A heated international debate has ignited on the backdrop of the Ministry of Tourism and Environment’s decision to sell a rhino hunting permit to the Dallas Safari Club, an American organisation, in order to raise funds for wildlife conservation. The news, which has been reported on by international media outlets worldwide, including CBS and CNN, has drawn criticism from animal rights activists who point out that this action sends the wrong signal and increases demand for rhino hunting. However, the Dallas Safari Club organisers argue that the selling of this permit can raise up to $1 million to donate to environmental conservation in Namibia. The Dallas Safari Club is a Texas-based organisation that promotes conservation, youth outreach programs and the protection of hunter’s rights. DSC Executive Director, Ben Carter, stressed that DSC is targeting an old non-breeding bull that has tendencies to be territorial, aggressive and population limiting. “Science shows that eliminating certain individual rhinos will increase herd survival and help populations grow. This hunt is a way to accomplish that goal while generating major funding for other crucial elements of rhino conservation,” Carter explained. Armed Robbers Steal More Than N$300 000 in Nampost Heist Dorcas Mhungu On Monday an armed gang of five men robbed Nampost Kuisebmond Post Office at closing time and got away with
more than N$300 000. The modest, high density suburb branch does not have surveillance cameras for their banking. Their absence could have made it an easy target to the daring and

The post will be based at the Albatross Task Force office in Walvis Bay. The ATF project manager will be responsible for the administrative management of the Albatross Task Force (ATF) project in Namibia, working with fishermen, industry representatives and government institutions to reduce the incidental mortality of albatrosses and other seabirds in longline and trawl fisheries. Defining bycatch mitigation options in national policy instruments and training fishermen to adopt proven mitigation measures will help eradicate
the threat of extinction to globally threatened seabirds in the context of BirdLife’s ‘Save the Albatross’ campaign. The project manager will develop systems and partnerships for local production of mitigation devices; will see through to adoption the various policy instruments that will ensure standardized approaches to seabird bycatch mitigation in target fisheries, and advance policy changes in Namibian fisheries to bring Namibia in line with current best practice for avoiding or reducing seabird bycatch in fishing operations.

with a population of roughly 1 800 black rhinos. Namibia is also the only country where one can still find freeroaming rhinoceroses let out from National Parks into their natural habitat. On the forefront of this is the independent organisation Save The Rhino Trust. Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Marcia Stanton, told the Namib Independent that the Save The Rhino Foundation was never approached by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and has no say in this matter. “We all have our own individual
opinions, but we don’t want to become involved. We work very hard to raise money, and we feel that this is an easy way out,” Marcia pointed out. “We work very well together [with the ministry]” she continued. “I guess they know what our stance would be [on rhino hunting], so of course they wouldn’t want to involve us.” The main argument, she says, for hunting Rhinos is that by making the rhino worth something, you encourage its conservation. “Making money from hunting other animals, that are not endangered, like springbok,
to protect endangered species could be viable. Where it gets controversial is when you start hunting endangered species.” Marcia also questioned the arguments behind killing a nonproductive rhino. “I think they [DSC] were trying to come up with a strange reasoning, all animals are important to the population.” Marcia cited an example of how older Elephant bulls being poached off in Zimbabwe left the younger calves unguided and consequently rouge. “There is much that we still don’t know.
In the big scheme they [older Rhino bulls] have that role, it’s a natural response for them to attack or become aggressive, we think we know why they do it, but we don’t really.” Marcia warned that “any mistake can become disastrous down the line.” Although the Dallas Safari Club will be donating 100% of the money raised to the Ministry of Environment, presently there is no specific government rhino conservation program, so this begs to ask what guarantee there is that the funds from this hunting will go towards Rhino
protection exclusively, as claimed by the Ministry and the Dallas Safari Club, and not to the other numerous conservation initiatives that the Ministry undertakes. After numerous attempts, the Namib Independent was unable to reach the Ministry for comment. Meanwhile, an online petition to stop the selling of said permit has reached over 40 000 signatures. "The Post Office is equipped with a panic button and alarm system and the Postal Management team is now looking at alternative measures to ensure the safety of the Post Office, customers and staff by installing cameras and safety glass. "We responded swiftly when one of the employees pressed the panic button but when we got there the robbers were gone and the people locked inside had managed to come out when other staff opened for them because the robbers took all the keys,” Viljoen told the Namib Independent. Responding to a query why his man manning the outlet is not armed, Viljoen said he does not issue armed men at institutions that deal with a lot of clients as a precautionary measure. “The situation can get out of control when there is exchange of fire and this can result in injuries or in the death of innocent civilians,” Viljoen added.

