NBCC calls for prayer on Sep 6 DIMAPUR, SEP 4 (NPN): Nagaland Baptist Church Council (NBCC) has appealed to the believers to say a pray on September 6, 2019 as Nagaland observes peace day. In a press release, NBCC general secretary, Rev. Dr. Zelhou Keyho, also urged the churches in Nagaland to intercede for peace this coming Sunday (September 8) for permanent peace in Nagaland. NBCC asserted that signing of the ceasefire in September 1964 did not come easy. The church said that there was virtually a war between the Indian security forces and the Naga army where thousands of lives, including the innocent civilians, and atrocities like mass rape, burning of villages and other inhuman acts were rampant. “Within this context, ceasefire was established,” NBCC reminded. Stating that peace should not be made only as a day to be observed, but has to be lived, NBCC said “This is the hard reality the Nagas in general are facing.” Further, the church observed that Nagas have become talkers and use verbal rhetoric to destroy each other. “We observe, we pronounce and yet peace has not really settled in us, in our attitude and in our action. Today, we must weep and cry for true peace to dawn upon us,” NBCC remarked. For true peace to be established, NBCC said verbal war must cease and mutual understanding must prevail. The church has, therefore, affirmed that on peace day Nagas should generate a deep sense of responsibility to God and upon themselves to live in peace with one another. “As we observe peace day we must also realize that on the one hand, true peace is in want in our situation,” NBCC stated. The church has further called upon the believers to pray for Naga leaders. “Let us pray that God will grant wisdom to our political leaders and leaders of Naga political groups who are at the forefront leading our people in the decision making,” NBCC appealed.

UCM worried as power tussle resurfaces

Correspondent

IMPHAL, Sep 4: United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Wednesday expressed concern over the resurfacing power tussles in BJP, the party leading a coalition government in Manipur. After around a month of silence, the power tussles in the ruling BJP in Manipur resurfaced as rebel MLAs of the party demanding leadership change started rushing to New Delhi to pressurize the party’s national leaders to address their demands. The crisis within the party MLAs resurfaced after around six rebel BJP MLAs left Imphal for Delhi on Tuesday to join their colleagues who had already camped at the national capital soon after the two days session of the state Assembly concluded on August 27 last. The rebel MLAs were pressing national leaders of the party to remove N Biren Singh as chief minister of the state while levelling various charges against him. Among others, the rebel MLAs charged the chief minister of neither working to strengthen the party nor the welfare for

Such tricolours have already been installed at Guwahati and New Jalpaiguri railway stations. The NFR has identified 38 stations in five divisions for installing the flags - seven stations in Katihar division, four in Alipurduar, 10 in Rangiya, 12 in Lumding and five in Tinsukia division, the official said.

people. The MLAs were lobbying with the national leaders saying that there was no meaningful development works under the CM’s leadership and he has no right to cling to the seat of chief minister. After the the power tussle resurfaced, as many as 12 out of 22 MLAs of the saffron party in the state have rushed to the national capital. They have reportedly joined the rebel camp and re-started their campaign for leadership change. Meanwhile, a highly reliable sources in the party disclosed that some leaders of the party in the state were also planning to leave the state capital after they were summoned by the national leaders. UCM president Sunil Karam today expressed strong discontent to the resurfacing power tussle in the ruling party while stating that Manipur is under crucial situation after the Centre had reportedly expressed its desire to finalise the peace agreement with the NSCN(IM) within three months. “In such a crucial situation of the state, there is the need of having a strong stable government in the state,” he said and

added that people would not want such power tussle in the ruling party at this juncture. Now is the time for the state government to have a close watch on the development of the peace talks with the NSCN(IM) and Assam’s NRC which left out over 19 lakh people. Ta l k i n g o n t h e sideline of the opening function of “Ching Tam Traditional Cultural Festival 2019” in Imphal, the United Committee Manipur president added that it was unfortunate for the people of the state that MLAs at such crucial time were engaged in power tussle. It was against the interest of the people and people will not forgive them if any eventuality arises while they were struggling for power, he said. The UCM called the people to remain alert to face any eventuality arising out of finalisation of peace agreement between the Centre and NSCN(IM) in case it hurt the interest of state’s territorial integrity. He observed that harmonious living of different communities in the state was at stake because

Saturdays “no school bag day” for primary students: Mnp govt Correspondent IMPHAL, Sep 4: Primary class students of schools in Manipur will henceforth get relief from carrying schools bags and books on every working Saturdays. Manipur education department has declared “no school bag day” on every working Saturdays in all categories of schools in the state including government, government aided and unaided/private schools. Under the new initiative, students reading in the classes from I and to VIII will not carry any school bag and schools and school authorities will ensure taking life skill activities including extra cocurricular activities, games and sports, recreational activities, etc. According to an office memorandum issued by the state school education department on Wednesday, “no school bag day” has to be implemented for students studying in Class 1 to VIII.Students of these classes need not carry their bags and books to the school every Saturday under the new initiative of the state government. An official source in the state education department said that the decision to implement the new programme was taken after

having considered the long term physical and mental effects of carrying heavy school bags everyday by the young students reading in Classes I to VIII. “Carrying heavy bags everyday caused lots of inconveniences, health problems and discomfort to them (students), officials said. The government leant that the students in these classes are found to be always engaged with the routine works related to school curriculum/syllabi, additional homework. This made it hard for them to find any quality time for life skill activities including games and sports, extra co-curricular activities, etc. which can help in their holistic personality development and growth. The key objective of department’s new initiative was to provide a holistic development of the students by making schools a joyful place for learning. It also aimed at to reduce excessive stress created amongst the students on the one hand and also to make schools a more conducive and joyful place, they maintained. This will make schools a more joyful place of learning,” the education department stated in the memorandum.

of the peace talks between India government and NSCN(IM). Another big problem was the question of existence of the indigenous people of the state, he said. There are apprehensions of illegal migrants from the neighbouring Assam entering Manipur as fallout of the NRC in the state where over 19 lakh people were left out of the NRC list, he said. For other neighbouring states like Nagaland, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh, it was somewhat better than that of Manipur as they have mechanism to check entering of the migrants in their respective states. Manipur has no mechanism to deal with the influx of illegal migrants, he pointed out and added that automatically, the NRC left people in Assam would enter the state. At this point of time, there was the need for Manipur government to remain alert to protect the indigenous people of the state. The present infighting will certainly give an impact to the functioning of the state government, the UCM president observed.

Foreign journos can visit Assam: MHA N e w D e l hi , S e p 4 (IANS): The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday said that any foreign journalist, whether based in India or not, can visit Assam after taking permission of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). An official aware of the development said that the Home Ministry is consulted internally by the MEA before issuing such permission. “There is no PAP (Protected Area Permit) or RAP (Restricted Area Permit) in the state of Assam. Thus no PAP or RAP is needed by a foreign journalist,” he said. The Home Ministry’s reaction came following a news report mentioning that “all foreign journalists working in Assam have been asked to leave the state”. Home Ministry spokesperson Vasudha Gupta through a tweet denied the report. “The information (all foreign journalists working in Assam have been asked to leave the state) is misleading and incorrect. Neither MHA nor MEA has given any such information,” Gupta tweeted. She further said that “the responsibility of publication of such information, and consequences thereof, lie entirely with the media house concerned”.

Arunachal MP alleges Chinese incursion, Indian army disputes claim Itanagar, Sep 4 (PTI): An Arunachal Pradesh MP claimed on Wednesday Chinese troops intruded into India and built a bridge in the border state, an assertion the Indian Army appeared to reject, citing “different claims” by the two nations over areas along the Line of Actual Control. Tapir Gao, the Lok Sabha member from Arunachal (East) seat, claimed Chinese troops made an incursion into the Indian territory last month and built a bridge over Kiomru Nullah in Chaglagam circle. Some local youths noticed the bridge on Tuesday, he told journalists. The Indian Army, in a communique, said the area being referred to was called the ‘fish tail’, and that the two sides had different perceptions about the alignment of the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The terrain, the communique said, was thickly vegetated and all movement happened on foot along nullahs and streams, and that during monsoon temporary bridges were constructed by the patrols of the two armies for movement.

Tapir Gao (File)

It is reiterated that there is no permanent presence of either Chinese soldiers or civilians in the area and surveillance is maintained by our troops, the communiqué said. Gao alleged that the incursion happened approximately 25 km northeast of Chaglagam at a place which is “very much inside the Indian territory”. In October last year, an Indian Army patrol had come across Chinese troops in the area, Gao claimed. “As a representative of the state, I have requested the Centre for development of infrastructure along the Sino-Indo border in Arunachal Pradesh like construction of a road between Hayuliang, the district headquarters of Anjaw, and Chaglagam and beyond,” Gao told journalists. He said it was

necessary to stop such incidents. The condition of the road between Hayuliang and Chaglagam is very poor and virtually no road exists beyond that point, he said. T h e c o m mu n i q u e from the Indian Army, meanwhile, said India and China have well established diplomatic and military mechanisms to address all issues in the border areas. The two sides agree that maintenance of peace and tranquility in all areas of India-China border was a prerequisite to smooth development of overall bilateral relations, the communique said. Both countries have also agreed to work towards a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question on the basis of 2005 agreement on political parameters and guiding principles, it added. India and China share a nearly 4,000-km border, which is not clearly demarcated, leading to incursions by the two sides into each other’s territory. China claims Arunachal Pradesh is part of south Tibet, which it had annexed in 1950.

