Child Killer Dies in Freak Accident Whilst Fleeing Murder Scene Tanya Calitz An alleged murderer was killed minutes after stabbing a 16 year old girl to death in broad daylight.

According to Inspector Iikuyu from the Walvis Bay Police, 16-year-old Johanna Nantapo was heading towards school when 23-year-old Mukonda Jonas attacked her. “The deceased suspect attacked Nantapo approximately 211 metres into the desert from the ‘Welcome to Walvis Bay’ sign, at around 7:30am this morning (Wednesday),” Inspector Iikuyu confirmed to the Namib Independent. According to the Inspector, it appears that the suspect did not

know the victim personally. “From what we have gathered through our investigations, the deceased suspect was not in any form of relationship with the murdered 16-year-old victim, nor was he a family member or friend,” Iikuyu said. Apparently after the suspect stabbed his victim to death, he fled the scene and ran towards the B2 road. The suspect then ran across the road, and was hit by an oncoming truck. He was killed on impact. “It is not yet clear whether the deceased suspect ran in front of the truck on purpose to commit suicide, or whether it happened by accident,” Iikuyu said. Nampol

has also opened a case of culpable homicide against the truck driver. According to bystanders the suspect sustained very gruesome injuries after being hit by the truck. The victim (Nantapo) suffered five fatal stab wounds to the neck and several stab wounds to the chest, stated Iikuyu. A full investigation will be lodged to establish the motive behind the murder of Nantapo, as well as the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of the suspect after fleeing the murder scene. Drunken Intercape Bus Driver Gets Off Scot-Free

Continued from Page 1

leave the passengers of Intercape dumbfounded and enraged after the gruelling ordeal they experienced on Monday when the driver embarked on what can only be described as a reckless joy ride between Walvis Bay and Okahandja. According to one of the passengers, a teenage girl who sat in the front seat, suspicion arose when the Intercape quantum bus arrived one hour late in Swakopmund and the driver refused to tag their luggage with appropriate stickers. When the bus arrived in Usakos, the driver allegedly made an unscheduled stop claiming to go to

the bank. “He came back smelling like a bar,” says the distraught passenger. Communicating over text messages, she relayed her experience to her mother, Ms Estelle Slabbert, who wasted no time in contacting Intercape. According to Ms Slabbert, Intercape acted swiftly in intercepting the bus and were gravely concerned in regards to the matter. In an official statement from Intercape Management, they confirmed that they had personally contacted the police in Okahandja to take action and investigate the claims of the alleged drunken driver.

However, she was baffled that after notifying the Intercape Windhoek office, the driver covered a further 90 kilometres before finally being apprehended by a lone police car 10 kilometres before Okahandja. According to the passengers on the bus, during the transit period the driver picked up another two passengers in Karibib, whom had not booked seats but instead paid the bus driver N$100 each, well below the standard price of N$220. En route to Okahandja the driver randomly pulled over to relieve himself, narrowly avoiding hitting a warthog and on-coming traffic, and allegedly reached speeds

of up to 140 km/h in a 95 zone, the passengers told the Namib Independent upon arriving in Windhoek. According to Intercape, a driver was sent from Windhoek to replace the accused when he was finally arrested. According to one passenger, no breathalyser test was initiated by the traffic officer. By 4pm the 14-seater quantum mini-bus, plate number N72681W, arrived at the Windhoek station. The passengers were visibly disturbed and frustrated. Intercape stated that they are “sincerely grateful to the passengers for calling in the incident”.

Yet, no mention of a refund or compensation to the passengers was made. Intercape also confirmed that the driver has been suspended, pending an internal disciplinary hearing to be held this week. So, the public as well as the passengers are left to wonder why the alcohol blood tests in Okahandja are expired and why a breathalyser test wasn’t conducted. How come, as an alternate solution, the driver wasn’t taken to a nearby clinic or ambulance where these test could have been done? By the time of going to print, no further information regarding the case could be gathered.

