DIMAPUR, SEP 26 (NPN): Drawing attention of the news item published in the local dailies as reported by IANS, Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in a press note clarified that the concluding paragraphs in the report, “though not attributed to him (chief minister T.R. Zeliang), could be construed otherwise by politically motivated interests”. In this regard, CMO has made it clear that Zeliang “has never mentioned anything about the number of rounds of talks held between negotiating parties, or the number of casualties since 1947, or the scaling down or up of the demand of the NSCN (I-M)”. Sources also informed that the contractor would engage class-I contractors and other experts to train the youths in various districts. The contractor has reportedly assured the department to procure mobile van to help youths get trained on construction in all the district headquarters. Also, out of Rs 1.5 crore, the department was contemplating sanctioning Rs. 20-30 lakh to an NGO, YouthNet, to carry out wide publicity of the project and also to monitor and assist the depart-

ment for successful implementation of the project. Asked whether there was open tender for the contract or for the publicity activities, sources replied in the negative. Rs. 20-30 lakh has been set aside for the departmental expenses, they added. For the project, the sources said a High Power State Level Steering Committee (HPSLSC) was constituted headed by parliamentary secretary of labour employment, skill development and entrepreneurship as chairman. For the skill development project, the department plans to cover all the 74 identified blocks under state government, wherein the department would appoint aspiration mapping officer (AMO) to take real survey, to identify the job seekers and the potential of that particular area. They said the role of the AMOs would be to interview the job seekers through VDBs and churches. Sources also said the appointment would be made purely on contract basis for not more than three months on a fixed pay of Rs. 10-15,000. For this, they said aspiring candidates, preferable male local from that particular block, would be appointed, adding the department would float advertisement in local dallies. No helmet, no fuel: Manipur transport warned petrol pumps Correspondent IMPHAL, Sep 26: Under the government’s ‘no helmet, no fuel’ rule, petrol pumps were strictly advised to not give fuel to drivers without helmets. Cracking the whip on those who do not obey the rule to wear helmets while riding two-wheelers, Manipur government on August 16 last announced introduction of ‘no helmet, no fuel’ rule in the state with effect from September 1, 2016. Under the r ule, twowheeler riders will not get petrol at pumps if the rider and pillion are found to be sans helmets. The government’s decision has, however, not found any support as petrol dealers continued to give fuel to bikers without helmets and bikers don’t care of the new rule. State transport commissioner M Lakshmi Kumar, in an interview with a local cable network Monday warned the petrol pumps that permits will be cancelled in case they were found giving fuel to drivers without helmets. The commissioner said that state transport department has issued a notice on August

16, 2016 stating that ‘no helmet no petrol’ system would be introduced in Manipur with effect from September 1, 2016. The decision to implement the rule was taken after consultation with all concerned departments of the state government. Since the issue of the notification, traffic control police assisted by civil police have been conducting drive against two-wheeler riders with no helmets. Till September 22 last, 1,548 cases were registered for traffic offence and collected Rs 3.98 lakh as fine from the offenders. The state transport department has taken up to introduce the stringent measure to check deaths resulting out of road accident by ensuring two-wheeler riders wearing helmet. The commissioner said “Road safety is the cornerstone of transport department and every effort is made to make the roads in the state more safe so that there is substantial reduction in deaths resulting out of road accident.” Towards this end, to amend the Motor Vehicles Act by the Centre to enhance the penalties for traffic rules violation was under consideration.

UDWJA said its office was in no uncertain term, deemed the very improper demeanour of AC Johnson as a deliberate affront to collective press fraternity. Earlier, UDWJA in its emergency meeting dated April 30, had unanimously resolved to preliminarily bring the matter to the notice to the Khangkhui Khunou/Phungthar Village Authority so as to settle the same amicably within May 10, in the interest of maintaining cordial relationship in future. But on the contrary, AC Johnson had remained obstinate and keeps warning the journalists of ill consequences, let alone resolving the matter.

and flow of traffic there. The preventive measure was to ensure peaceful movement of public, traffic and also the normal functioning of offices in these areas in apprehension that such elements will carry out agitation/ demonstration/shouting of slogans in front of the DC office, Meghdoot Bhawan and in and around Dighalipukhuripar area under Panbazar police station, he said. The order, issued two days ago and released to media today, was put into force with immediate effect and will remain operational till further orders.

India puts SCATSAT-1, seven others into orbit

Sriharikota (Andhra Pradesh), Sep 26 (pti/ IANS): In its longest-ever flight, the PSLV C-35, carrying India’s SCATSAT-1 meant for ocean and weather studies and seven other satellites including from the US and Canada, Monday lifted off from the spaceport, here. The launch marked PSLV’s longest mission spread over two hours and it is the first time that the rocket is putting its payloads in two different orbits. The 44.4 metre tall PSLV rocket blasted off at 9.12 AM and 17 minutes later injected SCATSAT-1 in orbit. “SCATSAT-1 has been successfully injected in orbit,” ISRO said. The 371 kg SCATSAT, the primary satellite meant for weather forecasting, cyclone detection and tracking, was first

injected in a Polar Sunsynchronous Orbit (SSO) orbit while the seven others will be injected in a lower orbit after over two hours, the first time the rocket is putting its payloads in two different orbits. The total weight of all the eight satellites onboard is about 675 kg. Besides SCATSAT-1, the PSLV rocket is carrying two Indian university satellites, three from Algeria and one each from the US and Canada. SCATSAT-1 is a “continuity” mission for the Ku-band scatterometer payload carried by SCATSAT-1, which has enhanced features compared to a similar one carried by Oceansat-2 satellite in 2009. The two academic satellites are PRATHAM, from IIT, Bombay, and PISAT, from BES University, Bengaluru and its consortium. While

SC notice to Centre, others on PIL for guidelines on raids

New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI): Supreme Court Monday sought responses from the Centre and probe agencies including CBI and ED on a PIL seeking framing of guidelines to safeguard rights of common public against alleged misuse of investigating powers during search and seizure. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi and P C Pant issued notice to the Centre on the plea filed by scribe Upendra Rai, contending that probe agencies were allegedly “harassing and humiliating citizens while conducting searches at their residential premises” and the procedures need to be regulated. Besides issuing notices to various Ministries including Home Affairs, Law and Justice and Finance, the court also sought responses from Law Commission of India, CBI, CVC, Department of Revenue, DRI and Enforcement Directorate. “Issue a direction under Article 32 of the Constitution in the form of adequate guidelines regulating procedure of search and seizure at the residential premises/dwelling units by all the investigating agencies in India,” the plea said and sought protection of

fundamental rights of citizens including protection of life and personal liberty. “Issue appropriate guidelines/measures to protect the Fundamental Rights under Article 19(1)(a), 19(1)(d) and 21 of the Constitution, of the citizens against harassment and humiliation being caused to them by Investigating Agencies while conducting search at their residential premises,” the PIL, filed through advocate Keshav Mohan, had said. The plea cites examples of recent searches conducted at the residences of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and Director General of Corporate Affairs B K Bansal, whose wife and daughter allegedly committed suicide here. The plea also referred to a suicide note written by the mother-daughter duo that they took the extreme step due to the humiliation caused by CBI officials during the search operations at Bansal’s residence. His son too has been missing since the first CBI raid. Referring to the Bansal case, the petition had said his wife and daughter committed suicide due to the humiliation caused to them by CBI officials during the search operations.

PRATHAM’s objective is to estimate Total Electron Count, PISAT’s mission is to design and develop a nanosatellite for remote sensing applications. The foreign satellites onboard the PSLV are ALSAT-1B, ALSAT-2B and ALSAT-1N (all from Algeria) and Pathfinder-1 and NLS-19, from USA and Canada, respectively. The total weight of all the eight satellites onboard PSLV C35 is about 675 kg, ISRO said. SCATSAT-1 weighs 371 kg. While SCATSAT-1 will be released first into a 730 km Polar Sunsynchronous Orbit (SSO) after about 17 minutes, the rest will be injected into a lower orbit of 689 km after around two hours. On Sunday, Sivan told IANS that the long time gap between the cutting off of the engine and its restart was not an issue. The director said the first time the multiple burn technology was first tested by ISRO while flying its PSLV rocket on December 16, 2015 and in June 2016, the technology was again demonstrated. About the challenge, Sivan said: “After cutting off the engine, its condition should be brought to such a stage that it could be restarted again. The next challenge is to controlling the engine and bringing it so as to eject the remaining satellites into a different orbit.” He said the rocket has GPS aided navigation system so that data generated by the rocket’s inertial navigation system and the one provided by the former will be blended so as to erase and errors and to generate a precise data.