There are challenges to contain IMR, MMR in M’laya : Sangma Correspondent Shillong, Sep 4: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday admitted that there are challenges of containing the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) and Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in the state. Sangma was speaking at the inaugural function on Meghalaya’s experience of improving ECD (Early Childhood Development) and nutrition outcomes: results from an integrated community-led pilot in Rongram village in West Garo Hills district. Delivering the Keynote Address and sharing Meghalaya government’s vision for the provision of integrated services for young children’s development,

Sangma said that ECD and nutrition of children, pregnant and lactating mothers is an area to which the government is focussed on and taking up on a priority. “While there are challenges of containing the IMR and MMR rates there is a parallel challenge of dealing with the high fertility rate which results in a woman giving birth to five six children which brings innate challenges of its own,” he said. Highlighting the various aspects of the programme MOTHER , the Chief Minister said that economic empowerment and making the woman productive is very crucial. “The various departments be it Health, Education, Social Welfare

or Rural Development have been working in silos and there was no system in place for policy makers to have an insight or to have the various programmes of the departments monitored, through MOTHER the different departments will be integrated through technology for better and efficient tracking, monitoring and implementation of the programmes under various departments for children and women,” he informed. Sangma said that the Self Help Groups will be strengthened and added that SHGs is the best institution for ECD and other programmes for child and mother development. CLARIFICATION TO UNSTARRED QUESTION NO. 12TH RAISED BY SHRI. YITACHU MLA

This is to bring to the notice of the General Public and Legislators of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly that the Unstarred Question No 12th (Status of the G.A Rest House construction at Meluri) raised by Shri.Yitachu, MLA 20th A/C Meluri in the Assembly on 8th August 2019 was totally to confuse and mislead the Hon'ble Legislators and General Public of 20th A/C Meluri. The work was allotted to Contractor M/S. Kuyipu & Co. Regd. No. NPW/Class- 1/401 Meluri who is his own younger brother and serving as an Inspector in Co-operative Department, Nagaland. The fact is that the construction work is being personally supervised by Shri. Yitachu, MLA 20th A/C Meluri. As per document available Vide Work Order No. CAWD/R.H/ MELURI/2011 Dated Kohima 12th Feb’ 2012, an amount of Rs. 1,19,39,700/- (Rupees One Crore Nineteen Lakhs Thirty Nine Thousand and Seven Hundred) was awarded for the work. As per the reply in the Assembly, an amount of Rs. 125.09 Lakhs (DONER share), Rs. 13.90 Lakhs (State Share), total amount received Rs. 138.99 Lakhs. Out of which Rs. 110.09 Lakhs ( Rupees One Crore Ten Lakhs and Nine Hundred) was released for the construction. To the dismay of the General Public of Meluri Sub-Division and inconveniences of the Government Officers during their visit to the Sub-Division, the public wants to know why the Hon'ble MLA 20th A/C Meluri is misleading the House, when he himself is the contractor in the name of his younger brother and delaying the construction.

irregularities as he (Mukul) claims. He made a very general statement and he has to be more specific,” James told journalists. The Power minister was reacting to Mukul’s allegation of the tender document to favour predetermined bidders and the schedule of rate for implementing the Saubhagya scheme was more than 50 per cent of the actual cost of the project. “The tender value went up because initially when Saubhagya was submitted, it was at certain

scheduled of rate (SoR) and those rates were old and not relevant to the rates that are right now. There was variation in the rate if you look at the present SOR. I will come up with a very detailed reply to that in the House because there is also a question on Saubhagya,” James said. “I don’t know what he means by manipulation. There is a tendering a process and documents are scrutinized. Everything was done as per procedure. As I said, he should come up with facts,” he said.

ISRO Chairman K Sivan has said the proposed soft-landing on the Moon is going to be a “terrifying” moment as the ISRO has not done it before, whereas Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver was successfully carried out during the Chandrayaan-1 mission. Following the landing, the rover ‘Pragyan’ will roll out from ‘Vikram’ between 5:30-6:30 am on September 7, and carry out experiments on the lunar surface for a period of one lunar day, which is equal to 14 earth days. Indian delegation thwarts Pak attempt to raise Kashmir issue

Gaurav Gogoi (File)

NEW DELHI/COLOMBO, SEP 4 (PTI): A parliamentary delegation from India thwarted Pakistan’s attempt to raise the Kashmir issue at a UNICEF event in Sri Lanka, days after New Delhi scuttled another such bid at a regional meet in Maldives. Pakistani delegates tried to rake up rights issues in Kashmir at the UNICEF South Asian Parliamentarian Conference on Children Rights Convention in Colombo on Tuesday, evoking a sharp reaction from the Indian side, with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi slamming the neighbouring country’s record on rights issues of minorities. Gogoi reminded the Pakistani delegation of their country’s internal situation related to human rights, the plight of minorities and legislations such as the “blasphemy law”. Gogoi and BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal, both part of the Indian delegation, were seen in a video footage of the event asserting that Kashmir was India’s internal matter. Later, in a video statement, Gogoi said it was “highly unfortunate” that at a child rights conference organised by the UNICEF, the Pakistani delegation tried to internationalise the matter of Jammu and Kashmir. “We firmly reminded them that Jammu and Kashmir was an integral part of India and India is the largest democracy in the world and

as stakeholders in the Indian democracy, an Indian voice will be heard, not that of a vested interest, not that of a foreign country, and not certainly that of Pakistan,” he said. This comes after the Indian and Pakistani delegations had a heated exchange over Islamabad’s attempt to raise Kashmir issue on Sunday at the South Asian Speakers’ Summit in the Maldives. The Indian delegation at the summit said Pakistan should put an end to all state support to terrorism, which is the “biggest threat” to humanity. Pa k i s t a n’s D e p u t y Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri tried to raise the Kashmir issue during the discussion on “Sustainable Development Goals”. India immediately raised a point of order, after which the presiding officer asked Suri to let the Indian representative, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, to speak, but he did not pay any heed, leading to a commotion. In a strong response, Harivansh hit out at Pakistan for raising an internal issue of India and politicisation of the forum. A day later, in a snub to Pakistan, the Male Declaration adopted by the leaders at the South Asian Speakers’ Summit in the Maldives “unanimously” felt that Kashmir was an “internal matter” of India and overlooked all assertions made by Islamabad on the issue.

lander is also one lunar day, while the orbiter will continue its mission for a year. India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, GSLV MkIII-M1 had successfully launched the 3,840-kg Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft into the earth’s orbit on July 22. Chandrayaan-2 satellite had began its journey towards the moon leaving the earth’s orbit in the dark hours on August 14, after a crucial maneuver called Trans Lunar Insertion (TLI) that was carried out by ISRO to place the spacecraft on “Lunar Transfer Trajectory”.

In a major milestone for India’s second Moon mission, the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft had successfully entered the lunar orbit on August 20 by performing Lunar Orbit Insertion (LOI) maneuver. The health of the spacecraft is being continuously monitored from the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) in Bengaluru with support from Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) antennas at Bylalu, near Bengaluru, the space agency has said. The orbiter carries eight

scientific payloads for mapping the lunar surface and study the exosphere (outer atmosphere) of the Moon while the lander carries three scientific payloads to conduct surface and subsurface science experiments. The rover carries two payloads to enhance the understanding of the lunar surface. India’s second lunar expedition would shed light on a completely unexplored section of the Moon, its South Polar region. According to ISRO, the mission objective of Chandrayaan-2 is to develop and demonstrate the key technologies for end-to-end lunar mission capability, including softlanding and roving on the lunar surface. On the science front, this mission aims to further expand the knowledge about the moon through a detailed study of its topography, mineralogy, surface chemical composition, thermophysical characteristics and atmosphere, leading to a better understanding of the origin and evolution of the moon, the space agency had said. On successful completion, it will make India the fourth country after Russia, the US and China to pull off a soft landing on the moon.

AHMEDABAD, SEP 4 (PTI): Union Home Minister and BJP president Amit Shah on Wednesday underwent a minor surgery for removal of “lipoma on the back of his neck” at a private hospital in Ahmedabad, the party said. H e wa s l a t e r d i s charged, the BJP’s central media department said in a statement. Earlier, local Bharatiya Janata Party leaders claimed

Amit Shah visited the hospital for some health check up, but later the party said he underwent a “minor surgery”. “Amit Shah was admitted to K D Hospital in Ahmedabad around 9 am. He was successfully operated for lipoma at the back side of neck under local anesthesia. After this minor surgery, he has been discharged,” the party statement said.

“For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain”.

Dawood Ibrahim, Zaki-ur-Rehman-Lakhvi, Hafiz Muhammad Saeed and Masood Azhar.

NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, Lashkar-eTaiba founder Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, Mumbai terror attack accused Zakiur-Rehman-Lakhvi and fugitive mob boss Dawood Ibrahim were on Wednesday declared individual terrorists by the government under a new anti-terror law. The decisions have been taken nearly a month after Parliament approved a crucial amendment to The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 1967. They are the first to be declared terrorists under the new anti-law, a home ministry official said. The ministry cited a series of terror acts in which Pakistan-based Azhar was involved that include attack on the J&K Assembly complex in 2001, attack on Parliament in 2001, attack on Pathankot air base in 2016 attacks on BSF camp in Srinagar in 2017 and explosion of a CRPF bus at Pulwama on February 14. It said Azhar was also designated as a global terrorist by the UN under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 on May 1, 2019 and was declared as a proclaimed offender by the special judge

(POTA), New Delhi. “And whereas, the central government believes that Maulana Masood Azhar is involved in terrorism and Maulana Masood Azhar is to be notified as a terrorist under the said Act...,” a home ministry notification said. On Saeed, the home ministry said he was involved in various attacks including Red Fort in 2000, a CRPF camp in Rampur (Uttar Pradesh), India’s worst terror strike in Mumbai in 2008 in which 166 people were killed and the attack on a BSF convoy at Udhampur in J&K in 2015. Saeed, also the founder of Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD), was designated as a global terrorist by the UN under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 on December 10, 2008. “And whereas, the central government believes that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is involved in terrorism and Hafiz Muhammad Saeed is to be notified as a terrorist under the said Act...,” the notification said. On LeT commander Lakhvi, the ministry said he was involved in various attacks including Red Fort attack in 2000, Rampur CRPF camp in 2008, Mumbai in 2008 and on a BSF con-

voy at Udhampur in J&K. “And whereas, the central government believes that Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi is involved in terrorism and Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi is to be notified as a terrorist under the said Act,” the ministry said. The LeT was listed as a terrorist organisation under the First Schedule to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Lakhvi was designated by the United Nations as a global terrorist under the UN Security Council Resolution 1267 on the 10th December, 2008. The ministry said Dawood runs an international underworld crime syndicate and is involved in perpetrating acts of terror, promoting religious fundamentalism, terror financing, arms smuggling, circulation of counterfeit currency, money laundering, narcotics, extortion and benami real estate business in India and abroad. Dawood was designated as a global terrorist by the UN under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1267 and he is listed in al-Qaeda sanction list on November 3, 2003 and the United Nations Security Council had also issued a special notice in his name on April 6, 2006.

Post-mortem

Happy teachers’ day

Vol. XXIX NO. 270 Dimapur, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2019

Shaping shapers

eptember 5 is celebrated as Teacher’s Day in India as a tribute to all teachers for their contribution towards enlightenment of society. The universally accepted World Teacher’s Day is October 5. In India, the Teacher’s Day is celebrated on September 5 and this tradition started from 1962. This is the when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born. He was a philosopher, scholar, teacher, and politician and his dedicated work towards education made his birthday an important day in the history of India. It was his request that his birthday should be celebrated as an honorable day for all the teachers in the country, in case someone is wishing to celebrate his birthday at all. Some in Nagaland would vividly remember that it was Dr Radhkrishnan, the second president of India who formally inaugurated creation of Nagaland as the sixteenth state under the Indian Union in Kohima on December 1,1963.The awesome responsibility of educating the young, the torch bearers of a nation’s future, is daunting. Teaching is the most influential job in the world. Teachers are known to shape the mind of youth and without knowledge no one can exist in this world. Teacher imparts good value in children and turn them into responsible citizens. So, almost every country celebrates Teacher’s Day. In the light of the tributes, one question that comes to mind iswho is a teacher ? A teacher is a friend, philosopher, and guide who holds our hand, opens our mind, and touches our heart. However, there are different types of teachers who play an important part in shaping the shapers of society. In the words of William Arthur Ward, there are four kinds of teachers. The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. Thus, the fourth kind, who inspires is the greatest among all teachers . The teacher who inspires is also a trainer from whom a student learns and may also be called a “mentor”. Mentoring is an attribute of a great teacher whose influence on the child helps in development of a healthy and balanced personality. In a fast changing environment, teachers today have to make themselves relevant in order to realise the high standards that are increasingly emphasized in schools and school systems across the country. Till thirty years back, most people chose to be in the profession but in the recent decades, many find themselves in the profession out of compulsion. Today, teachers are made; are academically more qualified with the required B.Ed.degree. Such changes are not entirely unexpected as the world has become a global business of profit. The subjects today are no longer restricted to text books but also include many other extra curricular interests on issues such as global warming phenomenon, information and technology, inventions, HIV/AIDS, internet and the like. Also subjects such as event management, setting up NGOs, entrepreneurial skills, career guidance etc are basic and no longer specialized subjects confined to a few universities. These are the changing faces and values of contemporary teachers who are expected to shape and mould the personalities of their students in a challenging and competitive world. Shaping society is not about employment but contributing towards betterment of society at large. Teachers’ Day aims to value and acknowledge the contribution of all the teachers in shaping one’s lives.

Celebrating Teachers’ Day 2019

eachers’ Day falls on September 5. On this auspicious day, we recall the lasting contributions made by Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the first Vice President and the second President of India. He was an Indian philosopher and statesman. He is also a Bharat Ratna recipient. Teachers’ Day is celebrated in honour of Dr. Radhakrishnan. He was born on September 5, 1888 at Tirutani, Madras Presidency of then British India. Since the year 1962, India has commemorated Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birth anniversary by paying tribute to its hardworking - and admittedly under-appreciated - teachers and gurus with the Teachers’ Day. In fact, India has a warm tradition of the ‘Guru Shishya’ parampara by which teachers impart their knowledge to students and empower them. The reason is not far to seek. We all had teachers who have made a difference to our lives. Teachers, from pre-school to university level, have the power to make or break lives with the power of their influence. It is our moral responsibility to pay respect and regard to teachers, as they are role models who guide children to become good and productive human beings. Teachers also develop the creativity of children and kindle a desire in them to be innovative. To celebrate the lives of teachers who create significant changes in their students’ lives, we celebrate National Teachers’ Day on September 5 every year. A characteristic feature of our culture and heritage has been the Guru-Shishya Parampara. We are very fortunate and blessed as a civilization to have always had, since time immemorial, great gurus who have led seekers of truth to their goal. 10 things to know about India’s ‘philosopher President’ Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan On this Teachers’ Day, here are 10 things we should know about the ‘philosopher President’ of India: (i) Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, into a poor Brahmin family at Tamil Nadu’s Tiruttani, a town in the then Madras Presidency. It is said his father wanted him to become a priest and not study English. Radhakrishnan was eventually sent to a school in Thirupati. A brilliant student, he was awarded scholarships throughout his academic life. Radhakrishnan joined the Voor-

hee’s College in Vellore, though he later moved to the Madras Christian College at the age of 17. There, he studied philosophy but it wasn’t by choice. He didn’t have enough money to buy books, and his cousin, who had graduated in philosophy from the same college, passed on his books -- the choice was made for Dr Radhakrishnan. His thesis on Vedanta philosophy, which was published when he was just 20, was hailed as one of the best. (ii) Radhakrishnan completed his MA in philosophy in 1908 and became a faculty member at the Madras Presidency College. He went on to teach at the University of Calcutta, the University of Oxford, and the University of Mysore. He also served as the vice chancellor of Andhra University and the Banaras Hindu University. (iii) Radhakrishnan was popular among his students and is credited with bringing Indian philosophy to the West. When the professor was leaving the University of Calcutta to teach in Mysore, his students arranged and drove him in a flower-decked carriage from the varsity to the railway station, according to India Today. (iv) The late president was married to his distant cousin Sivakamu at the age of 16. His wife died in 1956. Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman is the great grandnephew of Dr Radhakrishnan. (v) Before holding vice presidency in 1952, Radhakrishnan was appointed as the ambassador to the UNESCO in 1946 and then to the Soviet Union. He was elected the President of Republic of India in 1962. British philosopher and Nobel laureate Bertrand Russel said of his appointment: “It is an honour to philosophy that Dr Radhakrishnan should be President of India and I, as a philosopher, take special pleasure in this. Plato aspired for philosophers to become kings and it is a tribute to India that she should make a philosopher her President.” Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888 - 1975) , the second president of India, administers the oath of office to prime minister Indira Gandhi at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. (vi) When he became the President, some of Radhkrishnan’s students requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday. He replied, “Instead

DailyDevotion Be an embodiment of supreme teacher His!

They were Yours, You gave them to Me… —John 17:6 A missionary is someone in whom the Holy Spirit has brought about this realization: “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). To say, “I am not my own,” is to have reached a high point in my spiritual stature. The true nature of that life in actual everyday confusion is evidenced by the deliberate giving up of myself to another Person through a sovereign decision, and that Person is Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit interprets and explains the nature of Jesus to me to make me one with my Lord, not that I might simply become a trophy for His showcase. Our Lord never sent any of His disciples out on the basis of what He had done for them. It was not until after the resurrection, when the disciples had perceived through the power of the Holy Spirit who Jesus really was, that He said, “Go” (Matthew 28:19; also see Luke 24:49 and Acts 1:8). “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:26). He was not saying that this person cannot be good and upright, but that he cannot be someone over whom Jesus can write the word Mine. Any one of the relationships our Lord mentions in this verse can compete with our relationship with Him. I may prefer to belong to my mother, or to my wife, or to myself, but if that is the case, then, Jesus said, “[You] cannot be My disciple.” This does not mean that I will not be saved, but it does mean that I cannot be entirely His. Our Lord makes His disciple His very own possession, becoming responsible for him. “…you shall be witnesses to Me…” (Acts 1:8). The desire that comes into a disciple is not one of doing anything for Jesus, but of being a perfect delight to Him. The missionary’s secret is truly being able to say, “I am His, and He is accomplishing His work and His purposes through me.” Be entirely His!

