CHEC declares

war on HIV AIDS Niel Terblanche

With wildcat strikes seemingly happening all over the country, residents of Walvis Bay were not surprised to see yet another group of people walking in front of the harbour gate under colourful banners and under the guidance of traffic officials. As people gathered to see who were striking, a different message could be read on the banners carried by the large group of people dressed in bright working garments. The message read ‘Getting to Zero’ and declared war on the scourge that has been killing many people all over the world. “We want zero new HIV infections, zero deaths from AIDS related illnesses and zero discrimination against people living with the disease,” said Linda Garises from the Perfect Solutions Health and Safety Consulting institution (PSHSE), contracted to fight HIV/AIDS amongst the people working on the harbour. “That is why we were marching to focus the attention of the people going past us on the disease that is still killing our workers.” The Chief Executive Officer of the China Harbour and Engineering Company (CHEC), Feng Yuan Fei, said during the launch of the voluntary counselling and testing campaign that HIV/AIDS is a serious

health issue that needs to be handled all seriousness and precaution. “To ensure that all our workers enjoy a healthy life, the Workplace HIV AIDS Wellness project is not just a legal and moral obligation for CHEC as a company functioning in Namibia, but it also an honour for us to take part in the global battle against the disease. As a company we declare that CHEC will join hands with the Namibian national effort to stop HIV from spreading.” He said CHEC supports non-discriminatory employment policies and the company believes that employees with the HIV/AIDS infection are entitled to the same basic rights and opportunities as all employees, including confidentiality, respect and dignity of the individual. “CHEC procedures and policies will be applied equally to all employees irrespective of their HIV/ AIDS status. The company, by launching this new campaign, wishes to make it known that it understands the need for employee education about HIV/AIDS infection.” Mr Feng said the company will always pursue an environment to create high level of awareness amongst its employees of how to protect themselves and their families from HIV/AIDS infection.

Young MIT graduate is turning heads over his theory about income inequality Wealthy tech founders and the automation of middle-class jobs are often blamed for increasing concentrations of wealth in fewer hands. But, a 26-year-old MIT graduate student, Matthew Rognlie, is making waves for an alternative theory of inequality: the problem is housing.

Rognlie is attacking the idea that rich capitalists have an unfair ability to turn their current wealth into a lazy dynasty of self-reinforcing investments. This theory, made famous by French economist Thomas Piketty, argues that wealth is concentrating in the top one percent because more money can be

made by investing in machines and land (capital) than paying people to perform work (wages). Because capital is worth more than wages, those with an advantage to invest now in capital become the source of long-term dynasties of wealth and inequality. Rognlie’s blockbuster rebuttal to

Piketty is that “recent trends in both capital wealth and income are driven almost entirely by housing.” Software, robots, and other modern investments all depreciate in price as fast as the iPod. Technology does not hold value like it used to, so it is misleading to believe that investments in capital now will give rich folks a longterm advantage. Land/housing is really one of the only investments that give wealthy people a long-term leg up and this changes how we should rethink policy related to income inequality. Rather than taxing businesses and wealthy investors, “policy-makers should deal with the planning regulations and NIMBYism that inhibit housebuilding and which allow homeowners to capture supernormal returns on their investments.” In other words, the government should focus more on housing policy and less on taxing the wealthy, if it wants to properly deal with the inequality problem.

This is precisely the problem the tech-fueled economy of San Francisco in the United States, where a booming tech sector has increased wages and protected the local economy from the ravages of the recession. Housing prices however, have skyrocketed. Just 14% of homes are affordable to middle-class families. In the once diverse Mission District, where many young tech workers are now relocating, it is hard to find a new home for less than $1.5M. Local housing boards have made it damn-near impossible to build new condos. After much infighting, San Francisco plans on building up to 50,000 more units. However, San Francisco’s chief economist, Ted Egan, estimates that that the city would need at least 100,000 new units to stem increasing costs, let alone bring prices down to something more affordable. If Rognlie is correct and we really care about inequality, it might be wiser to redirect anger towards those who get in the way of new housing, rather than rely on taxes to solve our problems.

Hundreds of workers employed by the China Harbour and Engineering Company gathered in front of NamPort’s head officein Walvis Bay to launch a new campaign against the scourge of HIV AIDS.

Unconventional but effective

The ever popular Mr Neville Basson introduced Dr Quinton van Rooyen to the crowd and through light banter delivered a very important message of personal development and success in business.

