India’s def. interest were compromised by previous govts: Modi’s swipe at Cong

ROHTANG, OCT 3 (PTI): Attacking the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the country’s defence interests were compromised for a long time as their governments kept “playing around with files” and delayed procurement of fighter jets, arms, ammunition and other strategic equipment. Addressing public meetings in Himachal Pradesh after inaugurating strategically-important Atal Tunnel, the prime minister said “Nothing is more important for us than the defence of the country. But for a long time, the country has also witnessed an era when the defence interests of the country were compromised. The Air Force of the country kept demanding a modern fighter plane, while they kept opening and closing files after files, and kept playing around with those files.”

PM Modi with others inaugurates the Atal Tunnel, in Manali, Saturday (PTI )

Modi’s reference assumes significance in the wake of government’s repeated assertion that UPA regime had delayed decisions on the acquisition of Rafale jets from France. “Be it ammunition, modern rifles, bulletproof jackets, equipment that are used in cold weather conditions, everything was kept in abeyance. There was a time when the strength of our ordnance factories would make many jitters, but the country’s ordnance factories were left on their own,” he said after inaugurating the 9.02-km tunnel, which reduces the travel distance between Manali and Leh by 46 km and the travel time by

four to five hours. It has been billed as the world’s longest highway tunnel, built at a cost of over Rs 3,000 crore. Hitting out at the Congress, which headed the coalition government at the Centre during 2004-14, Modi cited a number of strategically important projects, from Atal Tunnel to the airstrip at Daulat Beg Oldi in Ladakh and Tejas fighter aircraft production, to assert that they were delayed or almost forgotten. The then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had inaugurated the approach road to Atal Tunnel in 2002, but the project was almost forgotten after his govern-

Oxford Covid vax likely within 6 months: Report LONDON, OCT 3 (PTI): There is growing hope that a vaccine against COVID may be given the green light by health regulators by the end of 2020 to be rolled out for a vaccination programme in six months’ time or even less, according to a UK media report. Political parties yet to decide on by-election candidates Correspondent

KOHIMA, OCT 3 (NPN): With by-polls to the 14Southern Angami-1 and 60 Pungro Kiphire assembly constituencies scheduled on November 3, political parties in Nagaland have yet to take a call on fielding their candidates. The ruling PDA chairman and NDPP president, Chingwang Konyak informed Nagaland Post that a decision will be taken after consultations with its coalition partner, BJP. State BJP president and PDA co-chairman, Temjen Imna Along informed that the party was yet to make any decision in this respect. He said a decision will be made after consultations with BJP legislature party leader and deputy chief minister Y. Patton and others after their return from Delhi. Meanwhile, opposition NPF party secretary general, Achumbemo Kikon informed his party was yet to take any decision regarding the by-elections. Congress party leaders could not be contacted till the time of filing this report. It may be recalled that

by-poll to the 14-Southern Angami-I constituency was necessitated after the demise of sitting NDPP legislator and Speaker Vikho-o Yoshu; while the 60-Pungro Kiphire seat fell vacant after the demise of sitting NPF legislator T. Torechu. After the two seats fell vacant owing to the demise of sitting MLAs, the strength of the NPF was reduced to 25 while the NDPP was reduced to 20. Both NDPP and BJP are pre-poll allies who formed the Progressive Democratic Alliance (PDA) for the 2018 assembly election in a seat-sharing agreement of 40:20 seats. NDPP contested in 40 constituencies and won 18, while BJP contested in 20 constituencies and won 12 seats. The NPF contested in 58 constituencies and won in 26 while JD(U) and an independent won one seat each. The nascent National People’s Party contested in 25 and won in two. In March 2019, NPP MLAs- Imnatiba Jamir (13-Arkakong A/C) and Khumo Khiamniungan (57Thonoknyu A/C) merged with the NDPP. Later, in

June 2019, lone JD(U) legislator, G Kaito Aye also merged with the NDPP. The by-poll has not unexpectedly, given rise to demands by party members of PDA constituentsNDPP and BJP- to set up a candidate at least to the 60 Pungro-Kiphire assembly constituency following the demise of the sitting NPF legislator. While the NDPP would like to contest both the seats, sources said BJP party workers were insisting that BJP set up a candidate since the seat was allotted to it as part of the 2018 seat sharing arrangement. Going by the seat sharing arrangement, NDPP will contest the 14 Southern Angami-I and BJP the 60 Pungro-Kiphire constituencies. As for the NPF, it held the 60 Pungro-Kiphire seat and was expected to fight the by-poll to retain the seat. There are also speculations that if by-polls are held, then it could mean that the expected solution to the Naga political issue may be delayed. However, in the eventuality of a solution, ECI could further postpone the bypolls.

Work on only 1,300 meters was completed by 2013-14, he noted, adding that the project would have been completed by 2040 by this pace before his government took charge in 2014 and speeded it up at an unprecedented rate. Fo r m e r H i m a c h a l chief minister and veteran Congress leader Veerbhadra Singh recently said the project was originally envisaged by former prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1972, while a foundation stone was laid for the tunnel in 2010 by the then UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

The written examination has been rescheduled on November 22. The chief minister also thanked the Narendra Modi government for extending all round support to his government, saying that because of this, not only Assam but the entire Northeastern region has been marching towards the path of progress.

M’laya reiterates commitment Villagers foil eviction drive in Manipur to construct entry check point Correspondent

Correspondent Shillong, Oct 3: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday reiterated his government’s commitment to construct an entry point at Umling, Ri-Bhoi District to check influx of ‘outsiders’ into state. Sangma said that government is in fact trying to hasten construction of the check gate at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district. “We have sanctioned a prefab for the new sanctioned project and this would come up in 60 days time,” the Chief Minister told reporters after emerging out of the meeting with deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong, Health and family welfare minister A.L Hek, sports and youth affairs minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, information technology minister Hamletson Dohling, excise minister Kyrmen Shylla and public works department (building) minister, Dasakhiat Lamare. Sangma informed that the project sanctioned earlier would have taken at least a year or more to be built and so the project was shelved and the new project sanctioned. On the de-sanctioning of the Umling check gate in Ri-Bhoi district, the Chief Minister said that there has been some miscommunication about it.

Biggest surge in COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya

Correspondent

S h i llo n g, O ct 3 : Meghalaya registered the biggest surge in Covid-19 cases so far with 423 persons testing positive for the viral infection on Saturday, pushing the active cases to 2,083, health officials said. Two more persons died due to Covid-19 infection, taking the fatality count due to 54, Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War said.On the other hand, 93 more patients recovered from the viral infection as on Saturday, taking the number of recoveries in the state to 4,319. Of the new 423 Covid-19 cases detected on Saturday, East Khasi Hills district alone accounted for 339 cases, including 337 civilians and two from the armed and paramilitary forces. With 1,507 active COVID-19 cases, East Khasi Hills, which includes Shillong is the most affected district in the state.

After there were reports that the government has de-sanctioned the project for building the entry-exit point at Umling, several NGOs questioned the Government’s sincerity to check influx. “We are following registration for anyone who is coming in and COVID-19 testing is compulsory,” Sangma said, adding that at the moment all visitors are being registered at the entry points at Byrnihat. Meanwhile, the tourism department has clarified that a new sanction has been issued by the Department of Tourism for construction of the facilitation centre (Entry Point) at Umling on September 29. “This pre-fabricated facility is being constructed on Government land belonging to the Transport Department which is already levelled and is ready for construction of the super structure. The new proposal was required, given the need to integrate COVID 19 screening and testing facility along with the Facilitation Centre,” Commissioner Secretary Tourism department, Dr. Vijay Kumar D said. “The construction of this facilitation centre on the new land is expected to be Completed by the end of November 2020 and operational by December 2020,” he said.

IMPHAL, Oct 3: A group of villagers in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Saturday prevented three families from being rendered homeless by foiling an eviction drive of the government. Irate over the action of government authorities, villagers demanded shifting of the permanent campus of the National Sport University at Koutruk in Imphal West district if such act was to continue in the area. Barely a day after serving a notice, a team of officials of Imphal West district administration along with a large number of armed police tried to evict three families in the periphery of the under construction campus of the National Sport University. The notice was served to Leishangthem Sanatomba and his two brothers, Ranjit and Yaima, of Koutruk Awang Leikai on Friday. Yaima told reporters that the notice was found stuck on the wall of his house. As per the eviction notice served to the three families on Thursday, they ‘illegally encroached’ land already allocated to for establishment of National Sport University. It asked the families to move out of the land before they were evicted which would be carried on next day (Thursday). The three families as

well as villagers of Koutruk strongly denied the authority’s claim of the land being illegally encroached and produced Dag Chitha (land allocation document) issued by the concerned SDO 40 years ago in 1980. “We are settling here for the last more than 40 years since the land was allocated to our late father at that time,” Yaima said. He said that even if the state government needed the land for taking up developmental work, they must be given enough time so that they can arrange to move out. Besides, no alternative land for rehabilitation has been provided. Yaima, one of the three siblings, asked where they would go when they are asked to leave their house within 24 hours. ‘It is not an act of being humane. We are not birds that can go flying anywhere. It is similar to asking us family members to commit suicide,’ he al-

leged. The villagers also demanded shifting of the campus of the National Sports University if the authorities are to render families homeless in the name of developmental activities. A villager leader alleged that the attempt to evict the families was against the conditions which villagers had set while donating the land for construction of the permanent campus of the sport university. L Jugindro, a member of the Lai Committee of the village, said that the villagers had already donated land for the construction of the proposed police outpost and the same should be constructed at the donated land. The villagers will raise objection if the authorities of the state government try to forcibly evict families and may demand shifting of the university campus, he warned.

