Following the appointment of Xaris Energy (Pty) Ltd as the preferred bidder in respect of a proposed 250 megawatts Nampower tender for the Walvis Bay Power Plant Project, the disgruntled “reserve bidder”, Arandis Power (Pty) Ltd opted for a

lawsuit against this decision. As per the founding affidavit of Mr Ezio Vernetti, the Managing Director of Arandis Power, (in Namib Independent’s possession) the President of Namibia, the Cabinet, the Minister of Mines and Energy, Obeth Kandjoze, Nampower, Xaris Energy and also Sinohydro Corporation

Ltd are the six respondents. According to the affidavit, Arandis Power was informed on 13 June 2014 that it was shortlisted as a bidder in respect of the said tender. Following this, advanced negotiations between Nampower and Arandis Power, regarding a 120 megawatts thermal power station which was to be erected near Arandis, were allegedly suspended by Nampower so as to “negate the Continued on Page 3

Motorists can breathe a sigh of relief following the announcement from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) that fuel prices for February 2016 shall remain unchanged countrywide. In the latest statement released, it was said that despite the fact that all products recorded over-recoveries, the Ministry has resolved to keep the fuel pump prices unchanged due to the

recent high exchange rate volatility. However, hopes from the man on the street were high that prices would drop, as consumers budget spending is stretched in all directions with the rising cost of living. But "all is not lost" says the experts, and this glimmer could still become a reality according to Harald Schmidt (CEO Oil industry Secretariat). The founder and owner of the new school, Nikki Ganz Staff reporter

WALVIS BAY: 064-203318 SWAKOPMUND: 064-403418

“It has exceeded all expectations! I am deeply thankful and very excited about the year ahead!” That was how the owner of the Swakopmund Montessori Academy, Nikki Gantz, described the first few weeks since the opening of the school. It has opened its doors this year, with 20 pupils, from 18 families, in Grade 1 to 4, and Ganz says they all seem very happy and well-adapted. A wonderful aroma greeted us at the school when we visited this week – the learners had had a baking session earlier in the day, where a chef helped them to bake plum cake. "At Swakopmund Montessori Academy our mission is to provide an environment which fulfils the emotional, intellectual, physical and social needs of each individual child in a nurturing, secure and academically stimulating environment. We encourage our students to become life-long learners who respect themselves, others and their environment. We also encourage them to develop independence, a love of work and respect for all", says Ganz. The Montessori teaching

method is not an unknown phenomenon at the coast – Walvis Bay also boasts a Montessori hub, and according to Ganz the method is attracting many educators – also handfuls of those who teach in mainstream schools. The past weekend many educators and students participated in workshops at the Montessori Teacher Training College in Walvis Bay. Nikki Ganz herself is a proud product of this institution run by Montessori specialist, Dr Lindsay van den Berg. Ganz says, what makes the Montessori teaching method different from mainstream schools is that each child is allowed to learn at his or her own pace, while working within his or her own, individual curriculum. “In our Montessori school we can accommodate each child’s individual learning style – it’s a fun and easier way to learn, where the really bright child can find his own pace and excel, while those with challenges in one way or another, can find their equilibrium between strengths and weaknesses, and develop and learn at their own pace, without handicapping the fast learners. But we are linked to the National curriculum, and our learners, for instance, will

eventually learn everything necessary, and most likely, more, within the three-year-cycle we work in. We also encourage learners to later on research what interests them, independently – therefore we focus and work intensively at reading, writing and doing mathematics. We had a wonderful discussion on the universe and plate tectonics with the Grade 1 learners the other day, and that is not something you’d usually discuss at that level. ” Ganz says she’s looking forward to seeing how the school and the children develop over the next three years, especially those who came here in need of personal attention and something different. She says the Montessori fraternity is a lively, passionate group of people, who certainly wants to see development and growth within the coastal community. “There are many Montessori teachers in training, and in my group alone, at the workshop over the weekend, there were eighty students – many of them experienced, traditional educators from mainstream coastal schools, who want to enrich themselves for the sake of their learners. I believe this method, and our school, will go from strength to strength.”

