Oppn-less Govt: focus on Naga pol solution and ENPO demand

KOHIMA, MAR 12 (NPN):

Close on the heels of the swearing-in of the 12-member PDA 2.0 alliance led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio which was followed by the appointment of 24 elected members from both NDPP and BJP, barring one NDPP member- there are speculations of the ‘expected’ formation of the third oppositionless government is gaining ground.

Nagaland Post on its March 4 issue reported on opinions of several nonNDPP and non-BJP parties that the recently elected members who will be take oath as members of the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly, were expecting to be part of the formation of the third opposition-less government.

The pre-poll alliance of

NDPP with 25 and BJP with 12 elected members are in absolute majority with 37 in a house of 60. NDPP increased its tally from 18 in 2018 to 25 in 2023 while the BJP won the same number of 12 seats both in 2018 and 2023. While NDPP functionaries remained tight lipped

about an opposition-less government, BJP appeared less enthusiastic especially with regard to NCP as the latter is not part of NDA. The NPP is part of BJP-led NEDA headed by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The LJP and RPI are also part of NDA at the Centre. The JD(U) which won one seat in Nagaland was dissolved when party unit expressed support to Rio without obtaining approval of the national leaders.

Even if not an ideal situation the opposition-less government has been justified on the basis of getting all MLAs and society including Naga stakeholders on board especially since solution including ENPO issue is likely to dominate the political landscape in the next coming months. Leaders of parties which have expressed support

to the Rio-led coalition government include: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by founder-president Sharad Pawar with 7 members; National People’s Party led by its national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K. Sangama with 5 members; JD (U) with one member, NPF, Lok Jan Shakti (Ram Vilas), Republican Party of India (Ramdas Athwale) with 2 members each and 4 Independents, have expressed support to the coalition government. Even though the nonPDA parties have 23 elected members, they have shown no inclination to form a postpoll opposition alliance. This is because most of the elected members of several parties are considered close associates of either chief minister Neiphiu Rio or ticket aspirants of BJP.

Centre opposes same sex marriage at Supreme Court

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Ahead of a Supreme Court hearing on the legalisation of same sex marriages, the move had received vehement opposition from the Centre. The government said that such a move would not be ‘comparable with the Indian family unit’. Centre opined that same-sex relationships and heterosexual relationships are clearly distinct classes which cannot be treated identically.

In its affidavit, filed before the court, scheduled to hear the matter on Monday, Centre said living together as partners and having sexual relationship by same sex individuals (which is decriminal-

NEW DELHI, MAR 12

(IANS): A total of 3,038 lab-confirmed cases of various subtypes of influenza including H3N2 have been reported till March 9 by states, as per the latest data available on IDSP-IHIP. This includes 1,245 cases in January; 1,307 in February and 486 cases till March 9.

ised now) is not comparable with the Indian family unit concept, urging the court to reject challenges to the current legal framework lodged by LGBTQ+ couples.

“Amongst Hindus, it is a sacrament, a holy union for performance of reciprocal duties between a man and a woman. In Muslims, it is a contract but again is envisaged only between a biological man and a biological woman. It will, therefore, not be permissible to pray for a writ of this court to change the entire legislative policy of the country deeply embedded in religious and societal norms,” Centre said. The affidavit came as a counter to demands raised

by several petitioners seeking legal recognition of same sex marriages. The government asserted that the petition was “wholly unsustainable, untenable and misplaced”.

“It must be kept in mind that granting recognition and conferring rights recognising human relations which has its consequences in law, and privileges, is in essence a legislative function and can never be the subject matter of judicial adjudication,” it said.

Centre said that marriage was recognised “statutorily, religiously and socially” as a union between a man and a woman. It added that the heterogeneous institution of marriage was also accepted by

the Indian society based upon its own cultural and societal values which are recognized by the competent legislature. “There is an intelligible differentia (normative basis) which distinguishes those within the classification (heterosexual couples) from those left out (same-sex couples).

This classification has a rational relation with the object sought to be achieved (ensuring social stability via recognition of marriages),” it said. Centre said that despite the decriminalization of Sec 377 of the IPC, the petitioners “cannot claim a fundamental right for same-sex marriage to be recognised under the laws of the country”.

ITANAGAR, MAR 12

(IANS): A total of 15 militants belonging to Eastern Naga National Government (ENNG) led by its president Tosha Mossang surrendered to the Arunachal Pradesh government and deposited a huge cache of arms and ammunition at a function on Sunday.

The militants, active in the state’s three eastern districts of Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, laid down their arms at a ‘Homecoming Ceremony’ at the state police headquarters in presence of chief minister Pema Khandu.

Addressing the function, Khandu said that the Central

DIPHU, MAR 12: In its continued fight against trafficking of drugs and other narcotics, Karbi Anglong Police on Sunday seized 5 kg heroin worth Rs 30 crore from a vehicle in Khatkhati area. The vehicle was enroute Nagaon from Dimapur. Police claimed that the consignment was concealed and packed in 390 soap cases.

“The consignment was concealed by making a secret chamber in upper part of the vehicle’s body. The secret chamber was welded properly to hide the consignment,” SDPO Bokajan John Das told the media.

Based on specific input, the police set up a naka along the highway near SBI Khatkhati branch and intercepted the white Bolero (AS 09 J 4746) that was coming from Dimapur around 10 a.m. Police arrested the driver Mohammad Fujel Ahmed (41), resident of Islam Nagar, Hojai district Assam. Upon interrogation, the police claimed that Fujel confessed that the consignment from Dimapur was supposed to be dropped in a particular place near the Nagaon bypass.

(IANS): The recent assembly elections in the three northeastern states - Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland - has set the tone for next year’s parliamentary elections with as the BJP has consolidated its position and the Congress trying to revive.

Ahead of the assembly polls in three northeastern states, there was no Congress legislator in Meghalaya and Nagaland and was a lone MLA in Tripura.

In the assembly polls, Congress secured five seats in Meghalaya against 21 in 2018 and three in Tripura while the party, like in 2018 assembly polls, could not open its account in Nagaland. The three states have 60 seats each in the assemblies. The Congress drew blank in 2018 polls in Tripura.

Though BJP and its allies came to power in three states, their vote and seat share remained the same or less in the polls compared to the 2018 polls.

The saffron party in Nagaland and Meghalaya secured 12 and two seats both in 2018 and 2023 polls respectively. In Tripura, the

party this time bagged 32 seats, four seats less than the 2018 assembly polls. Of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the eight North Eastern states, the BJP has 14 seats and the Congress has four. While the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF in Assam), Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP in Nagaland), Mizo National Front (MNF in Mizoram), National People’s Party (NPP in Meghalaya), Naga People’s Front (NPF in Manipur), Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM in Sikkim) and Independent (in Assam) have one seat each.

The ruling BJP is the dominant party in the alliance government in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura while the saffron party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners -- Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Mizo

National Front (MNF) and National People’s Party (NPP) lead governments in Nagaland, Mizoram and Meghalaya respectively.

Since 1952, the northeastern states had been a stronghold of the Congress but over the years the party lost its organisational base leading to the emergence of the BJP and several regional parties.

Eying 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the Congress like previous efforts, has started to form a ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) with the likeminded parties.

The Congress on Thursday in Guwahati held a meeting of 10 opposition parties excluding Lok Sabha member and leading Muslim leader Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Aam Aadmi Party and Trinamool Congress.

“Violence is no solution to any problem. Peace, dialogue and commitment are the solution to every problem,” he said.

Welcoming the “misguided” militants, he said that with their joining the mainstream would inspire those still underground to shun the path of violence and terror.

Silsako Beel eviction: Assam govt to acquire land allotted to 17 institutions

GUWAHATI, MAR 12

(PTI): The Assam government will acquire 179 bighas (59 acres) of land allotted to 17 institutions that will be evicted from Silsako Beel (lake) in Guwahati, an official order stated.

The institutions to be evicted include Tata Group’s Ginger hotel, apex literary body Asam Sahitya Sabha and residential units of the state assembly and Doordarshan Kendra. The state government faced flak from the public and opposition during a recent eviction drive at the lake.

After the acquisition process is over, the buildings

will be demolished like many structures were brought down for several days since February 27 by the Kamrup Metropolitan District authorities.

Some other institutions whose legally allotted land will be acquired are Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development-- an autonomous research institute of ICSSR and Government of Assam, and the Chilarai Bhawan of All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Sanmilani.

Land parcels given to All Assam Tennis Association for a tennis complex, Asam Sahitya Sabha, National Institute of TV and Theatre, one vet-

erinary hospital, and Assam Assembly and Doordarshan Kendra for building residential quarters for their staffers will also be cleared. The list of 17 institutions also contains several schools, one college and land allotted to Asom Saah Shramik Kalyan Parishad.

During the recent eviction drive in the heart of the capital city, scores of houses, offices and shops were pulled down. Most of the people affected in this drive are from indigenous communities such as Bodo, Mising, Karbi, Ahom and Bishnupriya Manipuri among others.

Not happy as MLA, says Akhil Gogoi

GUWAHATI, MAR

12 (PTI): Assam MLA Akhil

Gogoi, who became a sensation in the state by winning Assembly polls from jail in 2021, on Sunday said he is not happy being a legislator and missed his activist days, when the former peasant leader could raise “people’s issues” more “directly and strongly”.

The first-time MLA from Sibsagar constituency also claimed that he is alone in criticising and protesting the “anti-people” decisions of the government as other opposition parties have become “silent”. “I am not happy with this post of MLA. I am an activist. I fight against all anti-people activities of the central as well as the state government,” Gogoi told PTI in an interview. Raijor Dal, Gogoi’s political party, has been fighting against various issues such as corporatisation of resources, what he claimed was a “fascist” atmosphere, and “communal

and undemocratic spirit” of governance. Asked specifically if there was more scope of fighting for people’s causes while he was an activist, Gogoi said: “I was more happy in the days of activism. Now, I am a legislator.