Grand Alliance seat-sharing formula in Bihar Farmers continue to protest farm laws

PATNA, OCT 3 (PTI): The opposition Grand Alliance in Bihar sought to steal a march over the ruling NDA on Saturday when it announced its seat-sharing formula as part of which the RJD, spearheading the coalition, will contest on 144 seats. The coalition members also endorsed RJDs Tejashwi Yadav as its face though a minor constituent of the multi-party formation announced a sudden exit alleging betrayal. At a press conference here, Yadav announced the number of seats assigned to the Congress, the CPI(ML), the CPI(M) and the CPI and disclosed that his party was getting the lion’s share of 144 seat. Among other allies, Congress has been given 70 seats, far more than it had contested in the 2015 assembly polls in alliance with the RJD and Chief Minister Nitish Kumars JD(U). The Congress will also be fielding its candidate in Valmiki Nagar Lok Sabha seat where bypoll will be held on November 7. Among the Left parties, the CPI(ML) has been given 19 seats, followed by

CPI (six) and four seats to CPI(M). Lalu Prasad’s party will be accommodating ally in adjoining Jharkhand the JMM and Vikashheel Insaan Party (VIP), its coalition partner since the Lok Sabha polls last year, from its own quota of constituencies. Bihar has a 243-member Assembly. The RJD had won 81 seats in 2015 while Congress had bagged 27 seats. Yadav told media persons that the party will declare in another two to three days the seats it will be giving to the two parties from its quota. Congress leader Avinash Pandey, while backing Tejashwi Yadav as the

Chief Ministerial candidate, showered praises on the former Deputy CM for having taken on Narendra Modiled BJP at a tender age in the assembly polls held five years ago. The grand old party has been assuaged with an offer of 70 seats, many more than 41 it had got five years ago. Pandey also remarked, “our respectable Chief Minister Nitish Kumar too was with us. But then the apharan (hijacking) of popular mandate took place and he ended up siding with those whom he had fought against in the polls. JD(U) chief had made an abrupt exit from the Grand Alliance in 2017 which had followed Yadavs

name cropping up in a money laundering case. Kumar is seeking a fourth consecutive term in the upcoming elections, having been backed by the BJPs top brass for leading the NDA at the hustings. He is, however, faced with a roadblock in form of rebellion from LJP chief Chirag Paswan. The piquant situation has also prevented the NDA from coming out with its own seat-sharing formula, though less than a week is left before filing of nominations for the first of the three phases of elections comes to a close. In his speech, Yadav took potshots at Kumar saying “I am a theth (pure) Bihari, who knows how to keep his promises. And my DNA too is pure”. The “DNA” remark was an oblique reference to an infamous jibe at Kumar by Prime Minister Modi during 2015 Bihar polls while the two were involved in a bitter political rivalry. Kumar had taken affront to the remark, holding it as an insult to all residents of Bihar, and rallied RJD and Congress along in launching a counter-offensive.

VIP walks out of alliance

Bollywood set-designer-turned-politician Mukesh Sahni’s Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) walked out of the Mahagathbandhan on Saturday, moments after the Grand Alliance announced its seat-sharing arrangement for the Bihar assembly elections. Mukesh Sahni, popularly known by the sobriquet “Son of Mallah”, fumed after other leaders had left the venue “we have been stabbed in the back.” “It is hereby announced that my Vikassheel Insaan Party will not be a part of an alliance wherein the trust reposed by us has been betrayed and we have not been accorded due respect”. Earlier, it was reported in the media that VIP party, which claims support among fishermen community, will be getting around half-a-dozen seats. VIP sources later said the party may now explore “other options” like the front floated by Jan Adhikar Party chief Pappu Yadav along with Chandrashekhar Azad Ravans Bhim Army.

CHANDIGARH, OCT 3 (PTI): Punjab farmers' protest against the Centre's new farm laws continued on Saturday as they squatted on rail tracks for an indefinite period. The agitating farmers raised slogans against the government and said that the stir will go on till their demand for revoking the new laws was not accepted. A total of 31 farmers' bodies have joined hands to step up their agitation. They had announced to block rail tracks from October 1 for an indefinite period. Farmers have blocked rail tracks at many places including Dhablan (Patiala), Sunam (Sangrur), Budhlada (Mansa), Gidderbaha (Muktsar), Barnala, Bathinda, Faridkot, Gurdaspur, Rupnagar, Phillaur, Samrala and Moga. Farmers under the banner of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee have been squatting at rail tracks in Amritsar and Ferozepur since September 24. According to Krantikari Kisan Union president Darshan Pal, besides blocking rail tracks at 33 places, farmers have also staged sitins outside 24 petrol pumps, nine toll plazas, four shop-

ping malls, a power thermal plant and a foodgrain godown belonging to some corporate houses. Farmers have also given a call to boycott some corporate houses and their products in the state. According to them, the Centre wants to "benefit" a few corporate houses with the "black laws". 'Dharnas' were also being staged outside the houses of five BJP leaders including former Punjab BJP chief Shwait Malik. In Ferozepur, women have also joined farmers who have been agitating at a rail track near Basti Tankan Wali. At Amritsar, protesting farmers burnt the effigies of the government. In Phagwara, police prevented the farmers from moving towards the residence of Union Minister Som Parkash. Protesters wanted to 'gherao' the residence of the minister. Police personnel led by Superintendent of Police Manwinder Singh stopped the farmers about 200 meters away from the minister's residence. Barricades were put up at all the entry points to stop the farmers from going

towards the minister's residence, said farmers. After not being allowed to go towards Parkash's house, farmers staged a sit-in on the road. Addressing the protesters, Balbir Singh Rajewal, president of Bhartiya Kisan Union (Rajewal) claimed that the agitation against “anti-farm” laws has now snowballed into a mass movement. He said that farmers were not averse to holding talks with the Centre if invitation for the same comes from the Prime Minister's Office. “We will not accept any leader from the Punjab BJP for talks as we are boycotting the state BJP leaders” he said. The Punjab unit of the BJP had constituted an eight-member committee to reach out to farmers to apprise them of the benefits of the new farm laws. Fa r m e r s h ave ex pressed apprehension that the Centre's farm reforms would pave a way for the dismantling of the minimum support price system, leaving them at the "mercy" of big corporates. President Ram Nath Kovind had given assent to the three contentious bills.

Textile sector key in realising Former CBI officer arrested in Rs. 25 lakh bribery case self-reliant India, says PM Modi helped to build trade and cultural relations with the world, he added. He lauded the ICCR and the Uttar Pradesh Institute of Design for their efforts in bringing people from different countries to participate in the webinar on the theme “Weaving Relations: Textile Traditions”. He said in the textile sector one can see the country’s history, diversity and immense opportunity. Speaking of India’s textile traditions, Modi said naturally-coloured cotton and silk have a long and glorious history, and the diversity in textiles shows the richness of the country’s culture. He said there will be something unique about the textile traditions in every community, every

village and every state, and also highlighted the rich textile traditions of the nation’s tribal communities, according to the statement. He said in all of India’s textile traditions there is colour, vibrancy and an eye for detail. Noting that the programme is being organised in the context of Mahatma Gandhi’s 150th birth anniversary celebrations, the prime minister said Gandhi saw a close link between the textile sector and social empowerment and converted the simple ‘charkha’ into a key symbol of India’s independence movement. World over the textile sector employs many women, he said, adding that a vibrant textile sector will add strength to efforts of women empowerment.

Ram temple foundation laid, but jungle raj reigns in UP: Sena MUMBAI, OCT 3 (PTI): The Shiv Sena on Saturday hit out at the Yogi Adityanath government over the Hathras incident, saying that “jungle raj” prevails in Uttar Pradesh even as foundation stone for Ram temple has been laid at Ayodhya in the state. The ruling party in Maharashtra has also written to President Ram Nath Kovind demanding security by CRPF personnel for the kin of the victim, alleging they are “held captive and being threatened by officials, denying them free speech and movement”, a party leader said. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. But there is no ‘Ram rajya’ (ideal governance) in Uttar Pradesh. ‘Jungle raj’ is prevailing in UP in terms of the law and order situation,” the Sena said in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’. “Atrocities against women continue to happen and the incidents of rape and murder of young women are on the rise in that state,” it said. The Sena said recent incidents of atrocities against women in UP have failed to move the government in that state as well as the Centre. “A 19-year-old woman in Hathras was raped and murdered, which triggered an outrage across the country. In her dying declaration, the victim said that she had been raped. But the UP government now says that she was not raped. Soon after,

an incident of gang-rape also took place in UP’s Balrampur,” the Sena added. “But despite all this, neither the rulers in Delhi nor the Yogi Adityanath government were moved. The government itself says that when there was no rape, why is the opposition crying hoarse. But if the woman was not raped, why did the police cremate her in the dead of the night?” it asked. “Earlier, when the UP government led by Akhilesh Yadav withdrew Yogi Adityanath’s security cover, the latter had cried in the Parliament. Now he himself is the chief minister, but women in his state are not safe,” the party said. The UP police stopped Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from visiting the grieving family in Hathras, it said. “Gandhi was caught by collar and pushed to the ground. Humiliating a leader of a prominent political party in such a manner is a gang-rape of democracy,” it said. It said that BJP spokespersons went to town over TV channel debates in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. “But the same people are now saying that the Hathras victim was not raped. The victim’s dying declaration has no value!” it said. The Sena said that the country was never so “lifeless and helpless” in the past. Meanwhile, Sena workers held a demonstration in Aurangabad against the Uttar Pradesh government.