irst a big salutation to our Supreme father ‘GOD’, the creator Almighty. He is supreme among all souls. But unlike human souls that soul is beyond the cycle of life. God is the supreme Father, Mother, Teacher and Guide of all human souls. He shows us the directions and gives each one of his children how to play role in this world drama. The directions are his teachings. God is called the Ocean of Knowledge. He comes and imparts the entire knowledge of the creator and the creation to his children. He gives us the advice on what is the right thing to do as to receive the highest fruit. Teacher plays an important role in the creation of the society. His work does not end with his teaching in the class room. He should work for the social harmony in being a model for the student and the social worker for the community. As the world changed, a transition from metaphysical to materialism happened which are the root of all the sufferings. People have materialistic approach and they are surrounded by the vices like anger, depression, frustration, proud etc. But if we want real peace, happiness and prosperity we need to live with spiritual values. The essence of spirituality is knowing how to live with meaning and purpose. World is developing and we can see new inventions and discoveries. To give the world better scientists, lawyers, engineers and doctors the teacher plays a major role. All big people are rooted by the teachers. A best Teacher gives the best scientist, lawyer, doctor and engineer. So to all the Teachers’ wings let’s take a

of celebrating my birthday, it would be my proud privilege if September 5 is observed as Teachers’ Day.” His birthday has since been marked as a day to commemorate the contribution of teachers to our lives. (vii) It is said the former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru wanted Radhakrishnan to succeed Rajendra Prasad as president in 1957 but due to strenuous opposition from Maulana Azad, this did not happen. Nehru ensured that Radhakrishnan became the leader of the Indian Republic in 1962. (viii) Radhkrishnan’s presidency was tumultuous. India witnessed two wars during his time in office -- against China months after his ascendancy and against Pakistan in 1965. In his broadcast to the nation on September 25, 1965, he said: “Pakistan assumed that India was too weak or too afraid or too proud to fight. India, though naturally disinclined to take to arms felt the necessity to defend herself when attacked. Pakistan also assumed that communal disturbances would occur in the country and in the resulting chaos, she could have her way. Her miscalculations must have come to her as a rude shock.” In 1964, Nehru passed away and Lal Bahadur Shastri’s death two years after in Uzbekistan came as a shock. (ix) The great Indian thinker, S Radhakrishnan “throughout a long life had never been guilty of a mean deed; and it is unlikely that he ever had a mean thought”, his son Sarvepalli Gopal wrote in a biography. (x) In an article in India Today, former politician K Natwar Singh said then prime minister Indira Gandhi did not take kindly to Radhakrishnan’s public criticism of her government and she denied him a second term in 1967. “This was a great blow to Radhakrishnan.” The last few years of Radhkrishnan’s life were lonely and depressing, said Singh, adding: “The most articulate of men lost his power of speech, then the body gave way and lastly his mind.” “Finally, in the early hours of 17th April 1975, Radhakrishnan drifted out of the harbour of a silent tide,” his son wrote in his biography. Let us pray together on this auspicious day, that our ideal teachers continue to help and guide us, individually and collectively, in building a nation and world defined by wisdom, peace and harmony. In India the teacher’s day is celebrated on 5th September. The birth date of the second President of India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan 5th September, 1888. has been celebrated as Teacher’s Day, and this tradition started from 1962, This is the when Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born. He was a philosopher, scholar, teacher, and politician and his dedicated work towards education made his birthday an important day in the history of India. We remember the great work of this exemplary person on this day. Now, talking about the rest of the world, world Teachers Day is celebrated on 5th October and it started from 1994, it was UNESCO who started this tradition. The focus set by UNESCO was to celebrate the engrossment and accomplishment of teachers and also the primaries that they put on the field of education. Why do we celebrate? Teaching is the most influential job in the world, teachers are known to shape the mind of youth and without knowledge no one can exist in this world. Teachers impart good value in children and turn them into responsible citizens. So, almost every country celebrates teachers Day. Teachers form the most important part of our lives after our parents. A teacher’s job is the noblest and selfless one. They invests their life in grooming and developing young minds, A teachers is a friend, philosopher, and guide who holds our hand, opens our mind, and

touches our heart. Teachers are regarded as the backbone of our society. They have the greatest contributions to build up the characters of students and help them to become ideal citizens of our country. Parents bring up their children’s and give food and drinks for their survival, but the teacher’s arouse their hearts with light of knowledge and remove all sorts of ignorance. The teacher’s teach students most carefully and sincerely and love them as their own children. They are just like a good gardener, A teachers sows seeds of moral ethics within us so that we can become good citizen. Teachers are an extremely important facet of any society for a number of reasons and their role in society is both significant and valuable. Teacher’s play an extraordinary part in the lives of children for the formative years of their development and the importance of teachers is something that cannot be understated. A teacher can be a positive role model for hundreds of impressionable students. They are the nation builders, Teachers are modernday heroes, Everyday they work hard to shape and mould the lives of young minds by teaching them valuable lessons, many of which go beyond books and computers. Nevertheless, I appreciates all the Teachers who are teaching from different Schools, and Colleges within Nagaland, especially I would like to give a big appreciation to all the teachers of G.M.S Ekranipather for their firm dedication and devotion towards their duties, who work hard day and night to bring out the best in Students of GMS Ekranipather Village. Won’t be intimidated, will keep Pak pushing infiltrators into Kashmir: Army asking hard questions: Congress

Rain pounds Mumbai; IMD issues ‘red alert’ M u m b ai , S ep 4 , (AGENCIES): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ asking the authorities to be prepared to handle any situation. The department has predicted intense rain in Mumbai and the surrounding areas in the next 24 hours. Electricity supply to various parts of the city was discontinued after the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) substations at Matunga, King’s Circle and Wadala were submerged in water. The IMD said that 100 out of the 150 weather stations in the city recorded over 200 mm rain in the last 24 hours. Andheri East in

Mumbai recorded the highest rain, around 214 mm, in six hours. Andheri West, Vikhroli, Marol and Ville Parle also received record rain on Wednesday. Train services on various lines were stopped as a result of waterlogging. People have been asked to avoid venturing near the sea or walking in waterlogged areas. Mumbai residents have been asked to call 1916 for any assistance. Overnight rains have also resulted in waterlogging and traffic disruption in Sion, Parel, King’s Circle, Dadar and Byculla. In the wake of IMD’s warning of heavy rainfall for Wednesday, all Mumbai schools shall remain closed today.

was to target Indian Army units,” Mohammad Nazim said while sipping tea. The duo admitted that they were being trained by Lashkar and Pakistan Army personnel, and named several of their accomplices. Lt Gen Dhillon said Pakistan is “desperate” for terrorists to infiltrate and to disrupt peace in the Valley. He said in Pakistan occupied Kashmir, all the launch pads are full with terrorists of various ‘tanzims’ (terror groups). “Even these two captured terrorists were housed

terrorists who are Pakistani citizens with us,” Lt Gen Dhillon said. The Director General of Military Operations (DGMO) of the Indian Army has already conveyed to the DGMO of Pakistan about these apprehended individuals, he said. He said war-like stores and some IED material were recovered from these two individuals. Lt Gen Dhillon said anti-terrorist operations were going on and there was no let-up in the operation in the hinterland. “As you are aware in the last 30 days, the terrorists have been killed or apprehended. So, there is no let-up in the anti-terrorists operations,” he added. He said the Pakistan Army has been trying day and night to infiltrate terrorists into Kashmir, but these efforts were being effectively dealt with. “The DGMO has informed Pakistan DGMO that we have two Pakistani citizens in our custody,” Lt Gen Dhillon said.

FNR clarifies to accusations

FNR said reconciliation yielded result in the de-escalation of factional violence adding this showed that pursuance of what is best, right and needed for all, becomes the overriding common concern. It described this as a positive and welcome development for people who have been wounded and traumatised. In this regard, FNR also acknowledged the increase in the number of stakeholders while not denying that some groups have used the reconciliation process to broaden their ambit especially in the area of taxation. FNR said many vested interests have also used the space and free movement provided by the reconciliation process to exploit the situation. It mentioned the business community who continue to groan under multiplied taxations which

it said, directly affected consumers who have to bear the brunt. FNR said random and excessive taxation was alienating people and that people’s security need to be protected under such situation. FNR said at such a time, what was needed was to think and act consciously with wisdom, foresight and maturity as no “outside nation” will solve the Naga national problem. However, it also pointed out that Naga alone cannot solve their national issue with India and Myanmar. Therefore, while seeking solutions to many varied problems faced by Nagas, FNR said there was need to accept how “we have hurt one another.” Despite these, FNR said Nagas need to seek forgiveness and live in a new reconciled relationship and mutual respect. It said Nagas need to sing in unison and

harmony with NSCN (I-M) and NNPGs to meet with mutual respect, belonging and honestly talk across the table regarding the “political competencies” that affect the future of Nagas. FNR said the groups should understand that failure to do so would only impede our shared belonging. In the light of the above, FNR said the main task today was for every Naga organisation, leader, man and woman to remain calm and thoughtful with a right spirit. FNR cautioned against falling to temptation of “irrationalised rhetoric, over-confidence, aggressive arrogance and emotionalised reactions, ” when the need was build mutual trust, integrity, self-confidence, self-responsibility and a new awareness, without any pretence or denial or who we are as a people with dignity.”