Dr Quinton van Rooyen invited guests at the QVR Code event to ask him any and everything. Niel Terblanche Since the very first QVR Code public engagement by the Managing Director of Trustco Group Holdings, Dr Quinton Van Rooyen, the event has become the epitome of unrestricted and open public speaking about issues close to the hearts of many Namibians. The second event in the QVR Code was held in Walvis Bay recently and, gauging by the attendance of people from all walks of life at the conference hall of the Pelican Bay hotel, the occasion might well develop into a series where no holds barred speaking about serious issues might become the order of the day.

At the event, the chairs set out were quickly filled and, with only standing room left, people were forced to stand at the doors of the conference hall to listen to the witty wisdom of one of Namibia’s most successful business personalities. The setting was very informal and Dr van Rooyen was introduced by the ever popular comedian and business personality on his own right, Mr Neville Basson. As the crowd warmed up to the speaker questions started to get serious and the central message delivered by Dr Van Rooyen focussed on a journey of business, personal discovery and motivation to set goals and never lose focus in the quest for the achievement and personal fortune and fulfilment of life.

“Start saving now. Even if it just a little bit of money each month, but if you don’t save up to have a nest egg ready when you want to start a business of your own you are doomed to fail. A lot of people make the mistake of approaching banks and other financial institutions empty handed and without a solid plan expecting to succeed. This is the wrong approach to business.” said van Rooyen. He told the crowd of people that resolute determination is the key to success. Van Rooyen stated that the wrong attitude is the right recipe for disaster. Asked about his opinion on the proposed solidarity tax, Van Rooyen said it is a bitter pill to swallow and that it might lead to situation where the people who are able to start businesses and employ people might stop altogether or go elsewhere. He had the same opinion about the Government’s law on Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment. “Entitlement of people who do not work hard or study to become successful

is making the Namibian nation weak. If unqualified people get jobs that other people should have, the country loses that valuable resource because candidates that get ignored will go and seek their fortune outside the borders of Namibia.” Dr Van Rooyen had a similar view on the provision of houses to the poor and stated that most people that own houses or properties have worked hard to build up a good enough credit record to approach a bank to gain a home loan. He also said that those same people had to continue to work hard to honour the bond repayments besides raising families. He reiterated that a culture of entitlement is dangerous to any country not just Namibia. A participant in the discussion said after the event: “If you want to become a great business personality, a platform like the QVR Code is an excellent opportunity to learn more about achieving personal goals. To be the best you must learn from the best and Dr Quinton Van Rooyen has been there and he has done magical stuff.”

Pupkewitz Motors makes a

strong presence at the coast Donna Collins Pupkewitz Motors has made a strong presence at the coast, with the representation of two dealerships, offering customers a wide variety of value for money brands linked to the Pupkewitz philosophy of customer service. Walvis Bay's Pupkewitz Nissan flies the flag for Nissan as well as the popular GWM brand, where the showroom has established itself as a reliable outlet for the entire range of vehicles, as well as parts and workshop. The multi-franchise Pupkewitz Motors in Swakopmund provides the buyer with something for all tastes and occasions, which includes Nissan, GWM, and the newly launched Datsun. They are also equipped with a full after sales facility and workshop for all the represented brands. The big buzz is the arrival of the Datsun Go 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol four-door hatchback, which arrived earlier this month. Datsun is making a comeback after 27 years and the first cutie was snapped up by a Walvis Bay customer, who will be the first to drive her Datsun Go on Namibian roads. The price

Vasbyt 4x4 'fever' heats up for Dec at Dune7

Vasbyt 4x4 action being held behind Dune7 on the 30th of December promises loads of thrills and spills Donna Collins The hugely popular Wesbank Weskus Vasbyt 4x4 event, which is a traditional highlight of the December festive season down at the coast, is once again being staged and will be held on the 30th December at the Vasbyt Arena at Dune 7. With the event counting towards the Namibian Vasbyt 4x4 National Championships, drivers and co-drivers are not only participating in this highlight of the year - but they are also in it to win it. With five championship events in the year, the Weskus Vasbyt draws a huge competitive edge to the event, which this year promises hoards of spectators, and loads of nailbiting action. Organisers from the Namib Desert 4x4 Club prepare well in advance for this event, which starts at 08:00, with ten gruelling obstacles set out. All but three dune climb obstacles are dished out by nature, the rest of the course is laid out by the guys who know what it takes to overcome the ultimate test in 4x4 driving skills. Other than the moddergat and tyre gat, there will be some extreme inclines, declines and cliff hangers, which will keep the teams on their toes. These obstacles always prove to be a highlight of the day, with technical driver and

