The Namibians left for Atlanta on 14 June, with their parents, Philip Müller and Anita de Klerk, and joined the rest of the Southern African team and

members of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International’s team in South Africa, from where they left for Atlanta. It was an elated Anita de Klerk who updated Namib Independent over the weekend, to let us know that the three brothers each won gold in one of their categories. The team event on the Friday night, in which Julian participated as part of the Southern African team, had been won by the USA team. Following the gruesome murder of family man and well loved member of the Walvis Bay community, 50-year-old Hans Jörg Möller, and the brutal attack on his wife Carol-Ann (48) by six suspects, of which three have already appeared in court on murder charges - the family have set about changing the laws in Namibia forever. Over the last few days the

family have established a Facebook page called “no bail for murderers in Namibia which, during the first day or so online, has gathered well over 4000 members from all over Namibia. The site is dedicated to Hans, and is an official movement aimed at lobbying change in the Namibian law with respect to awarding bail to criminals. over 3 000 signatures to prosecutor Hafeni before court proceedings started. The popular pleasure boat skipper and tour guide of Sun Sail Catamaran services passed away in Swakopmund MediClinic on Saturday afternoon, after he had been gunned down in his home by six armed men during the night. The thugs also viciously attacked and tied up his wife Carol-Ann before robbing them blind. The men broke down the security gate at their residence’s front door to gain entry to their home. Meanwhile the Erongo Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa told the Namib Independent this week, that she is very proud of the swift work of the police, who pulled together across all regions to apprehend these men in record time. "The first day we already had one of our men and by the following day the other two," she said. "Now we are still establishing how many men are at large because some say five were present, others say six, but you can rest assured that the police are going flat out to bring these men to justice. "This is a very high profile case because of the brutal manner in which it was committed, and because they targeted an innocent family inside their home, leaving two children without their father, and the wife without her husband," she continued. "I must say that this murder was a huge shock to the Walvis Bay community and the country in general, and a lot of compassion has been shown towards the bereaved family. "I want us to all stand together as 'one Namibia - one Nation', and to all look out for each other in the fight against crime in our town." Kashupuulwa said that Nampol are busy implementing tighter gun control laws in the country."

Absalom Shigwedha A large crowd gathered outside the courthouse on Tuesday, as two of the five men, accused of the tragic death of the Walvis Bay resident, Hans-Jörg Möller (50), were brought to the Walvis Bay Magistrate Court for their first appearance. They are David Shekudja and David Tashiya, who were escorted into the courtroom under heavy police security. The State Prosecutor, Tresia Hafeni read the charges in court before Magistrate John Sindano and the men were charged with murder, housebreaking with the intent to rob and armed robbery and attempted murder. Tashiya indicated that he will conduct his own defense in the matter, while Shekundja indicated that he will apply

for a legal aid lawyer. They were informed that they can lodge a formal bail application to the State and should say why they should be granted bail. Tashiya and Shekundja were arrested in Windhoek over the weekend after a relentless search by the Namibian Police nationwide to apprehend these men who were said to be armed and dangerous. Gotlieb Panduleni appeared in the Walvis Bay Magistrate Court on Monday and was arrested on his way to Oshakati. During Panduleni’s appearance on Monday, it came to light that he is out on bail on three other cases of murder, one of attempted murder, as well as the illegal possession of a fire arm. Panduleni, Shekudja and Tashiya were denied bail and their case was postponed to the 2nd August 2016. Police have not disclosed where they are being detained in custody. Before the two men arrived at the court, escorted by the Police, a group of about 40 people waved placards demanding no bail be granted. As the Police took the two to custody in quantum kombi, the wife of the late Möller, Carol-Ann Sowden Möller (48), was clearly distressed and openly wept before she was driven away in a white Mercedes Benz.