“In the Assam Assembly, I am the only (one in) opposition who fights against this government. We have 51 opposition MLAs. But many in the opposition voted in favour of BJP in the Rajya Sabha and Presidential elections.”

When pointed out that there were allegations that he had voted for BJP during the President’s election, the

Independent MLA denied the charge and claimed that he has been fighting against the “BJP’s communal and casteist politics all along”.

Gogoi had started his social life by starting the peasant organisation Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) and raised a series of issues relating to the farmers’ livelihood and settlement for almost two decades.

He had filed a number of RTI applications and court cases on a range of issues, including land rights, and exposed a number of scams in Assam.

The former KMSS leader and his group had also organised protests and agitations, including against NHPC’s 2,000 MW Subansiri hydro power project, Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and toll gates on National Highways, across the state.

“I fought against all the concepts of the central Government and BJP. I think

all the opposition MLAs are not fighting against this government strongly. I am alone fighting boldly,” Gogoi asserted.

“In all the sessions, I always fight against the communal spirit. In Assam, there are some anti-Constitutional, anti-democratic work … like the ‘fake encounters’ and eviction of minority people (from settlements which have been declared illegal by the state),” Gogoi alleged.

When asked if he will contest again in 2026, the Raijor Dal chief pointed out that election is a medium through which he can spread his ideology.

“It’s a question of democracy and I shall definitely fight the 2026 elections against this government,” he added. Gogoi expressed reluctance to give a direct reply to a query on his chances of winning in the 2026.

“See, I am not a professional politician … I am a simple man and I always

fight against communalism and fascism. We are trying to restore the values of the Indian Constitution and democracy.

“So, this question of winning or not winning is not a question for me,” he said. Gogoi was arrested by the NIA in December 2019 for his alleged role in violent anti-CAA protests across the state. The NIA was investigating two cases against Gogoi and three of his associates related to anti-CAA violence.

While in jail, he formed Raijor Dal, contested 2021 Assembly polls as an Independent candidate from Sibsagar seat and won, defeating BJP’s Surabhi Rajkonwari by a decisive 11,875 votes.

Gogoi became the first Assamese to win an election while behind bars without any physical campaigning. He also became the first in Assam Assembly to take oath as a MLA, while still a prisoner.

Many entrepreneurs in Arunachal showing interest in bamboo products

ITANAGAR, MAR 12

(PTI): For Nyapi Doni, selecting a new business after closing her poultry and piggery units, was a risky affair. But her grit and determination paved the way to overcome the risk factor and today she is an established bamboo entrepreneur in Arunachal Pradesh.

The bamboo industry in the northeastern state could be a money spinner, if its potential can be exploited, as the state boasts of having 74 species of the grass species, literally known as the ‘green gold’.

Doni, who started her ‘Arunachal Bamboo’ industry in 2019 after leaving aside her poultry and piggery units, now earns more than 50,000 per month by selling her wide range of bamboo products including, furniture, home utility items and jewellery items. With growing demands for bamboo in the country, many entrepreneurs

in Arunachal Pradesh are evincing keen interest to bamboo-based industries for its high-end value products with less investment.

“Bamboo industry is more comfortable and lucrative than other businesses as bamboo products with indigenous touch are a craze among the people,” Doni, who owns a large bamboo plantation, said.

She claimed that furniture and home utility items produced in her unit are in high demand. “Recently my unit has constructed all the furniture and utility items for a restaurant in the state capital. We have also designed the interiors of the restaurant with traditional designs made of treated bamboo which will last for over 20 years,” she added.

Another lady entrepreneur Techi Anna, who owns the Poma Cane and Bamboo Industry near here, revealed that her efforts were to popularize the unique bamboo

products of the state in other parts of the country.

“The unique products of my unit are bamboo plates and bowls which are being produced through bamboo coil technique. We are also producing furniture, home utility items besides jewellery which are available in our showroom at Itanagar,” Anna said.

Anna earns around Rs 80,000 on an average per month. However, the sale proceeds sometimes exceed two lakhs especially, during exhibitions where her unit put stalls. The North East Council had sanctioned an amount of Rs 50 lakh to Anna’s industry for construction of a work shed, where many artisans are being imparted training.

Anna said the artisans of the state, if provided quality training and the industrial units purchased the latest machinery, the state too could produce superior quality products.

Dismissing charges of dynasty politics in the SDF, which the former CM has been heading for nearly 30 years, he said Tamang has “no moral grounds” to make such allegations. In a Facebook post, Chamling

said, “Every family member of Mr Golay has become a power centre. If he has any ethical sense, he shouldn’t even take my name in relation to pariwarvaad in politics.” The SDF supremo said he has never made any member of his family MLA or MP for 30 years.

MADDUR (KTK), MAR 12 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused the Congress and other opposition parties of being busy digging his grave, while he was striving for the development of the country and the welfare of the poor, as he also declared that blessings of the people was his biggest protection shield. On his sixth visit this year to Karnataka, where Assembly elections are due by May, he also asserted that the “double engine” government is a necessity for the fast-paced development of the state.

“Amid the efforts of the double engine government for the development of the country and the progress of its people, what is Congress and its associates doing? ...Congress is dreaming about digging the kabr (grave) of Modi,” said the PM, who inaugurated the 118 Km long BengaluruMysuru Expressway project here in Mandya district, Addressing a public gathering here, he said, “Congress is busy digging the grave of Modi, while Modi is busy building Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. Congress is busy digging Modi’s grave, while Modi is busy in improving the lives of poor.”

“Congress people who are dreaming about digging the grave of Modi, don’t know that the blessings of crores of mothers, sisters, daughters, and people is the biggest protection shield for Modi,” he added.

The Rs 8,480 crore Expressway, which involved six laning of the BengaluruNidaghatta-Mysuru section of NH-275, will reduce the travel time between the two cities from around three hours to about 75 minutes, according to officials.

Prion to 2014, Modi said the Congress government at the Centre was “a coalition government running with the support of various types of people. It did not leave any stone unturned to destroy poor men and poor families.

The money that was there for the development of the poor, thousands of crores of rupees of it was looted by the Congress government.”

The Congress never bothered about the pain and sufferings of the poor, he alleged, adding that “In 2014 when you (people) gave me the opportunity to serve you, it paved the way for the formation of a government for the poor in the country, the government which understood the pain and suffering of the poor.”

The BJP government has made all efforts to serve the poor and to alleviate their sufferings.

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari, Pralhad Joshi,

actor-turned-politician and Mandya Lok Sabha MP Sumalatha Ambareesh, who recently announced support to BJP, were among those present at the event.

Earlier in the day, Modi threw flower petals back at the cheering crowd at several places as he was given a rousing welcome during a massive road show in the district headquarters city of Mandya.

He enthusiastically waved at the big crowd, who had lined up on both sides of the route, as the ruling BJP appeared focused on winning a good number of seats in the Old Mysuru region, the party’s key weak link. The Prime Minister picked up the shower petals which got piled up on the bonnet of his car and was seen hurling them back at the crowd. He also got down from his car and greeted folk artistes who staged a performance to welcome him.

Mandya in Old Mysuru region is a Vokkaliga community dominated district, largely seen as a bastion of JD(S), where the Congress too is strong, and the BJP is trying to make inroads.

According to senior party functionaries, BJP though has managed to emerge as the single largest

party in the last couple of Assembly polls, fell short of majority due to continued poor show in the Old Mysuru region. Sumalatha Ambareesh announcing her support to BJP is also likely to help the J P Nadda-led party in the upcoming polls.

The Old Mysuru region, where 89 seats (including 28 in Bengaluru) are up for grabs, is spread across 11 districts in south Karnataka including Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajnagar, Hassan and Kolar, and it is here that the BJP is now sharply focusing on. In the 2018 polls, the BJP managed to win one seat in Hassan; later in the high-voltage 2019 bypolls, it managed to win the K R Pet seat, its first victory in Mandya district and also won Chikkaballapur, another first. Creating a history of sorts, the party bagged the Sira Assembly segment in Tumakuru district for the first time in the 2020 bypolls.

Modi said the double engine government’s consistent effort is towards repaying people for their love with interest, through fast paced development, and added that the projects inaugurated or for which foundations were laid today is an effort in that direction.

KOLKATA, MAR 12

(IANS): West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose has agreed to mediate between the state government and agitating government employees to find out an amicable solution to the ongoing stir and fasting agitation over the demand of payment of dearness allowances.

A five-member delegation of the joint forum of state government employees, the umbrella organisation spearheading the movement in the matter, met the Bose at Governor House on Sunday morning.

Emerging out of the meeting, the delegation members claimed that the Governor has assured them that if the state government agrees, he is ready to play the role of a mediator on this count.

On late Saturday evening, Bose from his official Twitter handle sent an appeal to state government employees to withdraw at least their fasting agitation.

“Governor is deeply pained that the hunger strike of the aggrieved employees is entering its fourth week. The issues involved may be complex but there is always a simple way out. What is of paramount importance is the precious life of

our brothers who are on a continuous fast for a cause which is close to their heart. Governor entreats all those who are on the perilous fast to kindly end it and request all stakeholders to sit together and find an acceptable way out of the imbroglio,” his Twitter message read. After getting the message, the delegation of agitating employees met the Governor on Sunday.

“We had been demanding a tripartite meeting involving the state government and the Governor. The Governor has assured us that he will attempt to arrange that. He is himself a former government employee. So, he understands that our demand for pending DA arrears are justified. The Governor has assured us of initiating the needful from within his constitutional provision,” a member of the delegation told media persons after meeting the governor.

Cong Prez Kharge meets VP Dhankhar ahead of 2nd leg of Budget session

NEW DELHI, MAR 12

(IANS): A total of 3,038 labconfirmed cases of various subtypes of influenza including H3N2 have been reported till March 9 by the states, as per the latest data available on IDSP-IHIP (Integrated Health Information Platform). This includes 1,245 cases in January; 1,307 in February and 486 cases till March 9.

