Exit polls predict win for RJD-led alliance in Bihar

had fought the election in alliance with RJD and Congress among other parties, while LJP was in the NDA alliance. LJP had got two seats with 5% vote share.

This time, JD(U) is back in the NDA, while LJP fought the election alone.

During the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when both JD(U) and LJP were in the NDA, the alliance had won 39 out of 40 seats in the state.

Exit polls also predicted results for by-polls held in several states. According to India Today-Axis My India exit poll, the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh will survive as it projected the party to win 16-18 seats, and Congress is estimated to bag 10-12 of the total 28 seats that went to polls.

Similarly, for bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, the exit poll predicted BJP to win 5-6 seats, SP 1-2 seats and BSP 0-1 seat, out of the eight seats for which polling was held on November 3.

In Gujarat where voting happened for eight seats on November 3, the same exit poll projected BJP to win 6-7 assembly seats and Congress a single seat. BJP is in power in Gujarat as well as in Uttar Pradesh.

NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): Several exit polls on Saturday gave the RJD-led opposition alliance in Bihar an edge over the ruling NDA while at least three of them predicted a clear majority for the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ which has projected Tejashwi Yadav as its chief ministerial face. Most of the exit polls also predicted RJD to again emerge as the single largest party in the 243-member assembly along with a clear dip in the seat tally of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U).

Counting of votes for the three-phase Bihar assembly polls, which ended on Saturday, will be held on November 10. Exit polls are typically based on feedback from a limited number of voters in select areas and none of them have a 100% accuracy record.

COPENHAGEN, NOV 7 (AGENCIES): As many as 214 people have been infected with a mutated COVID strain that has been linked to minks in Denmark from June to mid-October, the country’s Ekstra Bladet newspaper reported on Friday, citing a research institute.

More than a quarter million Danes went into lockdown in the northern region of the country where the mutated variation of the coronavirus has infected minks being farmed for their fur, leading to an order to kill millions of the animals.

The newspaper cited the Statens Serum Institute, based in Copenhagen, which said that the mutated form of the virus had been found in 214 people, with 200 of these individuals

based in the North Jutland region.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters on Wednesday that a mutated strain of coronavirus, which was identified on mink farms in the north of the country, had subsequently spread to humans.

Denmark is the world’s largest producer of mink fur. Cases of the coronavirus disease have also been identified at mink farms in other countries, including the Netherlands and Spain, since the start of the pandemic. Last month, Denmark started culling millions of minks in the north of the country after Covid-19 infections were reported among the stock there. Nationwide, at least 216 out of the 1,139 fur farms in Denmark have now been infected.

KSC towards creating a more walkable Kohima city to convey the message that streets were meant not only for vehicles and for parking, but to make space for everyone and also for trees, plants and nature.

On November 7, the Old NST parking spot was transformed into a pop up open street space for pedestrians, food vendors, street vendors selling organic vegetables and fruits, flowers and sitting space

for shoppers. This was an open space initiative to envision and test how streets can be transformed into happy, safe and inclusive spaces for everyone.

KSC would work towards identifying more locations around town where open street spaces can be carved out permanently for all citizens.

KSC in collaboration with the Kohima Traffic

Police (KTP) and in consultation with the Nagaland State Disability Forum also earmarked a parking space reserved exclusively for people with disabilities just outside Rutsa Bakery. KTP also said that they would to identifying parking spaces for PwDs in strategic locations around the town.

KSC also sought support from citizens towards making Kohima a people

friendly and more walkable city. One young boy said that it was exciting to see a parking slot transformed into such a nice open space.

Another citizen stated that more such spaces should come up around different parts of the city, while another appreciated the platform given to the street vendors.

It must be noted that the Ministry of Housing

and Urban Affairs to ensure a green recovery from COVID-19 had launched the “streets for people challenge” to inspire cities to create walking friendly streets through quick measures and to re-imagine their streets as public spaces through the lens of economic regeneration, safety and child friendly interventions with inclusive designing.

DIMAPUR: Tokhü Emong, the premier festival of Lotha Nagas was celebrated in a subdued manner during this pandemic on November 7.

It was celebrated more as a family get together in small groups in various localities across the state. The festival was observed solemnly with more focus on imparting to younger generation the values of family bonding, forgiveness, love, honesty, integrity, respect for elders and community service.

Moilan Khel Wophang Taro Bosti: Moilan Khel Wophang Taro Bosti (MKWTB), Karbianglong Assam observed the celebration by maintaining Standard Operational Procedures (SOPs).

The programme was attended by the family members of the Lotha community residing at MKWTB in their colourful traditional attire.

During the celebration, welcome note was given by Yansathung Ovung, invocation prayer offered by Rhanlamo and Tokhü greetings delivered by Nchenthung Humtsoe.

Significance of the festival was shared by Nlumsao, where he called upon the community to come in unity, to celebrate the festival in a true way of forgiveness and with positive approach. He also impressed upon the community to strive for cooperation and coexist in

DIMAPUR: ARK Foundation conducted a sensitisation workshop on “substance use and prevention” with department of Sociology (PG), St. Joseph’s College (Autonomous), Jakhama on November 6 and with the high school students of River Belt School, Dimapur on “Substance use and its prevention” on November 7 respectively.

He said that there were multiple reasons such as curiosity, peer pressure, frustration,

experimental, recreational purpose etc while other factors like poor upbringing, inferior complexity, and easy availability. He also shared the harmful effects of substance use such as tension, arguments, lack of trust, avoidance and incidence of violence in the family. On the management and prevention perspective, he mentioned that primary prevention was the “key”.

In his motivational speech to the students, he shared that student life was the time when the core responsibility was to study and achieve education. He shared a major concern where youngsters were initiating some substances termed as “gateway drugs” such as sniffing of dendrites, use of Tobacco and nicotine products, and other inhalant substance.

Correspondent KOHIMA, NOV 7 (NPN): The third oldest high school in the state, John Government Higher Secondary School (JGHSS), Viswema on Saturday celebrated the 75th anniversary, with advisor of Youth Resources and Sports, Er. Zale Neikha as guest of honour. The celebration was initiated by school managing board and alumni of JGHSS. In his speech, the advisor paid tribute to all the visionary pioneers of the school for their sacrifices and “all those people who have given their heads, their hearts and their wealth 75 years ago”. He also said “5th March 1945 is a red letter day for all of us then, known as John Institute to now John Government Higher Secondary School.”

Observing that the school has produced many scholars, officers and prominent personalities over the years, he added that it was not only a blessing for the village, but all the Southern Angami villages and also to some extent the neighbouring villages. He said the visionary and enlightened leaders of Japfuphimia and the generosity of John of Viswema village made it possible for the school to be standing proudly here today.

While acknowledging the teachers who have served the school from 1945 till date, he further

impressed upon the present teachers to give their utmost best for the growth and welfare of the school.

As an alumni himself, the advisor said the school was for students to learn and grow. He reminded the students that the parents and teachers were sacrificing everything, so they could become someone tomorrow.

He encouraged the officers and village leaders of Southern Angami to continue to give constructive support towards the school.