Champions Continued from Page 1 Julian returned home with 3 medals, 1 Gold (Crazy Fitness Challenge) and 2 Silver (Mixed Martial Arts and Main Event of the Evening), Lesley also got 1 Gold (MMA) and 2 Silver (Crazy Fitness Challenge and Main Event of the Evening), while Delano got 1 Gold (MMA) and 2 Bronze medals (Crazy Fitness Challenge and Main Event of the Evening). Julian and Lesley contended in categories according to their weight (classification for 18+), while Delano participated in categories according to his age (classification for contenders under 18). In an interview with Julian Müller, after the Battle of Atlanta, he expressed his joy and pride, and gratitude towards the World president of Ring Contact Fighting Arts International (RCFAI), Master Joe Viljoen, for the support and opportunities the organisation had given them and other young kickboxers from Southern Africa and Africa. He said the Namibians had excelled, and that it had been an awesome event and a wonderful experience. Julian is busy with his preparatory studies in Germany, for a degree in mechanical engineering, and will return to Germany soon. Lesley is an in instructor at the Namibian MMA & Kickboxing Academy in Walvis Bay. Dad, Philip Müller, in an earlier interview with Namib Independent, had expressed the hope that the achievement of his three sons would be an inspiration to other young Namibians. He said he hoped that it would prove to them that hard work and dedication could take them places, and that the world could become their oyster, too.

Absalom Shigwedha THE Mayor of Walvis Bay, Alderman Wilfried, said the political leadership of the town will study the petition handed to them last week by the Namibia Public Workers Union (NAPWU), in which the union has made a number allegation against the town's council. About three hundred workers at the Walvis Bay Municipality, who are Napwu members, staged a peaceful demonstration and handed their petition to Wilfried. Their first demonstration was held on 16 June, but they were disappointed as there was not a single council member present to hand over the petition. However, on Thursday, Alderman came out to receive it and promised that council will study grievances raised, and will come back to Napwu within 14 working days. Alderman refuted allegations by Napwu that council members refused to receive the petition on the 13 July, saying on that day all councilors were in Windhoek for

business. During the first demonstration, Napwu accused councilors of the Walvis Bay Municipality that they are corruptly favouring their families when it comes to the allocation of land at the town. “There is corruption going on here. Councilors are giving land to their families,” said the chairperson of the Napwu Walvis Bay Branch, Raphael Liswaniso. Waving placards, on some of which were written 'we want to buy houses where we come from’, 'tired of renting, we need fair treatment’, ‘down with corruption, down, down’, ‘self-enrichment, down’, the workers also sang liberation struggle songs and shouted 'Viva, Harambee.' Napwu is a sole bargaining union for its members at the Walvis Bay Municipality In the petition, the workers want the Walvis Bay to pay them their back pay. The petition also alleges unfair labour practices, delaying of salary negotiations, poor employee-employer relations, misuse of public funds and lack of financial prudence.

Spinners reach out with soup kitchen for hungry DRC kids

(Photos Contributed) and bread Donna Collins About 800 malnourished children, dressed in rags, turned up in their droves for a cup of hot soup and bread at a charity soup kitchen set up in the DRC by the Coastal Spinning & Drifting/DSD fraternity on Saturday. Many huge pots of vegetable and meat broth were cooked in bulk by the Spinners’ family members and transported to site in the morning. A total of 50 loaves of bread, as well as dozens of bags of brötchens and lots of cakes were sponsored by Food Lovers Market, were handed out to the little ones to fill their tummies on a freezing cold day. It was all hands on deck dishing out the delicious soup mix from the back of bakkies to the queues of hungry kids. And since it was a Spinning and Drifting initiative, the guys parked their cars on display for the community to see, as well as to form an enclosed area for the feeding activity. According to Chris Van Rooyen (Chairperson DSD Coastal Spinning Club), this soup kitchen is the start of the huge charity drive supported by the Spinning members in Swakopmund who, through their compassion for underprivileged communities, want to reach out and help where they can. The soup kitchen was funded by these individuals and was assisted by some of the DRC ladies who helped dish out the soup to the non-stop stream of hungry faces, so this was a huge endeavour to feed these needy children. "The turnout was overwhelming

