Muivah hardens stand on solution

will never join ‘Nagas India nor accept the

Indian Constitution

NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (AGENCIES): In an exclusive interview with The Wire, that is likely to upset and even annoy the Centre and which starkly reveals the sharp differences that are still separating the NSCN (I-M) from the Indian government, NSCN (I-M) general secretary, Th. Muivah has repeatedly and forcefully said that the Nagas will never be part of the Indian Union nor will they accept India’s constitution. Muivah added that there could be no compromise on the NSCN (I-M)’s insistence on a Naga flag and Naga constitution. “We have stood our ground on these two nonnegotiable issues and we shall continue to stand till the last man standing,” he said. Muivah added that Naga organisations like the Naga National Political Groups or several civil society organisations, who are not insisting on a separate

flag and constitution, are “traitors”. In a 55-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Muivah, who is 86 and hard of hearing, also sharply criticised R.N. Ravi, the interlocutor and Nagaland Governor. He said Ravi “betrayed” the NSCN (I-M), “he has thrown us away” and that was acting at the behest of the Union home ministry. Clearly indicating that the NSCN (I-M)’s patience is running out Muivah told The Wire that if the government does not agree to NSCN (I-M)’s terms or backs away from earlier understandings they would be “compelled to leave the talks”. However, despite repeated questioning, he

refused to say how much more time he was prepared to give the talks. He also repeatedly refused to answer the question whether the NSCN (I-M) would take to arms if it walked out of the talks thus returning the situation in Nagaland to what prevailed before the 1997 ceasefire. At one point when he was asked whether the insurgency would re-start if the talks collapse, his answer was “you need to ask that to the Indian government”. He said that historically the Nagas have never been under Indian rule. He repeatedly said this has been accepted by the Indian government. Therefore, he argued, if the Nagas have a unique identity and history the solution must also be unique.

Dimapur has highest TB cases in the state

KOHIMA, OCT 16 (NPN): Dimapur district with 1036 Tuberculosis (TB) patients has the highest TB cases in the state followed by Kohima (414), Mon (365) and Tuensang (191), Zunheboto (85), Wokha (81), Peren (74), Kiphire (53) and Longleng (35), as per the official record from January–September, 2020. As the country aims to end TB by 2025, five years ahead of the global target, Nagaland Health and Family Welfare (H&FW) minister S Pangnyu Phom released “TB Harega, Desh Jeetega”, a handbook for

elected representatives on Tuberculosis at his office chamber here Friday. Speaking at the handbook release programme, the minister said that the National Strategic Plan (NSP 2017-2025) has outlined ambitious strategies and several innovative steps in implementing the National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP). Pointing out that early diagnosis was appropriate treatment and important for ending TB, the minister said that in order to achieve that the NTEP has expanded NTEP facilities with state of art molecular diagnosis,

availability of free treatment for both drugs sensitive and drug resistant TB cases, nutritional assistance to patients through NIKSHAY Poshan Yojana (NPY) and financial schemes to reduce catastrophic cost of patients and their families. The minister said Nagaland state was committed to reduce TB burden in terms of incidences, prevalence, morbidity and mortality and ensure that Nagaland free from TB in line with NSP. He pointed out that Nagaland’s performance was assessed based on State TB score Index annually, adding that in 2019 the state was ranked in the second list of best performance state amongst the smaller category. Phom also said that Nagaland was acknowledged with best performance recognition during the release of annual health India TB report launched by Union Minister for Health And Family Welfare on June 24, (Cont’d on p-8) 2020.

Asked specifically whether the government’s refusal to agree to a separate Naga flag and constitution would be a breaking point he said “there can be no solution without a flag and constitution”. He dismissed the argument that after the government had revoked Article 370 and done away with Kashmir’s flag and constitution it cannot now accept this in the case of Nagaland. He said the unique Naga history and identity not only means that the solution has to be unique but also that the Jammu and Kashmir precedent cannot apply. When it was pointed out to Muivah that groups like Naga National Political Groups and civil society organisations are not insisting on a flag and constitution he dismissed them as “traitors”, The Wire stated. On October 15, various stakeholders and civil society groups unanimously passed a resolution to support the ongoing talks in ‘one voice’. The resolution, however, was quiet on the NSCN (I-M)’s demand for a separate flag.

DIMAPUR, OCT 16 (NPN): All Nagaland College Students’ Union (ANCSU) has claimed of sending 10 lakh mails to email accounts of top state government officials on the third day of its ongoing “digital protest” against the failure of the government to set up a panel to probe fund utilisation at Khelhoshe Polytechnic Atoizu, Zunheboto. ANCSU general secretary Imnameren N Jamir and I&PR secretary Aochuba P Jamir said, besides sending emails, multiple phone calls were made to the chief minister and chief secretary’s office and other government offices. Nagaland has around 11,000 excess govt. teachers: Sukhalu

KT Sukhalu with HSLC & HSSLC toppers and NSF office bearers at RCEMPA. (NP)

Correspondent

KOHIMA, OCT 16 (NPN): Advisor School Education, KT Sukhalu, Friday said that there was an excess of around 11,000 government teachers in the state against the existing 20,000 teachers inclusive of SSA and RMSA teachers. Speaking as special guest at the “HSLC & HSSLC Naga Toppers’ felicitation programme 2020” for students from Nagaland and Manipur, organized by Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) at RCEMPA Hall Jotsoma here, Sukhalu pointed that since the national average of student-teacher ratio was 32:1, the actual requirement of teachers was 9000. He also asserted that there was a general perception among families in

the state that sending their children to private schools was better. Advisor said that with the increase in enrolment in private school over the years, the enrolment in government schools has dropped to 1,69,548. In spite of government teachers being well qualified and trained, Sukhalu said that government teachers did not seem to inspire parents and children including their own children to study in government schools. “We need to seriously ponder over this matter, either to close down schools that do not have any enrolment (both in urban and rural areas) or merge schools that have low enrolment; and if student enrolment continues to drop, how do we reduce the number of government

teachers?” Sukhalu said. In this regard, the advisor urged NSF and ENSF to focus more on the education and welfare of the students and to ensure that teachers were doing their job and “not indulging in other activities keeping their proxies”. Referring to the ongoing NSF and ENSF protest over the issue of SSA and RMSA teachers, the advisor thanked the two federations for showing their respect to former Minister late CM Chang by suspending their agitation till October 18. At the same time, Sukhalu appealed to all the stakeholders especially both the federations and affiliate members to reconsider their proposed agitation that was proposed to begin from October 19. DIMAPUR, OCT 16 (NPN): NNC’s central executive council (CEC) has clarified that it has nothing to do with either the Framework Agreement of 2015 or the Agreed Position of 2017 signed by NSCN (I-M) and Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs) respectively with Government of India (GoI) and cautioned both the groups against misleading the Nagas and jeopardising the Naga position, besides asking them to desist from “nonsense engagements” with GoI henceforth. In a statement, NNC also declared that it would steadfastly continue to uphold and defend Naga national rights as declared and established under its initiatives based on unquestionable historical foundations of the Nagas. NNC listed formal declaration of Naga indepen-

dence on August 14, 1947, Naga plebiscite of May 16, 1951 resulting in an overwhelming affirmation to stay independent, formation of Federal Republic of Nagaland on March 22, 1956 by amalgamation of Naga areas and to safeguard territorial integrity of Nagaland as defined in Art.1 of the Yehzabo of Nagaland as the historical foundations. Art. 1 states: “The territory of Nagaland shall comprise all territories of Nagas and such other territories as the Tatar Hoho may by law admit on such terms and conditions as it may deem fit.” NNC clarified that it the statement was issued to address the commotion created by unceasing parleys all these years between the “ever-manipulative Government of India and groups of self-seeking Nagas” in the name of peace talks, solution, settlement, etc.

Terror funding: ED attaches `4.23 cr assets of Niki’s wife 8 candidates in the WC flays grenade attack on AR camp NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (PTI): Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday said it has attached assets worth over Rs 4 crore of the wife of a leader of NSCN(K), in a money laundering case linked to terror financing.

This is it!

