Be prepared for war: Xi tells troops State govt consultative meet today Staff Reporter/Correspondent
India says it remains vigilant
(L) Xi Jinping speaks during a review of the PLA Navy (R) PLA troops at the Zhurihe military training base in Inner Mongolia AR. (File)
NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (IANS): At a time when the seventh round of India and China military talks to resolve the border disputes in Eastern Ladakh have ended in a deadlock, Chinese President Xi Jinping has told his soldiers, “We must put all our minds and energy on preparing for war.” Xi made these remarks while visiting a Marine Corps base in the Guangdong province, where he made an important speech, Xinhua reported. In his speech, Xinhua reported, “Xi Jinping pointed out that we must put all our minds and energy on preparing for war and main-
tain a state of high alert.” According to Xinhua, Xi emphasised that it is necessary to uphold the party’s absolute leadership over the military, strengthen the party’s innovative theoretical arms, and pay close attention to comprehensively and strictly govern the party and the military. “And ensure that the troops are absolutely loyal, absolutely pure, and absolutely reliable,” Xi told the troops. Xi also called for carrying on the “red gene” and creating a spirit “that is not afraid of hardship and death”. “It is necessary to carry forward the fine traditions,
carry on the red gene, build the unique military culture of the Marine Corps, cultivate a fighting spirit that is not afraid of hardship and death, and bring the troops to life,” Xi added. The Marine Cor ps performs diverse tasks and requires multiple capabilities, Xi said. Xi’s emphasis was on combat training. “It is necessary to persist in leading training by combat, strengthen task traction, strengthen targeted and confrontational training, and beat and exercise the troops hard and severely,” the Chinese President said. He added that it is
necessary to promote innovations in combat theory, training models, and task organisation to improve training levels and actual combat capabilities. Xi said it is necessary to strengthen the integration of subordinate combat forces, combat units, and combat elements, strengthen coordination with other services, straighten out related command and support relationships, and deeply integrate into the joint combat system. It was not clear if Xi’s rallying the troops is aimed at India or the US as China is engaged in a tense standoff with both the countries.
SMSA refutes ASSTOAD’s claim

Grenade attack: AR nab absconder
DIMAPUR, OCT 14 (NPN): Sand Mahaldar and Supplier’s Association (SMSA), Karbi Anglong has termed as “totally false and baseless” the claim made by Assam Sand Supplier’s and Truck Owners Association Dimapur (ASSTOAD) that sand rate had been fixed at Rs 32 per cft at source after much negotiation with 15 mahaldars in Assam. In a press release, SMSA vice president Athik Tisso said that the association had previously agreed, fixed and declared the rate of sand for interstate supply and transportation at Rs.42 per cft. He added SMSA still stood by the declared rate. Tisso stated that ASSTOAD entering into an agreement with individual Mahaldar “cannot alter nor dictate the rate” as the rate was always fixed by SMSA in consultation with Sand Stockist and Supplier’s Union Dimapur and Sand Stockist and Supplier’s Union Chumukedima. Tisso warned that any individual having agreement with any other association outside SMSA’s jurisdiction would be doing so at their own risk. He said that such agreement “shall not disturb and hamper” the overall business operations and interest of genuine mahaldars in Karbi Anglong.

DIMAPUR, OCT 14 (NPN): Security forces on Wednesday arrested the absconding accused involved in the October 10 grenade attack at the Assam Rifles Dhansiri camp near Purana Bazaar area. Sources said that the accused was arrested outside Dimapur and would be brought to Dimapur. As reported on October 13 about the arrest of the prime accused, the PRO IGAR (North) in a statement Wednesday disclosed that the prime suspect identified as one ‘lieut.’ Hupeto Aye admitted to have committed the crime “on orders of NSCN (K-Nikki) faction.” He was apprehended near his residence at Purana Bazaar on October 11, PRO said. AR stated that, by nabbing the culprit within 36 hours of crime, no faction/ organization attempting to derail NPA or disturb the peace of Dimapur town will be spared at any cost.
PTI: The country’s heightened vigilance along the border with China has shown that it is a new and different India of post2014, the government said on Wednesday. The assertion comes amid a stand-off between India and China in eastern Ladakh for over five months. “As far as China is concerned, India has been vigilant at the border that people have understood that this is an India of post-2014 and is a new and different India,” Union minister for Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar told reporters while replying to queries on the issue after a Cabinet meeting. Asked if any discussion took place on the situation with China at the meeting, he replied in the negative. India and China are currently engaged in a dialogue both at military and diplomatic levels to ease the tensions at the border.
Dimapur/KOHIMA, Oct 14 (NPN): A crucial consultative meeting has been convened by the state government with all state political parties, apex Naga tribe organisations, student groups, civil society organisations (CSOs) etc. on October 15 at 10 a.m. at the State Banquet Hall, CM’s residential complex. NPF had earlier decided against attending the meeting which was also followed suit by the Congress and the Janata Dal (United). Significantly, the 14 Apex Naga tribes of Na-
galand which had kept others in suspense, decided to attend the meeting. The meeting has been convened to discuss the Naga political issue and the ongoing peace talks between the “Naga national political organisations and the Government of India”. 14 Apex Naga Tribes: The 14 Apex Naga Tribal Hohos (14 ANTH) have decided to attend the October 15 consultative meeting to be held at the State Banquet Hall, CM residential complex, Kohima. According to sources, the decision was made after a meeting held here on
Convening consultative meeting superfluous: NPCC Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) will stay away from the consultative meeting called by the State government on Thursday at Kohima to discuss Naga political issue and ongoing peace talks between Naga national political organisations and Government of India (GoI). This was decided at NPCC’s Political Affairs Committee (PAC) meeting on Wednesday. PAC was unanimous in its opinion that convening the consultative meeting has become superfluous because it had been made clear by the negotiating parties that talks have successfully concluded on October 31, 2019 and after that, the interlocutor
and governor RN Ravi has had series of consultative meetings with stakeholders, viz., 14 Nagaland Tribes Hohos, NGBF, civil society groups and political parties. The Governor and the Centre already have solution in their minds and a final agreement for signing could soon be expected, it felt. PAC noted that NPCC had already presented the current position of negotiation and stakeholders’ view to High Powered Committee of AICC and leaders of Congress Parliamentary Committees in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha for supporting the views expressed by stake(Cont’d on p-8) holders.
DC, AKM seek action against those revealing details of COVID patients Mokokchung, OCT 14 (NPN): A complaint has been lodged with the Mokokchung police by the deputy commissioner (DC) Mokokchung after highly confidential documents containing names, personal details etc. of some Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) leaders, who tested positive for COVID, went viral on social media. The documents also contained the names of those under contact tracing. The DC in a letter to the SP Mokokchung pointed out that some unscrupulous elements had exposed “highly confidential official documents” containing details of individuals being tested positive for COIVD and under contact tracing, in violation of the July 1, 2020 order issued by the district administration. The DC has urged the police to investigate the matter and initiate appropriate action
Wednesday. Sources said that the 14 tribes resolved to attend the meeting based on its resolution for an early solution to the Naga issue. It may be recalled that the 14 hohos in a statement on August 11 appealed to the negotiators to stand committed to the cause and deliver the long-awaited solution to the people. According to the hohos, the voice and aspirations of the Nagas have grown louder each day seeking a peaceful solution to the protracted Naga political issue despite their differences over multiple issues.
against the culprits as per the law. DC further urged the police to act against those individuals for circulating fake COVID news and rumours in social media relating to Impur Clinic on October 13 and 14 and also against those who had circulated on social media, the details of 18 police personnel who had tested positive for COVID. Meanwhile, AKM has condemned making personal details of its leaders and members, who were currently in self-quarantine and isolation, on social media and making them viral. AKM president Nungdokyanger and general secretary Nekmi Longkumer termed this as a direct violation of medical ethics and patients’ right to privacy and confidentiality. They said it also violated clause 13 of the Nagaland Epidemic Disease (COVID19) Regulations 2020 under the Epidemic Disease Act,
1897. “At this time we need to be wise, empathize and support each other. The AKM would like to assure that all needed precautions and SOPs for its members,” the statement added. AKM said it understood the rationale and fear behind the actions that happened but pointed out that this has put the mental and emotional health of the quarantined members and their family members at risk. This has also created unwanted fear and stigma of the members in the eye of the public, it added. A K M wa r n e d t h a t any individual/organisation found to be sharing and creating such cases would be reported to the authority concerned for criminal prosecution. It also urged the district administration and law enforcing agencies to take note of such untoward cases and take necessary actions.
Winter could be colder this season: Met deptt NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (PTI): India Meteorological Department (IMD) Wednesday said that winter could be colder this season due to the prevailing La Nina conditions. Addressing a webinar on ‘Cold Wave Risk Reduction’, IMD director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra said there should not be an impression that climate change leads to rise in the temperature, but on the contrary, it leads to erratic weather. “As weak La Nina condition is prevailing, we can expect more cold this year. The El Nino and La Nina conditions play a dominant role if you consider the large scale factor for the occurrence of cold wave conditions,” he said, adding that La Nina conditions were favourable for cold wave conditions, while El Nino conditions were unfavourable for it.
60 AC seat: BJP nominee consensus candidate of PDA DoSE urges students to avail ‘free 4.0 education’ Correspondent
KOHIMA, OCT 14 (NPN): Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) has declared that BJP’s candidate for 60 Pungro-Kiphire Assembly constituency (AC) by-poll was PDA’s consensus candidate. Stating this during a ticket distribution ceremony of BJP nominee Lirimong Sangtam, NDPP secretary general Abu Metha said though NDPP was keen on fielding its candidate, after a series of discussion, the party decided to go by the pre-poll seat sharing formula of 2018 and support the BJP candidate. He asserted that the BJP candidate had the mandate of chief minister Neiphiu Rio and NDPP and assured full support to the candidate from all the rank and file of his party. He added that NDPP was happy to be a

part of the alliance. Metha also called for improvement of coordination between the two parties and urged BJP workers to spread the message about achievements of PDA to the people. In his address, State BJP president Temjen Imna Along said setting up the consensus candidate showed the magnanimous relationship within PDA partners to help the people of Na-
galand. Acknowledging NDPP for supporting the BJP candidate, he said it was natural for the regional party to desire putting its own candidate and have its own elected member from the constituency. He asserted that workers of both the parties would work together to win the seat and assured BJP’s full support to NDPP in 14 Southern Angami by-poll. Along
further appealed to the party workers to ensure that the PDA consensus candidate emerged victorious. BJP candidate Lirimong thanked the party for allotting the ticket to him and assured to do his best to win the by-poll. In his brief address, BJP national spokesperson and adviser Mmhonlumo Kikon said Lirimong would represent the youth of Nagaland, asserting that BJP favoured young leaders. Already having maximum young legislators in the State Assembly, Kikon said BJP wished to add to the tally and exuded confidence that Lirimong would win the by-poll. Minister V Kashiho Sangtam, who too was present, claimed that BJP was one of the largest democratic parties in the world and losing the by-poll would be a great humiliation.

