Walvis Bay first town to dialogue on Mass Land Action.
Walvis Bay residents became the nation’s first town to formally hold a public meeting, specifically to address the real likelihood that should the Affirmative Repositioning (AR) deadline not be met by the local council by the 31st July, neighbourhoods across the nation shall find themselves faced with disharmony as open plots in towns and cities are occupied by homeless AR members who have applied for land. The meeting was initiated by local resident and humanist Gareth Amos and
was open to all members of the community. According to Amos, the stimulus to take action was borne from the realisation that most members of the community are ill informed about the possible upcoming mass action that has the potential to wreak havoc and discord within our communities. “A week or so ago I realised that the deadline set by the AR for municipalities nationwide to process their 50 000 applications for affordable land was just around the corner. As the editor of a newspaper, I find myself in the fortunate
position to be privy to information on such issues, and I forget that not everyone access to the same information. I started to write a story on the deadline and after a few phone calls, I realised that very few people in the community were aware of the AR movement let alone the deadlines” said Amos. A press notice advertising the event set the tone for the meeting as Continued on Page 3

Mayor of Walvis Bay, told community members at Narraville Primary School on Tuesday. “Our fiscal year starts and ends in the June/July period and budget allocation from a previous year can roll over into the next financial year.” The Mayor has requested that community members meet and identify the most necessary Continued on Page 3

There will be peace Walvis Bay Municipality Walvis Bay first town to dialogue on Mass Land Action. Continued from Page 1 it clearly outlined that no political dialogue or platform would be made available to the attendees and highlighted that anyone who did attempt to promote a cause would be asked to leave. The purpose of the meeting was simply to begin to develop ways in which to minimise any potential volatility that may arise between residents and protestors come July 31st. Concerned residents of Walvis Bay subsequently gathered at the Yacht Club on Wednesday morning. In his opening remarks Amos highlighted that the purpose of the meeting was to create an atmosphere amongst our people of understanding, compassion and kindness in the face of adversity that all people in our town may find themselves in after the 31st July deadline. He also informed the attendees that he had been in positive and constructive meetings with Job Amupanda and the AR leadership, NAMPOL and the Walvis Bay Municipality. “We are here today to discuss the practicalities of an event that our people and community shall be faced with if the AR’s promise to unleash its 9500 strong army of the poor to occupy open plots across our town is fulfilled. We are not here to discuss the politics or the reasons why our nation finds itself in this position. “ “Today, we seek only to understand the plight of all parties that will be affected: the desperate, poor and homeless on the one hand and those that shall be directly affected by any mass occupation on the other. If we do not seek to understand and empathise with each other we will not be able to conduct ourselves civilly or indeed in a Christian manner which is the religion that guides almost every citizen in our town,” added Amos. Attendees were remarkably calm and thoughtful as they received and discussed information relating to the AR Movement, its charismatic leader Job Amupanda, the proposed land mass action, the legal issues surrounding the action and the role of NAMPOL, the Municipality and government. Emphasis was at all times focused on not judging or blaming the AR movement itself or indeed any government organisation, but on focusing on the practicalities of the proposed mass action only.
Amos continued, “Ours is not to lay blame at anybody’s door. We live in a nation where the majority of our people sleep on sand with only thin cardboard to protect themselves from the elements. I ask that as we discuss the issues today, that you keep this in mind at all times. Namibia is not alone, the gap between the rich and poor in the West is increasing daily. There are millions of Americans living below the poverty line. If those same people instigated an action such as that being proposed by the AR, the only difference would be that poor, dirty white folk would be moving into the neighbourhoods of rich white folk. If the poor who are seeking to demonstrate by moving into the plots in your neighbourhoods were white, would you attack them or feed them? “Our country has long suffered on account of our diverse ethnicity and we can easily once again become slaves to this outdated ill if we do not frame this issue as it really is,” Amos emphasised. “This is about poverty and not race and if we cannot frame our conversation in this manner we have little hope of reaching an understanding and, through our own humanity, extinguishing the fire that shall envelope our community.” On the discussions held between Amos and the AR leadership, Amos indicated that he found Amupanda to be a very intelligent, empathic and charismatic young mind who, despite being ostracised by the many, has accepted to carry upon his shoulders the burden faced by the Namibian poor and homeless. “After an almost 3 hour meeting with Amupanda and the AR top leadership to share ideas and to help one another understand the broader issues, Amupanda has agreed to meet with members from the community who attended the meeting on Wednesday in an effort to opening meaningful dialogue, sharing ideas and primarily to reach a point of mutual understanding of the real fears and potential volatility that may arise, with a singular aim of minimising any violence,” said Amos.
According to Amos, organising the meeting and getting buy-in and support from the community has been a daunting process. “I have received many threats and have been summarily dismissed from offices, in one instance I had my citizenship threatened. However almost every such instance took simply when I mentioned AR but before I could fully explain my intentions - this only serves to illustrate the volatility of the situation” said Amos. Blatant and not so subtle threats were not the only obstacles that needed to be overcome in order to hold the meeting. On two occasions, including the day prior to the meeting, Amos was informed that the hosts of the event had taken a decision to cancel the meeting. According to numerous sources, both from the Yacht Club and from Church leaders, a member of the public had informed them that despite the insistence from the organisers that the meeting was apolitical, Amos had misled them and that it was in fact an AR political meeting which would see hundreds of AR members descending upon the venue. “It is hard enough to win the confidence of both parties on opposite sides of conflict without such malicious intent to spread fear and suspicion,” stated Amos. The meeting lasted for almost two hours and was concluded upon an extremely positive outcome being reached upon its conclusion. Roughly thirty attendees have agreed to join Amos in an effort to educate the community and to act as peace brokers between all parties, and to work towards practical and peaceful solutions to the issues which may arise come the end of the month. Any member of the public who would like to get involved is welcome to contact Gareth Amos on gareth@namibindependent. com.na to be kept informed about future meetings and further developments. The public is encouraged to keep an eye on the media for notices of upcoming meetings and to stay informed about the AR movement.

