Man Hit by Train - Third Accident in Three Weeks Madelaine Laubscher A serious train accident took place on Tuesday morning. A Trans Namib employee was critically injured. This marks the third train accident in as many weeks. The town is still recovering from the tragic accident that saw a young local girl run over by a train, causing loss of limbs and death. This was followed by another serious accident last week when a truck and a train collided. Following Tuesday’s accident, the seriously injured Trans Namib worker was flown to Windhoek for treatment. He had been opening a gate at Walvis Bay Engen Depot when the train hit him. According to a witness, the worker radioed the train driver to tell him that

he was opening the gate. However, the radio appears to have been inoperative. Hence, no message was relayed to the train driver. The train did not stop on its way into the depot, hitting into the gate while the worker was standing right behind it. The victim was pinned down by the gate, resulting in serious injuries. According to St Gabriel Ambulance Service, the worker is in a critical but stable condition. “He has a fractured arm, a neck injury, broken ribs and suffers from polytrauma,” stated Gabriella from St. Gabriel’s Community Trust Ambulance Service. The worker was transported directly to Welwitschia Hospital and flown to Windhoek soon after. Other Trans Namib employees at the hospital were quick to turn away the Continued on Page 3

A source told the Namib Independent that Labuschagne, a Grade 12 Geography teacher and

Sports trainer, fearing prosecution and disciplinary action, absconded when he realised that his unbecoming behaviour had become known to parents and school authorities. Principal Christiaan Grobler, contacted for comment, confirmed that the school received complaints from some parents but that the teacher disappeared from the school shortly thereafter and his whereabouts are not known. Asked if the Ministry of Education had been regarding the alleged pornographic materials, the specific nature of the complaints and who notified about the incident Grobler said the was involved. “I do not want at this stage to school was a private school and the ministry

had nothing to do with the issue. Contacted for comment, John /Awaseb from the MOE said he was not aware of the incident. “We are not involved in the recruitment and remuneration of private school teachers. We only act when government policies concerning teachers and learners are infringed and we come in to rectify and act when complaints come from parents. In this case no parents brought any complaint and we were not informed.” /Awaseb also added that the private schools have no obligation to inform the ministry because Government does not subsidise private schools.

media, issuing instructions to hospital staff that under no circumstances was the injured worker to speak to any media, even upon his release. The Namib Independent spoke directly to Trans Namib’s Train Operations Supervisor Mr. Colin Garisebto to find out whether the radio was indeed broken. “I can categorically state that statements made about the radio not working are a complete lie,” said Mr Gariseb. When pressed on the fact that this is the third serious train accident in as many weeks, and indeed what Trans Namib proposes to do about the issue, Garises said, ““What can we do? These accidents are beyond our control. What are we to do if pedestrians do not look or pay attention when crossing the railway? Also, drivers are not listening to the warning sirens of the train and they are also ignoring the warning lights at the crossing. These accidents are not because of Trans Namib.”

Ankama Praises

Cavema Innovation Clementine Aweses The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Dr Chief Ankama, yesterday was taken on a conducted tour to see investment progress by Cavema Fishing (Pvt) Ltd since its inception in January 2013. At the end of the tour, Ankama saluted Cavema Fishing Company for packing broken fish and selling it at cheap a price to locals in Kuisebmund. This product, culturally or statutorily known as fish waste, is used by other fish factories to make fish meal, which is sold overseas. “That way, Cavema is addressing hunger and poverty issues. Community members who were struggling to put food on their table can now buy the “waste” product at half the price of the Horse Mackerel. I was very impressed. As a new deputy minister in this ministry I would like to know what the other companies are doing with this waste," Ankama quizzed. “If they are not doing the same, I bet you, I am going to talk to my colleagues and make sure they will follow suit. If we want to address poverty and hunger, the way forward has been paved by Cavema Fishing. I would want to see the media

getting closer and expose that Cavema Fishing is doing a good thing to the communities of this country.” The Deputy Minister also hailed Cavema fishing for the positive indicators thus far. He noted that the company’s organisation structure was consistent with the expectations of the fisheries policy and the composition of 38 Namibian crew members versus 23 foreign crew members was worth noting as it shows some positive interventions. “The industrialisation of our fishing industry will become a reality. We can learn from those that are successful and I see Cavema as being successful. After five years I hope to see only two or none foreign crews as we drive towards Namibianisation of the fishing industry,” Ankama said. He however lambasted people who, when awarded quotas, fight one another and appoint themselves chairman of the organisation instead of creating sustainable companies and creating employment opportunities for others. Ankama said recipients of fishing quotas must make sure that they establish companies that are sustainable and selfsufficient, self-financing and that honour the obligations of

weather

the ministry and to create the much needed jobs. “The Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is the custodian of the fishing and fishrelated products in Namibia, therefore we have a great responsibility to make sure that what is being done in the fishing industry is indeed at the level of our Act and the law that governs the ministry and its activities. This thing of greediness is not only a sickness, it’s a mental retardation. Only mentally crippled people would do those things. After three to six months of forming a company you go and alter company founding statements. That thing should come to an end. In fact, we are going to work on this one. Those who are doing so will regret it,” Ankama warned. On job creation and skills transfer, he stated that the country has all the amenities that can be used to create job opportunities and to create skills transfer. He explained that the fishing industry can create job opportunities by establishing bankable companies like Cavema. By processing, packaging and freezing the fish at sea, the companies create jobs for locals. He added that boxes used for packaging can be made locally and create more jobs. The Minister claimed that

Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Dr Chief Ankama (centre), flanked by Cavema Fishing (Pvt) Ltd (left) and Robert Shimooshili, Head of Operations and Human Resources

there are a number of Namibians with fishing skills who are unemployed and the ministry will conduct a survey to establish the number of Namibians with ship captain skills who can steer vessels at different levels. Speaking at the same occasion, Hosea Nico Kaiyamo, chairman of Cavema Fishing, stated that the company’s structures were in line with the Namibianisation of the fishing industry and in line with the Ministry’s empowerment policies. Kaiyamo explained that unfavourable financial situations made the company source for an international finance partner. This ended up to be Altemar, who joined the venture on a 36 percent shareholding. He also said that when the loan is repaid in full, as major shareholders with a 64 percent stake, the local partners have the first right to buy out Altemar, a situation that will make the fishing company 100 percent Namibian owned.

Nujoma “Protectors” Kill Pet Dog in Henties

Madelaine Laubscher Mrs Elsa van der Merwe, a resident of Henties Bay, was shocked when a non-uniformed police officer shot and killed her pet Swiss Shepherd last weekend. The officer is alleged to have been part of a security contingent assigned to protecting the premises and person of ex-president Sam Nujoma, who was vacationing in the holiday resort. According to local police statements, the officer was on an observation patrol when the incident took place.

According to Mrs van der Merwe, her three dogs, two of which were imported Swiss Shepherds, spent hours every day on the dunes and on the beach just outside of her home where the incident occurred, and have never bothered anyone in the past. On this particular day, her dogs were on the beach while she was working in her study, when she heard a loud gunshot from the vicinity. Not thinking too much of it, she only became worried about her dogs when merely two of the three returned from their folly. Within minutes she found the lifeless body of her dog Cassie and after a quick inspection it became evident that the dog had been shot in its side. She discovered only one person nearby and after asking him for assistance, was surprised that none was forthcoming. “I pleaded to the man to help me, but after speaking both English and Afrikaans to the gentleman it was clear that he did not understand me, nor did he offer to help me carry the dog home,” said Mrs van der Merwe. Only when addressing the shooting at the police station a little later did Mrs van der Merwe discover that the shooter and the unhelpful bystander where one and the same and that the gentleman was in fact a police officer. “It was only at this stage that the man presented his badge to me and it

became clear that he could speak both English and Afrikaans,” she said. When the Namib Independent made queries as to the sequence of events that led to the slaughter of the dog, Inspector Iikuyu from the Walvis Bay Police department stated that, “The police officer was on an observation patrol on the beach when five dogs attacked him. Acting out of self defence, the officer was left with no alternative but to shoot and kill one of the dogs.” In a statement, Iikuyu claimed that Mrs Elsa van Der Merwe understands exactly why her dog’s life was ended in such a tragic manner. “The fact is that the dog was on municipal grounds and was not on a leash when this happened. The dog was acting viciously towards the policeman, so it was shot,” said Iikuyu. When pressed for the name and details of the officer who shot the dog, Iikkuyu refrained from engaging

further and refused to make any more details known. A heartbroken Mrs van der Merwe stated that she cannot fully comprehend the situation that has led to the killing of her beloved pet. “My dogs are on the beach everyday, where there are always people catching fish. Not once has Cassie shown any aggression toward the fishermen or anyone else,” she said. Mrs van Der Merwe is also perplexed by the statements made by the police. She said, “They said that Cassie was shot near the water and that she was attacking the gentleman, but I found her body far from the beach near my house and what confuses me more is that the dog was shot in its side, from the side and not from in front as you would expect if it was attacking someone. To me, this means that the dog was shot from a distance and not from close up. This is suspicious to me.”

Swakop Uranium

Agrees to Wage Increase

13/06/168

In a joint statement, Swakop Uranium and the Mineworkers Union of Namibia (MUN) announced that an agreement has been entered into between the mine, MUN and employee representatives, whereby all employees within the bargaining unit will receive a 7 percent increase across the board, effective from 1 July 2013. Swakop Uranium is currently building the Husab mine, which is located about 70 km from Swakopmund in Namibia. Once in full production, Husab will be the second largest uranium mine in the world. According to Percy McCallum, Swakop Uranium’s Director of Human Resources, the negotiations with the employee representatives and the MUN were conducted in good spirit. In addition to the wage increase, the parties also agreed on improvements to some allowances. In this spirit, Swakop Uranium agreed to increase the housing

allowance by the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI). It will now be N$1500 per employee per month in the bargaining unit. They furthermore undertook to permanently employ the current affected temporary employees. The move into permanent roles will take place during the last quarter of 2013. The parties also agreed that employees will be allowed to join Swakop Uranium’s pension fund scheme when they become permanent. “Swakop Uranium strives to implement best practice standards in occupational health and safety, employment equity, conditions of employment, training and development and industrial relations," says McCallum. "We want to attract and retain quality staff and to be seen as an employer of choice in Namibia. I would like to believe that this agreement is in line with our philosophy and vision.” Mr Cleophas Ngwena, Regional Co-Ordinator of the Mineworkers

