Swakopmund Mass Housing Project Lavrenty Repin While many companies that won a tender from NHE for the Mass Housing Project in Swakomund are only now beginning with the initial stages of construction, Namibian company Power Oyeno has made an example by constructing low-cost housing ahead of schedule. The company is responsible for the construction of low cost houses on block 8, inland, next to the DRC informal settlement as

well as in Mondesa, extension 9. In total, the company will build 2034 houses in the next two years, and if the first phase is anything to go by, this goal may be reached even sooner. At present, the first phase is to build 385 houses in the area. Having received the tender on 12 May, the company wasted no time and commenced construction on 5 June. Within four months many of the houses in DRC are near completion, some have been painted and the brickwork has been completed. Continued on Page 3

Swakop Community Wants NAMAs Back Courage Musariri

The Swakopmund business community has overwhelmingly expressed their desire to again host the 2015 Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMA) because

of the positive business impact it had on their businesses. The coastal town of Swakopmund yielded positive economic benefits after hosting this year’sContinued prestigiousonNAMAs Page 3 event. This was confirmed by NAMAs

Executive Chairman, Tim Ekandjo, based on a study conducted right after the event. Swakopmund Rest Camp manager, Lucas Nghitaunapo, said they accommodated up to 300 people during the time of the event and made profits in the region of N$116100. “We really made enough profit, thanks to the awards. It also helped us market our services through word of mouth as we continued to receive clients referred to us by those who slept here,” he said. West Coast FM managing partner,

Clinton Lang said the radio station’s listenership increased during the awards as popular musicians from Windhoek showed up for live interviews. “We want the show to come back again next year, because it shows they care about our town and there are upcoming musicians here who need exposure,” he said. Barber Endurance’s Friday Ekesi added that he received more customers the afternoon before the award ceremony therefore he wants the show to be held in

Swakopmund again. “The NAMAs event increased tourist attraction for this holiday destination town and helped market Namibian music more.” According to Paulina Moses, the event provided music lovers in the town with just more than just entertainment. Continued on Page 3

Company Excels in Swakop

Mass Housing Project Continued from Page 1 By comparison, across the road, a similar construction project is only at the stage of setting the foundation, although the tender was awarded on the same date for all constructors. According to managing director Paulus Shipoke, Power Oyeno encouraged DRC residents to form their own companies to benefit from the general labour

work. He also encouraged “women-run companies” and paid for the new company “Seahawk” registration so that they can work on the project. The construction project employs up to 800 people, of which at one stage 60% were female workers. Most of the products used for construction are also locally manufactured. “We are putting direct income into the DRC, we

actually brought change to the economy of this place,” project manager Isaak Muchenga commented. He further explained that because their rates with subcontractors are based on their minimum wages there have been no accusations of underpayment. Mr Shipoke said that although at the moment they are ahead of schedule, the company

faces future challenges because about 1000 plots allocated for building are currently occupied and the people need to be moved for the work to continue, a task that they will undertake together with the local authority. However, DRC residents have previously met such initiatives with hostility, for fear of becoming homeless. The cheapest houses under construction are known as “Core 5” and cost N$221 000 to build, while three-bedroom houses known as Onduli cost N$470 000 to build. However, the Government is in the process of introducing subsidies to make the housing project more affordable. The total cost of the Power Oyeno mass housing project is N$170 million.

Swakop Community Wants NAMAs Back

“Bearing in mind that there is not much entertainment here, we were provided with a marvellous opportunity to mix and mingle with our local artists. Swakopmund has the biggest venue for such events and also enough accommodation. For these reasons and more I think the show should be hosted here again,” she said. The NAMAs were hosted for the first time outside Windhoek and over N$ 1million was spent during the course of the weekend. “We wanted to understand whether industries and rather which industries benefitted the most. Therefore, we interviewed different

players in the hospitality, transport, accommodation, car rentals, retail, clothing stores, convenience stores and restaurants sectors to understand whether they had indeed experienced positive growth during the NAMA’s weekend. “We were not surprised that all of them expressed the same positive sentiments. We also asked if they would recommend that the event be held in their town again next year and they all said they would gladly welcome the NAMAs back based on the positive revenues,” Ekandjo stated. He said for MTC, this was not about staging an event of huge significance but to ensure that the businesses not only hear