“Surely, I’m not going to let coronavirus deprive me of branded items at beggarly prices.” K Y M C

The attached assets, amounting to Rs 4.23 crore, are in the form of residential houses, a vehicle and balances in bank accounts and belong to Shelly N Sumi, who is the wife of NSCN (K) leader ‘lt. gen.’ Niki Sumi, the central probe agency said in a statement. Shelly and her associates were intercepted by the troops of paramilitary force Assam Rifles on April 7, 2017 near the Karong village, Manipur while they were travelling in a bus from Dimapur to Imphal. It was alleged by the agencies that Shelly was travelling to Myanmar to hand over about Rs 18.47 lakh cash to her husband. The ED case is based on an NIA FIR against Shelly Sumi. The NIA probe had found that at the time of her arrest Shelly planned to travel to GHQ

Taga, (HQ of NSCN-K) Myanmar, to handover an amount of Rs. 18.47 lakh to her husband Niki Sumi. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the probe of the case after the interception and the ED later filed a criminal case of money laundering and terror financing against Shelly N Sumi and others. The NIA, in searches carried out at Shelly N Sumi’s locations, recovered another over Rs 27.90 lakh cash. The ED said its probe found that the “NSCN(K), a proscribed terrorist organisation, indulged in collecting funds from government employees, businessmen by extortion and illegal means and Sumi and her associates were involved in criminal conspiracy to transfer funds to NSCN (K) via the Indo-Myanmar border.” “Shelly Sumi is a gov-

ernment employee working as sectional assistant in the public works department of Nagaland and gets monthly salary of about Rs 28,000 which is the only legal income of the family of seven (Sumi and her six children),” it said. “The details of the properties owned by Sumi, her family members and associates were unearthed and it was found they amassed huge assets in the form of a palatial house at Dimapur in Nagaland that is valued at Rs 3.6 crore, a Scorpio vehicle, a house at Zunheboto and bank balances in the name of family members,” it said. The properties created in the name of Shelly N Sumi and her children were “acquired without any reasonable source of income and from illegally extorted money by terror activities”, the agency said.

fray for by-elections

KOHIMA, OCT 16 (NPN): Altogether eight candidates from different political parties and Independents filed nomination papers on the last day for by-polls to two Assembly constituencies – 14 Southern Angami-I and 60 PungroKiphire. According to chief electoral officer Abhijit Sinha, five candidates filed their nominations for 60 Pungro-Kiphire. The candidates include Khaseo Anar (Congress), Lirimong Sangtam (BJP), K Shellumthong (Independent), T Yangseo Sangtam (Independent) and Kiusumew Yimchunger (Independent). On the other hand, three candidates filed their nominations on Friday for 14 Southern Angami-1 constituency and the candidates are Medo Yhokha (NDPP), Kikovi Kirha (NPF) and Seyievilie Peter Zashumo (Independent). While October 17 has been fixed as the date of scrutiny of nominations, the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is October 19. Polling will be held on November 3 and counting of votes will take place on November 10. The 14 Southern Angami-I seat fell vacant following the demise of sitting NDPP legislator and speaker Vikho-o Yoshu and 60-Pungro Kiphire fell vacant after the demise of its sitting NPF legislator T. Torechu. (Correspondent)

DIMAPUR, OCT 16 (NPN): Working Committee (WC) of NNPGs expressed shock at the throwing of a grenade at Assam Rifles transit camp near Purana Bazaar on October 10. In a statement, WC called on all Nagas to commit themselves to fulfil the common aspiration, warning that violence was a direct challenge to “our people” that deserved mass condemnation. Noting that Nagas were keenly waiting for an honourable and acceptable political solution to the long-drawn “Indo-Naga” political issue, WC claimed that, with active support and co-operation from Naga tribes and civil society groups, it had exhibited utmost commitment and transparency in relaying the status of the political dialogue, the negotiated points and political structures post solution in Nagaland as well as in “our ancestral lands” presently under Manipur, Arunachal and Assam. Calling for peace, WC emphasised that it was the duty of all tribes and civil society groups

to retake towns, villages, colonies, etc, from anti-peace elements and criminals. It said creating fear psychosis by national workers should not be tolerated anymore. WC was categorical in stating “none should attempt to keep the Naga society at ransom. Those who do not understand the value of peace should not claim Naga future.” Pointing out that honourable, acceptable and peaceful political solution would not fly in from the USA, UK, Netherlands, Japan or Thailand, WC said while it acknowledged Naga well-wishers from across the globe, the reality is that the issue is between Government of India (GoI) and the Nagas. Hence, WC said it was negotiating with GoI and confided with Naga tribes on all negotiated points without ambiguity. WC said “beginning from Agreed Position signed on Nov. 17, 2017 and all along the negotiations, the political and historical identity of the Nagas had been entrenched. We reiterate this truth before God and the Naga people.” K Y M C

NPP dares BJP to pull out of coalition

SHILLONG, OCT 16 (AGENCIES): With the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a constituent of the National People’s Party (NPP)-led ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) regularly raking up issues related to alleged corruption in the government, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Friday asked the party to pull out of the coalition if they “are not comfortable” being with it, reports UNI news. My only concern is that if they (BJP) are not comfortable since they are also part of the government, they are free to leave. If you are not comfortable you are free to leave the MDA government. That is the easiest way out,” Tynsong said. “Don’t criticize and at the same time work with the IIDA. What is happening now is that the BJP is criticizing its partner despite being a partner; in the SIDS,” he said. Tynsong was reacting to the allegations of the BJP state leadership of corruption in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC)

Meghalaya BJP against introduction of CBW Correspondent Shillong, Oct 16: The Meghalaya Pradesh BJP has strongly opposed the introduction of Central Bonded Warehouse (CBW) in the State, maintaining that centralizing the bonded warehouse was not going to benefit the 44 bond owners in Meghalaya but would instead “greatly benefit only four owners” who will control the entire system of supply. “The CBW was abolished in Rajasthan when the BJP government found that it was not helping the needs of the State as only few were benefiting out of it. The CBW is often controlled

by some individuals who make maximum profit for their political bosses, which ultimately leads to the mafia system of functioning,” Meghalaya State Unit President, Ernest Mawrie said on Friday. “The BJP does not want Meghalaya to become a mafia ruled state as it is turning into one with scams erupting right from councils, coal, electricity bills etc. And now Central Bonded Warehouse will turn into another corruption and destruction of the State,” he said. Stating that CBW was already abolished in Uttar Pradesh due to similar reasons like Rajasthan, Mawrie asked, “.. why is Meghalaya interested to follow the controversial

centralization of bonded warehouse.” “BJP strongly opposes this decision and we would go to any end to counter the decision of the Conrad Sangma-led Government in introducing CBW,” the BJP cautioned. The BJP is a constituent of the Conrad K Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government. “The officials involved in the introduction of CBW will also be dealt with all legal proceedings because it is not the mandate of the public but few corrupt thinking leaders and officials who want to turn Meghalaya into a mafia run society,” the BJP maintained.

vacant in the state Assembly will be held on November 7 along with some other states of the country. Of the five constituencies, three -Lilong and Wangjing-Tentha in Thoubal district and Wangoi in Imphal West district – are in the valley districts while one each –Singhat in Churachandpur and Saitu in Kangpokpi district- are in hill districts. In the valley districts, the state police had already taken up security measures by conducting random mopping operations in the pollbound districts, particularly within the jurisdiction of constituencies where bypolls are to be held. Meanwhile, ex-MLA Ngamthang Haokip who is also an advisor to the state chief minister filed his nomination as BJP candidate for the upcoming by-election in Saitu (ST Reserved) Assembly constituency in Kang-

pokpi district on Friday. The by-poll in this constituency was necessitated after he resigned from the state Assembly before quitting Congress to switch to the saffron fold. Except Haokip, no other intending persons filed nomination papers for candidature till today even though the by-poll notification allowing filing of nomination papers was issued on October 13. The last date of filing the nomination paper is October 20. On the other hand, while the ruling BJP has already announced names of candidates to be contest on party tickets in four of the five Assembly constituencies, the Congress and other parties are yet to be name their candidates. MPCC was reportedly holding a meeting to decide names to be sent as party nominees for the by-polls.

Govt to decide on right age of marriage for girls: PM BJP slams Chirag Paswan, accuses LJP of

Narendra Modi take its decision after the submission of the report,” Modi said. In his Independence Day speech, the prime minister had announced that the government was deliberating on what should be the minimum age of marriage for women and has set up a committee to look into the matter. Currently, the minimum age of marriage is 18 years for women and 21 for men. Modi highlighted the efforts taken by his government in the last six years to fight against malnutrition. Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (PTI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the Centre on Friday over IMF’s projection that the Indian economy is set to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, saying it was another “solid achievement” by the government. Gandhi took a swipe at the government on Twitter by tagging a chart that showed IMF growth projections for 2020-21 for Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, China, Bhutan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and India. The char t showed that the Indian economy is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, the highest contrac-

tion among the countries mentioned. “Another solid achievement by the BJP government. Even Pakistan and Afghanistan handled Covid better than India,” Gandhi tweeted with the chart. The former Congress chief on Wednesday had also taken a dig at the government over IMF growth projections showing Bangladesh closing in on India in terms of per capita GDP this year and described it as a “solid achievement” of six years of BJP’s “hate-filled cultural nationalism”. The Indian economy, severely hit by the coronavirus pandemic, is projected to contract by a massive 10.3 per cent this year, the International Monetary Fund had said on Tuesday. However, India is likely to bounce back with an impressive 8.8 per cent growth rate in 2021, thus regaining the position of the fastest growing emerging economy, surpassing China’s projected growth rate of 8.2 per cent, the IMF said in its latest ‘World Economic Outlook’ report.

his government has taken an integrated and holistic approach to deal with the challenge of malnutrition. The government has adopted a multi-dimensional strategy to work on all those factors responsible for high malnutrition, he added. The government has started National Nutrition Mission, Modi informed. Highlighting other achievements, the prime minister said the government has built 11 crore toilets across the country under the Swachh Bharat Mission and has launched Jal Jeevan Mission to provide piped drinking water.

