closer look and investigate these allegations of neglect and poor patient care by hospital staff and the doctors. A male patient told the Namib

Independent about an incident relating to the weekend setup at the private hospital. He claimed that there were no scans, x-rays or cat scans done over the weekend. “I went into hospital on the Friday with severe pain in my abdomen. I was treated by my doctor on that Friday and had to stay over-night. The next day I woke up with even more pain than the day before. I asked the nurses to call in my doctor, because I was not feeling well and felt even worse than the previous day.” The patient, who wishes to stay anonymous, suspected some form of infection. “They said that they had a look at my chart and according to my chart I did not have an infection,” he explained, “and my eyes did not look like that of a

person with an infection, as well as the fact that I did not have any symptoms of fever.” According to the patient, the nurses told him that they do not do scans and blood tests over the weekend and that he should wait till Monday. “You know, I was in so much pain, I called my daughter who lives in town to bring me pain tablets from home, because the nurses said I could not have had such pain. She brought me pain pills for two days, which was such a relief,” he said. The patient further alleges that on Monday it was discovered that he had serious infections and he was then treated as a case of emergency immediately. “I feel that if the staff responded with more urgency or if they at least did a scan on the Friday evening Continued on Page 3

Super Moon Sunday Continued from Page 1

Madelaine Laubscher Sunday, 23 June marked an especially bright and big moon. Many people here on the coast took the opportunity and climbed up Dune 7 to view the moon far away from any disturbing light. We had a full moon at perigee, which means that the moon was at the closest point to Earth on its elliptical orbit. The ‘Super Moon’, as it is generally called, created a wave of awe around the world. For days before, the global community

went all lunar. Although an annual event, the perigee full moon still impresses people and sparks stories; like that it increases the risk of volcanic eruptions and earth quakes. Even though the moon does influence oceanic and crustal tides alike, there is no scientific evidence for a connection to natural disasters. “It is simply well known that tides are highest during new and full moons, which means if there is a storm surge during a perigee new or full moon, more than unusually high coastal flooding might

occur,” explains Mark Hammergen, an astronomer at the Adler Planetarium, Illinois, USA. This year’s Super Moon coincided with the Winter Solstice, which is “more unusal,” says Hammergen. “This kind of celestial geometry repeats roughly every 14 years.” According to National Geographic, this year was the closest the moon has been to the Earth so far. However, next year’s perigee full moon, booked in around 10 August, is expected to be even closer – at an estimated 365 900 kilometres from Earth.

or weekend, I could have been given the correct treatment immediately and would not have had to suffer all weekend long. Also the infection was really bad by the Monday, causing me to be hospitalised much longer than I would have been if I was actually taken sick during the week and not weekend,” he told the Namib Independent. But this is not the only complaint we’ve had. “I went in for an operation the other day. I am always worried when I have to go under as you hear horrific stories about people that go in for simple operations

and never wake up again. Anyway, I was taken to the operating room where I was waiting to be anesthetised. The anaesthetist comes waltzing in, unscrubbed, and simply plonks her bag on a table near my head. I have never seen such a thing. Are there not supposed to be rules about cleanliness and hygiene in an operating room?” said a female patient. One more case presented to the Namib Independent was that of a mother with her toddler who had received a severe injury in the house. “We had to wait for almost an hour before the doctor could

come in, because he was at church. The nurses did well to stop the pain, but when something happens to your babies, you need a doctor to consult with you and to reassure you immediately,” said the mother. Numerous additional incidents were reported, of people who feel that they did not get cared for with the level of urgency as they would expect from a Private Hospital. During these interviews the primary questions raised were on the lack of onsite doctors at the hospital 24/7, and why the hospital did not do scans and x-rays over the weekend. Another question which was raised was why so many patients get diagnosed or treated over the phone. The Hospital’s Operating Manager, Penny Dawson, and one of the board Directors, Dr Roberts, took the time to explain the inner workings of the hospital and answer some of the tough questions several patients have raised with the Namib Independent. “What the patients need to understand is the fact that the patient’s perspective of an emergency and the medical reality are two very different viewpoints,” said Dr Roberts. “For example; if a person drops an iron bar on their foot, and the toe is broken and burst open at the tip of the toe, that person is definitely going to experience it as an emergency, but in the terms of a medical perspective, this incident is not seen as an emergency. The nurses at our hospital are