about the NAMAs being held in their town, but they also experience the event through their sales figures. “I can therefore confidently state that we have achieved this economic objective and that it was indeed an excellent return on investment for the town of Swakopmund,” Ekandjo stated. “Restaurants were packed with guests, car rentals were fully booked, hotels and B&B’s were fully booked, clothing shops were packed with guests doing last minute shopping for their attire, carwashes were packed, barbershops had long queues, entertainment areas were abuzz with patrons - all thanks to the NAMAs.” According to Ekandjo they will always make their expectations clear with any town that expresses interest in hosting the event. “They have to know that accommodation for all nominees and venue cost would have to be borne by them as their contribution, because these are ordinary costs that would not exist if

Continued from Page 1 we were to host the event in Windhoek.” The event is estimated to have raked in more than N$3 million with the Swakopmund business community being the major beneficiaries. Sharing the same sentiments as Ekandjo was the Vice Chairperson of the Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry Swakopmund Branch, Hafeni Heinrich, who said business during the NAMA’s weekend was abundant. “It was indeed a welcomed event that benefits the town and the economy of Swakopmund greatly. The crest of business during the weekend was abundant and as players in the tourist industry, I for one noticed the brisk business that happened," Heinrich said. “I would not hesitate to mobilise the business community of Swakopmund to come on board if the organising committee of the NAMAs brings it to Swakopmund again, we would welcome it with great nobleness [sic],” he said. Already the organising committee has started planning for next year’s event and they plan to engage all interested parties in their bid to find a host, three months before entries open for next year’s competition.

Animal Free Circus Coming to Coast – YAY! VACANCY Qualified Plumbers

Wanted

Tanya Calitz Circus is usually synonymous with animals, but with a conscious awakening over the last decade the very thought of an animal laden circus in today’s era is enough to raise the hairs and hackles on any right thinking person. In the light of this, locals will be delighted to know that the Zip Zap Circus School that will be visiting the coast in December is an animal free

circus. For years people have flocked to circuses to see wild and exotic animals perform incredible tricks, while many did not realise the excruciating pain and suffering these animals have to endure to please the crowds by performing these ridiculous acts. As fascinating as it might seem to see a bear ride a bicycle or an elephant doing head stands, the torture they had to survive far outweighs the amusement. Thus the Zip Zap Circus

Animals are forced into cages for hours while travelling or inbetween training sessions and resting comes as a breath of fresh air, focussing on social upliftment, rather than animal showbiz. A c c o r d i n g to Zip Zap’s Communications and Events Officer Marcelle Richards, they are a social development circus school with the aim to take ‘ordinary’ kids (including youth-atrisk) and provide them with the resources to develop skills. They do this through the medium of Circus Arts, which will develop them as young leaders, good citizens, ambassadors for South Africa, and make them eminently employable. “The Circus School provides innovative cutting edge professional training and entertainment, thereby providing opportunities for youth to fulfil their potential and contributing to the growth of a healthy nation,” Richards says. The paper asked Richards whether it was a conscious decision to make the circus animal free, to which he replied, “We do not specifically have a stance on circuses featuring animals in them, but focus on our own aim of uplifting the youth.” Thanks to investigative journalism, pro-animal organisations like PETA and the SPCA and members of the public, some heinous acts done to circus animals were exposed, which created much needed awareness of

Opposition Party Preaches Unconstitutional Practices

Lavrenty Repin The CDV (Christian Democratic Voice) is a political party registered to participate in the upcoming elections. Their aim is to change the constitution of Namibia so that it becomes a non-secular state, also altering the law, education and 50/50 gender representation practices, hinting at something akin to a theocratic state. We spoke to the party and the ECN to see the

legitimacy of such undertakings. CDV presidential candidate, Mr Gotthardt Kandume, told the Namib Independent telephonically, “Our initial fight will be the changing of the constitution. We are a secular state in a country where 95% are Christians – this is confusing people. A government functioning without God doesn’t make sense.” He said the choice to change the constitution is formulated because the current Government has been “hostile towards churches,”

