Reports on the sequence of events that led to the razing of between 23 and 30 shacks in Kuisebmond on Wednesday evening are somewhat contradictory in nature as expressed officially and by eye witnesses.
Local residents caught up in the disaster insist that the fire brigade took far too long to get to the blaze and when they did arrive, the engine that they were using was insufficient and that it ran out of water very quickly, resulting in it having to be refilled. “It felt like at least an hour and a half
or two hours before the fire brigade got here. G4S is always so quick to get to get to fires. Maybe they should just take over the fire fighting”, said Selma Mulika, a resident in the area. This was a sentiment that was repeated time and again. According to Dennis Basson of the

Walvis Bay Municipal Fire Brigade though, the brigade was on the scene within minutes of receiving a call out. “We only received a call at 8:48pm and sent a truck to the scene immediately. Within 5 minutes we sent out another 3 trucks,” said Basson. This account is in line with G4S’

Shack Fire! Residents Outraged with Response Time Continued from Page 1
on fire, but the fire brigade was starting to get it under control. According to Basson, it took the brigade two hours to extinguish the fire entirely. He did say, however, that they really struggled to get to the actual fire to do their business on account of the many onlookers and also civilian cars that were on the scene.
Basson stressed, “We do not get any payment for residential fires. We do not send a bill to residents after a fire is put out by us.” “The fire brigade came, but they were very late. They are forever late. They came after the last ghetto and house was already on fire,” claimed Amukoshi Junias, a local
resident. All of the shack dwellers lost all of their possessions. “All of us rushed to save our stuff but because the fire was so close, we could only salvage some of our documents such as ID’s, birth certificates, bank documents, voting cards, etc. So many people never even got to save these. We have
lost everything,” said Jonas Gabriel. There is also a discrepancy as to the number of shacks that was burnt down. The official figure released by the fire brigade was 23, while local residents report that 30 shacks that were burnt to the ground and that a house was very badly ravaged by the fire.
In-depth Look at the Municipal Budget - Part 1 the amount was estimated at N$239.2 million for the financial year of 2012/2013. “On the operational side, it was extremely difficult to balance the Budget. For the past two to three years, a moratorium was placed on creating and filling of vacant positions. However, the rapid expansion of the town through new extensions and new buildings caught up on us and forced us to expand our workforce significantly,” said the Chairperson of the Management Committee, Councillor Immanuel Wilfred. Wilfred also said that there has been a big spike in tariffs from bulk suppliers. “Tariff increases from our bulk suppliers such as NamWater and Erongo RED have been indicated to be way above the inflation rate. Although we tried our utmost best to keep tariffs as low as possible, we are forced to announce higher than normal tariff increases for the current financial year,” said Wilfred. The water supply services will increase by 11%, property rates and taxes by 8%, refuse removal services by 15% and sanitation services also by 15%. “Tariff adjustments for other services will be made available to the public at our offices and through the media once gazetted. Even with these increases, we are still left with a shortfall of N$69,978, which will be financed from unappropriated surplus funds of previous periods,” Wilfred explained. The following major projects have been provided for on the new capital budget: New Cemetery in Kuisebmond – N$1,000 000 According to Haingura the existing cemetery is reaching its maximum capacity, so to ensure that there is another cemetery available when the existing one is full they have made provision for it in the budget. “We still have to identify a piece of land, and once we have established a new site with the input of the community in Kuisebmond, we will then stabilise the ground and put up boundary walls.” Beautification of the Town – N$1,000 000 “No specific area has been pointed out as yet, but we have to make provision for this, because there is always an area the municipality can make nicer, for instance making green islands, or planting palm trees, and planting grass in public areas.” Industrial stalls in Kuisebmond – N$1,300 000 “This amount was basically carried over from last year’s budget. Kuiseb has a lot of hawkers and we want to discourage the mushrooming of these hawkers in some specific areas in Kuiseb, so we allocated a piece of land where these stalls for the hawkers will be built. The area allocated is on a piece of land at the back of Kuiseb, at the back of the road that leads to Independence Beach. We have already spent a small amount on the development for the stalls, but did not manage

