Lifeline for the Waterfront Tanya Calitz Following an article in the Namib Independent at the beginning of the year, ‘Waterfront – The End’, the Namib Independent checked in with the Waterfront businesses to see what the future holds, and it seems that it is not quite the end yet. According to several business owners at the Waterfront they have not received any further notices that they should vacate the premises and close up shop. According to Namport’s Corporate Communications Manager, Liz Sibindi, the business owners can still renew their leases on a year to year basis, for now. “The development of the new Waterfront Marina is still on track, but one should keep in mind that it happens in phases, and that the Container Terminal and the Marina development are two different projects,” Sibindi said. According to her, the Container Terminal development, which forms part of the Port Expansion project, will see an earlier start than the Marina development. “The groundworks for the Container Terminal should not worry businesses, but one will only be able to tell for sure once operations are in full swing,” she stated.

Lifeline for the Waterfront

Continued from Page 1

According to Sibindi, tenders have gone out for both projects. The Waterfront business owners had a meeting with Namport. There they were told that they have at least another two years to continue with business as usual. “At the moment we are quite relaxed about the situation and not stressed about where to go from here. Namport also said that they have jumped the gun in sending pre-mature eviction letters out to businesses on the Waterfront,” the business owner told the Namib Independent earlier this week. “When we first opened up shop at the Waterfront we knew about Namport’s expansion and Waterfront development plans, so we cannot really say that it came

as a surprise,” another business owner shared. “We are just happy that our time on the Waterfront has been extended.” According to another business operator at the Waterfront, Namport said that the current business owners will have first option once the Marina Development has been completed. Namport will start with the surveillance phase for the Marina Project next year February, which gives the business owners some more time to operate from the existing Waterfront. “The surveillance process will not affect the businesses at all and Namport will continue their open discussions with stakeholders, and keep them updated on the endeavours,” Sibindi assured.

the school holidays started. “I saw the mother about a week before the school holidays started, and not again since that day, but did not really take notice of her whereabouts,” the concerned neighbour told the Namib Independent earlier this week. According to the older sister, their mother told them that she was going to the North, but did not indicate when she would be back. “My mom left me and my sister some maizemeal that I have to cook for us every day,” the girl told the Namib Independent. She also said that their mother has been away for almost three weeks already. “I have tried phoning her, but her cell phone is off,” the worried 11-year-old girl said. The neighbour reported that the girls knocked on their door three days ago, saying that they were scared and did not want to sleep alone anymore. They are staying with the

neighbour at the moment. The girls have an aunt who lives in Tutaleni, but were too scared to go stay with her. “Last time our mother went away for a long time we went to our auntie’s house, and when my mom came back she beat me and my sister for going to her, so now we are too scared to go there,” the girl said. According to the girls their father is a police officer in Otavi, but he could not be reached on the number the sisters provided. The case has been reported to a social worker from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, who investigated the abandonment report. Another social worker, approached by the Namib Independent for comment on the frequency of these types of incidents, stated that they occur quite often. “We know of quite a few cases where the parents just leave

their children behind to go to the North, and usually it reaches us as complaints through people who know the family. According to Erongo Region Deputy Commissioner Kashuupulwa from Nampol however, they do not have many reported cases of abandonment. “In an incident like this the parent(s) can be charged under the Child Protection Act, Act 33 of 1960 under section 18, with neglect and abandonment,” Kashuupulwa explained. According to her, when found guilty, they can receive a fine, not exceeding N$3102, or imprisonment not exceeding two years. Currently no charges have been laid against the mother. By the time of going to print, the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare could not be reached for comment on this matter. The girls are still with their neighbour.

