ent. Given the scenario, Rio emphasised on supporting the peace process, strengthening the negotiations and facilitating the journey towards achievement of this “one solution at the earliest. He also expressed appreciation of the Centre for acknowledging the “unique history and culture of Naga people and also recognising the Naga movement as political issue. In his speech, Rio also acknowledged the beginning of Naga consciousness since the first world war, to the formation of Naga Club and its memorandum to the British Simon Commission, formation of NNC and subsequent events. Rio pointed out that if Nagas were to achieve progress and realise their aspirations, they need to come together. He said the British used a divide-andrule policy to govern and this was inherited by India and today, this policy has divided Naga society by creating too many groups and organisations having many different opinions and voices. Rio said the way forward was therefore, unity and oneness among Nagas through relentless pursuit for realising genuine peace

and with this spirit, achieve a “political settlement based on Nagas’ historical and political rights and “unique history and position of Nagas. He also acknowledged the sacrifices and sufferings of Naga nationalist organisations, besides expressing gratitude to tribal hohos, massbased civil society groups, church organisations and NGOs for their consistent support and contributions towards the Naga cause and for making constant efforts towards reconciliation and oneness. Rio also appreciated the negotiating parties for signing the Framework Agreement on August 3,2015 and the Agreed Position on November 8,2017. He said the meeting was historic as such an approach will make the voice of Nagas heard by the government of India and Nagas to gain the trust of the international community. Rio said the Naga voice must rise above all other considerations and set aside differences and “hear the cry of our people in order to leave a lasting legacy that would be cherished by generations to come. Meanwhile, tribal leaders, representatives of vari-

ous organisations, political parties and intellectuals in unison have reportedly called for an early solution at the Consultative Meeting held at State Banquet Hall here Thursday. Presidents of various political parties reportedly took the first stage where NDPP president Chingwang Konyak, BJP state unit president Temjen Imna Along, leaders of NPP and NCP spoke at the meeting. The political leaders pointed out the division amongst the Naga tribes and Hohos and had urged for a united stand. Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization slammed the 60 legislators not being united when the government was talking repeatedly about “unity. Asserting that there should not be any bloodshed post-agreement, ENPO called for an acceptable, honorable and inclusive solution. On behalf of the 14 tribes, president Angami Public Organization (APO) Dr. K. Terhuja reportedly read out the representation on the need for peace and early solution and the same was handed over to the chief minister. (Cont’d on p-8)

Speaking to newsmen after the meet, minister PL&C, Land Revenue, Parl. Affairs and chairperson of consultative meet Neiba Kronu and adviser NRE, IT&C, Sc&T and co-chairperson of the meet, Mmhonlumo Kikon said the meeting held “intensive and extensive deliberations over the Naga political issue and ongoing negotiations between Government of India and Naga nationalist organisations. It was a “historic day and the meeting was fruitful, Kikon said. Kikon said many prominent public leaders, intellectuals and others attended the meeting and shared their mind on the Naga political issue. He however clarified that the issue of separate flag and constitution was not discussed. Responding to queries over division among political parties, Kronu claimed that after being assigned by chief

minister Neiphu Rio, he met NPF legislators and said the door was still open for them to work together. He added that the chief minister had even written a letter to NPF to come together stating that it was the desire of PDA government to hammer out all issues. Asked whether the resolutions adopted at the meeting would be shared with New Delhi, Kronu replied that though no decision was taken, the Central government would be intimated. Speaking on the sidelines of the ticket distribution ceremony of NDPPPDA candidate in Kohima, chief minister, Neiphiu Rio said that the consultative meeting on the Naga political issue and the ongoing peace talks was very successful. Rio said that the Centre had asked him to come to Delhi soon after the successful completion of the consultative meeting. Meanwhile, NPCC general secretary, G.K. Tripura scribes condemn attacks on media

Agartala, Oct 15 (IANS): As part of their month-long agitations, journalists in Tripura held a sit-in demonstration here on Thursday to protest against Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Debs reported “threats to the media” last month and attacks on seven reporters in less than a month. The agitations are being spearheaded by the Tripura Assembly of Journalists (TAJ). Journalists from different media houses wearing placards took part in Thursday’s sit-in demonstration that lasted for nearly two hours. On October 2, scribes in Tripura had sported black badges to protest against Deb’s reported “threats to the media” in an official function at Sabroom in southern Tripura on September 11, and attacks on more than seven mediapersons in less than a month. Demanding withdrawal of the Chief Minister’s alleged “threats to the media”, representatives of TAJ, a body comprising editors and

Fr. Stan Swami

Correspondent Shillong, Oct 15: The Friends of the Jesuits, Shillong on Thursday requested Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma to make a strong appeal to the central government to immediately release Fr. Stan Swami on humanitarian ground and squash all the charges framed against him. In a memorandum to chief minister Sangma, the Friends of the Jesuits, Shillong along with all the catholic community of Me-

ghalaya and on behalf of all the tribal population of India also expressed their “deep sense of dismay at the utter silence of the Meghalaya government on the arrest of Fr. Stan Swami” by the National Investigation Agency in connection with the controversial Bhima Koregaon-Elgar Parishad case. “The action of the agency is highly deplorable to say the least considering that an 83 year old has been taken to Mumbai in the midst of the global pandemic and against the Jharkhand government’s directive that those above 60 years of age may not venture in public. Fr. Stan had made it clear to the officials that he is not in a position to undertake such long travel considering his age and the pandemic and is willing to subject himself to questioning over video conferencing,” the memorandum read.

Dey said that after the Chief Minister’s alleged “threat”, more than seven journalists were attacked in different parts of Tripura, but the police did not take any action against the attackers whereas the Chief Minister remained silent. SHILLONG, OCT 15: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is a constituent of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), has maintained that the high electricity bills were an “indirect tax” imposed by the State government on the tribal people. “Soaring electricity bills are an indirect tax imposed on tribal people of the State which is affecting the entire society. As the state cannot impose direct tax on tribals, a new mechanism has been devised through the electricity bills to loot the public in the state,” BJP Meghalaya State Unit, Vice-President, Bernard Marak asserted on Thursday. “It’s an indirect tax imposed on the tribal people who are forced to pay the bills on threats of disconnection and legal action. The consumers are exploited of their rights and the whole society is suffering,” he said. The BJP called upon the chief minister Conrad Sangma, power minister James Sangma and all elected leaders to immediately rectify this problem as “we smell a big scam” in the high electricity bill. “People have no earning during lockdown and many have not received their dues. Above that, the high electricity bills slapped on the public both in urban and rural areas fails any justification. BJP wants good governance in the state and this issue is one of the major problems faced by the public,” the party, which has two

elected representatives in the State assembly, one of whom is a cabinet minister said. “This needs to be immediately looked into by concerned authorities and the minister will be held responsible as we smell a big scam. There are constant power cuts and shut downs every weekend, yet electricity bills scaled very high both in rural and urban areas,” Marak pointed out. “BJP fears there’s a big scam and the high bills are indirect tax imposed on the tribals by the authorities as state cannot impose direct tax on tribals, which has impacted the whole society. BJP wants to bring to the notice of the chief minister and concerned MLAs, including the power minister, that high electricity bills served to the public is one of the major issues which needs to be immediately rectified as the public are being forced to pay unjustified amounts every month,” the BJP leader iterated. “It is found that the bills are not prepared unit wise and the agents serving the bills prepare the bills without checking the meters. The BJP also sees the high electricity bill issue as an exploitation of the locals. We fear this is another corruption which BJP cannot ignore and stay mute to when people are exploited and made to suffer through threats. BJP is appraising this matter to the media because our leaders are not providing any platform to highlight people related issues,” he said. “CM Conrad Sangma should address this

Four BJP workers hurt, vehicles damaged in pre-poll violence Correspondent IMPHAL, Oct 15: At least four BJP workers were injured, in a pre-poll violence incident reported in Manipur’s Churachandpur district where by-poll will be held on one of the assembly constituencies of the district on Wednesday night. Singhat (ST reserved) seat of Churachandpur district was among the five Assembly segments where by-polls will be conducted on November 7. As per report, vehicles in which BJP workers and supporters were travelling were attacked by a group of people armed with sticks and other deadly weapons on their way back from an election campaign at Lhunwang village under Singhat police station last night around 7.30 pm. The report said that the mob first pelted stones towards the vehicles while it was approaching the village and then physically assaulted the workers and supporters.

Many were hit by sticks and other weapons and four sustained injuries which needed medical attention. The vehicles were also damaged partially as they smashed it with sticks and stones. The report said that the workers and supporters of BJP candidate Ginsuanhau were returning from Behiang at the Indo-Myanmar border after an election campaign. H owe ve r, a n o t h e r highly reliable report said that the BJP workers and supporters were attacked by the villagers after they (BJP workers and supporters) allegedly assaulted some workers and supporters of a rival candidate during their visit at Behiang. Some anguished villagers waylaid them to avenge their high-handed attitude towards workers and supporters of other candidates. The by-poll in Singhat Assembly constituency of Churachandpur district was necessitated after Ginsuanhau who was named as BJP candidate for the upcoming

by-poll vacated the seat. He was elected on a Congress ticket from this constituency in 2017 general elections to the state Assembly but resigned from the state Assembly before switching to the saffron fold. Ginsuanhau was among the six Congress legislators who tendered resignations from the state assembly ahead of a confidence motion of the BJP-led coalition government that was discussed by the house of state Assembly on August 10 last. election to the 126-member Assam Assembly is likely to be held in March-April next year. The 2016 elections gave a fractured mandate and no party has got absolute majority. In the current House, the BJP is the single largest party with 60 MLAs, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland Peoples Front (BPF) have 14 and 12 lawmakers respectively. The ruling coalition also has the support of an Independent MLA. The Congress has 23 MLAs, while the AIUDF has 14 members.

