Nahdet el Mahrousa (NM), or "Renaissance of Egypt", seeks to make a positive and lasting impact on Egypt's cultural, economic, and social development by activating and engaging young Egyptians. Its goal is to create social impact through enabling entrepreneurs achieve financial independence and organizational improvement.

The Social Innovation Starts With YOU! Competition

WINNERS

Kherna.com is an online social platform for all good-cause organizations and individuals to communicate and keep track of all the new initiatives and activities.

Bosletak.com aims to unveil human potential through an online platform that helps Egyptian youth realize their potential and discover their appropriate educational and career paths.

The new and upgraded version of Kherna.com was launched in mid-January and was followed by a widespread off- and online campaign. The team is generating awareness of their brand and cause through viral videos, newsletters, their blog (http://blog.kherna.com/) and interviews with the media and corporations. Furthermore, NM sponsored a partnership between Kherna and P&G, IBM and PWC to develop an online corporate volunteerism platform Sharek.org. Kherna has also recruited an online presence manager to monitor their online growth and presence.

Bosletak has recently been registered as a company and launched their website, still in alpha testing, in mid-January. For a month prior the launch, Bosletak tested all its features in the Arabic and English version of the website; the interviews, articles, job shadowing events, forums and tests. Furthermore, Bosletak’s project leader, Ahmed El Noshokaty, was one of the top 50 finalists in Google Ebda2.

CORD is a social enterprise that aims to commercialize science by spreading awareness on marketable technology and the culture of smart entertainment.

CORDs activities across 4 governorates include: robot building competitions, technology awareness events, robot kit assembly and creating dynamic commercial products. Mashrou3 Al Mareekh (MM), previously known as “Project Yourself”, is an Egyptian movement dedicated to promoting selfexpression among young people.

MM has recently been touring Egypt from North to South whether on foot or in their caravan (Qafilat Al Mareekh) and has been collaborating with other self-expression movements to expand its reach. MM held 40 open mic sessions in Menya, Alexandria and Cairo and had its first commercial performance in Left Bank, Zamalek, Cairo. MM has hugely increased its exposure by collaborating with various LMO’s such as Alwan Wa Awtar ,El Fann Midan, Oyoon Art Group, Gudran (Alex), World Aids Festival, World Pneumonia Festival, Bikya, Busboys and poets (DC), Tahrir Monologues, the BUssy Project, HarrassMap, el-Azhar Park, Characters of Egypt Festival, Makers Fair Africa 2011, Mashrou3 madina (Alex), Moving Planet, Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies' and Al Andalus Center for Tolerance.

Loving Hearts (Omahat Badeela) Through adequate training and rehabilitation of orphanage workers, Omahat El Badeelat aims to address the problems related to low levels of training and capacity building offered to orphanage workers and foster care workers.

The team has launched its website and trained 20 foster care workers, is conducting the second phase of their trainings, and is working on an advocacy model to apply the model for orphanage trainers on a nationwide scale.

EgyptCarPoolers.com (ECP) is an initiative to promote the concept and benefits of carpooling in Egypt and provide an online platform to facilitate the process.

The team, with the help of Netservex, has launched a new, upgraded version of their website in both Arabic and English. Some of the new features include: Facebook integration, networks and events and a more user friendly design and process. ECP is working on a marketing campaign to target business compounds and residential districts such as 6th of October and Rehab. They’ve launched 3 advertising inserts in West Cairo, BCA Chronicle and Campus magazines, started a heavy campaign on Facebook and distributed flyers in 3 residential compounds in Sheikh Zayed to increase brand visibility.

Oyoon Art Group offers a safe and open space to promote education through art amongst Egyptian youth.

Oyoon Art Group has officially registered its company and is working closely with several organizations to raise awareness on civic engagement through art. Oyoon uses a number of tools to create the desired learning experience, including: documentaries, illustrations, animations, cartoons, shadow puppetry theatre, photography and filmmaking. Oyoon is also planning to own a cultural centre in Menya to conduct their art activities and workshops. The team has collaborated with renowned photographers such as Adel Waseely and art movements such as Mashrou3 Al Mareekh and Alwan Wa Awtar to conduct art activities and open mic sessions in Menya, Cairo and Alexandria. Oyoon also works closely with Save the Children UK and Cospe to organize self expression workshops in more than 45 schools combined in Menya and Beni Suef.

