Teen becomes Finland’s Prime Minister for a day
Aava Murto
HELSINKI, OCT 8 (IANS): A 16-year-old teenager, who actively campaigns on climate and human rights issues, became the Prime Minister of Finland for a day, as part of the country’s incumbent leader Sanna Marin’s fight to end gender gap, the media report. On Wednesday, Marin stepped aside letting Aava Murto to take her position for a day during which the latter met politicians and highlighted women’s rights in technology, the BBC reported. This is the fourth year of Finland’s participation in humanitarian organisation Plan International’s “Girls Takeover” initiative, which allows teenagers from countries from across the globe to step into the shoes of leaders and other sectors for a day. This year’s focus is on
promoting digital skills and technological opportunities for girls, with Kenya, Peru, Sudan and Vietnam among the countries holding their own swaps. In a speech, Murto said: “It is a pleasure to be speaking here before you today - although, in a way, I wish that I did not have to stand here, that campaigns like the Girls’ Takeover were no longer necessary. “However, the truth is that we have not yet achieved gender equality - not anywhere on earth. Although we have accomplished a great lot of good in this area, there is still much work that needs to be done.” Speaking ahead of the event, Marin, who became the world’s youngest Prime Minister when she was sworn in last year at the age of 34, stressed the importance of ensuring technologies are made “accessible to everyone”, reports the BBC. “They must not deepen the digital divide between countries or within societies.” Marin is the Finland’s third female premier and leads a centre-left coalition with four other parties - all headed by women, three of whom are under 35.
wins Nobel literature prize
STOCKHOLM, OCT 8 (AP): American poet Louise Glück won the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday for her “candid and uncompromising” work, becoming the first US winner since Bob Dylan in 2016. The Nobel Committee praised the writer “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” The prize was announced in Stockholm by Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy. New York-born Glück, 77, who is a professor of English at Yale University, made her debut in 1968 with “Firstborn,” and “was soon acclaimed as one of the most prominent poets in American contemporary literature,” the Nobel Academy said. Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel literature committee, said Glück’s 12 collections of poetry were “characterized by striving for clarity.” They include “Descending Figure,” “The Triumph of Achilles” and “Ararat.” Olsson said her verses, which often draw on classical influences and examine family life, were marked by an “austere but also playful intelligence and a refined

Jordanian King appoints new PM
Will hold China ‘accountable’ for what it did to US with Covid: Pence
AMMAN, OCT 8 (IANS): Jordan’s King Abdullah has appointed Bisher AlKhasawneh, a royal palace adviser, as the country’s new Prime Minister following Omar Razzaz’s resignation from the post, it was reported. Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, the Royal Hashemite Court said: “His Majesty King Abdullah II tasks Bisher Khasawneh with forming a new Cabinet.” the Amman-based Roya News reported. According to the palace, Al-Khasawneh, also a former Minister of Foreign Affairs and a top envoy, will now oversee the upcoming parliamentary elections on November 10. Wednesday’s development comes after the Monarch accepted the outgoing Prime Minister’s resignation on October 3. On September 27, King Abdullah had dissolved the House of Representatives paving the way for the upcoming polls. The House of Representatives or the lower House comprises 130 seats, of which 115 members are elected by an open list proportional representation from 23 constituencies of between three and nine seats in size and 15 seats reserved for women.
WASHINGTON, OCT 8 (AP): The US Vice President Mike Pence expressed that the Donald Trump administration wants to improve its relationship with China but it is going to hold Beijing “accountable” for what it did to America with the deadly coronavirus. During the only vice presidential debate with his Democratic Party challenger Kamala Harris ahead of the November 3 presidential election, Pence asserted that China is to blame for the coronavirus. “We want to improve the relationship but we’re gonna level the playing field and we’re gonna hold China accountable for what they did to America with the coronavirus,” Pence said during the debate held at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night. “President Trump is not happy about it. He’s made that very clear. Made it clear again today. And China and the World Health Organisation did not play straight with the American people. They did not let our personnel into China to get information on the coronavirus until the middle of February,” the Republican vice president said. The coronavirus, which first emerged in China’s Wuhan city in December last
year, has so far infected over 35 million people and killed more than 1 million across the world, according to Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center. The US is the worst affected country with over 7.5 million cases and more than 2,10,000 deaths. Pence said that President Trump is “dealing with China from the outset of this administration, standing up to China that had been taking advantage of America for decades in the wake of Biden’s cheerleading for China.” “ P r e s i d e n t Tr u m p made that decision before the end of January to suspend all travel from China. And again, the American people deserve to know Joe Biden opposed President Trump’s decision to suspend all travel from China. He said it was hysterical. He said it was xenophobic, but President Trump has stood up to China. We are gonna continue to stand strong,” the Vice President said. Harris alleged that the Trump administration’s perspective and approach to China has resulted in the loss of American lives, American jobs and America’s standing. “There is a weird obsession that President Trump has had with getting rid of whatever accomplishment was achieved by President
Mike Pence
Obama and Vice President Biden. For example, they created within the White House an office that basically was responsible for monitoring pandemics. They got rid of it,” she alleged. Pence immediately said that this is not true. “There was a team of disease experts that President Obama and Vice President Biden dispatched to China to monitor what is now predictable and what might happen. They pulled them out. We now are looking at 210,000 Americans who have lost their lives,” Harris said. The American consumers are paying thousands of dollars more for goods because of that failed trade war with China, she said. “Let’s talk about standing. Pew, a reputable research firm, has done an analysis that shows that leaders of all of our formerly
representing the whole of China,” the embassy said. “We hope Indian media can stick to Indian government’s position on Taiwan question and do not violate the ‘One China’ principle. “In particular, Taiwan shall not be referred to as a ‘country (nation)’ or ‘Republic of China’ or the leader of China’s Taiwan region as ‘President’, so as not to send the wrong signals to the general public.” Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu scoffed at Beijing’s advice to Indian media. “India is the largest
democracy on Earth with a vibrant press & freedomloving people. But it looks like communist #China is hoping to march into the subcontinent by imposing censorship. #Taiwan’s Indian friends will have one reply: GET LOST!” he said in a tweet. New Delhi has no formal diplomatic relations with Taipei, but both sides have close business and cultural ties. India’s government has carefully avoided upsetting China over Taiwan. But relations became fraught after 20 Indian soldiers were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in June, and there have been calls from some Indian nationalist groups for a boycott of Chinese goods. “The Chinese government behaves like a street goon, not like an aspiring super-power. It threatens us,” said Nitin Gokhale, the editor of a defence and security website, after receiving the Chinese embassy’s email.
ROME, OCT 8 (IANS): Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte on Thursday announced his government’s decision to make wearing of masks mandatory in outdoor spaces in an effort to curb the further spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. In his announcement, Conte said that latest measure was required to avoid returning to another economically devastating lockdown in Italy, one of the worst-hit countries in Europe, the BBC reported. “From now on, masks and protective gear have to be brought with us when we leave our house and worn. We have to wear them all the time unless we are in a situation of continuous isolation,” he was quoted as saying. Besides outdoor spaces, masks must also be worn in shops, offices, on public transport, and in bars and restaurants when not seated at a table, the Prime Minister further
said.
Italians faced some of the strictest lockdown measures in the world when the country became the first in Europe to be overwhelmed by the pandemic earlier in the year.
allied countries have now decided that they hold in greater esteem and respect (Chinese President) Xi Jinping, the head of the Chinese Communist Party, than they do Donald Trump, the president of the United States, the commander-in-chief of the United States. This is where we are today because
of a failure of leadership by this administration,” Harris said. The Democratic vice-presidential candidate alleged that Trump has betrayed America’s friends and embraced dictators around the world. “Let’s take for example Russia. America’s intelligence community told us Russia interfered in the election of the president of the United States in 2016 and is playing in 2020. Christopher Wray, the director of the FBI, said the same. “But Donald Trump, the commander-in-chief of the United States of America, prefers to take the word of Vladimir Putin over the word of the American intelligence community,” she alleged.

Coming just months after deadly clashes between Indian and Chinese troops on the disputed Himalayan border between the two Asian giants, the controversy has flared at a time when Indian sentiments toward China are filled with antipathy and suspicion. After the academy revamped itself in a bid to regain the trust of the Nobel Foundation, two laureates were named last year, with the 2018 prize going to Poland’s Olga Tokarczuk and the 2019 award to Austria’s Peter Handke. But Handke’s prize caused a storm of protest: A strong supporter of the Serbs during the 1990s Balkan wars, he has been called an apologist for Serbian war crimes. Several countries including Albania, Bosnia and Turkey boycotted the Nobel awards ceremony in protest, and a member of the committee that nominates candidates for the literature prize resigned. On Monday, the Nobel Committee awarded the prize for physiology and medicine for discovering the liver-ravaging hepatitis C virus. Tuesday’s prize for physics honored breakthroughs in understanding the mysteries of cosmic black holes, and the chemistry prize on Wednesday went to scientists behind a powerful geneediting tool.