KOHIMA, OCT 14 (NPN): With COVID-19 pandemic transforming the teachinglearning process and shifting physical classrooms to virtual classrooms, the state Department of School Education (DoSE) has urged students to avail “India 4.0 - Dr. APJ”, under which one crore children from economically backward families studying in Classes V-X would be given “free 4.0 education”. Speaking to Nagaland Post, assistant director school education and state nodal officer, B Nellayappan said that the notification of the project was issued on October 6, 2020 to private and government schools. However, he said that only 1000 students have registered for the project against 15,000 slots available for (Cont’d on p-8) the state. Informing that
phase-I would start on October 15, the nodal officer said that the selected students would have access to online programmes like xPM 4.0 (Exponential Performance Mindset) which accelerates personal and professional growth required for the 21st Century and CCBP 4.0 (Continuous Capacity Building Program) to build industry-ready skills. Besides, he said that a comprehensive ecosystem for accelerated online learning was also designed with access to High Performance Frameworks like ICP, IGP, ICQ, ATF and High Performance Tools like Advanced Portal, IDM 4.0, iB Com free of cost. Nellayappan stated that the selected students would be trained by industry experts and alumni of Stanford, IITs, IIMs, etc and would be taken care of until they reach 21 years of age. He said that the training
would completely online to help the child connect from anywhere and learn. The nodal officer maintained that building 4.0 skills right from an early age would open up immense opportunities for children and youth, be it in the job market or to create innovative products. Further, Nellayappan said that the department would appoint district nodal officers (DNOs) to assist selected students in pursuing the course. He, therefore, encouraged school heads, teachers and parents to encourage children to make use of the opportunity. The nodal officer said that interested students could visit https://www. onthegomodel.com/freeeducation-for-children and complete the registration well in advance as seats are offered on a first-come firstserved basis. She said “we were allowed to go to our fields but we could not hire extra hands to help us, the family had to manage it”. She as a farmer encourages fellow villagers to grow one’s own food saying, “The biggest lesson for
me this year is the value of growing our own food, using our own seeds and not being market-dependent, food security lies in our fields”. Bounuo Zuyie, farmer, vendor, mother and wife from Rusoma village under Kohima district of Nagaland is also a member of SEWA Nagaland, a collective of women workers in the informal sector, and a leader in her Rusoma unit. She has been actively working at her capacity to guide and provide linkages and entitlements to the marginalised women in her community. The news of the Kohima Municipal Council
(KMC) providing a designated place for vendors to sell their produces came as relieve for many vendors in Kohima town, but not enough to accommodate all. Bounuo took the decision to help with linking the farmers to the market. She collectivized the produce from women farmers at Rusoma, contacted some of the vendors at Kohima, and with the permit (issued by KMC through the assistance of SEWA Kohima), she made as many trips as possible to Kohima to sell the produce. There were 30 families approximately from whom Bounuo collected the pro-
duce providing a stable income for the families during the difficult time. Another initiative of Rusoma village is the Friday Bazaar which Bounuo and her fellow farmers are a regular. Tsusangshe, a middle aged mother of four from Phuvkiu village, Kiphire district rears pigs as a source of income. She shares her experiences in rearing pigs and says “the knowledge she has gained on the importance of pig management, feeds, and sanitation of Pig sty and to rear improved breed has helped her a lot.” At present, she and her husband are rearing
two breeding sow and four fattener. Their family has increased their agricultural land to 3 acres for growing maize to be used for pig feeds. She wants to increase pig stock, however, due to financial problem and cash required for children’s education and home maintenance she has not been able to. The pandemic has not affected their pig rearing and agricultural activities and have been able to carry out their normal farming operations in the village. Kalinliu Dangmei of New Jalukie village under Peren district used to stay in a rented place in Kohima and earned her living through sell of green vegetables. However, the pandemic changed her daily occupation and she started collecting bamboo shoots. Kalinliu Dangmei initiated to take up the work of collecting jungle produce especially bamboo shoots and King Chili from the poor women farmers so as to have means of sustainable livelihoods for each other by means of this very activity. Her activity has greatly helped other women in the village in generating daily income.

Agartala, Oct 14 (PTI): Dissident MLAs of the ruling BJP in Tripura met the partys national president JP Nadda in Delhi and expressed their grievances about the alleged “bad governance” in the state, one of the rebels said on Wednesday. A group of four MLAs representing the dissidents also informed him of the state’s political and organisational situation. However, they are tight lipped about what Nadda told them at the meeting which lasted for more than an hour on Tuesday night. “The outcome of the meeting will be cleared after the end of the Durga Puja festival (in the fourth week of this month),” Ram Prasad Paul, one of the four legislators who attended the meeting, said over the phone from the national capital. Legislator Sudip Roy Barman, who had criticised Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on several occasions before being axed as the health minister in June, was not present at the meeting. He is considered

the leader of the dissident group. “We have not come here to complain against anyone. But being the members or leaders of the BJP, we all have the right and responsibility to inform the central leadership about the happenings in the state,” Pal said. Claiming that some people are doing damage to the party in Tripura, he said that they handed over to Nadda a memorandum detailing organisational and political scenario of the state, and sought his intervention immediately. “We are here not for us but for the party. Meghalaya HM rules out new legislation for witchcraft-crimes Correspondent Shillong, Oct 14: Meghalaya Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui has urged people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands after an 80-year-old man accused of practicing witchcraft at a remote village in West Khasi Hills district was buried alive. Rymbui ruled out the need to come up with a new legislation to deal witchcraft-related crimes. “The laws that are there can take care of all crimes, be it assault and murder. The IPC and CrPC that are already there to take care,” he said Moris Marngar was buried alive with his hands and legs tied with a rope, and his body was put in a sack, by his own nephews at Nongdisong village on October 7 after he was accused of practicing witchcraft and was accused of casting an evil spell on his niece Sildaris, which led to her suffering since the last three months. The body was exhumed on October 12 and after postmortem, the body was
handed over to the family for a funeral rite which was held in the village. “I strongly condemn such act of lynching and superstitions. I sympathize with the family of the person who died in this circumstance,” Rymbui said, urging people to refrain from taking the law into their own hands but should inform the law enforcing authority if there is anything suspicious. The Home Minister said that existing laws like the IPC and CrPC are enough to take care of crimes being committed including assault and murder. Rymbui assured that the law would take its course of action against the perpetrators. He informed that some persons involved in the heinous crime have been arrested and a charge sheet would be filed very soon. Police have arrested eight persons -Denial Marngar (40) Jayless Marngar (27, Diferwell Marngar (30), Walphanus Marngar (32), Exstarning Marngar (52), Beransius Marngar (30), Kyrshanborlang Marngar 25) and Michalpol Marngar in this connection.
has and will continue to have 36 MLAs (in Tripura) in the coming days. There is no question of any change in that number,” Paul said. The rebel MLAs were camping in Delhi for the past few days to meet Nadda to inform him of the alleged “bad governance” by the Biplab Kumar Deb administration, which, they claimed, could lead to the party’s defeat in the 2023 Assembly poll. Twenty-five of the 36 BJP MLAs of Tripura want a proper reshuffling in the council of ministers so that good governance could be delivered to people, one of the dissidents had said earlier. The dissidents were earlier informed that Nadda is likely to meet them on October 15 or 16. However, they received a call from his office telling them that he would meet them on Tuesday night. “We are 10-11 MLAs here but only four were asked to meet the party president due to the pandemic situation,” Paul said. duct of the by-polls amid the surging positive cases of COVID-19, police along with other law enforcing agencies have been conducting a series of mopping operations as well as crackdown on drugs and alcohol in the district, particularly constituencies in Thoubal district –Lilong AC and Wanging-Tentha AC where by-polls will be conducted on November. 10,000 ineligible names to be deleted from final NRC in Assam
Guwahati, Oct 14 (PTI): Around 10,000 names will be deleted from the final NRC in Assam as many "ineligible persons" and their descendants were included in the list, according to a directive issued by its state coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma and officials in the know of the decision. Sarma wrote to all the Deputy Commissioners and District Registrar of Citizen Registration (DRCR) on Tuesday, directing them to issue speaking orders for the deletion of such names. "...as per the reports received from your end through Webform, some names of ineligible persons belonging to the categories of DF (declared foreigners)/ DV ('D' voters)/PFT (pending in Foreigners Tribunals) along with their descendants have found entry to the NRC," he said. Sarma directed the district officials to issue orders for deletion of such names from the NRC as per Clause 4(6) of the Schedule under the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003 after "specifical-
ly ascertaining the identity of the person". Explaining the rule and some other relevant clauses, Sarma pointed out that the authorities concerned can verify and include or exclude any name at any time before the publication of the final NRC. Though the final National Register of Citizens for Assam was made public in August last year, it is yet to be notified by the Registrar General of India, leaving the historic and controversial document without any official validity. "You are, therefore, requested to submit the list of such persons who are not eligible for having their names in the NRC along with speaking order justifying reasons for each cases for necessary action for deletion of such names," Sarma said in the letter. A software application for submission of the reviewed results of such persons along with mechanism for uploading of the scanned freshly written speaking orders will be rolled out shortly, he added. "The verification would
mandatorily require the correct identity of the person so that no ambiguity arises in future as far as identification of the person is concerned," the letter to the districts said. Though the letter did not mention how many people will be excluded, persons in the know of the development said that around 10,000 people have been identified whose names were "wrongly included" in the final NRC and will now be excluded. "This is a mix of all communities. The figure looks a bit big because it includes the descendants of the persons from the three categories mentioned in the letter," a source said. The final NRC was released on August 31 last year, excluding the names of 19,06,657 persons. A total of 3,11,21,004 names were included out of 3,30,27,661 applicants. After the publication of the final NRC, almost all stakeholders and political parties criticised it as a faulty document, alleging exclusion of indigenous people and the inclusion of illegal immigrants.