Shoe thrown at Rahul in UP, assailant arrested Sitapur (Uttar Pradesh), Sep 26 (IANS): A shoe was thrown at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday during his ongoing ‘Kisan Yatra’ in Sitapur of Uttar Pradesh, police said. A youth has been arrested in this connection and taken to the Kotwali police station for interrogation. The shoe missed the Gandhi scion by a whisker and he looked back at the shoe as it zipped past him. The assailant has been identified as Hari Om Mishra, resident of Hargaon, a police official told IANS. Congress leader Jitin Prasada was with Gandhi at the time of the attack. Special Protection Group (SPG) men swung into action and surrounded the Congress leader after the shoe attack. Mishra told policemen that he was angry at the promises being made by Rahul Gandhi during his road shows as he believed the Congress was behind the problems faced by farmers. Gandhi started his ‘Kisan Yatra’ on Monday after a two-day break.

national Develop costeffective test kits for diseases: PM New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday asked the scientific community to develop costeffective medical kits to diagnose vector-borne diseases like dengue, chikungunya and malaria. His comments come in the backdrop of several cities and metropolises grappling with vector-borne diseases. Delhi alone has reported 40 deaths due to such diseases this season-- 15 due to chikungunya, 19 dengue and 6 malaria. Addressing scientists here on the occasion of Platinum Jubilee celebration of CSIR, Modi said, “CSIR has done a lot of good things in the health sector. But people of our country have to counter diseases like tuberculosis, dengue, malaria and chikungunya. How can CSIR help in providing relief from such diseases?” Founded in 1942, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is an arm of the Ministry of Science and Technology, under which 38 state-of-art institutes carry out research on varied subjects-form aerospace to agriculture to medical sciences and genome. “It is necessary to conduct time-bound research in these areas. Can we develop test kits which can help diagnose the diseases. The medical science has become technology-driven and there is an opportunity here,” Modi said, asking if these issues could be addressed on a mass scale. The Prime Minister said that more than doctors, “it is the machines that diagnose the illness. The machine determines what is wrong in the body”.

Blood and water cannot flow together, says PM Modi New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI): “Blood and water cannot flow together,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Monday as he chaired a review meeting of 56-year-old Indus Water Treaty during which it was decided that India will “exploit to the maximum” the water of Pakistan-controlled rivers, including Jhelum, as per the water sharing pact. Held amidst heightened tension between the India and Pakistan, the meeting also decided to set up a inter- ministerial task forces to go into the details and working of the Treaty with a “sense of urgency”, senior government sources said. Attended by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar, the Water Resources Secretary, and senior PMO officials, the meeting also noted that the meeting of Indus Water Commission can “only take place in atmosphere free of terror”. The Commission has held 112 meetings so far. “Prime Minister’s Modi’s message at the meeting was that ‘rakt aur paani ek saath nahin beh sakta’ (blood and water cannot flow together),” sources said. Apart from deciding to exploit to the maximum the capacity of three of the rivers that are under Pakistan’s control - Indus, Chenab and Jhelum-- in the areas of hydro power, irrigation and storage, the meeting also agreed to review the “unilateral suspension” of 1987 Tulbul navigation project. The project was suspended in 2007. The sources asserted that the decision to maximise the water resources for irrigation will address the “pre-existing” sentiment of people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have com-

7 scenarios Pak will face directly if India scraps Indus Waters Treaty The Modi government’s review meeting of Indus Waters Treaty on Monday rose speculation that New Delhi may be considering to close the ‘water tap’ to Pakistan in response to Uri attack. In such an eventuality, here are the seven scenarios Pakistan could face almost immediately. 1/ Scrapping of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) will inflict deeper wounds on Pakistan, and perhaps more than the one fought with weapons. The immediate consequence of which could be chaos and unrest in the society. 2/ The Indus treaty gives Pakistan the right to use waters of three rivers - Indus, Chenab and Jhelum — the lifeline of the country’s Indus region. The abrogation of the treaty will create water scarcity, drought and misery. 3/ The region supports 90 percent of the country’s agriculture, the backbone of the country’s economy and its 195 million people.

Water scarcity will hit agri sector, resulting in famine-like situation. 4/ The agri sector also contributes over 19 percent to the country’s GDP and largest employer (over 42 percent) of the country’s total labour force. The impact of which will also be felt in this sector. Unemployment rate will rise. 5/ Pakistan uses Indus water for irrigation, power generation and drinking. Most importantly, the Indus region plays a crucial role in the country’s Hydro-power generation. Water scarcity will hit industrial production. 6/ The agri sector provides raw materials to industries and helps in poverty alleviation. Already, some 60 million Pakistanis live under the poverty line. Such a move would again impact the overall economy of Pakistan. 7/ Finally, the closing the Indus water tap could unseat the government of Nawaz Sharif as a result of the effects of famine, agrarian and economic crisis.

Delhi govt’s job to ensure city Sena doubts India getting global support over Uri is disease free: Centre to SC New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI): The Centre Monday told the Supreme Court that it was the duty of Delhi government to ensure that the national capital remained clean and free from diseases like chikungunya and dengue. The apex court sought response from Delhi government on a suo motu plea relating to the death of a 7-year-old boy in Delhi due to dengue after allegedly being denied treatment by five private hospitals and subsequent suicide by his parents. Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi, who was present in the courtroom for another matter, told a bench comprising Justices M B Lokur and D Y Chandrachud that if the AAP-government does not take the responsiblity to maintain hygeine in the city, then the Centre may step in to deal with the issue. The court had last year taken suo motu notice of the matter after a couple -- Laxmichandra and Babita Rout, both natives of Odisha, committed suicide by jumping from a four- storeyed building in South Delhi’s Lado Sarai after their only son Avinash died of suspected dengue.

Five hospitals including Max hospital in Saket, Moolchand Khairatiram Hospital in Lajpat Nagar, Aakash Hospital in Malviya Nagar, Saket City Hospital and Irene Hospital, Kalkaji were issued show cause notices to explain why their registration should not be cancelled for allegedly refusing to admit the boy.

Mumbai, Sep 26 (PTI): Taking a sceptical view of India’s diplomatic moves in the aftermath of Uri attack, Shiv Sena today said it feared that India had actually been isolated in the world with its efforts yielding little result other than mere “lip service” by global leaders. In a veiled dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ruling ally also said Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is now showing off a “56-inch chest.”

“All of India’s efforts to forge global relations have proved futile as no country actually backed India over the Uri attacks. Global leaders did mere lip service of condemning the terror attacks but the BJP’s social media cell took some other meaning out

of it and went boasting how Pakistan has been isolated over the issue,” an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said. It noted that neither Russia did stop its joint military drill with Pakistan nor China condemned the terror attacks.

