Love was definitely in the air last Friday evening when the International School of Walvis Bay hosted their St. Valentine's Day Masked Ball at the Municipality grounds in Walvis Bay. The event was organised by local catering and events company Desert Catering, and a stunning night it was indeed. The tent was decorated to romantic perfection with twinkling lights and the tables were adorned with masks and ostrich feathers. Candles flickered amidst intimate seating areas where guests could relax with their partners and feel the love. Desert Catering treated guests to a three course meal, starting with an amazing broccoli and feta soup. The main course was a buffet and the feast was finished with a sweet apple crumble and custard. Guests danced throughout the evening to live music from Get 2. Another successful event from IsWB and Ms. esmay Campbell.

Animal Nightmare in Walvis Bay Lavrenty Repin Numerous complaints and photographs submitted to the Namib Independent indicate that animals at the local “Fernandes Petting Zoo” in Walvis Bay are being exposed to questionable conditions, overcrowding and unauthorised captivity and breeding. Several visitors to the petting zoo have contacted the Namib Independent in an effort to highlight what they express to be terrible conditions including severe overcrowding, fights between animals of different species, uncontrolled breeding and, most

recently, that there was a dead piglet being trampled on by other animals. The area in question, which is situated on the corner of 14th Road and Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue, is a 20 by 25 square metre walled-off space in which, on a usual day, sources say between 200 and 300 animals are kept, including goats, cows, pigs, rabbits, tortoises, chickens, ostriches and even pelicans. This claim was substantiated by a visit to the petting zoo by a reporter. Amongst other things the photos also indicate that Continued on Page 3

Fishtival Incites Great Hopes Siglinde de Villiers Destined to promote Walvis Bay on a local as well as international level, this year’s Fishtival is planned for 4 and 5 April at the Jan Wilken Stadium. It aims to provide a common platform for various stakeholders in the fishing industry to display and market their products and services. Chairman of the Confederation of the Namibian Fishing Association, Matti Amukwa, explained, “Each town has its own identity based on the economy around that town. For Luderitz it is crayfish, for Tsumeb it is copper and for Walvis Bay it is fish.” Uilika Nambahu, Mayor of Walvis Bay, announced on Wednesday that fish is the prominent feature of this festival, for it is the main economic pillar for Walvis Bay and forms the backbone of the fishing industry. “While marine resources are being destroyed in many parts of the world, we want to celebrate the fact that our resources have been well managed and protected. This places us in the best position to prove that natural resources can be harvested in a sustainable manner,” Nambahu

declared. According to Amukwa, the Fishtival will create opportunities for client and producer to meet and reach agreements. Gert Kruger, Chairperson of the Organising Committee, said that they want to support and develop small enterprises. “We hope that as many small industry players as possible take part and contribute,” he mentioned. The Organising Committee has divided the indoor sports centrum at the Jan Wilken Stadium into fiftyfour stalls where stakeholders can exhibit products or services related to the fishing industry. have been allocated to the rugby field to serve delicious seafood. Other components of the festival will include live entertainment and activities for children. The Fishtival will be spread all around town, including a rugby match in Narraville and a soccer tournament in Kuisebmond. Adelheid Kandjala, Special Advisor to the Governor, said: “Our people need to unite, rejoice and celebrate, expressing our gratitude for the resources God granted us. For two days we will not cook at home, but only eat fish at the festival.” For those with seafood allergies, provisions have been made to supply a minimal amount of meat and chicken. “To organise such a festival requires great effort and teamwork to be successful,” Amukwa stated. “We are thankful for all help and funds received.” The Mayor concluded by saying that the Fisthival shows enormous potential for growth. Enquiries about stalls at the Fishtival can be directed to Vanessa Erasmus at the Municipality.