to complete it and simply carried over the funds to continue with it in this financial year.” Upgrade existing and build new tourism facilities at Dolphin Beach – N$9,867 000 “The plan is to re-locate the Caravan Park and campsite at Langstrand to Dolphin Park. The reason for this is to have all the tourism facilities concentrated at Dolphin Park. We will also add more recreational facilities and green parks at Dolphin Beach, as well as braaing facilities for the community and tourists. We will also add toilet amenities.” Upgrade Stadium in Kuiseb (Phase 2) – N$3,499 992 “Last year we also made provision for this project, and budgeted it at N$1,296 000. Phase 1 was successfully completed. Phase 2 consists of finishing the upgrading of the stadium, as well as building a VIP stand at the stadium.” Youth Centre Kuisebmond – N$4,000 000 “The whole amount was carried over from last year’s budget for the upgrading of the Kuisebmond Youth Centre. The reason for this is the fact that the Youth centre does not belong to local council, but to the Ministry of Youth and Sports. So we do not have the mandate of the centre to operate as we please. We approached the Ministry a few years back and said that we would like to work with them in uplifting the youth in Kuisebmond, as well as provide the youth with a place where they can do activities to keep them off the streets. The Ministry was very eager to take on the project and said that they'd give one dollar for every dollar we give. Thus far we have not heard a word from them again, nor seen a cent. Once they come to the table we can continue with this project,” Haingura explained. Resealing and Tarring of Streets and Sidewalks – N$13,400 000 “This is also an ongoing annual maintenance project. The town is always in need of maintenance and the upgrading of our roads and sidewalks.” Divert the Northern Industrial Sewer to Kuiseb Ext 3 – N$1,200 000 “The plan is to divert the Northern Industrial (Fruit & Veg vicinity) sewerage line to the Central Sewer Pump Station in the Kuisebmond Ext 3 area. The new Sewerage Pump Station is that building on your left-hand side as you leave Walvis Bay, passing the bridge on your way to Swakopmund. Currently all the sewage is going to the Sewage Plant at the Municipal Landfill site. If we do not divert the sewer line the pressure will become too much and we will eventually have an overflow of sewage.” Fencing the Landfill Site – N$2,000 000 “We will be putting a fence around the whole dumpsite area, in order to have more control over

By putting up a fence there we will be able to better regulate the influx of people to and from the site.” Garages for New Vehicles N$1,000 000 “We are going to build a few garages at the Department of Waterworks, so that our staff members can have a protected area to park their cars. This will prolong the life of the vehicles.” Narraville Community Hall – N$8,500 000 Former Mayor, Mr Derek Klazen, was very pleased about this project and applauded it as council announced it at the annual Budget meeting last week at the Municipal Chambers. “Each year we like to take on a community project, to uplift the area and its residents. The community have asked for this for years now and we see it as our social responsibility, so finally this year we were able to make provision for this,” Haingura explained. New Trucks – N$7,950 000
“This amount budgets for a combination of municipal vehicles. We will be purchasing a new Grader to flatten roads with, a new Water Truck, a new Street Sweeping Machine Vehicle, two new Compactors as well as a new Tipper Truck.” Land Development Projects – N$120,015 000 “This is by far our biggest project and our aim is to have an additional 1500 serviced erven created by September 2014. Servicing of land or erven consists of connecting it to the sewage system, leading water to the erf, connecting the electricity supply and the tarring of roads to the new residential area. We will be servicing Extensions 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 in the Kuisebmond vicinity. We will also work on areas in Meersig, Ext 1, phase two, Walvis Bay Ext 14, as well as Narraville Ext 7 and 8. We will also invest in an Aquaculture site and focus on oyster farming and Abalone Fishing. These farms and on-land fish ponds will be developed close to the Bird Island outside of Walvis Bay.