Arunachal govt appoints 22 MLAs as advisors to 11 ministers

Itanagar, Oct 15 (IANS): Arunachal Pradesh government has appointed 22 MLAs as advisors to 11 ministers, officials said on Thursday. An official of the Chief Minister’s secretariat said that the advisors, including three women legislators, would assist the ministers and the government in expediting its functioning and monitoring the ongoing

said that they would send a detailed memorandum to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Information and Broadcasting Minister, Press Council of India and various other rights bodies, both in the country and abroad. “We would continue our agitations until the Chief Minister publicly seeks apology for the threat to the

media,” Dey added. The Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) has, however, claimed that Deb’s comments were taken out of context. An official of the CMO said that the present state government in Tripura is committed to freedom of press, rights of the media and the welfare of the journalists. “During the lockdown period, the government had arranged vehicles for transporting newspapers to various districts and subdivisions, increased the journalists’ pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000, provided financial aid to newspaper hawkers, among other welfare initiatives to support the media. But a section of the media is now trying to malign the image of the government by exaggerating facts,” the official said. He said the Chief Minister during a recent meeting with the local television channel owners had categorically stated that his government is always supportive of the media and journalists.

issue immediately as entire State is facing this problem and particularly his constituency Tura is worst affected. People are suffering and being forced to pay the bills under threat of their line being disconnected and legal action taken against the consumers,” Marak said. “On complaints, only excuse the de par tment gave is the defective meter boxes. How can all meters be defective? Are defective meters supplied in entire state? Is that another scam? Some people who use to pay Rs 250 received bills of thousands while others even touched lakh which is impossible to believe. Every alternate day there is a power cut and Saturdays are mostly power dry days due to shutdown in Garo Hills. Poor consumers are pained due to rampant corruption through indirect tax which needs to be rectified,” the BJP said. “People use CFL or LED bulbs these days and rural folks don’t use fridge, rice cookers etc., so how come the bills are high is the question asked by common men? Consumption of power should have been less as now there are various centrally sponsored schemes but it’s just the other way round. Is there some kind of deal with the companies collecting bills or is it the leaders who are imposing the extra rates? The entire state, especially Garo Hills is facing this problem and the attention from the CM and other public leaders is sought to resolve this issue,” the BJP demanded.

projects. An official statement said: “Chief Minister Pema Khandu said these appointments have no financial implication whatsoever to the state exchequer. They (advisors) shall not be entitled to any emoluments, remuneration, perks and facilities.” “The Chief Minister said that these appointments were necessitated to instil the sense of responsibility among

the elected representatives and uphold the spirit of teamwork so that the work culture in the government improves and the works undertaken are expedited and completed timely,” the release added. In a separate notification, the Chief Minister has allocated additional charges of Tax and Excise, State Lotteries, Economic and Statistics to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein.

TRP: SC asks Republic TV to approach Bombay HC

NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court Thursday refused to entertain a plea by the Republic Media Group seeking to quash the summons issued by Mumbai Police in connection with the Television Rating Points (TRP) manipulation case and asked it to approach the Bombay High Court. “We must have faith in high courts,” said a bench comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud, Indu Malhotra and Indira Banerjee. It said the high court has been working throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and the media group should approach it. “Like any other citizen who faces the predicament of an investigation under the Code of Criminal Procedure 1973, the petitioner will have to take recourse to the remedies which are available under the appropriate provisions of law. Hence, the petition under Article 32 of the Constitution is not entertained,” the bench said in its order. Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for the petitioner, sought permission of the apex court to withdraw the plea with liberty to approach the high court. “The writ petition is dismissed as withdrawn

into an alleged crime cannot be urged as a ground for violation of Article 19(1)(a). “Article 19(1)(a) cannot be invoked by the petitioners to side step, thwart and prevent any investigation by the competent investigating agency into alleged fudging of TRP ratings. The right under Article 19(1)(a) is not

Parliamentary panel briefed on TPR issue Supreme Court with the liberty as sought,” the bench said. At the outset, the bench told Salve, “Your client has an office at Worli (in Mumbai)? You may go to the Bombay High Court.” “Enter taining the petition like this without high court hearing the matter sends a message also. We must have faith in high courts. The high court is working throughout the pandemic,” the bench said. The bench also expressed concern that of late, there has been a tendency of the Police Commissioners to give interviews. Mumbai Police has registered a case in the TRP scam and summoned Republic TV’s chief financial officer S Sundaram for in-

vestigation. Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh had claimed that three channels including Republic TV manipulated the TRP. The racket came to light when BARC, an organization which measures TRP, filed a complaint in this regard through Hansa Research Group Pvt Ltd, the police had said. The plea in the apex court was filed by Arg Outlier Media Private Limited, which owns the Republic Media network, seeking quashing of the summons issued by the police. Mumbai Police had earlier filed an affidavit in the top court seeking dismissal of the plea filed by Republic Media group contending that investigation

IAF team in France to make preparations to induct more Rafale jets

Representational image NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): As it prepares to induct a second batch of Rafale jets, the Indian Air Force has sent a team of officials to France to oversee the logistical issues and review the training of a handpicked group of pilots at the Saint-Dizier air base there, officials said on Thursday. The second batch of four Rafale jets is expected to arrive in India in the next four weeks. The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29, nearly four years after India signed an intergovernmental agreement

with France to procure 36 of these aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore. Several teams from the IAF have visited France since January to oversee the progress of the Rafale project including integration of India-specific enhancements and weapons systems, the officials said. The IAF’s Rafale project management team has an office in Paris headed by a Group Captain-rank officer. The team is tasked with overseeing the production timelines as well as coordinating training of the crew. A team of exper ts

India, China talks are going on; do not want to pre-judge: EAM

S Jaishankar NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): India and China are engaged in talks to resolve the border standoff and what is going on is “something confidential” between the two sides, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Thursday. Asked specifically about the outcome of the ongoing talks during an online conclave, the external affairs minister said the “discussions are going on and it is a work in progress.” At the same time, he said there has been a troop build-up along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and in many ways it has no precedence in the recent past. India and China are locked in a military standoff in eastern Ladakh for over five months. “Discussions are on;

what is going on is something confidential between us and the Chinese,” he said when the moderator at the Bloomberg India Economic Forum pressed the minister to give a clear status of the border situation. “There is not ver y much that I am in a position to say in public. I certainly do not want to prejudge it,” he added. Asked about the situation in Tibet as well as developments along the LAC, Jaishankar said, “I do not think we should get into other issues which frankly has nothing to do with the situation currently in Ladakh.” He said relations between India and China improved following signing of a series of agreements since 1993 on maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border. “For the last 30 years, we have built a relationship predicated on peace and tranquillity along the border,” he said. Jaishankar said if peace and tranquillity is not ensured and the agreements signed are not honoured, then that is the “primary cause of disruption”.

headed by assistant chief of air staff (projects) reached France earlier this week to coordinate logistical issues as well as training of pilots and technicians, said the officials. The first batch of Rafale jets was finally inducted into the IAF on September 10. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria on October 5 said the induction of all 36 Rafale jets will be completed by 2023. Ten Rafale jets have been delivered to India so far and five of them stayed back in France for imparting training to IAF pilots. Known for their airsuperiority and precision strikes, the Rafale jets are India’s first major acquisition of fighter planes in 23 year after the Sukhoi jets were imported from Russia. The newly inducted fleet has been carrying out sorties in eastern Ladakh where Indian and Chinese troops are engaged in a bitter border row for over five months.

‘China has no locus standi to comment’: India on Ladakh remark NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (AGENCIES): China has no locus standi to comment on India’s internal matters, New Delhi asserted today, reacting to Beijing’s remarks after the opening of 44 bridges in border areas on Monday. “The Union Territories of Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir have been, are and will remain an integral part of India,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said. “Our position on Arunachal Pradesh has also been made clear several times. Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of India. This fact has also been clearly conveyed to the Chinese side on several occasions, including at the highest level,” he added. China, on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh opening a series of new bridges near the border on Monday, had said it “does not recognize the Ladakh Union Territory illegally set up by India and Arunachal Pradesh”. Zhao Lijian, spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry, had called border infrastructure development “the root cause for tension between the

Officials told a parliamentary panel on Thursday that the existing system to gauge Television Rating Points (TRP) is “not very scientific” and is prone to manipulation, according to sources. Amid a row over an alleged TRP scam, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology was briefed on the issue and other related matters by Press Council of India (PCI) Chairman Justice C K Prasad, Information and Broadcasting Ministry Secretary Amit Khare and other senior officials. The panel, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, met “to hear the views of the representatives of News Broadcasters Association, Press Council of India and Prasar Bharati on the subject ‘Ethical

Standards in Media Coverage’”, among other matters. Sources in the panel said an elaborate and comprehensive discussion was held on fake news, the alleged TRP scam and issues related to media regulation in the current era of convergent technology. To specific questions, officials told the panel members that the current system to ascertain TRP is “not very scientific and accurate”, sources said. The officials suggested that the existing system is outdated and prone to manipulation. Also, it doesn’t give actual picture of viewership as the number of data collection points is very low. Sources said the panel members, however, didn’t mention any specific channel during its proceedings.