perception of bias in favour of a shortlisted bidder”. Out of the six shortlisted bidders, only Xaris, Arandis Power and Sinohydro submitted bids. Vernetti’s affidavit reads that Arandis Power was informed on 21 October 2014 that it had been appointed as “Reserve Bidder” and he remarks that it was evident from this letter that the price quoted by Arandis Power seemed to have been the problem. Letters of concern, regarding the possible integrity of the tender process were apparently submitted to the Minister of Mines and Energy and also Nampower. At a meeting with the Mines and Energy Minister on 17 August 2015, the Minister apparently confirmed that the tender was put on hold, pending a review and decision by President Hage Geingob. The bid submission date was 12 September 2014, but according to Vernetti no formal tender award has been made, as Arandis Power did not receive any official notification from Nampower. On 22 December 2015 the Minister noted in a press statement that “in consultation with the Cabinet Committee and Trade and Economic Development and having briefed the Head of State, the Government has deemed it fit to announce that Nampower shall be empowered to proceed negotiating with Xaris Energy on the 200MW as a short term solution…” under certain provisions. Vernetti is infuriated by the fact that an approval is given for a 200MW plant, whereas the tender called for a minimum capacity of 230MW with a maximum of 250MW. According to the affidavit, Xaris’ current generation license is only for 200MW. He furthermore remarks that

two other shortlisted bidders, PPN Power Generation Company (Pty) Ltd and Sum International Consulting Ltd withdrew from the process, as they did not submit their “Bid Submissions” which required an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA). According to Vernetti, Xaris also did not have the necessary Record of Decision indicating the approval of an ESIA when it submitted its bid, however they were not disqualified. He accuses Nampower of setting “aggressive timelines” in place for the bidders to obtain an ESIA and also of refusing to grant time extensions for submission of bids. “The nomination of Xaris as the preferred bidder, whilst it did not have an ESIA Clearance, is highly questionable”, Vernetti’s affidavit reads. He also lashes out at the President, Cabinet and the Mines and Energy Minister, who apparently made the decision, and remarks that no provision is made in the tender requirements for a third party to decide who must be awarded the bid. Seemingly a letter by the Mines and Energy Minister, dated 28 January 2016 and addressed to Mr Vernetti’s codirector, Mr Johny Ashipala indicates that the matter had been referred to the Office of the Attorney General for further consideration. However, according to Mr Vernetti, the letter did not include any retraction of the decisions to allow Nampower to negotiate a transaction with Xaris and also no timeline as to when the Attorney General would come to a decision as far as the matter was concerned. Thus it was decided to proceed with consultations with counsel and prepare to clarify the matter in court.

Continued from Page 1 Namib Independent, Schmidt said that we would need to wait until March, to see whether the existing over recovery will be passed onto the consumer by means of a reduction of the pump price. "We had a big drop on diesel in January," he reminded. "So for the time being we wait and see what factors influence our pump price, which is predominantly influenced by the exchange rate, but it could still happen." Meanwhile the Ministry Oil trading is conducted with the USD around international markets from which Namibian companies import refined hydrocarbons. The NAD depreciated considerably against the USD over the last month. The average exchange rate stands at NAD 16.1670 per USD compared to NAD 14.7915 per USD for the preceding period. PUBLIC NOTICE HEAD OFFICE PASSAGE CLOSURE

Dear Walvis Bay Residents Kindly be informed that Erongo RED is renovating the 1st floor of the Head Office located at 91 Hage Geingob Street in Walvis Bay. The renovation project is anticipated to be completed in a period of 18 months.

Alessandra Tanzi (in front, left) leading the protest march in Swakopmund Staff Reporter A group of concerned farmers and residents along the Swakop River will do everything possible to protect the underground water from exploitation by mines, more specifically the Husab mine. Members of the community this past week vented their mistrust, suspicion and deep concern in a protest march in Swakopmund, led by Alessandra Tanzi. According to Tanzi, several pumps have been installed, and the mine seemingly has the green light to pump 500 thousand cubic metres of underground water. When Namib Independent spoke to her this week, they were awaiting confirmation of access to the water permit and

environmental impact report – something they have been trying to get access to, for a long time. Tanzi has also indicated that they are willing to go to court in their quest to protect the resource. A letter to President Hage Geingob in this regard has also been prepared this week. “The mine should use desalinated water for its production and leave our precious groundwater alone.” The pumping process has seemingly not started yet, and will allegedly be only an interim measure, until the mine has access to desalinated water through a new pipeline. Tanzi said she would inform Namib Independent if and when they have been granted access to the mine documents and impact study report.