Dorcas Mhungu Yesterday morning a young man was found hanging in a tree behind the Walvis Bay Municipality. An eyewitness said that after hearing his dogs barking continuously around 7 a.m. he went out to see what was wrong and noticed that across the road was a group of people chatting and pointing to a tree.
He saw a police vehicle arrive and the body being taken away. Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu confirmed the suicide and said police found an identity card and bank statements but at the time of print, could not confirm whether the documents belonged to the deceased. No suicide note was on the man. Iikuyu said police are investigating the suicide and locating his next of kin.
Break-in at Erongo Red Siglinde de Villiers An unknown number of suspects broke into the Erongo Red Office in Kuisebmond on Tuesday night and made off with the cash in the tills. “The Customer Care staff unlocked the door this morning but was surprised when nothing happened. "This raised their suspicions and they went to investigate, only to discover that thieves had entered the building and disconnected the alarm,” said Georgina Wohler, Public Relations Assistant of Erongo Red. According to Wohler the thieves had cut a hole in the ceiling and entered through the roof. The thieves managed to break in despite the alarm going off. “The security company did send one of their guards out, but he found everything calm on the outside of the building and nothing
more was thought of it,” Wohler explained. According to her, the thieves did not get away with much, only the cash flow that was in the tills at the time, which amounts to an
estimated N$500. Wohler said that the culprits have not yet been found and that the case is still under investigation.

Business and Tourism Expo a Huge Success The Erongo Business and Tourism Expo was a huge success in comparison to previous years and provided an ideal platform for many exhibitors to conduct business and connect on an international scale. It is predicted that the Expo will grow into the biggest event at the coast in the years to come. According to Johan van Zyl, Chief Co-ordinator of the Erongo Trade Expo, every year the organisers of the Erongo Trade Expo aim to present a better exhibition than before. “The feedback is that this year again this achievement has been echoed and there were notably more visitors than previous years as we have done a lot more on marketing the event than before,” he said. This sentiment was shared by Liz Sibindi, Corporate Communications Manager for Namport, when she said in a speech that, as an organisation, they are very pleased with the growth of the Expo over the years. The purpose of the Trade Expo is to facilitate the economic growth and to place Namibia on an international market. “The Trade Expo has a
primary focus to present a platform for exhibitors to promote their products and services in relation to Business and Tourism,” van Zyl said. According to Sibindi, it also forms an essential marketing tool to stimulate and promote the local and regional trade and industry as well as providing a stronger business presence in the country. “This year’s Expo presented the community and visitors the pleasure of various entertainment activities from young to old,” van Zyl added. Sibindi also mentioned that the Expo attracted local and international partners, particularly in the transport and logistics sector. “Most people locally and abroad know of the rapid economic growth of the Erongo Region and it is foreseen that Namibia is prone to become the largest business hub, where Erongo will be the gateway for inflow of revenue from beyond our borders,” van Zyl explained. According to van Zyl, this year’s Trade Expo was rendered unique by including a Gala evening for the crowning of Miss Erongo Expo 2013. In addition, the Expo was filling the venue to the brim due to increasing interest of exhibitors – both inside and outside.
“We have made a special effort with the SME Exhibitiors and they have received prior training from SME Compete. In the last minutes, we had to add extra marquees to accommodate the inflow of exhibitors and a number of them were new. We had approximately 30% more exhibitors in comparison to 2012. “As a result the Expo was quite notable and impressive to the extent that some of them made good profits and business connections,” van Zyl explained. Despite the success of the Expo, van Zyl mentioned the accompanying challenges. “With the intended scope of expansion of the Expo in years to come, our biggest challenge is to review the possibilities of the venue to cater for such expansion.” “The possibility exists that this Expo will become one of the biggest, if not the biggest, event in years to come. All the indicators are positive and we already started with the planning of the next Business and Tourism Expo. The support and sponsorships by Namport, Municipality of Walvis Bay and Erongo Red added much value to present a successful Expo,” van Zyl concluded.
Beaming Seniors Attend Lunch for the Elderly Lavrenty Repin
On Thursday last week, the annual lunch for the elderly was held in the tent that was originally set up for the Adventure Travel World Summit. Busses picked up the roughly 425 elders, many of whom are DRC residents, and brought them to the venue behind the Swakopmund Hotel and Casino Resort. The municipality-held initiative, which relies on funding from the Swakopmund business community, was well received by the senior folk. They enjoyed a three-course buffet meal, and further received food hampers. Those that attended last year’s event held in Longbeach, pointed out that this was even better organised. 63-year-old Mondesa resident, Mr Thomas Elefas, joyfully exclaimed: “Ek foel baie lekker, ek get mooi geëet, ek het mooi gedrink en ek het mooi in die bus gery!” (“I feel very good, I ate nicely, I drank nicely and rode nicely on the bus!”) Speaking to the Namib Independent, Mayor Juuso Kambueshe said that this was an
early Christmas present for the senior citizens present. “This is just to say thank you; these are people highly patient and experienced and they make time to share in our vision. They have gone through a life of disadvantage, and yet they are patient, which is incredible. I have a great deal of respect for senior citizens. “Their believe in peace and unity is inspiring,” the Mayor continued. “The root core of my strength is the wisdom I get from the elderly.” This year extra precaution was taken to guarantee that the elderly were as comfortable as possible. The lunch was held early before the festive season to accommodate those that may be travelling during the holidays, and the parcels will be directly brought to their house by council members, so that they do not have to carry the heavy packages long distances from the allocated bus stops. However, this unfortunately resulted in a miscommunication, and one of the councillors announced that the lunch was cancelled. Consequently, about 50 seniors missed out on the charity event.

