The Electricity Control Board (ECB) has granted Erongo RED an increased electricity tariff of 6.9 percent for the 2016 – 2017 period. The new electricity tariff for the said period was announced by Erongo RED Chief Executive Officer, Robert Kahimise, at Walvis

Bay on Tuesday. Kahimise said Erongo RED is mindful that any increase in electricity prices represents a significant cost to its customers, especially for low income and financially vulnerable ones. To assist these customers, the company recommended an average of 3.1 percent for this group and the

request was favourably considered for the 2016/2017 period and the pensioners and low income group will thus only get an average increase from 3.1 percent to 4.8 percent. Kahimise explained that the ECB has granted NamPower a tariff increase of 16.71 percent, however the impact on Continued on Page 3

Male circumcision took centre stage during the opening of the Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) clinic in Swakopmund, where celebrity rap artist 'The Dogg' has endorsed this project, in the fight against HIV and AIDS. An enlightening function held at the Swakopmund State Hospital last week, provided statistics and facts around the benefits of VMMC, "a simple medical

procedure", which could substantially reduce Namibia's HIV risk factor. Bernard Haufiku (Minister Health & Siocial Services) said, "The Ministry has a strategy in place for reducing HIV/Aids, and our aim is to circumcise at least 34 000 men nationwide before 2017. Since the start of the new Swakopmund VMCC clinic in May, a total of 660 men have been circumcised. Continued on Page 3

Maria Davel-Wallis They were determined to go and to conquer – and that is exactly what the Cgals vocal ensemble of the coast has done. This past week they did Namibia proud at the World Choir Games in Sochi, Russia, where they were the first African choir for 2016, to receive Gold. They emerged as winners of the category: Musica Sacra with accompaniment after competing against 500 choirs represented from over 70 countries world-wide. The Cgals, conducted by their founder-leader, Wilna Liebenberg, was the first choir from Africa this year to receive a Gold medal at the 2016 World Choir Games. (Namibia’s First ever Gold medal at the World Choir Games

had been won by the late Ernst van Biljon at the “6th World Choral Olympic Games in Shaoxing, China in July 2010, for the Folklore (Professional Round) category”.) The Cgals worked very hard the past two years, to be at their best at the 2016 World Choir Games – and all the hard work made sense the moment the announcement was made: The Cgals Chamber Choir was the winner of the Open Category for Musica Sacra with Accompaniment – with a score of 23,2. They were awarded the Gold Medal in that category. The four works they presented were Victor C Johnson’s Deo Dicamus Gratias, Linda Spevacek’s Festival Te Deum, Daniel E Gawthrop’s Psalm 39, and Brad Printz’s Benedicamus Domino. In a video that the choir sent to Namib Independent, they shared the unforgettable moment, when the announcement was made. The Cgals Chamber Choir had also been invited to sing in an Interkultur Concert in Sochi, and in the Closing Ceremony of the World Choir Games. They will return to Namibia on 19 July.

Electricity price hike Continued from Page 1 Erongo RED is 14.7 percent and as a result of Nampower's announced increase, Erongo RED also has to increase its tariff accordingly. Initially, he said, Erongo RED proposed a 4.7 percent average increase with the assumption that NamPower will receive a 10 percent tariff increase, but after Nampower was granted 16.71 percent, they had to go back and remodel their tariff application. “Thus, Erongo RED applied for 6.8 percent tariff increase for the 2016/2017 period. The Electricity Control Board, after a thorough review of our tariff application,

granted Erongo RED an effective average tariff increase of 6.9 percent,” said Kahimise. He said, as of the first of July 2016, Erongo RED will pass on an average tariff increase of 6.9 percent to its customers. He said this increase is the weighted average of different tariff categories applied to different groups of customers in the Erongo Region. “This means that the actual impact on consumers differs due to different consumption patterns,” he added. Kahimise also announced that, in 2015/2016, Erongo RED spent

almost N$15 million subsidising the cost of electricity on pensioners and low income groups of the community and this subsidy supports over 10 000 customers through the region of which 4 827 are pensioners registered with the company. “In addition to the consumption, Erongo RED subsidises the prepaid box installation for the pensioners and low income group. In other word, these groups do not pay for the pre-paid box and the installation thereof,” said Kahimise.