mentioning that before Independence, Christianity was promoted by the state. When asked what would happen to Namibians who hold other believes, Party Secretary Michael Nawabeb said, “Everyone has his freedom. Of course we will really try to bring back those that don’t believe in God. Maybe something is driving them to not believe? We will focus on a dialogue, create workshops and look at how we can change the policy.” However, Mr Kandume added, “We don’t judge, it’s the people’s choice, we don’t even discriminate against homo-sexual [individuals].” Mr Kandume then said that his party does not agree with the 50/50 gender equality initiative. “In the bible, the man is the head of the house,” he said. “The 50/50, at the grassroots level, is creating the violence in this country. 50/50 for what?” The presidential candidate also mentioned that if they win, they will look into changing the law system of Namibia. “We will look at courts, to base them on the principle of the bible. All the law comes from the bible. [Changing] the punishments according to the bible, we will also look into that,” he explained. Mr Kandume also spoke out against the school curriculum, saying, “I will not go along with it. We will totally change that. Everyone, ever learner needs to know that they are created by God, everyone. Before Independence, we had bible studies in school, we were respecting our elders because of the Ten Commandments. We will make the bible compulsory in school.” CDV is not the first party to promote such institutions; in their manifesto, The Republican Party also said that it “rejects the concept of Namibia as a secular state” and will amend it so

that “Namibia must be a nation in submission to the Almighty God.” Although the manifesto adds that it will “guard against any derogation or suspension of the fundamental rights of… freedom of religion,” it then says that the “Republican Party will apply all its efforts to have the entire education system be changed to ensure that our education system is based on Christian principles with Christian Science as a subject and daily devotion to be instituted at all schools.” Presidential candidate, Mr Henk Mudge, did not answer calls for comment. Secularism in Namibia is a fundamental constitutional right; mentioned in the first paragraph of the document. This is to ensure that power and law of the country stays in the hands of the people. Secularism is asserting the right to be free from religious rule and teachings, or, in a state declared to be neutral on matters of belief, from the imposition by government of religion or religious practices upon its people. Responding to our query, the Electoral Commission of Namibia, responsible for registering political parties, outlined in the code of conduct that “No political party may exclude or restrict membership of the political party on the grounds of sex, race, colour, ethnic origin, religion, creed or social or economic status. “The CDV had complied with all requirements relating to registration as a political party in Namibia, including the upholding of the fundamental bill of rights within their own constitution. However, if the message that the CDV or any other political party is giving out is in contradiction of this, than it is a violation of the constitution and any party aggrieved or in possession of such information should lodge a complaint.” A psychology lecturer at the University of Namibia, Dr. Armas Abdul Malik Shikongo, explained in an opinion piece earlier this year that in Article 1, Point 2 of Chapter 1 in our Constitution, it “clearly states that ‘all powers shall vest in the people of Namibia who shall exercise the sovereignty through the democratic institutions of the State.’ ‘All powers’ here can be understood to exclude any sharing of powers, say, between God and the people of Namibia.” Concluding that “for some of us, all fundamental freedoms are just as crucial as freedom of speech, association, movement and thought, as these freedoms are intractably and practically linked and must equally be celebrated by all Namibians.”

Me Vote? Why Waste My Time Opinion Piece by Gareth Amos So the elections are once again upon us, less the tickertape parades, posters and political rallies. Attack adverts, mind numbing slogans (think, Yes we can) and empty promises of change and hope are conscious only in their absence. Is it only I or are we amid a perfect electoral storm devoid of coupling of electrons (excuse the pun) and protons required to

inject electrical currents called upon to make the storm at least ever so slightly noteworthy? At all turns I would have to call myself a social and political junkie, inquisitive to the core as to who gets to play ruler for a predetermined arbitrary slice of time in the life of a country. However, when matters are close to home, my interest dwindles significantly to the point that I must confess the only interest I can finger in my mind