Therefore, please take note that the pedestrian passage connecting Hage Geingob Street & Sam Nujoma Avenue will be closed for the duration of the project. However, a small portion of the passage infront of the Erongo RED Customer Care Office will be open for customers to access the Customer Care Office. Police hunt for copper

thief gathers momentum Crime reporter A 45-year-old Malawi long haul driver, Richman Terri Chirwa is on the run after being involved in a N$ 2.5-million copper heist in Walvis Bay recently, and whilst the truck was recovered, the hunt is on by the Walvis Bay Police for the suspect who vanished into thin air with the loot. A reward of N$500 000 has been offered by Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), for any information leading to the recovery of this consignment as well as the arrest of those involved. The consignment of copper was from Zambia and destined for the international market. confirmed this week that, after immediately launching a search for the missing copper truck, police found it abandoned in the Industrial area on Monday 1st February. The truck was stripped of its copper but no damage was incurred to the vehicle, which has been returned to the owner. The full truck load, along with a convoy of four other copper carrying trucks, was last seen parked on Sunday afternoon,

31 January, in the vicinity of Namport's entrance. The trucks were waiting for instruction from the owner, and since they had arrived on the week-end, everything was put on hold for the following morning for the Corridor Logistics Group to arrange for entry and offloading documentation. "In this process it was discovered that one of the drivers and his truck could not be found and, when he had still not shown up by late afternoon, the red flags went up and the matter was immediately reported to us. "Whilst the waiting game continued, and the driver's phone switched off, the matter took on a serious note," he said. "It was assumed that he must have found a buyer to ship the copper out, and that this was a well thought out crime as he had moved overnight about 34 metric tons of copper," continued the Detective. "You cannot simply transfer this amount of copper and weight by hand, and must have the right machinery to offload this load from one truck to another, as well as having a truck available with

an equal carrying capacity," he explained, adding that the nature of this heist was executed by an organised group. He said that Police countrywide alerted for this driver on the run, and to determine where the stolen copper is, as it is presumed that it is possible that it was stored in a warehouse until the heat is off. "We want both the driver and the copper and won't give up the hunt. We are asking the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of this man, and with the handsome reward offered, we are hoping that people will talk." The public or any one with direct information are requested to contact Detective Chief Inspector Mwatongwe at the Walvis Bay Police on +264 81 246 1121. It was mentioned that the police had one other case of stolen copper in 2014, but they made a successful arrest and recovery. Meanwhile the WBCG and partners urges the general public and the industry at large to continue with collaborative efforts to curb any and all attempts at theft and pilferage, as this will have

Cargo theft is an international problem affecting consumers and businesses alike, which is spurred on by economic crisis increasing the worldwide demand for black market goods. It is said that Walvis Bay Corridor Group and partners has over the years worked tirelessly to promote the port of Walvis Bay and the Walvis Bay Corridors as a safe, reliable and cost effective trade route to and from landlocked SADC. Driver on the run Richman Terrie Chirwa from Malawi is wanted by the Walvis Bay police in connection with copper heist worth N$ 2.5 million.

The Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) has an office in Brazil since 2012 in order to promote business development efforts between Namibian and Brazilian companies so as to promote the facilitation of trade from that country through Namibia to the rest of Southern Africa. Recently, the WBCG entered into a cooperative agreement with the Afro Brazilian Chamber of Commerce (Afrochamber) and will through the NCCI work on a chamber-tochamber basis to improve and create more interest between Namibian and Brazilian companies through their office there. The Namibia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) is a member of the WBCG and it serves as the country’s business chamber, therefore serving a convenient central point of enquiry for any potential corridor user who wishes to gain insight into Namibia’s business community. The WBCG is continuously looking at different ways to strengthen and collaborate with Brazilian organisations to compliment our efforts of connecting the rest of the world to Southern Africa. We do all this through partnership with our members. The agreement comes at a time when Namibia is transforming into a fullyfledged logistics hub to serve southern Africa and its more than 300 million inhabitants. The cooperative agreement will allow the two chambers to strengthen the bonds of friendship and spirit of cooperation, as well as encourage and facilitate contacts between enterprises and other private sector groups in each other's territories. The alliance has the potential to act as a powerful catalyst