The government is also providing sanitary pads at Re 1 to poor women, he further said. “Because of these efforts, for the first time, the gross enrolment ratio of girls in education is more than that of boys,” Modi said. On malnutrition, the prime minister said the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has closely followed India’s fight against this problem in past decades. Some departments at different levels in the country made efforts but the scope was either limited or scattered, he pointed out. Modi said pregnancy at tender age, lack of education and awareness, inadequate availability of pure drinking water and lack of cleanliness were some of the factors due to which the desired results against malnutrition could not be achieved earlier. Modi said he had started various programmes to tackle malnutrition in Gujarat when he was the chief minister of the state. After becoming the prime minister in 2014,

BA L L I A / LU C K N OW (UP), OCT 16 (PTI): Police on Friday detained five people and arrested the brother of a local BJP leader who allegedly shot dead a 46-year-old man as a fracas broke out at a meeting attended by administration and police officials in Ballia in Uttar Pradesh. As the opposition parties targeted the BJP government over the incident in the Reoti police station area, local party MLA Surendra Singh sought to defend accused Dhirendra Pratap Singh and said had he not opened fire in self-defence, “dozens of his family members and associates would

have been killed”. The police administration admitted that there was prima facie “laxity” on its part and suspended nine policemen -- three subinspectors and six constables -- posted at Reoti police station. ‘India will take decisive action against those who plan to harm’ GURGAON, OCT 16 (PTI): India believes in the policy of ‘vasudhaiva kutumbakam’ or the world is one family but if someone plans to harm it then the country is capable to undertake appropriate action to thwart such attempts in a “decisive” way, Union minister G Kishan Reddy said on Friday. The minister of state for home was addressing the ‘black cat’ commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG) on the occasion of their 36th raising day being celebrated

at its garisson here. The NSG was established as a federal contingency force in 1984 to undertake specialist counter-terrorist, counterhijack and hostage rescue operations. “From the primordial, India believes in vasudhaiv kutumbakam which means the world is one family. We never think bad for a person or a country but if someone wants to bring harm to India then we are capable to undertake appropriate action in a decisive manner,” Reddy said in his address.

spreading confusion, lies ahead of polls

NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (PTI): In its most direct attack on the Lok Janshakti Party, the BJP on Friday accused its president Chirag Paswan of trying to create confusion by harping on his relations with senior leaders of the saffron party, and asserted that it had no ties with the LJP. Paswan has been lauding the BJP and its top leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, while attacking JD(U) president and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, giving rise to speculation that he has some tacit understanding with the saffron party. “We want to make it clear that we have no relations (with LJP), and we do not like this politics of spreading confusion,” BJP leader and Union minister Prakash Javadekar said. He and other BJP leaders also mocked the LJP as a “vote katua” (eating into votes of others) party which will not be able to make much impact in the elections.

with DIG Subhash Chandra Dubey, and said the incident was “unfortunate” and that strict action would be taken against all the accused. The ADG said Narendra Pratap Singh, the brother of the main accused, has been arrested. Narendra Pratap Singh has been named in an FIR, besides his brother and 2225 unnamed persons. A district police officer said raids are being conducted for the arrest of the accused persons. The main accused is still on the run. A brother of the deceased, however, alleged that the police let off the

main accused. “There were 10 policemen on the spot...they were saving the culprits and beating us. When Dhirendra Pratap Singh was fleeing after firing, the police had caught him from behind. But they later took him to a nearby embankment and let him go,” Tej Pratap Pal, the brother of the deceased, told reporters on Friday. Tej Pratap Pal’s brother Jai Prakash (46) was shot dead after the SDM decided not to go ahead with the meeting over allotment of ration shops due to a dispute between members of selfhelp groups. Ballia District Mag-

Prakash Javadekar Seeking to dispel any impression of a behind-thescenes pact with LJP, which walked out of the ruling National Democratic Alliance in Bihar and is contesting the assembly polls on its own, Javadekar asserted that the saffron party has no “B, C or D team”. The BJP’s attack on the LJP came amid Paswan’s continuous criticism of Kumar and effusive praise for Modi. He has also been claiming that a BJP-LJP alliance will form government in the state after the polls. The LJP also released videos of its founder Ram Vilas Paswan, who was a minister in the Modi govern-

ment and died recently, as it stepped up its call to oust the Kumar-led dispensation in Bihar. There is a view that the LJP, which has been contesting on seats where the JD(U) is in fray, may end up damaging Kumar’s party by attracting a section of NDA supporters. And the BJP’s unambiguous statement on Friday seems to be aimed at assuaging its main ally and send out a clear message to voters. Some LJP candidates in the state have also used Modi’s photographs in their campaign. Senior BJP leaders, including party general secretary Bhupender Yadav, too hit out at Paswan. He accused Paswan of practising the “politics of lies”, saying he had been praising the Bihar government until February this year. “Chirag should not either live in illusion or nurse any illusion or spread illusion,” Yadav tweeted, as he condemned the LJP president’s sharp comments targeting Kumar.

istrate Hari Pratap Shahi said the process of cancellation of arms licences of the accused persons was underway. DIG Dubey told reporters that, prima facie, there was laxity on the part of the police. Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Singh said the nine police personnel have been suspended. Five people have been detained for questioning, he said, adding that raids are being conducted for the arrest of the accused. Bairia MLA Surendra Singh confirmed that main accused Singh heads the

BJP’s ex-servicemen’s unit in Ballia district. He “opened fire in selfdefence or else dozens of his family members and associates would have been killed...he had no other option. It was a do-or-die situation,” the MLA told reporters in Ballia. Surendra Singh, who has made controversial statements in the past, termed the firing incident as “unfortunate and sad” and accused the administration of bias. The Opposition Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) attacked the Uttar Pradesh government over the incident.

NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (PTI): The Supreme Court Friday refused to entertain a PIL seeking dismissal of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra and imposition of President’s Rule in the state. A bench of Chief Justice S A Bobde and Justices A S Bopanna and V Ramasubramanian said that it could not entertain prayers like these. “As a petitioner, you are at liberty to approach the President, but do not come here,” the top court said in a hearing conducted via video conferencing. One Vikram Gehlot had filed the PIL seeking dismissal of the government alleging that the affairs of the state were not being carried out in line with constitutional and legal provisions. The plea had referred to the examples of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the demolition of part of Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut’s property as examples of poor law and order in the state. During the brief hearing, the top court took strong note of the submissions and asked as to how it can be said that the Constitution is not being followed in the state because of some incidents. Maharashtra is a big state, said the bench.

Modi had said he started new programmes with fresh and holistic approach, based on his experience as a chief minister. Modi complemented the FAO for playing an important role in raising farm production and making efforts towards eradicating starvation and malnutrition across the world, including in India in the last 75 years. The prime minister said the commemorative coin of Rs 75 denomination has been released in recognition of FAO’s contribution and services. He also thanked the FAO for supporting India’s proposal to declare 2023 as International Year of Millets and said this will boost the availability of coarse cereals and enhance the income of small and marginal farmers. The government, Modi said, is making efforts to increase the production of millets and boost consumer demand. The prime minister also dedicated to the nation 17 recently developed biofortified varieties of eight crops.

NEW DELHI, OCT 16 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the government will soon take a decision on revising the minimum age of marriage for girls after it receives report from the committee set up for this. The prime minister said the girls’ gross enrolment ratio in education has turned higher than that of boys for the first time in the country because of several efforts taken by the government in the last six years. Modi was addressing a video conference after releasing a commemorative coin of Rs 75 denomination on the 75th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). “There is an important deliberation going on to decide what should be the ideal age of marriage for daughters,” Modi said. The prime minister said he has been receiving letters from women from across the country, asking about the report of the committee and when the government will take a decision on it. “I want to assure them, the government will soon

OPINiON/EDITORIAL

Nagaland Post Vol. XXx NO. 313 Dimapur, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17, 2020

It doesn’t come easy

A

fter the consultative meeting with various apex Naga tribe hohos, CSOs and public leaders at Kohima on October 15, the state government has done what it was supposed to have done long back. Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio in his keynote address, has confirmed what had been spoken of weeks earlier- that the government of India had made it clear that it was time to have the voice of Naga people and their various tribal bodies, CSOs and public leaders heard. The government of India has made it clear even in July 2019 through the newly appointed Governor R.N.Ravi that negotiations cannot go on forever and a clear conclusion was long overdue. This also meant that there will be only one solution with Nagas. Much has been witnessed in Nagaland during the past decades over the protracted Naga political issue or, as many would prefer to use the term, ‘Naga political problem’. Thus, it may be said that the problem is the issue. And what should be the solution over the issue remains the problem. Endless negotiations have truly flummoxed the people who have been praying and fasting for decades for a peaceful and honorable solution acceptable to the people. The outcome of the meeting was to reaffirm the desire of the Naga people for a peaceful , acceptable and early solution after more than 23 years of endless negotiations. There is much that could be written about how this had been handled but suffice to say whatever happened was not entirely unexpected; no matter from which angle one looked at the entire issue. These are issues that have elicited different opinions through minds that see them with a some degree of enabling analytical concept which comes from a growing awareness about the world around them. In the past decades, political ideology was entrenched as inalienable and therefore un-debatable; there was no second opinion. It was either one either agreed with the common belief and if not, then a disagreement with the concept can only mean opposition. And disagreeing that meant opposing the political concept was considered as nothing but treachery and betrayal. Political ideology over the decades amid the disturbances, evolved into various descriptions which seem to suggest that it was relative to the changing times. Past and present politicians have spoken to assert their stand-many choosing only to sound politically correct but devoid of any new insight and direction but the oft beaten path of rhetoric. A few, on the other hand, suggest that too much time has been spent and lost and that it was time to move ahead together out of the shadows of political conflicts. If the need is an emerging realisation to move on, the question that arises is- whether the evolution of the thesis of the political ideology that leads to meeting aspirations on their own, could find overwhelming acceptance? The anti-thesis could prove difficult but in the long run, the synthesis of all could emerge only if voices of reason can penetrate the dogma that is resistive to new concepts. Today knowledge and analytical ability is no longer the preserve of a few but a generation of people who are prepared to take Naga society to higher levels if only wisdom dawns that it is time to come to senses and a time for a progressive and purposeful change.