improvements needed in the community for the next fiscal year and bring these suggestions forward to the municipality by Friday 19 June. Part of the presentation involved a report back on the municipality’s land development plan. “No other town could provide the amount of erven that Walvis Bay has,” the Mayor told community members in Narraville. Land development For the 2014/2015 period the municipality reported 749 erven plots developed in the Ext 5, 6 and 7 areas in Kuisebmond. The municipality allocated N$ 77 799 618 for this development of which N$ 43 069 642 has been spent. 355 erven were reportedly developed in the Walvis Bay town/residential area, allocating N$ 110 339 960 with N$ 91 127 673 spent. A further 246 erven were developed in Narraville with N$ 23 821 482 spent from the N$ 31 595 133 budget allocation. Because of the new port development, industrial areas in Kuisebmond are being developed. However, the extension of more erven towards Langstrand from Kuisebmond will be cut off by the new port. Therefore the municipality is focusing on land development from Narraville through to the dune area towards Langstrand. Water distribution The municipality has appointed consultants for a new water reservoir at Mile 7, with a budget allocation of N$ 14 050 000. The project is in the process of obtaining a clearance certificate (ECC) and the construction tender will be advertised in June 2015. A new module LB reservoir is also being finalized with the tender expected to be advertised in June 2015. Phase 1 of the Kuisebmond bulk water supply line, including the construction of a bulk water supply line from the Narraville Bridge to Ext. 5 & 6 has reportedly been completed. The project will continue in the 2015/2016 financial year and will supply water to the newly developed extensions. “Much of the town developments are to facilitate the new port of Walvis Bay which is being built this year,” the councillors explained. Furthermore the municipality reported on the development of industrial stalls in Kuisebmond, the renovation of the Kuisebmond stadium, the Narraville community hall, upgrading of sport facilities, single quarters upgrade of the Otto Gawanab Flats (OGF), resealing of sidewalks, rebuilding of gravel roads and intersections, the town’s master sewer plan and pump