Indian Youth Congress protests detained by security personnel at Raisina Road in New Delhi, Wednesday. (PTI)

NEW DELHI, SEP 4 (PTI): The Congress hit out at the BJP-led Centre on Wednesday over D K Shivakumar’s arrest, asserting the opposition party will not be intimidated by the “politics of persecution” and continue to pose “hard questions” to the government. It also said the 96 days of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government’s second term are characterised by three words -- “tyranny, chaos and an-

Several Youth Congress workers were detained on Wednesday following a scuffle with police personnel during a protest against the arrest of the party’s Karnataka leader D K Shivakumar. The protesters raised slogans against the government and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah outside the Indian Youth Congress’ office in central Delhi. While police barricaded the road leading to Parliament, a number of protesters tried to break through and jostled with police personnel. “A number of protesters were de-

archy”. Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari cited economic slowdown, “undeclared emergency” in Kashmir and the situation in Assam following the publication of the updated final NRC, to claim there has been a “complete breakdown of governance” in the Narendra Modi government’s second term. At a press conference, he alleged in order to cover up this complete breakdown

of governance, continued “persecution” of opposition leaders was being carried out and the arrest of Shivakumar is the latest in a series of “continued political vendetta”. “D K Shivakumar’s only crime was that he provided protection to those Congress MLAs of Gujarat who were being poached by the NDA-BJP during the Rajya Sabha elections,” Tewari said. The Enforcement Directorate arrested Shivakumar in the national capital on Tuesday in connection with a money-laundering case after grilling the Congress’ Karnataka troubleshooter repeatedly over the past few days. “Has there been any conviction of any opposition leaders in the last five years? For the last five years, this politics of persecution has been carried on relentlessly against opposition leaders of every shade and hue,” he said.

He claimed that some of the protesters were injured in police lathicharge and were hospitalised. A senior police official, however, said 66 protesters have been detained but there was no use of force against them. Youth Congress President, Srinivas BV, said, “The BJP government is targeting opposition leaders to divert attention from real issues of unemployment and economic downturn.”

at the Pakistani forward posts of the Army, and then they were guided by the Pakistani regular troops up to the LoC,” he said. Lt Gen Dhillon said the captured Pakistani nationals, in their statements, have revealed all the launch pads across the Line of Control (LoC), not only opposite Kashmir but also opposite Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu, are full of terrorists of various groups, and every day infiltrations are being attempted. “As you are aware, a few of them were neutralised at the LoC, including an incident where five to seven Pakistani terrorists were lying dead at the LoC for a number of days. A hotline message was sent to the DGMO Pakistan to pick up the bodies of Pakistani citizens, which they refused to and it is nothing new. “In Kargil, they refused to take back the bodies of their soldiers. SRINAGAR, SEP 4 (PTI): The Army on Wednesday said Pakistan is pushing infiltrators into Kashmir to carry out terrorist activities and create disturbance in the Valley, particularly after August 5, as it captured two Pakistani nationals associated with the Lashkar-eTaiba while they were trying to enter the Indian side. General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Army’s 15 Corps Lt General K J S Dhillon and Additional Director General of Police Munir Khan met reporters in a fortified cantonment area and played two videos during the press briefing showing the apprehended Pakistanis confessing to infiltration. “These two videos very clearly show how Pakistan, its Army and the citizens of Pakistan are being pushed into Kashmir to undertake terrorist activities in the Valley to disrupt the peace that is prevailing, especially after August 5,” Lt Gen Dhillon said. India’s growth slumped to a six year low of 5% in the June quarter. Monthly automobile sales have collapsed, in some cases as much as 50%, plunging dealerships into losses and triggering job cuts. The government has announced stimulus measures and reforms including a merger of state-run banks aimed at strengthening them and bolstering credit expansion in order to revive growth. “Suggestion to consolidate PSU banks was given 25 years ago… This had to be done,” said Kumar. “If there is a strong execution team, then any credit slowdown can be taken care of. The biggest issue is IT, human resource and customer integration.”

Tax collections could fall by as much as 1 trillion rupees ($14 billion), or 4% of $344 billion annual target, two of the officials said, noting that sharp shortfalls are expected both in goods and services tax (GST) and income tax collections. “Overshooting the fiscal deficit target is inevitable this year as the economic slowdown has hit government revenue,” a senior adviser said, adding the deficit would rise unless the government resorts to hefty spending cuts.

MUMBAI, Sep 4 (Agenc i e s ) : T h e n ex t t wo months are crucial for the Indian economy that’s facing its worst slowdown in six years amid debate about whether the downturn is cyclical or structural as the key automobile industry faces headwinds, said State Bank of India chairman Rajnish Kumar. He reiterated his support for the government’s move to consolidate state-owned banks, The Economic Times reported. “If we see the automobile sector, today I read Kia Motors reported very good numbers… That sector is going through a lot of churning,” Kumar told ET in an interview ahead of SBI’s annual banking and economics conclave. “There are issues around environment,

New Delhi, Sep 4 (PTI): Gold continued its rally for the second consecutive day, climbing Rs 122 to Rs 39,248 per 10 gram in the national capital on Wednesday following overnight gains in the precious metal in global markets, according to HDFC Securities. Silver prices also maintained the rising trend and zoomed Rs 2,070 to Rs 50,125 per kilogram. Gold prices for 24 karat rose to Rs 39,248 per 10 gram from the previous close of Rs 39,126 per 10 gram on Tuesday. Tracking firm trends in the domestic market, silver prices also jumped to Rs 50,125 per kg from the previous close of Rs 48,055 per kg on Tuesday. “Spot gold prices in Delhi were quoting higher in morning by Rs 122 with overnight rally in global gold prices,” Tapan Patel, Senior Analyst (Commodities), HDFC Securities said. NEW DELHI, Sep 4 (Agencies): India is likely to miss its fiscal deficit target for the current financial year, despite receiving an additional dividend from the central bank, five government officials and advisers said, as tax collections have sunk amid a sharp slowdown. According to Reuters, with economic growth falling to a six-year low of 5% in the April-June quarter, the sources said the government could toward the end of 2019 be forced to raise the fiscal deficit target to 3.5% of GDP from 3.3%, amid pressure for additional stimulus measures. points to settle above the key 10,800-mark. The 30-share index ended 161.83 points, or 0.44 per cent, higher at 36,724.74. The broader Nifty after opening on a flat note in the morning traded in the range of 10,858.75 and 10,746.35 during the session. It finally ended the day with 46.75 points, or 0.43 per cent, gains at 10,844.65. Meanwhile, the 10-year government bond yield was at 6.55 per cent on Wednesday. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, rose 1.17 per cent to USD 58.94 per barrel. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers in the capital markets, pulling out Rs 2,016.20 crore on Tuesday, provisional exchange data showed. The Financial Benchmark India Private Ltd (FBIL) set the

reference rate for the rupee/ dollar at 72.1899 and for rupee/euro at 78.9998. The reference rate for rupee/ British pound was fixed at 86.7193 and for rupee/100 Japanese yen at 67.92. The Indian currency has witnessed a significant decline since the start of this year amid sustained foreign fund outflows and weak macro economic environment. India’s GDP growth fell to an over six-year low of 5 per cent in the June quarter. Besides, the growth of eight core industries dropped to 2.1 per cent in July, mainly due to contraction in coal, crude oil and natural gas production. Moreover, the lingering US-China trade war and Brexit fears dragged the domestic currency, traders said. President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned China over delaying trade talks. “We are doing very well in our negotiations with China. While I am sure they would love to be dealing with a new administration so they could continue their practice of ‘ripoff USA’ (USD 600 B/ year), 16 months plus is a long time to be hemorrhaging jobs and companies on a long-shot....,” Trump said in a tweet Tuesday.

Forex traders said the Indian currency gained following weakness in the US dollar. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, slipped 0.35 per cent to 98.65 weighed down by weak factory activity in the US, which shrank in August for the first time since August 2016. enhance industrial cooperation, create new technological and investment partnership, especially in advanced high-tech areas and find new avenues and forms of cooperation,” it said. India-Russia bilateral merchandise trade was about USD 8.2 billion during 2018-19. Both the sides expressed their interest in expanding the participation of Russian business in ‘Make in India’ programme and that of Indian companies in investment projects in Russia. In this context, the statement said they agreed to speed up preparations for signing of the IndiaRussia Intergovernmental Agreement on Promotion and Mutual Protection of Investments. It was also agreed to intensify work for eliminating trade barriers. This would be facilitated, inter alia, by the proposed Trading Agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the Republic of India.

The statement further said India is ready to play a significant role in the Arctic Council, while Russia expressed its readiness to participate in major infrastructural and other projects in India. The two sides have also agreed to cooperate in supply of coking coal from Russian Far East to India. “The leaders are determined to forge cooperation in geological exploration and joint development of oil and gas fields in Russia and India, including offshore fields,” the statement said. I n d i a a n d Ru s s i a agreed to consider the prospects for expanding cooperation in hydro and thermal power, energy efficiency as well as for designing and constructing facilities that generate energy from nonconventional sources. “With the signing of the Roadmap for cooperation in Hydrocarbons for 2019–24 during the Summit, both Sides expect bilateral cooperation in this

sector to touch new heights in the next five years,” it added. Further, the two sides agreed to review possibility of expanding direct passenger and cargo flights including flights between various regions of both the countries. Also, the Sides acknowledged the opportunities to increase bilateral trade in the sphere of agriculture. They expressed their intent to take specific steps to enhance legal framework in this sector and harmonize phytosanitary standards, develop logistics, find new ways to promote agricultural commodities in the two countries’ markets and study the capacities and needs of each other more carefully. Modi, who arrived in Russia on a two-day visit on September 4 during which he will also attend the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF), is the first Indian prime minister to visit to the Russian Far East Region.