Principal of the school Dr. Chumbeni Kikon in her address said the school was the third oldest high school in Nagaland after Mayangnokcha Government Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung and Ruzhukhrie Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima. She narrated that after Second World War, the southern Angamis known as the Japfuphimia felt the need of education for their children. Few educated people from neighboring villages at the foot of Japfu hill set up a private school on March 5, 1945. The institute was named after the main donor John Angami who is remembered as the founding member of modern education in the southern Angami area. T. Sakhrie served as the first headmaster of the school.

On August 27 1946, the school was taken over by Assam gover nment as

souvenir was released by former teacher, Kekutsol Sophie.

Blast near Assam-Mizoram border

Around 1. 30 am the incident occurred at the Upper Painom Lower Primary School causing extensive damage to the school property. Courtesy- Newslive SILCHAR (ASSAM), NOV 7 (PTI): Amid tension on the Assam-Mizoram border, a primary school building near the inter-state boundary in Cachar district was destroyed in an explosion carried out by unknown miscreants early on Saturday, police said.

A 12-hour bandh called by a students’ organisation in protest against the abduction and killing of an Assam resident allegedly by attackers of Mizoram also affected normal life in Cachar district.

was heard from far away, police said.

No casualty was reported in the explosion.

Investigations into the incident are on, police said.

This is the second explosion in a school building in Cachar district within a fortnight. On October 22, a bomb blast had taken place in a Bengali medium school at Khulicherra area of the district close to the inter-state boundary.

Assam’s Additional Director General of Police (law and order), G P Singh, had on October 29 visited the border area in the district to review the law and order situation and

said that the explosion in the school was possibly the handiwork of miscreants out to terrorise the local people.

Tension has been prevailing along the AssamMizoram border since October 17 after miscreants damaged 18 temporary huts and three dwelling units, following which several rounds of talks were held among top officials of Assam, Mizoram and the Central government.

Dedicating a water supply project at Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh, the Jal Shakti minister said that potable drinking water to every household in the country through Jal Jeevan Mission would be made available by 2024 and in Arunachal Pradesh by 2023.

The water supply project implemented under Jal Jeevan Mission, will benefit more than 1,500 population living in Pathergaon, Kaisu, Enten and Enthem villages of Namsai district by providing them with regular supply of potable drinking water.

Mizoram was previously a part of Assam until 1972, when it was carved out as a Union Territory.

Congress leaders arrested for rally against farm laws MANGALDOI (ASSAM), NOV 7 (PTI): Around 100 Congress leaders, including party general secretary Jitendra Singh and MPs and MLAs, were arrested from Darrang district on Saturday while protesting the Centre’s farm laws, police said.

Dar rang Superintendent of Police Amrit Bhuyan told PTI that around 100 leaders were arrested for violating Section 144 of CrPC, which was in place in the district headquarters.

Arunachal’s COVID tally rises to 15,325 Itanag ar , N ov 7 (PTI): At least 81 more people, including five security personnel and six health workers, tested positive for COVID-19 in Arunachal Pradesh on Saturday, pushing the tally in the state to 15,325, an official said.

Of the fresh cases, 15 were reported from the Capital Complex region, 16 from Shi-Yomi, nine from Lepa Rada, seven from Changlang and six from West Kameng district, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.

Five new cases each were also registered in East Siang and West Siang, four each in Namsai and Tirap, three in Anjaw, two in Pakke Kessang and one each in Upper Subansiri, Lower Dibang Valley, Lower Siang, Lohit and Longding.

“Two Indian Army personnel, an employee of Indo Tibetan Border Police, an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRBn) staffer and a CRPF jawan are among the fresh patients,” the official said.

Six health workers -- three from Lepa Rada, two from Anjaw and one from Changlang -- have also contracted the disease, Jampa said.

IMPHAL, NOV 7: By-polls in four Assembly constituencies spread over three districts of Manipur passed off peacefully with high voter turnout on Saturday.

While there were no violence incident that would disturb the voting process reported from any of the 203 polling stations spread over the four Assembly segments, there were reports of voters being threatened ahead of the by-polls. Assault and threatening of voters, arrest of polling agents ahead of the polling hour and bulk casting votes allegedly took place during the voting hours in some places.

Four Assembly constituencies; Wangoi in Imphal West, Lilong and WangjingTentha in Thoubal district and Saitu (ST) in Kangpokpi district voted today to decide the fates of 11 candidates in the fray.

The voting that commenced at 7 am on Saturday went on till late evening even after past the past the polling deadline of at 7 pm by the ECI. Except delay in commencement of voting and suspension of voting for some hours due to technical

errors in voting machines (EVMs), no untoward incidents were reported from any of the polling stations.

Despite various measures to strictly implement the COVID-19 SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) taken up by the by-poll conducting authorities, there were reports of social distancing SOP not followed from most of the polling stations.

High voter turnout of above 80% was expected in all the four constituencies.

The state chief electoral officer (CEO) however did not release the official final voter turnout till the time of filing this report.

An incident of intimidating voters was reported in a village within WangjingTentha in Thoubal district where three candidates –BJP, Congress and an independent candidate were in the fray.

A group of around 50 people armed with deadly weapons allegedly threatened voters of Tekcham village of the constituency not to come out to cast votes and even assaulted some of them last night.

Meanwhile, voting was in progress till late this evening even as the voting hour ended at 7 pm as election conducting authority allowed those voters who were already inside the polling station to cast votes.

All voters who turn-up to cast their votes were provided COVID-19 protective gears like face masks, hand sanitizers and hand gloves in every polling booth by the ASHA and Anganwadi workers as a part of ECI guideline and precautionary measure to prevent spread of COVID-19 during elections.

There were altogether 1,35,212 electors in the four ACs where polling was conducted on Saturday to decide the fates of 11 candidates in the fray.

Of the 11 candidates, four were Congress nominees, three BJP, three independents and one NPP. For the first time in the state, ‘mark-III’ electronic voting machine (EVM) and voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) were introduced.

Around 2,294 polling personnel, including security, were stationed in the 203 polling stations spread across the four constituencies to conduct the voting in a smooth manner.

The counting of votes will be conducted on November 10.

2 NSUI activists arrested for ‘assaulting’ police in Assam Nagaon (Assam), Nov 7 (PTI): Two activists of the NSUI, the students’ wing of the Congress, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly assaulting policemen in Assam’s Nagaon district, police said. The incident took place in Morikalong outpost on Friday evening when police personnel seized a scooter from one of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) members for riding it without requisite documents, a senior officer said.

Two persons involved in the incident were arrested in the morning and a manhunt has been launched to nab the others, the officer added.

India launches earth observation satellite S R I H A R I KOTA (Andhra Pradesh), NOV 7 (PTI): India successfully launched its latest earth observation satellite EOS-01 and nine international customer spacecraft on board a Polar rocket from the spaceport here on Saturday, in its first mission this year amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Indian Space Research Organisations workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C49) injected EOS-01, intended for applications in agriculture, forestry and disaster management support and other satellites one by one in orbit around 20 minutes after liftoff from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC), about 110 km from Chennai, at 3.12 pm.

This is ISROs first mission this year after the COVID-19 pandemic induced lockdown ‘disturbed 10 missions being planned by the agency and the nine customer satellites are from the USA, Lithuania and Luxembourg.