The Narraville extension will basically be a whole new neighbourhood, fully serviced with a play park and green area for the children. We will also construct Greenbelt areas. This is where we plant reeds, palms and other greenery in order to form a protective layer surrounding neighbourhoods, blocking sand from the desert during sand storms. Another project we will be taking on is to improve our Bulk Water Supply. NamWater is only responsible for the pipelines up until a certain point and then it becomes the municipality’s responsibility. We will be servicing the existing pipelines and add more water bulk supply pumps to the new areas and Langstrand,” Haingura explained. This then brings a close to Part One, of the Municipal Budget Review. Abortion Tablets Readily Available on the Coast Tanya Calitz
This week a few community members expressed their concerns over the availability of abortion tablets on the coast. This is not a new phenomenon, but certainly one of an illegal drug in Namibia. According to *Sally (pseudo name) she fell pregnant a few months back and could not afford to have a child at her age. “I do not have the financial or moral support needed to have a baby. I was desperate and spoke to a few of my friends about it,” Sally said. According to Sally one of her friends told her that they knew a lady in Kuisebmond who sold abortion tablets. “At first I was a bit weary, but desperate enough to meet with her,” she said. Sally then bought the tablets from the lady for N$ 900, who also told her how to use them. “I had to swallow a few of the small white tablets, followed by inserting a few more into my vagina 12 hours later,” Sally explained. According to BPAS, a Pregnancy Advisory Service, the abortion pill is a medicine that ends a pregnancy. The medical name for the abortion pill is mifepristone. It works by blocking the hormone progesterone and without progesterone the lining of the uterus breaks down and the pregnancy cannot continue. The abortion pill is followed by another drug called misoprostol, which makes the womb contract, causing cramping and bleeding similar to a miscarriage. It can feel like having a heavy and more painful period. First the abortion pill
(mifepristone) is swallowed, followed by misoprostol tablets which are inserted into the vagina either by the woman herself or by the healthcare professional. The abortion pills are normally only used in the first three months of pregnancy, before it starts causing too many complications and health risks. “After using the tablet as it was explained to me I started feeling very ill. I was bleeding so much it scared me. I also experienced unbearable pain. I ended up in hospital, but did not tell the doctors what I did, because I was too scared. They thought I was just having a miscarriage,” Sally explained. Sally did not want to reveal who she got the tablets from, but it has been alleged that these tablets are made available by some people within the medical field on the coast. The Namib Independent also came across
an online classified offering Namibians the abortion tablets. The classified was uploaded on 24 April 2013. Security Firm Puzzled as Burglars Make Away with N$17 000 Staff Reporter
Management and staff of Angula Clearing Agency, together with members of G4S, were left perplexed after burglars seemingly waltzed into an alarmed building on Tuesday night, stole N$17 000 in cash and simply stepped right back out of the building without triggering one of the many alarms on the premises. According to a G4S member, the robbers broke a window and proceeded to dismantle the burglar bars using a bolt cutter to get into the premises. While this in itself is not remarkable, G4S members stated that the alarm was definitely on and that the window through which the perpetrator(s) gained entry was right opposite a motion sensor eye. In a conversation with Michael Koen of G4S Technical Department, the Namib Independent learnt that this is not the first time such an event has taken place recently. There have been another two such incidents over the last few weeks. Koen stated that according to their systems the alarm was on all night, and still was )on when they entered the building the next morning. “We did tests at the window and each time the eye picked up the motion and went off. In the past they used to bypass the system by going into the roof and cutting the wires, but now, we are not sure what they are doing. We have been onto our suppliers to have everything checked and tested. If the robbers have found another way to get around the systems, we take it very seriously and are doing all we can to figure it out. We are working on it,” stated Koen. Calls to other security firms to find out
if they had recently experienced similar incidents confirmed that they had not. However, one firm said that while they had not specifically experienced such a break-in it was entirely viable that such an incident take place. Cameron Muller from Erongo Axis Security also confirmed that the perpetrators were always finding new ways to get around systems. On the incident in question, Muller did indicate that there is a means by which this can happen. “Sometimes an alarm is set with the remote or button and goes into a ‘stay alarmed’ mode. In such a case it will seem like the alarm is on for both the customer and the alarm company, but some areas in the business may be unarmed. It does not alarm all zones,” said Muller. Asked if that does not imply an inside job, as how would any would-be burglar be cognisant of which rooms or zones were not alarmed, Muller stated that, yes, in instances like this it could well be an inside job, but with no particular information on the incident at Angula he could not comment for certain. Koen also noted that extra measures such as thermal detectors are available. “We do have the option of both motion and thermal detectors, which also pick up any changes to room temperature, but most people do not opt for these as they are more expensive,” he explained. In addition to the N$17 000, staff members at Angula Clearing Agency confirmed that the thieves also managed to heist two laptop computers and a charger as well as a cheque book. Incidentally, N$2500 of the cash was lifted from the petty cash box but left on the scene.

Namib Independent Soccer 7-A-Side Tournament Kicks Off
Staff Reporter The Atlantis Club in Walvis Bay will play host to the very first Namib Independent sevena-side corporate tournament this Saturday. With 17 companies taking part, the all-day tournament promises to be action packed. According to Christopher Willem, Marketing and Business Development Officer at the Namib Independent, the event has been made possible through the co-sponsorship of four companies in the coastal town, namely Supatronix, Namib Offroad Centre, Namibia Ship Chandlers and Build It Walvis Bay. “Without these companies showing their commitment to sports and to the community, events like these would not be possible. As of going to press the tournament has attracted 17 company teams made up of about 200 individual participants. The response has been overwhelming to say the least. Together with family and friends we may have attendance figures as high as 500,” said Willem. The tournament is free to watch and will start at 9a.m. It has been specifically designed to be a good family day out. Bouncy Castles and other entertainment for the kids shall be on show and food and drinks will also be available all day. Participating companies are Sea Pride, Standard Bank, Namib Diesel 1 and Namib Diesel 2, Nedbank, Logistic Support Services, EBH 1 and EBH 2, First National Bank, Tunacor, Manica, Namib Independent, Namib Ship Chandlers, Trade Ocean Shipping, Fuad Fresh Produce and Namport. “We are looking forward to seeing everyone there!” said Willem.