Mini-Bus Driver Released on Bail of N$4 000 Siglinde de Villiers On Saturday late afternoon, a Quantum Mini-bus and Nissan Navara collided on the B2 Narraville turn-off, claiming the life of a much cherished and well-known Walvis Bay resident, leaving the coastal community shattered with his unexpected death. According to Inspector Iikuyu from Nampol, the Mini-bus had six passengers and one baby on board. The driver, Alex Kaffer Fridolin (56), was allegedly drunk and arrested on the scene. A spokesperson for St Gabriel’s Trust Emergency Services stated that they transported six passengers to the hospital, three with medium injuries and three with only scratches and bruises. “The passenger of the bakkie was unharmed,” Iikuyu stated. According to St Gabriel’s Trust, the driver, Diamantino (Junior) Correia (24), had to be extracted from the Navara with the Jaws of Life. Aubrey Oosthuizen from the West Coast Safety Initiative confirmed that Correia was flown to Windhoek in order to be stabilised. He was then supposed to be transported to Cape Town for Surgery. Sadly though, he passed away in Windhoek on Sunday afternoon. Fridolin was held in custody in the Walvis Bay Police cells and appeared in court on Monday afternoon on charges of negligent and reckless driving as well as culpable homicide. He was granted bail for N$4 000 and the case was postponed until 3 December 2013. - Daring Jackal Rescued Soldier Washed Ashore
Siglinde de Villiers On Monday afternoon, a lost jackal found itself running through town when it was rescued by two coastal residents from its inevitable plight. The jackal was caught and released far into the desert, hoping that it had learned the better of entering a township area.
“My daughter, who plays cricket, phoned me to tell me that there was a jackal at the cricket fields, which the children were throwing stones at,” Herman Meetlang said. “I then phoned the Nature Conservation, but by the time they got to the cricket field the jackal was gone." However, Herman says that it was spotted again by John Reinders in 6th Street. “We finally managed to catch the jackal by throwing towels over it and then phoned Peter Brooks from the SPCA to help us
load the animal into the back of the Nature Conservation bakkie,” Herman explained. He continued to say that John was bitten by the animal in the process. According to some bystanders, the animal was bleeding from the nose, however it did not seem to be seriously injured. Herman and John held the jackal down on the street, despite its numerous attempts to escape, until Brooks arrived with a control pole used by the Municipality for large aggressive dogs. The trio managed to move the animal safely into the back of the Nature Conservation bakkie without further incident. “The jackal was released far in the desert were it disappeared behind the dunes. It did not seem to be sick or injured and we hope that it will not come back,” Herman concluded.
Dorcas Mhungu On Sunday morning, a male corpse clad in army regalia was discovered after being washed ashore at Pelican Bay. He is thought to be one of the two South African Special Forces soldiers who went missing on 5 October during a seaborne war exercise. The Erongo police are now waiting for relatives of the two soldiers in question to positively identify the body. Namibia Defence Forces Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Monica Sheya also
said officials from the two governments (South Africa and Namibia) are busy with the identification process to determine which of the two missing soldiers was found before they can inform the families. The body washed up two days after the families visited the scene of the accident. Namibia Police Chief Inspector Erastus Iikuyu confirmed that the body of one of the missing soldiers was discovered and an inquest into the death of the soldier has been opened.
Iikuyu, however, said the police are waiting for the family to arrive from South Africa and positively identify the deceased. The family might arrive today. At last Friday’s media briefing, Brig. General Maphwanya said: “The families requested that we should respect their privacy. "They are in the period of accepting that the incident happened and they still need to come to terms with the legal imperatives in terms of the missing people at sea.”