is the interest found within the confines of disinterest and no other. I recall laughing my arse off at the human chameleon that is Sacha Baron Cohen, better known as Borat or in this particular instance as Ali G the British rapper and bad boy, who posed the question (straight-laced no less) to a balding British bull dog of a politician, “Is it cuz I is black?” At this juncture in life, I find myself asking the same question, “Is it cuz I is white?” There, I said it, I have officially dropped the “W-Bomb” for better or for worse. Because I am white, I know whites. I like to think that I know we think, what we think and why we think as we do. I know that we were once fanatical about voting when the ou finger wagging krokidil with cohorts in tow would grace our town halls with fire and brimstone “politieks” warning the terrified populace of the ever present reds under our beds and of course die groot swart gevaar. To the untrained or uninitiated mind one would be forgiven their particular pennant for colours. Even back then though, voting was not that straight forward. There were many folk within the white German and English

speaking communities who did not principally agree upon the specificity of the levels of gevaar likely to befall us at any minute, who could found no synergy or solace in the political parties served upon the electoral role. Back then things quite literally were black or white. In those stormy and surreal days I cast my lot on a single occasion only… on the day common sense prevailed and the ballot before us provided for the first time a sense of sanity… keep the madness? End the madness? A no brainer choice that finally warranted my time. Today, though like so many other whites, I have lost the fire in my belly, the passion long since extinguished. It is the young of mind and heart that seeks to right the wrong forever doomed to tilt at the windmills of injustice. Though in the case of Namibia, what is to become of the young upstart when all the windmills of the land are banished forever to the pages of history? The fire dies. Today, we find ourselves entirely disinterested for disenfranchisement in the political landscape. Today the tickertape parades pass our line of sight. Our town halls stand bare as the political rallies now take place in

football stadiums we purposefully built as far from our own dwelling as possible. The tables now turned. Today, together with the majority of minorities in our country the sentiment is that we are all outcast, exiled, forever banished to the political wilderness. Even if we were to throw our voice into the political babble, will it be heard and, more sobering a thought, do our words and thoughts carry credence? Are we relevant in the political sphere at all? Whenever I throw this very temperate question at my Caucasian brethren the answer is an emphatic no, who gives a sh*t anyway. “SWAPO is going to win anyway, no matter what. Even if all the opposition were one party, it would matter not a jot,” is the sincere sentiment of the white majority. As a firebrand humanitarian, the self-imposed isolation from the political winds of our nation is in contrary to the very make up of my person, though the truth remains fact, now is not our time. We spent ours unwisely, I am afraid and now we sit on the side-lines - lucky observers of one of the greatest shows on earth, as the invention of a nation unfolds before us.

A Swakopmund community outreach program is spearheading prisoner rehabilitation through counselling sessions, which may just give stigmatised inmates a chance for a better life. Attending one of the early counselling session at the Swakomund prison reminded me of a regular high school class, except that the “learners” were attentive and wellbehaved. The irony did not escape me, for I looked over to a nervous inmate sitting quietly in the corner, nursing a fresh black eye on a beat up face. It was his first day at the counselling session and he sat silent and crosslegged, listening to the fifth step philosophy in a 12-step program. However, by the end of the session he stood up and said, “It’s my first day, but I already feel motivated. I believe I will become a better person.” The rest of the class clapped and some offered to get him up to date with the steps. In this dark Swakopmund prison classroom, 20 inmates of different ages, tribes and offences - ranging from theft to assault sat and quietly listened as Hambodi Pennina told them they “can live a satisfying life, even behind bars.” One by one, they thanked her for the insight. Another prisoner shared, “We must feel thankful, we are lucky to get this chance. The more I open up, the deeper I go, the better I feel.” Hambodi Pennina is the founder of the Necessity Wellness Profession, a community outreach organisation working on a number of counselling projects since last year. She is a qualified social worker who, since August this year, has given inmates an opportunity they have never had before: simple but vital counselling. “The target now is to reduce re-offending. Although currently we deal only with inmates in prison, they need aftercare. Eventually we plan to run a recovery centre,” Ms Pennina explained. There is a definite pattern of reoffending. She detailed how most of the inmates she works with have re-offended; some have returned to prison up to eight times. This is as clear an indication as any that the current system is failing to address key issues. This, however, is not exclusive to Namibia. In the USA, where prisoner rehabilitation is not fully implemented, two-thirds of prisoners re-offend within three years of leaving prison. On the other hand in Norway, where prisoner rehabilitation is the only priority of a prison, re-offending rates are at a mere 16%. Namibian prisoners face a life of repression and violence, while carrying a stigma as obvious as a prison tattoo that often haunts them their entire life. Few prisons are as neat and well-kept as the Swakopmund prison. The 70 inmates enjoy activities such as playing soccer at the Vineta sports field twice a week. This is probably why the new, non-profit, nongovernment prisoner rehabilitation program

