Next 3 months decisive: Vardhan

NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (PTI): Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday said the next three months are going to be decisive in determining the coronavirus situation in the country as he urged people to follow COVID appropriate behaviour in the coming festival season and winter months. He also highlighted that the number of active COVID-19 cases in the country are less than 7 lakh and the doubling rate has increased to 97.2 days. Vardhan, who reviewed the COVID-19 preparedness with the health and medical education ministers and other senior officials of Uttar Pradesh, said in the last three months, the country has seen significant improvement in the COVID parameters, the health ministry said in a statement. “From recording over 95,000 COVID-19 cases in a day, they have been substantially reduced to less than 55,000 per day. The recovery rate of India is nearing 90 per cent. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is also declining. CFR stands at 1.51 per cent and is moving towards the target of being less than 1

per cent,” he was quoted as saying in the statement. “The number of active cases are less than 7 lakh and the doubling rate has increased to 97.2 days, as of now,” Vardhan said. From just one lab, the country now has nearly 2,000 laboratories. The number of total COVID-19 tests conducted across the country have surpassed 10 crore. “This is a positive indication that we are moving in the right direction,” the minister said. He said appropriate measures are being taken to combat the infectious disease. “But the next three months are going to be decisive in determining the situation of COVID-19 in the country. If we take adequate precaution and follow COVID appropriate

behaviour in the coming festival and winter season, we will be in a better position to fight coronavirus,” Vardhan said. “For a big state like Uttar Pradesh, it becomes important that maximum thrust is given to simple precautionary measures which are effective in preventing the spread of the disease to a large extent like wearing masks/face cover, especially in public spaces, and following hand and respiratory etiquettes,” he added. The health minister also spoke to officials of the districts where fresh COVID-19 cases or deaths are increasing. Vardhan also stressed that the northern state needs to focus on increasing testing, surveillance, contact tracing and early diagnosis to keep the fatality rate low. COVID in India mainly driven by super-spreaders: Earlier this month, the researchers said that the transmission of the coronavirus in India has been mainly driven by superspreaders, PTI reported. India’s virus tally rises to 77,61,312

PTI: India’s COVID-19 caseload rose to 77,61,312, on Friday, Union Health Ministry stated. A total of 54,366 new infections were reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,17,306 with 690 fatalities.

people can become infected from a common source. A contact tracing study, said to be the largest epidemiological analyses conducted in the world, was published in the journal Science. The researchers, including those from Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, found that over 70% of infected patients in the country did not pass the disease to any of their contacts, while 8% of infected individuals accounted for 60% of new infections. The study assessed the infection transmission patterns in 5,75,071 individuals, who were exposed to 84,965 confirmed coronavirus cases, in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Data for the study was gathered by thousands of contacttracers during the nationwide lockdown to rein in the infection. Both the states account for about 10% of the country’s population. It revealed that children are more efficient transmitters of the virus than initially believed. Researchers found children under 14 to be frequent “silent” spreaders of the virus, especially to their parents and friends.

Depression to bring heavy rains over NE states

PDA govt plan for Hornbill Fest under COVID-19, a ‘suicidal mission’: NPF

NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (PTI): Depression over the Bay of Bengal will bring heavy rains on Friday to the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Assam and Meghalaya, the Cyclone Warning Division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. IMD said the depression is very likely to cross West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and Khepupara (Bangladesh) over the Sundarbans on Friday. “Due to this, light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy falls (115.6204.4 mm/day) are likely at a few places, and extremely heavy falls at isolated places are very likely over Tripura, heavy to very heavy falls at a few places Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, south Assam and Meghalaya are likely,” the IMD said. Depression is a cyclonic circulation and is packed with squally winds and heavy rains. The depression is expected to abate and become a well-marked low pressure area by Oct 24.

DIMAPUR, OCT 23 (NPN): NPF has expressed shock and hit out at the PDA government for its decision to celebrate the annual Hornbill Festival 2020 by describing it as a “suicidal mission” especially during COVID-19 pandemic. Press Bureau NPF said while COVID-19 was on the rise on a daily basis and the state reeling under the COVID-19 pandemic, it expressed surprise with the “heartless attitude” of the PDA government to persist with conducting the annual festival. NPF chided the PDA government that it was “not a time to merry making and momentary pleasure but to ensure the safety of its people and change its decision for the safety of its people.” NPF maintained that though the government planned to hold the festival in virtual form (without public gathering), there was no need to hold such a celebration without public participation. It also reminded that even when the state was under total lockdown, the virus continued to spread.

NPF therefore, wondered how safe was it to celebrate the Hornbill festival in whatever way the government was contemplating to? NPF demanded to know from the government on whether it could assure the Naga public on the safety of the participants from the virus? Further, NPF also demanded to know why the state government made a U-turn for the event when it had earlier curtailed many income generating activities of the public, closure of educational institutions, limited operation of business establishments, restraining tribes from celebrating their own festival due to the fear of virus transmission?. It said despite enforcing safety protocols (SOPs)wearing masks, washing hands and maintaining social distance- the number of positive cases soared to over 8000 and 22 deaths reported. In view of this, NPF asked how far could the virus be contained from going to community transmission by enforcing the SOP during the celebration of Hornbill?

The opposition party also reminded the state government that positivity rate in Nagaland had surpassed the national average, which clearly indicated that Nagaland has higher transmission rate than the national average. While not denying that the Hornbill festival was a perfect opportunity to improve tourism and a time to showcase Naga traditional heritage to the outside world, NPF, however said that under the present situation, the influx of international and domestic tourist from different places would prove catastrophic. It also cautioned that with increase in community transmission of coronavirus, the celebration of Hornbill festival in the state will be a complete disaster. NPF pointed out that when the inter national sports mega event ‘Olympic’, supposed to be hosted by one of the world’s most advance country- Japancould be cancelled due to the pandemic, then what was driving the PDA government to hold the Hornbill festival at the cost of the public life?.

NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (NPN): A mid-term review meeting on planning and implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in Nagaland was held Friday in New Delhi, wherein Nagaland state officials presented the progress to the National Jal Jeevan Mission team. Jal Jeevan Mission is a flagship program of Government of India to provide Functional Household Tap Connection (FHTC) to every rural household of the country by 2024.The mission aims to improve the lives of rural people by providing safe drinking water to every rural home through household tap connections. The decentralized, demand-driven, community-managed water supply schemes at village/ habitation level is perceived

as a transformational programme in drinking water sector. 1,351 villages out of 1,502 in Nagaland have Piped Water Supply (PWS) systems, through which 3 lakh tap water connections can be provided. Thus, the retrofitting/augmentation of such schemes will ensure the annual target of 1.47 lakh FHTCs. In the only aspirational district, Kiphire, 83 villages (75%) out of 111 villages have PWS. Further, out of 15,845 households in the district, 13,478 (85%) households have access to PWS and the remaining households will be provided tap connections. Stressing on the need for proper planning to be done to achieve the goal of the mission within the time frame with focus on retrofitting/augmentation of existing water supply systems to provide tap water connections to remaining house-

holds, the senior officials advised the State Government officials to expedite the implementation. Nagaland was advised to give priority to these areas as well as complete the accreditation of State and district laboratories in next 3-4 months and also to open those for public so that they can test the quality of water supplied at very nominal rate. During 2020-21, Nagaland was allocated Rs.114.09 crore, out of which Rs.28.52 crore was released to the State. Further, under 15th Finance Commission Grants to rural local bodies, Nagaland was allocated Rs.125 crore in 2020-21, 50% of which is mandatorily to be utilized on drinking water supply and sanitation activities. State was requested to ensure all the anganwadi centres and schools are provided piped water supply. K Y M C

The High Court of Manipur, in a ruling passed on September 19, 2020, declared the Manipur Parliamentary Secretary (Appointment, Salary and Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Repealing Act, 2018 under which the BJP-led coalition government appointed the 12 parliamentary secretaries as invalid and unconstitutional. Following the ruling, the opposition Congress

has been demanding that the state Governor must take necessary actions to disqualify the MLAs even as they had already been removed from the posts. A Congress delegation led by opposition leader and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh today met Governor Dr Najma Heptulla and submitted a memorandum reiterating their demand for disqualification of the MLAs. Congress MLAs - Gaikhangam, K Ranjit Singh, Konthoujam Govindas, Keisham Meghachandra Singh and DD Thaisi – were among others who accompanied Ibobi in the meeting. Addressing a press conference at Imphal Congress Bhavan after the meeting, former chief minister O Ibobi Singh demanded that the 12 MLAs who enjoyed the office of profit after they were appointed as parliamentary secretaries must be disqualified. “We have requested the Governor to take appropriate action against the 12 MLAs as per the Constitution of

ESIC extends coverage of health insurance scheme to Arunachal

New Delhi, Oct 23 (PTI): Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has extended its health insurance scheme ESI to Arunachal Pradesh. “In its continuous endeavour to cover more workers under ESI Scheme, Government of India has now extended the Employees State Insurance (ESI) Scheme for the first time to Arunachal Pradesh, with effect from 1st November, 2020,” a labour ministry statement said. A notification to this effect has been issued by the Central Government for notifying the district

of Papum Pare, under ESI Scheme. All factories located in the district of Papum Pare of Arunachal Pradesh employing 10 or more persons shall become eligible for coverage under the ESI Act, 1948. The facility of online registration under the ESI Scheme is available on the website www.esic.in and also on the “Shram Suvidha Portal” of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. No physical documents are required to be submitted for registration under ESI Act.

India,” Ibobi said. He claimed that there was enough evidence to prove that the 12 MLAs enjoyed the office of profit after they were appointed as parliamentary secretaries. He said that they enjoyed the status of minister of state. They drew salaries as parliamentary secretaries besides vehicles allotted by the state GAD (General Administrative Department) unlike the parliamentary secretaries appointed by the Delhi government. The former three time chief minister said that while submitting the memorandum, the Congress delegation enclosed all the documents supporting that the 12 MLAs did enjoy of-

fice of profit. The opposition leader further accused the incumbent BJP-led government of indulging in various unconstitutional activities right from the beginning. He said that the BJPled coalition government itself was formed in an unconstitutional manner from the backdoor while reminding how the BJP had formed the government sidelining the Congress that emerged as the single largest party. “Since the beginning, they (BJP) violated constitution and law. The same is continuing till today,” Ibobi said, citing withdrawal of candidature by an independent candidate who filed nomination paper for November 7 by-polls. The former chief minister was referring to Chinlunthang who filed his nomination paper to contest the by-poll from Singhat AC of Churachandpur district but withdrew his candidature on Thursday leaving BJP’s Ginsuanhau as the lone candidate. Chinlunthang was ap-

pointed as OSD (Officer on Special Duty) in the tribal affairs and hills department by manipulating the date of appointment, he alleged. There was no reason for the RO to accept the nomination paper filed by a government employee to contest an election. If the RO happened to do so, he is liable to legal action. Interestingly, Chinlunthang was the BJP candidate from the same Assembly constituency (Singhat AC) in 2017 general elections to the state Assembly in which he lost the election to Ginsuanhau who won the election on Congress ticket. H owe ve r, h e wa s found to be appointed as OSD of the tribal affairs and hills department by an order issued on September 24, 2020. The order appointing him was date backed. If not, there was no reason for the concerned RO accepting his nomination paper. And if he did it, he was liable to be booked under relevant election law, Ibobi said.

Idol of Durga made by Sanjib Basak.

Dhubri, Oct 23 (PTI): With the COVID-19 pandemic having brought the world to its knees, a 37-year old Assam government employee, in solidarity with everyone fighting the global menace, has created a Durga idol here with strips of expired tablets, capsules and injection vials. Sanjib Basak, an employee of Dhubri district administration, has, over the past few years, come up with various innovative and ecofriendly ideas to design the

idol, but this year, amid the COVID-19 crisis, he wanted to make a difference with his creation. “During lockdown, I had observed that people were queuing up outside pharmaceutical shops to buy essential medicines in bulk. It was then the idea struck me that I could be making Maa Durga’s idol with medicine strips to mark the pandemic,” Basak, who had last year made the figurine with discarded electric wires, told PTI. It took the district of-

ficial nearly five months and 40,000 strips of tablets, capsules and injection vials of different colours to give shape to his idea. “Initially, I was worried that I won’t be able to make the idol this year due to work pressure and strict safety protocols. But I managed to create one with expired medicines. “Paper, thermocol and board, among other things, were used to fix the medicine strips to a frame and create the idol,” Basak added.