Neglected Fire Victims Struggle to Find Help Lavrenty Repin Following the shocking fire on 21 October this year in Swakopmund the victims now fume over the alleged non-existent help from the municipality.
A single mother of two angrily remarked, “the municipality is doing nothing for us!” She lost everything, including her bed, stove, clothes and food in the fire that destroyed 27 homes and rendered over 50 people homeless. Three weeks on and the community is slowly rebuilding their lives and homes. However, the assistance from the public and the municipality has allegedly been next to nothing. Upon visiting the affected area, the Namib Independent learned that one house shares four mattresses between 16 people, while another house has only one mattress and one blanket for a family of three. Upon inspection of the municipal donated blankets, it was discovered that they were second-hand.
Furthermore, food handed out by the Municipality, which consists of items like 5kg of maize, 1kg of rice and one can of pilchard, was allegedly given out not to each individual separately, as the Municipal Agenda states, but per household. After the first donation on 22 October, there have been no further contributions from the Municipality. This month’s Agenda states that due to an increase in fire victims, some items have been depleted. It also says that “there are no blankets, chairs and mattresses available at the stores.” A recommendation to further donate pillows, duvets, single mattresses and chairs was carried out last week Thursday, but it is not clear when these items will reach the victims. Speaking to the Namib Independent, Mr David Ngihimbwasha, spokesperson for the DRC, said: “These people are very affected and need help from the Municipality.” David

Insightful Presentation on Pollution An “Eye-Opener” Lavrenty Repin On Wednesday, Prof Dr David G Senn gave a shocking presentation on the devastating effects plastic has on the marine eco-system. He studied palaeontology, zoology, and philosophy at the University of Basle. He worked as a diver in the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, Sudan, Egypt, Israel, Jordan and the Indo-Pacific Ocean, where he studied marine habitats and their fish. Prof Dr Senn fervently described the huge variety of animals and corals who suffer from three different types of plastic dangers: plastic that
sinks to the bottom of the ocean and affects deep-sea creatures, plastic that floats on the surface of the water and causes numerous damage to a large spectrum of marine animals and plastic that disintegrates into what is known as micro-plastic, which is a 100th of a millimetre in size, unseen to the naked eye. This micro-plastic creates the most damage, as it is unintentionally digested by all plankton-feeding marine animals, which include corals, crustaceans and whales. Prof Dr Senn showed graphic images, amongst others, of an Albatross seagull’s intestines, which illustrated that over the course of its life the

Prof Dr David G Senn seagull ingested over a hundred different plastic materials, including bottle caps and lipstick holders. He also showed unbelievable images of entire rivers in Japan and the Philippines covered in plastic
rubbish, obscuring the visibility of surface water. Plastic bottles have been found in abundance as far the Arctic circle and Prof Dr Senn spoke of the infamous Rubbish Island, which is
literally an island made entirely out of rubbish floating out in the pacific ocean, and which in 2006 covered the same area as Germany. This year it is four times the size of Germany and is increasing annually at between 100 000 and 200 000 square kilometres each year. It is one of five similar floating islands around the world, with another in the Atlantic Ocean poised to overtake it in size a few years from now. Certain plastic objects take up to 700 years to decompose, and the current production rate of plastic annually around the world peaks at 350 million tonnes, with a 100 million estimated to end up in our oceans yearly. Plastic in Namibia, Prof Dr Senn said, is not far behind, and it is evident in the ever present plastic refuse on our coastline and inland. Councillor Peter Steinkopff called on the community about the need to curb littering in Swakopmund after the presentation, and urged Swakopmunders to use reusable bags when shopping. Mr Clive Lawerence of Health Services said that the presentation was an eye-opener for the town of Swakopmund and pointed out that next year a recycling plant will be completed in the town to fully equip Swakopmund as a recycling centre. At the end of the presentation, Prof Dr David G Senn stated that he wanted to end his talk on a positive note, wowing the audience with interesting facts on whales. He said that the mother whale will feed her calf about 300 litres of milk a day, and the calf grows at a rate of two kilograms every hour. Blue whales are the largest known animals to ever exist on earth.