Thereafter the municipality will look into developing conference facilities at the Dolphin Park. Housing and roads The mass housing report looks as follows: Kuisebmond has a total of 209 houses completed with 89 houses handed over and no houses under construction. Narraville has 61 houses allocated with 61 houses still under construction and no houses completed or handed over. The Build Together programme is expected to be completed by June/July 2015 with 40 houses identified for Kuisebmond and 31 houses for Narraville with an estimated total cost of N$ 5 680 000. The municipality has reportedly spent N$ 55 497 440 on the tarring of roads in the Kuisebmond Ext. 5 & 6, Narraville Ext. 7, Meersig Ext. 2 and Walvis Bay Ext. 14 areas in the current financial year. A number of roads/streets have been identified by the council to be put on the priority list for tarring in the new financial year. An amount of N$ 17,897,537 has been set aside for this purpose. Of this amount, expenditure amounting to N$ 633,921 was spent on paving Mandume Ndemufayo Street in Meersig. The remainder of the funds are earmarked for the tarring/ paving of ±15 km of streets and ±18 km of sidewalks. The report indicated that “During the current financial year, two attempts were made through a tendering process to implement this project. However, no competent entity could be sourced at both attempts.” “A tender is currently running on this project in a third attempt to find suitable contractors.”

Through the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the National Energy Fund Levy (NEF) is charged at a rate of 0.0108c/ kWh, the funds from this levy help fund electricity generation projects in the country. Swakopmund residents can expect an average increase of 7.3%, Henties Bay 5.7%, Arandis 6.5%, Usakos 8.3% Karibib 8.0% Omaruru 8.7% and Uis 9.0%. Increases are as a result of a lack of domestic generation capacity, high import electricity tariffs, to protect the economy against unnerved energy (load shedding) and to ensure that planned generation comes on board in time for a sustainable Electricity Supply Industry. It must be noted that Erongo Red is the only distributor that offer an in-feed tariff which allows users of solar power to sell their electricity back to Erongo Red. The distributor also introduced a toll free customer call centre (081 9600) for any complaints regarding electricity and Erongo Red.

We've Got Mail
Thursday, 11 June 2015
We've got
mail Good day Sir, We are troubled in this town with trucks that are travelling with exhaust brakes on, at any time in the night or day. During the day trucks that use exhaust brakes are so loud that you must wait until the driver stops using the exhaust brake before you go on talking to each other in the building. At night you fall out of the bed. 1. According to the Traffic Officer in charge there is no law forbidding the use of exhaust brakes in town, which is understandable. But then the truck must be fitted with a silencer as the manufacturer and the law describe. 2. There is a law that the trucks must have silencer on their exhaust system. Which those noisy trucks don’t have. They remove the silencer to get the loud noise. This brings me to the fact that the trucks are not roadworthy and their licenses must be revoked by the Traffic Department, as they do with the taxi operators. The big truck operators have their exhaust silencers on and when the drivers use the exhaust brake you nearly can’t hear them. 3. Then the second offense is that the decibel level is too high, it goes over the permissible decibel level that is allowed by law. This means again that these trucks are not Roadworthy. You see the driver of the Yellow / Orange Freightliner of Arangis Transport N 3183 WB is using his exhaust brake in town. When I asked him not to use his exhaust brake he said to me “who will stop me?” He is correct, but he does not have a Silencer fitted on his system, so I have the right to stop him from using the exhaust brake as the truck is not roadworthy. He does not use the exhaust brake when he is driving to his home, opposite the Head of Traffic. He told me “go to him, he is staying opposite me and report me”. That is how arrogant he is. If our Traffic department want to stop these trucks, they have the right to do it according to law. Why can we also not put on a Board that says it is forbidden to use exhaust brakes without silencers in town boundaries. They do it in Natal at Escom, if a driver uses his exhaust brake will be fined. I hope you can do article to stop using exhaust brakes without a silencer in town. Regards Manfred Scherer