DailyDevotion The Key to the Master’s Orders

Pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. —Matthew 9:38

The key to the missionary’s difficult task is in the hand of God, and that key is prayer, not work— that is, not work as the word is commonly used today, which often results in the shifting of our focus away from God. The key to the missionary’s difficult task is also not the key of common sense, nor is it the key of medicine, civilization, education, or even evangelization. The key is in following the Master’s orders— the key is prayer. “Pray the Lord of the harvest….” In the natural realm, prayer is not practical but absurd. We have to realize that prayer is foolish from the commonsense point of view. From Jesus Christ’s perspective, there are no nations, but only the world. How many of us pray without regard to the persons, but with regard to only one Person— Jesus Christ? He owns the harvest that is produced through distress and through conviction of sin. This is the harvest for which we have to pray that laborers be sent out to reap. We stay busy at work, while people all around us are ripe and ready to be harvested; we do not reap even one of them, but simply waste our Lord’s time in over-energized activities and programs. Suppose a crisis were to come into your father’s or your brother’s life— are you there as a laborer to reap the harvest for Jesus Christ? Is your response, “Oh, but I have a special work to do!” No Christian has a special work to do. A Christian is called to be Jesus Christ’s own, “a servant [who] is not greater than his master” (John 13:16), and someone who does not dictate to Jesus Christ what he intends to do. Our Lord calls us to no special work— He calls us to Himself. “Pray the Lord of the harvest,” and He will engineer your circumstances to send you out as His laborer.

state unleashes its power via nia: fr. stan its prey F r. Stan Lourduswamy, 83year old Jesuit priest, an organic intellectual and a social activist was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday, the 8th of October, 2020, supposedly the latest in the series of arrests across the country comprised of cross-section—intellectuals, lawyers and social activists alleged to have been involved in the Bhima-Koregaon case. Fr. Stan is a person who has always been compassionate to the poor and the vulnerable. He is a person of deep faith committed to the upliftment of the poor and the vulnerable. Known to me for more than four decades committed to serving the downtrodden for more than 50 years. A true democrat and believes in peace, equality, dignity and social justice. A rare persona blended with deep conviction to the power of the Gospel and authentic discipleship. He responded genuinely to the calling and vocation he opted for.The news that flashed byThe Hinduquoting Fr. Stan: “The nature of the present NIA investigation of me has nothing to do about Bhima Koregeon case in which I have been booked as a suspected accused and consequently raided twice. But it had everything to do to somehow establish that I am personally linked to extremist leftist forces and through me Bagaicha (his residential campus) is also relat-

ing some Maoists. I denied both these allegations in strongest terms.” According to The Hindu he has been questioned over several hours on July, n27,28, 29 and 30 and August 6 as NIA believe that he has Maoist links. Fr. Stan is the sixteenth person to have been arrested who seem to have actively been involved in the activities of the Maoists. NIA also alleges many things as he was part of those who have been languishing behind the bars; convenor of a frontal organization of the Maoists; having possessed propaganda material of the Maoists and so on which Fr. Stan had flatly denied. They took him to Mumbai. Fr. Stan reiterates that he was not present in Bhima Koregaon for which he was accused. In a video conference he without mincing world said that “...what is happening to me is not something unique happening to me alone, it is a broader process taking place all over the country. We all are aware how prominent intellectuals, lawyers, writers, poets, activists, student leaders are all put in jail because they have expressed their dissent or raised questions about the ruling powers of India,”. In one of the moving statements he said that he is part of “the process” and in a way happy to be so because he is not a silent spectator and is part of the game. I’m ready to pay the price whatever be it.”

Committed to the tribal upliftment as he was engaged in educating the Advasi communities of their rights and voicing for the rights in the tribal belts in Jharkhand for over three decades. He did address various issues of the Adivasi communities face particularly their land, forest and labour rights. When he along with tribal leaders started questioning the non-implementation of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, which stipulated setting up of a Tribes Advisory Council with members solely of the Adivasi community for their protection, well-being and development in the State. Almost resonating self-rule and governance that adds dignity and honour to the eco-space they belong to. What crime did he commit and why the State is after the Dalit intellectual land human rights activists? He has been a critical voice for the Advasi communities who questioned the policies and programs of the governments—both the Centre and the State accusing him was part of group involved in waging war against India. He spent his lifetime for fighting for the development of the Adivasis. His arrest was arbitrary and as we have been experiencing in recent times that the State first arrests and then frames charges and then one should languish in the jail without knowing when the trial would take. When anyone questions and points their fingers at

the government for its policies, the State shows its real colour. The State was irked when Fr. Stan challenged the “indiscriminate” arrest of thousands of young Adivasis and moolvasis with investigating agencies labelling them as “Naxals”. The State is coming out ruthlessly with open fangs when intellectuals, social activists and civil society raise difficult questions. He has always been a critical voice of the region expressing solidarity on issues that concerns the Adivasis. In a democracy peaceful protests are allowed within the framework of the Constitution. A firm believer of justice and democratic rights. How can he be arrested on the groundssedition that he planned to waging war against India? This is indeed bizarre that lacks any substance. He spent his lifetime for the upliftment of the Adivasis within the constitutional framework. The State first arrests and then frames charges and so that they would be languishing in the jails not knowing when the trial would start—years or decades! The State was irked when Fr. Stan challenged the “indiscriminate” arrest of thousands of young Adivasis and moolvasis with the investigating agencies labelling them as “Naxals”. The State is coming out ruthlessly with open fangs when intellectuals, social activists and civil society raise difficult questions. And those point out the failures

and deficiencies of the programs and policies of the government they are branded as anti-nationals and booked under sedition. He has always been a prophetic voice of the region expressing solidarity on issues that concerns the Adivasis. In a democracy peaceful protests are allowed within the framework of the Constitution. As a firm believer of justice and democratic rights, he voiced along with others whenever the rights of the Adivasis are trampled. The irony is that when the Adivasis raise their voices and question the State and the ruling class and so look out for those who are behind the empowerment process of the Adivasis. The State wants the vulnerable communities particularly the Adivasis in mute-state and should live in a culture of silence. When they start asking difficult question the State clamps all sorts of laws against those who they consider as “nuisance value”. The State is bent on taking on those who raise difficult questions showing zero tolerance. More such arrests are bound to happen in the coming days. The State nowadays is showing its true brute force against the writers, intellectuals, activists and others who question the government on issues of grave concern. As citizens we are bound to show solidarity to those who stand for truth to power. Dr. John Mohan Razu

Forget China to go solo & go local Public Message on the Indo-

W

ith this global pandemic, China is fast losing its business relevance. Globally, India is now looked at as an alternate global manufacturing hub. India should be ready in a couple of years; otherwise, the focus will shift to Taiwan or Vietnam. MSME road map for the coming decades should be aligned to facilitate the sector’s growth. MSME has already succeeded in gaining the required focus with a new head in the MSME sector. Finding a possible option to do away with China from the manufacturing value chain ultimately is a strategic call and a longterm process. This cannot be achieved in a short-term manner. China has put in many strategic efforts to establish its manufacturing might globally, making the entire ecosystem Chinese dependent. It made others learn to live with ease with their lowest price and faster doorstep delivery, competing local markets. By understanding customer pain points, they have developed a customized export model to mitigate their remote existence. Their business model is tightly coupled with the destination countries’ value chain to dominate the customer countries’ production process. The World is planning the strategic decoupling of China from its respective manufacturing ecosystem. Over the years, China has developed a strong ground connection through an unbeatable competitive advantage with the globe’s manufacturing value chain. Their reach to the sector has been expanded beyond China’s domestic boundary, integrating all domestic stakeholders with the global counterpart at respective levels. They effortlessly increased and created a seamless production process reaching all the international customers’ doorstep using their ahead of time thinking. This journey to the manufacturing world was predominantly unopposed until Corona came into light. India

imported goods worth $ 62.40 billion from Apr’19 to Feb’20 indicates our dependence on them. They are supplying goods worth around $ 2500 billion to the entire World. The world market is now seeking to have a possible alternative in the fast-changing supply chain domain. Regionalization is fast replacing globalization under the slogan ‘go-local.’ They have divided the World into numbers of segments based on marketspecific needs. India and its subcontinent markets are classified as price-sensitive customer zones, whereas the European market is quality sensitive. This segmentation strategy made them more customer-oriented and brought them closer to the customers’ pain point resulting in overwhelming success. They finally became a major exporter of the World and predominantly built their economy around the export market. If taken in haste, the World will be severely impacted by a short supply of inventories with decoupling decisions. It is seemingly absurd to snap any ties due to their long association facilitating the global Industry. Many business setups in India have become relevant based on the conducive pricing they receive from China for their input materials. Alternatively, indigenous sourcing might be an un-viable option due to the high cost and lack of time to develop compatible alternate manufacturers. Chinese dependency should be eliminated through a planned withdrawal process to avoid unnecessary distress on India’s business ecosystem like a nuclear plant’s decommissioning. China’s entry to the global market was not an overnight decision. They strategically penetrated the market through a comprehensive market invasion strategy. Their Govt. has subsidized their manufacturing cost through various incentives. Power tariffs are very low for the manufacturing sectors. Besides Power, they are provided