An expensive dream project

I

t was good news that Kohima has at last, managed to qualify for implementation of the Smart City Mission in its third attempt and the challenges that lie ahead would indeed be daunting. The ‘Smart City’ seeks to provide for the aspirations and needs of the citizens, urban planners ideally aim at developing the entire urban ecosystem, which is represented by the four pillars of comprehensive development — institutional, physical, social and economic infrastructure. The project envisages a city to be equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions. The idea of smart city came into formulation owing to the need to accommodate rapid urbanization of the age. Interest in smart cities continues to grow, driven by a range of socioeconomic and technological developments across the globe. In broad sense, a smart city will offer people a better quality of life. Apart from world class infrastructure, public transport, healthcare services, education system, Wi-Fi connectivity in these cities will match with the best in the world. The Government is not prescribing any particular model to be adopted by the Smart Cities. The approach is not ‘one-size-fits-all’; each city has to formulate its own concept, vision, mission and plan (proposal) for a Smart City that is appropriate to its local context, resources and levels of ambition. Accordingly, the state governments have to choose their model of Smart City and to clearly define what kind of Smart City they want ? For this, cities will prepare their Smart City Proposal (SCP) containing the vision, plan for mobilisation of resources and intended outcomes in terms of infrastructure up-gradation and smart applications. One of the prime reasons why the smart city project is crucial for India is because the country’s urban population is set to rise by more than 400 million to 814 million by 2050. The cost of funding the project is to be borne equally by the centre and the state governments. Kohima will receive Rs.200 crore for the first financial year and subsequently, Rs.100 crore in each of the four remaining financial years. That means, Kohima stand to get Rs.600 crore for five years for creating all the necessary infrastructures for development as a smart city. A great responsibility rests on state governments to make it work. After all, it is the states that will have to ensure that persons with vision are deputed and money is not misused or diverted. The creation of smart city for Kohima will give a boost to its economic activity through construction of infrastructure, housing, sale of electronic items and opening a wide opportunity for talented youths involved in labour intensive activities. The municipal councils in Nagaland are still dependent upon the government for meeting their financial obligations. The smart cities are supposed to be self-sustainable. Now that Kohima has been included in the list for Smart City Mission, the state government will have to provide its share of equal fund for the project and which may mean half of Rs.200 for the first year and subsequently half of Rs.100 crore for the next four years. This is the norm but it is not known if the state government has managed to obtain consideration since it is faced with severe deficit.

DailyDevotion The “Go” of Reconciliation If you…remember that your brother has something against you… —Matthew 5:23 This verse says, “If you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you….” It is not saying, “If you search and find something because of your unbalanced sensitivity,” but, “If you…remember….” In other words, if something is brought to your conscious mind by the Spirit of God— “First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift” (Matthew 5:24). Never object to the intense sensitivity of the Spirit of God in you when He is instructing you down to the smallest detail. “First be reconciled to your brother….” Our Lord’s directive is simple— “First be reconciled….” He says, in effect, “Go back the way you came— the way indicated to you by the conviction given to you at the altar; have an attitude in your mind and soul toward the person who has something against you that makes reconciliation as natural as breathing.” Jesus does not mention the other person— He says for you to go. It is not a matter of your rights. The true mark of the saint is that he can waive his own rights and obey the Lord Jesus. “…and then come and offer your gift.” The process of reconciliation is clearly marked. First we have the heroic spirit of self-sacrifice, then the sudden restraint by the sensitivity of the Holy Spirit, and then we are stopped at the point of our conviction. This is followed by obedience to the Word of God, which builds an attitude or state of mind that places no blame on the one with whom you have been in the wrong. And finally there is the glad, simple, unhindered offering of your gift to God.

any years ago the c h i c k e n i n d u s t r y, faced with a backlash against all meats, hired an advertising agency. They came up with the word “white” meat. For years the industry has been attributing all sorts of benefits to chicken “white meat” – none of which are true. White is the same as red in every way – whether in cholesterol, oil or anything else that people want to avoid. But no matter what the scientists and food experts say, people will now continue to regard chicken as “aspirational” and good for their health. The same goes for fish oil. Fish oil is now the third most widely used dietary supplement, after vitamins and minerals. People have been told repeatedly by the advertisements, and by doctors paid by the industry, that fish oil has Omega 3 in it and these fatty acids will protect their hearts. Fish oil has also been sold as preventing heart disease or stroke, as well as for clogged arteries, chest pain, irregular heartbeat, bypass surgery, heart failure, rapid heartbeat, preventing blood clots, and high blood pressure after a heart transplant. The problem is that most of the clinical trials, involving fish oil, have found no evidence of any of this. From 2005 to 2012, at least two dozen rigorous studies of fish oil were published in leading medical journals, most of which looked at whether fish oil could pre-

vent heart disease, attacks or strokes in high-risk populations (obese, low exercise, meat eating, smokers, history of heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension or Type 2 diabetes). Twenty of these studies found that fish oil had NO benefits at all. In theory, fish oil supplements are rich in two omega-3 fatty acids — eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) — that could have a blood-thinning effect, much like aspirin, that could reduce the possibility of clots. Omega-3s can, in laboratory findings, also reduce inflammation, which plays a role in atherosclerosis. Supposedly they increase blood flow, reduce blood pressure and give neurons structural strength. Unfortunately these properties of omega-3 fatty acids don’t translate into any benefits in the human body. This is what all large clinical trials, involving thousands of people, have proven. A review in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association), involving almost 70,000 people, found no compelling evidence linking fish oil supplements to a lower risk of heart attack, stroke or early death. So where did this mythology, that has made so many companies rich and wasted so much consumer money, come from? Research was carried out in the 1970s by Danish scientists Dr. Hans Olaf Bang and Dr. Jorn Dyerberg, who decided that Inuits living in

Nagaland Post, Dimapur tuesday, September 27, 2016

Possibilities of heart attacks Greenland had low rates of cardiovascular disease and they attributed to an omega3-rich diet consisting of fish, seal and whale blubber. This research was disproved by Dr. George Fodor, a cardiologist at the University of Ottawa, who showed that Inuits had as much heart disease as any high risk population. But by then the fish oil industry was up and running! In the 1990s an Italian study, which showed that fish oil was better than Vitamin E, was also exaggerated to bolster this theory. It prompted the American Heart Association to endorse fish oil as a way for heart patients to get more omega-3s in their diets. And so the sales shot through the roof all over the world, as heart patients sought the easy way – not to exercise and not to stop eating / drinking / smoking, but to take supplements of fish oil and lie back. According to Prof. Andrew Grey and Dr. Mark Bolland, at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the authors of a 2014 study on

fish oil, “The sales are going up despite the progressive accumulation of trials that show no effect.” Over the years similar findings have been published in the top-ranking internal medicine journals (New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, PLoS Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, British Medical Journal, and Annals of Internal Medicine). If nothing else, doctors who read these journals should have stopped recommending fish oil. But sales in America alone went up from $425 million in 2007 to $1,043 million in 2012. The same sort of increase was found in the UK and Australasia (which includes us!) 10% Americans now take a daily pill of fish oil; Some because of the advice of doctors, others because of its ready availability, anecdotal evidence, supportive one sided “news” reports and selective presentations by the fish oil industry. A clinical trial of 12,000 people, done by Dr. Gianni Tognoni of the Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, published in The New

England Journal of Medicine in 2013, found that fish oil did not reduce the rate of death from heart attacks and strokes in people with evidence of atherosclerosis. “In fact, there has been a spate of studies showing no benefit,” said Dr. James Stein, the director of Preventive Cardiology at University of Wisconsin Hospital. In contrast, doctors warn that fish oil can be dangerous when combined with aspirin or other blood thinners. It can lead to bruises and nose bleeds. Preston Mason of the Harvard Medical School talks about the danger of fish oil in a widely watched documentary made for FRONTLINE, Supplements and Safety. It comes down to oxygen, says Mason. Fish oil is extracted as a by-product from oily fish like anchovies. As the fish are crushed, they’re exposed to air, meaning the oil becomes oxidized. Oxidized fish oil contains oxidized lipids, which can trigger changes inside human cells that lead to health problems like cardiovascular disease. Prescription-grade fish oil needs to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration, notes Mason, and because the approval process comes with stringent production standards, the risk of oxidation runs low. However, in Mason’s work and in other previously published studies, researchers have found that the type of fish oil that’s sold in stores often has high levels of oxidation. In the early 2000s the fish