ISRO Chairman K Sivan described the mission as a “success” and termed it as “unusual” for ISRO as a rocket launch cannot happen like ‘work from home’ and all engineers and technicians had to travel from different centres and work together at Sriharikota for

Subsequent to the successful launch, the primary satellite commenced operating its own functions including deployment of solar panels, Sivan said.

In view of the pandemic, ISRO implemented precautions for COVID-19 and scientists, mission directors, project directors, were seen with face masks and maintaining social distancing at the mission control centre.

There was no gathering of media persons and the public viewing gallery too was closed.

ISRO made arrangements for live telecast of the launch through various platforms, including its website and social media sites.

In a text book sequence, the four stage 44.5-metre tall PSLV-C49, in its 51st flight, blasted off from the first launch pad of SDSC at 3.12 pm at the end of the 26-hour countdown and soared into the sky.

The launch, originally scheduled for 3.02 PM, was delayed as the scientists around 15 minutes before lift-off “decided to put on hold following debris on the path of the rocket and inclement weather conditions.” After the 10 minute delay, the rocket blasted off amid heavy rain leaving a trail of orange fumes before vanishing into thick clouds over the spaceport.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday alleged that MLAs of the BJP were receiving calls from state Congers chief Kamal Nath who is trying to lure them. “The Congress and Kamal Nath are attempting unsuccessfully to contact and lure BJP MLAs. Nath is making calls to them. It was Nath who played the politics of horse trading and effected manipulations.

Nath has muddied politics of Madhya Pradesh,” Chouhan told reporters.

He was responding to a query on allegations raised by Nath on Friday that the BJP was again trying to lure away some leg-

islators of the Congress.

By-elections were held on November 3 for the 28 constituencies, 25 of which fell vacant due to resignations by Congress MLAs who joined the BJP earlier this year while the rest three seats have been unrepresented due to demise of the sitting legislators. “...Whenever Congress resorts to this (horsetrading), it’s termed as management but when someone comes to us (join the BJP) on his own, then it is called a horse-trading,” Chouhan said.

On Friday, Nath issued a statement accusing the BJP of luring its MLAs with “offers”.

“The BJP is sensing a crushing defeat in the byelections. They are now resorting to horse trading (of MLAs). I have spoken with several MLAs of the Congress who informed me about the offers and allurements they were receiving from the BJP,” stated the former chief minister, who lost power in March this year after 22 MLAs of the Congress joined the BJP under former MP Jyotiraditya Scindia.

In the 230-member Madhya Pradesh Assembly, the BJP currently has 107 members and required nine more MLAs to attain a simple majority, while the Congress’ tally stands at 87.

Among other members, the BSP has two legislators, while the SP has one member besides four Independents.

without compromising on quality”,t he chairman, wearing a n-95 mask said.

The Chairman also complemented the directors of ISRO’s various centres for taking care of the employees, their health and for defining real Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure work progressed.

With just one week to go for Deepavali festival, the chairman in a lighter vein said that before the festival itself, ISRO has made a successful rocket launch.

“Definitely, you can enjoy more on this one. Let me wish all the best for all the employees, as well as their families. Jai Hind”, he said as he signed off.

ISRO said it used the PSLV-DL variant, equipped with two strap-on motors, for the launch.

This is the second time it was deployed after the PSLV-C44 mission which had successfully launched imaging satellite Microsat R on January 24, 2019.

The customer satellites were launched under an arrangement with ISROs commercial arm NewSpace India Ltd. The R2 satellite from Lithuania is for ‘technology demonstration’ while four from Luxembourg Kleos (KSM-1A/1B/1C/1D) would be used for maritime applications.

Mild quake hits south Gujarat; no casualty

Gupkar alliance holds first meeting in Jammu

AHMEDABAD, NOV 7 (PTI): An earthquake of 4.3 magnitude rocked south Gujarat on Saturday afternoon, affecting Bharuch and Surat districts, an official from the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR) said.

According to Gandhinagar-based ISR, the medium-intensity earthquake hit south Gujarat at 3.39 pm, with its epicentre 36 km east south-east from Bharuch.

Gujarat government in a statement said Sardar Sarovar Dam, ranked the country’s third highest concrete dam, and the 182-metre statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in its vicinity, have not experienced “adverse impact of this earthquake”.

The epicentre of the quake was around 50 km from the Dam and Statue of Unity, which are designed to withstand 6.5 magnitude quake with epicentre distance of 12 km from the reservoir, it was stated.

JAMMU, NOV 7 (PTI): National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah’s residence here saw a flurry of political activities on Saturday, as members of the Gupkar alliance met in Jammu for the first time since its formation last month.

Several delegations met leaders of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), which was formed by seven mainstream political parties of the Union Territory for the restoration of special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Today, we met for the first time in Jammu and a number of people from the civil society and political parties met us, and we are happy that the sentiment which we saw in Kashmir is also found here,” Sajad Ghani Lone, who is the spokesperson for the alliance, told reporters.

Members of the alliance had earlier held meetings in the Kashmir division of the Union Territory.

New Delhi, Nov 7 (PTI): Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha was appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) on Saturday, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement.

President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office to Sinha as the Chief Information Commissioner in the Central Information Commission at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, it said.

The post of the chief of transparency watchdog was lying vacant for over two months after Bimal Julka completed his term on August 26. Sinha, a former diplomat, joined as the Information Commissioner on January 1, 2019. He has served as India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka.

Sinha, aged 62, will have a tenure of about three years as the CIC. A CIC and Information Commissioner are appointed for a tenure of five years or till they attain the age of 65 years.

Later, Sinha administered the oath of office to journalist Uday Mahurkar, former Labour Secretary Heera Lal Samariya and

Vanaja N Sarna, Neeraj Kumar Gupta, Suresh Chandra and Amita Pandove are the other Information Commissioners in the Central Information Commission. Transparency watchdog Central Information Commission, mandated to decide complaints and appeals filed under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, can have a Chief Information Commissioner and ten Information Commissioners.

There is still a vacancy of three Information Commissioners in the Commission.

The Centre on August 5 last year had abrogated the special status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated it into union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

HC reserves order on Arnab’s bail plea, no immediate relief ‘Baba ka dhaba’ owner files MUMBAI, NOV 7 (PTI): Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami, arrested in an abetment of suicide case on November 4, failed to get any immediate relief on Saturday as the Bombay High Court reserved its order on his interim bail plea.

But the court said he can move the sessions court for regular bail in the meantime.

Elsewhere, the Raigad sessions court said it will hear police’s appeal against magistrate’s order denying them the custody of Goswami and two other accused on November 9.

After hearing marathon arguments, a division bench of Justices S S Shinde and M S Karnik said it would not be possible to pass the order on Saturday itself.

Goswami’s lawyer Harish Salve sought his release as “ad-interim relief ” but the HC expressed inability to do so.

“We will pass the order at the earliest. The pendency of this matter does not preclude you (Goswami) or the other accused from approaching the concerned lower court seeking regular bail,” the court said.

If a bail plea is filed, then the sessions court shall decide it within four days, it said.

