NSCN (YA) observes 43rd Foundation Day

DIMAPUR: Yung Aungled NSCN (K) on January 31 observed its 43rd Foundation Day at its council headquarters.

In his message, NSCN chairman Yung Aung said that a lot had changed since NSCN/GPRN came into formation in 1980. However, Yung Aung alleged that “due to India’s continues divisive design to extinguish the Naga movement, many national workers has fallen into the trap with no hope of ever getting out.”

He said Nagas had witness break-up due political differences leading to fratricide between brothers which has stagnant our struggle for many years. “Today the fact remains that when all others big or small has abandon their national pledge, NSCN/GPRN is the lone organization zealously defending the sovereign right

of the Naga nation till to this very day,” he stated.

Yung Aung further went on to point out that the “so-called Naga political groups are in the process to trade the Naga sovereignty in exchange for a mere solution within Indian Union that way the Naga people’s aspiration to be free is being held hostage by both GOI and the Pro-Talk groups.”

He said that the NSCN/GPRN will “not stop pursuing justice and redress of our people on both sides of the impose boundary.”

While stating that Naga struggle had come too far and the people had suffered too long and too many lives lost, hence, Aung said “anything less than full sovereignty is not an option.”

He asserted that the NSCN/GPRN will strongly reject any sell-out solution

which compromises the sovereign dream of the Naga people. Aung said it was high time for Naga intellectuals, Naga Tribal Councils, civil societies and student bodies to deeply examine the facts from wrong. “Two future awaits us, either we choose a future of permanent subjugation or a future of hope and freedom,” he said. Therefore, he called upon all Nagas to unite and seek God for his divine wisdom and strength to guide the people out of this darkness into the light of hope and freedom. On the occasion, Aung also paid tributes to the National pioneers, brave comrades and thousands of innocent Nagas who sacrificed selflessly for the national cause.

AGARTALA, FEB 1 (PTI):

Leader of Opposition in Tripura Assembly, Manik Sarkar, on Wednesday said that the BJP “misrule” in the state brought the Congress and the CPI(M) together for an electoral understanding ahead of the assembly elections. The elections to the 60-member assembly will be held on February 16.

Addressing an election rally in Julaibari area in South Tripura district, he said, “The CPI(M) had given a call to all secular and democratic forces to join hands to oust the BJP from power in the state. We got response from the Congress and one more party to restore democracy in the northeastern state and went for an electoral understanding.”

Sarkar said the BJP is afraid and is misleading people by alleging that CPI(M) and Congress had

“BSF would convene meetings immediately with their counterparts to sensitise them to take a more vigilant approach considering the ensuing assembly elections in Tripura.”

Three special observers of the Election Commission visited Tripura for five days and reviewed the February 16 poll preparedness and security arrangements

The official said that the CAPFs were deployed for area domination, patrolling, flag march, vehicular patrolling, Naka duty, raids apart from counter insurgency operations.

According to the official, after the announcement of the Assembly election schedule by the Election Commission on January 18, a total number of 192 Naka

points (check gate) have been established in various strategic locations.

“Naka checking is going on regularly in all naka points. Special vehicle checking is also going on.

A special drive for vehicle checking was launched and over 11,000 vehicles were checked as part of the preventive action,” the official said.

In order to maintain a sense of security among

the people in the state, so far more than 1,700 flag marches and area domination patrolling have been done with joint participation of state police, TSR and CAPF, he stated. A senior election official said that the Border Security Force (BSF),who are posted along the Bangladesh borders, would not only intensify their vigil but also keep in touch with their counterparts -- Border

The three special observers are Yogendra Tripathy, a retired IAS officer of Karnataka cadre; Vivek Johri, former Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh; and B. Murali Kumar, an IRS officer, who was special observer in the Assembly elections of Gujarat (2022) and West Bengal (2021).

The observers directed that drones should be used for detection of marijuana plantations and other enforcement measures wherever possible, the official said.

been fighting amongst themselves for several years and they suddenly came together before the polls. “The BJP’s misrule in the last five years has brought the CPI(M) and Congress together… You (BJP) are responsible… The credit goes to you,” he said.

“The BJP wanted elections in two-three phases for ease of looting votes but we had categorically requested the ECI for single-day election,” he said.

People won’t allow the “miscreants” to loot votes this time, Sarkar said, urging voters to exercise their franchise in large numbers.

Meghalaya Trinamool Congress President, Charles Pyngrope on Wednesday predicted a hung assembly with no political party getting an absolute majority and said the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) will no longer enrage as the single largest party in the State Assembly.

“I don’t see any single political party hitting the 31 mark. It will be a coalition government again. People on the ground are not bothered which party forms the government. They look for the individual and vote and that’s the reason it has become difficult for any party to get an absolute majority,” the former Assembly Speaker said. Noting that people in the State are going to vote for a person and not on party-based politics, Pyngrope said, “No matter

how much you curse the UDP (United Democratic Party) because of its alliance with the BJP and NPP (National People’s Party). Issues too don’t bother the voters much in Meghalaya as far as my understanding because people will vote for an Individual.”

Except the BJP, all other parties have begun their campaigning, especially the TMC and the NPP. Reacting to the “outsider tag” pinned on the TMC, Pyngrope said, people are not bothered with

“One year ago maybe people would have listened to such claims and views. Now people are not bothered about which party you come from. It’s sad, but that’s the fact. It’s the person ‘they say we are going to vote for’ and this is coming up across all party lines,” the three-time lawmaker said.

Pyngrope said that coalition governments in Meghalaya will continue to stay because of this identity based politics and so different parties would have to get together to form the government. “We (TMC) are confident that we would have enough numbers to align with others to form the government. There would be a coalition government, but BJP will not cross more than 3 or 4 seats .I don’t foresee the NPP as the single largest party again. People have seen the level of governance which has reached to a very

low standards, mismanagement of different departments, misappropriation of public funds, corruption and there is no rule of law,” he said. Defending the TMC’s poll manifesto in which several sops were assured, the TMC president said that these schemes can be implemented and would cost just 3 percent of the state GDP. He said there is a mechanism through which funds can be generated to implement these schemes. Asked if he is regretting of leaving the Congress and joining TMC, Pyngrope said, “Congress is a lost party as of now. It has lost its way. Who talks about the Congress and nobody talks about the Congress now? Regret means I want to go back and we don’t want to go back. Regret is that the Congress has burnt its own boat and that is the regret, but there is no regret to leave the party.”

K S Thennarasu as the AIADMK candidate, his estranged colleague Panneerselvam convened a press conference and announced his nominee -- Senthil Murugan.

BJP plans campaign to highlight Budget

Rahul, Priyanka could enjoy snowfall in valley because of Modi: Tarun Chugh

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (IANS): BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh on Tuesday unfurled the national flag in national capital in the memory of people, who sacrificed their lives for the unity and integrity of the country.

Addressing a massive gathering of people, Chugh paid his tributes to Praja Parishad martyrs in Jaurian village here.

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (PTI): The BJP will start a 12-day nationwide campaign on Wednesday to make people aware of the “pro-people” measures that are to be announced in the Union Budget, party leaders said.

The campaign will be coordinated by senior BJP leader Sushil Modi and conclude on February 12, they said.

BJP president J P Nadda has formed a task force comprising nine members, including party general secretary Sunil Bansal and heads of its farmer and youth wings, to organise discussions, press conferences or seminars on the Union Budget in all districts of the country, they said.

Court formalities completed for Kappan’s release

Finance Minister

Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for 2023-24 in Parliament on Wednesday.

A day after the Union Budget is presented in Parliament, chief ministers of all BJP-ruled states, as part of the campaign, will hold press conferences, party leaders said, adding that in states where the party is not in power, BJP unit heads and leaders of opposition in the assembly will hold press conferences.

In 50 major cities of the country, ministers of the Narendra Modi government will hold press conferences to highlight the “pro-people” measures announced in the Union Budget, they said. After the budget is

presented, the BJP is also expected to hold a meeting of its spokespersons.

To finalise programmes and decide the blueprint of the BJP’s campaign on the Union Budget, the task force constituted for it met at the BJP headquarters here on Monday.

This Union Budget will the last full-fledged budget of the second term of the Narendra Modi government as the general elections will be held in 2024. Hence, the ruling BJP at the Centre wants to make the most out of this campaign.

Earlier too the BJP has organised nationwide public awareness exercises to make people aware about various reforms and initiatives announced by the Modi government in its budgets.

He said it has been a saga of sacrifices that has brought us to this stage where Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of progress and development has started reverberating again. He asked why it took 70 years for the Congress and its leaders like Rahul Gandhi to hoist the national flag at the Lal Chowk in Srinagar.

Chugh added that Modi’s zero tolerance

for terrorism has made it possible for Rahul and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to enjoy snowfall in the Kashmir valley. The BJP National General Secretary was accompanied by former Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, Jammu and Kashmir BJP Vice-President Sham Lal Sharma, senior BJP leader Devender Singh Rana, Daljit Singh Chib and other party leaders in presence of representatives

of social organisations and prominent locals.

While paying tributes to martyrs, Chugh said that the struggle to remove Articles 370 and 35-A continued for 70 years. He added that Jammu and Kashmir has a long history of struggle and movement. The pages of history are full of renunciation, austerity and sacrifice.

“When Sheikh Abdullah implemented the permit system to enter Jammu and Kashmir, the Praja Parishad raised the slogan -- ‘Desh mein do pradhan, do vidhan, do nishan: nahi chalenge, nahi chalenge’.”