The pristine beauty of Mawsmai, Sohra are beckoning visitors, even as the State health and tourism departments have issued strict guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the restart of tourism in the State. The Mawsmai-Nongthymmai Elaka on Wednesday announced its decision to allow local tourists to visit the various tourist spots in the area from October 16. the plains of neighbouring Bangladesh, the Eco Park, Mot Palong viewpoint and the newly launched tourist spot at Khmat Kharai Fall known to many as ‘Double Drive’. "The decision followed the notification issued by the State government for reopening of tourist spots from October 16 with strict adherence to the social distancing protocols,” says a local entrepreneur in the field of tourism. The Mawsmai-Nongthymmai Elaka has also urged local visitors to maintain discipline and decorum while visiting these tourist spots.
It also warned against littering and dumping of plastics and other kinds of waste. Further, it was also announced that all hotels and guest houses in the area have been allowed to re-open to enable local visitors to stay. On the other hand, popular tourist spots across the State, including in the capital city are being refurbished with special attention on entry and exit of visitors, which would be strictly monitored in keeping with all safety protocols, including checking of temperature, maintenance of hand hygiene and physical
distancing, as specified by the government. “We look forward to re-start of tourism, which has always been the major source of income for us,” says one of the many local taxi drivers in the State capital, who have been earning, mostly from ferrying tourists. “Although tourists from outside will not be coming, we are happy that the government has decided to re-start domestic tourism,” says yet another cabbie, who hopes that the forthcoming Durga Puja festival would boost local tourism, as people would probably prefer to go out to spend time in open spaces as several restrictions have been put on the celebrations, especially pandal hopping and inter-locality movement to keep the viral infection at bay this festive season. Three tourist spots in and around the State capital, including Ward’s Lake, Elephant Falls and Nehru Park, Barapani (Umiam) were allowed to re-open for local tourists from last month, with many visitors welcoming the move.

NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (PTI): The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the STARS project under the new National Education Policy to support states in strengthening the school education system, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said. The government has started implementing the new National Education Policy (NEP) and as part of the process it has approved the Strengthening Teaching-Learning and Results for States (STARS) project, Javadekar told a press conference after the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. According to Education Ministry officials, the World Bank-suppor ted STARS project, which is estimated to cost Rs 5,718 crore, seeks to support the states in developing, implementing, evaluating and improving interventions with direct linkages to improved education outcomes and school to work transition strategies for improved labour market outcomes.

“India has started seriously implementing the new National Education Policy and therefore a new programme -- STARS -been cleared today by the cabinet as the base of the policy is not rote learning but learning with understanding,” Javadekar said. “Learning outcomes are important so there has to be teaching and learning. We have to improve board exams which will be competency based. This will impact the processes of education in early childhood and fundamental literacy has to be achieved. ‘Pandemic has underscored need for greater global cooperation’ NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (PTI): President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday said the coronavirus pandemic has underscored the need for greater global cooperation to ensure collective health and economic well-being of people. He also expressed optimism that the international community will soon find a solution to the pandemic and will emerge stronger and more resilient from the crisis. “President Kovind remarked that the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the need for greater global cooperation to ensure our collective health and economic well-being,” a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said. In a virtual ceremony, the President accepted credentials from envoys of Switzerland, Malta and Botswana. Ralf Heckner, Ambassador of Switzerland, Reuben Gauci, High Commis-

sioner of Malta, and Gilbert Shimane Mangole, High Commissioner of Botswana, presented their credentials to the President. Speaking on the occasion, President Kovind noted that India has enjoyed warm and friendly relations with all the three countries and that the ties were deeply rooted in a common vision of peace and prosperity. He also thanked their governments for supporting India’s candidature for the non-permanent seat of UN Security Council for the term 2021-22.
Cabinet okays Rs 520-cr package under NRLM for J&K and Ladakh New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI): The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved a special package of Rs 520 crore for Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh under the National Rural Livelihood Mission, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said. Addressing a press conference, Javadekar said the package for Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) will ensure sufficient funds to both the Union Territories. He said the decision is in line with Centre’s aim to universalise all centrally sponsored beneficiary-oriented schemes in J&K and Ladakh in a time-bound manner. The Cabinet has approved a special package of Rs 520 crore for the UTs for a period of five years till financial year 2023-24 and decided to ensure funding of DAY-NRLM in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh on a demand-driven basis without linking allocation with poverty ratio during this extended period, the Rural Development Ministry said in a statement. This is based on the outcomes of the evaluation pointing to the potential of the Mission to improve the quality of life of rural households and women empowerment and given the changed circumstances
in the UTs of J&K and Ladakh, it added. For technical reasons, Javadekar said, very few women were identified and were eligible in Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh for the programme. So the criterion has been changed for the two UTs. Around two-third rural women will be covered and 10.58 lakh women will get the benefit from the special package of Rs 520 crore for the next five years, he said. Javadekar said there are around 63 lakh self-help groups in the country and 7 crore women are members of these groups and they have been granted Rs 3 lakh crore loan, of which only 2.3 per cent are NPAs. The Modi government aims to reach out to 10 crore women in the country through this scheme, of which over 10 lakh will be from J&K and Ladakh. DAY-NRLM is a centrally sponsored programme that aims at eliminating rural poverty through promotion of multiple livelihoods and improved access to financial services for the estimated 10 crore rural poor households. It involves working with community institutions through community professionals in the spirit of self-help, making it different from the previous poverty eradication programmes.
separate assessment board or institution will come into force. The programme has been supported by World Bank which will provide financial support of up to Rs 3,700 crore,” he added. PARAKH, an independent and autonomous institution, will be set up under the ministry’s Department of School Education and Literacy, officials said. Among the tasks of such a centre would be to leverage the experiences of states selected for the operation by collecting, curating and sharing these experiences with other states through online portals, social and
other media engagement, technical workshops, state visits and conferences, they said. “The overall focus and components of the STARS project are aligned with the objectives of NEP of focusing on quality based learning outcomes. The project envisions improving the overall monitoring and measurement activities in the Indian school education system through interventions in selected states,” a senior ministry official said. “The project also shifts focus from the provision of inputs and maintaining of outputs to actual outcomes by linking the receipt and disbursement of funds to these outcomes,” the official added. The centrally sponsored project will cover six states -- Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala and Odisha. The identified states will be supported for various interventions for improving the quality of education. Besides this project, it is also envisaged to imple-
ment a similar ADB-funded project in five states -- Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Assam. All states will partner with one other state for sharing their experiences and best practices. “The project aims at strengthening the ministry’s national data systems to capture robust and authentic data on retention, transition and completion rates of students. The project also includes a Contingency Emergency Response Component (CERC) under the national component which would enable it to be more responsive to any natural, man-made and health disasters,” the official said. “It will help the government respond to situations leading to loss of learning such as school closures and infrastructure damage, inadequate facilities and use technology for facilitating remote learning. The CERC component would facilitate the rapid re-categorization of financing and the utilization of streamlined financing request procedures,” the official added.
NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (PTI): The Union Health Ministry has initiated the process of importing liquid oxygen as part of its preparedness to meet any unforeseen shortage during the winters when the country may witness an increase in COVID-19 cases leading to a rise in demand for oxygen. HLL Lifecare Limited, a public sector undertaking, has floated a global tender on Wednesday on behalf of the Health Ministry for procuring one lakh metric tonne of liquid oxygen. The oxygen is being procured for various central and state government hospitals. The entire exercise of importing and then distributing the medical oxygen is estimated to cost Rs 600-700 crore, official sources said. As on Tuesday, around 3.97 per cent of the COVID19 patients were on oxygen support, 2.46 per cent were in ICU beds which are again with oxygen support and 0.40 pc on ventilator support.
In March, before the country went into a lockdown, the country had a manufacturing capacity of around 6,400 metric tonne of oxygen per day, of which around 1,000 metric tonne was being used for medical purposes daily while the rest was utilised by industries, sources said. “ I n d u s t r i e s h ave opened up following unlock procedures and as on September 30, the country’s daily capacity of oxygen production is around 7,000 metric tonne, of which around 3,094 metric tonne is being used for both COVID and non-COVID patients and is just enough to meet the demands,” a source said. “So this one lakh metric tonne of liquid oxygen which is being planned to be procured from foreign countries would create a one month buffer in case demand rises further during the winter season,” the source explained. The issue was discussed at a meeting held
by the Cabinet Secretary on October 10, following which it was decided to import liquid oxygen. Even though India is witnessing a declining trend in daily new COVID19 cases, experts fear that the upcoming festive season and following winter months may see a spike in coronavirus infections. Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has urged people to observe COVID19-appropriate behaviour such as wearing masks, hand hygiene, maintaining respiratory etiquette and staying away from congregations, citing the possibility of increased novel coronavirus transmission during winters. “These vir uses are known to thrive better in the cold weather and low humidity conditions. In view of these, it would not be wrong to assume that the winter season may see increased rates of transmission of the novel coronavirus in the Indian context too,” he said.
PDP members gather at Mehbooba’s residence as she vows to fight back SRINAGAR, OCT 14 (PTI): The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was almost written off after most of its top leaders deserted it last year, but the scenes at the residence of party president Mehbooba Mufti after her release on Tuesday night following 14 months in preventive detention suggest that there is a lot of fight left in her. From a 70-year-old party worker from south Kashmir to whatever remains of the senior party leadership, PDP members on Wednesday made a beeline to Fairview Bungalow -- the official residence of Mehbooba -- hoping to meet the woman who is now being dubbed by her admirers as the ‘Iron Lady of Kashmir’. She is ready for the fight, was the common re-
frain of those who met her. The PDP is using social media to the hilt to enhance the image of Mehbooba, the first and last woman chief minister of erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state, by posting videos and photographs of her meetings with her party workers. Noor Mohammad, a party worker from south Kashmir who can barely stand upright due to old age, was among the people who met Mehbooba Mufti less than 24 hours after her release. “I left home at 6 AM to ensure that I return only after meeting my sister and leader Mehbooba ji. Her father (late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed) was blessed, so is she,” the elderly man said. The scenes at Mehbooba’s residence were in complete contrast to last
year when leader after leader deserted the PDP and later joined hands with Altaf Bukhari -- a former minister and close aide of the PDP president who floated his own political outfit later. “Mehbooba Ji was detained for the longest period which shows how much the BJP government at the Centre is frightened of her popularity among the masses,” Bashir Ahmad, a party worker from Anantnag district, said after meeting the PDP president. Several PDP leaders, including former MLA from Wachi Aijaz Mir, posted laudatory tweets about the party leader. “After a detention period of 1 year and 2 months, our party president @MehboobaMufti sahiba released today. We salute her steadfast determination &