The high court was hearing petitions filed by Goswami, a high-profile TV journalist, and two other accused – Feroze Shaikh and Nitish Sarda -- seeking interim bail and challenging their “illegal arrest”.

The trio were arrested

by Alibaug police in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on November 4 in connection with the suicide of architect-interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother in 2018 over alleged non-payment of dues by their respective firms.

The petitions also sought a stay to the investigation and quashing of the FIR. The court, which on Saturday only heard arguments on interim bail, said it would hear the petitioners on quashing of the FIR on December 10, after Diwali vacation.

After his arrest from his Lower Parel residence here amid high drama on Wednesday, Goswami was taken to Alibaug, where the Chief Judicial Magistrate remanded him and two others in judicial custody till November 18.

As the magistrate refused to remand them in police custody, the Alibaug police filed revision plea in the Raigad district court, which said earlier on Saturday that it will hear it on November 9.

Goswami is presently lodged at a local school which has been designated as a COVID-19 centre for the Alibaug prison.

The high court, hearing the arguments on Saturday, sought to know why the petitioners did not move the lower court first for bail.

“The high court is already overburdened with

regular bail appeals. We do not want to undermine the authority of the sessions court which is empowered to hear regular bail plea,” Justice Shinde said.

In his bail plea, Goswami alleged that he and his family were assaulted by the police during the arrest, and he suffered a “six-inch deep gash on his left hand, a serious injury to his spinal cord”.

But his lawyers did not raise these allegations during the arguments.

Senior counsel Amit Desai, appearing for Maharashtra government, opposed bail, saying there was fresh material to reopen the case which had been closed earlier. The accused should have approached the sessions court first, and if they do so, the “police will not seek adjournments or prolong the hearing,” Desai said. Desai also argued that just because Alibaug police had filed an `A’ Summary report closing the case, it does not mean there can be no fresh probe. “`A’ summary does not mean the offence did not occur or that the case is false. It only means that the investigation could not be completed. This is a matter that is now again under investigation,” he said.

He also contended that

no permission was not required to be taken from the magistrate to carry out further probe.

“The state government ordered the (fresh) probe pursuant to which the police intimated the magistrate on October 15, 2020. The magistrate noted `Seen’ and kept the file on record.

“After this, the statements of several witnesses including the victim’s family were recorded before the magistrate under section 164 of CrPC,” he said.

Senior counsel Shirish Gupte, appearing for victim Anvay Naik’s wife Akshata Naik, also opposed the pleas, and said the magistrate had accepted the closure report in 2019 without giving the victim’s family an opportunity to object.

Advocate Devadatt Kamat, appearing for Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh, sought deletion of Singh’s name as respondent in Goswami’s plea, saying the case was filed by Alibaug police and he had nothing do with it.

The HC, meanwhile, also sought response from the state government on a petition filed by Anvay Naik’s daughter Adnya Naik seeking a fresh probe by an independent agency. It will be heard on December 8.

NE W DE L H I , N OV 7(AGENCIES): Acting on a complaint by ‘Baba ka Dhaba’ owner Kanta Prasad, the Delhi police have booked Youtuber Gaurav Wasan for cheating and have launched a probe into the allegation of misappropriation of funds.

Wa s a n h a s b e e n booked under IPC section 420, reported IANS. “After receiving the complaint, preliminary inquiry was done after which a cognisable offence FIR U/S 420 IPC has been registered at PS Malviya Nagar and investigation

has been initiated,” said DCP South Atul Thakur.

Kanta Prasad, who is a resident of Malviya Nagar, filed a complaint against Wasan on October 31 for cheating and fraud.

In his complaint, Prasad, who runs the ‘Baba ka Dhaba’ stall, alleged that the Youtuber approached him in October and shot a video with him to help and promote his business.

Gaurav Wasan posted the video on social media through his account- ‘Swad Official’ and requested the public to donate money to

financially help the dhaba owner. The video which featured Prasad recounting the financial difficulties he was facing in his business due to the lockdown, was shared extensively on social media.

“The said video went viral and as per the complainant, the accused Gaurav deliberately shared only his and his family members’ bank details and mobile number for donation and collected huge amounts of donation and later cheated the complainant,” said DCP South.

Trump’s four years

W

ith number of votes going in favour of Democratic candidate Joe Biden, who is expected to become the 46th US president, it appears certain that President Donald Trump can no longer hold on to office on allegations of voter fraud. The candidate who wins a simple majority of 270 out of 538 votes of the electoral college becomes the US president. If Trump loses the 2020 election, it will be the first time an incumbent has lost in almost 30 years. The office of the US president was established in 1789, and in the 231 years since the first man was elected to the highest office in the country, 44 have people have held the title. US presidents who failed to win re-election include- John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Martin Van Buren, Benjamin Harrison, William Howard Taft, Herbert Hoover, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and George H W Bush (father of two-time president George W. Bush). Donald Trump will have only himself to blame for his downfall. In recent US history, incumbent presidents have often enjoyed a significant boost in popularity while running for re-election. This has not been the case for Donald Trump. When he officially launched his re-election bid in June 2019, Trump’s approval rating was around 43%, according to Gallup. Trump’s approval rating has barely fluctuated since then, with short-lived gains here and there.

Polling from Gallup in September and October showed Trump’s approval rating fluctuated between 42% and 46%, averaging 44%. For months, election polling has suggested Trump’s chances of re-election have been dwindling during the economic recession and the president’s disastrous response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these are not the main reasons for Trump’s defeat. His represented the far right of the nation and his stand against immigrants, liberalism and exclusiveness in foreign policy had seriously dented his leadership at home and abroad. Even after his election victory in 2016, Trump has been facing protests orchestrated by Democratic Party leaders, feminists, African-Americans, immigrants etc who have been ably supported by the mainstream liberal American media including the Washington establishment. In office, Donald Trump had acted in a manner most unbecoming of a head of state of the world’s most powerful democracy. He offended many world leaders and denigrated not only the office but also the country he heads. Besides reinforcing his image as a temperamental, ill-informed man-child, Trump continued to rave and rant as an empty vessel by keeping up his stream of offensive, irresponsible pronouncements. As a President who is fond of long rallies and short tweets, Trump’s leadership style allowed him to galvanize a base of voters who are attracted to his nationalist focus and no-holds-barred campaign style. Trump’s chaotic and disorganized approach to governing may be what thrills his supporters and frustrates his critics, it is also the reason why Trump failed at the essence of successful political leadership, or any leadership for that matter. If not making controversial remarks, Trump was busy issuing executive orders via twitter. In fact, Trump can be described as the twitter president of the USA. Trump ran his office in the White House, by firing aides at glaring regularity.

It is ironic and a cruel justice that the Donald Trump’s catchphrase “you’re fired” from his reality TV show The Apprentice has rebounded on him. In the TV show Trump as the boss, regularly fired his staff but today he finds himself fired by the people because of his incompetent behaviour.

Never put yourself in front of your circumstances and say, “I’m going to be my own providence here; I will watch this closely, or protect myself from that.” All your circumstances are in the hand of God, and therefore you don’t ever have to think they are unnatural or unique. Your part in intercessory prayer is not to agonize over how to intercede, but to use the everyday circumstances and people God puts around you by His providence to bring them before His throne, and to allow the Spirit in you the opportunity to intercede for them.

