Rajnath Singh in the Lok Sabha Tuesday. (LSTV/PTI)

Won’t accept any move to change status quo: Rajnath NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (PTI): Firmly articulating the country’s position on the tense border row with China in eastern Ladakh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday said Beijing has been very clearly conveyed that any attempt to “unilaterally” change the status quo along the Line of Actual Control is not at all acceptable, and that India’s armed forces are ready to deal with “all contingencies” in the high-altitude region. Making a statement in Lok Sabha, Singh said he would not hesitate to

share that India is facing a “challenge” in Ladakh but at the same time added that the House should have “full confidence” that the armed forces will always rise to the challenge and make the country proud. Singh also referred to his talks with the Chinese defence minister on the sidelines of a multilateral meet in Moscow recently, and said it was made clear to him that though India wants to resolve the row peacefully, there should be no doubt about its determination to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The defence minister said amassing of the troops by China and violent conduct of Chinese military were in violation of all mutually agreed norms and pacts. The defence minister

said the Chinese side had taken action to “hinder” the normal, traditional patrolling pattern of Indian troops in the Galwan Valley area which resulted in the face-off. The defence minister said India made it clear to the Chinese side both through diplomatic and military channels that attempting to unilaterally alter the status quo was unacceptable. Cong MPs stage walkout: The Congress on Tuesday accused the government of shying away from debating the Ladakh standoff issue in Lok Sabha and questioned the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the House. Members of the Congress walked out of the Lok Sabha and staged a protest in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament House complex after they were not allowed to speak following a statement by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the border standoff with China in eastern Ladakh. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi alleged that after the defence minister’s statement, it is clear that the prime minister has “mis-

led” the country about the Chinese aggression at the border. Congress’ leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said leaders of the party wanted to speak in Lok Sabha in support of the armed forces and their bravery, but were not allowed to do so. Congress leader Chowdhury said the defence minister has been showering praises on Modi, but when a resolution is passed in Lok Sabha in support of the armed forces, at least the prime minister should have been present. Cong gives adjournment notice: Congress has given an adjournment notice motion in Parliament over a report in the media that said over 10,000 Indians including politicians were on the radar of China. Would be disastrous for any democracy to control the Press: SG NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (IANS): Solicitor General Tushar Mehta Tuesday told the Supreme Court that the freedom of the journalist is supreme and it would be disastrous for any democracy to control the press. Mehta made this argument during the hearing of a plea-- by a bench comprising Justices DY Chandrachud, Indu Malhotra and KM Joseph -against Sudarshan TV for its show ‘UPSC Jihad’, which focuses on how Muslims have “infiltrated” the Civil Service. During the hearing Justice Chandrachud queried Mehta, can this (citing TV show) be tolerated in a free society and perhaps whether self-regulation can be put forth? Justice Chandrachud queried, is this truly an exercise of Article 19 (1) (a). Mehta replied perhaps the court may not have had the chance to look at the rabid things being put out through various mediums. “But the question is, can it be regulated,” queried Mehta, citing if something nasty has been written about him, could anything be done about it.

ACAUT plea to Gov on illegal collections and syndicates

DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): ACAUT Nagaland has alleged that indirect illegal and unabated taxation were going on even as the district administration has turned a Nelson’s eye to the malpractice. This was contained in an open letter addressed to state Governor R.N.Ravi by ACAUT chairman Tia Longchar, co-chairman Simon Kelio and secretary Hetoi Chishi. In the letter, ACAUT said unscrupulous persons in transport unions were hand in glove with some members of various Naga political groups through their latest modus operandi in order to continue their hold on illegal and unabated taxation. ACAUT said it has been observing that orders and diktats were issued by these groups, to ensure that only certain selected transporters could carry particular goods and items at rates that were far above prescribed rates. ACAUT said those not complying with such impositions were harassed with summons and end up paying heavy fines. (Related story on p-5) ACAUT said due to

Another rock slide along NH 29 DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): Another rock slide occurred on Tuesday along National Highway 29 near Chümoukedima police check post resulting in damage of two dumper trucks, engaged in the 4-lane road construction work. When contacted, OC ZoneII, Peter Shuya said that the

incident took place around 4 p.m.. Two dumper trucks were damaged. However, no injuries or casualty were reported, Shuya said. The highway was blocked for a brief period, however, the area was cleared for single lane traffic.

such monopoly transport syndicates, business houses and shopkeepers were compelled to pay unjustified transportation charges. This has only resulted in upward spiral of prices of essential commodities causing tremendous suffering on the general public, said ACAUT. F u r t h e r, A C A U T said even after incoming transport carriers produced GST receipts, they were still subjected to illegal taxes. It termed as “shameful” that various unions and associations from Assam had even reprimanded and warned the Government of Nagaland to rein in illegal taxes being collected by its own law enforcing agencies including underground outfits at designated points and gates. ACAUT said it was one thing for the district administrations to issue orders for punitive action on overloaded goods vehicles, but another thing when it could not ensure security and rooting out the menace of illegal taxation on the highways. This contradiction was like placing the cart before the

horse, it added. Refer ring to the COVID cess on petrol and diesel, ACAUT said common people understood that they had to bear the burden for emergency expenses, but continuing with the cess in spite of receiving grants to the tune of hundreds of crore rupees from the Centre has left people fuming. ACAUT said as half of Nagaland’s population were below the poverty line, people were left with no option but to use public transport but the inflated fares burn their pockets every day. It also said the effect of the fuel cess was pushing up prices of essential commodities beyond control in interior and far-flung areas of the State. However, despite hike in prices fuel, sale of adulterated fuel and reports of fuel pilferage still persist, it added. ACAUT said the need of the hour was to revamp of the system of governance, especially with livelihood policy to generate entrepreneurial activities or else the state would be headed towards “social upheaval and unrest”. NSCN (K)’s ‘required quorum’ backs Isak Nyemlang contemplates DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): NSCN (K) members “representing the required quorum of the council of kilonsers, the military Wing and the entire functional regional authorities” except Konyak region have affirmed they

were “totally in support” of their general secretary and co-convenor NNPG/WC, “col.” (retd) Isak Sumi. In a joint statement, 34 signatories from civil and ‘military wing’ maintained that “the so called impeachment or expulsion drama” was extremely dictatorial and unilateral since the decision was taken without following protocol or serving show-cause notice. The signatories asserted that there was also no prior consultation or deliberation among the council of kilonsers, tatars (CCMs), the general party workers including the regional authorities and the military set-up as was the usual procedure as demanded of any such major issues. The signatories, therefore, said they considered the decision as “not only against the spirit of the Constitution (Yehzabo) but

also null and void.” As such, the signatories have appealed to the president Khango Konyak to revoke the “illegal and unconstitutional expulsion order so as to avoid any misunderstanding or disunity within the NSCN (K)”. They have also urged the president to convene a general party session to discuss and decide the issue. The signatories expressed “firm belief ” that such “unilateral decision would only cause irreparable rift and embarrassment before the entire world and the Nagas.” They said that it was “completely irrelevant and baseless” on the allegations of violation of Art.18 and Art.23 by the general secretary. Further, the signatories requested the president to honour the covenant between the Naga National

joining NSCN/GPRN (R)