to expand trade and to strengthen economic relations between our two countries. The areas of cooperation identified include logistics, technology and technical assistance, as well as trade and industry. As part of this cooperation, the WBCG will attend and participate in events organised by the Afrochamber such as trade fairs, exhibitions, seminars, missions and other events that occur in Brazil and in turn the Afrochamber will partake in events organised by the WBCG through the NCCI. The agreement also allows the two parties to collaborate to enhance the exchange of information about socioeconomic aspects of their respective countries and contribute to the formation of joint ventures and the establishment of Namibian and Brazilian companies in the private sector of each other’s countries. The agreement also commits the two chambers to promote and share information about trade missions, briefings, market research, foreign trade statistics, business opportunities or any other information of economic and commercial interest. Expected outcomes from the agreement include increase in trade relations between Brazil, Namibia and other SADC countries. WBCG Business Development Manager in Brazil, Ricardo Latkani, explains he has already started working closely with the Afrochamber to actively promote and develop initiatives to strengthen cooperation between business and corporate structures in both countries. To this end, the WBCG remains committed to connecting southern Africa to the rest of the world.

Coastal Pirates Inline Hockey’s Super Spar Business League The annual Coastal Pirates Super Spar Business League took place at the Swakopmund Indoor Sport Centre last weekend with 91 matches played, some after midnight! Thirty seven sponsored teams entered in this fun-filled fundraising tournament, with teams combining players from the five clubs across the country. Wonderful team spirit could be witnessed at this first tournament of the inline hockey season, and as has become tradition, many teams wore amazing outfits. For the first time, a Junior Ladies Division was added, as

part of the drive to encourage girls in the sport. It was well-supported, with a highly competitive final match, won by Team Yellow against Team Green. The 8U/10U Division combined experienced players with new players and four year old beginners. The Green team beat the Red team in the final. The Ninjas in Pajamas won the 16U/18U Division final match against the Benchwarmers. All the teams in these Finals received vouchers from Super Spar and Coastal Cellular airtime. The 12U/14U Division drew a lot of interest with eight teams that entered. Many younger, less experienced players showed their

stamina and determination, playing hard and standing their ground against stronger competitors. The final match ended in a draw, with a penalty shootout win for the Physio Rollers against Team Muscle. They will enjoy using their Bits ‘n Pizza vouchers! The Ladies teams competed for Cafe Anton vouchers with The Originalz taking first place against the Rolling Stones. The Ladies Masters team sponsored by Rennies Travel lost to the Grannies team; and the Masters team, Flo Und Die Handwerker, battled it out against the Dare Devil Adventures team, all winning vouchers from Super Spar. The skilled players in the Open Division are always good to watch and the action was guaranteed to be fast-paced. The Trigger Happy Coconuts were defeated by the Super Mario Bros sponsored by the Infinity Lounge. The finalists received Brauhaus

vouchers. The Infinity Lounge’s Super Mario Bros team also won the Best Dressed Senior Team prize sponsored by Damarana Safari’s. The Junior Best Dressed team prize, sponsored by Weimann’s Carpentry, went to the Fairies 12U/14U team who delighted spectators as the girls played aggressive hockey while dressed with fairy wings. After enjoying a weekend with mixed teams, allowing players to form teams with their club rivals, players will focus on training hard for the NIIHA league tournaments throughout the year where the five clubs fiercely compete against one another to determine the Namibian champions.