New Online Radio Increased Trade Great Station Launched and Broadcasting from Walvis

Tanya Calitz The online radio station Radio Eros was recently launched in Walvis Bay and is now broadcasting from its studio at the Waterfront Boardwalk. Station Manager, Mr Andreas Thiemann, afforded the Namib Independent some time to chat about their aim and vision for the radio station. “The main aim of Radio Eros is to be good ambassadors for Namibia by broadcasting to the outside world, informing them of all the happenings in our country. We want to inform the rest of the world about Namibia, and market it as a tourism destination,” said Thiemann. In his experience the rest of the world is not aware of Namibia as an independent country, or the fact that it is just one of the 52 countries on the African continent. “We are hoping by launching this radio station we will educate and inform the world of Namibia,” he said. Thiemann explained that their target market, in order to be a profitable business, is the tourism industry in Namibia. “All our advertisers are people within the tourism industry, or people who want to market their goods and services to the outside world,” he explained. “We already have listeners from all over the world. We have a program online which can detect where our listeners are tuned in from, and we have listeners from South America, Europe and North America.” According to

Thiemann their biggest challenge at the moment is the internet connection. “We have been experiencing a lot of technical internet issue in Walvis Bay, and have had to make use of our emergency broadcast centre in Chicago, Illinois,” he laid out. Thiemann started out as a computer programmer, but later pursued his love for the media, by studying Journalism in New York. He then went on to become the Station Manager at Kudu FM, and has since worked in the radio and media industry. “I have an absolute passion for radio and broadcasting,” he said. “Our other aim is to keep our listeners tuned in by providing them with very interesting, and diverse content. We feature a lot of local talent and artist, as well as prominent figures in the tourism sector,” Thiemann added. Currently Radio Eros has three permanent employees, and is hoping to gradually increase the team to 8 full time staff members. “We are moving towards becoming a full commercial radio station, and by September we should be in full swing, with our website also fully functional,” he said. Currently the radio station is only online, but they are looking into maybe broadcasting on an AM frequency. To tune into Radio Eros, you can use the Tune-in App on the Smartphones, or tune in via their website, www. radioeros.com. Interested parties can also drop the team a mail at studio@ radioeros.com.

for Town's Future Says Municipality

Clementine Aweses The rapid growth of cargo coming via the Walvis Bay Corridor has resulted in the Walvis Bay Municipality basking in the sunshine of benefits but at the same time pondering on finding solutions to newly-arisen challenges.

Kevin Adams, Spokesperson of the Municipality, said the Municipality is benefitting from spinoffs of the ever growing increase in cargo handled by Namport, which has caused the same to embark on mega expansion programs. “Obviously Namport’s rapid growth will have both positive and negative impacts on Walvis Bay. The ideal would be to have more positive than negative effects,” Adams replied. He outlined that the demand for serviced land has skyrocketed. The Authorities are now faced with a substantial backlog of serviced land that the municipality will address proactively by establishing new townships and servicing between 1,500 and 2,000 new erven. There appears to have

been an increase in selfcatering and Bed and Breakfast units, especially in Kuisebmond and Narraville. The growth of the port has also prompted the opening up of more restaurants and fast foods outlets. In general, Adams added, the number of business registrations increased by 40.2% between 2011 and 2012. In 2007, new businesses numbered 526, while it is projected that the figure will be between 950 and 1000 by the end of 2013. Currently there are about 4 000 registered businesses operating in Walvis Bay. Namport’s growth has also created job opportunities for locals and prompted others to start businesses related to port activities other than the construction industry. Adams explained that the growth has brought increased educational and skills transfer opportunities. “The growth of Namport has contributed to a skills transfer and brought educational opportunities to Namibians due to the fact that specialised skills are needed for the handling of some equipment.”