DIMAPUR, SEP 15 (NPN): “Lt.gen” (retd) Nyemlang Konyak, chairman of the breakaway faction of NSCN (K), has expressed willingness to join the NSCN (Reformation) after “realising the mistake” of clinging on to the “orthodox ideology” of NSCN (K) for such a long time. In a statement, “lt.gen” (retd) Nyemlang Konyak said that “politically and militarily, I have been born in NSCN/GPRN under the leadership of late. Isaac Swu, Th. Muivah, late SS Khaplang and late Khole Konyak way back in 1982 and constantly worked for more than thirty years.” Konyak said his “first nightmare” was 1988 split of NSCN into two confronting forces, adding that even after the split he had been (Cont’d on p-7) through all the ups and

downs and thick and thin in NSCN setup. He said that confusion and distrust continued to reign the leaders often drawn the suspicious line between them leading to another split in 2011 further separating the leaders — late Khole and Kitovi on one side while late SS Khaplang on the other side—leaving him with the latter. Konyak said that the “unrest and inconsistent in the ranks and file continued to hunt the leaders pushing NSCN (K) to the verge of another confusion when late SS Khaplang unilaterally abrogated 14-year old ceasefire with Government of India and expelled Y Wangtin Naga, the then convener ceasefire group NSCN (K) for attending proposed ceasefire meeting as usual in March 2015 without any warning.” (Cont’d on p-7) K Y M C

Also, the notification was issued in violation of principles of natural justice and Article 21 of the Constitution of India as prohibition under the Act may be issued after a day’s notice to individuals or businessmen affected by such notification. According to the petition, no such notice was issued and livelihoods of citizens involved in dog business like commercial sale of dog meat in markets and restaurants and kitchens have been adversely affected. And when fundamental rights are an issue, the petition said such a move required a legislative backing, which was lacking in this case, adding the chief

secretary had issued the notification “by the shelter” of a cabinet decision. In response, the State government’s advocate V Zhimomi submitted that the ban was for marketing and selling of dog meat in the State and clarified that its consumption was not banned. Mentioning the matter was misplaced by the petitioner, he pointed out that the notification was issued by means of a cabinet decision by the chief secretary. After hearing both sides, Justice S Hukato Swu listed the case after two weeks for consideration of the interim prayer and for filing counter-affidavit. KMC acts to nab vendor selling dog meat:

Following a report by Nagaland Post about a local vendor selling dog meat at Old MLA junction here despite the State government’s ban on commercial import and trading of dogs, Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) authorities have failed to nab the vendor. KMC sources said a team from the municipal administration swung into action to nab the vendor as the person was liable to be punished under the Indian Penal Code and Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, but could not be traced. The sources added that the municipal administration was ensuring that the government order was strictly enforced.

(From p-1) Filed on September 2 calling for quashing of the notification, the petition pointed out that the government notification had several irregularities and hence could not face the test of law. Further, the PIL said the notification was issued by the chief secretary who has no authority under the Food Safety & Standards Act, adding that the authority of passing such orders was vested upon the commissioner of food safety. To facilitate the marketing of agricultural and farm products of the northeastern states outside the region, the AAI last month has launched the ‘KrishiUdan Scheme’. AAI’s immediate past Regional Executive Director Sanjeev Jindal said that it was one of his wishes that has come true after a dedicated domestic freighter started its services in the northeastern region. “Under the KrishiUdan Scheme, the services have been started in the region and it is aimed to benefit the local farmers and villagers whose products have a higher value outside the region. AAI’s aim is that they (farmers) should be paid as per the demand,” he said.

Shillong, Sept 15: Amid surge in COVID cases, Meghalaya’s Director of Health Services Dr. Aman War revealed that there is no virologist in the state after the State’s lone virologist Dr. (Mrs) Antinoris Jyrwa retired eight years ago as Director of Health Services (MI). Dr. Jyrwa stated that medical students from the State should further specialize in this field as it is more of a technical and very im-

portant subject dealing with clinical research or work with patients afflicted with viruses. Director Health Services (MI), Dr. Aman War however said that the department has no virologist due to absence of a fullfledged laboratory. “We don’t have a fullfledged lab to have virologists. Earlier, we had one virologist who has retired now,” War said. When asked if the state needs virologists, especially in this time of pandemic, the senior medical official said, “What we need

is to have dedicated health workers.” Virologists are medical doctors overseeing diagnosis, management and prevention of infection. They are also scientists who may drive research on various aspects of viruses. A virologist may be both a scientist and a physician. Dr. War also informed that a clinical management team has been formed, headed by Dr Andreas Dkhar, consultant general medicine of Shillong Civil Hospital in connection with the COVID-19 situation.

Correspondent IMPHAL, SEP 15: The crisis within the Manipur unit of National People’s Party (NPP), took a new tur n on Tuesday after Thangminlien Kipgen who claimed to have been reelected as president of the state unit accused its national president Conrad K Sangma of trying to “coup d’etat the party from the soil of Manipur.” NPP is of the major partners of the BJP-led coalition government. The crisis within the party surfaced after Sangma expelled Thangminlien for going against the party’s constitution. Sangma appointed N Kayisii, one of the 4 NPP minister in the ruling coalition, as interim president of the state unit of the party in Thangminlien Kipgen. In response to Sangma’s action, Kipgen expelled N Kayisii from primary membership of the party accusing him of indulging in anti-party activities. It may be mentioned that Sangma was on a twoday visit in the state on September 13 last and had re-affirmed the expulsion of Kipgen from the party for going against the party constitution. Reacting to Sangma’s statement, Kipgen alleged Conrad Sangma of trying to put his late father PA Sangma’s name as founder of the party. “Sangma is tr ying to coup d’etat National People’s Party from the soil of Manipur to put his late father PA Sangma

as the founder of NPP,” Kipgen accused Conrad Sangma. Recalling the birth of the party, he said that the NPP unit of Manipur was founded in the year 1989 with K Brajamani Dev Sharma as founder president, Thangkholet Kipgen as founder vice-president and L Shital as founder general secretary. Not only winning the elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly in 1990, 1995, 2007 and 2017, some MLAs of the party had even ministers. However, Election Commission of India (ECI) derecognised the party for not fulfilling the minimum requirement of being a political party in 2012, Kipgen added. It was after the party re-opened its account in the 2007 general elections to the Manipur Legislative Assembly by winning three out of five candidates fielded, that the ECI recognised NPP as a state party in Manipur on May 5, 2017. Kipgen said that late PA Sangma, who is said to be the founder of the National People’s Party, joined the party after the then NPP leaders accepted a request from the former Lok Sabha Speaker and NCP leader to join the party. Accordingly, all the NCP MLAs in Meghalaya and party organisation leaders and workers under his leadership merged into NPP in August, 2012 at Shillong, Meghalaya, Kipgen said in a press statement.

