Learnings from Observatorium

Een observatorium is een plek voor de waarneming van het heelal. De kunstenaars van Observatorium echter, richten hun blik op de bewoonde wereld. Ze creëren kunstwerken over de hele wereld waar je niet alleen naar kijkt, maar die je kunt betreden, om te observeren en te re ecteren. De afgelopen dertig jaar realiseerde Observatorium een internationaal belangwekkend oeuvre, van de sculptuur Zandwacht in de Haven van Rotterdam tot Dwelling in Seclusion, het kunstwerk voor afzondering in New York.

De kunstwerken zijn zinnebeelden van hun omgeving, of dat nu een woonwijk in transitie is of een industrieel landschap dat wordt omgevormd tot natuurgebied, en zijn bedoeld om bezoekers en omwonenden te helpen met het vinden van betekenis en toekomstperspectief in deze veranderingen.

Public Art for Public Life is een overzichtspublicatie waarin Observatorium op zoek gaat naar de resultaten, betekenis en lessen van hun oeuvre op de grens van architectuur, sculptuur en landschap. Hierbij spelen het maakproces, tijdelijkheid, integratie in veranderende (stads) landschappen, publieksparticipatie en verbeelding de hoofdrollen. Het resultaat is een boek vol inspirerende voorbeelden van de kracht van kunst voor de openbare ruimte. An observatory is a place for the observation of the universe. The artists of Observatorium, however, cast their gaze upon the inhabited world. All over the planet, they have created works of art that are not only to look at, but also to enter, observe and re ect from. Over the past 30 years, Observatorium produced an internationally signi cant body of work, from the sculpture Zandwacht (Sand Watch) in the Port of Rotterdam to Dwelling in Seclusion, a work of art devoted to solitude in New York.

The works of art are emblematic of their surroundings, whether they are in a residential area in transition or an industrial landscape that is being transformed into a nature reserve, and are intended to help visitors and local residents nd meaning and a future in these changes.

Public Art for Public Life is a summary publication in which the members of Observatorium are searching for the results, signi cance and lessons of their body of work on the interface between architecture, sculpture and landscape. Key issues are the creative process, temporality, integration in changing (urban) landscapes, public participation and imagination.