Modi pays tribute to former president Kalam

Let Allahabad HC deal with Hathras case, says SC

NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid tributes to A P J Abdul Kalam, saying India can never forget his indelible contribution towards national development, be it as a scientist or the country’s president. Kalam served as the 11th president of India between 2002-07 and earned the respect and admiration of people and political parties across the spectrum for his simple living and nonpartisan conduct. He is also credited with opening the doors of the Rashtrapati Bhavan to the masses and came to be affectionately called the ‘People’s President’. He continued with his quest to guide and inspire the new generation with his speaking tours across the country after his term was over. On his 89th birth anniversary, Modi tweeted, “Tributes to Dr. Kalam on his Jayanti. India can never forget his indelible contribution towards national development, be it as a scientist and as the President of India. His life journey gives strength to millions.”

NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): The Supreme Court Thursday said the Allahabad High Court be allowed to monitor the Hathras case in which a Dalit girl was allegedly brutally raped and died of injuries. The top court, which was hearing a PIL and several intervention pleas of activists and lawyers, was told that no fair trial was possible in Uttar Pradesh as the investigation has been allegedly botched up. Allaying the apprehension, a bench headed by Chief Justice S A Bobde, said “Let the high court deal with it. We are here if there is any problem.” Besides Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, the hearing saw battery of senior advocates like Harish Salve, Indira Jaising and Siddharth Luthra appearing for various parties. There were other lawyers who wanted to argue but the apex court said “We don’t need assistance of the whole world”. The hearing also witnessed deliberations that in no case the victim’s identity be disclosed and her family members and witnesses be

given full security and protection. The lawyer, appearing for the victim’s family, demanded that the proceedings of the case be shifted out of Uttar Pradesh to a court in the national capital. The apprehension of not having the fair trial in the state was also raised by activist-lawyer Indira Jaising who also made submissions on witness protection. At the outset, the Solicitor General referred to recent affidavit filed by the Uttar Pradesh government which gave details about the security and protection provided to the victim’s family and witnesses in the case. The state government

GOVERNMENT OF NAGALAND KOHIMA : NAGALAND

which has already transferred the case to the CBI and has given consent to monitoring by the apex court had filed the affidavit after the top court sought details on witness protection and on whether the victim’s family has chosen a lawyer. Referring to the compliance affidavit, Mehta said victim’s family has informed that they have engaged lawyer and they have also requested that government advocate should also pursue the case on their behalf. Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for DGP of Uttar Pradesh, said that a request has been

made before the bench that CRPF should be deployed for security of witnesses. “Whoever your lordships feel, can give protection,” Salve said, adding that it should not be construed to be any reflection on the state police. Mehta said, “the state is completely non-partisan”. During the hearing before the bench, also comprising Justice A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian, advocate Seema Kushwaha, appearing for the victim’s family, said they want that after investigation, the trial be held in a court in Delhi. She said that CBI should be asked to submit the status report of investigation directly in the apex court. Mehta said factual position is that the state government had already said it has no objection and anybody can conduct the probe and CBI has taken over the investigation on October 10. The law officer said that victim’s identity should not be revealed in any manner as it is not permissible under the law.

The government gives special attention to improving infrastructure in border areas for economic development and to meet India’s strategic and security requirements.” New Delhi said it hoped “countries will not comment on India’s internal matters, as much as they expect the same of others”. As for restoring peace and tranquility in border areas, the foreign ministry spokesperson said, it was best achieved by “scrupulously following all agreements in their entirety”. The new bridges, including eight in Ladakh and eight in Arunachal Pradesh, will facilitate faster movement of troops and weapons closer to the border, say officials. Indian and Chinese troops have been locked in a face-off in eastern Ladakh since May and tension peaked in June when 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the line of duty in a clash with the Chinese at Galwan Valley. Last month, shots were fired in the air more than once as the two armies came face to face at Pangong Tso.

Bid for votes

ypolls to two assembly constituencies- 14 Southern Angami-I and 60 Pungro-Kiphireslated for November 3, could witness a straight fight between the ruling Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) and the candidates set up by the opposition parties. Ruling NDPP, the major coalition partner in the PDA, has set up its candidate for the 14 Southern Angami-I constituency. NDPP won the seat in 2018 but which fell vacant following the death of sitting MLA and Speaker Vikho-o Yhoshü. The NPF will contest the 14 Southern Angami-I assembly seat and cede the 60 Pungro-Kiphire assembly constituency to the Congress. For the other seat- 60 PungroKiphire assembly constituency- the BJP has set up its candidate for which it had unsuccessfully contested in the 2018 assembly election as part of the pre-poll seat sharing arrangement with the NDPP. The NPF had won the seat in 2018 but fell vacant after the party’s sitting MLA passed away. Thus, while NDPP will seek to retain the 14 Southern Angami-I held by the party, the NPF will not seek to retain the seat. The ruling PDA has more resources and advantage as the ruling coalition. Both NDPP and BJP have strong grass roots organisations. It is not clear why the NPF has decided to not contest to retain the 60 Pungro-Kiphire seat since the party had won the seat thrice-2008,2013 and 2018. Earlier the seat used to be a Congress bastion. The BJP has made some inroads into eastern Nagaland from where it had four seats. The bypolls are going ahead despite earlier expectations that they could be kept on hold due to the expected Naga political solution. It also indicates that the expectation could wait till the bypolls. Elections in Nagaland are very expensive and which have left many candidates in economic tatters. Worse for the losers if they did not belong to a ruling party. However even losing candidates of the ruling party cannot expect to recoup their expenditures that early. The byelections will continue to be very expensive for parties. It may be recalled that in the 2013 bypoll to the 26 Aonglenden assembly constituency, the ruling NPF spared no efforts nor left any stone unturned materially, physically and officially to defeat veteran Naga politician Dr.S.C.Jamir of the Congress, who was planning to re-enter state politics after his long stint as governor of several states. That byelection probably still holds the record for the highest ever expenditure for any constituency in the state. The spending power of the Congress in particular may not even come anywhere that of the ruling PDA. However, in politics nothing is certain till the last vote is cast and counted. Be that as it may, the main issue that has plagued elections is blatant use of money to buy votes. An overwhelming number of those who win were helped by money and this is the worry that had been raised over the years including muscle power and also abuse of authority. The winners may have a merry Christmas while the losers will have a blue Christmas. Also, the ‘clean election’ campaign launched by the NBCC since 2012 has not exactly paid dividends and the church in particular needs to reassess its failures stemming from over optimism that merely preaching against ‘election evils’ would be a breakthrough.

He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world. —1 John 2:2 The key to the missionary’s message is the propitiation of Christ Jesus— His sacrifice for us that completely satisfied the wrath of God. Look at any other aspect of Christ’s work, whether it is healing, saving, or sanctifying, and you will see that there is nothing limitless about those. But— “The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”— that is limitless (John 1:29). The missionary’s message is the limitless importance of Jesus Christ as the propitiation for our sins, and a missionary is someone who is immersed in the truth of that revelation. The real key to the missionary’s message is the “remissionary” aspect of Christ’s life, not His kindness, His goodness, or even His revealing of the fatherhood of God to us. “…repentance and remission of sins should be preached…to all nations…” (Luke 24:47). The greatest message of limitless importance is that “He Himself is the propitiation for our sins….” The missionary’s message is not nationalistic, favoring nations or individuals; it is “for the whole world.” When the Holy Spirit comes into me, He does not consider my partialities or preferences; He simply brings me into oneness with the Lord Jesus. A missionary is someone who is bound by marriage to the stated mission and purpose of his Lord and Master. He is not to proclaim his own point of view, but is only to proclaim “the Lamb of God.” It is easier to belong to a faction that simply tells what Jesus Christ has done for me, and easier to become a devotee of divine healing, or of a special type of sanctification, or of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. But Paul did not say, “Woe is me if I do not preach what Christ has done for me,” but, “…woe is me if I do not preach the gospel!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). And this is the gospel— “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

Bharat Ratna : Cong’s secular Brahmins Vrs BJP’s Hindutva Brahmins

B

(While it’s debatable who deserves India’s highest civilian award, what seems to be working in favour of P.V. Narasimha Rao and S.P. Balasubrahmanyam is their caste).