LO N DO N, SEP 4 (AGENCIES): British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday demanded an Oct. 15 snap election after lawmakers seeking to prevent a no-deal Brexit dealt him a humiliating defeat in parliament which he cast as an attempt to surrender to the European Union, reports Reuters. Parliament’s move leaves Brexit up in the air, with possible outcomes ranging from a turbulent no-deal EU exit to abandoning the whole endeavour - both outcomes that would be unacceptable to swathes of the United Kingdom’s voters. An alliance of opposition lawmakers backed by 21 rebels from Johnson’s Conservative Party defeated the government on Tuesday on a motion allowing them to try to pass a law which would force a three-month extension to Britain’s EU exit date. Johnson vowed never

Boris Johnson

to delay Brexit beyond Oct. 31 and challenged opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to agree to an Oct. 15 election. “Can I invite the leader of the opposition to confirm, when he stands up shortly, that if that surrender bill is passed, he will allow the people of this country to have their view on what he is proposing to hand over in their name with an election on October the 15th?” Johnson told parliament. However, he needs the backing of two-thirds of lawmakers and opposition parties are united in wanting to prevent a no-

deal Brexit before agreeing to an election. Johnson said his strategy was to get a Brexit deal by an EU summit on Oct. 17 and “get Brexit done”. He said the British government was making substantial progress and would succeed in removing the Irish border backstop. The showdown between prime minister and parliament continues on Wednesday, including a vote on the attempt to block no deal. Finance minister Sajid Javid told parliament he was “turning the page on austerity” as he promised the biggest spending increases in 15 years, a move widely seen as part of the government’s push for an election. As the three-year Brexit crisis approaches a crescendo, the United Kingdom was edging towards an election as most British politicians see no other way to break the impasse.

Vladivostok, Sep 4 (PTI): India and Russia on September 4 decided to step up industrial cooperation and create new technological and investment partnership, especially in advanced high-tech areas, with an aim to increase bilateral trade to USD 30 billion by 2025. According to a joint statement issued by the Russian government after 29th India–Russia Annual Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Vladimir Putin also agreed that the work on promoting mutual settlements of payments in na-

tional currencies will be continued. PM Modi is visiting Russia on the invitation of President Putin. The 20th India–Russia Annual Summit was held in Vladivostok. Modi also participated in the 5th Eastern Economic Forum as the Chief Guest. The leaders expressed satisfaction with the stable mutual growth of trade turnover, the statement said. “To bring it to USD 30 billion by 2025, they agreed to more actively engage the impressive resource and human resources potential of India and Russia,

BRICS countries stepping up technology transfer

Old video of Imran Khan ‘civil war if US troops leave Afghanistan’ slamming Pak Army goes viral

K u n m i ng , S e p 4 (IANS): BRICS countries are stepping up technology transfer and transformation, said a conference organised by the BRICS Technology Transfer Center in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province. Technological innovation and transfer experts from BRICS and south and southeast Asian countries as well as scholars of key fields, including biomedicine, clean energy, modern agriculture and digital economy attended the conference, which was held on Tuesday. Representatives from enterprises, universities and research institutes in 11 countries and regions, including the BRICS members (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) held discussions on seeking closer international technology cooperation. A display and trading system for international technology transfer was launched on the occasion.

New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): An old video of Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan slamming the Pakistan Army for bombing and killing innocent people in Balochistan has gone viral on social media. In the video, Khan is seen addressing a gathering where he is questioning the Pakistan Army for killing their own people including women and children. He also accused the Army of the extra-judicial killings going on in Balochistan. “Our army bombing people in Balochistan, how can we bomb our own people, is there any army you are bombing? It is our own people with their children, but it is important to understand are we just bombing our people, just think about the immorality of bombing villages with the women and children,” Khan said in the video. “You are talking about six million people in the tribal areas that are being

Imran Khan

bombed, their economy has been destroyed, they are living in refugee camps, how are they surviving, and what about the extrajudicial killing that is going on,” he added. The Pakistan Prime Minister also said that crime against humanity is going on in Balochistan. Earlier in July, Khan was left red-faced while addressing a gathering at a community event in the US when pro-Balochistan activists started raising slo-

gans, demanding an end to human rights violations. In a Twitter post, the World Baloch Organisation wrote: “We urge President @realDonaldTrump to help ensure an end to #EnforcedDisappearances, torture and extra-judicial killings by authorities in Pakistan.” “Kidnapping, raping and murdering by #TerroristNationPakistan, #BalochistanWantsFreedom @ UN @UN_HRC,” another user had tweeted.

Kabul, Sep 4 (IANS): Nine former US ambassadors have warned that Afghanistan could collapse in a “total civil war” if US President Donald Trump withdraws all American forces before the Afghanistan administration and the Taliban conclude a peace settlement. “A major troop withdrawal must be contingent on final peace,” the nine former diplomats wrote on the website of the Atlantic Council, a think tank group on Tuesday. “The initial US drawdown should not go so far or so fast that the Taliban believe they can achieve military victory,” reported Tolo news. The nine envoys, including five former ambassadors to Kabul, a former special envoy to Afghanistan and a former deputy secretary of State, issued their warning a day after the US chief negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad said the US and the Taliban have agreed in principle on withdrawal of nearly 5,000 American troops from Afghanistan. Khalilzad in an inter-

view with Tolo news declined to say how long the rest of the roughly 14,000 US troops would stay in Afghanistan. However, the US officials have repeatedly said that the pullout would be “conditions-based”. The withdrawal of the 5,000 troops from five bases in 135 days will be followed by Taliban’s commitment

to preventing their decadeslong ally, al Qaeda, or other extremists from using the country as a haven for new attacks. Khalilzad had said that Trump should approve the draft before it can be signed. The former envoys wrote that maintaining a major US troop presence would have “a critical influence on

the chances for successful peace negotiations.” “It is not clear whether peace is possible. The Taliban have made no clear statements about the conditions they would accept for a peaceful settlement with their fellow Afghans, nor do they have a track record of working with other political forces,” they said.

CEO must face prison Ariana Grande sues Forever 21 Bieber, Lavigne, Gosling forFbprivacy woes: US Senator discover they’re all related D

I

n a strange twist of fate, Justin Bieber, Avril Lavigne and Ryan Gosling have discovered that they’re all apparently related. Bieber took to Instagram to share a family tree from ancestry.com to show how was related to his fellow Canadian superstars. It turns out that he and Gosling are 11th cousins once removed, while Lavigne is Bieber’s 12th cousin. “This is the best day of my life,” wrote Bieber as he shared the news. “It seems super legit.” Replying in the comments, Lavigne wrote: “I’ll host Christmas dinner this year”.

Gosling is yet to comment on his newly-discovered famous relatives. Breaking down the connection, Exclaim explained: “Bieber’s 11th great-grandparents are Gosling’s 10th great-grandparents, with Lavigne’s slightly more immediate family branching off from Bieber’s third cousin nine times removed.” Lavigne is also said to be connected to the Canadian Dion family, but not directly to Celine Dion. This week also saw Bieber share a long and heartfelt message about his struggles with depression, drugs and childhood fame. Bieber has been open

with his followers about his life and struggles with mental health on Instagram in recent months. In March, he told fans that instead of music he was focused on “repairing some of the deep-rooted issues that I have”, though he has recently promised that he has some new music on the way. Meanwhile, this year saw Lavigne release her comeback album ‘Head Above Water‘ – which NME described as “not her most banging album, but it is a deeply honest one that sounds a lot like growing up gracefully”. emocrat Senator Ron Wyden from Oregon is demanding jail term for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, saying he should face serious consequences for letting his social media platform misuse consumers’ personal data. “Mark Zuckerberg has repeatedly lied to the American people about privacy. I think he ought to be held personally accountable, which is everything from financial fines to -- and let me underline this -- the possibility of a prison term,” Senator Wyden told Portland’s Willamette Weekly newspaper. “He hurt a lot of people,” added Wyden who introduced a bill in 2018 that would give the US Federal Trade Commission powers to punish firms that violate consumers’ data privacy, MarketWatch reported on Tuesday. “In financial services, if the CEO and the executives lie about the financials, they can be held personally accountable,” Wyden added. In July, the US FTC slapped a massive $5 billion fine on Facebook over users’ privacy violations in

the Cambridge Analytica scandal, along with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) directing the social networking platform to pay $100 million penalty for making misleading disclosures regarding the risk of misuse of user data. Apart from the recordbreaking $5 billion penalty, Facebook was asked to submit to new sweeping restrictions and a modified corporate structure that will hold the company accountable for the decisions it makes about its users’ privacy. There have been several incidents after the Cambridge Analytica episode where Facebook acknowledged series of privacy lapses, including the latest admission that it mishandled millions of users’ passwords on Instagram and “unintentionally” uploaded emails of nearly 1.5 million of its new users. P

op star Ariana Grande has filed a lawsuit against Forever 21, accusing the fashion brand of using a look-alike model in a promotional campaign. She has claimed that the campaign appears to be inspired by her “7 rings” music video, reports people.com. The singer is asking for $10 million for the supposed misappropriation. In the complaint, Grande, 26, has alleged that after she declined to participate in an endorsement deal in early 2019, Forever 21 and its sister

brand, Riley Rose, used her “name, likeness and other intellectual property to promote their brands for free”. She had turned down the deal because the compensation offered by Forever 21 for proposed social media marketing was “insufficient for an artist of her nature”. Earlier this year, Forever 21 launched a campaign that allegedly capitalised on the success of Grande’s album “Thank U, Next” and featured copied scenes from her “7 rings” music video. According to the lawsuit, Forever 21 published