“On January 11, 1953, two days before Lohri, the police opened fire on a procession in which more than 5,000 people were participating. More than 200

rounds were fired in which two people were killed and more than 70 were injured. On January 31, 1953, a huge crowd of protesting farmers gathered in Jyodia village. The farmers came out in huge numbers towards Jammu carrying the tricolour in their hands. The police opened fire on the agitators, in which seven people were killed, to salute whose sacrifice and spirit we all have gathered here,” Chugh added. He also criticised Rahul Gandhi for his party’s delay of 70 long years in hoisting the Tiranga at the Lal Chowk. Chugh added that he (Rahul Gandhi) should be thankful to Modi-led BJP government that he could enter Jammu and Kashmir without permit and hoist the Tiranga at the Lal Chowk without any issue.

‘Step-motherly treatment to Delhi’: Kejriwal slams Budget

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (IANS): Delhiites have been meted out “stepmotherly treatment yet again”, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said while reacting to the Union Budget 202324 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday.

“... The people of Delhi paid Rs 1.75 lakh crore in income tax last year. Out of that, only Rs 325 crore has been given to Delhi for development work. This is completely unjustified,” Kejriwal said in a series of tweets.

“There is no relief from inflation in this budget. In fact, it will only rise because of the budget. There is no

Defence Budget: Focus on preparedness, Agniveers’ training

LUCKNOW, FEB 1 (PTI): The sureties required for the release of Kerala journalist Siddique Kappan on bail have been submitted in a court here and his lawyer said he might walk out of jail on Thursday.

When asked whether formalities related to Kappan’s submission of sureties have been done in the special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court, his lawyer Mohamed Dhanish K S told PTI, “Sureties were presented in the court today. Court part is complete now. Release order sent to jail”.

He said the release is expected anytime on Thursday.

The lawyer said the judge was present in the court on Wednesday and he approved the sureties.

Two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each could not be submitted on Tuesday in the PMLA court here due to the absence of the judge.

Kappan is currently lodged in the Lucknow district jail.

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (IANS): In the Defence Budget, the focus has been given towards maintaining a high-level of Operational Preparedness of the Services to face the current and future challenges, while the non-salary revenue operational allocation gets a boost of Rs 27,570 crore, with the budgetary outlay under this segment augmented from Rs 62,431 crore in BE 2022-23 to Rs 90,000 crore in BE 2023-24.

The enhanced allocations in the Budget will also cater to Training Aids and Simulators for Agniveers and ensure that they achieve the set standards of training for induction into the Defence Forces.

“This will cater to sustenance of weapon systems, platforms including ships/ aircraft and their logistics; boost fleet serviceability; emergency procurement of critical ammunition and spares; procuring/hiring of niche

capabilities to mitigate capability gaps wherever required; progress stocking of military reserves, strengthening forward defences, amongst others,” said the Ministry of Defence.

As a precursor to this increase in the NonSalary Revenue segment, the government during the Midterm review had also enhanced the operational allotments of the current financial year by Rs 26,000 crore, which works out as 42% of the present allocation.

This unprecedented increase in the Revised Estimates 2022-23 has ensured liquidation of the entire carry over liabilities during the current year, thereby, ensuring that there is no dent in next year’s operational outlay of the services.

concrete scheme to address joblessness. The reduction of education budget from 2.64 per cent to 2.5 per cent is unfortunate. Cutting the health allocation from 2.2 per cent to 1.98 per cent is harmful,” he said in another

tweet. The AAP-led Delhi government has always been critical for the budgetary allocation to the national capital city. The party had protested against the Centre’s budgetary allocation for Delhi.

AAP leader Sanjay Singh took a jibe at the government over the ‘double income’ claim asking ‘whose income got doubled’. “Neither did the MSP of the farmers increase, neither the youth got employment. But this is the Amrit Kaal of Modi ji. Nirmala ji is saying ‘Per capita income has doubled’, Whose?” he tweeted.

Nationalism syndrome

For a refreshing change and finally making it clear that all those indulging in a nonsense pastime close shop and get lost; prime minister Narendra Modi gave stern remarks to the party bandwagon- leaders and workers- to not indulge in unnecessary remarks on irrelevant issues such as movies as doing so only pushes the party’s development agenda to the back burner. The prime minister said this while addressing the second day of the BJP’s National Executive meeting in New Delhi on January 31. Prime Minister Modi’s warning was to the party band-wagon against making “unnecessary comments on irrelevant subjects like movies”. The prime minister’s ire and irritation was clear a signal to those like Madhya Pradesh minister Narottam Mishra, who have been creating nuisance and noise over Shah Rukh Khan-Deepika Padukone starrer and upcoming Pathaan. What caught Na-rottam’s eye was the saffron coloured bikini worn by Deepika in the song ‘Besharam Rang’, composed by Vishal and Shekhar and sung by Shilpa Rao. According to Narottam, the clothes are “highly objectionable” and it is clearly visible that this song was filmed out of a “contaminated mentality”. Narottam’s ranting found resonance with the rabid elements who had threatened to take matters into their own hands. Since then, many politicians and others have alleged that the film hurt their religious sentiments. Modi’s timely message was loud and clear as little more was heard of Narottam and the so-called moral Talibans as the movie finally passed through after a series of scrutiny. Pathaan went on to fetch Rs.50 crore on the first day and records tumbled when it inched close to entering the Rs. 300 crore club. It will be Khan’s first film to earn Rs.300 crore on the 7th day of re-lease. On the global stage, the film is doing quite well close to Rs.600 crore. The Pathaan episode involving the multi-starrer Pathaan is a case in point on how right wing politicians espousing hindutva whimsically place hur-dles on anything they don’t approve. All these are trends due to a symbiotic relationship between the ruling party at the Centre and lumpen elements who have made social media their turf to promote an aggressive brand of nationalism. This in turn inspires the impressionable infant-like minds to take pride in call for boycott of movies or worse, actors who are seen to not be adherents of majoritarianism. Take for example the case of Maharashtra government which recently launched an awareness campaign, whereby people were advised to replace ‘hello’ with ‘Vande Mataram’ on receiving phone calls. Add to it the gusto of renaming cities and artefacts throughout the country. Nationalism, just like religion, is the opium of the masses. In this context, it is noteworthy to remember Robert Musil’s The Man Without Qualities where the protagonist Ulrich wrote in his essay, “[Anyone] who really loved his country must never regard it as the best country in the world.” This view may not be consistent with the populist view in India today. To this, James Bryce wrote : “Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.” Indians need to rise over symbolic feats. If symbolism had anything concrete to offer, two Dalits (K.R.Narayanan and Ram Nath Kovind) and one tribal (Draupadi Murmu) would have been enough to uplift all Dalits and Tribals in the country.

The Call of God

Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel… —1 Corinthians 1:17

Paul states here that the call of God is to preach the gospel. But remember what Paul means by “the gospel,” namely, the reality of redemption in our Lord Jesus Christ. We are inclined to make sanctification the goal of our preaching. Paul refers to personal experiences only by way of illustration, never as the end of the matter. We are not commissioned to preach salvation or sanctification— we are commissioned to lift up Jesus Christ (see John 12:32). It is an injustice to say that Jesus Christ labored in redemption to make me a saint. Jesus Christ labored in redemption to redeem the whole world and to place it perfectly whole and restored before the throne of God. The fact that we can experience redemption illustrates the power of its reality, but that experience is a byproduct and not the goal of redemption. If God were human, how sick and tired He would be of the constant requests we make for our salvation and for our sanctification. We burden His energies from morning till night asking for things for ourselves or for something from which we want to be delivered! When we finally touch the underlying foundation of the reality of the gospel of God, we will never bother Him anymore with little personal complaints.

The one passion of Paul’s life was to proclaim the gospel of God. He welcomed heartbreak, disillusionment, and tribulation for only one reason— these things kept him unmovable in his devotion to the gospel of God.

What Economic Survey 2022-23 Telling Us About Indian Economy

India’s annual pre-budget Economic Survey 202324 ,a flagship document of the government and a testament of India specific tabled by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has triggered aligned in the right direction of sustained economic growth. According to the Economic Survey 2023, despite the three shocks of COVID-19, Russian-Ukraine conflict and the Central Banks across economies led by Federal Reserve India is thirdlargest economy in the world in PPP (purchasing power parity) terms; 5th largest in terms of exchange rate. The economy has nearly recouped what was lost, renewed what had paused; re-energised what had slowed during the pandemic. India’s economy may grow 6.5 pc in 2023-24, compared to 7 pc this fiscal and 8.7 pc in 2021-22 while GDP in nominal terms to be 11 pc in next fiscal.

Overall Economic Survey outcome is positive for market as upgrade in FY23 GDP growth expectation of 7% augurs well, while FY24 Inflation of below 6%, within RBI’s targeted range provides major relief. However, FY24 GDP growth of 6-6.8% is tad below desired 7%+ range. Preference on Growth over fiscal deficit would be key trigger for market sentiment going ahead. Other parameters in terms of GST collection, direct taxes and other

revenues are encouraging in this challenging global economic environment. The government is on track to achieve the fiscal deficit target for the year despite fiscal pressures, which is commendable. Manufacturing and investment activities consequently gained traction. By the time the growth of exports moderated, the rebound in domestic consumption had sufficiently matured to take forward the growth of India’s economy. Private Consumption as a percentage of GDP stood at 58.4 per cent in Q2 of FY23, the highest among the second quarters of all the years since 2013-14, supported by a rebound in contact-intensive services such as trade, hotel and transport, which registered sequential growth of 16 per cent in real terms in Q2 of FY23 compared to the previous quarter. The agriculture sector in India has grown at an average annual growth rate of 4.6 percent during the last six years, stated Economic Survey 2023 At 7 per cent GDP growth in FY23 and 6-6.8 per cent growth in FY24, India will continue to hold its fastest growing large nation tag. This will create tailwinds for the Indian economy as global capital and technology finds India a bright spot to participate in an otherwise weak global economic order. This shall create employment

opportunities and further strengthen the domestic demand base of the country. Real estate, being a derived demand product and an economic multiplier, will certainly benefit from this improved economic outlook for the country. While housing demand remains strong leading to reduced inventory levels, the resumption of construction activities has ensured sustained supply thereby averting sharp price rise risk in the sector.