navigator know how a crucial part of the show, which sometimes still ends up with the vehicles being towed out of a fix. There are about 23 cars that are expected to take part in the different classes, all of which are awesome and colourful machines. Competitors taking part will be from Windhoek, Otjiwarongo, Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, with invitations extended to SA. Competition is divided into three classes: CLASS A – Short wheel base Standard 4x4 Vehicles, CLASS B – Long wheel base Standard 4x4 Vehicles and CLASS C – Any 4x4 vehicles with limited slip or lockable differentials. In special circumstances they allow CLASS E – Extreme vehicles, normally lightweight specialized and modified vehicles, should there be 2 or more of such vehicles. For the extreme vehicles we normally build in something extra and more difficult to ensure they are put under sufficient pressure. Currently leading the championship point standing are coastal lads Herman and Nico Theron, who are the sons of legendary Vasbyt 'kings', hoping to bring the title trophy home this year in the Modified C Class. They are driving a Ferrari Red Landrover SWB 4x4 driven by a 3.9 V8 Rover engine, which has so far won two events this year, and are ahead of Windhoek rivals Martin

and successful Vasbyt 4x4 event, which has become a not-to-missed event for the holiday season.

Steckels Toyota opens world class N$25-mil showroom

The large new vehicle warehouse with the latest Toyota Corolla on display

MC Uys de Vos hands the keys to the first owner of the brand new Landcruiser 200VX which was unveiled at the opening

Swakopmund Mayor Nehemia Salomon during the ribbon cutting ceremony at the official opening of the N$25million Steckels Toyota Showroom complex, with owners Willie and Hannelie Schoeman and son Willie (Jnr) Donna Collins When you invest N$25-million into opening up a new motor dealership facility, then you must be confident about a number of things - namely your brand, your service, your clientele, your staff and even the stability of your country. But well-known motoring personality and go-getting entrepreneur, Willie Schoeman, ticked all these boxes, saying at the official opening of his spacious, ultra-modern Steckels Toyota dealership that the support of his clients, together with Namibia's peaceful political climate, made it possible to live out his dream. The new Steckels Toyota complex ranks as the flagship Toyota dealership in Namibia, bringing first class international standards to the Erongo region. The official opening attracted over 120 clients, Toyota 'die hards', Toyota SA representatives, Swakopmund Mayor Nehemia Salomon, business associates, friends and family, as well as the compliment of some 50 staff members.

In addition to the unveiling two of the widely anticipated Landcruiser 200 models, priced at N$1.2 million for the top of the range VX, and the N$875 000 GX, there was a variety show of dancers and fire spinners which entertained guests. Both vehicles had been sold before they landed, and the keys of the LandCruiser200 were handed over to its new owner, Dr Willie Davel. The brand new 3 600 sq metre, under roof, Toyota showroom facility accommodates new and Automark pre-owned vehicles, over 12 offices, a parts department, a large workshop with 14 bays, as well as an enormous new stock storeroom which can park up to 60 vehicles. With around N$60 million worth of new vehicles on the showroom floor and parked in the massive stock room, not even this is enough. In fact Schoeman has his eye on an adjacent piece of land to build a second warehouse for his Toyotas, so that clients have a choice without the delay of ordering. The premises situated on the corner Sam Nujoma and Nelson

Mandela drive carries the full range of new Toyota cars, bakkies and SUVs totalling over 12 ranges. This includes everything from an Etios to the top-of-the-range Land Cruiser 200. The new building includes quality Automark Pre-Owned vehicles. The brand new Steckels Toyota showroom is ranked as the flagship Toyota dealership in the country, and has raised the bar in the Erongo Region as being a front runner world class facilitly. There are nearly 50 staff members employed in the various departments ranging from vehicle sales, parts sales, workshop, administration and cleaners to mention some. During the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Mayor said he was honoured to be part of this milestone occasion, and marvelled at the stateof-the-art showroom facility. "Steckels Toyota has built a lasting legacy and I thank Willie and Hannelie for this substantial investment to our town, and for building this beautiful Toyota dealership which will be a true landmark for future generations

when entering Swakopmund." Steckels Toyota comes from a long and interesting history, which dates back to November 1929 when it began as a garage and blacksmith under the trading name Kostens and Steckel. Steckels later became the sole Manager after his partner was interned during world war two, and never returned. Steckels was the first Toyota dealership in the country, and after changing hands and families through the generations was eventually bought out by Schoeman in 1998. Having

been in the motor industry for nearly 30 years, in particular as a Toyota sales executive at Pupkewitz Toyota, Schoeman grew his Toyota brand knowledge, to which he is still true to today. Having started out with humble beginnings at small premises close to the Jetty, then to former premises in town, Schoeman, together with his wife and partner Hannelie took the plunge by investing their last savings in what has been named the "pride of the motor industry" at the coast.