GDP comorbidity
ust as India’s economy was starting to look up at the beginning of 2020, the rising tide gave way to the COVID-19 shock. The pandemic has shaken the foundations of the global economy which is the most unprecedented shock in post-war history. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) slashed the growth forecast for India for the second time this year saying that the country’s economy will contract 10.3% in FY21, the third steepest decline after Spain and Italy, and the sharpest fall among emerging markets and developing countries. In its latest report on the global economy, the IMF forecasts that India’s Gross Domestic Product(GDP) will plunge 10.3 percent this fiscal year ending on March 31, 2021, the biggest contraction since the country became independent in 1947. This represents a sharp downwards revision from the IMF’s previous prediction in June when it said output would shrink 4.5 percent. In April it was expecting growth of 1.9 percent. Despite the government in Delhi continuing to deny the reality and instead indulging in rhetoric, India’s GDP of Rs 203 lakh crore in March 2020 will, therefore, decline to Rs 183 lakh crore on March 31, 2021. At an exchange rate of Rs 75 per dollar, India’s GDP in March 2021 will thus be $2.4 trillion. However, the IMF expects India to grow 8.8 percent next year. Obviously, some of the damage will be long-lasting. Assuming that India’s economy grows at 7% between 2022 and 2024, the permanent loss would be 10%, according to a recent report from Mumbai-based credit ratings agency CRISIL. “To catch-up would require average GDP growth to surge to 11% over the next three fiscals, something that has never happened before.”There are several hurdles the economy will encounter. First, a fall in the value for the rupee against the dollar, reducing India’s dollar-denominated GDP. Second, tepid export growth, worsening India’s trade deficit. Third, stalled privatisation of listed Public Sector Units (PSUs), robbing them off greater efficiencies. Fourth, a lingering Covid-19 pandemic, stalling the resumption of full economic activity. Fifth, frequent state assembly election cycles, leading to populist policies, not necessarily sensible, reformist economic policies. Despite these caveats, the Indian economy will move forward haltingly but stubbornly. When Prime Minister Narendra Modi took office on May 26, 2014, he inherited a broken economy. GDP growth in 2013-14 had plunged to 4.7%. Non-performing assets (NPAs) for banks had risen alarmingly. Worse, they had been hidden in bank balance sheets by evergreening - rolling over bad old loans with new loans .While the Modi government inherited a toxic banking sector, it hasn’t covered itself in glory either. It has erred by suspending the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) for six months till September 25 on account of the pandemic. Momentum has been lost. The second error was in the hastily implemented GST which with multiple rates. has added more problems than solutions. Luxury goods and some food items are heavily taxed at 28% whereas a 0% tax would have spurred more spending and GDP growth. The third and most serious error by the Modi government is not providing a credible financial stimulus to the economy. It wants the cash-strapped private sector to invest, but won’t invest itself. India has to set its GDP house in order before dreaming of overtaking China and Modi will have work on the basics.
DailyDevotion The Key to the Missionary’s Work
Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” —Matthew 28:18-19 The key to the missionary’s work is the authority of Jesus Christ, not the needs of the lost. We are inclined to look on our Lord as one who assists us in our endeavors for God. Yet our Lord places Himself as the absolute sovereign and supreme Lord over His disciples. He does not say that the lost will never be saved if we don’t go— He simply says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations….” He says, “Go on the basis of the revealed truth of My sovereignty, teaching and preaching out of your living experience of Me.” “Then the eleven disciples went…to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them” (Matthew 28:16). If I want to know the universal sovereignty of Christ, I must know Him myself. I must take time to worship the One whose name I bear. Jesus says, “Come to Me…”— that is the place to meet Jesus— “all you who labor and are heavy laden…” (Matthew 11:28)— and how many missionaries are! We completely dismiss these wonderful words of the universal Sovereign of the world, but they are the words of Jesus to His disciples meant for here and now. “Go therefore….” To “go” simply means to live. Acts 1:8 is the description of how to go. Jesus did not say in this verse, “Go into Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria,” but, “…you shall be witnessesto Me in [all these places].” He takes upon Himself the work of sending us. “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you…” (John 15:7)— that is the way to keep going. Where we are placed is then a matter of indifference to us, because God sovereignly engineers our goings. “None of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus…” (Acts 20:24). That is how to keep going until we are gone from this life.