Penguins, Pigs and Pelicans Continued from Page 1 tortoises are piling up on top of each other in stark conditions, and that all manner of species simply share the same small, barren site. One image also clearly depicts an adult pelican that has had its wings clipped and it, too, was simply left in amongst farm animals. Sandra Dantu, who runs the Sea Bird Rehabilitation Centre, explained that last year April she received a penguin, which was allegedly confiscated from the petting zoo. “It was brought in by the vet. The doctor (name withheld) brought it to us for rehabilitation, explaining that he had confiscated the bird from the same location, since the owners couldn’t provide a permit. The penguin was covered in oil, most likely from the harbour, and underweight - it was successfully released into the wild a month later.” Sandra confirmed that the wings of the pelican in the picture were clipped and also pointed out that the zoo has an Egyptian Goose – which is a protected species. “I think it’s reprehensible,” Sandra said in regards to the photographs. Liz Komen, who described the animal living conditions as shocking, runs the Namibia Animal Rehabilitation Research and Education Centre (NARREC). She explained that strict regulations need to be adhered to when keeping tortoises, including only ten animals in one area, no mixed sexes (to avoid any breeding) and sufficient space for each animal. “They are piling because there is no proper housing space, or maybe dominant males are [attacking them)] or they are all pushing to escape most likely they are all hungry,” she reckoned. She said that the Walvis Bay area can carry high parasite loads, and tortoises can carry salmonella if they are in poor living spaces. This opinion was also echoed by Ministry of Environment ranger, Wensel Mavara, who explained that each tortoise must have an individual permit and their living space is subject to inspection. They must be kept separate from other animals, and their habitat needs to be as similar to wild conditions as possible for the permit to be approved. “The person must have a permit, if he or she doesn’t, then we will fine the person and release the animal back in to the park,” he stated. “The same goes for any other wild animal, including ostriches.” The overwhelming number of livestock, including breeding pigs, was also put under question when the Namib Independent spoke to State Veterinarian, Dr Kaseke. He explained that livestock is only allowed to be kept in residential areas if it is en route for slaughtering. Exceptions could be made for traditional weddings, but the animals would only be allowed to remain in urban areas for no more than two days. However, the town’s municipality is in a position to grant special permission. After numerous attempts to establish whether there is any agreement between the municipality and the petting zoo, the municipality elected to be elusive. Kevin Adams, PR Officer, confirmed that an application has been submitted for a business rezoning of the area and for town planning. According to a letter from the municipality, the “petting zoo” is allowed to operate while the application is being reviewed. “They [the town planners] do realise that it’s been dragging for a

while and it needs to be resolved,” Adams stated. Over the course of four days, the municipality continually failed to provide the most basic answers in terms of regulations, specifications, health inspections or any rudimentary information relating to the types of animals and the quantity that one would expect in a petting zoo. Furthermore they chose not to provide a legitimate reason for why the zoo continues to operate without as much as an approved town planning application or any governance in terms of the health and wellbeing of the animals or the safety of visitors. According to one owner of the petting zoo, Mrs Manuela Fernandes, it has been operational for the past three years. In the light of these allegations, Mrs Fernandes paints a different picture. “We have a passion for animals, we love them with all our hearts,” she explained. “We’re not breeding, selling or doing anything with them; we’re just taking care of them.” She says that people drop off animals, including tortoises. “Must I turn my back on them? Would people rather have neglected animals on the street?” Mrs Fernandes asked. “We’re doing it for everybody, a lot of businessmen and Municipal people come to sit during the day and watch the animals, we’re even planning on connecting Wi-Fi for them.” She also confirmed that they charge a N$2 000 fee and N$500 deposit for birthday parties, but explained that it goes towards covering the cost of the waterslide and generator on the premises and said that they invite schools free of charge - showing some of the positive letters they have received from the students. The Namib Independent visited the premises in question with Mrs Fernandes and noted that there were significantly less animals on the farm than in the pictures, which were taken earlier in the week. Fernandes denied the reports of a clipped pelican and dead piglet, saying that the pelicans they had were able to fly away and that there were no reports of dead animals from the foreman - suggesting that the pig might have been sleeping, although the pictures portray a different story. She also categorically denied that any of the livestock is slaughtered, saying that she received the cow(s) as a gift, and that they have about 40 animals, as opposed to the alleged 300. “We have the best intentions at heart; people drop off their animals and we cannot say no,” she insisted. She was also not able to provide the relevant permits for the protected animals on the site, which include tortoises, pelicans, Egyptian geese and ostriches. Peter Brooks, who runs the Walvis Bay SPCA, told the Namib Independent that if anyone finds or receives an abandoned animal, they

Deceased pig need to bring it in to the SPCA or the relevant authorities. He took note of the various complaints and pointed out that a number of animals looked undernourished. “In my opinion, looking from these photos, I’d say there are at least five goats underweight,” he said, admitting that he would need physical confirmation. He said that cross-contamination between animals is a concern in these kind of environments. Mr Martin Wiese, owner and founder of “Haven Petting Zoo” in Windhoek explained that petting zoos are subject to a lot of legislation. “It took me seven years before the Windhoek Municipality gave permission to open the zoo. We work very closely with Nature Conservation and the Municipality – they perform monthly inspections to ensure that the animals are kept in good conditions.” He further explained that their animals do not breed, as they ensure that all are castrated. The 5ha petting zoo, which is located in the Kleine Windhoek suburb, houses wild and domestic animals. However, they are kept in separate locations. “What we do with our cows, for example, is, we keep the babies until they become a little bigger and then we send them to the farm, where they have more space.” Mr Wiese also confirmed that many people drop animals off, and that it is a problem, but he cannot keep them without first establishing the origin and getting permission from relevant authorities, thus all his ostriches are tagged with microchips. “I went through all the rules and regulations before opening my zoo and other people just do whatever they want,” Mr Wiese concluded. Editor's note: The Namib Independent would like to highlight that it is wholly in favour of a petting zoo for Walvis Bay. The benefits