There has been notable economic growth in the construction industry and port-related activities such as clearing agents and transport businesses. However, the growth has also come with challenges that the municipality has to contend with. Adams said residents and businesses close to the existing stacking area for containers have complained about noise and dust pollution coming from the operations. “It is envisaged that the new container terminal, because it would be further away from the residential and business area, might bring some relief in this regard, although there might be an increase in this type of pollution during the construction phase of the terminal. During dredging, sulphur dioxide may be released which could emit unpleasant odours causing inconvenience to the nearby residents,” Adams said. Another issue of concern is that the current stacking area is creating a visual barrier to nearby houses and businesses. Commenting on challenges concerning health Adams said the transport sector is linked to risks associated with HIV infection. “The rapid growth in road transport to and from Walvis Bay could lead to an increase in HIV/AIDS cases, seeing that this type of industry is often associated with prostitution. However, one should be careful in making such projections, especially in view of the fact that the infection rates of diseases such as HIV/ AIDS and TB have been drastically reduced over the past decade or so.” The fastest and most lucrative sector for Namport, the car imports, seems to have overwhelmed the municipal law enforcing agents. Adams contends that while the municipality requires written proof from clearing agents that a yard in the industrial area will be used to park cars and large vehicles after being cleared by Customs, it has become difficult to ascertain because most clearing agents have offices in town. “Although agents maintain that the vehicles are driven out of town as soon as they are cleared, this does not always appear to be the case. This creates a problem as there are not enough public toilets and parking space and the drivers often wash and service the vehicles in the street. Once the various stakeholders meet more regularly to address shortcomings, the situation might improve,” Adams noted.

Slice of Bank Windhoek

Social Responsibility

Pie Tiny for Coast Clementine Aweses In a recently published report by Bank Windhoek outlining its allocation of N$ 6 million to its social investment fund the coastal towns appear to be the recipients of the miniscule amount of N$37 000.

Besides this there are only intangible amounts gained through national sponsorships, which have a trickledown effect to the coast. According to Bank Windhoek’s Corporate Social Investment Report for the period ending 30 June 2013 the overall investment of N$6 million from the fund is used specifically for community upliftment. During the period under review the Bank enabled the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF) to host the Bank Windhoek Namibian Open Beach Volleyball Championships at the Mole in Swakopmund with a sponsorship of N$30 000. The tournament took place

during the Independence weekend of 22-23 March 2013. A coaching clinic for beginners and youth also took place on 21 March 2013, a report issued by the Bank said. The bank contributed N$7 000 towards the hosting of the Bank Windhoek Swakop Unites In Music Festival. The money went towards the development of art amongst the youth in Swakopmund. Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment Services, said in response to Namib Independent’s enquiry on the apparent low investment in Erongo Region, “As a 100% Namibian bank, we do not see one region of Namibia as more important than another region, but each application is treated on merit, using our policies and sound business principles as guidelines when determining whether an application is successful or not,” he said, adding that the Bank announced growth

in its allocation of sponsorships and Social Investment Fund for the 2013/2014 financial year. The amounts will be reflected in the next annual report. “Many of our projects are national projects, to the benefit of the whole country and not a specific region. Through our coastal branches we also continue to support a number of local projects and events in the Erongo Region.” When asked if the bank could break down the value of the of the trickledown funds from the national projects specifically for the coast, van Rooyen stated that to do so would not be worthwhile. “The Bank Windhoek Arts Festival also staged a number of events at the coast, with an emphasis on the peak holiday periods. Our biggest sport sponsorship, being to Athletics Namibia, directly benefited the athletes at the coast, with one grand prix event held in Swakopmund,” van Rooyen concluded.

De Duine School Strides in Prosperity Health’s Healing Hands Master Maths

Knowledge for the future. Six of the eight Grade 12s from De Duine Secondary School who are supported by the Prosperity Group at Master Maths The candidates sponsored by Prosperity Group's Healing Hands initiative for Master Maths are doing well, says Director of Development for the Prosperity Group, Johan Struwig.

The Prosperity Group announced the sponsorship during episode 10 of Healing Hands flighted on One Africa Television and Radiowave. The initiative gives the eight most promosing students from De Duine High School in Walvis Bay supporting tuition in maths and science. "Healing Hands was launched to provide special care for medical cases which would not qualify for assistance due to the circumstances of the beneficiary. It has excelled at that. The choice of assistance to the Master Maths candidates fell outside of the Group's guidelines, but we felt that it was particularly worthy on various levels, so we added it to the list of causes that we support," said Struwig. "We are aware of the critical need for maths and science to develop a future for Namibia. The decision to support the learners of De Duine was driven by the understanding that development of these skills at secondary level gives a jump start to the beneficiaries, and will ripple out into Namibia and the community of Walvis Bay," Struwig added. "The opportunity came to us

