Suidwes Diensstasie Fire Elderly Woman Dies, Others Seriously Injured Tanya Calitz An elderly woman tragically died in an uncontrolled fire, which broke out Tuesday night in the flats above Laoma Butchery at the ‘Suidwes Diensstasie’ complex in Rikumbi Kandanga Street. According to fire fighters on the scene the fire raged through all six of the flats, getting dangerously close to the Total service station area. “We had 27 men and 5 fire trucks on the scene fighting the flames until about 3am this morning,” said Willie van Zyl, Head of Walvis Bay Municipal Fire Brigade, yesterday. According to van Zyl, their first challenge was to get everyone to safety. Then, the goal was to stop the fire from reaching the fuel pumps on the Total service station premises. According to van Zyl the deceased could not be reached in time, as she was completely surrounded by the
flames. Although it cannot be said with certainty, it is alleged that the fire was started by a cigarette in the woman’s room. According to bystanders on the scene, other occupants of the flats jumped from the second floor of the building to escape the furious flames. One woman sprained her ankle badly and was taken to hospital. Another ill-fated incident involved ‘Suidwes Diensstasie’ complex owner, Mr Wynand Swart, who rushed into the burning building to help the trapped occupants. Some of the structure collapsed onto him, breaking his leg. “We are devastated by the tragedy,” Mrs Swart told the Namib Independent from the hospital in Windhoek where her husband was to be operated. According to Mrs Swart the butchery and the service station itself were not destroyed by the fire, but the flats are ruined. “All six apartments were completely destroyed by the fire. Woman Beater Mulder a Free Man
Lana Groenewald Despite laying a charge of Attempted Murder against her attacker, Ms. Helen Adams of Walvis Bay had to watch the accused Mr. Andrè Mulder walk away a free man on Wednesday, after he pleaded guilty to the much lesser crime of
Grievous Bodily Harm and Assault. Mulder, who originally had a case of Attempted Murder after seriously assaulting Helen Adams in April of this year, appeared on Grievous Bodily Harm charges in the Walvis Bay Magistrate court on Wednesday where it was determined that to walk away scot free, he need only pay a fine. I have not yet seen the rest of the complex, but from what I heard the butchery and the rest of the service station had bad soot and water damage,” she said distressed. According to van Zyl, the deceased lost her life by suffocating from the thick smoke. “It was a tough fire to extinguish because of all the wood structures and the fact that the building is
so high,” van Zyl explained. “But with excellent team work and no shortage of water we eventually extinguished the fire entirely,” he added. According to Bank Windhoek Branch Manager, Mr Stander, their building, which is right next to the flats that burned, suffered no damage. “We were very lucky in this regard, and to my knowledge had no damage to our building,” he said.

The complainant Adams and her family are distraught at the outcome of the short trial, which lasted approximately an hour. According to Adams her main witness, Ms Rauna Shipahu, in what she perceives as Attempted Murder, was not even called to the stand to defend her case. “I am seriously distressed by the outcome of the Magistrate’s ruling in court today,” a visibly upset Adams told the Namib Independent afterwards. According to Adams, Mulder was given a 3-year sentence, or the option to pay a fine of N$6000 to skip his jail sentence. “It is no problem for him to get that amount of money together to get out of his sentence.” Adams, who did not have a private lawyer to defend her case, as the custom in such instances is that the accused receives the services of a state prosecutor, said that she appointed a private lawyer immediately after the court ruling. “I will appeal the sentence. I cannot let this go. My life

supporters, Mulder claimed that he and the Adams are engaged and about to get married, but according to Adams they were never engaged, nor does she ever want to see the accused again. “I fear for my life. That man is a threat to me and society,” Adams said. Another concern raised by members who attended the hearing is the fact that the main witness, who had been subpoenaed to court, was not even called to the stand. “I do not understand how the magistrate can make a ruling without questioning all the witnesses. Ms Rauna was present when Mulder tried to kill Adams. She was the one who actually saved Adam’s life that day Mulder came to her office and threw a cup of coffee at her and violently attacked her,” one said. According to the testimonies, Mulder pleaded guilty to GBH and Asault, but claimed that he only acted out of self-defence when Adams attacked him and only used the palm of his hand, not fists, to defend himself. Adam’s supporters feel
that the court ruling sends a message to the coast and country that one can get away with assaulting your female partner, and shows other abusers that it is not such a serious offence. “I was once involved in a case where one man was charged with seriously assaulting another, and the accused was sentenced to three years imprisonment, no alternatives. What message does this court ruling send to our community?” Adams’ friend asked. Adams claims that his assertion that she attacked him and that he only used his open hand is absurd and a downright lie, and that anyone can see from the records that she could only have ended up looking like she did from serious fist beatings, kicking and stomping. According to Adams, she will appeal the court’s ruling and fight this battle to the end. “I feel that the system and our local authorities have failed me and also woman everywhere in this country with the message this sends out,” Adams said.