Atterbury and Safland Properties join forces in Walvis Bay Staff Reporter The Walvis Bay “war of the malls” has officially ended. This was confirmed on Friday, 5 February 2015 in a joint press statement by Louis van der Watt, CEO of Atterbury Properties and Kallie van der Merwe, CEO of Safland. It was also confirmed that the parties will pool all their Walvis Bay assets with the aim to undertake all the future developments in a 50/50 joint venture partnership. This is not the first time that these two Companies partner as they also co-developed the Grove Mall of Namibia in Windhoek. “We regard Walvis Bay as a rapidly growing market but it is currently still too small to justify two competing Malls, both with a shopping area

greater than 20 000 square meters. Deciding between the two development sites was more difficult but the Atterbury site was chosen due to its greater size that would allow for more future expansion to the Mall.” “As developers we share a greater responsibility towards the Town, retailers, investors, financiers and a number of other key stakeholders, and this decision was made with their best interest in mind.” The newly named Dunes Mall will offer shoppers approximately 30 000 square meters of shopping space and tenants have been identified for the bulk of this rentable area. The estimated value of Dunes will be N$ 650 million and the Mall will open its doors end 2017. Atterbury and Safland will now also co-own and develop the prime land situated just off the

Diaz circle, at the intersection of the Airport and Swakopmund roads and this will be done in a manner which will take full advantage of this prime position. Atterbury is a leading developer of retail shopping malls in Africa and Safland is the dominant retail mall developer in Namibia. Dunes Mall, once completed, will be housed in the Nguni Property Fund, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Tradehold Group. Nguni will be listed on the NSX later this year. Both developing companies share a passion for excellence which is reflected in Grove Mall. “What we want to offer shoppers is an experience that is now known as “shoppertainment”. Our responsibility and aim is to not only cater for the people of Walvis Bay, but for the needs of the people in the greater Erongo region.”

Dunes Mall, once completed, will become the largest shopping Mall in Namibia outside of the capital Windhoek and this underlines the importance of Walvis Bay as a growth node in the country. “Malls usually follow people but we have seen the effect of malls as a catalyst for further development in Namibia. An excellent example is the Grove Mall of Namibia that after one year is already surrounded by new developments that include MegaCentre, Lady Pohamba Hospital, and Virgin Active. A Town Lodge Hotel will soon be added to this business hub.” The Mall will be a great driver for job creation in Walvis Bay and approximately 700 people can expect to be employed in the completed development.

America awaits bright mind, Omar van Reenen Staff reporter

The 2015 Junior Mayor of Walvis Bay, Eusebio Omar van Reenen, is just awaiting confirmation of placement with the State University of New York, Oswego, USA, where he was awarded a scholarship last year, and he’ll be off to the land of opportunity. He’ll do a BSc in Biochemistry and Biology, Genetics and Microbiology to follow his dream of becoming a scientist and researcher of note. “I will start in August, in the fall semester. My aspiration is to eventually help discover a new means to eradicate viruses and illnesses. I yearn to find breakthroughs in treating cancerous food products and to help end the AIDS pandemic. I believe, with acknowledgement to my teacher, Mr Feris, that one can only achieve your dreams if you work hard and desire less, while pursuing your destiny.” Van Reenen says he’s been greatly inspired by the Namibian cancer researcher, Johanna Amunjela, who’s doing her PHD in Aberdeen, Scotland. The 29-year old Amunjela, who also grew up in Walvis Bay and matriculated at Kuisebmond Secondary School, is one of the pioneers in the field of cancer research. She gave a presentation in Cambridge last year, before leading cancer researchers of the world. “Johanna Amunjela has, since April last year, become an idol and a role model to many young Namibians, through her work in the field of cancer research. Because of her I began to pursue my destiny and trusted that I myself, too, could become a great scientist. She has