DECODER

has flourished since its implementation in August. Still, living conditions in Namibian prisons are often inhumane. For instance, according to a University of Wyoming study in Namibia, at least 12 percent of the prison population in the country is infected with HIV/AIDS, although the percentage may be much higher due to underreporting. The prisoners face substandard nutrition and sanitation, violence, rape, consensual unprotected sex and inadequate staffing in prisons, while the criminalisation of sodomy has resulted in a prohibition on the distribution of condoms in prisons. The real worrying fact, though, is that Namibia currently ranks among the top five African countries with the highest per-capita rates of imprisonment. With 267 per 100,000 people currently serving sentences in prison or in pre-trial detention, the study found that both prison and pre-trial detention conditions fail to meet domestic and international legal standards. Which brings us back to the worrying question: how do we decrease crime and imprisonment, before we experience an explosion in law offenders - the likes of which we know from South Africa. With confirmed incidences of daily violence, gang activity, overcrowding, forced and consensual unprotected sex, malnutrition, corruption, and poor health care, the one tool at our disposal is prisoner rehabilitation. Instead of punishment, the implementation of treatment will serve a long way for the future of Namibia. The crevice between offenders and law abiding citizens is a lot smaller than most people believe. Many countries are filtering the rehabilitations process to find out “what works”, thus the stage is set for Namibia to take up these proven solutions and implement them accordingly. The 12-step method has certainly stood the test of time, and with more such programs, tailored to our system, rehabilitation into society can grow organically. What is important now is to support such vital initiatives that restructure the fundamental social attitude of our country. It has been a long and difficult journey for Ms Pennina, who started the organisation single-handedly, without any sponsors or outside support. She had the idea of prison rehabilitation in 2011, however it was challenging to get permission for her project. Eventually a trip to Windhoek to discuss the possibility with the Prison’s Commissioner gave her the green light. In the future, if Ms Pennina receives sponsorship, she plans to introduce gym activates for the inmates, as well as educational support. However, she relies heavily on fundraising. The latest, assisted by West Coast FM, was to raise money for the municipality registration fee of N$500. If you would like to assist, email Ms Pennina on nwprofessioncc@gmail. com

New Container Operations Record for Walvis Bay The Port Of Walvis Bay achieved a new record for handling cargo on a single container vessel in the shortest time possible. In 2011, with the implementation of the WAFMAX vessels, 42.6 berth moves per hour (BMPH) was recorded. This record was improved during 2012 to 46.76 BMPH. On 29 September 2014 the record was smashed and set to 56.09 BMPH on a Maersk Line operated vessel. The calculation of moves per hour is based on the berth arrival and departure, referred to as “first line down” and “last line up” — that is, the actual arrival and departure of the vessel at berth and referred to as unadjusted gross berth productivity, otherwise called berth moves per hour. Although the crane density of a vessel and maximum equipment availability plays a huge role in achieving high berth moves per hour, one of the biggest contributing factors are the close working relationship between Maersk Namibia and Namport. The cooperation between the two organisations to have a smooth vessel operation shows the willingness and capability of Namport to attract strategic business from around the world. The E.R. Bremerhaven had a total of 1206 operational moves that were performed in 21.5 hours. Louis Maletzky was the vessel agent from the local Maersk office.

