Train Crashes into Fuel Tanker Tanya Calitz Monday around 9:30 am a diesel tanker crossing the railway line in Walvis Bay, Hanna Mupetani Street, was hit by a TransNamib train coming into town. The train hit the back of the truck and swung it on its side. The truck suffered terrible damage and had dents and bumps all over. The front of the truck was also badly damaged with diesel running from one of the tankers. According to authorities on the scene the truck driver allegedly ignored the warning lights in front of the railway crossing, and crossed the

tracks despite seeing the fast approaching train. According to an employee of the hazardous management team cleaning up the oil spill at the scene the tanker lost about 7000 litres of diesel on the road. The driver of the truck sustained only minor injuries and was taken to the hospital by St Gabriel Ambulance Trust. Earlier this year the same company, Northern Fuel Distributors, suffered another incident when one of their trucks crashed on its side at the circle at Walvis Bay entrance. In that incident the damage in terms of fuel lost was a lot more than this one. Continued on Page 3

vehicle, first speeding into a signpost, lost control and swerved over the road, till they eventually left the road, and crashed into a palm tree. An officer on the scene of the accident said that it appeared that the deceased was not wearing his safety belt and was flung from the vehicle. The vehicle was found approximately 60 meters from the road, in the desert. A second memorial service will be held for Kenny this Friday at a private house in Narraville.

In yesterday’s incident the diesel was pumped from the tanker into another tanker, before Walvis Bay Plant and Tool Hire lifted the truck back onto its wheels. They made use of the 80ton and 100 ton cranes to get the tanker back on its wheels. One crane was used to stabilise the truck and the other one was used to lift it. By the time of going to press, Northern Fuel Distributors could not be reached for comment on the incident.

Shoprite and PEP Come to Arandis

Arandis Town Council CEO Florida Husselmann flanked by the Mayor Councilor Daniel Utapi. Muhuura(left) and Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Tjekero Tweya

Clementine Aweses Arandis Town Council chief executive officer, Florida Husselmann has applauded the opening up of Shoprite U-Save supermarket and PEP store in the town. Husselmann said the initiative gained momentum after the first Investment Conference in 2011 and the second

weather

Investment Conference and Expo strengthened the viability of the project. “This is a development that was already identified as critical for the economy of Arandis in 2005. The absence of proper retail facilities has led to a flight of money out of Arandis, thus negatively impacting the economic growth and support to local businesses in the town. “Arandis is a proclaimed town with more than 6,500 inhabitants and needs to cater for the basic needs of its residents. Thus, this development will really serve as a catalyst for future development initiatives,” Husselmann said in a statement to the Namib Independent.. She said the mayor benefit from the two investments is their contribution to the economic growth of the town and the shops are attracting customers as far as Usakos. Husselmann said, that thus further gives Council the opportunity to strengthen its marketing objective in promoting Arandis as a centre of growth and a town of choice and it positions Arandis as a viable business centre

within the Erongo Region. Husselmann also said the residents of Arandis no longer have to travel to Swakopmund to do shopping. “They can do it locally and save on transport cost. It also creates a sense of belonging, spiral visible growth and residents are taking pride in their town.” Sarita van Wyk, Shoprite Manager for Corporate Communications said, Shoprite Namibia decided to invest in the town because of its strategic location and increased economic activity from mining companies. “The store opened in May this year and brings consumers lower prices than the rest of the existing traders on a range of basic groceries, general merchandise and fresh fruit and vegetables. The store is proving to be very popular with consumers,” van Wyk said. The opening of the branch created employment for 15 permanent staff. In sync with its slogan “Sikhula KunYe!” (We Are Growing Together) PEP Stores like Shoprite has jumped onto the growing Arandis investment

Mr Gay Namibia

to Represent the Coast in Belgium Tanya Calitz Mr Gay Namibia, Ricardo Amunjera will be representing the coast and our country at the Mr Gay World Event at the end of the month in Belgium. Ricardo won the Mr Gay Namibia title last year, and has since prepared for the Mr Gay World competition, which will be taking place from the 31 July till the 5 August in Antwerp. There are 33 contestants, with only two rivals from Africa, South Africa being the other country. Ricardo said that a lot of hard work had gone into the preparation for the competition. “I did a lot of gym training and healthy eating, but the aspect I focused on most was keeping up to date on the current events and issues from around the work and sharpening up my general knowledge,” Ricardo shared with the Namib Independent over a cup of coffee at Probst. Ricardo says that he is very excited about the competition and feels ready. “I have put a lot of work into it and have wonderful support from my family, friends and life partner, Marc (whom he married in South Africa earlier this year),” he said. “I reckon my biggest rival and competition at the Mr Gay World event will be Mexico,”