Azerbaijan says 31 Azeri civilians have been killed and 154 wounded since Sept. 27 but have not disclosed information about military casualties. Nagor no-Karabakh said 350 of its military personnel and 19 civilians have been killed. Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s main demand for a ceasefire is for Armenia to set a timetable for a withdrawal from NagornoKarabakh and surrounding Azeri territories. Armenia has ruled out a withdrawal from territory it considers its historic homelands. It has also accused Turkey of military involvement in the conflict and sending in mercenaries, allegations denied by Ankara.

YEREVAN/BAKU/GEN E VA ( AG E N C I E S ) : Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenians fought with artillery and heavy guns on Thursday as the United States, France and Russia stepped up efforts to secure a ceasefire and avert a wider war in the South Caucasus, reports reuters. Azerbaijan said the city of Ganja had come under fire, deep inside its territory. Ethnic Armenians who control the mountain enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh inside Azerbaijan said Stepanakert, its main city, had been shelled by Azeri forces. In a sign of growing alarm in the region, the head of a six-country military alliance that is led by Russia and includes Armenia warned that the group could intervene if Armenian sovereignty were threatened. The continued fighting and rising tension underlined the difficulties facing U.S., Russian and French officials meeting in Geneva to try to halt fighting in which at least 400 people have been killed since it broke out on Sept. 27. Covid-19 has prolonged effect on many during pregnancy
R
e s e a r c h e r s h ave found that symptoms for pregnant women with Covid-19 can be prolonged, lasting two months or longer. In the study, published in the journal Obstetrics & Gynecology, the research team analysed the clinical course and outcomes of 594 women who tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus during pregnancy. They found that the most common early symptoms for pregnant women were cough, sore throat, body ache and fever. Half
of the participants still had symptoms after three weeks and 25 per cent had symptoms after eight weeks. “We found that pregnant people with Covid-19 can expect a prolonged time with symptoms,” said study senior author Vanessa L Jacoby from the University of California San Francisco in the US. “Covid-19 symptoms during pregnancy can last a long time, and have a significant impact on health and wellbeing,” Jacoby added. search on the SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy has primarily centred on hospitalized patients, the new analysis focused on ambulatory patients, who represent the overwhelming majority of adults with the virus. Study participants tested positive between March 22 and July 10 and had a mean age of 31 years. The average gestational age at the time of enrolment in the study was approximately 24 weeks. The researchers found several common symptoms
of Covid-19, but also that symptoms related to the virus were complicated by overlapping symptoms of normal pregnancy, including nausea, fatigue and congestion. Their findings also showed that primary first symptoms were cough (20 per cent), sore throat (16 per cent), body ache (12 per cent), and fever (12 per cent); by comparison, fever occurs in 43 per cent of non-pregnant hospitalised patients. According to the study, loss of taste or smell was the first symptom in six per cent of pregnant women, other symptoms included shortness of breath, runny nose, sneezing, nausea, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, or dizziness. The median time for symptoms to resolve was 37 days, the research has found. “The majority of participants in our study population had mild disease and were not hospitalised. Even so, it took a median of 37 days for symptoms to ease,” the study authors wrote. “Our results can help pregnant people and their clinicians better understand what to expect with Covid-19 infection,” they noted. “Aaj Tak ‘did not conduct the due diligence required prior to telecasting the tweets and attributing them to Rajput’.” It also said that videos of the same programmes, if hosted on the website of the broadcasters, YouTube or other links, should be removed immediately. AajTak had published a report on Rajput’s “last tweets” on June 16, two days after the actor was found dead in his house in Mumbai. Aaj Tak had also tweeted the article from its official Twitter account. The tweet where the late actor allegedly hinted taking his own life was subsequently deleted. f you want your kids to be more intelligent and sharper, read on. Neuroscientists have found new evidence that learning to play an instrument may be good for the brain. According to the study, musically trained children have greater activation in brain regions related to attention control and executive functions, known to be associated with improved reading, higher resilience, greater creativity, and a better quality of life. “Our most important finding is that two different mechanisms seem to underlie the better performance of musically trained children in the attention and working memory (WM) task,” said study author Leonie Kausel from Pontifical Catholic University in Chile. “One that supports more domain-general attention mechanisms and another that supports more domain-specific auditory encoding mechanisms,” Kausel added. Here, “domain” refers to how sensorial modalities -- types of senses such as heat, sound, or light -- are encoded by the brain, while domain-specific means that only one vs. more than one sensorial modal-

French open: Kenin to play Iga in final Busta accuses Djokovic of feigning injury PARIS, OCT 8 (AGENCIES): The French Open women’s final will be contested between Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin and Polish teenager Iga Swiatek after two contrasting displays in their semi-finals. Swiatek, 19, needed only 70 minutes to beat the Argentine Nadia Podoroska 6-2 6-1 to reach her first major final. American Kenin, 21, overcame Czech seventh seed Petra Kvitova 6-4 7-5. Fourth seed Kenin produced controlled tennis but had to save 10 break-points against the two-time major winner. “Sofia is on fire this year,” said Swiatek after her win over the world number 131. “I don’t want to think about it - I’m just happy I’m in the final.” Having overwhelmed Romanian top seed Simona Halep in the fourth round, Swiatek will not fear Melbourne

champion Kenin. Kenin who defended brilliantly against Kvitova will have to produce a repeat performance against a Swiatek forehand which at times reached 80mph-plus against Podoroska. The teenager
produced 11 groundstroke winners on that side, out of a total of 22. Podoroska, the first qualifier in the Open era to reach the French Open women’s semi-final, also has a strong forehand side but
was never given a chance to get into her rhythm. The 23-year-old’s only bright moment came in the fifth game of the second set when she broke the Pole, although she needed four bites at it. Swiatek broke back straight away before serving out for victory at a cold and breezy Philippe Chatrier. “I’m surprised,” Swiatek said of her run to the final. “But I always knew if I was going to reach a Grand Slam final it would be the French Open. It’s like a dream come true. “I wanted to play this match as if it was the first round, I didn’t want to think it was a semi-final, because it would have stressed me out.” Swiatek is only the second woman from Poland to reach the final at Roland Garros - the last was Jadwiga Jedrzejowska, who finished runner-up in 1939.
PARIS, OCT 8 (AGENCIES): Pablo Carreno Busta made a startling accusation on Wednesday when he alleged that top seed Novak DJokovic was feigning injury concerns during their quarter-final meetings at French Open 2020. 17th seed Carreno Busta took the first set 6-4 only to go down in 4 sets and crash out of the competition, reports India Today. Novak Djokovic seemingly wasn’t in top gear in the first set as he had headed into the match with a strap on his neck and his movements were restricted. Carreno Busta though was ruthless as he came up with spotless service games while Djokovic was struggling with it, getting only 40 percent of his first serves in. After losing the first set, Djokovic received
Pablo Carreno Busta
treatment on-court as his trainer worked on his upper-left arm. Djokovic was feeling uncomfortable but after the on-court treatment, the Serb was able to manage a strong comeback and fend off the threat from the 17th-seed Spaniard. Djokovic needed 3 hours and 10 minutes to beat Carreno Busta 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4 but the Spaniard wasn’t happy with the treatment Djokovic received. Notably, Carreno Busta had beaten
Djokovic when the Serb was defaulted during his Round of 16 match at US Open -- the only loss for the World No. 1 in the ongoing season. “Each time he is in trouble he usually does it, that means to say that he was in trouble, that he wasn’t comfortable and that I was playing at a high level and was causing him to doubt himself. Every time a match gets complicated he asks for medical assistance. He has been doing this for a long time. I already knew that. I knew it would happen at the US Open, I knew it would happen here and I know it will keep on happening,”
Carreno Busta said. “I don’t know if it’s something chronic in his shoulder or just mental, but he didn’t put me off.” Don’t want to get into it too much: Djokovic Meanwhile, Djokovic said he did not feel great before coming into the match but he is feeling okay after overcoming his neck and shoulder issues during the quarter-final. Djokovic will face 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-final as he bids to win his 18th Grand Slam at Roland Garros this year. “I definitely didn’t feel great coming onto the court today, a few things happened in the warm-up.