Scientific facts must inform our decisions, says Esau clearances to proceed.
They are planning to mine on fish breeding grounds and this may affect the recovery of fish stocks. “Phosphate mining in the ocean has never been done anywhere in the
world. It's a greenfield project and we have no information on the subject … They are planning to mine on fish breeding grounds and this may affect the recovery of fish stocks.” In March this year, Esau confirmed to the press that the three-year moratorium remains in place: “Scope studies to determine the terms of reference on a comprehensive moratorium are still ongoing. This will reveal whether phosphate mining will have an impact on the environment and that is why all is on hold. The moratorium will still be in place until such time that we have agreed on the terms. It will be that long. It has been extended until such time that we
Graca D’Almeida reading a speech from Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Dr Bernard Esau Staff Reporter We owe it to ourselves and to future generations to protect our seas. History will judge us accordingly. This was the message from Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Dr. Bernard Esau in his opening address at the start of the annual marine science research meeting in Swakopmund this week. In a speech read on his behalf by acting executive director Graca D’Almeida, Esau said government’s policy must be driven by the sustainable long-term use of natural resources, emphasising the need to turn towards renewable resources. The three-day meeting at the Fisheries and Marine Institute which ended on Wednesday brought together more than 50 marine scientists to present the latest research findings and deliberate on the state of the oceans and fish stocks. The Minister also warned of potential conflict, no doubt with a view to the diverging interests of emerging mining companies and the established fisheries sector which employs more than 13,000 people, over the future exploration and protection of the seas. Though debate on the subject was somewhat muted, in the presentation of her research the eminent marine biologist, Dr. Brownwen Curry expressed an ongoing concern among scientists over the potential impact of
seabed phosphate mining on the health of marine life along the Namibian coastline. Scientists are concerned about the cumulative impact of dredging the seabed, which would release toxic gases into the water, combined with the potential release of radioactive waste products back into the sea from the associated land-based processing plants and factories, with potentially detrimental effects on fish stocks and the health of the sea. Dr. Curry said they are not yet sure of the likely consequences of such operations. Environmentalists have argued for a cautionary approach as Namibia would be the very first country to ever undertake such a mining project in a sensitive ecological area. The general consensus among scientists with specialist knowledge of the Benguela current is that they need more time to study the potential effects. Despite having previously made land available for phosphate processing onland at Luderitz, Cabinet, acting on the recommendation of the Fisheries Minister, imposed a three-year moratorium on phosphate mining on the seabed on 17 September 2013 to allow for the gathering of sufficient scientific data. At the time Esau said the phosphate companies were granted mining licences by the Ministry of Mines and Energy but did not have environmental

have peace of mind.” As he has done throughout, Esau insisted on the need for a vigorous decision-making process underpinned by solid scientific research. Our research needs to be to on par with international standards, he said. He called on marine scientists in Namibia to deliver high quality research that can inform evidence-based decision-making in government. There are still vast untapped resources within the coastal and marine environment: “The onus is on you, the scientists, to discover and bring to the fore the hidden treasures of the Benguela to build the Namibian economy.”

Excitement sparked over Prince Harry's arrival Donna Collins Excitement has sparked countrywide with the recent reports of Prince Harry making plans to fly to Namibia to spend threemonths working on antipoaching projects with endangered black rhino as well as teaming up with Save the Rhino Trust.

It is expected that the adventurous Prince and third-in-line to the British throne, will leave for Africa at the end of the month. The report also stated that the 30-year-old Prince will be hands on in the north-west Kunene region learning how to save rhino and desert elephants. He chose this area over hundreds of conservation projects after reading of work done by Nature Conservancy and Save the Rhino Trust. And whilst the announcement has not yet been confirmed, Simson Uri/Khob (CEO Save the Rhino Trust) who was visiting his head office in Swakopmund this week, said that he has heard the news. "Due to tight security measures surrounding his arrival, no plans have been made public," he said.

What he did say however, is that his visit would definitely heighten the plight of the Rhino to the outside world, and he believes that Prince Harry will be working in the field with the tracking scouts, to become fully involved in anti poaching operations in Namibia. "No itinerary has been released yet, but we believe that his trip has been organised privately through the royal house," he said. In fact a source close to the Prince said that he has chosen much of the itinerary himself. "But as soon as I have confirmed the exact date of arrival, the SRT will put all the arrangements into place, and it would be an honour for Save the Rhino Trust to work together with the Prince for the protection of Namibia's endangered Rhino. "I would like to introduce Prince Harry to the project region, the communities and visit the conservancies as well as go into the rural areas where the people are living amongst the wildlife," added Uri/Khob, saying that they would probably make use of lodges in the area or even camp in the field. He further mentioned that Prince Harry is the patron of one of the SRT's largest donors 'Tusk Trust UK', and that he even extended an invitation to Prince William when last he was in London attending a charity anniversary. "It will be our pleasure to introduce Prince Harry to the efforts SRT are making in protecting this endangered species, as well as well as showing him around our beautiful country," he added. Prince Harry is said to have revealed last month how much he is looking forward to the trip, and will be shadowing one of South Africa’s leading vets. Apparently he is also keen to learn more about the Himba tribe, and will making a trip into Kaokoland. The Prince is due to return to the UK in September.