It is alleged that Sinha, posted in Economic Offences Wing of the CBI, was handling a case of alleged cheating against mining company Usha Martin regarding a lease given to it for an iron ore mine in Jharkhand in 2005. On the basis of information from a source, a CBI team nabbed the private person involved in the case and also recovered the bribe amount which was delivered to the retired officer, they said. in 2005 over five other applicants. The state government had favoured Usha Martin in its recommendation to the Centre for the allotment of mine as the company had allegedly promised that it would use the ore in its steel plant in Ghamaria in the state. The undertaking by

the company led the state gover nment to recommend it as a special case for captive consumption. The CBI has alleged that the company later backtracked from the undertaking taking advantage of the fact that the special reason was not specifically mentioned in the Cabinet note in this regard.

Milking tragedies

W

hat would have been another sensational crime in UP which gradually fades away has instead evolved into a political fight between the ruling BJP government led by chief minister Yogi Adityanath and the opposition notably the Congress. The horrific brutal gang rape and murder of a Dalit Valmiki woman by four upper caste Thakurs on September 21 has given the the opposition an opportunity to hit at the BJP government in UP, which prime minister Narendra Modi has made as his new home state after convincingly winning the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha election from Varanasi. The way in which the UP police handled the case-refusing to register an FIR, based on the confessional statement of the dying victim and later disposing off the victim’s body at an odd hour of 2.30 a.m. after refusing to allow the family to see the body or participate in the religious rituals; suggest some criminality in these actions. Worse, the UP police wilfully delayed action in arresting the rape accused. These actions of the UP police are certainly instances of obstruction of justice. Like the probe into late Sushant Singh Rajput’s suicide case, which became politicised, the Hatras rape has also turned into a political battle between the BJP and other opposition parties. The battle is for Dalit votes since they form a significant vote bank in Aligarh, Hatras, Mathura, Bulandshahr, Noida and other adjoining districts. Dalits in these belts, had switch from BSP to BJP in recent elections. A Dalit MP, Rajvir Diler of the BJP represents Hatras besides several Dalit MLAs who are also from BJP. It is said that Diler’s father who is also BJP MLA carries his own plate and tumbler to any function held in the region. Probably this illustrates how Dalits are still cursed by untouchability. Despite Dalits having voted for different parties in the past, they remain deprived, economically, socially and politically except when election comes. Perhaps the shocking Hatras rape has galvanised Dalits who are now expressing their frustration and anger at being treated like pariahs even by the law. Noida has become the epicentre of the protests which has also spread to MP, Rajasthan and Punjab where Dalits form a sizeable vote bank. These protests are indeed worrisome for the BJP particularly the UP chief minister whose social coalition of upper and lower castes had given the party so many seats. The protests indicate that the social coalition that the BJP has forged to win elections, is eroding if not collapsing. The sharp divide between the upper caste rulers -Thakur, Brahmin and Baniya, and the other low castes and minorities is becoming sharper. Later, the brutal rape and murder of another Dalit girl in Balrampur, about 300 km from Hathras added fuel to the fire. For the BJP, the Unnao rape involving its party MLA, rocked the nation especially the outrageous manner in which the UP police conducted the case. These only highlighted how the Yogi Adityanath government has been handling the law and order. The Congress and other opposition parties have grabbed the opportunity to attack the BJP to win Dalit votes. Even the BJP used to do that. All these prove that political parties only milk tragedies for electoral benefits and do very little to change the mindset of the dominant castes whose votes they also need.

DailyDevotion The Place of Ministry

He said to them, “This kind [of unclean spirit] can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” —Mark 9:29 “His disciples asked Him privately, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ ” (Mark 9:28). The answer lies in a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. “This kind can come out by nothing but” concentrating on Him, and then doubling and redoubling that concentration on Him. We can remain powerless forever, as the disciples were in this situation, by trying to do God’s work without concentrating on His power, and by following instead the ideas that we draw from our own nature. We actually slander and dishonor God by our very eagerness to serve Him without knowing Him. When you are brought face to face with a difficult situation and nothing happens externally, you can still know that freedom and release will be given because of your continued concentration on Jesus Christ. Your duty in service and ministry is to see that there is nothing between Jesus and yourself. Is there anything between you and Jesus even now? If there is, you must get through it, not by ignoring it as an irritation, or by going up and over it, but by facing it and getting through it into the presence of Jesus Christ. Then that very problem itself, and all that you have been through in connection with it, will glorify Jesus Christ in a way that you will never know until you see Him face to face. We must be able to “mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31), but we must also know how to come down. The power of the saint lies in the coming down and in the living that is done in the valley. Paul said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) and what he was referring to were mostly humiliating things. And yet it is in our power to refuse to be humiliated and to say, “No, thank you, I much prefer to be on the mountaintop with God.” Can I face things as they actually are in the light of the reality of Jesus Christ, or do things as they really are destroy my faith in Him, and put me into a panic?

Naga Regiment’s baptism with fire

n my previous article‘50 Glorious Years of the Naga Regiment’ published last week,I dwelled on the historical 16 Point Agreement between the Naga People’s Convention and the Government of India, which led to creation of the State of Nagaland in 1963 and later raising of the Naga Regiment on 01 No 1970. The relevant aspects of the agreement were also incorporated in the Constitution vide Article 371 A. This was alsoa unique occasion in the history of the Indian Army because it was for the first time that an Infantry Regiment had been raised as outcome of a political settlement. This milestone could be made possibledue to genuine love and concern of Jawahar Lal Nehru and his daughter Indira Gandhi for the Tribal society. After the 1st Battalion of the Naga Regiment was raised on 01 Nov 1970 the recruitment of the personnel was completed by Apr 1971. The Training of the new battalion commenced in all earnestness at the Kumaon Regimental Centre, Ranikhet. The Regiment was new but the Nagas have a rich tradition of valour and fighting. The Assam Regiment and Assam Rifles have recruited Nagas in large numbers in the past and found them easily adaptable to the regimental life. The tough Naga recruits soon established a reputation for themselves by winning various intercompany competitions for the Commandant’s Banner. One of the Naga boy, Re-

“C

cruit Kap Mao had the distinction of being adjudged the Best Recruit. In May 1971 Mr HokisheSema CM of Nagaland, who had played a stellar role in the formation of the Naga Regiment, paid a visit to the Regiment at Ranikhet. In the sub-continent there were disturbed conditions due to turmoil in erstwhile East Pakistan (now Bangla Desh) over issue of non-transfer of power to Awami League which had secured an electoral victory. Pakistan Army had cracked down on the civil population due to which lakhs ofrefugees had taken shelter in India straining our economy. War clouds started hovering and preparations began for a war in support of the Bangladeshis. During this period, training of 1 NAGA was in progress but due to imminent hostilities it was curtailed and by middle Aug 1971 the battalion received orders for move and itstaged forward to Gaya in Bihar. The unit did not stay at Gaya for long and was again relocated and by 20 Oct 1971 it was concentrated at Behrampore in Midnapore District ,West Bengaland placed under 4 Infantry Division, which was part of 2 Corps. Two companies of the Battalion were further tasked to reinforce the Border Security Force Posts near Lalgola and Kazipara, near the head of the Ganges Delta in West Bengal along the East Pakistan Border. Incidentally Maj Gen TN Raina, MVC was promoted as Lieut Gen-

eral and tasked to raise 2 Corps and was assigned the Western Sector. The Pakistan Army deployed on the border wasactive to gain intelligence on deployment, movements and likely intentions of Indian Army offensive and was also to conduct sabotage on Indian side of the Border. However the professionalism and alertness of the Nagas led to capture of many Enemy Agents together with recovery of large quantity of mines and explosives. In early November, 1 NAGA were given a new and an independent task. They were moved further South to Shikarpur in Nadia district and ordered to guard against a possible Pakistani preemptive along Bheramara- Shikarpur axis as it provided the shortest approach to Behrampore on the National Highway. Two companies of BSF and a Mountain Battery were placed under their command. On 12 Nov 1971, two Pakistani Companies walked into a welllaid ambush of the wily Nagas. The Pakistanis did their best to break the Ambush but instead suffered heavy casualties. The Company Commander Maj (later Brig) Ian da Costa handled the Ambush deftly and broke contact with the enemy while inflicting heavy casualties with Medium Machine Guns, Mors and Artillery. This was the first action for the Naga Regiment too and what its men achieved that day was no mean achievement for a newly raised

unit. While the Pakistanis suffered heavy casualties, 1 NAGA lost four killed, five wounded and six captured as they had run out of ammunition after fighting valiantly. In view of this successfuloperation the battalion personnel were conferred gallantry awards of one Vir Chakra and two Sena Medals 1 NAGA next participated in a deception plan of 2 Corps of the Indian Army. The plan was to confuse the enemy and make it guess where the blow will be delivered by the Indian Army. The Corps Commander Lieut General TN Raina, MVC wanted the Pakistanis to tie down their troops on the Shikarpur- Bheramara Axis. Accordingly the Nagas occupied numerous positions, simulated heavy movement of vehicles and conducted patrolling over a large area to simulate an offensive, in order to deceive the Pakistanis. Dummy Tanks were positioned, Trucks without silencers to create tank noise and guns and mortars were moved and frequently redeployed. The deception plan was successfully executed as the 2 Corps offensive faced less resistance. As explained earlier 1 NAGA was part of 4 Infantry Division which was under 2 Corps. Initially the brigade of which 1 NAGA was part of was placed as 2 Corps reserves. However on 05 Dec 71, 1 NAGA was tasked to Attack along with 5 JAT at Meharpur but the enemy abandoned its position without a fight