Crossroads Car Sales strives to stock good-as-new bakkies and 4x4s as standard. In 1994 Basie Oosthuizen and his family moved down to Swakopmund to take charge of Crossroads Caltex Service Station. As a teacher, he used to supplement his income by selling cars and this quickly turned into a full time job. In 1996, Basie sold the Service Station and started concentrating mainly on selling bakkies brought in from South Africa. At the time, quality used cars were unknown at the coast and Crossroads Car Sales became a huge success. A few years later, Basie started

Crossroads 4x4 Hire which has since been taken over by his wife, Karen, and grew into a very popular 4x4 rental business at the coast. Crossroads 4x4 Hire rents only Toyota Hilux double cabs kitted out for camping and over land tours. The occasional renting to anglers from South Africa has become an annual event on their calendar. In 2009 the dream of owning their own building was realised and Crossroads Car Sales moved into modern new premises on the corner of Theo Ben Gurirab and Moses Garoëb Street. Crossroads 4x4 Hire moved into the adjoining premises at the same time.

Crossroads Car Sales at your service, here Negumbo Ya Negumbo (sales) with owner Basie Oosthuizen and Antonia Carew (Sales Manager) Crossroads Car Sales has become a well-known business in Namibia and sells vehicles all over Namibia. Due to advertising on the internet, everyone in the country is now a potential client, and Crossroads now has customers from Oranjemund to Katima Mulilo. Basie Oosthuizen has recognised

the fact that customers do not have money to throw around after buying a vehicle and therefore sells serviced vehicles, often with new tyres and even aftermarket items like canopies, rails, tow bars, mag rims, etc. that sets one vehicle apart from the next. Nice looking vehicles sell better, he says. Because a large portion of the

sales are to people living in other regions of the country, the after sales service is contracted to Motorsure, for example, a vehicle can be repaired in Opuwo after Motorsure has issued an order. As new cars are getting more expensive by the day, Basie believes there is a bright future for dealers in used cars. Therefore

Namib desert debuts new

Mercedes Benz SUV range

Mercedes Benz launched its new range of SUV models in the Namib desert, where they didn't fail to impress - namely the iconic face lifted iconic Geländewagen Mercedes-Benz classic off-roader G-Class, the GLE and the brand new mid-sized GLC Donna Collins

that this is the ultimate 'Geländewagen'.

Namibia, in particular the Namib desert, was the playground for the launch of the new Mercedes SUV launch recently, introducing the facelifted G-Class true, GLE, GLE Coupe and the all new GLC, with claims of offering brand die-hards the most luxurious 4×4s and off roaders on the planet. Whilst testing the off-road capabilities of all three models in the ultimate desert terrain, Mercedes-Benz has introduced what it hopes is a simplified new naming strategy for its ever-expanding line up of SUVs. Every Benz built for the dirt now starts with a G badge, which stands for Geländewagen (German for off-road vehicle) and alludes to the long-running G-Wagen. This is followed by the letter L that acts as a linkage with the third letter, which denotes what car this particular SUV is based on. Therefore, the GLE (formerly known as the ML) is based on the Mercedes E-Class sedan while the GLC (formally called the GLK) is the SUV equivalent of the C-Class, and so on.

GLE SUV & Coupe Mercedes-Benz has thoroughly revised its best-seller in the SUV segment - the former 'MClass'. The highlights of the new GLE with six derivatives include considerably more appealing front and tail ends and extensive measures which make new benchmarks with regard to emissions and drive system possible Combining superb ride comfort and versatility, together with the robustness typical of an SUV - the new GLE has all the attributes to continue the success story of the bestseller. The M-Class established the segment of premium SUVs in 1997 and since then has been one of the most successful models in the world, and this one is a sure winner. In addition to the appealing design, the variable driving experience thanks to DYNAMIC SELECT and the assistance systems, the GLE impresses with an extensive engine line-up. Five equally efficient and powerful engines with four, six or eight cylinders to choose from, either in petrol or diesel engines. This baby is priced at N$870 000 for the entry level GLE250d to the top of the range N$1.856-mil for the GLE 63AMGs model.