Union of Namibia, said he appreciated the commitment of Swakop Uranium Management and Board of Directors to uplift the conditions of employment of employees and the commitment to create employment for the Namibian population.

Schlettwein Opens Dormac World Class Workshop economies to industrialise in order to improve and sustain economic growth and living standards of the people. Schlettwein stated the Ministry of Trade and Industry is advocating the “Growth at Home” strategy, which emphasises industrialisation, manufacturing and value addition. The ministry will develop value chains that are based on raw materials available in the country. This will be augmented by the inclusion of the concept of regional value chains that will accelerate regional economic integration to establish marketing links, and are essential for economic growth. As a member of the Southern Africa Customs Union, (SACU) and Southern African Development Community (SADC), Namibia is part of a larger market, which offers great opportunities on one hand but on the other reduces policy space for the development of domestic service industries, production and exports, the Minister noted. Namport Sponsors Admin Block

From second left: School Principal Ms. N H Nghipondoka, Erkki Nghimtina Minister of Works and Transport and Liz Sibindi handing over the keys to Ohangwena Governor Usko Nghaamwa

Clementine Aweses Namibia Ports Authority (Namport) donated N$250 000 towards the construction of an administration block at Erkki Nghimtina Primary School in the North. Liz Sibindi, Manager of Corporate Communications, speaking at the official handover of the block said that the Namport Social Investment Fund focuses on education, entrepreneurship and health and the donation is in fulfillment of Namport’s objective to enhance performance and excellence.

Namport finds that, in education, an enabling environment for both teachers and learners sets the tone for success. “We at Namport believe that we contributed towards creating an environment for success via the sponsorship of the admin block you see here today. We are looking forward to hear teacher success stories and about excellent performers graduating from this school,” Sibindi said. She told delegates that Namport’s corporate social responsibility is spread throughout the country. Since the inception

of the fund in 2006 the organisation has invested nearly N$20 million in projects in all the 13 regions. She urged the learners, teachers and members of the community to take good care of the facility and collectively guard it against vandalism. The patron of the school and Minister of Works and Transport, Erkki Nghimtina, after whom the school is also named, reiterated Sibindi’s call for collective guarding and good maintenance of the school. The Gorvenor of the Ohangwena region, Usko Nghaamwa, who also attended the handover ceremony, thanked Namport for the sponsorship and called on other organisations to invest in other needs presented not only by that school but the entire education fraternity in the region.

Taxi Drivers Protest High Fines Clementine Aweses

On Tuesday, taxi drivers in Walvis Bay switched off their engines to join a nationwide strike. They are protesting against the hefty fines for various traffic offences as well as what drivers call unfair punishment for tickets issued in areas where the municipalities have not provided adequate taxi ranks. Victor Naidila, a committee member and spokesperson for the Walvis Bay branch of Namibia Transport and Taxi Union (NTTU) said taxi drivers are making losses and taking home paltry salaries because the bulk of the income is going towards settling fines. “The lowest amount for a ticket is one thousand dollars and we are saying something must be done to bring down these figures because the fines are driving us out of business. We condone traffic offences like over-speeding, driving through red robots or driving under the influence of alcohol, which endanger peoples’ lives, but we feel some of the tickets issued are unreasonable,” Naidila complained. He said it is unfair to punish a taxi driver for dropping passengers in places that municipal traffic officers say are undesignated and have no taxi ranks. Naidila also said municipalities must provide adequate taxi ranks so

that taxi drivers do not become the victims of a myriad of circumstances that are beyond their control. “At the Woermann Brock Swakop taxi rank there is no space for the small cars to go in because the place is too small when the buses are there. What do we do when we are supposed to drop customers there? Mahwilili only has two taxi ranks. The municipality must provide more taxi ranks for us

to drop customers without getting the exorbitant tickets issued to us daily by municipal and Nampol traffic officers.” Taxi drivers in Walvis Bay also complained bitterly about alleged assaults by a municipal traffic officer (name supplied). “The officers of both Nampol and municipality must treat us as human beings and with respect. When you

question them why they are issuing you with a ticket they tell you that it is not their problem that your parents did not send you to school. We sympathise with customers but there is nothing we can do. This strike is nationwide and the message is, fines are too high, adequate taxi ranks must be provided, the traffic officers must respect us and also give a warning for first offenders,” Naidila said.