of one are phenomenal for the community and for the education of our children and we commend anyone that undertakes such a noble and difficult endeavour, especially on their own accord and cost. We have been at pains for some while, regarding the continued reports to us on this matter and have taken the reporting of the same under grave consideration. We sincerely hope that the petting zoo owners, the local authority and any local experts can get together in cooperation to ensure this great idea receives the professional attention and approach that it deserves. I, for one, would be honoured to volunteer my help.

Copper Theft Suspect Still Missing Siglinde de Villiers The disappearance of a N$2.5 million dollar copper consignment supposed to reach Namport is under full investigation. With thirty tons of copper still missing and the prime suspect nowhere to be found, Nampol appeals to the assistance of the public. The copper blocks were stolen while in transit form the mining town of Kitwe in Zambia to Walvis Bay harbour. A Van Der Walt transport confirmed that the copper was loaded onto a trailer. According to an industry insider, a copper block weighs about 1.2 tonne on average; no easy task for thieves to offload and hide. The driver responsible for the load, Wilbard Malapi, did not return to work and his whereabouts are still unknown. “The general practice is to offload copper blocks at an agent’s warehouse who will pack it into containers for shipping by Namport,” Liz Sibindi, Communications Manager for Namport, explained.

“However, in this case, the agent responsible to receive the copper blocks was renting space inside the harbour, from where the copper would have been packed into a container, and eventually handed over to Namport,” she explains. According to Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, no arrests have been made yet and Nampol appeals to the public in assisting them with the whereabouts of Wilbard Malapi. Any person with information regarding the driver can contact their nearest police station.

The Walvis Bay Town Council’s initiative to develop more urban areas by servicing the land and constructing roads is well underway. Last year the Walvis Bay Municipality announced at the ground-breaking ceremony that, as part of their five-year strategic plan, they will make more erven available, as well as develop infrastructure in Walvis Bay. At the same ceremony council declared that they have budgeted to have about 2 000 erven serviced by the next financial year. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Uilika Nambahu, stated that, “Altogether this represents about N$115 million of investment in our land development programme. As we have indicated in our strategic plan, we are optimistic that the total of 2 000 serviced erven by both the municipality and private developers for the current financial year can be met. “As an aside, I should also emphasise that all new developments will have tarred roads and paved sidewalks.” The areas to developed are Narraville Ext 7 with 220 erven, Kuisebmond Ext 5 and 6 with 430 erven; Meersig Extension 2 with 250 erven and Walvis Bay Ext 14. According to the Municipal Public Relations Manager, Kevin Adams, the project in Meersig is running on schedule and is expected to be completed by this year November. The Narraville extension is expected to be done by July and Kuisebmond by October. Adams said that they can only estimate the prices of the erven once the servicing has been done. “Once the servicing, roads, pavements and erf boundaries have been completed we will be able to put the erven up for auction and / or put it out on a tender and whatever land is left over will be sold in a private treaty,” Adams explained. The development tender was awarded to JJD Earthmoving and Construction who are currently hard at work to meet the deadlines.

NAMA Awards to Be

Hosted In Swakop Tanya Calitz For the first time ever the biggest music event in Namibia will be hosted at the coast in Swakopmund this May. MTC made the news public at a press conference held in Windhoek earlier this week. According to MTC’s Corporate Communications person, John Ekongo, management have decided to host the event in a different town this year, so that other communities can also benefit from the event. “This is reflective of some of the core objectives of the NAMA platform. As Namibia's biggest night in music and the only major and all inclusive marketing and showcase platform, for the best of Namibian music and for communities from all corners of our beautiful country, we are creating opportunities for this momentous annual event to also be hosted in other corners of Namibia,” said Ekongo. The awards ceremony will be taking place over the long weekend on 2 and 3 May in the Swakopmund

Indoor Sports Centre. According to Ekongo, the organisers are working on getting sponsored transport services for people between Windhoek and Swakopmund, as well as special pricing for accommodation upon presenting a valid Nama Awards ticket. Ekongo has encouraged people from all over Erongo to take part in this years’ award ceremony. Tickets go on sale from 25 February at Compu-Ticket at N$500 for a VIP ticket and standard tickets for N$250. Exit, who is yet to win a Nama Award, is hoping for the tides to change this year, following the release of his widely acclaimed 2014 album, ‘Go Hard or Go Home’. At a public meeting held by MTC in Swakopmund, the local music community spoke out against the lack of representation of coastal artists in the NAMA awards. Coastal fans are optimistic that by hosting the award ceremony in Swakopmund, local artists will be nominated, as well as being given the opportunity to perform and showcase their talents to the rest of the nation.