BJP MLA writes to Shah on Assam-Meghalaya land dispute

Correspondent

Shillong, Oct 23: Meghalaya’s BJP legislator Sanbor Shullai on Friday wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah seeking the Central government intervention in resolving the vexed interstate boundary dispute between Assam and Meghalaya. In his letter, the former Deputy Speaker reminded the Union Home Minister of the decision taken by the centre to resolve the all pending border disputes among the Northeastern states by 2021. “The decision to resolve border disputes among

the North-eastern states by 2021 is a noble thought and gesture and one that we are highly grateful for,” Shullai noted. “This act by the government will help boost the morale of the party workers all across the region and will help us strengthen our party

and future consolidates our presence,” he informed the Home Minister. “Such a move will go down in the history of the region besides giving confidence to the people of this region in our party and governance,” the BJP legislator asserted. Referring to frequent disputes due to unsettled boundary in several areas between Assam and Meghalaya, the BJP legislator said, “This lead to an uneasy calm and hostility among the people living in both sides of the border.” “The people in the unsettled border areas are facing difficulties as several developmental activities

cannot be carried out due to the boundary dispute,” Shullai said. “The people of Meghalaya are a peace loving community, but the effects of disputes spill over to the rest of the state affecting lives of people all over and also disrupt the communal harmony,” the BJP legislator said. In the past, the Meghalaya government had sought the central government intervention to sort out the four-decadeold border dispute with Assam. Meghalaya has 12 areas of dispute with Assam. In 1985, the Assam and Meghalaya governments had entrusted Jus-

tice Y.V.Chandrachud to head a committee of experts on the constitutional aspects of boundary demarcation between the two states. Assam claimed Lang-

pih – called Lumpi in Assam -based on the recommendations of the Justice Chandrachud committee report. However, Meghalaya has rejected the committee’s report.

Bad road syndrome

T

here are two sides of the story about the condition of roads, especially in Dimapur, where some good and some bad are evident. Bad roads not only add to misery to the travellers but also invite huge cost in terms of loss of hours, damages to vehicles and adversely affect health conditions of the travellers. After the current PDA coalition assumed power in March 2018, it promised to effect a facelift of all roads within important cities such as Kohima and Dimapur. It must however, be also admitted that roads in other urban towns have been done up and to great relief of pedestrians, motorists and public. However, good roads don’t just happen after black topping the surface. Roads can remain good only if necessary measures are undertaken to prevent its untimely deterioration. It is a fact that roads are not built to last forever but they can last as long as they are properly constructed and cared for by the departments and the public. One evidence of how roads deteriorate badly during three to five years is water logging due to lack of proper drainage. Without drains, flooded rain water percolates into the inner layers of the road carpet and gradually loosens the mixture to the affected portion. As vehicles drive over the weakened area, the bitumen layer along with carpet begins to crack and a crater or pothole is formed. This continues until the damaged area causes more erosion to the nearby areas and result in more craters and roads without bitumen cover etc. While two of the roads within Dimapur- entire stretch of GS Road and the road from Walfords traffic point towards Burma camp- are totally shorn off bitumen topping. Even the highway from Dillai gate to Dhobinalla traffic point linking GS Road is fast deteriorating. This particular road was constructed during 2001-02 and even after more than fifteen years, the road remained as good. Interestingly, this road stretch has no visible roadside drains. A few potholes developed since five years back and today more potholes are visible and some stretch have suffered major deterioration. Lack of maintenance during the past eighteen to nineteen years has resulted in gradual deterioration. The department responsible should be reminded of the saying “a stitch in time saves nine”. In other states there are contractors who have adequate engineering and technical knowledge or who are experienced and conversant with construction works. Compromising with quality should not be permitted. This is one of the reasons about the poor quality of infrastructures in Nagaland. It is also a fact that the Schedule Of Rate(SoR) fixed on various items for any particular period, are more than double or even triple the cost in the local market. Over and above this aspect, most government civil contract works are invariably subjected to the “real juice” called cost escalation that can shoot up to even one and half or twice the original estimate. The other factor that determines the durability is workmanship and this is an issue dueto lack of accountability. There have been enough reports published in the local media about poor quality of work. It may also be suggested that the state roads and bridges authority should enforce the laws and also ensure that monitoring is undertaken by a totally separate and independent branch that may also include prominent citizens

DailyDevotion Nothing of the Old Life!

If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. —2 Corinthians 5:17 Our Lord never tolerates our prejudices— He is directly opposed to them and puts them to death. We tend to think that God has some special interest in our particular prejudices, and are very sure that He will never deal with us as He has to deal with others. We even say to ourselves, “God has to deal with other people in a very strict way, but of course He knows that my prejudices are all right.” But we must learn that God accepts nothing of the old life! Instead of being on the side of our prejudices, He is deliberately removing them from us. It is part of our moral education to see our prejudices put to death by His providence, and to watch how He does it. God pays no respect to anything we bring to Him. There is only one thing God wants of us, and that is our unconditional surrender. When we are born again, the Holy Spirit begins to work His new creation in us, and there will come a time when there is nothing remaining of the old life. Our old gloomy outlook disappears, as does our old attitude toward things, and “all things are of God” (2 Corinthians 5:18). How are we going to get a life that has no lust, no self-interest, and is not sensitive to the ridicule of others? How will we have the type of love that “is kind…is not provoked, [and] thinks no evil”? (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). The only way is by allowing nothing of the old life to remain, and by having only simple, perfect trust in God— such a trust that we no longer want God’s blessings, but only want God Himself. Have we come to the point where God can withdraw His blessings from us without our trust in Him being affected? Once we truly see God at work, we will never be concerned again about the things that happen, because we are actually trusting in our Father in heaven, whom the world cannot see.

Post-mortem

Joint appeal for unity for Naga political solution

C

urrently the Nagas seem to be living in the ‘caged societies’ planted and nurtured by the ideological, organizational and politico-administrative territorial divides aggravated by the tendency to nurture an overriding loyalty to one’s own ethnic and tribal communities. Despite the tall proclamation that the Nagas are a separate entity, a nation that merits to be left to itself as a sovereign nationstate, we have not been able to transcend these boundaries and the associated world views engendered by a desire to protect the interest of our respective ethnic/tribal groups. This penchant for nurturing an overriding loyalty to our respective tribes/ ethnic groups based on administrative units, different Naga Political groups and organizations has led to the iron caging of the Naga society. Leveraging these cages of divisive mentalities, the hawkish elements within and without have weaponized and exploited the centrifugal forces at

work as instruments to relegate the Nagas to mere prisoners setting them up against each other as mutual enemies/strangers with an unpredictable and distrustful dilemma. The dilemma faced by the Nagas as prisoners of their own making is that each party, tribe and organization is tempted to think that it is better off working against each other rather than working together against the adverse circumstances. But in doing so, each of the Naga groups ends up worst off than they would have been if only they had cooperated with each other and not defect to work against each other. The failures of the past agreements and accords also corroborate the truths of these dilemmas that led groups to zealously guard their own group’s so called rational self-interests and choices which indeed have turned out to be the most irrational acts leading the Naga society into the present-day crises. The Nagas cannot afford to