through Nico van Rooyen and Elthea Fourie of Master Maths who identified promising individuals in the community who lacked the financial means to attend extra tuition," he said. "We started out with twenty learners in Grade 10," Struwig explained. "Some of these did not enter into the Grade 11 programme, so we provided N$40,000 to support eleven learners in 2012. The remaining eight in 2013 will receive support to the value of N$80,000." "We have high hopes for the remaining Grade 12s, at least one of which is that some of them might enter the medical profession. If they attend universities or other tertiary training and enter the market with professional qualifications or contribute to the industry, we believe that the Prosperity Group will have made a difference." Asked about how the benefits could be extended, Struwig said that there are several ways in which the programme can be extended. “We challenge the industry to find and support maths and science initiatives, particularly at secondary school level where it is most critical. Master Maths in Walvis Bay will assist companies who want to make contact with the candidates with a view to financial support for tertiary education," he said.

A programme for success. The Prosperity Group is supporting eight Grade 12 learners from De Duine Secondary School to attend support classes at MasterMaths

1800 Permanent Vacancies

to Fill at Husab Mine

Swakop Uranium announced last week that they are going to fill at least 1800 permanent positions at the new Husab Mine Project, and are already looking for staff.

Swakop Uranium is currently building what would be the world’s second largest uranium mine about 60 km from Swakopmund in the desert. Although the mine will only become operational in the second half of 2015, Swakop Uranium wants to mobilise and train its permanent staff complement well in advance. According to Percy McCallum, Swakop Uranium’s Director of Human Resources, the focus is on ensuring operational

readiness by building the strength of the Swakop Uranium team. “Our aim is to attract and retain skilled individuals and to coach and mentor emerging talent, so that the company can ensure it has a world-class pool of Namibian employees.” Therefore, talented, careerorientated Namibian professionals who are looking for stimulating careers in a challenging environment are encouraged to send their CVs to Swakop Uranium. Although all permanent jobs will be advertised in the media and also on the Swakop Uranium website, www.swakopuranium.com, the company encourages suitably qualified professionals to apply, even if it is not in response to an advertisement. “We will first consider all Namibian applicants. If no suitable Namibian skills are available, then non-Namibians will be considered in line with current legislation.” Percy stresses that Swakop Uranium is a Greenfield Development that offers stimulating and challenging roles for talented people to develop their careers. “We are an international company

N$15 Million Security TransNamib Ponders

Scanners for Namport Over Accidents Clementine Aweses The Ministry of Finance is installing two scanners at the Namport to beef up security as the volume of cargo coming through the port increases.

The cost of acquiring the scanners is estimated at N$15 million dollars but the line ministry did not respond to questions submitted by the Namib Independent close to a month ago. Last minute efforts to get in touch with Permanent Secretary Erica Shifuda were also fruitless.

Namport’s Manager for Corporate Communications, Liz Sibindi, said the installation of the scanners will improve the turnaround time for cargo clearing. All imports and exports containers will be scanned (in 5 minutes per scan) to curb illicit activities and/or misdiagnosis/ under-declaration of container content amongst others. Sibindi said personnel from the Ministry of Finance will operate the scanning machines. “In order to be the best performing port in Africa, we

are to ensure that our service delivery merges the world-class standard. "As the business grows, we become vulnerable to opportunistic criminal activities in the industry,” said Sibindi, as the Authority envisages to attain its best performing port goals. The scanners will augment the service provided by sniffer dogs donated to Namport by Nampol and will help to deter criminals from using Namibia as a destination and transit route for drugs.

Namport Scanners in the making

Clementine Aweses The public is concerned about the frequency of accidents involving trains in Walvis Bay, which have resulted in loss of life and injuries. Last week, the fourth accident in three weeks send tongues wagging about the safety of motorists and pedestrians. Contacted for comment on what TransNamib is doing to minimise the frequency of accidents at the rail crossings, Isai Haikela, Executive Assistant at TransNamib, said the company is equally concerned about the rate of accidents. The management is already back at the drawing board in order to come up with solutions. “We regret the unfortunate accidents. And we are equally concerned about the maiming of victims and loss of life. As much as the public is concerned, we are more concerned because it means loss of life, liabilities and claims. We are trying our best to ensure the safety of the people,” Haikela said. He assured that the organisation will meet

obligations on its part in as far as rectifying areas that need TransNamib’s attention. “We will do our part and we are busy compiling a country wide education campaign on road safety to educate the public and members of our staff in order to operate in a safe environment,” Haikela said. He however urged members of the public to also play their part by exercising caution when crossing the rails and not ignore the signs at the crossing. Haikela said sometimes children play on the railway tracks and some run after the trains or put stones on the tracks. The public in turn has expressed concern over the absence of a fence to restrict access by children to the railway line in areas where it runs near residential areas. Namport’s Liz Sibindi said the railway network plays an important part in the operations at the harbour, transportation of goods and in the SADC region. “The service is needed and so we will provide TransNamib with the required assistance to ensure the safety of all users,” Sibindi said.