A real-time surveillance of cases of Influenza like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Infections (SARI) presenting in OPDs and IPDs of health facilities is undertaken by Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Apart from H3N2 influenza, two other important circulating influenza are Influenza A H1N1, Influenza B Victoria.

The ICMR data, however, reports a combination of respiratory viruses ranging from Covid-19 virus, swine flu (H1N1), H3N2, and the

seasonal Victoria and Yamagata lineages of influenza B viruses, as responsible. Meanwhile, the Covid infection has also reported a spike after four months as daily Covid cases were reported 524 on Sunday.

An integrated surveillance of Influenza like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) for the detection of human influenza virus and SARS-COV-2 virus is ongoing through structured ILI/SARI surveillance network of 28 sites, an official said.

The surveillance network is comprised of 27 DHR-ICMR’s Virus Research & Diagnostic Laboratories and country’s National Influenza Centre (WHO-NIC)

housed at ICMR-National Institute of Virology Pune, also a WHO Collaborating Centre for Global Influenza Surveillance & Response System (GISRS).

During the period of first nine weeks of this year, the surveillance network has monitored the human influenza virus and SARS-CoV-2 infection in SARI and ILI cases.

“The IDSP-IHIP data from health facilities indicate that during the month of January 2023, a total of 397,814 cases of Acute Respiratory Illness/Influenza Like Illness (ARI/ILI) were reported from the country that increased slightly to 436,523 during February, 2023. In the first 9 days of March 2023, this number stands at 133,412 cases,” the Health Ministry said in a statement.

The weekly data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) reveals that H3N2 has of late taken the lead pushing Covid-19 aside. Besides, of the samples

tested for the 9th week, 56 are of H3N2, 13 of Victoria, 5 of Influenza A H1N1.

“Seasonal H3N2 flu is a human flu from H3N2 that is slightly different from one of the previous year’s flu season H3N2 variants. Seasonal influenza viruses flow out of overlapping epidemics in East Asia and Southeast Asia, then trickle around the globe before dying off. Identifying the source of the viruses allows global health officials to better predict which viruses are most likely to cause the most disease over the next year,” said Shuchin Bajaj, a doctor and director at Ujala Cygnus Hospitals.

Meanwhile, the ministry has said: “Oseltamivir is the drug recommended by WHO. The drug is made available through the Public Health System free of cost. The government has allowed the sale of Oseltamivir under Schedule H1 of Drug and Cosmetic Act in February 2017 for wider accessibility and availability.”

Doctors in UP warn against self-medication in H3N2 flu

LUCKNOW, MARCH 12

(IANS): With influenza A subtype H3N2 virus claiming two lives in India, one each in Karnataka and Haryana, doctors in Lucknow have urged people to avoid self-medication.

Sheetal Verma, senior faculty department of microbiology at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) said, “The influenza A virus sub-type H3N2 is nothing new but

as people are experiencing longer spells of cough, self-medication should be strictly avoided. There is nothing to panic. This variant does not lead to a pandemic but taking precautions against it will certainly help.”

She said that it is better for people experiencing fever, cough or respiratory distress to consult a doctor instead of buying a drug over-the-counter because

According to doctors, the precautions people should take include -- keeping body immunity adequate and avoiding close contact with unknown people, particularly avoiding crowded places.

Abhishek Shukla, Secretary General of the Association of International Doctors, said, “A majority of those experiencing a longer spell of cough these

Re-kindling animosity

There have been several incidents particularly along the Assam-Nagaland border covering Sivasagar and Mokokchung districts during the past few years and the latest being two incidents when some forest and police personnel from Assam accompanied by Assam media personnel intruded inside Aosenden village on February 8 when the villagers were cultivating their land. According to Aosenden chairman and secretary, the armed party from Assam took away a car belonging to a member of the village. In order to restore normalcy, it was reported that officials of both Assam and Nagaland held a joint meeting at Chungtiayimsen on February 13 and agreed that the landowners can go ahead with cultivation works in their fields. On this basis, the villagers of Aosenden resumed their cultivation works on March 6. However, while they were busy, some miscreants from Assam side set fire to the jungle even before the clearing was completed for cultivation. Such incidents have become quite frequent and have raised suspicions that there is a conspiracy to create tension in the border between the two states. The reason is that Assam has failed to respect the legitimacy of the traditional boundary of the peoples of the states with which it has disputes.Assam bases its claim over the colonial boundary after independence and dismissing the legitimate claims of people (mostly tribals)whose ownership has been even acknowledged by the Ahom kings. The major cause for border disputes has been the arbitrary transfer of tribal lands and forest under districts within the provincial Assam which remained within the state and gradually became legitimate in reasserting the constitutional and political boundary of the states. The British took special interest in Assam mainly for growing tea gardens and extraction of natural resources. Quite obviously, the simple minded tribal folks were none too adept in the politics or modern methods in convincing the white colonial supremacists about their legitimate and traditional rights over the lands. All these lands were arbitrarily transferred to Assam purely for administrative convenience such as the 1925 notification issued by the then British colonial government of Assam. As many as 16 boundary line and 6 Inner Line Notifications were issued between 1866 -1923 by British India after the creation of Naga Hills district in 1866 in Samaguting (Chümoükidema) as the first HQ. The boundary lines overlapped each others in some areas creating problems in administration and revenue collections. The frequent shifting of the boundary and the inner lines were done unilaterally mainly to usurp the ancestral virgin forest of the Nagas, which were rich in untapped forest resources and mineral wealth. Knowing its commercial values, besides the fertility of the land for expansion of the tea plantation, the British India had arbitrarily declared Reserved in as many as 22 forest areas(reserve forest) and subsequently transferred to the neighbouring districts of Assam for free commercial exploitation. It is time that Kohima woke up to the alarm bell being rung from the other side of the border and ensure that respect for rule of law is maintained and also issue clear statements to expose any nefarious designs.

Total Surrender

Peter began to say to Him, “See, we have left all and followed You.” —Mark 10:28

Our Lord replies to this statement of Peter by saying that this surrender is “for My sake and the gospel’s” (Mark 10:29). It was not for the purpose of what the disciples themselves would get out of it. Beware of surrender that is motivated by personal benefits that may result. For example, “I’m going to give myself to God because I want to be delivered from sin, because I want to be made holy.” Being delivered from sin and being made holy are the result of being right with God, but surrender resulting from this kind of thinking is certainly not the true nature of Christianity. Our motive for surrender should not be for any personal gain at all. We have become so self-centered that we go to God only for something from Him, and not for God Himself. It is like saying, “No, Lord, I don’t want you; I want myself. But I do want You to clean me and fill me with Your Holy Spirit. I want to be on display in Your showcase so I can say, ‘This is what God has done for me.’ ” Gaining heaven, being delivered from sin, and being made useful to God are things that should never even be a consideration in real surrender. Genuine total surrender is a personal sovereign preference for Jesus Christ Himself.

Where does Jesus Christ figure in when we have a concern about our natural relationships? Most of us will desert Him with this excuse— “Yes, Lord, I heard you call me, but my family needs me and I have my own interests. I just can’t go any further” (see Luke 9:57-62). “Then,” Jesus says, “you ‘cannot be My disciple’ ” (see Luke 14:26-33).

True surrender will always go beyond natural devotion. If we will only give up, God will surrender Himself to embrace all those around us and will meet their needs, which were created by our surrender. Beware of stopping anywhere short of total surrender to God. Most of us have only a vision of what this really means, but have never truly experienced it.

SVB ruin may hit India, rising costs cut firm profits

Amid changing global scenario companies facing complex situation of weakness in people’s consumption and contraction in operating profit, the US Silicon Valley Bank collapse sparks a graver financial crisis.

The banks known for supporting start-ups hint at a new unseen future. Does it mean a serious churning for the start-ups. The SVB has given jitters to India as well. It has supported 20 Indian ventures since 2003. The stock market that was slowly recovering has got severe jitters with 900 point loss. The US banks see severe losses.

It has exposed the extreme fragility of the world financial sector led by the private companies and many previous instances, like the Lehman, or Satyam, manipulating balance sheets.

The SVB had been providing finances through SVB India company. It was providing debt capital to domestic high growth companies, which are now pulling out their money from SVB. The bank employs 800. Though Indian exposure to the SVB is low, as it is hitting the financial market, India may have

problems not so much for operational reasons but the overall impact on the international market.

The hit taken may accentuate the fund flow, which RBI has just started feeling comfortable. How it would hit the global situation already in a tizzy due to the Ukraine war remains to be seen.

The SVB has hit at a time when the country has been struggling to come out of lower growth at 4.4 percent in December quarter 2022. The RBI finds that sales of listed private companies record 22.6 percent growth in 2022-23 as compared to 41 percent in the previous quarter and 31.8 in the second quarter.

Operating profit of private manufacturing units contract though it expands for IT and services companies, says the RBI. The inflation adjusted sales are losing growth as per analysis of NSO data. The sales increased by 9 percent in December 2022 against higher volumes at 40.6 percent in June and 20.6 percent in September. Overall contraction was 1.9 percent in December and 2.4 percent in September.

The balance of risks, says RBI, is increasingly

tilted towards global outlook and emerging market economies (EMEs) appear to be more vulnerable, even though incoming data suggest that global inflation may have peaked. The nearterm growth outlook for the Indian economy is supported by domestic drivers as reflected in trends in high frequency indicators. Waning input cost pressures, still buoyant corporate sales and turn-up in investments in fixed assets are heralding the beginning of an upturn in the capex cycle in India which it expected to contribute to a speeding up of growth momentum in the Indian economy. A moderation in the wake of SVB may not be ruled out. Only the IT companies have shown better profits. Manufacturing companies’ expenditure on raw materials surged by 27.8 per cent on an annual basis has been experiencing moderation, as measured by the ratio of raw material expenditure to sales, are higher than a year ago. The SVB may hit fund flow and have impact on prices.