forget the past blunders and repeat it again. The choice before the Nagas clearly is to talk to each other and find a common ground to lend support to a position that realistically constitutes our nonnegotiable position for an inclusive, honorable and acceptable solution based on the unique history and situation of the Nagas. The Nagas as an entity is like one body with many parts and each part is equally important for the well-being of all other parts. If one part suffers, the whole body will be affected. Hence, piecemeal political solutions in the guise of securing constitutional rights without securing a common political future will not heal the land and our people. Unity is unmistakably the earnest desire of every Naga soul. However, unfortunately we have hypocritically taken ‘unity’ as synonymous with ‘uniformity’. While unity accepts differences necessitating the need for democratic dialogue, open-mindedness

and mutual respects to work towards the recognition of common goal and the greater good of all as the fundamental basis for unity; uniformity involves an imposition of one’s will and preferences on others without space for negotiation and compromise. As a body that stands firmly on the foundation of Naga political movement and our historical rights, we believe that Nagas are “one” and the only way forward is to settle our differences through dialogue within the Naga family and to be unified in common purpose by agreeing to converge at a non-negotiable position for recognition of the identity of the Nagas as embodied in the Flag, Constitution and our allegiance to the Naga ancestral homeland. With utmost sincerity, we appeal to the 14 Tribes of Nagaland to consider all Nagas irrespective of boundaries as “equal stakeholders” as they have sacrificed so much for the common Naga cause. Any solution that confines itself

W

exclusively to the present state of Nagaland would have far reaching ramifications in the future. The 15th October 2020 Consultative Meeting convened by the Chief Minister of Nagaland on Naga Political Issue cannot be considered as an inclusive exercise of taking collective opinion since Naga Hoho was denied the opportunity to present the expressed views and opinions of the Naga people across the borders. The Naga’s struggle for freedom as a collective birthright is binding on all of us and it should be revered as sacrosanct, bigger and above all the Naga organizations and their leaders. The time for self-imposed imprisonment from within and without is over. We strongly believe in unity for an inclusive and honorable Naga Political solution and in this journey of common hope, the Naga Hoho will sincerely continue to act as a facilitator to work towards finding a common ground for all the stakeholders. We, the undersigned

on behalf of the Nagas from different regions and states fervently urge the tribes in the present state of Nagaland to reaffiliate under the umbrella of Naga Hoho and strengthen its platform in the best interest of Naga people as a whole. All Naga tribes and their frontal organizations irrespective of their sizes and borders have contributed immeasurably and we believe that they are all equal partners in our common quest for the Nagas right to self-determination. he arrest of the 83-year old Jesuit Stan Swamy had to come sometime because he has fought for justice all his life, and people in power consider demands of justice to the poor an anti-national act. So he and many others are being punished for their stand on justice. Every government that only pays lip service to democracy finds a threat in the poor who demand their right to be human and in those who support their rights. They are a threat to people in power though the Supreme Court has interpreted Article 21 of the Constitution on right to life as every person’s right to a life with dignity. That value is a threat to the rulers who work for the profit of a few. However, his arrest shocked those who know this messenger of justice because one did not expect even the present government to arrest an 83-year old ailing person at night and take him to Mumbai where COVID-19 is raging. He is only the last in a series of persons to be accused of anti-national activities for demanding justice for the marginalised. Others include Gautam Navlakha the journalist who analysed situations from the point of view of the poor, Dr Anand Teltumbde the Ambedkarite intellectual and 13 others who have been arrested on charges of being urban Naxalites who conspired to create violence at Bhima Koregaon on 1st January 2018. That Navlakha, Teltumbde, Stan and others have not been in touch with each other is irrelevant to those who accuse them of conspiracy to create violence at Bhima Koregaon and overthrow the government. That Stan Swamy was targeted is not surprising. During the four decades when I have known him and twenty years of association with him I have seen his total commitment to the cause of the tribes, Dalits and other marginalised communities. Equally strong in him is his conviction of the need for peaceful agitation. He encouraged the communities of the poor to demand their rights and joined them whenever they struggled to protect their dignity but he applied the brake wherever he saw the possibility of violence. In the 1980s he struggled with the bonded labourers who were demanding their freedom in Tamil Nadu though many of them were bonded to the family of a powerful politician. He has taken a stand even against the church for example on the side of the Dalits in Villupuram in 1978 and in Thanjavur in 1990 who were demanding caste equality and human dignity. For the last quarter of a century he has been with the tribal communities of Jharkhand who are displaced, deprived of their livelihood, impoverished and made to pay the price in the name of national development. Stan felt that they were bearing the burden for the development of another class and for corporate profit. He joined them in their demands for justice and supported their struggles but kept cautioning them against violence. One, therefore, finds it difficult even to laugh when he is accused of encouraging violence. But the attack on him had to come because he has fought for the tribal cause all his life. Recently he had committed the ‘crime’ of approaching the Jharkhand High Court asking for the release of around 3,000 tribal young persons who have been arrested and have been languishing in jail for months for demanding that the State implement the provisions of the

e are living in an era largely dominated by the internet, which, from the time of its inception has made rapid and dramatic changes to society. Everything from the way we interact to the way we gain knowledge has been incalculably altered. In a world where everything is becoming more accessible to us, we face the dilemma of whether this is a blessing or a bane. Countless debates on the subject have born the answer that it helps us gain access to a number of things from the comfort of our homes. This is quite the conundrum given that this accessibility can work for or against humanity. For the most part, the outcome of this is dependent on how we make use of the information available to us. ‘Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master’- Lous Lange A large number of studies have found a strong association between digitalization and poor mental health. The most common problem is, perhaps, cyber-bullying. It is the idea of not being held accountable, hiding behind a screen that makes it easier to let go of inhibitions which may sometimes get ugly. The internet can also be home to communities that pose a threat to society. Even the idea of sex has become disproportionately unrealistic through pornography which is easily accessible to anyone. The content that is available to us, carefully curated to fit sometimes, harmful ideals, can contribute to the onset of mental distress and may perpetuate feelings of anxiety, social exclusion and body image issues. A facet of the digital age that is placed on a pedestal is social media. It is true that social media has brought the world closer but at the same time, driven us apart. Social media has caused people to draw comparisons between their lives and the lives of the people online which often display only what they want people to see. How much ever we understand that ‘nobody is perfect,’ this idea is seemingly impossible to grasp due to the content that we see. We strive for perfection based on this which poses a threat to mental health- having unrealistic goals that can hamper growth and sometimes even lead to depression, body dysmorphia and eating disorders. Social media addiction has emerged out of the advancement of technology. There is so much content being created, each striving to be more different than the other which keeps us ceaselessly interested. There is also a fear of missing out which is like fuel

needs to fix domestic issues, economy LAC to be tabled during Pompeo-Esper visit to India India to face world with more credibility: Tharoor NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (AGENCIES): The situation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC) will be discussed during the simultaneous visit to India next week by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Secretary of Defence Mark Esper, senior State Department officials have said at a media briefing late on Thursday. When asked if the LAC tensions will figure, an official said: “We’re watching the situation closely. I think both sides have expressed a desire to de-escalate violence.” The two sides are in the process of finalising several agreements with a critical military pact called BECA also in the works. The meeting comes a month before Quad countries — the US, India, Japan and Australia — will launch joint naval war games. Officials said instead of talking of countering China, the US would prefer to frame a discussion in a more positive trajectory with the end goal to “empower these countries to push back”. Like the MEA here, the US diplomats sought to convey the impression that the diplomatic calendar has its own dynamics. “The 2+2 had previously been scheduled and