“at least 30 unauthorised images and videos misappropriating Ms. Grande’s name, image, likeness, and music in order to create the false perception of her endorsement”. It is also being claimed that the fashion brand hired a model who looked like Grande and wore her hair in the same double buns style that the singer did in the “7 rings” music video. They also used lyrics and audio from “7 rings” in Instagram posts without her permission. The Instagram posts were deleted by Forever 21 in April. (IANS)

obert Pattinson has discussed taking on the role of Batman for the first time since being confirmed as the next Caped Crusader. It was officially revealed at the end of May that the Twilight star would replace Ben Affleck as the iconic character. In his first interview since the casting was announced, Pattinson remained teasingly vague – but claimed that it will see Bruce Wayne heading in an “interesting direction”. “I really like [director] Matt Reeves and his setup for it,” he told Variety. “It’s an interesting direction. It’s something from the comics which hasn’t really been explored yet. It’s crazy shoes to fill. “It’s interesting the different directions you can take with it and that the, in some ways, quite a specific character actually has a lot of leeway. When you look at the different tones of the movies and TV shows, you can do quite a lot with it.” Describing the routine of putting on the iconic Batsuit for the first time, he explained: “It’s pretty astonishing, something that is incredibly difficult to get into, so the ritual of getting into it is pretty humiliating. “You’ve got five people trying to shove you into something. Once you’ve got it on, it’s like, ‘Yeah, I feel strong, I feel tough’, even though I had to have someone squeezing my butt cheeks into the legs.” Elsewhere, Pattinson admitted he was “fucking furious” at premature reports linking him with the role. “When that thing leaked, I was fucking furious,” Pattinson said. “Everyone was so upset. Everyone was panicking from my team. I sort of thought that had blown up the whole thing.” It was recently revealed that Pattinson’s version of Batman, set for a 2021 release, won’t be another origin movie delving into the past of the character. Producer Michael E. Uslan has also hit out at a backlash at the casting of Pattinson in the role, saying: “Wait until you see it”. (NME)

Ashes: Aus recover after India face Oman in opening Word Cup Qualifiers early Eng breakthroughs

Steve Smith in action during fourth Test on Wednesday. (Reuters) MANCHESTER, Sep 4 (Agencies): Steve Smith continued his outstanding Ashes form, striking an unbeaten 60 as Australia recovered from another failure by their openers to reach 170-3 at the close of the rain-affected first day of the fourth Test against England at Old Trafford on Wednesday. According to Reuters, rain caused a delay of over two hours after lunch but plans to extend play to regain that lost time were abandoned after rain came in again during the break for tea. The afternoon delay

did little to disrupt Smith, though, who returning from missing the last Test due to concussion, made his eighth straight Ashes half-century. Smith and Marnus Labuschagne put on 116 for the third wicket before the latter was bowled by a beautiful delivery from Craig Overton for 67. Stuart Broad claimed the wicket of David Warner for the fifth time in this series with the left-hander caught behind as he made a belated decision to leave the ball but gave a thin outside edge to Jonny Bairstow. Australia found themselves at 28-2

when Broad rapped the pads of Marcus Harris and, after some consideration, umpire Kumar Dharmasena raised his finger and his verdict was upheld by video review. The departure of Harris brought the returning Smith to the crease after 38 minutes of play, the world’s number one-ranked batsman having missed the previous test due to concussion as a result of a bouncer from Jofra Archer. But with England sensing a chance to eat into the Aussie middle order before lunch, Smith and Labuschagne quickly settled and set about upping the run-rate. Labuschagne, retained in the side after replacing Smith as a substitute for the second innings at Lord’s and at Headingley, went on to make his fourth straight half century. Ominously for England, Smith, who has two centuries and a 92 to his name in the series, looked as if he had never been away as he calmly dealt with Joe Root’s attack. Travis Head was unbeaten on 18 at the close.

G u wa h at i , S e p 4 (PTI): India will again look up to the talismanic Sunil Chhetri when they open their 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers against Oman here on Thursday in coach Igor Stimac’s biggest test so far. A member of the Croatian team that reached the semifinals of the 1998 World Cup, Stimac is undoubtedly one of the most high-profile names to have managed India, but the start hasn’t been impressive. A third-place finish in the King’s Cup in Thailand was followed by an uninspiring outing in the Intercontinental Cup at home where Stimac experimented. The task is only going to get tougher in the coming months and the Croat is aware of the challenges facing his currently 103ranked side. He has acknowledged that Oman, along with Qatar, are the two strong favourites in the group. “Realistically, Qatar and Oman are the favourites in our group. We have never won an official

(World Cup qualifying) match against either of them. So it’s not going to be easy at all. In Guwahati we are going to give everything on the pitch, aiming to win it,” Stimac said. Being clubbed with 2022 World Cup hosts in the Asian qualifiers second round helps as a secondplace finish behind Qatar will see India in the third qualifying round. That is why the two home and away matches against the 87-ranked side, starting with the one at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, assume significance. The hosts were dealt a blow days before the opening match with young mid-fielder Amarjit Singh Kiyam being ruled out due to an injury. The 18-year-old, who captained India in the U-17 World Cup at home two years ago, was the only player who featured in all five matches since Stimac’s appointment. His absence in front of the defence, where Sandesh Jhingan is looking for a strong ally, will be missed. Jhingan is set

Indian players practice Guwahati. to have Rahul Bheke as partner with Pritam Kotal on the right and Subhasish Bose on the left. The ever-dependable Udanta Singh will man the mid-field alongside the young Sahal Abdul Samad, Anirudh Thapa and Lallianzuala Chhangte. With Stimac preferring a 4-2-3-1 formation instead of his predecessor Stephen Constantine’s 4-4-2, the 35-year-old Chhetri is set to be the lone

ahead of the qualifying match against Oman in man upfront with Ashique Kuruniyan playing behind one of international football’s leading scorers. Like India, Oman also have a new manager in Dutchman Erwin Koeman, who took his players to Germany for a threeweek conditioning camp while playing local sides. The 34-year-old midfielder Ahmed Kano will be a vital cog in the team that reached the Round of 16 in the Asian Cup earlier

this year. Koeman has also called up young striker Arshad Al Alawi, who was one of the standout stars of the 2016 AFC Under-16 Championships. The visitors’ midfield will be marshalled by Ahmed Mubarak and Ibrahim Saleh, with Mohammed Al-Ghassini playing upfront. India lost both their matches against Oman at the same stage during the qualification for the 2018 World Cup.

GPRN (Reformation) statement dated 29th August, in a section of daily papers implicating me for August 16th killing; where every one concerned ought to know the inside story of the unfortunate killing of Lt. Col. Toishe Yeptho NSCN (IM) which is still a mystery. It is very unfortunate and unprecedented which led the situation into very ugly turns which ultimately took a precious life. I also sincerely extend my condolence and share my grief to the grieving family members. It really shocked me when NSCN/GPRN (Reformation) government issued termination of my service when the case is still under investigation by law enforcing agency as well as all respective organisations. As of now I am out of station for treatment of my knee injury during the firing incident that took place at my residence on 20th August. The NSCN/GPRN (R) government should have set up inquiry committee and probe the case and dig out the truth. However, without taking up any interrogation nor confessional statement from me, how could the government accuse or implicate me in the crime without any substantial evidence. The NSCN/GPRN (R) government or any official competent authority must give me scope to prove my innocence; where I demand free and fair trial. The NSCN/GPRN(R) government should have not issued such blind statement before ascertaining factual investigation and penalising an innocent person which is not at all justified. Here, I would like to clarify to everyone concerned that as stated earlier in my last statement I once again reaffirm that I was not involved in the murder case of Lt. Col. Toishe Yeptho. Arriving at the conclusion, now the real culprits has been arrested after proper investigation by the investigating agency and the persons are in judicial custody. Therefore, it is so unrealistic and impractical to put my name and implicate me for the crime committed without knowing the truth; whereas, I also expect justice through free and fair trial. It is said “What the teacher is, is more important than what he teaches” Karl Menninger. The man whose life embodies this principle is Sir Hüsazü Epao, Principal, Patkai Christian College, who deserves to be greeted not just with verbal greetings but also with a note on this Teacher’s Day. His life defines and characterizes the meaning of the ideal teacher. God has indeed given a Gideon to Patkai. He is a man of valour and vigour, a man who has established his life and his principles on the Word of God. He is ever cool and calm all through the seasons, oftentimes he takes the leap of faith. He must be a fan of Peter for he likes to walk on water but doesn’t get frightened by the waves of the sea. Fixing his eyes on Jesus is surely the reason. A man of passion in regard to his profession, somebody who adores his subject beyond a reasonable doubt, consequently making it creep in and out in his teachings, preaching, and conversation. A dignified teacher, a noble educator who is able to manage his primary classroom (family & home) super well. One such example is portrayed in the beautiful sight on Sundays where Sir Epao sits beside his family in the first pew regularly drawing water from the living stream. God’s grace has kept his family well thus far. A compassionate father is he, fathering hundreds of children is no easy task yet faring tremendously. Not every teacher who heads knows the art and craft of explaining the meaning of firmness and kindness in the same tone, yet Sir Epao does. We are so blessed to be his children. We can confidently testify to the fact of the profound empathy he has towards his fellow beings. Should he face revilement anytime, his faith in God would say “God is there and in His grace time and deed will prove it someday”. A true teacher is he who teaches with his life. For all these and more, we are made to believe that Andy Rooney implied such a teacher as him when he said “Most of us end up with not more than five or six people who remember us. Teachers have thousands of people who remember them for the rest of their lives”. Yes Sir Epao, you will be remembered by thousands of people. Happy Teacher's Day! The Ngukhas. DP-6712 K Y M C

US Open: Dimitrov stuns Federer; Serena wins

(L)Grigor Dimitrov reacts after defeating Roger Federer. (R) Serena Williams returns a shot to Qiang Wang. (AP/PTI) Federer, 38, the oldest major quarter-finalist since a 39-year-old Jimmy Connors made the semi-finals of the 1991 US Open, made 61 unforced errors to only 41 for Dimitrov in the last-eight clash which kept fans to the edge of their seats. The Swiss converted only four of the 14 break points he earned. In the semi-final, Dimitrov will play in-form fifth seed Daniil Medvedev, who

defeated Stan Wawrinka 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 to become the youngest men’s semifinalist at the US Open since 2010.