My Drive & I Car Collector Presents Vintage Cars Siglinde de Villiers Collecting cars since the late 70s, Jan Kruger has owned and restored several vintage cars through the years, with his current collection comprising a Chevrolet Biscayne and a Ford Cortina, to be paraded through town on Saturday. "My love for vintage cars started when I restored my first car in 1979. I had swopped my motorbike for a 1948 Ford Popular, and started to work on rebuilding it,” Kruger relates. “The Ford Popular is now being displayed in a museum in Port Elizabeth. "I then bought and restored my brother's 1969 Alfa Romeo 1750,” Kruger continues. The Alfa Romeo was followed by a 1960 Fiat 600 in the mid 1980s, which he bought from a farmer in the Northern Cape and eventually sold to a collector in Pretoria. According to Kruger, restoring vintage cars
is difficult, for one has to find and use original parts for the cars. “It takes a lot of research. Some parts I have to import from the USA and other parts I can obtain with the assistance of a vintage car specialist in South Africa." Currently, Kruger has two cars in his collection. “My current collection consists of a 1962 Chevrolet Biscayne 5.4L 327 and a 1968 Ford Cortina 1600 Super,” Kruger said. Where does Kruger find his cars? “It is strange but true, I do not look for the cars, they find me,” he said. Kruger added that he wishes to still add a 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air to his collection. Kruger says that each car in his collection has its own distinct personality. “The Chevrolet Biscayne and Ford Cortina both have a very long story and history. They would fill a book if I had to tell it,” Kruger explained.
Does Kruger drive the cars in his collection? “I rent out my cars and drive them mostly for matric balls, weddings or even simply a Sunday cruise if the weather permits,” he answered. However, this coming Saturday Kruger will present the Chevrolet Biscayne in the Rotary Vintage Car Show parade through the town of Swakopmund at 10h00. “I usually prepare my car the night before an event, so Friday night I will be busy with getting my car in tip top condition for the show.”