Commenting on the few taxis that continued ferrying customers, Naidila said the striking drivers will not tell them to stop, neither will they be beaten up for not following the majority line. He added, however, that if the taxi drivers appreciate the rationale behind the strike then they would not be on the road. More than 150 taxis grounded their vehicles in Walvis Bay alone.

Bird Paradise Snubs Locals

Tanya Calitz & Ivan Blazic The Bird Paradise Sanctuary seems to have failed to acknowledge local folk when deciding to charge an admission fee at the entrance of the once free bird haven. A few years back, this habitat was open to the public free of charge, until the Namibian Conservation Management (NACOMA) approached the Walvis Bay Municipality with an idea to start a conservation project and tourist attraction. The Municipality was very acceptable of their ideas, because they were faced with several challenges in regards to the upkeep of the habitat, as well as a terrible mosquito problem. Today the municipality has no involvement with the project and simply made the land available to NACOMA to use for their project. “The idea of moving the area and starting up this tourism business came initially because of the mosquito problem. The

Municipality and NACOMA were looking at how they could capitalise on this habitat and contribute towards the livelihood of the people as well as conserving the wetlands. This was when NACOMA took over and developed the area to what it offers today,” explained Karel !Naibab, the Project Manager at the Bird Paradise. Many locals feel that the cover charge to visit the sanctuary is way too expensive for them. “If I want to take my family there for a nice outing it will cost me over a N$1 000. It just seems a bit outrageous, especially taking into consideration that this used to be free local spot and attraction” Johan de Villiers told the Namib Independent. Currently the Bird Paradise is charging N$150 per person for a 60 minute guided walk, N$250 per person for a guided 90 minute walk and N$375 for a guided walk, snacks and a visit to the Narraville mud-floods plane. “I can understand the fact that they charge tourist these amounts, but what about the community,” de Villiers stressed.

!Naibab responded to these concerns by saying that they will take the complaints into consideration, but need the locals to come and complain at their offices directly. !Naibab also said that they do take the community into consideration by offering free educational tours to school groups. “Other than conservation, we are creating awareness amongst the local schools. We give schools free educational tours and every semester we have an environmental competition for them,” said !Naibab. “What the community must also remember is that we are a business as well and have many expenses, like wages for the tour guides and security officers, communication bills, insurance and rent,” said !Naibab “The Bird Paradise has fully qualified tour guides who are more than happy to take people on tours around the paradise while giving them insightful information about the various bird species that inhabit the paradise,” he explained. One of the Paradise's challenge is trying to integrate themselves into the existing tour operator businesses, but according to !Naibab this has been going very slowly. “I think we have to strategise another way

round compared to what we have been doing. We have been printing brochures, going to these guys, talking to them, giving presentations and it doesn’t work. We don’t know how to penetrate the existing market. Marketing is a major problem that we are dealing with. Maybe once we have penetrated this market we can drop the prices for locals. We do however give a 10% discount to locals and groups of five and more,” said !Naibab. Another problem is the nearby dumpsite, !Naibab said. “The garbage dump is so close to the sanctuary that the trash from the dumpsite is blown into the sanctuary when Walvis Bay is windy or has a sand storm. The local dogs go into the paradise and kill the birds. They are hunting the flamingos and this has become a big problem,” said !Naibab. He explained that security on the premises is necessary for the reasons mentioned above, as well as their huge problem with trespassing. “The paradise also faces problems with quad bikers trespassing and local children swimming in the ponds,” !Naibab defended their high rates.

Swakop Mayor Refutes Claims of Corruption and Slams Colleagues Tanya Calitz Recently, an article appeared in one newspaper about the Swakopmund Mayors’ ‘land grabbing scheme’. This article accused the Mayor, Juuso Kambueshe, of corruption. As reaction, he immediately called for a press hearing on Monday to clear his name and rebuke the allegations made against him. Swakopmund Mayor Juuso Kambueshe According to the media report, Kambueshe has “allegedly mechanised the absence of the town’s Chief Executive Officer Eckart Demasius to acquire 17 452.74 square metres of prime business land which he failed to secure before he became Mayor,” the report said. It was also said that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) questioned the matter, which Mr Demasius briefly confirmed by saying that the (ACC) has made a formal inquiry about the land in question. Kambueshe strongly denied these accusations and reports, saying that they are nothing more than a personal attack on him and calling it “political sabotage”. Kambueshe specifically pointed fingers to Municipal CEO, Mr Demasius, and General Manager of Corporate Services and Human Resources, Mr Marco Swarts, saying that they are incompetent and that Swarts is a ‘serial blackmailer’. According to Kambueshe, Swarts started to make trouble for him after he stopped sponsoring his son’s golf activities. The Mayor also referred to paperwork and documentation delays, which was eventually sorted, but once he paid a deposit into the Municipal account for the prime business property in Mondesa, he was informed that his request has lapsed. “These councillors are corrupted,” Kambueshe said on Monday to the media. “I have been lied to and there are people sitting in