US Ambassador to Namibia Thomas Daughton walks throught the Swakopmund VMMC Clinic, with Nikki Soboil (Programme Director), Minister of Health and Social Services, Bernard Haufiku, and Councillor Juuso Kambueshe (back) (Photo Donna Collins) "It has been scientifically proven that the relative risk for becoming infected with HIV was 60%, lower in circumcised men, as well as other sexually transmitted infections," said Haufiku. "We must carry this message to the people of every region and motivate men to become circumcised through this programme in order to achieve an AIDS free generation in Namibia." Introducing him as the "guest of honour", Haufiku welcomed celebrated musician and VMCC Ambassador 'The Dogg' to the podium. The Dogg is throwing his weight behind the cause and will be travelling to all regions in support of getting the "smart cut". Thomas Daughton, U.S. Ambassador said that they have injected N$100million into this VMMC campaign, which is spearheaded in the Erongo Region, plus aimed at the Oshana, Zambezi and Khomas regions. He claimed that by adding VMMC to other pillars of combination prevention, this greatly strengthens the country's ability to reduce new HIV infections. Daughton also stated that to reach their goal of circumcising their quota, they need to operate on at least 75 men every day. He said as it stands today only 31% of men between the ages of 15 and 49 in the Erongo Region are circumcised, and that nearly one in seven Namibian adults are infected with the HIV virus. He said that the scale-up campaign, launched in the Erongo Region, is being rolled out countrywide, but pointed out that the Erongo Region is of particular importance, due to the fact that men from all corners of Namibia are drawn to the region for jobs.

The main regional VMMC clinic is based in Swakopmund, with another fixed site located in the Kuisebmund Health Centre in Walvis Bay. Several outreach sites where VMCC services are available, will be made more accessible in rural areas, plus men working in the fishing and mining sector. "The next two years will be crucial in our collective responsive to HIV, but experts do tell us that Namibia is getting close to controlling its HIV epidemic," added Daughton. Meanwhile Nikki Soboil (Programme Director), said that the VMMC clinic in Swakopmund has been functioning for a few months prior to its official opening. The procedures are performed by a team of registered nurses, who are fully VMMC trained. Soboil said that on average they are circumcising between 20 and 30 men a day, and want to reach a figure of 50 a day. She said the procedure takes an hour, with minimum down time to recover. After the procedure it is important to note that men stick to all the guidance given by the health workers to ensure proper healing. With about 20% of Namibia's male population circumcised, much of it done traditionally because of health benefits, the VMMC is now offering this procedure to be done in health facilities meeting agreed safety standards and focusing on minimising pain and discomfort. It was also said that whilst circumcision is not a miracle cure for aids, it greatly reduces the risk of HIV, but it is important to still use condoms and practice safe sex at all times.

The Maersk Highlander, which was anchored just within Walvis Bay waters, was indeed a majestic site yesterday evening, when the strong East winds subsided in favour of calm seas and a stunning sunset. The Maersk Oil Rig was being transported on a heavy lift vessel, the Dockwise Transporter, and stopped in Walvis Bay on Monday morning en route to Inverness in Scotland for supplies, some technical work and a crew change. Logistics Support Services acted as the agents for the vessel and also carried out the clearing and forwarding of the supplies, and the co-ordination of the technical work. The operation was challenged by the high winds experienced in the mornings, which meant rescheduling some of the tasks to the afternoons, but the project was completed successfully and the vessel sailed at 10.00 am on Wednesday morning. Logos Hope to bring hope to Namibia Absalom Shigwedha