more than qualified and equipped to stabilise such a person’s situation and give him the necessary treatment, without an immediate scan. In such an instant an x-ray can definitely wait until Monday,” Roberts explained. However, if the doctor sees it as an emergency all the necessary scans or x-rays will be done on the weekend, said Dr Roberts. “The minute the doctor requests a scan of any sort, I can reassure you this will be done, but we cannot give scans all the time if a patient feels the need,” Dr Roberts explained. Another issue raised was the fact that the hospital does not have doctors onsite 24/7. Roberts explained that the doctors all have their own private practises and that they do shifts at the hospital voluntarily. “We do not have any authority over the doctors. They all work for themselves,” Roberts explained. Dawson found it rather disconcerting that all these patients lodged their complaints with the newspaper, instead of coming to her or any of the management team to express their unhappiness with the treatment and service they received at the hospital. “What the patients should understand is that we cannot be held liable if a patient is unhappy with one of the private doctor’s services. We can however address issues brought to our attention about hospital staff not complying with our policy when given bad service

Continued from Page 1 by an actual hospital employee.” This was then when the question was raised in regards to why the Hospital does not employ doctors directly. “It is as simple as the fact that the hospital cannot afford to hire doctors. Just the insurance alone on one doctor per month will cost the hospital N$ 6000, and then we have not even paid the doctor a salary. Essentially we would also have to employ at least three doctors in order to rotate and give each doctor time of. It is simple not viable for the hospital,” Roberts explained. He said that what one must remember is that the hospital was built by the doctors of town for the doctors of town, to have a place to treat their patients. “Many years ago we felt that there was an immense need for a proper hospital in Walvis Bay. We, as the private doctors, looked everywhere for companies and individuals to invest in a private hospital, but no-one was interested. Then we decided to bite the bullet and do it ourselves. A handful of doctors came together, got a loan from the bank and established this hospital. We started with 9 beds and now we have 50. We are very proud of what we have achieved so far,” Roberts explained. “This is why it is so very important to us that patients who have had bad experiences should come and speak to us, so that we can rectify the issue or better explain to patients when there seems to be ill feelings,” Dawson said.

Industry Insiders Come Together to Curb Illegal Oil Dumping Tanya Calitz Once again the Walvis Bay Municipality is faced with the frustration of illegal oil dumpers who gained access to the dump site over the weekend by allegedly bribing the security personell. “This is unfortunately a perfect example of someone gaining unauthorised access to the landfill site and disposing of their oil illegally,” said Municipal Public Relations Officer, Kevin Adams. Adams declared that the person who dumped their oil will be found and held liable for their act. According to an eyewitness at the landfill site it appears that the oil was dumped very shortly before he dropped off his garden rubble. “I took the photos at 1:23 to 1:30pm today (Sunday) and I reckon the oil was dumped less than a hour before, as there was oil still flowing into some pools from other pools on a higher level. Added to this there was no one at the gate manning the weighbridge, it was closed and traffic

was diverted through the boom. The area where the dumping took place was opposite the turn in to the Hazmat dump facility,” the Walvis Bay resident told the Namib Independent. According to several major role players in the oil industry, incidents like this make it difficult for everyone. “My biggest frustration over this weekend’s oil dumping incident is the fact that it was recyclable oil and not heavy fuel oil (HFO). We could have bought the oil from him and used it,” said Leon Kuhn, the Logistics Manager for Exigrade. The key role players have all come together on Wednesday to try and find solution for the problem, stated Kuhn. “We decided to establish a group in order to regulate the oil dumping activities. We have all put money together to build a road to the oil dumping site. The area will be prepared and thoroughly regulated to eliminate these cases of illegal dumping,” Kuhn explained. According to him, Wednesday will be the only day to dispose of oil at the designated

Küska 2013 Laura Callard This year’s motto rung true once again, when Swakopmund was transformed into a bit of a circus last week. The highlight of the spectacle was, as always, the parade on Saturday, 22 June. At exactly 11h11 – following ancient carnival’s tradition - the convoy left from Steckel Toyota. Many a festively decorated wagon could be admired, from the German Lutheran Church circus cart to the Küska wagon itself. The Garde led the procession all through the town so that nobody – I repeat, nobody at all – would miss the fantastic spectacle. With music blaring from various speakers, the carnivalists enjoyed their last round through “their” town immensely. Young and old alike came from all over Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay too, to see this last Hurrah. The Prince and Princess, who symbolically received the town’s key from the Mayor beginning of the week, showed their gratitude and good mood throughout

spot. “We will also put up proper security at the site to ensure no unauthorised person gets access to the dumpsite,” Kuhn explained. “The question still remains though; where will these illegal dumpers go now, if they cannot gain access to the dumpsite anymore,” an industry insider asked. Another issue was raised by the Albatross Task Force’s Project Manger, John Paterson, over the oil spills. “A big concern of oil lying in pools is the very real possibility of oiling of birds such as gulls that are attracted to the dump. The reflecting oil may potentially also attract other water birds such as flamingos. I have on several occasions seen oiled birds in the lagoon area, we have always assumed that the oiling comes from the harbour area, but now it has become apparent that there is another potential source of oiling. It is not possible to say for sure where oiled birds are contaminated, but open pools of oil are a strong contender,” Paterson stressed.

