Miracle Baby Survives Three Storey Fall Tanya Calitz Last weekend, a 20-month-old baby incredibly survived a fall from the 3rd floor of the family’s apartment onto concrete paving below in Walvis Bay. According to the little girl’s mother, she was on the balcony talking to a friend, while the little girl was playing around her. “I looked away for only a second, when I heard a bang on the ground. At first I thought an object had fallen from the stoep, but immediately realised that my daughter had fallen through the railings of the apartment’s balcony,” the mother told the Namib Independent. Within seconds of the baby falling through the railings, the mother ran down the steps and attended to her daughter. “She was on ground in a crawling position, crying while trying to pull herself upwards,” the mother explains. In a moment of distress and devastation she called a friend to phone the ambulance for her.

“All I could see was a little bit of blood coming from her chin, but feared the worst,” she said. According to the mother, her baby was rushed to hospital where the staff attended to her baby. Scans, x-rays and sonars followed to determine the baby’s injuries. To add to this phenomenal story, the baby suffered no serious injuries or broken bones, but a few bumps and bruises. According to the mother, the attending doctor at the emergency clinic could not under any circumstances believe that the child had actually fallen onto concrete and even asked the mother to recheck the surface, such was his surprise at the baby’s lack of serious injury. “To the family’s delight and amusement she only had a cut on her chin, but the wound closed up by itself, without needing any stitches,” the mother said. “At first she was cautious when walking, saying ouch every time she stood on her feet, but now after a week, she is almost back to her old self, running around,” the baby’s mother told the Namib Independent.

Cold-Blooded Murder - Police Call for Help Continued from Page 1

In an interview with the Namib Independent, Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu said Prendiville was murdered resisting five men who stormed into the flat he stayed in with his friend. The shooting, which happened around 6pm last Friday, has shocked residents of the quiet coastal town of Walvis Bay. The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Councillor Uilika Nambahu, has condemned the murder of Prendiville, describing it as “senseless and mindless malice”. Addressing a council meeting on Tuesday in Kuisebmond, Mayor Nambahu said she found it

difficult to understand the reason behind the murder and why it was carried out in the first place. “What saddens me immensely is the fact that this was an unprovoked and cold-blooded attack. It is incidences like these that shock our community to the core, as our city wakes up to the terrible reality that there are criminal elements within our city that have no regard for human life.” She conveyed her condolences to Prendiville’s family and friends in Ireland and Namibia, adding that she is convinced that the culprits will be apprehended and face the full wrath of the law.

Detective Inspector Iikuyu said the deceased and his friend refused to comply with the gang’s’ orders to lie down and a scuffle ensued. The intruders, who had not anticipated the resistance, found themselves wrestling with Prendiville and his friend. When the suspects realised they were being overpowered they split and fled from the house. However, one of the gang members drew a gun and shot Prendiville in the left armpit before fleeing. Prendiville died instantly, Iikuyu said. The Irishman was employed by his friend’s son who has a business here in Walvis Bay. He was issued

with a work visa on the 13th of June this year. Prendiville’s friend, whose name Police were not at liberty to disclose, escaped unhurt. Inspector Iikuyu said the post-mortem will probably be done today if procedures go according to plan. The deceased’s family has been informed and arrangement for the

repatriation of the body will be done as soon as post-mortem results are out and members of the family arrive. Members of the public with information about the murder can contact Deputy Commissioner Ottilie Kashuupulwa on 064 219 036 or 081 250 6821 or Detective Inspector Erastus Iikuyu on 081 246 4757.

