What RE-ST is doing with its wanderspace narrative is cleverly putting us in our place.

It’s time for humanity to clean its room. We’ve made a mess. We can make do with what we have. In fact, what we have is far more than we really need. What we’re suffering from is cognitive dissonance: we refuse to see our ‘excesses’. RE-ST is inviting us to develop a renewed sense of humility in the throes of our own anthropocentric hunger, greed and pride, and to more effectively utilise what we already have. Too often we look without seeing, use without realising.

In their work, RE-ST referred to the song ‘Laat ons een bloem’ (Leave us a flower) by Louis Neefs – a song that is finally being recognised for its message. It was released in 1970; I was twelve years old and had just started secondary school. I remember the song leaving a deep impression on me and my classmates. It warned us that we were straying down a dangerous path: ‘We were destroying our natural surroundings for profit’. Not much has changed in the 45 years since that song was written.

Although… I am starting to see a glimmer of hope on the horizon. There is considerably more support and the problem has a much more prominent place on the agenda than I could have ever hoped. Designers have also stepped down from their ivory towers to work on creating a more liveable society that respects the ecosystem we were all born from. I cannot imagine anything more relevant than this…

RE-ST refereerde in hun werk naar het lied ‘Laat ons een bloem’ van Louis Neefs, een lied dat eindelijk terug zijn terechte plaats krijgt.

Het verscheen in 1970 toen ik 12 jaar oud was en begon aan de middelbare school. Het heeft mij en mijn klasgenoten destijds echt geëngageerd en gekleurd. Het vertelde ons: ‘We zijn niet goed bezig, we doen alles de verdoemenis ingaan’.

De situatie is sindsdien, meer dan 45 jaar geleden, niet veel verbeterd. Hoewel… Vandaag zie ik het begin van de kentering wel ontstaan. Er is nu veel meer draagvlak, de problematiek staat op veel meer plaatsen op de agenda dan ik ooit had durven hopen. Ook ontwerpers zijn uit hun ivoren design-toren afgedaald om te werken aan het heruitvinden van een meer leefbare maatschappij met respect voor het ecosysteem waar wij allen uiteindelijk de kinderen van zijn. Ik kan me moeilijk voorstellen dat er iets is dat nog meer relevantie zou hebben…

Wat RE-ST met zijn verhaal rond zwerfruimte eigenlijk doet, is ons op een intelligente manier op ons nummer zetten. De mensheid moet haar kamer opruimen. We hebben rommel gemaakt.

We kunnen het eigenlijk al doen met wat we hebben. Dat wat we al hebben is veel te veel in vergelijking met wat we echt nodig hebben.

We hebben last van cognitieve dissonantie, we willen het ‘teveel’ niet zien. RE-ST nodigt ons uit om in de plooien van onze eigen antropo­ centrische honger, onze eigen hebzucht en hoog­moed, opnieuw nederigheid te ontwikkelen, gewoon om meer én beter te doen met wat we al tot onze beschikking hebben. We kijken te vaak zonder te zien, we gebruiken te vaak zonder te beseffen.

WHO IS RE-ST? How can we inspire a shift? This is the question that inspired us to start our firm exactly ten years ago and it is still the driving force behind our work to this day. How can we keep cool in a building culture that is threatening to over­ heat? Our core focus as architects is to find a way to help shape the spatial debate instead of simply enduring it.

For this reason, our firm devotes itself to both research and design. We eagerly trade our drawing board for the pen every now and then.

Through publications we take on the debate about how society should interact with its environment. In the slipstream of the financial crisis of 2008, we expanded our practice of building with the practice of not-building.

In 2014, with the support of the Dutch Incentive Fund for Architecture, we conducted a study on ‘the value of not-building’, which basically means finding solutions to spatial challenges within the existing space that is still available to us. We combined several real-life examples which helped us identify ten tactics of notbuilding: intensive use of space; combined use of space; demolition; restoration and renovation; repurposing; splitting or merging; temporary and interim use of space; reversible use of space; deliberately not using space; and cleaning up. While these tactics are not new, their deliberate inclusion in an integrated strategy may allow for their more effective deployment by all players in the building process in the search for spatial solutions.