FOR the first time ever, a group 400 people from different countries over the world will visit the Port of Walvis Bay from Saturday, bringing knowledge and hope to needy Namibians. This group of people will be aboard the German-made Logos Hope ship, the world's largest floating book fair. Logos Hope offers an expansive selection of over 5 000 titles of books at affordable prices and they cover a wide range of subjects from science, sports, hobbies and family life. Additionally, the rest of the Visitor Experience Deck is also open for the public to explore. The Logos Hope Project Coordinator, Mareike Fritschen, told a press conference at Walvis Bay on

Monday that the ship will have on board 400 crew members of sixty nationalities, who are all volunteers who will be involve in a number of charitable drives to help the needy communities in Wavis Bay and Swakopmund. “They are all volunteers, even the captain,” said Fritschen from Germany who has been working on the vessel for 22 months now. She explained that the vessel will be in Namibia from 16 – 27 July and will be bringing knowledge and hope to Namibians. “We want to know the people's needs, to show that they are important to us,” she said, adding that the work that they will do in Namibia, will also include medical care and clean drinking water. She said Logos Hope will also send a team to the Topnaars to provide them with clean drinking water, while other teams will

be sent to the Rise and Shine Ministries, Westside High School, Tutaleni Primary School and the Sunshine Centre (for physically challenged) to provide assistance to these schools and centres. She explained that there are also onboard special events arranged like the drama “The Skin, the Witch and the Wardrobe” (17 – 24 July, tickets: N$50), performed by their crew members, a Cultural Café, to show visitors what they eat, and cultural performances (17 July from 13:30 – 16:00 and 18: 30 – 20: 00, tickets: N$20). There is also school visit slot on board, whereby about 300 school children will be given a chance to learn more about the different cultures of the crew-members. Fritschen said typically, the time for one to be on the Logos Hope is two years but, some people stay for shorter periods like three months. Apart from doing charitable work to help needy people around the world, the vessel also gives training on different fields to its crew members and when a person is done with his or her work, he or she is given a certificate of recognition for participating in a charitable vessel. A 24-year-old Namibian, Benizo Smith Junior from Walvis Bay is also a crew member of the Logos Hope. Smith

Junior, who joined the vessel in May this year and works in the Book Fair, said he is excited that the ship will visit his home town. He said Namibia is a land full of potential and he believes that Logos Hope will activate the light in Walvis Bay. The ship will arrive at the Port of Walvis Bay on Friday around 16:00 and the crew members will be waving flags of different nationalities and play music on board. The official opening will take place on Saturday by Vice-President Dr Nickey Iyambo from 10:00 – 12:00. The ship will then be open to the public from 16 - 27 July and opening hours will be as follows: Sunday – Tuesday 14:00 – 20:30, Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 – 20:30. Note that on Saturday, 16 July, visits will take place from 14:00 – 20:30. The entrance fee is N$5 per person and children under the age of 12 and senior citizens over 65 will enter without charge. Children must be accompanied by an adult and entrance will be through the Namport South Gate, c/o 5th Road and Atlantic Street. Logos Hope will leave Namibia on 28 July for Libreville, Gabon (West Africa).

Shack fire inferno alarms Swakop Fire department

Swakopmund's Fire Department Heads, Gerhard Kotzee and Adri Goosen, are beefing up their department with six new fire fighting appointments. (Photo Donna Collins) Donna Collins Swakopmund witnessed the largest recorded shack fire this year when around 20 shacks were gutted in the Mondessa DRC settlement at the weekend. This has alarmed the Fire department, who stated that this tragic incident has impacted on well over 25 families, leaving them homeless and destitute. Fuelled by the howling east wind conditions, the fire, which broke out on two separate occasions on Friday and Saturday, raged through the shacks reducing these make shift dwellings to ashes and rubble. This unfortunate incident has concerned the Swakopmund Fire Department who worked diligently to prevent the inferno from spreading. A concerned Adri Goosen (Fire Chief) said that this was one of the worst shack infernos in years. Fortunately no one was killed, but a man did sustain superficial burns to his arms whilst trying to help a woman and her children escape the flames. He did say that the families involved have sadly been stripped of their last earthly possessions, just at a time when we will move back into our cold winter climate. "By the time we reached the