Widening CAD for an extended period is a concern. The fundamentals of the Indian economy are solid, however, in the short to medium-term, widening current account deficit for an extended period is a concern that could have an implication on growth and depreciation of the INR.

The government must address the supply bottlenecks to contain inflationary pressures and bring it back within its comfort range in a timely manner. Government must pursue policies to cushion the economy to reduce the vagaries of the global business cycle and focus on a greater degree on building infrastructure, creating an industrial base, and encouraging new business formation.

Challenges galore for Cong on path to 2024, needs to answer ‘what next’ after Yatra

The Bharat Jodo Yatra may have galvanised the rank and file of the Congress party and helped improve the image of its leader Rahul Gandhi, but the party’s path to parliamentary elections in 2024 remains strewn with many challenges, analysts and experts say.

The grand old party faces the onerous task of rebuilding its moribund organisation, which is struggling to overcome a leadership crisis and regain credibility with the voters. It also has to craft a political narrative that not only counters the ruling BJP’s Hindutva-driven mobilisation but also yields tangible electoral gains.

The success of the over 4,000-kilometre Bharat Jodo Yatra, which concludes here on Monday, will be judged by the outcome of the state polls in the run-up to the 2024 national election. Should the Congress do well in these elections, the opposition regional parties could drop their reluctance to accept the Congress as the “fulcrum” of an antiBJP alliance in 2024.

Political commentator Sanjay Jha, who was once a spokesperson for the Congress party, said the real task of taking on the BJP begins now for the Congress and the party has a clear “tailwind”.

“The cadres have been galvanised. (Congress president) Mallikarjun Kharge is making aggressive, combative speeches that are seemingly getting under BJP’s skin,” Jha told PTI.

He said the Congress needs to treat 2023 as a semi-final knockout and a “do or die”.

As many as nine states -- Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana -- go to polls this year. Not much is expected to go in favour of the Congress in the four north-eastern states, where assembly elections will be held next month. The party has been steadily losing ground in these states and is unlikely to revive its electoral fortunes there.

In Mizoram, the Congress had suffered a crushing defeat in 2018 and was down to just five seats. While in Meghalaya it had lost to the NDA; it had drawn a blank in Tripura and Nagaland.

But a dismal show in the northeast can be more than offset, if the party wrests power in Karnataka, which will likely go to polls in March-April. Most political observers give Congress an edge over the BJP in this southern state. That said, the most crucial electoral test will come toward the end of the year, when the four other bigger states hold elections.

“With Karnataka looking to swing back, Congress needs to immediately resolve the Rajasthan gridlock by making Sachin Pilot the chief minister. Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh can both

With m ajor capital expenditure outlays and an outlook for employment generation, the Union Budget 2023 presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is a welcome budget with a progressive outlook, balancing economic social and ecological stability and development of the country and region. North East region is set to gain substantially from the Budget 2023.

Mr Pradeep Bagla, Chairman, CII North East Council & Managing Director, Amrit Cement Limited, said that the announcements in the Infrastructure sector, including enhancing capital outlay to Rs 2.40 lakh crore to the Railways and Government’s announcement of push for transport infra projects through revitalization of 50 additional airports, heliports, water aerodromes, and advanced landing zones would certainly facilitate last mile connectivity hence increasing tourism. The infusion of Rs 10 thousand crore fund for urban development will boost the urbanisation efforts of the state governments.

In the agriculture sector, making available quality planting materials especially for millets, Agri accelerator fund to support agri startups, young entrepreneurs for innovative solutions will benefit and encourage aspiring startups, Entrepreneurs and Farmers in North East. The increased credit target of Rs 20 lacs crore for agriculture sector with focus on animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries will fuel growth and enhance farmers incomes. Further the support and focus accorded to Natural farming will boost the organic outlook of the North East states.

What happens to our data when we no longer use a social media network or publishing platform?

The internet plays a cen-

be won, if the Congress stops committing hara-kiri,” said Jha. Telangana is also crucial, where the Congress party runs the risk of losing being the main opposition to the BJP.

The party’s electoral performance in the states of Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, where the Congress is in direct contest with BJP, is “very important for the Congress if it wants to stay relevant in 2024,” said Sanjay Kumar, co-director of Lokniti at the New Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Taken together, these four states send 93 MPs to the 543-member Lok Sabha.

A bigger challenge, however, “would be to strengthen the party structure in states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal, which are big and where the Congress is no more a visible political force,” Kumar said. Elsewhere, in states like Gujarat, the party structure needs to be strengthened.

The party needs to keep answering the question “what next?”, Kumar told PTI.

There has been talk of several challenges for the party since a long time, one of which -- about leadership -- has been solved with Kharge’s election. The other was of mass contact and connection with the people on which a beginning has been made with the Bharat Jodo Yatra. But that has to continue in different forms, not just a padyatra, he said.

The Congress began its ‘Haath Se Haath Jodo Abhiyaan’ on January 26 as a follow-up to the yatra under which it aims to take the message of the march to each and every household.

“That would be a big challenge,” Thakur said.

Through its 145-day journey, the yatra has received support from a crosssection of opposition parties such as the DMK in Tamil Nadu, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party in Kashmir, whose leaders joined in.

There are also many prominent opposition parties that chose to stay away. These included the Bharat Rashtra Samiti of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s Biju Janata Dal, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, which continue to explore a non-Congress, non-BJP third front.

The optics at Monday’s yatra finale, which is expected to be attended by many opposition leaders, will tell how far the Congress has come in cementing its ambition to become the “fulcrum” of a national alternative to BJP in 2024.

tral role in our lives. I

— and many others my age — grew up alongside the development of social media and content platforms.

My peers and I built personal websites on GeoCities, blogged on LiveJournal, made friends on MySpace and hung out on Nexopia. Many of these earlier platforms and social spaces occupy large parts of youth memories.

For that reason, the web has become a complex entanglement of attachment and connection.

My doctoral research looks at how we have become “databound” — attached to the data we have produced throughout our lives in ways we both can and cannot control.

What happens to our data when we abandon a platform? What should become of it? Would you want a say?

Massive amounts of personal data

We produce data every day as part of our work, communication, banking, housing, transportation and social life.

We are often unaware — and therefore unable to refuse — how much data we produce, and we seldom have a say in how it’s used, stored or deployed.

This lack of control negatively impacts us, and the effects are disproportionate across the different intersections of race, gender and class.

Information about our identities can be used in algorithms and by others to oppress, discriminate, harass, dox and otherwise harm us. Personal data privacy is often thought of along the lines of corporate breaches, medical record hacks and credit card theft. My research into youth participation and data production on the popular platforms that characterised the late 1990s to 2000s — like GeoCities, Nexopia, LiveJournal and MySpace — shows that this time period is an era of data privacy that is not often considered in our contemporary context.

The data is often personal and created within specific contexts of social and digital participation. Examples include diary-style blogs, creative writing, selfies and participat-

ing in fandom. This user-generated content, unless actions are taken to carefully delete them, can have a long life: the internet is forever.

Decisions about what should happen to our digital traces should be influenced by the people who made them. Their use impacts our privacy, autonomy and anonymity, and is ultimately a question of power.

Typically, when a website or platform “dies,” or “sunsets,” decisions about data are made by employees of the company on an ad-hoc basis.

Controlling data

Proprietary data — that which is produced on a platform and held by the company — is at the discretion of the company, not the people who produced it.

More often, options that a platform provides to users to determine their privacy or deletion do not remove all digital traces from the internal database. While some data is deleted on a regular basis (like Yahoo email), other data can remain online for a very long time.

Sometimes, this data is collected by the Internet Archive, an online digital library. Once archived, it becomes part of our collective cultural heritage. But there is no consensus or standards for how this data should be treated. Users should be invited to consider how they would want their platform data to be collected, stored, preserved, deployed or destroyed, and in which contexts. What should become of our data?

In my research, I interviewed users about their opinions on archiving and deletion. Responses varied drastically: while some were disappointed when they discovered their blogs from the 2000s had vanished, others were horrified at their continued existence.

These varying opinions often fell along differences in context of production such as: the original size of their perceived audience, the sensitivity of the material, and whether the content comprised photographs or text, used vague or explicit language, or contained links to identifiable information like a current Facebook profile.

Privacy protections

It is often debated b y

researchers whether user-generated content should be used for research, and under what conditions.

In Canada, the Tri-Council Policy Statement guidelines for ethical research assert that publicly accessible information has no reasonable expectations of privacy. However, there are interpretations that include social media specific requirements for ethical use. Still, public and private distinctions are not easily made within digital contexts.

