Publisher’s Note

2013

A

s I sit down to write a note to you, our loyal readers, I am stuffed and sleepy. Thanksgiving has come and the holidays are officially in full swing. The weather has finally turned cold and I am ready to bundle up in front of the fireplace with hot chocolate and Nat King Cole belting tunes in the air. I get so excited knowing that Holiday parties are coming, large family gatherings are ramping up and sparkling gifts are coming. I get to pull out my cute fancy purses and holiday dresses. Not sure what to wear? Check out our fantastic guide to dressing smart and sexy for any event during this time of year. It’s a must have for all you downtown gals and uptown guys. Ladies there is no outfit that is complete without the perfect nail color. Metallic and Jewel tone hues are a hit this season. Before heading out the door have you ever wondered how close you are to crossing the line between looking like a brightly lit tree topper and a sophisticated elegantly dressed woman? Makeup is key! Knowing how to apply your makeup is essential. Drinking holiday cocktails can leave you a little tipsy; learn the tricks of the trade to walk out of your event looking the same way you walked in. This month has been a flurry! I don’t know if it’s the short days or if its all the amazing people that we have had the pleasure of meeting. Either way I am so excited to share what we have done! First, our cover is sizzling with Marvin Cortes, the sweetheart of America’s Next Top Model. We had a chance to go on an LA adventure with Marvin through the Graffiti Arts District. This happy go lucky, humble man from the Bronx melted our hearts. His upbringing and gracious attitude made us instant fans! Catch the whole interview inside and the behind the scenes video on our website. And as if we didn’t hit a high note on that check out the very cool interview with Astraea. This funky fun fresh girl from San Diego will make you want to dance! She is so super cool we couldn’t get enough. You can’t get through the holidays trimming trees, drinking eggnog and Christmas feasts without thinking about the Nutcracker. If you have never seen The Nutcracker then it is a must on your Holiday List! Fabrice Calmels is the star of the Joffrey Ballet’s Nutcracker. We had a chance to catch up with Fabrice during his rigorous practice schedule. It was such a pleasure speaking with this French Odonis, (and jaw dropping) At 6’6” he is the Joffrey Ballets tallest Dancer and had never let an audience down. If you wanna get down the Chrome Cats are it! This brother sister duo is amazing! The smooth moves get you into the groove. They are a download must!! There are so many more features in this month’s issue I could go on and on but then there wouldn’t be any time for you to actually experience all the fun on your own. Read and be Merry! Deck the Halls with glitter and fun! Look for Mistletoe and leave lipstick on a stranger! We hope that you round out the year with much joy and anticipation with the New Year in tow. Cheers!!!

Skinny leg trousers are in style for men, giving the old standard leg the back seat this holiday season. A more modern cut for men, these also have a lower rise than standard suit pants, but are still acceptable for cocktail attire paired with a nice dress shirt. Definitely a hot item to include in your repertoire for dressing for holiday parties this year.

I’m a huge fan of anything glamourous and sparkly so holiday season is my favorite season to dress for because it’s a good excuse to add some glimmer to your look. Add some sparkly jewelry, a sparkly clutch or shoes, or even a dress embellished with some sequins or sparkle thread.

Printed dress shirts paired with your skinny leg trousers makes for an easy semi-casual outfit for men this holiday season. Keep the colors in the jewel tones and grays and blacks and stay away from prints that are too busy and you’ll look classic and elegant.

P

ainted nails are among the hottest beauty accessories this season. In fact, there is so much choice of seductive lacquer that you’d better get used to the idea that your hands are about to be flaunted more than before. And with good reason. To nail it like a pro during this holiday season you should choose at least one of the trending colors and match it with your makeup. Give your summer neons a break and update your winter mani collection with dark colors and‌ some surprises. Shades are understated but still fun this winter, and nails are definitely claiming their right to be the center of attention. Whether you go for heavy-metal, delicate neutrals or deep and mysterious darks, make sure you channel show-stopping nails.

B

Petal to the Metal Even if gold might be the first precious metal that comes to mind, other classics, such as silver and bronze have their say as well this season. The focus is on a multitude of other holographic shades (lavender and green look spectacular in chrome & steel versions) that shift color with every move of your hand. Swirly metallics are a big thing right now and you can go for any shade provided it comes in a tinny hue. If you want a unique hue, just mix two metals for a sizzling look!

Mystic Black

G

E

Black is bewitching. And is back with a vengeance. Go for gothic black in both textures: matte (for a velvety and soft feel) or glossy (for a polished touch). If you consider black to be too plain to match your party mood try a silky top coat or a coat in a brighter shade (green or red) for a festive dual-tone effect. Cast a spell over your nails this season and look mysterious. So many pairs of eyes will be hypnotized‌

Fire Red One can never have too much of a good thing, and bright red nails prove once more they could never be called passĂŠ. This huge classic made a spectacular comeback just in time for the holidays, with its ladylike luxurious feel. Tip: pair it with a dangerous red pout, Veronica Lake wavy hair and a vintage party dress, and you will be the talk of any party. For an edgy look, channel a sexy French mani with red tips. And wait for reactions.

H

Oxblood Mania The chicest nail color of the season sends you back to cool in no time. Yes, I am talking about sumptuous oxblood, a seductive shade that will blossom on eyes, lips and nails alike this holiday season. Call it wine, burgundy or cherry noir; this sanguine hue will burn hotter than any shade of red, adorning your fingers in a dramatic way. Play the part of the retro vixen, or the Old Hollywood femme fatale. They both work with oxblood nails.

Holiday Blues

I

Yes, this may come as a surprise, but a very pleasant one. Blue is here this winter, ready to put you in a fantastic party mood. From navy to electric and azure, blue was a runway hit this season, demanding attention from every single woman that is a declared nail varnish fan. The main obsession is navy, so you’d better stock up on that first. More exciting than black, midnight blue still goes with anything. And knows how to add a touch of (good) drama to your holidays.

3- Dimensional Your 3D nail accents will let anyone know where the party is. Set your imagination free and channel your inner sophisticated diva with bespoke nails, as 3D elements can never fail to wow. Allow your manicurist to glue glam crystals to your nails (in case you have some crystals on your outfit the match will be outstanding), lace (to reveal your romantic side) or metal studs (making a rock chic statement).

J

Electric Avenue Don’t be afraid to eat, drink and talk with your hands as much as possible at this season’s parties as long as you are wearing electric hues that put anybody in a festive spirit. Despite the gray, gloomy winter days, don’t shy away from poppy, crazy fuchsia, bright yellow, cobalt blue, ultra-violet or vitaminic orange that add a healthy burst of color to any winter look. These jewel tones are the best accents against neutral attire, so dare to create a vibrant contrast.