Post-mortem
Building rural women’s resilience in the wake of COVID-19
H
ow far women of rural areas are familiar with International Day of Rural Women is really a qualm. Do they really get a single day to take rest, have good time, and have fun? It is a question to pose. But globally 15th October is celebrated as International Day of Rural Women under a specific theme given by the United Nations each year. This year on International Day of Rural Women, UN celebrates International Day of Rural Women under the theme “Building rural women’s resilience in the wake of COVID-19,” to create awareness of these women’s struggles, their needs, and their critical and key role in our society. Rural women and girls are leaders in agriculture, food security and nutrition, land, managing natural resource management and unpaid and domestic care work. They are at the frontline when natural resources and agriculture are threatened. In fact, globally, one in three employed women works in agriculture. Women also collect biomass fuels, manually process food materials, and pump water; eighty percent of house-
holds without piped water rely on women and girls for water collection. Their contribution toward human development from various sectors whether it is economy, care giving, nurturing and even protection of the environment is indeed inconsiderable. A quarter of the world’s population - work as farmers, wage earners, and entrepreneurs. But Less than 20% of landholders worldwide are women. In rural areas, the gender pay gap is as high as 40%. Reducing the gap in labour force participation rates between men and women by 25% by the year 2025 could raise global GDP by 3.9%.If women in rural areas had the same access to agricultural assets, education, and markets as men, agricultural production could be increased, and the number of hungry people reduced by 100-150 million globally. Women of rural India are extensively involved in the activities of agriculture. But the nature of involvement varies with the time context and region. Women’s role is extended from manager to landless labourer. Firstly, women play the role of primary seed keepers, processors. They
are experts in food production in the agricultural field to food preparation in the kitchen. Secondly, due to globalization agricultural pattern shifted to capital intensive, chemical intensive systems, therefore women have to bear disproportionate cots of both displacement and health hazards. Thirdly, Women are always double burden in food production, and due to gender discrimination they get lower returns for their work. Fourthly, their life are more vulnerable because as the livelihoods and incomes of farmers in general, and women agriculturists in particular are eroded, they are displaced from productive roles, women in agriculture and their status is further devalued, while the patriarchal power of those who control assets and benefit from asset transfer due to globalisation is increased, other social processes are triggered which result in increased violence against women. Women of the North East India play very significant role in food production and their contribution toward economic growth for the region can’t be de-
nied while making policy to address urbanization viz smart cities. By shrinking the space of rural women in the name of urbanization government has not only snatching livelihood but also prohibiting right to space in the city. The globalization oblige to have trans-border trading including food, weakening the non-industrialised societies of India especially Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya etc. In due process subsistence production has been neglected by the policy makers. There is an urgent need to redefine the concept of development in India. Policy maker should also look into the social aspect of development which is beyond the infrastructural development. Whereas policy formulation, regional module should follow rather than western module of development of the society because our national composition is totally different from western counties. In the name of developmental changes the need and aspiration of rural women are always denied and devalued specially in various parts of Northeast India. Their traditional knowledge and skill are not archived and transcended to younger generation as much as it
Nagas can rebuild our future if there is unity of purpose
T
he Naga Rising (TNR) has issued several public statements on the Naga political negotiations between August 2019 and August 2020, a summary of which is posted on our websitewww.thenagarising. com under the title ‘The Naga Rising and its position on the Indo-Naga political issue’. The immediate focus of this statement is limited to the nature and signing of an agreement with India and the position of The Naga Rising on this. It has become quite clear that the upcoming peace accord with India will not fulfill the fullest aspiration of the Naga political movement. A few points are noted here for public record. 1. Recognizing the long held tradition of the Naga political struggle, The Naga Rising had earlier taken the stand that the mandate for political negotiation with the Government of India rests with the Naga Political Groups (NPGs). The signatories to a peace accord, if and when it happens, must be the NPGs and representative/s of the Government of India. The state government, Tribal Hohos, Church or other stakeholders have never been part of the negotiations and, therefore, they cannot be made to sign or be held accountable. If required, they may be present solely as witness. This is our viewpoint. 2. Going by past record, the Government of India may insist on a ‘Memorandum of Settlement’ as was done with the Assam Accord (1985) and Mizoram Accord (1986). The Naga political issue or signing of a Naga Accord cannot be equated with a ‘memorandum’. And the fact that many of the substantive issue/s has been reserved for future negotiation, the proposed Naga peace accord cannot be treated as a final ‘settlement’. By all account it is ‘interim’ in nature. The offer of the Government of India to
take up all unresolved issues through ‘democratic process’ is a welcomed approach, but a vague commitment as it is like giving a cheque without any signature, date or amount. Delhi has no answer why past commitments have still not been fulfilled. Nagas cannot be fooled all the time. Drawing lessons from past experiences of IndoNaga negotiations and the failure to meet commitments, Naga negotiators must demand written guarantees to facilitate all ‘unresolved issues’. This should be done through a sustained and continuous political engagement within a reasonable timeframe and to hold the Government of India accountable. 3. Our concern, already highlighted, is downgrading the Naga issue from a political one to a law and order issue. After many years of the bureaucracy and security establishment handling the peace process, a mutually agreed framework/position for an agreement is now in place. It is now for the political leadership to take the lead in concluding the present talks on the Naga issue and not let it be held hostage to the security and military establishment. The Indian political leadership is aware that ‘a unique’, ‘out-of-the-box’ solution and ‘some special arrangement’ would have to be made for the Nagas. T h e Re p o r t o f t h e All-Party Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs—2019 and its strong recommendation that the Government of India “should tread carefully on the issues sensitive to the Nagas and not let vested interests highjack the peace narrative”, must guide the political executive to conclude the present talks with an agreement at the earliest. 4. The present stalemate involving the Government of India and the Naga negotiators over the latter’s
demand for a separate flag and constitution requires courage, vision and statesmanship of Indian leaders. The peace process, spanning more than two decades, has been successful because both sides exhibited a give and take approach. In the course, we believe that Nagas have respected India’s problems and position on many counts, including her security need. India should likewise reciprocate Naga aspirations as this is the only way forward towards an honourable accord. We believe a Naga flag or constitution is not a threat to India and should be part of the peace accord. This will guarantee long term peace, stability and security in the region. 5. Since August 2019, The Naga Rising has been appealing to one and all on the need to seek convergence of the parallel talks for an early conclusion. Early on The Naga Rising had proposed to the Prime Minister to appoint a Group of Naga Interlocutors to mediate between the different Naga warring groups that would facilitate convergence and conclusion of the talks. To ensure a smooth and peaceful transfer of power and competencies, The Naga Rising also suggested the need for a power and responsibility sharing arrangement among the Naga Political Groups. The Naga Rising has been consistent in its appeal to Naga elders, tribal hohos, civil society and the church to explore innovative ideas to address the differences and divisions between the Naga negotiating parties. Conclusion: The Naga Rising believes that the above points need to be the focus if the peace process were to see the next stage of concluding the present negotiations. The Naga Rising has not given up hope yet. Prayer of repent and wisdom from God can lead us forward. We believe that Nagas can rise up and rebuild our future if there is unity of purpose. The Naga Rising
needed. This will devalue women in coming years. Identity of rural women particularly from North East India is based on various traditional knowledge and skills gathered from their elder generation. Structural barriers and discriminatory social norms continue to constrain women’s decision-making power and political participation in rural households and communities. Women and girls in rural areas lack equal access to productive resources and assets, public services, such as education and health care, and infrastructure, including water and sanitation, while much of their labour remains invisible and unpaid, even as their workloads become increasingly heavy due to the out-migration of men. Globally, with few exceptions, every gender and development indicator for which data are available reveals that rural women fare worse than rural men and urban women and those they disproportionately experience poverty, exclusion, and the effects of climate change. As we know women are already in disadvantage position due to structural barriers, Covid-19 has aggravated the problem into
more deeper for the women especially from rural areas. In the remote area they are unable to access to quality health services, essential medicines. Gender discrimination, superstitious beliefs, stereotypical values and taboos are also widening the gap between men and women, urban and remote as well. Building rural women’s resilience in the wake of COVID-19 in each and every nook and corner of the globe is truly very important and necessary, because the primary sector of the economy is served by rural areas and most of the contribution goes from women folk. Long run lockdown has witnessed the disconnection between rural and urban areas as well as it witnessed the breakdown of supply chain. Therefore, it is very important to give focus on the contribution of rural areas especially contribution of women toward the every aspects of life. Women empowerment is under veil if we talk about only the life of privilege women. It is the urgent need of understanding women life from various perspectives differently. A Naga Catholic understanding on ‘Indo-Naga’ political conflict
T
he Catholic Community of Nagaland avail this God-given opportunity to thank our creator for having created us as Nagas in His very own image and likeness, thus bestowing upon us His own divine dignity. Just as much as we treasure our own dignified lives, we too treasure and uphold the dignity of every fellow human being. We believe that every human person, in the form of communities or nations, can live honourably or peacefully without suppressing or being suppressed. In our Catholic understanding of our Christian faith, there is absolutely no room for oppressing or suppressing fellow human being or nation in any manner be it political, social, economic, etc. It would be against the divine will of our Creator if in anyway, any fellow human being is discriminated on any ground for such act defiles the divine dignity of God presence in every human person. We, members of the Catholic Church, are much disturbed and pained to be experiencing oppressive, suppressive, discriminating and dehumanizing times inflicted upon the Nagas by fellow Nagas and by other fellow human beings in the form of Government of India and Government of Myanmar. If exploitation for political, social, economic or religious ground is justified, then there can be no JUST PEACE at any time amongst people or nations. We the Nagas, believe that from generations to generations, we lived a life without any form of subjugation nor did we subjugate any people or community. But now history has so
chanced that we are living under subjugation and placed in different administrative jurisdictions in the countries of India and Burma (Myanmar). As a people, we have our right to asserts our Nationhood and Independence free from any form of subjugation. As Catholic Christians, we believe in the goodness of every human being and do not doubt that better sense can prevail among conflicting social groups or nations if only each of such groups desire JUST PEACE and commit themselves to arriving at it. The Catholic community, under the aegis of the Catholic Association of Nagaland (CAN), is committed to establishing JUST PEACE and has been humbly and committedly working towards this objective. At this crucial hour: 1. We appeal to the Government of India to sincerely translate its recognition of the Naga Nation and referent from the process of de-humanizing the Nagas because of which JUST PEACE has evaded the two entities of India and Naga Nation for so long. 2. We also appeal to every Naga irrespective of our occupation or affiliation that we are first dignified human beings and dignified Nagas and that we speak a single voice in the most peaceful and unified manner. We believe that people or nation stand to be all the more dignified and honourable by resolving conflicts through respect and recognition of each other’s rights, the result of which will also ensure a common good for both the people or nation. Importance of mother tongue Sir,
We are moving towards a society where the medium of teaching is English and most spoken language is Nagamese, a language that every kid in the state seem to use while conversing with friends/families. Languages are the most important way of keeping our culture alive. Often the direct translation of one language to another might not carry the same essence as it is in the source language. Thus, the best way to thoroughly know about a culture is to know the language. Mother tongue helps us stay connected to our culture and our roots and it should be the duty of every Naga parent to talk to their kids in their mother tongue. Ilivi Jimo, Kohima