harat Ratna, the countr y’s highest civilian award, was instituted to recognise contributions to politics, science, education, and other areas. There is now a loud chorus demanding Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, for former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao and musician-singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam. While it’s a matter of debate who deserves the Bharat Ratna, what seems to work in favour of both Rao and SPB is something else: caste. Both were Brahmins. It tells us something that the list of recipients of the State award, so far given to 46 Indians and two foreigners (Abdul Ghaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela), largely includes Dwijas, or more specifically, Brahmins. No Bharat Ratna has yet emerged from the groups engaged in foundational tasks such as farming and labour, which made this productive nation what it is today. Earlier, the Telugu Desam Party had tried to raise the pitch for Bharat Ratna for TDP founder and former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N.T. Rama Rao, a Kamma leader, but the demand never could gather pace because he didn’t get the kind of attention from the national media that his contemporaries did. Caste, aside: Of the 46 Indian Bharat Ratnas, 29 are Brahmins, five Muslims, four Kayasthas, three Shudras, and one from each of the following groups — Dalit, Bania, Khatri, Parsi, Christian. The caste of Bhupen Hazarika, the last recipient, could not be

located from any source. Of the four women Bharat Ratna awardees, three are Brahmins and one Christian. It goes to suggest that without Brahmins, who comprise about 4 per cent of India’s population, perhaps this country would not have had enough people worthy to be awarded the Bharat Ratna. Does the list of recipients tell us that the Indian State has practised an unbiased, honest, caste-free selection of Ratnas from the dust of India? The dust of the nation mainly consists of Shudras, Dalits and Adivasis. With more than half of Indian population comprising Shudras, only three could be found worthy of Bharat Ratna in more than 66 years of the award’s history; of the 18 per cent Dalits, just one — Dr B.R. Ambedkar; and of the 7 per cent Adivasis, none. Vallabhai Patel was recognised as a Ratna only in 1991, along with Rajiv Gandhi. Before Patel, only two Shudras were awarded Bharat Ratna — K. Kamaraj and M.G. Ramachandran (both former chief ministers of Tamil Nadu). Political choices : The Bharat Ratna started being awarded in 1954. That year, three living Brahmins — C. Rajagopalachari, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and C.V. Raman — were recognised. All three of them, in their sixties, were still relatively young. And hailed from Tamil Nadu. The federal government never established any principles based on which a Bharat Ratna could be selected or recognised from

across the country. Some were given the award when they were in a position to influence the selection. Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi got the Bharat Ratna when they were prime ministers. Some were awarded a long time after their death (Ambedkar in 1990 and Patel in 1991). A semi-literate K. Kamaraj, from the Nadar community; C.V. Raman, a physicist; Amartya Sen with a PhD from a foreign university; and non-resident Indians — Bharat Ratna winners’ list looks like the power in Delhi adopting a pick and choose method. Literary talents are not so significant. Many Bharat Ratna awardees have not written anything in their life. Who is selected for Bharat Ratna depends on the power in Delhi and not in the states. One could be a chief minister of a state for 34 years (Jyoti Basu) and not be considered as a Ratna of Bharat. And so, what makes someone eligible for India’s highest civilian award remains unknown all times, though, it has been clear that the awardees are selected by the ruling political class depending on the person’s caste and on the political benefits the selection could reap for the government. Patel was recognised as a Bharat Ratna 41 years after his death; Ambedkar was recognised 34 four years after his death, when the government of V.P. Singh — one that believed in social justice — came to power in Delhi, in 1990. Chaudhary Charan Singh, an Uttar Pradesh Jat, despite all his peasant

leadership and former prime minister status, could never get it. In fact, both Ambedkar and Nelson Mandela, a leader of global stature who fought against apartheid and the liberation of Blacks in South Africa, were given the Bharat Ratna by the V.P. Singh government. But in all likelihood, V.P. Singh himself may never get the award, at least not until a pro-Mandal prime minister takes charge at the Centre. And this does not seem to be happening in the near future. RSS-BJP exploiting flaws: Successive Congress governments played Brahminical politics in the name of secularism, pluralism and diversity. Now, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are brazenly playing casteist politics because they believe in the varna dharma (hierarchical system) and parampara (tradition). Just what happened to social diversity and plurality that is often talked about in the context of Hindutva communalism? If we look at the list of Bharat Ratna awardees after the RSS-mentored BJP gained control of the federal government in 1999 and then again since 2014, except Bismillah Khan and Bhupen Hazarika (both musicians), Bharat discovered only Brahmin Ratnas — from Gopinath Bordoloi to Nanaji Deshmukh. The shift from the Congress party’s ‘secular’ Brahmin Ratna picks to the RSS/ BJP’s Hindutva Brahmin Ratna picks has some ideo-

logical dimension. Caste and ideology both are convergent and contending factors when it comes to picking Bharat Ratna. What remains constant is the Brahmin Ratna. So far, no Communist, whether Brahmin, Muslim or Christian, has been awarded the Bharat Ratna. During the entire Congress rule, Indian Communists held a strong secular umbrella over the party’s head but none from that camp was considered worthy of the prize. Even Ram Manohar Lohia, despite being a prominent national leader hailing from the powerful Bania community, was never considered for the award. Of course, we cannot imagine this will change in the RSS-BJP era. The long list of denials: Brahminisation of the Bharat Ratna started with the first selection in 1954. If modern Indians who contributed to the Indian Renaissance and socioeducational reform of the country were considered eligible, then Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Jyotirao Phule and Narayana Guru should have got the award. M.K. Gandhi’s name was avoided after it was held that he was above the award. To this day, no Adivasi has received the Bharat Ratna. Why? We do not know. Birsa Munda and Komaram Bheem were never seen as worthies, just as no OBC has so far been. BP Mandal, who wrote the Mandal Commission Report, is never seen as a Bharatiya worthy of the award. The Congress alienated the most powerful Shudras,

who subsequently launched regional parties and became anti-Congress in so many ways. The list of Bharat Ratna is one indicator of their alienation. The RSSBJP today are doing the same thing and justifying it using the same logic. This brings us to the argument of the Dwija intellectuals that caste should not be the basis for any selection in a democratic, secular republic. But the Dwijas never saw caste when 29 Brahmins, four Kayasthas, one Bania and one Khatri got the Bharat Ratna award. Most names are picked from the freedom movement, as if it was a Dwija movement. No nation can progress with this kind of highend casteism. The Bharat Ratna awardee list does not show any social inclusiveness or diversity at all. The Congress’ inclusiveness was confined to only accommodating Muslims. The party grossly neglected Shudras/OBCs/Dalits and Adivasis. The tendency to promote high-class politicians but not regional and local forces created a huge caste and community gap. The second channel of promotion in the awarding of Bharat Ratna — cinema and music — are also Dwijadominated areas. But today, caste consciousness has reached a different level in India. Everything is being watched. New interpretations of caste are underway not only in India but globally too. Will things change in the future? We can only hope. Kancha Ilaiah Shepherd

he public of Nagas in particular and the adjacent neighboring states of Nagaland have being continuously throwing its views and its probabilities of PEACE ACCORD 2015 in their own wishful angle of thoughts. The direction of the Accord 2015 frame work agreed in principle by both party were viewed very seriously for fear of hijacking the whole Naga political unique history by a particular NPG (NSCN (IM). This fear psychosis creeps in the public mind because the Nagas as a whole could not draw the same line of conclusion in so far as the political right of self determination is concerned. The diversion of different school of thoughts and its ideologies were too wide and it is very difficult to bridge the gap because of ego and selfpride. Slashing the mud to each other in the line of one’s own group interest became the yard stick of measurement and it is used for quite some time. It never comes closer with the span of time rather drifting far and more distance just because Nagas at this juncture cannot rely on each other. Because of the past bitter experiences faced by one and all of Nagas in various sphere of life attributed to this extend and we cannot blame others but ourselves for not sorting out the meeting point through sharing and exchange of our own common views. The disease of discontentment and diversion of our versions with the change of time and generations etc still very much existed in present Naga society. The clever & cunning persons in the Naga society have been publicly recognized and regarded as the

winner without digging out the reality based on truth. Be it in Nagaland state politic or Naga political movements various groups; the approaches towards a lasting solution is far illusive and repel each other. The upper hierarchy of the various controlling authorities; never take heed to its genuine and real problem and go round in circumference line without touching its core issue. It so happened because the record of snatching the running ball from each other’s hand secretly and steadily for several times and miserably failed to score the targeted goal through much interference and missed many opportunities might be the reason. This prick of inner feelings of one another still available in the Naga mind set is very dirty and not congenial in a civilized society. Therefore having a clear vision for the Naga society is not spelt out and all people close their mind to reveal the truth not to antagonize each other directly but always grumble behind the scene. This testing of each other just to collect negative points in the peripheral outer line of actual issue makes a lot of differences. This play of critic role all the time or in other words the devil advocate channel all the time do not play a healthy role to give a positive impacts . The habitual uses of this criticism tactic in all dealings make the whole population very hollow and no admiration for each other even among the generation to come. Sand rate issue: 12 mahaldars react to SMSA hamper the business between the seller (12 Genuine Mahaldars of Assam) and the buyers (ASSTOAD). The 12 genuine sand mahaldar, Jamuna River, under Dokmoka Forest Range, Karbi Anglong said they have “nothing to do with the claims and objection on the news item of SMSA, Manja, Karbi Anglong”, as they neither work under the banner of SMSA, Mania nor come under any sand related organisation. The 12 mahaldars also expressed surprise over what they called as “flip flop attitude” of SMSA and two sand unions of Dimapur and Chumukedima and their contradictory statements. The 12 mahaldars stated that on October 6, 2020, SMSA and two unions claimed that they have fixed the rate at Rs. 42 per cft, but the next day they claimed that the rate has not been fixed. However, on October 15, 2020 they again reclaimed their own statement that rate has been fixed at Rs.42 per cft. Therefore, the 12 mahaldars stated that as decided and agreed upon in