G-Class The iconic Geländewagen MercedesBenz classic off-roader G-Class has been given an upgrade, and is beginning a new chapter in a success story that spans more than 35 years. With its continuously improved technology and high-class equipment specification, this all-terrain icon has consistently satisfied the highest expectations of off-road fans. All the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class models now offer up to 16 percent more power and up to 17 percent lower fuel consumption. The range includes the G 350 d and the Mercedes-AMG G 63, with new improved performance. The Gelandewagen's signature permanent all-wheel drive, low-range transfer box and three differential locks - all switchable 'on the fly' - are still there, on a revised suspension set-up with damping optimised for reduced body roll and improved on-road ride comfort. Visually, the new G 350 d is especially easy to identify by its restyled sport bumpers front and rear, while AMGstyle body-colour wheel-arch flares are now standard on both, as are 18-inch five-spoke alloy rims, while the AMGs run 20-inch hoops. On the inside, the G 350 d features an eye-catching instrument cluster in twotube look with 11.4 cm multifunction display and redesigned pointers and dials. Priced from over N$1.4-million to the top of the range AMG which comes in at over N$2-million you better believe

New GLC The star of the show is the all new GLC - a mid size SUV which excels with outstanding safety that is a hallmark of the brand. It is a systematic step in the implementation of the Mercedes Benz successful SUV philosophy, combining the ultimate in driving comfort with a sporty touch and comes in at just over N$600 000 with four derivatives on offer for now. The new GLC offers the DYNAMIC SELECT handling control system with five driving programs as standard. For local buyers who have a seemingly unquenchable appetite for SUVs, the GLC offers yet another option to the ever-expanding list. This Mercedes spin on the mid-sized soft roader theme comes with the high-class interiors and high-tech of other modern Benzes. Four models are available on the market launch of the new GLC, all of them equipped with 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive and the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission as standard. There are optional exterior design and equipment lines which build on the entry-level model: Drive the Range The public will be able to drive the brand new range of Mercedes Benz SUV's and more, during the M&Z Motors Walvis

Bay 'Ride and Drive' open day held on Saturday 28th November, where they will be able to test the 4x4 and off road skills of these vehicles. A total of ten different model ranges will be available for a test drive, including the Mitsubishi Pajero, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Renegade and the Fiat500x, all of which will be parked at the Desert Explorers, where the team from M&Z Motors will be there to greet you as from 09h00 to 14h00.

The M&Z Motors Walvis Bay team will be hosting their annual ride and drive on Saturday 28th when the public will get a chance to test their extensive variety of products including the newly launched Mercedes Benz SUV and off-roaders. (Photos Donna Collins)

Auas Motors re-launches Isuzu KB bakkie 'African' style Donna Collins Auas Motors has taken the legendary 6th generation Isuzu bakkie and re-spun the 2.4 petrol 16valve 4x4 double cab derivative especially for the Namibian market - after negotiations with General Motors to manufacture this amazing 'Africa Bakkie' for our specific driving conditions. The Isuzu 'African Bakkie' has been specifically produced for Namibia and brought back by popular demand, as the petrol range was discontinued in South Africa. This limited edition series is available at Auas Motors Walvis Bay (and all other Auas Motors outlets throughout Namibia), which according to its Dealer Principal in Walvis Bay, Gerhard Carstens, is a bakkie not to be missed at this price. He claimed that production of the African Bakkie started off by mid-year 2015, already with orders and sales in the bag by August, with the original price dropping from N$423 000 as listed previously to N$330 000. Customers can now save well over N$90 000, with a 5 year / 120 000 km warranty, 5 year / 90 000 km service plan, SABS approval and a 5 year roadside assistance in place. As with the previous generation Isuzu, the new KB range is powered by a selection of advanced diesel and petrol

engines. In the range is the 2,4 litre 16V DOHC petrol engine available on the Isuzu KB LE models. This Euro II emission specification engine produces maximum power of 112 kW @ 5200 r/min with 233 Nm of torque at 4000 r/min which is featured in the 'African Bakkie' and is well capable to meet your power demands. The Isuzu KB is 260mm, (more than 5%), longer than the previous model. It’s also 60mm wider (up 3%) and 60mm taller (up 3,5%). This translates into an increase in interior space and load box size. The exterior styling of the Isuzu KB benefits from extensive computer analysis of the air-flow around the vehicle supported by full-scale wind tunnel testing to prove out the theory in practice. A noticeable feature on all 4WD and High Ride models is the adoption of integrated steel wheel arch flares in place of the plastic over fenders used on the previous model adding to the overall bold appearance of the new Isuzu KB. The design of the vehicle’s roof, sides and door structure is completely new. A strong design presence is carried through to the frontal view with its striking new interpretation of the well-known Isuzu KB logo and grille. The rear of the Isuzu KB is defined by bold new lamp