Women’s Summit to be Hosted in Swakopmund The theme for the 7th Namibian Women’s Summit, which will be held in Swakopmund next week Wednesday, is ‘Let Your Light Shine Through’. The First Namibian Women’s Summit was hosted in Windhoek in 2007 as a way of Namibian women creating a platform to learn from one another, share best practices and network with each other. "This annual event has become a special calendar event for most women in Namibia. There have been successful summits since 2007 and the number of participants has been increasing with each passing year,” says Anne Thandeka Gebhardt, President of the Namibian Women Summit. The 7th Namibian Women Summit 2013 is the first to be hosted outside Windhoek. House of Women (HOW), together with the Erongo Women Councillors are looking forward to hosting over 300 delegates in Swakopmund on the 7th and 8th August 2013. “We would like to invite women from all walks of life and industry. This includes, female entrepreneurs, female Ministers, Members of Parliament, Governors and Councillors, women in leadership and decision-making positions in both private and public sectors, women managers/supervisors, and emerging young women from all

sectors,” Gebhardt stated. This year’s summit will have stimulating sessions designed to benefit each delegate. Some of the highlights for this year’s summit include; The First Lady, Madam Penehupifo Pohamba, who will officially open the Summit, the Right Honourable Prime Minister Dr Hage Geingob, who will be the Guest of Honour at the Entertainment and Fundraising Dinner, as well as the Honourable Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Calle Schlettwein, who will share his ministry’s offerings for the entrepreneurs, and last but not least the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Honourable Rosalia Nghidinwa, who will open a panel discussion on Violence Against Women. The summit will also host separate panel sessions on specific topics by well qualified local, regional and international presenters. These sessions will be specifically designed to address issues affecting the participants. Participation Cost (including all summit sessions, networking, all meals & entertainment) for the three days is N$2 000.00 per local delegate or US$200.00 per international participant. Namibia Intensifies Locals' Training Clementine Aweses In the four years that DORMAC Marine Engineering Namibia has been operational, the company has invested in excess of N$30 million and trained over 600 artisans in its stables, says Chris Sparg, Managing Director. This he told delegates at the official opening of the firm’s engineering workshop in Walvis Bay last Friday.

Sparg said that when the company opened the Namibian branch, it was agreed that DORMAC Namibia would be run as a standalone and truly Namibian company that would re-invest in itself in Namibia. “And this is exactly what we have done.” Authenticating the firm’s commitment, Sparg told the delegates that the workshop was designed and fully contracted in Namibia. “Every cent that was spent on this development was invested locally in Namibia. Even the sophisticated cranes and equipment orders were placed with Namibian companies,” he emphasised. Over the 15 month construction period, numerous workers and engineers were gainfully employed. The workshop has a 50 tonne crane capacity and is 13.5m under hook, which makes the facility the largest capacity facility on the coast of Namibia. Sparg added that his company has a commendable reputation for training and development and is recognised as an industry leader. He attributed the awarding of mega projects to his company to its excellence in provision of engineering services. “We execute very large projects, some exceeding one million manufacturing hours…Namibia has a close proximity to West Africa oil and gas markets. Our intention is to draw work into Namibia and to use our Namibian skills to execute projects in West Africa. This workshop is specifically designed for the overhaul and fabrication of large equipment associated with oil and gas,” Sparg said. He further stated that the organisation’s foothold is anchored on having a skilled, stable, motivated, productive and competent workforce, using well proven artisan training programs. These have churned out skilful women and men who have gained international recognition from DORMAC’s clients. The Namibian supervision team that has lead teams to work on various projects in and outside Namibia has been used to secure work on oil rigs in Gabon, Angola and Mauritania as well as Suldanha Bay in South Africa.