The companies with over Rs 500 crore turnover have shown annual growth

in sales. The most critical were the companies with sales of Rs 10 crore or less. These companies have suffered continuous sales drop for six consecutive quarters. The SVB scenario may add to the problem.

In the RBI’s views inflation remains a worry. Inflation may be slightly down, but it is certainly not out. If anything, it has broadened and become stubborn, especially at its core. An unease hangs over energy prices despite cheaper Russian crude.

Despite moderation in global commodity markets, climate change and the war in Ukraine are set to keep food prices at higher than pre-pandemic levels. Central banks may have moderated the pace of monetary policy tightening or hinted at it, but they are in no mood to ease off in their fight against inflation. Disinflation is about to become painful. Financial conditions, and especially borrowing costs, are biting into discretionary consumer spending and housing demand, and stalling investment in new capacity creation.

It is reflected in 22.9

percent shrinking of profits in the December quarter, for three quarters in a row. Costs grew faster than revenues earned from sales, which was 3.7 percent in September and 1.5 percent in December. This indicates that cost increases further accentuates sales performance. The CMIE figures show that raw material prices, which account for 62 percent of the total are not easing. Cost input increase came down to 10.9 percent from 32.7 percent in but still it is considered high. It has remained higher than the wage rises of 6.3 percent. Though that has another impact on the economy. As costs rise and wages stagnate, it reduces affordability leading to lower sales.

Wage growth has been low with almost all kinds of companies. As SVB may put many people out of job, it can impact all. Stagnation of wages and costs are inverse. If wages do not rise this can impact growth and new job prospects. This is not considered favourable for future growth amid demand slump.

The RBI is hopeful but has worries. Higher inflation in rural areas is muting spending activities.

Industry is having uneven recovery and exports are hit by global slowdown. Better capital flows give hopes for a better future if the SVB does not have larger footprint. Weaker global growth, fraught with SVB type risks, is probability. Inflation may come down in India but it would remain well above targets in most economies. The SVB crisis may increase inflation with rising finance costs along with geopolitical risks.

India, RBI says, has resilience. Overall domestic conditions are conducive for a turnaround in private investment, and if inflation ebbs, private consumption will firm up. There is a growing sense that the coming decade will mark India’s ascent on to the world stage. It is in this context that India’s priorities and deliverables under its G20 presidency assume relevance. Reinvigoration of global policy cooperation to meet emerging challenges, has to be priority in repairing the multiple fractures to put the global economy on a trajectory that fulfils the G20’s mandate of strong, sustainable, balanced and inclusive growth.

Exploiting technology to undermine democracy

Arecent disconcerting report based on an investigation carried by 30 global media outlets, including the Guardian and DeSpiegel, claims to have exposed a team of freelance units based in Israel, which disrupt elections and manipulate public opinion using disinformation campaigns.

Undercover reporters recorded a group of covert cyber influence specialists as they pitched their services for seeking fresh business, which involve using disinformation campaigns, false intelligence, hacks and blackmail to promote their clients’ interests. The group, which calls itself

‘Team Jorge’, claims to have worked on dozens of presidential elections around the world and charges multimillion-dollar fees.

Undercover journalists who carried out the investigation included Gur Meggido (The Marker), Frederic Metezeau (Radio France), and Omer Benjakob (Haaretz).

The journalists were part of a collaborative investigation called ‘Story Killers’, which was coordinated by ‘Forbidden Stories’ -- an international consortium of investigative journalists that pursue the work of journalists who have been killed or work under threat.

As reported, the covert units or contractors, used the pseudonym ‘Team Jorge’ headed by Tal Hanan, who previously worked as an Israeli special forces operative,

Notwithstanding the fact that the State of Nagaland inhabited by 80% Christians , literacy rate showing up-ward trend @ 80%, electioneering system in Nagaland is utterly bereft of rules/code of conduct guaranteed by the constitution.

Leaders from all walks of life consciously or unconsciously conformed to the system; philanthropies and many spiritual leaders too are no exception. Muscle and money power talk during elections whereas Truth, Justice, universal adult franchise and Godliness takes a back seat. The realities of election in Nagaland is all about money game, intense rivalry between the parties/village/zone, bloodshed, lost of lives and properties, excessive used vof alcohol and addictive substances, playing cards and carom, less family life and more social life. On the eve of every elections, NBCC, Association of Churches shelled out Time, energy & resources in launching clean election campaign through the length and breadth

and was apparently caught in an undercover sting operation by the journalists posing as potential clients.

However, Tal Hanan denies any wrongdoing. But he allegedly told the reporters that his unit’s services were available to intelligence agencies, political campaigns, and private companies, and that many European, African, Americans well as Central and South American clients had already used them around the globe.

Their modus operandi is said to involve creating thousands of fake social media profiles on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Telegram, Gmail, Instagram, and YouTube. These fake accounts, which allegedly used profile pictures from real social media accounts, were also linked to credit cards and could be used to create thousands of bots that sent mass messages.

In one secretly filmed meeting quoted by the Guardian, Hanan is seen boasting that at present his team is now involved in one election in Africa, besides two other teams in Greece and the UAE. Boasting further, he said that his team has so far delivered 33 presidential-level campaigns globally, 27 of which were successful.

Hanan also reportedly boasted to the undercover reporters that he could hack the email and messenger services of election campaigners, and send messages

to their contacts designed to damage their campaign.

The investigators found that Team Jorge’s tech toolbox included “a platform of influence” called Advanced Impact Media Solutions or AIMS, which Hanan claims to have sold to the intelligence services of more than 10 countries. The AIMS software is designed to create convincing avatars for social media campaigns. The avatars, or bots, use stolen photos of real people, operate on any social media platform, and can be connected to functioning Amazon and Bitcoin accounts. They also appear to have a longstanding presence online, including Gmail accounts and trite comments on celebrity YouTube videos, to give investigators the impression they are real people.

In this regard Hanan told reporters that they relied successfully on imitating human behaviour.

Though nowadays most online accounts require phone number and email address verification to keep out bots like those deployed by AIMS. But to overcome that there are websites available, which have been set up specifically to allow one-off SMS-verification services, for 50 cents or less. Many accounts such as Gmail and WhatsApp --- can be registered with “verified” phone numbers. Apparently Team Jorge used a service called SMSpva.com for phone number verifications.

Keeping abreast of social media platforms checks, AIMS relied on residential proxies to reroute internet traffic from bots through peoples’ homes so it appeared authentic, in order to avoid detection and shut-downs by social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook. This made it difficult for social media platforms to identify a coordinated disinformation campaign.

Verification and analysis of the recorded conversations by reporting partners Le Monde and the Guardian identified clusters of avatars, including those seen in Hanan’s pitch presentations, that appeared to have been used for coordinated Twitter campaigns.

Reporters found over 1,700 Twitter accounts connected to 21 AIMS-related campaigns, whose networks had produced tens of thousands of tweets.

In December last, during a in-person meeting with undercover reporters, Team Jorge showed off a new capability of AIMS: Artificial intelligence tools to generate fake news using specified key words, tone and topic.

The identities of Team Jorge members were shrouded in secrecy but reporters managed to piece together some background information on some members of the clandestine group. Some of it lines up with claims Team Jorge made about team members in calls with journalists.

One team member described his other colleagues as former se-

of the state, women and Prayerwarriors spent better part of their times praying and fasting for clean, fair and peaceful election but sadly till today nowhere the spirit is inculcated and in most case money continued to play a defining factor.

. Crushing defeats of 2023 anticorruption candidates GB.Kahuto Chishi Dimapur-III, Er.Mesenlo Kath Kohima Town, Akavi N Zhimomi 4 Ghaspani-1,Thomas Konyak Tizit are glaring proof that MONEY & INFLUENCE IN VARIOUS MANNER STILL REIGNS for winning election in Nagaland.

When naga society is hopelessly reeling beneath clouds of chaos and utter disorder , brave sumis have orchestrated a trend during 2023 election which can only carry us forward if pursue and emulates both in letter and spirit; a trend to ensure progress and prosperity:

(i) There was no report of election related bloodshed in sumi areas during 2023 NLA election inspite of being known as daring

and warrior tribe amongst the nagas.

(ii) Sumis have set up 2(two) young and vibrant anti-corruption candidates in the persons of GB Kahuto Chishi & Akavi N Zhimomi who have been voicing against all forms of corruption in the state for the past few years. Their Voices on corruption and clean election might not be pleasant for some ; their

(iii) preaching and teaching might have vanished in thin air for now but it is hope that awareness created by them today especially participation in the election without using money and influence will go a long way in bringing naga society in the right track.

(iv) Nagas, being a patriarchal society, there have been a gender regressive practices. Stiff opposition by all naga civil societies to hold ULB election in Nagaland which embodied 33% women reservation for almost 20 years is proof enough of gender disparity. However, challenging chau-

vinistic attitudes and to bring about an equitable society, Sumis have mandated Smti.Hekani Jakhalu Kense, to represent Dimapur-III, a promising and enterprising young Entrepreneur & Lawyer-turned politician and created history of electing the first woman to the 14th House of the NLA by universal adult franchise. Electing Hekani Jakhalu Kense and inducting as Advisor of Industries & Commerce Department is not only a major breakthrough for gender equality in the history of naga women but also a fulfilment of a long cherished dreams of the young naga entrepreneurs in general and Department of Industries & Commerce in particular. Right person for the right job.

(v) Electing Shri Kazheto Kinimi unopposed from Akuluto Constituency conveyed that electorates should not set up candidates for the sake of wining the election but with the purpose to lead the people towards progress and development. Barrack Obama once said ‘ It should be the power

nior information officers, former senior financial information and warfare experts, and psychological warfare specialists, all with intelligence services background.