The Incubator of Social enterprises

The Young Innovators Awards Program aims to positively impact the scientific culture in Egypt, and to produce more equipped scientists in the future by helping undergraduate, graduate and PhD students gain access to training, funding, information, equipment, and supplies that may better meet the needs of their research projects at Egyptian national universities In 2011-2012 YIA renewed sponsorship agreements with Sawiris Foundation for Social Development, Sadko Group, Research Development and Innovation Programme, Al Korra Foundation, and Mobinil. YIA have also expanded its targeted faculties to include 11 Computer and Information faculties. YIA now serves a total of 78 faculties that include Engineering, Agriculture, Science, and Computer and Information faculties in 19 national universities. We at the YIA are also proud to announce that we are on the verge of launching an online submission and evaluation portal in partnership with Egypt Scholars 2020

The Misriyati program focuses on promoting the values of tolerance, peace and diversity among young Egyptians through an innovative curriculum. The project has an established curriculum and teaching methodology. At the end of each cycle of workshops, participants are requested to brainstorm on means of contributing to their communities.

Misriyati is just returning from a fun and fruitful Team Retreat, where we also enjoyed the presence and contributions of members of NM’s incubator, Nabta, and Nawaya! We are coming back with some ideas, but also, with the realization of the importance of collaboration and partnerships with different entities and projects!

Career Entrepreneurship & Development Office (CEDO) bridging the gap between the outcomes of the educational system and needed input for the job market. The office provides a fair chance to youth for capacity building, empowerment, and career advancement.

In partnership with Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and Cairo University, the Career and Entrepreneurship Development Office has celebrated the graduation of 200 graduates of “Youth Enhancement and Job Creation” scholarship in Cairo University on March 8th, 2012. The program created job opportunities for 150 scholars in different fields. CEDO is implementing the second phase of the scholarship, as 200 fresh graduates are engaged in the training courses.

CEDO is organizing the Cairo University Faculty of Engineering 17th Employment Fair, on May 9th 2012. The fair not only aims to support companies to fill their vacancies with the best qualifications and skills available, but also to expose students/graduates on how to enhance their capabilities and skills to fit jobs available in the market. In addition, CEDO organizes a banquet of job hunting, CV writing, job search techniques, and interviewing skills sessions to build capacities of the employment fair visitors.

NM Partnerships SALON EL MAHROUSA On The Toshka ‘New River Valley’ project Since the dawn of industrialization, many regimes have taken on massive public works, projects which seem impressive or farfetched.

Usually these projects are written off as over ambition, but the initial motivations for beginning they are rarely addressed. The Toshka ‘New River Valley’ project is one such project. Despite it being Egypt’s largest development project costing over six billion pounds and promising to be home to 20% of the Egypt’s population, it has not really met its desired goals, or has it?

Political Economy of Development in the transitional period Egypt and Indonesia compared What are Egyptians to think and expect when queried about the development question; the direction, phases and pace? How can we get through this unstable scene with a minimum negative effect on long term development potentials? What are the effects of the post colonial policies in combination with economic nationalism, putting in consideration the stated building complexities? Highlighting authoritarianism and economic liberalization; how to put a strategy for an economic agenda for the future?

The International Youth Foundation and Nahdet El Mahrousa in partnership with The MasterCard Foundation are implementing Egypt@Work. This four year program will collaborate with local implementing partners to provide 10,000 disadvantaged youth with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities needed to find and maintain employment or to start new enterprises In its first phase, the program contracted two NGOs, Alashanek Ya Balady for Social Development (AYB) and New Horizon Association for Sustainable Development. AYB has started its field work and the team has visited them in Cairo, Luxor, Qena, and El Menya. New Horizon also started recruiting it’s beneficiaries in El Wadi el Gedid for training on organic farming, composting and cheese making. We have also shortlisted and met various NGOs (from El Menya, El Fayoum, Borg Al Arab, Assiut and EL Arish) after launching our General RFA. E@W is currently in the selection process of the finalist for the 2nd round of funding. Moreover, we have finalized the 1st stage of our interviews for the Labour Market Assessment and are on our way to start the 2nd stage during which we plan on meeting employers in our identified sectors.