management who are not suppose to be here,” he said, referring to people in council who allegedly leaked untrue information about him. According to Municipal officials who wish to remain anonymous, Mayor Kambueshe used the fact that the CEO Demasius was away to his advantage in getting the land deal approved under the same condition and value of seven years ago. It was further alleged by the officials that Kambueshe would have purchased the land for N$1 million, way below the current market value of close to N$9 million. The Mayor refuted these allegations and said that he has evidence proving that he made provisional payments to secure the property. Kambueshe further lashed out by saying that some of the employees at the Municipality feel threatened by him because of his youth and vibrant personality, and they do not like the positive change he wants to bring to the town. “Maybe the CEO (referring to Demasius) is a bit old for the job. He is not capable of performing his duties anymore,” Kambueshe exclaimed. Kambueshe also said that he feels that the Affirmative Action Act is not being enforced and that there are people who are in positions who do not deserve to be there. He further noted that the Councils’ Management Committee is an ‘illegal body’ with undeserving people serving on the committee. The Mayor concluded the press conference by stating that he would die for that piece of land, and that he would go to the High Court to fight his case if need be. “It is time for the truth to be known,” he said. The CEO, Mr. Demasius told the NI that he prevers not to comment on the matter for the time being.

‘Bear a Blanket’ with Jonathan Jacob and Local Schools Tanya Calitz Jonathan Jacob Project (JJP), initiated by Gerdus Kruger, just had a successful venture in collaboration with two Walvis Bay Schools, collecting blankets for the less fortunate. Walvis Bay Privaat Hoerskool and Laerskool Walvis Bay competed against each other to see who could collect the most blankets. The prize offered to the winning school was N$1000, which WB Privaat Hoerskool proudly collected. The schools also raised funds for the project to buy more blankets with. “The ‘Bear a Blanket’ Project is a subproject of the JJP that focuses on the collecting and distributing of blankets for those who need warmth or shelter against the cold winter,” Kruger explained. The JJP also has three other projects they run throughout the year, namely; Collect a Can, Comforting Clothes, and Build a Dream. Kruger said that his biggest surprise with this project was the community’s involvement and enthusiasm from the start. Once all the blankets were collected the JJP group started distributing the blankets among the

homeless and less fortunate. “We want to thank everyone that participated. We want to thank the community for their on-going support and I personally want to thank the JJP committee members for organising the whole event,” Kruger said. The next JJP initiative will be taking place this Saturday at the Municipal Community Hall where the Project will be feeding the hungry in our community. Anyone who would like to get involved with the Jonathan Jacob Project to help build and look after our community can contact Gerdus Kruger via his email address – gerduskruger@gmail.com

Mr Gay Namibia to Represent the Country in Belgium

Tanya Calitz Mr Gay Namibia, Ricardo Amunjera will be representing the coast and our country at the Mr Gay World Event at the end of the month in Belgium. Ricardo won the Mr Gay Namibia title last year, and has since prepared for the Mr Gay World competition, which will be taking place from 31 July till 5 August. There are 33 contestants, with only two rivals from Africa, South Africa being the other country. Ricardo said that a lot of

hard work had gone into the preparation for the competition. “I did a lot of gym training and healthy eating, but the aspect I focused on most was keeping up to date on the current events and issues from around the work and sharpening up my general knowledge,” Ricardo shared with the Namib Independent over a cup of coffee at Probst. Ricardo says that he is very excited about the competition and feels ready. “I have put a lot of work into it and have wonderful support from my family, friends and life partner, Marc (whom he married in South Africa earlier this year),” he said. “I reckon my biggest rival and competition at the Mr Gay World event will be Mexico,” Ricardo said. There will be contestants from all over the world, including the Philippines, Finland, Denmark, Austria, Australia, Canada and many more. Ricardo said that he thinks this competition will be good positive exposure to Namibia, and that it might help fight the prejudice against gayness in the country. “In general Namibia is very accepting of all its people, but some justify their hatred towards gayness and other difference by hiding behind ‘tradition’, Ricardo said. He currently resides on the coast and works at Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine as a Geological Supervisor. According to Ricardo his colleagues all support and encourage him. He told us that as part of the competition they will go on a Human Rights Summit and also do some charity work. Ricardo said that this year the public vote will count a lot, so supporters can go and vote for him on Twitter and Facebook. The person with the most votes will win the ‘People’s Choice’ Award. The Mr Gay World Competition was held in South Africa last year, and will be taking place in the ‘world’s gayest city’, Antwerp, along with the World Outgames.