Can’t afford to let our guard down

‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ amidst COVID-19 pandemic At a time when the whole world is battling the deadly coronavirus pandemic, India seems determined to head towards a self-sufficient and self-reliant economy with new goals and missions with a vision that is taking shape slowly and steadily. Converting a deadly crisis into an opportunity, India has launched the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme. India is politically free but economic freedom is still a distant aspiration to many poor and downtrodden. Economic freedom will come through self-reliance - these are the pillars on which the poor need to be uplifted. The programs announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government have incorporated the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi to create an environment that enables the poor and farmers to gain self-reliance and live with dignity. Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, which translates to ‘self-reliant India’ or ‘self-sufficient India’, is the vision of the Narendra Modi of making India “a bigger and more important part of the global economy”, pursuing policies that are efficient, competitive and resilient, and being self-sustaining and self-generating. Aatmanirbhar Bharat does not mean “self-containment”, “isolating away from the world” or being “protectionist”. The first mention of this came in the form of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ or ‘Self-Reliant India Mission’during the announcement of India’s COVID–19 pandemic related economic package on May 12, 2020. The five pillars of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ are stated as economy, infrastructure, technology-driven systems, vibrant demography and demand. Aatmanirbhar Bharat envisages a self-reliant economy, whereby the national needs could be met domestically. The demand is to be met by the supply created through an enabling environment of ‘aatmanirbharta’. It doesn’t mean policy of isolation or protectionism but a policy of support and facilitation to make India realise its true potential. As part of the detailed and comprehensive Aatmanirbhar Bharat package, numerous government decisions have taken place. To name just a few - increasing the scope for private participation in the Defence sector and promoting the solar energy sector. Gandhiji’s vision of self-reliance: Here we can recall, recollect and reconnect the works and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi’s push for economic freedom and self-reliance goes back to 1915, when he first began to use khadi in Sabarmati Ashram. Today, PM Narendra Modi has been able to fuse his lived experiences with the teachings of Gandhi. Modi has been able to build a strong and effective manifesto that focusses on empowering the poor and instilling a sense of dignity in them. The idea of Swachh Bharat in Modi’s first term made cleanliness and access to sanitation a universal agenda which was inspired directly from Gandhi’s own life and teachings. Meanwhile, the government of India is taking up various steps to ensure safety of its people and making sure that preparations are made to face threats posed not only by COVID-19, but also by any similar possibility in future. The Indian government today, through its various policy and programmes, is trying to realise the vision of Mahatma Gandhi, which is based on simple ideas of truth, non-violence, swadeshi and self-reliance. His vision of Swachhta, self-reliance, development of Bharat, healthy India, khadi, etc., have been incorporated in the schemes of Swachh Bharat, Make in India, Fit India, promotion of naturopathy and yoga, promotion of khadi as a global brand, etc. PM’s vision: While giving his speech during the 74th Independence Day celebration, PM Modi gave a call for reducing imports and pushing exports of finished products in place of raw material. He said that the country will have to move forward with the mantra of ‘Make in India’ as well as ‘Make for World’. “Aatmanirbhar Bharat is no longer merely a word but has become a mantra and captured people’s imagination,” he said while adding that many concerns are raised about it and acknowledged the challenges ahead. There are “crores of solutions” offered by the country’s citizens to “lakhs of challenges”. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, 130 crore Indians have pledged to build an ‘AtmaNirbhar Bharat’. During his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’ too, the Prime Minister also spoke about how the new farm bills would benefit the farmers and help create a self-reliant India. The country’s agricultural sector’s resilience during the coronavirus pandemic was a reflection of its farmers’ strength, the “foundation of Aatmanirbhar Bharat”, or self-reliant India, he added. “Farmers are playing a major role in the efforts towards self-reliance. If the farmers are strong the country will be strong.” That India has the capacity to be self-reliant but only lacked appropriate economic policies and perhapsmotivation, is apparent from the fact that the nation went from zero production of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits, N-95 masks and other basic equipment in the fight against COVID-19, till March 2020, to two lakh PPE kits and two lakh N95 masks per day, within two months of time. The country which was earlier fully dependent on imports for these basic pharmaceutical items, became self-reliant within two months time. It cannot be doubted that Gandhiji’s vision of Self-reliant villages can become a reality only when the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Mission becomes a mass movement. Given the sad reality that majority of India’s population lives below the poverty line and that the coronavirus pandemic has been worsening their lives, it is important that the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Mission becomes a mass movement and deals with the core issue. It is time to convert a crisis into an opportunity and finish the unfinished task of the freedom movement. Pramod Ningombam (Senior Journalist & Former News Editor of The People’s Chronicle) …

Muivah said that the NSCN (I-M) still has patience, although they have been talking for 23 years. He repeatedly said, without giving details, that on many points an understanding or agreement had been reached earlier but now it is Ravi who appears to be backing away. In fact, Muivah, who began the interview criticizing Jawaharlal Nehru for his intransigence and his refusal to accept that the Nagas have a unique history and identity, towards the end started to compare Narendra Modi to Nehru and suggested that his government, today, is similarly intransigent.

Schedule of the constitution, for Naga inhabited areas of Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh, is acceptable as a transition and as a first step. However, the goal remains the integration of all Naga areas in Nagalim. He also said that Ravi has accepted that this is only a transitional measure and that all Naga areas must be integrated. Muivah also spoke particularly strongly and passionately of the loss of trust in Ravi. The Saral Jeevan Bima will have no maturity benefit and will have a 45-day waiting period. On exclusions in the policy, the guidelines said “only suicide clause, as per extant regulations”. It further said the product should be offered to individuals without restrictions on gender, place of residence, travel, occupation or educational qualifications. The regulator feels such a standard product will reduce instances of mis-selling and disputes at the time of claim settlement. In its circular, the Irdai asked all the life insurance companies to file the product with the Irdai latest by December 31 this year.

(From p-1) “Their unique history and identity means that they have to have their own constitution”, he said. He also said repeatedly and emphatically that the Nagas would never be part of the Indian Union. Muivah also repeatedly spoke of the Nagas and the government of India as two entities. At one point he even spoke of them as two separate nations, The Wire stated. He said they could share sovereignty with each other and added that during the last 23 years of talks the two have come close to each other but they still remain separate entities. He emphatically stood by the line he took on August 14, 2019, a date the NSCN (I-M) regards as Naga Independence Day, that Nagas “will not merge with India”. Speaking about NSCN (IM)’s insistence that all Naga inhabited areas outside the present boundaries of Nagaland must integrate with Nagaland to create what the NSCN calls ‘Nagalim’, Muivah said that this remained an important part of the NSCN’s position. He said that Ravi’s proposed Pan Naga Hoho, a cultural body with no political role or executive authority, and Naga Regional Territorial Councils, under the Sixth

Dimapur has highest TB cases in the state (From p-1) The minster has exuded confidence to carry out the campaign for the purpose of engaging the elected representative where the members play a major role in supporting the efforts of TB programme in the state. In his brief opening remark, state TB officer (NTEP) Dr. Robin Lotha appealed to the members to read the booklet and disseminate the information about TB wherever possible to ensure that Nagaland becomes TB-free state by 2025. Delivering the purpose of the handbook, state IEC officer (NTEP) Thungchanbeni M. Humtsoe said the main aim was for the proactive engagement for more elected representatives such as MLAs, Zila Parishad, VDB members and Gram Sabha. According to Humtsoe, the involvement of elected representatives would help in addressing social stigma and promoting advocacy and community involvement in TB programme. She exuded confidence that the handbook would be helpful and useful in conducting advocacy and community meetings in fighting against “TB Harega Desh Jeetega”. Meanwhile, during an interaction, Robin Lotha said for 2019 the department could achieve beyond the given target. However, he said that in 2020 it was not certain to achieve the target of 5000 since many of the officials working under NTEP were engaged in COVID duty. He, however, that said all efforts were on for better performance since its officials were rolling back to the department.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday said that several economic indicators in India are witnessing a ‘V-shaped’ recovery. In her address at the Plenary Meeting of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the ministerial-level committee of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), through video-conference, Sitharaman outlined the measures undertaken by the Indian government under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ package to foster a quick and more robust economic recovery in India. A Finance Ministry statement noted that that she mentioned that the ‘Vshaped’ pattern of recovery is being seen in several high-frequency indicators including manufacturing PMI that reached the highest level in last eight years in the month of September 2020, presenting a strong recovery prospect for the manufacturing sector.

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): Hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic, the global crude oil market has been largely subdued this year. The upcoming US presidential election, which always has a significant impact on markets across the board, will also play a crucial role in oil price movement, given the divergent view of both the candidates on oil and energy. According to a report by Motilal Oswal Invesment Services, President Donald Trump’s re-election would bring stability in prices, while Democrat candidate Joe Biden’s victory is likely to bring uncertainty and volatility. “Crude oil investors are facing a confused stance as President Trump’s presidency brings stability and the Presidency under Biden might bring uncertainty and more volatility in the market,” it said. The report noted that if Trump is re-elected, prices may remain in levels of $45 as he would like to keep prices in this level to make sure gasoline prices remain in control, which remains a main concern of the US taxpayers.