No Town Without a Clown

the whole event. Generally, all good things come to an end, but the parade just pulled into SFC’s parking lot, and the party moved straight into its last stretch: the Kehraus. The traditional goodbye to any carnival in Namibia, it is a last chance for everybody to really let their hair down before the actual mayor and the dreary day-to-day life rule the town again. Around 2pm, the program started, and once again the organisers proved that “Küska is the best carnival in Namibia”, as they like to say. Before anything else, thanks had to be said and those went to Formula Courier for sponsoring the vans and prizes for the parade, and to the SFC for being the Küska’s long-trusted venue. Then, Prince Horst the Second the First Second, and Princess Tanya, the First with One Horsepower, informed the audience that Küska could be found on Facebook and Twitter, making the common post-box useless. A rather new tradition, only a few years old but quite necessary by now, is that all speeches are held trilingually

so folk from all walks of life can enjoy the entertainment. With the Küska hymn “Ein Prosit”, which by now every non-German can sing, the parade winners were announced. The first price went to KlaunTownCircus, the second to CTM and the third to the German Lutheran Church. Once the formalities were sorted out, the program turned to the (more) fun side of things – performances by the well-trained Garde. After such a fantastic opening, it only got better with the Küskika Garde, the in-betweeners and the Ex-Garde who threw their legs to songs like Anywhere, Anytime, Anyhow by Nena or Marron 5’s Moves like Jagger. The highlight, however, was the performance by Matthias Henrichsen and Hildegard Jochelsen, in their function as Funkenmajor and Funkenmarie. The huge audience really enjoyed themselves. As usual, the bar was well packed, but snacks were also on offer for those that exhausted themselves shouting “Zickezacke, zickezacke,

hoi hoi hoi!” After a few encores of the more spectacular acts, the program ended. Of course, the party went on for long after that, with entertainment by Get 2 and Double Trouble, lots of dancing and beer. Since this year was such a success for the Küska, we can only hope that they are able to top it next year.

Farmers’ Conference in Swakopmund Caroline Kambonga This year’s drought has been a major problem in all regions in Namibia. To be able to withstand such toils in the years to come, the Coastal Weekend Farmers’ Association (CWFA) organised a meeting of farmers last weekend.

The objective was to educate farmers so that they could improve farming methods and are better prepared for unforeseen situations. Dr Hartman WInterbach from the Veterinarian Offices in Swkaopmund explained how and what type of vaccination should be used when, stressing that the instructions for any product need to be read and followed meticulously. The farmers seemed very grateful for this information. Dr WInterbach believes that, “it is much better to give information to a big group instead of only one person. This session has allowed farmers to ask question, and I was able to answer them there and then.” Another point on the agenda was the feed cattle need, which is between 300-400kg a day, according to Frank Kanguatjivi from Feed Master. “With their grazing, cattle need to ingest protein, phosphates as well as other

minerals and vitamins daily. Here in the Erongo region we have hardly enough grazing area, and sourcing roughage puts great limits on farmers,” he explained. “To ensure sustainable growth for your cattle, using other sources like Feed Master is unavoidable.” Seeing that that can get very expensive – up to N$1500 a month – Kanguatjivi recommends that farmers who have more than 50 cattle sell those that they don’t need to reduce costs. “This year has been a very difficult year for me, I never knew that cattle farming is so expensive,” exclaimed Chris Tjombe, a resident

from Swakopmund. “I was never prepared because every year we received rain, now I need to sell some of my cattle to be able to afford Feed Master for the rest,” said Mrs Ngutuana, also a coastal farmer. “We normally have this session yearly,” stated Irua Uaaka, Vice Treasurer of the CWFA. “We invite vet doctors, meat board and Meatco experts to teach our farmers every aspect that deals with farming. Farmers always come back for more and they always learn something new,” he added.