oil market began to soar because of the favourable recommendations of the influential American Heart Association. When the association was asked for an expert to explain the recommendation, former AHA president Robert Eckel, said that the recommendation needs to be revised. “It would be a good time for that to be updated,” Eckel said. “Almost all studies of fish oil supplements show no benefit. I really feel this remains unproven.” In the 1990s, a study came out in Wales linking fish oil intake with a longer life. In 2003, some of the researchers, who conducted the early and influential study, published the results of a follow-up. Of 3,000 Welsh men with angina — a chest pain caused by coronary heart disease — some were advised to eat oily fish or take fish oil supplements. This time they found that the fish group patients were more likely to die, and the researchers said it was particularly worse for those taking the fish oil pills. “The excess risk [of cardiac death] was largely located among the subgroup given fish oil capsules,” they reported. So, while fish oil will not help remove your possibilities of heart attack, it may actually propel you towards one! Sometimes I wonder why I should write these articles. India is quietly shining a light on the refugee crisis

arlier this summer, around mid-July, India introduced a bill to its 1955 Citizenship Act. The bill, if passed, will not only prioritize foreign ethnic and religious minorities for citizenship, but will cut their naturalization wait time from eleven to six years.”Provided that persons belonging to minority communities, namely, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan … shall not be treated as illegal migrants for the purposes of this Act,” reads the proposed amendment to India’s Citizenship Act. This bill is in response to the many minority groups, most with Indian origins, who have emigrated to India because of religious persecution. Take Pakistan’s Christians as an example. Though they barely make up 2 percent of the country’s population, Christians in Pakistan have endured, in the last few years, wave after wave of violence. In 2013, a set of double suicide bombings against a church in Peshwar killed 80 Christians. Then in 2015, another set of bomb blasts killed 14 people outside two churches in Lahore. And just a few months ago, on Easter of this year, another suicide attack, again in Lahore, left 73 dead and wounded hundreds more. Many of them were children who were intentionally targeted. Islamic extremists aimed to eliminate not only Christians, but their next generations. Pakistani Christians live under a constant and increasing threat of persecution. Coupled with this is Pakistan’s strict blasphemy law, which, usually abused for the sake of personal revenge, makes the idea of justice, for Christians, an illusion. The situation in Bangladesh is not so different. In the last year and a half, 48 people have been killed in Bangladesh by Islamic extremists. Among these are a 55-year-old Hindu priest and a 65-year-old Christian man, both hacked to death in June as the first was picking flowers and the second managing his grocery store. In the terrible attack against customers at a Dhaka restaurant in July those who were killed or held hostage were first asked if they were Muslims. Muslims were freed and Christians and others were held captive or killed. The Islamic extremists came to target Christians, Hindus and others.”One is vulnerable to a killer attack just because he is Hindu, Christian or Buddhist,” said Nirmol Rozario, secretary general of the Bangladesh Christian Association, when interviewed recently. The persecution of minorities, both ethnic and religious, in these Asian countries worsens by the day, and the plight these people suffer is only aggravated by the lack of empathy and action from the international community. The Christians in Bangladesh and Pakistan may soon face the same threat as those in Iraq and Syria. Those in Afghanistan already have. The

truth is that the international community is afraid — afraid of the cost of intervening in these violent affairs, and afraid of allowing within our borders the refugees displaced by war, terrorism, and religious persecution — and rightly so. These are turbulent times, and our nations’ leaders must act with great precaution and sensibility to protect their countries and citizens. Yet this doesn’t mean we should not do as much as we can to help provide a way for the destitute and the wandering to find peace, especially those religious minorities facing a particular threat. With 1.26 billion inhabitants, India has the second largest population in the world. The United States’ population is 324 million, almost one fourth of India’s population. And while India’s gross domestic product (GDP) has grown to $2 trillion a year, the seventh largest in the world, the U.S.’s soars at $17.9 trillion, almost twice as much as China’s, who has the second largest GDP in the world. In terms of space and wealth, India does not boast the comfort and power some other countries could offer (though Prime Minister Modi’s economic policies have the country well on its way); yet this doesn’t mean we are to withhold what we do have, a home, opportunity for employment, and civil rights, from our persecuted neighbors. Compassion is not measured in dollars or square feet, but by what we do with what we have. Perhaps if each nation contributed to ending this global crisis, it would not seem so daunting and unsolvable.I applaud the Indian government for lobbying for the inclusion of persecuted minorities in the Citizenship Act. This is not only a compassionate and brave move, but also a demonstration of progress. India, as the world’s largest democracy, is quietly shining a light on one of the most important issues of our day. There is no question that the legacy of many nations across the world will be bound to what their leaders will do about the persecution of religious minorities. Hungary, which recently became the first European nation to establish — despite much criticism — a government office dedicated to helping persecuted Christians from the Middle East, has set an admirable precedent for other nations to follow. Their courageous action is an affront to the general christophobia that is growing across the world. I believe India has also taken a step in the right direction. If we continue working for the protection of persecuted religious minorities, the greatest refugee crisis the modern world has seen can turn into a great testament of unity and humanity. Beauty can come from these ashes. Dr. Joseph D’Souza is the Moderating Bishop of the Good Shepherd Church and Associated Ministries of India. He can be reached at: moderator@gsoim.org.

Unless NBCC/Church undertakes clean election from Biblical worldview perspective

(From previous issue) Powerful as money is, equally destructive money is to electoral politics and one wonders how NBCC can control this widespread cancer, UNLESS treated differently. If NBCC brings pressure (through member’s church) it will be a chance for potential but moneyless candidate to say: “I have no money to buy vote but please elect me for me to pay you back richly”. If at all the voters conscientiously comply I believe they will then elect member on the basis of his/her personality, capability, honesty and principle. But with all probabilities electoral hawkers and giant investors in politics will then sleeplessly conduct all out campaign at their expense to silence or sabotage the Church altogether. During election well-to-do members, government employees, educated sections, elders etc residing inside or outside village become money changers/exchangers, and incidentally most of these people are pastors, deacons/deaconess and church or associated staffs. Given this fact, NBCC’s Clean Election must start FIRST with local pastors and his staffs then down to the last registered member in the church. Perhaps this is the most important Basic. Basic4- NPG’s electoral politics: That underground politics and state politics are poles apart need not be explained. There was a time when regional party fully utilized FGN for electoral victory; later Congress allegedly with NSCN (K) and since 1998 Election, NPC turned NPF tilted towards NSCN (IM) till date. Election violence has to be attributed largely to their unconcealed involvement in state election. In our context co-relationship between underground politics and state politics, like husband and wife need to be maintained and respected as a natural or established order but excessive interference into each other’s business on ground of suspicion or allegation would eventually break the family structure and it actually has. It is sad that NPGs have lost the original political sanctity and the splintered groups are not embarrassed to even

involve in the kitchen politics of a family. The truth has to be admitted that involvement of variable underground elements in electoral politics has not only weakened Naga cause but split the cause into many causes and likewise political parties involving variable underground elements during election has created more problems in state politics than it can handle as is seen today. It is unimaginable to propose Clean Election without addressing the potential involvement of NPGs in 2018, Election was boycotted in 1998 by them and people responded, in 2003 they called people to vote out Congress and elect NPF and people did. Now what guarantee can NBCC give that people will be allowed free and fair election without NPGs’ dictate in 2018? For how long people will be kept dreaming of never coming free & fair election, clean election or election for once without NPG’s involvement? This is one volatile Basic the NBCC must address fearlessly. Basic5- Church: There was golden time when everybody, including outside world looked upon Naga Church in deep awe and rightly so, but sadly somewhere over past years in the mist of socio-politico disorder Church lost her grip and relevance to a great extend and since then the Role of Church is being viewed with suspicion and scepticism. Where things actually went wrong NBCC had kept the reasons to herself in the past but open admittance of Church failures by the Executive Secretary, NBCC a month ago was not unsurprisingly well taken by each and every concerned Christian as timely act of sounding the Resurgence of Church. To my understanding as layperson, the Church in our context lost her original sanctity because of inclining too close to preferred political party and then reclining too comfortably with successive government, apparently in consideration of advantage from materialism perspective. Secondly, the Church lost respect of people in general because the State of Nagaland for Christ has been going through the worst ever time and experience of