IPL: SRH beat KXIP by 69 runs
Dubai, Oct 8 (PTI): Jonny Bairstow shone with the bat with a 97-run knock before star leg-spinner Rashid Khan snared three wickets in an impressive bowling display to guide Sunrisers Hyderabad to a comfortable 69-run win over Kings XI Punjab in an IPL match here on Thursday. Bairstow and captain David Warner (52) took the opposition bowlers to the cleaners with a 160run opening stand as SRH scored an imposing 201 for six after opting to bat, even though KXIP made a brilliant comeback by taking six wickets in the final five overs. The England wicketkeeper batsman hit seven fours and six sixes during his 55-ball knock, while Warner consumed 40 balls for his 52 to set up SRH’s third win from six matches. KXIP made amends of their woeful death overs bowling by conceding just 41 runs in the last five overs and taking six wickets in the process with leg-spinner

Ravi Bishnoi (3/29) triggering the collapse but that could not stop SRH from crossing the 200-run mark. Chasing a stiff target of 202, KXIP were all out for 132 in 16.5 overs to slump to their fifth defeat -- and fourth on the trot -- in six matches to remain at the bottom of the points table.
Rashid Khan was the most impressive SRH bowler as he returned with figures of 3/12 from his four overs. Only Nicholas Pooran (77 off 37 balls; 5 fours and 7 sixes) gave a fight for KXIP with his maiden half century and the season’s fastest fifty -- off just
17 balls. He hit six fours -- three of them on the trot -- to take 28 runs off a hapless Abdul Samad. KXIP made a disastrous start to their run chase as they lost two wickets inside five overs. In-form Mayank Agarwal (9) was run out in a horrible mix-up with his captain KL Rahul (11) in the second over itself, while Prabhsimran Singh looked promising for a while but got out for 11. Rahul played second fiddle to his partners, looking to anchor the innings but he failed in doing that as he was out in the eighth over, hitting straight to the safe hands of Kane Williamson in the deep. Glenn Maxwell’s struggle continued as he was run out for seven, courtesy a brilliant direct throw from Priyam Garg. Earlier, KXIP bowlers did not have a clue how to break the partnership of Bairstow and Warner till the 15th over. At that stage, SRH were 160 for no loss. Bishnoi then removed both Bairstow and Warner
in the space of three balls in the 16th over before Arshdeep Singh (2/33) dismissed Manish Pandey for 1 in the next over to trigger a brilliant turnaround. Williamson remained not out on 20 off 10 balls. Bairstow was dropped on 19 in the fifth over by KXIP skipper Rahul off the bowling of Mohammed Shami and he made them pay for the mistake. He was clearly the dominant partner of the opening duo, reaching his third fifty of the season in 28 balls in the 10th over at the end of which SRH were 100 for no loss. Warner reached his third fifty of the tournament in the 14th over but got out in the first ball of the 16th over when he miscued a slog sweep to Glenn Maxwell at long-on off Bishnoi. Three balls later, Bairstow departed after Rahul opted to review the field umpire’s decision and the third umpire ruled the England wicketkeeper batsman out LBW.

SAI to turn best training facilities into TOPS centres of excellence NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): Eyeing the 2024 and 2028 Olympics, the Sports Authority of India is set to turn some of the country’s best training facilities into Target Olympic Podium Scheme National Centres of Excellence (TOPS NCOE). The decision was taken at SAI’s 53rd General Body Meeting chaired by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday. The move will provide additional impetus to the preparation for 2024 and 2028 Summer Games. The centres will be operated in collaboration with National Sports Federations (NSFs). “The government is committed to provide a sports ecosystem of global standards for athletes. These TOPS NCEOs will have state-of-art infrastructure, best-in-class coaches and support staff as well as modern sports science support,” Rijiju said in a statement.

The move is in line with the plan to identify young sporting talent that can be groomed for 2024 and 2028 Olympics. Various other decisions were also taken during the meeting, including the creation of new sports infrastructure projects and upgradation of existing infrastructure projects at National Centre of Excellence to the tune of Rs 120 crore. Mumbai police bust multi crore ‘TRP racket’ Republic TV, 2 Marathi channels under probe MUMBAI, OCT 8 (PTI/ AGENCIES): Mumbai police on Thursday claimed to have busted a Television Rating Points (TRP) manipulation racket, adding four persons have been arrested in this case. TRP is a tool to judge which TV programmes are viewed the most and also indicates the viewers’ choice and popularity of a particular channel. Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh told reporters that Republic TV channel, facing flak over its attack on Mumbai police and Maharashtra government in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case, was also involved in the “false TRP” racket. Mumbai police crime branch, which unearthed the TRP racket, has arrested two persons, owners of two Marathi channels, for manipulating viewership ratings, Singh said. Another police official said two former employees

Ram Vilas Paswan
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan, a prominent Dalit leaders of the country, died on Thursday at the age of 74, his son Chirag Paswan said. The Lok Janshakti Party founder and Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution was admitted to a private hospital here for several weeks and had recently undergone a heart operation. Ram Vilas Paswan was instrumental in the implementation of the Mandal Commission report in the 1990s. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and scores of leaders mourned the demise of Paswan.
1 held for ‘Fake News’
DIMAPUR, OCT 8 (NPN): Dimapur police Thursday reportedly detained a person identified as one Wangam Konyak for mischievously creating and circulating fake information regarding an alleged sexual assault near Dimapur Rail Station.

of Hansa agency, involved in the process to determine TRPs, have also been arrested. Singh said Republic TV channel is also involved in the TRP racket and those responsible will be arrested, be it a director, promoter or any other employee of the channel. Singh said bank accounts of these channels are also being probed and people responsible for the TRP racket are being summoned by police for further investigation. “Based on these TRP ratings, advertisers pay to advertise on these channels and it is a game of thousands of crore,” Singh said. Manipulated TRP ratings result in miscalculated targeted audience for the ad-
vertisers, he said, adding this results in losses of hundreds of crores of rupees because of such manipulations and fake statistics of TRPs. TRP is calculated on the basis of TV channel viewership in a confidential set of households. Singh said those involved in the racket would bribe people in these households and ask them to keep some channels switched on even when they weren’t watching or not at home. Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) releases weekly rating points for TV channels in India and its officials are also being questioned in connection with the case, he said. There are 2,000 barometers installed in Mumbai to
monitor TRPs, he said, adding BARC gave contract to Hansa agency for monitoring these barometers. The two channel owners arrested were produced in court and Mumbai police have got their custody till Friday, he said. The arrests were made under sections 409 and 420 of IPC, he added. “We suspect that if this was happening in Mumbai then it could be happening in other parts of the country as well,” he added. BARC is an industry body set up to design, commission, supervise and own an accurate, reliable and timely TV audience measurement system and is guided by recommendations of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India and Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. It helps provide data points to plan media spends more effectively. Hansa filed a complaint of the TRP racket, following which an offence was registered, he said. “During the investigation it came to light that some former employees of the agency were involved in compromising the data and they were sharing it with
some television companies,” he said. It was revealed that these persons had manipulated the sampling metering services by inducing the barometer users through periodical payments to watch particular TV channels, he said. Many people in whose homes these barometers have been installed, have accepted that they were getting monetary benefit for keeping their TV sets on even when they did not watch it, he said.
Republic TV refutes
Republic TV, in a statement, rubbished Singh’s claims. Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of the channel, said the Mumbai police chief made false claims against Republic TV as the channel had questioned him in the Sushant Singh Rajput case investigation. Goswami said the channel will file a criminal defamation case against the Mumbai police commissioner. BARC has not mentioned the channel even in a single complaint, he said, adding Singh should issue an apology and get ready to face the channel in court.