New clashes in Nagorno-Karabakh Pompeo says Turkey makes situation worse YEREVAN/BAKU, OCT 16 (Agencies): Armenian and Azeri forces fought new clashes on Friday, defying hopes of ending nearly three weeks of fighting over the NagornoKarabakh enclave, and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo blamed Turkey for inflaming the situation by arming the Azeris. The worst outbreak of violence in the South Caucasus since Armenia and Azerbaijan went to war over the enclave in the 1990s, the fighting risks creating a humanitarian disaster, especially if it draws in Russia and Turkey. Nagorno-Karabakh is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan but populated and governed by ethnic Armenians. Turkey has increased military exports sixfold this year to its close ally Azerbaijan. Russia, is close to both sides but has a defence pact with Armenia. News agency RIA reported the Russian navy had started planned military exercises in the Caspian Sea. There were further

signs on Friday that a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreed last Saturday to allow the sides to swap detainees and the bodies of those killed had all but broken down. Armenia and Azerbaijan each accused the other of launching attacks, and each said it had the upper hand. gard for the humanitarian truce”. He added that Azeri forces had been repelled and had suffered significant losses. Azerbaijan’s defence ministry said NagornoKarabakh forces had been forced to retreat and Azeri forces retained the advantage along the line of contact that divides the sides. Reuters could not independently verify the reports. Baku also accused Yerevan of a missile attack on Ordubad in Nakhchivan autonomous province,

a region which belongs to Azerbaijan but is surrounded by Armenia and Iran. Armenia denied such an attack. The Nagorno-Karabakh defence ministry reported 29 more military casualties, bringing to 633 the number of servicemen killed since fighting broke out on Sept. 27. Azerbaijan does not disclose military casualties. The Azeri prosecutor-general’s office said 47 civilians had been killed and 222 wounded. The hostilities, close to pipelines in Azerbaijan

that carry gas and oil to global markets, are stoking concern in Europe and the United States that Turkey and Russia, already at loggerheads over Syria and Libya, will be dragged in. Pompeo said Turkey had worsened the conflict by providing resources to Azerbaijan. A diplomatic resolution was needed, rather than “third-party countries coming in to lend their firepower to what is already a powder keg of a situation,” he said in an interview with broadcaster WSB Atlanta. Ankara accuses Armenia of illegally occupying Azeri territory. Armenia says Turkey has encouraged Azerbaijan to pursue a military solution to the conflict, putting Armenian civilians in danger. Armenia’s foreign ministry said Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan had spoken by phone with United Nations SecretaryGeneral António Guterres, asking the international community to “neutralise” Azeri actions which he said posed “an existential danger of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh”. Meanwhile Iran tweeted that its foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif had offered the Azeri side Teheran’s help with the peace process.

Kyrgyzstan’s Prime Minister becomes acting President MOSCOW, OCT 16 (AP): Kyrgyzstan’s prime minister became the acting head of state Friday in the wake of the president’s resignation amid turmoil sparked by a disputed parliamentary election. Supporters of newly appointed Prime Minister Sadyr Zhaparov, rallied in the capital, Bishkek, and threatened to storm government buildings, forcing President Sooronbai Jeenbekov to step down Thursday. Under the constitution, the speaker of parliament would be next in line, but he refused to serve as caretaker leader under protesters’ pressure, allowing Zhaparov to claim the top office. The fast-moving developments mark the third time in 15 years that a leader of the Central Asian country has been forced out by a popular uprising. The unrest that gripped the country of 6.5 million people on the border with China was triggered by the October 4 parliamentary election that was swept by pro-government parties. Supporters of opposition groups dismissed the results, pointing at vote-buying and other irregularities, and took over government buildings hours after the polls closed. The protesters

Sadyr Zhaparov

freed several opposition leaders, including Zhaparov, who was serving an 11-year jail term. The Central Election Commission nullified the election results and rival regional clans begun jockeying for power, their supporters swarming the capital and occasionally clashing with each other, hurling stones. President Jeenbekov, who had introduced a state of emergency in Bishkek and deployed troops in the capital, first dismissed calls to resign, but he announced Thursday that he was stepping down to avoid bloodshed. Zhaparov’s supporters quickly besieged the parliament to discourage its speaker, Kanat Isayev, from taking over as acting president. Isayev formally announced during Friday’s parliament session that he

wouldn’t take the top office, clearing the path for Zhaparov to take the helm. Zhaparov said the country must quickly hold the new parliamentary and presidential elections, but specific dates haven’t been set yet. The parliament on Friday lifted the state of emergency in Bishkek that Jeenbekov introduced earlier this week amid the unrest that fueled fears of the violence and looting that accompanied previous uprisings. Such concerns subsided as the troops deployed around the capital and the situation has stabilized, Stores and banks that were closed last week have reopened. As in the uprisings that ousted presidents in 2005 and 2010, the current unrest has been driven by clan rivalries that dominate the country’s politics. Kyrgyzstan, one of the poorest countries to emerge from the former Soviet Union, is a member of Russia-dominated economic and security alliances, hosts a Russian air base and depends on Moscow’s economic support. It formerly was the site of a US air base that was used in the war in Afghanistan.

China’s Covid-19 vaccine is safe, Study finds 4 drugs have little to no effect on COVID: WHO prompts antibody response: Lancet

BEIJING, OCT 16 (IANS): Chinese Covid-19 vaccine candidate -- BBIBP-CorV -- that is expected to completely inactivate the SARSCoV-2 virus, is safe and elicits an antibody response, a study published in The Lancet has found. A previous clinical trial reported similar results for a different vaccine that is also based on inactivated whole SARS-CoV-2 virus, but in that study the vaccine was only tested on people aged under 60 years. The latest study reported in The Lancet Infectious Diseases journal included participants aged

between 18 and 80 years, and found that antibody responses were induced in all recipients. Participants aged 60 and over were slower to respond, taking 42 days before antibodies were detected in all recipients compared with 28 days for participants aged 18-59. “Protecting older people is a key aim of a successful Covid-19 vaccine as this age group is at greater risk of severe illness from the disease,” said study author Xiaoming Yang from the Beijing Institute of Biological Products Company Limited in China.

However, vaccines are sometimes less effective in this group because the immune system weakens with age. “It is therefore encouraging to see that BBIBPCorV induces antibody responses in people aged 60 and older, and we believe this justifies further investigation,” Yang added. The BBIBP-CorV vaccine used in the study reported here is based on a sample of the virus that was isolated from a patient in China. Stocks of the virus were grown in the lab using cell lines and then inactivated using a chemical called beta-proprionolactone. BBIBP-CorV includes the killed virus mixed with another component, aluminium hydroxide, which is called an adjuvant because it is known to boost immune responses. The first phase of the study was designed to find the optimal safe dose for BBIBP-CorV.

GENEVA, OCT 16 (AP): The UN health agency says the world’s largest randomised trial of COVID-19 treatments found “conclusive evidence” that remdesivir, a drug used to treat US President Donald Trump when he fell ill, has little or no effect on severe cases. The World Health Organisation announced Friday the long-awaited results of its six-month “Solidarity UK and EU. Thai PM rejects calls to resign, braces for renewed protest

Pro-democracy demonstrators gather in an intersection of a business district in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday. (AP/PTI)

Prayuth’s government declared a strict new state of emergency for the capital on Thursday, a day after protesters gathered in a different part of the city heckled a royal motorcade. Such actions are unprecedented in Thailand, where those waiting for a royal motorcade regularly sit on the ground or prostrate themselves. The state of emergency outlaws public gatherings of more than five people and bans the dissemination of news that is deemed to threaten national security. It also gives authorities broad powers, including detaining people at length without charge.

Some 10,000 protesters defied the decree Thursday to rally at the Bangkok intersection. A number of protest leaders have already been rounded up since the decree went into effect. On

Friday another two activists were arrested under a law covering violence against the queen for their alleged part in the heckling of the motorcade. They could face up to life in prison if convicted. The protest movement was launched in March by university students and its original core demands were new elections, changes in the constitution to make it more democratic, and an end to intimidation of activists. The protesters charge that Prayuth, who as army commander led a 2014 coup that toppled an elected government, was returned to power unfairly in last year’s general election because laws had been changed to favor a pro-military party.

BANGKOK, OCT 16 (AP): Thailand’s prime minister rejected calls for his resignation on Friday as his government stepped up efforts to stop student-led protesters from rallying in the capital for a second day in defiance of a strict state of emergency. Police closed roads and put up barricades around a major Bangkok intersection where the protesters have vowed to gather again to push their core demands, including that Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha leave office, the constitution be amended and the nation’s monarchy undergo reform. Police in riot gear moved into the area, while malls in the normally busy shopping district were closing early. Nearby mass transit stations were being closed to stop crowds of protesters from getting near the area. In addition to the security measures, heavy monsoon rains threatened to keep crowd numbers lower than the thousands that gathered the night before. The student protesters said they would simply rally just down the street at another large intersection.

the European Medicines Agency is now reviewing whether remdesivir is causing kidney problems as reported by some patients. Mar tin Landray, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Oxford University, said the WHO trial results for hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir were in line with a previous British study he co-led. “The big story is the

finding that remdesivir produces no meaningful impact on survival,” he said in a statement. He said the drug is now recommended in some countries but there have been significant concerns about supply, cost and access. “This is a drug that has to be given by intravenous infusion for 5 to 10 days,” noting it costs about USD 2,550 per treatment course.