Later, PA Sangma led the party as national president from September 15, 2012 and expanded the party across the country. Under his PA Sangma’s dynamic leadership, the party opened its account by winning four seats in the Rajasthan Assembly in 2013 and two MLAs in Meghalaya Assembly in the same year, Kipgen said. On the latest amendment to the party constitution frequently referred to by Conrad Sangma, Kipgen alleged that there was no amendment in the party constitution. He said the draft amended constitution referred to was made available to either the NPP state unit office or ECI website till date, adding that quoting such articles from the amended constitution was not justified. There was no question of going against the party constitution after being re-elected as president of the party’s Manipur unit, he claimed, adding that presidential election of NPP Manipur state unit was held as per schedule under Article number 22 of the party constitution and after wide publication in leading local dailies on August 18, 2020 with intimation to the ECI. Kipgen said he was elected unopposed as president of the state unit of the party , while alleging that NPP national president Conrad K Sangma’s DO letter dated August 14, 2020 clearly showed his intention of a coup d’etat of NPP Manipur unit.

Y Patton calls on Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday. NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (NPN): Nagaland deputy chief minister, Y. Patton Tuesday called on Union Minister of State Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr Jitendra Singh and discussed a wide range of issues related to development projects and proposals submitted by the State Government. During the meeting, Dr. Singh pointed out to Patton that as a special consideration and priority, the Centre sanctioned the

second Government Medical College for Nagaland within a short span of three years. He said, it is an irony that for over 70 years after independence, Nagaland was possibly the only state in the country which did not have a single Medical College of its own, which led to inconvenience to the patients as well as aspiring Medicos who were constrained to travel outside the State. Dr. Singh further not-

ed that for a small State with a population of just about 20 Lakh, two centrally funded Medical Colleges are an indication of the priority that the Central government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi accords to the North Eastern Region and the peripheral far-flung States like Nagaland. Meanwhile, Patton also took up with the DoNER minister the state projects to be executed under North East Region

Development Scheme. He expressed keenness to expedite the road project of Chan Dang Sadle to Noklak which is about 31 Kilometre. Dr Jitendra Singh observed that all the schemes sanctioned by DoNER ministry and the North Eastern Council (NEC) were based on the priority cited by the respective State governments. He said, there has been a certain inevitable delay in some projects due to unfortunate COVID conditions, and added that DoNER ministry had been forthcoming in providing financial assistance to the North Eastern state governments in the very beginning of the COVID pandemic. Even now, he said the ministry was processing proposals from several States for funding of Infectious Disease Hospitals and healthcare for the future.

Rubbing salt to injury

D

elhi Police, which is under the union home ministry, has set its task of registering and prosecuting cases against all those involved with the February riots in North East Delhi. It may be recalled that visiting US president Donald Trump was in India from February 24 to February 25. Tension was already brewing especially over the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA) passed by parliament where various political and civil society organisations protested against the selective exclusion of Muslims. As per the CAA, citizenship can be granted only to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhits, Christians or Parsis who came to India due to religious persecution or fear of religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan after December 31,2014. The riots triggered by highly incendiary and communal statements by right wing politicians originated at Jaffrabad in north east Delhi where gangs of communal elements followed up after ultimatum issued by a BJP leader Kapil Mishra on Delhi Police to clear the women on sit-in demonstration against the CAA or else they would be forcibly evicted. The riots spread to various parts of north east Delhi where multiple waves of bloodshed, property destruction, and rioting took place, which went on for around six days. The riots left 53 dead, two thirds of who were Muslims. The dead also included a policeman, an intelligence officer and over a dozen Hindus, who were shot or assaulted. In the aftermath of the gory and violence, the Delhi Police was tasked with probing the riots, identify those responsible and filing FIRs. The role of the Delhi Police as probe agency does not inspire confidence. It may be also pointed out that the Delhi Police took no action even though they were present when the violence resulted in murders. A video shared on social media on February 26 showed a group of men being assaulted by the police as they lay on the ground, forcibly singing the national anthem of India and "Vande Mataram" on the demands of the policemen. The home ministry also refused to bring in the Army to control the riots and stated that the number of central forces and policemen on the ground was adequate. More than 6,000 police and paramilitary personnel were deployed in the area. The Police directed its probe overwhelmingly against the targeted community and not the perpetrators. Even the judge of the Delhi High Court, Justice S. Muralidhar, who had presided over the plea hearing, was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. This was the same day on which he had condemned the Delhi Police for its failure in controlling the riots or filing cases against BJP leaders- Kapil Mishra, Anurag Thakur and Parvesh Verma- for hate speech. Shockingly instead, Delhi Police have named CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Swaraj Abhiyan’s Yogendra Yadav, economist Jayati Ghosh, DU professor Apoorvanand and documentary filmmaker Rahul Roy in a supplementary chargesheet. It is indeed a gross travesty of justice and by doing the unthinkable-selective probe against those who spoke out against CAA while ignoring those who incited violence- the police have done not only injustice on themselves for toeing the line of their political masters. The Supreme Court should step in and ensure that no one is above the law so as to regain the image of the country in the eyes of the world.

DailyDevotion What To Renounce

We have renounced the hidden things of shame… —2 Corinthians 4:2 Have you “renounced the hidden things of shame” in your life— the things that your sense of honor or pride will not allow to come into the light? You can easily hide them. Is there a thought in your heart about anyone that you would not like to be brought into the light? Then renounce it as soon as it comes to mind— renounce everything in its entirety until there is no hidden dishonesty or craftiness about you at all. Envy, jealousy, and strife don’t necessarily arise from your old nature of sin, but from the flesh which was used for these kinds of things in the past (see Romans 6:19 and 1 Peter 4:1-3). You must maintain continual watchfulness so that nothing arises in your life that would cause you shame. “…not walking in craftiness…” (2 Corinthians 4:2). This means not resorting to something simply to make your own point. This is a terrible trap. You know that God will allow you to work in only one way— the way of truth. Then be careful never to catch people through the other way— the way of deceit. If you act deceitfully, God’s blight and ruin will be upon you. What may be craftiness for you, may not be for others— God has called you to a higher standard. Never dull your sense of being your utmost for His highest— your best for His glory. For you, doing certain things would mean craftiness coming into your life for a purpose other than what is the highest and best, and it would dull the motivation that God has given you. Many people have turned back because they are afraid to look at things from God’s perspective. The greatest spiritual crisis comes when a person has to move a little farther on in his faith than the beliefs he has already accepted.

Post-mortem

Second Medical College! Where is the first?