CEDO National Program Management Unit (NPMU) The CEDO National Program will serve as the national umbrella for all Career Entrepreneurship & Development Offices in Egypt. It will also serve as a hub for different resources that are to be shared among the different CEDOs to fill the dire need to bridge the gap between education and employment.

CEDO National Program Management Unit (NPMU) has started replicating and scaling up of the CEDO model in Egyptian National Universities by signing MOU with Assiut University to establish CEDO office in faculty of science at the university campus. Assiut University CEDO is only one from several to follow as the NPMU is currently in the process of establishing CEDO offices in Menia, Zagazig and Sohag universities to provide career support and development services to university students and graduates.

MEET THE NEWLY ELECTED NM BOARD

Mohamed Nada

Mohamed Nada has over fourteen years of professional experience in participatory governance, socio-economic research, organizational capacity building, and youth and women’s empowerment. Worked in Egypt and abroad and interacted with international/local NGOs, and multinational corporations. His field of interest includes strategic and participative planning, governance and accountability approaches, social justice, human rights, and civil society strengthening.

Dr. Nada is currently the Project Manager and Advisor on Decentralization for the Strategic National Support Development project which is implemented by the UN-Habitat in Egypt. Prior to joining the UN-Habitat, Dr. Nada worked for CARE International as the Program Director for the Governance and Civic Engagement program.

He has also undertaken a wide range of consultancy assignments to the USAID, World Bank, DFID, ESDF, and other donors and international organizations, through his work as a senior researcher at the socio economic research department of Environmental Quality International.

Ahmed Tolba

Ahmed Tolba is Assistant Professor of Marketing, School of Business at the American University in Cairo. He is also the Director of El-Khazindar Business Research and Case Center (KCC), which is the first center in the Middle East and North Africa region that focuses on developing world-class refereed case studies. He was awarded his Ph.D. from the George Washington University in 2006; his MBA & B.Sc. from AUC in 1997 & 2001 respectively. His research focuses on Brand Equity, Innovation Marketing, Online Marketing, Nation Branding, Social Marketing and Entrepreneurship. He published in leading academic journals and conferences.

He taught a variety of courses at the George Washington University (GWU) and the AUC at both undergraduate and MBA levels.

He conducted various Marketing training programs to local and regional clients in for several institutions, covering the topics of Marketing Management, Marketing Research, Strategic Brand Management, Marketing Strategy, Integrated Marketing Communications, and Entrepreneurship..

His professional experience includes four years at Procter & Gamble Egypt. He was also responsible for several internal training and development programs, such as Leadership, Individual Effectiveness, and Finance for Non-Finance Managers. He also acted as a consultant for several local firms including Wadi Degla (Marketing Director), Net Signature, El-Rashad Asset Management, GMC, Taki, and Engineering Consultants Group (ECG); among others.

Rania A. Al‐Mashat

Mohamed Shehab

An Egyptian national, is currently Assistant Sub‐Governor and Head of the Monetary Policy Department at the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE). She has played a pivotal role in modernizing Egypt's monetary policy framework by providing monetary policy analysis, assessment, and communication through a research role in modeling among other responsibilities. Prior to joining the CBE, she was a Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. She covered a number of emerging Asian economies, including India and Vietnam, with research focused on monetary policy formulation and transmission. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park, USA in 2001. Her fields of specialization are applied macroeconomics and monetary policy.

She has a number of publications in these areas. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Economics at the American University in Cairo (AUC), a Research Fellow at the Economic Research Forum for Arab countries, Iran and Turkey, and an Executive Board member of the Arab Investment Bank. She is an AUC alumni class of 1995.