The Soldiers are Coming Siggi de Villiers The Namibian Defence Force is hosting a desert warfare exercise, codenamed Welwitschia, for ten SADC countries’ Special Forces in Swakopmund. Members will arrive from 4 to 7 September, commencing training and preparation for the main event from 30 September to 15 October. About 600 commissioned and uncommissioned military officers from the lowest to the ahighest military ranks of SADC member states will take part in this multinational forces warfare simulation exercise. The SADC Special Forces has its roots in a Regional Multi-Dimensional Peace Support Operations Capability launched in 1997. Last year’s training was held in Lesotho. The same exercise is embraced in various SADC countries. The annual event allows each participating SADC country to come up with a theme that is unique to that country’s environment. Due to Namibia being a desert country, its chosen theme focuses on preparation for desert warfare.” For this reason the venue is located in the Erongo Region. The Namib Desert proves suitable to train participants in Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) unique to desert environments and hot conditions. At the same time the programme aims to improve interoperability amongst participating SADC Special Forces members. The exercise also envisions preparing each SADC Special Forces country to be able to support their Government Objectives. Unique School for Farm Children to Be Opened On Coast Dorcas Mhungu Many farm workers’ children have no easy access to schools, which in most cases are long distances away. The opportunity to attend pre-school has always been a pipe dream for many. Amos Namibia is looking to improve that situation by running a pre-school training program. Under this program, 14 pre-schools on commercial farms in Namibia have been opened already. Judie Wiese

is the head of the organisation, which is an inter-denominational ministry whose core business is advancing education and training. They also offer spiritual assistance and services and promote unity and reconciliation in line with Christian morals and values. A Walvis Bay woman, Gertrude Bulls, will soon become the first woman in Erongo region to establish a pre-school in the small holding residential area of Kuiseb South under the Amos Namibia

training program. “Kids roam the streets and have nothing to do most of the time. I enrolled for this program driven by a passion for education, driven by the love to give skills and affection to the small ones. In a community where parents are not formally employed and spend most of their time looking at each other or drinking, what is there for the children?” Bulls explained her motivation. Because people in her

community live on seasonal income from the !Naras fruit that they harvest and sell from December to March every year, she said for the first six months she will enrol the children for free. About 23 children stand to benefit from Bulls’ project. The nearest pre-school is 15km away. “People in Kuiseb South spend most of their time sitting around and idling and I do not want the children to follow that route. I want to start with a culture and mind set change, so that the children will not drop out of school, and instil a positive mind set of a bright future. If you do not prepare the children properly they will not be motivated. Remember, you cannot teach an old dog new tricks,” Bulls said, emphasising the need to “catch them while still young”. Bulls worked for Social Security in Windhoek and Walvis Bay for ten years before quitting her accounting job “to grow my spiritual person”. Program Organiser Wiese said the Amos Namibia program will enable farm workers to improve their lives and that of the communities in which they live. “Due to the activities of Amos we identify the needs of pre-school children on farms. We have put together a Christian curriculum and training programme in such a way that it will be possible for a mother on a farm to run a small pre-school for the children on that farm. This we do through partnerships with

local churches, businesses and farmers, and under the protection of Amos Namibia,” said Wiese. She added that the 14 schools that are up and running so far are not all on farms but the organisation envisages to have 40 new schools on 40 farms in Namibia. Since the programme is for pre-schoolers, preferred ages are 5-6 but in some cases 3-year-olds have been enrolled. “This unique curriculum provides every farmer in Namibia with the opportunity to start a pre-school on his farm so that every pre-school child on every farm in Namibia can have the opportunity to meet his/her Saviour through Christ-centred education and to be school ready,” laid out Wiese. She added, “We are an inter-church organisation with a calling; not a moneymaking professional occupation. The aim is not to facilitate jobs for the jobless, but rather to equip people with valuable skills. Neither is our aim to interrupt or interfere with Government’s education systems.”

Colourful Gemstone within Kuiseb Community

Siggi De Villiers Kuisebmond hosts a most colourful housing facility in Kristiaansand Street: the Silent Guesthouse. The owner, Naftali Shaulura, finally saw his dreams come true when he opened the Silent Guesthouse doors in 2011.