Mike Pompeo and Mark Esper. (File) delayed. Now the schedules worked out, so that’s really what’s driving the opportunity for this trip right now,” the official said. Pompeo and Esper, possibly accompanied by their spouses, would hold a series of meetings in New Delhi. They will call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NSA Ajit Doval and separately meet their counterparts and hold the 2+2 meeting that is “reserved for our closest friends and partners”, said Dean Thompson, State Department’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for South and Central Asian Affairs.

“The LAC tensions will figure at ‘some point’ during these meetings,” he elaborated. Pompeo will carry on to Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia in a bridgebuilding exercise with Asian countries sitting astride key shipping lanes. The focus areas of the Pompeo-Esper visit listed by the US side are similar to those mentioned by the MEA. The US side mentioned global cooperation, challenges in the Indo-Pacific, economic, space and energy collaboration, people-topeople ties, and defence and

security cooperation as the priority areas. The MEA had listed political, security and defence, economic, commercial, technology and people-to-people contacts as the key focus areas. In the case of Sri Lanka, which is close to China, the message from the Americans will be stark. Colombo will be asked to review “the options we offer in contrast to discriminatory and opaque practices” (by China). The US will also question Sri Lanka on issues related to human rights, reconciliation and democracy. “Right now, we think they’re at a point to make

some choices about where they head…. We want to partner on sustainable economic development and a free and open Indo-Pacific,” said Thompson. The message was milder for Indonesia which recently rebuffed a US request to fuel maritime surveillance planes. David Stilwell, State Department’s Assistant Secretary for East-Asian and Pacific Affairs, called Jakarta a “pillar” of “free and open Indo-Pacific”. “We’re looking forward to strengthening critical relationships with our friends and partners, emphasising our deep commitment to the Indo-Pacific and advancing our vision for long-term partnership and prosperity in the region,” said Thompson when asked about the basic purpose of the trip. The officials said the US will help countries to assert their claims to resources in their exclusive economic zones. Washington’s backing to Mekong River basin countries, they claimed, led to China agreeing to share water information, which is critically important to downstream nations. The maritime partnerships the US has in mind also involve maritime domain awareness, security and law enforcement.

NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (PTI): Underlining that India has been more of a “rule taker” than a “rule maker” at the UN, senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Friday said the country needs to fix its domestic issues, including that of the economy, and have “moral authority” if it wants to be a rules contributor to the world. The former Union minister said he has always argued that India’s international credibility is often a reflection of its domestic postures and the success at home is the best guarantee that “we will be respected and effective abroad”. “Now we have unfortunately been going through a few very bad years domestically in terms of crumbling social cohesion, the eruption and uncontrollable spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the border troubles with China, the economic collapse after demonetisation, unemployment figures worst recorded in the history in these years, everything is wrong,” he said at a session of the 7th national forum of the Public Affairs Forum of India. Tharoor said India must use its capacity to demand constructive changes in global governance. “India has to be what

it was trying to be before the last five years or so which was a sort of an example to the developing world -- the world’s first development power,” the former UN under secretary general said. Tharoor hoped that India would contribute to initiatives to catalyse a new consensus for the world. “But before it does so, we really have to fix our internal situation first so that we can face the world with greater credibility and with renewed admiration that we used to enjoy till very recently,” he said. Asked about reforms at the UN and whether they were linked with monetary contributions by member states, Tharoor said, “I don’t think cheque book alone is important.” India is a state that has contributed generously and was among the leading donors to UN’s democracy fund, initiatives on ideas, decolonisation, racism, apartheid, and also also contributed in kind through peacekeeping, Tharoor said. “India has nothing to be ashamed of, we have very much been in the forefront of international efforts at the UN to do a lot of good work and to contribute in terms of leadership. Yet, we have been more of a ‘rule taker’ than a ‘rule maker’ and these rules have been made by the

big powerful countries and we haven’t been counted amongst them,” he said. “Which is why we need both economic growth and prosperity on the one hand, which has gone down the tubes in the last few years, and we also need moral authority if we want to be a rule contributor,” Tharoor said. That moral authority comes from the successful management of our own challenges including the great challenges of religious, ethnic and linguistic diversity in India which the country had been managing very well till recently, he said It also involves managing some of the contradictions in the neighbourhood and being magnanimous to neighbours rather than being hostile to them, Tharoor said, claiming that India had slipped on that count recently. Tharoor said it was important for India to come across to the rest of the world as an example of a thriving and harmonious society. “If we can get our act together and lead our country in the direction that we have traditionally aspired to -- that has been hailed as a success in the past, we will once again be in a position to set an example whether on the Security Council or off it,” he said.

NEW DELHI, OCT 23 (PTI): Pakistan will remain in FATF’s ‘grey’ list till February 2021 as it has failed to fulfil six key obligations of the global money laundering and terrorist financing watchdog that include failure to take action against two of India’s most wanted terrorists — Maulana Masood Azhar and Hafiz Saeed, officials said on Friday. The virtual plenary of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), held in the last three days, concluded that Pakistan will continue in its ‘grey’ list. The decision has been taken after a thorough review of Pakistan’s performance in fulfilling the global commitments and standards on the fight against money laundering and terror financing. “Pakistan remains in the increased monitoring list or the grey list,” FATF president Marcus Pleyer said at a virtual press conference from Paris. Pakistan failed to fulfil six of the 27 mandates so far as a result of which the country continues to be in the grey list of the FATF. “Pakistan failed to fulfil six of the 27 mandates given to check terror funding,” Pleyer said. The FATF chief said Islamabad must impose sanction and prosecute those involved in terror financing.