depends on it,” Adams said. Adams’ Lawyer, Mr Eugene Thomas, has set about getting a court order against Mulder, in the hopes of keeping him away from Adams. Witnesses who attended the hearing have called the proceedings nothing more than a joke. “I found it very strange that the magistrate questioned both the accused and complainant, and that Adams was sent out of court when Mulder was questioned, but he could stay present when Adams was questioned by the magistrate,” said one witness. Adams stated that Mulder played the court and conned them as he always does. “He walked into court with the Bible under his arm. In the five years I have dated him, he has never referred to the bible as an important element in his life,” Adams proclaimed. According to people on the complainant’s side (Adams), Mulder lied when questioned by the Magistrate. According to one of Adam’s

Local French Restaurant
Receives ‘Chef of the Year’ Title
Ivan Andrei Blazic The air was filled with the sounds of Latin house music and the smell of a veritable plethora of foods while a gentle breeze wafted through the door. Such was the atmosphere at Lyon des Sables on 9 July when we interviewed recently crowned Namibian Chef of The Year, David Thomas. Chef Thomas took part in the Senior category of the ‘Chef of the Year’ competition that took place last week in Windhoek. His junior Chef Stallin Steenkamp came third in the Junior category and a student of his, Shannon Volschenk, came third in the Individual category of the Schools category of the competition. This is the third time that Chef Thomas has won the competition, having won before in 2010 and
2011. In the competition, the chefs had to prepare a starter, a main course and desert using a main ingredient of the judge’s choice. In the senior category, the chefs had to use brown mushrooms as their main ingredient for their starters. Chef Thomas prepared a smoked mushroom soup, marinated egg yolk and oyster tartar with granadilla and sesame oil. For the main course, the ingredient was a whole chicken. Here Chef Thomas prepared a rolled chicken breast with sundried tomato and goat cheese, stuffed baby marrow with a chicken mousse with lemon and thyme, stuffed zucchini with chicken, olives and anchovies, chicken jus and mash potatoes with black truffle flavours. For dessert, the main ingredient that the chefs had to use was apples.
Thomas prepared an oven-backed apple with vanilla and brandy, dark chocolate cream, apple and raspberry chutney and goat cheese cream with lavender. The Senior category chefs were allowed to create their own menus and had two and a half hours to cook for six people. The Junior chefs had to cook classic dishes decided on by the Namibian Chef Association. The Juniors had to make tomato soup with basil crouton as their starters, lamb tenderloin, pommel boulangere, glazed carrots and minted peas for their main courses and dark chocolate brownies for their desserts. The Junior chefs also had two and a half hours to cook for six people. Chef Thomas’s Junior chef prepared that menu with his own vision and ideas. 65 Chefs in total took part in the competition.
i-Consult Donates to
Fairways Neighbourhood Watch
Ivan Andrei Blazic Recently, i-Consult donated two-way radios, reflective vests and a spotlight to the recently formed Fairways Neighbourhood Watch in order to help them fight crime in the area.
The Namib Independent wanted to find out more about the Neighbourhood Watch and got into contact with Mr Gerrit Loedolff, head of the organisation. “About two months ago, residents of the Old Army Camp residential area (Ext. 9- 13) were invited to a meeting by Nampol and members of the Meersig Neighbourhood Watch,” he explained.
“Although our area still has many undeveloped properties, the number of permanent residents has grown substantially over the last few years. That increased the opportunities for criminals. Since Meersig already has a well-developed and active neighbourhood watch, our area became the next easy target.” The community was addressed by Station Commander Muhita, who explained the importance of community policing. He invited them to become involved in fighting crime in their neighbourhood as well as in Walvis Bay in general. Two weeks later, a follow-up meeting with Nampol took place where it was decided that they will go ahead with the new neighbourhood watch. “So far, 27 residents signed up for active patrols while a couple more indicated their willingness to give financial support,” said Mr Loedolff. “Volunteers were drafted into a monthly schedule, and they started on 30 June with the first patrols. All that is
expected of members who do patrols is to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities. What we need are people who are willing to stand up for what is theirs, and willing to be pro-active in fighting crime.” The neighbourhood watch does not issue any weapons to its members, but members may have their own licenced weapon and are bound by the laws of the country. “There is a very good collaboration between the Meersig and Fairways Neighbourhood Watch organisations as well as Nampol,” Loedolff stated. “Although a non-profit organisation, one will incur costs, and therefore those residents who want to support our efforts through financial contributions will be given the opportunity in the near future. However, until now we have been operating without any contributions made or requested. We did, however, receive two-way radios, donated to us by Albertus van Zyl of i-Consult Information Technology Business Systems.”

Ivan Andrei Blazic Last week the Namib Independent received a call from a concerned member of the community, telling us that there were unopened letters in a blue recycle bin outside the Post Office. According to the person, who wishes to stay anonymous, she noticed the thrown away letters after going to the post office to complain about the fact that she had not been receiving her post. The Namib Independent decided to
take a closer look into these allegations. We contacted Nampost Management and informed Mr Frikkie Mouton, the Regional Manager of the Erongo Region of our findings. He assured us that the matter will be looked into immediately. “Thanks for bringing this matter to our attention. My Control Postmaster (Fransiska Geises) at Walvis Bay will investigate and our Public Relations Department will revert back to you,” Mouton said. Unfortunately, by the time of going to print, no further information could be gathered.