He started his enterprise in 2010, after he noticed a lack of accommodation options for travellers. Many travellers also expressed a reluctance to find accommodation in the more expensive areas of town. Thus inspired, Naftali bought property, obtained business rights and opened the doors of his guesthouse in 2011. However, the journey was not without challenges.

Lots of planning was involved. First of all, construction materials and labour were expensive. Then, the strict hygiene standard of the municipality had to be met. Furnishing the rooms was also a challenge, for a few suppliers provided low quality furniture that broke far too easily. Nevertheless, these were all conquered and today the Silent Guesthouse boasts clean, colourful rooms containing comfortable beds with a promise of a good night’s sleep. Currently, the nine rooms have varying bed sizes. These range from queen size to single beds, with a price range of N$250 – 300 per person per night. Each room has its own bathroom with shower, a fridge and TV.

Guests can make use of a fully equipped kitchen as well as a laundry area. The most unique feature of the Silent Guesthouse is the option of a cook. If guests provide the ingredients, food can be made for them upon request. The future still holds a lot of promise for Naftali. He wishes to expand the small accommodation facility into a Bed and Breakfast unit around February 2014. Currently, he is busy with other guesthouse construction projects, so as not to disrupt the flow of business. This will also cater for the ever growing need of accommodation for travellers from abroad. For further enquiries please contact; Naftali Shaulura 081 274 0796 or Sylvia 081 471 8165

Mayor Speaks out on Current Affairs

Tanya Calitz Walvis Bay Mayor, Uilika Nambahu, shared her thoughts on currents affairs making headlines all over the country the past two weeks, at an ‘Ordinary Council Meeting’, held at the Council Chambers in Kuisebmond this week. Mayor Nambahu opened her address to fellow councillors, municipal management and staff, as well as the general public, expressing her utter disgust over the “senseless murder”, which shook the town of Walvis Bay the past week. “What saddens me immensely is the fact that this was an unprovoked and coldblooded attack. It is incidents such as these that shock our community to the core, as our town wakes up to the terrible reality that there are criminal elements within our community that have no regard for human life,” Nambahu stressed. Before expressing her sincere condolences, she ended her conviction on the futile murder with the words, “I would therefore like to denounce this senseless and mindless malice with the strongest condemnation.” Mayor Nambahu then elaborated on other events which had the coast talking. She praised Namport for their ‘Port of Excellence’ Award, saying that such an achievement has the prospective to draw a lot of attention from investors. “An award such as this one has great potential to generate additional interest through our port, with a great spill over cash flow into our community through business and services provided.” The next affair on her agenda, which she addressed briefly, was the successful

Ongewdiva Trade Fair, which took place recently. “Please allow me to extend words of congratulations to the Ongewdiva Town Council for having successfully executed yet another memorable Trade Fair,” she said. Another topic the Mayor extensively elaborated on was the latest happening within Etale Fishing Company. “I was delighted to hear that there is a new breath of life at Etale Fishing, and that some of the previously retrenched workers may have to resume work soon. I am aware of the importance of having a job, and realise that the loss of employment brings with it several social and financial challenges,” she said. “Understanding the importance of having a job, I would like to urge all workers, not only Etale workers, but all workers in Walvis Bay to take their work seriously and enhance productivity,” Nambahu added. Last, but definitely not least, Mayor Nambahu addressed the on-going crisis the people of Namibia are facing with the obstinate drought. “This is indeed the time when we rally together in an effort to mobilising resources for onward donation to those in dire need of help. The Office of the Mayor and its partners will soon embark on a resources mobilisation drive within our community, collecting funds and other essentials for the provision of drought relief to all those affected,” she concluded her speech. Additional information regarding what is to be expected and additional modalities will be communicated in due course.

Etale Workers to Get Serious About Jobs Staff Reporter “Etale Fishing workers who will be rehired must take their work seriously and enhance productivity because their livelihood and that of their families depend on their jobs,” cautioned Walvis Bay Mayor, Councillor Uilika Nambahu.