Domestic Violence Keeps Nation Back - Erongo Deputy Commissioner Calls for Cooperation Dorcas Mhungu Following the recent Swapo Youth League Initiative, Erongo Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa is urging the public to join forces with the police in order to bring down crime. She said the initiative by the Swapo Party Youth League to mobilise stakeholders and find lasting solutions to the increase in crime in the region is commendable. However, efforts should not stop there. “It should not be a once-off initiative, it must continue mobilising the youth as we strive to fight crime – especially domestic violence, alcohol and drug abuse among women and the youth. Women are the mothers of the nation and from the youth we get leaders of tomorrow,” Kashuupulwa stated. “A country without productive and educated young people has no future and if women are empowered, the nation is empowered too.” She urged members of the public to feel free to alert police where there is domestic

violence and assured that the Police will protect the identity of informers. “To the people of Erongo region, inclusive of myself, we must support each other to fight the social evil called crime so that the region is safe and secure,” Kashuupulwa pressed. Statistics for Walvis Bay indicate that 147 cases of domestic violence were reported between February and July this year, with common assault cases topping the list. The highest numbers of cases were recorded in April with 33. Kashuupulwa added that in most cases, the cause of these crimes is alcohol abuse and jealousy. Meanwhile, the Swapo Party Youth League Secretary for Information Mobilisation and Publicity, Manfried Likoro, said a committee was set up following the Youth League organised meeting to collectively work to reduce crime in the region. Relevant stakeholders will be involved to implement resolutions passed. In case of any emergency, phone the Erongo emergency number: 081 485 0954.

Barrel & Grove Brings Some Sophistication to the Coast Tanya Calitz

The French restaurant, Lyon des Sables, hosted a wine tasting for the folks from Barrel and Grove - Wine and Olive Merchants - from the Western Cape to promote the Riebeeck Valley on the Coast. Namibian born Moira Alberts has been living in the Riebeeck Valley, situated in the Western Cape less than 100 kilometres from Cape Town, for a few years now. She established her company, Barrel & Grove, to promote the lovely products produced and grown in that valley. “I think the Riebeeck Valley is much unrepresented in Namibia, so I thought I would take the opportunity to fill the gap and market some wines and products from that region,” said Moira. Various varieties of Swartland Wines were on display to taste, and soon attracted quite a crowd. French Restaurant owner and Sommelier, Virgile Meiller, took the

Twin Miracle at 52 Years Dorcas Mhungu Against all odds, Brenda Eiseb, 57, conceived and carried out absolutely healthy twins at the ripe age of 51. At the time, Brenda lived in South Africa with her Nigerian fiancée. He was in Nigeria when she, suspecting nothing, missed two periods in a row. “I skipped my menses for two months but I did not suspect that I was pregnant. My Nigerian fiancée had just gone back home to convince his parents to allow him to marry me despite the fact that I was not pregnant, as required by the Nigerian culture.

When he went to Nigeria I was already pregnant but I didn’t know it and he didn’t know either,” Brenda told me. This is nothing unusual, as around that age women go into menopause; the periods slowly subside and fertility decreases rapidly. It was only when Brenda felt her stomach was hard that she went to see a doctor because she was scared of a tumour. After carrying out blood and urine tests the doctor called her and asked her to immediately see her regarding the tests results. “When I got to the doctor, she delivered the shocking news that

I was pregnant and said I needed to be scanned. She warned that at my advanced age the chances of getting an abnormal baby were very high and strongly advocated an abortion, but I refused,” said Brenda as she cuddled pretty and handsome Alexandria and Alexander, 5. However, after the birth of the twins, she was retrenched from the manufacturing company she had been working for in South Africa. She eventually decided to come back to Namibia but has been struggling with something called ageism. This happens when society regards older people as debilitated, unworthy of attention or unsuitable for employment simply because they are “old”. Despite holding a qualification in Management from the University of Cape Town and having years of Managing experience, Brenda has been

unable to find another job. Currently Brenda is living on hand-outs from church members and Gillian van Lingen, who buys electricity for her and once offered her casual employment. “I am sitting here with these two children but I do not want charity. I need a job because I have the qualifications and I can still work another ten years. I can even make tea so long as I get a salary to look after my children,” explained Brenda. Brenda thinks that if only employers were not be guided by age but by visual assessment and experience, she would have been employed a long time ago. She finds that even if there were a skills shortage in Namibia, people’s attitude towards skilled seniors is certainly not helping.