A child’s outlook of the world will also be affected because the remnant of abuse in their life will continue to torment them mentally, emotionally and physically. In some scenarios, it is difficult for a child to get over the incidents and they become the absolute victims of that dreadful situation. Speaking of the corruption in our context and the actual situation behind the lime light, we also, cannot ignore the fact of “ism” that shadows every air which is also the root cause of every closed files and cases. Also, many times cases are closed down at higher levels because of the fear of community stigma and social contempt. When we look at the churches today, there is no question asked that the churches work for the upliftment of the society, but the view of church and the society as two different entities have made us lost its engagement in the societal matters. Today, we need our church to come and voice out for the society. And, what better voice do we have, than the church? However, in order to purge out this evil problem of child abuse in the society, the families, the Churches, the governing bodies, NGO’s, educational institutions, community leaders, different apex bodies, should come out stronger than other days before our land becomes a land of child abuse. One of the best ways to overcome problems by a child is through proper education, as education plays a vital role in identifying the inception of these atrocities. Education motivates and enables a child to learn the life skills: social skills, problem solving and coping skills, promoting peace and self protection training etc. These trainings help a child to build up more etiquettes and confidence in socializing within the society. Therefore, as Good Samaritan Christians, we should all come together and reach out to the unreached, and be the voice for the voiceless to share the love of God in humanity and in justice. “Our Children is our Pride”. The Enemy had cleared out of the Area opposite Shikarpur as such the regiment was tasked to clear it of mines and booby traps. The battalion also constructed a Class 9 vehicular bridge on the Mathabhanga River from salvaged Pakistani material. On 14 Dec 1 NAGA once again rejoined 4 Mountain Division and were tasked to secure the West Bank of Madhumati River in East Pakistan for the Divisional Attack on the East Bank.Alfa and Charlie Companies neutralised the enemy localities on the flanks of the offensive whereas Bravo Company held the West Bank doggedly under heavy enemy shelling. The enemy on East bank tried to break out but was surrounded by the assaulting Brigades and the enemy finally surrendered on 15 Dec 71.The war came to an end after fall of Dacca on 17 Dec when India announced cessation of hostilities. The personnel of 1 NAGA were awarded one Vir Chakra and three Sena Medals for acts of gallantry during the entire war. After the war the battalion was initially located at Jhansi and later at Lansdowne where it carried out training and won laurels in various competitions. After the peace tenures 1 NAGA moved for operational deployment to Akhnoor in J&K. In 1977 the battalion

moved to Dehradun and in recognition of its achievements was presented with the coveted ‘Colours’ on 6 May 1978 by Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the President of India.Gen TN Raina, MVC the Chief of the Army Staff and Colonel of the Kumaon and Naga Regiments also graced the occasion. The Naga soldiers were inducted into the war straight from the drill square, with the ‘Kasam’(Oath of allegiance) administered during Attestation Parade still fresh on their lips. The youngest Regiment joined the vanguard of the Indian Army proving that they were no novice when it came to the Art of Warfare. In some fierce encounters during the war they proved their mettle,as tough recruits belonging to the various clans from Nagaland and Manipur and transformed into trained soldiers they performed with discipline and training as of their counterparts in the other senior regiments. World Animal Day 4th October

W

orld Animal Day is observed on 4th October worldwide to create awareness among people regarding animals : To raise the status of animals and improve upon their Welfare Standards: Recognise animals as sentient beings and to respect their feelings. This day is a reminder for all of us not just to love and care for the pets in our homes but to appreciate and respect all wild animals, endangered species and those threatened by environmental devastation or lack of protection. Therefore, on this day let us show kindness and compassion to our voiceless animals and spread some awareness about their basic rights. Animals also have feelings and emotions just as human beings do. As such, it is the responsibility of every human being to love, care and protect our animals and prevent cruelty and all forms of abuse such as beating/hitting, forcing animals to struggle and work in extreme weather conditions, inhumane slaughter, etc. Animals have as much of rights to live as we human beings do and we owe them much for our work, food, milk, eggs, companionship and all the joy and love they render to us. The least we can do for them is to provide them with their basic

rights. Some of the basic rights of Animals are as follows: 1. Animals should be housed in safe and comfortable shed. 2. Sufficient floor space with the freedom of movement without overcrowding, obstruction or fear. 3. Stray or homeless animals be provided with shelter and food. 4. Any injured/sick/ diseased animals be treated with our love, care and compassion. 5. Daily adequate well balanced diet and clean water to be provided. 6. It is the bounded duty of the owner to provide timely basic health facilities like vaccinations, deworming and regular health check-up of animals. 7. Mandatory Health Record Certificate for any animal that is to be transported from one place to another. 8. Animals should be treated with respect throughout their lives and provided with even more care during their old age. “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” – Mahatma Gandhi Veterinary Hospital Kohima

Reader’s Post Role of the ‘haves’ during a pandemic Sir,

Lack of education or knowledge related to the pandemic among rural sections poses severe consequences to the entire health of the country or state as well as its economy. It should be an obliged duty of the privileged to make sure that people in rural sections are aware and safe in this pandemic because in order to justify their education, what is its use if they cannot protect their fellow citizens? It is not only the job of the government but also the educated lot to take a systematic approach in tackling this crisis rather than focusing solely on urban areas. HC terms as absurd UPSC stand on seats reserved for disabled environment which is”. “You (UPSC) should step into the shoes of the candidates who are preparing for two-three years for the civil services exam and give up other avenues of employment to focus on the All India Civil Services. Who asked you to keep the vacancies fluctuating? Keep it fixed,” the bench said. It listed the matter for further hearing on November 16 by when the UPSC

will clarify whether the number of seats for disabled would also increase if there is an increase in vacancies. The petition, filed through advocates Krishan Mahajan and Ajay Chopra, has contended that the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPWD) Act of 2016 mandates that every government establishment shall reserve 4 per cent of its total vacancies for those with benchmark disabilities.

JAIPUR, OCT 3 (PTI): Five people including former BJP Mahila Morcha district president and three government employees have been arrested in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur for allegedly running a sex racket, police said on Saturday. Three others including a former office-bearer of the Congress-affiliated Seva Dal, Poonam Chaudhary alias Pooja, are absconding and searches are being carried out to nab them, they said. The sex racket came to light after the parents of a 17-year-old girl lodged a complaint at Mahila Thana, Sawai Madhopur, last month alleging that the accused forced her to have sexual intercourse with several people, the police said. Investigating Officer and Deputy Superintendent of Police, Women’s Cell, Omprakash Solanki said so far five people -- Sunita Verma alias Sampat Bai, Sandeep Sharma, Rajulal Raiger, Shyoram Meena and Heeralal Meena -- have been arrested.

The accused women used to send girls to government employees in exchange for money or getting work done, he said. Verma, who is the former district president of BJP Mahila Morcha, was sacked from the post after her arrest on September 26, the party said. The victim alleged that Verma forced her to have sexual intercourse with several people. She was raped and the act was filmed. The video was later used by the accused to blackmail the girl and force her yield to their demands, according to police. Solanki said the minor was sexually assault several times between October 2019 and May 2020. “The accused were allegedly running the racket and we are investigating the matter to ascertain how many other girls were in their trap,” Solanki said. Verma and Heeralal Meena are under police custody till October 6 and are being interrogated, he said.

A case has been registered at the Mahila Thana under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including that of gang rape, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the police said. BJP district president Bharat Lal Mathuria said Verma was sacked from the post after the matter came to light and she has also been expelled from the party. “Sunita Verma was the district president of Mahila Morcha but the party has expelled her for her involvement in the case,” he said. “She was in the party for the last three years and was given the post due to her work. She used to work for the poor but when and how she got involved in such activities is not known

virtual meeting held under the framework of IndiaMyanmar foreign office consultations. In the meeting, Shringla said India and Myanmar are working towards operationalising the Sittwe Port by the first quarter of next year and that the tendering process for 69 bridges proposed under the ambitious India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway will begin soon. Sittwe Port is part of the Kaladan multi-modal transit transport project which is being viewed as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. The port will connect India’s landlocked northeastern region with the Bay of Bengal through Mizoram. In his remarks, Shringla also said that Myanmar’s handing over of 22 Indian insurgents has been deeply appreciated by India and sends a strong message of “deterrence to inimical elements on both sides.”

to us,” he said. Mathuria said the Mahila Morcha’s executive committee will be dissolved and a new one constituted soon. Hem Singh Shekhawat, district president of the Seva Dal, a grassroots front organisation of the Congress, said Poonam Chaudhary’s appointment as the district president of the women’s wing in February 2019 by the then Seva Dal district president was “unauthorised”. Only the state chief of women’s wing can appoint a district president, he said. “District president of Seva Dal cannot appoint a district president of the women’s wing. Therefore, the appointment was unauthorised. Secondly, the woman was never seen in any function (of Seva Dal)

and hence her affiliation is under doubt,” he said. Shekhawat said, “I have apprised the Seva Dal office-bearers in New Delhi about the matter.” The National Commission for Women has asked the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) to look into the matter, NCW member Rajulben Desai said. Desai along with another NCW member Shyamala S Kundar was in Jaipur to meet government officials to discuss the status of crime against women in Rajasthan. “We came to know about the matter today and have asked the NCPCR to look into the matter and submit a report to the government,” Desai told reporters.