eriously, to err is human that people often gets into speaking ill of other but that is not the case in today’s approach of NNC/GDRN (NA) breakout group allegation which was published in the Nagaland post dated 23rd Sept 2016 against its president Kiumukam Yimchungur. It is nothing but a waste of time. Such non political proclamations are never expected from the prodigal son. National workers with unmotivated thoughts hold no weightage but only aid to inspired violence and negative patriotism. On top of that it is only a month old since you have left for your own and within this short period of time forgetting even of yourself is regretful and hurting. We expect that

you recollect and maintain your dignity but not belie the GDRN definition. Humbly should I say that nationalist spirit is an end in itself; and not merely a means to an end like financial well-being so never use money- oriented allegation while sabotaging your compatriots. This is misguided method and is very harmful; it can even harm your personal compassion for your own natural rights. Never compromise your strength for the nation with materialistic capital. If you could remember you can learn from your president Kiumukam Yimchungurthe strength to work, he had no foreign exchange, he had no gold reserve and he had no Indian government pension like self declared president

of breakout group Kumchi Chilimong (Nagaland Police. Hawaldar retired) and Hangping Zeliang (retired Taxes Inspector) who is claiming as ato kilonser. The NNC/GDRN (NA) president Kiumukam Yimchungur is a renter with one Gypsy ‘old model’ car if I am to mention and had only one thing- his faith and his work. Thus, leading his group based upon the confidence of the nation. Perhaps this is the eternal value that is expected of us as patriots and I hope it makes a sense to all the internal enemies of the nation. Can we stop the politics of personal destruction and get ride of this poisonous venom of excessive partisanship, obsessive animosity and uncontrolled anger.

I believe this is not what the Nagas deserve nor what the national cause of the Nagas is all about. If we are good we must act well. We must also learn how to pursue our destiny persistently as there are significant challenges to face in our pursuit. There’s no hurry to jump into conclusion at all level as there are historians to reveal everything at the right time. We t h e N N C / GDRN(NA) is committed to working with good people of good faith and good will of the nagas to do what is best for our country until the dawn of the naga independence. Let’s cooperate and move on. KUKUNALIM. ‘Lt. Col’. Khehoto Rochill. Press Secretary, MIPNNC/GDRN (NA)

political uncertainty, economic retardation, social unrest, morality breakdown etc but the presence and spirit of Church was not felt where it ought to be or where it was needed most. In other words, when efforts of human’s institutions were failing in all fronts the Church did not responsibly rise up to the prevailing situation, most necessarily with practical solution to the problems from Biblical worldview perspective. The dictum “everything is politics but politics is not everything” speaks volume and I believe this principle can shape the non-partisan participation of the Church and Church-led movement in politics in coming days. Going back to the first line “2018 Election will be acid test of NBCC’s Clean Election...”, can NBCC firmly uphold the God given position and commission to recover her past glory and respect of people by safely taking the state through the security gate of Clean Election, perhaps the hardest trial of democracy but the success of which can determine the future of election for hundred or so years? Let me conclude by citing the powerful comment of Chief Albert Luthuli, a Nobel Peace laureate and former President of the ANC: “In the modern pressuregroup State it is incumbent upon Christians as individuals or as groups to participate in political activities in order to ensure that political and other national issues are considered and settled in the light of fundamental Christian principles. Through the Church Christians should be the guardians of the ethical principles on which society must be built. Any indifference on their part in this regard would lay them open to a charge of disloyalty to our Master”. (Church and teetotaller will argue that Liquor is another unavoidable Basic when we talk about Clean Election but Liquor Issue is like the used-to-be Dark Continent of Africa (here NLTP) where nobody wanted to visit and as long as it is kept that way, liquor will be consumed during election season (maybe extensively) but no less (in quantity) throughout off-season. So I have avoided liquor as a subject here.) (Concluded) Vaprumu Demo, Kohima

Centre plans autonomy for good universities: Javadekar Kollam, Sep 26 (PTI): The Centre is planning to give autonomy to “good” universities and make them ‘innovation hubs’ while impose heavy regulation on “non-performing” institutes, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said Monday. “Universities that encourage innovation would be given support by the Centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim is to have innovation hubs across the country,” he said here. “We will support good universities by giving autonomy and reduce regulation, while universities that are not performing well would be heavily regulated. The government would, however, extend support to upgrade those,” Javadekar said. He was speaking after launching ‘OceanNet’, developed by Amrita University, that enables connectivity to fishermen in the sea. It was inaugurated on the eve of the 63th birthday celebrations of spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi at Amirtapuri near here. Asserting that the country can make progress only through innovation, Javadekar said the Centre could come up with plans of partnerships between universities and industries to encourage innovations.

Prakash Javadekar

Praising ‘OceanNet’, the Union HRD minister said, “It is my duty and responsibility to support this type of ventures.” The communication system would provide a permanent solution to several issues faced by fishermen at sea. It would also help them and the Coast Guard to thwart any attempt by terrorist to sneak into the country through sea, he said. Highlighting the need to improve quality of education, Javadekar sought co-operation of all for the purpose, saying, “Education has no political agenda. It is a national agenda and not that of Left or Right.” Java d e k a r a l s o a n nounced the establishment of a UNESCO Chair for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment at Amrita University’s Amritapuri campus. Explaining the functioning of OceanNet, a university

official said the system uses Internet-based applications such as email, Skype, WhatsApp for communication and it can be accessed through smartphone. “The fishermen will finally be able to remain in touch with their families while out at sea,” Director of Amrita Centre for Wireless Networks and Applications Maneesha Sudheer said. The fishermen can connect with the system, which offers multi-lingual support, through their smartphones. Using OceanNet, Javadekar also spoke to fishermen in a fishing boat about 60 km from the shore in the Arabian Sea. State Fisheries Minister J Mercyjutty, former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy were also present. On the occasion, financial aid, pledged by the Amritanandamayi Math to victims of the Puttingal Devi temple fire tragedy in April was distributed. Rs one lakh each was given to families of 85 people who died in the tragedy and Rs 50,000 each to 40 injured. Asserting that the essence of all religion is peace, compassion and humanity, Javadekar said, “If all people become religious it is good. But some people were distorting the essence of religion.”

The mountainous region of Ranikhet has been specifically chosen for the exercise as the physical topography and geographical conditions are very much akin to Kashmir where the terrorist camps operate. 4. The exercise specifically focusses on search and drill operations. The Indian army shall have gained expertise and insights on combative tactics of the enemy like how does the terrorist set traps, how does he sit in an ambush and how he does resort to guerrilla warfare techniques. 5. Some of the drills of the exercise include how to combat the terrorist when they intrude from difficult areas and take camouflage through natural defences. 6. The drill not only focuses on the physical dimension of warfare but also covers the important elements of planning, preparation and execution of strategies. The drill also stresses on making use of state of the art equipment for tracking, identification and surveillance. The US contingent is being represented by a Company of 5th Infantry Battalion, 20 Infantry Regiment, 2 Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 7 Infantry Division, US Army while the Indian side is being represented by an Infantry Battalion.

Swaraj’s attack came even as a top US General agreed with US defense secretary Ash Carter’s decision to withhold $300 million in military support for Pakistan this year, after not being able to certify that it was adequately fighting terrorism. “It was his way of saying that there’s not adequate pressure being put on the Haqqanis,” General John Nicholson, the US commander in Afghanistan, said at a Pentagon briefing. “And I concur with the Secretary’s assessment on that.” But the arc of Swaraj’s sweep was wider, covering Pakistani terrorist depredations from New York to Uri, as she cited the “blood and tears of innocent victims,” from attacks this year alone in Kabul and Dhaka, Istanbul and Mogadishu, Brussels and Bangkok, Paris and Pathankot. Calling terrorism the “biggest violation of human rights... a crime against humanity,” Swaraj challenged the Pakistani narrative on Kashmir centering around India’s purported oppression, asking “those accusing others of human rights violations would do well to introspect and see what egregious abuses they are perpetrating in their own country, including in Balochistan. represents the worst form of state oppression.” It is possibly the first time India is raising the Baloch issue at the UN forum, representing a sharp escalation in the battle to shape perceptions on human rights violation. In fact, in an implicit counter to Pakistan’s allegations that it had apprehended an Indian agent fomenting violence in Pakistan, Swaraj named Bahadur Ali, “a terrorist in our custody, whose confession is a living proof of Pakistan’s complicity in cross-border terror.” “But when confronted with such evidence, Pakistan remains in denial. It persists in the belief that such attacks will enable it to obtain the territory it covets. My firm advice to Pakistan is: abandon this dream. Let me state unequivocally that Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and will always remain so,” Swaraj bluntly told the UN, whose Security Council resolutions Pakistan repeatedly cites to assert its locus standi in the issue. But even amid the attack, Swaraj offered an olive branch to Pakistan, countering its Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ’s assertion that New Delhi had imposed preconditions for talks. “What pre-conditions?” she asked, reminding Islamabad of several unconditional initiatives and visits by Indians leaders, including by Prime Minister Modi and herself.