World Bank estimates India’s GDP to plunge 9.6% in FY-21 Washington, Oct 8 (PTI): World Bank on Thursday said that India’s gross domestic product (GDP) is expected to contract by 9.6% this fiscal, highlighting the impact of the national lockdown and the income shock experienced by households and firms due to the COVID19 pandemic. India’s GDP is expected to contract by 9.6% in the fiscal year 2020-21 (FY21), the World Bank said in its report titled ‘South Asia Economic Focus’, noting that the country’s economic situation is much worse than ever seen before. The World Bank earlier in June had estimated the Indian economy to shrink by 3.2% in the current fiscal. The report also forecasted a sharper than expected economic slump across the South Asian region, with regional growth expected to contract by 7.7% in 2020, after topping 6% annually in the past five years. Regional growth is projected to rebound to 4.5% in 2021, it said. Factoring in population growth, however, income per capita in the region will remain 6% below
2019 estimates, indicating that the expected rebound will not offset the lasting economic damage caused by the pandemic, it said. “The situation is much worse in India than we have ever seen before”, Hans Timmer, World Bank chief economist for South Asia told reporters during a conference call. “It is an exceptional situation in India, a very dire outlook”, he said. India’s GDP declined 25% in the first quarter (April-June quarter) of the current fiscal year – the deepest economic contraction for the country in at least four decades. In the report, the World Bank said that the spread of the coronavirus and containment measures have severely disrupted supply and demand conditions in India. With the intent to contain the spread of COVID19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with effect from March 25, 2020, announced a nationwide complete lockdown that brought as much as 70% of economic activity, investment, exports and discretionary consumption to a standstill. Only essential
goods and services such as agriculture, mining, utility services, some financial and IT services and public services were allowed to operate. Dubbed as the world’s most stringent lockdown, the government shut a majority of the factories and businesses, suspended flights, stopped trains and restricted movement of vehicles and people. According to the World Bank, monetary policy has been deployed aggressively and fiscal resources have been channelled to public health and social protection, but additional counter-cyclical measures will be needed, within a revised mediumterm fiscal framework. Despite measures to shield vulnerable households and firms, the trajectory of poverty reduction has slowed, if not reversed, it said. Responding to another question, Timmer said that as a result of COVID-19, the World Bank estimates that in one year, the number of people living below the poverty line has increased by 33%.
Stakeholders meeting Nagaland ranks amongst the lowest Nagaland COVID tally 6736 little too late, says WSH in NSE’s State of States Index COVID-19 STATUS AS ON october 8, 2020
DIMAPUR, OCT 8 (NPN): Wester n Sumi Hoho (WSH) has described as “little too late” the consultative meeting of all stakeholders convened by the state government to discuss the Naga political issue and the ongoing peace talks between the Naga political groups and the Government of India. WSH through its media cell questioned what was the point of calling a meeting of all stakeholders now i negotiations between the various Naga political groups and the government of India has been finalised and the draft agreement ready to be signed. The hoho stated that the meeting should have been called long back “when the time was crucial and all core issues were needed to thoroughly deliberated.”
WSH stated that calling a consultative meeting now at this moment “when the already agreed position seems more of a political gimmick and an act to only impress the central leadership rather than a genuine exercise to grasp the pulse of the people.” According to WSH, there should have been a proper roadmap with some concrete solution taking on board all civil society groups, mass-based organisations and churches when it was much needed. It stated that there was no logic in the proposed call now as the 14 tribes and others have all made their stand loud and clear. As leaders, Western Sumi Hoho said it was expected of the state legislature to have also come up clearly with their concrete stand boldly.
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (AGENCIES): Nagaland has performed extremely poor with lowest financial inclusion, poor state in agriculture, fiscal health and human development indicators in the recently concluded National Stock Exchange (NSE)’s State of States Index (SSI). Manipur performed poorly in agricultural sector, financial inclusion as well as on fiscal health, Assam ranked lowest in infrastructure development and its performance was poor in agriculture and human development. SSI is based on multiple dimensions of fiscal health, state of agriculture, development of non-agricultural sectors, infrastructure, human development and financial inclusion. Delhi bagged top position in SSI. The union territory performed significantly
well across all dimensions except human development indicators, as per NSE report. SSI, that seeks to measure the performance of a state on multiple indicators, calculated the overall performance of Indian states across multiple dimensions and ranked them through a performance score. Goa and Haryana performed well in economic development and financial inclusion. Among others, Kerala and Tamil Nadu performed remarkably well in economic and human development indicators, even as they were laggards in fiscal health, infrastructure and financial inclusion. Besides, Punjab scored well on the back of agriculture and relatively high human development score. Maharashtra performed well in fiscal health, non-farm sectors and finan-
Former Nagaland Gov Ashwani Kumar cremated SHIMLA, OCT 8 (PTI): Former Governor of Nagaland Ashwani Kumar was cremated in the presence of his family, friends and senior Himachal Pradesh officials and politicians here on Thursday, a day after he was found hanging at his home. The 69-year-old, who also served as CBI director, left behind a note saying he was “embarking on a new journey”, officials said. The pyre was lit by his son Abhishek. Senior state politicians, including Power Minister Sukh Ram Chaudhary and Leader of Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri, and DGP Sanjay Kundu were among those present on the occasion. In Delhi, the CBI held a condolence meeting for Kumar. The 1973-batch IPS officer is survived by his wife and son. On Thursday, after the mandatory medical

examination of the body, authorities at a city hospital preserved a viscera sample for a final medical report and then handed his mortal remains to the family for the last rites, officials said. A preliminary probe indicates that a sudden change in his active life over the last six months – India went into lockdown in March to curb the spread of COVID-19 -could be a probable reason behind the drastic move but police are looking into all probabilities, they said.
“We recovered a suicide note in which he had written he is embarking on a new journey. His family members were present when he went inside the room, locked it and committed suicide by hanging himself with a nylon rope. The family does not suspect any foul play. We have seized the items in the room,” DGP Kundu told PTI on Wednesday night. A few hours earlier, on Wednesday evening, Kumar was found hanging at his residence in Brockhurst near Chhota Shimla. DGP was personally monitoring the case along with Shimla Superintendent of Police (SP) Mohit Chawla and other senior police officials, including the forensic team. Former colleagues and present officers of the agency remembered Kumar as a soft-spoken gentleman with a ready smile.
Gov Ravi mourns Ashwani’s death
Nagaland Governor RN Ravi expressed shock and deep grief over the tragic passing away of Dr. Ashwani Kumar, former Governor of Nagaland. IMPHAL, OCT 8: A move of Manipur government to appease a group of agitating people over the National Sports University (NSU) site triggered widespread violent agitations in parts of Imphal West district. In a talk to end the five-day total bandh on the national highways passing through Kangpokpi district, the state government on Wednesday agreed with Kangpokpi based CSOs that the NSU site lies within the jurisdiction of Kangpokpi district. The agreement irked the residents of villages under Imphal West district who claim they donated the land for setting up the NSU campus site which then triggered Thursday’s widespread violent protests in Imphal west district. A top police officer and several protesters sustained injuries as agitations turned violent, compelling state authority to impose curfew in and around the disputed NSU campus. Imphal West district SP

According to Sentinel Assam, the viral picture was clicked in the remote Liyai Chilao Village in the Senapati district of Manipur. Liyai Khunou (Chilao) is a Poumai Naga Village in the hills district of Senapati, Manipur bordering Nagaland’s Phek District. A peaceful and beautiful village, Zhaimai village (officially known as Liyai) is considered the biggest village amongst the Poumai Naga villages of Manipur. Hek also informed that he has sought an appointment with the Home Minister to submit a letter seeking his intervention to invite the HNLC to the negotiating table to ensure lasting peace in the State. Hek said that the State unit of the BJP was ready to act as facilitator for the HNLC or any other organisation if they wanted to have peace talks with the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Earlier, Meghalaya BJP state president Ernest Mawrie had said the party would help the HNLC leaders if they were willing to meet Union home minister Amit Shah. Mawrie had also said the party wanted the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which the BJP is one of the alliance partners, to invite the militant outfit for talks.