K

Textured Tips Dip your fingertips in glitter and amp up the holiday chic. Add the extra glitz-and-glam factor with textured accents like a pebbled sand effect, multicolored crystals or studded leather, and keep your jewelry to a minimum. Your nails will look far more original than any piece of bling you might wear. If you want less extravaganza go for black, gray or silver nails with glitter dusted tips. You will still keep things interesting!

L

Pretty Neutrals This time you won’t be matching only your foundation to your skin tone. But your nude nail color as well. Neutral nails elongate the hand and look really elegant. Keep your manicure chic and simple with bon ton beige, taupe or tan in case you are not a fan of glitz or dark hues. Simplicity can look glamorous with the right attitude, and the timeless appeal of nude hues will put you on the style map at any party. M

Matter of fact A matte texture gives nails an empowering look and lots of character. Shine-free nails are a real must-channel this season, adding body to any color in the most luxurious way. Go for matte top coats that will steal the shine of every polish creating a couture-worthy look. Your nails will look velvety and soft so, letting people feel them is totally safe and legit. Tip: the matte blackened shades are total can’t-go-wrongs.

Let yourself be inspired by the cool holiday colors of this season and paint your ten canvases in the most amazing shades. There is plenty to choose from so just get your party groove on and be ready to feel the festive spirit in your fingertips!

I

am not sure about you, but I have already started practising on my statement-making holiday makeup. And, even if catwalk colors and trends are not always the easiest to wear in real life, makeup artists were really generous this season, offering us some amazing choices for winter 2013 that I am already in love with. And I know you will be too. So, without further ado, with December literally around the corner, I give you the hottest makeup trends you should be sporting during this holiday season. Get those oohs and aahs ready!

Metallic Shine

Photo: nneirda / 123RF Stock Photo

Be ready to dazzle with glittery eyes like never before! The bling-like effect of silver sequins glued to the upper lid (Chanel), or of glitzy powder sprinkled over a layer of dark creamy eye shadow (Thakoon) will enhance your eyes, giving you a magnetic glance. This is the most show-stopping effect I can think of this season and, if you are aiming for an opulent look, you should definitely go for metallic, whether it’s platinum or gold. It will look mega-festive!

Bushy Brows Power brows are major head turners this season, so just forget about tweezers or wax, and let them look as unruly and messy as they please. For an impactful appearance brush, color and define them, and learn how to use your brow-kit. Chloe, Versace and Victoria Beckham gave us a good lesson on how to rock them big time this winter!

Photo: subbotina / 123RF Stock Photo

Gray Shadows Gray is the new black this winter. Just like a stormy horizon or a foggy morning, mysterious gray ombres (Chanel, Dior, Badgley Mischka) will illuminate our eyes in a sophisticated way. Use a lighter, slightly shimmering shade on the inner corner of the eye, ending up in a symphony of charcoal gray at the outer corner. Wear it with colorful attire to create a perfect balance and, especially if you have blue or green eyes, go buy this shade now!

13

In case you are still experiencing beach tan nostalgia, the on trend orange shade will help you keep this memory alive. Orange eyelids are ready to warm up your holidays with rich hues, from burnt orange to bronze, against flawless pale skin, as seen at Givenchy and Altuzarra. This is a spectacular alternative to the usual browns of the past cold seasons, and I am totally ready to be challenged by its versatility. Wear it with gold or brown in pareddown combinations, or with bolder hues such as electric blue or emerald green for a playful look. You won’t get by unnoticed, I promise.

Peachy Eyes & Cheeks Peach is an all-time favorite makeup shade, and I am so glad we can wear it during this holiday season! The news here is that, besides dusting it on our cheeks for a bonne mine, we will layer it on our eyelids as well, for a dreamy and radiant look. Vionnet and DSquared2 considered this to be the perfect choice for the barely-there makeup lovers. Wear it with flawless skin and nude lips, and don’t be afraid to look hopelessly romantic.

Photo: subbotina / 123RF Stock Photo

Tangerine Dream

Arm yourself with the darkest eyeliner and draw a pair of bold cat flicks: the feline look is back! Try the more sophisticated version using eye shadow, or the ‘60s look, with a sharp trace of eyeliner (Anna Sui, Monique Lhuillier). And if you like a metallic touch, Christian Dior came up with a rather original idea. Don’t struggle for perfection because the less polished it looks the sexier it is.

Photo: Olga Ekaterincheva / 123RF Stock Photo

Cat Eyes

If you prefer to go heavy on the eyes, your lips should stay nude or go pink. The latter choice is definitely more flattering, and the fact that we can play with this candy hue is so much fun! From rose to sorbet and shocking, pink is the stylish choice of the ladies who don’t want to make too big a statement with a dark lip. Dab some pink blush on your cheeks as well, without overdoing it. As seen backstage at Burberry and Versace, a dash of baby pink on fresh-looking skin will be a sight for anyone’s sore eyes.

14

Photo: subbotina / 123RF Stock Photo

Candy Pink

Berry & Bruised Plum Kisses It’s fruit time! Playful berry, intense burgundy and ripe plum lips are the boldest shades for your holiday lips, and this time precision does not matter at all. You are allowed to juggle with matte diva lips in a strong wine hue, or vampish stained lips that look as if they have just been kissed off or bitten. Extremely empowering, these moody colors will instantly add the wow factor to your holiday makeup and will get you ready for a sultry, stare-don’t-look appearance. The secret is to apply the lip liner then smudge a darker lipstick from the center of the lips, keeping a stain of color just in the middle. Fendi, Miu Miu and Antonio Marras showed us how it’s done best. Bonus: burgundy and russet go also on the lids this season for an enhanced glance.

Punk Smoky As you might already know punk is back this season, and with it the rebel look and the “whatever attitude”. In case you are tempted by the punk princess look, remember that your makeup should tell you’ve been sleeping with your eyeliner on (Roberto Cavalli). Either you go for gothic black, alternative gray, versatile brown or party gold, the smoky eye, a bit smudged or rubbed in, will give you a haute-couture look. Smoky eyes look sexy, there is no doubt about it, and it takes a bold lady in a party mood to channel them. Play with eye shadow and eye liner and, for a hypnotic worn-in effect apply your smoky eye with a brush then top it with a glossy layer using your fingertips.

Photo: zoomteam / 123RF Stock Photo

Now take your time to practise these amazing makeup trends. Come party season you will definitely know what you feel confident to wear and what suits you. I am counting on you to make jaw-dropping appearances these holidays!