"Beemer's" New Electric i3
At the launch event for the BMW i3 I started pondering whether I should change my name to iEnglish. Don’t you think that makes me sound so much more modern? Or does the shameless hijacking of Apple’s product prefix look like a desperate attempt to get down with the kids? That does not seem to have occurred to BMW’s irony-free marketers, which is a shame because the engineers at the Munich motor works have put too much clever thinking (as well as a mooted £2 billion) into developing its new i3 electric car for it to be saddled with such a naff, plagiaristic name. Nevertheless the sense of occasion at the Amsterdam launch was palpable. This is a striking and intriguing car, but not a beautiful one. It sits high on skinny 19in Bridge stones, the narrowing side windows look ungainly and small, rear-hinged back doors like an afterthought. It is rear-wheel drive for a start, although that does not hugely affect the driving experience; a kerb weight of 1,270kg does; a pressed-steel i3 would weigh about 1,500kg. The rear-mounted driveline keeps heavy electric cables to a minimum, the suspension is forged aluminium, the driveshafts are hollow, the aluminium wheels are forged, the screws and bolts are aluminium and even the windscreen wiper is a honeycomb structure. The i3's 230kg, 22kWh lithium-ion battery sits under the floor, cooled by the car’s air-con and protected by stout chassis rails and honeycomb carbon fibre sills. The MacPherson-strut front and five-link rear suspension is bolted to aluminium subframes and the 168bhp, AC electric motor and drive axle are under the boot floor. Range is quoted at 140 miles in the EU Combined cycle, but realistically lies between 80 and 100 miles. Add a few thousand dollars to the basic purchase price and you get the range extender i3, with a 650cc rear-mounted motorcycle petrol engine that acts as a generator for the battery, and which pushes the range to a maximum of 186 miles on one (9-litre) tank of fuel. Over 80 per cent of UK buyers
are expected to buy this version. “But most customers will never use it,” whinges BMW, which misses the point entirely since, as the range extender is there to overcome range anxiety, it does the job whether it is used or not. The i3’s cabin is also different, but the rear-hinged rear doors are more contrivance than necessity. Everything feels a little too upright for a BMW, especially the seating position, but the front perches are comfy, the rears will (just) accommodate a couple of adults, and the fully open, flat floor is delightful. The trim is like an explosion at a remnants factory. There are four trim options (or 'interior worlds’) all featuring engineered wood, plastics, natural fibres and itchy door trims. The dashboard looks filched from Apple’s skunk works and the attractive satnav system shows a range perimeter based on topography, driving style, battery charge and traffic information. I have to say, though, that this car did not seem glued together with BMW’s normal obsessive attention to quality; there were gummy finger marks, smudgy release agent overspill and inconsistent shut lines. With some nifty right foot work, you can (almost) drive the i3 on the throttle alone and BMW claims its Mini guinea pigs love this. You quickly get used to one-pedal driving, but it’s easy to get caught out by a developing hazards requiring quick transfer to the friction brakes, which can lead to erratic progress. Back in the "go" department, the i3 isn’t lacking, and though it’s not as quick as a Tesla, or an i8, it fair scorches off the line and picks up well between 30 and 50mph. The top speed is limited to 93mph and the i3 pulls up there with eagerness barely undimmed, although the battery life takes a dive off the high board. One advantage of the rear motor/drive is that you leave the motor whine behind: the i3 is particularly quiet and refined, although the upright shape kicks up quite a lot of wind noise. Thanks partly to its light weight the i3 rides better than its rivals because the springs have less to support. It’s far from a magic carpet, however, with lots of road vibration through the tyres, annoying sideto-side pitching and body roll in corners,
despite the low centre of gravity. The steering uses the same rack as the forthcoming new Mini and it is light and precise, with some feedback. In urban areas the i3 feels nimble, agile and brisk - on faster roads less so, and there’s a feeling of isolation from the road.
BMW has certainly produced the best attempt at a pure EV hatchback yet, but it still doesn’t really replace the family car and against Nissan’s Leaf, the i3 looks like an expensive way to look environmentally right on. From: telegraph.co.uk

Steers and Debonairs Pizza Have Come to Town Dorcas Mhungu After a long wait, Walvis Bay residents can finally avail themselves of a delicatessen which has for long been at the forefront of South African and Namibian fast food cuisine, with the opening of a Steers and Debonairs Pizza in the city centre. Strategically located in Sam Nujoma, the outlet officially opened last Saturday. I write with special reference to the following staff: Ruben, Efraim & Simeon deserve credit for the professional way in which they always treat, serve and help me, Summie Smit - I love doing all my shopping with Food Lover's Swakopmund. I advise other outlets to come to Food Lover’s Swakopmund for special training. Really, all your staff is always so friendly. So sincere. So happy to see their ‘regular visitor’, Summie. When traveling to Windhoek every month, they would all tell me just ‘how much they have missed me and how happy they are to have me back in Swakop and at the store. The coffee shop is always my greatest coffee shop-experience and treat at the coast. There is no comparison in Swakopmund, Walvis Bay, Henties Bay – or even Usakos, Karibib or Omaruru. They always walk the extra mile for me. They always attend to my special requests, especially now that I am bound to wear tooth braces for the next two years. They see just how they can best help me with soft food.
Simeon (the world’s best sushi chef!!!) has always been so very kind and professional. Now even more so. He is always recommending something ‘soft’ and ‘easy to chew’. Furthermore, Simeon and his helpers will try to assist me like always, but in such a compassionate way now. They would even cut everything twice as small in order for me to be able to easily chew it. Simeon is a real angel. Simeon, Filemon and the sushi staff always welcome me with open arms, open hearts and such friendly, open faces and ‘smiling’ eyes. That goes for the grill staff, as well… today, I was blessed to really see just how sweet and kind Efraim and Manfred are. They are always friendly and happy to see me. But today they went out of their way to make me the finest ever, softest, most-medium-butperfectly prepared (South African food guru Francois Ferreira taught us at many food expos that pork should always be prepared medium – finish…) Schnitzel that I have had in all my life. With the smoothest mash! I was so blessed, because I could finally (for the first time in two weeks!) eat meat – lovely Food Lover’s pork! It was as though I was in heaven. Efraim and Manfred really prepared it so professional and with so much consideration and compassion as
to my immediate problem. They felt that chips would be too hard to chew on. They then organised lovely smooth mash for me. They even served me at the coffee shop. With so much patience. So much professionalism. Wow! The best grill chefs in the world! I don’t want to leave out anybody. The butchers are always very, very friendly. Very co-operative. Very patient. If we need marinated food, they prepare it whilst we wait (if nothing is any longer available). The people at the counters (all counters) are always angels. Happy to see me and truly friendly. The coffee shop-fruits-drinksdepartment is always kind and so full of smiles. They always make you sorry to leave… they are always the last people to greet you on your way out. They may be so busy, but they would always take the time to say ‘good bye’. Even the lady at the cigaretterecharge voucher counter. They change from time to time, but they are always friendly. The floor managers are always kind and professional and willing to go the extra mile for you. The ladies at the salad counter, the pizza-soup counter, and the bread-savoury-cakes-counter… are always so sweet (as sweet and good as the fine things they