Many social media users hailed the organic farming practices in the Northeast Indian region. Reacting to the picture, Ramesh Nambiar, a Facebook user, wrote, “I think a Northeast Ministry for organic vegetables/fruits/ bamboo etc has to be set up and marketed professionally to the international market. K Meghachandra sustained injuries on his left ear after a stone was pelted on him and was rushed to Raj Medicity hospital, Imphal for medical treatment. Several protesters also sustained injuries in the clashes at several villages. Among them one sustained serious injury as police beat him up, reports alleged. The question of whether the NSU site lies in Imphal West district or Kangpokpi district has been a bone of contention among villages at the inter-district border since the very beginning. A five-day total bandh was imposed on the national highways against forced demarcation of the land last Saturday. The bandh was due to end by October 10. However, it was suspended after the state government agreed that the land lies within Kangpokpi district. Hundreds of villagers near the NSU site on Thursday agitated against the agreement by blocking roads in their respective villages and complaining to the local MLAs of Lamshang and Sekmai Assembly conRegd. The Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in a bitter border row for the past five months in eastern Ladakh and the IAF has made significant deployment in the region. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh greeted the IAF on its foundation day, and said the government is committed to enhance its combat capability of the force. “The nation is proud of its men and women in blue and salutes the prowess of the IAF as it stands ready to face challenges and deter adversaries. We remain committed to enhancement of IAF’s combat capability through modernisation and indigenisation,” he said. In his address, the Chief of Air Staff also cautioned of the evolving “threat matrix” in the region, and said it mandates a greater need to have a strong air force to fight across domains and the entire spectrum of warfare. “The evolving threat matrix in our region is becoming complex, ranging from aspirational adversaries with huge investments in military arsenal, to those collusively supported by nonstate actors, apart from growing sub-conventional threats emanating from terrorism and cyber space,” he said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): An advanced light helicopter of the Indian Air Force on Thursday made a precautionary landing in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh after it developed a technical snag, officials said. A spokesperson of the IAF said the helicopter landed safely following prompt and swift emergency action by the air crew. “An advanced light helicopter of Indian Air Force was airborne from Air Force station Sarsawa on a routine training mission. Approximately 30 nautical mile out of Sarsawa, the helicopter developed a technical snag and carried out precautionary landing South of the airfield,” he said. NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday appealed to everyone to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public movement against COVID-19 and said a global pandemic can be fought only when all the countrymen come together. Shah also said there are only three mantras to protect ourselves from the coronavirus -- wearing a mask, practising two meters of social distancing and washing hands frequently -- as suggested by the prime minister. “A global pandemic like COVID-19 can be fought only when all the countrymen come together. Let us all unite to fight against it by joining this mass movement started by PM Modi and play an important role in making India COVID-19 free by making everyone aware of this pandemic,” he said in
Bhadauria said disruptive technologies and easy access to low cost options like drones are increasingly demanding greater attention to the sub-conventional domain. NEW DELHI/ HATHRAS, OCT 8 (PTI): Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday accused the BJP of building a narrative to defame the Hathras victim, saying she deserves justice and not slander. She charged that a narrative is being built by the ruling party in Uttar Pradesh for holding the woman responsible for crimes committed against her. “Creating a narrative that defames a woman’s character and holding her somehow responsible for crimes committed against her is revolting and regressive,” she said on Twitter. “A heinous crime has been committed at Hathras, leaving a 20-year-old Dalit woman dead. Her body has been burned without the participation or consent of her family. She deserves justice not slander,” Gandhi also said. The Congress general secretary for Uttar Pradesh also used a hashtag, accusing the BJP of being
full support towards the government’s self-reliance initiative, and said the force is rapidly shifting to indigenous equipment and platforms. He also mentioned induction of a large number of indigenously developed platforms like Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Netra airborne early warning and control system, Akash surface-to-air missile systems and BrahMos missiles. The Chief of Air Staff also mentioned the introduction of an electronic maintenance management system in the IAF for all its flying platforms and combat assets. “This is virtually the world’s largest such maintenance monitoring system, across various types of platforms and the numbers,” he added. On future requirements, he highlighted efforts to develop an indigenous combat system with sixth generation technologies, and mentioned plans to develop directed energy weapons, optionally manned combat platforms, swarm drones and hypersonic weapons. “The space domain is likely to become increasingly important in future years, and is being given the required thrust. I want all air warriors to understand the importance of the decade ahead, and work proactively towards making Indian Air Force the engine of growth of our indegenous aerospace industry,” he said.
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): The Union government on Thursday launched a public awareness drive as part of its fight against COVID-19, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministerial colleagues asking people to follow precautions like wearing masks and maintaining social distancing to defeat the coronavirus pandemic. The start of a ‘jan andolan’ (mass movement) campaign comes in view of upcoming festivals, winter season and opening up of the economy, as a lack of adherence to recommended precautions can increase cases of the infection. Modi said India’s coronavirus fight is people-driven and gets great strength from its COVID warriors. He also urged the masses to unite to fight the virus. Home Minister Amit Shah said a global pandemic like COVID-19 can be fought only when all countrymen come together. Rahul Gandhi attacks PM Modi India says Pak must address Right to freedom of speech most over VVIP aircraft acquisition core issues in Kulbhushan case abused these days: SC observes
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi again attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday over the acquisition of VVIP aircraft and wondered how many things could have been bought for the soldiers stationed in Siachen-Ladakh border in the amount spent. During his campaign in Punjab against the farm reform laws, the Congress leader on Tuesday had accused the prime minister of “wasting” thousands of crores of rupees on the aircraft. Tagging a media report which claimed that the Public Accounts Committee has asked for permission from the Lok Sabha Speaker to go to Ladakh over delay in procuring clothing and equipment for jawans stationed at the Siachen, Ladakh border, Gandhi renewed his attack on the prime minister over the aircraft acquisition. “PM bought a plane worth Rs 8,400 crore for himself. In this amount,
Rahul Gandhi how many things could be purchased for our soldiers posted on the Siachen-Ladakh border. Warm clothes: 30,00,000. Jacket, gloves: 60,00,000. Shoes: 67,20,000 Oxygen cylinder: 16,80,000,” he said in a tweet in Hindi. Gandhi alleged that the PM is “only concerned about his image and not soldiers”. When he was asked about the BJP’s criticism of him for using a cushion to sit in a tractor, Gandhi had said in Punjab that the prime
minister’s ‘Air India One’ did not just have a cushion but a whole lot of luxury beds for his comfort. Government sources had said that the process for procuring two VVIP aircraft had begun under the UPA government, and the current dispensation has only brought it to a logical conclusion. They noted that the exercise had begun in 2011 and an Inter-Ministerial Group submitted its recommendations in 2012 after meeting for 10 times.
NEW DELHI: India on Thursday said Pakistan has failed to address the core issues in the case relating to Indian death row convict Kulbhushan Jadhav and pressed for an “unimpeded, unconditional and unhindered” consular access to him as ordered by an international tribunal. A Pakistani court is in the process of hearing a review petition against his death sentence. India has been pressing for appointment of an Indian lawyer to represent Jadhav in the case besides seeking unhindered consular access to him as ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in a verdict in 2019. “Pakistan has failed to respond on core issues pertaining to this case and the core issues are provision of all documents relating to the case and providing unimpeded, unconditional and unhindered consular access to him,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava
said at a media briefing. He was asked about Pakistani authorities informing the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday that India failed to appoint a lawyer to represent Jadhav in the case. “The core issues need to be addressed if we have to have effective review and reconsideration as ordered by the international court of justice. Pakistan must show its intention to deliver on the core issues,” Srivastava said. Fifty-year-old retired Indian Navy officer Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism in April 2017. Weeks later, India approached the ICJ against Pakistan for denial of consular access to him and challenging the death sentence. The Hague-based ICJ ruled in July 2019 that Pakistan must undertake an “effective review and reconsideration” of the conviction and sentence of Jadhav and also to grant consular access to India without further delay.
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (IANS): The Supreme Court on Thursday pulled up the Centre for filing an affidavit short on details in a plea seeking strong action against media houses for demonizing the Muslim community in connection with the Tablighi Jamaat event. The top court highlighted the abuse of freedom of speech during the hearing. A bench comprising Chief Justice S.A. Bobde, Justice A.S. Bopanna and Justice V. Ramasubramanian told the Solicitor General Tushar Mehta: “You cannot treat the court the way you are treating it in this case.” The bench cited that the Centre’s affidavit has been filed by a junior officer, and it is also extremely evasive and does not provide details on the aspect of bad reporting during the Tablighi Jamaat event. The bench asked “How can you say there was no incident (of bad reporting)?” Senior advocate Du-
Supreme Court of India shyant Dave, appearing for the petitioners, contended before the bench that Centre’s response seems, the petitioner is citing bad reporting, as an attempt to muzzle the freedom of speech. The Chief Justice replied, the Centre is entitled to make an argument, but “this freedom of speech may be the most abused freedom in recent times”. The Chief Justice insisted the secretary of the department concerned must file an affidavit pointing out the observation in connection with reporting on the incident. The bench also
asked for information on Acts, which have exercised similar powers in the past, and had a brief discussion on the implication of the Cable Television Networks Act. Mehta submitted that a fresh affidavit will be filed on the next hearing. The bench said it wants to know, does the government have any powers to ban or question the TV broadcast and insisted the Centre should file an affidavit detailing steps it had taken to stop broadcasts in TV channels which targeted a single community.