Nagaland still has no Medical College he delight and excitement over the news of establishment of a Second Medical College in Nagaland was seen across various social media platforms as well as in print media in the last few days. This exhilarating news was announced by our Honourable Minister of Health and Family Welfare stating that Nagaland has acquired approval for setting up of Second Medical College in Mon District, Nagaland. This was indeed welcomed and positive news. However amidst this pragmatic announcement majority of the people are left wondering, what exactly is happening on the status of the First Medical College which was sanctioned in the year 2014. There have been no coverage or update on the progress and development of the only and first Medical College in the state. Amidst this curiosity I was fortunate enough to get an opportunity to visit the site of the on-going Medical College and had an insightful discourse with the department in control of the on-going work. I would like to share some information and details I have gathered on the status of the First Medical College currently under construction at Phriebagei, Kohima. As we are all aware to a great extent that Nagaland today is the only Indian State that does not have a Medical College even after obtaining approval for one from the Central Government seven years ago. Our neighbouring states like

T

Mizoram and Manipur who have at least one or two Medical Colleges appear to be performing quite well in the Health Sector. Nagaland lies at the bottom of the list of worst performing States in the Health Sector. If we see the report of NITI Aayog for 2019, it clearly shows that Nagaland is at the bottom with the worst performing and the least improved States in the whole of India. This indicates that even after decades of programmes like National Health Mission and National Health Project, which aimed at uplifting and improving the Health Sector, Nagaland still shows no improvement. Of course, this does not mean that absence of a Medical College in the State alone is the reason for the Health Sector performing so poorly, but it does account to the deficient and negligible state of Medical Infrastructures in the State. The absence of acute and basic medical care and shortage of manpower which challenged us during this on-going pandemic is a staunch proof of our failing and almost collapsing Medical Infrastructures in the State. Approval from Central Government for setting Medical College in Nagaland (2014) It was during the XIIth Five Year Plan that the Government of India (GOI), with the vision of addressing the shortfall in Human Resources, implemented a Centrally Sponsored Scheme for the “establishment of new Medical Colleges by upgrading District/Referral

hospitals”. Nagaland got selected as one of the fifty-eight Districts in the 20 States/ UT identified and approved by the Government of India to convert District/Referral hospitals into Medical Colleges during the first phase of the XIIth Plan. Today, most of the Medical Colleges in these 58 approved are completed and functioning. Moreover, it is notable that one of the India’s Nor th-East States, Arunachal Pradesh completed construction of their Medical College in 2017 and commenced their academic session within one year. In Nagaland, the establishment of the Medical College in Kohima was approved by the Government of India on 19th February, 2014, by upgrading the existing District Hospital at Kohima. The total estimated cost for establishing one Medical College was 189 crore, on a funding pattern of 90:10 between the Central and the State. Nagaland received its full share of 170 crore Central Funds between 26th November, 2015 and 18th February, 2019 via three instalments. As per the guidelines for the establishment of a Medical College (under Establishment of Medical College Regulations, 1999 under Indian Medical Council Act, 1956) the Medical College should be within 10 km of the existing District/Referral hospital, where the District/ Referral hospital should have a minimum strength of 200 beds. The funding responsibility for infrastructure develop-

W

ment and the equipment required for upgrading the District/Referral hospital to a Medical College is shared between the Central and State/Union Territory Governments, whereas funding for land requirement, faculty, staff component and recurring expenses, which have not been included in the project cost, would be borne by the State/UT Government concerned. Due to non-availability of land at the existing Nagaland District Hospital, Kohima the Directorate of Health and Family Welfare on 12 February, 2014 along with the then Deputy Commissioner Kohima, proposed an area of 135 acres of land at Phriebagei, Kohima to set up the first-ever Medical College in the State. It was approved in principle on 30th April 2014 by State Level Acquisition Authority. However, it is said, that as per the agenda 24/3 of SLAA meeting dated 21 December, 2015 the purchased land was only 30-40 acres and not 135 acres. As a result of this and some other issues, even though approval for commencement of work had been given, the actual work for the construction of the Medical College only started in December, 2018. Hence, five precious years were wasted, a situation that could have been avoided if planning had been meticulously done. Another issue concerns the up-gradation of the District Hospital, which is taking place just above the Medical College site. It is disheartening to note that the up-gradation of the

District Hospital to 400 beds is still incomplete. With the amount of time given, the up-gradation of the District Hospital should have been completed long ago. However, till today it remains unfinished. The building has become distorted and shabby, and the walls are covered with multiple drawings and scribbles. One can visit the site to see how unfinished and disappointing it is. The citizens’ attitude towards public property is also at fault here, and this needs changing. As per interaction with the concern authority during field visit to the construction site dated 25th June, and 30th June 2020, the construction of work for seven buildings is currently in progress- the main Medical College building, Boys & Girls Hostel, 100 sqm apartments, 200 sqm apartments, MS residence, Dean Residence and Sports Complex. Six contractors have been assigned work for these seven buildings, and there are at least 7-10 technical specialists supervising each structure. Despite the number of appointed specialists and experts and almost one building per contractor, it is very disappointing to see that not even one building is 20% complete. The question that naturally arises is, when other neighbouring States with similar issues in respect to the geographical locations, disparities between transport and locations, climatic and atmospheric disturbances can still perform and complete the work within the stipulated time the question arises as

to why can’t our State. The responsibility of specialist and expert working on the ground is to take care of such issues and resolve it at the earliest in order to make sure such problems do not hamper and delay the work. Such an unprecedented slow pace is truly unjustifiable. The current work momentum in lieu with the global pandemic effecting labour force will further prove to be crippling for the entire chain of procurement, Ongoing construction workMedical College (30 June 2020) transportation and construction. This sadly will result in further delay and the reality of us seeing our Medical College functioning will not be anytime soon. Hence, the question arises which one will be the First and which will be the Second Medical College of Nagaland. There’s a lot of work ahead, but I put my faith in the concerned authority and the experts that, as per the timeline provided by them, the Kohima Medical College will be completed by 15 December, 2020. The last Ministers confidently promised to complete the Medical College and start the academic session by 2015-2016. We are now in 2020, and I surely hope that now without any further delay there will be real progress and our present Minister of Health & Family Welfare will be here to inaugurate the First and even the Second Medical College of Nagaland. The question of dignity and Naga independence