Neighbourhood Watch Retrieves Stolen Items in Swift Response Lavrenty Repin On Thursday morning, 03:15 am, Neighbourhood Watch members were informed of a break-in at a local Swakopmund business, Charly's Desert Tours. The Neighbourhood Watch responded swiftly, deploying men at the sea fisheries and the old swimming pool parking. The rest made their way down toward the beach in the hopes of intercepting the thieves. An eye witness identified one of the men in front of the Europa Hof Hotel.

The Neighbourhood Watch immediately apprehended the three men. Upon searching them, 11 stops of data were found in their possession. After questioning, the three men admitted the crime and eventually took Neighbourhood Watch to a flat where the stolen Television was also found. The men were then taken to Swakopmund Police Station. Statements were made by the eye witness, owner of the flat and G4S. It is unclear whether the men have been charged at this point.

Shooting from the Hip and Loving it

Tanya Calitz Walvis Bay couple Lorraine Leippert and Quintin Maritz just made their lifelong dream come true. Leaving behind the shipping industry, they turned Quintin’s hobby – arms and ammunition – into a feasible business. “Arms is a lifelong passion of Quintin.

When we started a family we decided to pursue his passion to enable us to have more family time. We never thought that we would be able to make a living of our hobby, but we did and it is working,” says Lorraine, Quintin’s life-partner. Both of them come from a shipping background, which took up a lot of their time. After the birth of their child, they

decided to open up their own business to be able to spend more quality time together. According to Quintin it took five months from idea to open doors. “We approached the shop’s previous owner and bought his dealer’s license. Whilst waiting for the paperwork to get finalised we purchased stock. We officially opened the shop under new

management earlier this year,” says Quintin. Lorraine finds that life is a lot less stressful when a hobby becomes your job, and owning your own business comes with a lot of satisfaction. “It is a pleasing feeling when a client buys a firearm and they return with photos from their hunting trip. Their faces and the stories you hear are wonderful. Nothing beats the feeling of a satisfied client,” she lays out. In a free market, however, the competition can be tough. I asked Hotshots owners what set their business apart from other arms dealers in Erongo. “In the past, most hunting and gun

enthusiasts had to order goods from Windhoek as the coastal gun shops did not carry a wide variety of stock. We have a wide variety of arms, ammunition and accessories. Most clients can walk in and buy what they want; that is what sets us apart,” explains Lorraine. According to Quintin they try to always have the latest and newest stock available in the shop. “I do a trip to Windhoek almost every week in search of the latest goods and gadgets,” he tells me. Hunting enthusiasts on the coast are lucky to have such a dedicated couple nearby, who managed to break out of the day-to-day hamster wheel and are living their dream.

Namibia to Benefit from CASTLE

Lager and FC Barcelona Partnership

Following the announcement of a three-year partnership formed between Africa’s premier Lager, CASTLE Lager, and one of the world’s most popular football clubs, FC Barcelona, in Spain recently, today sees the launch of the partnership in Namibia. This partnership makes CASTLE Lager the official African beer of FC Barcelona in Namibia and 10 other countries on the continent, and of any activity that FC Barcelona engages in across these markets. “This partnership will result in benefits for CASTLE Lager consumers and FC Barcelona fans in Namibia through a number of local promotional activities and will also quickly boost the team’s popularity in Namibia and on the continent,” commented Cobus Bruwer, Managing Director of CASTLE Brewing Namibia.

This is the first time that FC Barcelona has signed a partnership agreement with an African-based company, which will open the door for FC Barcelona fans in Namibia and other select countries across the continent to have easier access to their favourite club’s merchandise and memorabilia. “We are delighted about signing this partnership with a world renowned brand such as CASTLE Lager. We identify with CASTLE Lager which, similar to our club, holds more than 100 years of history and great tradition. We also share with them our passion for football and supporters in a very important market such as Africa,” said Mr Javier Faus, Vice President of the Economic and Strategic Area at FC Barcelona. The CASTLE Lager brand has a longstanding involvement in

football in Africa, spanning a period of 85 years and currently sponsors various football leagues in Zimbabwe, Swaziland, Botswana and Lesotho. In addition, CASTLE Lager is also a sponsor of two regional football competitions, namely the COSAFA Cup held in Southern Africa and CECAFA held in East

Africa. With European football having gained immense popularity with fans across the African continent, CASTLE Lager has for many years been the broadcast partner of various football competitions, providing fans with the opportunity to watch televised matches of the European

Championships, the Barclays Premier League and the Spanish La Liga. CASTLE Lager consumers, along with FC Barcelona fans in Namibia, can now look forward to great football experiences, as this partnership brings them the best of both worlds.