Ricardo said. There will be contestants from all over the world, including the Philippines, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Australia, Canada and many more. Ricardo said that he thinks this competition will be good positive exposure to Namibia, and that it might help fight the prejudice against gayness in the country. “In general Namibia is very accepting of all its people, but some justify their hatred towards gayness and other difference by hiding behind ‘tradition’, Ricardo said. Ricardo currently resides on the coast and works at Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine as a Geological Supervisor. According Ricardo his colleagues all support and encouraged him. Ricardo said as part of the competition they will go on a Human Rights Summit and also do some charity work. Ricardo said that this year the public vote will count a lot, so supporters can go and vote for him on Twitter and Facebook. The person with the most votes will win the ‘People’s Choice’ Award. The Mr Gay World Competition was held in South Africa last year, and will be taking place in the ‘world’s gayest city’, Atwerp, along with the World Outgames.

Chaos and Mayhem Over DRC Informal Resettlement

Caroline Kambonga In a meeting between Democratic Resettlement Community (DRC) residents and other parties concerned on Sunday, it has been alleged that the Swakopmund Municipality has been dishonest for more than ten years on the formalisation of the DRC. “I strongly feel that the municipality have not been honest with us about the formalisation of our community for many years now, and that they do not put all the cards on the table,” said, 60-year-old Olga Kandukira, a resident of DRC at the meeting. “The Swakopmund municipality was planning N$53 million for the DRC formalisation, but the figure dropped to N$25,5 million, says the Deputy Secretary of the Concern group, Laidlow Periganda. He also stated that the DRC will never be formalised. It was alleged that the formalisation of the DRC should have started this year in May, at the last meeting which was held with the Mayor, Juuso Kambueshe earlier this year. The Chief Executive Officer of the Swakopmund Municipality, Eckhart Demasius, stated that N$600 million is needed for the formalisation of the DRC. According to the DRC residents, ‘The Planning Committee’ group of people elected by the Mayor of Swakopmund, to represent the community of the DRC to Council is failing. “They are supposed to be responsible for creating communication between the two parties, but to us, here in the settlement, it seems that the committee

is not doing their work,” an irate resident at the meeting stressed. In the interim, the residents of the DRC decided to create their own Committee and elected a group of people called the ‘Concern Group’ which consists of 15 non-political members. This too has now become a controversial topic and Mayor Kambueshe stated that he is concerned about this new group. “I feel that this new group is and will only be creating more problems and cause trouble in the long run. I know that there are people out there who do not like me, but these people must know that I’m not the Mayor forever. I know who they are and that they are out to sabotage us. I’m not afraid of them,” Kambueshe said in an address. The ‘Concern Group’ members claim that the Swakop Mayor is going to take hard action towards them, as they are sabotaging the development of the DRC and according to an article that appeared in one of the dailies, on 7 May 2013, the former Mayor Rosina// Hoabes has never threatened the group and they have been around for 3 years when she was serving as Mayor. The Concern Group members feel that this relationship has been ruined with the new Mayor in town. On 22 May 2013 the ‘Concern Group’ wrote a letter to the Erongo Regional Governor stating that they want his Worship Mayor, Juuso Kambueshe to apologise to them for making threats and bashing them, but The Governor’s Office has not yet responded to their request. In the meeting, Mayor Kambueshe said that he would like to see the ‘Concern Group’ and the

However, the Concern Group claim that they are more than willing to, but it is the other group that is not playing along.“We called for a meeting on 4 May this year, but the ‘Planning Committee’ didn’t show up” said David Nghiimbwasha, President of the ‘Concern Group’. The DRC residents want to dissolve the Planning Committee as they have 2000 names of DRC residents who don’t agree with the Planning Committee. This time the DRC residents are planning a demonstration in August.”I will not vote this next election," says Jacky Araeb, and we will not move. It doesn’t help, they just want to be voted in, after they get their titles then they sit back and relax while we are suffering.” ”There are laws and regulations, why will I want to work with people that want to sabotage the law”, says Juuso Kambueshe, "let us rather work together", he said.

