge and potentiallycrucial boost.
minutes past the hour-mark, Joel Chianese’s glancing header from Yasir’s freekick was on target but flew straight into the arms of the keeper. As the game entered its final quarter, Feder ico Gallego was picked out in the box by Asish Rai. The midfielder’s deft
touch helped him skip past Chinglensana but narrowed the angle to goal down as his effort was collected comfortably by Gurmeet. Roles reversed in the 78th minute when Gallego lofted the ball into the path of Rai inside the box. The full-back reached it but could not keep it on target. In the 79th minute, Ogbeche hopped onto the pitch, replacing Siverio. Seven minutes after coming on, the striker was picked out at the edge of the box by Herrera. Ogbeche took a touch, steadied himself and buried the winner past Kaith at the far post to clinch all three points for Hyderabad. The result marked another blow to ATKMB, who have now scored only three goals in their last six games, and have fallen into the lower half of the playoffs tussle after being contenders for the top three not long ago. Both sides will be back in action on February 18. Hyderabad FC take on Jamshedpur FC while ATKMB host Kerala Blasters.
Badminton Asia Mixed Team C’ships: India stun Kazakhstan in the opener
DUBAI, FEB 14 (IANS): India registered a clean sweep against Kazakhstan 5-0 in their opening tie of Group B at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships on Tuesday. The mixed doubles team of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto got India off to a winning start. The duo trounced Kazakhstan’s Makhsut Tadzhibullaev and Nargiza Rakhmetullayeva 21-5, 21-11 at the Dubai Exhibition Centre.
In the second rubber, H.S Prannoy moved past Dmitriy Panarin 21-9, 21-11 in the men’s singles match to extend the lead to 2-0 in the tie.
P.V Sindhu, who returned to the action after missing the Indonesia and Thailand Masters last month, registered an easy 21-4, 21-12 win over Kamila Smagulova to give India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the tie. In the men’s doubles match, a dead rubber, Krishna Prasad Garga

Panjala broke little sweat to dispatch their opponents, Khaitmurat Kulmatov and Artur Niyazov. The Indians won the match 21-10, 21-6. India’s best-ranked women’s doubles pair, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand ensured a clean sweep, beating the Kazakh
team of Nargiza Rakhmetullayeva and Aisha Zhumabek by a 21-5, 21-7 in the final rubber.
India will play the hosts UAE on Wednesday and will face Malaysia in the final tie on Thursday. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals.

Belgian goalkeeper dies after saving