The European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has helped shift the standards with which personal data is treated by corporations and beyond, expanding rights to consider restrictions to access, amend, delete and move personal data. Articles 17 and 19 of the GDPR on the right to erasure (the right to be forgotten) are a significant move toward individual digital privacy rights. Those in the EU have legal standing to remove their digital traces, should it contribute towards personal injury, harm or provide inaccurate information.

The right to online safety

However, many have argued that a focus on individual privacy through informed consent is not well placed in digital contexts where privacy is often collectively experienced. Informed consent models also perpetuate expectations that individuals can maintain boundaries around their data and should be able to anticipate future uses of it.

Suggesting that platform users can “take charge” of their digital lives places the impetus on them to constantly selfsurveil and limit their digital traces. Most data production is out of a user’s control, simply because of the metadata generated by moving through online space.

If the web is to be a space of learning, play, exploration and connection, then constantly mitigating future risk by anticipating how and when personal information may be used actively works against those goals.

No country is willing to share the latest technologies: Army chief

PUNE, JAN 1 (AGENCIES): The Chief Of Army Staff General Manoj Pande on Wednesday outlined that no county is willing to share the latest, state-of-the-art technologies in today’s security scenario.

Hence, self-sufficiency in critical technologies and investment in research and development is a strategic imperative that can no longer be ignored.

“The security of the nation can neither be outsourced nor be dependent on the largesse of others,” he added.

General Pande was speaking as a chief guest on the 29th foundation day of the Army Institute of Technology (AIT), which is run under the aegis of the Army Welfare Education Society (AWES), here at Dighi.

He said, “The Indian Army is cognizant of these realities. We have resolved to ensure that our capabil-

ity development is based on the principle of self-reliance and leveraging niche technologies. The Indian Army is taking concrete steps on both these aspects.”

Commenting on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said, “It has brought out key facts such as -the impact of asymmetric warfare, potential of information warfare, communication redundancy, space-based systems, etc - all driven by possession of technological prowess.”

JAMSHEDPUR, FEB 1

(PTI): Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has questioned the returning of a bill by Governor Ramesh Bais, which sought to use 1932 land records to determine the domicile status of people in the state.

Soren asserted that his government had framed the ‘Khatiyan’ or land records-based legislation to provide employment to local residents on priority basis in class 3 and 4 grade

Attacking the BJP without naming it, Soren said feudalistic forces have been “exploiting” adivasis and “accusing us that whatever we do is unconstitutional”.

The CM, who mostly spoke in Santali language, said, “We urged the central government to approve the bill if it fell within its jurisdiction, because 3.25 crore people of the state who possess the ‘Khatiyan’ (land survey record) are Jharkhandi.

SRINAGAR, FEB 1 (PTI):

A massive avalanche hit the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s ski resort Gulmarg on Wednesday, killing two Polish tourists and trapping 21 skiers who were rescued later, police said.

Three teams of 21 foreign nationals and two local guides were at the ski slopes in Hapatkhud Kangdori when the avalanche came rolling down around 12.30 pm, police officials said. The bodies of the two Polish nationals were recovered and moved to hospital for medico-legal procedures.

The other 19 people who were trapped in the snowy heights of Afarwat region, famous for its ski slopes and visited by hundreds of tourists every winter, were rescued by teams of the Baramulla district police. They were taken to safe locations near Gulmarg.

Several people saw the tragedy unfold.

“We saw the dance of death before our eyes. A 20 ft wall of ice fell on the skiers and they got buried under it.

It’s all about nature’s fury,”

All India Congress Committee member Deepak Chinchore from Karnataka who

happened to be at the spot told PTI. Officials said the cable car which ferries tourists up the 14,000 ft Afarwat mountain was used for the rescue operations.

“Avalanche hit the Afarwat peak #HapathKhud at famous ski resort in #Gulmarg. #Rescue operation has been launched by #Baramulla Police alongwith other agencies. Reports of some skiers being trapped are being corroborated. More details shall follow,” a spokesperson of the Baramulla district police said on Twitter soon after the incident.

Union Budget filled with fakery: Cong Rio created mess, says Dr SC Jamir

(From p-1) She also lamented that the budged had no package for Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura, all of which were going to Assembly polls. “Even having a double-engine government if we have not been able to get any special package for Nagaland, it shows that the Central government simply does not care. Ironically, the BJP-NDPP government led by Neiphiu Rio promotes such an attitude of the Centre,” she remarked. Speaking on DoNER funds, Paul pointed out that it was a misconception that the Union budget had nothing to do with DoNER. “DoNER is a separate ministry with a separate minister and it is incumbent upon the Centre to allocate funds for the Northeast and distribute that equitably,” she pointed out.

Meanwhile, NPCC secretary and spokesperson Yanger, who too was present on the occasion, alleged that Nagas had been taken for a ride for long by the State

After making the sensational allegations that his phone is being tapped, Sridhar Reddy addressed a news conference in Nellore on Wednesday.

Rio must step down: KL Chishi

(From p-1) for unity among Nagas. He said people of eastern Nagaland approached the government of India and the latter has taken a serious view of the grievances which now is “leading to separation” from Nagaland.

According to Chishi, this development impacts the electoral process and warrants a stay since election of 40 to the assembly could be vitiated and come under legal scrutiny.

Tracing the genesis for the present socio-political crisis, Chishi said concentration of power and development to a few areas of Nagaland has led to such “disastrous consequences” and squarely held Rio squarely responsible as he has been chief minister since 2003.

While holding Rio mainly responsible for the problem, Chishi demanded that he should voluntarily resign by admitting his weakness and indulgence in favouritism and nepotism and if he failed to do so, then the Governor should dismiss Rio’s government.

Chishi also pointed out that the State of Nagaland Act passed by parliament in 1960 created Nagaland with a legislature having

60 elected members and a separate governor.

Since Nagaland state will be fragmented on being reduced to a 40-member house, Chishi said this will be a violation of the constitution of India vis-à-vis the State of Nagaland Act of 1960. Such being a fit case deemed a violation of the constitution and causing a crisis, Chishi reminded that in such a constitutional crisis, the leader (of the house) “must step down” or else the entire government dismissed.

He said since parliament will have to enact a new law (for division of Nagaland) and in such a case, Article 356 will have to be invoked in the state. Further, Chishi said election to 40 assembly seats (as 20 seat will be under eastern Nagaland) it will be infructuous if election went ahead for 60 members.

He said since the proposed autonomous council and Nagaland are to be fragmented there will be a need for amendment to the constitution of the 60-member house. Chishi said all these clearly depicted the failure of the Rio government and for which he should step down.

government. He accused the present State government of not being able to bring any change in the State despite its 2018 election campaign “Election for solution”, nor solve even smaller issues.

He also questioned the government over poor roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, lack of water supply, etc, in rural areas. “As on leaves the urban areas, he or she will notice that infrastructure has crumbled,” he claimed. Noting that the State government had only been talking, Yanger urged all Nagas not to wait as they had enough time. He also claimed that all development work had taken place during Congress reign in the State. Meanwhile, asked on the number of seats Congress would contesting in the upcoming Assembly election, Paul replied that this would be disclosed soon. She revealed that the party would have a good number of new faces and that there were high chances of women too mak-

ing it to the list of candidates. Referring to PHED minister Jacob Zhimomi’s claim of 60% implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Nagaland, she claimed that she had personally visited villages in the minister’s constituency and found that most of these had only one tap each. She also lamented at the pathetic condition of schools. “The schools in his constituencies have no walls or windows. Forget the computers that the government claims,” she mentioned. The AICC media coordinator also questioned Jacob why doors of schools in his constituency were painted blue from outside when there were no students but only broken benches. She alleged that Jacob was talking in the manner the Modi government and BJP talked. She further stated Congress’ manifesto was being prepared and assured that all key issues would be included. She claimed that the party would “literally vow” to work for betterment of Nagas.

a complaint with the Union Home Ministry. Stating that he suffered humiliations out of respect for Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and worked for the party with sincerity, Sridhar Reddy made it clear that he would not tolerate suspicions. He also remarked that phone tapping was not possible without orders from

(From p-1) a special provision be made to bring these areas through special arrangement for development in the art of governance and so a special provision was made for Tuensang district. However, he lamented that today due to neglect by the present government, eastern Nagas were compelled to approach the Centre directly and leading to proposed new arrangement without having this routed through the elected government in Nagaland.

This spoke “volumes about the status and image of the state under Rio,” said Jamir. He further asked, when the talks was about autonomy of Frontier Nagaland, what happened to the autonomy of Nagaland as guaranteed under the constitution? Asking who was responsible for this, Jamir said

the enlightened people of Nagaland should decide who was to blame. He said today, Nagaland has become a land of factions and groups with multiple authorities who are unauthorised resulting in misgovernance and corruption of the highest order. He said the present leadership in Nagaland has to answer for all these mess. While mouthing about integration, Jamir said instead the trend of disintegration has already set in. Nagaland will no longer be the same again unless there is drastic change in all departments of administration including the polity, he said. Jamir however expressed his best wishes for the proposed Frontier Nagaland Autonomous Council while the political dispensation of Nagaland state has become bleak.

the Chief Minister He claimed that four months ago, an Indian Police Service (IPS) official had told him that his phone was being tapped but he did not believe this as he was not indulging in any illegal business or anti-party activity.

FM announces savings scheme for women

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (PTI):

Union Finance Minister Nir-

mala Sitharaman Wednesday announced a ‘Mahila Samman Saving Certificate’ with a fixed interest rate of 7.5 per cent for two years.

The deposit can be made in the name of a woman or a girl child. The maximum deposit amount has been kept at Rs 2 lakh and the scheme will have a partial withdrawal facility as well.