But when the Chinese army intruded, why did our prime minister insult our soldiers by saying that nobody entered into the Indian side?” he said. “You ask any army jawan and he will tell you that today the Chinese army is standing in the area which we used to patrol earlier. Our land has been snatched away from us,” he said. “The question is, Modi ji, when will you throw out the Chinese soldiers sitting in our territory?” Gandhi asked.

In his speeches, the prime minister also took on the opposition over their agitation against the farm reform laws enacted by his government, saying the protests were, in fact, aimed at “saving” middlemen and brokers in the garb of backing the Minimum Support Price regime and agriculture ‘mandis’. They had spoken the language of middlemen and brokers even when the Rafale fighter aircraft were bought, Modi said, asserting that India will not back off from the decisions it has taken. Did he help the labourers of Bihar?” “He bows before labourers, but doesn’t help them when they need it. When you were dying of starvation and walking to your homes thousands of kilometers away, Modi didn’t offer you trains or buses. He will bow before you but will work for Ambanis and Adanis,” Gandhi alleged. Unemployment was another major issue in the bitter electoral discourse. In his speeches, the prime minister took a dig at the grand alliance’s promise of sanctioning 10 lakh government jobs made by Tejashwi Yadav, the opposition’s chief ministerial candidate. “Can those who look at government jobs as a means for taking bribes ensure creation of jobs?” Modi asked. Gandhi responded with a vengeance, saying the BJP’s promise of creating 19 lakh jobs in Bihar over the next five years was akin to its pledge of depositing Rs 15 lakh in the bank accounts of people.

Minister Nitish Kumar had “broken the backbone” of the farmers, and medium and small businesses. “They had ended the mandi system and the MSP regime in Bihar already and now they are doing so across the country. He (Modi) is going to render lakhs of people jobless,” he said. “Narendra Modi, who calls himself a nationalist and a patriot, has weakened the country in the past six years. Hindustan is weak today. Its economy is suppressed, farmers oppressed and small shopkeepers restless. That’s why China has intruded into Indian territory,” the Congress leader alleged. He also flagged another emotive issue of migrant labourers who returned to the state in desperation after they were “chased away” from their places of work in other states during the lockdown. “Labourers from Bihar were chased away from Delhi and other states. They came on foot. When you were walking hungry and thirsty, did Modi help you?

The abrogation of Article 370 and farm sector reform laws figured prominently in the bitter electoral discourse where “jungle raj” during the 15 years of RJD dispensation, the migrant crisis and joblessness were also hotly debated. Addressing three back to back rallies in Dehri-onSone, Gaya and Bhagalpur, Modi castigated the opposition over its stand on the abrogation of Article 370 and the Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops in Eastern Ladakh, an emotive issue for the state as several soldiers of the Bihar regiment were killed in hand-to-hand combat. anti-corruption body slaps Trump, Biden spar over COVID, race, climate Pak’s fresh graft case on Nawaz Sharif “He always says people are learning to live with it. People are learning to die with it. I will take care of this. I will make sure we have a plan,” Biden responded. On climate change, Trump accused China, India and Russia of not taking care of their “filthy air” as he justified America’s withdrawal from the landmark Paris climate agreement. “Look at China, how filthy it is. Look at Russia. Look at India, it’s filthy. The air is filthy. We have the best emission numbers that we’ve had in 35 years under this administration. We are working so well with the industry,” he said. “The Paris Accord, I took us out because we were going to have to spend trillions of dollars and we were treated very unfairly. When they put us in there, they did is a great disservice. They were going to take away our businesses,” he asserted. “We have the best environmental numbers, ozone numbers, and so many other numbers. In the meantime, China, Russia, India all these countries they’re spewing stuff into the air,” he alleged. B i d e n a n d Tr u m p clashed on race relations, a topic that has gained prominence after the horrific mur-

der of an African American in police custody early this year in Minneapolis. Biden termed Trump “one of the most racist presidents we’ve had in modern history”, asserting that his Republican rival at his last debate did not condemn white supremacy and told an extremist group to “stand down and stand by.” “Here is one of the most racist presidents we’ve had in modern history. He pours fuel on every single racist fire. Every single one,” Biden alleged. The US president portrayed himself as a champion of Black people and reiterated that no president has done more for Black Americans than anyone other than former US President Abraham Lincoln. “Nobody has done more for the black community than Donald Trump. And if you look, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, possible exception, with the exception of Abraham Lincoln, nobody has done what I’ve done,” Trump claimed. When the debate moved to the topic of immigration, Trump appeared callous about the toll that his policies have taken on over 500 children who were separated from their parents at the border.

20 Afghan security personnel killed in Taliban attack

JERUSALEM, OCT 23 (IANS): Israeli war planes on Friday attacked military sites that belong to the Islamic Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, according to security sources. The sources said the Israeli army war jets struck with missiles military sites and facilities that belong to al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of the Hamas movement that rules the besieged Gaza Strip, reports Xinhua news agency. According to an Israeli army spokesman’s statement, the airstrikes targeting the movement’s weapon manufacturing sites and an underground military infrastructure were a response to rockets fired from Gaza at southern Israel on Thursday night. No injuries or damage were reported from the rockets attack and no one claimed responsibility for it. During the past two weeks, unknown militants had fired four rockets at southern Israel. On Tuesday, a rocket was fired from Gaza hours after the Israeli army discovered “a terror tunnel” that goes from the southern Gaza Strip into Israel. The current escalation between Israel and the Gaza Strip’s militants is a new violation of the calm understandings brokered by Egypt, the UN, and Qatar last year. K Y M C

Biden challenged Trump and alleged that his policies have resulted in a large number of deaths in the country. “We are about to go into a dark winter. A dark winter and he has no clear plan and there’s no prospect that there’s going to be a vaccine available for the majority of the American people before the middle of next year,” he said. Trump, who has often said the worst is over with the pandemic, reasserted this, claiming the US was “rounding the turn” and the country is learning to live with it.

maintains only unofficial relations with Taipei in deference to Beijing. However, U.S. law requires the government to ensure Taiwan can maintain a credible defense and recent years have seen an increase in both the quality and quantity of defensive arms sold to the island. Those come as China has increased military activity around Taiwan in what it calls a deliberate attempt to force politi-

cal concessions from the pro-independence administration of President Tsai Ing-wen. The increase in Chinese incursions into Taiwanese airspace and military exercises seen as targeting U.S. and Taiwanese assets add to Beijing’s years-long campaign of exerting economic and diplomatic pressure on the island, which has left it with just 15 formal diplomatic allies. In a separate statement issued late Thursday, the Chinese Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office demanded Tsai’s Democratic People’s Party end its “plotting” with the U.S. to “refuse unification through arms.” “This can only seriously undermine peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and bring down a terrible disaster on the Taiwanese people,” the statement said.