toto with ASSTOAD they would “not entertain any third party to hamper our agreement”, adding that the sand rate fixed at Rs. 32 per cft at the source in Assam still stands. 70 sand stockists laud ASSTOAD: 70 sand stockists under Padum Pukhuri village, Darogapathar village and 3rd Mile to 6th Mile Dimapur have extended appreciation to Assam Sand Suppliers and Truck Owners’ Association Dimapur (ASSTOAD) and 15 genuine government sand mahaldars of Assam for fixing the sand rate at Rs 32 per cfty at the source. In a press release, Hovikhe and Nito, on behalf of 70 sand stockists, said that fixing the sand rate was a great relief to the sand stockists at a trime when pandemic has badly affected the economy of the world. 70 sand stockists have affirmed to “continue to do business with whenever quotes the lower price is Rs 32 per cft and not Rs 42 per cft.” They also reaffirmed to continue to be under the village councils of those areas and not under any stand stockist union in Dimapur.

Tep said office bearers of both NMA and Naga Hoho were “just working” without following their respective constitutions. Tep also said the 14 Naga tribes expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the consultative meet. NH: Earlier, Naga Hoho walked out at the first session, after its president HK Zhimomi said he expected to get the first opportunity to speak, but was denied the opportunity. Talking to media persons, Zhimomi said he had come with “positive mind” despite knowing the sharp division amongst the Nagas. He also asked how could an appeal be made to NSCN (I-M) and 7 NNPGs to unite when there was dis-

unity among the Nagas? Also NSF delegates reportedly left the venue while the meeting was at its conclusive stage. When queried, the NSF president Ninoto Awomi refused to comment. Kikon, however, said that the outcome of the meeting would be communicated to NGBF. On Naga Hoho staging a walk-out, Kikon explained that the meeting was divided into two session (pre and post-lunch). NH was allotted time post-lunch, which was also made known at the meeting, he said. If they (NH) had any doubts about their slot, they could have asked the officials present at the meeting, Kikon said.

surpassing China’s projected growth rate of 8.2 per cent, the IMF said in its latest ‘World Economic Outlook’ report. Released ahead of the annual meetings of IMF and the World Bank, the report said global growth would contract by 4.4 per cent this year and bounce back to 5.2 per cent in 2021. America’s economy is projected to contract by 5.8 per cent in 2020 and grow by 3.9 per cent the next year, IMF said. China is the only country, among the major economies, to show a positive growth rate of 1.9 per cent in 2020, it said. IMF in its report said that revisions to the forecast are particularly large for India, where GDP contracted much more severely than expected in the second quarter. “As a result, the economy is projected to contract by 10.3 per cent in 2020, before rebounding by 8.8 per cent in 2021,” it said. In 2019, India’s growth rate was 4.2 per cent. Last week, the World Bank said India’s GDP this fiscal is expected to contract by 9.6 per cent.

Jindal, said,”Phase one of the ‘Jindal Saathi’ campaign has by far exceeded our expectations. We’ve been able to bring down the share of counterfeit supplies in the market from 25 per cent last year to 20 per cent this year.” As the industry leader, Jindal Stainless takes it as its responsibility to safeguard the benchmarked international quality standards set by the company and its partner manufacturers, he added. “The counterfeit industry not only harms us but also the MSMEs operating in this segment which constitutes nearly 75 per cent of the P&T market,” Jindal said. In July 2019, Jindal Stainless launched ‘Jindal Saathi’, a co-branding programme with nearly 100 memorandum of understanding (MoU) partners to guard the domestic market from counterfeit products and to ensure supply of right quality decorative stainless steel P&T to end-customers. As part of the initiative, standardised seals were created featuring the logos of Jindal Stainless and its MoU partners, the grade of stainless steel and respective MoU numbers.

terms, India’s per capita GDP in 2020 is estimated by IMF at USD 6,284 as compared to USD 5,139 for Bangladesh, according to the sources. Under UPA 2, the sources said that it had increased from Rs 65,394 in 2009-10 to Rs 78,348 in 2013-14 which is an increase of 19.8 per cent. The Inter national Monetary Fund (IMF) has estimated India’s GDP to grow at 8.8 per cent in 2021, twice that of Bangladesh at 4.4 per cent, they added. According to IMF, India is set to drop below Bangladesh in terms of per capita Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the economy is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year. IMF’s forecast for India -- a huge downward revision from its previous prediction in June -- is also the biggest contraction projected among major emerging markets amid the COVID-19 pandemic. However, India is likely to bounce back with an impressive 8.8 per cent growth rate in 2021, thus regaining the position of the fastest growing emerging economy,

NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (IANS): Jindal Stainless on Thursday announced the launch of the second phase of its nationwide pipe and tube (P&T) co-branding programme ‘Jindal Saathi 2.0’. The second phase of this initiative comes after a successful first phase launched by the company in July last year, to address the issue of counterfeiting in the stainless steel P&T market, the company said in a statement. Jindal Stainless aims to increase its market share to 60 per cent in the P&T segment by the end of Financial Year (FY) 2021-22. As per the company, the first phase of the initiative took the company’s market share in this segment from 44 per cent to 50 per cent. In the second phase Jindal Stainless has expanded the scope of the programme to 270 cities across the country from 28 cities in phase one. NEW DELHI, OCT 15 (PTI): India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in terms of purchasing power parity was 11 times more than that of Bangladesh in 2019, government sources said on Wednesday as they played down IMF projections of India slipping below the neighbouring nation on per capita GDP this year. Earlier in the day in a tweet, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the government over IMF growth projections showing Bangladesh closing in on India in terms of per capita GDP this year and described it as a “solid achievement” of six years of BJP’s “hate-filled cultural nationalism”. T h e g o ve r n m e n t sources, on their part, emphasised that under the Modi government, the per capita GDP has increased from Rs 83,091 in 2014-15 to Rs 1,08,620 in 2019-20, representing an increase of 30.7 per cent. Oxford scientists develop fiveminute COVID-19 antigen test

LO N D O N, O C T 1 5 (AGENCIES): Scientists from Britain’s University of Oxford have developed a rapid COVID-19 test able to identify the coronavirus in less than five minutes, researchers said on Thursday, adding it could be used in mass testing at airports and businesses. The university said it hoped to start product development of the testing device in early 2021 and have an approved device available six months afterwards. The device is able to detect the coronavirus and distinguish it from other viruses with high accuracy, the researchers said in a preprint study. “Our method quickly detects intact virus particles,” said Professor

Achilles Kapanidis, at Oxford’s Department of Physics, adding that this meant the test would be “simple, extremely rapid, and cost-effective”. Rapid antigen tests are seen as key in rolling out mass-testing and re-opening economies while the coronavirus is still circulating, and those that are already in use are faster and cheaper but less accurate than existing molecular PCR tests. Siemens Healthineers on Wednesday announced the launch of a rapid antigen test kit in Europe to detect coronavirus infections, but warned that the industry may struggle to meet a surge in demand. Although the Oxford platform will only be ready next year, the tests could help manage the pandemic in time for next winter. Health officials have warned that the world will need to live with coronavirus even if a vaccine is developed.

distribution of effective therapies and vaccines to ensure that all countries have access,” Georgieva said. She urged countries to continue support for workers and businesses until a durable exit from the health crisis. “We have seen global fiscal actions of USD 12 trillion. Major central banks have expanded balance sheets by USD 7.5 trillion. These synchronised measures have prevented the destructive macro financial feedback we saw in previous crises,” she said. “But almost all countries are still hurting, especially emerging market and developing economies.

participation,” she said. Georgieva said that to reap the full benefits of sound economic policy, they must invest more in people. That means protecting the vulnerable. It also means boosting human and physical capital to underpin growth and resilience, she argued. “Just as the pandemic has shown that we can no longer ignore health precautions, we can no longer afford to ignore climate change...We focus on climate change because it is macrocritical, posing profound threats to growth and prosperity. It is also people-critical and planet critical,” said the IMF MD. The IMF, she said, is working tirelessly to support a durable recovery, and a resilient future as countries adapt to structural transformations brought on by climate change, digital acceleration and the rise of the knowledge economy. Since the pandemic began, IMF has committed over USD 100 billion and still has substantial resources from its USD 1 trillion in lending capacity, she said.