Art Exhibition Empowering Namibian Women Lavrenty Repin

This Saturday marks the last day to go witness some genuine Namibian embroidery artwork displayed at the Woermann Haus Art Gallery. It is also a perfect occasion to buy a pillow-case or tablecloth that will not only beautify your home but also contribute to the well-being of fellow Namibians. Started in 1983 by the Lacheiner-

Kahn family, !Khoba is a community project that aims to help and empower Namibian women. The name, loosely translated from San, means “wild animals of Africa”. Since its beginning 30 years ago on a farm outside Otjiwarongo, !Khoba has spread around the country and helped over 1000 women to better their life through art. The demand for the made artwork has been good, from

tourists and locals alike. It’s easy to see why. Just come visit the gallery and experience for yourself the ingenuity and originality of simple textile embroidery. !Khoba is not simply a matter of providing an income for women in this community-based project, it has also earned them a feeling of fulfilment, self-esteem and a recognition of their worth in their family and community.

Miss Visfees Competition Raises Questions Opinion Piece by Lavrenty Repin Visfees is an ever-growing event, and this year the presence of popular South African band Snotkop brought families from all over Namibia to celebrate the weekend in true Afrikaans style, with braai, fish, beer and tons of fun. Jumping castles, balloons and plenty of different performers entertained the crowd and especially the kids who crowded the front of the stage and stood mesmerised by the various acts. It is against this comfortable, cheerful and pleasant backdrop

that a modelling show of questionable ethics took place. Although, thankfully, a far cry from last year’s outrageous “toddlers in bikinis” antic, it still felt a little odd watching girls barely in their teens, drowned in make-up, parading in skimpy outfits. They were cheered on by the crowd as they made their way up the stage to the tune of Robin Thikes’ song Blurred Lines (which has caused controversy for apparently promoting rape). Especially odd, almost creepy, was when the Master of Ceremonies hugged the 12-year-old crown winner and said, “Dit is die Visfees,

hulle moet bikinis aantrek!” A similar issue was raised by the Namib Independent last year, 'Sexualisation of Coastal Tots?', and caused quite a frenzy. I suppose if this had been a modelling competition at a high school, where certain moral guidelines are easier to follow and the audience is of the same age-range it wouldn’t have been as staggering. However in this case, the crowd was predominantly made up of adults in their 40s and toddlers, who’re easily susceptible to the attention their older peers receive through only physical appearance. Bianca Nguaiko,

Jealousy Cause of Brutal Murder? Lavrenty Repin On Saturday, 24 August Gotlied Gaseb from Henties Bay was stabbed and killed in what officials believe to be an act of jealousy. According to official reports, the 26-year-old Gaseb was dancing with an

unknown woman at a local Henties Bay club, Yanunyoko. At around quarter to one, the suspect and Henties Bay resident, Jarden Malsdo, walked in to the club with his brother. Witnesses state that after spotting Mr Gaseb on the dance floor, Malsdo walked up to him and stabbed him in the

upper-left shoulder. Mr Gaseb apparently staggered out of the club and collapsed outside. He was dead by the time rescue services arrived. Mr Jarden Malsdo, who is 21, appeared in court on Wednesday. He was denied bail.

Acting Chief Executive Officer of Henties Bay Municipality, handed over the N$2500 cash prize much to the delight of the winner and her parents. In conclusion, Visfees is certainly a family outing and the responsibility to be as family friendly as possible and yet maintain the rich traditions of the annual event rests heavily on the shoulders of the organisers. With the overwhelming

sponsorship and quite hefty entrance fee, more should be done to ensure the safety of young children in an environment where the lines between what’s socially acceptable and what’s entertaining are easily blurred; perhaps young adults can see the difference, but young kids can very easily be corrupted by what seems like an innocent competition, remark or song.