“The Labour Act Should be Translated Into All Languages,” Says Minister Sioka

Tanya Calitz The Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Doreen Sioka, attended a labour discussion between Unions, stakeholders and the Ministry on Monday, which was held at the Walvis Bay Municipal Chambers. Some of the issues and concerns raised by the Unions and stakeholders in the field of labour were mostly based on misunderstandings and a lack of proper communication. “We still find employers who fail to engage with their employee’s about wages and the workplace conditions,” said one of the Labour Union’s Representatives. He used this opportunity to appeal to all employers to engage more with their workers. Another concern raised by the Labour Union Representative was that the Unions should advise the employee’s better, in order to speed up processes. A further issue was the vast amount of complaints the Unions received from employees who work under foreign employers, in particular the Chinese Investors and Employers.

Minister Sioka responded to these problems by saying that there should be more communication between the different parties, in order to make sure they understand each other. “I can imagine it must be very difficult for people to understand each other with so many backgrounds and different interpretations of situations, therefore I feel that it is of utmost importance that each employer and employee should get a copy of the Labour Law Act in their mother tongue so they can understand exactly what the Act says,” Sioka said. She also said, after listening to the different issues raised and the problem that kept coming up, the issue basically comes down to lack of communication and understanding, different interpretations of the Act, language barriers, engagement and planning. Sioka urged her Labour Inspectors to work more in the field and explain the Act in laymen terms to the workers. “We must educate

each other on the Act. We must share our knowledge and encourage each other to go out in the field and teach,” she said in Monday’s meeting. Another issue which was raised by Labour Unions is the fact that the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare in Walvis Bay is understaffed. “We need more manpower at the labour offices so that we can speed up processes,” said Daniel Imbili of the Trade Union Congress of Namibia. Imbili also pleaded with the Minister to make provision for the Unions to have direct contact with the Minister’s office to solve issues quicker. The Minister addressed these issues by saying that they need to have more workshops to train people to understand the law, that way the processes will run smoother. Sioka also stated that some of the labour laws need to be amended, in order to better protect both the employer and employee. Last but not least, Sioka said that foreign employers, who do not abide with Namibian

“Women Should Go Beyond Demonstrating” Caroline Kambonga "We are experiencing a serious attack on women, but after two weeks of demonstration everything is forgotten. I urge for all Namibian women to take a serious stand and action and go beyond demonstrating," said Governor of the Erongo Region, Cleophas Mutjavikua, at the Launch of Namibian Women Summit 2013 (NWS) last week Friday in Swakopmund. The Namibian Women Summit will be held from 7 - 9 August 2013 in Swakopmund, with the motto "Let Your Light Shine Through". The NWS is a gathering of all Namibian women where they discuss issues that relate to women and affect their lives, with the objective of empowering Namibian women. The First Lady of Namibia, Penehupifo Pohamba, will be one of the guest speakers. "Smart partnership, networking, capacity building, mentoring, director’s training and coaching will be some of the topics the NWS will focus on. This is a platform were we as woman sit and talk; we share ideas and help each other," said Anne Gebhart, the president of the Namibian Women Summit. The NWS was established in 2006 to help women face their challenges and work hand in hand with men to make lives easier. "We are not taking over; we want our complaints and wants to be considered," explained Anne Gebhart. The Erongo Regional Governor suggested that the NWS should Electricity usage is highest during peak times, 08:00 to 10:00 in the consider compulsory national services for every learner, Grade morning and 19:00 to 20:00 in the evening. 10 dropper and Grade 12 learner, before going to universities to Please avoid using washing machines, dishwashers, pool pumps, irons teach discipline to every child. “Women are the substance of a and all other appliances you do not need to use during these times. human being,” were the words of Swakopmund Mayor, Juuso Let’s work together and use electricity sparingly. If one receives poor service from a waiter/waitress in a restaurant at the coast, what's the best way to show your displeasure?

Dear Ed, As some of the worst service at restaurants on the coast is way below subpar please find some ideas for our restaurant patrons below. A few years ago a friend of

mine worked at a restaurant. It was one of those restaurants where the front of the house staff ran wild and did so under the watch-less eye of my friend's boss'- then-wife, an uneducated lady but entitled woman in her early 20s who

thought she knew the restaurant business and let the waiters and waitresses get by with things that would have warranted an immediate firing on most restaurant manager's watch. One night my friend, a Chef, was in the kitchen alone when a man walked into it. Usually he'd have thrown a knife or a pan, but he was tired. The man, a patron from the evening, stood in the pass and said: "The service was atrocious, the waiter was a disgrace to the craft, the Duty Manager's attention to their duty is so bad they