Car Dealer Pulls the Curtain on Natis
After last week's report about Natis failing car dealers brakes, a local car dealer elaborated more on the issue regarding the new brake testing machine and its operators. A local car dealer spoke to the Namib Independent after reading last week's issue about Natis allegedly failing brakes one after the other, stating that he has a lot more to say regarding this issue. “Car's brakes are failed because the person operating the machine is not qualified to do so and the machine has not been correctly installed. Also, the information entered into the machine is wrong. For example, MP200 was tested as a Sedan motor vehicle. A BMW X5 does not even weigh two tons, but it was entered into the machine as three and a half tons,” he claimed. The car dealer further said that nowhere near the machine does he see any proof that the operator of the machine is trained. “I want Natis to show us the certificates that the machine operator was trained and
qualified and that the machine was installed correctly, because I cannot see any proof,” he declared. When Namib Independent spoke to Mr Platt, the Chief Traffic Officer, he said that he himself helped the customers on the specific day that the car dealers were there. When Namib Independent mentioned this to the car dealer, he said that he, along with other car dealers, had Mr Platt called from his office to help them understand why the brakes were failed. However, according to the car dealer Mr Platt refused. “Mr Platt was called from his office to help us understand why the brakes were being failed, but he simply refused to test the brakes of new vehicles.” Namib Independent asked the car dealer how he knew that the new machine was not installed correctly and that information was entered into the machine incorrectly. “I myself saw that the machine in Walvis Bay does not test the vehicles correctly. Also, the machine in Swakopmund differs from the machine in Walvis
Bay.” This car dealer also mentioned that the new machine broke while they were there and Natis had to use the old machine again. “When the new machine broke, Natis used the old machine and the brakes were passed. They had the machine fixed and the new machine failed the brakes again.” To finally get some clarity into what was fast turning into a cat fight, the Namib Independent arranged a meeting with Mr Platt. However, just before the meeting it became apparent that Platt was not available. The supervisor of Natis kindly phoned Platt to remind him about the meeting, but Platt said he was busy. “I am very busy with complaints in town. I do not have time right now. Anyone who has a complaint against Natis failing their brakes is welcome to come see me personally, so we can talk about this matter face to face in a grown-up manner without always having to involve the media,” stated Platt.

Ndemula Re-elected as Chairman of the Erongo Regional Council Caroline Kambonga
Hafeni Ludwig Ndemula was re-elected as the Erongo Regional Council Chairperson. He will be serving in this position for the next two and a half years. Johannes Nangolo and Ussiel Paulus Xoagub were elected for the Erongo Regional Council Management Committee. “I’m testifying today that we work very well and very hard together with the councillors and I urge them to put in the donkey gear for the next two and half years,” said the Governor of the Erongo Region, Cleophas Mutjavikua. “I would like us all to double our efforts and take our individual psychological bond towards our people,” stated Ndemula. “Our people are currently facing hardship to put food on their tables. Drought is a reality and our effort is once again needed in order for us to make sure that the neediest are well taken care of,” he added. “This year is a challenging year because of the drought,” stated Ndemula. After explaining how severe the drought is in several areas of the Erongo Region, he reminded everyone that it is not only Erongo that is suffering. “However, I urge you, honourable members, to join forces in making sure that nobody in our region will succumb to hunger because of drought,” he said. “Apart from drought we are faced with a financial constraint, as we budgeted N$34 million and only N$28 million was approved. However, change, development and transformation do not come easily. I urge us all to continue fighting for development until we see the live of our people change,” concluded Ndemula.
Crash Boom Bang On Wednesday the 19th of June two vehicles collided during lunch in front of the police station on Nangolo Mbumba Drive. The Namib Independent spoke to a local traffic officer regarding the accident. “The driver of a Navara was driving past Tren-Tyre on Nangolo Mbumba Drive when the crash occurred.