Two wildfires in Colorado could merge, warns experts

DENVER, OCT 23 (IANS): Exper ts have warned that two wildfires currently raging in the US state of Colorado could merge resulting in one massive blaze. As firefighters continued to battle the East Troublesome Fire, which erupted on October 14 and has scorched over 170,000 acres since, authorities on Thursday closed the Rocky Mountain National Park, while mandatory evacuations were issued for parts of Estes Park, CNN reported. As of Thursday night, the blaze, located near Grimes Peak in the Arapaho National Forest, was only 5 per cent contained. Unrest in Nigeria as anger over shooting grows

ABUJA, OCT 23 (IANS): Gunfire has erupted and jailbreaks have been reported in Nigeria, as unrest over the shooting of protesters in the country’s biggest city Lagos continues. Nigeria’s army has denied killing demonstrators in the Lekki area, provoking more anger. The protests began about two weeks ago with mostly young people de-

Prime Minister Khan. The approval of fresh cases followed a recent speech by Prime Minister Khan that the Opposition would see a “different Imran Khan”, which was interpreted as a threat to arrest more opposition leaders and court cases. Apart from Sharif and his close aides, the NAB approved cases worth billions of rupees of alleged corruption against several officials and businessmen for causing losses to the country in different projects. Sharif criticised the military establishment in recent speeches at gatherings of the opposition Pakistan Democratic Movement. Days before the July 2018 general elections, Sharif was convicted in the Avenfield properties case and sentenced to 10 years in prison. His daughter Maryam was sentenced to seven years in prison for abetment and his son-in-law Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar to one year. In December 2018, anti-corruption court judge Arshad Malik convicted Sharif in Al-Azizia Steel Mills case and sentenced him to seven years in prison. Judge Malik was later dismissed from service over misconduct.

He made no mention in the speech of the shooting of protesters in Lagos. Earlier, Nigeria’s vicepresident promised justice for victims shot during the protests. Lagos and other parts of Nigeria have seen buildings torched, shopping centres looted and prisons attacked since the shooting. The state government in Lagos imposed an indefinite round-the-clock curfew on the coastal city’s 20 million inhabitants on Tuesday evening.

BEIJING, OCT 23 (AP): China has vowed to retaliate if the US proceeds with the sale of advanced weaponry to Taiwan worth more than a billion dollars. The statement from China’s defense ministry gave no specifics, but the development marks a further deterioration in ties between Beijing and Washington that have hit their lowest ebb in decades. The statement issued late Thursday night demanded the cancellation of the sale and an end to all interactions between the U.S. and Taiwanese militaries in order to “avoid serious repercussions for relations between China and the U.S. and their armed forces and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.” Failure to do so would “compel the Chinese side to fight back resolutely,” the statement said.

WASHINGTON, OCT 23 (PTI): US President Donald Trump and his challenger Joe Biden clashed over COVID-19, immigration, race relations and climate change during their final debate, just ahead of the November 3 presidential election, presenting Americans with sharply divergent views of where they would lead them over the next four years. The two leaders traded barbs during the debate that lasted just over 90 minutes, attacking each other’s positions on controlling the raging coronavirus pandemic and curbing the country’s world-leading death toll of over 223,000. The prime-time debate in Nashville, Tennessee, was a less acrimonious and more substantive affair than their previous showdown on September 29, which devolved into insults and name-calling. This prompted the debate organisers to put in place muted microphones during the candidates’ opening statements on each topic to minimise disruption. The debate, moderated by NBC’s Kristen Welker, saw plenty of personal attacks between 74-year-old Trump, a Republican, and his 77-year-old Democratic rival, Biden, whose mutual

Ruthless MI beat listless CSK by 10 wickets

S h a r ja h , O c t 2 3 (PTI): Trent Boult and Jasprit Bumrah's devastating pace-bowling spell in tandem before Ishan Kishan's batting heroics helped Mumbai Indians' post a comprehensive 10-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in a completely lopsided IPL match here on Friday. With the embarrassing loss, CSK are all but out of reckoning for the play-offs with just six points from 11 games, while MI jumped to the top spot with 14 points from 10 matches. Bowling in tandem, Boult (4/18) and Bumrah (2/25) reduced CSK to 21 for 5 inside powerplay with three and two wickets respectively and CSK never recovered from there, limping to 114 for 9, largely thanks to Sam Curran's 52. Chasing 115 for a win, Kishan (68 not out), opening in place of regular skipper Rohit Sharma who missed out due to a hamstring injury, and Quinton de Kock (46 not out) knocked off the required runs in just 12.2 overs. The duo toyed with the CSK bowling attack on a dreadful day for the MS Dhoni-led side to carry their bats through the innings. The left-handed Kis-

The South African de Kock played second fiddle during his 37-ball innings which had five fours and two sixes. Earlier, Boult and Burmah produced a devas-

tating pace-bowling spell in tandem to restrict CSK to 114 for 9. Put in to bat, CSK were five wickets down inside powerplay overs with Boult and Bumrah taking three and two wickets respectively. CSK could reach to 114 for 9 thanks largely to Sam Curran's enterprising half-century. The young Englishman mixed caution with aggression to

2 Zimbabwe players test positive for Covid

Ha r a r e , O c t 2 3 (IANS): Two Zimbabwe players, Regis Chakabva and Timycen Maruma - who were on standby for the upcoming tour of Pakistan - have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, both were part of the provisional 25man squad for the white-ball tour of Pakistan, but were left out of the 20-man party that arrived in Islamabad

earlier this week. The two were roommates for a week while in a bio-secure bubble set up for players placed on standby at the ZC Academy House in Harare. The detection of positive cases will, however, not affect the series against as Zimbabwe’s main squad had stayed in a secluded wing of a different hotel, away from the standby players. They tested negative before departing for Islamabad, and

upon reaching there. The Zimbabwe players will now have to undergo another test at the end of their quarantine period on Tuesday. Zimbabwe are scheduled to play three ODIs and as many T20Is in Pakistan. While the ODIs, part of ICC World Cup Super League, will be played on October 30, November 1, and 3 in Rawalpindi, the T20Is are scheduled for November 7, 8, and 10 in Lahore.