Namsov Training Empower Women Clementine Aweses Thirteen women attended a weeklong Early Childhood Development Workshop at the Namsov training centre in Kuisebmund. Herbert Mtowo, training facilitator at Namsov, told the Namib Independent that the just ended training workshop was a follow-up to another one that was held in April in support of Government’s call to empower women working with young children. Mtowo said the training integrated early childhood development to teach the participants how to deal with ,and understand better, the behaviour of young children who are orphaned following the death of one or both parents, who are separated from parents

This week in Coastal History 19 July 1897 Major Theodor Leutwein, leader of the military force in the Territory, is informed by Imperial Germany of the Government's intention to build a railway line of 80 km from Swakopmund into the hinterland. The line was to extend to an area where there was grazing. 20 July 1911 The tug Windhuk, belonging to the Woermann shipping line, sinks in stormy waters near Swakopmund. Three passengers drown in the incident while another four, who are washed overboard, are saved. 20 July 1923 The Walvis Bay Whaling Company brings in a catch of six whales. 21 July 2001 The Multi-Purpose Centre at Kuisebmond, Walvis Bay, is officially opened. The Municipality built the Centre with funding from the US Department of Defence and other donors. It offers, among others, a range of HIV/AIDS services, including those related to those living with AIDS, home based care, counselling and peer education, as well as legal assistance programmes and recreational and cultural activities to the wider community. 22 July 2009 Hangana Seafood at Walvis Bay introduces a fuel blending system that could transform fuel standards and costs for the fishing industry and other major fuel-consumption industries in Namibia. The "on-shore in-line fuel blending station" is a N$35 million innovation that has resulted in a cheaper and environmentally "greener" fuel than heavy fuel oil (HFO), which most vessels use, blended to customer specification, and will soon be available to the entire marine industry. This innovation is the first of its kind in Namibia. 24 July 1844 The Cape Legislative Assembly passes a law to affirm annexation of Walvis Bay in 1878 by Richard Dyer. 24 July 1915 The first two customs officials are appointed at Walvis Bay Harbour. Illegal Fish Dumpers Pay N$ 1 Million Fine Tanya Calitz

The Chinese Vessel MFV Leader L – 1330 paid a fine of N$ 1 million into the State Revenue Fund, after they were found guilty of illegally dumping fish into Namibian waters. The Captain, Liu Shunyang of the horse mackerel vessel from the company Atlantic Pacific Fishing (Pty) Ltd, was initially issued with a fine of N$1200 for admission of guilt, but the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Recourses re-assessed the case and lodged an investigation into the matter. According to Fisheries Minister Bernard Esau, the Ministry had obtained and gathered information relating to the unsustainable harvesting of marine resources by the suspected vessel, by dumping fish through some special designed escape channel of iron pipes which was purposely cut open to divert crushed fish meal products back to sea. “Government then commenced with the process of investigating the alleged contraventions and preparing for prosecution. On 5 June 2013, the Fisheries Ministry as complainant in the criminal case at Walvis Bay Regional Court, and which the Ministry has reported to the Namibian Police in terms of Regulation 39 took place,” Minister Esau said. According to Esau, as it turned out the Ministry did not necessarily have to continue

with the criminal prosecution. Atlantic Pacific Fishing fully cooperated with the investigation of Nampol, Fisheries Ministry and the Office of the Prosecutor-General and the Office of the Attorney General. The parties involved have recognised that a mutual beneficial commercial settlement as opposed to the criminal cases, would be in the best interest of the parties and the industry. According to Minister Esau, the fishing company then approached the Government for an out of court settlement, which they have agreed to. “We as Government, having satisfied ourselves that the interest of justice will be served, that the decision would be in the best interest of the fishing industry, were able to advance justification to the ProsecutorGeneral for her to reconsider her decision to prosecute, which she has, and I therefore announce today that the Government will no longer be pursuing criminal charges,” Esau announced late last week. According to Esau the Government has agreed to the out of court settlement to avoid a long battle in court which can take as long as three years to settle. He also said that after taking all aspects into consideration, and receiving professional and legal input they have agreed to settle for the amount of N$ 1 million. The Chief Control Inspector for

the Ministry of Fisheries, Peter Schivute also said at the meeting that Captain, Liu Shunyang is no longer welcome to work in the Namibian Fishing industry or sail in its waters. “He can come back as a tourist if he likes, but he is no longer welcome in this industry,” Schivute said. The Ministry also sent out a clear message that such incidents and criminal acts will not be tolerated. “We do not condone any violations of the license, quotas, regulations and fishing rights conditions and will continue to enforce the full compliance with the Marine Resources Act,” Esau said. Last, but not least the Minister praised the whistle blowers for their patriotism, because without them the observers and inspectors would not be able to investigate these contraventions properly. “These people who inform the Ministry of such incidents are heroes,” Esau praised them. “I would therefore urge all persons with any information of any violations to contact the authorities, observers and inspectors to assist Government in protecting our limited living marine resources,” Esau said. The Minister ended the press meeting by warning fishing right sholders that they too will be held responsible for these types of violations and unlawful incidents. “It should be remembered that as a Ministry we will hold fishing