The recent relaxation by Government of the five-year age limit on imported cars will definitely see more cars entering Namibia. Namport is prepared to deal with the anticipated increase, Marketing Executive Christian Faure told reporters at a media briefing on Tuesday. The ban that was imposed in 2005 was viewed as a stumbling block by lower income bracket
earners who chided the policy for making their dreams to own a car a pipe dream. Faure stated that from a meager 200 cars per month coming through the port of Walvis Bay, the port is now handling more than 1200 vehicles per month - a phenomenal 600% increase. “Vehicles are one of our success stories,” Faure told reporters. The car imports have generated spinoffs that have benefitted the Municipality of Walvis Bay, clearing agents,
air and road transport operators, hotels and lodge owners, garage owners, fuel filling stations and the retail outlets. The same benefits have been extended to service providers along the corridors used to deliver the cars to their final destinations in Angola, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. However, the relaxation might be a damper on garage owners selling new models since customers are likely to opt for the cheaper imports.

has gained the competitive edge in the shipping industry on the African west coast. The arrival of the third dock will now substantially increase the company’s docking capacity and its ability to compete on an international scale. “The increase in capacity will allow us more flexibility to provide a world class service to our customers. The size of the dock alone will allow us to expand our markets and attract work that might have had to go elsewhere,” says Hannes Uys, Chief Executive Officer of EBH Namibia, explaining that in late 2011 the company had identified a need to increase its docking capacity.

Ship Repair Company Elgin Brown and Hamer (EBH) Namibia has announced the much-anticipated arrival of its third Panamax floating dock in the port of Walvis Bay on Friday, an event which has important strategic implications not only for the company, but for the Namibian economy as a whole. Since its inception in 2006, EBH Namibia has built up a solid reputation for its capacity to offer a holistic service in all aspects of ship repair and the maintenance and repair of offshore supply vessels. With its two floating docks (Namdock 1 and Namdock 2), a consistent track record and strategic geographic location, the company
“We explored various options, and finally sourced the ideal size dock in Newcastle, Australia, and the purchase was concluded in November 2012.” The new Panamax floating dock, 195 meters in length, will enable EBH Namibia to service vessels up to 190 meters in length and 33 meters in beam, increasing the company’s dry docking capacity by 15 000 tons. The dock, as the existing two floating docks, is fully financed through the operations of EBH Namibia. “The new dock will increase our ability to service the local and international shipping industry by 60%. This is in support of Namport’s (the Namibian government’s Ports Authority) plans of increasing container trade in the region,” Uys notes. Namport is EBH Namibia’s main shareholder, with the balance of shares having been acquired in 2012 by the DCD Group (making EBH Namibia part of the DCD Marine cluster of companies). “The significance of the arrival of the third dock cannot be overestimated in terms of job creation and skills development in Namibia, as well as economic growth in the region” Uys says. “Since its inception in 2006, EBH Namibia has contributed an estimated N$1.3 billion to the Namibian economy.” The commissioning of a floating dock the size of the Panamax does not come without its logistical challenges, however. Willie Esterhuyse, Commercial Manager at EBH Namibia, explains: “Having been out of operation for almost three years, the dock required preparation work to ensure safe delivery to Namibia. This included the replacement of approximately 200 tons of steel which were carried out in Batam, Indonesia. The newly refurbished dock left
Batam on 18 April 2013, but bad weather meant that the arrival has been delayed by almost 30 days.” The commissioning of the dock in port, scheduled for September 2013, entails four dimensions, according to Esterhuyse. All work will be carefully planned to ensure a minimum impact on current operations. “The first dimension is the preparation of the site, which includes the placement of the mooring blocks, dredging, moving Namdock 1 to her new position and placing Namdock 3 in her new position. This process is well underway and simultaneously the remobilisation of all equipment, such as cranes, pumps, valves and the offloading of the floating crane has to be carried out in the main port. The third and fourth is the continuation of the repairs carried out in Batam and the training of our dock operational staff.” A project of this magnitude requires enormous skills input, as Uys points out. “One of our greatest challenges is a shortage of skills. While employees will be incorporated into the project as and when required, we will be embarking on an active recruitment drive, as well as implementing skills exchange programmes with international shipyards, and mentorship training.” He estimates that the project will create around 150 job opportunities, the majority of which will be offered to local residents. “This is a very exciting phase in EBH Namibia’s history. We believe that the arrival of the third dry dock will greatly increase our capacity to offer a complete service and enhance the port of Walvis Bay – and Namibia - as a global player in the ship repair industry,” he concludes.

