Lucio Fontana (1899 – 1968) is een van de belangrijkste avant-garde kunstenaars van de twintigste eeuw en nog steeds een inspiratiebron voor kunstenaars, ontwerpers en architecten. Hij is bekend om zijn iconische monochrome schilderijen met verticale snedes. Lucio Fontana - De Verovering van de ruimte belicht de ideeën van Fontana’s Concetto spaziale en laat zien hoe deze ruimtelijke opvattingen niet alleen in zijn doorboorde doeken gestalte kregen, maar ook in zijn sculptuur, sieraden en installaties.

Voor Fontana bestond er geen principieel onderscheid tussen beeldende kunst, architectuur en design: hij was van huis uit beeldhouwer en liet zich in zijn opvattingen over ruimte niet begrenzen door disciplines. Zo was hij een van de eerste beeldende kunstenaars die ruimtelijke installaties maakte met zwevende sculpturen en neonlicht, en samenwerkte met architecten en ontwerpers.

Met fotogra e door Anuschka Blommers en Niels Schumm, en teksten van Colin Huizing en Paulo Campiglio is deze publicatie een onmisbaar overzicht van Fontana’s vernieuwende ruimtelijke opvattingen voor de kunst. Lucio Fontana (1899-1968) is one of the most important avant-garde artists of the twentieth century and continues to inspire artists, designers and architects. He is known for his iconic monochromatic paintings with vertical cuts. Lucio Fontana: The Conquest of Space highlights the ideas of Fontana's Concetto spaziale and shows how these spatial notions took shape not only in his slashed canvases, but also in his sculpture, jewellery and installations.

For Fontana, there was no fundamental distinction between the visual arts, architecture and design: he was a sculptor by trade and did not allow himself to be limited by disciplines in his conception of space. He was one of the rst visual artists to create spatial installations with oating sculptures and neon lights, and to collaborate with architects and designers.