How did you get started in your career? I really wanted to become an actress, which my parents absolutely weren’t happy about, I was suppose to study business as I was really good in mathematics but I’ve always was very stubborn and so I dropped out of business school against my parents wishes and was too proud to take any money of support from them so decided to finance my acting school myself. I had 5 different jobs before I discovered that modeling would actually bring me enough money to cover all the costs and that even through I never wanted to be a model it worked out for me very well but acting is what I really always wanted to do and its time now to pursue that goal!!! What did you want to be when you were younger? Ugh.. So many things!!!! LOL. When I was 4 I watched a movie with a dog that was sick and made me cry for days so I decided to become veterinarian, when I was 6 I started to watch a cartoon called Mila the Superstar which was about a volleyball player girl so I wanted to become a volleyball player, when I was 8 I was really into watching Renegade staring Lorenzo Lamas, that tv series was super popular in Germany, I wanted to become a bounty hunter, at around the age of 10 I watched one of my favorite movies of all time, the Godsfather and I wanted to become a mafia boss in the female version. Hahaha.. At some age I understood it would make much more sense to become an actress and just play all those great roles.

eating normal food you gain the weight back immediately plus maybe additional pounds. It is very frustrating, I’ve obviously been there, but its really to eat right and not eat to much and excise and make it a routine. Everything else is up and downs, nonpermament and unhealthy in my opinion. Especially all those diet pills are crazy unhealthy.. But if you really want to lose weight very fast, do a cleanse with juices and shake. One vegetable juice, one fruit juice (both freshly squeezed) and one protein shake for 3 to 7 days. It also cleans your liver, body and makes your skin look fresh and shinny :)!! What is your favorite food when you want to be “ bad”? I love steak!!! Medium rare please. And pasta. Penne al dente al arabiata. I love frozen yogurt with fruits and well if I want to go really bad with all the chocolate toppings, gummy worms, sprinkles and little candy threads.

What have been the biggest hurdles to get where you are today? Diet!!!!!!! I love food and gain weight so easily!!! LOL. There are always things that are challenging in each career not just in the modeling business but after all its not the worst job ever so I can’t complain too much ; ) ... I am very lucky and thankful for every opportunity. Since you’ve brought it up and seem to have all the experience with diets what is the best diet in your opinion/ experience? Honestly, I tried all of them!!! And many of them work for only a short period of time. For example a protein diet works great but once you get back to

How is the transition from modeling to acting? Being a successful model It’s not really easy, acting is totally new business and a new start and unfortunately you don’t get extra points for being an successful model :(. But luckily acting itself comes really easy to me, I have a lot of imagination and can easily get into a character, maybe thats also because i’m the only child and also didn’t have many friends in my childhood as we moved around a lot and I always played alone and had all these imaginary friends.

17

Would you consider LA your home now? Would you consider living in another city? Abso-f@*kinglutely !!!! I love LA!!! I don’t think I’d ever want to move, I’ve lived all over the world and LA just like home for the first time since Germany PLUS it is also my favorite place in the world to be living. Of course there are other beautiful places to visit and travel too, I also love London and New York but it’s so cold in the winter !!! LA’s climate is just perfect. What will you do for the holidays? Plans New Years have been always a big thing for me, I know it’s kind of silly but I believe that how you start your new year your whole year will be. Traditionally I’ve always gone over New Years to some hotspot place such as St. Barths or St. Moritz etc. However the past two years I became somehow more family oriented and took my parents on vacations to Istanbul and last year to Dubai and so will I go this year to Puerto Rico. We just have a new family member that will join us my kitty cat Hollywood :). What do you “love / hate” in human character / people? Don’t like so much ;) cruelness, cheapness and greediness . LOVE punctuality, fairness and kindness. What don’t you like/ like about yourself? Since I am German, I am very organized and well structured and it freaks me out if something is not planed out, I have all those little TO DO lists that freaks some people out and can be difficult to deal with. I am just not a “go with the flow” person. But it has also some good sides to it! I am very punctual which I really like about myself and get a lot done.

playing James Bond but I guess it was more his role, generally I find these character attributes attractive I guess … Charming, charismatic, exciting, welldressed and of course sexy ; ) What would be your dream date? For that matter me as a James Bond girl with of course James Bond. Ha ha ha. As you can probably see I don’t like it boring… I am not much of a romantic girl I like more exciting things. I think a great first date is to go hiking, you can see immediately how fit someone is, get your workout done and if its gets boring or you run out of words you can still run away… And if you really like the guy you can stage a fall and let the guy rescue you! Seriously, what attracts you in men? Beautiful and warm eyes. And that great smile, I love it when a man has that 4 year old boy devilish but warm smile. I love blond guys but actually I never dated one. Good shape, exciting and great style helps too. You didn’t say anything about the personality.. I think the character is a lot and I love a warm personality, fair, generous, smart, thoughtful, honest, family oriented etc but when I meet a guy I am going for the looks first and I believe if someone says different they lie… You are not going to flirt with someone and end up sleeping with some just because he has such a good heart. That would be charity work!!! Lol. oh and cat haters and cat allergy is an absolutely no go for me since I just got one! I don’t think you can really tell, it’s that first moment when you see someone and your heart start to beat like crazy…. this is always a great indicator. How do you deal with breakups?

What don’t you like / don’t like I absolutely don’t like my hands or feet. I bite my nails when I get nervous and thats how they look sometime too. I love my eyes and hair. Are you dating anyone? If no, who would be your dream “date”?

Breaksups are great for diets!! And then to dress up, look gorgeous and sexy and show the world what you got! I guess not really but I learned to try to see everything in a positive way and there is always a reason why something ends and of course an ending means also a new beginning! What do you enjoy most about your life?

There is not really a dream date per se…. I had for a long time a crush on Pierce Brosnan while he was

18

Everything!!! You always have a bad day here and

there but that just makes you appreciate the good days more. Plus, I am mostly in charge of my life so it is what I make it! What do you plan on changing? I think its more adding things to my life at this point. I already changed so many things in the past year in a very healthy direction. LA makes you pick up that healthy lifestyle vibe. Who do you most admire? Madonna for her willpower and fearlessness , Angelina Jolie for her beauty and charity work, Juliane Moore for her talent and my Mum for the love she gave me. What is your favorite color, accessory and city? Rainbow, Attitude and the World, well if I have to choose one you should probably know by now that it is Los Angeles.

I

t’s always stressful to start dating someone new weeks or even a couple of months before their birthday. What’s the gifting protocol? How much do you spend? What do you give? Holidays can be equally stressful for newly minted couples. How much do you spend? What do you give? It’s too soon to spend a lot of money. You likely don’t know each other enough to know what they have always wanted. But you can still get them a gift that they will love, that means something, and that will even give you brownie points for being so awesome.