Anti-abortion Congressman Michael Burgess says he's seen male foetuses masturbate A US Congressman has landed himself in trouble after claiming to have seen male foetuses "pleasure themselves" while in-utero. Tea Party Republican Michael Burgess, from Texas, made the claim while arguing in favour of a ban on abortions after 20 weeks gestation, Fox News reports. During a recent House Rules Committee hearing he said the promised Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act should ban abortions 15 weeks after conception. "There is no question in my mind that a baby at 20 weeks after conception can feel pain," Burgess, a former obstetrician and gynaecologist, said. "The fact of the matter is I argue with the chairman because I thought the date was far too late. We should be setting this at 15 weeks, 16 weeks. "Watch a sonogram of a 15-week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful. "They stroke their face. If they're a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs. "If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to think that they could feel pain?" His comment comes just days after another antiabortion Republican, Trent Franks , said a "very low" number of rapes result in pregnancies.

Burgess's comments have, predictably, prompted much ridicule online, with some news sites referring to him as a "wing nut", although some sites have attempted to put his comments into context. The Atlantic reported that he was trying to make a serious point about foetuses feeling pain. But at least two medical experts disagree with him. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists President Jeanne Conry told US News & World Report Burgess's comments are based on observation and emotion and not science. There is no data to assess whether a fetus at that stage feels pleasure or pain, she said. Cleveland Dr. Lisa Perriera of University Hospitals Case Medical Center told ABC news that a foetus's hand between its legs is nothing more than "practising using their muscles." "Three studies have been done in human foetuses to examine the development of connections between nerves," Perriera said. "And we don't think those connections start to form until somewhere between 23 and 30 weeks gestation." The bill is scheduled for a House vote sometime Wednesday (Australian time). It's not expected to pass.

Bird Paradise Snubs Locals

Tanya Calitz & Ivan Blazic The Bird Paradise Sanctuary has failed to acknowledge its local folk when it came to the decision to chare an admission fee at the entrance, of the once free bird haven. A few years back this habitat was open to the public free of charge, until NACOMA approached the Walvis Bay Municipality with an idea to start a conservation project and tourist attraction. The Municipality was very acceptable of their ideas, because they were faced with several challenges in regards to the upkeep of the habitat, as well as a terrible mosquito problem. Today the municipality has no involvement with the project and simply made the land available to NACOMA to use for their project. However the make-over cost NACOMA a few pennies and they had to somehow make up for the costs. This made NACOMA to started charging entrance fees to the location. “The idea of moving the area and starting up this tourism business came initially because of the mosquito problem. The Municipality and NACOMA (Namibian Conservation Management) were looking at how they could capitalise on this habitat and contribute towards the livelihood of the people as well as conserving the wetlands. This was when NACOMA took over and developed the area to what it offers today,” explained Karel !Naibab, the Project Manager at the Bird Paradise. Many locals feel that the cover charge to visit the sanctuary is way too expensive for them. “If I want to take my family there for a nice outing it will cost me over a N$1000. It just seems a bit outrageous, especially taking into consideration that this used to be free local spot and attraction” Johan de Villiers told the Namib Independent. Currently the Bird Paradise is charging N$ 150 per person for a 60 minute guided walk, N$ 250 per person for a guided 90 minute walk and N$375 for a guided walk, snacks and a visit to the Narraville mudfloods plane. “I can understand the fact that they charge tourist these amounts, but what about the community,” de Villiers stressed. !Naibab responded to these concerns by saying that they will take these complaints