The team will drive through Namibia and Botswana and will attempt to set a new solar only land speed record as part of their preparation for the upcoming South African Solar Challenge. The adventure, scheduled for the second half of June, will take the UJ Energy Movement to Windhoek and Gaborone on a 4.700 km trip in a solar powered vehicle specially designed and built by UJ students. They are expected to cross into Namibia on 18 June. “As far as we can tell, we will be the first solar powered electric vehicle to venture across the border into sub-Saharan Africa,” the team said on their webpage. “We will also be attempting the solar-only land speed record this year and data recorded during this trip will be
used to optimise the vehicles performance for this initiative, preparing us for the 2016 Sasol Solar challenge, a biennial event which aims to promote interest in renewable energy technologies.” The UJ Energy Movement is a programme that promotes research, education and industry participation on alternative energy issues at the University of Johannesburg. “Illanga was conceptualized in 2011 by a group of final year B.Eng students at UJ. Their passion and commitment to the project saw the dream become a reality. The project includes undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Engineering Science, Industrial Design, and Marketing Departments.” The Solar Car Project is used to promote the study of alternative energy, energy management and sustainable engineering design through the biyearly conceptualisation and construction of solar and alternative energy powered vehicles. So you've heard that Prince Harry is coming to help save the rhino in Namibia. Well, there are many unsung heroes in our own community that you should know about. Meet Ngaujake, one of the dedicated rhino trackers at Save the Rhino Trust Namibia. As part of the patrol teams, Nagaujake spends up to 21 days at a time in the desert, monitoring the rhinos and protecting them from poachers. The trackers face incredible dangers every day now that the poaching crisis has hit Namibia: "Before it was just about rhinos. But now we are looking for poachers. It is very dangerous because poachers are a person like you. They can also hide
somewhere, they can also shoot you" And the dangers are not limited to humans. "Sometimes when you sleep in the tent lions come around in the night, trying to open it." Ngaujake and all the other trackers at Save the Rhino Trust are true rhino heroes, putting their lives on the line every day to protect these unique creatures. He says the rhinos are "the Namibian diamond", and he is confident they can be saved. But not without the support of local communities and donors around the world. Please show your support and donate www.savetherhino.org/donate
Parvo Virus (katgriep) It is a a deadly virus that affects dogs, this virus does not come from cats but is transferred between dogs or through the environment. It is a VERY contagious Virus. It is a very stable virus, this means it can survive in the environment for months, as well as on objects like clothing, shoes, blankets and food bowls. It can live for years in your yard so it is important to have your new dog fully vaccinated before you take it home. Common symptoms: depression, lack of appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea (usually bloody). In rare cases this disease can also severely affect the heart. It can cause rapid death. The most common cause of death is severe dehydration, sepsis, electrolyte imbalances and endotoxic shock. The most IMPORTANT prevention is vaccination. All puppies need 3 vaccinations at intervals of 3-4weeks to be protected. They can still get infected in between vaccinations. As they are only protected 1 month after 3rd vaccination. Vaccination should be given correctly and at the correct time. It should only be given to a puppy that is completely healthy and the vaccine must be handled correctly.