#1 holiday gift mistake made is lack of communication. #2 holiday gift mistake made is lack of thought.

24

What to get your new significant other Communication: How important are the holidays to your partner? How have they historically spent them? Ask questions and tell stories about what the holidays mean to eachother. What your favorite holiday memories are. How do you spend the holidays? Not only are you learning more about your partner, about their family, friends, traditions, and values, but you are also learning their preferences when it comes to gifts- both giving and receiving. Talking about the holidays can be very revealing. Thought: More than anything else, your gift should be thoughtful. As you are talking about the holidays, you can even ask what their favorite gifts are that they have received over the years. Again, you are collecting information. Do they value experiential gifts, the gifts of time, or a certain type of present? This doesn’t mean that you need to ask: “What do you want for the holidays?” But if you listen you will be able to come up with at least a preferred style, and from there you can select something that has the highest chances of them loving.

So what do you give? If your partner is in the process of building a business, give something that supports their dedication to their career, something that says “I believe in you” and “I want to help you bring out and present your best self.” Give a pair of beautiful Italian shoes, a “power” tie, an “adult” watch (if he is still wearing something that belongs in college), a beautiful wallet to replace that old Velcro thing, a homemade gift certificate to the building of a website (which you already contracted on elance.com) or a logo made by a designer.

Photo: Karpenyuk / 123RF Stock Photo

“I Believe In You”

25

“I Love When You’re Happy” If your partner couldn’t be happier than when she/he is with her dog, when she is on a hike, or when she is cooking, give a gift that celebrates and supports that activity or interest. Have a caricature made of your partner and her dog. Find some retractable hiking poles and a new pair of hiking shoes that replace her worn down favorites. Buy her an awesome gift basket of Sur La Table kitchen accessories. “Because You Won’t Buy It for Yourself” If he always talks about how awesome ipads are, but he won’t buy one for himself. If she envies her best friend’s new stilettos, but feels guilty about spending the money on herself. Get that. It shows your partner that they deserve the little luxuries and that you want to see them smile. “Let’s Spend More Time Together” The gift of time and shared experiences can be the most cherished gift of all. Buy a couples spa treatment for you and her. Plan a weekend away at a local hotel. Go kite surfing or kayaking. Organize a trip to NY and go skating in Rockefeller Center. Arrange a hike with a picnic at the top. But don’t just give a random experience or one that you really want. Give something that they really want, but you can do together and enjoy. When you give the gift, write a card that explains the itinerary, why you want to do it together, AND give a little gift that embodies the experience so that they also have a wrapped “present.” Because everyone likes a little something to unwrap.

anging out with a handsome, loveable young man is such a hard life as we at Naluda discovered. Our hot date was with Marvin Cortes of America’s Next Top Model. Now we know why Tyra was always rooting for this talented young man! He’s the down to earth guy that every dude wants to hang out with and the romantic cutie that every girl wishes they could go on a date with! Given Marvin’s Bronx background we decided to liven things up by taking him to the Graffiti Art District in L.A. He loved it and we loved that he loved it! He showed his fun adventurous side at every turn. While trekking through the Urban jungle of L.A we were able to ask Marvin a few questions that we thought you might be interested in.

34

How did you get onto Americas Next Top Model? I was discovered by an off-duty casting director at my job working in Zara. I was an hour late that day due to train delays, which in fact caused a ripple effect. My lunch was pushed forward and while I was working the floor during my scheduled lunch time, I was approached by Danielle, the casting director. Had I been on time, I would have missed her and never known about ANTM. Sometimes it does pay to be a little late. I auditioned with her help and stood out from thousands of applicants by simply being myself, next thing I know I was in LA as a semi-finalist and the rest is history.

mom raised us most of the time since my dad was working. My mom raised 7 strong, healthy, and motivated men. My mom and dad are superheroes. I have a hard time taking care of myself and they were able to handle us and not break a sweat; superheroes. My brothers and I are very alike in terms of sense of humor and morals. Other than that, we have our own individuality. We each have very different goals in life from either being a musician, a cook, a lawyer, a cop, and now a model. We all wish to be able to buy my parents an enormous house one day and make sure they are catered to, that is the ultimate Cortes clan goal. Do you speak Spanish?

Is it true that you never had modeled before ANTM? Yes, I had only done a test shoot with a friend who had just bought a new camera lens and wanted to shoot with it. He said I was perfect to be a male model, he said I had the look and correct measurements for a great career. Little did I know in only a year I would be shooting with Tyra Banks, Jez Smith, Sarah Silvers, and many other extraordinary photographers. Coming from such humble beginnings how has your family reacted to your fame and being on the show? My family has been extremely supportive of me and proud of whom I have become. They see the dramatic change in my life and see that I have not let it change my morals or personality. My mom gets emotional because she has always wanted the best for me and seeing me on TV has been a dream come true for both of us. My dad is proud of the man I am becoming and just wants me to stay focused on what is right and not get caught up in the dark side of the industry. My family loves me very much and is proud to see me live my dreams. You have a large family back in New York, can you tell us a little bit about your family? I like to believe that my family is the modern day “Brady Bunch” or “Full House”. My mom stays home and takes care of us from cooking to cleaning. Embarrassing fact, my mom did all of our laundry up until I was 18. I still call her when washing certain loads I am unsure of. My dad works all day and comes home late night. He always makes sure we stay out of trouble and supports the entire family financially. My

36

Yes, my parents made sure that I spoke Spanish at home. Without my parents forcing us to always speak Spanish, since they won’t respond to us otherwise, I wouldn’t be bilingual and miss out on some serious Spanish commercial bookings. Can you explain to us what your life was like before the show? I worked two jobs while going to school full time at the local community college. I actually had a 4.0 GPA during my school career. Math and earth science are my absolute favorite subjects. I worked at GUESS and Zara as a sales associate. I had a good core of friends who I would spend my off days with. I had no time for a girlfriend but I still flirted a lot. I’ve only really had one girlfriend before meeting Renee on the show. It must have been quite an experience living in the Bronx with your family and then living with the whole cast of ANTM in such a competitive environment, what have you learned about yourself? It was not as different as living in my apartment in the Bronx actually. I was constantly competing with my brothers whether it was sports, grades, or attention. I found the bunk beds on the show to be extremely comforting because I slept in the top bunk in my Bronx apartment and on the show. It was different living with so many different people but once we found common ground, we became very close. I think the people this cycle was the best in history because they were good hearted and though it was competition, we genuinely want each other to succeed. It was hard to make these great friends and seeing their