She said the warning also goes to all workers in Walvis Bay and urged the unions to remain vigilant and continue to work to protect the interest and rights of the members they represent. Mayor Nambahu said the unions have a mandate to act responsibly and to ensure a win-win sustainable relationship between the employer and the

employee. The Mayor’s remark comes in the wake of Etale’s recruitment drive that will see the company recruiting 80 employees following a massive retrenchment exercise earlier this year when the company’s viability was dogged by financial doldrums. The axe fell on seven hundred employees both permanent and

casual, including employees in managerial positions at the beginning of the year. The Human Resources Manager Gerry Munyama was quoted by the media this week as having said that Etale Fishing was granted a horse mackerel quota and that necessitated the resumption of operations.

Air Namibia is pleased to inform its clients and stakeholders that the much anticipated delivery of the first of the two brand new Airbus A330200 aircraft is scheduled for later this month. The second A330-200 is expected to enter the national air carrier’s fleet in November 2013. The two aircrafts are being leased from US-based lessor, Intrepid Aviation. The lease agreement will be for a 12year period. The A330’s will be used primarily on Air Namibia’s long haul route between Windhoek and Frankfurt. The Airbus A330-200 aircraft is an economically efficient aircraft, which is popular with airlines around the world. It has been deemed as ideal for Air Namibia, as the airline continues to explore ways of reducing its operation costs. It has been estimated that with the introduction of the two A330-200 aircrafts, Air Namibia will realise a saving of up to a whopping N$510 million over 60 months on operating costs alone (N$8.5 million per month). “The fleet upgrade ties in with our network expansion and frequency increase plans, using aircrafts which have a combination of low operating costs, high efficiency, flexibility, customer appeal and optimised performance,” says Air Namibia’s Head of Corporate Communications, Paulus Homateni Nakawa. The A330s’ will come in a seat configuration of 244 seats, of which 30 are in business class and 214 in the economy class. Business class seats will be full flat beds (180 degrees flat), while all seats in the aircraft including economy class will have “video/audio on demand” with individual monitors for each passenger. customer needs more optimally. Air Namibia currently uses two Airbus A340300 aircraft on the Windhoek-Frankfurt route, whose lease agreement expires in October, 2013. The new A330-200 aircrafts have been built and configured in line with Air Namibia’s requirements and standards. “From the range of aircraft types available, the A330-200 was found to be the most suited for our operations and conditions, given lower operating cost, high dispatch reliability, flexibility and appeal to customers,” says Air Namibia General Manager for Commercial Services, Xavier Masule. The Airbus A330-200 offers about 20% lower cost compared to the A340-300. This is mostly due to its lower Maximum Take Off Weight (230,000kg instead of 257,000kg), which means lower landing fees, lower navigation charges and lower fuel consumption. Adding to the decreased fuel consumption is that the Airbus A330-200 has only two, not four engines. This, in turn, results in lower maintenance costs. Furthermore is it easy to migrate from the A340-300, and a conformity with the regional A319-100 means lower crew training costs. Also the cabin size fits better for Air Namibia’s current average 220 passengers per flight. Other added features of the A330200 in business class include inflight entertainment screens in the back of the seat in front, video on demand with games (also in economy class), rising armrests that form individual privacy screens, water bottle and general stowage, shoe stowage and literature pocket, PC power, headphone port, and USB data port.

According to media reports, preference will be given to former employees who were retrenched when the company found itself in financial stormy waters that sank the fishing company. It is also common knowledge that Etale is currently undertaking major refurbishments in order to ready itself for business as usual.