into consideration, but need the locals to come and complain at their offices directly. !Naibab also said that they do take the community into consideration by offering free educational tours to school groups. “Other than conservation, we are creating awareness amongst the local schools. We give schools free educational tours and every semester we have an environmental competition for them,” said !Naibab. “What the community must also remember is that we are a business as well and have many expenses, like wages for the tour guides and security officers, communication bills, insurance and rent,” said !Naibab “The Bird Paradise has fully qualified tour guides who are more than happy to take people on tours around the paradise while giving them insightful information about the various bird species that inhabit the paradise,” !Naibab explained. One of the Paradise's challenge is trying to integrate themselves into the existing tour operator businesses, but according to !Naibab this has been going very slowly. “I think we have to strategise another way round compared to what we have been doing. We have been printing brochures, going to these guys, talking to them, giving presentations and it doesn’t work. We don’t know how to penetrate the existing market. Marketing is a major problem that we are dealing with. Maybe once we have penetrated this market we can drop the prices for locals. We do however give a 10% discount to locals and groups of 5 and more,” said !Naibab. Another problem is the nearby dumpsite, !Naibab said. “The garbage dump is so close to the sanctuary that the trash from the dumpsite is blown into the sanctuary when Walvis Bay is windy or has a sand storm. Another problem is that the local dogs go into the paradise and kill the birds. They are hunting the flamingos and this has become a big problem,” said !Naibab. !Naibab also said that security on the premises is necessary for the reasons mentioned above, as well as their huge problem with trespassing. “The paradise also faces problems with quad bikers trespassing and local children swimming in the ponds,” !Naibab defended their high rates.

The Lemon Tree Deli Well Rooted & Growing

Madelaine Laubscher The Lemon Tree Deli quickly became a very popular stop for people on the coast, and their business grows. The Lemon Tree Deli opened their doors on 18 December 2012 and so far has proven to be a huge success. They provide a warm cosy atmosphere where customers feel at home. Namib Independent was welcomed by the owners of The Lemon Tree Deli, Mrs. Belinda Burger and Mrs. Donelia Esterhuizen.

“The reason we started the business was to give the community something different from the usual take-away businesses. We are focused on health based foods which are also home made,” said Burger. She explained that the response they received since they opened was more than they expected. “We grew a lot, especially in our lunch sales and sushi sales,” said Burger. We wanted to find out what inspired them to start the business and what advice they might have for other business owners. “The passion for making food and being able to offer something different and healthier to the public was the inspiration behind taking action in starting the business and it became a success after hard work, commitment and not giving up,” said Burger with a humble smile. “The Lemon Tree Deli makes it possible for us to follow our dream. It is not always easy with all the challenges that come our way, but it makes us stronger and wiser as we aim for success. The unbelievable support we receive from the public proves that our products are of high quality and thus inspires us to be even more successful,” Esterhuizen concluded.

Fishing Company Donates to Festus Gonteb Primary Tukondja Trading Enterprises donated a cheque of N$ 5000-00 towards the building of the fence at Festus Gonteb Primary in Mondesa, Swakopmund.

DMS 30x6

The company decided to assist the school after an article appeared earlier in one of the coastal newspapers about the lack of fencing around the school. The learners at the school have been exposed to different negative things by people passing through the school premises and the break-ins that occurred at the school. As a partner of Government in job creation and socioeconomic uplifting of fellow Namibians, Tukondja Trading decided to pledge towards the school's fence project in order to create a conducive teaching and learning environment at the school. At the handing over ceremony, the director of Tukondja Trading, Mr Rickson Ndamono Kamtukwata, himself a former learner of Festus Gonteb Primary, also donated another cheque of N$5 000-00 to the senior citizens congregation of ELC Immanuel Parish of Mondesa and made a plea to former learners, like the current mayor Cllr. Kambueshe, Shangete Victor, Eddy Angula, Tobias Haitota, Every Kamtukawata, Fluksman Sameuhl, Likius Elias, David Imbili who are today successful professionals to assist the school in any form for the realization of the fence/school hall. Mr Kamtukwata also echoed Founding Father's sentiments that the foundation of a great nation's prosperity is always laid at primary school level. Mr Mathews SoOabeb (HOD) and pastor Sageus /Keib received the donations on behalf of the beneficiaries.

L IFE S T Y L E Happy Birthday Madiba Taking a Look at the Life of a Legend Compiled by Madelaine Laubscher Born on 18 July 1918, Nelson Mandela celebrates his 95th birthday today. In recent months, there have been growing concerns about Mandela's health. After suffering a lung infection in January 2011, Mandela was briefly hospitalised in Johannesburg only to undergo surgery for a stomach ailment in early 2012. He was released after a few days, later returning to Qunu. In December 2012, Mandela was hospitalised for tests and medical treatment relating to a recurrent lung infection. In March 2013, he was re-admitted to the hospital after his lung infection returned. Hours later, it was reported that he was responding positively to treatment. On June 8, 2013, 94-year-old Mandela was rushed to a hospital in Pretoria, receiving treatment once again for the recurring lung infection. Later that same day, the South African president's office stated that Mandela was in a "serious but stable condition," and that he was breathing on his own. Mandela's wife, Graca Machel, reportedly canceled a scheduled appearance in London to remain at her husband's side, and his daughter, Zenani Dlamini, Argentina's South African Ambassador, reportedly flew back to South Africa to be with her father. Nelson Mandela continues to be a source of inspiration for civil rights activists worldwide. In 2009, Mandela's birthday (July 18) was declared Mandela Day, an International Day to promote Global Peace and celebrate the South African leader's legacy. As the world prays for the anti-apartheid legend, his eldest daughter Makaziwe Mandela said: "In our culture, the Tembu culture that I know, the African culture that I know, you never release the person unless the person has told you: ‘please my children, my family, release me.’ My dad hasn’t said that to us. So these people who want to talk about, you know, releasing him; he hasn’t said we should release him and we haven’t come to the end yet. It is only God who knows the end.”