What is this absurd argument? Either both are frozen or neither are frozen,” a bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan said to the counsel for Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The bench was hearing a PIL challenging this year’s notice announcing the details of the civil services preliminary examination, which is to be held on October 4. The plea claims that the notice neglects the minimum reservation to be provided to disabled persons. The plea by NGO Sambhavana has alleged that in the exam notice only expected approximate vacancies for the disabled are mentioned and not the four per cent mandatory reservation mandated under the law. The observation by the court came after the UPSC said while the advertised vacancies in the All India Civil Services were 796, the number may go up by the time the candidates are selected. However, it also said that the seats for disabled persons would remain the same as was announced in the public notice. It further said that it was not the persons who were unsuitable, “it is the

KOLKATA, OCT 3 (PTI): BJP national vice-president Mukul Roy has not been named in the chargesheet submitted by the Kolkata Police special investigation team (SIT) to a city Court in connection with a case where money was allegedly taken from a city-based person assuring him a place in a committee of the railways, a senior officer said on Saturday.

Roys name is, however, on the list of the suspects included in the nine-page chargesheet in which the police have named three persons - two close associates of Roy and a resident of Purulia, he said. All three of them have been booked under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) including those for cheating, forgery, using forged documents and criminal intimidation including criminal conspiracy, he said. One person had in 2019 lodged a case alleging that he was duped of around Rs 70 lakh by Roy and three named in the chargesheet others, who, he claimed, had assured him of a berth in one of the Railway committees.

NEW DELHI, OCT 3 (PTI): Chief of Army Staff General M M Naravane and Foreign Secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla will travel to Myanmar on a two-day visit beginning Sunday with an aim to further expand ties in a range of areas including connectivity, defence and security. Announcing the visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it will provide an opportunity to take stock of the existing bilateral ties and strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest. It will be Gen Naravane’s first visit to any foreign country after he took charge as the Chief of Army Staff on December 31 last year. The visit by Gen Naravane and Shringla assumes significance as it comes in the midst of the Indian Army’s bitter border standoff with the Chinese military in eastern Ladakh as well restrictions on foreign

HATHRAS, OCT 3 (PTI): The SIT will look into all issues raised by the family of the 19-year-old Dalit woman in Hathras, and the strictest action will be taken against the culprits, Uttar Pradesh Additional Chief Secretary, Home, Awanish Awasthi, said on Saturday after meeting the victim’s kin here. A decision has also

the dead of night near her home on Wednesday with her family alleging that they were hurried into carrying out her last rites by local police. The incident triggered widespread outrage and protests. On Thursday, the Hathras administration clamped prohibitory orders barring the assembly of more than four people in the district, where scuffles broke out as politicians, including from the Congress and the TMC, as well as the media persons tried to access the village. About 300 police personnel stood on guard to prevent anybody from entering. Today, however, the administration lifted restrictions on the entry of media persons. To a query, Awasthi said, “If people’s representatives want to come, five people will be allowed”. “We also met some people’s representatives and requested them to help maintain social harmony,” he said.

“The SIT inquiry is on and it will continue to do its work. The family members have raised certain issues. Whatever points and the complaints they have raised, the SIT will note them, and we will make all efforts to ensure that each of them is addressed,” Awasthi said, without elaborating. The officer said that they would submit a report to the chief minister. The visit by the two top officials came as a massive controversy raged over the incident with the opposition targeting the Adityanath government. “The first report of the SIT was received yesterday evening and within two hours orders were issued for the suspension of the then SP, CO, inspector, senior sub-inspector and constable,” Awasthi said. The victim, who was assaulted and allegedly gang-raped on September 14, died of her grievous injuries in the early hours of Tuesday in a Delhi hospital and was cremated in

DIMAPUR, OCT 3 (NPN): NPCC President K. Therie has condemned what he described as “heinous rape and assault of 19 year old Hathras victim on Sept 14, 2020 and her subsequent forced cremation” on September 29. In a statement, Therie also said his party resolved to “express its strong disapproval and condemn the conduct of UP chief minister and his police and administration’s handling of mourner and the entire case.” He strongly condemned the BJP for its treatment of women in UP and alleged that the party has no affection towards women. He also said the conduct of the BJP in UP “violated all forms of law, culture, customs and humanity’ which betrayed Modi’s slogan of “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.” Therie also said the manner in which Congress delegation led by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were manhandled and denied “access to the mourning family had once again exposed the BJP’s intolerance towards established democratic practices”. He said the police and administration’s conduct of intimidating the victim’s family by not allowing them to perform the last rites and forcible cremation the body was another example of BJP’s misuse of government machinery.

Armenia-Azerbaijan fighting rages on BAKU, OCT 3 (AP): Heavy fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan continued Saturday in their conflict over the separatist territory of Nagorno-Karabakh, while Azerbaijan’s president criticised the international mediators who have tried for decades to resolve the dispute. Fighting that started September 27 is the worst to afflict Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas since the 1994 end of a war that left the region in Azerbaijan under the control of ethnic Armenian local forces backed by Armenia. Shushan Stepanian, a spokeswoman for the Armenian Defence Ministry, told The Associated Press that “intensive fighting is taking place along the entire front line,” and claimed that Armenian forces had shot down three planes. Azerbaijan’s defence ministry did not respond to the claim of planes being shot down, but said Armenian forces had shelled civilian territory within Azerbaijan, including the city of Terter. Nagorno-Karabakh officials have said more than 150 servicemen on their side have been killed so far. Azerbaijani authorities haven’t given details

on their military casualties but said 19 civilians have been killed and 55 more wounded. Nagorno-Karabakh was a designated autonomous region within Azerbaijan during the Soviet era. It claimed independence from Azerbaijan in 1991, about three months before the Soviet Union’s collapse. Full-scale war that broke out in 1992 killed an estimated 30,000 people. By the time it ended in 1994, Armenian forces not only held Nagorno-Karabakh

itself but substantial areas outside the territory’s formal borders. Several United Nations Security Council resolutions have called for withdrawal from those areas, which the Armenian forces have disregarded. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in a television interview that the forces must withdraw from those areas before fighting can stop. In the interview with al-Jazeera, a transcript of which was distributed Saturday by the presidential

press office, Aliyev criticized the so-called Minsk Group of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, which has tried to mediate a resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute. One of the reasons behind the current fighting is that “the mediators do not insist or exert pressure to start implementing the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council,” he said. “We have no time to wait another 30 years. The conflict must be resolved now.” Aliyev said.

Partial lockdown imposed in Madrid MAD R I D , O CT 3 (IANS): A partial lockdown has been imposed in Madrid as Spain was trying to control a second Covid19 wave in the one of the worst-affected countries in Europe, the media reported on Saturday. According to authorities, more than three million people will be affected by the new measure under which the capital city’s residents will be allowed to travel outside their home districts for essential journeys only starting from the weekend, the BBC reported. Also under the new lockdown, bars and restaurants will not be allowed serve after 10 p.m., and a maximum of six people will be permitted to meet in any setting. The measures, which will also take effect in nine towns around Madrid, were demanded by the federal government. But the restrictions have been opposed the capital city’s authorities, saying it would cost the Madrid’s economy 8 billion euros. In a tweet on Saturday, Madrid’s regional president Isabel Daaz Ayuso tweeted: “Thanks for the chaos, (Prime Minister) Pedro Sanchez.”

Trump admitted at military hospital WASHINGTON, OCT 3 (PTI): US President Donald Trump was shifted to a military hospital where he was given Remdesivir therapy following treatment with an experimental drug after testing positive for COVID-19, a development that upended his election campaign just weeks before the presidential polls. Trump, 74, and his wife First Lady Melania Trump, 50, tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday. “Going well, I think! Thank you to all. LOVE!!!” Trump tweeted on Saturday. Trump, who showed “mild symptoms” of COVID-19, was f lown to Walter Reed Military Medical Centre in Bethesda, a Maryland suburb of Washington DC, on Friday. Trump walked from his residence to take Marine One at the South Lawns of the White House to travel to Walter Reed hospital. While the president was taken to the military hospital, the first lady stayed back at the White House. Trump’s physician Dr Sean Conley said the president was “fatigued but in good spirits” and, in a later update, that he was doing well. Conley said medical specialists have recommended Remdesivir therapy to treat the president’s COVID-

19 infection. “I am happy to report that the president is doing well,” Conley said in a health bulletin on Friday night, the first after the president was moved to the military hospital as a precautionary measure. “He is not requiring any supplemental oxygen, but in consultation with specialists we have elected to initiate Remdesivir therapy. He has completed his first dose and is resting comfortably,” he said. The Trump administration had issued an emergency use authorisation for Remdesivir earlier this year after the drug showed moderate effectiveness in improving outcomes for patients who were hospitalised with the coronavirus. In a video shared on Twitter, Trump said he is “doing very well” and thanked people for their support. “I think I’m doing very well but we’re going to make

sure that things work out,” Trump said in the 18-second video that he tweeted moments after he arrived at the military hospital. “The first lady is doing very well. So, thank you very much. I appreciate it. I will never forget it,” he said. Conley earlier said that as a precautionary measure the president received a single 8-gram dose of Regeneron’s polyclonal antibody cocktail. “He completed the infusion without the incident,” the doctor said. In addition to the polyclonal antibodies, the president has been taking zinc, vitamin D, famotidine, melatonin and a daily aspirin, he said. Conley said the first lady remains well with “only a mild cough and headache”, and the remainder of the first family “are well and tested negative for SARSCoV-2 today”. O n Fr i d ay, W h i t e House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows had said the president was showing “mild symptoms” of COVID-19. “Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the president will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days,” White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.