LONDON, OCT 15 (PTI): The UK capital, London, and its bordering county of Essex, currently in Tier 1 “medium” coronavirus risk level, will be moved to Tier 2 “high” risk level of restrictions from Saturday as infection rates continue to surge in these areas, the government announced on Thursday. The tougher measures in Tier 2 impose a ban on mixing between different households indoors – in homes and pubs, bars and restaurants – and the Tier 1 “rule of six” on gatherings outdoors continues to apply. Businesses and venues can continue to operate under COVID-secure conditions within these restrictions, with businesses selling food or drink on their premises required to close between 10pm and 5am. The tougher restrictions will come into force from Saturday. “In London, infection rates are on a steep upward path, with the number of

The seven-day average case rate stands today at 97, rising sharply,” UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in a statement tabled in the House of Commons. “We know from the first peak, the infection can spread fast and put huge pressures on the NHS (National Health Service) so we must act now to prevent the need for tougher measures later on. Pro-democracy protesters occupy a main road as they gather at a junction in Bangkok, Thailand, Oct. 15. (AP/PTI)

The protest Wednesday in Bangkok’s historic district, not far from glittering temples and royal palaces, was the third major gathering by student-led activists who have been pushing the boundaries of what is considered acceptable — and legal — language by publicly questioning the role of Thailand’s monarchy in the nation’s power structure. Thailand’s royal family has long been considered sacrosanct and a pillar of Thai identity. King Maha Vajiralongkorn and other key member of the royal family are protected by a lese majeste law that has

Sooronbai Jeenbekov

“I don’t want to go down in history as a president who shed blood and shot at his own citizens.” Jeenbekov said the situation in Bishkek “remains tense” and that he didn’t want to escalate those tensions. He urged opposition politicians to get their supporters off the streets and “bring peaceful life back to the people.” Parliament must officially approve his resignation, and Speaker Kanat Isayev, who was appointed earlier this week, told local media it would meet Friday to consider it. Raising the possibility of further political turmoil, Isayev told the Kyrgyz news outlet 24.kg that he doesn’t feel he has the right to take over the presidency since the current parliamentary term is about to end. The country of 6.5

people on the border with China was plunged into chaos following an Oct. 4 parliamentary election whose results a victory for pro-government parties. The opposition said the balloting was tainted by vote-buying and other irregularities. Protesters then took over government buildings, looting some offices, and the Central Election Commission nullified the election. The opposition then announced plans to oust Jeenbekov and form a new government. Jeenbekov kept a low profile in the first few days after the vote, using the infighting among protest leaders to dig in. He introduced a state of emergency in Bishkek, which was endorsed Tuesday by parliament, and authorities deployed troops to the capital and introduced a curfew. The move eased tensions in the city, where residents feared the violence and vandalism that accompanied previous uprisings and had been forming vigilante groups to protect their property. Stores and banks that were closed last week have reopened.

Thailand declares emergency after unprecedented protest BA N G KO K , O C T 1 5 (AP): Thai authorities declared a strict new state of emergency for the capital on Thursday, a day after a student-led protest against the country’s traditional establishment saw an extraordinary moment in which demonstrators heckled a royal motorcade. After the pre-dawn declaration, riot police moved in to clear out demonstrators who after a day of rallies and confrontation had gathered outside Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha’s office to push their demands, which include the former general’s stepping down, constitutional changes and reform of the monarchy. Several top leaders of the protest movement were taken into custody, with one later declaring on his Facebook page that he had been denied access to a lawyer and was being forced onto a helicopter and taken to a city in the country’s north. Police said they had made 22 arrests. The text of the emergency declaration said it was needed because “certain groups of perpetrators intended to instigate an untoward incident and movement in the Bangkok area by way of various methods and via different channels, including causing obstruction to the royal motorcade.”

MOSOW, OCT 15 (AP): Kyrgyzstan’s embattled president said Thursday he was resigning following protests over a disputed parliamentary election, the third time in 15 years that a leader of the Central Asian country has been ousted by a popular uprising. Protesters in the capital of Bishkek celebrated the decision by President Sooronbai Jeenbekov, but it’s not clear if it will quell the unrest that has gripped the country since last week. The demonstrators quickly demanded that parliament be dissolved and that its speaker, who is next in the order of succession, also resign. Jeenbekov, who came under pressure to step down from the protests and some opposition politicians including the new prime minister, had dismissed calls to resign only a day earlier. But in a statement released by his office, he said that he feared violence if he stayed in power, noting that protesters were facing off against the police and the military. “In this case, blood will be shed. It is inevitable,” the statement said.

regularly been used to silence critics who risk up to 15 years in prison if deemed to have insulted the institution. The protest — held on the anniversary of a 1973 student-led uprising against a military dictatorship — was complicated by the presence of royalist counter protesters who had gathered both to show support for the government and to greet the royal family as they travelled to and from a religious ceremony in the area. That led to a moment captured in photos and video that circulated widely on social media in which what

appeared to be protesters gestured and shouted just meters (feet) from the royal motorcade. Such actions are unprecedented in Thailand, where those waiting for a royal motorcade regularly sit on the ground or prostrate themselves. Some experts say a line may have been crossed. “What seemed to be a low-boil stalemate that the Prayuth government was managing with reasonable success has now, following the incident involving the procession of the queen’s motorcade down a street in which an active protest was under way and the

arrests of protest leaders, become a full-blown crisis,” said Michael Montesano, coordinator of the Thailand Studies Program at the ISEAS-Yusof Isak Institute in Singapore. “Unlike even 48 hours ago, the country is in dangerous territory now.” Government spokesman Anucha Buraphachaisri announced Thursday morning that the prime minister had ordered police to take strict action against those who obstruct a royal procession or otherwise insult the monarchy. Thailand is already under a national state of emergency as part of its efforts to fight the coronavirus, and it was not immediately clear how the new decree was different. One change is that police said they will install checkpoints around Bangkok for security purposes. Protesters were undaunted and said they would gather again in a Bangkok shopping district Thursday afternoon. Deputy police spokesman Col. Kissana Phathanacharoen warned that calling for such a protest or attending one was against the law. These moves are clearly designed to stamp out dissent, and sow fear in anyone who sympathises with the protesters’ views,” the group said in a statement.

Khan had indicated the tougher measures were on the way because there is “simply no other option” as he warned of a difficult winter ahead. The Opposition Labour Party member reiterated his party’s demands for a brief “circuit breaker” complete lockdown to try and get a grip on the rising infection rate in the face of the Conservative-led government’s “complete failure to get a working test, trace and isolate system in place”. “Nobody wants to see more restrictions, but this is deemed to be necessary in order to protect Londoners by myself, London council leaders and ministers,” Khan said. “In London, we experienced the worst of COVID19 back in the spring. Thousands of lives were lost and our economy has been left reeling. We simply can’t afford for the government to be slow to act again,” he said. Rupa Huq, Labour

The report however, did not mention the day of the visit, reports Yonhap News Agency. The KCNA said that “Kim pointed out that he will deal strictly with cases of violation in the reconstruction efforts”. North Korea’s eastern province was one of the country’s most damaged areas, hit by back-to-back typhoons in recent months. The North Korean leader had earlier visited the typhoon-hit mining town of Komdok, also in South Hamgyong province and reviewed recovery efforts, state-media said on Wednesday. The latest trip came days after Kim held a meeting of the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers’ Party to discuss recovery efforts in the typhoon-affected regions and dispatched soldiers to help with recovery work, reports Yonhap News Agency.

MP for Ealing Central and Acton in west London, took to Twitter to say she was unconvinced “this tinkering” would be enough and also repeated calls for a nationwide circuit-breaker lockdown to stop the disease “spreading like wildfire”. Labour shadow minister and London’s Ilford North MP Wes Streeting said the new restrictions would keep businesses open “in name only” as he called for more economic support. “There are lots of restaurants, pubs, bars and other venues whose doors will be open but customers will just not be walking through the door,” he said.

Meanwhile, it also emerged that Greater Manchester may be the next region to join Liverpool in Tier 3 or the “very high alert” level, which is akin to a complete lockdown. Hancock said that discussions remain ongoing about areas that need to be moved into this highest alert category. Areas in the third-tier face extreme curbs, with different households banned from mixing indoors or outdoors in hospitality venues or private gardens and pubs, bars and other hospitality settings are meant to be closed unless they are serving substantial sit-down meals.

WASHINGTON, OCT 15 (PTI): Facing the twin task of fighting the coronavirus pandemic today and building a better tomorrow, the world is experiencing a new Bretton Woods moment, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Thursday. Addressing the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund’s Board of Governors, she said that what was true at Bretton Woods, when allies at the end of World War II gathered for a conference to create the institutions that would use economic cooperation to prevent future conflicts, remains true today. “Today we face a new Bretton Woods moment. A pandemic that has already cost more than a million lives. An economic calamity that will make the world economy 4.4 per cent smaller this year and strip an estimated USD 11 trillion of output by next year. And untold human desperation in the face of huge disruption and rising poverty for the first time in decades,” she said. “Once again, we face two massive tasks: to fight the crisis today and build

ost Malone picked up nine awards at last night’s 2020 Billboard Music Awards (October 14) held at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre without a live audience, the ceremony saw performances from the likes of Sia while Lizzo urged US voters to participate in next month’s vital election. Post Malone scooped a total of nine awards at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards, while there were also victories for the likes of Billie Eilish, Kanye West and Cardi B.