The owner of the other vehicle came from Gertrude Rikumba Road and drove in front of the Navara as he turned right. The Navara collided with the other vehicle, which overturned. Fortunately, no serious injuries were sustained. The owner of the Navara was however taken to the hospital by St. Gabriels Ambulance services,” he stated.

Mariska Smit - Seeing Into Your Soul
Tanya Calitz Newcomer in town, Optometrist Mariska Smit, gave three Namib Independent staff members the opportunity to have an Iridology test done at her new practice in town. The results were rather surprising and at the same time very interesting. Iridology can be defined as the science of studying and analysing the iris. It is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that provides a trained practitioner with important information of a patient’s overall state of health and strengths and weaknesses. It reveals each individual’s genetic make-up. The ability to view not only the quality of the connective tissue of the iris, but also the functioning of the nervous systems, makes iridology an extremely powerful tool. Any change in the body’s functions, or any disturbance in homeostasis can be seen and interpreted through iridology. The tissue changes that take place in the body make iridology an especially valuable tool in the treatment of chronic disease. The signs in the iris reflect the genetic inherited pattern in constitutions, together with structural, colour and neurological changes that occur within the iris over a period of time. These signs may indicate abnormal tissue conditions. Landmark signs and the density of fibres in relation to the over-all constitution are studied. Every landmark sign has its own unique history and the Iridologist reads and considers the many possible inherent, reflex, chemical, nerve and mental interactions of each system in the individual. A trained practitioner uses iridology to gain an insight into the whole picture before determining the cause behind the problem. The Iridologist can detect signs of biochemical and physiological needs and changes in the body long before the appearance of symptoms, thus enabling the practitioner to prevent disease before it can manifest. “As an optometrist we have a microscopic view of the iris and thus have the best equipment to assess the iris with. I have in truth married two schools of thought and it has proven to be a match made in heaven,” says Mariska. The report compiled by Mariska,
after assessing our irises through her microscope, delivered some interesting truths about each of us. Iridology is almost like a hobby for Mariska and she does not charge for the test, but offers it as a by-product when a patient books an eye test or checks up with her practice. Mariska assessed three different types of eyes. The brown iris, (hematogenic), the blue iris (lymphatic), and the mix (the pupillay zone is a different colour to the cilliary zone or centre portion brown and periphery blue). “In the brown iris that I assessed, the following tendencies were found. The liver needed a detox, hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue (high stress levels), IBS and dysglycemia were present, as well as an excellent genetic structure. Typical race horse phenomenon, she can run fast and recover quickly, but gets over-stressed and this can lead to burn out, which could then lead to the first mentioned anomalies,” Mariska reported. “The blue iris showed signs of acidity, which typically means 'mucus', thus tendency for sinus problems, joint problems and urinary infections. The lung area on the iris showed dark areas, upon which the patient confirmed being a heavy smoker in his younger, colourful days. The collagen structure was very good, which means recovery ability is good with good genetic structure. The iris shows the sins of your past though,” Mariska said. “The mix showed a tendency for sugar imbalances, overactive immune system, hormonal imbalances and some signs in the brain area showed that she could be prone to headaches. This would tie in with her case history of having migraines and she confirmed having related hormonal imbalances. Tendency for being acidic was also noted and the lymphatic system needed a detox. Her dark limbal may signify three things, like a difficult child birth, or systemically, it could mean poor circulation in her skin zone and cold hands and feet, or emotionally, it could mean that she does not let people in easily, but once she lets them in, she does not let go of them easily,” she reported. “I went for the iridology test with an open mind, but thinking
to myself that she will probably say something that several women might struggle with, but then she hit it off with the very first problem and immediately I was a believer and absolutely amazed. It’s definitely not a myth when people say, "your eyes are the window to your soul". I would definitely recommend it to anybody that needs more attention than just the routine and very unsatisfactory eye check up or testing. You got to see it to believe it,” said Michelle van Wyk, who was one of the three who underwent the test. Left with this information each of us had some changes we needed to make in order to get the best result possible for our bodies. After one’s eyes are assesed, Mariska provides you with valuable information on how to overcome your health challenges. The History of Iridology In the early 1800’s a Hungarian physician by the name of Ignatz von Peczely had an experience as a child where he saw strange markings in the iris of an injured owl. Later on as a practicing physician he recalled this experience and started observing his patients' eyes, carefully documenting all his observations. In the mid 1800’s, a Swedish doctor by the name of Nils Liljequest also documented his observations. At about the same time a German practitioner – Pastor Emanuel Felke - developed his skills in iris diagnosis. Emanuel Felke’s contribution to iridology was extensive. His work was documented and furthered by his students since 1857 right up to today. Due to his work, the Felke Institute was established by Dr Willy Hauser in the late 1900’s. In America, Dr Henry Lane and Dr Henry Lindlahr documented and published their work in the early 1900’s. Out of their work the Lindlahr College was born. The most prominent influence on international iridology during the 1980's came from Bernard Jensen. He travelled and taught iridology all over the world. Today John Andrews is one of the most prominent Iridology researchers in the world. His work is rapidly opening up new paths of discovery in the exciting field of Iridology.