Bunch of Tossers! On a stroll along the lagoon the other day, I came across these bottles that had been tossed into the lagoon. As a regular walker on this route, I am consistently amazed at the kind of thing that goes on along the walkway. Your own newspaper has reported on many such instances,

such as burnt out bins and drunken fools driving cars along the walkway and knocking down lamp-poles. This one takes the cake because these “tossers must have been that inebriated that they threw away full beers. What must our feathered friends think? Walkway wonderer, Walvis Bay

Anti-abortion Congressman Michael Burgess says h e ' s s e e n male foetu ses masturbate A US Congressman has landed himself in trouble after claiming to have seen male foetuses "pleasure themselves" while inutero. Tea Party Republican Michael Burgess, from Texas, made the claim while arguing in favour of a ban on abortions after 20 weeks gestation, Fox News reports. During a recent House Rules Committee hearing he said the promised Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act should ban abortions 15 weeks after conception.

"There is no question in my mind that a baby at 20 weeks after conception can feel pain," Burgess, a former obstetrician and gynaecologist, said. "The fact of the matter is I argue with the chairman because I thought the date was far too late. We should be setting this at 15 weeks, 16 weeks. Watch a sonogram of a 15week baby, and they have movements that are purposeful. They stroke their face. If they're a male baby, they may have their hand between their legs.

If they feel pleasure, why is it so hard to think that they could feel pain?" His comment comes just days after another anti-abortion Republican, Trent Franks , said a "very low" number of rapes result in pregnancies. Burgess's comments have, predictably, prompted much ridicule online, with some news sites referring to him as a "wing nut", although some sites have attempted to put his comments into context. The Atlantic reported that he was trying to

make a serious point about foetuses feeling pain. But at least two medical experts disagree with him. American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists President Jeanne Conry told US News & World Report Burgess's comments are based on observation and emotion and not science. There is no data to assess whether a fetus at that stage feels pleasure or pain, she said. Cleveland Dr. Lisa Perriera of University Hospitals Case

DO GREAT THINGS

Medical Center told ABC news that a foetus's hand between its legs is nothing more than "practising using their muscles." "Three studies have been done in human foetuses to examine the development of connections between nerves," Perriera said. "And we don't think those connections start to form until somewhere between 23 and 30 weeks gestation." The bill is scheduled for a House vote sometime Wednesday (Australian time). It's not expected to pass.

Andre Mulder - Woman Beater I wish someone can explain to me how exactly Namibian law operates. How is it that Andre almost sent this woman to her death and he walks away with a N$6 000 fine?? How does a qualified judge or lawyer believe a psychopath like Andre when he said he merely used his open palm to defend himself? When the previous article in NI 25.04.13 said, he came back for one last attack and said, "If she was not dead then, she is now"

while someone else was watching for fear of her own life. In actual fact he attacked one woman and put the fear of death in another. When does logic apply to all this - if he could do that to a woman, who is going to be his next target? People like this should be locked up for good and have the key thrown away. Who makes the final decision on these sentences and fines? The Court Roll has had cases like Fraud

N$7 000, Theft N$5 000, DUI N$4 000, House Breaking N$500 & Attempted Murder N$1 000. How do you pay N$6 000 for Attempted Murder and N$7 000 for Fraud and then on the next Attempted Murder case you pay N$1 000. We already can’t handle crime in Namibia. One would think, those criminals you can get your hands on, you would want to make an example of them - not set them free with a fine of N$6 000. By the way attempted murder carries a maximum penalty of life or 25 years imprisonment. Note that in order to be guilty of murder under the NSW Crimes Act, intent to cause grievous bodily harm is enough to secure a conviction for murder, as a felony murder (constructive murder in Australia). Thanks, Cleopatra

Treatment After Iridology Test

Following the Namib Independent’s article, ‘Mariska Smit Looking into your Soul’, optometrist Mariska this week shares treatments for each individual’s body. In the last article, Mariska looked into three people’s eyes, and gave each a report on what their eyes revealed about their past and present health stance.

“Once I have put you under the microscope and scrutiny-eyed you, and found what you are genetically prone to and which organs need to be detoxed; we look at basic dietary advice like some juicing recipes, enzyme based detox and balancing vitamins,” Mariska explains. In iridology practice, a person is categorised according to the colour and structure of the

iris. Their basic constitution makes them more prone to certain disease processes. Mariska says that a general dietary advice to all colour irises would be to keep their liver clean. “This is the garbage disposal unit in your body. It cleans your blood, breaks down fat and even translates hormones from the master hormonal gland in the brain so that other organs may understand what to do. So it is the cleaner, the breaker and the translator,” she explains. “I use a detox and vitamin range called Enzymme Process. This product has an excellent absorption rate, making it easier to detox. To explain how it works, let’s think of an orange. If you eat an orange you are getting vitamin C with all the enzymes in the

orange to tell you how to utilise the vitamin C. If you drink a vitamin without enzymes your body does not recognise the vitamin C and cannot use it to its full potential. Thus buying and using the correct products is integral to a successful detox and healthy you,” Mariska describes. Each person will be assessed separately, with the Enzymme Process usage already included. In the brown iris, the following tendencies were found: The liver needed a detox. There were hormonal imbalances, adrenal fatigue (high stress levels), IBS, dysglycemia but also an excellent genetic structure. Typical race horse phenomenon, they can run fast and recover quickly, but get over-stressed, which can lead to burn-out. This would result in the first mentioned anomalies. The treatment Mariska would suggest is, taking Liverchol to detox the liver. Then Adrennucleo would aid in balancing hormones, sugar levels and adrenal fatigue. Colonorm G is good for the IBS. She should also stay away from white flour products, which would practically create cement in her bowel. She should do some form of exercise to relax, Tai Chi for instance would work wonders. The blue iris showed signs of acidity, which typically means 'mucus'. Thus there is a tendency towards sinus problems, joint problems and urinary infections. The lung area on the iris showed dark areas, upon which the patient confirmed being a heavy smoker in his younger, more colourful days. The collagen structure was very good, which indicates a good recovery ability. The person also has good genetic structure.