Happy Ending for Stranded Whale Lavrenty Repin The Namibian Dolphin Project (NDP), in conjunction with Walvis Bay Strandings Network, fishermen and several volunteers were able to successfully rescue a stranded Antarctic Minke whale, that stranded near the Walvis Bay Pump station jetty last Saturday, 15 February. The juvenile, five metres long, weighed between one and two tonnes. It was discovered on Saturday morning by fishermen who kept the whale cool by pouring water over it. Soon members of NDP arrived to coordinate a rescue attempt. Using a stretcher, multiple efforts were made to return the whale to deeper water as the high tide came in. Although NDP successfully released the animal, it was found ashore again a mere 500 meters north of the jetty. Returning with additional resources, the NDP again managed to get the whale back into the water. A NDP member detailed, “By

VACANCY: THE NAMIB INDEPENDENT IS LOOKING FOR A YOUNG ADVERTISING SALES WOMAN (junior position) Have you got an outgoing personality and would like to get into the media? Have you a track record of at least two years of selling products and services to the business community?

holding the animal in the stretcher and moving it gently out to sea with the boat, the team managed to get the whale out into deeper waters near the middle of the bay before the whale slipped off the stretcher and swam off.” NDP remain hopeful that the whale has successfully found its way back to open waters, since there were no reports of another stranding by Thursday. NDP confirmed that this is the fourth record of a stranded Minke whale

in central Namibia and that it appeared healthy with no obvious injuries. NDP explained, “The southwest corner of Walvis Bay near the pump station is a hot spot for strandings due to the shape of the bay (it blocks any direct route out of the bay), multiple channels, which could confuse a navigating whale, and the shallow slope of the sea floor which makes the tide go out very fast.”

Do you love dealing with people and hate sitting in an office? If so we would like to hear from you. Must live in Walvis Bay and be ready to start immediately.

To apply today email your CV to info@namibindependent.com.na Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.

Svendborg Maersk Loses Near-Record Number of Containers Earlier this week Maersk lost some of its containers due to bad weather out at sea. The number of lost containers is much higher than initially thought. 520 Containers went overboard due to rough weather condition in the Bay of Biscay. Survey of the cargo determined the overwhelming number of containers lost overboard as the damaged container carrier Svendborg Maersk docked in Malaga, Spain. The Vice President of Maersk Line Operations, Palle Laursen, stated, "The actual number of containers lost at sea is much greater than we all feared. Our container ship experienced extremely rough weather and we are carefully going to review our procedures to examine whether they need to be corrected in order to avoid similar accidents."

The good news for Maersk Line is that around 85% of the lost 520 containers overboard were empty, which is significantly going to reduce the potential cargo claims number. Moreover, as VP Laursen said, there were no containers containing hazardous cargo. Source: http://www.vesselfinder.com/

Candidate groups of 20-40 applicants will be separated by region and these groups will be compete in tasks and challenges that simulate life on Mars. The potential astronauts will need to demonstrate the ability to work together and adapt to conditions on an alien world. The final round will feature groups of four candidates that will face new challenges and training in a Mars One outpost. Six groups of four will become employed Mars One astronauts. “We expect to begin understanding what is motivating our candidates to take this giant leap for humankind. This is where it really gets exciting for Mars One, our applicants, and the communities they’re a part of,” Norbert Kraft, chief medical officer of Mars One, said.

A restaurant in the Nigerian state of Anambra has been shut down after the authorities reportedly found it has been selling dishes made of human meat. The police recovered at least two fresh human heads when they arrested eleven people from the restaurant including the owner, six women and four men, following a tip-off. The blood-soaked heads were found wrapped in cellophane sheets. Officials have also seized two AK47 rifles, other weapons, dozens of rounds of ammunitions and several mobile phones during the raid. "Each time I came to the market, because the hotel is very close to the market, I always noticed funny movements in and out of the hotel; dirty people with dirty characters always come into the hotel. So, I was not surprised when the police made this discovery in the early hours of yesterday," a local resident told the

Osun Defender. A pastor, who was shocked to know that what he had eaten was human meat, complained to the police.