For years, many countries and regions have been holding their own Refugee Days, which are celebrated on the 20th of June. However, Namibia will no longer be one of the countries supported by the United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees. Namib Independent spoke to the Executive Director of Namrights, Mr. Phil ya Nangoloh, regarding the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) withdrawing from Namibia. “It is true that the UNHCR will be withdrawing from Namibia in the future due to the fact that there is nothing practical Namibia can do for the refugee population anymore, therefore they will rather support countries that need them more. It will be announced on World Refugee Day that 2013 will be the last year Namibia will be part of the UNHCR,” he said. World Refugee Day draws attention to refugees to celebrate the courage and
determination of the men, women and children who were forced to flee from their homes under the threat of being persecuted. The day serves as a reminder of the difficulties endured while seeking a safe haven away from home. World Refugee Day is also the day the UN General Assembly created the UNHCR to protect and assist forcefully displaced people, especially women and children. The Osire Refugee Camp, situated 250km north of Windhoek, was repurposed in Namibia in 1992 by the Namibian Government. This camp was purposed to provide for the needs of refugees, of which the majority were Angolan refugees. The Permanent Secretary of Home Affairs, Patrick Nandago, said that the voluntary return of Angolan refugees to Angola has been successful. Nandago however stated that the Osire Refugee Camp would no longer be a safe haven for the Angolan refugees because it was not needed anymore.

By Jeff Roberts Have you ever taken a moment to step outside of yourself and look in at your life as an observer? So often we get so caught up in our own movie that we forget to realise that everyone is seeing the world from their own version of reality, or their own movie. Each person’s movie is the only one that they see, and everyone that is in it all play the supporting roles. Think about all the thoughts you have on a daily basis. There are probably thousands of them. Every person out there is thinking about their life at all times, just like you are at this moment. I looked at my father the other day, and thought about what his movie might be like. I stepped out of myself and looked in at him and my family. I saw the weathered soul of a man who required the same soul nourishment as we all do, but who never properly supplied himself with it or received it for a few reasons. For the most part, men in society are expected to fulfil a certain role to maintain an identity which is based around this role. Men are the strong ones, emotionally and physically, and are the protectors and providers for women and children. We see this so often with corporate jobs, labour jobs, or trades jobs; men working long and difficult hours, spending time away from their family and friends, working most of their life away until they get sick or until they retire. Men are also expected to be strong emotionally, for to see a male cry is usually unexpected and touching more so than seeing a female or child crying. For this reason, men often internalise emotional experiences throughout their lives. As humans, we feel emotions to release energy so that we can heal and grow, so this expectation of men could possibly be stunting their mental and spiritual growth. I had a brother who passed away in 2011. I remember going through the pain as a family. Thinking back to the year of his passing, I can remember the compassion and love that was shown for our family by family and friends. However, I recall how people showed their care and the questions that they would ask, and for the most part the questions were aimed towards how my mother was dealing with the death, and how her healing journey was progressing. It appeared
that people were more concerned about my mother’s wellbeing as opposed to my father’s. I’m not saying that people didn’t ask my father how he was doing, but in general it seemed as though that people expected my father to be coping better than my mother, even though it was both of their child. So there is that expectation again. Discussing our feelings and thoughts about important things in our lives is cathartic for most. It is common to see women sharing their feelings with their friends and family. Being a waiter in restaurants for the past 6 years, I’ve seen this first hand. Women sitting for hours on end drinking their wine or tea, chatting about their lives. When men are dining together, it is a different experience. For the most part, men want their food quick and want to be in and out as soon as possible. When was the last time you saw two manly men sitting together talking about how things make them feel? I’ve noticed with my own father and other people’s fathers the trouble they have expressing their feelings and emotions. This does not mean that men do not have these feelings, but rather that these feelings are mostly internalised. At a deeper level we all require the same things to feel nourished, such as love, peace, and acceptance. The cultural definition of a man and the role that they take on in society makes it difficult for men to communicate these needs, and this affects their personal growth as a human. Be aware of this, and break the norm the next time you see your dad or a guy-friend by giving them a hug instead of a handshake, or by asking them how they have been feeling in the hectic times we are living in. As we progress through the massive world changes currently taking place, it is important to let go of the definitions that were created in the past and to embrace a new paradigm. This means letting go of the identities created around masculinity and femininity. Ask yourself this question, if someone were to suddenly reveal to you that everything that you were so sure was true about life and the universe was actually false, could you release your all of your attachments and accept it? Or would you go into a state of resistance and fear instead? This question is an important one to be asking ourselves throughout this phase in our lives. We are so much more than we have been lead to believe.