Mohamed Shehab is currently an independent consultant and a lecturer in the fields of Leadership Development, Conflict Resolution and Negotiation. He is also a partner in the Middle East Trading Agencies (META), an Egyptian company with more than thirty years experience in international trade and textile industries. In 2003 he started AL-SHEHAB trading company and in 2004 he founded AL-SONBOLAH for textile industries. He worked with and/or advised major organizations including The Institute for International Mediation and Conflict Resolution in Washington DC, the International Peace and Security Institute in Washington DC, Fulbright, FORD Foundation, AMISEAST, the American University in Cairo, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, IBM, Vodafone, Siemens, Shell, GAPCO, British Petroleum, British Gas, Abercrombie & Kent.

Between 2004 & 2010 he lectured at the Institute for Peace Studies in Alexandria, the Canadian International College and at the Modern Sciences and Arts University (MSA), teaching Conflict Resolution, Negotiation, and International Relations.

He is a co-founder of Nahdet El-Mahrousa, a leading NGO incubating social entrepreneurs and social ventures targeting economic and social development issues in Egypt. He is also the founding Curator of the Global Shapers Community- Cairo Hub, a sister organization of the World Economic Forum. He holds a Masters degree in International Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, USA, a Diploma in Negotiation and Conflict Resolution from Erasmus University in the Netherlands and bachelor degree in Business Administration from Helwan University in Egypt.

Ehaab Abdou

Loay El Shawarby

Ehaab Abdou is co-founder of Nahdet El Mahrousa. He is also co-founder and Board member of the Egyptian Federation of Youth NGOs. In 2004, Ehaab was selected as a "social entrepreneur” by the global Ashoka Foundation and hence became an Ashoka fellow. In 1999, Ehaab helped establish, and became the first president of, Fat’het Kheir. In 1995, as an AUC student, he was elected as the president of AIESEC in Egypt. In August 2007, he was honored by AIESEC, by awarding him the "Global AIESEC Alumni Entrepreneurship and Leadership Award". Since 2011, Ehaab was appointed as an Advisor to the Development Market (DM) Place, World Bank institute to develop Egypt's DM. Earlier, Ehaab worked as an Advisor to the Middle East Youth Initiative at the Wolfensohn Center for Development at the Brookings Institute leading its social entrepreneurship program for the Arab region. Between 1997 and 2002, he worked as the Partnership and Business Development officer at Canada’s International Development Research Center (IDRC), the Near East Foundation (NEF) Middle East and North Africa regional offices and the Nestle food company in Egypt. In 2004, Ehaab earned his master’s degree in international development from the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Ehaab received his undergraduate degree in management from the American University in Cairo in 1997.

Of-Counsel with Zaki Hashem & Partners, practicing in the areas of international trade and competition laws. In 2004-2005, Mr. El-Shawarby was as a visiting fellow with the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington, D.C. His research interests at CSIS focused on WTO accession and post compliance issues for Middle Eastern countries, as well as U.S. FTAs in the region. Mr. El-Shawarby’s earlier legal career (20002004) included advising on investment issues in the Middle East, contracts, and international commercial arbitration.

Mr. El-Shawarby maintains ties to the business community through serving on advisory boards and/or boards of directors. Currently he sits on the board of directors Nebras Technologies, B2LS Consulting, and El-Shawarby Trading Company.

Education: LL.M. in International Legal Studies with a concentration in International Trade Law, Georgetown University (2004), where he was elected president of the foreign lawyers’ class (roughly 200 students); Graduate Diploma in Islamic Studies with a focus on Islamic Law and Jurisprudence, the American University in Cairo (2000); LL.B., Cairo University (2000); and a B.A. in Political Science and European World History, the American University in Cairo (1994).

Ayman Ismail

Ayman Ismail is the Assistant Professor and Abdul Latif Jameel Endowed Chair of Entrepreneurship at the American University in Cairo School of Business. His research focuses on entrepreneurship; venture capital and private equity in emerging markets; economic development in the Middle East; industrial strategy; international technology diffusion and knowledge transfer to developing countries; technology policy and innovation; energy and food security; and political economy of development.