Swakop Ready for Tourism Summit

Clementine Aweses Namibia stands to benefit significantly from the spinoffs of the networking opportunities, exchange of ideas and experiences from different parts of the world by hosting the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) said Martin Wiemers, Project Manager.

More than 700 delegates

are expected to attend the Summit. These include chief executive officers of tourism companies, executives from other tourism boards and journalists of internationally recognised publications such as the New York Times, National Geographic and Washington Times. “Preparations are going well and Team Destination Namibia is largely on target

in terms of the obligations that we have towards the owners of the ATWS 2013 event. The owners are the Adventure Travel Trade Association,” Wiemers stated. He explained that Swakopmund was chosen as a venue for the conference in order to spread the benefits of the event as much as possible. The ATWS will be

partly hosted in Windhoek and Swakopmund. Windhoek will host the opening event on 26 October in the Parliament Gardens and Swakopmund will host the conferencing part of the summit. “This is in addition to the 'Pre-Summit Adventures' that some delegates have booked to travel throughout Namibia and learn about the destination as well as the '2 Days of Adventure' that most delegates will travel on,” Wiemers explained. However, accessibility to Namibia during peak periods proves a challenge and it is difficult to get delegates to Namibia on their preferred dates. “If Namibia wants to continue to grow as a tourism destination we would need to improve accessibility to the destination from different parts of the world,” Wiemers cautioned. Annalize Swart, Executive Assistant of Swakopmund Municipality, said the town is ready to host the summit. “We are happy to host the conference. On our part we have enough water and other amenities, and adequate manpower for refuse removal. We are ready,” she said. An upbeat Sem Shikongo, Director of the Directorate of Tourism, said Swakopmund was chosen because it is widely viewed as the adventure centre of Namibia. Only in Swakop can you sand board, go on a boat cruise, view

marine life or even paraglide, Shikongo said of the suitability of the conference venue. He also commended the unity between the public and private tourism sectors in working towards hosting a memorable Summit. “Our ideas have been big and bold and we are implementing them with great enthusiasm and vigour. We are on track and on budget,” Shikongo assured. He said the event is seen as the best destination marketing of the decade for Namibia. “With 700 leaders in tourism experiencing Namibia first hand, we expect that the Summit will be like one massive FAM trip. We expect delegates to return to their home countries with photos and stories. They will spread the news first hand through stories but we also expect many of these businesses to add additional Namibia itineraries to their destination portfolios,” Shikomgo said. The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) is the contractual partner of ATTA. They are hosting and organising the event in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. NTB together with the MOET, have created a 'public private partnership' by inviting and involving a private sector member as one of the Team Leaders, namely Gitta Paetzold, Chief Executive Officer of the Hospitality Association.

Fifty Shades Of Grey Sex Leads to Soaring Emergency Calls

Tanya Calitz On Sunday several church groups in Walvis Bay came together on the municipal grounds to feed the hungry in town.

Several Walvis Churches, the Jonathan Jacob Project and the Round Table all came together to provide the hungry with a lovely, healthy and hearty meat and vegetable soup and roll, as well as some clothes, blankets, toiletries and food hampers. As the team set

up their stand, people from all over town were soon attracted to the smell of fresh soup and sight of freebies. “This was a good learning experience for us all, when launching a similar type of project,” said Gerdus Kruger from the Jonathan Jacob Project. Many people not so much in need of help also came round to get their share of the free for all hand-outs. The soup kitchen even saw the likes of some taxi drivers stopping by for a free meal. “We think it will be better

to rather drive around town and hand out the food and supplies to the homeless directly, which will prevent the opportunists from stopping by and scoring a free meal. Instead it can then land up in the hands of the true homeless and hungry people of our community,” one of the church group leaders said. Regardless of the jackals, many hungry mouths were fed that day, and it is comforting to know that some people still care.