New Delhi, Sep 26 (Agencies): The Indian and US army are conducting a joint military training exercise ‘Yudh Abhyas’ 2016 at Chaubattia in Uttarakhand. The exercise that commenced about a fortnight back witnessed the soldiers upgrade themselves with strategies of fighting and doctrines of combating the enemy. The bilateral training exercise will conclude on September 27. According to News Nation, all the drills are being conducted as per the strict guidelines of the UN. The exercise is being held in the forest area of Chaubattia, where the altitude ranges from 6000 feet to 7800 feet. The Indian and the US Army soldiers are taking part in this two-week long joint drill that will see them fine tune their tactical and technical skills in countering terrorism. Some of the key highlights of the joint exercise are as follows: 1. ‘Yudh Abhyas’ is not merely a joint military exercise but the operational drills on ground have been made very close to hypothetical war like situation so that it serves as in active combat engagement. 2. Though it has been hailed as military exercise but the ultimate objective of the exercise from an Indian standpoint is to achieve war preparedness ahead of its

WASHINGTON, Sep 26 (AGENCIES): India on Monday pressed for the international isolation of Pakistan if it did not forgo its use of terrorism, insisting, “such countries should have no place in the comity of nations.” Maintain the high-profile global diplomatic pressure on Islamabad following the Uri attack, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj bluntly called out Pakistan at the United Nations for nurturing and harboring terrorists responsible for attack worldwide, linking its assaults in Kashmir with the latest bombing in New York, whose perpetrator is reported to have “studied” at a Pakistani madrassa. “In our midst, there are nations that still speak the language of terrorism, that nurture it, peddle it, and export it. To shelter terrorists has become their calling card. We must identify these nations and hold them to account,” Swaraj said, after referring to Pakistan-inspired attacks only a few minutes from the UN headquarters in New York. “ T h e s e n a t i o n s, i n which UN-designated terrorists roam freely, lead processions and deliver their poisonous sermons of hate with impunity, are as culpable as the very terrorists they harbor. Such countries should have no place in the comity of nations,” she told the UN General Assembly, in a reminder that Pakistan continued to coddle Hafiz

New Delhi, Sep 26 (PTI): Gold prices moved lower by Rs 80 to Rs 31,520 per 10 grams today, tracking a weak trend overseas amid slack demand from jewellers in the domestic spot market. Silver also remained under selling pressure and lost another Rs 150 to Rs 46,350 per kg. Traders said a weak trend overseas following gold’s retreat -- after its biggest weekly advance in two months -- in response to the dollar erasing losses dimmed its appeal as an alternative investment, which hit sentiment here. Globally, gold was trading 0.31 per cent down at USD 1,333 an ounce in Singapore today.

payment, the bankers made GoAir and Indigo as parties in the case by filing interim applications, asking the tribunal to direct the budget carriers to deposit money to be paid to Airbus with it, under garnishee proceedings. In a counter move, the budget air carriers filed objections to the interim applications filed by bankers. Making submissions before the tribunal, Airbus counsel said the company was needlessly being dragged into the matter as it is neither a borrower nor a defaulter. In fact, the company is a victim in this case for someone else’s mistakes, who owe public money availed from banks, the counsel said. He also challenged the jurisdiction of DRT to adjudicate on the matter as Airbus had arrived at the agreement with Kingfisher as per English laws. “The honorable DRT does not have the jurisdiction over the matter,” he argued. However, Bankers’ Counsel Mohammad Ibrahim contended that the contract was signed in India between banks, Kingfisher and Airbus and the aircraft were to be delivered in India, and the money was paid by banks in India. DRT Bengalur u had passed an order for attachment of the money lying with Airbus in February 2014. Subsequently, the aircraftmaker moved DRAT Chennai contending that DRT Bengaluru does not have jurisdiction to pass order as the authority lies with London courts, as per the agreement between the lenders, Kingfisher and Airbus.

A key agenda is to foster cooperation among BRICS in the development of financial markets, the statement said. India has assumed the chairmanship of BRICS during 2016. Mumbai, Sep 26 (PTI): The rupee maintained its firmer undertone against the dollar for the third straight day and ended at 66.61 on sustained selling of the American unit by banks and exporters. Besides, dollar’s weakness against other currencies overseas on the back of prevailing state of uncertainty over the pace of Fed rate hike alongside robust capital inflows predominantly supported the domestic currency to sustain its momentum. The home cur rency opened substantially lower at 66.75 as compared to last weekend’s close of 66.65 at the Interbank Foreign Exchange (forex) and lost further ground slightly to hit a intra-day low of 66.79 due to initial dollar demand. However, notwithstanding the massive slide in domestic bourses, the rupee made a smart recovery towards the tail-end trade to touch a high of 66.60 before ending at 66.61, showing a gain of 4 paise, or 0.06 per cent. It has appreciated by a good 41 paise in three-day move.

Bengaluru, Sep 26 (PTI): The Debt Recovery Tribunal will pass an interim order tomorrow on the plea of a consortium of banks seeking a direction to Indigo and GoAir airlines under garnishee proceedings to deposit with it the money to be paid to Airbus by them, in a Kingfisher Airlines case. “I am under pressure, and I wouldn’t want any further delays. I would pass an interim order, tomorrow, on interim applications filed by the bankers,” DRT Presiding Officer K Srinivasan said during the hearing of the interim applications by the banks led by Oriential Bank of Commerce. He also directed Airbus to produce a letter containing details of its account held in whichever bank for freezing Rs 196 crore until the case is disposed of. A garnishment is a means of collecting a monetary judgment against a defendant by ordering a third party (the garnishee) to pay the money, otherwise owed to the defendant, directly to the plaintiff. Airbus had availed Rs 196 crore from the consortium of banks on behalf of Vijay Mallya-controlled Kingfisher Airlines in 2005. Though Airbus is in receipt of the money, it failed to deliver the planes to the now-grounded Kingfisher Airlines. The Oriental Bank of Commerce, Corporation Bank and United Bank of India, had made pre-delivery payment of Rs 196 crore to Airbus on behalf of Kingfisher after both the parties had signed a purchase agreement. Since Airbus failed to repay the pre-delivery

According to the latest macro numbers released by the government, inflation is moving downward while industrial production growth has slipped into negative territory (largely due to items such as electrical machinery). “It’s unclear whether RBI and MPC would prefer to wait for more data instead of cutting rates based on one month numbers. Also, present geopolitics would influence decision. However, monetary policy must be forward-looking and a rate cut in October will be well received and improve sentiments,” said a bank economist who did not attend the meeting.