Dr. Ismail is a former Research Fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government in Harvard University. He received his PhD in International Economic Development from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

He also holds a bachelor degree in engineering and an MBA from the American University in Cairo, and a master in city planning and geographic information systems from MIT. He is also a co-founder and Managing Partner in Enovio, a management & strategy consulting firm operating in the US and the Middle East.

Prior to that, he was a consultant in McKinsey & Company’s Business Technology Office, based in New York for several years. Dr. Ismail has advised senior management in leading Fortune 100 companies, fastgrowing startups, government agencies, and non-profits on key organization, operations and technology issues. He has also consulted and conducted research for international organizations such as the World Bank and UNCTAD, as well as multiple US government agencies. Dr. Ismail has a broad multidisciplinary experience in economic development, business strategy, city planning and technology based on professional practice and academic research.

Ihab Ismail

Ihab Ismail is Co-Founder and Managing Director at Enovio Consulting. He has advised clients in utility, energy, construction, healthcare, automotive and information technology industries on issues of strategic alignment, capability building, execution planning and excellence, program and project management, and business start-ups.

Ihab provides a unique interdisciplinary education and experience that is instrumental in structuring and coordinating highly specialized consulting groups with diverse knowledge base.

Before he co-founded Enovio, Ihab was the Manager of Engineering and Risk Manager for Turner Construction Company in Michigan for several years, where he received the Turner Award for service excellence.

Earlier, he was a legal consultant for Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone in the USA. He was also a consultant in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Middle East.

Ihab is also an Executive Board Member of the Construction Innovation Forum, where has been a reviewer and investigator for the prestigious NOVA award for innovation sciences for the past seven years. He is founder of the Arab Student Association at the University of Michigan.

Ihab has a PhD (ABD) in Organizational Strategy and Capability Building from the University of Michigan. Mohamed Aly A.Fattah, PhD, CCT (Certified Corporate Trainer) has 15 years of corporate experience in the fields of Strategic Planning & Time Management, Leadership & Organizational Development, and Online Marketing. He is an active member in the American Organizational Development Network, the British Trainers-Base Association, & Egyptian Management Consultants Association. Dev. Consultant of SOLVAY, BRISK, & ProSoft Info Systems. He has given more than 250 successful lectures & corporate trainings in the fields of Strategic Planning, Org Development, Time Management, Leadership, & Training Trainers, in Egypt, the Arab Gulf, & UK (5000+ trainees).

Mohamed is currently a distinguished Lecturer of Strategic Management & Organizational Behavior for MBA & Graduate Diploma Students at the School of Business at American University in Cairo and Edinburgh School of Business of Herriot Watt University. This is in addition of being the general facilitator of the AUC Management Center Development Committee. EGYPTIANS WHO MAKE US PROUD Smart Breadboard graduation project team won the ICT championship in I2P (idea to product) global competition that took place in November 2011 held in Stockholm – Sweden. The team won first place competing with teams from Denmark, Germany and USA. A group of eight Egyptians from Helwan University thought of a brilliant idea and decided to pursue it in their senior year as their graduation project. Their path to success started when they were chosen by the Young Innovators’ Awards (YIA) program in 2011 and were given technical and financial support to bring their idea to life.

The main concept of the smart breadboard is to connect the components of an electronic circuit without the need of using bridges and wires. The old method of wiring connections arises the problems of complexity, inefficiency, unreliability and wasting time and efforts. The concept project eliminated these problems of manual connections, which provides flexibility and ease of connection. It will be interfaced to the computer via USB connection so that it can be controlled through customized software.

In Addition to winning the YIA and the I2P Competitions in 2011, the team is nominated to compete in the first MIT Business Plan Competition in Turkey and the Global Venture Labs Investment Competition (VLIC) in Texas, in 2012.

Ayman Ismail, NM co-founding and board Member, and assistant professor of management in the School of Business and AUC alumnus, has been selected by the Forum of Young Global Leaders (YGLs) as one of two Egyptian influential and inspirational figures for the year. This recognition is annually granted by the World Economic Forum to honor the most distinguished young leaders nominated below the age of 40 from around the world.