Hanan indicated that he had orchestrated lobbying operations in the US despite not registering as a “foreign agent”, as required by law. He said he worked viaconsultants and companies that are already registered, and told reporters he had recently set up a public relations firm called Axiomatics to promote Team Jorge with “existing lobby groups”. During calls with undercover reporters, Team Jorge went into specifics about the technology they say the group uses to swing elections. They added that they have six offices and employ at least 100 people, emphasising that they draw on the backgrounds of colleagues with experience in the intelligence services. This pushes Team Jorge’s activities far beyond the realm of public relations strategies that are commonly deployed in elections.

As far as the financial pickings are concerned, Team Jorge told the reporters they would accept payments in a variety of currencies, including crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, or cash. He said he would charge between 6 million euros and 15 million euros for interference in elections.

(vi) Forbearance and accommodative spirit of the candidates: There have been lots of mud sling and accusations from the opponents and trolling on the candidates like Hekani Jakhalu Kense and GB Kahuto Chishi in social media but they took the criticism maturely and we didn’t see any negative reaction from them.

(vii) We have also seen a cousin brother of Jacob Zhimomi who shifted to another assembly constituency to pave a way for his cousin brother in a spirit of accommodation to avoid grudges within the family.

True to its stature as major and advance tribe in Nagaland,Sumis have successfully introduced a TREND naga society needed the most. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORKS......

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders set up a hoarding of ‘Washing Powder Nirma’ in a sarcastic welcome to Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Hyderabad on Sunday.

In continuation to various posters that surfaced on the walls of Hyderabad against BJP leaders and Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday, another hoarding giving Amit Shah a sarcastic welcome has come up at JBS junction in Hyderabad today, reports NDTV news.

Posters against BJP continue to surface in Hyderabad since Saturday when BRS MLC and Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s daughter K Kavitha appeared before the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. BRS leaders put up a hoarding that read ‘Welcome Amit Shah’. The hoarding featured morphed images of the

‘Nirma girl’ with faces of BJP leaders who joined the BJP party from other parties.

The hoarding showed the faces of Himanta Biswa Sharma, Narayan Rane, Suvendu Adhikari, Sujana Chowdhary, Arjun Khotkar, Jyotiraditya Scindia, Eshwarappa, and Virupakshappa.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had visited Hyderabad to attend the 54th CISF Raising Day parade.

Senior BJP leader and former MLC, N Ramchander Rao, speaking to ANI

and reacting to the hoarding set up by BRS leaders, condemned the incidents. “BRS leaders have developed a habit of displaying hoardings without naming themselves because they are afraid of action by law enforcement agencies. It has become a habit to display such hoardings, showing the BJP government and BJP party leaders in a bad light,” he said. The BJP leader said that they did the same thing earlier when PM Modi visited Hyderabad during national executive meetings.

(IANS): Trinamool Congress leader Santanu Bandopadhyay, who is currently in Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody in connection with the multi-crore teachers’ recruitment scam in West Bengal, was also involved in ‘money for transfer’ racket.

The revelation has been made by the investigating ED officials who have secured copies of recommendation letters for transfer of state government employees while conducting raid and search operations at Bandopadhyay’s residence, sources said.

According to them, from examination of related documents it is also clear that there were fixed rates

of payments for transfer depending on the proposed place of transfer, where transfers to Kolkata or its adjacent districts attracted highest payments.

Bandopadhyay, who is also principal nodal officer of Hooghly district Zilla Parishad, will be presented on Monday at a special court of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata where the ED counsel might make an appeal for extension of his central agency custody. Meanwhile, it learnt that in the remand letter of Bandopadhyay, ED has mentioned about property worth Rs 20 crore held by the accused ruling party leader as well as his wife Priyanka Bandopadhyay.

‘Rs 600 cr detected during raids is rumour’

PATNA, MAR 12 (PTI):

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has dubbed as “rumours” the claim of the Enforcement Directorate that proceeds of crime amounting to Rs 600 crore were detected during searches on premises owned by him and close family members.

The RJD leader, who is currently away in Delhi, also said the BJP will be left embarrassed if he made public the “panchnama” (seizure list) signed after

the raids.

“Just recall, in 2007, transactions worth Rs 8,000 crore, including a mall and hundreds of land plots, were alleged,” tweeted Yadav, in an obvious reference to the land-for-hotels ‘scam’ pertaining to his father Lalu Prasad’s tenure as the railway minister.

India-Aus agree to further enhance trade relations

NEW DELHI, MAR 12

(IANS): India and Australia

on Sunday acknowledged the significance of their trading relations, as bilateral trade exceeded $31 billion during the last financial year.

Commerce Minister

Piyush Goyal and Australia’s trade minister Don Farrell met to discuss next steps for further enhancing the bilateral economic relationship. They discussed implementation of the economic cooperation and trade agreement (ECTA), negotiations for the India-Australia Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) and further developing twoway investment.

Both the ministers agreed that given the trade complementarities between the two countries, there is considerable potential for significantly enhancing bilateral trade within the next five years. The ministers also discussed engagement in the G20, the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) and the World Trade Organisation (WTO).

They agreed that Australia and India share high ambition for the IPEF, as

evidenced at the special round of IPEF negotiations in New Delhi, and would continue to work together though IPEF on areas of mutual interest, including the clean economy and resilient supply chains.

Both Goyal and Farrell noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese look forward to swift progress in negotiations and for an early conclusion of an ambitious Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA), which will build on the foundation laid by the ECTA, including new areas of trade, investment and cooperation. CECA will create new employment opportunities, raise living standards and improve the general welfare in both countries.

The ministers look forward to concluding CECA

NEW DELHI, MAR 12 (PTI): Eight of the top 10 valued firms faced a combined erosion of Rs 1,03,732.39 crore in market valuation last week, with Reliance Industries and ICICI Bank taking the biggest hit amid an overall weak trend in equities.

During the holiday-shortened week, the 30-share BSE Sensex declined 673.84 points or 1.12 per cent amid concerns over the quantum of the next interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve.

Barring Bharti Airtel and ITC, eight firms suffered erosion from their market capitalisation (mcap). The market valuation of Reliance Industries plummeted by Rs 41,878.37 crore to Rs 15,71,724.26 crore, the most among the top 10 firms. The mcap of ICICI Bank tumbled Rs 18,134.73 to Rs 5,88,379.98 crore. The valuation of HDFC Bank tanked by Rs 15,007.38 to Rs 8,86,300.20 crore, and that of State Bank of India eroded by Rs 12,360.59 to Rs 4,88,399.39 crore. HDFC’s market valuation diminished by Rs 6,893.18 crore to Rs 4,77,524.24 crore. Tata Consultancy Services’ (TCS) valuation slumped by Rs 4,281.09 to Rs 12,18,848.31 crore.

as soon as possible, are pleased with the progress resolving various bilateral technical market access issues and look forward to continuing engagement.

They highlighted the importance of a smooth and timely clean energy transition as both countries work towards achieving their respective net zero goals.

The ministers noted the complementary nature of Australia and India’s economies and committed to further enhancing economic, technology, and trade and investment cooperation to get to net zero emissions.

Goyal and Farrell reaffirmed the importance of the multilateral trading system, with the WTO at its core. They agreed to build on the success of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference in Geneva and reaffirmed their commitment towards improving WTO functions and having a fully functioning dispute settlement system by 2024.

They also agreed to work towards a productive engagement in the run-up to the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference to be held in Abu Dhabi in 2024.

All non-NDPP and non-BJP political parties which won seats in the recently held assembly election, have announced support to the Rio-led coalition government. Whether the ‘support’ will be with or without pre-condition is not clear. A pre-condition means given some position as part of the government. However, in the UDA the four NPF legislators in the previous house were not given any official position. It may be recalled that the opposition-less government phenomenon first started in Nagaland in 2015 (under NPF-led DAN III which included BJP and Congress).

The second was in 2021 under PDA after 25 opposition NPF legislators joined the government to form the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Govt to infuse more capital in public sector general insurers

NEW DELHI, MAR 12

(PTI): The government may have to infuse more capital in the three public sector general insurance companies to improve their financial health, a senior government official said.

The government last year provided Rs 5,000 crore capital to three insurers --National Insurance Company Limited, Oriental Insurance Company Limited and United India Insurance Company. Based on the performance in the FY23, the finance ministry would take a call as to how much capital they would require to meet regulatory requirement, the

official said. They are not in good financial health and fund would be infused in these entities to augment their solvency margin, the official added. The solvency margin is the extra capital the companies must hold over and above the claim amounts they are likely to incur. It acts as a financial backup in extreme situations, enabling the company to settle all claims. As per the regulator IRDAI’s mandate, the minimum solvency ratio insurance companies must maintain is 1.5 to lower risks. In terms of solvency margin, the required value is 150 per cent.

Assembly poll results in 3 NE states set the tone...

Assam Congress President Bhupen Bora, who called the meeting, said that they would check the division of votes in the next year’s Lok Sabha polls in Assam as the BJP always gets electoral mileage due to the division of votes.

Since 2014, the Congress leaders of the northeastern region who left the party include Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sushmita Dev and Ripun Bora (Assam), Manik Saha, Ratan Lal Nath (Tripura), N. Biren Singh (Manipur), Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland), Mukul Sangma and Ampareen Lyngdoh (Meghalaya) causing a serious setback for the party.

The chief ministers of five of the North Eastern states -- Himanta Biswa Sarma (Assam), Manik Saha (Tripura), N. Biren Singh (Manipur), Pema Khandu (Arunachal Pradesh), Neiphiu Rio (Nagaland) -- are former Congress leaders and now in the BJP, running the saffron party-led governments.

The Congress’ downfall in the politically important northeast region began after the BJP’s emergence as Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) came to power at the Centre in 2014 after defeating the United Progressive Alliance headed by the Congress.

With Nagaland moving towards opposition-less gov-

ernment following all MLAs of most of the parties extending support to Neiphiu Rio-led NDPP-BJP alliance government, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said all parties contesting polls in the North East must understand that they would have to eventually support the BJP.