KABUL, OCT 3 (agencies): Attackers set off a truck bomb in Afghanistan’s eastern Nangarhar province on Saturday, killing at least 15 people and wounding dozens, according to provincial officials, as violence continues in the war-torn nation despite peace talks taking place in Qatar, reports Reuters. Attaullah Khugyani, a spokesman for the provincial government, said the number of casualties, most of whom were civilians, could rise and that dozens of people were also injured by the blast in Ghani Khel district. Obaidullah Shinwari, the Nangarhar provincial council’s member, said 52 people were injured in the blast. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack. Another major rebel group, the Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, which is led by Abdel-Wahid Nour, rejects the transitional government and has not taken part in the talks. The Sudanese communist party, which is part of the protest movement that helped topple al-Bashir, also denounced the deal as a “true threat to Sudan’s integrity and future.”

Halford says new Judas Jamie Foxx seemingly confirms return Sushant case: AIIMS forensic Rob Priest songs are ‘monsters’ in Marvel’s next Spider-Man movie body hints at suicide, not murder

T

he forensic department of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in its report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has “hinted” that the death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput was suicide and not murder, sources said on Saturday. The AIIMS forensic panel under Dr. Sudhir Gupta was formed at the request of the CBI in August to assist in giving medico-legal opinion in connection with the death of the late actor.

According to AIIMS sources, the forensic team in its report has hinted the death of Sushant as suicide, thus rejecting the claims of ‘poisoning’ and ‘strangling’ made by the actor’s family and their lawyer. The doctors of the AIIMS refused to share further details as the matter is sub judice. The remarks came after the AIIMS forensic body submitted its report to the federal agency earlier this week, where it also hinted that his death was not a case

of organic poisoning. However, CBI sources remained tight lipped on the issue and maintained that the agency is probing all the angles, and no angle has been ruled out yet. On September 28, CBI spokesperson in a statement said that the agency is conducting a professional investigation into the death of Sushant in which all aspects are being looked at and no aspect has been ruled out as of date. Sushant was found dead on June 14 in the Mont Blanc Apartment in Bandra in Mumbai. His family members raised suspicion of Sushant having been murdered. The CBI registered a case on August 6 on the notification of the Centre after the Bihar government recommended for a federal agency probe on the complaint of the late actor’s father K.K. Singh. The CBI team reached Mumbai on August 20, a day after the Supreme Court gave its nod for the federal agency probe. The CBI recorded the statements of several people in the case and also visited his flat, Cooper hospital and Waterstone resort. (IANS)

udas Priest singer Rob Halford spoke to Animal House Radio about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's follow-up to “Firepower” album. Released in March 2018, “Firepower” was the second LP to feature Richie Faulkner, who was selected to fill the void left by founding guitarist K.K. Downing following his exit in 2011. Asked if it’s getting harder each time for him and his bandmates to top their previous albums, Halford said, “It's best not to think about it, because then you're just gonna go around and around in circles and you get internal disputes and stuff. I think we're confident enough. Look, we’ve been doing it for so long. That doesn't mean to say it’s easy, or any easier, but I think we understand — each of us understand, especially the writing team of Glenn [Tipton, guitar] and Richie and myself — we understand

where we need to go and what we need to do. And I tell you, some of these next ideas, they're just — oh my God. I can't begin to explain. “I think we carried the spirit and the great power that our fans gave us as we went around the world nearly three times with ‘Firepower’, I think we carried that with us back to the studio, back to the writing sessions," he continued. “Because some of these songs that I've got here on my phone — believe it or not; everything's on the phone — they're monsters. Even in a very, very rough, primitive stage, they're great — they're really, really good. Across the pond, Firepower landed at position No. 5 on the U.K. album chart. It marked the band's highest ranking, and first time in the Top 10, since "British Steel" reached No. 4 in 1980. Elsewhere, "Firepower" also became PRIEST's first-ever No. 1 in Sweden. Firepower was recorded by British producer Andy Sneap, the band's longtime collaborator Tom Allom and engineer Mike Exeter (Black Sabbath). The cover artwork for "Firepower" was created by the Chilean/Italian artist Claudio Bergamin. (Blabbermouth)

amie Foxx, who previously portrayed Electro opposite Andrew Garfield's webslinger in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, will reprise the role opposite Tom Holland's Spidey in the untitled Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news -- reporting the actor was "in final talks" for Marvel Studios and Sony's third Spider-Man collaboration -- and Foxx seemingly confirm it on Friday, resharing a congratulatory message from Django Unchained co-star Keith Jefferson on Instagram Stories. Most perplexing about the news is that Amazing Spider-Man 2 flopping was what led Sony to hatch an unprecedented deal with Marvel to share the character. What was not immediately clear was whether Foxx would be playing the same version of Electro he did in that movie or getting a do-over with the character. He seemed to tease the latter in a since-deleted Instagram post, writing, “Tell Spidey let's run it back! Super excited to

part of the new Marvel Spider-Man new installment. And i won't be blue in this one!! but a thousand percent bada**!!!” This would mark the second time the Spider-Man franchise has tapped an actor to put a new twist on a past character, following J.K. Simmons' return as J. Jonah Jameson in Far From Home. (Simmons previously played JJJ in the Tobey Maguirestarring trilogy.) Electro's arrival on the Spidey scene would also clock yet another Sinister Six member in the MCU, alongside Michael Keaton's Vulture, Jake Gyllenhaal's Mysterio and Michael Mando's Scorpion now canon. In addition to Holland, Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori are expected to return to complete the trilogy, which will be helmed by Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home director Jon Watts. The next Spider-Man movie will swing into theaters on Dec. 17, 2021. (ET)

arvey Weinstein has been charged with six additional counts of sexual assault ahead of the disgraced producer’s Los Angeles trial on sex crime charges, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey’s office announced Friday. The amended indict-

ment against Weinstein added three felony counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation stemming from a pair of new victims coming forward. The incidents include an alleged rape of a female victim that took place at a Beverly Hills hotel be-

tween September 2004 and September 2005 and another alleged rape of a different woman that occurred on two occasions at a Beverly Hills hotel between November 2009 and November 2010 “I am thankful to the first women who reported these crimes and whose

courage have given strength to others to come forward,” District Attorney Lacey said in a statement. “The willingness of these latest victims to testify against a powerful man gives us the additional evidence we need to build a compelling criminal case.” Following Friday’s announcement, Weinstein now faces a total of four counts each of forcible rape and forcible oral copulation, two counts of sexual battery by restraint and one count of sexual penetration by use of force, involving five victims for crimes that span from 2004 to 2013. If found guilty to all of those charges, Weinstein could receive up to 140 years to life in state prison, prosecutors said Friday. Weinstein — who tested positive for coronavirus earlier this year while in prison — is currently serving a 23-year sentence after being found guilty of New York charges for third-degree rape and a first-degree criminal sexual act. Prosecutors are seeking the temporary custody of Weinstein from New York, with an extradition hearing is set for December 11th in Buffalo, New York. (Rolling Stone) K Y M C

FRENCH OPEN: Altmaier shocks 7th seed Berrettini

PARIS, OCT 3 (AGENCIES): Qualifier Daniel Altmaier delivered a surprise straight-set victory over seventh seed Matteo Berrettini to reach the French Open fourth round, reports BBC Sports The 22-year-old beat the Italian 6-2 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 in Paris. It was a composed display from the German world number 186, who is yet to drop a set during his first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam. He joins Sebastian Korda in the last 16 as the first qualifiers to reach that stage at Roland Garros in nine years. Altmaier will now face 17th seed Pablo Carreno Busta in the last 16. The US Open semi-finalist was the winner of an all-Spanish meeting with 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut, seeing off his compatriot 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-4. Carreno Busta, who was a break down in the fourth set, hit 65 winners to make it through in three hours and 22 minutes. Russian 13th seed Andrey Rublev breezed past Kevin Anderson to reach the fourth round at Roland Garros for the first time. win 6-3 6-2 6-3. The 22-year-old, who had never won a French Open match before this week, will play either Marton Fucsovics or Thiago Monteiro for a place in the quarter-finals.

Sofia Kenin through to fourth round

Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin breezed into the fourth round at Roland Garros with victory over Irina Bara. The American fourth seed, 21, won 12 games in a row to beat Romanian qualifier Bara 6-2 6-0 in

Paris. Kenin hit 32 winners and saved 10 break points as she set up a meeting with either France’s Fiona Ferro or Patricia Maria Tig of Romania next. However, eighth seed Aryna Sabalenka was beaten by Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur in a fluctuating match. Jabeur, seeded 30th, beat the Belarussian 7-6 (9-7) 2-6 6-3 to reach the fourth round for the first time. She had triple set point at 6-5 in a scrappy first set but was broken, before storming back from a 5-1 deficit in the tie-break

to take the opener in 57 minutes. However, a refocused Sabalenka took the second in just 19 minutes to force a decider. Sabalenka saved three match points but sent a forehand long to hand Jabeur victory. The 26-year-old will next play either 2016 champion Garbine Muguruza or American Danielle Collins.

Murray and Skupski reach quarter-finals

Britons Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski reached the French Open men’s

doubles quarter-finals with victory over second seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos. Murray and Skupski put in an impressive performance to beat last month’s Italian Open champions 6-3 4-6 6-4. The 13th seeds will face German pairing Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies next. Fellow Briton Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram also beat Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin to reach the last eight. Australian Open champions Salisbury, 28, and 36-year-old American Ram easily beat the French duo 6-3 6-2. The third seeds will play either Bruno Soares and Mate Pavic or Horia Tecau and Jean-Julien Rojer. Murray, 34, has never won the doubles title at the French Open - his previous best result was the reaching the quarter-finals in 2017 with Soares. He and Skupski, 30, recovered well after being edged out of a tight second set, breaking their opponents at the first opportunity in the decider. The two did not face a break point in the final set and served the match out with ease.