Kinky couples have been rescued by fire-fighters 79 times after sex games left them trapped in handcuffs. Crews today issued the warning, "If using handcuffs, keep the keys to hand" after they noticed a rise in unnecessary call-outs. London fire-fighter Dave Brown said: "I don't know whether it's the Fifty Shades of Grey effect, but the number of incidents involving items like handcuffs seems to have gone up. I'm sure most people will be Fifty Shades of red when our crews arrive." Other sex-related incidents dealt with by the London Fire Brigade included men with their privates stuck in vacuum cleaners and toasters. They were among more than 1,300 incidents involving people being trapped in household items in the past three years. Parents called for help 18 times for children with their heads wedged in potties or toilet seats. The bill for the daft calls came to £377,000. Source: The Daily Mirror (UK)

WORLD’S ONLY COCAINE BAR! What is believed to be the world's only commercial lounge openly serving cocaine operates in La Paz, Bolivia, though the owners of "Route 36" have to change locations from time to time, depending on the moods of the bribed authorities. A dispatch in London's The Guardian, reported that a nearly

pure gram costs the equivalent of about $14 ($22 for "premium"), served by waiters in an empty CD case, with straws, but bar drinks are also available. Route 36 is wellknown to backpacking tourists. Recalled one waiter, "We had some Australians; they stayed here for four days. The only time they left was to go to the ATM."

Salt Company Donates

ISWB Pop in at the

to Sunshine School Fire Department

From right: Irma Swart, Director and teacher at Walvis Bay Sunshine School; Elsa Murangi, Coordinator; Andre Synman, MD Salt Refineries; King Mandume Muatunga, Chairperson Walvis Bay Sunshine School Clementine Aweses Walvis Bay Salt Refiners (PTY) Ltd. donated N$130 000 to Walvis Bay Sunshine School on Monday. Speaking after the handover, Andre Synman, Managing Director of the salt company, said the company was happy to be associated with the school. “I am glad to see the extent to which Salt Refiners is involved with social responsibility, especially with Sunshine School. We assist them with transport for vulnerable kids and have decided to prolong and extend our financial support to those kids,” Synman assured the school authorities present.

Children are provided with transport from their home to the school and back. The total annual sponsorship to the school is in the region of N$150 000. For the past 18 years, Salt Refiners have been providing the transport service to the school. “We must make sure that the management of the initiative is in good order as we want to be associated with projects that are well managed. As long as the project is well managed we will be associated with the project,” Synman said. The company also provides equal amounts of bursaries to all schools in Walvis Bay, private as Government primary and high schools. Financial assistance is

also rendered to employees finding themselves struggling to pay school fees. Salt Refiners' annual Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) budget is N$800 000. Chairperson of Sunshine Walvis Bay School, King Mandume Muatunga, said the transport contribution offered by Salt Refiners is invaluable to the school, that has seen more physically handicapped children usually kept at home being able to attend school. “Your contribution in terms of transport added value to the school by being able to pick up children from Kuisebmond and Narraville and made people be open to be associated with the centre. I am grateful for parents who have offered to make contributions to the centre. The Coordinator of the School, Elsa Murangi, mentioned that said the school started in 1996 with four children but the enrolment has over the years risen to 85 children with different disabilities. The school has groomed sports icons like the likes of the Golden Girl Johanna Benson, and boxers Poppie Saghria and Reuben Soroseb.

As part of their educational program, the little students were taken on a visit to the Fire Department of Walvis Bay where they were treated to a show of firefighting, which was delightful as well as educational. The Eco Daily 4X4 offers an ideal combination of high payload and road performance. Icy tracks, rough ground, steep slopes and slippery roads are no obstacle to the new Eco Daily 4X4, which is designed to satisfy the needs of people doing tough jobs under rough conditions. The Eco Daily 4X4 specialises in winning challenges and arriving with ease where others dare not go. Tough, but generous and ecological at heart the Daily 4X4 respects the environment in which it works. With its new 3.0 litre, Euro3 homologated diesel engine, the Eco Daily 4X4 provides you all the power you need and thanks to a diesel Particulate filter fitted as standard it respects nature, too.

The secret of the Eco Daily 4X4’s strength lies in its truck-derived chassis, made from special highstrength steel beams to withstand the toughest use and equipped with gas shock absorbers and super-flexible parabolic springs. Structural parts, including the chassis, axles and suspension are designed to maximise gradeability and ground clearance. So you can carry on working under all conditions, with confidence and in total safety. The strong point of the Daily 4X4 is its robust chassis. The beams and cross members are made from high strength tubular steel, with a C-section of 5 mm. The result is a rigid structure capable of withstanding the torsional stress and fatigue typical of quarries, construction sites and extreme off road applications.