scene, extensive damage had already incurred, because people in their panicked state often try and combat the fire first instead of calling the fire department immediately," he explained. He said that, with the growing number of people settling in Swakopmund, the volumes of shacks have increased at an alarming proportion, resulting in the need for the Fire Department to beef up its operation with more manpower. "We have an excellent fire station building and an amazing fleet of seven vehicles, including four fire fighters and two rescue vehicles, but we do not have enough manpower on the ground," said Deputy Fire Chief Gerhard Kotzee who was on the scene on both days. "Currently we are six people in our unit, which is too little, but thankfully we will be joined by two more fire fighters on the 1st August and the Municipality has approved four additional vacancies to be filled. "We plan on putting permanent fire officers and a fire fighting vehicle to man the DRC satellite fire station, and run it on a full time basis," he said. "As the town grows around us, we need to be better prepared, because there will always

be shack fires, and we want to make sure that we are better equipped to protect our people lives and their property in every manner possible." He said that the new fire fighters will be fully qualified men and women, who have received the necessary training from fire stations around the country, and will join the team that is already well equipped to do the task. Kotzee stated that most of the fires in Mondessa are caused from overloading of electricity, where up to eight shacks can be using a standard plug to electrify their dwellings through a network of leads that are exposed to the elements and, because of the tightly packed shack dwellings in Mondessa, the flames are easily spread. He did emphasise that most fires in the DRC are caused by lit candles inside the shacks, which are often left unattended, but are necessary due to a lack of electricity. It was mentioned that the Swakopmund Fire Department has always kept an excellent relationship with Neighbourhood Watch, various ambulance services and the Westcoast Safety Initiative as well as members of the public, to mention some.

Three shacks were gutted by fire at Walvis Bay's Kuisebmond suburb on Wednesday evening. The three shacks were erected on Erf 617 belonging to Agnes Goagoses in Brama Street and owners lost all their belongings in th incident. It is suspected that somebody knocked down a candle, which then developed into a full-blown fire. Goagoses also owned a shack on the erf. These pictures shows the remains of the burned shacks. The highlights

of East Weather

East winds raged at Mile4 this week, followed by a breath-taking sunset (Photo Donna Collins) Donna Collins As everyone will agree the 'dreaded' East Weather conditions kept up a strong presence for several days, starting in full force at the weekend when winds travelling at well over 20 km/h, mercilessly blowing sand in all directions. Trees were uprooted, sign posts went flying, roof tiles left the building, cars were sandblasted and the relentless winds deposited an unearthly mess into everyone's homes that not even 'Mr Min' could make right. Coupled with this, of course came the exhausting heat, which tested everyone's energy levels, especially for those of us used to the cool coast, with temperatures hitting over 35 degrees at the peak of the week, as well as high humidity levels. But as we all know, those of us lucky to be living at the coast, once the dust has settled the deck chairs are out, the wine glasses are clinking, and with it heralds a magnificent sunset that sinks lazily over the ocean in an array of orange hues. This was well enjoyed by the floods of South African holidaymakers

currently milling around in T-shirts and a tan, whilst making the most of all the outdoor activities on the menu. Despite the endless cleaning sprees and car washes, when the rest of the country is in the grip of winter at this time of the year, as well as a severe, depressing drought, only makes one truly count one's blessings to be living in this part of the world. But for those of you who are well and truly over it, the good news is that you can shake off your duffel coat and bring out your boots, because before long we will be plunged back into the mist, when you can light your fire and curl up with your cat in front of the 'box'. It might be an old wife's tail, but rumour has it, that the more aggressive the east wind conditions, the better the prospects there is of rain inland - an answer to the prayers of every farmer in the country. And since there was an absence of our howling sandy 'friend' for the past two years, it seems that the spell might have been broken this week, and that a good rainy season is expected to follow. Let’s hold thumbs.