Second Fish Consumption Day
to be Launched in Omaheke Region token of thanks to Walvis Bay business mogul, Mr John Savva, who generously sponsored N$ 90 000 to the Trust. Savva donated an additional N$50 000, which he announced upon receiving the token of thanks for his previous donation. According to Mr Amadhila, Deputy Chairman of the NFCPT the N$ 90 000.00 went towards purchasing much needed computers. Upon arrival at the Business breakfast, each fishing industry stakeholder received a magnetic fish, which
they later learned had to be used to pledge that they will support the Fish Consumption Day in Gobabis by exhibiting their fish related products and help promote fish consumption. Each of the business representatives went up to the front of the conference room to place their magnetic fish on the under-the-sea picture board, pledging to take part in the exhibition day, September in Gobabis.

The Namibian Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT), recently launched the date for their second official Fish Consumption day during a business breakfast held at Pelican Bay Protea Hotel. This will be held in September and hosted at Gobabis, in the Omaheke Region. The Namibian Fish Consumption Day will be celebrated from 9 – 14 September 2013 in Gobabis, by means of a Roadshow to various schools within the Region to promote the consumption of fish, a Gala Dinner on Friday the 13th, a Market Day and a Music concert on
Saturday the 14th. “As you are aware that the National Fish Consumption Day is initiated with the main purpose to focus on education surrounding the preparation of different fish cuisines, the healthy benefits of consuming fish and the fact that the NFCPT’s mandate to educate the public on the role of the (NFCPT) and create more visibility for the fishing industry as a whole,” the Minister of Fisheries, Bernard Esau announced in a letter to Captains of the Fishing Industry and Fishing Related Stakeholders. Transport Sector
Fights HIV Picture curtesy of WBCG

Mobile Wellness Van Clementine Aweses “Long distance truck drivers traversing the trade corridors in the SADC regions are vulnerable to HIV infection due to the nature of their work,” stated Edward Shivute, Project Manager Wellness Services for Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG), at the Pan African Parliament workshop last week in Walvis Bay. Shivute told delegates that the work of long distance drivers is tracked on a time-bound schedule, which leaves the drivers with very little or no time to visit clinics. He said that of the 2800 drivers using the Walvis Bay Ndola - Lumbumbashi Corridor, Trans-Caprivi Corridor, as well as the Trans-Kunene Corridor who went for HIV testing, 580 tested positive. Long-distance truck drivers’ vulnerability is influenced by social, economic and sometimes political factors. Shivute also said the drivers’ increasing cross-border travels expose them to high-risk sexual encounters in situations where they have limited access to health facilities. Due to HIV infections, the transport sector looses
skilled drivers, resulting in lack of capacity. Of concern is the low and inconsistent use of condoms by the long-distance drivers. The WBCG has established HIV testing and counseling centres in Katima Mulilo, Oshikango and Walvis Bay. Shivute said the group uses a multi-channel approach to reach individuals as well as groups. Truckers are reached through programme channels that include interaction with peer educators and community mobilisers, who give demonstrations on condom and lubricants use. Other interventions use include group and individual sessions held at border posts, wellness centers, truck stops and workplaces, issuing CDs on HIV/AIDS Behaviour Change that drivers can listen to when driving. The WBCG later adopted “a mixed model approach” with a principle of combining static wellness centres, mobile wellness clinics facilities with on-site HIV/AIDS testing and wellness/workplace interventions. This approach resulted in a high uptake of HIV counseling and testing for truckers at the wellness centers while on the road.

Cross Border Cheques Soon No Longer Accepted FNB Namibia recently announced, once again, that effective from 22 July 2013, all cross-border cheques and ZAR bank drafts will no longer be accepted by banks in
Namibia. Albert Mutonga Matongela, Manager National Payments Operations at FNB Namibia, advised that this decision came about as a
result of the implementation of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Integrated Regional Electronic Settlement System known as SIRESS which
comes into effect on 23 July 2013. Matongela explains: “The change is being implemented because of the relatively low usage of these paper instruments, the high inherent risk, the inefficiency of such instruments and the availability of suitable electronic alternatives for cross-border payments and money transfers. The available alternative methods of payment include the use of credit cards, Banks’ electronic platforms and electronic transfers made by Banks on behalf of their clients".
FNB Namibia has advised that individuals and companies who wish to make payments from one country to another will have to use electronic transfer channels as from 23 July. “Electronic payments are quicker and safer, and their increasing use shows that they have become the preferred payment channel,” says Matongela. With less than two weeks to go, the process of phasing out of cross border Cheques and ZAR (Rand) Drafts is almost completed.