“I would suggest Liverchol to detox and clean the liver and kidneys. Alkaplex brings down the acidic levels. Lung cytotrophin would build up the lungs. If he has not stopped smoking, he must stop immediately. Exercise is important to increase his lung capacity and he should stay away from an acidic diet,” Mariska explained. The mix showed a tendency of sugar imbalances, an over-active immune system and hormonal imbalances. The brain area showed that she could be prone to headaches. This would tie in with her case history of having migraines and she confirmed having related hormonal imbalances. A tendency of being acidic was also noted and the lymphatic system needed a detox. Her dark limbal ring may signify three things like a difficult child birth. Systemically, it could mean poor circulation in her skin zone, thus cold hands and feet. Emotionally, it could mean that she does not let people in easily, but once she lets them in she does not let go easily. “First rule is always to detox, thus Liverchol to aid with her headaches. Enzimmune helps to balance her immune system and lymphatic system. Adrennucleo would aid in hormonal imbalances and Alkaplex should improve the acidity. Sugar free diet and exercise for her poor circulation are a must. Emotionally she should be careful of abusive relationships since once she lets them in she does not let them go, but if she finds the right person... this is what love stories are written about.” Mariska does iridology tests with every eye test you book at Optic Exclusive.

m O shiwambo ST H IOR WA BO mO MOT O RM ING MO ING Mercedes Benz E63 AMG MATIC 2014

Brutal and Relentlessly Fast, E63 Those desirous of supercar performance with everyday practicality need look no further than the MercedesBenz E63 AMG. This car's ability to blend outrageous levels of power with traditional Mercedes comfort and a spacious interior is exceeded by few vehicles on the market. Recent Changes For the latest model year, Mercedes has fitted its executive rocketship with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive. This move results in even more outrageous acceleration, improved foul-weather capabilities and a new "E63 AMG 4MATIC" moniker. Other revisions include an upgraded engine and fresh styling. Overview As with most sporting machines, the heart of the E63 AMG 4MATIC is its engine a handmade 5.5-liter "Biturbo" V8. This twin-turbocharged and direct-injected monster was recently massaged to increase power from 386 Kw and 700 Nm of torque to 410 Kw and 720 Nm of twist. All E63 AMGs utilise a seven-speed "MCT" automatic transmission that ditches a conventional torque converter for a wet clutch pack that makes shifts quick and smooth, even at low speeds (something that cannot be said of competitors' dual clutch automatics). It features rev-matched downshifts and an "eco mode" that engages the stop/start system, which switches off the engine at idle to save fuel. The gearbox sends power to all four wheels via a performance-tuned version of Mercedes' 4MATIC all-wheeldrive system. The benefits of 4MATIC compared to the old rear-drive setup are numerous - it puts the sedan's massive power to the pavement more effectively, is four-seasonfriendly and, with a 33/67 front/rear output split under normal driving conditions,

maintains enjoyable rear-drive-like dynamics. A limited-slip rear diff - optional on the normal sedan and standard on the S-Model - further optimises traction, while the stability control system of all E63 AMG 4MATICs can be set to provide rear brakebased torque vectoring to minimise understeer. Helping to keep things under control when the road gets curvy is the AMG Ride Control sports suspension that features a specially designed front axle with a 1.9-inch increase in track width relative to the normal E-Class, in addition to independent wheel carriers for increased negative camber at the front to improve grip during performance driving. Should a red light or stop sign impede the driver's backroads fun, the E63 AMG 4MATIC is prepared for the occasion with six-piston front and fourpiston rear brakes with 14.2-inch cross-drilled rotors all around. Carbon ceramic brakes with massive 15.8-inch rotors for maximum stopping power are optional. Looking the Part Visually, the E63 AMG 4MATIC follows the form of its more pedestrian E-Class sedan brethren. Gone are the outgoing model's quad headlamps, replaced instead by a single lamp per side. A special AMG "A-wing" lower front fascia and a "twin-blade grille" mark the front end, and a body kit provides further stylistic spice. At the rear, the treatment is finished by a black diffuser insert and an AMG dual exhaust setup. The S-Model is distinguished by glossy black touches up front and a black "S" on the trunk lid. An optional mbrace system adds a host of cloudbased goodies, including a concierge service, location-based traffic and weather updates, stolen vehicle location assistance, automatic collision