Photographic Competition Congratulations to the Namib Independent for initiating the coastal amateur photographic competition. Well done to all the winners as well. I think this is a brilliant initiative and needs to be continued. This was a new project and was about creating a template for future events. Like all new initiatives some unforeseen flaws became apparent, which need to be streamlined for future events. It was said in the competition launching blurb that entrants must “… focus on the quality, composition and artistic merits of the image. This is not a happy, snappy competition. We know that there is really good talent on the coast and we are hoping to see some really well thought out images posted to our Facebook page,” said Willem. Looking back at the competition entries, I think the above statement needs to be considered and some form of screening of entries should have been done before
uploading to the FB page. Also it was never really clear as to the number of entries allowed and the name of the entrant and a caption for the entry should accompany all entries on the FB page. The popular vote is a really nice idea, it involves the community and the photographer gets support from his or her friends, it is also a great way of getting people to visit the Namib Independent FB page, great advertising. However, referring to the statement about quality, composition etc. I feel that pictures should also be judged on some form of photographic merit rather than potentially biased opinions of friends only. The newspaper and the sponsor should also select a winner besides the popular winner. I would say that entrants have 7 days to submit entries, which are not uploaded immediately, but are judged by the organisers. All the accepted entries should then be published with a week
allowed for voting and a popular winner to be identified. The final result should then be announced for both category winners and prizes awarded accordingly. In this way, 3 rounds can be covered in 6 weeks, or it may be better to have only one competition spread over one month. If there are to be more than one round then I feel that a winner in one round, in any category, may not enter subsequent rounds. Each of the round winners should then be judged to find an overall winner. John Paterson

THE Western Cape has several great driving roads – some better known than others. Over a bumpy piece of blacktop, reminiscent of a tarmac rally stage, the Tangerine Scream Ford Focus ST grips hard and irons out bumps with more aplomb than the car it replaces. When flicking the quick-rack wheel at the entry to a tight bend, the driver is braced by the Recaro bucket seat. Swapping between third and fourth gears ushers in a surge of torque that enables the ST to negotiate the tagliatelle of tar. All the while, the motor sings sweetly and paints a wide smile on its driver’s face. However, the styling is as per the regular Focus, which is to say, fussy. In our eyes, the latest incarnation of Ford’s hatch is over-styled and seems to be dating rather quickly. In ST guise, there is the obligatory chunkier body kit, larger alloys, rear aerofoil and funky exhaust tip that protrudes from the centre of the bumper. The test unit was painted in Tangerine Scream, or eyesearing metallic orange. Unlike its predecessor, this model is available only with five doors. In the ST we get the first glimpse of Ford’s EcoBoost technology, which basically refers to downsizing and the employment of turbocharging in conjunction with direct injection and variable valve timing to maintain power while reducing harmful emissions. Displacing 2,0 litres, the allalloy unit employs direct injection to develop an impressive 184 kW and 360 N.m of torque. These peak values put the ST near the top of its segment in terms of outputs. Drive is delivered to the front wheels via a six-speed gearbox. Ford has yet to embrace the dual-clutch option for its ST models, a strategy that could well hurt sales if you consider how many DSG-fitted GTIs are sold.