A little history and some interesting facts about Madiba’s life: Nelson Mandela’s birth name is Rolihlahla (meaning “troublemaker” in Xhosa) Mandela. (Nelson was added later.) He was born in “Black” Transkei, Africa on July 18, 1918. Mandela is the world's most celebrated man who has held a political office while being jailed for nearly 30 years. Despite the fact that his freedom was stripped from him, he continued to stand up for his beliefs and the rights of his fellow South Africans. Nelson’s peaceful boyhood was spent cattle herding and with other rural pursuits. When his father died, Nelson’s rich and powerful relative took custody of him. Nelson Mandela was influenced by his African heritage of ritual and taboo. His values and attitudes were shaped by traditions and his royal privileges. He was sent to boarding school and later to Fort Hare Missionary College. He was expelled from college for helping to organise a strike against the white colonial rule of the institution. He then became involved in other protests against the white colonial rule. In doing so he set out for personal and national liberation. He ran away from home to avoid an arranged marriage. Later, he graduated from the University of South Africa with a degree in law. He joined a law firm as an apprentice. In 1942, Nelson joined the African National Congress (ANC), which, at the time, was polite to the government. Soon Nelson Mandela had persuaded the ANC to use boycotts and strikes against the government, instead of being polite. He was arrested for civil disobedience, and was not allowed to attend gatherings. In his spare time, Nelson Mandela studied to become a lawyer so that he could protect blacks. Work as a lawyer strengthened his feelings against apartheid (which segregated and discriminated against blacks in South Africa). Nelson was particularly active during the 1950’s. After the Shrapeville massacre in which many blacks were killed, the white rule banned the ANC. Nelson went underground. He created the MK, which was the military wing of the ANC. Nelson arranged military training in Algeria for the MK members. He launched a sabotage campaign. On his return from Algeria he was arrested for going between countries without a passport, and was tried for sabotage and attempting to overthrow the government. He spent the next 27 years in prison. Before going to prison he said, “Make every home, every shack or rickety structure into a learning center.”

Mandela became president on 10th May All these qualities and his peaceful tactics 1994 after South Africa's first multi-racial for dealing with the issue are some of the many elections were held on 27 April 1994. The reasons why Mandela is such a legendary African National Congress (ANC) won 62% leader. of the vote in the election, and Mandela, as leader of the ANC, was inaugurated as the country's first black President. He presided over the transition from minority rule and apartheid, winning international respect for his advocacy of national and international reconciliation. Mandela is an amazing leader because of his dedication, inspiration and his vision of change. He is one of the leaders who put an end to the apartheid rule in South Africa and the first black president of the country. As president, his main goal was to unify Africa. He made sure that everyone clearly knew and understood his goal of equality and took all the steps possible in order to reach that goal. He encouraged the actions of others and motivated others towards acceptance of people that are of a different race. Mandela made sure he accomplished his goal as much as possible. He modeled the way, inspired a shared vision, enabled others to act, challenged the process and encouraged the heart, which are all five aspects of leadership.