Research summit strives for proper utilisation of marine resources Donna Collins
In the wake of the celebration of 'World Ocean Day' this week, was the three-day Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources (NMSF) annual research summit, which was officially opened Tuesday. A large contingent of professors, scientists, marine specialists, NACOMA representatives, Institutes, NFMR attendees, and International Universities to mention some, put their heads together towards the theme of the occasion, "sustainable utilization of Namibia's Marine resources." Speaking on behalf of the Minister Fisheries Bernhard Esau, PS Graca D'Almeida who delivered his address, claimed that the Annual Research Meeting is fast becoming one of the most significant events on the Ministry's calendar. "Our coastal and marine resources if used sustainable can lift many of our people from the shackles of unemployment and poverty, and it is common knowledge that our fisheries resources are one of the leading contributors to our economy. "It is estimated that the coastal and marine resources contribute approximately U$269 billion a year to the Benguela Large Marine Ecosystem." "The Ministry is also cognisant of the fact that our coastal and marine environment is not only consistent of fisheries resources, but also other resources and subsequent industries
that make a substantial contribution to our economy." It was further believed that there are still significant untapped resources, both renewable and non renewable within our coastal and marine environment, shifting the onus on the scientists to discover and bring to the fore hidden treasures of the Benguela to build the Namibian economy. "We want to create employment for our people and improve their living standards, yet we cannot afford to compromise the integrity and balance of our environment which needs to sustain us and our future generations to come. "Therefore a rigorous, dynamic and continuous process by which decisions are made, need to be underpinned by solid scientific research, and strengthened to be on par with international standards. "I am glad that our government recognizes the importance of Research, Science and Technology as an engine of economic growth and development, hence the importance and necessity for scientists to present and interrogate their research." Making mention to the theme which highlights sustainable utilization of Namibia's marine resources", the Minister implores all stakeholders operating within the coastal and marine environment to be cognisant of the inter-relationship amongst different industries and how these may affect each other in a positive or negative manner.

Sharon Brooks St Gabriel Community Ambulance service has offered to give police officers and neighbourhood watch members in Walvis Bay free first aid training in an effort to save even more lives in our harbour town. Gabriela Teleman, founder and managing director of St Gabriel ambulance service, says that the decision to train police officers and neighbourhood watch members stems from a need for first responders to be able to assess situations correctly and apply life-saving treatment as soon as possible. Not only will the training program eliminate a large number of false call outs, as participants will be taught how to assess a patient to ascertain whether medical intervention is required, but the course will provide valuable information on how to treat and handle a patient correctly in order to prevent further injury. There have been many cases in which first responders have moved patients after trauma in an attempt to help the victim, but in so doing, have unknowingly risked causing further harm. NAMPOL and neighbourhood watch programs have been requested to
organise themselves into groups, as the course can only be presented to 15 people at a time to ensure that all participants have the opportunity to practice their newly acquired skills under supervision of a trained instructor. St Gabriel will offer the first aid training completely free of charge as a community project, but have said that donations towards the printing costs of the study material would be welcome. As Gabriela says “if we can save just one life, it will pay for everything”. In addition, Gabriela would like to encourage the community to suggest ways to reduce the high number of accidents on Namibian roads, saying that St Gabriel will award a free first aid kit to the person that comes up with the best solution to the shocking road accident statistics. She added, “We must fight for our community, we need to take control of our lives”. She says that Namibians must follow the wise words of JFK, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country”. Face of Namibia continues to empower women
Hilly Shamulele, Mary Ankonga and Jacky Diergaardt at the Face of Namibia Gala dinner. Sharon Brooks Glitz and glamour were the order of the night last week Friday when Face of Namibia held a Gala dinner at Oceans Restaurant in Walvis Bay to raise funds for their upcoming campaign to empower the women of Namibia. Guests strutted their stuff down the red carpet to show their support for the organisation which strives to encourage women to take control of their lives and reach their full potential. Mary Ankonga, founder of Face of Namibia opened the event by announcing that the organisation will soon be launching a campaign which will seek to educate women on topics such as sexual health and gender based violence. Mary stated that the disturbing increase in passion killings and incidents of baby dumping in Namibia encouraged her to “raise awareness and put an end to the global scourge of gender based violence”. With the help of volunteers, Face of Namibia hopes to visit schools across the country to provide sex education to young Namibian women and to encourage the women of our country to become more independent and take control of their lives. Mary is a fantastic role model for women in Namibia, at just 36 years old, after starting out selling donuts, she owns
numerous businesses, is currently in her second year of a bachelor’s degree in Law and is the proud mother of five children. She encourages parents to communicate openly with their children and to build a relationship founded on trust. A young women should not be scared to tell her mother that she has become sexually active or has fallen pregnant, but should trust that her parents will support her and guide her to make positive life choices. Jacky Diergaardt, a beneficiary of Face of Namibia’s previous project that saw the organisation paint houses where orphaned vulnerable children live, spoke about her experiences with gender based violence and encouraged the community to join hands to stop this despicable practice, pointing out that men too can be victims of domestic abuse. Hilly Shamulele, a welder employed at EBH added her voice to the cause by saying that enough is enough and that business women need to mobilise and engage women in their communities to effect change. A number of businesses, including NBC, Rolls Royce, Southey and many more, have already pledged their support for Face of Namibia, which hopes to officially launch the campaign later this year. Mary expressed her gratitude toward the community for their support and vowed to continue to be involved in community upliftment. Through the campaign, she hopes to save 1000 babies and change the lives of as many Namibian women as possible through education.