The Janata Dal (United) has dissolved the Nagaland unit after its lone MLA has supported the NDPP-BJP government without the knowledge of party leadership. Sarma, also the convener of the BJP-led North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is the ‘tallest leader’ of the country, and everyone favours him in the region.

The government in 2008 had declared Silsako Beel, surrounded by Chachal, Hengerabari, Pathar Quarry and Satgaon areas, a protected water body in Guwahati through an Act and prohibited any construction or settlement in around 1,800 bighas (over 595 acres) of the lake area.

As per Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) chairman Narayan Deka, less than 300 bighas of the lake remained free from encroachment and the waterbody was reduced to a “small pit”.

“This is one of the main reasons for water logging in the eastern part of Guwahati city during the monsoon season,” he had claimed.

On March 2, the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration issued an order to demolish as many as 89 bridges over Bahini

river along an approximately 8 km stretch in Guwahati to ease water logging problems in a part of the city.

However, the order was modified on March 6 and said 26 bridges will be demolished instead of 89 after the district authority and the state government were slammed by the opposition and social media users.

The Himanta Biswa Sarma-led dispensation has been carrying out eviction drives in different parts of the state since it assumed power in May 2021. In the last three months, several major eviction exercises have taken place.

In one of the largest eviction drives in Assam, the administration, in a three-day exercise from February 14, cleared 2,099 hectares in Burachapori Wildlife Sanctuary and nearby revenue villages in Sonitpur district, affecting almost 12,800 people.

ENNG chief along with 14 others surrender

(From p-1)

“With you (ENNG cadres) returning home to normal life, Arunachal Pradesh has made a giant leap towards peace. I hope this step of yours will set the doors open for others to come back home,” he said.

Khandu pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh has always been a peaceful state and that his government is committed to ensure that it remains so.

Khandu informed that the state government has the “Underground Surrender

Policy” in place to rehabilitate them as well as facilitate their livelihood.

“This financial year (2023-24), we have allocated Rs 5 crore to encourage misguided youths to shun violence and become partners of growth. We assure the surrendered cadres all help to join the mainstream for their meaningful contribution to the State and the country,” he said.

He lauded the role of Assam Rifles and the state police in pursuing the rebels, encouraging them to

s urrender, and resuming normal life. He expressed optimism that the forces would continue with their effort to curb insurgency in the region but with a humane touch.

Deputy chief minister Chowna Mein, Home Minister Bamang Felix, chief secretary Dharmendra, DGP Satish Golchha, IGAR (North) Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera and other officials were present in the function.

19 people killed in attack in DR Congo

KINSHASA, MAR 12

(IANS): At least 19 people were killed in an overnight attack in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), local sources said on Sunday.

The attack, which took place in the village of Kirindera in the territory of Beni of the eastern province of North Kivu, killed at least 19 civilians, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita, former governor of North Kivu, told journalists on Sunday morning, attributing the attack to the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Several buildings in the village, including a health center, were set on fire by the rebels, he said.

The attack came two days after another attack blamed on the ADF rebels on Thursday in two villages of the Beni territory, where at least 44 people were killed.

8 dead, 7 missing after boat capsizes off San Diego coast

SAN DIEGO (US), MAR 12 (AP): At least eight people were killed when two suspected smuggling boats approached a San Diego beach and one capsized, and crews are searching Sunday for an estimated seven additional victims, authorities said.

A woman on one of the panga-style boats called 911 late Saturday to report that the other vessel had overturned in waves off Blacks Beach, according to US Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm.

“The woman who called stated that the boat that overturned had 15 people on it, but that was just an estimate,” Brahm said.

Coast Guard and San Diego Fire-Rescue crews pulled eight bodies from the water, but thick fog hampered the search for additional victims. A Coast Guard cutter combed the area early Sunday, and officials hoped to get helicopters in the air when weather improves, Brahm said.

7 killed as explosion levels 3 buildings in Iran

TEHRAN, MAR 12 (IANS): At least seven persons were killed and five others injured after three residential buildings collapsed on Sunday following an explosion in Iran’s Tabriz city, the media reported.

The explosion took place at around 3 a.m. (local time) in a two-story building, Xinhua news agency reported.

“The impact of the blast completely levelled the building and two nearby ones,” Mohammad-Baqer Honarbar, director general of East Azarbaijan province’s Crisis Management Organisation was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

‘More than 200 Russians’ killed in Bakhmut as battle rages on

KYIV, MAR 12 (AGENCIES): Ukrainian military spokesperson, Serhiy Cherevatyi, on Sunday said that 221 pro-Moscow troops were killed and more than 300 wounded in the frontline city of Bakhmut.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry announced that up to 210 Ukrainian soldiers were killed in the broader Donetsk part of the front line, without specifying Bakhmut casualties, reports Press TV.

“In the city center, the Bakhmutka River now marks the front line,” the British Defense Ministry said in its daily intelligence bulletin on Saturday adding that Bakhmut has become a “killing zone.”

It said Russia’s Wagner military group has taken control of most of the eastern part of Bakhmut in recent days, while Ukrainian forces held its western parts.

Ukraine insisted that it was holding on in Bakhmut and was giving a “decent rebuff” to Russian forces,

Janet Yellen says no federal bailout for Silicon Valley Bank

WILMINGTON (US),

MAR 12 (AP): Treasury

Bakhmut could lead to further Russian advances in the east. One of the Ukrainian presidential aids has said that the military would continue its efforts in Bakhmut because the battle there is pinning down Russia’s best units and degrading them ahead of a planned Ukrainian spring counter-offensive.

Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday that the federal government would not bail out Silicon Valley Bank, but is working to help depositors who are concerned about their money.

“But we are concerned about depositors, and we’re focused on trying to meet their needs.”

Silicon Valley Bank began its slid into insolvency when its customers, largely technology companies that needed cash as they struggled to get financing, began withdrawing their deposits. The bank had to sell bonds at a loss to cover the withdrawals, leading to the largest failure of a U.S. financial institution since the height of the financial crisis.

6 killed, 28 injured in bus accident

in Nepal

KATHMANDU, MAR 12 (IANS): At least six people died and 28 others were injured when a bus they were travelling in rammed into hillside in Nepal’s Sindhuli district on Sunday.

The bus carrying 34 passengers was proceeding towards Kathmandu from Okhaldhunga.

The incident occurred after the bus driver lost control over the vehicle and crashed into hillside, Deputy Superintendent of Police Chiranjeevi Dahal, was quoted as saying by The Kathmandu Post.

The bus driver fled the scene after the accident.

A Ukrainian serviceman carries a shell for a howitzer before firing towards Russian troops outside Bakhmut. (Reuters) with the commander in charge of defending Bakhmut, Colonel general Oleksandr Syrskyi, saying on Saturday its protection was key for a Ukrainian counter-strike.

For the Kremlin, capturing Bakhmut is essential for achieving its stated goal of taking control of the whole of Donetsk, one of the four Ukrainian regions that joined the Russian Federation following the referendum in September last year.

Moscow says that

Bakhmut would be a stepping stone and a rare battlefield gain in completing the capture of the Donbas industrial region, one of Moscow’s most important objectives.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday that the seizure of Bakhmut would allow Russia to press its offensive deeper into the region. Some military experts have questioned the sense of the continued fight for the ravaged town, but Ukrainian officials say that the fall of

China appoints US-sanctioned Gen. Li Shangfu as Defence Minister

BEIJING, MAR 12 (PTI):

China on Sunday appointed a US-sanctioned army general as its new Defence Minister, displaying scant regard for Washington’s ban on its military personnel.

Gen. Li Shangfu, a Chinese aerospace engineer and General of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), was sanctioned by the US in 2018 for the purchase of Russian Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets and S-400 surface-toair missiles by China’s Equipment Development Department (EDD) in viola-

tion of the US sanctions on Russia. The US sanctioned both the EDD and its then director Gen Li.

On Sunday, Gen Li was confirmed as the new

Defence Minister by China’s rubber-stamp parliament, the National People’s Congress (CPC). He will succeed Gen Wei Fenghe.

Gen Li was appointed along with a new set of cabinet ministers for various ministries as part of change of the Chinese government officials every 10 years.

On Saturday, Gen Li was appointed as a member of the Central Military Commission (CMC) - the high command of the Chinese military headed by President Xi Jinping.

Chinese FM Qin Gang elevated to State Councillor rank

Qin, 56, was appointed as the Foreign Minister in December succeeding Wang Yi who was elected to the Political Bureau of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), a key policy body of the party in the once-in-a-five-year congress of the party in October last year.

Qin’s elevation to the rank of State Councillor will put him in line for his appointment as the Special Representative (SR) of the India-China boundary mechanism formed in 2003.nk of State Councillor, which will put him in line for his likely appointment for the post of

China’s Special Representative for India-China boundary talks, a high-level mechanism to discuss the boundary issue and improvement of ties between the two countries.

The National People’s Congress (NPC), the Chinese Parliament, which is holding its annual session on Sunday endorsed Qin’s appointment as Foreign Minister and elevated him to the status of State Councillor, a high-ranking position within the State Council or the central cabinet, the executive organ of the Chinese government.

Ukrainian officials on Sunday ordered a historically Russian-aligned wing of the Orthodox Church to leave a monastery complex in Kiev. It is the latest move against a denomination regarded with deep suspicion by the government.

Patriarch Kirill, head of the Russian Orthodox Church, on Saturday asked Pope Francis and other religious leaders to persuade Ukraine to stop the crackdown against the church. Kiev is cracking down on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) since Kirill has strongly backed Moscow.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to USD 250,000, but many of the companies and wealthy people who used the bank — known for its relationships with technology startups and venture capital — had more than that amount in their account. There are fears that some workers across the country won’t receive their paychecks.

Yellen, in an interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation,” provided few details on the government’s next steps. But she emphasised that the situation was much different from the financial crisis almost 15 years ago, which led to bank bailouts to protect the industry.

“We’re not going to do that again,” she said.