Auas Motors special edition 'African Bakkie' is up for grabs at a fantastic price whilst stocks last clusters for bright and clear rear-end lighting. The restyled bumper rounds off the rear view of the new KB. The Isuzu KB Extended Cab models offer the functionality of increased interior load carrying, while the double cab models offer more space for rear seat occupants. The wider and longer cab provides for an increase of 495mm between the rear door opening and the rear seat occupant’s hip-point for easier entry and exit which is class leading space. An increase in rear head room has been achieved through the increased height of the vehicle and a revised angle for the rear seat backrest adds further comfort, especially over long journeys. On double

cab models the rear seat has a 60/40 split. Additional storage compartments are provided in the floor area under the rear seats. The dashboard and centre console is sporty in appearance and functional in design. All switches and controls are logically positioned so they fall easily and naturally to hand for excellent ergonomics. Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning controls are all large diameter rotary type controls placed within easy reach of the driver. The push-button type Four Wheel Drive control of the previous model is replaced with a simple to use single Terrain Command Dial located centrally on the console between the driver and

passenger seats on 4X4 models. Some key specification that sets apart the Africa Bakkie – KB 240 D/Cab 4x4 are; Collapsible steering column, multireflector halogen headlights, driver and front passenger airbags; ABS anti-lock brakes, 7J X 16 alloy wheels fitted with 245/70 R16C tyres; height adjustable driver’s seat; anthracite colour radiator grille, remote control central locking and RDS radio and front loading CD combination with MP3 compatibility, auxiliary port, USB, and iPod functionality and two speakers integrated mobile Bluetooth hands-free system to mention some.

Award winning Indongo Toyota

is the pride of Walvis Bay Donna Collins

The winning management team of Indongo Toyota Walvis Bay: Hanna Moyce (Parts Manager), with Miiranda Viljoen (Dealer Principal), Dewald Els (Sales Manager), Adri Kruger (Financial Manager) and Raymond de Kock (Service Manager)

The name Indongo has for decades carried a commitment level to client service that carries a lot of weight and wide spread respect in various sectors of the market place. Indongo Toyota in Walvis Bay is no exception, and the award winning modern Toyota dealership, with a team of committed management at the helm, are taking the brand to new levels at the coast. In the driving seat is Dealer Principal Miranda Viljoen - a woman who has made great strides in a man's world. She holds down this position as one of only few women DP's in the motor industry, both in Namibia and Southern Africa. She has become the 'darling' of the Frans Indongo Group. And through her strict work ethics, excellent team leadership qualities and commitment to the Toyota brand, has gathered momentum as the powerhouse behind the Indongo Toyota dealership at the coast. So much so, that this year Indongo

13

Toyota Walvis Bay scooped a number of top accolades and awards, namely the Standard Bank best new vehicles sales category, and they also took an accolade at the 2015 Best Customer Service Africa Award. This was the first year the automotive industry entered the awards, and Indongo Toyota clinched Best Overall Motor dealership and Best in category. "We focus on our customer service and need to go that extra mile to stand out from the rest," said Miranda, who is proud of their achievements, saying that she has a first class support team in all the departments. "For us it is not just about sales, but about the whole package and the after sales service. It was also mentioned that the dealership will be running some good specials on selected Toyota brands for the Christmas season shop, with prices down on the Toyota Hilux bakkies, Fortuna, Corolla and Etios. We were also reminded that Toyota customers must remember to book their cars in for a service in advance, as the workshop is busy at this time of the year, with everyone wanting to go on holiday. Indongo Toyota was bought by the Frans Indongo Group in 2004, and in September 2011 revamped the showroom in line with the international Toyota retail concept, as well as the introduction of the Automark pre-owned section. The dealership stocks the full range of Toyta vehicles ranging from an entry level N$135 000 model, to a top-of-the-range Land Cruiser 200 Series.

As another manic motoring year starts drawing to a close, it’s time for us to get into voting mode and choose which vehicles raced our motors the most in 2015. Vehicle sales may be in decline but that hasn’t stopped the floodgates from opening and there has been no shortage of cars, SUVs, or bakkies to consider for our publication’s Best of the Best 2015 awards, with well over 60 new cars and model ranges launched in South Africa this year. A team of motoring journalists has driven them all and we will choose an overall winning vehicle from the lengthy list, as well as victors in the categories of Best Small/Budget Car, Best Family Car, Best Performance Car, Best Adventure Vehicle, and Best Styled Vehicle. In the coming weeks we will list the candidates for the overall and category awards, and announce the winners at a gala dinner in Johannesburg on December 7. The 12 finalists competing for the 2016 SA Car of the Year (CoTY) title has been revealed following a vote by members of