In this way God is going to touch the whole world with His saints.

Am I making the Holy Spirit’s work difficult by being vague and unsure, or by trying to do His work for Him? I must do the human side of intercession— utilizing the circumstances in which I find myself and the people who surround me. I must keep my conscious life as a sacred place for the Holy Spirit.

Then as I lift different ones to God through prayer, the Holy Spirit intercedes for them.

Trump may go, but Trumpism is here to stay A wariness of international trading agreements, overseas military commitments, and immigration regimes will persist in US positions.

The 2020 United States (US) presidential election has turned out to be strange, memorable, and tortuous.

Perhaps it was always destined to be so, given the set-up.

On the Republican side, you had an unusual incumbent in President Donald Trump. Four years ago, after running against the establishment of his own party, he won the Electoral College despite losing the popular vote. He was not viewed as presidential in his manner or disposition, a flaw acknowledged even by many of his supporters.

Over the course of his first term, he was impeached by the House of Representatives. And in the midst of a re-election campaign, he had overseen the worst public health crisis confronting the US in a century as well as a precipitous economic downturn.

And yet, Trump enjoyed steady approval ratings

of over 40% throughout the duration of his four years as president. A solid majority of Americans approved of his handling of the economy.

In the eyes of his electoral base, Trump had also delivered on his promises, such as on stemming immigration, cutting taxes, and nominating conservative Supreme Court justices.

On the Democratic side, you had a more predictable contender in former Vice-President Joe Biden.

Biden emerged as a consensus candidate after a bruising Democratic primary contest. He polled well among moderates and independents. Unlike Hillary Clinton four years ago, he had low negative ratings among likely voters, and his campaign managed to raise record amounts of funds. Biden’s critics and opponents caricatured him as geriatric and a creature of the establishment.

Yet, in the months since clinching the nomination, he fared well in public opinion surveys against Trump. On the cusp of Election Day on November 3, Biden was leading the president 52%

to 42% in national polls; he was expected to comfortably win a majority in the Electoral College, and was given a 90% chance of winning by respected election analysts.

The final results may still make 2020 one of the closest presidential elections in modern US history. Trump handily won four states that had been expected to be competitive: Florida, Texas, Ohio, and Iowa. Biden comfortably won the overall popular vote but scraped only narrow wins in the critical states of Wisconsin and Michigan.

Voting in five states that would collectively determine the winner — Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, North Carolina, and Nevada —are close and final results may take days, but Biden’s lead in Pennsylvania on Friday gives him a rather decisive edge. Although he may eventually lose the presidency, Trump managed to demonstrate considerable and durable support after four years in power. The Republican Party will likely retain control of the Senate, which the Democrats had

earlier looked poised to seize, although two run-off elections in Georgia could determine the final outcome.

The democrats did manage to retain the House of Representatives, but with fewer seats.

What explains the unexpected closeness of this year’s US elections? It certainly was not tepid voter turnout: The percentage of ballots cast may have been the highest in any US election since 1900. Based on exit polls, Biden fared well with voters under the age of 50, won two-thirds of moderate voters, over half of independents, and lured 8% of Trump supporters from four years ago.

The real reasons for surprise lay elsewhere. Public opinion surveys in key swing states overestimated Biden’s lead over Trump by between 2% and 8%.

The 5% of voters who determined their vote in the week prior to the election also broke overwhelmingly for Trump. Additionally, Trump fared better among minority groups relative to 2016, particularly older and college-educated Hispanic

voters and younger AfricanAmericans.

Although the most likely outcome at this juncture appears to be a Biden presidency, a Republican-led Senate, and a Democratic House of Representatives, Trump’s surprisingly strong showing will leave a legacy.

Trumpism will not be going away any time soon and will remain a potent force within the Republican Party. A narrower win may also serve as a check on elements of the more radical agenda of the Democrats; this could, in turn, exacerbate divisions between the Left-leaning progressive and centrist wings of the Democratic Party. Already, the two factions are deriving opposite lessons from the Republicans’ stronger-than-expected showing. While progressives believe they should not have made compromises, moderates fear that the Left alienated some conservative constituencies.

For a partner country such as India, the broad overarching implications of the election are real, even if the actual political outcomes remain fluid. Some

of the changes wrought by Trump will remain, among Republicans but also as a consequence of a divided Congress and perhaps an equally divided Democratic Party. These strains might include a wariness of international trading agreements, overseas military commitments, and immigration regimes that threaten middleclass employment.

A potential Biden presidency may offer a greater degree of predictability and professionalism, improving the foundations of American international power.

India will probably continue to find sympathetic allies in the US Senate, reflecting an alignment in thinking on the emerging strategic competition with China. New Delhi could also find in Washington a willingness to partner with India on the climate crisis, emerging technologies, and even democracy. Finally, there may be more leeway in managing the inevitable differences in perspectives that will remain.

Feeling socially distanced? A financial model for higher education

E

ven before the listlessness of the lucky hit some of us prior to lockdown being eased, a friend and I started exchanging made-up ancient proverbs. One of them was the ‘Chinese aphorism’: when there is no grass left to burn, the fire starts to sputter.

Four years before India is scheduled to go to Lok Sabha polls, this government finds itself frustratingly low on fresh turf to consume.

This may seem an odd observation, bordering on the silly, considering any opposition on a national scale – whether political, institutional or popular – seems to have succumbed to the government’s and ruling party’s thrall. But in this landscape, bereft of any real organised challenge, in its second year of its second term, this government may have come face to face with two formidable adversaries: chaos, and itself.

The first challenge is as formidable as it has been unscripted. Both the coronavirus gone viral, and the economic asphyxiation that the lockdown has left in its wake, may have eclipsed the economic downturn and its palpable effects like unemployment and sectoral slumps that had already set in before Covid-19 came to town. But even Covid-19 as the root of all necessary evil as a timely cloaking device for India being tossed about in choppy global economic waters – and its unpreparedness to ‘policy-dam’ it – seems to be malfunctioning. Because, outside the economists’ surgical masquerade ball, it matters little to Indians what the causes of India’s current situation are. Its effects, and how to make them go away, do.

Which is where one comes to this government’s second antagonist: this government. The shamanic qualities cultivated by the prime minister, and invested in by enough Indians, may be running low on their steroidal powers. And a government that owes much of its power and charm to its optics – many a time at the cost of showcasing the actual good work it does – is finding exactly that optics a bit harder to sell.

Take what has, over the last three months, become the main national discourse. It sounds like good old whataboutery, looks like good old whataboutery, even smells like good old whataboutery. NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the country will ensure ‘ease of doing business’ for its youth while they should work for providing ‘ease of living’ to people, particularly the poorest of the poor, through innovations.

Addressing the 51st annual convocation of IIT Delhi via video conferencing, he said the postCOVID-19 world is going to be very different and technology will play the biggest role in it.

COVID-19 has taught the world that globalisation is important but self-reliance is equally important, the prime minister said.

“India is fully committed to give its youth ease of doing business so that the youth through their innovation can bring about a change in the lives of crores of people of the country,” Modi said, addressing the graduating students of IIT Delhi.