37

dream be taken away. When I befriend someone, I love them and wish nothing but the best for them so seeing them “go home” always hurt. I have learned that anyone can be great friends no matter where you come from or how much money is in your bank account, as long as there is mutual interest and common ground. I have learned to be confident in myself and realized that dreams in this world are achievable with the right drive and persistence. Working on ANTM, you worked with some of the best in the industry – what an amazing experience; is this you want to continue to do as your career? How did that differ from your 5 year plan before you started this journey? It was absolutely an amazing experience working with the talent that was on the show. I used to think that Tyra Banks was this superhuman model who I couldn’t look at too long or else I would explode. I have learned that everyone is just human and though they are famous they are relatable and are here just to bring joy to others and create art. I realize I want to do this for my career. I want to continue to work with amazing people and create art. I wish to become a household name like Tyra Banks or Rob Evans and show people that it can be done. I have begun by taking acting classes, dance classes, and even singing classes. I want to be a model that can act, sing, and dance. That is why I decided to live in Los Angeles instead of New York. My original plan was to go to school, get my degree in Math and minor in science. I have always wanted to be a teacher for high school. My high school calculus teacher inspired me to become a teacher and be a cool teacher that everyone wishes to have. On the show you got close to Rene. Are you still seeing each other? Yes, I and Renee got extremely close. She is moving to LA in January and we will continue to date. I am really excited about that because I have been able to explore LA and have been planning about 8 romantic dates that will blow her mind. I am a visionary and so I cannot wait to create the type of dates and moments I know we both want to share. We will keep each other focused and motivated to become successful. I believe we make each other better.

What do you do for fun? I love to stay active by going to the gym, beach, hiking, or play sports. Thanks to Don Benjamin from the show, who is one of my close friends in LA, I have been able to enjoy the LA nightlife and party from time to time. I only have a few friends in LA and all from the show. I am just so happy that we have remained in each other’s lives because we were able to share such an experience. I like to be outdoors and be with people who are driven in their lives. How do you keep yourself in shape? Living with my brother who is a personal trainer, I have adopted the gym lifestyle. I go to the gym about 4 or more days a week and spend about 1 hr. and half there. I like to focus on different body parts certain days and I love the steam room. I don’t eat super clean, I treat myself with a nice burger or pizza every once and while. I am not too big on sweets or deserts, I know, I am crazy but my body has just accepted that it is not for me, ha-ha. What was it like growing up one of the youngest of 7 boys all living together in an apartment in the Bronx? My brothers and I are only about a year or two apart from each other starting from the 7th man down. It was actually really cool because I was able to get the most hand-me-down clothes. I knew my brothers would outgrow their clothes and I would be able to enjoy them for myself ha-ha. It was really educational because my brothers taught me a lot of what they were going through. Homework was easy because we would help each other out since it was not too long ago that one of us did the exact same type of homework. I am a big brother to the youngest Christian, and so I take that job very seriously and feel happy to set an example and guide him through life and now I have much more life experience to share with him. All of us love each other very much and help each other when we can. I am grateful that we have such close relationships. I honestly could not imagine my big family without any one of us, it wouldn’t be the same.

We can see that you were really feeling the pressure of the competition by episode 13, in Bali. What was it that Tyra said to you privately? Did she kick your ass into gear? Do you see and believe in what she saw in you? I think I felt that I would soon being eliminated after Don and I were in the bottom 2. I was super surprised that Tyra herself was the one who was talking me off the ledge. I will never forget that moment because I couldn’t believe that it was Tyra. She gave me the boost I needed at the time. She really has the power to relate to how you are feeling and knows what to say to make you snap out of it. I understood what she saw in me and she made me use my feelings as an advantage. I believe I saw what she saw after that night and it was the kick I needed. Also her hugs are powerful; they make you forget about your worries.

What is your dream clothing brand you wish to model for? I wish to one day model for Burberry. It is one of my favorite designers of all time. I could never afford it but I will be able to in a year or two when I really start to entrench myself into my career.

How was Bali? What did Bali become for you? Any revelations? Bali was incredible for me. It reminded me a lot of Honduras. It was beautiful and felt like a different world. Bali became my place of awakening. It made me realize who I was and what I was going to become in the future when I came back to the States. It made me realize that I am more than a normal guy. I am constantly dreaming and envisioning myself in many projects. Bali made me shift my thoughts into action. The Bronx is a tough neighborhood. Do your buddies tease you for being a model? My buddies still see me as the same Marvin. I am the same Marvin except not. My walk, voice and spirit are different. They see a new person who is on a mission. They don’t tease me too much except I don’t think me dressing up as a girl on the show will ever be forgotten and be a nice little joke to throw my way ha-ha. What are you currently up to living in Los Angeles post show? Actually, I have just signed up for an 8 week acting course with Lesley Kahn in Hollywood. I am taking Actors movement class with Chandra Che. Also I am joining the Upright Citizens Brigade, which is an improve group. I am signing with a commercial, theatrical, and modeling agency by the end of December. I have a spread in Runway magazine that can be found in any store or magazine stand on December 10th.

CHROME CATS SURE GOT THE CREAM!

C

hrome Cats aka KJ and Jamila ‘Mila’ Sims are aiming for the top of the charts. The brother-sister duo from California are best described as the love child of Black Eyed Peas, Kanye West and Rihanna - their sound is a vibrant mix of hip-hop and pop beats with care free vibes. In May 2012 their first release DNA of a Winner made waves but since then the jazzy rapper and his powerhouse singer sibling have shown the world they’re here to stay. Their latest single ‘Best Life’ is a fun and inspiring track about living in the moment with lyrics that speak to any generation coupled with fresh beats. Download Best Life on iTunes now. Accompanying the single release, the duo also released their lyric video on YouTube with an official music video to follow. Stay tuned by visiting chromecats.com

Can you tell us how and when Chrome Cats started? We got started during summer break of 2006. We enjoyed listening to music all the time around the house and our mom suggested that we write some of our own songs. We’ve been writing and recording ever since. Describe your sound? Our sound is a mixture of hip-hop, along with a blend of R&B/pop hooks. We love creating melodies & singing hooks. When it comes to the verses, we like to keep them meaningful with metaphors and melodies underlying them to add in a different texture to the record. Siblings working together, is that difficult? It’s actually pretty easy for us haha. Whenever we have an idea, we just knock on each other’s door and get to work. We’ve written a lot of songs within the last few months together just by going in each other’s room and creating music from scratch. It’s really convenient. “Best Days” your latest single was released in September and since then has been climbing nicely in the Billboard charts – congratulations! Can you tell us a little about the meaning of the song and how it came about?