11 Indian women Aakash Chopra and Neesham team may engage in war of words travel to SL

New Delhi, Oct 3 (PTI): The Indian women’s team in all likelihood will resume its bilateral engagements with a tour of Sri Lanka, which the BCCI is trying to schedule after the women’s IPL from November 4-9 in the UAE. A senior BCCI official confirmed that the women’s team could tour the island nation right after the WIPL (Challengers series) but a big bone of contention could be the 14-day mandatory quarantine in Sri Lanka. “There is a bright a chance that India will be travelling to Sri Lanka after women’s IPL for a threematch ODI and three match T20 series,” a senior BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity. “Obviously, quarantine duration is an issue as we saw that Bangladesh men’s team’s tour was postponed. However we are very hopeful that our women’s team will be playing Lanka,” the official added. It is expected that just like the men’s team will directly fly to Australia from Dubai, the women cricketers are also expected to leave for Sri Lanka after completing their WIPL engagement which concludes on November 9.

Neesham pointed our Chopra’s T20 numbers in reply.

ABU DHABI, OCT 3 (AGENCIES): Former India cricketer and commentator Aakash Chopra and Kings XI Punjab player Jimmy Neesham engaged in a war of words on twitter after Chopra called the Kiwi all-rounder ‘not a matchwinner’ for KXIP, reports India Today. Chopra had criticised Neesham during his Youtube video saying, “They play Neesham, an overseas fast bowler, who neither bowls in the powerplay nor in the death overs. He is neither a great finisher nor a big batsman who bats in the top four or five. So why is Kings XI Punjab playing him? You are playing a player who is not really a match-winner. First thing is that Kings XI Punjab is not playing the right team. Honestly, they are the only team in

the world where Mujeeb is not able to make it to the playing XI after being in the squad.” Responding to Chopra’s analysis, Neesham pointed out Chopra’s poor T20 average and strike rate. He took to twitter and said,” Averaging 18.5 striking at 90 doesn’t win many matches either.” The former Delhi batsman was a part of Kolkata Knight Riders for 7 matches in first two IPL seasons where he scored just 334 runs at an average of 18.55 and a strike rate of just over 91. While in a quick reply, Chopra also said, “Correct my friend. That’s why nobody picks me anymore. I get paid for doing something else. I’m glad that you don’t have an issue with my observations but with my cricket stats. Go well for the rest of the #IPL.”

I-League Qualifiers: meditation replaces ice-baths Bielsa ‘most authentic manager’: Guardiola

some teams are looking at different nutrition strategies in order to help with the recovery process.

K o l kata , O ct 3 (IANS): With a number of Covid-19 safety regulations in place for the teams set to participate in the upcoming I-League Qualifiers, a training session is no more the same, especially with regards to the recovery sessions. The qualifiers are slated to kick-off on October 8 where five teams -- FC Bengaluru United, Bhawanipore FC, ARA FC, Garhwal FC and Mohammedan SC -will play in a round-robin format and face each other once. Matches are slated to take place at the VYBK Stadium in Kolkata and

Kalyani Stadium till October 19. While some teams are looking at different nutrition strategies in order to help with the recovery process, others are also trying out different exercise routines to aid with the same. All the players and coaches are mandated to spend four days in isolation once they check into the Covid safety bubble. And now it has been three days since FC Bengaluru United resumed their training after the time spent in isolation. Head coach Richard Hood has been charting different nutritional supple-

ments to help the players recover from their training sessions. “Ice-baths are a good way for the body to recover. But since that is not possible right now. So we are looking at other alternatives,” Hood told i-league.org. “But due to the safety precautions we are using different nutrition strategies to help the players recover from their training sessions. A cold shower also does some good.” ARA FC from Gujarat were the first outstation team to arrive in Kolkata. “Our physio has charted our different stretches to help the players with their recovery process. But nutrition plays a very big part when you cannot have ice baths after a training session,” said ARA FC head coach Vivek Nagul. “Food makes a lot of difference in the recovery process. Additionally, we are also looking at different nutritional supplements and energy drinks as well,” he continued. The medical staff has been working hard, espe-

cially in the ARA camp, charting out more ways to overcome the challenges thrown at everyone by the Covid-19 pandemic. While sanitising is a strategy that is largely being used both inside and outside the world of football, Rai revealed that the players have been taking extra care ahead of the training sessions. Nagul feels that though such restrictions are in place, it is the onus of the players and the officials to adhere to them in order to ensure that football can be played safely in India once again. “This is the first sporting event in India after the lockdown, so we must be careful. We need to appreciate all the effort put in by the organisers. At the end of the day it feels good to see that there are people out there who are putting their own lives at risk to ensure that football is not being defeated by a disease,” said Nagul. “We appreciate these efforts by the organisers and are ready to adjust our ways in order to play football again.”

MANCHESTER, OCT 3 (AGENCIES): Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has described Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa as “the most authentic manager” before his side’s trip to Elland Road, reports BBC Sports. Guardiola, 49, regards Dutchman Johan Cruyff as his coaching inspiration, but hugely admires the Argentine, 65. The Spaniard met Bielsa in Argentina before becoming Barcelona B boss and has adopted many of his philosophies. “He is probably the person I admire the most in world football - as a manager and as a person,” said Guardiola. “He is the most authentic manager in terms of how he conducts his teams. He is unique. Nobody can imitate him, it’s impossible. “I don’t see him quite as much but when I get the pleasure to spend time with him, it’s always inspirational.” The charge sometimes levelled against Bielsa is that for all the plaudits he receives, he lacks major

Pep Guardiola andMarcelo Bielsa.

honours. While Guardiola has won eight league titles, two Champions Leagues and five domestic cups in a glittering career, Bielsa’s best achievement has arguably been guiding Argentina to gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics. U n t i l h e wo n t h e Championship with Leeds last season, his major club feat was leading Athletic Bilbao to the Europa League

and Copa del Rey finals in 2012, both of which they lost. However Guardiola, whose side face Bielsa’s on Saturday, does not believe the lack of silverware matters. “The value of a manager does not depend on how many titles or prizes you won,” said Guardiola. “My teams won more titles than his but in terms of knowledge of the game and

many other things, including training sessions, I am still away from him. EPL:Chelsea beat Palace 4-0; Chilwell stars in debut Ben Stokes: England all-rounder

STAMFORD BRIDGE, OCT 3 (AGENCIES): Ben Chilwell produced a star turn on his Premier League debut for Chelsea as Frank Lampard’s side beat Crystal Palace 4-0 on Saturday. Chilwell marked his 100th appearance in the competition with his fifth goal to break the deadlock early in the second half and crossed for Kurt Zouma to double the lead 66 minutes in. Palace have already beaten Southampton and Manchester United this season, but a run of five consecutive K Y M C

defeats to Chelsea and just two wins in 11 attempts at Stamford Bridge in the top flight was hardly encouraging pre-game reading. Indeed, Edouard Mendy - making his first league start for the Blues was largely untested in goal as the home side eased to a third win in six games in all competitions this season through a Jorginho penalty double. It had looked like being a potentially frustrating contest for Chelsea, Timo Werner shooting straight

at Vicente Guaita with one of their few chances of a disjointed first half. Kai Havertz and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is again being courted by Bayern Munich, were lively in the Palace half but created little for central striker Tammy Abraham. So it was that Chelsea’s breakthrough came through an unlikely source, Chilwell smashing the ball past Guaita from six yards out after Mamadou Sakho had made a mess of an attempted clearance in the build-up.

Everton beat Brighton 4-2

D o m i n i c C a l ve r t Lewin scored his ninth goal of the season and James Rodriguez netted twice as Everton beat Brighton to make it four Premier League wins from four for the impressive tabletopping Toffees. H o w e v e r, i t w a s another game that will prompt questions about the quality of goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for both club and country. All was going well for the home side after Calvert-

Lewin rose highest to head in at the back post to cap another excellent week that saw him score his second hat-trick of the season and earn a first call-up to the senior England squad. But in the closing stages of a first-half in which he had barely been tested, England keeper Pickford dropped a tame bouncing ball at the feet of Neal Maupay, who then slotted the ball in on the turn. The heavy rain during the match was undoubtedly a contributing factor but the poor error comes not long after the shocking mistake he made in the Carabao Cup win at Fleetwood. Thankfully for the home side, they were able to reclaim the lead before the break when Rodriguez picked out fellow Colombian Yerry Mina, who headed in from a corner. And it was Rodriguez himself who put the game beyond Albion, firstly sliding in to finish off Alex Iwobi’s chipped cross at the back post and then finding space in the same area to tap home Abdoulaye Doucoure’s pass.