While most of the evening at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards was spent honoring today’s brightest stars, host Kelly Clarkson took a moment to remember the late Eddie Van Halen. The “Since U Been Gone” singer, 38, mentioned a handful of stars that passed away within the last year including Juice WRLD and Little Richard, before tur ning her attention to Van Halen. The rock legend died last week at the age of 65

after a battle with cancer. “Just a few days ago, a true giant was taken from us: Eddie Van Halen,” said Clarkson. “He was a legendary guitarist, an amazing musician and an incredible songwriter.” To honor the late icon, the show then aired a clip of Eddie playing with the band Van Halen at the 2015 Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas -- a rarity as the band did not perform on live television often, according to Clarkson. I’ll be out of cancer soon: Sanjay Dutt

O

pening up for the first time about his battle with cancer, actor Sanjay Dutt says he is optimistic he will “beat” the disease soon. In August, the 61-yearold actor had announced that he would be taking a break from his professional commitments to focus on medical treatment, amid reports that he was battling lung cancer. In an Instagram video, posted on late Wednesday evening, Sanjay Dutt was seen getting a haircut at the salon of celebrity hairstylist Aalim Hakim. The actor pointed to a scar designed by Hakim

as part of the haircut and said, “This is a recent scar in my life, but I’ll beat it. I’ll be out of this cancer soon.” Sanjay Dutt, along with producer-wife Maanayata Dutt, had flown to Dubai last month to be with their children, nineyear-old fraternal twins Shaahran and Iqra. The actor, who recently featured in “Sadak 2”, will be next seen in “KGF: Chapter 2” and Ranbir Kapoor-starrer “Shamshera”. Sanjay Dutt said he is growing his beard for the sequel of the 2018 actiondrama “KGF” as he is

scheduled to start shooting for the film next month. The period action film, starring Yash, marks the Bollywood star’s Kannada debut. “I need the look for the film as we are starting in November. I am happy to be on the sets again. There’s ‘Shamshera’s dubbing lined up too, so that will be fun. It’s good to be back,” he added. Towards the end of the video, when Hakim said he was happy that the actor appears in good spirits, Dutt replied he has started working out again, after an apparent weight loss due to the treatment. “I’m getting my muscles back, they’re coming back slowly. I’ll get out of this,” he said. Sanjay Dutt is the eldest child of late Bollywood stars Nargis and Sunil Dutt. He has two sisters -- Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt. The actor also has a daughter Trishala Dutt (32) from his first marriage to Richa Sharma. (PTI)

CBI refutes closure of SSR case, says probe still on

mid some media reports that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to file a closure report in Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case, the federal agency on Thursday refuted the claims and said that such reports are “erroneous” and the investigation is still continuing. CBI spokesperson R.K. Gaur said in a statement, “CBI continues to investigate the death of Sushant. There are certain speculative reports in the media that the CBI has reached a conclusion. It may be reiterated that these reports are speculative and erroneous.” The remarks came amid media speculation that the agency will be filing a closure report soon. Earlier, the forensic team of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) led by Sudhir Gupta had ruled out the murder angle in the actor’s death case.

Bang holds a 34.7 percent stake in the company, worth 3.19 trillion won based on the closing price, making him the eighth-richest stockholder in South Korea, according to data compiled by industry tracker Chaebul. com.

BTS took home 123.5 billion won worth of stocks, or 17.6 billion won per member. The ceremony marked the first initial public offering (IPO) celebration in about three months, due to the new coronavirus. The agency has been called one of this year’s three big IPO deals in South Korea, along with biopharmaceutical blue chip SK Biopharmaceuticals and mobile game giant Kakao Games. The last rites took place at the Chandanwadi crematorium in South Mumbai “She passed away early this morning. Eight years ago, she was diagnosed with a tumour in her brain. For the last three years, she was bedridden because one side (of her body) was paralysed,” her daughter said.

All of India’s near10,000 movie screens have remained shut since the country imposed a strict lockdown in March this year, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi pushes for a gradual easing of measures, some states have allowed theatres to reopen, though at 50 per cent capacity and with strict curbs in place. Cinema staff welcomed back with flowers and vermilion the first, relatively few visitors who wore masks. “It feels good... two big-ticket movies waiting to be released. “We won’t know if audiences will come unless we release a film, but the big question is if those audiences are enough,” he said. For now, theatres are screening older films, including a biopic of Modi, which first released after his resounding election victory last year.

Instead of waiting for theatres to open, several Bollywood production houses have instead sold movies to streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney and Amazon’s Prime Video, which have premiered several titles in the last few months. “We are trying to test the waters, see if audiences will come back. Once they do, hopefully we will see new movies releasing,” Akshaye Rathi, a theatre owner who owns properties in the central states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, told Reuters. For India’s coronavirus-battered theatre industry, deprived of Bollywood blockbusters, analysts say more bleak months await. “Many single-screen theatres will probably never open, and we won’t know the full impact until theatres actually do open,” said Shailesh Kapoor of Ormax, an agency that tracks Bollywood releases. John Cena marries Shay Shariatzadeh in Florida

ohn Cena and Shay Shariatzadeh are married. The two tied the knot in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, according to a marriage certificate. Per People magazine, the couple obtained a marriage license on Friday. Reps for Cena did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment. Rumors of a romance between the “Bumblebee” actor, 43, and Shariatzadeh began swirling in March of 2019, less than a year after Cena’s high-profile split from Nikki Bella, who he was engaged to. He was also previously married to Elizabeth Huberdeau from 2009-2012. The star possibly hinted at his upcoming nuptials on Twitter last week when he spoke about love. “Love involves constant effort,” he wrote online. “When you are truly ready to let love in and give to love all it needs to flourish, I feel there is no greater more rewarding connection.” Back in February, an eagle-eyed fan spotted a ring on Shariatzadeh’s finger, sharing the image online and sparking engagement

speculation. “John Cena [was] spotted today at a carnival in Mission Beach, San Diego with Shay Shariatzadeh right behind him with [a] huge engagement ring on her finger,” an eye witness told E! News at the time. “They were very affectionate. She was grabbing onto

his arm the whole time and the ring was def on her left hand.” A second witness told the outlet: “John was with a shorter lady with brown hair. She had a huge rock on her left hand! They were definitely holding hands, that’s when I noticed him walk by.” (FoxNews) K Y M C

Srikanth Kidambi enters Expectant father Kohli looks to emulate Mary Kom Denmark Open quarters

Odense, Oct 15 (PTI): Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth stormed into the Denmark Open quarterfinals with a straight-game win over Canada’s Jason Anthony Ho-Shue here on Thursday. The fifth seeded Indian took 33 minutes to get the better of his Canadian opponent 21-15 21-14 in the men’s singles second round of the USD 750,000 Super 750 tournament, the only world tour event happening this year in a calendar thrown haywire by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Indian then reeled off six points to create a huge gap, which Jason couldn’t bridge. Srikanth fell behind 5-8 in the second game but bounced back with six straight points to reach 11-8 at the interval. The Canadian made it 10-11 after resumption. Srikanth then stepped up the pace and was immediately rewarded as he opened up a 15-10 lead. He constructed the rallies well to quickly jump to 19-11. Srikanth soon garnered 8 match points but sent one to the net and couldn’t reach the shuttle next to concede two. But his opponent went wide next and Srikanth

Upcoming Danes upset favourites The DANISA Denmark Open 2020 saw its biggest upset so far when men’s doubles title favourites Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen were shown the door by younger compatriots Joel Eipe and Rasmus KjÆr. Eipe and Kjaer went into the match without a trace of being intimidated at facing their more accomplished seniors, and despite never beating them in practice. A second game win for the No.4 seeds appeared to have shifted the

momentum their way, but to the credit of the younger pair, they never let up on their attacking game, walking away winners at 21-18 17-21 21-16. Scottish duo upset fifth seeds Scotland mixed doubles duo Alexander Dunn and Ciara Torrance struck big at the DANISA Denmark Open 2020 today, beating fifth seeds Rodion Alimov and Alina Davletova. New Delhi, Oct 15 (PTI): Expectant father Virat Kohli says he need not look beyond six-time world champion boxer MC Mary Kom when it comes to taking inspiration on how to strike a balance between parenthood and excelling in sport. The India captain declared that he would seek to follow the path laid down by Mary Kom, a champion boxer and a mother of four. Kohli and his actor wife Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child in January next year. “I can’t think of anyone better than you to talk about being a parent and have a busy career like you,” Kohli told her during a Puma India Instagram live chat on Wednesday evening. Before they got underway with their interaction, the six-time world champion and Olympic bronze medallist congratulated the star couple. “Being a mother, training, all those championships, how did you do it, how did you find the balance?” the celebrated Indian cricket captain wished to know from the 37-year-old Mary Kom, whose desire to dominate the ring remains as strong as ever. The pugilist attributed it to the support system

within her immediate family. “After my marriage, my husband has been a pillar of my strength. The support he gives me is immense. He takes care of everything that I could ask for, he is the ideal husband and father,” she said. “Also my children are second to none.” It was appropriate when Kohli said the path laid down by Mary Kom is the ideal one to follow for any parent. “You are such an inspiration not only for the women of the country but for everyone. What you have achieved in your sport, against all odds, against

the shortcomings be it the facilities and all the other challenges that you must have faced... “ Yo u k e e p g o i n g through and finding your your path is something that is so inspirational for everyone. I just wanted to say that you are a great inspiration for all of us. I am really honoured that I am getting to ask you these questions,” Kohli said. “We are in the journey to become parents ourselves, we take a lot of inspiration from what you have done, we are going to follow the same path.” Mary Kom was full of innocence as she told

Kohli that it would take a full two-three days to talk about her journey. “If I talk about my journey, it won’t finish so early,” she quipped. About the message she would like to give to promising athletes, Mary Kom asked them to never give up and keep fighting, irrespective of what others feel. “You will always have naysayers, so many people are talking negatively, the good things we do only lasts for a few days... These naysayers distract and disturb me a lot sometimes. “Many people are inspired by me as well as you

(Kohli). There are so many legends in our country, some of whom have inspired me. They battled great odds before achieving success and they are my actual heroes.” When the topic shifted to the Olympics, she said she was a bit surprised by the postponement of the Tokyo Games to next summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “First I was so surprised... This news came as shock to us. I have been fighting for almost 20 years. So I was shocked but life and routine are the same even after the postponement,” she said.