and at one point it was total chaos with hundreds of children squabbling to get in line for something to eat, but we got it under control,” said Van Rooyen, who mentioned that the scene he witnessed brought him to tears. "I can't believe the poverty and suffering that is in our society, which is why our club has decided to help the most vulnerable," he added. "We are busy with our next drive to distribute blankets and second hand clothing for these kids, and in August we want to organise a Spinning event to raise funds for the Cancer Association." He made mention to the fact that the Spinning community are caring and giving people, who across the country are doing something to help those in need, such as a fundraiser being launched in Rehoboth by the Spinning members to raise money to buy school shoes for children who otherwise have to walk to school with bare feet. "If everyone in society did something at some point to help the suffering of the underprivileged communities around them, I am sure we would be able to make a difference," added Van Rooyen. "Because while we sleeping in warm beds, wearing fine clothes and eating well, there are children on the other side of town who sometimes don't eat in days," he concluded, stressing that our political leaders need to spend less on their own material life styles, and start doing something to alleviate this poverty and suffering of their people that is growing out of control.

Not even the cold weather could keep dozens of pet owners from entering their pooches into the first lively SPCA Fun Day dog show, held at the General Club on Saturday and organised by Linda Van Zyl, local Swakopmund animal supporter. They came out in all shapes and sizes, breeds and cross breeds to show themselves off as part of a huge fund raiser activity, with raffles, dog shows and canine networking with proud owners on leashes. In addition many stalls were set up with a variety of products on display, including a new range of T-Shirts that have been printed and are available to purchase through the SPCA. The highlight of the day was the

Absalom Shigwedha In an official christening ceremony, the Tunacor Group introduced its latest addition to its fleet - a new fishing vessel named MFV 'Omake' - at a cost of N$70 million. The multi-purpose vessel was welcomed by Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhard Esau, at a function held last week bringing

the fleet to a total of ten to the Tunacor Group. This fishing vessel can catch hake, monk and horse mackerel, says Tunacor Group General Manager, Peya Hitula. Esau said the move by Tunacor Group to invest this particular fishing vessel carries many meanings to many people, but most importantly it is a testimony to the dedication of Tunacor Group and its business associates.

"I use my voice to make a difference" - Chaka Chaka

These are the words of the great South African songstress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Yvonne Chaka Chaka, who jetted into Walvis Bay last week to be one of the guest speakers at the Day of the African Child under the theme, "Conflict and Crisis in Africa: Protecting all children's rights." Chaka Chaka, who is recording her 23rd album this year, says she wants to come back to Namibia and put down a track with a group of young people from Sunshine Children's day care centre in Walvis Bay, who blew her away with their performance at the Day of the African Child. The National commemoration of the Day of the African Child, held in the Erongo Region, was also to pave the way for the private sector to join hands with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare. In this regard, UNICEF used this opportunity to invite Chaka Chaka to participate at strategic events to mobilise awareness, alliances and partnerships for childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights as part of Day of the African Child commemorations. She arrived on the 14th and spent four fruitful days with a delegation touching base

with the Walvis Bay and Swakopmund's business sector, plus visited two children's centres in the harbour town, delivered motivational speeches, met the regional Governor, the Mayor, and walked around the DRC informal area to mention some. During a media briefing on her last day to highlight some of her memorable moments spent during her visit, she said this had been the "greatest trip", whilst speaking passionately about children's rights and how we still have such a long way to go. "Our children are our future and we must do right for them," she stressed. "We plant the seeds for our children to grow up in by producing a stable environment, without abuse and neglect, as well as protecting and nurturing them - because sadly the plight of mistreated children is truly challenging.â&#x20AC;? The Deputy Minister Lucia Witbooi and Unicef Country Representitive Micaela Marques de Sousa were also present to spell out the concerns there are in Namibia regarding the growing problem of gender based violence facing women and children. The Day of the African Child was be celebrated at a time when Namibia is striving to reinforce actions and persuade political commitment to accelerate the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, the UN Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, the National Agenda for Children including the recent Harambee Prosperity Plan and the Sustainable Development Goals focusing on children.