HBO, WB movie channels to go off air in India on Dec 15

T

he popular English film channels HBO and WB will be discontinued in India, along with four other South Asian countries with effect from December 15. The decision was announced by WarnerMedia International, who have decided to shut down the HBO SD and HD linear movie channels in India and Pakistan, as well as the WB linear movie channel in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Maldives. The entertainment conglomerate will continue to operate and invest more in its popular kids

brands, Cartoon Network and POGO, in the South Asia region, with focus on increasing local animation production in this region. The closure of HBO and WB, which enjoyed strong positions in the English content market, is an indicator of the growth of OTT platforms, especially amid the ongoing pandemic. The company is set to launch its own streaming platform, HBO Max soon. “After 20 years of successes for the HBO linear movie channel in South Asia and more than a decade with the WB

linear movie channel, this was a difficult decision to make. The pay TV industry landscape and the market dynamics have shifted dramatically, and the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the need for further change,” said Siddharth Jain, senior vice president and managing director for WarnerMedia’s entertainment networks in South Asia. “WarnerMedia has a strong interest in India and are committed to assessing optimal opportunities to serve valued customers here,” he added. For now, HBO has a content syndication partnership with Disney’s streaming platform in India, and offers their content through the platform. “If you want to be a strong global player, you have to be strong in AsiaPacific. In India, we don’t have the scale that we want and where we have to be. In order to get there, the workhorse will be HBO Max,” said Gerhard Zeiler, head of WarnerMedia International, sometime back, hinting at the release of the streaming platform in the country. (IANS)

It is more important than ever to recognise those in the fashion industry who played an important role in this extraordinary year, proving the compassion and resilience of our industry. “This is what The Fashion Awards 2020 have set to do, by spotlighting those who have shown leadership and creative resilience over the past year.” (Contactmusic)

Jon Bon Jovi has ‘evolved’ into new lyrics

J

on Bon Jovi couldn’t have written a record like ‘2020’ when he was younger. The 58-year-old Bon Jovi frontman has tackled subjects including Black Lives Matter, the coronavirus pandemic, fake news and mass shootings on the group’s latest album and he admitted he’s finally in a place to do so because he has “grown up and evolved”. He said: “I’ve grown up and evolved. I wouldn’t have written about this in the mid-Eighties because my focus at 21 to 25 was to

be a successful singer in a rock and roll band. As 30 comes, then 40 and 50, life starts to change. “If I was attempting to write a topical record and call it 2020, I had to include a Covid song and, in light of George Floyd’s death, I had to write about that as well.” A track on the album, ‘American Reckoning’, explores the aftermath of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of police officers after Jon felt “crushed” by the story, but he admitted he needed to be “very care-

ful” when writing the song because of his own “white privilege”. He told The Sun newspaper: “I couldn’t believe that this was in close-up, on film, with the audio, as a big, strong man cried out for his mom with his dying breaths. “If that didn’t move you as a human, I question who you are and where is your soul? “I was crushed watching that and it took me back to my notebook. I was very careful with the song, to make sure that I got it right,

and I wanted to say something from my heart. “But I had to be very aware of what I was singing because I realised that I’m probably the poster boy of white privilege. “I’m old, I’m white, I’m wealthy and I’m a celebrity, so the chances of a run-in with the police are slim, you know what I mean? “I’ve never had to have ‘the talk’ with my children. It has never crossed my mind. “At least now these things are being discussed in the open, honestly, and with more volume than ever before. I can only pray that we can get beyond the colour of a person’s skin.” The album also features a personal moment in ‘Story Of Love’ which the ‘Always’ hitmaker - who has three sons with wife Dorothea - hopes fans can relate to. He said: “I’m writing about my family and I hope you think it’s about your family too. “I couldn’t have written a song like that at 24. But when you think about mortality, your own kids and your parents getting older, there’s a time and a place for it. I’m there now.” (Contactmusic)

Earth’s toughest creature is even more resilient

E

arth’s toughest creatures — the tiny tardigrades — include species that can survive deadly UV radiation by glowing in the dark, a study has found. Tardigrades — also known as ‘moss piglets’, or ‘water bears’ — are bizarre, microscopic water-dwelling animals capable of surviving in extreme environments. They can tolerate heats of 300°F (150°C) to the coldness of space, dry out and revive years later and stand pressures six times those found in the Mariana Trench. And a study last year revealed that the resilient little critters can even survive the equivalent amount of nuclear radiation as 25 hours at Chernobyl’s ground zero. However, researchers from India have reported finding a new genus — dubbed ‘Paramacrobiotus’ — which can also resist germicidal levels of UV exposure. It does this by employing a protective fluorescent shield that absorbs the damaging ultraviolet radiation and emits it back out as harmless blue light. ‘Our study showed that specimens of Paramacrobiotus [...] exhibit natural fluorescence under UV light,

which protects tardigrades against the lethal doses of UV radiation,’ biochemist Harikumar Suma and colleagues wrote in their paper. The tiny creature, the team from the Indian Institute of Science explained, ‘has probably evolved this fluorescence mechanism to counter [the] high ultraviolet radiation of tropical southern India — UV index can reach up to 10.’ ‘The UV dose in this location — Bengaluru, India — on a typical summer day is about four kilojoules per square metre.’ The tardigrades the team studied were isolated from a moss sample grown on a concrete wall in their home town of Bengaluru. il Yachty is being sued after he was allegedly involved in a physical altercation at Rolling Loud festival in Los Angeles last year. The rapper, real name Miles McCollum, is being sued by a man called Jimmy Quivac – who claims that he was assaulted by McCollum and his crew. According to TMZ, Quivac is suing the rapper for assault and battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress. He claims that Yachty and his crew attacked him as he attempted to enter the festival. He was reportedly alone at the time of the incident and trying to make his way through a large crowd when he heard someone yell at him for bumping into them. According to the publication, Quivac alleges that Yachty then punched him and his crew stomped him while lying on the ground. The incident is said to have left Quivac with injuries to K Y M C

his arm, hand, and wrist. An initial video of the incident was obtained by TMZ in 2019, and appears to show Yachty involved in a verbal altercation, before the incident turns physical. On December 16, the rapper posted a since-deleted video to explain his account of what allegedly happened before the fight. He said: “Last night as I was leaving out the festival, a guy walked in the middle of my group of people and pushed me. “Not tapped me, like pushed me out the way, you know, screaming all type of stuff, you know what I’m saying, being very disrespectful.” He later added, “[The video] doesn’t show any of that… It looks like we’re just picking a fight. I’m not a problematic person, I don’t just pick fights with people.” Lil Yachty’s last album came in ‘Lil Boat 3’, which arrived in May 2020. (NME)

to protect other organisms from harmful conditions, biologist Łukasz Kaczmarek — who was not involved in the work — told the Guardian. The expert from Poland’s Adam Mickiewicz University added, however, that the team had not identified the exact substance responsible for the UV protection, raising the possibility that protective proteins — not the fluorescence — might be responsible. ‘We also do not know if it is a characteristic feature of the species studied or rather for the majority of tardigrades exposed in their natural environment to high doses of UV radiation,’ Dr Kaczmarek told the Guardian. Former AC/DC bassist Paul Matters dies

A

ctor Arjun Mathur has pledged to donate his organs, and says he also wishes to encourage young people and bust myths around the cause. For Arjun, getting associated with a cause of organ donation was more of a personal affair. His elder brother suffered from an ailment that left him in the need of a kidney. They had to wait for many years to find a donor. In early 2020, the actor’s family managed to find the right match and his brother was operated on. “Organ donation is a cause I feel strongly about. It’s disturbing to see a noble cause like this still being clouded by myths and misinformation that is leading to reluctance and apprehension among people. It is about time we, as a society, work towards fixing this issue and trigger a positive change,” said Arjun, who is the cause ambassador for “MTV-ORGAN Daan”. Recently, Arjun was nominated for an International Emmy Award at the upcoming 2020 edition of the global gala. He made the cut in the Best Performance By An Actor list for his role of the gay wedding planner Karan Mehra in the web series “Made In Heaven”.

Lil Yachty sued for assault after Matt Damon teases Ben Affleck for losing Batman role to Pattinson altercation at Rolling Loud festival

M

att Damon has teased Ben Affleck about losing his role as Batman to Robert Pattinson. Pattinson will take on the iconic character in forthcoming film The Batman. Damon and Affleck were appearing as part of a fundraiser for the Eastern Congo Initiative and Water. org, and Damon couldn’t resist having a dig at his friend – who played Batman in 2016’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice – for losing the role. While speaking about how they could advertise the fundraiser, Affleck said: “Tell something they’re interested in like, ‘Hey, come see me Jason Bourne… Batman and…” when Damon interrupted, saying: “Robert Pattinson’s coming?” Affleck responded: “No. Jeremy Renner will be there, though,” joking about Renner playing Bourne in 2012’s The Bourne Legacy.” Damon then took an-

that when they exposed Paramacrobiotus to UV radiation for 15 minutes — enough to kill another tardigrade species, H. exemplaris — the new genus not only survived, but surprisingly emitted a blue glow. When the team coated H. exemplaris and the roundworm, ‘Caenorhabditis elegans’ in fluorescent extracts from Paramacrobiotus, they found that they were able to transfer some of the protection. After a few days of UV exposure, half of the treated H. exemplaris remained alive despite having been given a dose that should have been lethal. The study adds to previous work showing that substances produced by tardigrades have the potential