Gayle & Rahul power KXIP to 8-wicket win

Sharjah, Oct 15 (PTI): K L Rahul played a captain’s knock and Chris Gayle fired in his first game since January as Kings XI Punjab finally ended their five-match losing streak with an eightwicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in an IPL match here on Thursday. Chasing 172 in a mustwin game, the in-form opening pair of Rahul (61 not off 49) and Mayank Agarwal (45 off 25) got off to a flying start before Gayle (53 off 45) joined his skipper in the middle to get KXIP close to the finishing line. Needing seven off the final two overs with nine wickets in hand, KXIP somehow managed to take the game to the last ball with Nicholas Pooran finally hitting the winning six. Both Rahul and Gayle smashed five sixes each, rendering the opposition attack helpless. Batting first, skipper Virat Kohli top-scored with 48 off 39 balls in his 200th game for RCB before Chris Morris’ 25 off 8 in the death overs took the team to 171 for six. It was a rare all-round effort from KXIP who had failed to close out games earlier in the competition. Mohammad Shami (2/45) conceded 24 runs in the final over that spoiled his figures after he got rid of Kohli and AB de Villiers but overall it was a much improved bowling effort by KXIP especially in the death overs. wicket of the tournament. The run chase was supposed to be straightforward after Agarwal took the opposition to the cleaners in the powerplay before Rahul took over. As usual, the 41year-old Gayle, batting at three, took his time early on before going ballistic. Earlier, KXIP conceded only 25 runs from over 16-19 before Morris and Isuru Udana hammered Shami for three sixes. Rahul experimented by opening the bowling with

Glenn Maxwell (0/28 in 4 overs). He was slog swept by his Australian teammate and close friend Aaron Finch on the final ball. Other opener Devdutt Padikkal (18) also went for his shots with his best hit of the night being the whip off Shami that went for a six over deep square leg. However, both Padikkal and Finch could not build on their starts. Padikkal was foxed by a slower one from left-arm pacer Arshdeep

Conor McGregor ‘accepts’ date to fight Dustin Poirier in Texas

Conor McGregor beat Donald Cerrone in his last fight in January.

TEXAS, OCT 15 (AGENCIES): Conor McGregor says he has accepted a date to fight American Dustin Poirier in Texas next year. The former twoweight UFC champion, 32, announced his retirement in June - for the third time in four years. But he has been openly negotiating with UFC pro-

moter Dana White about a return to the octagon and said in a tweet that the bout will be on 23 January. “I accept, Jan 23rd is on!” he said. “My goal is to see this fight take place in Cowboy stadium. Proper style!” McGregor said he wants the fight place to take place at the Dallas

Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium stadium because of his relationship with owner Jerry Jones. “Jerry Jones is a friend and the stadium can hold our crowd. I will be ready for Texas and Texas will be ready for my fans,” he added. Poirier, 31, responded to McGregor’s tweet, saying: “Close to home for me on my birthday weekend! What weight?” McGregor also suggested he would then fight boxer Manny Pacquiao. The Irishman said last month he would come out of retirement for a boxing fight with 41-year-old Pacquiao in the Middle East. McGregor’s last fight was a win over Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January, which gave him a 22-4 record in mixed martial arts.

Didn’t know I bowled IPL’s fastest ball, heard about it afterwards: Nortje Dubai, Oct 15 (AGENCIES): South African speedster Anrich Nortje, who set the Indian Premier League ablaze by bowling the fastest delivery in the tournament’s history, says he was unaware of the feat until after the end of the match. The 26-year-old pacer clocked a breathtaking 156.2 kmph while bowling to Jos Buttler in the third over of Rajasthan Royals’ run-chase against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday. He bettered compatriot Dale Steyn’s (154.4 kmph) record in the process. “I heard about it afterwards. I did not know about it at the time,” Anrich told his Capitals teammate Shikhar Dhawan in a video posted by IPLT20.com. Nortje added that he has been working hard on injecting pace in his deliveries. “I have been working really hard to get my pace up, been a couple of seasons. Been working on my braced leg and my front arm... simple stuff. Happy to get some pace behind it but you obviously need to get it in the right area, that’s the most important thing.” Bowling the fastest delivery did not have the desired result for Nortje as Buttler scooped it for a boundary. The Englishman had played the same shot in

the previous delivery. However, the duel didn’t last long as the South African claimed Buttler’s wicket with a 155 kmph thunderbolt, the second fastest ball in IPL history. “ Ye a h , t h e b a t t l e against Buttler was interesting. I know he plays the scoop shots, but when he played the first one, it took me by surprise,” Nortje said. “I did not think he would do it again, but he played the shot once again on the next delivery. He played really well, but I stuck to my strength, obviously we saw how the wicket was playing so I was trying to use the wicket and get some variation,” Nortje added. He made his IPL debut after Delhi Capitals roped him as a replacement for all-rounder Chris

Woakes ahead of the start of the season. He has been breathtakingly quick, clocking the five fastest deliveries in the ongoing edition of the lucrative league. Kagiso Rabada, who bowls in tandem with Nortje in DC, was delighted for his compatriot, adding that they are learning from each other. “It looks like that every game. Really happy for him but not happy for the batter,” Rabada said of Nortje’s record. “When we play we only think about the delivery and not about the speed gun. We learn a lot from each other. He is a real fast bowler and I can learn some technical stuff from him. “I have some experience which I can tell him about. It is good to chat,” Rabada said.

Singh to be caught at cover, while Finch missed a fast leg-break from M Ashwin, leaving RCB at 62 for two in the seventh over. With Kohli looking good at the other end, AB de Villiers was expected to come in at his usual number four spot but with two leg-spinners in operation, left-handed batsman Washington Sundar was sent ahead of the South African. The move did not work as he struggled to 13 off 14 balls.

KXIP, whose bowling has been the weakest link, did rather well from 11-14 overs conceding just 20 runs to put pressure on the opposition. RCB needed to move on and southpaw Shivam Dube provided the timely strike, dispatching Ravi Bishnoi to consecutive sixes to amass 19 runs from the over. Following Dube’s dismissal in the 15th over, De Villiers finally joined Kohli for the late assault, which was eventually provided by Morris.

Football fans to partially return to stadiums in Mexico

Ronaldo returns to Juventus on special medical flight

Mexico City, Oct 15 (IANS): Football fans in Mexico are free to partially return to stadiums for the first time in more than seven months, the Liga MX has said. All football in the country was suspended following Tijuana’s 3-2 home win over Pachuca on March 13 amid the escalating coronavirus pandemic. Liga MX, the body responsible for organizing elite football in Mexico, restarted competitions in July, with all matches since then taking place behind closed doors. “After holding discussions with the federal government and the health ministry, we are able to announce the return of fans to the stands in a gradual and orderly process,” the entity said in a statement on Wednesday, reports Xinhua news agency.

ROME, OCT 15 (IANS): Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who tested positive for Covid-19 while leading Portugal in the UEFA Nations League, has returned to Italy via a special medical flight. Ronaldo, who is under contract with Juventus for 31 million euros ($36.6 million) per year, returned from Portugal on Wednesday and will continue his coronavirus quarantine under the care of Juventus physicians, reports Xinhua news agency. The Portugal skipper first tested positive for the virus on Monday, but his status was not revealed until the result of Tuesday’s second test was available. Italian media reported that within hours of the second test, Juventus began arranging a special flight for him to return to Italy. “Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Italy with a medical flight authorised by the competent health authorities at the re-

quest of the player and will continue his fiduciary isolation at his home,” Juventus said in a statement. The team said Ronaldo was asymptomatic and in good health, despite the positive test. Italian media speculated that Ronaldo may have been infected by two members of the Por-

tuguese national team who tested positive on Monday. Portugal beat Sweden 3-0 on Wednesday night in Lisbon without the three infected players. Juve doctors will oversee Ronaldo’s recovery, along with that of teammate Weston McKennie, a member of the United States’ national team. Ju-

ventus revealed Wednesday that McKennie had also tested positive for Covid19. Juventus, who will play its next game on Saturday against winless Crotone, is currently in a three-way tie for third place just three games into the Serie A season, with two wins and one loss.

Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings.