meanwhile become a mentor to me. She is a pure example of a role model. These days teenagers tend to confide in celebrities as their inspiration. But I see her as mine, a young woman from my community who made it to PhD studies at a highly recognised tertiary institution abroad, in a very selective field of study. Not many young people get to make it that far and change the world as she’s doing – and if she can, so can I,” says Van Reenen. Johanna Amunjela agrees with Van Reenen, that the Namibian youth need role models. She says it should preferably be Namibians who excel and who could inspire students to reach for the skies at every possible level, to really make a difference and help uplift Namibians in every sector of society. “The youth of Namibia should not necessarily have to follow international pop stars and other glitterati as idols – they should have Namibian examples to inspire them and let them pursue their dreams. I shall never forget the evening in Cape Town, when I saw a TV news insert about Dr Jacob van Zyl, a Namibian who is a leading figure at NASA, and who at that moment was such an inspiration to me – I thought, if he could make it in the world outside, so could I. It gave me the courage to come to Scotland and do cancer research here.” Amunjela says many Namibians have contacted her since last year, after media reports about her cancer research had been published. “Sometimes, when there’s a less successful day in the laboratory, and I miss my people and my country, then I revisit all the letters and messages of encouragement

I received from people in Namibia – and then I feel strengthened and positive and happy – and inspired to continue my quest for successful treatment for cancer.” Amunjela says the project focuses on therapeutic target identification and validation, which is in the very early stages of drug/medicine discovery. “The project has identified that Popdc proteins play a significant role in promoting cancer cell growth and migration. These proteins are potentially promising therapeutic targets in treating brain and breast cancer tumour growth and metastasis. We are therefore in the very early stages of testing the validity and potential of these proteins as therapeutic targets in the treatment of these cancers. The current aim of the study is to determine how Popdc proteins cause cancer cells to grow and spread in the body so that we can figure out how these proteins can be manipulated to stop cancer

cell growth and migration/spread. We initially started working on six cancers but have narrowed down the project to focus on brain and breast cancer. The type of breast cancer we work on is a breast adenocarcinoma. Breast cancer in general is classified by the world health organisation (WHO) as the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the world. The type of brain cancer we work on is Glioblastoma Multiforme, which is a grade 4 brain cancer and is one of the most aggressive and deadliest types of primary brain tumours.” Amunjela and her team will hopefully publish their latest findings later this year. Amunjela, who visited the Namibian coast during the festive season, says she’s happy that she could inspire young Namibians like Omar van Reenen, and that she would love to keep inspiring the Namibian youth. She returned to Scotland in January to continue with her research, but says she plans to play a much more active role in inspiring young Namibians.

British High Commission hosts workshop in Swakop Staff reporter

REWARD N$500 000 OFFERED FOR INFORMATION LEADING TO RECOVERY OF MISSING COPPER CONSIGNMENT The Walvis Bay Corridor Group and partners has over the years worked tirelessly to promote the port of Walvis Bay and the Walvis Bay Corridors as a safe, reliable and cost effective trade route to and from landlocked SADC. Through both private and public sector efforts these initiatives has culminated in various commodities from the hinterland reaching its international markets through the port of Walvis Bay. Not only has the increased logistics and transport activities via Namibia greatly contributed towards the countries economic growth ideals, it further strengthens regional integration by providing an alternative trade route for SADC Countries.

A practical two-day workshop delivered by the British High Commission and Namibia’s Ministry of Finance, together with British Expertise was delivered in Swakopmund, to share key lessons arising from UK experience and from the roll-out of Public Private Partnership laws in other African jurisdictions. The aim of the workshop was to support the development of PPP in Namibia. His Excellency Jo Lomas (British High Commissioner to Namibia), commented: "Economic growth in Namibia is essential to support the anti poverty campaign and that can realistically only be achieved with the help of private finance. The UK therefore supports the development of PPP as a strong and credible part of Namibia’s broader programme for infrastructure and economic development." The training was delivered by Malcolm Dowden from British Expertise and the Law Society of England and Wales. Dowden is a UK lawyer with more than 20 years’ experience of infrastructure and

communications projects. Delegates were drawn from across government, representing key commissioning and spending departments. With more than 100 countries worldwide seeking to attract investment in PPP projects, success depends on the strength and credibility of a country’s laws, government institutions and project preparation. Saurabh Suneja, Director of Public Private Partnerships at the Ministry of Finance, launched the workshop with an overview of Namibia’s policies and preparations for PPP, including new laws and regulations currently under discussion. His presentation established a central theme for the workshop: every project must be carefully designed to meet a specific social need and must be based on the principle that payment follows delivery by the private sector. “We are delighted to have run this important training and are grateful for the support of the Ministry of Finance and the Governor of Erongo." concluded Lomas.