Andre Mulder - ATTEMPTED MURDERER I wish someone can explain to me how exactly Namibian law operates. How is it that Andre almost sent this woman to her death and he walks away with a N$6 000 fine?? How does a qualified judge or lawyer believe a psychopath like Andre when he said he merely used his open palm to defend himself? When the previous article in NI 25.04.13 said, he came back for one last attack and said, "If she was not dead then, she is now"

while someone else was watching for fear of her own life. In actual fact he attacked one woman and put the fear of death in another, at some point when does logic apply to all this - if he could do that to a woman who is going to be his next target people like this should be locked up for good and have the key thrown away. Who makes the final decision on these sentences and fines? The court Roll has had cases like Fraud

N$7 000, Theft N$5 000, DUI N$4 000, House Braking N$500 & Attempted Murder N$1 000. How do you pay N$6 000 for Attempted Murder and N$7 000 for Fraud and then on the next Attempted Murder case you pay N$ 1 000. We already can’t handle crime in Namibia one would think, those criminals you can get your hands on, you would want to make an example of them - not set them free with a fine of N$6 000. By the Way attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of life or 25 years imprisonment. Note that in order to be guilty of murder under the NSW Crimes Act, intent to cause grievous bodily harm is enough to secure a conviction for murder, as a felony murder (constructive murder in Australia). Thanks, Cleopatra

The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be normal… They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relationship to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to the abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they are fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted. Aldous Huxley

It seems to me that the idea of a personal God is an anthropological concept which I cannot take seriously. I also cannot imagine some will or goal outside the human sphere.... Science has been charged with undermining morality, but the charge is unjust. A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death. - Albert Einstein, "Religion and Science," New York Times Magazine, November 9, 1930

The All New BMW X5 BMW X5 goes on sale November 2013 with V6 Diesel & V8 Petrol Engines

The BMW X5 - the creator of the Sports Activity Vehicle segment and internationally bestselling car in its category, with greater than 1.3 million units sold since the launching of the initial generation - is entering a brand new phase in its successful history. The new BMW X5 offers an assured all round package to clients. The defining characteristics of the experience of the new BMW X5 are an exclusive interior ambience with high-quality materials, luxury design and advanced relaxation-enhancing functions. Adaptive M suspension, within the M Sport package accessible, also includes Dynamic Damper Control and back-axle air suspension, too, as especially sports oriented suspension tuning. The collection of engines available from launching contains a V8 engine and a six cylinder inline diesel. They're joined by an M Performance Vehicle within the form of the BMW X5 M50d. Exterior design: an elegant combination of dynamic flair and robust presence Signature BMW design attributes combine with robustness, incontrovertible presence and versatility to give their distinctive look to BMW X versions. The proportions of the third generation Sports Activity Vehicle are once again defined by the short space between the instrument panel and front axle as well as a short front overhang, long wheelbase, and upright A pillars. The new BMW X5 has an incredibly comprehensive-set kidney grille stretching all the way to the headlight units, as well as the hallmark BMW double circular headlights, which in turn stretch well into the car's side panels. Sweeping chrome inserts and the conspicuously three-dimensional layout of the lights underline the car's advanced nature. LED front foglamps can be specified as an alternative. Interior decorating: high-quality materials, luxurious ambience,

cutting edge functionality The inside of the new BMW X5 is both refined and generously sized. The flat structure of the surfaces underlines the wide sweep of the instrument panel and consequently also the number of room available on board. Plus, the layout of the surfaces also creates energetic contrasts. The ambient lighting designs contained in the light package add additional emphasis to the unity between the instrument panel and door panels. LED units arranged in a wraparound contour line and featuring in the regions of the interior make an effect. Blue, orange and white light can be chosen either independently or in nine prestored combinations via the system. The materials chosen for the new BMW X5 also play a part in shaping the exclusive onboard ambience. The emphasis strip extends to the front door panels and is picked up again in the back door panels. Design, pure excellence: luxurious and modern The exterior mirror B pillars, bases and C pillars all feature high gloss black trim. The lower segment of the instrument panel comes in matching Ivory White. Added to which, the variety of potential uses for its generously sized inside has grown yet again. The newly designed seats for the driver and front passenger ensure a higher amount of notable lateral hold and long distance comfort through dynamically taken corners. Sports seats and comfort seats (normal in the BMW X5 M50d) are available as alternatives. Comfort seats and seat heating system are both now also available for the back compartment. The back comfort seats can be specified either as an individual choice or collectively with the optional third row of seats. The two additional seats are simple to access thanks to a handle plate plus a Simple Entry function by the C - column. They may be lowered individually into the

load compartment floor, are created mainly for passengers measuring a maximum 1.50 metres in height and come with inertia reel seat belts. Safety: Audible and visual warnings are given if a danger is detected and at the same time the brake system is primed as a way to lessen stopping distance. At speeds as much as 60 km/h (37 mph), average "danger" braking is actuated to lessen vehicle rate and alert the driver to a vital situation. The Driving Assistant Plus bundle provides much more support. Here the Driving Assistant functions are joined with the Active Cruise Get a Grip On system with Stop and Go func-tion, which improves security and comfort in stop-and and slow moving - Driving Assistant Plus automatically brakes the car, if needed to a standstill, in the event the motorist fails to respond to a warning of an impending frontal collision. Comfort: exceptional solutions and advanced driving support systems Within the new BMW X5, the BMW Head Up Display, which projects significant info in full colour on the windscreen, now contains additional content. This assists the driver looking for acceptable parallel parking