QUICK FACTS Name: KJ & Jamila Age: 16 (Jamila), 19 (KJ) Hometown: Vallejo, CA & Fort Wayne, IN Inspiration: Fans, Art & Fashion Favorite phrase: “Our beliefs about what we are and what we can be precisely determine what we can be” - Anthony Robbins Favorite Singer / Artist: Kanye West, Demi Lovato, B.o.B, Chiddy Bang Favorite color: Red & Grey Best place on earth: Hawaii

Thank you! When we were creating “Best Life”, we wanted to build a song that people can party to, as well as listen to and just vibe with. We jumped into the studio with producer Floyd Thomas and recorded about three songs. We chose “Best Life” as a single and linked with producer Jingles in Malaysia and he added in strings and his touch to the record and we rolled out with. Do you both write your songs? Where does the inspiration come from? Yup! The only records we didn’t fully write, are the hooks on “Best Life” & “DNA of a Winner”. However, we wrote the verses and the bridge. Our song writing inspiration comes out of our day to day life from hanging with friends, the situations were in, or just reminiscing on older times in California.

57

What do you want you fans to feel when listening to your songs? When fans listen to our music, we want them to feel uplifted and inspired. Our songs include a lot of positive vibes because whatever you go through, you have to have a positive outlook on things, and you’ll be happy with the outcome. We like to make feel good music that puts people in a good mood and helps them get through the day. Your official music video is out now, where was it shot, and what’s the story line for the video? We shot the video in Chicago with director, Peter Campbell. The video basically captured us having fun and enjoying our journey, living the “Best Life”. We shot some of the scenes downtown by the loop and at the beach. The video includes dancers in the scene downtown as well. We had a great time walking around downtown Chicago that night and meeting fans. Be sure to check it out here: www. youtube.com/watch?v=vrbotrDAUNs. If you could work with another artist who would it be? We would really love to work with Kanye West, Ryan Leslie, Pharrell & Ryan Tedder. We love their music and their production work is truly amazing. What has been your biggest success to date? A big success for us this year and last year was getting on to the Billboard chart. It was an awesome achievement. Another great success was reaching the 1 million-views mark for all our YouTube videos. #ChromeArmy is the best! What’s coming up next for Chrome Cats, any tours or appearances? We’ll be doing different shows through out the end of the year. We definitely aim to be on tour next year. Check www.chromecats.com for all the future show details! What are the 5 main factors (in your opinion) that have got you where you are today? 1. Mom - She inspired us to start writing music and

58

took us to our first studio session in Fremont, CA. 2. Dad - Our dad gave us our first home recording device to put all our song ideas on to. He also helps us a bunch on the business side of the industry. 3. Fans - When we released our first ever recording on MySpace, the supporters we gained inspired us to keep releasing recordings on our page. 4. Lakefront Records - The CEO Bryan Tan signed us in October 2010 and has supported and invested in us for a very long time from the ‘Rise EP’ to ‘Flight to Paradise’ to the ‘Best Life’ single. 5. Fort Wayne, Indiana - When we moved to Fort Wayne in early 2010, it helped take our music to another level. We met engineer/producer Chad Deutsch in 2010 and he helped us a lot with recording in the studio and experimenting with new things. We also play(ed) our first & many local shows and festivals that enabled us to connect with more fans & artists in the city. Last but not least, we also met producer Floyd Thomas who worked with us on our first & second radio singles. Any words of wisdom, to anybody wanting to start a career in music? To anyone wanting to start a music career, keep writing and perfecting your craft. Branch out to other artists and people in your area that share the same drive to succeed in music as you do. When you work with someone that wants the same thing you want, you will progress. Most importantly, believe in you. A lot of people will tell you no or try and discourage you but in the end, it all comes back into your hands. You control what you want to accomplish and you can make it happen. We wish you the very best in your growing career! Thank you so much for having us!

his Dance Vixen is a club thumping phenom. Astraea’s Euro-electric beat makes you want to dance all night long. Her hit “Still Dancing” is so refreshing it makes you smile the moment it comes on. This is not unlike Astraea herself. Having a chance to chat with Astraea was just as refreshing. She is a young artist that holds her own. Her carefree attitude is catching and she is not afraid to show it. This gorgeous girl is down to earth and fun to talk to. Whether she is riding her pink scooter with her bright pink hair through the streets of LA or traveling the world for fun, her sense of style and being is one to behold. Fun Facts about this cool chick aside from the fact that she rides a pink scooter; she loves raw cookie dough and very small trinkets. Originally from a small town in San Diego this former Choir Girl has always had a passion for singing and love of horses. She writes her own music and is dedicated to the organic feel of a song. Every song carries a piece of herself with it. Astraea’s personal style matches her music, fun spunky and original. When asked who her style inspiration is she mentions her mother. Astraea also loves to flip through fashion magazines and make a style

60

uniquely hers. She is not afraid to try something new. She wakes up each morning deciding who she will be that day. “Color, texture and artwork makes for amazing inspiration when dressing yourself and I gravitate towards what makes me feel good. Inspiration is everywhere for me.” Astraea’s favorite place she has traveled has been Ireland. Ireland was especially serendipitous for her because it was a specific trip with no agenda after her grandmother passed away. Being from Ireland, Astraea felt her grandmother was with her the whole time. She stayed longer than planed and it was both emotionally charged and inspirational. Next stop? Japan! She is obsessed with Japan’s culture and fashion. She loves Hello Kitty! This amazing sense of wonderment is evident in Astraea’s music. Happy vibrant and alive! No wonder you want to get on your feet when her music comes on. When asked where she wants to be in 10 years she says with out a doubt she will conquer the Dance/Pop scene. Personally we can’t wait to hear what she has in store for us next. I’m sure it will keep us dancing in the clubs to a catchy beat that we just can’t get out of our heads. Catch Astraea’s addicting album “Dirty Blonde” on iTunes.

abrice Calmels is an impressive figure. His stature, flexibility and grace put him at the top 1% of athletes in the world. His sport is so rigorous and demanding that he treats his body like a finely tuned machine. Surely, I’m speaking of football or basketball right? Maybe baseball? Nope, many of those athlete’s actually turn to this 300 year old sport to improve their own game. I’m speaking about a little known sport in the U.S called ballet. If you think that ballet is nothing but women in pink tutus and little men running around a stage, think again.

