Program Structure The AIET Program is specifically designed for international instructors who seek to learn English and subsequently teach in English.
One of the primary benefits of the training program is that instructors need to have little or basic proficiency in English, as the program begins language instruction from the very basic level of English language proficiency.
The program may be taken in both full-time and part-time formats. In both formats, students begin by
taking up to four courses in the Core ESL program, which takes students from a beginner to advanced level of proficiency. Thereafter, students may elect to participate in the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Program, or the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program.

The duration of the program is dependent on the candidate’s previous English proficiency level, time availability, and their future career paths and goals. Prior to enrollment in the AIET program, all candidates will be given a comprehensive English proficiency test to determine appropriate placement. The following chart demonstrates the expected graduation time for applicable candidate. Please include an extra four weeks in overall duration of full-time course, and an extra 8 weeks in the overall duration of part-time courses to accommodate public holidays and administrative gap days between courses.

Overview of Curriculum
Duration Schedule
Placement The first stage of the AIET Program is to become trained to acquire a suitable level of language proficiency for instructing courses in English. In accordance to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB), this is considered to benchmark 8/9, which is an advanced level of standing. To compare the CLB with other competency standards, please see the following chart:

As such, the Core ESL program consists of four successive courses, each designed to help students consecutively advance in English language receptive and communicative skills to an advanced level of standing. The course descriptions are as follows: 1. ESL 100: a beginner’s course in which students are introduced to the foundations of the English language through the context of immediate everyday social situations. 2. ESL 200: an upper-level course in which students further develop and enhance their working knowledge of critical communication by exploring more complex themes and grammatical concepts. 3. ESL 300: an intermediate course in which students work to refine control of complex grammar, vocabulary and language skills which serve to solidify and strengthen English fluency through an understanding of formal communication. 4. EAP 400: an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course which places an emphasis on skills development and subject knowledge through an exploration of the implicit and explicit themes, purposes and ideas of complex academic written and oral communication.

Additional Considerations Oxford College is committed to high academic and professional standards. It is important to note that all full-time courses presented in this education guide are intensive in nature. The hours described per course are in-class hours only, and students are expected to study approximately 1 – 2 hours per night after being dismissed from class. In addition to being intensive, the courses are also fast-paced; as such, if students show evidence of falling behind or failing to consistently finish all tasks that are assigned, they may be removed from the program and it will be recommended that they attend the part-time program. It is necessary that students receive a mark of 90% or higher to demonstrate completion of each course, and be deemed eligible for advancement to the next course in the program. In the interest of time and space, curriculum, syllabi, and course materials have not been included in the education guide, but are available for examination and analysis upon request.