T

he promise and the likelihood of Nagas being granted political Independence from India has occupied prominence in the media and many serious conversations since as long as the mind can recall. It is ironical, if not more awkward, that India, the largest democracy in the world has had the audacity to keep the Nagas and their rightful privilege on tenterhooks for seventy-four years – the longest known struggle for independence by any nation. It puts India’s dignity under question. This article, however, is more concerned about the dignity of the Naga people as a nation. How do we Nagas fare as far as our dignity is concerned? How much of respect are we truly worth at this juncture? Virtues such as dignity, respect, and trust, as we know, are meant to be earned and not to be demanded. Just as love cannot be forcibly asked for, respect cannot be demanded. The higher ideals and qualities of life are earned, not claimed. At this point where much mystery and uncertainty shroud the Naga political landscape, what are we, ordinary Nagas, supposed to be thinking? If we are to be hopeful, what are we to be hopeful about? Does our hope for an independent Naga nation include dignity where we are confident that our children will now be able to comprehend true patriotism? Can we sit rest assured that peace and security will find their rightful place in our lives and our children’s from now on? The numerous talks and hopes of freedom all these long years have made conversations captivating, no doubt. And yet, as much as freedom is our right, it is also of paramount importance to ask the questions: freedom from what and towards what? Are our values and principles ready and intact to hedge us in and serve as the base for us to finally grow and thrive as a nation? Is there sufficient trust and respect to finally live peaceably under the same roof as one family? I often think back on some incidents that I encountered and which perpetually unsettle my sensibilities. Once in Dimapur town, I needed to meet the Proprietor of a business establishment. While I was told he was in his office, the wait became unending. On inquiry, I was told by his assistant that some “national workers” were with him, demanding that he give them the full amount of money they wanted,

which I was also told was a huge amount. He added that this was a routine thing. The assistant’s outburst made complete sense: “We work very hard. We sweat and we earn our keep. Who do they think they are to simply march in with some foreign made guns and pistols and threaten us to hand them our hard-earned money? Why should we give towards letting them build high fences for themselves and pack their kith and kin off to elite institutions and places while we toil in despair here? It is absolutely exasperating! But we have very little choice.” There are many similar accounts of industrious but tired citizens who just let things be, because they want to survive. Tolerance or submission is not equivalent to respect. In fact, it serves the opposite purpose of generating hatred and distrust. Such incidents make one think of what Edward Gibbon said about the Athenians: “In the end more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to exist.” Do we also see dark clouds gathering for our people as we throw caution to the wind?

Dignity, respect, responsibility, and accountability belong to the same club. If one is there, the other three show up automatically; when there is none, there is really nothing to expect. There is much that requires careful reflection, repentance, and remedy in the case of Naga independence. If threatening, shoving, throwing one’s weight around, and silencing those who stand in the way or speak a different language, are the bricks and blocks that are going to go into Naga nation-building, one dreads to think if the Naga story will be of one jumping from the oil pan into the fire. God forbid! Many sad and shameful stories have been spun in the course of the struggle for Independence by the Nagas. We have allowed ourselves to play right into the political games of some better seasoned, or perhaps shrewd, national leaders of India over this seemingly endless struggle. Ironical again, that we should be fighting for something that is our prerogative. And yet, when we seem to fall awfully short of commanding people’s respect, with no love lost among the multitudinous parties, factions, and organizations, we let our imprudence and vulnerabilities lie exposed. Army prepares for long winter in Ladakh

LEH, SEP 15 (PTI): From heating appliances and climate appropriate clothing to rations, fuel and tents that protect from the biting cold, all necessary supplies have reached the forward areas for the Army to gear up for the long, freezing winter in Ladakh region, officials asserted amid the tensions on the Line of Actual Control. The Ladakh region witnesses sub-zero temperatures and is mostly cut off from the rest of the country for months during the winters. As tensions between the armies of India and China at the LAC show no sign of ebbing, both sides have significantly ramped up the presence of their troops. Accordingly, India’s Army has been beefing up its stocks of food, ammunition, fuel and more importantly the winter gear. Major General Arvind Kapoor, Chief of Staff of the Fire and Fury Corps --- also known as the XIV Corps which has the mandate of securing the frontiers along the China and Pakistan borders from Kargil to Ladakh --- said the unit takes pride in its advance winter stocking. “Our stocking levels,

be it rations, fuel, oils and lubricants, tentage and heating appliances which includes bukhari (heaters) or kero-heaters, or be it ammunition, are in good numbers,” Kapoor told reporters here. “Wherever these things need to be supplied, they have already been supplied. We are confident that the system has become so well-oiled that in the

coming days, it will give an excellent result,” he said. Kapoor said the entire Ladakh region has been connected to two main highways -- the ManaliLeh axis and the JammuSrinagar-Leh axis. “These axes are shut for nearly six months. But in the last few months, we have brought this down to 120 days. In the coming days, the Atal Tunnel

will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Darcha-Nimu-Padam link is also ready and in the immediate future, the Ladakh region will get round-the-year connectivity,” he said. Fuel also plays a critical role for the armed forces, especially in the Ladakh region where it is used by soldiers in forward areas to keep themselves warm in

low temperatures. The corps also operates one of the highest altitude fuel, oil and lubricants depot. “We supply fuel both for our vehicles as also for our men, for the bukharis to keep them warm in the bitterly cold weather on the frontline,” said Brigadier Rakesh Manocha, incharge of the logistics. On tentage, officials said the indigenously developed Arctic tents can sustain temperatures up to minus 20 degrees, while the high-altitude tents have the capacity to sustain temperatures anywhere between minus 40 to minus 50 degrees. “Both tentages and adequate winter clothing have also been supplied to the forward areas,” an official said. The ration too has been stocked adequately, ranging from pre-cooked, packaged and canned items to food grains, they added. Brigadier A S Rathore said, “We hold complete requirements of supplies for all troops which are deployed in the Ladakh sector. All warehouses are completely full to the brim.”

Centre admits using GST to pay dues Drug case: CCB raids bungalow NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (AGENCIES): The Centre on Tuesday revealed that the GST compensation cess it had collected in the current financial year has already been partly utilised. While stating that the GST compensation cess collected in current financial year is insufficient to release to states the admissible GST compensation for the period April to July, Minister of State for Finance Anurag Thakur said in a written reply that some of this money has been “partly utilized” for compensating states for the previous financial year. The Centre stuck to its stand that states will have to choose one of the two options for receiving GST compensation and

revealed the entire opinion of the Attorney General of India in this regard, Thakur said while replying to a spate of questions including from Elamaram Kareem (CPI-M), V. Vijayasai Reddy and Kethi Reddy Suresh Reddy (both TRS). In written re plies, Thakur maintained that the future course of action to meet the GST compensation shortfall was discussed by the GST Council on August 27 where the states were given two options to meet their GST compensation shortfall for the current financial year from market borrowing. Thakur said five questions were put to the AG. On the question that in case the balance in the GST

Compensation Fund is not adequate to meet the compensation, the AG said states are entitled to receive the full amount of compensation during the “transition period”. But in case the balance in the Fund is insufficient, the AG said there is no express provision in the Compensation Act for the Centre to bear the liability of making good the shortfall. While the AG agreed that the GST Council can recommend extension of period for compensation, in reply to two questions he made it clear that the Centre will have the last word on any borrowing by the states.