“One-time new small saving under ‘Mahila Samman Saving Patra’. The deposit facility for the women and girls will be for a period of two years with a rate of interest of 7.5 per cent,” Sitharaman announced. She also said that for the economic empowerment of women under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana National Rural Livelihood Mission, 81 lakh self-help groups have been created by mobilising rural women.

“We will enable these groups to reach the next stage of economic empowerment through the formation of large producer enterprises or collectives with each having several thousand members,” she said. Financial assistance of more than Rs 2.25 lakh crore has been provide d to small farmers

under PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi. About three crore women farmers have been provided Rs 54,000 crore under the scheme, the finance minister said. Sitharaman also announced enhancing the maximum amount of money that can be invested in the senior citizen saving scheme (SCSS) to Rs 30 lakh compared to Rs 15 lakh now.

The postal monthly income scheme also saw an enhancement of limit. In a single name, Rs 9 lakh can be invested as compared to Rs 4.5 lakh now. The enhance-

Old income tax regime vs new income tax regime

Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament on Wednesday, terming it as ‘highly encouraging’. FLO national president Jayanti Dalmia said, “The announcement of a new savings scheme -- ‘Mahila Samman Savings Certificate’ -- for women with fixed interest rate of 7.5 per cent for a period of two years is a welcome step in this direction.”

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (AGENCIES): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday gave a makeover to the new income tax regime, with lower tax rates and introduction of standard deduction. However, the old income tax regime—which allows for deductions such as home loan interest payments—was left untouched.

ment of limits has come as a solace for investors looking for regular income in times of high inflation. The schemes are backed by a sovereign and hence do not carry credit risk.

VCU Peren alleges corruption in RD dept

DIMAPUR, FEB 1 (NPN): Village Chairmen Union (VCU), Peren district has strongly condemned the alleged rampant corruption and lackadaisical attitude of the Rural Development Department in all matters of finance and fund-related issues.

In the event of the failure to respond to its queries and ensure justice, the union also threatened to approach Central agencies such as Enforcement Directorate to examine the affairs of the department, VCU president Hainkieng Hiekha and general secretary Lungziuding Thou said in a press note.

According to VCU, the department, which was highly regarded by rural people for its development works through Central and State government-sponsored schemes and programmes, had remained mostly dormant due to reasons

best known only to department officials.

It alleged that the Grant-inAid (GIA) to village development boards (VDBs), which was one of the major programmes, had not been implemented for more than three years now.

The union further pointed out that the payment of wages to job card holders by the department did not match with the muster roll of MGNREGA fund allocation. It said the fund allocation of this programme was being implemented very randomly, which was very little when compared to the actual amount sanctioned.

The union sought a clarification from the department immediately as to why these corrupt practices had been prevailing and also provide justice to the rural people by releasing the funds immediately.

Asserting that women are at the centre-stage of India’s robust economic growth and strong global position, Damlia demanded that the quantum of allocations for schemes relating to women must be increased and the nodal agencies for women in the country consequently have to be further strengthened. “The Finance Minister also enhanced the maximum deposit level of the senior citizens’ savings scheme from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 30 lakh, which is a great step,” Dalmia said. “This Budget is the first in Amrit Kaal and thus bears huge significance with ‘Saptarshi’ -- the seven priorities -- including inclusive development, reaching the last mile, infrastructure and investment, unleashing the potential, green growth, youth power and the financial sector,” she added.

While the changes to the new income tax regime, which has now been made the default personal tax structure, have received wide coverage, several are confused about whether the amendments to the new income tax regime make it more attractive in comparison to the old regime.

What changes in the new income tax regime?

Among the major announcements made by the finance minister, the most important one was the extension of rebate for annual income up to Rs 7 lakh, applicable to people under the new income tax regime.

“Currently, those with income up to Rs 5 lakh do not pay any income tax in both old and new tax regimes. I propose to increase the rebate limit to Rs 7 lakh in the new tax regime. Thus, persons in the new tax re-

Jet fuel price hiked by 4%

NEW DELHI, FEB 1 (PTI): Jet fuel price on Wednesday was hiked by 4 per cent in line with firming international oil prices but petrol and diesel rates remained on freeze for a record 10th month in running.

Aviation turbine fuel (ATF) price was increased by Rs 4,218 per kilolitre, or 3.9 per cent, to Rs 1,12,356.77 per kl in the national capital, according to a price notification of state-owned fuel retailers.

The increase follows three rounds of reduction since November. The price on January 1 was reduced to Rs 1,08,138.77 per kl from Rs 1,17,587.64. Prior to that, the price was slashed by 2.3 per cent on December 1 and 4.19 per cent on November 1. The rate hike will increase the burden on airlines for whom fuel makes for almost 40 % of the operating cost. ATF price is revised on the 1st of every month

based on the average rate of international benchmark and foreign exchange rates.

Petrol and diesel prices, however, continued to remain on freeze for a record tenth month in a row. Petrol costs Rs 96.72 per litre in the national capital and diesel comes for Rs 89.62. Also, the price of commercial LPG, whose rate too is revised on the 1st of every month, remained unchanged on Wednesday.

A 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder, which is used by hotels, restaurants and other business establishments, continues to cost Rs 1,769 in the national capital. Rate of LPG used in household kitchens remained unchanged at Rs 1,053 per 14.2-kg cylinder. Rates differ from state to state depending on the incidence of local taxes.

gime, with income up to Rs 7 lakh will not have to pay any tax,” the finance minister said.

In addition, a standard deduction of Rs 50,000 has also been introduced under the new income tax slab. This means, a salaried taxpayer would be eligible for an upfront deduction of Rs 50,000 from the total taxable income under the new income tax regime as well -- earlier, this deduction was only available under the old structure.

Unlike the new income tax regime, slabs under the old tax structure have not been changed under the budget – income up to Rs 2.5 lakh exempt from tax, 5 per cent tax on income over Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, 20 per cent tax on income above Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh and 30 per cent on income above Rs 10 lakh.

The old tax regime has been the mainstay for taxpayers in the country despite higher tax slabs, as it offers more scope for tax deductions to individuals with higher annual incomes and more investments.

Opt new tax regime if deduction, exemption claims le ss than Rs. 3.75 lakh: A taxpayer whose

deductions and exemption claims are less than Rs 3.75 lakh annually would be advised to opt for the new income tax regime and pay less tax than they gave in the old regime, a senior finance ministry officer said Wednesday.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting the Budget for 2023-24, said the government has made the new income tax regime more attractive for taxpayers bringing “substantial changes” in its structure for the benefit of the middle class.

The minister later told reporters during a press conference that the government wants to make the new tax regime attractive enough and compliance should not be burdensome on taxpayers.

However, if someone feels the old regime is more beneficial, that person can continue in it, she said, adding, “The ultimate interest is to make the simpler (new) regime more attractive.”

The old tax regime still looks more lucrative for people with higher annual incomes, but only if they have the investments to claim enough deductions.

However, for individuals who do not want to invest

in too many long-term taxsaving schemes or do not have a housing loan, the new income tax regime could be the answer.

No taxes reduced, says Chidambaram: Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday stressed that no taxes have been reduced except for the small number who have opted for the new tax regime.

“No indirect taxes have been reduced. There is no cut in the cruel and irrational GST rates. There is no reduction in the prices of petrol, diesel, cement, fertilizers etc. There is no cut in the numerous surcharges and cesses which are, anyway, not shared with the state governments,” Chidambaram said.

Chidambaram alleged the government is also “determined to push the ‘new’ tax regime for which there are few takers for a variety of reasons.”

“Besides, making the new tax regime the default option is grossly unfair and will rob the ordinary tax payer of the meagre social security that he may get under the old tax regime,” he said.

Peshawar blast: 17 suspects held as Munir directs Gens. to eliminate threat

PERTH, FEB 1 (IANS): A tiny radioactive capsule missing in the Australian outback was found on Wednesday after days of searching.

In a press conference, the Emergency Service Minister for Western Australia (WA), Stephen Dawson, announced the 8 mm by 6 mm capsule was found by search crews earlier in the morning, reports Xinhua news agency.

The caesium-136 capsule was reported last week, prompting an emergency search along the 1,400 km route of the truck it fell off.

It was found by a team from the Australian Nuclear

Philippine quake revised down to magnitude 6

MANILA, FEB 1 (IANS):

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology revised the magnitude of an earthquake down to 6, which rattled the southern Philippines on Wednesday.

The institute first reported the magnitude of the quake as 6.1. It said the quake, which occurred at 6:44 p.m. local time, hit at a depth of 11 km, about 14 km northeast of New Bataan town in Davao De Oro province, Xinhua news agency reported.

An updated report said the earthquake hit at a depth of 27 km, about 12 km northeast of New Bataan town. The institute said that the tectonic quake will trigger aftershocks and cause damage. There were no initial reports of damage or casualties. The institute said that the quake was also felt strongly in Davao City and many areas in Mindanao, the Philippines’ second-largest island.

Science and Technology Organisation and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services south of the town of Newman -- more than 1,100 km north of the storage facility it was being transported to in Perth.

“I do want to emphasize this is an extraordinary result,” Dawson said.

“The search crews have quite literally found the needle in the haystack.”

The search vehicle was travelling at 70 km per hour along the Great Northern Highway when specialist equipment detected radiation. Portable search equipment then found it two meters from

Authorities had warned that the capsule posed a significant public health risk, warning that anyone who came too close or touched it without protection could suffer from radiation burns or sickness.