The shy central banker who has shunned the media and refrained from making any statement since taking over from his flamboyant predecessor Raghuram Rajan on September 5 - exchanged his views with half-a-dozen senior economists last week. Such customary chats in the past between the Reserve Bank governor and economists (or bankers) — often taking place weeks before a monetary policy announcement — rarely give a glimpse into the governor’s mind. Occasionally, such meetings have even misled the visitors. But Patel’s free-wheeling conversation, laced with humour and his personal views on certain matters, has sent across a dovish signal to those who were invited. State-owned newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta accused the US and its allies of trying to “exert pressure on Damascus and Moscow, while doing nothing to meet their own obligations”. Russian ambassador Vitaly Churkin blamed the unravelling of the truce deal on the US, saying it had failed to convince mainstream rebels to distance themselves from “terrorist” groups, especially the al-Qaeda-linked Jabhat Fatah al-Sham. Mr Peskov also rejected the Western criticism at a news conference on Monday. “We note that the tone and rhetoric used by official representatives from the UK and US is generally unacceptable and it can seriously damage the settlement process and our bilateral relations, but in the interests of the higher ideas of settlement we are minded to detach ourselves from unnecessary emotion,” he said.

the two leaders will take centrestage at Hofstra University in Hampstead, about an hour’s drive from New York City, for the first of a series of three presidential debates. Clinton, 68, who is the first-ever woman to be nominated as a presidential candidate by a major political party, and the real estate mogul are in virtual dead heat, with a latest poll showing a bare two-point lead for the former secretary of state. “I think this thing will be close right up until the end,” said Clinton running mate Tim Kaine. “We have to make our

case every day. The debates are a great way to do that.” Analysts say a lot would be at stake for the two leaders as a single sentence or the slightest slip can do serious damage at this crucial time. Trump - who nobody took seriously when he filed his nomination papers last year for the first time - has risen despite infighting to be the party’s top candidate for the race to the White House but has faced flak for what many believe is a “hateful” rhetoric - against women, non- Americans, Muslims and so on.

During the week-long protest two Free Balochistan Movement (FBM) members will sit in front of Chinese Embassy every day and night for six days and end with a big demonstration on October 1, which is China’s National Day. Islamabad, Sep 26 (PTI): Police in Pakistan engages in human rights violations such as “arbitrary arrest, torture, extra-judicial killings and sexual violence,” with religious minorities especially vulnerable to the “disgruntled and corrupt” officers of the force, a global rights body said today in a damning report. The findings, contained in the 102-page report by the Human Rights Watch, is based on interviews with senior police officials, and victims and witnesses of police abuse in Balochistan, Sindh and Punjab provinces. The report details the allegedly over 2000 false “encounters” committed by police in 2015, and demanded an immediate overhaul of the country’s police system that “enables and even encourages serious human rights violations”. It found that police routinely uses torture against people in custody, particularly during criminal investigations. “Those from marginalised groups – refugees, the poor, religious minorities, and the landless – are at particular risk of violent police abuse,” it said. “Methods of custodial torture include beatings with batons, stretching and crushing legs with metal rods, sexual violence, prolonged sleep deprivation, and mental torture, including forcing detainees to witness the torture of others,” the report added.

Moscow, SEP 26 (Agencies): Russia has criticised the US and UK for using “unacceptable” tone and rhetoric in speeches on Syria at the UN, after being accused of “barbarism”. On Sunday, US permanent representative Samantha Power said Russian and Syrian forces were “laying waste” to besieged rebel-held areas of the city of Aleppo. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned that such language might damage efforts to end the five-year civil war. Activists meanwhile reported dozens of fresh air strikes on Aleppo overnight. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least two civilians had been killed, while a rescue worker accused the Syrian and Russian air forces of using munitions containing phosphorus and napalm, and cluster bombs. At least 124 people are believed to have been killed in rebel-held Aleppo since last week, when a truce brokered by the US and Russia collapsed and the Syrian military announced the start of an operation to take full control of the city. he Magnificent Seven has topped the US box office, taking $35m (£27m) on its opening weekend. The film, which stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt, is a remake of the 1960 western film of the same name. Its closest competitor was animated children’s movie Storks, which debuted at number two with $21.8m (£16.8m). The two films knocked Tom Hanks’s Sully, which has been top of the box office for the last two weeks, down to number three. The movie, which tells the true story of the 2009 “miracle on the Hudson” emergency plane landing, took $13.8m (£10.7m). olling Stone founder Jann Wenner is selling 49 percent of the magazine to BandLab, a digital music company owned by the son of an Asian billionaire, Bloomberg reported. Wenner is planning to sell to Singapore-based BandLab Technologies, a startup digital music company that was founded by Kuok Meng Ru, a son of agriculture-business mogul Kuok Khoon Hong. BandLab, which he launched in 2015, is a social network for musicians as well as fans. According to Bloomberg, BandLab will run a new, Singapore-based international subsidiary that will focus on developing live events as well as looks for merchandising and hospitality opportunities in Asia. It will have no say in editorial content. Wenner’s son and digital chief, Gus, told Bloomberg that they are hoping to take the brand into “new and different areas and markets.” The move comes as many publishing companies are looking to become less reliant on print revenue and seek out more opportunities in the online space and elsewhere. A Rolling Stone spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that advertising pages were down 14 percent from January to August compared to the same period last year. The magazine also continues to be embroiled in a defamation lawsuit over its since-retracted article about a gang rape at a University of Virginia fraternity. Just last week, a federal judge denied summary judgment on key issues in the lawsuit, meaning the case is now headed to trial. Rolling Stone was founded in 1967. The company says it has 22 million domestic digital users a month (comScore puts that number at 17.7 million) and a print readership of 12 million. Wenner, whose company Wenner Media also owns Us Weekly and Men’s Journal, has never before allowed an outside investor to own part of the magazine. According to the Wall Street Journal, the deal with BandLab doesn’t include Wenner Media. K

Thakur rules out pink-ball Test was a big success. But you need to look at overall picture before you take the final call,” Thakur told PTI. “I think we need to look into many areas before we take the final call. I would like to go into details in a scientific manner to take the final call,” he said, adding “As of now, we are not ready to implement pink ball this season.” Pink ball was expected to be used in the ongoing Test series with New Zealand but the decision was put off amid speculation that it could be done in the upcoming home series against England and Australia. The home team is also scheduled to play a oneoff Test against Bangladesh. The Cricket Board chief

explained why more time is needed before venturing into the world of pink ball. “I think we need to take the final call after keeping a few things in mind. First, how to make it more interesting (for fans) and result-oriented. If you have matches like the one in Kanpur (which lasted five days), well done. “Then we don’t need to do anything. Second, how do you involve more fans who come to the ground or watch it on TV? Third, you really need to look into areas as to how (pink ball) is impacting Test cricket at a time when enough people are not coming to watch Test cricket. What are the real reasons behind it? One more factor to be

DBS basketball tournament held

considered, he said, is the role of pink ball or red ball in terms of seam, shine, turn, swing and late swing. “With the red ball, you can have reverse swing after 20-25 overs, but with pink you can’t. So the challenge for batsman goes away,” Thakur said. Though Duleep Trophy with pink ball was a success, it attracted mixed response from the current and former players. There was no reverse swing on offer in the recentlyheld tournament as the ball held its shine for longer periods and vicious turn was also not on offer. Sachin Tendulkar has also said that playing Tests with pink-ball is not a good idea.

India win 500th Test by 197 runs

Indian team players celebrate their victory over New Zealand on the final day of the first test match at Green Park in Kanpur on Monday. (PTI) Kanpur, Sep 26 (IANS): India bowled out New Zealand for 236 in their second innings to win the first cricket Test by 197 runs on the fifth day at the Green Park here on Monday. Chasing a daunting 434, the Kiwis were 93 for four at stumps on day four and on Monday lost the remaining six wickets for just 143 runs. Luke Ronchi (80) and Mitchell Santner (71) put up a strong resistance in the first

hour of the day but their patience didn’t last long. Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin (6/132) claimed his 19th five-wicket haul and nailed the final three wickets of the day, while medium pacer Mohammad Shami scalped two wickets on the final day of India’s 500th Test. Earlier in the day, New Zealand started the day brightly with Santner and Ronchi dominating the Indian bowlers with aggressive batting in

the first hour. They stitched a 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket as they relied on positivity to fend off the Indian bowlers. Wicketkeeper-batsman Ronchi registered his second fifty in Test cricket as he completed a stroke-filled knock. However, with his score at 80 and his team’s total at 158/4, he lost his wicket, top-edging a Ravindra Jadeja delivery to Ravichandran Ashwin at point. The right-

Tommie Smith and John Carlos during the 1968 Olympic.