CNFA calls for independent research on phosphate mining Absalom Shigwedha

Without proper independent and transparent environmental research by international, recognised, environmental scientists with enough knowledge and experience of the Benguela Marine Ecosystem, the potential environmental risks of the proposed Namibia Marine Phosphate's Sandpiper project cannot be highlighted enough, says the Confederation of Namibian Fishing Associations (CNFA). “This is why we are emphasising the absolute necessity for a research imposed Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) on the expected cumulative impacts from marine phosphate mining. This SEA needs to assess longterm implications before any decision is taken on whether or not to go ahead with mining,” CNFA chairperson Matti Amukwa said in a press statement released on the 7th of this month. Amukwa said that CNFA is not opposed to development and to the introduction of phosphate mining in Namibia, as long as it is not done at the expense and to the detriment of existing renewable resources that provide employment to more Namibians than the phosphate mining industry will ever do. “Bulk marine phosphate mining, if it goes ahead in the Namibian waters, will be a world first with all the risks associated with moving into the unknown. It is proposed that mining will commence in areas alongside Namibia's internationally recognised, world class fishing industry and may also threaten the unique and environmentally sensitive Benguela Marine Ecosystem,” he said.

Although NMP claims that they will provide Namibia's fertiliser needs and improve local food security, said Amukwa, agronomic and agricultural experts in Namibia have confirmed that, although phosphate is necessary for any crop production in the form of phosphorous, there is much higher requirement for nitrogen. “The fact is that the reason why Namibia has a problem with food security is because it is a dry country with extremely varying weather patterns. One can apply all the fertiliser in the world but without adequate rain, the crops will give low yields,” he argued. Amukwa explained that the Namibian fishing industry also helps towards meeting the country's food security needs and the Namibia Fish Consumption Trust, in particular, distributes large quantities of cheap but nutritious horse mackerel countrywide, and if “our fish resources are environmentally, negatively impacted, so will our food security.” He said their statement is in response to recent justifications by NMP that phosphate mining go ahead now as they have attained a mining license from the Ministry of Mines and Energy to commence with their Sandpiper project, estimated to yield 1.8 billion tons of phosphoric sand, carrying an estimated N$5.2 billion in investment capital, ranking it within the top three new mining projects. Amukwa said NMP stated that their Sandpiper project has been independently reviewed by accredited scientific peers, but these scientists cannot be considered as truly independent because they were appointed through the NMP Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) consultants and were paid by

NMP to do the job. NMP also said they were in compliance with the current environmental and mineral legislation and, to justify this, they issued the Environmental Commissioner's response in the media on 17thMay 2016, following the CNFA’s statement on 16 May 2016 that due process and availability of the information was not being complied with. “This was because interested and affected parties in the public were not getting access to the scientific verification report undertaken by NMP, a report which NMP are lobbying should now give them environmental clearance to mine,” Amukwa argued. He said the verification report has never been publicly advertised as available for review and interested and affected parties have never been informed of the verification report. Recently Knowledge Katti, a Board member of NMP, said that studies for the Sandpiper project were conducted by an international accredited agency, the International Fertiliser Development Corporation (IFDC), confirming through tests that Namibia's ocean contains at least 27.7 percent phosphate concentrate P205 and is suitable for use as a direct application fertiliser. The quality of its phosphate ranks within that of the top 3 global producers of DAPR. Regarding the earlier phosphate mining moratorium by the Cabinet, NMP said that, to date, there has not been any official announcement or proclamation of a legally binding enforceable moratorium on phosphate mining. Instead, only media reports have been issued of a Cabinet decision to support the call by the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources for a moratorium on the issue of environmental clearance for bulk mining of industrial minerals, including marine phosphate, for a period of 18 months from September 2013. That 18 month period elapsed in April 2015. When he gave his annual fishing industry address earlier this year at Walvis Bay, Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister, Bernhard Esau, said Namibia is determined to protect the Namibian living marine resources and conserve the marine ecosystem. “The Ministry's concern that the removal of the soft sediment, along with all the living animals and the suspension of fine sediment into the water, may negatively impact the functioning of the marine ecosystem still remains,” said Esau.