Youngest Traditional Youth Leader

Dorcas Mhungu Local resident, Justy Halwoodi Moses, is busy juggling three leadership positions at the same time. Being the Traditional Leader of the Mbandja Traditional Authority, Walvis Bay Branch Manager for Xtreme Products Namibia and SWAPO Youth League Treasurer for Walvis Bay, he’s doing an extraordinary job setting an example. Headman Moses wears the maternal leadership robe that he was entitled to inherit from the age of four when his uncle with the same name died in 1981. While waiting for Moses to grow old enough to take over the traditional leadership role, the elders appointed another uncle of his to take over. “I was the only one with my uncle’s name and he had chosen me to be heir upon his death, but I was too young when my uncle died to become the next leader. I was officially introduced to the Mbandja Traditional Authority office on 4 August 2012. The inauguration ceremony, where I was handed the traditional leadership walking stick and other regalia, was held on 18 December

the same year,” Moses said. What makes Moses an interesting leader is that he is an academic and maritime professional. While waiting to take over the reins of leadership he finished Grade 12 at Kollin Foundation Secondary School in Arandis and then enrolled for Navigation Studies with the Namibia Maritime and Fisheries Institute. Realising the importance of being an educated leader and making the most of the time available before taking over the headman role, Moses also enrolled for a Class 111 Navigation Degree with the Dar es Salaam Maritime Institute, which he completed in 2010. Two years later, he studied Fishing Technology in Iceland at the United Nations University. Moses said his management style is to lead by example. He hopes that the youth in Namibia will follow his path and become productive citizens. “The inauguration could have taken place earlier but I had to finish the studies. I am here working and I still perform the headman role. I also believe in gender equality and have one female and one male assistant to hold the fort when I am not at the village. They are all older than me because I am learning from the elders,” Moses said. Moses wants the youth to be encouraged to contribute to the economic growth of the country. He added that youth in the country indulge in alcohol abuse, drugs and other criminal activities because they have nothing to occupy them. He urged,” We must find ways of controlling the shebeens. What is worrying is that although the shebeens are supposed to sell light liquor only, they sell whiskies and other strong beverages. I put the blame on the companies selling the strong drinks and the law enforcing agents for not prosecuting those breaking the law.” He said youth from the poor households are the ones mostly indulging in excessive alcohol consumption and drugs because they spend most of their time loitering in the locations. As a young leader he finds it easy to relate with the youth and understands their plight better.

Namibia-Zambia Corridor Excellent Way of Trading Dorcas Mhungu

role as a gateway to the SADC countries is becoming increasingly important.

At a recent information seminar held by The Chief Executive Officer of the Walvis Bay Corridor Group (WBCG) in Zambia, it was revealed that Namibia’s WBCG, Johny Smith, told delegates

that Namibia’s role as a gateway to Zambia and the rest of the SADC region has become more prominent and has created more interest from the regional as well as the international markets. Monthly tonnage figures presented by Smith show a steady increase after the establishment of an office by the WBCG in Zambia in 2005. However, from May 2009 the tonnage grew in leaps and bounds and in 2012, tonnage of cargo that moved through the Trans Kalahari, Trans Caprivi and Trans Kunene corridors was more than 650 000 TUIs. Corresponding with the increase in cargo is the group’s footprints. The WBCG will open an office in the Netherlands. Last year, the group opened two offices in Sao Paulo Brazil and the Democratic Republic of Congo, bringing to five the number of offices. The other two are in South Africa and Zambia. Smith told stakeholders that the Walvis Bay – Ndola – Lubumbashi Development Corridor (WBNLDC) via the Port of Walvis Bay offers many advantages. Those include a short transit time from Walvis Bay to Lusaka, a high safety and security of moving cargo along this corridor, the fast turnaround time at the port of Walvis Bay and the efficiency of utilising the WBNLDC. This makes the Corridor a viable trade route especially for the Middle and Far East cargo. He said Zambian importers and exporters using the WBNLDC corridor benefit tremendously from the dry port facility at the port of Walvis Bay established to strengthen trade with Zambia through the port by using the facility as an entry and exit point. The event was addressed by representatives from the First Secretary of the High Commission of the Republic of Namibia to Zambia, Ms. Michelle Farmer, the Chief Executive Officer of the Zambia Association of Chambers of Commerce, Ms. Prisca Chikwashi and the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry, Mr Sunday Chikoti.