“The country will give you ease of doing business but you do one thing, through your expertise, experience, talent and innovation...ensure ease of living for the poorest of the poor citizens,” he said.

AMETHI (UP), NOV 7 (PTI): The Centre-run flight training institute Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRUA) here on Saturday announced its expansion plan to begin drone pilot training courses, a first of its kind initiative by a government body.

The premier aircraft pilot training institute in Uttar Pradesh had recently entered into an agreement with Delhi-based private firm Drone Destination for the collaborative effort.

Noting that drones are an “absolutely new and emerging area with immeasurable potential and opportunities”, Ministry of Civil Aviation (MOCA) Secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola said “making of drones is becoming a reality in India”.

“We led the software revolution, and in the drone revolution also we have the potential of becoming number one. In that direction, we have taken a small step. The first thing is even drone operations require pilots and one of the first training centres for drones is being established in IGRUA,” Kharola said.

“The entire regulatory framework for drones has been put in place and very soon drones would be regulated, monitored, observed and controlled just as is being done for

aircraft,” he added.

He also noted that in the coming years, the number of drones flying in the Indian skies may go into hundreds of thousands and their monitoring would be a challenge.

“The challenge is that we have to ensure that not only we become leaders in drone manufacturing but also in their management,” Kharola said.

He also mooted the idea for IGRUA, a government-run autonomous institute, to eventually move into drone manufacturing, design and management besides imparting training for its pilots.

He said the course duration would be around two-weeks and added that the institute will soon also begin a programme on English Language Proficiency (ELP).

Says farmers still around station premises

NEW DELHI, NOV 7 (PTI): The railways on Saturday declined to resume only goods train services in Punjab as demanded by agitating farmers, who cleared tracks after squatting on them for over 40 days, and said it will operate both freight and passenger trains or none.

Addressing a press conference online, Railway Board Chairman V K Yadav said states cannot “pick and choose” and it is not feasible to allow anyone to dictate which trains to run on which tracks. He said protesters still remained at one railway station in Punjab and have assembled just outside station premises in 22 other places threatening to move to tracks if passenger trains are run.

“Statements from both the protesters and the state government are similar -- the tracks are clear for freight trains only. IR (Indian Railways) cannot operate in that way. If tracks are clear, they are clear for both freight and passenger trains. We request that the running of trains be left to the railways,” he said.

Rejecting the protesters’ demand, Yadav said, “We cannot run trains in a situation where protesters are demanding that we run certain trains and there is no assurance from the state government of the safety and security of those trains.

“They (protesters) have conveyed to our station masters that they will allow railways to run freight trains

but will come on the tracks if we run passenger trains.

Our operating staff is not confident about running trains under these circumstances,” he said.

Yadav reiterated that the railways needs 100 per cent security clearance from the state government to resume train operations in Punjab. He said the railways is seeking track clearance in all sections for all kinds of train operations, adding that “states cannot pick and choose type of trains for their convenience”.

Yadav said that all passenger trains scheduled to be operated during the current festival season were fully booked and their cancellation was inconveniencing a lot of passengers.

The railways also tried to run just goods trains between October 22 and October 24 and this had raised huge security concerns.

A press release by the department of Agriculture stated that, during interaction with Botsa village elders, farmers and the officers accompanying him, Kikheto stated that purpose of the visit was to improve existing traditional farming to a sustainable farming.

While stressing that, although one cannot stop the traditional methods of jhum, terrace cultivation, which may not be economically viable or ecologically sustainable, Kikheto said that one could not stop it as it has been practiced since time immemorial. Considering the possibility of food pandemic sooner or later, he said that one needed to prepare for self sufficiency where ISF was of utmost importance. APC said that IFS should be undertaken in all feasible areas so that various activities under agri and allied departments can be taken up in cluster approach. New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): Adani Enterprises Ltd placed winning bids for sole coal blocks put on auction by the government on the sixth for commercial mining lease auctions on Saturday. Adani Enterprises placed the winning bid for Gondulpara coal block in Jharkhand. The mine placed on auction on the sixth day has a total coal reserve of over 176.33 million tonne and peak rated annual capacity is estimated at 4 million tonne (mt).

The e-auction witnessed strong competition amongst the bidders with the mine attracting good premium over the floor price, a coal ministry statement on the the sixth day of auction said. The bid got values of over 20 per cent of the reserve price while the annual revenue generated from the mine will be to the tune of Rs 520.92 crore.

New Delhi, Nov 7 (IANS): More than 11 lakh enterprises have got themselves registered under the new process for registration of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) that has come into effect in the name of ‘Udyam Registration’ from July 1.

The new process launched in July offers online system of registration for MSMEs. This follows revised definition of MSMEs announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in May as part of the relief package for the industry amid the Covid-19 outbreak. Under the changes, the MSME Ministry has also launched a new portal for MSME/Udyam registration. The portal has also been seamlessly integrated with CBDT and GST networks as also with the GeM. Through this integration, government is now offering now MSME registration as a totally paperless exercise.

Ethiopia vows to replace Tigray govt ADDIS ABABA, NOV 7 (AGENCIES): Ethiopian lawmakers voted Saturday to replace the current government of the federal state of Tigray, after the army launched air strikes to destroy military assets in the region in a worsening internal conflict.

Fears are mounting over the prospect of civil war after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent federal troops and aircraft into the region with which Addis Ababa has been embroiled in a bitter feud.

Abiy said Friday that air strikes had already neutralised “rockets that can hit a range of 300 kilometres (186 miles) from where they are stationed in Mekele City and other places in the vicinity”, state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate reported.

Three days after he announced a military operation against the state’s r uling Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) who he has described as a “criminal clique” bent on destabilising the country, lawmakers voted to abolish the state government.

Long-simmering feud The key base is one of the most heavily armoured in the country, a legacy of Ethiopia’s war with neighbouring Eritrea which borders the Tigray region.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) dominated politics in Ethiopia for nearly three de-

cades before Abiy came to power in 2018 on the back of anti-government protests. Tigrayans make up only about six percent of a population of more than 110 million people.

Their state is one of 10 ethnic-based federal regions that make up the country.

Under Abiy, Tigray’s leaders have complained of being unfairly targeted in corruption prosecutions, removed from top positions and broadly scapegoated for the country’s woes.

The feud became more intense after Tigray held its own elections in September, defying Abiy’s government which had decided to postpone national polls due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Addis Ababa ruled the Tigray government was unlawful and in return Tigray said it no longer recognised Abiy’s administration.

The federal government then slashed funding to the region, which the TPLF said was “tantamount to an act of war”.

Conflict would be ‘devastating’ As rhetoric heated up, Abiy, the winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize, announced Wednesday he had ordered military operations in Tigray in

response to an “attack” on a federal military camp by the TPLF. The TPLF denies the attack occurred and accuses Abiy of concocting the story to justify deploying the military against it.

Diplomats and humanitarian sources say fighting has unfolded in the west, including along the border between Tigray and the Amhara region to the south.

Some 25 combatants -- the majority of them federal forces -- have been treated at a hospital in the Amhara town of Abdurafi, and five deaths have been reported there, a humanitarian source said Friday.