Know Your Breast Density

Tara van Eck October is breast cancer awareness month, everybody knows that. But did you know that your breast density may play a role in you developing breast cancer? On Saturday, 11 October you will have a chance to get yourself checked out in Swakopmund. The papsmear and breast examination clinic will be held at Mediclinic from 8h00 to 14h00, which is a great opportunity to get a mammogram. Only a mammogram can determine your breast density,

which can range from not dense, almost all fatty tissue to extreme dense, little fatty tissue. Researchers found that a higher density may increase risks of breast cancer. Breast density has nothing to do with how firm or big your breasts are, so a mammogram is the only reliable way to find out. If you are premenopausal, try scheduling your mammogram in the first two weeks of your menstrual cycles, as breast density is lower then. On a mammogram, dense breast tissue as well as masses and tumours appear white while fatty tissue looks black.

Although dense breast tissue makes recognising growths more difficult, most breast tumours can be detected in a mammogram. Early detection is the key to successful treatment, so use this opportunity to get yourself checked – bad news now is better than worse news later, after all. For more information on the examination clinic this Saturday, you can visit the cancer association’s website at www.can.org.na. Image

LIFESTYLE Moderate Alcohol Intake

Affects Sperm Quality Just five units of alcohol could diminish a man’s opportunity to produce children, says a new research. The study, published in the journal BMJ Open, examined 1,200 Danish male military recruits between the ages of 18 and 28 years, all of whom underwent a medical examination between 2008 and 2012. As part of the assessment they were asked about their drinking habits and invited to provide sperm and blood samples. The researchers found that for men, who habitually drank heavily, there was a clear link between alcohol intake

and quality of sperm, reports femalefirst. co.uk. The research found the effects occurred when more than 7.5 units of alcohol a week were consumed; the average pint of beer contains around 2.3 units, while some lagers are stronger than this. “This is, to our knowledge, the first study among healthy young men with detailed information on alcohol intake, and given the fact that young men in the western world [drink a lot], this is a public health concern, and could be a contributing factor to the low sperm count

reported among [them],” researchers said in the study. The more a man drank, the less sperm he made and the more abnormal it was in shape and size; the effect was apparent after just 7.5 units a week – although it was particularly strong after 37.5 units a week. Hence it is advised that men do not regularly consume more than 21 to 28 units of alcohol a week. Source: http://indianexpress.com/

Short, Intense Workouts Boost Memory An intense workout for as little as 20 minutes can enhance episodic or long term memory about previous events by about 10 percent in healthy young adults, say researchers. Many existing studies have shown that long aerobic exercises like running can boost memory but the present study had participants lift weights just once every two days before testing them. “Even without doing expensive

MRI scans, our results give us an idea of what areas of the brain might be supporting these exercise-induced memory benefits,” said Audrey Duarte, an associate professor from the Georgia Institute of Technology’ school of psychology in the US. For the study, the team showed 90 photos to the participants on a computer screen before they started stretching their legs. The participants returned to the lab 48 hours later and saw a series

of 180 pictures – the 90 originals were mixed in with 90 new photos. Those who exercised remembered about 60 percent of the photos. “Our study indicates that people do not have to dedicate large amounts of time to give their brain a boost,” said Lisa Weinberg, a Georgia Tech graduate student who led the project. Although the study used weight exercises, resistance activities such as squats or knee bends would likely

produce the same results, noted Weinberg. “The findings are encouraging because they are consistent with rodent literature that pinpoints exactly the parts of the brain that play a role in memory benefits caused by exercise,” concluded Lisa Weinberg. The study appeared in the journal Acta Psychologica. Source: http://indianexpress.com/

It’s a Lifestyle Thing! On Saturday last the Walvis Bay community got to see just how strong our local lads and ladies are when Will’s Gym hosted their annual strongman competition. We will let the pictures speak for themselves.