Blankets for vulnerable children in Karibib and Otjimbingwe Staff reporter

A total of 250 blankets were donated to Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC’s) from Ebenhaeser Primary School in Karibib and Otjimbingwe Primary School. The generous gesture was made by the Epango Group, together with the Erongo Governor, Mr Cleophas Mutjavikua, Areva Namibia and First National Bank. The children were also very fortunate to receive cans of fish, donated by Namsov and Etosha Fishing. Epango Group Namibia is a non-profit/ charity organisation from Swakopmund consisting of a group of ladies who are passionate about helping the most needy and vulnerable in our communities. For the past six years, Epango Group

has been involved in various activities for children in the DRC settlement, including soup kitchens, and during 2015 they launched a “hugs-in-a-blanket” project for the OVC’s. To date, Epango Group managed to donate 586 blankets to the OVC’s and will continue with this drive for the next years to come. The Governor of the Erongo Region has been a mainstay in assisting from the governments’ side. Staff reporter Due to difficulties which arose whilst installing deep piled foundations that support the new quay wall, there will be a delay on the overall project completion date of the new Namport container terminal, which is currently about 56% completed. In a statement released by Namport, it pointed out that these pile installation difficulties required remedial work and changes to standard installation methods and, as a result of these difficulties, the project has seen certain delays, although CHEC and Namport are working to minimise the effect of the delay on the overall project completion date. As is the case with all large projects, this development is not without risks or challenges. Before the construction commenced, Namport had already identified several risks to the project which required careful mitigation measures. One of the biggest risks identified early on was the unique geotechnical conditions below the seabed at the project site and how these conditions might affect the long term settlements on the pavement as well as its effect on the deep foundations. Whilst the project site was specifically chosen for its relatively good geotechnical conditions, compared to other areas in the bay, the prevailing geotechnical conditions at the site still required careful risk mitigation. These difficult geotechnical conditions

arise primarily due to a 25m thick diatomaceous silt layer that starts at approximately 20m below the seabed. This diatomaceous silt layer is a layer of dead organic matter and its behaviour is generally not well understood. The type of diatomaceous silt found in Walvis Bay is particularly uncommon worldwide, and research into the engineering properties of these type of silts are limited. As a result, CHEC spent nearly six months doing additional geotechnical investigations and research on this diatomaceous silt layer. Namport had planned to commission the new container terminal in the first half of 2018, but it now appears likely that commissioning will only be in the second half of 2018. Again, Namport and CHEC are working to minimise, as much as possible, the schedule impact of these delays and remain confident that the project will be completed successfully within 2018. As reported in the past, the new container terminal project consists of several contracts of which the biggest contract (EPC) is being undertaken by China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC). The CHEC contract includes 90% of all the works required for the project. It is valued at about N$ 3.44 billion and the overall project is valued at about N$ 4 billion. CHEC has furthermore progressed quite well with the local content requirements of the contract.