An additional 50 fighters have been treated in the town of Dansha, while a further 30 have been transferred to a hospital in Gondar, roughly 180 kilometres south of the Tigray border, the source said.

Unless the fighting stops soon, conflict in Tigray “will be devastating not just for the country but for the entire Horn of Africa,” International Crisis Group said in a statement this week. Given Tigray’s considerable military capabilities and its estimated 250,000 troops, war could be “lengthy and bloody”, it said.

Nawaz Sharif trying to create ‘rebellion’ in Pak Army: PM Khan

ISLAMABAD, NOV 7 (PTI): Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Saturday lashed out at three-time former premier Nawaz Sharif, describing him as a “jackal” who is trying to create “rebellion” in the Army by accusing it of involvement in the country’s politics and calling for a change in the military as well as the ISI leadership.

Sharif, the 70-yearold supreme leader of the Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) who was ousted from power in 2017 by the apex court on graft charges, had last month for the first time directly named Army chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa and ISI head Lt Gen Faiz Hameed for interfering in the general elections of 2018 to ensure victory of Khan.

Sharif had made the comments virtually on October 16 during a joint rally organised by the Opposition parties under the banner of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), formed to oust the Khanled Pakistan Tehreek-eInsaaf (PTI) government.

Prime Minister Khan said that Sharif is sitting in London “like a Jackal” and targeting the Army.

Hitting out at Sharif, Khan said the former prime

minister was “trying to stir up a rebellion in the Pakistan Army by alleging it is involved in politics and calling for changing the Army and ISI chiefs,” Khan said while addressing a public gathering in Mingora in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

The powerful army, which has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 70 plus years of existence, has hitherto wielded considerable power in the matters of security and foreign policy.

However, the Army has denied meddling in the country’s politics. Prime Minister Khan also denies that the Army helped him win the election in 2018.

Khan said that Sharif had run away from the country under the pretext of illness, adding that he was a “money worshipper” and had amassed his wealth by looting the country, the Dawn newspaper reported.

The PML-N chief, currently out on bail, is facing multiple corruption charges. The Islamabad High Court had allowed him to go to London for medical treatment in November last year for a period of eight weeks for medical treatment. But he did

not come back, while his lawyers told the court that he was still recovering.

Khan also slammed Sharif ’s daughter Maryam Nawaz for openly accusing the Army of interfering in politics. She is taking advantage of being a woman because women are given respect in Pakistan, he said.

“Nawaz Sharif and his sons cannot dare attack the Pakistan Army in the country and this is why they have fled abroad. Since Maryam Nawaz knows that we will not send her behind bars because she is a woman, she has started spewing venom against the Army,” he said.

Khan said Pakistanis would never allow corrupt politicians to hurl allegations against the Army.

Rebuking the “corrupt political leaders who have gathered under the Pakistan Democratic Movement”, Khan said a group of thieves and looters have gathered who were asking for special concessions after looting the country.

“Two major political parties looted the country during the past 30 years but now it is a decisive time to take action against the corrupt and looters,” he claimed.

UAE announces relaxing of Islamic laws Egyptians vote in 2nd stage of parliamentary election DUBAI, NOV 7 (AP): The United Arab Emirates announced on Saturday a major overhaul of the country’s Islamic personal laws, allowing unmarried couples to cohabitate, loosening alcohol restrictions and criminalising so-called “honour killings.”

The broadening of personal freedoms reflects the changing profile of a country that has sought to bill itself as a skyscraper-studded destination for Western tourists, fortune-seekers and businesses despite its legal system based on a hard-line interpretation of Islamic law. The changes also reflect the efforts of the Emirates’ rulers to keep pace with a rapidly changing society at home.

The announcement also follows a historic USbrokered deal to normalise

relations between the UAE and Israel, which is expected to bring an influx of Israeli tourists and investment.

Changes include scrapping penalties for alcohol consumption, sales and possession for those 21 and over.

The legal reforms were announced on state-run WAM news agency and detailed in state-linked newspaper The National. Previously, individuals needed a liquor license to purchase, transport or have alcohol in their homes. The new rule would apparently allow Muslims who have been barred from obtaining licenses to drink alcoholic beverages freely.

Another amendment allows for “cohabitation of unmarried couples,” which has long been a crime in the UAE. Authorities, especially in the more free-wheeling financial hub of Dubai,

CAIRO, NOV 7 (AGENCIES): Egyptians began voting Saturday in the second and final stage of the country’s parliamentary elections, after a relatively low turnout in the first stage that embarrassed the government of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

Polling centers opened at 9 a.m. in 13 of Egypt’s 27 provinces, including the capital Cairo and the restive northern part of the Sinai Peninsula. El-Sissi casted his ballot early Wednesday in Cairo’s Heliopolis district, according to his office. More than 31 million people are eligible to vote in this stage.

WASHINGTON, NOV 7 (AP): The conservative evangelical Christians who helped send Donald Trump to the White House four years ago stuck by him in 2020. But even if Trump doesn’t get a second term, some conservative Christians see reasons to celebrate in this year’s election results.

White evangelical voters made up 23% of the vote nationwide and overwhelmingly favoured Trump this fall, with about 8 in 10 backing him, according to AP VoteCast.

Their support may not have been enough to re-elect the president — with Democratic nominee Joe Biden in the lead as states continued to count votes Friday — yet evangelicals still took heart in their strong presence at the polls and the GOP’s success in down-ballot races.

“There’s no question that we did our job,” Ralph Reed, the veteran GOP activist who founded the Faith and Freedom Coalition nonprofit, said of his fellow conservative Christians.

Like most fellow evangelicals, Reed left room for the president to eke out a victory even as that path appeared slim Friday. But he also singled out Democrats’ lackluster showing in key congressional races as a positive sign and suggested that religious conservatives might see an opportunity to work with a Biden administration that tacks away from

guez said, “if we can reconcile the message and the messenger, I think the future looks pretty amazing.”

Among Latinos, 61% of evangelicals backed Trump, according to AP VoteCast, far higher than the 35% he received from Latinos overall.

Biden’s campaign had tried to peel off parts of Trump’s evangelical base as part of its active faith outreach operation. But Robert Jones, author of two books about white Christians, said there was no erosion of white evangelicals’ support for Trump and the Republican Party in this election — and that applied to both men and women in that demographic.

“They absolutely stood by their man,” said Jones, who oversees frequent surveys of religious Americans as CEO of the Public Religion Research Institute, an independent Washingtonbased nonprofit.

Jones said white evangelicals, thanks to their high turnout rate, continue to

have an outsized influence on election results, both nationally and in certain states. Without their political engagement, Democrats would have made greater inroads this year in states such as Texas and North Carolina, he said.

Of course, some of the president’s closest evangelical allies are not yet ready to acknowledge the prospect of a Biden victory. Trump is vowing to continue challenging the outcome, promoting baseless voter fraud allegations in an effort to chip at public confidence in the process.

Texas-based megachurch pastor Jack Graham, a longtime Trump backer, tweeted Thursday night that he is “praying that the lies and cheating will be exposed and (Trump) will be fairly re elected.”