Yellen tried to reassure Americans that there will be no domino effect after the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank.

“The American banking system is really safe and well capitalized,” she said.

“It’s resilient.”

Silicon Valley Bank is the nation’s 16th-largest bank. It was the second biggest bank failure in U.S. history after the collapse of Washington Mutual in 2008. The bank served mostly technology workers and venture capital-backed companies, including some of the industry’s bestknown brands.

Yellen seemed to blame high interest rates more than trouble in the technology industry for the bank’s failure. “The problems with the tech sector aren’t at the heart of the problems at this bank,” she said. Regulators seized the bank’s assets on Friday. Deposits that are insured by the federal government are supposed to be available by Monday morning. “I’ve been working all weekend with our banking regulators to design appropriate policies to address this situation,” Yellen said. “I can’t really provide further details at this time.”

US congressman concerned over HR violations in Pak

ISLAMABAD, MAR 12

(PTI): An influential US Congressman has raised concerns over the continuous violation of human rights and democracy in Pakistan and asked the government to ensure freedom of speech and the application of rule of law in the country.

“There is concern over the increasing incidents of violence in Pakistan,” tweeted Congressman Brad Sherman, who is also a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In a video statement, shared by a leader of ousted prime minister Imran Khan’s party, Sherman reminded Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif-led government about its obligation to take action against those who violate human rights.

“We will not hesitate from raising our voice against human rights violations,” said Sherman, a Democrat representing California’s 32nd congressional district.

Earlier, he tweeted that he spoke over the

French Senate adopts pension bill despite street protests

PARIS, MAR 12 (AP): A contentious bill that would raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64 got a push forward with the Senate’s adoption of the measure amid strikes, protests and uncollected garbage piling higher by the day.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne tweeted late Saturday after the 195-112 vote that she looks forward to the bill’s definitive passage, hailing a “decisive step toward a reform that will assure the future of our retirement” system.

But the legislation must now move through tricky political territory with multiple potential outcomes.

President Emmanuel Macron is undaunted by the uncollected trash piling up in Paris and other cities from a strike by garbage workers opposed to the bill and re-

duced services and supplies in other sectors like transport and energy.

Macron has refused a request by unions to meet with him, which leftist CGT union leader Philippe Martinez said amounted to “giving the finger.”

There has been no government response to a union

request for a “citizens’ consultation” on the legislation, made Saturday after a new day of marches which drew a far smaller number of people into the streets than protest marches four days earlier.

Senate President Gerard Larcher voiced pride in the job of his colleagues after their vote — a day before the deadline — saying the body controlled by the conservative right played its role “with only one objective whatever our feelings are, the interest of the country and the interest of the French people.” Unions maintain that French people are voting their opposition to the reform in the streets and through strikes, continuing though reduced in some sectors.

The first season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” ends on Sunday, but there’s still much to learn from the science that inspired it.

In most ways, the show depicts a classic zombie apocalypse.

One morning, everybody is going about their normal life. There’s a mention on the radio of chaos in Jakarta. And by nightfall, twitchy, possessed oncehumans are sprinting after the main character.

This time, though, it’s a fungus turning people into zombies.

The new scenario, first realized in the video game that the show is based on, is making viewers wonder whether a fungus pandemic can happen in real life.

“A fungal pandemic is definitely possible,” Norman Van Rhijn, a mycologist researching fungal infections at the University of Manchester, told Insider in an email.

“The potential is huge for what can emerge and become a pathogen,” Tom Chiller, chief of the fungal disease branch of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told Insider. “I am not going to be surprised that more fungi emerge as human

pathogens, that become more challenging to treat and more infectious.”

Here’s the science fact and science fiction behind “The Last of Us,” and the threats that fungi pose.

Cordyceps is real, but it only overtakes the brains and bodies of insects — most famously, ants.

The fungus grows inside an ant’s body, causes the ant to climb upwards, and then sprouts from its head and releases spores, attempting to spread itself far and wide.

Cordyceps can’t survive at human body temperature, so it can’t infect us. But other species of fungus produce substances with mind-altering qualities that can affect human behavior.

Some historians attribute the Salem Witch Trials

to ergot poisoning, saying that women began behaving strangely and accusing each other of witchcraft after eating infected rye. The psychoactive substance LSD is derived from ergot.

“Every time you have a beer, your behavior is affected by the byproduct of a fungus, which is ethanol,” David Hughes, who has studied Cordyceps and consulted on the video game “The Last of Us,” told Insider.

The fungus Cryptococcus can also spread from the lungs to the brain and cause meningitis — inflammation — that can alter behavior.

Unlike on TV, though, mind-altering fungus “doesn’t jump into our body and affect a behavior that enables future transmission,” Hughes said.

Fungal diseases can jump from animals to humans. But the idea that a fungus like Cordyceps could mutate enough to make the giant leap from insects to humans, and still keep its

ability to effectively manipulate behavior, is far-fetched.

In the infectiousdisease world, “never say never,” Chiller said.

“But I will say that there’s a lot, a lot of hurdles that need to be overcome,” he continued. “An ant and a human are dramatically different. We have immune systems, we live at different temperatures, you know, our body temperature is much higher. So there are just some fundamental things that are going to be exceedingly hard for that particular fungus to overcome.”

In “The Last of Us,” the first cases of fictional human Cordyceps appear in Jakarta, Indonesia, where the government asks a leading mycologist to identify the fungus under a microscope and wriggling in the mouth of a dead civilian. Horrified, she learns that 14 people who worked with the victim have disappeared.

“There is no medicine. There is no vaccine,” she grimly informs a government official. She recommends that the government bomb the entire city to contain the fungus.

In real life, it’s true that there is no vaccine for deadly fungal infections (though experts don’t recommend bombing as a

The finding, published in the journal Nature, shows that this enzyme uses the low amounts of the hydrogen in the atmosphere to create an electrical current.

The research team produced and analysed a hydrogen-consuming enzyme from a common soil bacterium.

Recent work by the team has shown that many bacteria use hydrogen from the atmosphere as an energy source in nutrient-poor environments.

“We’ve known for some time that bacteria can use the trace hydrogen in the air as a source of energy to help them grow and survive, including in Antarctic soils, volcanic craters, and the deep ocean,” said Professor Chris Greening from Monash University in Australia.

“But we didn’t know

substitute). There are only a few classes of drugs to treat them, and they aren’t always reliable cures.

In fact, because fungi are so similar to humans at the cellular level, many of the drugs that fight them are also toxic to human bodies.

According to Global Action for Fungal Infections, fungi kill more people than malaria.

“The problem with fungi is we don’t have a lot of things in our toolkit to control them,” Hughes said.

Some deadly fungi, like Candida auris, which emerged in 2009, have even developed a powerful resistance to the anti-fungal drugs we do have. In hospital outbreaks, Candida auris has killed anywhere from 29% to 53% of its victims, according to the World Health Organization.

how they did this, until now,” Greening said.

The researchers extracted the enzyme responsible for using atmospheric hydrogen from a bacterium called Mycobacterium smegmatis. They showed that this enzyme, called Huc, turns hydrogen gas into an electrical current.

“Huc is extraordinarily efficient. Unlike all other known enzymes and chemical catalysts, it even consumes hydrogen below atmospheric levels -- as

little as 0.00005 per cent of the air we breathe,” said Rhys Grinter from Monash University.

The researchers used several cutting-edge methods to reveal the molecular blueprint of atmospheric hydrogen oxidation.

They used advanced microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine its atomic structure and electrical pathways, pushing boundaries to produce the most resolved enzyme structure reported by this method

Laboratory work performed by Ashleigh Kropp, a PHD student at Monash University, shows that it is possible to store purified Huc for long periods.

“It is astonishingly stable. It is possible to freeze the enzyme or heat it to 80 degrees celsius, and it retains its power to generate energy,” Kropp said.

“This reflects that this enzyme helps bacteria to survive in the most extreme environments,” he said.

Huc is a “natural battery” that produces a sustained electrical current from air or added hydrogen, the researchers said.

While this research is at an early stage, the discovery of Huc has considerable potential to develop small air-powered devices, for example as an alternative to solar-powered devices, they added. (PTI)

Oscar weekend belonged to “Scream VI” in theaters, as the horror sequel notched a franchise-best $44.5 million in domestic ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Media Group co-production sailed past expectations, easily surpassing the previous series high of $32 million that “Scream 2” opened with in 1997. The film’s robust debut, coming as Hollywood prepared to gather for the 95th Academy Awards, was yet another reminder of how horror has come to be one of the industry’s few sure things at the box office.

After lying dormant for more than a decade, the “Scream” franchise, previously directed by Wes Craven and released by Dimension Films, has found a ripe revival with a young cast led by “Wednesday” star Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera.

Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have brought back the 27-year-old series’ meta slasher storylines and serial killer Ghostface, and it’s paying off. Last year’s “Scream V” grossed $137 million worldwide on a production budget of $24 million. In the latest chapter, Courtney Cox returns as reporter Gale Weathers, as does Hayden Panettiere, a veteran of “Scream IV.” But it’s the first “Scream” movie without Neve Campbell. (AP)

ITF Women’s Open: Top seed Brenda Fruhvirtova lifts title

BENGALURU, MARCH

12 (IANS): Top-seed Brenda Fruhvirtova gave an impressive demonstration of her fighting skills while beating India’s Ankita Raina 0-6, 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the ITF Women’s Open singles title at the KSLTA Stadium on Sunday.

KP Balaraj, the founder of KPB Family Trust, Sunil Yajaman, Joint Secretary of KSLTA, and Shruthi Iyer, Mrs India Universe 2021, attended the prize distribution function.

Cutting back to the match, the proceedings had a different beginning to it as Fruhvirtova, a World No. 163 from Czech Republic, did not look sharp in the first set against Raina, the fourth seed.