During testing, the ST was very impressive. By balancing the grip and engine torque, we managed a zero-to-100 km/h sprint time of 6,82 seconds, fractionally off Ford’s claim of 6,5 seconds. By the time we had reached the kilometre marker, a true 200 km/h was showing on our VBOX test equipment. It may be a decent performer in a straight line, but the Ford Focus ST is more impressive when the tarmac twists and turns. As with other Focuses, the ST rides on an all-independent suspension. The setup has been well tuned and the car boasts a ride that ideally walks the line between sportiness and comfort. More importantly, the new ST has better body control at speed, with the ability to recompose itself quickly when dealing with mid-corner bumps. Ford opted for full electrical assistance on the steering rack, which features a variable rate and requires just 1,8 turns from lock-to-lock. This does, however, rob the helm of feel. The wheel wriggles in your palms when you floor it or when encountering road camber changes, and it tramlines, although this is to be expected of a FWD car with this much torque on tap. There is no RevoKnuckle suspension joint or limited-slip differential to assist the front wheels with having to steer and apply power simultaneously. Instead, Ford has opted for an electronic torque-vectoring system. The system tries to mimic the effects of a mechanical LSD but doesn’t feel the same. That said, it does put its power down well, with little intrusion from the ESP until the driver starts to act really silly. There is impressive resistance to understeer in tighter corners. The ST is a very easy car to drive fast. It takes only a short time behind the wheel to settle into a fast rhythm. The high grip levels instil confidence and for those who are keen to explore the upper limits of adhesion, the balance changes from neutral to slight oversteer. Test Summary Overall, the new Ford Focus ST is a great car. As any good hot hatch should, it balances practicality and performance. There has been a step up in terms of ride quality and refinement. Additionally, there is a level of balance here that the older car did not display. Blue Oval fans will no doubt rejoice at the introduction of the hottest ST to date.

The Soccer Battle of the Classic Clashes Last weekend there was a lot of action on soccer field at the coast Namib High and De Duine School, as well as Swakop Secondary School and Coastal High School met on the Vineta and Mondesa fields for the FNB Classic Clashes. Namib High School beat De Duine with 3-0. The game was described as very exciting with both teams visiting their opponent’s goal area. Sebastian van Oppen, striker of Namib High, was chosen as the FNB Classic Clash Man of the Match, while David Shatika of Namib High who excels in academics and chess, is the Namib Mills Hero. “A very exciting game
took place with both teams visiting their opponent’s goal area. A lot of skill display fom Namib-High resulted in winning against De Duine. De Duine did not utilise the few chances they got and it was unfortunate for them.. Their opponents had striker van Oppen, who converted the two chances he got to put the game out of reach. Von Oppens individual brilliance earned him the Man of the Match,” said Michael McNab. In the match between Swakop Secondary School (SSS) and Coastal High School, the hosts SSS won 4-3 with penalties. Simon Taaipopi of the SSS was crowned Namib Mills Hero while
Branwell Beukes, also of SSS, walked away with the title of FNB Classic Clash Man of the Match. “A tight game took place consisting of a lot of brilliant moments, especially in the first half. SSS's professional soccer could not be
converted into goals, they were losing a game they were totally in control of. But they eventually came back into the game and started dictating the pace. SSS got their equaliser, took the game to penalties and eventually won against
Coastal High.,” said McNab. Next weekend soccer will once again be played at the coast in Kuisebmond. FNB Namibia invites everyone to join and enjoy the FNB Classic Clashes 2013.
RVS Equestrian Open Fun Day & Go-Kart Challenge In support of the Equestrian Coastal League Namibia (ECLN) Youth Rider Team, participating in Germany in September this year, some very exciting fund-raisers have been conducted and more are in the pipeline. Winners of the Raffle Draw The raffle draw for a wheel-barrow packed with assorted goodies took place on Sunday afternoon at the RVS. A tourist from the USA and a visitor from Swaziland had the honours of drawing the lucky numbers. The fortunate winner of this bountiful wheelbarrow was Ms D Snyman from Swakopmund. The 2nd prize went to M. Braeuer from Swakopmund, who won a bottle of perfume sponsored by Mr B Reimers, while the 3rd prize was won by T Kubirske from Windhoek, who also won a bottle of perfume kindly sponsored by
Goju Karate Brings Back 13 Medals
The Walvis Bay Goju Ryu Karate Club brought back 13 medals from the 34th National Championship which was hosted on 8th June 2013 in Windhoek. This event will be used to select the Namibian National Goju Ryu Karate Team that will participate at The IOGKFSA Tournament that will be held in Paarl, RSA in August 2013 From left to right, back to front, the delighted medal winners: Immandy Muiaine got 1st place in the Girls Orange Kata 1995 – 1999 category. The aim will be to have 30 teams, 2 drivers per team, entering this competition as well as individual racers. Each team will take part in a 20 lap main race. The top 20 teams will then enter into the 20 lap semifinal race. The Grand Final championship
race will consist of 20 laps and will be open for the top 10 teams, who will all strive towards one target – winning the championship race. Individual races will also be offered and will have the same criteria as the team challenges. Huge cash & consolation prizes in various categories are up for grabs.