I did not know it was human meat that I ate at such expensive price.

Mars One, a non-profit foundation which aims to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars by 2025, announced towards the end of 2013 that it had short-listed 1,058 potential candidates for the job. The applicant pool was culled from over 200,000, with candidates from 107 countries making it into the second round of the selection process. According to the Mars One website, crew training is set to begin in 2015, followed by a number of unmanned missions until the first crew of four departs in 2024. A team of four crew members will then depart every two years. The 1,058 selected candidates will be notified by email, notes Mars One. Ages of candidates ranged from under 25 to over 56 years. Cut-off point had been set at 81 years of age. In terms of nationality, 107 countries were represented in the candidate pool. The United States had the most candidates, 297, followed by Canada (75), India (62), Russia (52), Australia (43), China (40) and Great Britain (40). Per region, North and South America had 458 candidates, Europe had 282 candidates, Asia had 218 candidates, Africa had 54 candidates and Oceania had 46 candidates. The majority of candidates were employed, while 164 candidates were still in school and 81 candidates were unemployed. Of the 107 nationalities represented, South Africa ranks ninth, with 25 candidates (20 male, 5 female) going through to Round 2. Across the whole continent, 54 candidates (42 male, 12 female) made it through to the next round of selections. Details of the 2014 selection phases have not been released yet, with Mars One saying in a press statement that negotiations with media companies for the rights to televise the selection processes were still ongoing. While there will be plenty of time to celebrate, there are several rounds left in the selection process. Round 2 will consist of a medical assessment by a doctor followed by

Open letter to Prime Minister Hage Geingob children of this country is a matter of national security. They are being raped and murdered and our laws are failing us. We are still protecting the criminal's rights and neglecting those of the victims.

I am now for the first time openly challenging my leadership.

Dear Cde Geingob This is my first official request in writing. Even though I admire you and we have sat in your house talking about politics, business cards and tractors, I will not change my stance on this public stand. What is happening to the women and

SWAPO…. I am now for the first time openly challenging my leadership and telling them that they are FAILING US!!! I joined this party whose leaders fought for the rights of the people....not a party who sits by and does nothing as its daughters are raped and murdered. Must we wait for a leader's mother, wife or daughter to be raped or murdered before you take action????? Stop propaganda sales of free land and better employment every

time elections come around. Stop building government buildings with chinese labour while our people are left without work. Focus on the basic needs of the nation. Safety being one of them. Today I am applying the right YOU fought for and am announcing that you ARE NOT doing the job you are elected to do. Your first order of business every day should be the well being of Namibia’s children. If this basic yet stern and fair request is not taken notice of, my next step will be preparing an official stike for all women in all sectors. I will make use of all my corporate, charity, international and media connections to make this the biggest national stike Namibia has ever seen. This need not be the solution to what should be a first priority for leadership Kind regards from a concerned Swapo supporter. with Hage Geingob and Elijah Ngurare Manongo.

Valentines Day Ball Photos by Sharmine Livingstone Love was definitely in the air last Friday evening when the International School of Walvis Bay hosted their St.

Production of the Mercedes-Benz GLA compact SUV - first seen at the Frankfurt motor show in September and introduced to South African Mercedes fans at the Jonhannesburg International Motor show a month later - has begun at the A-Class assembly plant in Rastatt, Germany. It's actually the fourth in a series of five new compact models that will be built at Rastatt and, because it shares almost 70 percent of its components with the new A-Class, it can be built on the same assembly line without disturbing A-Class production, which is already working three shifts to meet the demand. COMBINING SEGMENTS Daimler boss Dieter Zetsche said: "There is a very strong demand from our customers for SUVs and compact vehicles; the GLA allows us to combine these two segments and appeal to new customers. "For deserts, mud and steep hills, we have the true mountain boots of off-road vehicles in the Unimog and the G-Class," he explained. "Then we have the equipment for all sorts of outdoor activities in the GL, ML and GLK. And now, we are expanding that line-up with the new GLA the trekking shoe in the Mercedes line-up." LOCAL MOTION The GLA will be released in South Africa in April 2014, initially with the diesel variants, with petrol models to follow towards the end of the year. Mercedes-Benz South Africa Marketing Manager Selvin Govender said: "We received numerous enquiries from potential customers after our GLA premiere at the Joburg motor show, so we've opened the order book already at all Mercedes dealers in Southern Africa. "Customers can also specify their GLA with various options and packages using our digital online vehicle configurator - and then forward their selected specifications to their local dealer, with a click of the mouse."