IPL:DC beat KKR by 18 runs; RCB beat RR by 8 wickets

Sharjah/Abu Dhabi, Oct 3 (PTI): Shreyas Iyer showed his class with a captain’s knock and pacer Anrich Nortje honoured his skipper’s heroics by bowling a splendid penultimate over in Delhi Capitals’ 18-run victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in a thrilling IPL match here on Saturday. Iyer’s (88 no off 38 balls) magnificent powerhitting after Prithvi Shaw’s opening act propelled Delhi Capitals to an impressive 228 for four after being put into bat first by Dinesh Karthik. If Iyer and Shaw we r e n’ t n o t e n o u g h , Rishabh Pant (38 off 17 balls) dusted off his rustiness with a quickfire knock. The target was difficult but not impossible but Delhi produced the best effort by a pace bowling unit on a placid track with KKR finishing at 210 for 8. Harshal Patel, as Ishant Sharma’s replacement, did well enough to finish with 2 for 34 in 4 overs while the everimproving Nortje (3/33 in 4 overs) was also impressive. However, it was Kagiso Rabada (1/51 in 4 overs), who dismissed the dangerous Andre Russell (13) cheaply, was taken to task by Eoin Morgan (44 from 18 balls) and Rahul

Patrick Cummins (0/49 in 4 overs) was taken to task by Shaw in the Powerplay as he repeatedly cleared the in-field. Mavi opening the bowling also got the hammering as he lost his length early on, bowling either too full or too short to the DC openers. Such was Shaw’s form that even Shikhar Dhawan (26 off 16 balls) was overshadowed despite some decent hits in a 56-run opening stand. However, the man who entralled one and all was Iyer with some monstrous hits. The two spinners Varun Chakravarthy (1/49 in 4 overs) and Sunil Narine (0/26 in 2 overs) were simply sent into the orbit.

Tripathi (36 off 16 balls) in the 18th over that got KKR 23 runs. With 31 to get from 12 balls, Nortje bowled a superb 19th over getting rid of Morgan and only giving five runs in the process. Wi t h 2 6 n e e d e d off the last over, Marcus Stoinis (1/46 in 4 overs) proved his utility as a bowler by removing Tripathi

with a slower yorker after being smashed by the batsman in an earlier over. With their third win, Delhi (six points from four games) move to the top of the table. Earlier, if the Powerplay belonged to Shaw, who blazed his way to 66 off 41 balls with four boundaries and as many sixes, Iyer dominated the remaining

part of the innings with his silken smooth batting as he scythed the opposition attack with seven fours and half a dozen sixes. A few of Iyer’s sixes landed either in the top tier or got lost in the car park adjoining the stadium, such was the timing rather than brute force that the DC skipper used. Containment was

never possible on such a track with Capitals batsmen hitting as many as 14 sixes and 18 boundaries in the entire innings. After two good games, young Kamlesh Nagarkoti (1/35 in 3 overs) and Shivam Mavi (0/40 in 3 overs) got harsh lessons as Dinesh Karthik couldn’t risk completing their quota of overs.

Abu Dhabi, Oct 3 Captain Virat Kohli roared back to form with an unbeaten 72 and stitched a 99-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal (63) to power Royal Challengers Bangalore to a comfortable eightwicket win over Rajasthan Royals in an IPL match here on Saturday. This was after wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal snared three wickets in an impressive bowling show that helped them restrict RR to 154 for 6. Kohli’s knock came off 53 balls with seven fours and two

sixes. It was RCB’s third win in four matches. Padikkal yet again produced an impressive innings before he was dismissed by Jofra Archer in the 16th over, after hitting six fours and one six. The young RC B opener allowed his captain to get in and settle down before Kohli produced some of his trademark shots later on to accelerate. The RCB needed 31 runs after Padikkal’s dismissal and another in-form batman AB de Villiers (12 not out) ensured that his side reached the target with five balls to spare. Having failed to score big in his earlier three innings (14, 1, 3), Kohli took time to settle down and scored mostly in ones and twos initially. Padikkal continued his good form having scored 56, 1, 54 in his three earlier innings. He reached to his fifty in 34 balls. He was the dominant batsman in RCB’s opening stand of 25 runs with Aaron Finch who was out in the third over with a score of 8. Earlier, Chahal returned with figures of 3/24 from his four overs to restrict RR to 154 for 6. Chahal jumped to joint top spot in the bowlers’ chart with Kings XI Punjab’s Mohammed Shami on eight wickets. Opting to bat, the

Royals lost their top-order batsmen cheaply inside the powerplay overs but recovered to some extent to post a decent total, thanks to Mahipal Lomror’s knock of 47. Royals skipper Steve Smith (5) fell cheaply for the second consecutive time with Isuru Udana taking his wicket in the third over. He was followed in the hut by Englishman Jos Buttler (22) who failed to come up with a big score yet again. Sanju Samson (4), who had two sensational innings of 74 and 85 in the first two matches, was dismissed in the fifth over with Chahal taking a low catch in his followthrough. The Royals were 31/3 and they reached 70/3 at halfway mark with Robin Uthappa (17) and Lomror stitching a 39-run stand for the fourth wicket. But Uthappa failed again with Chahal getting him caught at long off. Chahal ended Lomror’s innings in the 17th over as the batsman sliced up a widish delivery to Devdutt Padikkal at long off. Rahul Tewatia (24 not out), looking for yet another explosive innings after the one against Kings XI Punjab, hit two sixes in the last over after enduring a beamer from Navdeep Saini on his chest.

IPL player reports corrupt approach, Hopeful of some sporting World Athletics award Heritage events by 2021: Rijiju Plaque to 6 historic road races ACU starts investigations

NEW DELHI, OCT 3 (PTI): A cricketer, competing in the Indian Premier League in the UAE, has “reported a corrupt approach”, putting BCCI’s anti-corruption unit (ACU) on a high alert. The 13th edition of the IPL in being held in the UAE in a bio-secure environment, which has significantly reduced the chance for persons with dubious credentials approaching the player directly. The threat though still remains by and large due to the online network of corruptors. BCCI ACU chief Ajit Singh confirmed the development to PTI. “Yes (a player has reported aproach),” Singh, the former DGP of Rajasthan Police confirmed the news. “We are tracking him. It will take some time,” he said when asked

if the alleged corruptor or “person of Interest” has been nabbed. As per anticorruption protocols, the name of the player (Indian or overseas) or franchise is not revealed for confidentiality purposes. With players and support staff staying in a biobubble, unlike other years, the ACU is concentrating more on the possible online corrupt approaches. Most of the players, especially the younger ones are mostly on social media platforms like instagram and twitter where unknown people masquerading as fans try to befriend them. A senior BCCI official said all the players whether overseas or Indian international, uncapped domestic players have all attended multiple anti-corruption classes. “The best part is that the player who was approached immediately

sensed that something is fishy. He had suspicion and he immediately shared his concerns with the ACU. Every player, even those who have come from the U-19s are well aware about each and every anti-corruption protocols,” the BCCI official, privy to the development, told PTI on the condition of anonymity. Due to health safety protocols this year, the ACU had organised its mandatory counselling sessions virtually for all the eight teams. Singh is leading a eight-man team in the UAE. The BCCI has tied up with UK-based company Sportradar, which will offer its “integrity services” to prevent betting and other corrupt practices during the upcoming IPL through its Fraud Detection Services (FDS).

New Delhi, Oct 3 (AGENCIES): Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju is hopeful that the country will be able to conduct sporting competitions by early next year. Sporting action in India was halted in March, when camps were shut down due to the COVID19 pandemic. In the past few months, the athletes have resumed training gradually. “Initially, I thought in the month of October some sporting activity could have taken place but it couldn’t happen because COVID cases are rising,” Rijiju said during SportCom’s Annual General Meeting on Saturday. “Though we have no sporting competitions now but as I see things emerging hopefully a vaccine will come out soon. Early next year we will have some kind of very fascinating

events back in the field,” he added. India has recorded over 64 lakh cases with more than one lakh people succumbing to the deadly virus. There have also been cases of elite athletes getting infected, including several hockey players, shuttlers N Sikki Reddy and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and wrestler Vinesh Phogat. The minister informed that he was constantly reviewing the progress of sportspersons who had begun training and added that training for junior athletes would begin soon. “Elite athletes are given proper training. I’m taking review of the progress on almost a daily basis. Barring a few disciplines all elite athletes are training and coaching is going on. And very soon we will start training for juniors also.”

Mane 2nd Liverpool player this week to contract virus

Dubai, Oct 2 (PTI): His side falling short yet again despite having him at the crease, MS Dhoni said he was trying to hit the ball too hard when timing the ball was a better option against Sunrisers Hyderabad in an IPL match on Friday. Chasing 166 to win, CSK lost by seven runs with skipper Dhoni staying unbeaten on 47 off 36 balls. He went after the bowlers too late. “I was not able to middle a lot of deliveries. Was trying to hit it too hard. When the wicket is slightly at the slower side, it is better to time it. Looking at outfield it was subconsciously coming to us to hit the ball hard,” Dhoni said after his side’s third defeat in four matches. Asked about his struggle towards the end as he seemed to have lost steam in searing heat, Dhoni said,” I tried to get as much as time as possible. It is quite dry out here. So, the throat gets dry and you start to cough. When you have legal signs, you can take some time off.” Dhoni made three changes to his playing XI but could not arrest the slide. He acknowl-

edged they need to find solutions. “Long time back once we lost three in a row. We need to get a lot of things right. It is the professionalism. We need to take our catches not bowl no-balls. Those are the controllables and may be we are getting too relaxed,” he said. “We have been a bit too relaxed at times. After the 16th over, we had two good overs but overall we could have been slightly better. “Nobody wants to drop catches but at the same at

this level, we need to draw a line and say these catches that need to be taken especially when the team hasn’t been doing that outstandingly well,” he said referring to spilled chances when SRH’s Abhishek Sharma was batting. “Catches that these can hamper your knock out stage games. It is very important to be at your best. There are plenty of positives in this game but we will try to come back strong.” SRH skipper David Warner took

a big gamble by asking 18year old Abdul Samad to bowl the final over when CSK needed 28 runs. The Australian defended his decision. “I backed him (Samad). I had no option. We tried to kill the game in the 19th over with Khaleel there with five balls to bowl. Could have given it to Abhishek, but Samad with his height and the way he bowled tonight, he had to bowl the last one,” said Warner.