the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ). It looks like the 2016 competition could avoid controversy - there's no Porsche. The 12 finalists include two Opel hatchbacks (Corsa and Adam) and the Jaguar Land Rover duo (XE, Discovery Sport). A notable finalist is BMW's electric hybrid i3. With the aim of rewarding "automotive excellence", the 2016 CoTY Jury will put the finalists through structured testing in early February 2016. The winner will be announced in March 2016 in Gauteng. (IOL Motoring) Each vehicle will be scored and measured against its class competitors on aspects that include: Value for money, safety & technology, performance, overall excellence, interior design & practicality, handling & dynamics and exterior aesthetics. The 12 finalists in random order are: • Opel Corsa • Jaguar XE • Peugeot 308 • Land Rover Discovery Sport • Mazda 2 • Kia Sorento • Citroen C4 Cactus • Honda HR-V • Ford Fusion • Opel Adam • Volvo XC90 • BMW i3

Coastal and Desert

Spinners get into

high gear for 2016 Members of the Coastal Spinning & Drifting Club Swakopmund are looking forward to their new spinning practice grounds next year

Spinning is a popular feature at the Desert Raceway to encourage participation from coastal and inland spinners Donna Collins The gang of coastal spinners from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay are a group of dedicated 'petrol heads' who have developed a form of extreme motorsport, which has become a firm favourite amongst local fans and adrenalin hungry crowds around the country. Members of Desert Spinners Walvis Bay and Coastal Spinning & Drifting

Club in Swakopmund are a growing band of fanatics who keep their enthusiasm going with the hopes of growing the discipline at the coast next year. The Desert Raceway spinning facility was developed to include spinning as a major feature during the dirt oval race programmes, to provide a platform for our local competitors, and extend invitations for, amongst others, the popular Windhoek NAMTOL spinners. Spinning isn't speed but skill, as

New Ranger line-up ahead of the pack! The stakes are high, market domination is the prize and Ford is giving itself a little head start with its upgraded Ranger by hitting dealerships this November. While not new from the ground up like its arch rival from Toyota, the Ranger has been given a rather significant facelift - at least at the front end - and there are upgraded engines beneath the bonnet and a whole suite of new convenience and safety technologies in range-topping models. The 3.2-litre five-cylinder turbodiesel might have the same outputs as its predecessor - 147kW and 470Nm but it does boast a new exhaust gas recirculation system that Ford says makes it up to 18 percent more efficient. The mid-range 2.2-litre TDCi turbodiesel gets a performance boost, with power rising by 8kW to 118kW and torque up 10Nm to 385Nm. The base 2.2 TDCi continues to produce 88kW and 285Nm, while the normally aspirated 2.5-litre petrol is also left unchanged, offering 122kW and 226Nm. The latter two engines are mated to a five-speed

manual model while the high-output 2.2 and 3.2 come with six-speed manual gearboxes, with the 3.2 offering a six-speed auto option in certain models. Other technical changes include fine-tuned suspension, aimed at improving comfort and handling, and extra sound-deadening material to make it even quieter. 4x4 versions continue to offer low-range, electronic locking rear diff, 230mm of ground clearance, 800mm water wading ability and respective approach and departure angles of 28 and 25 degrees. Inside there's a new dashboard that goes big on horizontal lines and higher-spec models (XLT and Wildtrak) receive a new 20cm touch-screen that links you to Ford's Sync2 infotainment system. The Wildtrak takes bakkie tech to a new level with active safety features such as Lane Keeping Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert, Tyre Pressure Monitoring, Driver Impairment Monitor and Park Assist (front and rear). Buyers are truly spoiled for choice here, with a total of 33 different derivatives on offer, spanning Single Cab, Super Cab and Double Cab body styles and numerous specification grades. The Super Cab range has been expanded from five to six models, while two new variants join the Double Cab line-up, including a 2.2 XL 4x4 and a 2.2 XLT. (IOL Motoring)

drivers manoeuvre their vehicles into a small space doing hand break turns, doughnuts and wheel spins whilst churning out as much smoke from their tyres as possible, plus performing daredevil stunts like jumping on the roof whilst the vehicle is in motion. Chris Van Rooyen, President of the Coastal Spinning & Drifting Club in Swakopmund, said that the guys started spinning seriously three years ago, but with limited space to practise, they are waiting for the Municipality to give them an area of ground on which to practise, which will also serve as a club venue for weekly meetings. Whilst they have been given permission to practise at the Arandis Airport, the distance is too far for many of the guys to drive it regularly, so it has not been altogether practical, but it has helped if they have needed that last