Usually it's drunk people disturbing the wildlife, but one man in Sweden found himself in trouble with five drunk elk. The man was blocked from entering his house in Ingaro, an

island in Stockholm's suburbs, by four adult elk and a calf who had gotten drunk from eating rotten apples in his garden. "Five drunken elk were threatening a resident who was barred from entering his own home," the police incident report said. The animals had left before the police arrived, and the homeowner was instructed by officers to clear his garden of fermented apples in order to avoid any future incidents with drunken elk. Police spokesman Albin Näverberg agreed the man had no option but

to call the authorities as the animals posed a big threat. "They can be really dangerous. They become fearless," he said "Instead of backing away when a person approaches, they move toward you. They may even take a run at you." This is a reoccurring problem for Swedish police, who see dozens of calls about drunken elk in the autumn. Näverberg said: "If there is a lot of fermenting fruit, then we get a lot of calls about drunken elk. But most often they're gone before officers arrive." Source: The Mirror

Swimmers in Sweden Warned Against SkinnyDipping After Eight-Inch Testicle-Eating Fish Nicknamed the 'Ball Cutter' Is Found

Skinny-dippers in Sweden are quickly putting their trunks back on after a South American fish with a fondness for eating testicles was found in the sea. A Pacu, nicknamed the 'ball cutter', has been found in the sea between Denmark and Sweden - the first time one has been spotted in European waters. A fisherman landed the eight-inch relative of the piranha in the Oresund Sound, prompting male swimmers to stay on the beach with legs firmly crossed.

A spokesman for the National History Museum in Denmark warned: "Keep your swimwear on if you’re bathing in the Sound these days – maybe there are more out there!" The Pacu can grow up to 35inch (88cm) and can weigh up to 55lb (about 24kg) and is usually found in the Amazon basin and Papua New Guinea. It is almost identical to a piranha but has flatter, stronger teeth which are perfect for crushing. Fishermen have reportedly bled to death after losing their testicles to the fish’s jaws. Danish fish expert Henrik Carl said: "The Pacu is not normally dangerous to people but it has quite a serious bite. There have been incidents in other countries, such as Papua New Guinea, where some men have had their

testicles bitten off. "They bite because they’re hungry, and testicles sit nicely in their mouth. "And its mouth is not so big, so of course it normally eats nuts, fruit, and small fish, but human testicles are just a natural target. "It’s not normal to get your testicles bitten off, of course, but it can happen, especially now in Sweden." Mr. Carl said that the discovery of one Pacu – which is currently undergoing DNA tests to confirm its identity – should not keep Swedish men out of the water. But if more were found in the area, it could become a serious issue, he suggested. “This one was the first, but who knows, it’s probably not the last,” he added. source: The Mirror

and 25-year-old Verena Salzmann, who is a German citizen. According to earlier media reports, the suspects were in the process of defrauding an unnamed company in Windhoek of N$500 000 when they were arrested. The Swakopmund Neighbourhood Watch also confirmed their involvement in the arrest, but couldn’t elaborate as the investigation is still under way. Mr Nederlof, head of the Neighbourhood Watch, told the Namib Independent that they were approached by a Private Investigator who asked for assistance with the case. Another Neighbourhood Watch representative confirmed that this was their largest bust so far. Allegedly the suspects also acted out their scheme on petrol stations, using cloned fuel cards to fill up trucks in exchange for cash. Regional Police Commissioner Samuel !Hoebeb confirmed the allegations, but said that “our investigation indicates that more (people) than we have arrested were involved, so we can not divulge any information at this point”. The three male suspects will remain in custody until their bail application hearing next Tuesday, after prosecutor Hermine Apollus objected to bail being granted. Verena Salzmann was released on Monday on N$10 000 bail under condition that she submit her travel documents to the police and report to a police station twice a week. She also appeared in court on Wednesday alongside her defence attorney Christopher Mayumbelo, where the magistrate warned her not to apply for new travel documents at her embassy. The court date was set for 7 November 2013 when prosecutors will present their case. It is unclear at this moment how many other individuals were involved in the fraud operation and whether any warrants of arrest were issued.