notification and more. Available apps add internet browsing, Google local search with street view, Yelp reviews, Facebook access and news reports. Owners can even use an mbrace smartphone app to remotely lock, unlock or locate their sedan. Occupant Safety Mercedes-Benz has long been known for its safety features, and the E63 AMG 4MATIC will only add to that reputation. In addition

to traction and stability control systems, the car boasts nine supplemental restraints including two-stage front air bags, a knee air bag for the driver and pelvic air bags which work together with full-length side curtain and front side air bags (rear side units are optional) to provide extra protection for front occupants in dangerous sideimpact collisions. Also standard is an "Attention Assist" system that can alert the driver to the first signs of drowsiness. A steering sensor is coupled to smart software that uses 70 parameters to establish a unique driver profile during the first 20 minutes of driving.

Between 80 and 180 Km/h, the system identifies the erratic steering corrections drivers make as they begin to get drowsy and triggers an audible warning and a "Time for a Rest?" message with a coffee cup icon in the instrument cluster. Key Competitors Those shopping for a highperformance midsize sedan are in the delightful position of having several excellent options to choose from. Along with the E63 AMG 4MATIC, options include the legendary BMW M5, the rough-around-the-edges but extremely enjoyable Cadillac CTS-V and the overachieving Audi S6.

Doubles Kick Off in Squash League The competitiveness, fun and sportsmanship carry on from where the Socials ended as the Doubles kick off to a great start. The results for Wednesday 17th were as follows: Group A: Match Point (Imanuel Amorongo/Phillip de Villiers) bt Coastal Car Hire (Martin Krause/Henning du Plessis) 3-2. Imanuel/Phillip fought from 2-1. EAE Sparky’s (Michael Stauder/Trevor Heath) bt Beauty & the Beat (Jenny Pahl/Marius Geyser) 3-0. Michi/Trev were in top form. The sparks flew and the execution was great. Fuel Pump Repairs Africa (Jaco de Witt/Peter Pahl) bt Bossies (Dirk/Leslie Bosman) 3-0. There was no show of fuel starvation, as Jaco/Peter cruised to victory. Supa Surge (Ze de Britto/Sergio Figueiredo) bt Woermann Brock Hardware & Building Supplies (Danie Jansen/Peter Pahl) 3-2. Another great come

back. Ze/Serg 2-0 down found their groove and took the match with some super play. Group B: Steel Africa (Chris Bruyns/Doyle de Haas) bt Sambojo (Sam Webster/Joseph Payne) 3-2. Magic Ties (Poen/Cabous Olivier) bt Team MJ (Morne Fourie/Johan Swanepoel) 3-0. With a magic tough, Poena/Cabous pretty much had things their own way. Sibling Rivalry (Andre/Anina Huisamen) bt WiFii (Wernher Riedel/Lindsay Lottering) 3-2. The siblings connected. Wernher/Lindsay lost their connection. Matt & Annie (Matthuys Robberts/Anneke Grobler) bt Stingray (Raymond Duvenhage/Jaco Smit) 3-0. No doubt, Matthuys was very happy with Anneke as a reserve. They seemed to gel and took the sting out of Ray/Jaco’s play.

Great prizes were up for grabs.” said Mr Schalkwyk. 49 Players were in the field with 10, 2-clubs recorded. “The pins must have been on very generous places or was it the greens that are in such good condition?” joked Schalkwyk.

Madelaine Laubscher On 19 July a ceremony was held to celebrate the opening of the new changing rooms at Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS). African Maritime Services (AMS) sponsored WBPHS rugby coach clothing. African Maritime Services AMS have always wanted to give something back to the community of Walvis Bay and Walvis Bay Private High School WBPHS became their target when they were approached by them. Branch Manager, Miss Toni Eremkin, and General Manager, Mr. Andrew Wallace of AMS, decided to sponsor all the rugby coaches clothing for the current season. “AMS has drive, ambition, commitment and a good reputation. That is why we decided to sponsor the rugby coaches clothing for the current season, because we feel that WBPHS share the same qualities as we do,” said Mr. Wallace. A heartfelt ceremony was held to celebrate this event as well as the opening of the new sports changing rooms.

“Sports is increasingly becoming an integral part of a young boy's or a young girl's academic development,. Sport and academics go hand in hand and teach youngsters respect, good manners, togetherness and teamwork which are core values in life. This allows these youngsters to one day develop into great men and women. Great customer service at AMS is very important to us so we believe in the same core values as WBPHS which contribute to us realising our mission statement that we are ‘more a partner than just a supplier,” said Miss Eremkin. AMS have been operating in Namibia for over 12 years supplying commercial fishing, towing, mooring and lifting gear. The association with WBPHS is one AMS hope to continue. In future AMS plan to expand sponsorship to all the sports coaches at WBPHS. “We at AMS believe sport and education to be an integral part of the development of the youth of Walvis Bay for the future” Mr. Wallace concluded.