G4S unites Walvis Bay
community through rugby Sharon Brooks Saturday saw nearly 500 children from eight schools in Walvis Bay gather at the Narraville Sports Ground to practice their newly acquired skills after a week of coaching by international rugby coaches. The tournament was organised by G4S in conjunction with London based charity Bhubesi Pride, which aims to make a sustainable difference in the lives of thousands of children across Africa through sport development. A team of eleven coaches from all around the world volunteered to carry out the coaching expeditions, supporting rugby and community development in schools and community centres in nine countries across east and southern Africa. Through this initiative, Bhubesi Pride hopes to unite, empower and inspire children to reach their full potential. The week-long project included leadership training for teachers and G4S employees as well as health and safety talks conducted at the various schools by G4S, who also donated recycle drums to all the schools. Following successful events in Rehoboth for the last two years, the project was hosted in Walvis Bay last week and will, most likely, be held in the coastal town again next year. Nearly 500 boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 participated in the coaching clinics and every participant received a medal after the tournament on Saturday. Herbert van Niekerk, Regional Manager of G4S Namibia, says that the support from the community
Nearly 500 boys and girls participated in the coaching clinics. has been amazing. Various business contributed to the event: Waltons donated stationery to each participant, Shoprite sponsored hot dogs for the tournament, Fruit and Veg and Herco provided refreshments during the coaching sessions and numerous other companies contributed to the great success of the tournament. The Kudu Rugby Club also got very involved in the project and came out on the day to show their support for the budding rugby stars before their triumphant victory later that day. 21 G4S employees and fifty teachers volunteered their time to ensure the tournament ran smoothly and the kids enjoyed themselves.
Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can. The matches were not scored, as the project is not about winners and losers, but rather focuses on Nelson Mandela’s wise words: “Sport has the power to change the world, the power to inspire, the power to unite people in a way that little else can.”