W o r l dwid e Ocean Warming May Be Drastically Underestimated New climate model and satellite data suggests that ocean warming from 1970 to 2004 in the upper levels of the Southern Hemisphere’s oceans has been massively underestimated. The findings are reported in two new studies in the journal Nature Climate Change. "This underestimation is a result of poor sampling prior to the last decade and limitations of the analysis methods that conservatively estimated temperature changes in data-sparse regions," said oceanographer Paul Durack from Lawrence Livermore National

Laboratory, lead author of one of the papers. The findings are important because oceans absorb about 90 percent of the planet's excess heat, and the Southern Hemisphere accounts for 60 percent of the world's oceans. The latest data suggests that the planet is warming faster than previously thought. "By using satellite data, along with a large suite of climate model simulations, our results suggest that global ocean warming has been underestimated by 24 to 58 percent," Durack said in a press release. "The conclusion that warming has

been underestimated agrees with previous studies, however it is the first time that scientists have tried to estimate how much heat we have missed." In 2004, researchers began collecting more accurate measurements by deploying 3,600 robotic measuring devices, called Argo floats, which relayed information on the heat stored in the upper layers of the world's ocean currents. Determining how fast the oceans are warming relates directly to how fast the atmosphere is warming and how much sea levels will rise, the

researchers wrote. "Our other new study on deepocean warming found that from 2005 to the present, Argo measurements recorded a continuing warming of the upper-ocean," said co-author Felix Landerer of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, who contributed to both studies. "Using the latest available observations, we are able to show that this upper-ocean warming and satellite measurements are consistent." Source:

Goat Which Fell From Roof A schoolboy was killed when a sacrificial goat jumped off a roof and landed on his head. Heval Yildirim was playing with friends when the animal – which also died – plummeted six floors from the top of a block of flats. The 13-year-old’s father, Mehmet, had brought the goat into town to sacrifice on Muslim feast day Eid al-Adha. He could not find anywhere suitable to keep it so stowed it on the roof above the family’s home on

the top floor. "I am devastated but what more can I say?" he said. "In fact, there is nothing at all to say." Police said they were investigating Heval’s death in Diyarbakir, south-eastern Turkey, adding it was the first such case they had heard of. Coastal

Hot off the back of the Nissan Qashqai launch, Nissan South Africa has launched the new X-Trail. The X-Trail sits above Juke and Qashqai and appeals to the family that requires a bit more space in their SUV with aspirations of off-road adventure holidays. Previously the X-Trail sold on its rugged looks and comfortable ride together with the practicality of a mid-to-large size SUV. Now though, the X-Trail has softened up its appearance but claims to be just as capable off-road with more features and even more practicality. Space is up The overall length and width of the new X-Trail remains very similar to the outgoing model but the major change is the wheelbase. The new model has a 75mm longer wheelbase and Nissan says that this makes more room inside the cabin for people. It does, rear legroom is ample and the seats have the ability to slide forward and recline for added comfort and adaptability. The rear seats can be folded flat as well, upping load space considerably. The front passenger seat can also be folded flat, which should please canoe enthusiasts or long-boarders who do not like to carry their toys on the roof. The new X-Trail has the option of seven seats, which obviously reduces boot loading space when they are in use. Boot space in the seven-seater is 135 litres whilst the standard five-seater has 550 litres.

two petrol and one diesel engine. The petrol’s are both naturally aspirated and come in 2 litre (106kW, 200Nm, twowheel drive) guise or 2.5 litre (126kW, 233Nm, all-wheel drive). The 2 litre feels a little sluggish up at altitude where the launch took place, but Nissan seems sure that new turbocharged variants will become available in the near future. The 2.5 litre was only available to drive for a short time on the off-road course that had been set up for us to test the X-Trail’s skills on. There is a rotary dial to swap the from two-wheel drive to all-wheel drive. A quick press of the VDC (traction control) button and you are ready to crest mounds, descend ravines with hilldescent control and enjoy life in the great outdoors. The X-Trail proved capable over the course and the electronics did a good job of sending power to the correct wheels when traction was lost. The pick of the engine range though is the 1.6 litre turbo diesel. With 96kW it might not sound like much, but it is teamed with 320Nm of torque which gives the X-Trail the shove that it needs to be capable on the road.

Ride and Drive The X-Trail has maintained its comfortable ride and feels smooth on the road. One of the great features of a SUV that is not trying to be sporty, is that you get a comfortable ride and a vehicle that is not averse to the odd bump or pothole in the road. Steering is acceptable; it is well-weighted and complete with multiEngines function controls for the radio and cruise Nissan has introduced the X-Trail with control.