What on Earth are They Doing? A reader sent in this picture and asked the Namib Independent if we knew what the digging is that is happening at the Lagoon, so we made a few phone calls and got you an answer. According to the municipality this process is called dredging. Excess sand is being removed from the lagoon

banks in order to keep it from blowing onto the grass areas and residential area during low tide. The sand accumulated there over a period of time due to string wind from the desert’s side. Another reason given by a resident is that this process also creates a nice flow in the lagoon.

couldn't roll a ball down a hill if they were paid, but the food was great. Mind if I leave my tip with you and the dishwasher?" And so he did, one hundred bucks, two fifties, one for him and one for Herna, the dishwasher. Since that day I do and suggest readers do the same. If the food was good but the service was atrocious I walk to the host / duty manager and tell the truth how I felt about the service but loved the food and can't bear to tip for that poor of a performance but want to show gratitude for good food. That's usually enough to get me

the owner and it quickly trickles into the kitchen. What this does is three things: it doesn't make you look like just a cheap bastard who is making things up to save on tip. It shames the waiter or waitress who basically define themselves as being "better" than the cooks / chefs, makes them think how to better their service next time, because they make three times as much as a chef, and it delights the kitchen, something chefs always look for and respond with getting out great food ... Gourmet Guy Walvis Bay, Namibia

Q. Why do men's clothes have buttons on the right while women's clothes have buttons on the left? A. When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid's right! And that's where women's buttons have remained since. Q. Why do ships and aircraft use 'mayday' as their call for help? A. This comes from the French word m'aidez - meaning 'help me' - and is pronounced approximately, 'mayday'. Q. In golf, where did the term 'Caddie' come from? A. When Mary Queen of Scots went to France as a young girl, Louis, King of France, learned that she loved the Scots game 'golf'. So he had the first course outside of Scotland built for her enjoyment. To make sure she was properly chaperoned (and guarded) while she played, Louis hired cadets from a military school to accompany her.

Mary liked this a lot and when she returned to Scotland (not a very good idea in the long run), she took the practice with her. In French, the word cadet is pronounced 'ca-day' and the Scots changed it into 'caddie'.

What is it? Goodbye, high-rise oddity; hello lower, wider and more conventional five-door hatch alternative to Audi A3 and BMW 1-Series rivals. Mercedes has at last turned the A-Class into a real contender. Third time lucky, you could say. It’s a good looking design, with a lot going on: rising swage lines, bonnet creases, LED clusters… you certainly couldn’t call it anonymous. It’s especially head-turning with optional big wheels, black glossy bits, pointy ‘Sport’ grille and huge sunroof. The lure of the options list is compelling. Beneath it is a brand-new front-drive chassis, a new engine line-up and, says Mercedes, availability of extras you normally only find on a C-Class and E-Class. You can turn your A-Class into a futuristic high-tech utopia, if you have the cash. Driving It’s very Mercedes-ish to drive, and we mean that in a good way. The A-Class feels brilliantly solid and expensive – not bulky, just superbly built and cosseting. You’re isolated from the outside world to an astonishing degree. Road and wind noise are near non-existent, the A-Class hushing along like a far bigger, pricier machine. Bumps are absorbed expertly, miles are devoured with relish: as we say, just like a Merc. If you’re after a lithe, snappy rival to the BMW 1-Series, then, look elsewhere: it’s fun to drive, but in its own way. With multi-link rear suspension and quick, accurate steering, the A-Class is a nicely balanced thing to chuck about, but the front tyres run out of grip quickly and the whole experience is a bit remote. It is very, very quiet though. So far, we’ve mainly driven the mid-range A 200 CDI, a 1.8-litre diesel, and kept bashing it into the rev limiter. Not because the four-cylinder diesel is particularly low-revving, but because it’s so well insulated that you’ve no idea it’s reaching its redline.

On the inside It’ll be no surprise to discover it’s not as practical as the old A-class. That’s why it doesn’t look like a small commercial vehicle, but the rear is still (just about) acceptable for six-footers anyway. It also has a bigger boot than a 1-Series. The dash is good, blending sporty SLS cues with the elegance of bigger Mercs. Wavy surfaces, lots of soft-touch plastics and soft leather all help. Verdict

A perfectly passable base-spec A-Class but the ones you really want will require you to spend a lot more than expected. You’ll also want the optional iPhone Siri kit. Economy is high and emissions are low. There are five trims, but the one we want to get our hands on is the AMG version. Finally the BMW 1 Series has a contender.