“Once the capsule has been secured, we will survey the site to ensure there is no contamination in the surrounding area,” Darren Klemm, the Fire and Emergency Services Commissioner, said.

“In extremely unlikely circumstance that the capsule leaks we will remediate the area.” The government has launched an investigation into the incident.

Mining giant Rio Tinto had apologised for losing the device, which could have posed a serious danger if handled.

Haley, 51, is the twoterm Governor of South Carolina and the former US Ambassador to the United Nations.

When she enters the race, Haley will be the first contender to join the contest against her former boss, who is currently the sole Republican seeking his party’s 2024 nomination.

Trump, 76, launched his White House bid last year. Haley could release a video signalling her plans as soon as this week, according to the Washington Post. According to an invitation soon going out to her backers, Haley’s advertised “special announcement” will come February 15 at the The Shed at the Charleston Visitor Center, a downtown gathering spot

that could draw hundreds of supporters into the heart of the city’s tourism district, The Post and Courier reported.

“The confirmation that she is entering the race came on January 31 from a member of Haley’s inner circle,” the Charleston, South Carolina-based daily reported.

Haley famously said previously that she would not seek to challenge Trump if he ran again, but there has been a shift in her stance in recent times as she said the US needs to look toward a different path.

“It’s time for a new generation,” she tweeted recently.

Building alliances top priority: Hicks tells Ajit Doval

Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon, in a read out of the meeting, said Hicks reiterated that building alliances and partnerships is a top priority for the department, and integral to the ongoing implementation of the US National Defence Strategy.

The US’ 2022 National Defence Strategy calls China a “growing multi-domain threat.”

WASHINGTON, FEB1 (PTI): US Deputy Defence Secretary Dr Kathleen Hicks told National Security Advisor Ajit Doval that building alliances and partnerships are a “top priority” for her department, the Pentagon has said, amidst the Indo-Pacific region’s increasingly contested strategic environment and China’s aggressive behaviour.

Hicks said this during a meeting with Doval here and discussed priorities for the US-India bilateral defence partnership, the Pentagon said on Tuesday.

It said the discussions also included strengthening

Although the US lays no claims to the disputed waters, it has challenged China’s growing territorial claims in the South China Sea by deploying warships and fighter jets to assert freedom of navigation and overflight patrols in the strategically vital region.

PESHAWAR/ISLAMABAD, FEB 1 (PTI): Pakistan’s security agencies arrested 17 suspects in connection with the suicide blast in a high-security zone mosque in Peshawar that killed 101 people, including 97 policemen, as Army chief Gen Asim Munir vowed zero tolerance for terror groups and directed his generals to eliminate the threat of militancy. A Taliban suicide bomber who was present in the front row during the Zuhr (afternoon) prayers on Monday blew himself up, causing the roof to collapse on the worshippers. Sources said that the security agencies have arrested 17 suspects involved in the devastating blast - the deadliest attack on the security personnel in decades in Pakistan. The arrests have been made from close vicinity of the Police Lines area where the mosque is located and the suspects were shifted to interrogation cell for investigation, sources told PTI on condition of anonymity.

In a statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Wednesday that the

entire nation and institutions are united to eliminate the menace of terrorism.

Describing police as a front line force in the fight against terrorism, the prime minister said that they will be further strengthened and equipped with modern weapons. Speaking at a meeting of the federal cabinet in Islamabad on Wednesday, Sharif expressed serious concerns over the resurgence of terrorist elements especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan.

The Prime Minister said that if immediate and effective steps were not taken, the despicable incidents might spread to other parts of the country.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban

Pakistan (TTP), known as the Pakistani Taliban, claimed responsibility for the Peshawar mosque suicide attack, saying it was part of a revenge attack for slain TTP commander Umar Khalid Khurasani who was killed in Afghanistan in August last.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s top generals have vowed that perpetrators of the Peshawar terrorist attack will be brought to exemplary justice.

General Munir, who presided over the 255th Corps Commanders’ Conference held at general headquarters in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, said that the military was determined to eliminate the threat of militancy from the country.

The army chief referred to the Peshawar mosque attack and said that “such immoral and cowardly acts cannot shake the resolve of the nation rather reinvigorate our determination to succeed in ongoing war against terror with zero tolerance for any terrorist entity,” according to a statement issued by the army.

‘Not physically capable’: Ozzy Osbourne cancels UK, Europe tour

Black Sabbath rocker

Ozzy Osbourne has cancelled his UK and Europe tour after saying that he is “not physically capable” of performing.

Atwo-day 1st Myriad Fest organised by Immanuel College, began on Wednesday under the theme “Carpe Diem” with IRS

Additional Commissioner, Central Goods and Services Tax, Dimapur Commissionerate, Sashi Wapang Lanu as the guest speaker.

Encouraging the students, Lanu reminded that associating and participating in all activities during college days are one of the most important aspects of college life.

Stressing on the theme, Lanu opined that one way to see capabilities and

potential in an individual is to look beyond being good at studies. He recalled the time during the training, when he first joined IRS academy after successfully being selected in the UPSC civil service exams where he found that his interest in music and playing guitar right from high school and college days were the greatest assets to take him forward, which helped him opened many doors and opportunities.

He encouraged the students to participate in any college events and compete with other institutions in the filed of sports, debates, quiz

During the two-day fest, there will be various activities including, photography competition, poetry slam, voice of the Myriad, Mr & Miss Myriad, dance competition, art competition, cosplay, reel making, spelling bee and mobile gaming.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by, asst. professor, Dept. of History, Imjungla Imchen, welcomeaddress by principal, Immanuel College Th. Sharatchandra Singh, invocation by asst. professor, Dept. of Education, Temjen Longkumer and special number by Kewimelin. (Staff Reporter)

English singer Adele is Rolling in the Deep in a pool of tears. The singer burst into tears after seeing a man with a picture of his late wife on his phone in the crowd at her concert.

The ‘Easy On Me’ hitmaker grew more and more emotional as she walked through the audience at her Las Vegas residency show at The Colosseum At Caesars Palace, reports ‘Female First UK’. After seeing the picture close-up, Adele attempted to continue with her performance of ‘Someone Like You’, before struggling to hold back her tears as she dedicated the tear-jerking

ballad to the man. She began: “When I walk through the crowd, I wish you could see what I can see. Because I know I talk to a few people every night, but then I just see little stories of people happening.”

The overwhelmed singer continued: “There was a man, he’s just there, holding his phone up. I think that’s his wife on the phone, and I don’t think she’s here, and it just really moved me. I’m so sorry for your loss, and I didn’t realise what you were showing me until I was over here.”

She added: “I see these little pockets of people’s lives as I walk through and it’s so beautiful.” (IANS)

Kate Bush leads 14 nominees on Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2023 ballot

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s slate of 14 nominees for the Class of 2023 is out.

The list runs the gamut from Kate Bush, who’s been nominated three times before but still stands an especially good chance of getting in now, to Willie Nelson, who could follow fellow country icon Dolly Parton in, to Missy Eillott and the White Stripes, both of whom are late-1990s icons being put up for the honour in their first year of eligibility, reports ‘Variety’.

The full lineup of artistes selected as 2023

contenders by the Hall’s nominating committee includes Kate Bush, Sheryl

Crow, Missy Elliott, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/ New Order, Cyndi Lauper,

George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Soundgarden, The Spinners, A Tribe Called Quest, The White Stripes and Warren Zevon.

A slight majority of the 14 nominees -- eight in all -- are on a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ballot for the first time, according to ‘Variety’. They are Missy Elliott, Warren Zevon, Willie Nelson, The White Stripes, Sheryl Crow, Cyndi Lauper, George Michael and Joy Division/ New Order.

The remaining six are returning after being

nominated but not voted in before. Kate Bush didn’t make the final cut when previously nominated in 2018, 2021 and 2022, but would seem to have the wind at her back now, with her oldie ‘Running Up That Hill’, due to ‘Stranger Things’, having oddly become one of the biggest hits of the past year.

‘Variety’ adds that Rage Against the Machine is another act that appeared on the ballot last year and is up again for a fourth time; the band was also nominated in 2018, 2019 and 2021. (IANS)

The black metal legend, 74, recently had extensive spinal surgery following a fall at his home in 2019, which had further aggravated injuries from a near-fatal quad bike crash in 2003, reports ‘Mirror. co.uk’.

Announcing the news to fans, Ozzy said that it was “probably one of the hardest things (he’s) ever had to share” and that he “never would have imagined that (his) touring days would have ended this way”.

Explaining that his body is “still physically weak” he shared his despair at “disappointing” fans. In a statement, accessed by ‘Mirror.co.uk’, he wrote: “This is probably one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to share with my loyal fans. As you may know, four years ago, this month, I had a major accident, where I damaged my spine. My one and only purpose during this time has been to get back on stage. My singing voice is fine. However, after three operations, stem cell treatments, endless physical therapy sessions,

and most recently ground breaking Cybernics (HAL) Treatment, my body is still physically weak”. He continued in the note, “I am honestly humbled by the way you’ve all patiently held onto your tickets for all this time, but in all good conscience, I have now come to the realisation that I’m not physically capable of doing my upcoming European/ UK tour dates, as I know I couldn’t deal with the travel required. Believe me when I say that the thought of disappointing my fans really F***S ME UP, more than you will ever know”.