Om die reden bevindt onze praktijk zich permanent zowel in ontwerp- als onderzoek­modus. We houden ervan om van achter onze tekentafel uit te komen en ook onze schrijvende pen vast te nemen. Onder andere met publicaties mengen we ons in de discussie over hoe we als maat­ schappij willen omgaan met onze omgeving.

In de slipstream van de financiële crisis in 2008 hebben we de praktijk van het bouwen uitgebreid met de praktijk van het niet-bouwen. Met steun van het Stimuleringsfonds voor Architectuur (NL) voerden we in 2014 een onderzoek naar ‘de winst van het niet-bouwen’, dat zoveel betekent als het oplossen van ruimtelijke behoeften binnen het bestaande ruimtelijke aanbod. We bundelden meerdere praktijkvoorbeelden die ons leidde tot het benoemen van tien tactieken van het niet-bouwen: intensief ruimtegebruik, meervoudig ruimtegebruik, slopen, restaureren/renoveren, herbestemmen, splitsen/samenvoegen, tijdelijk en tussentijds ruimtegebruik, omkeerbaar ruimtegebruik, bewust niet gebruiken en tot slot opruimen. Deze tactieken zijn op zich niet nieuw maar door ze bewust samen te benoemen in een geïntegreerde strategie kunnen ze wellicht beter en bewuster ingezet worden door alle actoren in een bouwproces in de zoektocht naar oplossingen voor een ruimtelijke vraag.

Wat rest ons? Met deze vraag begon onze praktijk exact tien jaar geleden, en nog steeds vormt ze de drijfveer achter ons dagelijks werk. Hoe kunnen we de rust bewaren in een oververhitte bouw­cultuur?

De integrale zoektocht naar hoe we als architecten het ruimtelijke debat terug mee kunnen bepalen in plaats van het te ondergaan, staat centraal.

The question of how to deal with our surplus of built environment remains an integral part of our work. Critically reflecting on our spatial behaviour has become consciously and subconsciously ingrained the DNA of our cultural design firm. In our projects, we always explore the questions behind the question.

RE-ST is a firm with a mission. Like any business, it will cease to exist when the mission is complete. But the end does not seem to be in sight anytime soon.

WHY THIS PUBLICATION?

Introduction

This publication can be seen as an extension of our daily practice and our ongoing research on wanderspace. Our environment is teeming with un(der)utilised wanderspace at a multitude of levels. We continue to create space despite lacking any data on the utilisation of the space we already have. In 2018, deSingel in Antwerp hosted an exhibition on this theme. On display were twelve of our projects in which we proposed using the available, un(der)utilised space to meet the need for more space.

The need for a spatial clean-up is becoming urgent. We are gradually realising that we are consuming space at an unsustainable rate and that our attitude is not future-proof. In this respect, shifting our focus to the use of existing space is increasingly important. Until we expand our view on how space can be used, the amount of wanderspace will only increase.

However, the solution will largely lie in reorganising and making more efficient use of what we already have.

De vraag hoe om te gaan met het teveel aan gebouwde omgeving is vandaag nog steeds verstrengeld met een groot deel van ons werk.

Het kritisch reflecteren over ons ruimtelijk gedrag is bewust en onbewust het DNA van de culturele ontwerp­praktijk RE-ST geworden. In onze projecten gaan we telkens op zoek naar de vraag in de vraag.

RE-ST is een onderneming met een missie. Zoals elke onderneming kan ze ophouden te bestaan wanneer deze is uitgevoerd. Maar dat punt lijkt voorlopig nog niet meteen in zicht.

WAAROM DEZE PUBLICATIE?