BENGALURU, SEP 15 (PTI): The Central Crime Branch of Bengaluru, which is probing the drug abuse among bigwigs including Kannada film actors on Tuesday swooped down on the lavish bungalow of Aditya Alva, son of former minister and late Jeevaraj Alva in the city. Alva, who is an accused in the case, is at large ever since the CCB sleuths launched a crackdown against the drug haul in state capital, targeting those who arrange rave parties. Cases have been registered against 15 people so far in this connection and 9

arrested, police sources said. CCB said, “search warrant obtained and searches being conducted at Aditya Alva’s house near Hebbal called ‘House of Life’.” The police team stormed into his grand house with a swimming pool right next to the scenic and magnificent Hebbal lake and searched the premises. The bungalow is spread over four acres and is allegedly used by Alva to organise parties. Those arrested in the case include film actresses Ragini Dwivedi, Sanjjanaa Galrani, party organiser Viren Khanna, realtor Rahul and an RTO clerk B K Ravishankar.

SC stays telecast of Sudarshan TV show; says programme appears to vilify Muslims NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (PTI/AGENCIES): The Supreme Court Tuesday stayed the telecast of episodes of Sudarshan TV’s show ‘Bindas Bol’, saying at this stage, prima facie it does appear the programme “vilifies the Muslim community”. Terming it as a “rabid programme”, the court also restrained Sudarshan TV from telecasting the programme today and tomorrow while adjourning the matter to September 17. Hearing a plea raising grievance over the programme, a bench headed by Justice D Y Chandrachud said, “Look at this programme, how rabid is this programme that one community is entering into civil services.” “See how insinuating is the subject of this programme that Muslims have infiltrated the services and this puts the examinations of UPSC under scanner without any factual basis,” said the bench, also comprising Justices Indu Malhotra and K M Joseph. The court observed concern over the manner in which some media houses were conducting debate “as all kind of defamatory

things are being said”. “Such insidious charges also put a question mark on the UPSC exams. Aspersions have been cast on UPSC. Such allegations without any factual basis, how can this be allowed” Can such programs be allowed in a free society,” the bench said. T h e p r o g r a m m e, claimed by the channel in promos as a ‘big expose on conspiracy to infiltrate Muslims in government service’, has been a centre of controversy. On August 28, the top court had refused to impose a pre-broadcast ban on the programme. It had issued notice to the Centre, the Press Council of India, News Broadcasters Association and Sudarshan News on a plea filed by advocate Firoz Iqbal Khan who has raised grievance pertaining to the programme. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the top court that freedom of journalist is supreme and it would be “disastrous for any democracy to control the press”. Senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for Sudarshan TV, told the bench that the channel considered it as an investigative story on

national security. To this, the bench told Divan, “Your client is doing a disservice to the nation and is not accepting India is a melting point of diverse culture. Your client needs to exercise his freedom with caution.” It also said that there should be some kind of self-regulation in media and it would hear the solicitor general on this issue. “We are not saying states will impose any such guidelines as it would be an anathema to Article 19 of freedom of speech and expression,” the bench said. The apex court observed that revenue model of TV channels and their ownership patterns should be put in public domain on the website. “The point is this that the right of the media is on behalf of the citizens only and it’s not an exclusive right of the media,” the bench said. “Electronic media has become more powerful than print media and we have not been supportive of prebroadcast ban,” it added. The bench told Divan, “We expect some kind of restraint from your client (Sudarshan TV)”.

Lok Sabha passes bill to cut salaries of MPs by 30%

NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (PTI): Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill to reduce for one year the salaries of MPs by 30 per cent “to meet the exigencies” arising out of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2020 was introduced in the Lower House on Monday. It will replace the Salary, Allowances And Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020. The ordinance was cleared by the Cabinet on April 6 and promulgated the next day.

Replying to the debate on the bill, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said that funds are needed to fight the COVID19 pandemic and “charity should begin from home”. He also said that the economy was affected due to the lockdown, and in such a situation, the government has taken important decisions to deal with the crisis. Responding to the demand by opposition members to restore MP Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), he said: “Whatever decision we have taken on MPLADS is temporary and only for two years”.

Pakistan’s “provocative” act will not affect India’s participation in SCO and not cast any shadow on Patrushev’s warm personal relationship with the Indian NSA for whom he said he has the “highest regard”. Both India and Pakistan are members of the SCO, an influential regional grouping. The SCO, seen as a counterweight to NATO, has emerged as one of the largest trans-regional international organisations which accounts for almost 44 per cent of the world population stretching from the Arctic Ocean to the Indian Ocean and from the Pacific Ocean to the Baltic Sea.

ACAUT said the syndicates which have monopolised consumer items cause practical obstacles and are a big deterrent for any entrepreneur. Monopoly syndicates operated by such elements remove a competitive market and an open trade system for market dynamics to operate. In this regard, ACAUT expressed fear that Nagaland would soon be the only economically-backward State in the Northeast while the Act East policy was being implemented. “However, the central government was fully conscious of this, and took all necessary measures to ensure that during the period of the inevitable lockdown, no citizen should be deprived of basic amenities of food, drinking water, medical facilities etc,” the minister told Lok Sabha. According to him, the centre “allowed the state governments to use the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) on 28th March itself ” for providing temporary accommodation, food, clothing, medical care, etc., to homeless people as well as migrant workers. To augment the funds with the states, the Centre released an advance Rs.11, 092 crores from the state disaster funds to states on April 3, Mr Rai said. On migrant deaths, he replied that those details were “not centrally maintained”. Yesterday, on Day One of the first session held in the virus crisis, the government told Parliament it does not have data on migrants who died or were injured. NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (PTI): India on Tuesday walked out of a meeting of the national security advisors of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries in protest after the Pakistani representative used a “fictitious” map showing Indian territories as part of Pakistan. “This was in blatant disregard to the advisory by the host against it and in violation of the norms of the meeting. After consultation with the host, the Indian side left the meeting in protest at that juncture,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said. The virtual meeting was chaired by Russia. “As was to be expected, Pakistan then went on to present a misleading view of this meeting,” Srivastava said responding to a query on the issue. Government sources said the Pakistani action was “blatant violation” of the SCO charter and against all its established norms of safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of SCO member states.

NEW DELHI, SEP 15 (AGENCIES): The mass movement of migrants after the country went into lockdown in March to fight the coronavirus was because of “fake news”, the government said in Parliament Tuesday, delivering a new shocker a day after saying there was no data on migrant deaths, therefore “no question of ” compensation. The Home Ministry was responding to a written question by Trinamool Congress MP Mala Roy on steps taken to protect migrant labourers before the lockdown was announced on March 25, the reasons why thousands of labourers ended up walking home and the number of migrants labourers who died on their journey home. “The migration of large number of migrant workers was triggered by panic created by fake news regarding duration of lockdown, and people, especially migrant labourers, were worried about adequate supply of basic necessities like food, drinking water, health services and shelter,” replied Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai.