Reckless Quarry a Threat to the Environment Lavrenty Repin Last month the Namib Independent revealed the illegal activities of a quarry situated outside Walvis Bay in the Namib Naukluft Park. As the Ministry of Tourism and Environment continues to investigate the matter, the quarry continues to operate without a valid Environmental Clearance Certificate, according to a report conducted by two ministry employees. One of them told the Namib Independent that at this moment the quarry has absolutely no environmental documents. According to records at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, eight companies have applied to open quarries around the Walvis Bay and Swakopmund area, predominantly for dimension stone mining. In order to open these quarries, however, an extensive environmental assessment and scoping has to be made and approved before any mining can take place, says an environmental consultant who wishes to remain anonymous. “The main environmental concern is usually the air quality (dust) and noise impact and then, of course, one big hole in the ground that they will have to rehabilitate,” the consultant informed the Namib Independent. One of the directors of Namib Constructions, K H Shultz, confirmed that they have applied for the Environmental Clearance Certificate, but it hasn’t yet been granted. When asked who the quarry belonged to, Mr K H Shultz said that originally it belongs to the government. In this case Namib Constructions Pty Ltd is leasing the quarry; this information is also confirmed by the extensive investigative report. Furthermore the report says that “the lessee (in this case Namib Constructions Pty Ltd) must return the property in the same condition as he received it. Which is not possible if the land is used for quarry mining.”

Vision: To Be The Best At What We Do!

FRAUD ALERT Dr Sindila Mwiya, a renowned environmentalist with many years of experience, told the Namib Independent that many of the mines established before 1995 (as is the case here) did their own environmental assessment, which is now invalid, yet they continue to operate. He said that “quarrying, especially dimension stone mining (where large blocks of marble or granite are removed), leaves a much bigger footprint on the environment than, say, rare-minerals mining which involves a small operation.” That is the reason why dimension stone mining is illegal within national parks. It is unclear whether the quarry outside Walvis Bay is involved in dimension stone mining, however pictures taken by Namib Independent show large granite blocks outside the quarry. The report also mentions that a factory on the premises of the quarry produces cement products which they allegedly sell to the Swakopmund Municipality and other clients. “All these activities are illegal as they are run hidden and without any authority,” the report states. By the time Namib Independent visited the quarry, they had removed any visible evidence of cement production.

Uncleared Funds Affecting Local Bank Customers Dorcas Mhungu Recently, complaints have been received from disgruntled FNB customers concerning the delay in clearing their debit card transactions. However, it seems to

be affecting all the banks.

One client banking with FNB availed email correspondence from FNB Walvis Bay, assuring that the problem will be solved soon. At the time of going to press - three weeks after the

query was brought to the Namib Independent - nothing had been done to ease the situation. A promised early response had not been received either. Dixon Norval, FNB Head of Strategic Marketing and

Payments Association of Namibia (PAN) Chief Operating Officer, Annette Rathenam, said the clearance delays are indeed affecting all the banks in Namibia, but the organisation is working flat out to rectify the problem. She further said notices about the delays were placed in the national papers in March. Walvis Mayor Applauds Namport’s Excellence Tanya Calitz At a Council Meeting held in Kuisebmond earlier this week, Walvis Bay Mayor Uilika Nambahu applauded the Namibian Ports Authority’s (Namport) achievement. The ‘Port of Excellence’ Award was granted to them just over a week ago. “This sterling achievement is not just a great source of pride for the staff and management of Namport but a great source of pride to all Namibians, especially the residents of the Port City of Walvis Bay,” Mayor Nambahu praised them. The award was presented at the African Ports Evolution 2013 Forum held at the Cape Town Convention Centre during 26-27 August 2013 by Hon Alan Winde, Provincial Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Tourism from the Western Cape Government in South Africa.