10 Valentine's Day traditions ‘Closest-ever’ asteroid With Valentine's Day just around the corner, stores are flooded with candy hearts, chocolates and stuffed animals. Shelves are brimming with teddy bears and boxes of chocolate are typical Valentine's Day fare, but not every country turns to greeting cards and heart-shaped candies to declare love. Here is a look at how 10 countries celebrate Valentine's Day traditions all around the world. Denmark: Although Valentine's Day is a relatively new holiday in Denmark, the country has embraced February 14th with a Danish twist. Rather than roses, friends and sweethearts exchange pressed white flowers called snowdrops. Another popular tradition are the "lover's cards", while lover's cards were originally transparent cards which showed a picture of the card giver presenting a gift to his sweetheart, the term is now synonymous with any card exchanged on Valentine's Day. Men also give women gaekkebrev, a "joking letter" consisting of a funny poem or rhyme written on intricately cut paper and signed only with anonymous dots. If a woman who receives the gaekkebrev can correctly guess the sender, she earns herself an Easter egg later that year. France: It has been said that the first Valentine's Day card originated in France when Charles, Duke of Orleans, sent love letters to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1415. Today, Valentine's Day cards remain a popular tradition in France and around the world. Another traditional Valentine's Day event was the loterie d'amour, or "drawing for love." Men and women would fill houses that faced one another, and then take turns calling out to one another and pairing off. Men who were not satisfied with their match could simply leave a woman for another, and the women left unmatched gathered afterward for a bonfire. During the bonfire, women burned pictures of the men who wronged them and hurled swears and insults at the opposite sex. The event became so uncontrollable that the French government eventually banned the tradition all together. South Korea: Valentine's Day is a popular holiday for young couples in South Korea, and variations of the holiday are celebrated monthly from February through April. The gift-giving starts on February 14th, when it is up to women to woo their men with chocolates, candies and flowers. The tables turn on March 14th, a holiday known as White Day, when men not only shower their sweethearts with chocolates and flowers, but up the ante with a gift. For those who do not have much to celebrate on either Valentine's Day or White Day, there is a third holiday: Black Day. On April 14th, it is customary for singles to mourn their solitary status by eating dark bowls of jajangmyeon, or black bean-paste noodles. Wales: You will not find the Welsh celebrating Saint Valentine - instead, people in Wales celebrate Saint Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers, on January 25th. One traditional romantic Welsh gift is a love spoon. As early as the 17th century, Welsh men carved intricate wooden spoons as a token of affection for the women they loved. Patterns and symbols were carved into these love spoons, each signifying a different meaning. A few examples include horseshoes, which stand for good luck; wheels, which symbolize support; and keys, which symbolize the keys to a man's heart. Today, love spoons are also exchanged for celebrations such as weddings, anniversaries and births. China: The equivalent to Valentine's Day in China is Qixi, or the Seventh Night Festival, which falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month each year.