Fizzy drinks can be just as damaging as alcohol
Woman who claims she owns the sun sues eBay A woman who was banned from selling plots on the Sun on eBay has won the right to take the auction site to court. Maria Duran has been claiming ownership of part of the star since 2010 when she threatened to bill solar power users. The 54-year-old registered the star in her name at a notary office in Spain, before opening an eBay account selling squaremetre plots for one euro each. But two years later eBay pulled her listings, saying they
violated its intangible goods policy, and her account was blocked. She threatened to sue, and now one Spanish court has recognised her claim. A trial will take place next month, with Ms Duran demanding around £7,500 for payments she says she has not received. Ms Duran, from Vigo in the Spanish region of Galicia, has rejected an attempt by eBay to settle the case out of court. She continues to sell Sun
plots on her own website. She says while there is an international agreement which says no country can claim ownership of a planet or star, she is an individual and is not bound by the agreement. Source: www.news.sky.com/
How two people found love thanks to Mad Max
Stunt doubles fall for each other while filming Mad Max: Fury Road in the Namibian desert When South African Dane Grant showed up to work as Tom Hardy's temporary stunt double in Mad Max: Fury Road, he thought it would be just another shoot. But there in the Namibian desert between the trucks and the shiny chrome he would meet his future wife, Dayna, who was Charlize Theron's stunt double. "I remember that first day meeting her in the stunt rehearsal gym. She stood out for all the right reasons," said 37-year-old Dane. "Every time we get to work together is a blast, but none more so than the initial fight rehearsal," said Dane, "in the film it's the first
time Max meets Furiousa and they fight it out with a sequence that fight choreographer had us training nonstop for weeks." Hundreds of (choreographed) punches later, Dane and Dayna fell in love. Today the stunt doubles for Mad Max and Furiosa are married with a 14-month-old son. Initially scheduled to last a month, the Mad Max shoot started filming in May 2012 and would continue until December. Dayna, a 39-year-old native of New Zealand who has doubled for Lucy Lawless in Xena: Warrior Princess and Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman, was in the middle of a training camp in the desert when she met Dane, a South African called to work as Tom
Hardy's rehearsal double. Hardy's official double was later announced as New Zealander Jacob Tomuri, yet the relationship between Dayna and Dane, who would go on to play some white-faced "war boy" characters in the movie, continued to deepen. "Dayna and I had a lot in common with those two characters, meeting for the first time, learning to trust each other under stressful conditions," said Dane, "pretty much just get on with what you're supposed to while on a mission through the desert with a bunch of weirdly dressed post-apocalyptic characters everywhere you look." That can of cola might be an essential pick-me-up when you are at work, but it is actually as damaging to your liver as a heavy night on the sauce. That is according to a new study, which found that people who drink more than one fizzy sugarsweetened drink a day were more likely to develop non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than those who did not drink any pop. But while the saccharine sweet drinks have also been linked to diabetes and heart disease, their low-sugar equivalents do not seem to have the same effects. The findings were revealed after a team from Tufts University studied 2,364 middle aged men and women to find out how many sugary or caffeinated beverages they consumed on a daily basis. But after undergoing at CT scan to measure the amount of fat in the liver, it was discovered that some had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with the condition being more prevalent in people who said that they drunk
more than one sugar-sweetened beverage a day. And the link between the two conditions still existed after scientists accounted for sex, age, body mass index and dietary factors. Dr Jiantao Ma, who led the study, explained; "Our study adds to a growing body of research suggesting that sugar-sweetened beverages may be linked to NAFLD and other chronic diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. "Few observational studies, to date, have examined the relationship between sugarsweetened beverages and NAFLD." Dr Nicola McKeown, who co-authored the study, added: "Although there is much more research to be done, sugarsweetened beverages are a source of empty calories, and people need to be mindful of how much they are drinking, perhaps by reserving this habit for special occasions." Hyundai i20 2015 Julia Hango
Hyundai has traditionally been known for selling functional, reliable and budget-priced cars. But over the past few years it has progressively renewed its model range, adding design flair and notable sophistication. The Hyundai i20 is slightly bigger than rivals in its class, so it can seat 3 adults in comfort in the back seat. The major controls - steering, pedals and gear change - are accurate yet effortlessly light. The i20 has commendable NVH levels, which helps make it relaxing on a long drive, and its chassis handles road imperfections with aplomb whilst still providing adequate and secure handling characteristics and a pleasantly direct steering feel. The major controls steering, pedals and gear change are accurate yet effortlessly light.
The 1.2-litre Kappa engine incorporates Continuously Variable Valve Timing on both the intake and the exhaust ports to ensure maximum power and fuel efficiency and produces 61kW and 115Nm, while the 1.4-litre Gamma engine churns out 74kW and 133Nm. Boot space is generous at 294 litres, ahead of many other rivals. The boot is well-shaped and has a wide opening, but there is a fairly high load lip, which makes loading and unloading large and heavy items more difficult. The Hyundai i20 1.2 Motion will retails for N$189 000 and includes standard features such as a driver’s airbag, passenger airbag with disable function, ISOFIX child seat attachments, air conditioning, a Radio/CD/MP3 player with USB/Aux/iPhone connections and Bluetooth connectivity with controls integrated in the multi-function steering wheel, as well as electric front window operation. A standard 2 year/30 000km service plan is included. The i20 1.4 Fluid is the next model up and retails for N$ 214 000 for the manual. Over and above the Motion model, the Fluid adds rear parking sensors, Full Electric Window Operation, Climate control and 16 inch alloy wheels. The Hyundai i20 1.4 Fluid AT retails for N$224 000 at the top of the current range. On the Fluid models a service plan for 3 years/60 000km comes standard. As with all Hyundai products, a class leading 5 year /150 000km warranty offers great peace of mind.