Subroto Cup: Bangladesh, Mnp girls in U17 final

N e w Yo r k , S e p 4 (IANS): Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov made it to his maiden US Open semifinal after registering his first-ever win over Swiss legend Roger Federer in what turned out to be an epic quarter-final clash at the Flushing Meadows. In women’s singles, six-time champion Serena Williams eased into the semifinals with a straightset victory over Qiang

Wang of China at Arthur Ashe Stadium. On Tuesday night at the Arthur Ashe Stadium, Dimitrov came from two sets to one down and defeated the five-time champion 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 in a match that lasted more than three hours. The 28-year-old had never beaten the third seed in seven previous meetings, winning just two of 18 sets in those matchups.

Kim Ji Hyun with P.V. Sindhu. New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): P.V. Sindhu had recently scripted history as she lifted her maiden World Championships title after outclassing Japans Nozomi Okuhara in the final and India’s foreign badminton coach Kim Ji Hyun has termed the win as the ‘perfect execution’ of a strategy. Kim, a former South Korea coach, was with the Indian shuttler when she thrashed 2017 champion Okuhara 21-7 21-7 in one of the most lop-sided finals in the history of the tournament. “Perfect execution! I was so happy

(with) how she played!” Kim was quoted as saying by the Badminton World Federation (BWF). “I mean, yeah! That’s the way I play when I play against her. I feel over the moon because we did it!” Kim, who changed her name to Ji Hyun Marr, but is better known worldwide by her maiden name, was handed the responsibility to sharpen the skills of former world No.2 Sindhu with the World Championships and Olympics in mind. “I got the job offer and I decided to go. Five months later, we’ve got a world champion in Sindhu!,” said Kim, who was among the coaches sacked last September by the Badminton Korea Association for the national team’s failure to win medals at the Jakarta Asian Games. “She had more individual training. We worked on her net skills and deception for hours. Everyone knows she’s a great player but she was doing the same things over and over in matches,” added Kim. Meanwhile, Sindhu, who had undergone rigorous training under the South Korean coach, also showered praise on Kim and said they both share a good communication. “It has been good. I am happy with my performance. With Kim, I have a good communication,” Sindhu said. “She pointed out a few mistakes that I was doing at the net, and overall, so I had to improve on that aspect. Her mindset and thinking is different and she motivates me a lot. Every coach has a different approach and I got used to her quickly. She joined after All England, so it took some time to get used to her way. Now we understand each other well,” she added.

Serena grabs 100th US Open win

Serena Willimans, the 23-time Grand Slam champion was at her menacing best as she defeated Wang 6-1, 6-0 in just 44 minutes to register her 100th win at the Flushing Meadows.

New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): Bangladesh’s Krida Shiksha Pratisthan (BKSP) thrashed Tamil Nadus Government Girls High School 5-0 in the first semi-final of the Subroto Cup U17 girls category here on Wednesday. Aklima Khatun opened the scoring in the 7th minute before a four goal haul in six minutes saw Bangladesh race to a five goal lead by the 20th minute, thus effectively putting the game beyond Tamil Nadu’s reach. In the second semifinal, Manipur’s Nilmani English School squared off against Assam’s Simbargaon High School, where Manipur emerged 4-0 winners to book their place in the final. Three goals in five minutes towards the end of the first half saw Manipur going into half-time with a three goal cushion, before adding a fourth near the hour mark. The two sides will now meet on Friday at the Ambedkar Stadium for the final.

“It never crossed my mind that I would get to 100,” Williams said after the match. Such was the dominance of Williams in the match that she lost just 15 points. In the second set, Wang managed to win just four points. The American had 25 winners while Wang had none. The only game Wang won was the sixth. “I knew that I had to step it up or go home,” Williams said of her mindset coming into the match against Wang. “I want to stay here, so I knew that I needed to play really well.” Wang had upset reigning French Open champion and No. 2 Ashleigh Barty to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Williams will now face No. 5 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine on Thursday to remain on course of her 24th Grand Slam. Williams leads their head-tohead 4-1, but Svitolina did emerge victorious in their last meeting, which was a shock upset at the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro while Williams was World No.1.

Nagaland Post, Dimapur THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2019

CoA to appoint observers in 10 states including Nagaland New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): The Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) has decided to appoint observers for 10 state bodies to oversee the functioning of the associations, as well as to guide them in cricketing matters. The move has not gone down well with the associations and some of them have even questioned the board’s intent. The associations to have these observers are -- Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Sikkim, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Bihar, Chandigarh, Uttarakhand and Pondicherry. In a mail sent to the associations, accessed by IANS, the observers will be given six terms of reference and they will act in accordance: To obser ve and guide the SCA’s in cricket administration activities.

To obser ve and guide the cricket operations team in formulating local cricket activities To act as an observer in all the selection committee meetings. To assist the SCA in preparing youth development program for boys and girls. To act as a facilitator between the SCA and BCCI cricket operations team. To act as a facilitator between the SCA and BCCI finance observer,” the mail read. While the name of the observers appointed in this regard will be circu-

lated shortly, a senior BCCI official questioned if the Committee was looking to act beyond the scope of the newly registered constitution. “The collegium is not required. The CoA has given themselves the powers of the Supreme Court. Just because the court is busy with the Ram Janmabhoomi issue, the CoA has found it an opportune time to repeatedly run roughshod over the orders of the apex court. “This is just another in a long line of such decisions that have been taken in the last few weeks. “Under what provision of the BCCI constitution -- that has been finalized by the SC -- are they doing this? What gives them the authority to do this? They are playing with the orders of the court and they will be held accountable for this mess,” the official told IANS.

Shooting in CWG: Rijiju urges UK MP to intervene FIFA unveils 2022 Qatar WC emblem

Kiren Rijiju during a visit to the SAI Northern Regional Center, at Bahalgarh in Sonipat, Haryana, Wednesday. (PIB/PTI) New Delhi, Sep 4 (IANS): Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju has written a letter to Nicky Morgan, Member of Parliament in the UK, asking for her personal intervention to get shooting included in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to be held in Birmingham. In June, the executive board of the Common-

wealth Games Federation (CGF) had decided to exclude shooting from the 2022 Games, following which the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had threatened to boycott the event. In the letter dated September 3, Rijiju said the decision of the CGF executive board to exclude shooting is based on the

premise that shooting had never been a compulsory sport and there is no venue available for holding shooting events. “Unfortunately, at present, India is not represented in the Commonwealth Games executive council and in the functional committees of the Commonwealth Games. Therefore, it could not put

forward its case for the inclusion of shooting in 2022 Birmingham CWG,” the Sports Minister said in the letter addressed to Morgan, a Conservative Party member who is also the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. “As you are aware, the Commonwealth of Nations comprises 53 countries

with a population of 2.4 billion. India alone has more than half of this. India has always been a strong votary and supporter of the Commonwealth and would continue to be so. “The Indian public takes keen interest in shooting events involving Indian shooters. In a constructive gesture, the International Shooting Federation has offered to share the cost of inclusion of shooting in Birmingham CWG. I request your personal intervention in ensuring the continued inclusion of shooting in 2022 CWG,” he added. Earlier, CGF Chief Louise Martin had insisted that shooting will not be a part of the 2022 edition of the Games due to space constrains. Indian shooters bagged 16 medals, including seven gold, at last year’s Gold Coast Games where they finished in third place with 66 medals. It will be for the first time since 1974 that shooting won’t a part of the Commonwealth Games and only the second time since its first inclusion in 1966.

The Official Emblem of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 unveiled on the Burj Doha in Doha, Qatar. (Getty Images) Cairo, Sep 4 (IANS): FIFA and the Qatari organising committee have unveiled the official emblem for the 2022 World Cup in the Persian Gulf nation. When the clock struck 8.22 p.m. in Doha on Tuesday, a 3D projection of the logo appeared on giant screens and the surfaces of prominent buildings in Qatar and 24 other countries. “The swooping curves of the emblem represent the undulations of desert dunes and the unbroken loop depicts both the number eight - a reminder of the eight astonishing stadiums that will host matches - and the infinity symbol, reflecting

the interconnected nature of the event,” soccer’s world governing body said in a statement. In its shape, the logo resembles the World Cup trophy, reports Efe news. “The new typeface created to accompany the emblem re-imagines traditional Arabic calligraphy in a new, contemporary font, taking inspiration from the region and Asia, and fusing tradition with modernity,” the statement said. The logo was projected onto several structures in Doha and in Arab nations stretching from Kuwait to Morocco. The event, however, did not include Saudi

Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, all of which cut diplomatic relations with Qatar in 2017 and maintain a trade and transportation boycott of the gas-rich nation. Beyond the region, the World Cup 2022 emblem appeared on buildings and giant screens in New York, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Santiago, Mexico City, Johannesburg, London, Paris, Berlin, Milan, Madrid, Moscow, Mumbai, Seoul and 10 districts across Turkey. The 2022 World Cup will be the first to be played during winter -- a change necessitated by the fierce summer heat in Qatar.