Sharjah, Oct 23 (PTI): A hamstring injury ruled Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma out of the IPL game against Chennai Super Kings here on Friday. Rohit Sharma suffered the injury during MI's last game against Kings XI Punjab on Sunday. In a statement issued before the CSK game, Mumbai Indians said, "Rohit Sharma has suffered left leg hamstring strain during Mumbai Indians' last outing." "Rohit has made good progress over last four days, while the management is taking one day at a time monitoring the recovery process in consultancy with BCCI," the statement added. Veteran Kieron Pollard took over the leadership duties from Rohit. "Rohit has been advised rest for the match against CSK. Kieron Pollard will lead the team tonight," the statement added. Defending champions MI are on course for making the play-offs. Their next game is on Sunday.

ninth wicket with Imran Tahir (13 not out) was the highest partnership of the CSK innings which showed the rest of the batsmen in poor light. CSK had a horror start and slipped to 3 for 3 after two overs and lost two more wickets before the powerplay ended. It all started with Ruturaj Gaikwad, back into the side, being trapped LBW in the opening over bowled by Boult for a duck. Ambati Rayudu fell to a short ball from Bumrah, gloving an easy catch to de Kock. N Jagadeesan followed him to the pavilion off the next ball, poking at one to be caught by Suryakumar Yadav. Faf du Plessis, the only CSK to batsman to shine this season so far, edged one to give de Kock his second catch of the night. Skipper Dhoni's (16) poor run continued as he fell to leggie Rahul Chahar while going for a big one off a tossed-up delivery after having smacked a six of the previous ball. Ravindra Jadeja (7) hit a boundary before pulling one straight to Krunal Pandya at mid-wicket to give Boult his third wicket and leave CSK in tatters at 21 for 5.

season, and we are delighted to have him here at Mumbai City. He is young and has tremendous potential to improve a lot in the future. Phurba’s reflexes and command during the games is something that caught our eye, and we are hoping he can continue his development here at Mumbai City, and play a huge role in the club’s successes for years to come.”

ABU DHABI, OCT 23 (AGENCIES): Khabib Nurmagomedov will be close to becoming the greatest MMA fighter of all time if he wins at UFC 254, says UFC president Dana White,. The undefeated lightweight champion faces interim champion Justin Gaethje in a unification bout on Saturday, reports BBC Sports. The Russian, 32, has a 28-0 record before facing the 31-year-old American, who is 22-2, on Abu Dhabi’s Yas Island. “Khabib’s a big superstar,” said White. “But if he beats Justin, he’s on his way to GOAT status.” White added: “He’s looking down the barrel of not only being the greatest to ever do it in this division but being the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.” Nurmagomedov has hinted at retiring if he reaches a 30-0 record and, asked at the pre-fight press conference about achieving the same status as boxing greats Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson, he said: “I don’t know if I can ever be-

Kapil was inducted into the Inter national Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame in 2010. “The big hearted #Kapildev our captain, with a never say die attitude, has recovered. For this mighty giant of Indian cricket nothing is impossible,” tweeted Kirti Azad, also a former teammate of Kapil. “Kapil The invincible @therealkapildev is a great friend and super human being. Captain, Looking forward for a meal together soon,” he added. Another World Cupwinning for mer India cricketer Yuvraj Singh said, “Dear paji. Praying for your speedy recovery! Get well soon please ...after cricket I still need some golfing lessons.” Nicknamed the ‘Haryaa Hurricane’, Kapil is also a Lieutenant Colonel in the Indian Territorial Army.

come close to these people. “I didn’t have this goal, I just want to win every fight. We’ll see in the future because I’m not finished yet. When I retire, I want to retire [as the] undisputed, undefeated UFC lightweight champion.” This fight will be Nurmagomedov’s first without his father and coach Abdulmanap in his corner after he died in July, aged 57, following complications caused by coronavirus. “The most important thing for me is to stay close with your family and friends, because today you’re champion, tomorrow everything can change,” said Khabib. “I’m so proud of these

things because I think I was a good kid for my parents.” Khabib was also asked specifically about an animation paying tribute to his father and charting his journey from wrestling bears as a child. He replied: “A lot of people have sent me the video. It’s a great video, I really like it.” After beating Dustin Poirier last September, Nurmagomedov was due to face Tony Ferguson in April, but the long-awaited match-up was cancelled for a fifth time because of coronavirus travel restrictions. Gaethje then stepped in to fight Ferguson at UFC 249 and produced the best performance of his career to become the interim light-

weight champion. “I’m not even supposed to be here, this was supposed to be Tony Ferguson,” said Gaethje. “I got that opportunity and I took it from him. “I’m a performer, I always show up under the lights. That’s what I do. On Saturday I will leave everything, give everything, and be proud of my performance.” Nurmagomedov is renowned for his wrestling skills, which have stifled and gradually broken down his previous 28 opponents. Gaethje was an AllAmerican wrestler in college so is confident of defending takedowns but also possesses devastating punching power, winning his last four fights by knockout. He has earned nine bonuses from his seven UFC fights - for Performance or Fight of the Night - and UFC has billed this bout as ‘the most dominant versus the most violent’. “More than Conor [McGregor] and Dustin and other guys, he knows how to wrestle, but what about wrestling for 25 minutes?” asked Nurmagomedov.

Giro D’Italia: Australia’s Jai Hindley wins Stage 18

Laghi di Cancano (Italy), Oct 23 (IANS): Just 15 seconds separate the top three riders of the 103rd edition of the Giro d’Italia after a sensational shake-up on the Stelvio resulted in Jai Hindley winning Stage 18 and Sunweb teammate Wilco Kelderman fighting back to end Joao Almeida’s 15-day reign in pink. A masterclass by the Ineos Grenadiers team of Tao Geoghegan Hart on Thursday saw Australia’s Rohan Dennis lead his British teammate and compatriot Hindley over the snow-clad summit of the Stelvio with a noticeable gap on the struggling Kelderman after Portugal’s Almeida and the other race favourites had dropped like flies on the longest and highest climb of the race being broadcast on Eurosports network. Kelderman hit the wall on the descent and looked to be losing his chance to take the pink jersey - but he rallied on the final climb to the

Lakes of Cancano, limiting his losses to his teammate Hindley and Geoghegan Hart, who fought tooth and nail for the win as Spain’s Pello Bilbao closed in. With team leader Kelderman behind, Hindley had forced the Stage 15 winner from East London to do all the work on the succession of hairpins on the final climb of Torri di Fraele. But with the finish line gaping, the 24-yearold zipped clear to deny Geoghegan Hart a second success in a race in which he has taken on the mantle of Ineos team leader following the early withdraw-

al of Geraint Thomas. Bahrain-McLaren’s Bilbao came home for third place ahead of Denmark’s Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) before Kelderman, caught and left for dead by both riders at the start of the climb, dug deep to keep his pink dream alive. Although he conceded over two minutes - plus bonus seconds - to Hindley and Geoghegan Hart, Kelderman did enough to hold a 12-second advantage over his teammate at the end of a fantastic stage for the ages, with the British youngster just three seconds further back.