N

minute practice before an event. Chris said that the preferred vehicle choice used by spinners are BMWs - mostly because this car can take the revs, they don't give a lot of engine problems and can take the punch. He said that spinning at the coast is really taking off with the guys participating in as many events as possible, both at the Desert Raceway and inland. "Spinning grew from being a "backyard sport" to full motorsport status, taking its place amongst the 'big guns' at the Tony Rust Raceway, and being a massive crowd puller, " said Chris, adding that their club currently has 18 active members, with hope that it will grow next year with the much anticipated practise facility. "We are most grateful to the Desert Raceway owners for creating a professional spinning track which has definitely helped

to grow the sport and provided a platform to perform in front of huge crowds," he added. Chris said that the Coastal Spinning and Drifting Club have had a successful year with team members participating in Okahandja, Rehoboth, Windhoek, Tony Rust and Desert Raceway spinning events to mention some. He explained that, once they have established their own club premises, they will see more members joining the club next year, since already guys are building new cars for next year in anticipation of joining in the action. "We are going to send out invitations to join us for spinning events once we have our premises laid out, and then we will see people coming from all over the country to join in."

Desert Raceway gets pumping for the holiday season Niel Terblanche The Desert Raceway – Walvis Bay’s motorsport mecca, will be the place to be this coming Festive Season with an exciting programme packed with lots of action and entertainment for the whole family. According to the Chairperson of Desert Racing, Lynette Roodt, the raceway will host the last national championship for Namibia on the 12th of December. “In the past, racing was done on the oval track during the day. Ever since we built the new racetrack, events take place at night which makes racing day ideal for hosting exciting programmes preceding the actual heats at night.” She said that the club plans a great gathering of people on the national racing event where, amongst others, a whole host of stalls where all sorts of bric-a-brac will be for

sale, a ‘potjiekos’ competition, a Miss Desert Raceway beauty pageant, and just for the menfolk not to feel left out, the man with the most beautiful beer ‘boep’ will also be crowned on the day! On 26th December, Boxing Day, the coastal spinners and other enthusiasts will entertain the crowd with their antics in the souped-up back wheel drive BMW’s. Another day of festivities will precede the main event day of festivities. Lynette said with all the vehicular action done after Boxing Day, the Desert Raceway will become the site for the second colour festival that will be held at the coast. “Last year the event was held in Swakopmund, but with too much noise pollution being complained about within the town limits, it was decide by the organisers to make use of the Desert Raceway for this year’s event.” The club also plans a huge

His sister in law, Lizaan, has cancer and he is supporting her and his brother Rudi by making their plight known to a broad public New Year’s Eve party at the raceway facilities which will take the form of a rave with a huge stage and a whole host of popular DJ’s entertaining the crowd, well into the New Year. “Tickets for these events, that promise to brighten up an already full

Festive Season schedule, will be for sale at the events but as a club we decided to partner with Compu-ticket in order for people to be able to purchase tickets well in advance.” According to Lynette, with such a full schedule for December, the club

Johan and Johnny plans to hold their annual prize giving ceremony early in January. She said all the winners in the different classes will be crowned at the vent. She also said that the Desert Raceway plans a whole new category of racing for the New Year. “Members of the club and the general public have expressed their interest in the Desert Raceway, hosting old style stock-car racing. The demolition derby type racing is ever popular amongst spectators and we have a few guys already building stock cars for the first race next year.” Lynette said the programme for the Festive Season promises a lot of entertainment and excitement for holidaymakers and locals alike, and that it will definitely add to the holiday cheer.

Driving with peace

of mind this holiday

It is that time of the year when Namibians are getting ready to travel to a holiday destination to spend time with family and friends. Harried Reed, Manager, New Business at WesBank said: “If you are planning a road trip, it’s a smart move to make sure your car is ready for the journey ahead – the last thing you want is a breakdown spoiling your fun.” Check your tyre tread and pressure Hotter temperatures in the summer mean hotter roads too. And that can take its toll on your tyres. You also need to check your tyres’ pressure against the recommended amount for your make and model, not forgetting to check your spare wheel while you’re at it. Check your oil, water and coolant Before setting off on any road trip, make sure your oil, water and coolant levels are topped up. The hotter summer weather can cause coolant levels to drop more quickly which can lead to your car over-heating, and you getting hot and bothered! Check windscreen wipers and screen wash Even on clear summer days, visibility can be a problem. All the dust and dirt kicked up by other vehicles soon mounts up. So it’s vital your windscreen wash is full. Also make sure your wipers (front and rear) are in good working order. Check you have breakdown cover in place Does your car insurance policy include