63

64

Fabrice will be performing in the Festival Ballet Theatre production of The Nutcracker at the Barclay Theater, Irvine, Orange County California from the 13th thru 15th December as a Guest Artist, for more information or tickets to the performance CLICK HERE

Fabrice has changed the face of ballet. At 6’6” Fabrice is a presence on stage like no other. He is the tallest Ballet dancer that the Joffrey Institute in Chicago has ever had the privilege of working with. The fluidity with which he can control his body would bring you to tears when watching him perform. Many people don’t understand that ballet is very physically taxing. Imagine carrying the full weight of your body on your tiptoes and forcing yourself to move gracefully and with such artistry that you can bring an audience on an emotional journey without speaking a word. Fabrice began learning ballet when he was about 4 years old. He followed along as his sister attended ballet class in France. After a while the teacher decided that she wanted a male student in class and Fabrice was it. Fabrice enjoyed it from the beginning and it sure wasn’t the lack of girls he was around. Eventually he saw the challenge and discipline within the sport and when he was accepted to the prestigious Paris Opera at the age of 14. He was very proud of his early successes and

Photo: Giuliano Bekor

knew this was where he belonged. The Paris Opera became his second family. He went to school with the same students in the Opera. The camaraderie was intense. His teachers constantly pushed him. They expected the best. There were moments when he thought of doing something else in life. He loves Math and wanted to become a teacher or a pilot but he was so ensconced in ballet and loved the challenges. As a dancer he has always had

intense moments that continued to change him, but one moment that stands out is his performance in Jiri Killian’s, Return to a Strange Land. “The Paris Opera was known for its classical ballets. Bringing this new genre to the stage was fascinating to me. It was a challenge to me because this was a very new way of performing.”

“ When I achieved this I felt like I had been able to swim across the ocean.”

Fabrice is passionate about bringing ballet into mainstream society. He is adamant that it is not just for girls. It is a rigorous sport that requires dedication and passion. “It is the hardest form of athleticism out there.” With most sports flexibility does not marry well with speed, strength and coordination. If you think of a football player they might have strength and speed but do not have flexibility. This brings ballet into another form altogether. The training program with the Joffrey Ballet is very challenging. We are put through rigorous training and there are very high expectations. There are only an average of 40 ballet dancers in the company. You must be on top of your craft at all times. Once people see what we, as ballet dancers have to do to marry speed, strength, coordination and flexibility they are amazed at what we can do. It is not for everyone and very few can do what we do. This is a wonderful form of discipline and Fabrice hopes to bring awareness to young people about the ballet. One such project he is working on is “Ballet Monsters”. He is hoping to make an animated movie about aliens taking over, while the leader falls in love with a beautiful ballet dancer on Earth. As Fabrice describes the plot I cant help but feel his passion and excitement for the ballet. Fabrice never gets tired of what he does. It makes him happy to do something he loves so much. He could not imagine retiring anytime soon. On his down time he loves to relax and just watch movies. Behind the serious façade he truly is a jokester, he loves knowing that people think he is very serious, then pulling a prank or two to keep things lively within his company. To get a true sense of what a ballet dancer is capable of you just have to watch a performance for yourself. There isn’t a better performance to start with then The Nutcracker. Fabrice will be performing with the Joffrey Ballet from Dec 6- 28th. It is a graceful and moving performance done every year and completely worth it.

‘Tis the season to be jolly and the time of year we find ourselves attending more social events, where we are tempted to indulge in delicious holiday treats and delectable traditional holiday meals. ‘Tis the season we put our bikinis and board shorts away, bundle up and head to the snow capped mountains for more festivities and fun. The winter holiday season brings forth an entirely unique energy into our lives. Hopefully we will choose to avoid the holiday blues that typically result from seasonal stress and over-indulgence, and instead, choose to take a healthy approach to the holiday season. This year, let’s make the most of the season by planning festivities that encourage a healthy, fit approach to the new year. Here are some fun and creative ways to plan for a festive and fit holiday season: Organize a Christmas Carol Bike Ride - Instead of throwing a traditional holiday party focused on trays of fatty foods being passed around a decorated living room, organize a holiday party bike ride. Throw a bicycle decorating party, and award the person with the most festive bicycle. Think bells, streamers, etc... Wear festive attire (Santa hats, elf shoes, stockings...) and go for a city-wide bike ride, singing carols and bringing cheer to passers by! It’s a super healthy and fun way to bring joy to others, stay active and fit, get a few laughs, and celebrate the holiday season with friends. Burn Calories at the Mall - ‘Tis the season for gift shopping! This year, make the most of every trip to the mall by turning your shopping spree into a calorie burning workout. Start by parking your car as far as possible from the mall entrance. Show some holiday spirit by offering that up-close parking spot to your neighbor, and burn more calories by taking a few extra steps to shop. Use the stairs and avoid any and all elevators and escalators. Carry your bags and skip the shopping cart. Buy a pedometer so you can know how far you’ve walked at the end of your shopping excursion. Walk briskly. Double up your stair steps. Feel a sense of accomplishment for getting your holiday shopping done while trimming your waistline!

Head to the Mountains! - Plan a weekend of snow-shoe’ing, skiing, ice-skating, snowboarding... You name it! These are all fun, fat-burning activities! A 125 lb. individual burns up to 500 calories down-hill skiing for an hour. So hit the slopes! If you are not a snow skier, that’s ok! There’s plenty of other outdoor athletic options. For example, hiking and snow shoe’ing in the fresh mountain air is an excellent alternative. Remember to stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol. It is super easy to become dehydrated in high altitudes. Be smart. Drink plenty of water and have fun! Throw a Fitness Football Party. - Watching football this season doesn’t mean you have to be a couch potato. Have some friends over to enjoy the big game, but skip the pizza and beer! There are so many low-calorie, delicious snack-food options out there, ranging from veggies and healthy dips to low-calorie buffalo chicken wings. Trim your Waistline at every Holiday Party It is ok to reach for those tray-passed finger foods. It’s NOT ok to reach for the tray every time it passes by! Give yourself a limit to the number of reaches you will take! Depriving oneself of tempting treats can result in making very poor food choices later down the road. So do NOT always deprive yourself of a tempting treat. It’s often better to satisfy a food craving from time to time. The thing to avoid is over-indulgence. Be kind to yourself and accept your decision to eat that fatty little appetizer, without associating guilt to your decision. If that cheese ball looks too good to pass up, then enjoy ONE cheese ball. Just one. Not 5 cheese balls. Or you will run the risk of becoming a cheese ball too! Oh! And don’t forget to dance! If the event you’re attending offers music and dancing, then get dancing! Dancing burns anywhere between 200-500 calories per hour, depending on the type of dance you do. Dancing is fun, and if you are dancing, you certainly will not be pigging out at the buffet table. Have a healthy and happy holiday season! Remember, simply focus your energy on ways to make the very best out of every situation this season, and you will feel more fit and refreshed as you enter into the new year. Take advantage of crowded malls and enjoy the walk from your car to the mall. Give up your parking space with a smile. Turn a football party into a healthy and interactive experience. Experience fresh mountain air with fun cardio activities and lots of water. Enjoy the party, burn calories and kick up your heels in your dancing shoes! Embrace your cravings for holiday treats and congratulate yourself for enjoying the party with self control and moderation. Organize fun and fit festivities with friends and host an active Christmas caroling party!