“A Lion King has Vanished” (Photo: Desert Lion Conservation Foundation) Reporter for the environment The Desert Lion Conservation Foundation has made an urgent call for help to preserve the lives of a handful of desert lions after the death of one of the so-called Five Musketeers, five young lion brothers of the Hoanib Valley. The Foundation shared the following message on social media last week: “It is with great sadness to share the news that we have lost one of the Five Musketeers. Xpl-89, also known as “Harry”, was part of a unique coalition of five desertadapted male lions in the Namib. Together they grew up in the safety of the Hoanib Valley, but since they joined a pride of lionesses earlier this year they’ve been brought into regular contact with some rural settlements in the desert. Tragically, due to an incident with human-lion conflict several days ago, Xpl-89 died of a bullet wound. His loss is a tragedy and the harsh reality of lions and people living side by side.” It was on 12 June that Harry lost his life. He, together with his brothers, became world famous since the launch of the film/video, The Vanishing Kings – a documentary by Will and Liane Steenkamp, about the Namibia Desert Lion Conservation Project, initiated by Dr Flip Stander in 1998. A diary inscription on the website of the Desert Lion Conservation Foundation sketches the incident that

“proved fatal for Harry”: “On the night of 10/11 Jun 2016 the “Five Musketeers” returned to the Gomatum River where they killed a giraffe the previous day and walked past the Omiriu cattle outpost. The lions approached the settlement with large numbers of livestock. One of the lions (presumably Xpl-92 “Adolf”) broke into a corral. Fortunately, due to the disturbance caused by the villagers and their dogs, the lions moved away without killing any livestock. The Ministry of Environment & Tourism are still busy with their investigation, but at some point between Omiriu and Otjizeka spring the villagers exercised their legal right to protect their livelihood by shooting at the lions. This regular contact with people proved fatal for Harry, who died of a bullet wound to the chest on June 12.” According to DLCF, two of the other lions in the group observed at sunset that same day, also showed signs of injuries. Adolf had a wound on his cheek and Ben appeared to have been shot in the lower stomach. And then, the inscription of 14 and 15 June, sharing more detail. “14 Jun 2016 Xpl-89 ‘Harry’. Finding the carcass of Xpl-89 inside the Salvadora thickets was challenging and required crawling for approximately 30 metres through the thick undergrowth. An autopsy was performed on the carcass and biological samples were collected. The lion died quickly from

a single gunshot to the chest. The bullet passed through the heart and lungs. 15 Jun 2016. Omiriu Cattle Post. During the night the remaining four male lions (the “Musketeers”) continued moving towards Okongwe and they were south of the waterhole this morning. The Desert Lion Project assisted the Ministry of Environment & Tourism with their management and investigation of the incident. After all the biological data and other information were collected the carcass of Xpl-89 was burnt as a safeguard against the growing illegal trade in lion bones.” But the human-lion conflict continues. On 18 Jun 2016 DLCF reported: “Setback. At 01:00 the four male lions (the “Musketeers”) moved out of the Okongwe Mountains towards Tomakas, but they did not approach the village. Instead, the lions remained close to the edge of the mountains and headed in a westerly direction where several giraffes were browsing along the Gomatum valley. Unfortunately, the lions encountered a small group of cattle calves that did not return to the safety of the corrals at Tomakas. The lions killed two calves 2.5 km west of Tomakas. Bright lights and fireworks were used to prevent the lions from approaching Tomakas. The wounded lion,

Xpl-91, “Ben”, is making a remarkable recovery from the bullet wound to his lower abdomen.” The Desert Lion Conservation Foundation says “the four remaining Musketeers deserve another chance and along with the other desert lions they need our help.” It has made an urgent call for assistance “in preventing further conflict so we can protect both the people and the lions, by funding lion guardians and kraals to avoid these tragic events.” Fewer than a 100 desert lions remain.