Special off road suspension means that your Eco Daily 4X4 can take you anywhere you want to go. The parabolic leaf springs are extremely flexible and permit impressive wheel travel. The axles, mounted on to leaf springs, guarantee stability and traction in even the toughest off-road conditions. The telescooic shock absorbers and anti-roll stabiliser bars coupled to the rigid axles offer excellent performance on any type of terrain and gradient without penalising load capacity. The driver seat provides three adjustments plus lumbar support and can optionally be heated and sprung. Passengers can enjoy the comfort of individual seats or a practical bench seat with waist belts or three point seat belts. This is a mean 4x4 and Iveco’s Eco

Energy saving tips Stove: • • •

Never use the stove or hot plate as a heater. The size of the pot should match the size of the stove plate. Rather use a pressure cooker when preparing food that normally takes a long time to cook.

Heater: • •

Electric heaters that are controlled by thermostats are more energy efficient. Only use heaters in rooms that are occupied.

Geyser: • • •

A geyser accounts for up to 40% of your electricity bill. Ensure that the thermostat is set to no more than 55 Degrees Celsius. Wrapping your geyser in an insulating blanket can reduce power consumption by half.

Kettle: • •

Only boil the amount of water that you need. Keep the kettle’s element clean by boiling vinegar to remove lime scale build up.

Light Bulbs: • •

Replace conventional bulbs with Compact Flourescent Light (CFL) or Light-Emitting Diode (LED) light bulbs where possible. These light bulbs provide the same amount of light while using much less electricity and they last longer. Always switch off lights when leaving a room.

Let’s work together and use electricity sparingly.

International School of Walvis Bay Introduces Their Sailors On Saturday, 27 July ISWB had a friendly sailing competition amongst the sailing students. It was held at the Yacht Club and mainly sponsored by Volvo. Parents were delighted and always cheering for their team. The students were competing in three groups, namely Men, Women and Beginners and all displayed great confidence on the water. The competition was a big success and the ISWB Sailing Club is looking forward to future fun.

Very Active Week for the Golf Club

23 Players took the field that ended in very windy conditions. It was so hot that some players sought relief in the club house and stayed there. Peet Poggenpoel finally got the results he was looking for and scored first place on 19 points c/o. 2nd place went to Speedcop Grobler on 19 points and Phillip Vorster got 3rd place, also on 19 points. The wooden spoon was shared by the three thirsty guys that left their playing partners alone out on the field. Heinie Franken, Wouter van Wijk and Kurt Brits, all with a no return. In another match which took place on the 27th of July, Rocco Viljoen walked away with the trophy. 34 Players rocked up for the true game of golf on Saturday. The club thanks Karin for the wonderful greens, which are difficult to maintain especially at this time of the year. They also would like to extend a big thank

you to JJ Fourie and Heino Golz of PISCS for continuing their yearly sponsorship. As it happens, a few fines were handed out on Saturday. They seemed to work wonders, and will be continued to remind everyone that golf is not without etiquette. Best Gross of the Day was played by Rocco Viljoen on 71; Best Nett was won by Mathew Stander on 68. A Division Best Nett was won by Patric Shigwele on 70; B Division best Nett went to Frans Grobler on 68 and in C Division, Ringer Heitman scored Best Nett on 71. Toens van der Merwe seems to be have been the first person in a long time that defended the Wooden Spoon successfully, scoring 126 Gross with 98 Nett. At least he enjoyed the P-Pot after the game. Wanderers Tickets There are Wanderers tickets available at the club. The next

draw is 14 September and the first prize is N$ 300 000. It's only N$ 1000 per ticket, which can also be bought in a group. Other Golf News Magic Discounters have completed the first batch of fencing for the club. Karin will be putting it up in due time. Thanks go to Axel, Poena and Connie for the big help, it is appreciated. Saturday there will be an individual Stableford competition sponsored by Build It Walvis Bay. It will be the first time Andre and Chante Joubert sponsor the club. The club asks that although there will be lots of other things happening in town players support Build It for stepping up and show them why Walvis Bay Golf Club is the best club in the country. Last but not least, there will be Sages on Sunday. All the older people will be there, but the rest is also welcome to play.