Last Chance to apply for TUCSIN Scholarship Lavrenty Repin For those in search of scholarships, next week will be the deadline to apply for DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) and TUCSIN’s program, which will select about 15 students to study in South Africa and Namibia.

This is a post-graduate program, so anyone with BA and Honours degree (or first year of Honours) can qualify for the scholarship, which focuses on Masters and PhD degrees. Naturally, you need to have excellent marks, but also you need to be prepared to study on a permanent basis. Further, you need to be below 36 years of age. The scholarship will cover your tuition, accommodation and research fees. On average around 80 people apply yearly, from which 15 are selected through a pre-selection process, preliminary interviews, expert recommendations and finally the decision of DAAD, “which makes the process completely transparent, and no one can pull any strings,” says Martina Williams, who has been working with TUCSIN for the past 15 years. TUCSIN, which was founded by Dr. Beatrice Sanderlovsky 35 years ago, is a

learning institute created to assist students with improving their grade 12 results. They have five stations around the country, including Windhoek and Rundu. Surprisingly, TUCSIN receives the most application from the South and the Erongo regions. “For those students that are either unsatisfied with their Matric results or were unable to achieve enough points to pass, TUCSIN is a great option,” says Martina. TUCSIN employs experienced teachers, many that come from government schools, which means that they are well accustomed to the curriculum and are aware of “problem areas”. According to Martina, “the TUCSIN school is set up almost like a pre-college, rather than a school, it gets you into a routine of different hours, classes and a greater responsibility.” Unlike similar institutions, TUCSIN devotes many hours to each subject and students can focus on individual classes to improve their overall score. At the moment around 600 students are enrolled into TUCSIN’s program. For more information please visit their website: www.tucsin.org

Spic & Span Reaching New Heights The Spic & Span team under the leadership of Helen Adams got a risky job this week cleaning the Street House Building opposite Nedbank in Walvis Bay. The task was to clean the windows and steel railings of this several storey’s high building. Spic & Span hired a Cherry Picker machine from Coastal Plant and Tool Hire. On this they put the basket the two employees were in to clean the building. This was a first for both Spic & Span and the Street House Building. The operation took them all day, but after the gruelling tussle, the war was won, and the building is all nice and sparkly.

HOME FINDER

Volleyball for Children in Need Purple Gecko Events in association with LM Properties and the Namib Independent are once again the proud hosts of the Annual Corporate Volleyball Fun Day that will be held on the 12th of October 2013 at Ground Zero. It is organised in an effort to promote team building and company relations. In addition to last year's Fun Day, we decided to get involved in the community by also hosting this event in favour of raising awareness to the Babyline & Kids Haven in Walvis Bay and funds to contribute to the welfare and basic needs of the babies and children in their care. In 2012, Purple Gecko Events in association with the Namib Independent played host to 21 teams that participated in over 30 games. More

than 200 volunteers and spectators were in attendance. With the support of our sponsors such as Coke, the Namib Independent and Engen Walvis Bay, last year’s event was a success and we are anxiously looking forward to even greater success at this year’s event with the support of our loyal sponsors that we have on board this year. So far the sponsors involved in this year’s event are, LM Properties, Coke, the Namib Independent, RadioWave, Ground Zero, Catamaran Charters and Red Eye liquor. We invite all companies that would still like to get involved to contact us for more detail. Entries to participate close on the 21st of September 2013. For this year's event we will

have 2 DJ’s named DUO PUNK (Theresa & Justin) from Windhoek as entertainment for the day and the prize giving ceremony afterwards. There will also be activities for the kids provided by Ground Zero. Friends and family are welcome as spectators, there will be a cash bar and food available during the day and braai packs for the prize giving ceremony. We at Purple Gecko Events invite all Companies and the participating teams of last year’s event to come and enjoy the day with us. Keep in mind that it’s all for a good cause. For information and entries please contact our event coordinators: Lorette 081 298 2372 Michelle 081 324 0513 Laurika 081 392 8168