Sharad Yadav’s daughter joins Congress ahead of Bihar polls
Subhashini Yadav
NEW DELHI, OCT 14 (PTI): Ahead of the Bihar assembly elections, Loktantrik Janata Dal chief Sharad Yadav’s daughter Subhashini Yadav joined the Congress on Wednesday in the presence of local leaders. Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) leader and former MP Kali Pandey also joined the Congress. Both are likely to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar and are seeking tickets from the Congress party. Subhashini Yadav, a social worker, said she is taking the responsibility of carrying on the fight of
the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in Bihar, as her father Sharad Yadav has always supported it. “I thank Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for giving me this opportunity. Sharad Yadav is not actively taking part in the Bihar elections, as he is not well. He has always supported the ‘Mahagathbandhan’. It is my responsibility to take this fight forward and to take Bihar to greater heights,” she said. K a l i Pa n d e y, w h o switched over from the LJP, said it was a homecoming for him as he had earlier extended support to former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1984 when he was a member of the Lok Sabha. “I feel honoured to have joined the Congress,” he said. In 1980, Pandey won the Bihar Vidhan Sabha election as an independent candidate and then won the 1984 Parliamentary elections from Gopalganj in the state.
GALAXY COACHING CENTRE
Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has instructed the officials of all district administrations to remain on high alert. Police teams and personnel of Disaster Response Force (DRF) of GHMC and NDRF evacuated several families from different localities that were flooded, even as rescue efforts were on in many other areas. The GHMC Mayor, Deputy Mayor, MLAs, and other elected representatives and officials have been ordered to be available in the field and continuously monitor and coordinate relief measures. Rama Rao directed the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy district collectors to coordinate with the police
and Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) department to shift people residing in low-lying areas and on the banks of Nalas and Musi rivers to relief shelters. As several trees and electricity poles were uprooted due to the deluge Rama Rao asked the Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TSSPDCL) officials to coordinate with MAUD and police to ensure power was restored at the earliest. Power supply was suspended in most parts of the state capital on Tuesday as a precaution, the officials said adding the measure was taken for public safety. Traffic jam was witnessed along VijayawadaHyderabad highway and commuters were advised to take alternate routes while police personnel diverted vehicular movement on city outskirts. In its weather forecast, the Met department here said thunderstorm accompanied by lightning is very likely to occur at isolated places over Telangana on Wednesday. Heavy to very heavy rain is very likely to occur at isolated places including Hyderabad on Wednesday and Thursday, it added.
TRP: 2 editors of Republic TV appear before police
MUMBAI, OCT 14 (PTI): Republic TV’s executive editor Niranjan Narayanswamy and senior executive editor Abhishek Kapoor on Wednesday appeared before the Mumbai crime branch for recording statements in the fake TRP racket case. Narayanswamy reached the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) office at 12 noon, while Kapoor, who is based in Delhi, reached around 4 pm, a crime branch official said. Republic TV on October 10 had aired a document which purportedly belonged to Hansa Research Group. The summons issued to Narayanswamy and Kapoor on Tuesday said there were “reasonable grounds to believe” they were “acquainted with certain facts and circumstances of the document”, so it was necessary to record their statements. In a tweet, Republic TV said, “Senior Executive Editor Abhishek Kapoor reaches Crime Branch after being summoned. Republic Media Network will not yield by revealing sources.” The crime branch has so far arrested five persons in the case.
India’s public debt ratio to jump to 90 per cent because of COVID-19: IMF
WASHINGTON, OCT 14 (PTI): India’s public debt ratio, which remarkably remained stable at around 70 per cent of the GDP since 1991, is projected to jump by 17 percentage points to nearly 90 per cent because of increase in public spending due to COVID-19, the IMF said on Wednesday. “In our projections, the increase in public spending, in response to COVID-19, and the fall in tax revenues and economic activity, will make public debt jump up by 17 percentage points to almost 90 per cent of GDP,” Vitor Gaspar, Director of the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department told PTI. “Going forward it is projected to stabilise in 2021, before slowly declining up to the end of the projection period, in 2025. Broadly speaking the pattern of public debt in India is close to the norm around the world,” he said. According to Gaspar, India’s public debt ratio has been remarkably stable since 1991. It is interesting to note that the debt ratio has been stable at around 70 per cent of GDP over the past decade, he said. Responding to a question about his assessment of the fiscal situation of

India, Gasper said India has been an important source of growth in the world since the 1991 economic liberalisation reforms. Real GDP growth averaged 6.5 per cent between 1991 to 2019, and real GDP per capita was multiplied by four over that period. This impressive growth performance helped lift millions of people out of extreme poverty, he said. The extreme poverty rate, measured as the proportion of people whose income is less than USD 1.90 a day at purchasing power parity (the international poverty line), fell from 45 per cent in 1993 to 13 per cent by 2015 (date of the latest full extrapolation by the World Bank available – last full evaluation, based on household surveys, goes back to 2011), he said. India achieved the mil-
lennium development goal of halving poverty by 2015 (from its 1990 level), he said. “India has made astonishing progress in other areas. Education enrollment is nearly universal for primary school. Infant mortality rates have been halved since 2000. Access to water and sanitation, electricity, and roads has been greatly improved,” said the IMF official. According to Gasper, in the near-term, additional fiscal action can and should be deployed as needed to support the poor and the vulnerable. “This should be accompanied by a credible medium-term fiscal consolidation plan that can reinforce market confidence and structural reforms that boost India’s growth potential,” he added. “Going forward, public finances should continue to support growth and development in India. The effects of COVID-19 on health, education, poverty and nutrition render progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals even more urgent. Macroeconomic and financial stability are important necessary conditions for sustainable development,” he said.
Kerala Congress (M) faction decides to walk out of UDF KOTTAYAM (KER), OCT 14 (PTI): Ahead of next year’s Assembly elections, the ruling LDF in Kerala on Wednesday got a shot in the arm as Kerala Congress(M) faction led by Jose K Mani decided to sever its decades old ties with the Congressled UDF and work with the Left front in the state. Party leader Jose K Mani also said he would quit his Rajya Sabha membership, won with the support of the UDF. Announcing his faction’s political position at a press conference here, Jose expressed hope that the LDF leadership will take a decision on his party’s entry
into the ruling front. Jose, son of veteran Kerala Congress (M) leader late K M Mani, hailed the CPI(M)-led front’s efforts to safeguard the secularism in the country. He also said the LDF government in the state was keen to work towards the welfare of the farming community, which is the core base of his party. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the LDF leadership were quick to welcome Jose faction’s decision to cooperate with their front. In a statement, Vijayan said the KC(M) has taken a stand that LDF is the politically correct formation,
ending its 38- year-old association with the UDF. The matters related to the party’s LDF entry will be decided at the front’s meeting, he said. Meanwhile, the UDF leadership flayed the move, saying Jose faction “backstabbed” the Congress-led front, which made him Rajya Sabha member. UDF convenor M M Hassan also said the Jose faction should quit all the parliamentary positions including Kottayam Lok Sabha seat won with the support of the Congress-led front. Justifying his decision to work with the LDF, Jose said the front has been re-

lentlessly fighting against the growing communal forces in the country. Attacking the UDF leadership and a rival Kerala Congress (M) faction led by P J Joseph, Jose said a section in the front “expelled” his faction from the UDF
after a dispute arose over a post in a local body. The UDF humiliated the MLAs and leaders who stood by his late father K Mani, who built the UDF 38 years ago, he said. He also alleged that P J Joseph faction engaged in character assassination of the leaders of his faction. “The UDF leadership supported Joseph’s bid to hijack the Kerala Congress (M). They (UDF leadership) did injustice to us,” Jose alleged. Jose faction’s issues with the UDF leadership aggravated in June this year after it was “ousted” from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in
connection with the tussle over the Kottayam district panchayat chief post. The UDF leadership had later rectified it saying the Jose group was not ousted from the front and it was only temporarily barred from the UDF meeting for refusing to honour an agreement made in public with the coalition front over sharing the Kottayam district panchayat president’s post. “Technically Jose K Mani group is part of the UDF,” its chairman and Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Ramesh Chennithala had said in Thiruvananthapuram recently.

A press statement issued by PAC stated, “Since we are at the threshold of inking final agreement, we anticipate that the State Government under Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio will step down in favour of solution which has been his commitment for the past 17 years and, in which, he has never failed to remind the people of Nagaland while addressing every political or social gathering. New Delhi, Oct 14 (IANS): In a decision that will give a mega push to freight transport, Indian Railways has given permission for the world’s most powerful electric locomotive, manufactured by French giant Alstom along with the Madhepura Electric Locomotives Pvt Ltd, to run freight trains at a speed of 120 kmph. Alstom, in a statement, said that its 12,000 HP electric locomotives have been officially been approved by the Ministry of Railways and the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO) to run freight trains at a maximum speed of 120 kmph. The Indian Railways began inducting the WAG 12B e-locos in May this year. According to Alstom, these electric locos will allow faster and safer movement of heavier freight trains capable of hauling 6000 tonnes at a top speed of 120 kmph. The Indian Railways has planned to deploy these 12,000 HP electric locomotives for operations on major freight routes, including the Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs), where they are expected to increase the average speed of freight trains in India by at least 20-25 kmph.

As India's growth falls, amongst the most in the world, India is on track to fall below Bangladesh in terms of the per capita GDP. India will grow smartly next year, as per IMF. As per the World Economic Outlook report of IMF released on Tuesday,

Stock market expert and Director Enam Holdings, Manish Chokhani tweeted, "Today's special. Both our neighbours marching ahead. We wish them well and hope our achievements meet our own aspirations!". Chokhani added a clipping of Bangladesh overtaking India and China's booming economy and stock markets. The tweet was tagged to business and stock market leaders Samir Arora, Nilesh Shah, Anand Mahindra, Harsh Goenka and Harsh Mariwala. Pakistan, China, Russia win seats on UNHRC; US slams rights body
KABUL, OCT 14 (IANS): At least eight civilians were killed and 25 people wounded in two improvised bomb explosions in Afghanistan on Wednesday, authorities said. In one incident, five children lost their lives and 10 civilians were wounded after a truck they were travelling touched off a pressure-plate Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Kushki Kuhna district of western Herat province, local government confirmed in a statement. The incident occurred at midday Wednesday and the wounded were shifted to a hospital in the district in the northeastern part of provincial capital Herat city, the statement said. “All 15 people aboard the vehicle were affected by the explosion and the district police notified the victims’ relatives. The travelers were on the way to attend a wedding ceremony,” the statement said, blaming Taliban militants for planting the IED. In eastern Laghman province, three civilians were killed and 14 civilians and a police officer were wounded after a sticky IED attached to a police vehicle driving along a road detonated in provincial capital Mehtarlam city earlier in the day, local government spokesman, Assadullah Dawlatzayi told Xinhua.
ISLAMABAD/UNITED NATIONS, OCT 14 (PTI): Pakistan along with China, Russia and Cuba won seats on the UN Human Rights Council despite strong opposition from activist groups over their abysmal human rights records. In a secret-ballot voting in the 193-member UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Pakistan secured 169 votes, Uzbekistan received 164, Nepal 150 and China 139. Saudi Arabia lost the race with just 90 votes. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo slammed the UN body for electing China, Russia and Cuba to the agency tasked with defending human rights. “The election of China, Russia, and Cuba to the UN Human Rights Council validates the US decision to withdraw from the Council in 2018 and use other venues to protect and promote universal human rights.? At #UNGA this year, we did just that,” Pompeo tweeted. “US commitment to human rights is far more than just words. We have identified and punished human rights abusers in Xinjiang, Myanmar, Iran, and elsewhere, and call for all nations to take this moment to recommit to the #UDHR,” he said in another tweet. Last week, a coalition