Milking or making budget
I
t is quite certain that Nagaland could land itself in a precarious financial situation by the end of the current financial year when the deficit is projected at Rs.2358.81 crore. The state government has been fighting a losing battle to keep its fluttering financial flag flying by attempting to cut cost or in other words borrowing form Peter to pay Paul. Had the government slowed down on the chase for DPRs in order to get money for projects, perhaps the state could have afforded some for its share of central projects. However, deficits are politically blind since whichever political party is in power, the problem of managing the state finance remains a daunting challenge. The current problem was not entirely unforeseen and the best option would have been to drastically cut unnecessary expenditure. However, such a measure is unthinkable and even politically unsound since our leaders and their people are not used to fiscal responsibility. This is because the common concept is that the government is the milking cow and so must give milk but no one wants to feed the cow. The biggest consumer of the budget are over one lakh employees (some 1.40 lakh according to some sources). Hundreds of employees in a department hardly do anything and most are not found in the designated place of work. There is a strange system where public are made to suffer due to a kind of practice where either one of the officers or clerks don’t show up as if on rotation. While paper work takes hardly two or three days in a private organization, the same work would takes at least a month in government offices. Therefore, someone who is inefficient is incompetent for the job and which also means that the person is unproductive and is a waste of investment. Inefficiency has become a terrible syndrome within the government and no one cares nor has the courage to make inefficient workers accountable. The pay, perks and other facilities spent on government employees and the fact that there too many of them wasting precious resources by doing nothing is a crime. In the recent pandemic, it was not the thousands of government employees(except police, medical, district authorities and NSDMC) who made their presence felt. The common people, the churches, NGOs were at the forefront. Providing efficient service, today assumes importance in the global context as it is an indication of the ability and reliability of the system to promote true progress when so much has been made available within the frame of the system. With scores of suitedbooted officers in as many departments including the babus and babunis, the state machinery appears to have overgrown to gigantic, inefficient and wasteful proportion. If any government wants to promote progress, it must first start by toning up the system in other words enforce accountability, so that it provides efficient service to the people. Efficiency also means completing projects within the stipulated time and not rushing to submit DPRs without proper assessment of viabilities otherwise they become liabilities.
DailyDevotion Coming to Jesus Come to Me… —Matthew 11:28 Isn’t it humiliating to be told that we must come to Jesus! Think of the things about which we will not come to Jesus Christ. If you want to know how real you are, test yourself by these words— “Come to Me….” In every dimension in which you are not real, you will argue or evade the issue altogether rather than come; you will go through sorrow rather than come; and you will do anything rather than come the last lap of the race of seemingly unspeakable foolishness and say, “Just as I am, I come.” As long as you have even the least bit of spiritual disrespect, it will always reveal itself in the fact that you are expecting God to tell you to do something very big, and yet all He is telling you to do is to “Come….” “Come to Me….” When you hear those words, you will know that something must happen in you before you can come. The Holy Spirit will show you what you have to do, and it will involve anything that will uproot whatever is preventing you from getting through to Jesus. And you will never get any further until you are willing to do that very thing. The Holy Spirit will search out that one immovable stronghold within you, but He cannot budge it unless you are willing to let Him do so. How often have you come to God with your requests and gone away thinking, “I’ve really received what I wanted this time!” And yet you go away with nothing, while all the time God has stood with His hands outstretched not only to take you but also for you to take Him. Just think of the invincible, unconquerable, and untiring patience of Jesus, who lovingly says, “Come to Me….”