Namport emerged winner of the Port Excellence Award for the Port of Walvis Bay. The Port Excellence Award recognises the most efficient port based on productivity, connectivity and ease of transport during the period of 1st August 2012 to 31st July, 2013. Other nominees in this category were Transnet National Ports Authority for the Port of Durban, MPDC for the Port of Maputo and Kenya Ports Authority for the Port of Mombasa. Mayor Nambahu also congratulated the management, its Board of Directors and all the staff of Namport for their excellent strategic oversight on the activities of the port. Last but not least she also applauded the Government through the line of Ministries for making this great achievement possible. “It is these selfless endeavors that help and compliment all our marketing and promotional

efforts towards the attraction of investment into our city and our objective of making the Port of Walvis Bay the preferred one,” she added. According to Namport, Africa is poised to be one of the most strategic partners for trade and infrastructure investment in the 21st century. Port and maritime authorities are at the forefront of this development and

Three Years without an Explanation Lavrenty Repin Three years ago Elieser Bees, a Swakopmund resident who is employed as a mechanic at a local mine, was woken up at midnight by a text confirming the withdrawal of N$3 500 from his FNB account. By the time Mr Bees blocked his

card, a total of N$8 500 was stolen from his account. Thereafter followed a tedious process of filling in forms and declarations and monotonously enquiring at the Swakopmund FNB bank - ever since the incident happened on 26th of May 2010. Up to now Mr Bees hasn’t received any cash, nor an

explanation. “Every time we go to the bank, we’re told to wait,” says Elieser’s wife, Mrs Katriena Bees, who is a waitress in a Swakopmund restaurant. “I’ve given up going there (FNB),” she concludes. The bank statement shows that transfers from Mr Bees account

were made at ATMs in Walvis Bay, Windhoek and Swakopmund within a period of 12 hours, while the card was in possession of Mr Bees’s wife; indicating that they were victims of card cloning. When the Namib Independent spoke to the FNB Corporate Group Manager, Ms Muranda, she confirmed via email that it is indeed

the case. She further stated that the investigation is still ongoing. No explanation was made in regards to the exceptionally long duration of the investigation or why the Bees family were never contacted by FNB. However, she reminded FNB customers to always be vigilant when using their BOB cards.

Award Winning Environmentalist Delivers Oil Spill Workshop Dorcas Mhungu

Last week, 27 participants attended a one-day basic oil spill training workshop at the Walvis Bay Yacht Club, organised by Xtreme Projects Namibia. The training workshop was conducted by South African award winning environmentalist Kevin Kelly. Participants were drawn from the fishing sector, shipping, oil supply organisations and maritime

related companies. Branch Manager Xtreme Projects Namibia, Justy Moses, said that what necessitated the training is a governmental requisite for fishing companies to have an oil spill contingency plan and the requirement is channelled through Namport. “For a company to run its oil contingency plan efficiently, it must have people who are conversant with oil spill prevention and response mechanisms,”

explained Moses. Xtreme Projects Namibia is a subsidiary of Xtreme Projects Group South Africa, and is a multi-skilled Environmental Management Specialist Organisation, providing a number of products and services in spill prevention and response. The timing of the workshop could not be better as Walvis Bay has been in the news over the last few months for oil spills, although in these instances the spills were

purposefully and illegally carried out in order to discard of oil waste. Xtreme Projects’ services include spill kits and products, fire restoration, bio remediation, industrial cleaning, salvage, pollution containment, waste removal, super sucker trucks, waste skip trucks and crane trucks. The company has branches in Ghana, Mauritius and Italy.

Swakopmund Swimming Pool - An Un-kept Promise

Opinion Piece by Lavrenty Repin I remember standing on a ledge, overlooking a body of water that I knew would be my undoing, every muscle shivering and aching, the sun had already set - only the thought of hitting the hot shower at the end of the ordeal drove me to leap off the diving board, while my coach relentless and unmoved counted down. I also remember what a remarkably diverse group of kids we were, of all ages, races, cultural and financial backgrounds; but in that water it didn’t matter one bit. We fought the elements tooth and nail and focused our attention on the challenges of overcoming that last extra lap. As a result of fighting a common figurative