Namport Grapples with Rapid Growth Clementine Aweses The Namibia Ports Authority will embark on multi-billion dollar expansion projects to keep abreast of the rapid growth of cargo coming through the corridors and Walvis Bay. Namport’s mega projects include the new N$3.2 billion container terminal that will be constructed on 40 hectares of reclaimed land, the SADC Gateway Port, and a N$20 billion Walvis Bay North Port. Addressing members of the media on Tuesday, Chief Executive Officer Bisey /Uirab said Namport has over the years grown not to serve only Namibia but the entire SADC region. He explained that only 20% of the business handled by Walvis Bay Port is from Namibia while the bulk comes from the SADC countries and countries along the West coast of Africa. /Uirab however dismissed the misconception that Namport is a monopoly. “Many people think that we are a monopoly but that is not the case, as our competition is all over Africa. The business
services that we provide can equally be provided by someone in Angola, someone in Dar Es Salaam or by someone in Durban, therefore people who think that Namport is a monopoly are not correct. Our Namibian population is two million people and Namport, specifically the port of Walvis Bay, does not only serve the people of Namibia. We serve the entire SADC mission with 257 million people. Therefore we see ourself as a player on the African continent and we want to be the best.” /Uirab said Namport will implement various strategic interventions that have been adopted to achieve its goal of providing world class port services. The winning formula will include increasing capacity so that the port will be able to handle more cargo, widening and growing Namport’s customer base and diversifying the products and services it can offer its customers. Namport will also focus on improving port efficiencies by continuously improving the quality of service. /Uirab
DO GREAT THINGS
said there is a need to uphold good corporate governance and be known for transparency. Namport further focuses on being responsive to customer needs and openness when dealing with the media and the people of Namibia. “We will ensure that all good corporate governance policies are put in place and that our people get the best.” He also said Namport is a company in transition, which must continue to transform and include everyone in the transformation. Namport, /Uirab said, places great value on its human capital investment and the organisation is considering introducing multi-shifts so that employees work shorter hours, give more work, and perform tasks more efficiently. “We are also looking at improving the skills of our people. We have recently introduced training to ensure that all the key skills are being upgraded, retrained, and new people are brought in and trained.” Namport, from the beginning of this year, started training its own marine pilots locally as well as in the Netherlands and South Africa. /Uirab said the programme is aimed at keeping Namport in sync with providing world class standard service, providing best practices, increasing productivity and sustaining its Walvis Bay North Port operations.

Gymnastics On a Roll
gymnasts and other coaches, he brought along Lisa, who agreed to showcase what could be done with a Wheel. Lisa competes in all three categories on the Wheel, namely Straight, Spiral and Vault, and has already thought about returning to Namibia to teach Wheel Gymnastics. “Currently, there are 84 more Wheels
waiting to be shipped over here, but we are in dire need of funds and appreciate any help towards getting this style of gymnastics going here in Namibia,” Frank concludes. Anybody wanting to find out more about Wheel Gymnastics or willing to help in getting Wheels to Namibia should please contact Frank at info@ktv-ran.de or on 081 385 9908.
Swakop Hosts 2013 Africa Public Service Day Celebrations Ivan Andrei Blazic Yesterday, people watching the inter-school gymnastics competition at the Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club (WBCG) were amazed when they were introduced to a new style of gymnastics. Lisa Rohde performed some skilful manoeuvres on a Gymnastics Wheel, which, along with two other Wheels, was donated by Frank Schneising from Germany. The Gymnastics Wheel, also known as Rhönrad or
German Wheel, consists of two rings connected by six bars (two simple ones, two to stand on and two to hold on to). It was invented in Germany in 1925 by Otto Feick and can vary in size so that the gymnast is almost fully stretched out once inside. Introducing the coast to Wheel Gymnastics now seems very fitting, considering that the 10th Wheel Gymnastics World Championship is being held this very week in Chicago, Illinois. The idea to bring Wheels to
Namibia came up last year when the WBCG team visited Frank’s club near Koblenz, Germany. Having never seen a Gymnastics Wheel before, the Namibian youngsters were eager to try it out and surprised Frank with their raw talent. “What I saw back then was mindboggling,” says Frank. “I had to get some Wheels over here.” However, no-one in Namibia actually knows how to do Wheel Gymnastics, so this year, when Frank returned to Namibia with a few
Ernstine Schweiger The 2013 Africa Public Service Day was celebrated under the theme ‘Africa Public Service in the Age of Open Government - Giving Voice to Citizens’ in Swakopmund from Wednesday to Friday, last week. The Africa Public Service Day has been celebrated in Namibia since 2001. The event has always been celebrated in Windhoek, but in 2010 it was decided to take the event to other regions. On Friday the event started with a parade by the Navy, members of the Namibian Police Force and Civil servants who marched through the streets of the town to the Swakopmund stadium, where the main activities took place. The Governor of the Erongo Region, Cleophas Mutjavikua, welcomed all guests and introduced the keynote speaker of the event, Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku. In his address the Deputy Minister said that Africa faces many challenges such as poor infrastructure, poverty and global marginalisation. He reminded Public/Civil servants that it is imperative to reflect on the function of the public/civil service, its mission, objectives, programmes/ projects, successes and challenges. The Deputy Minister also added that it is important to motivate and encourage public servants to continue the good work done and to introduce new initiatives and prepare the public service and administration for a better future. He added that all citizens deserve and rightly expect good quality services, and said that citizens want to see the public sector, working in partnership
with non-governmental, community-based organisations and the private sector, to improve their quality of life. Citizens are faced with challenges in accessing information from public/ civil service institutions, as a result of the weaknesses in paper-based records management systems, and the myths associated with the oaths of secrecy and confidentiality. Thus they are demanding, more than ever before, accountability, transparency and integrity from their governments and public/civil sector officials and authorities. Namibia has come a long way in developing and implementing an operational framework to monitor accountability, but needs to do more to ensure that the enabling statutes of compliance are adhered to and that these include practical checklists, decisionmaking tools, and options based on good practice. “We can however only avoid failure in our efforts if all public/civil servants receive the required training and mentoring in these areas, to ensure their full appreciation and understanding of the issues involved,” the Minister added. Deputy Minister Hausiku also reiterated the Governments’ commitment to promote an enabling environment and mechanisms, to enhance citizen participation in public policy making and implementation processes. This day will rotate annually to foster greater ownership, support and appreciation for the work of Public/Civil Service. The event was concluded with a special lunch for all the guests at the Swakopmund Sport Stadium.