“Never would I have imagined my touring days would have ended this way. My team is currently coming up with ideas for where I will be able to perform without having to travel from city to city and country to country”, the note further read. He concluded the note as he wrote, “I want to thank my family.... my band.... my crew.... my longtime friends, Judas Priest, and of course my fans for their endless dedication, loyalty, and support, and for giving me the life that I never dreamed that I would have. I love you all”. (IANS)

Suryakumar Yadav retains No. 1 position in ICC T20 rankings

NEW DELHI, FEB 1

(IANS): India’s middle order batter Suryakumar Yadav retained his No. 1 position with career-high rating points in the latest ICC T2O rankings released on Wednesday.

Suryakumar has a rating of 910 points after he stroked quickfire innings of 47 during the first match of India’s ongoing series against New Zealand in Ranchi as the exciting righthander maintained his healthy lead at the top of the T20I rankings for batters.

While the Indian batter played a more composed knock of unbeaten 26 in the second match of the series, the 32-year-old dropped back to a total of 908 rating points as a result. He will have an opportunity to improve on his record in the third and deciding match of the series in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

The current rating points mean Suryakumar remained within striking distance of England batter Dawid Malan in the race to hold the highest rating of all time for Men’s T20I batters.

Malan achieved a rating of 915 points in Cape

Town back in 2020, but Suryakumar now holds the second-highest rating of all time for T20I batters following his recent heroics with the willow.

Surya’s teammate Washington Sundar meanwhile galloped to 104th position. On the other hand, New Zealand’s Finn Allen (up eight places to 19th) and Daryl Mitchell (up nine places to 29th) have also gained in the latest rankings update. In the T20I bowling rankings, India spinners Yuzvendra Chahal jumped six places to 34th and Kuldeep Yadav gained 54 spots to 81st. New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner is in the top 10 while Michael Bracewell has moved from 58th to 37th position.

A highly skillful insideleft during his prime in the 1960s, Dey made five appearances for India, with his only goal for the country being an all-important winner against the Republic of Korea in the Bronze Medal match of the 1966 Merdeka Cup in Kuala Lumpur, the only goal in the game.

At the domestic level, he had the honour of winning the Santosh Trophy twice in 1962, 1969. Having played as a forward for East Bengal, he netted 84 goals and also captained the club in 1968.

Dey holds the distinction of winning the Calcutta Football League and IFA Shield double thrice in 1966, 1970, and 1973, and has etched his name in Indian Football folklore by scoring in two IFA Shield finals against BNR (1966) and Iranian side PAS Club (1970),

which still stands today as the fastest goal scored by a player after coming on as a substitute in the competition. The 1966 CFL was a marquee tournament for Dey as he scored in each of the first nine matches. Apart from these, he also won the Durand Cup (1967, 1970), Rovers Cup (1967, 1969, 1973), amongst other tournaments. Dey also went on to play for Mohun Bagan in 1971, winning the Rovers Cup again that year.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) condoled the demise of the former India International. “Former India star Parimal Dey’s demise comes as a big loss for Indian Football. Janglada, as he was known to us, was one of the best schemers of the 1960s, and remains in the hearts and minds of the fans till date. My thoughts go out to his family,” said AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey.

NBA: LeBron James’ triple-double sinks Knicks in OT

NEW YORK, FEB 1

(AGENCIES): LeBron

James moved closer to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s NBA scoring record and gained two spots on the all-time assists list Tuesday night, when the Los Angeles Lakers superstar posted his first triple-double of the season to spark a 129-123 overtime win over the host New York Knicks.

Dennis Schroder hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer with 3:14 left in overtime to start a decisive 7-0 run by the Lakers, who snapped a twogame losing streak. Jalen Brunson scored a game-high 37 points for the Knicks, who have lost two straight and six of eight.

James, who missed Los Angeles’ Monday defeat to the Brooklyn Nets with a sore left ankle and left foot, finished with 28 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds.

He now has 38,299 points in his career, 89 points shy of breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s record.

James’ eighth and

ninth assists of the game -- leading to Troy Brown Jr.’s 3-pointer and a dunk by Thomas Bryant on consecutive possessions early in the fourth quarter -- vaulted James past Mark Jackson (10,334 assists) and Steve Nash (10,335 assists) and into fourth place on the alltime list. James ended the night at 10,338.

Nuggets 122, Pelicans

113 Nikola Jokic had 26

finished with 16 points for the Pelicans, who took their ninth straight loss.

Heat 100, Cavaliers 97 Jimmy Butler scored a game-high 23 points to pace four scorers in double figures as visiting Miami beat Cleveland.

Caleb Martin, Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro each added 18 points for Miami, which is now 1-1 on a four-game road trip. Adebayo grabbed 11 rebounds and Martin hauled in 10 for the Heat, who won for the fourth time in five games.

points, 18 rebounds and 15 assists for his NBA-leading 16th triple-double while Jamal Murray poured in 32 points as host Denver beat New Orleans.

Kentavious CaldwellPope and Aaron Gordon scored 15 points apiece and Michael Porter Jr. added 13 for the Nuggets, who won for just the second time in five games. CJ McCollum and Herbert Jones scored 21 each and Brandon Ingram

Evan Mobley led Cleveland with 19 points while Jarrett Allen had 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland each scored 16 points for the Cavaliers, who haven’t won back-to-back games since Jan. 2-4, when they defeated the Chicago Bulls and Phoenix Suns.

Under-19 cricket team for winning the World Cup.

What a fabulous achievement. I can assure you that the entire nation and wellwishers of Indian cricket will celebrate and cherish this victory for years to come,” Tendulkar was quoted as saying in a BCCI video, released on their social media handles. The 49-year-old also recalled his introduction to the sport and hailed the pioneers in women’s cricket for laying a solid platform for young girls to excel in cricket. “My dream started in 1983 when I was just 10 years young. I would like to

thank the past players who made it possible for the girls in the country to dream big.

Shantha Rangaswamy, Diana Edulji, Anjum Chopra, Mithali Raj, Jhulan (Goswami), and many others,” he said. The World Cupwinning cricketer also hailed the victory of the young cricketers. “By winning this World Cup, you have given a dream to young girls in India, to represent the country. The beginning of the WPL is going to be the biggest thing. I believe in equality for men and women, and not just in sports. There should be equal opportunity,” he further said.

Pozdnyakov welcomed moves by the IOC last week to allow Russian athletes to participate its competitions after the IOC said “a pathway for athletes’ participation in competition under strict conditions should therefore be further explored.” In the meantime, the ROC head was against “additional conditions” imposed on Russian athletes.

“Russians must participate exactly on the same conditions as all other athletes. Any additional conditions or criteria are unwelcome, especially any that have political overtones, which are completely unacceptable for the Olympic movement,” he told Russian news agencies earlier on Tuesday.

3rd T20I: India beat NZ by a record 168 runs

AHMEDABAD, FEB 1

(IANS): A sensational maiden T20I century by Shubman Gill (126 not out off 63) followed by a dominating performance by the bowlers led India to a massive 168-run win in the third and final T20I and 2-1 series victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium, here on Wednesday.

Gill, who didn’t have much success in the first two games, put on a batting show, smashing the Black Caps’ bowlers all-round the world’s largest cricket stadium. Apart from Gill, the likes of Rahul Tripathi (44 off 22), Hardik Pandya (30 off 17) and Suryakumar Yadav (24 off 13) also made vital contributions with the bat.

Chasing a mammoth total, New Zealand were off to a disastrous start as Arshdeep Singh and Hardik Pandya ripped through their top order. A couple of superb reflex catches by Suryakumar Yadav at slips also helped India’s cause.

The likes of Finn Allen (3) and Devon Conway (1), Mark Chapman (0) and Glenn Phillips had no answers against Arshdeep and Hardik and they got out cheaply to leave visitors in deep deep trouble at 7/4 in 2.4 overs. Very soon, Umran

Malik also joined the fun by cleaning up Michael Bracewell, who got troubled by the extra pace as New Zealand’s struggle continued.

Daryl Mitchell (35) fought a lone battle for New Zealand but it was not enough as they were bowled out for just 66 runs in 12.1 overs to suffer a massive defeat.

Hardik Pandya was the most-successful bowler for India with his superb figures of 4/16, while Umran

Malik (2/9), Shivam Mavi (2/12) and Arshdeep Singh (2/16) also picked two wickets each.

Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first but they lost the wicket of Ishan Kishan very early. The left-hander, who is going through a poor form, was trapped leg before by a flattish delivery from Michael Bracewell in the second over of the innings.

Chelsea smash British transfer record to sign Benfica’s Fernandez

LONDON, FEB 1 (AGENCIES): Chelsea announced the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica on Wednesday after days of complex negotiations between the clubs to secure the Argentina midfielder for a British transfer record 106.8 million pounds ($131.46 million).

As the deadline day approached its end on Tuesday, it appeared a deal might not be reached but a statement from Benfica confirmed that it had been done shortly before 2300 GMT.

Premier League club Chelsea announced the signing on Wednesday 1000 GMT via a video on Twitter, which showed a clip of a clock ticking down, making a reference to race against time to sign the World Cup winner.

Benfica’s statement said Chelsea would pay the contract release fee for the 22-year-old, who has signed an eight-and-a-half year deal with the London club.

It takes Chelsea’s transfer spending in Janu-

ary alone to close to 300 million pounds and to more than 500 million pounds since last May’s takeover by an investment group led by American Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Boehly has sanctioned more spending in this transfer window than the combined total of all clubs in Europe’s other big leagues -- the Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1.

According to media reports, Chelsea will pay the release fee in several

instalments -- the number of which became a sticking point for the deal until late on Tuesday.