“When I was living in Toronto he would drop into the house in the late hours to party and he loved to party. “In late ’75 after he departed AC/DC we played together in a one off band called ‘Miss Australia Band’ at a gig on a ferry on Lake Macquarie. “I moved to Sunshine on the lake further south and Paul would drop in to chill whenever he was in the area. I recall he could always make me laugh when he was in the mood.” Opening up on his departure, Matters previously revealed that it was the band’s singer at the time, the late Bon Scott, who gave

him his marching orders. “Bon got out of the back of the truck and told me I wasn’t going back to Melbourne with them,” he said. “We were up in Sydney doing a concert for school kids. So I didn’t play that day. I just turned around and didn’t say a word to him. I turned around and walked out.” Author Jesse Fink, who previously interviewed Matters, added: “Another former AC/DC musician has died: bassist Paul Matters. RIP, mate #acdc”. AC/DC will release their seventeenth album, Power Up, next month. (NME)

Mohammedan Sporting Club returned to I-League after 7 years

K A LYA N I , O CT 1 6 (AGENCIES): Mohammedan Sporting Club has qualified for the 2020-21 season of the I-League after winning three qualifiers, reports Sportskeeda. The Black Panthers defeated Bhawanipore FC 2-0 at the Kalyani Stadium on Friday, courtesy of goals from Vanlalbiaa Chhangte and Gani Nigam either side of the half-time whistle. After both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal joined the Indian Super League, merging with ATK and getting backed by Shree Cements respectively, football fans feared for an ILeague season without a traditional Kolkata giant participant. Those fears will not come to pass as Mohammedan SC have now qualified for the ILeague. Early in the match,

a well-rehearsed free-kick routine from Mohammedan ended with Vanlalbiaa Chhangte smashing the ball across the face of the goal, but Shilton Paul kept the ball out of the net. Philip Adjah struck the post from a corner at the 25th-minute mark. The ball ricocheted off the post, hit Saiful Rehman, and almost went over the goalline, but just brushed the post on the way out. Mohameddan opened the scoring on the night with a beautiful exchange of passes between Willis Plaza and Chhangte. A clever flick from Sheikh Faiaz sent Chhangte through on Paul, and he rounded off the goalkeeper and finished into the empty net. The talented winger has always had a knack of scoring crucial goals, and is being touted as the best 'emerging player' of the

tournament. Gani Nigam scored from another free-kick routine at the end of the third quarter, as he received the ball on the back-post and slammed it over the line. Shilton Paul got his hands on the ball, but couldn't keep it out of his net. Mohammedan started their I-League qualifiers campaign on a nervy note, as they edged past Garwhal FC 1-0 courtesy of an injury-time goal from Munmun Lugun. The favorites of the tournament then routed ARA FC 4-1, with a brace from Nepalese striker Abhishek Rijal and one goal each from Willis Plaza and Sheikh Faiaz. The 2020-21 I-League season is still a couple of months away, but Mohammedan SC fans will be eagerly waiting to see their team back in the tournament.

Ultimate Table Tennis postponed to 2021 due to Covid-19

New Delhi, Oct 16 (IANS): Mumbai City FC on Friday confirmed the signing of forward Farukh Choudhary ahead of the seventh edition of the Indian Super League (ISL). The Indian international joins the Islanders on a three-year contract. The 23-year-old, a native of Ambernath in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, can play on either side in attack as well as down the middle. Choudhary started his youth career with the Diamonds Football Club, and moved on to Air India’s U-15 side and Central Bank of India in the Mumbai District Football Association. After a stint with the Pune FC U-19s, he made the switch to senior football with Lonestar Kashmir in 2015-16. “The vision in place at Mumbai City was a key factor and I am confident this is the right step for me and my development at this stage of my career. I’m excited to start this new chapter of my life. We’re going to miss playing in front of our fans this season, but we’ll bring the spirit of Mumbai to the pitch here and we’ll be playing for them,” said Choudhary in a statement. In 2016, he made the move to Kerala Blasters and subsequently featured for Mumbai FC on loan in the I-League before joining Jamshedpur FC in the 2017 ISL Draft. K Y M C

Ruthless MI crush KKR by 8 wickets

Abu Dhabi, Oct 16 (PTI): The Mumbai Indians juggernaut rolled on unabated as they recorded their fifth straight win with an eight-wicket mauling of Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL here on Friday. A tidy bowling effort by Mumbai Indians ensured that KKR were restricted to 148 for five after an unbeaten 53 by pace spearhead Pat Cummins. Then, the defending champions rode on a blistering 44-ball 78 by Quinton de Kock, to chase down the target with 3.1 overs to spare. De Kock, who struck nine fours and three sixes and skipper Rohit Sharma (35 off 36 balls), laid the foundation for the emphatic win with their 94-run first-wicket stand. The two openers took the KKR attack to cleansers with de Kock being the more aggressive one. The South African notched up his fifty in just 25 balls, with a maximum over deep-square leg. It rained boundaries for Mumbai as the two dominated the KKR bowling attack. Pacer Prasidh Krish-

na (0/30) faced their brunt, conceding three fours in the third over and de Kock followed that up by hammering Cummins (0/28) for two successive fours, both pull shots, in the next. De Kock kept playing shots all around the park and was again brutal on Prasidh, whom he hit for two fours and a six, in the seventh over, which fetched Mumbai 16 runs. KKR tried to pull

things back by removing Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav (10) in quick succession, but de Kock continued his onslaught with gusto and took the side home in the company of Hardik Pandya (21 off 11 balls), who played a small cameo. Earlier, after a toporder failure, it was Cummins (53 off 36 balls 5x4;2x6) and new skipper Eoin Morgan (39 not out off 29 balls; 2x4; 2x6),

who conjured 87 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket, to pull KKR out of trouble after they were reeling at 61 for five in the 11th over. Opting to bat, Kolkata lost opener Rahul Tripathi (7) early, courtesy a sensational catch by Suryakumar Yadav at point, in the third over off Trent Boult (1/32). It became 33 for two as Nitish Rana (5) perished cheaply after he was

caught by de Kock off Nathan Coulter-Nile (1/51) as a short ball worked for the Australian pacer in the sixth over. Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar (2/18) struck twice in the eight over, removing the young Shubham Gill (21) and Dinesh Karthik (4) off successive balls and reduced Kolkata to 42 for four. While Gill holed out to Kieron Pollard at longon in an attempt to accelerate the run-rate, Karthik played onto the stumps at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. KKR lost half their side for 61 as Andre Russell perished for 12. A bouncer from Jasprit Bumrah (1/22) did the trick as Russell lobbed off a sitter to de Kock. Cummins smashed Nathan Coulter-Nile for two fours and a maximum in the 13th over, which fetched KKR 16 runs and then made optimum use of a life he got. Cummins and Morgan added 53 in the last five overs, and they were particularly brutal against Coulter-Nile, who leaked 51 runs in his four overs.

Dinesh Karthik steps down as KKR captain; Eoin Morgan takes charge

ABU DHABI, OCT 16 (PTI): Wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik on Friday stepped down as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders team, handing over the reins to his English deputy Eoin Morgan hours before the IPL match against Mumbai Indians here. Karthik told the KKR management that he wants to “focus on his batting and contributing more to the team’s cause. Appointed skipper in 2018, the 35year-old led KKR in 37 matches. “We are fortunate to have leaders such as DK, who has always put the team first. It takes a lot of courage for someone like him to take a decision such as this, team CEO Venky Mysore said in a statement. “While we were surprised by his decision, we are respectful of his wishes. Midway into the ongoing season, KKR find themselves at fourth place in the points table with four wins and three losses. Morgan was widely tipped to take over at some point from Karthik given the topsyturvy run.

Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik

“...DK and Eoin have worked brilliantly together during this tournament and although Eoin takes over as captain, this is effectively a role swap and we expect that this transition will work in a seamless manner, Mysore said. “On behalf of everyone at Kolkata Knight Riders, we thank DK for all his contributions as the captain over the past two and a half years and wish Eoin the very best going forward. Even though Mysore termed Karthik’s decision surprising, the move was always on the cards with a World Cup-winning captain in the mix.

The veteran Indian wicketkeeper-batsman’s captaincy had come under intense criticism due to the team’s erratic campaign so far. If KKR has won four games so far, it could well have been half as they had two miraculous escapes against Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab, matches where it was more about opposition losing than KKR winning. Insult to injury was mystery spinner Sunil Narine being reported again for a suspect action. He has not been included in the side ever since the umpires raised objection to his action.

Timon & Pumbaa reunite: Chahal shares pic with Gayle

‘Timon & pumbaa reunites #hakunamatata,’ captioned Chahal the image that showed the frail bowler hugging the ‘Universe Boss’.

S H A R JA H , O C T 1 6 (IANS): Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Friday shared a hakunamatata moment with a striking picture of his and Kings XI Punjab batsman Chris Gayle. “Timon & pumbaa reunites #hakunamatata, captioned Chahal the image that showed the frail bowler hugging the ‘Universe Boss’. Timon and Pumbaa are famous meerkat and warthog pair from Disney’s 1994 animated film ‘The Lion King’ and its franchise. On Thursday, Gayle made his first appearance in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being released from hospital following a stomach bug. The big-

hitting West Indian scored 53 runs of 45 balls (one 4 and five 6s) and helped Kings XI chase down the target of 172 against RCB at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. After reaching his half century, Gayle was seen pointing towards ‘The Boss’ sign on his bat. After the culmination of the match, the West Indian was asked about the gesture and he explained the reasons. “All I was saying, put some respect on the name (by pointing to his bat sticker). That’s all, the 41-year-old said. RCB, with five wins in eight matches, are currently placed at the third spot in the standings while KXIP are at the bottom of the table with just four points from eight games.