spaces and exactly manoeuvres the automobile into a parking space, not only by steering but also by choosing the proper equipment and using the brake pedal and accelerator. The new BMW X5 can so park itself automatically in a chosen parking space, once the system is activated at the press of the button. The market launch of-the new BMW X5 in Germany is planned for November 2013.

Swakop Striders Proud of Their First Championship

Five-A-Side Netball Fun Day a Success

6 July was the day of the first ever Swakop Striders Athletics Championship. The day was a huge success, with three Namibian records being broken - however, as this was not an official event, the achievements will not be recognised. Chené de Wet improved upon her own senior ladies’ height in the Pole Vault with a vault of 2.32m, while Siranda Horn cleared 1.66m. This is well over the previous U/15 Girls’ High Jump record of 1.64m. Visa Ujaha cleared 1.90m, improving on the U/15 Boys’ High Jump record of 1.85m. The Striders Championship was only the first of a row of athletic events planned for the next few months. There will be a coaching course in August, and a regional championship is in the books for the near future. Also upcoming is the Annual Combined Events Competition held in Windhoek in September. The Swakop Striders expressed their hope of a strong team of theirs taking part. Furthermore, the club would like to remind their athletes of the season’s first Bank Windhoek Grand Prix, which will be held in Swakopmund on Saturday 7 December. All athletes should

prepare well so that they can be ready and fit when the day comes. The Swakop Striders Athletics Championship was organised to get the athletes ready for the new season. The Swakop Striders Club strongly believes that sport is a way to develop good citizens, and aims to get the youth interested in athletics again. After hosting such a successful event, the club is hopeful that Swakopmund’s youngsters join hands and develop what has already become the largest

athletics club in Namibia. Also, the club wishes to express their pride in their international athlete, Lee-Anzo Losper. He recently competed in Donetsk in the Ukraine, taking part in the International Association of Athletics Federation’s World Youth Championship. Last but not least, Swakop Striders want to thank the club committee who had the mammoth task of getting this event off the ground, as well as all parents and friends who helped to make it a success

The Walvis Bay Netball Centre held a fun day to raise funds for the development of netball at the coast as well as for less privileged schools. In five-a-side netball there are only five members per team - the Wing-Attack and Wing Defence has fallen away. It is quickly becoming a trend among netball players across the world because it is faster and more action-packed than conventional netball. A game consists of 4 x 6 minute rounds with 2 minute resting periods in between. Two of the team members in a team can also be men. Twelve teams participated in the fun day at Jan Wilken Stadium on 13 July. Out of the twelve, four were made up of

both genders. The results are as follows: 1st place went to the Navy Netball Club who received a cash prize of N$1500 as well as gift packages. 2nd place went to Nampol Netball Club who received gift packages, while 3rd place went to Eleven Arrows who received gift packages, too. The team with the best spirit was Deep Ocean. The best dressed team was Funky Bunnies. The chairperson of the WBNC, Mrs Erica Van Zyl, would like to thank all the sponsors for the prizes, namely the Walvis Bay Netball Centre, First National Bank Swakopmund, Lube Marketing and A1 Car Wash.

Squash Players Proudly Raised the Social League Trophy for 2013

The Namib Diesel Social League (NDSL) held their Trophy high for 2013, leaving them looking forward to the 2014 NDSL while they celebrated thei prize giving. According to Mr. Trevor Heath, the last two rounds were very competitive, although Fuel Pump Repairs Africa was at the top. “Fuel Pump Repairs kept their game in the lead. Gateway Shipping tried their best to try and catch them for the second and third slots as

well. Coastal Car Hire tried to knock Gateway down to three and FCS tried to sneak in to take third spot. However, Fuel Pump Repairs Africa kept their game and played well in the lead to lift the Namib Diesel Social League Trophy for 2013,” said Heath. The final points standing were as follows: Fuel Pump Repairs Africa – 160. Gateway Shipping – 138. Coastal Car Hire – 128. FCS – 125. Seawork –

119; Steel Africa – 116. Magic Discounters – 112. Woermann Brock Hardware & Building Supplies – 90. The prize giving was held after play on Friday 5 July.