According to Chinese lore, Zhinu, a heavenly king's daughter, and Niulang, a poor cowherd, fell in love, married and had twins. When Zhinu's father learned of their marriage, he sent his queen to bring Zhinu back to the stars. Upon hearing the cries of Niulang and the children, the king allowed Zhinu and Niulang to meet once a year on Qixi. During Qixi, young women prepare offerings of melon and other fruits to Zhinu in hopes of finding a good husband. Couples also head to temples to pray for happiness and prosperity. At night, people look to the heavens to watch as stars Vega and Altair (Zhinu and Niulang, respectively) come close during the starcrossed pair's annual reunion. England: On the eve on Valentine's Day, women used to place five bay leaves on their pillows - one at each corner and one in the center - to bring dreams of their future husbands. Alternatively, they would wet bay leaves with rosewater and place them across their pillows. In Norfolk, Jack Valentine acts as a Santa of sorts for Valentine's Day. Children anxiously wait to hear Jack Valentine knock at their doors, and although they do not catch a glimpse of Old Father Valentine, children enjoy the candies and small gifts left on their porches. Philippines: While Valentine's Day celebrations in the Philippines are similar to celebrations in Western countries, one tradition has swept the country and led to thousands of couples sharing a wedding day on February 14th. Mass wedding ceremonies have gained popularity in the Philippines in recent years, leading hundreds of couples to gather at malls or other public areas around the country to get married or renew their vows en masse. Italy: Originally, Italians celebrated Valentine's Day as the Spring Festival. The young and amorous gathered outside in gardens and such to enjoy poetry readings and music before taking a stroll with their beloved. Another Italian tradition was for young, unmarried girls to wake up before dawn to spot their future husbands. The belief was that the first man a woman saw on Valentine's Day was the man she would marry within a year, or he would at least strongly resemble the man she would marry. Today, Italians celebrate Valentine's Day with gift exchanges between lovers and romantic dinners. One of the most popular Valentine's Day gifts in Italy is Baci Perugina, which are small, chocolate-covered hazelnuts wrapped with a romantic quote printed in four languages. Brazil: With Carnival held sometime in February or March each year, Brazilians skip the February 14th celebration and instead celebrate Dia dos Namorados, or "Lovers' Day," on June 12th. In addition to the usual exchanges of chocolates, flowers and cards, music festivals and performances are held throughout the country. Gift giving is not limited to couples, either. In Brazil, people celebrate this day of love by exchanging gifts and sharing dinner with friends and relatives, too. The following day is Saint Anthony's Day, which honors the patron saint of marriage. On this day, single women perform rituals called simpatias in hopes that St. Anthony will bring them a husband. South Africa: Like many parts of the world, South Africa celebrates Valentine's Day with festivals, flowers and other tokens of love. It is also customary for women in South Africa to wear their hearts on their sleeves on February 14th; women pin the names of their love interest on their sleeves, an ancient Roman tradition known as Lupercalia. In some cases, this is how South African men learn of their secret admirers. Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

will pass earth next month

On March 5th, 2016, asteroid TX68 will be the closest ever flyby of an asteroid to ever approach the earth. The asteroid will pass by the planet at a distance of 17,000 km. Asteroid 2013 TX68 is currently estimated to be about 45 meters across and has an estimated mass of about 130,000 metric tons. The space rock is traveling at about 51,839 kilometres per hour, relative to Earth. The asteroid’s orbit is highly uncertain (condition code 7) and it will be hard to predict where to look for it, experts say. According to NASA, if an asteroid of a size similar to that of 2013 TX68 were to impact Earth, it would release approximately 2.5 megatons of energy in the atmosphere and would be expected to cause regional devastation. A comparison to the impact potential of an asteroid the size of 2013 TX68 could be made to the impact of a near-

Earth object that occurred in 1908 in Tuguska, Siberia. Known in the asteroid community as the “Tunguska Event,” this impact of an asteroid just slightly smaller than 2013 TX68 (approximately 30-40 meters across) is believed to have flattened about 2200 square kilometres of forest in and around the Podkamennaya Tunguska River in what is now Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The asteroid was discovered by the NASA-funded Catalina Sky Survey on October 6, 2013, as it approached Earth on the night-time side. After three days of tracking, the asteroid passed into the daytime sky and could no longer be observed. Because it was not tracked for very long, scientists cannot predict its precise orbit around the sun, but they do know that it cannot impact Earth during its flyby next month. Giant rabbit from Scotland This giant rabbit is in search of his Hoppy Ever After. The Scottish SPCA is looking for someone to adopt its continental giant rabbit named Atlas. Staff at the center in Cardonald, Glasgow, took in the 7-month-old continental giant rabbit when his owner could no longer look after him, the Scottish SPCA said in a press release. "Atlas is already about the size of a westie and is still young with some growing to do," said centre manager Anna O'Donnell. "He is a very friendly rabbit who loves attention and getting cuddles." On Facebook, the SPCA called Atlas a, "larger than life rabbit." But not just anyone can care for this big bunny. O'Donnell said a standard rabbit hutch will not do for Atlas. The new owner will need plenty of space for this growing rabbit. They also said they are ideally

looking for someone who has kept a continental giant before. "We are looking for a specific home for Atlas due to his breed and size," O'Donnell said. Source: www.cbsnews.com