Washington, Sep 26 ( Ag e n c i e s ) : To m m i e Smith and John Carlos, the two African-American athletes sent home from the 1968 Olympic Games for their raised-fist protest on the medal podium, will receive a longawaited moment of redemption at a US team event at the White House this week. The two were invited by the US Olympic Committee to attend a gala dinner on Wednes-

day in Washington honoring the 2016 Olympic team and accompany the team to meet President Barack Obama at the White House the following day, Carlos told Reuters on Sunday. The image of Smith and Carlos, gold and bronze medalists in the 200-meter track event in Mexico City, thrusting their black-gloved fists into the air, has become an enduring symbol of the fight for racial equality.

Their example has surfaced repeatedly in past weeks as an inspiration to AfricanAmerican National Football League and college players protesting racial injustice after the fatal shootings of several black men by police. Smith and Carlos paid a high price for their protest, not only with the Olympic Committee but also in the court of public opinion. Standing in black socks, the two Americans bowed their heads and pushed their fists into the air as the US anthem played, shocking the world and many Americans reeling from a turbulent year in the fight for civil rights. They were suspended from the US Olympic team and sent back to the United States. It was widely interpreted as a black power salute but the athletes later described it as a “human rights salute.” Carlos said he did not expect or want an explicit apology from the Olympic Committee for sending him and Smith home, because their actions were in clear violation of policy. He said, however, that over time and as their raised-fist salute has become a precedent of sorts, US Olympic officials have a better understanding of the reasons behind their protest.

handed batsman hit nine fours and a six. Later, seamer Mohammad Shami removed B.J. Watling (18) and Mark Craig (1) to demolish the Kiwi lower middle-order. While righthander Watling struggled to fend off a pacy in-cutter that hit his pads, Craig misread a line as the ball dismantled his stumps as the New Zealanders went to the lunch with 205/7 on scoreboard. After lunch, it was just a matter of time before India took the remaining three wickets -- and they did it easily. Once again, Ashwin delivered the blows to the visitors. Santner found a delivery from Ashwin -- that turned sharply and bounced more than expected -- unplayable and the ball hit the top of the bat before ending in the hands of Rohit Sharma at silly point. Next to go was righthander Ish Sodhi (17) who moved across and exposed the stumps to a delivery from Ashwin. Ashwin then struck Neil Wagner (0) on the pads and got a leg before wicket (LBW) dismissal to seal not only his 10th wicket of the match but also India’s big win. Brief Scores: India 377/5 dec. (Pujara 78; Santner 2/79) & 318 (Vijay 65; Boult 4/67) beat New Zealand 236 (Ronchi 80; Ashwin 6/132) & 262 (Williamson 75; Jadeja 5/73) by 197 runs

Sania continues to dominate doubles ranking NEW DELHI, Sep 26 (PTI): India’s Sania Mirza maintained her numero uno position in the latest WTA women’s doubles ranking following her recent victory in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo, partnering Barbora Strycova of Czech Republic. Sania (9730) continued to be world number one in doubles but only five points separate her from her estranged partner Martina Hingis (9725). Sania and Strycova had earlier ousted Hingis and CoCo Vandeweghe in the final of the Cincinnati Open last month. Sania and Strycova have lost just once since pairing up in Cincinnati, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open and taking home a second title at the Pan Pacific Open. Among Indian men, Sakth Myneni is the highest place singles player. Myneni, who entered the main draw of the US Open after winning three rounds in the Qualifying event, dropped a rung to be placed 138th in the list. Second highest-ranked Indian singles player Ramkumar Ramanathan, who featured in the recent Davis Cup tie against Spain, plummeted 10 places to 229, while out of action Yuki Bhambri dropped a whopping 62 places to be placed 282nd in the chart.

Will speak to AIFF over I-league exodus: Goel Panaji, Sep 26 (IANS): Sports Minister Vijay Goel on Monday expressed concern over top football teams leaving the I-league, promising to speak to All India Football Federation (AIFF) to resolve the problem. “I will speak to those from the federation and ask them to find a resolution to the problem,” Goel said when asked if he was concerned about the exodus of top-flight teams from the I-league, following the emergence of the Indian Super League (ISL). Top teams from Goa like the Salgaocar FC and Sport Clube de Goa have already exited the I-league, while former league winners Dempo FC are also expected to follow suit. Goel was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the unveiling of the BRICS Under-17 football tournament logo here. Goel said both he as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi were keen on promoting football and other sports in the country. He added the U-17 tournament, which will be held parallel to the BRICS Summit, will strengthen the ties between the memberstates. “We should encourage such games between member states as that will increase bonding and create a warm atmosphere between the people of those countries,” Goel said.

volleyball Golfing great Arnold Palmer dies at 87 Imchaba tournament

Washington, Sep 26 (Agencies): Arnold Palmer, one of golf ’s greatest players whose immense popularity drew a legion of fans known as “Arnie’s Army” and helped propel the game just as television was coming of age, died on Sunday at age 87, the US Golf Association and golf media reported. “We are deeply saddened by the death of Arnold Palmer, golf ’s greatest ambassador, at age 87,” the USGA said on Twitter. Palmer, who posted 62 victories on the PGA Tour starting in 1955, died in Pittsburgh, near his hometown of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, golf media reported. A winner of seven major championships, including four Masters, Palmer had no peers as a fan favorite and always went to great lengths to ensure that every person waiting in line ended up with a cherished autograph, an approach that even today’s generation of players tries to live up to. Palmer developed his following at tournaments and on television with an affable demeanor, telegenic looks and modest background as the son of a greenskeeper. At his death, he ranks fifth on the PGA’s list of tournament victories. Palmer’s biggest

Arnold Palmer,

win may have come in 1960, when he won the US Open after being down seven shots in the final round in the greatest comeback in that tournament’s history. He beat Jack Nicklaus, a then 20-year-old amateur, by two shots, prefacing a rivalry between the two that lasted throughout the 1960s. Palmer was especially dominant from 1960 to 1963, winning 29 PGA Tour events. He was named Sports Illustrated magazine’s “Sportsman of the Year” in 1960. Palmer had an unorthodox swing and go-for-broke style that added to his appeal among fans, who became known as “Arnie’s Army” for the size of his following.

“I enjoy the crowds, and I enjoyed playing to them. I suppose that was one thing that helped me as much as anything,” Palmer told Golf. com in 2011. Palmer’s success on the course and at attracting fans helped boost television ratings for golf, making it a staple of weekend TV sports. In 1967, he became the first golfer to reach $1 million in career earnings. His last PGA Tour win came in 1973. He joined the Senior PGA Tour for players 50 and older in its inaugural season in 1980 and won 10 tournaments on that tour, including five majors, before retiring from tournament golf in 2006.

Eidur Gudjohnsen

Andre Bikey

Pune, Sep 26 (IANS): FC Pune City on Monday announced that marquee footballer Eidur Gudjohnsen of Iceland and midfielder Andre Bikey will not be able to take part in the Indian Super League (ISL) due to ankle and thigh injuries, respectively. While Gudjohnsen has an ankle injury in his left leg, Bikey injured a tendon of his right thigh that effectively ends their campaign with the club for the season. FC Pune City CEO Gaurav Modwel said this was a big loss for the club. “Eidur is the leader of the team and both him and Andre are excellent players and amazing human beings. It’s a rude shock to me to learn about their injuries and their presence will be missed by everyone in the club. “Eidur is very disappointed himself. We wish both players a speedy recovery and hope to see them on the pitch soon. I am sure our team and coaches

will fight this challenge with renewed vigour and confidence.” Former Barcelona and Chelsea striker Gudjohnsen, 38, said: “What was an exciting start to my new journey in India with FC Pune City, has come to an abrupt end, unfortunately. Just a few days back, on my left ankle, what I thought was a niggle, turned out to be more than that.” Head coach Antonio Habas said: “The injuries to Eidur and Andre both are unfortunate developments for us. Eidur had a very good preseason training stint with us in Spain, where he showed us his formidable skills. “But then injuries are a part of every sport and football is a team game so we have to move on. Eidur leaves behind a lot of valuable inputs that came with his experience and the boys have learnt a lot from his presence during the pre-season training in Spain. We wish both all the best for their future.”