The White House will host a signing ceremony on Tuesday for Israel to establish diplomatic relationships with two important Islamic countries in the Middle East - the UAE and Bahrain, marking a notable diplomatic achievement for US President Donald Trump in an election year. Representatives from the UAE and Bahrain will sign the historic agreement with Israel in the presence of President Trump at the White House. President Trump helped broker a historic agreement between the UAE and Israel to normalise relations in August. Last week, Trump announced that Bahrain had also reached a deal with Israel to normalise relations. The event, the president says, would usher in a new era towards peace in the region. “So, the Emiratis and the Israelis will be signing their own document, as will the Bahrainis and the Israelis will be signing their own document. Then there’s also going to be, sort of, something that everybody is signing,” a senior administration official told reporters during a conference call on the eve of the historic agreements, in which President’s advisor and son-in-law Jarred Kushner has played a key role. Both the deals were announced by Trump himself after he hosted the phone calls with their respective leaders. According to the senior administration official, the UAE’s Crown Prince’s brother and foreign minister of the country is going to be in attendance. Bahrain would be represented by its foreign minister as well. The agreement has been dubbed as the “Abraham Accord.”

NSCN (K)’s ‘required... (From p-1) Po l i t i c a l G r o u p s (NNPGs) with regard to the anti-defection agreement signed and reaffirmed four times. The signatories said at this crucial juncture when a political solution was “finally being anticipated” “we cannot afford to create disharmony, antagonism and distrust amongst the NNPG/WC by inducting an outcast and a habitual defectors into high profile positions.” They said that such actions only demonstrated “arrogance and selfish interest” besides the common interest and goal of the Nagas. Appreciating the sacrifices made by “col.” (retd.) Isak Sumi, the signatories said he was “a true leader within the NSCN (K) government giving his all towards bringing about a lasting and honourable settlement to the Indo-Naga political conflict as CoConvenor of the NNPG.” They said that “popularly-elected” general secretary and co-convenor of the WC/NNPG was the “legitimate leader”. Stating that Isak enjoys the confidence and support of more than 80% of “our workers”, the signatories said that the status quo must therefore be maintained until such time the issue was amicably resolved with the popular/majority decision. Therefore, the signatories said that open threat/ intimidation to general secretary to vacate the CFSB office Dimapur was “totally unwarranted” and would only prove counterproducK Y M C

The signatories have, therefore, urged all not to vitiate the present atmosphere and refrain from making “provocative statements or any libellous comments” against each other but to focus on reconciling in the greater interest of the Naga political solution. P o rt l an d, S ep 1 5 (IANS): Oregon Governor Kate Brown said that she will veto several line-item appropriations in order to preserve funding for the state’s ongoing emergency wildfire response efforts and maintain a balanced budget. Combined, the vetoes will preserve over $65 million, reports Xinhua news agency. In order to expedite an immediate relief package by the Legislature’s Emergency Board, Brown on Monday night also requested that legislators reserve at least $150 million in the state’s emergency fund for upcoming requests relating to the raging wildfires. According to Brown, Oregon faces several unprecedented challenges simultaneously, such as the Covid-19 pandemic, structural racism, widespread unemployment, budget shortfall, and “now the worst wildfire season in our lifetimes”. So far, the wildfires have scorched over 1 million acres of land

across the state, killed 10 people, while 22 others were reported missing, according to the Oregon Office of Emergency Management. It added that firefighters in the state were struggling to contain more than 30 active wildfires currently. Besides Oregon, massive wildfires were also raging in California, Washington, Colorado, Idaho and Utah. Authorities in the worst-hit state of California, where 25 people have died since August 15, report that firefighters are working to contain 29 major wildfires across the state.

(From p-1) However, Konayk said he still remained with late SS Khaplang. After the demise of SS Khaplang, Konyak said vice-president “lt.gen” (redt) Khango Konyak replaced the former as president. However, within short period of time, Konyak said Khango was expelled by NSCN (K) rank and file. “All these actions are nonsense and shameful making the genuine Naga political movement a mockery,” “lt.gen.” (retd) Nyemlang Konyak said. He said NSCN (I-M) on its part was engaged in dialogue with government

of India for more than twenty years and “kept themselves warm and intact although no tangible agreement was arrived at.” Konyak said that beginning 2018, the conglomeration of six Naga political groups began fresh dialogue with the Government of India, but now it seven Naga national political groups (NNPGs) were involved in the dialogue. He said that both NSCN (I-M) and WC/ NNPGs have “reportedly” concluded major junk of crucial issues heading towards final solution.

Having realised the mistake of clinging on to the “orthodox ideology” of NSCN (K) for such a long time, Konyak said that he has “finally decided” to join the peace process for solution by choosing and joining any political group(s) engaged in talks. “This process of my thought pushing me to choose NSCN/GPRNReformation to be my ultimate platform,” he said. Therefore, Konayk said he has decided to begin contact with NSCN (R) top brass and shortly announce his joining once official contact was established.

Interestingly, Khalilzad did not meet Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan or Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and only had a meeting with the Pakistan Army Chief and Ambassador Sadiq. It is believed that the quick trip of Khalilzad to Pakistan is to seek Islamabad’s help to press the Taliban and compel them to announce a long-term ceasefire during the first round of talks in Doha. The Afghan government has been asking for a long-term ceasefire to the Taliban and has kept this point on top of its agenda during the ongoing talks in Doha. Abdullah Abdullah, head of the peace process and negotiating team from the Afghan government has even offered release of more prisoners and jailed fighters of the Taliban in exchange for a long-term ceasefire by the Taliban.

An intelligence source told Fox News that the intel community is taking the threat against the ambassador seriously and believe the Iranian regime potentially has the ability to act on an assassination plot. The death of Gen Soleimani, head of Iran’s elite Quds Force, in a US airstrike near Baghdad’s air port marks a major escalation in the standoff between Washington and Tehran, since US President Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal and imposed crippling sanctions. Iran had vowed to seek revenge for Gen Soleimani’s killing. “Any attack by Iran, in any form, against the United States will be met with an attack on Iran that will be 1,000 times greater in magnitude!” Trump said in a tweet after news reports emerged that Iran is planning some kind of attack

EPL: Clinical Chelsea sink Brighton 3-1 Lionel Messi tops wealth league

Players of Chelsea and Brighton vie for the ball during their English Premier League match.