erongotruckwash@gmail.com Mike McCusker and Holly Rye Maria Davel-Wallis The Namibian National and Local Governments have extended a warm welcome to more than a thousand members of the world’s JSKA Shotokan Karateka from 13 countries and Namibia, who are part of the 8th JSKA Shotokan Karate World Championships, held in the Dome in Swakopmund this week. On Tuesday evening excitement was running very high, as the last meetings were held before the first events on Wednesday morning would commence. Namib Independent was invited to attend the welcoming function, sponsored by Government and Local Government, in the person of the Erongo Regional Councillor for the Swakopmund constituency, Juuso Kambueshe. Kambueshe told Namib Independent that it was indeed a proud moment for the country, and the region, and it was history in the making. He welcomed the world and asked the region’s people to attend and support the Dome and JSKA Karate’s hosting of the World Championships, and to make the most of it. The teams of fourteen participating countries started arriving last week,

and over the weekend, the South African and Scottish teams were two of the represented countries that the newspaper had the pleasure to meet. The South African group consists of more than 300 people – and more than 80 contenders, including one world champion, Sensei Abé Grundligh, the ruling Shokotan karate Komitei world champion in the class 40 to 50 years. In an interview with him and the leader of the South African delegation, Sensei Soon Pretorius, they had expressed their pride and excitement to be part of the event, after “very hard work and commitment from the qualifying team members.” On Sunday evening we had the pleasure to meet team members of the Scottish JSKA Shotokan Karate team – and the message from them was: It is not only about winning – it is more about not losing – the words of the charming Sensei Mike McCusker, trainer and one of the official referees at the World Championships. He said that they would be looking for “clean technique”. He said, “After 41 years of training, my philosophy is that it is basically about control – and before you can control your opponent, you

must first learn to control yourself, and that is the difficult part. Not losing is simply not losing control of your emotions and not allowing your opponent to overwhelm you – if you can achieve that, you’ve won.” There were two world champions in the Scottish team, both women, and we had the pleasure of meeting one of them: Holly Rye – the delightful Katha world champion in the senior women’s category, age group 22 to 35 years. She said had been practising for 22 years, and said she was excited to be in Namibia, and ready and focused to defend her world title. The Dome was ready for the event, and invited Namibians to support JSKA Shotokan Karate Namibia’s hosting of the World Championships. Willem Burger, the leader of JSKA Shotokan Karate Namibia, says it is indeed a proud moment for Namibia and for karateka in the country. The NCCI Swakopmund has endorsed the event. The chairman of the NCCI Swakopmund, Paul T Ndjambula, said it is a great opportunity for Namibia and more specific Swakopmund, to display all the positives of the town, region and country, to the world.

Welcome to the World of CrossFit Ever felt like ,despite the regular exercise that you do, you never quite seem to break through to the next level? Well now there is a solution because the exercise regime and discipline that is sweeping the world, CrossFit, is now in full swing right here in Walvis Bay, with an evergrowing membership consisting of all ages and fitness levels.

So, just what is CrossFit? CrossFit is advertised, in four words, as “the sport of fitness.” CrossFit is comprised of constantly varied, high-intensity functional movements. It is a training philosophy that coaches people of all shapes and sizes to improve their physical wellbeing and cardiovascular fitness in an effective yet still encouraging, environment. CrossFit is a training program that builds strength and conditioning through extremely varied and challenging workouts. Each day the workout will test a different part of your functional strength or conditioning, not specialising in one particular area, but rather with the goal of building a body that’s capable of, and prepared for, practically anything and everything. CrossFit is the opposite of a gym. It does not make use of elliptical trainers, treadmills, weight machines, etc. When people ask us where the machines are, we inform them that our bodies are the machines. So, who should consider CrossFit? The following is by no means a sales technique; this is the truth as is evident from years of success across the world – the matter of fact is that CrossFit is for everyone. According to the CrossFit site, this program “is

designed for universal scalability making it the perfect application for any committed individual regardless of experience. We’ve used our same routines for elderly individuals with heart disease and cage fighters one month out from televised bouts. We scale load and intensity; we don’t change programs.” So what does that mean in laymen's terms? The same workout is programmed for everyone that comes to the CrossFit session on the day. We do not write a different program for pensioners than for for serious athletes. Everybody does the same workout, but it gets scaled according to your skills and physical capabilities. For example, if the workout stipulates 5 squats with 45kg above your head, but you can only squat with 8kg above your head, then that is how you will do your workout. If you are injured and cannot lift the weight above your head, or do a squat, then a similar movement will be presented by your coach as a substitute to ensure that you gain the same benefit from the workout as everybody else. As you get stronger and more experienced you’ll work your way towards eventually doing the workouts as prescribed.