“Sport Lisboa e Benfica - Futebol, SAD informs that it has reached an agreement with Chelsea FC for the sale of all the rights of the player Enzo Fernandez, for an amount of 121,000,000 euros,” a Benfica statement read.

Benfica signed Fernandez in July 2022 from River Plate, who will also benefit from the deal courtesy of a 25% sell-on clause. Fernandez bagged four goals and seven assists in 29 games in all competitions for Benfica this season.

His fee eclipses the 100 million pounds Manchester City paid Aston Villa for England midfielder Jack Grealish in 2021. Fernandez was instrumental in Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign in Qatar, breaking into the starting lineup and playing every game, scoring one of the goals in a vital victory over Mexico in the group phase.

the pressure was on Shubman Gill and Rahul Tripathi to give India some momentum and they did it with perfection by hitting multiple boundaries. While Gill played traditional shots to fetch fours, Tripathi brought adventurous shots to get boundaries and six to take India to 57/1 at the end of the Power-play.

Even after the Powerplay, Tripathi was in no mood to drop the intent and he hit Kiwi spinners in back-to-back overs to keep the momentum going. However, his entertaining knock came to an end when he pulled a half-tracker by Mitchell Santner down the fine-leg fielder’s throat.

The stage was set for Suryakumar Yadav to come and join the party and he cut a short-of-a-length delivery from Sodhi for a boundary as India reached 102/2 at the halfway stage. On the other hand, Gill brought up another easy-looking halfcentury off 35 deliveries.

Suryakumar Yadav, who played his trademark six over fine leg against Sodhi, couldn’t continue his attacking innings longer courtesy of a superb one-handed diving catch at mid-wicket, leaving India at 125/3 after 12.3 overs. On the other hand, Gill, who was timing

the ball to perfection and picked up his scoring rate with boundaries and six to race into the 90s and bring a quick-fire half-century stand with Hardik Pandya.

Whatever New Zealand were throwing his way, Gill was finding a way to send it over the boundary line and he played his trademark cover drive to hit a boundary and bring up his maiden T20I hundred off 54 boundaries. With this, Gill became the youngest Indian (23-year-old) to score a T20I century and also the fifth batter from the country after Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, K.L. Rahul and Virat to score centuries in all three formats.

His sensational innings continued after the century as Gill clubbed Benjamin Lister for six and boundaries to score 17 runs in the 19th over. Hardik Pandya, who was picking boundaries at regular intervals, got out to Daryl Mitchell in the first ball of the 20th over.

Brief scores: India 234/4 in 20 overs (Shubman Gill 126 not out, Rahul Tripathi 44, Hardik Pandya 30; Daryl Mitchell 1-6) beat New Zealand 66 all-out in 12.1 overs (Daryl Mitchell 35; Umran Malik 2-9, Shivam Mavi 2-12, Arshdeep Singh 2-16) by 168 runs.

Sports ministry gets Rs. 700 cr-plus boost in Union Budget

NEW DELHI, FEB 1

(PTI): In a year when the Indian athletes will compete at the Asian Games and prepare for 2024 Paris Olympics, the Sports Ministry has got a fillip with the government allocating Rs 3,397.32 crore, an increase of Rs 723.97 crore, in the Union Budget here on Wednesday.

The amount is more than the revised budget of the previous financial year (2022-23) when the ministry received Rs 2,673.35 crore, as against the actual allocation of Rs 3,062.60 crore.

One of the reasons for the reduced revised allocation for 2022-23 could be the postponement of the Hangzhou Asian Games, which will be held this year.

The ministry’s flagship programme, ‘Khelo India -- National Programme for Development of Sports’ continues to be the government’s priority, with it being allotted Rs 1,045 crore as against the revised allocation of Rs 606 crore during the previous financial year. This is an increase of Rs 439 crore and points to the government’s commitment to the programme,

which over the years, has shown the potential to produce athletes for major global events such as the Olympics, Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI), which takes care of organising national camps for athletes, providing infrastructure and equipment to athletes, appointment of coaches and maintaining sports infrastructure, among others, has seen a Rs 36.09 crore increase in its budgetary allocation from the previous year’s revised expenditure of Rs 749.43 crore. Their allocation for 2023-24 stands at Rs 785.52 crore.

The National Sports Federations (NSFs) have received an increased allocation of Rs 45 crore, from previous year’s revised bud-

get of Rs 280 crore and will now get Rs 325 crore.

The National AntiDoping Agency (NADA), affiliated to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), and the National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL), which earlier received funding from SAI, will now get it directly.

A provision has been made in this year’s budget to provide NADA a funding of Rs 21.73 crore, while NDTL, which conducts the tests, will receive Rs 19.50 crore. With countries across the world striving for sporting excellence and paying more attention to sports science and scientific training of athletes, this year’s budget has also made a provision of Rs 13 crore for National Centre of Sports Science and Research.

Saudi Arabia confirmed as host of AFC Asian Cup 2027

MANAMA (BAHRAIN), FEB 1 (IANS): The Member Associations of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Wednesday confirmed Saudi Arabia as the host for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 at the 33rd AFC Congress held here.

The l andmark decision to give the hosting rights to Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF) marks the first time Asia’s crown jewel will be staged in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, whose national side ranks amongst the best performers in the tournament’s history, having clinched the coveted Continental crown on three occasions -- in 1984, 1988 and 1996.

In his address to the 33rd AFC Congress, Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, the AFC President said: “Let me congratulate the Saudi Arabian Football Federation for being selected as the hosts for the AFC Asian Cup 2027.

“This will be the first time the tournament will be staged in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we look forward to working closely with the SAFF and the Sau-

di Arabian Government to deliver a memorable AFC Asian Cup for our fans and players in 2027,” he told the delegates on Wednesday.

HRH Prince Abdul Aziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sport and Chairman of the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee, who led the presentation to the AFC Congress, said: “It is an

honour to have been chosen as hosts for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 and this is a historic and exciting moment for football in Saudi Arabia.

“We believe the best days of Asian football are yet to come and we see this tournament as an opportunity to showcase all that’s great about the game here. Our experience in hosting major sporting and enter-

tainment events means that we are ready to deliver and ready to warmly welcome fans from across Asia and around the world.

“This will be an incredible AFC Asian Cup, made even more special by the passion of the Saudi fans. I would like to thank the AFC and all the Member Associations that have been involved in this pro-

cess,” he said. India had bid to host the Asian Cup 2027 and was shortlisted along with Saudi Arabia but the newlyelected Executive Committee office-bearers of the AllIndia Football Federation (AIFF) led by president Kalyan Choubey withdrew the bid as it did meet its proposals for Vision 2047 document.

VILNIUS, FEB 1 (AGEN-

CIES): Latvia joined Kyiv on Wednesday in threatening to boycott the 2024 Olympics and qualifiers if Russian and Belarusian athletes are included while the war continues in Ukraine.

Athletes from Russia and Belarus, which aided President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine a year ago, have been largely banned from international competitions since.

But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has opened a door to their competition in qualifiers and potential participation

as neutrals at the 2024 Paris Games.

“For as long as there is an ongoing war in Ukraine, participation of the Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Olympic Games under any flag is unacceptable,” Latvia’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) said in a statement.

Russia and Belarus’ presence at the Olympics would be an “encouragement for further escalation of warfare, and normalization of war crimes and brutal violence,” it added, saying Latvians should not take part in any competitions with athletes from

Latvia, which borders Russia, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine together with Baltic neighbours Estonia and Lithuanian. But neither of those nations are considering boycotts of Paris, their Olympic committee heads told media.

Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022, with some of its troops entering from territory in Belarus, and has been bombarding Ukrainian cities since.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s government has also threatened to boycott the Olympics, but Russia has said a campaign to exclude it from international sport will fail.

Moscow says it is defending its own security and denies accusations of widespread atrocities in Ukraine.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will be held from July 26-Aug. 11 and the Paralympics from Aug. 28-Sept. 8. Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics said he and his counterparts from Estonia, Lithuania and Poland had agreed on Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian participation in the Olympics was “unacceptable” while the war continued.

The Baltic ministers of sport will meet on Thursday to discuss a joint appeal to the IOC to ban Russian and Belarusian sportsmen from all international competitions, Lithuanian Minister of Education, Science and Sport Jurgita Siugzdiniene said on Wednesday.

Djokovic played with a three-centimetre (1.2 inches) tear in his hamstring during his run to a recordextending 10th Australian Open title, tournament director Craig Tiley said on Wednesday.

The Serbian, who suffered the hamstring injury en-route to winning the warm-up title in Adelaide, won the season-opening major after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in Sunday’s final for a men’s record 22nd Grand Slam title, matching Rafael Nadal’s haul.

“This guy I did see, he had a three-centimetre tear in his hammy,” Tiley told SEN Sportsday. “Absolutely (I saw the scans), the doctors are going to tell you the truth.

“There was a lot of speculation about whether it was true or not, it’s hard to believe that they can do what they do with those kinds of injuries.

“He’s remarkable, to deal with it extremely professionally.”

Djokovic’s coach Goran Ivanisevic said after the final that the world number one battled the injury, which would have forced most players to quit.

“He’s so focused on everything he does, with every single minute of the day,” Tiley added. “That’s

what he eats, what he drinks, when he does it, how he does it.

“There’s no breakdown or mental breakdown in anything that he does. He’s been through a lot and to win 10 Australian Opens, I don’t think that’s ever going to be repeated... He’ll hold a significant place in the history of the Australian Open.”