of human rights groups from Europe, the US and Canada called on UN member states to oppose the election of China, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Cuba and Uzbekistan, saying their human rights records make them unqualified. “The bad news: governments just elected China to the UN Human Rights Council despite its severe repression in Xinjiang, Tibet, and Hong Kong. The good news: the number of governments voting for it declined from 180 last time to 139 now. The fear is melting,” Human Rights Watch executive director Kenneth Roth tweeted after the vote. Pakistan is currently serving on the HRC since January 1, 2018. With its re-election, the country will continue as a member for another three-year term commencing on January 1, 2021. Under the Human Rights Council’s rules, seats are allocated to regions to ensure geographical repre-
sentation. Except for the AsiaPacific contest, the election of 15 members to the 47-member Human Rights Council was all but decided in advance because all the other regional groups had uncontested slates. To be elected, a country needed to obtain the required majority of 97 votes. Since the HRC’s establishment in 2006, this is the fifth time that Pakistan has been elected to the United Nations’ human rights agency. Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan said he was pleased with his country’s re-election to UN Human Rights Council for another 3-yr term. “We remain committed to upholding human rights for all, prioritizing advancement of tolerance and constructive engagement. We stand resolute against Islamophobia and in support of mutual respect,” Khan said. Earlier, the Foreign Office in Islamabad said Pakistan “remains firmly committed to upholding, promoting and safeguarding human rights and fundamental freedoms for all and will sustain its efforts towards ensuring that the HRC’s work is guided by the principles of universality, impartiality, dialogue and cooperation.”
not authorized to speak to the media about military activities. On Monday, American forces said they had carried out several airstrikes in Helmand province in support of Afghan security forces under attack by the Taliban. Col. Sonny Leggett, a spokesperson for the U.S. military in Afghanistan, said Monday that the recent Taliban attacks in Helmand were “not consistent” with a U.S.-Taliban deal signed in February and undermine ongoing
intra-Afghan peace talks. He said the airstrikes do not violate the February deal. Thousands of Afghan civilians have fled Nawa and Nad Ali districts because of the fighting, said Atiqullah, a local community leader from Nawa district, who like many Afghans goes by just one name. “Nothing is left to us, we lost everything, including our home, property and livestock,” he said. He and his family fled to stay with relatives in the city of
Lashkar Gah, Helmand’s provincial capital. “The Taliban have launched attacks against security checkpoints, and they control most parts of Nawa district,” he added. Separately, three civilians were killed and 14 wounded in the eastern province of Laghman by a magnetic explosive device attached to a police vehicle, said Shafiullah Afghanyar, a provincial police spokesman. WASHINGTON, OCT 14 (PTI): US President Donald Trump has said that he felt like a “Superman” after his experimental COVID-19 treatment and boasted about his new immunity to the disease which has claimed the lives of 216,000 Americans. Trump, who tested positive for COVID-19 on October 1 and was admitted to a military hospital for three nights and four days, declared himself cured after he was treated with
an experimental antibody drug cocktail. White House doctors have now cleared him for holding election rallies. Holding his second rally since contracting coronavirus, Trump told a crowd of his supporters packed onto an airport tarmac in Johnstown, Pennsylvania that he felt like “Superman” after the treatment. Tr ump was briefly forced to pause his re-election campaign after he tested positive for
COVID-19 and he returned to the campaign trail from the battleground State of Florida on Monday. Addressing his supporters in Pennsylvania, another battleground State, Trump, 74, thanked the doctors that treated him. “All I know is I took something, whatever the hell it was, I felt good very quickly. I don’t know what it was, antibodies, antibodies. I don’t know. I took it, I said I felt like superman,” Trump said. “Then I said, let me at ‘em. Nah, and I could’ve been here four or five days ago. It’s great, we have great doctors. I want to thank the doctors at Walter Reed and Johns Hopkins, and--great doctors,” he said. Trump said, that “one great thing about being president, if you’re not feeling 100 per cent you have more doctors than you thought existed in the world. I was surrounded with like 14 of them. Where are you from? I’m from this one.

Ryzhikov, who will be the station’s skipper, said the crew will try to pinpoint the exact location of a leak at a station’s Russian section that has slowly leaked oxygen. The small leak hasn’t posed any immediate danger to the crew. “We will take with us additional equipment which will allow us to detect the place of this leak more precisely,” he told reporters. “We will also take with us additional
improved hermetic material which will allow to fix the leak.” In November, Rubins, Ryzhikov and Kud-Sverchkov are set to greet NASA’s SpaceX first operational Crew Dragon mission, bringing NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker, and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency astronaut Soichi Noguchi to the space station aboard the Crew Dragon vehicle. It follows a successful Demo-2 mission earlier this year. The Crew Dragon mission was pushed back from Oct. 31 into November, and no new date has been set yet. The delay is intended to give SpaceX more time to conduct tests and review data from an aborted Falcon 9 launch earlier this month.

elections were held in Kyrgyzstan on October 4 with the participation of 16 political parties. Preliminary results showed that four parties crossed the 7 per cent threshold to enter the Parliament. Some parties which failed to meet the threshold organized nationwide protests the next day, demanding the annulment of the elections and claiming gross violations. Kyrgyzstan’s election commission later annulled the results of the elections after clashes between police and protesters. The commission said on Friday that it will set a time for repeat parliamentary elections by November 6.

the National Academy of Sciences’. “Though it is from the same family of viruses as the betacoronavirus SARSCoV-2 which causes the respiratory illness Covid19 in humans, SADS-CoV is an alphacoronavirus that causes gastrointestinal illness in swine,” said the study authors from the University of North Carolina in the US. The virus causes severe diarrhoea and vomit-
ing and has been especially deadly to young piglets. SADS-COV is also distinct from two circulating common cold alphacoronaviruses in humans, HCoV-229E and HCoVNL63. “While many investigators focus on the emergent potential of the betacoronaviruses like SARS and MERS, the alphacoronaviruses may prove equally prominent -- if not greater -- concerns to

we are more likely to follow the guidelines,” they noted. “I believe that policy makers can use our new knowledge in their efforts to get more people to follow the guidelines - and ultimately save lives,” Pfattheicher added. For the study, published in the journal Psychological Science, the research team have initially tested the relationship between participants’ empathy and their attitude to social distancing. They tested this in two questionnaire-based studies in the US, the UK, and Germany. For example, on a scale from 1 to 5, participants were asked how concerned they are about those who are most vulnerable to the coronavirus. Subsequently, they were asked about the extent to which they themselves
infects lung cells. Cross-protective herd immunity often prevents humans from contracting many coronaviruses found in animals. However, results from the testing done by Edwards and her team suggest that humans have not yet developed such immunity to SADS-CoV. “SADS-CoV is derived from bat coronaviruses called HKU2 which is a heterogenous group of viruses with a worldwide distribution,” Edwards said. It is impossible to predict if this virus or a closely related HKU2 bat strain could emerge and infect human population. “However, the broad host range of SADS-CoV coupled with an ability to replicate in primary human lung and enteric cells demonstrates potential risk for future emergence of infections in human and animal populations,” Edwards noted.

olly Parton doesn’t see herself as “fashionable”. The ‘9 To 5’ hitmaker insists she is not a fashion figure, but instead just chooses outfits based on what “fits” her but for special events, she likes to look “well-dressed and not half-assed”. Speaking about her style in ‘9 To 5’, she shared: “I have never thought of myself as being fashionable. I’ll just tell you what I know about how I look and why I look that way ... I got to dress up like I was a city girl in this film and I’ve never even thought about being fashionable. “I just always wore things that fit me. But I thought, for something as big as a premiere, I needed to be fancy and I didn’t know how to do that.” And discussing her outfit at the film’s premiere, she added: “I thought it was a beautiful dress. I remember feeling really pretty, and I felt like I was well-dressed and not half-assed like sometimes you are. And I just remember that was probably the first time I ever really felt like I was fashionable.” Dolly also shared her love for make up, insisting more is definitely more. Speaking in a new video for Vogue magazine’s Life in Looks YouTube series, she said: “I like to wear a lot of makeup. mpathy for vulnerable people in risk groups motivates others to use face masks and keep distance, which can help prevent the spread of Covid-19, say researchers. “We saw that empathy for the most vulnerable is an important factor, and that it can be used actively to combat the pandemic,” said study author Stefan Pfattheicher from Aarhus University in the UK. “Our results suggest that we need stories of real people suffering. It’s not enough just to tell us that we must keep distance and wear a face mask for the sake of vulnerable citizens in general,” the authors wrote. “If we’re confronted with a specific person who is vulnerable to Covid-19, it is clear that empathy is strengthened, and that
avoid social contact due to the coronavirus. The relationship is clear. The higher the degree of empathy, the greater the focus on reducing social contact. Equally importantly, the study shows that it is possible to induce empathy among people, and thereby also make more people willing to keep social distance and wear face masks. In two experiments, the researchers tested the differences in participants’ willingness to follow the two recommendations, depending on whether they are just informed about the effect of the two initiatives, or whether they are also presented with a vulnerable person. In both experiments, the participants were presented with people who, each in their own way, have been affected by and suffer from the coronavirus. There were also control groups who only received information about the effect of maintaining social distance and wearing face masks. The findings showed that the participants who received the story about people suffering from the coronavirus reported a higher degree of empathy. And also, a greater willingness to physically distance and use face masks. (IANS)
human health given their potential to rapidly jump between species,” said researcher Ralph Baric from the UNC. Baric worked with Caitlin Edwards, a research specialist at the UNC, on the study which suggests humans may be susceptible to spillover of SADS-CoV. Edwards, the study’s first author, tested several types of cells by infecting them with a synthetic form of SADS-CoV to understand just how high the risk of cross-species contamination could be. Evidence from the study indicates that a wide range of mammalian cells, including primary human lung and intestinal cells, are susceptible to infection. According to Edwards, SADS-CoV shows a higher rate of growth in intestinal cells found in the human gut unlike SARSCoV-2 which primarily