Post-mortem
Poor roads in Nagaland leading to health, economic & safety hazards
O
nce, the famous US President, John F. Kennedy remarked, “American roads are not good because America is rich, but America is rich because American roads are good.” This remark finds due precedence in the present context of Nagaland whereby, due to incessant corruption, the condition of roads have been in disarray for many years down the line. According to the Road Statistics of 2013, out of the total road length of 14377.30 Kms, 12108.00 Kms of Road comes under the purview of Nagaland PWD (R&B). This proves that a major responsibility lies on the Nagaland PWD for the construction and maintenance of the roads in Nagaland. However, in reality much of the statistics of road development have sadly remained only on the papers. The Four Lane Road project connecting Dimapur with the State Capital, Kohima is taking ages for its completion though the foundation stone was laid by Union Minister for Road Transport & National Highways way back in 2015. The project was commissioned to the NHIDCL and was proposed to be completed within 3 years. But, it is utterly lamentable that despite several assurances by both the Central as well as the State Government, the four-lane project seems never ending. Has corruption and poor workmanship resulted in the snail-paced progress of this crucial road infrastructure? The conditions of the other
“The State of Nagaland was created on 1st December 1963 as a Political settlement under the 16th Point Agreement as the 16th State of the Indian Union for the 16th Tribes of Nagaland”. The recent statements, analogy and assumptions that the state of Nagaland has only certain number of recognized Tribes and Stakeholders has come at the cost of hurting the sentiment and distorting of our rich historical background and of the existence of various tribes recognized by the Government of India as per the Constitution of India. The existence of such Tribe Indigeniuous to its Land and history and as old as the existence of the concept of our Naga Nations and its movements is the “KUKI ” Tribe of Nagaland. Kuki’s are also a Stakeholder within our state of Nagaland irrespective of how minor or lesser populations we may be, as we were a Stakeholder as history has shown in our struggle for self-determination. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has settled and living within the Naga Hills and state of Nagaland after its attainment of statehood. The existence of Kuki are documented and historically noted even during the time of John Butler, who took a census of the Kuki’s of Naga Hills in 1872 and also drew a map, where there were 25 Kuki villages, with a population of 2599 people in 21 villages (4 villages not accounted for). The Census of India 1901, also shows that there were about 26 Kuki villages with 128 persons per village approximately which brings the Kuki population in the Naga Hills to 3328. The beginning of the 20th century saw the emergence of Naga Nationalism which led to the formation of Naga Club in 1918. The real birth of the Naga ‘Nation’ was ushered by the formation of the Naga Club. On 10th Januar y, 1929, the Naga Club submitted a memorandumSIMON COMMISSIONwhich sought that the Naga Hills be left out within the reformed scheme of
categories of roads within the state are also utterly neglected since the last many years without any signs of either new constructions or repair. All the money sanctioned by the Centre and the taxes collected by the State seems to vanish into thin air each year. It is only before the Elections that the Government puts on some cosmetic black tar over the roads and cover the potholes of their corruptions just to pacify the public and to garner some easy votes from the gullible voters. The condition of roads in almost all the districts have been lying neglected for years with no respite for commuters who have to survive the untold misery of bone wrenching and stomach churning journeys. The corrupt leaders travelling in the comforts of their high-end and luxurious SUVs would never understand the plight and miseries of the common people. It seems that the conscience of these so called VVIPs have also vanished in thin air like the roads. In fact it is quite embarrassing and utterly shameful that the journey from Dimapur to Guwahati takes lesser time despite the length being couple of hundred kilometers more compared to a journey from Dimapur to other Districts of Nagaland. It is also utterly laughable that the State Government is pressing on the need for an airport in the State Capital when the soil is not stable and the roads are deplorable. Can the total lack of development and maintenance of roads in Nagaland be attrib-
uted to cronyism and nepotism whereby crucial road contracts are given to favourable contractors? Does the government or concerned department check the credibility of such contractors and whether they are efficient and professionals? There is even a joke doing the rounds that in Nagaland sometimes even bus conductors become 1st class contractors! A major chunk of the funds allocated for construction and development of roads in Nagaland end up on the platters of these corrupt leaders, the remaining amount passes down the hierarchy of corruption to other officials. Only a small percentage allocated trickles down for the actual development of the roads. Therefore, this vicious cycle of corruption will continue unless and until appropriate anti-graft measures are not taken and the NGOs, Civic Bodies, Students’ Unions, Tribal Hohos, Local Bodies and the General Public raise their voices against the same as good roads are a basic right & amenity of every citizen. So, why are the common public not voicing their concerns and remaining mute spectators to all such corrupt practices? Even the judiciary including legal experts and consumer right forums, etc. must be proactive in creating awareness and taking legal actions while at the same time standing up against such corrupt practices as they are more equipped and well versed in the law and legalities than the laymen. NPP Nagaland has also
observed that there are no proper measures taken towards the Road Safety. Making a journey during the night, on rainy and foggy days is quite a challenging experience as there are no proper Sign Boards for alerting the drivers especially on the numerous bends, curves and diversions. Also, it is quite normal that random landslides take place in Nagaland for which the State Government should be prudent enough to station Emergency Services with proper equipments including Recovery Vans and Excavators at all such stretches round the clock throughout the state. If the Government is not in a position to maintain the condition of the roads, it should at least ensure proper safety measures by putting up effective safety devices including reflectors and signboards, safety barriers, parapet/guide walls, proper drainage, proper manning of hazardous zones and deputing quick response teams on every vulnerable stretch of roads and accident prone areas. This will ensure low accident rates thus saving precious lives as this is one of the main reasons why many lives have been affected due to accidents taking place. NPP Nagaland is particularly concerned about the senior citizens, pregnant women and ailing patients who have to bear the major brunt of the ineffective, unsafe, underdeveloped and deplorable roads. It is to be noted that the road condition throughout the year is not favourable both during the monsoons as
Kuki: The forgotton tribe of Nagaland
India but be directly under the British government, Naga Hills district was declared as ‘Excluded Area’ in the Government of India Act.1935. Among the signatories from the six tribes, Lengjang Kuki (Head Dobashi) was one. It was not by accident that Lengjang Kuki signed for a Naga political document. He was citizen of Naga Hills, a Naga in the generic sense, a name which loosely connected the diverse Naga tribes. The Simon Commission which is the ‘Bed Rock’ on which Naga politics stands and has been our magna carta in formation of our struggle for identity, sovergnity and foundation for all other negotiations in the days to come of our Unique history and kindling our self determination to be a free Nation. Kuki’s during the NNC Era: Lengjang’s contribution to the Naga Club and his legacy was continued by the Kuki’s of Naga Hills with the feelings of being a Naga Politically sharing the dreams and aspiration like their other Naga bothers of different Tribes. Paochung Kuki, Dr. Lenjalal Kuki, Onpao Kuki, Jangkhusei Kuki, Subedar Khupjalet Kuki etc continued where Lengjang left. Two leading Kuki social and intellectual stalwarts of the time- Seikhohen Kuki and Jangkhosei Kuki- were elected as members of the Kuki Tribal Council under NNC. Sir Akbar Hydari, the then Governor of Assam visited Kohima in 1947. He had long discussions with the NNC and the following tribes were present: Western Angami, Eastern Angami, Kuki, Kacha Nagas, Rengmas, Semas, Lothas, Aos, Sangtams and Changs. The result was the ‘Nine Point Agreement’ between the governor and the NNC. Seikhohen Kuki was a member of the first Naga delegation to meet Jawaharlal Nehru for Naga independence and was one of the founding members of NNC. When NNC was first formed, every Naga citizen was supposed to
directly contribute towards it but only seven tribes namely Ao, Sema, Eastern Angami (Chakhesang), Angamis, Lotha, Rengma and Zeliang-Kuki contributed to it. During the Naga Plebiscite on 16 May 1951, the Kuki leaders of the time like Onpao Kuki (President, Kuki Union), Paochung Kuki (Chief of Khaibung), Dr Lenzalal Kuki (Chief of Bungsang, father of late Seikhohen Kuki) and Subedar Khupjalet Kuki pressed their finger and took the lead amongst the Kuki people and mobilized its people within Nagaland in favor of Naga independence. The Kuki’s were part of the Federal Army in the NNC initiated by stalwarts like Vomkhothang, president of KUC and Hemjangul, secretary of KUC, and Simson Haolai. The initial Kuki leaders in Naga Federal Army were Kailet Singson, Henkho Haolai, Paokhoseh Chongloi, Tonglen Singson, Haokhoseh Kholhou, Haokholet Kholhou, Padal Kuki, Jacob Doungel etc. Under the Federal Government, Semas, Kukis and Rengmas were under one district under the Patkai state of ‘Nagaland’ and called it SE-KU-RENG taking the first syllable of the name of each tribe. When the Naga People’s Convention (NPC) was convened and started having parleys with the Government of India for settlement, Jangkhusei Kuki became a member of the Drafting member to prepare a draft for the Naga Political Settlement. The NPC had asked the Zeliangs and Kukis to be represented as ZeliangKuki Tribal Council in the NPC. Finally, when the 16 Point Agreement was signed between NPC and Government of India, Thinuowholie Leigiese signed as a representative of Zeliang-Kuki. Lutjakai Kuki went on to become the Kuki member in the Interim Body. Kuki’s after Nagaland Statehood: The declaration of full statehood for Nagaland on 1st December,
1963 led to the dissolution of the Interim Body and fresh elections were held for the 45 member State Legislative Assembly. The Nagaland State Legislative Assembly of 1964 included two Kuki Member -Langkam Kuki representing Ghaspani and Lalkholam Kuki representing Tenning. In the 1982 Assembly election, Henlun Singson won from Tening Constituency and was the sitting MLA/Minister till 1989. Henlun Singson was also inducted into the Council of Ministers with the status of Minister of State (Independent ChargeForest Department) but ever since then after the pogrom and mass killing and uprooting of the Kuki’s from their Villages and land we could not marshal our tribe into organized entity. Kuki’s during the NSCN Era: In the early 1990s, a POGROM was launched against the Indigeniuous Kuki’s of Nagaland where hundreds of innocent Children’s, women and people were massacred all over Nagaland along with burning and uprooting of several villages and its people. Altogether 15 Kuki villages were either fully burned or temporarily Vacated, Worse than that was the large scale migration of Kukis from Nagaland to neighboring states, scampering for survival since NO ONE or TRIBE(s) came to our rescue in time of our dire needs, we were left totally isolated and abandon by our fellow tribesmen from Nagaland due to fear of death and destructions that has fallen upon us. Till the early 1990’s, a considerable number of Kuki’s were still there in the Federal Army/NNC. On 12th August 199212 NNC cadres were killed in Chalkot Village. Kuki’s were still supporters of NNC then but this incident shook their beliefs and security when the NNC could not protect themselves and the people who supported the organization, the Kuki’s of Nagaland decided to join the NSCN-K lead by stalwart like the present
well as the dry months which poses health hazard and very early and pre-mature damage of vehicles which is a common occurrence in Nagaland for which the people are totally mute and complacent resulting in huge economic losses. When we compare our roads to those of other states, we find that our roads don’t even last one season. The Government should therefore take up effective measures to hold the concerned people including the officials and Contractors accountable and responsible for any road development projects. In this regard, it would be more effective on the part of the contractors to give a written assurance of durability on all road projects for a minimum period of 3 years. Better roads will also ensure faster movement of people and goods and thereby improve the economy of the state as a whole. We also request the State Government to revive the old and commendable practice of the BRO and BRTF whereby they used to put up quotations on the roadside to motivate the commuters and also the maintenance of the roads during the bygone days of the BRO & BRTF was highly efficient and commendable which should continue in days to come. As such, we once again call upon the State Government to look into this matter with due seriousness and respond in a positive and constructive manner. IPR & Media Cell, NPP Nagaland State
Advisor to Collective Leadership-GPRN/NSCNChungkhojang Singson (C.Singson), Luna Chongloi- Kilonser-GPRN/ NSCN, Col. Lenglam etc, In the NSCN(IM) it is lead by Paohao Kuki-Member Steering committee, Haolim Kuki-Executive Steering Member etc and many cadres from all over Nagaland, wearing the insignia of Naga Army proudly in their Uniforms and swearing by the principle of Naga Nation as we proudly did way back from the day of Simon Commission to the era of NNC. Till date there are more than hundreds of Cadres both in the Civil and Army set up in various factions of our Naga Political Group walking shoulder to shoulder with our other Naga brethrens in our quest for a final honorable and respectable solution. Conclusions: The Kuki’s of Nagaland from the time of Naga Hill, formation of Naga Club, submission of Memorandum to Simon Commission, being part of the NNC, part of the Historical Plebiscite, the Naga People Convention, Interim Government and became members of the first State Legislative Assembly and till date we the Kuki’s of Nagaland continued to be part of our Naga movement in various capacities whether it might be in Civil or in the Army. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has always considered ourselves as Politically Naga’s from the day of the forma-
tion of Naga Club and has Stood with our brothers and sisters through the Historical evolutions of our time in determination to achieve our freedom and sovereignty in whichever forms we –Naga’sbelieved. The recent development of alienations and sidelining of the Kuki’s in various platforms of discussions and consultations within the state of Nagaland by our brothers -read Tribes and not considering us-Kuki’s-as Non-Stakeholders, in the threshold of another historical landmark has found ourselves abandon and alienated in our own Land in Nagaland. The Kuki’s of Nagaland has been part of our Naga Movement right from the start GO whether it may be in the erstwhile NNC era or in the era of the NSCN lead movement. Kuki’s had always considered ourselves Physically, mentally and by deeds as Politically Naga’s, to undermine the contributions and participations of the Kuki’s of Nagaland is as good as undermining our Naga National movement itself-we were neither Johnny come lately or hunger for power and positions, we contributed as per our beliefs and convictions for an honorable and selfdetermined rules for our Naga people from the time of the formation of Naga Club till date. Sir,
Auto fares in Dimapur
Auto drivers refuse to ferry you if the normal fares don’t meet theirs which is higher than usual. There is no consistency and DDADU needs to check and prepare a uniform rate soon. The auto drivers share that life has become hard for them since the pandemic, but life has become hard for everyone and they must understand that we are all workers. Some demand exorbitant amount and now that the price of petrol has gone down, they make very silly excuses. We need strict measures for the fares. Amen Jamir, Aokong Ward, Dimapur