prepare and serve.) They would always assist you – even if they were so very busy. I don’t want to and I cannot and I will not leave out any person at Swakopmund Food Lover’s… the staff (each and everyone) are true angels, who make you feel t home. Yes, I feel that I might easily (if I just had the time and money!) spend all my time and all my money at that shop only… I would love to come there everyday, but it is impossible! I would love to spend a whole morning, afternoon or evening there. But, it is not always possible. I love relaxing inside the shop and at the coffee shop. I always feel so stressfree and blessed when with my Food

Good Week of Golf Despite The Cold Wednesday 30 October Last Wednesday, 30 players took part in the Competition. Cold weather greeted the players in the early morning, but it got better as the day progressed. Outright winner for the nine-hole competition was Pikkie Champion on 22 points. Second place went to Bossie on 21 Points and Gert Olivier Jnr. came third on a count out on 20 points. Paul van der Westhuizen is still struggling to get back in form and took the wooden spoon with eight points. Saturday 2 November We had no sponsor for last Saturday and the Club stood in for the Individual Stableford competition. Again it was a bit cold in the morning, but the day turned out to be a great golfing day. Many players started the day with new handicaps and still we have some ridiculous handicaps going around, but that will also be sorted out in the days to come. Take note of our Handicapper’s new handicap. Gunter, with that handicap you are on the verge of losing your regular playing partners. Stop taking our money or call the bank if you have cash flow problems. Stefan Jacksch is also a player to watch. Thursday school, take note. The Springboks Tour The Springboks will start their Northern Hemisphere tour on Saturday when they take on totally rugby-mad Wales in Cardiff at the Millennium Stadium at 19h30. Wales has beaten the Springboks only once before in 1999 and drawn once, which is sometimes hard to fathom because of their rich tradition: they are one of only two nations in the world that has rugby as their official sport, the other being New Zealand. The Springboks have beaten them 24 times and believe it or not - they have also beaten the All Blacks once! Their biggest defeat came against the Springboks in 1998 when they were humbled 9613. Mike Phillips said in an interview that they will take much heart by being able to field ten players that beat the Aussies earlier and that he believes they can beat the Springboks. To have confidence is good but maybe he should leave the big talk to someone who can turn up for practice sober. He was recently fired from his French club after he turned up for practice as drunk as a sailor. Nevertheless, the Boks’ will feel confident with the return of players like Bakkies and Jacques Fourie, not to mention J.P. Peterson. I believe South Africa will be just too powerful in front and too clever and quick at the back for Wales. Expect them to play a kicking game. Omeya Open Three of our players took part in the Omeya Open over the weekend. The course was not fully operational and one Par 3 was not playable. Players competed over 34 holes on Saturday. Neil Theron played a 73 and a 75 to win the A Division Nett. Andre Burger played an 81 and bounced back with a 74 to win the B Division Nett. Kevin Wentzel played consistently over the weekend with a score of 78 and 78. Kevin, Andre beat you again on gross! Coming Saturday Namibia Fishmeal Processors stepped in to sponsor this weekend.