The coronavirus strain known as Swine Acute Diarrhoea Syndrome Coronavirus (SADS-CoV), emerged from bats and has infected swine herds throughout China since it was first discovered in 2016. The outbreak of such an illness has the potential to wreak economic havoc on many countries across the globe that rely on the pork industry. Srikanth enters second round of Denmark Open Copenhagen, Oct 14 (IANS): Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth came out with a commanding performance as he registered a straight-games win over England’s Toby Penty in his opening round match at the Denmark Open. Srikanth, the former world number one, defeated Penty 21-12, 21-18 in 37 minutes at the Super 750 event, which has marked the resumption of international badminton after seven months. India’s Shubhankar Dey and Ajay Jayaram on Wednesday lost in straight games to be knocked out of the Denmark Open in the first round. While Shubhankar lost to Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue, Jayaram fell to Danish third seed Anders Antonsen. Lakshya Sen has already reached the pre-quarters with a straight-games
Kidambi Srikanth in action (REUTERS) win over Christo Popov on Tuesday. Sen, who held a 3-1 head to head record against Popov, had defeated the Frenchman 21-9, 21-15 in just 36 minutes to make it to the next round of the Super 750 event. He will face Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus of Denmark for a place in the quarterfinals. The Denmark Open has marked the resumption of the BWF calendar which has been on a halt since March following the outbreak of novel corona-
virus. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) had earlier intended the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup team events to mark the restart of the badminton calendar, but the tournaments were cancelled after several countries pulled out due to safety concerns arising out of the Covid-19 pandemic. The BWF also cancelled the Denmark Masters, which was set to start two days after the end of the Denmark Open.

Contracting COVID-19 was unlike any other setback: Varun Kumar New Delhi, Oct 14 (PTI): Indian hockey team’s drag-flicker Varun Kumar says the feeling of contracting the deadly COVID-19 virus was “unlike any other” setback he had faced in his career and he is happy that he has come out of it. Kumar was one of the six national team hockey players, including captain Manpreet Singh, who had tested positive for the coronavirus at the Sports Authority of India Centre in Bangalore in August. All of them have recovered from the dreaded disease. “As sportsmen, you face a lot of different challenges in your career. There are ups and downs, frustration when you can’t score, disappointment of defeats and joys of winning. But this feeling of having tested positive for Covid-19 was unlike any other,” the youngster said. “I felt like I had a moral responsibility towards everyone around me, to ensure I don’t end up passing it to someone else. And I am really happy that all six of us
could recover well,” added the defender from Punjab. Kumar, who was a part of the FIH Junior World Cup winning India team in 2016, said the SAI and Hockey India ensured that all the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines are followed by the players. “Hockey India and SAI provided us with the best of facilities to tackle this challenge. It was due to their efforts that we managed to survive this unusual storm, and the care we received from all quarters meant that we could eliminate the virus without causing any damage to anyone,” he said in a release. He said the players are now following to the ‘T’ the instructions of chief coach Graham Reid and scientific advisor to return to their best. “We are on the right path, and having resumed sports activities, I feel like I am regaining my rhythm. There is no better feeling than playing hockey, and having been away from it, you get a sense of what you’ve missed out on as well.”
Misbah-ul-Haq steps down as Pakistan’s chief selector
L a h o r e , Oc t 1 4 (IANS): Misbah-ul-Haq on Wednesday resigned from his post as chief selector of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. Misbah said that he wants to focus on his role as head coach of the team, a position he had held jointly with the chief selector’s post. “Coaching is my passion and my ultimate ob-
jective remains to contribute to the development of players and help the side achieve bigger successes. When I was appointed last year, I was offered the coaching role first and then given the option to also head the selection committee, which I had graciously accepted,” Misbah said in a press conference. “With the new Crick-
et Association system in full flow, the chief selector has to be able to watch as much domestic cricket as possible. With a big 24 months now coming up, we have mutually agreed that there is a need for me now to be fully focused on one role.” PCB chief executive Wasim Khan said that the board “wholeheartedly re-
spects” Misbah’s decision. “When he took on the national head coach role, we also required him to take on the chief selector’s role due to circumstances at that point in time,” he was quoted as saying in the PCB’s press release. “As head coach of the national side, he has reassessed his priorities and believes he has a better
chance of producing the desired results by focusing solely on the coaching side. We are very happy to support his thinking on this.”

DC’s brilliant death bowling trumps RR
Dubai, Oct 14 (PTI): Flavour of the season Rahul Tewatia didn’t prove to be third time lucky in what turned out to be an incredible death overs performance by the Delhi Capitals pace attack in their 13-run victory in an IPL game on Wednesday. Anrich Nortje (2/33) was breathtakingly fast bowling in the mid 150 kmph with toe-crushing yorkers while Kagiso Rabada’s (1/28) international experience proved to be pure gold dust leaving rookie Tushar Deshpande (2/37) to defend 21 runs in his debut IPL game, which he did with elan. The result was Rajasthan Royals finishing on 148 for 8 chasing Delhi Capitals’ par score of 161 for 7 as Tewatia couldn’t hit the troika of Rabada, Nortje and Deshpande at all. Royals lost the plot in the last five overs partly due to selfish approach from senior player Robin Uthappa (32 off 27 balls), who needlessly ran-out a genuine match-winner Riyan Parag. While skipper Shreyas Iyer’s shoulder injury would

keep Capitals on tenterhooks, 12 points from 8 games will keep them in good stead as they look to quickly clinch a play-off place. Rajasthan Royals with 6 points from 8 games stay in seventh place and are in danger of missing another play-offs. While DC were
splendid at the death, it was Ravichandran Ashwin’s artistry during the back 10 with clever variations of pace and flight that brought Delhi back in the game. Ashwin finished with figures of 1 for 17 and bowled 10 dot balls out of his 24 balls -- on par with the ever-improving
Nortje. Earlier Shikhar Dhawan and skipper Iyer hit stroke-filled half-centuries but Delhi Capitals lost momentum towards the end to be restricted to 161 for seven after opting to bat first. The last five overs of the Delhi Capitals innings yielded only 32 runs and they lost four wickets, an indication how they missed Rishabh Pant and Shimron Hetmyer. DC had a disastrous start to its innings after opting to bat as it lost Prithvi Shaw off the first ball of the match with a gem of a delivery from Jofra Archer (3/19) that jagged back in after pitching and crashed into the middle stump after getting an inside edge. To make matters worse for DC, Ajinkya Rahane was holed out to Robin Uthappa off Archer at midon an over later. But then skipper Iyer (53 off 43) joined hands with Dhawan (57 off 33) and the duo initially played cautiously before opening up to take DC forward. They shared 85 runs for the third wicket off 55
balls to keep DC’s momentum going after the early jolts. Dhawan looked in great nick from the onset, often finding the boundary with his trademark pulls and shots square off the off side. In the process he scored his 39th fifty in the IPL off just 30 balls but soon after reaching the feat he departed while trying to force the pacer, caught at short third man by Kartik Tyagi off legspinner Shreyas Gopal. His runs came off 33 balls which had six boundaries and two hits over the fence. After Dhawan’s dismissal, Iyer took the onus on himself and upped the ante with some lusty hits and in the process got to his fifty off 40 balls in the 15th over bowled by Jaydev Unadkat, that yielded 17 runs, including two sixes. But soon after, Iyer departed, caught by Archer at long-off off Kartik Tyagi as he went for another big hit. Marcus Stoinis (18) and Alex Carey (14) tried their best to add muscle to the scoreboard but were unsuccessful.

Dhoni fan paints his home yellow, makes thala’s portrait on wall
The freshly painted houe of MS Dhoni. C h e n na i , O c t 1 4 (IANS): A hardcore fan of former India skipper M.S.Dhoni in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district has painted his house in yellow -- the Chennai Super Kings colour in the Indian Premier League. Not only the outer walls are painted in yellow but they also sport the CSK logo “the lion”, the tagline “whistle podu” and also a portrait of Dhoni. Gopikrishnan, the fan,
has also loudly proclaimed that he is an ardent Dhoni fan by painting in bold letters ‘#HOME OF DHONI FAN’ above the entrance of the house. According to reports, Gopikrishnan works in the Middle East and owing to Covid-19, he has returned home. Reports also said he had splashed around Rs 1.50 lakh to paint the CSK colours. Chennai Super Kings, the three-time IPL champions, have however not been able to play
as per expectations in the ongoing 13th edition of the tournament being staged in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) due to Covid-19 pandemic. Out of the eight matches they have played so far, the Men in Yellow have registered wins in only three and are currently placed at the sixth spot in the points table. CSK, who defeated SunRisers Hyderabad on Tuesday night in Dubai, will next face Delhi Capitals on Saturday.

In August, legendary Brazil goalkeeper Tafarrel had termed Neymar as a superstar. In an interview to FIFA.com, he had said of the Paris Saint Germain striker: “A great player. He plays the game in a beautiful way. He’s an incredible dribbler, sets up goals, scores fantastic goals.”

The 28-year old Goan is an experienced campaigner having featured for and captained fellow ISL side FC Goa for the last six seasons, winning the League Shield and the Super Cup. Mandar clocked in 100 appearances for his former side across all competitions, scoring 6 goals and providing 11 assists. The left-back also recently became a full Indian international

I’m looking forward to linking up with my new teammates, and I hope we have a successful year for us and for our fans back home in Mumbai,” Dessai said. Lobera added: “A player of Mandar’s calibre is going to bring in a lot to this team that we’re trying to build here at Mumbai City. He has the traits of a leader amongst many other qualities, which will certainly help us. We are very happy to have him here at Mumbai City and we’re confident that he can be a vital figure for us, both on and off the pitch.”