Paula White-Cain, who serves as Trump’s personal pastor and White House faith adviser, led a prayer this week for the election and described hearing “a sound of victory.”

Overshadowing the polls is the coronavirus and restrictions to contain it, which are likely to lower turnout despite government plans for social distancing and other safety measures.

Suu Kyi’s party is heavily favoured to win again, though probably with a reduced majority. Suu Kyi is by far the country’s most popular politician, and the NLD has a strong national network, reinforced by holding the levers of state power.

Nevertheless the NLD has been criticised for lacking vision and adopting some of the more authoritarian methods of its military predecessors, especially targeting critics through the courts.

Suu Kyi’s party has lost the cooperation of many ethnic minority parties, which are popular in their border-area homelands. In 2015, those parties were tacit allies with the NLD and arranged not to compete strongly where splitting the vote might give victory to the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, or USDP. Suu Kyi’s failure to come through with an agreement giving ethnic minorities the greater political autonomy they have sought for decades has disenchanted them, and this year they will be working against the NLD rather than with it. There

are around 60 small ethnic parties.

The main opposition USDP was founded as a proxy for the military and again is the NLD’s strongest competitor. It is well-funded and well-organised. Whether voters still see it as tainted by its association with previous military regimes is not clear.

To a large extent, the polls are seen as a referendum on Suu Kyi’s five years in power, just as the 2015 election was seen as a judgment on military rule.

There has been economic growth, but it benefited a tiny portion of the population in one of the region’s poorest countries, and fell short of popular expectations.

Not only were ethnic minority groups disappointed by Suu Kyi’s failure to grant them greater autonomy, but in the western state of Rakhine, the well-trained and well-armed Arakan Army — a group claiming to represent the Buddhist Rakhine ethnic group — has risen to become the biggest military threat in years.

The Election Commission’s cancellation of voting in some areas where parties critical of the government were certain to win seats has drawn sharp criticism. The move is estimated to have disenfranchised more than 1 million people.

The alternative metal legends, all of whom are of Armenian descent, have reunited to record and release the songs in a bid to raise awareness and funds amid “a dire and serious war being perpetrated upon [their] cultural homelands”, referencing the recently erupted conflict between Artsakh and Azerbaijan.

oofed animals like horses and rhinos e vo l ve d f r o m a strange sheep-sized animal that looked like a cross between a pig and a dog and roamed in India almost 55 million years ago., researchers have claimed.

Experts from Johns Hopkins University who explored mines in Gujarat discovered the remains of the strange creature called Cambaytherium.

Cambaytherium is an extinct cousin of perissodactyls (the group of mammals that includes horses, rhinos, and tapirs) that lived on the Indian subcontinent almost 55 million years ago.

The first trip to Rajasthan in 2001 had little success, “Although we found only a few fish bones on that trip, the following year our

Indian colleague, Rajendra Rana, continued exploring lignite mines to the south and came upon Vastan Mine in Gujarat,” said Ken Rose, emeritus professor at Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the study.

This new mine proved much more promising.

“In 2004, our team was able to return to the mine, where our Belgian collaborator Thierry Smith found the first mammal fossils, including Cambaytherium,” Rose said in a paper published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.

Encouraged, the team returned to the mines in Gujarat and collected fossilised bones of Cambaytherium and many other vertebrates, despite challenging conditions.

Cambaytherium repre-

sents an evolutionary stage more primitive than any known perissodactyl, supporting origin for the group in or near India --before they dispersed to other continents when the land connection with Asia formed.

Researchers said the animal likely evolved at a time India was still an island.

The results also confirm a theory first proposed 30 years ago that the origin of horses can be traced to India during its northward drift from Madagascar.

“In 1990, Krause & Maas proposed that these orders might have evolved in India, during its northward drift from Madagascar, dispersing across the northern continents when India collided with Asia,” Rose said.

The latest finding is the culmination of 15 years of work by a global team of researchers and involved piecing together the complete skeletal anatomy of Cambaytherium from over 350 fossils unearthed throughout India.

Despite the abundance of perissodactyls in the Northern Hemisphere, Cambaytherium suggests that the group likely evolved in isolation in or near India during the Paleocene (66-56 million years ago), before dispersing to other continents when the land connection with Asia formed.

Cambaytherium, first described in 2005, is the most primitive member of an extinct group that branched off just before the evolution of perissodactyls.

clip from BLACKPINK‘s latest reality program has drawn in 2.5 million views since it dropped yesterday, as the girls were seen hugging adorable baby pandas.

But it’s trending in China for a whole different reason.

According to C-netizens and officials, the BLACKPINK members were endangering the baby panda and violating strict regulations in the video—and now the Chinese government’s forestry administration is getting involved.

This week, BLACKPINK released the preview clip for their final episode of the reality show 24/365 with BLACKPINK. The clip shows all four members heading to the Everland theme park and zoo to spend time with the resident giant pandas.

Alongside making a meal for the mother panda, they also got to cuddle up to a precious 3-month-old cub named Fubao.

However, while many

fans found the preview simply adorable, criticism of the clip soon went viral across social media in China. According to Chinese netizens and officials, the show depicts “endangerment” of the baby panda.

While baby Fubao was born in South Korea this year, he doesn’t belong to the Korean zoo.

The Chinese government actually owns almost every giant panda in the world, and zoos across the

world simply rent them.

Panda loan costs run up to $1 million USD per year on 10-year “panda diplomacy” contracts, and foreign zoos must pay an additional $400,000 USD tax for any baby cubs born in their care.

Since the pandas at Everland’s Panda World belong to China, the zoo is expected to follow strict regulations to protect the bears from any illnesses.

One of these rules mandates that members of

the public must not touch the pandas or come into close contact with them in any way. According to the Chinese State Forestry Administration, allowing non-professionals to touch the pandas increases their risk of contracting a zoonotic infection.

On top of that, the rules state that people with pets should not come into close contact with the pandas in order to further prevent the spread of disease. Back in 2015, sev-

eral pandas died of canine distemper—a virus found in domestic dogs. Since giant pandas are currently considered endangered, the Chinese government considers their welfare to be of the utmost importance.

The fact that the BLACKPINK members were not professional caretakers were not the only cause for concern by the Chinese netizens. Most of the members are known to have multiple dogs and cats at home. As a result, an outcry erupted among Chinese netizens shortly after the 24/365 with BLACKPINK preview dropped on YouTube. One news post about the incident on Weibo garnered over 25 million video views, 800,000 likes, and 10,000 comments in around 15 hours.

Commenters also pointed out that the members were wearing makeup and perfume and did not have gloves on at the time, further violating the strict care regarding the pandas.

Himachal hockey players resume activities

Shimla, Nov 7 (IANS): Hockey players in Himachal Pradesh have resumed sports activities keeping in mind the detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and guidelines provided by Hockey India.

The detailed SOP and guidelines were shared with all the state member units

as early as April 2020 with the intent of having them well-prepared and ready for systematic rollout.

Around 60 players have resumed limited activities in Himachal Pradesh. The players, who have begun activities, are between the age of 18 and 21. The Himachal Pradesh hockey unit is plan-

In 2016 she went scuba diving off Andaman coast. Her next plan is cycling, Lepcha added.