PM assures support to Afghanistan
levels of violence in Afghanistan figured in the meeting. Following the meeting, Abdullah tweeted that Modi assured him of India’s continued support for the peace process in Afghanistan. Abdullah arrived here on Tuesday on a five-day visit as part of the efforts to build a regional consensus and support for the Afghan peace process. “Pleased to meet HE Narendra Modi @narendramodi, the Prime Minister of Republic of #India. In our friendly discussion we took stock of the latest developments on the #AfghanPeaceProcess, the talks in Doha, & India’s support for the peace ef-
forts,” Abdullah said on Twitter. “HE PM assured me of India’s continued support for the peace process, & Afghanistan. I thanked him & the people of India for the invitation, & generous hospitality. I also thanked India for its principled position on the #AfghanPeaceProcess,” he said. The visit of the influential Afghan leader to India comes in the midst of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban in Doha. The Taliban and the Afghan government are holding direct talks to end 19 years of war that has killed tens of thousands of people and ravaged various
NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): Airlines may be permitted to operate maximum 75 per cent of their pre-COVID scheduled domestic flights if the passenger numbers continue to remain healthy during the next 7-10 days, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Thursday. The government on September 2 had said Indian airlines can operate up to 60 per cent of their preCOVID services within the country. On June 26, the Ministry of Civil Aviation had allowed the airlines to operate a maximum of 45 per cent of their pre-COVID domestic flights. The ministry had restarted domestic passenger services from May 25, after a gap of two months due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown. However, the airlines were allowed to operate not more than 33 per cent of their pre-COVID domestic flights at that time. “Our internal thinking is that we will watch it for another week or 10 days....If the figures (of passengers travelling) continue to be healthy, we would open domestic civil aviation to 75 per cent of the pre-COVID levels,” Puri said at a press conference on Thursday. Scheduled international passenger flights continue to remain suspended in the country since March 23 due to the pandemic.
BJP will defeat Mamata’s regime in Bengal lock, stock and barrel: Nadda NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (PTI): The people of West Bengal have made up their mind to throw Mamata Baner jee’s “tyrannical” government as there is no democracy left in the state, the BJP said on Thursday, hitting out at the TMC supremo over clashes between party workers and police during protests in Kolkata and Howrah. The clashes erupted at several places in the two West Bengal cities during a march called by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, to Nabanna, the state secretariat, when the protesters tore down barricades, officials said. Leading the party’s attack against the West Bengal chief minister, BJP president JP Nadda said he wants to clearly tell her again that the workers of the saffron party have resolved to fight against her “corrupt, violent and dictatorial” rule democratically to restore Bengal’s lost glory and pride. “The people of Bengal and the BJP will defeat her regime lock, stock and bar-
rel. The BJP’s struggle to save the rich glory of Bengal will continue,” Nadda said. In a series of tweets, he said the BJP stands with the people of Bengal, despite the brazen misuse of state power by Chief Minister Banerjee. “Our brave workers of BJP’s Yuva Morcha compelled her to close the Secretariat. This is an admission that she has lost public confidence,” Nadda said. E q u a t i n g t h e Tr i namool Congress (TMC) rule with the previous Left Front regime in West Bengal, he said the only thing Banerjee’s government has done better than its predecessor is increase brutality and violence against political opponents. “Bengal has been burning under her administration, which patronises violent elements,” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief said. Addressing a press conference at the party headquarters here, Union minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “There is no democracy in West Bengal. Those who protest
MHA allows political gathering in poll bound states before Oct 15 NEW DELHI, OCT 8 (IANS): In a modification to the reopening guidelines, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Thursday allowed political parties to hold rallies in 12 election bound states before October 15. The order came in the wake of the announcement by the Election Commission of India to hold state elections in Bihar and bypolls in 11 states for Assembly and Parliamentary constituencies that are scheduled on October 28, November 3 and November 7. In a notification, the MHA said that political gatherings can now take place before October 15 by keeping in mind open spaces. The guidelines for wearing masks and maintaining social distancing must be strictly followed.
“In exercise of powers conferred under Section 10 (2)(I) of the Disaster Management Act 2005, it is decided that the state governments concerned may permit political gatherings, outside the containment zones, beyond the existing limit of 100 persons on any date before October 15 in those Assembly or Parliamentary constituencies only, where elections are to be held,” the order said. The order also mentioned certain guidelines for closed and open spaces. A maximum of 50 per cent of the hall capacity will be allowed in closed spaces with a ceiling of 200 persons. Wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, provisions for thermal scanning and use of hand sanitisers will be mandatory.
against the government are implicated in cases or harassed by police or their life is under threat.” He condemned the “barbaric treatment” of BJP workers by the police in West Bengal. “I would like to tell Mamata Banerjee and her party that if they think they can stop the BJP’s progress in West Bengal by lathicharge and atrocities by the police, I assure them that they would fail in their attempts,” Prasad said. He asserted that Banerjee and the TMC are resorting to violence as they are losing political ground in West Bengal and said there is feedback from the ground that the BJP will form the next government in the state. “Is protest allowed in Mamata Banerjee’s reign? People who raise their voice against her party are killed. The only reason behind this is the TMC losing its political ground in the state,” Prasad said. He said 115 BJP workers have so far been killed in West Bengal.
Violent protests erupt in Kolkata, Howrah during BJP’s secretariat march
KOLKATA/HOWRAH, OCT 8 (PTI): Parts of Kolkata and adjoining Howrah resembled a battle zone on Thursday as BJP workers and supporters clashed with police, hurling stones and blocking roads with burning tyres, to protest a string of killings of saffron party workers. Clashes erupted at several places during the march called by Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP, to Nabanna, the state secretariat, when they tore down barricades, officials said. Police personnel in riot gear burst teargas shells, beat up agitators and used water cannons to break up the protests which are still raging in the two cities. Several BJP activists, including some senior leaders, were injured. It was still not known whether police personnel were also injured. Thick plumes of smoke from discarded tyres that the protesters set on fire to block traffic blackened the sky and streets were littered with stones. Shops and other business establishments hurriedly downed their shutters during the skirmishes. Thousands of sloganshouting BJP workers from Kolkata and Howrah began marching towards Nabanna at around 12.30 PM. Parts of Howrah district witnessed much of the violence where BJYM national president and Ben-
Police use water cannons to disperse BJP activists’ march towards State Secretariat Nabanna, Oct. 8. (PTI) galuru South MP Tejaswi Surya along with state president Soumitra Khan led a march from Howrah Maidan. They were stopped at the Mallick Gate, prompting angry BJP supporters to attack police with stones. When the protesters tried to pull down the barricades, police burst teargas shells. Failing to quell the rampaging crowds of BJP workers, personnel of Rapid Action Force (RAF) batoncharged them, resulting in injuries to some of the protesters. An unspecified number of agitators were detained. Police claimed they recovered a loaded pistol from one of the protesters. It also alleged BJP workers lobbed crude bombs at police, an accusation rejected by the saffron party as false. Police used teargas, water cannons and batons
to break up the protest at Santragachi which was led by the party’s state secretary Sayantan Basu. The anti-riot police also used chemical-laced water cannons to disperse the violent protesters, officials said. During the clashes, Raju Banerjee and MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato were injured. Banerjee was shifted to a hospital. Similar scenes were witnessed at the third protest march led by BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya and national vice-president Mukul Roy at Hastings-Khidderpore crossing in Kolkata. After BJP workers fought pitched battles with police, Vijayvargiya and Roy bagan a sit-in at the Hastings crossing. Nearly 5,000 police and RAF personnel have been deployed in the disturbed areas.

India has been supporting a national peace and reconciliation process which is Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and Afghancontrolled. On September 12, an Indian delegation attended the inaugural ceremony of the intra-Afghan negotiations in Doha while S Jaishankar joined it through video conference. India has been keenly following the evolving political situation after the US signed a peace deal with the Taliban in February. The deal provided for the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan, effectively drawing curtains to Washington’s 18-year war in the country. The US has lost over 2,400 soldiers in Afghanistan since late 2001. India has also been maintaining that care should be taken to ensure that any such process does not lead to any “ungoverned spaces” where terrorists and their proxies can relocate. India has been calling upon all sections of the political spectrum in Afghanistan to work together to meet the aspirations of all people in that country including those from the minority community for a prosperous and safe future.

New Delhi, Oct 8 (IANS): India’s automobile retail sales rose in September on a sequential basis, industry data showed on Thursday. However, sales remained in the red on a yearon-year basis. The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations data showed that vehicle registration in September rose to 13,44,866 units from 11,88,087 units sold in August and a retail off-take of 11,42,633 units in July. Nevertheless, on a YoY basis, September retail sales declined by 10.24 per cent to 13,44,866 units from 14,98,283 units off-take during the like month of last year. Commenting on September’20 performance, FADA President Vinkesh Gulati in a statement said:
“With the government’s persistent effort to unlock India, the month of September continued to witness automobile registrations on a rise as compared to previous months. “Passenger Vehicles for the first time saw positive growth coming back on YoY basis. With social distancing on customer’s mind coupled with the government’s push to further normalise business conditions and banks becoming more considerate to finance vehicles, entry level passenger vehicles saw good demand thus indicating a preference for personal transportation over public.” He cited new launches and vehicle availability played their part as catalyst. “A lower base during last FY also helped the cause.”