De noodzaak aan het ruimtelijk opruimen dringt zich op. Stilaan is er een groeiend besef dat de huidige ruimteconsumptie onhoudbaar is en onze houding niet toekomstbestendig. In dat opzicht wordt het omgaan met het bestaande ruimtebeslag steeds belangrijker. Momenteel hebben we een te beperkte blik op hoe we ruimte kunnen gebruiken, waardoor het aanbod aan zwerf­ruimte alleen maar toeneemt. Toch

Deze publicatie kan gezien worden als verleng­ stuk van onze dagelijkse praktijk en het lopende onderzoek naar zwerfruimte. Onze omgeving bulkt van de zwerfruimte, on(der)benutte ruimte, op heel veel verschillende schaalniveaus. We blijven ruimte bij creëren, en dit terwijl we nauwelijks data hebben over het gebruik van dat wat er al is. In 2018 opende in deSingel te Antwerpen een ten­toon­ stelling rond dit thema. Hier toonden we twaalf eigen projecten waarin een opdracht of vraag naar bijkomende ruimte, benaderd werd door eerst de aanwezige on(der) benutte ruimte aan te spreken.

This publication delves deeper into the results from the exhibition. Practical examples from the past decade are described and insights are shared. The text calls for society to seize the opportunity to identify and activate underutilised space and put it on the agenda as an urgent spatial need. It is a first step in the search for a much-needed spatial diet.

WHO ARE THE AUTHORS? RE-ST is the curator of this publication.

We asked Tine Hens to position wanderspace within the wider perspective. Tine unpacks this theme in twelve chapters, making regular reference to our design projects. Roel De Ridder reflects on the relevance of RE-ST as an architecture firm and positions wander­ space within the framework of architectural history. The metaphorical texts by Jee Kast provide an artistic translation of this theme. As a word artist, he compares our spatial behaviour and hoarding tendencies to a simple coffee cup. The introduction is by the former Flemish Government Architect Leo Van Broeck.

RE-ST is curator van deze publicatie. Enerzijds stelden we de vraag aan Tine Hens om zwerf­ ruimte in een breder perspectief te kaderen. In twaalf hoofdstukken probeert Tine het thema te doorgronden en verwijst ze bij regelmaat naar projecten uit onze ontwerppraktijk. Roel De Ridder reflecteert over de relevantie van RE-ST als architectuurpraktijk en plaatst het agenderen van zwerfruimte in een architectuurhistorisch kader.

Aanvullend bieden de metaforische teksten van Jee Kast een artistieke vertaling van het thema. Als woordkunstenaar vergelijkt hij ons ruimtelijk gedrag en de oneindige verzamelzucht met een alledaagse koffiekop. De inleiding is van de voormalige Vlaams Bouwmeester Leo Van Broeck.

Doelbewust omgaan met ruimte is bij uitstek een kans en uitdaging voor alle welvarende delen van de wereld. Het ruimtelijk stoppen met groeien en terugplooien op het huidige ruimtebeslag is een internationale opdracht. De transitie van een lineaire naar een circulaire bouwcultuur bepaalt de agenda van iedereen die de volgende jaren en decennia met ruimte bezig is. Why do we build more than we need?

While open spaces are becoming more and more scarce, we continue to overlook the possibilities of what has already been built. With this publication RE-ST puts the needless growth of the existing patrimony on the agenda.

Wanderspace is built and unbuilt space that we have produced together but underutilized on a daily basis.

Space that is present everywhere and nowhere on different scales. Nobody knows how much it is exactly. Detecting, mapping and activating wanderspace is a task and opportunity for the architect.

Do not spill in houses, but in designs to re-use what is there and only build if there is no other option.

Waarom bouwen we meer dan we nodig hebben? Terwijl onze open ruimte schaarser wordt, hebben we nauwelijks oog voor de mogelijkheden van wat er al gebouwd is. Met deze publicatie agendeert RE-ST de nodeloze groei van het aanwezige patrimonium. Zwerfruimte is gebouwde en onbebouwde ruimte die we samen geproduceerd hebben maar dagelijks onderbenutten. Ruimte die op verschillende schalen overal en nergens aanwezig is. Niemand weet hoeveel het er precies is. In het detecteren, het in kaart brengen en activeren van zwerfruimte ligt een taak ĂŠn kans voor de architect. Niet in huisjes morsen, maar in ontwerpen aan de herbestemming van wat er is en pas bouwen als het echt niet anders kan.