Only 74 Bottlenose Dolphins Left in Namibian Waters Dr Simon Elwin
The Angling Club, situated next to the Pelican Bay hotel, hosted a talk by Dr Simon Elwin last week Thursday. He spoke about the research he and his colleagues have been doing on the humpback whales and various dolphin species that run along the coastline from South Africa all the way up to Gabon. In his presentation Dr Elwin discussed the methods they use in tracking the animals, and the information they have collected by conducting these studies. Some of the conclusions they reached through their research were that Bottlenose Dolphins become more sociable when boats are around. This hasn't been seen in any other dolphin species. He also spoke about the various impacts the animals face and how it could force them to move away. He then displayed the various endangered species on a list and showed how many of them were left in the wild. There are 2500 Namibian cheetahs, 750 South African cheetahs, 1750 Namibian Black Rhinos, 469 Namibian White Rhinos, 800 Desert Elephants, 562 Lions, 96 Desert Lions and only 74 Bottlenose Dolphins left in Namibia, which Dr Elwin says is probably the smallest population of any animal in Southern Africa.

KLD Lends a Hand to Walvis SPCA
KLD Ships’ Agency gave a helping hand to Walvis Bay SPCA by donating a much needed washing machine and tumble dryer. “We purchased a large washing machine and a tumble dryer and had it delivered to the SPCA. They expressed a need for a second hand washing machine to help them keep the many blankets clean and fresh for the animals. We thought that a large machine will assist them in washing a couple of blankets at a time and the tumble dryer will ensure that the blankets can dry if the weather conditions are foggy and wet,” said Katja Glöditzsch from KLD. “Nictus delivered the machine and our guys from KLD went to do the official hand-over. When they got there on Friday afternoon, the machines were both running and the team at SPCA were extremely grateful. They are doing such a great job for the animals and the place is clean and fresh and the animals get walked and exercised so we felt that they really deserved some help to make their job a little easier,” Katja concluded.

anywhere quickly due to the fact that they trudge along so slowly and they stop traffic when they are turning and reversing. About five years ago, it would take me about 20 minutes to drive from Walvis Bay to Swakopmund, but these days it can take me almost 45 minutes to an hour to do so because of all these trucks. I really hope something can be done about this situation.
I’m writing this regarding an article you published in your last issue date 4 July – 10 July concerning your article titled “One Huge Truck up!”. For as long as I can remember, we have had trucks coming and going from Walvis Bay, that’s nothing new, but lately it seems to have increased tenfold! I understand that there are complications when it comes to building a truck port, but we can’t go on like this, Regards the trucks make it very difficult to get Mr Juan Volkman

Dear Namib Independent After reading your article on the GMO food situation, I felt compelled to write this letter. I am glad that the government is only issuing import permits for non-genetically modified seeds because I think that GMO foods are very very bad for our health. Not only are they potentially hazardous to our health, but they are unnatural. Food is perfect just the way it is, that is how nature intended it to be, but then we came along and started tampering with it to try and make it better, but by doing so, we have altered their structures genetically which could have negative effects on us. I think that further studies should be conducted on these foods to see what exactly they are doing to us and if they really are a better alternative to non-genetically modified food. Not just a girl… So my amazing daughter, Emma, turned five last month, and I had been searching everywhere for new, creative inspiration for her five year pictures. I noticed quite a pattern of so many young girls dressing up as beautiful Disney
susan R. anthony "...Forget conventionalism; forget what the world thinks of you stepping out of your place; think your best thoughts, speak your best words, work your best works, looking to your own conscience for approval. I had rather... make history than write it. Failure is impossible."
Princesses, no matter where I looked, 95% of the “ideas” were the “How to’s” of how to dress your little girl like a Disney Princess. Now don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Disney Princesses, from their beautiful dresses, perfect hair, gorgeous voices and most with ideal love stories in the mix you can’t help but become entranced with the characters. But it got me thinking, they’re just characters, a writer's tale of a princess (most before 1998)…an unrealistic fantasy for most girls (Yay Kate Middleton!). It started me thinking about all the REAL women for my daughter to know about and look up to, REAL women who, without ever meeting Emma, have changed her life for the better. My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters. I wanted her to know the value of these amazing women who had gone against everything so she can now have everything. We chose five women (five amazing and strong women), as it was her 5th birthday, but there are thousands of unbelievable
coco chanel
women (and girls) who have beat the odds and fought (and still fight) for their equal rights all over the world…….so let’s set aside the Barbie Dolls and the Disney Princesses for just a moment, and let’s show our girls the REAL women they can be.