Kepa Arrizabalaga. Brighton’s brave approach was rewarded in the 54th when Leandro equalised with a 20-metre strike which bounced in front of the often criticised Arrizabalaga, who should have done better, although the home side’s joy was short-lived. James restored Chelsea’s lead two minutes later with a goal any of the forwards would have been proud of as he teed himself up for an unstoppable shot which left Ryan clutching thin air. Br ig hton de fend er

Lewis Dunk missed a sitter soon after and the hosts were punished again in the 66th as Webster turned a tame Zouma effort past the stranded Ryan after James had swung in an inviting corner. Brighton right back Tariq Lamptey produced a superb individual performance as he gave fullback Marcos Alonso a roasting on his flank and Chelsea were forced to make several desperate clearances to keep the Seagulls at bay. Thomas & Uber Cup postponed

B RI G H TO N, S e p 1 5 (Agencies): Chelsea got their Premier League campaign on track after 20-yearold right back Reece James helped them to a 3-1 win at Brighton & Hove Albion with a spectacular goal on Monday. New signings Timo Werner and Kai Havertz made their debuts up front after the German internationals joined Frank Lampard’s side from the Bundesliga during the close season. But it was James who gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with a thunderbolt into the

top corner from 25 metres before a deflected shot by central defender Kurt Zouma sealed the points. Brighton had taken the game to Chelsea in the first half but fell behind after a defensive blunder in the 23rd minute when goalkeeper Mat Ryan fouled Werner in the area and Jorginho coolly converted the penalty. Werner latched on to a through ball by Jorginho after a sloppy pass by Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate, who nearly made amends in the 35th minute with a dipping low shot that was parried by Chelsea goalkeeper

Andy Murray

Paris, Sep 15 (IANS): Former world number one Andy Murray has received a wild card entry into the French Open which is slated to begin from September 27. Last month, Murray was also given a wild card for the US Open where he reached the second round in his first Grand Slam after hip surgery last year. He had registered 4-6, 4-6,

7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 come-from-behind victory against 49th-ranked Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka before losing to 15th seed Canadian Felix AugerAllassime. Along with Murray, seven other players have been given a free pass into the main draw of the clay Grand Slam. The 33-yearold last appeared at the Roland Garros three years

ago when he lost to Stan Wawrinka in a marathon five-set last-four encounter. In women’s singles, Eugenie Bouchard and Tsvetana Pironkova have also received wild cards into the main draw at Roland Garros. World No.1 and reigning champion Ashleigh Barty has already confirmed that she will not participate at the Grand Slam due to health concerns and a lack of preparation. The French Open was originally scheduled to start in May but had to be moved back because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the organizers have also announced that a total of 11,500 spectators per day will be allowed at the Grand Slam. Roland Garros will be divided into three zones based on the three main courts, with 5,000 people each for the Philippe Chatrier and Suzanne Lenglen courts. The zone surrounding the third biggest court will host a maximum of 1,500 spectators a day.

Kuala Lumpur, Sep 15 (IANS): The Badminton World Federation (BWF) on Tuesday announced that the Thomas and Uber Cup has been postponed following a series of withdrawals due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tournament, slated to be held in Denmark from October 3 to 11, was set to mark the resumption of international badminton after it came to a halt in March. “BWF, in collaboration with Badminton Denmark, has for many months been preparing for a safe return to international badminton,” BWF said in a statement. “However, in view of the recent Covid-19 related developments, a number of teams and individual players have elected not to travel to Denmark for tournaments in Aarhus and Odense; a choice the BWF has to respect and acknowledge,” it added. Countries that had withdrawn from the tournament included South Korea, Australia, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong.

IPL: RR not sure about Stokes’ availability

Dubai, Sep 15 (PTI): Rajasthan Royals head coach Andew McDonald says the franchise is “not sure” about the availability of star all-rounder Ben Stokes in the upcoming IPL as he is tending to his ailing father in New Zealand. Stokes is going through a tough phase. He pulled out of the threematch series against Pakistan in August before the second Test to be with his father, diagnosed with brain cancer. “First and foremost, thoughts with the Stokes family. It’s a difficult scenario, so we’re giving him as much time as he needs, and connecting with him as best we can,” said McDonald. “So yeah, we’re not sure where Stokes’ at right now, but once it has played out, then we can make our decisions from there. But I don’t want to second-guess what will happen with him just yet.” Since the first Test against Pakistan, the top all-rounder has not played

any cricket. Instead, he travelled to New Zealand, where his parents are settled. Stokes’ father Ged, a former New Zealand rugby league international, was admitted to hospital

in Johannesburg two days before Christmas last year with a serious illness. Asked about RR skipper Steve Smith, who missed two Australia ODIs with concussion in England, McDonald did not

seem too worried. “Steve Smith is a bit more clear-cut, I think. He needs a little bit of time, it was a short turnaround between game one and two where the concussion happened, so I’d imagine there were some lingering side effects.” “They’ll be erring on the side of caution, so hopefully (they will) see him out there again on Wednesday (for the third ODI against England in Manchester).” Appointed last year as the team’s head coach, McDonald is optimistically gearing up for his first IPL, the presence of a few promising players giving him reasons to hope. “We’ve added some depth in terms of our lefthand batting, in particular in (Anuj) Rawat and (Yashashvi) Jaiswal among the home-grown players, so we think we’ve got some options there.” “The way we set up at the auction, we feel we can structure our side up to three or four different ways.”

the ceremonies, the extent of the crowd participation, any necessary quarantine when they arrive in Japan. All of those things.” “And by the time we get to the end of the year we’ll make an assessment on what counter-measures we’ll need to apply.” The Japanese government and the IOC took the unprecedented decision

in March to postpone the Games, which were originally scheduled to begin in July. Tokyo officials have said they intend to put on the Games in 2021 even if the pandemic has not eased substantially. Australia’s retired five-time Olympic champion swimmer Ian Thorpe said he wanted to see the

Games go ahead but was doubtful they could without a vaccine. “First and foremost is people’s health,” Thorpe told reporters at the Sydney Games ceremony. “So let’s put that into perspective and if we haven’t got a treatment or a vaccine for COVID, the Olympics will possibly not go ahead.”

Dortmund beat Duisburg in German Cup

Dortmund players celebrate after scoring a goal against Duisburg.

Berlin, Sep 15 (IANS): Borussia Dortmund progressed into the second round of the German Cup after moving 5-0 past third division outfit Duisburg. The “BVB” smoothed the way for their win with three first-half goals, while Dominic Volkmer’s red card before half-time left Duisburg hopeless. The lower league side had the worst possible start on home soil as Maximilian Sauer’s handball allowed Jadon Sancho to break the deadlock from the spot with just 14 minutes played. Dortmund gained mo-

mentum and pinned Duisburg in their territory before Thorgan Hazard’s back-heel pass found youngster Jude Bellingham, who made no mistake to make it 2-0 from inside the box in the 30th minute. Eight minutes later, things went from bad to worse for Duisburg as Volkmer felled Erling Haaland as the last man to receive his marching orders. Haaland remained center stage as he drilled the subsequent free-kick from the edge of the box into the top-left corner to make it 3-0. Duisburg tried to keep

pace but the “BVB” continued their relentless march, as Giovanni Reyna’s deflected free-kick left goalkeeper Leo Weinkauf helpless five minutes into the second half. Lucien Favre then brought on Marco Reus for his return after a long injury lay-off, and the German international paid back his trust seconds later, beating Weinkauf following a freekick at the hour mark. Dortmund remained in full control of proceedings and should have added a sixth goal, but Julian Brandt lacked accuracy in the closing period.