Fruhvirtova served 4 double faults and committed several unforced errors as Raina never gave her any footing. The Indian grabbed the first set 6-0, converting all the 3 breakpoints. The second set began in the same manner with Raina building a 3-0 lead and a quick end to the

match loomed. But a break in the fifth game proved to be the turning point in the match as Fruhvirtova soon levelled the scores at 3-3 and then she converted a break point in the 9th game to take a 5-4 lead.

The Czech girl served out the game and took the match into the deciding third set. Raina looked shaken after the loss of the second set and was hardly in the picture in the third set. There was a chance for Raina to effect a break in the fourth game but Fruhvirtova raised her game just in time to hold the serve. Fruhvirtova ended the match with a crushing forehand after two hours and 19 minutes of intense battle.

created by Leandro Trossard, with Gabriel Magalhaes (21), Gabriel Martinelli (26) and Martin Odegaard (45+2) the beneficiaries, and there was a further boost as Gabriel Jesus made his return from injury as a late substitute.

Fulham improved in the second half, forcing Aaron Ramsdale into action on a couple of occasions and rattling the bar through Aleksandar Mitrovic, but Arsenal remained a threat at the other end, with Jesus nearly marking his comeback with a goal when he was denied by Bernd Leno.

The victory ensures Arsenal maintain a healthy lead over City at the top of the Premier League, their title chase gathering momentum with a fifth consecutive win which never really looked in doubt.

INDIAN WELLS (USA), MARCH 12 (IANS): Defending champion Iga Swiatek eased into the round of the Indian Wells Masters with a comfortable 6-0, 6-1 victory over American Claire Liu.

The world No. 1 won the first 11 games of the match before easing to victory in just over an hour, the fifth time this season she’s dropped just one game in winning a match. With Saturday’s victory, Swiatek improved to 13-3 in the 2023 season. Interestingly, all 13 of those wins have come in straight sets.

The top seed will next face 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in a battle of former Indian Wells champions. Swiatek won the only previous meeting with Andreescu, a 7-6(2), 6-0 win over the Ca-

nadian en route to the Rome title last year.

In other actions, Australian Open finalist Elena Rybakina won the battle of major champions, edging Sofia Kenin in two tiebreaks to advance to the third round of the tournament. The No.10-seeded Rybakina handed Kenin a 7-6(6), 7-6(5) loss to advance

to Monday’s third round. There she’ll meet the winner of the match between No.21 Paula Badosa and Nuria Parrizas Diaz. On the other hand, Ons Jabeur of Tunisia pulled off a come-from-behind victory in the second round, defeating Polish lucky loser Magdalena Frech 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 on Saturday night.

1st Test: Mathews slams 115; New Zealand set 285-run target

CHRISTCHURCH, MARCH 12 (IANS): Veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews’ 14th Test century has opened the door for Sri Lanka to claim a spot in the World Test Championship final, helping the visitors set a target of 285 for New Zealand at the end of day fours play at Hagley Oval.

Matthews slammed 115 and was involved in stands of 105 and 60 with Dinesh Chandimal (42) and Dhananjaya de Silva (47 not out) respectively to carry Sri Lanka to a second-innings total of 302.

At stumps, New Zealand reached 28/1 and need 257 runs more on an interesting Day 5 to complete the highest successful chase in Test cricket at Hagley Oval, beating Australia’s 201/3 in February 2016.

Despite a nervous half-hour in the early nineties, Mathews moved to his century with boundaries off back-to-back deliveries, swatting Blair Tickner

through mid-wicket before booming a shot through covers off the back foot in a gritty knock which lasted 235 balls.

Sri Lanka began Day 4

by building a target-setting platform, adding 67 runs and only losing night-watchman

Prabath Jayasuriya (6) in the morning session. Matthews and Chandimal worked into their partnership, facing 218 balls between them before the latter was bowled by a Tim Southee beauty after taking the new ball.

It brought de Silva to the crease, whose smart acceleration moved Sri Lanka’s lead past 250 in the evening session. His 47 not out included vital runs with the tail to move the team past 300, before Kasun Rajitha’s wicket of Devon Conway in the fifth over of New Zealand’s reply meant the tourists made evening inroads with the ball.

Fast bowler Blair Tick-

ner picked 4-100 and had the best figures of a bowling attack missing Neil Wagner, who has been sidelined for at least six weeks due to torn right hamstring and bulging disc in his back.

Tom Latham (11 not out) and Kane Williamson (7 not out) will resume New Zealand’s chase on day five with the hosts needing a further 257 to win.

A win would keep Sri Lanka’s hopes of a first World Test Championship final berth alive. But they would also need a victory in the second Test of the series, to be held at Basin Reserve from Friday, and for Australia to prevent an India win in the ongoing final Test of their Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Ahmedabad.

GRATITUDE

First of all, I thank our Almighty God for His constant love and grace. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all the people of 30 Alongtaki Assembly Constituency for giving me the opportunity to be elected for the second consecutive term to represent your mandate. 4th Test: Kohli gets much awaited ton

AUSTRALIA: 480 & 3/0; INDIA: 571

AHMEDABAD, MAR 12 (PTI): India’s batting mainstay Virat Kohli finally ended a near 40-month wait for his 28th Test hundred as his scrappy but brilliantly effective 186 set up a gripping final day of the fourth Test against Australia here on Sunday.

Kohli’s epic knock helped India amass 571 in response to Australia’s first innings score of 480. With a lead of 91 runs, India had a go at Australia in the six overs before stumps but visitors managed to keep all wickets intact. With a lead of 88 at close, India will have to go for the jugular on day five on a track where there is finally some turn and bounce on offer but not something that batters can’t tackle.

A draw still looks the most likely result but if any team wins the Test from here, it will be India, who would then go on to win the series 3-1 and directly qualify for the World Test Championship final, with-

out having to wait on the fate of Sri Lanka’s Test series versus New Zealand. For the 15,000 odd

people present at Motera, it was a Sunday to remember as Kohli guided Nathan Lyon towards mid-wicket to

complete his first Test hundred since November 2019. The hundred, his 75th in international cricket, came off 241 balls. The celebrations were muted as there was still some way to go before India would be in driver’s seat and hence he didn’t want to lose focus by getting elated. There was a smile of satisfaction and a now familiar kiss on his engagement ring.

It was an innings of different character from Kohli. Having had his troubles dealing with deliveries outside the off-stump, he traded caution in exchange of flair and hardly played those beastly cover drives till he reached his hundred.

There were shades of Sachin Tendulkar’s 241 at Sydney in 2004 in this innings of Kohli’s, when one compares the sheer discipline of the two knocks.

Kohli showed copious amount of patience on way to a gritty hundred before changing gears.

Shreyas suffers back pain again

A supremely fit athlete, Kohli ran 84 singles, 18 doubles and twice he took three runs, including once when he was batting in his 160s. By sheer volume of running between the wickets, he collected 126 of his 186 runs with 15 hits to the fence.

Wife Anushka Sharma put up an Instagram post which informed that Kohli showed this enormous composure despite being “sick”.

It was pity that Shreyas Iyer couldn’t turn up for batting due to recurring back pain and Kohli was the ninth and last Indian man to be dismissed after his 364 ball knock that spanned over 8 hours and 36 minutes. No one deserved those 14 runs more than him.

Brief Scores: Australia 480 in 167.2 overs and 3/0 in six overs trail India 571 in 178.5 overs (Virat Kohli 186, Shubman Gill 128; Todd Murphy 3/113, Nathan Lyon 3/151) by 88 runs

Indian Wells: Alcaraz beats Thanasi Kokkinakis

DHAKA, MAR 12 (AP): Bangladesh wrapped up the three-match T20 series against England with a game to spare as Mehidy Hasan claimed a careerbest 4-12 and added a crucial 20-run knock to secure a four-wicket victory over the tourists on Sunday.

Bangladesh held England to a lowly 117 in 20 overs, before knocking off the target with seven balls to spare, reaching 120-6.

Najmul Hossain, who was instrumental in the six-

wicket victory in the first match with a 30-ball 51, was not out on 46, helping the home side stay in the contest despite England bowlers making inroads at regular intervals. Fast bowler Jofra Archer gave England a flicker of hope, claiming 3-13 but Najmul held his nerve. Bangladesh lost both openers — Liton Das and Rony Talukdar — while chasing the moderate target for just 27 runs.

Later, Najmul held one end with confidence

England appeared to be on course to save the game, sensing an unlikely victory, but Najmul and Taskin Ahmed hit three boundaries off Chris Jordan’s first over of the day to close out the contest. Taskin who hit the winning boundary was not out on 8.

Earlier, he got the Bangladesh attack off the mark, removing Dawid Malan after England was put into bat first.

Shakib got the better of Phil Salt who started well before his progress was halted, having reached a 19-ball 25.

INDIAN WELLS (USA), MARCH 12 (IANS): After missing nearly two weeks of action as he recovered from a right hamstring injury, World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz made a winning return to the court, beating Thanasi Kokkinakis 6-3, 6-3 in the Indian Wells Masters to enter the third round. Red hot from the start, Alcaraz dropped just one point on serve in the opening set and broke in his first return game as he raced to a 3-0 lead. Set two was tighter, with Kokkinakis

effective in fighting power with power for stretches, but Alcaraz’s speed, defence and consistency were too much to overcome after another early break. “I would say I played my best, apart from everything: the points that I have to defend, the semifinals that I have to defend,” the 19-year-old said.

“I tried not to think about that, just to play my game, to enjoy playing here. Of course, I tried to make people enjoy watching tennis here...That’s what I liked from tonight.”

AHMEDABAD,

12 (PTI): Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer was taken for scans after complaining of back pain on the penultimate day of the fourth and final Test against Australia here on Sunday.

Iyer’s injury came to light after wicketkeeperbatter Srikar Bharat came out to bat ahead of him following the dismissal of Ravindra Jadeja (28) in the morning session.

Iyer had also missed the first Test in Nagpur due to a back issue before returning for the second game in Delhi. “Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play?. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him,” BCCI said in a medical update.