"My family has very strong women. My mother never laughed at my dream of Africa, even though everyone else did because we don't have any money, because Africa was the 'dark continent", and because I was a girl. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."

"...Now and then women should do for themselves what men have already done - occasionally what men have not done - thereby establishing themselves as persons, and perhaps encouraging other women toward greater independence of thought and action. World Population Day 2013
The world population has reached 7 billion people. This milestone inspired us to conduct research to update our statistics, and the changes over the past few years are remarkable. Here are some fast facts and statistics to show what is going on in the world:
2 would speak Russian, 2 would speak Japanese, and 62 would speak other languages.
There would be 60 Asians, 15 Africans, 14 people from the Americas and 11 Europeans. 33 would be Christians, 22 would be Muslims, 14 would be Hindus and 7 would be Buddhists. 12 people would practice other religions and 12 people would not be aligned with any religion.
87 would have access to safe drinking water, while 13 people would have no clean, safe water to drink.
83 would be able to read and write; 17 would not. 7 would have a college degree, 22 would own or share a computer. If the World were 100 77 people would have a place to shelter them from the wind PEOPLE: and the rain, 50 would be female, but 23 would not. 50 would be male. There would be 26 children 1 would be dying of starvation, and 74 adults, 15 would be undernourished 8 of whom would be 65 years and 21 people would be and older. overweight.
12 would speak Chinese, 5 would speak Spanish, 5 would speak English, 3 would speak Arabic, 3 would speak Hindi, 3 would speak Bengali, 3 would speak Portuguese,

2013 Theme: Focus is on Adolescent Pregnancy As the world population edged to 7 billion people in 2011 (up from 2.5 billion in 1950), it has had profound implications for development. A world of 7 billion is both a challenge and an opportunity with implications on sustainability, urbanisation, access to health services and youth empowerment. In 1989, in its decision 89/46, the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme recommended that, in order to focus
attention on the urgency and importance of population issues in the context of overall development plans and programmes and the need to find solutions for these issues, 11 July should be observed by the international community as World Population Day. About 16 million girls under age 18 give birth each year. Another 3.2 million undergo unsafe abortions. The vast majority – 90 per cent -- of the pregnant adolescents in the developing world are married.
But for far too many of these girls, pregnancy has little to do with informed choice. Often it is a consequence of discrimination, rights violations (including child marriage), inadequate education or sexual coercion. On 2013 World Population Day, we raise awareness of the issue of adolescent pregnancy in the hopes of delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe, and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

In their honeymoon suite on their wedding night. As they undressed for bed, the husband, who was a big burly man, tossed his pants to his bride and said, “here put these on.” She said “I can’t wear your pants.” “That’s right!!” said the husband, “and don’t you forget it. I’m the man who wears the pants in this family!” With that she flipped him her panties and said, “Try these on.” He tried them on and found he could only get them on as far as his kneecaps. He said, “Hell, I can’t get into your panties!” She said, “That’s right, and that’s the way it’s going to be until you change your attitude.”

m O shiwa bo MO T ORmING Jaguar’s Little Monster Machine Jaguar F-type V8 S 0-100 km/h 4.3 sec Top speed 300 Km/h Engine V8 5000cc supercharged Power 364 Kw at 6500rpm Torque 625 Nm at 2500 - 5500rpm Gearbox 8 speed auto What is it? As the fastest, most powerful, most expensive model within the new Jaguar F-type range and looking all but identical to the lesser versions, it’s a proper old-school hotrod and no mistake. Like all the other F-types, the 5.0 litre V8 S, sits on a rear-wheel-drive aluminium chassis that features all-round double wishbone suspension, plus the same basic cabin architecture from which to survey the world. It has the same electric hood as the lesser models (12sec up or down), the same driving position, the same decently sized boot (200 litres) and even the same multi-function steering wheel (available with either a flat bottom in Alcantara or rounded and in leather, which is nice). But in most respects, that’s where the similarities between the V8 S F-type and the V6s end. For although there’s the same eightspeed Quickshift gearbox through which to deploy the V8’s thunderous extra power and torque (364 Kw and 561 Nm), it feels like a completely different animal on the road. Partly this is because that’s the way Jaguar wants it to feel, hence the reason there’s an electronic diff (rather than a mechanical limited slip diff as in the Jaguar F-type V6 S) in order to manage the V8’s extra flow of power. But at the same time there are also bigger brakes, 20in wheels, quad exhausts and a yet more sophisticated Dynamic Drive system that allows you to fine-tune the steering weight, throttle response, gearchange speeds and even the exhaust noise. All of which endow the V8 S with a very different personality on the move. What is it like? There’s a monumental step up in performance from a V6 F-type when you ensconce yourself in the V8 S. The noise it makes is totally different and the response from its power steering is also meatier. Even its body shell shimmies slightly when you press the throttle, as do those of all the finest hotrods. But it’s what happens when you put your foot down in the V8 F-type, preferably with a lowish gear engaged, and ideally on a quiet and straight ribbon of road, that
distinguishes this car as The Superior Being. The way it accelerates is frankly brutal and maybe even a little bit scary to begin with, to the point where I believe that some customers may find it a touch too much. In which case they’ll need to go away and learn their craft behind the wheel of an entry-level Jaguar F-type V6 instead. For the truly unhinged enthusiast, though, the V8 S is the only F-type to have. Jaguar reckons it’ll do 0-160 km/h in 8.9sec, which is deeply quick. But the way it thunders towards the horizon at the merest prod of throttle in any of the first five gears makes it feel quicker, even, than such a number would suggest. The response from its 5.0-litre V8 engine is fantastic. If you didn’t know it was supercharged, you’d never guess. But it’s the way the acceleration keeps on coming at you, keeps on pummeling you in the kidneys as every rev is added, that makes the V8 seem so seductive, so addictive, so much more appealing at its core than either of the merely fast V6s. The way the gearbox picks off ratios so efficiently when you short-shift is also delicious, as is the amount of traction on offer with the new E-diff switched to Normal (although having said that, massive tail slides can also be delivered at will if you switch it off). And the sound it makes is epic: a deep rumble below 2000rpm that rises through a satanic roar between 2000 and 4500rpm, before finishing in a very loud, very lovely scream between 5000rpm and the redline. It’s the sort of car you climb out of after a decent thrash across a good road, glad still to be in one piece, heart thumping, mind fizzing with adrenalin. In many ways it reminds me of the most sorted TVR that there ever was, and I mean that entirely as a compliment. Should I buy one? If you can afford one, the answer is a very big yes. The fast, loud, expensive and downright raucous Jaguar F-type V8 S won’t appeal to everyone in the market for a sports car (although initial orders suggest that it’s accounting for some 40 per cent of overall interest) but to those who want the biggest bang possible for their buck, the F-type V8 S