P

orsche enthusiasts have a reason to rejoice. The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S delivers innovation and homage in equal measures, which is exactly what fans of the esteemed German automaker want to see. Every new version of the Porsche 911 is measured more against its direct predecessors than its competitors. Consistently, since the first turbocharged 911 debuted in 1974, each new version has come under pressure to retain the essence of the platform while adding creature comforts and handling improvements at regular model year intervals. As a result, the 911 has remained for the most part consistently good, having merely expounded upon the same basic idea for the past 40 years or so. The early Turbo was a bear to handle with its legendary flat-six in the rear - a superstar in the straightaways that gave many inexperienced drivers heart palpitations in the corners. Most of the design upgrades along the way have centered on making the Turbo more manageable. But, as a result of Porsche’s attempts to tame the most celebrated pony in its stable, some 911s of recent memory have suffered from a certain “softness” that drew the ire of even staunch Porsche loyalists. Indeed, it seemed for a while that the rampant success of Porsche’s decidedly suburb-friendly SUV, the Cayenne, had led the company to dedicate itself to soccer momfriendly design conventions across the board.

Thankfully, the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S (also designated as the 991) shakes off all that purported softness, unleashing its animal side by way of a mean-looking, intake-laden snout, a noticeably more guttural exhaust grunt, and perhaps most importantly, a hair raising zero-to-sixty time of just 2.9 seconds. Take that number with a grain of salt, though, because Porsche has historically undercut its stated specifications to err on the side of modesty, indicating that the Turbo S should do a little better than that already impressive spec when accelerating from a standstill. The beast is definitely back in the newest generation of the 911. Let’s take a closer look. On the shoulders of a (gentle) giant The 911 has always been a great car, even throughout its many aesthetic permutations over the years. The last one, internally dubbed the 997 Turbo S (2007 – 2012), was something of a gentle giant

when compared with others in the model’s history. Sure, the 997 Turbo S was no slacker in the performance department, outputting 520 horses and accelerating nearly as quickly as the new Turbo S does. And the 997 was a good “track day” car, just like many 911s that came before it. But the 997 suffered from several design nods taken from the Cayenne, including its all-wheel-drive system, in addition to an approachable, warm, and welcoming front fascia. But the 2014 911 Turbo S is all new, marking only the third total platform revamp in the history of the Turbo. The car now looks refreshingly more aggressive, with its massive air intakes and more rakish overall look, making it appear more like a “big brother” to the always-sleek Porsche Cayman than ever before. The designers of the Turbo S have updated the all-wheel-drive system for better torque distribution across the axles, with new-fangled electro-hydraulic actuation replacing the all-hydraulic actuation of the 997.

Interestingly, another widely-touted upgraded spec in the new 911 is fuel efficiency. One wonders just how much those who are in the market for a grand touring car of the likes of the 911 would really be concerned with fuel economy, but Porsche has addressed the issue nonetheless. The Turbo S, Porsche claims, boasts an impressive (for a car in this class) fuel economy of 24.2 mpg. Oddly enough, all new 911s have grown in physical dimensions, despite improving fuel efficiency across the line up. The new Turbo S gains 2.2 inches in length, while adding 1.1 inches to its backside. The improved gas mileage defies these expansions thanks to an all-aluminum body shell, which sufficiently compensates for the overall 44-lb. weight increase over the preceding 997 Turbo S. Inspiring performance The engine in the new 911 is a 3.8-liter boxer twinturbocharged engine that features Porsche’s “variable turbine geometry” (VTG). This technology allows the turbocharger to replicate the geometry of both large and small turbochargers. The twin-turbochargers employ a system of variable vanes that

move to facilitate either the massive pressure of a large turbo or the quick response of a small one. This means the turbocharger can add boost across the operating spectrum of the engine, maintaining pressure more consistently than predating turbochargers of either variety. In other words, VTG technology offers the best of both worlds - all of the plusses, none of the minuses. As a result, the VTG system, at last, totally divorces the current Turbo S from the notorious turbo lag of the original Turbo from four decades ago. The Turbo S also benefits from advanced aerodynamics. A retractable three-stage spoiler extends from the front bumper when the speedometer reaches the 80 mph mark and the rear wing actively adapts itself for maximum down force at various speeds. The aerodynamic design of the Turbo S, coupled with the raw power of its engine, contributes to the car’s remarkable top speed of 207 mph. That kind of speed doesn’t have to be a rough ride, though. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adjusts the damping force exerted on each

wheel according to road stresses, intelligently. The driver can choose between Normal and Sport modes, offering enhanced comfort or increased firmness, respectively. Perhaps the best way to describe the design conventions in use in the Turbo S is to say that everything contributes to its remarkable performance, because the whole thing is purpose-built and tailor-made to bolt. Porsche AG has always stood as a testament to German design initiative, and the 2014 911 Turbo S continues that tradition. It’s all about performance and design excellence, from the tires to the sunroof. From the inside looking out Inside the cabin of the 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S is everything one might expect of a Porsche. Aesthetic minimalism is interrupted only by the instrument panel and infotainment display. Judging by the upholstery, at a cursory glance the new 911 may as well be a 1980s 911. The leathers are presented in the expected way, with seams and tucks

in all the right places. The seats lean forward with the same side-mounted levers as always. The infotainment hub in the Turbo S comes courtesy of Burmester. Other interior complements include active cruise control, a first for the Turbo S. Though Porsche’s are infamously magnets for the fuzz, this 911 helps you follow the follow the letter of law with innovative speed limit (and road sign) recognition. Now, that’s keeping speed top of mind. Lasting impressions The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S is a growling, prowling, heaving, and gnawing beast, clad in what is perhaps the world’s most beautiful straight jacket. The body, the chassis, and everything else in the car, right down to the seats, exist to facilitate one thing: performance. Porsche designers have done what we want, what we expect, nothing more and nothing less. They have delivered a new 911 Turbo S that is the old 911 Turbo S, only magnificently, subtly oh-so-much better. And that’s all we could ask for.