What is a CrossFit class like? Say you are interested in CrossFit but first want to know what you are getting yourself into, this information is for you. Introduction class: At Skeleton Coast CrossFit we allow one free class for people who have never tried CrossFit before, so you can first see what it is about. You will join a normal class where we will start with a warm-up, then move over to our skill session, after which we then take on the workout of the day, lastly

finishing off with a cool down. All of this is performed in a 1-hour session. This is why CrossFit is perfect for people with busy schedules, as you gain the maximum benefit from our programs in a short period of time. On Ramp (Introduction Course): If you’re interested in joining the normal CrossFit classes, it is mandatory that you participate in our 3-hour introduction course, which is hosted on the last Saturday of each month. The purpose of this course is to teach you the nine foundational movements of CrossFit and the proper form of each of these movements. No matter how experienced you are, this is a valuable session and worth the time and money. Even if you think you have perfect form on your squats, dead lifts and/or overhead presses, it’s amazing what can be fixed when you have a trained set of eyes watching you do them. The next On Ramp session will be hosted on Saturday, 30 July from 09h00 – 12h00. To book your spot you can contact Gwen at skeletoncoastcf@gmail.com Normal classes: This is what you’re probably used to seeing or hearing about. A regular CrossFit class takes anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. Everybody starts at the same time, there are instructors walking around helping out and keeping track, and everybody is supporting and encouraging each other. At Skeleton Coast CrossFit we only allow for 6 members per class, in order to ensure that the coach can give his/her undivided attention to each member, thereby guaranteeing that you will receive a quality service during each session you attend. We also make use of an online application which you can download onto your smart phone to book your classes, see the workout of the day, see how many people are booked for the session you are attending, and even record and track your progress. The normal class is divided into 4 sections namely the warm-up, skill, workout & cool down. Frequently asked questions: Why is CrossFit more expensive than a normal gym? CrossFit is made up of group classes – example, think of yoga classes. It’s not like a normal gym where there are hundreds of members who come in, use the treadmill for 20 minutes and go home

– there is a qualified coach teaching the class, and monitoring your performance. Will CrossFit make me lose weight? If you push yourself and change your diet. As with all weight loss programs, diet will be 80% of your success or failure. But if you combine a healthy diet with CrossFit you will start to look better, get stronger, and

feel healthier within 30 days. Why do some of the workouts have girls’ names? Why do CrossFit people say things like “We’re doing Elizabeth at CrossFit today!” CrossFit has what are called “benchmark workouts” which are named after women. Coach Greg Glassman’s reasoning is this: “… anything that leaves you flat on your back and incapacitated only to

lure you back for more at a later date certainly deserves naming.” (CF Journal – Issue 13, September 2003).

Non-athletic people like it because it makes them feel athletic. People who have never had good social group experiences like it because CrossFit communities are always positive and supportive. CrossFit brings people together and makes them compete every day in a society that shies away from competition. The challenge creates a heightened sense of selfworth that develops into becoming a fitness elitist. So contact us today and join this fun, functional way of training to finally become the best version of yourself. For more information, visit the Skeleton Coast CrossFit website at www.skeletoncoastcrossfit.com

Conclusion: CrossFit is a fun way of getting fit, especially if you’re a person who hasn’t done anything physically challenging since school, or ever in your life. We have members who started with us who have not done a single form of exercise in 15 years. With CrossFit they start to enjoy the active lifestyle and even start participating in cycling challenges, running competitions, etc. Fit athletes also enjoy CrossFit because it provides those challenges that they seek from their training.