MGS Group Namibian Closed Ellies Walvis Bay Squash Championships
Fought Hard But Lost
Buccaneers Squash Club hosted the MGS Group Namibian Closed over the weekend of the 28th-30th June and must be commended for the efficient manner in which it was handled. All the players were impressed at how well it was organised and how smooth things ran. Special thanks to MGS Group for their generous sponsorship, without which it would not have been possible to attract such a good entry. A total of 58 entries was received and split up as follows; a 16 Men’s A Cup Draw, 34 Men’s B Draw and an 8 Ladies' Cup Draw. The tournament was superb; with the top players all closely matched they provided the spectators with some spectacular and entertaining squash. The Men’s A Final was a clash between, Norbert Dorgeloh [Wanderers] and Danie Greeff
[Buccaneers]. It was a terrific final, which proved how much Danie’s game has improved over the last couple of years. Norbet’s extra experience gave him a slight edge in the match, but none-the-less he had to play his best to lift the 2013 Namibian Closed trophy with a great 3-1 win. The Ladies final was between Buccaneers players, Jenny Pahl and Lucinda Rodrigues. Jenny proved why she is the top dog at the coast and took the 2013 title and trophy with a 3-0 victory. In the playoffs for the 3rd positions; Michael van Lingen [Buccaneers] beat Trevor Grane [Buccaneers] in the Men’s section and Christiana Beulker [SFC] beat Chantal de Gouveia [Buccaneers] in the Ladies section. Other results were: Men’s A Plate – Imanuel Amorongo [Buccaneers] bt Emil
[Buccaneers]. Men’s B Section – Cecil Humphries [Wanderers] bt Max Enjala [Wanderers] Men’s B Consolation Cup – Leslie Bosman [Buccaneers] bt Andre Huisamen [Buccaneers] Men’s B Plate – Raymond Duvenhage [Buccaneers] bt Poena Olivier [Buccaneers]. Men’s B Consolation Plate – Roland Ludwig [Klein Windhoek] bt Clifford Steyn [Klein Windhoek] Garyth Ditchfield of MGS Group attended the finals and presented the Trophies and prizes to the players at the prize giving after play. All in all it was a great weekend with superb sportsmanship and camaraderie. Buccs made sure the visitors had a good time and hopefully a memorable tournament. Keep on squashing and see you at the Namibian Open in Windhoek.
Ellies Walvis Bay travelled to Windhoek to play against log leaders Western Suburbs on their home ground. Only the first team travelled to Windhoek beccause the second team withdrew due to a long injury list. Suburbs came at Ellies Walvis with guns blazing. With the quick pace of the match in the first 15 minutes of the match Ellies Walvis I was trailing and made a comeback to close the difference to within two converted tries. All three tries were converted by Jeroen van Dam as well as a penalty kick to bring Ellies Walvis Bay’s score to 24-69. The MD of Ellies Namibia said that he was very impressed with the fighting spirit of Ellies Walvis Bay. This weekend Ellies Walvis Bay will be hosting Rehoboth Rugby Club at the Jan Wilcken. Match starts at 13h00. An English touring team will be playing two matches against De Duine. Matches will start at 10h30. All are welcome to come and watch some exiting rugby.