enemy we grew closer together and understood each other more profoundly. And then amidst a string of safety complains, municipal debt and an unfortunate accident the pool closed down and the space sold. But not without a promise to rebuilt it, in a prime location bigger and better in every way. Jump ahead to 2013 and finally there is a pool. Although half the size of its predecessor, it is heated, and has a stylish café where parents can look on as their children are run through the books. The comfort and convenience is astounding, almost addictive, even as you overlook the absence of a changing-room. Entering the swimming pool feels like you’ve just steeped inside a giant gem-stone. But something is missing. The price you pay for this luxury is N$30

per visit, for any serious swimmer it will cost N$120 a week, almost N$500 a month – it is plain to see that only people within a very specific class are privileged enough to afford such prices. Especially when we realise that the bulk of visitors to the swimming pool are still in school. The old municipal pool had some magnificent swimmers, most of whom came from disadvantaged homes and communities. They would cycle many kilometres on rusty bicycles that would often miss a pedal or even a seat, and attended swimming-classes by instructors that hardly received any compensation for their work. Yet, they would time and time again help these young adults with their entrance fee which at that time was roughly N$5. They provided them with free swimming goggles and caps and held countless tournaments with modest but nevertheless desirable prizes. This is not the case anymore. For all its beauty and glamour I can assure you that once you are physically in the water, it feels exactly the same as the old pool or any pool for that matter - only a little warmer and a lot emptier. Now and again I wonder what happened to those guys, who dominated every tournament and perhaps could’ve had a bright swimming career ahead of them, after the pool closed down. Certainly for a while they remained optimistic and diligently waited for the new promised pool. As the years rolled by they probably forgot their instructor, gradually lost their impressive skill and flair and their monstrous body physic dwindled. I can only imagine, when finally the Live It Pool opened, how

thrilled a few of them must have felt right up until the moment they walked through the front door, swimming shorts in hand, and heard, “the price is N$30”. Also, please note that the huge complex that is currently under construction next to the Live It gym, will not have a public pool, as is rumoured, but instead it will be purely for rehabilitation purposes.

Taxi vs. Train Dear Editor,

pointed out by one of your readers in a letter, in which they said the first step should be to put up a fence along the danger zone. Yesterday I took this picture of a taxi driving around right next to the rail road. What the hell he was doing there I will never know, but come on TransNamib, you cannot have taxis driving around so close to the railway. Pull your thumbs out your bums and get a fence up now. How difficult can this be?

I have read with much interest as you catalogued the train catastrophes of late. Most alarming about the situation is the reaction from TransNamib, who say that they cannot really do anything because they have lights up and that cars should act in accordance with the lights. Also they said people who cross the lines should look where they are going. This is a really lame explanation and that was S. Gideon

Fast Food Frustration

Dear Namib Independent,

I would like to share my frustration with fast food outlets and restaurant experience in Walvis Bay on a weekend, especially on Sundays.

rude, they have excuses of no stock available or the kitchen being closed already. Setting out on a 30 minute endeavour ends up being a two to three hour ordeal with little to show for it. Ordering food via the phone is just as pointless, for it pitches at your doorstep just as you are about to go to bed. The lack of quality service to the public is really shocking. It forces Walvis Bay inhabitants to end up either driving to Swakop or buying groceries and cooking at home for their dinner on a weekend.

Due to a hectic and stressful week, people do not always like to stand and cook for hours in the kitchen on a weekend. However, in Walvis Bay there hardly exists another option. Come Sunday evening, one ends up driving from place to place, trying to locate some acceptable form of take-away for the family. If restaurants and fast food outlets are not either Regards fully booked, closed or Sarah Marais

The real hopeless victims of mental illness are to be found among those who appear to be normal… They are normal not in what may be called the absolute sense of the word; they are normal only in relationship to a profoundly abnormal society. Their perfect adjustment to the abnormal society is a measure of their mental sickness. These millions of abnormally normal people, living without fuss in a society to which, if they are fully human beings, they ought not to be adjusted. Aldous Huxley

We asked a few local residents what their biggest dream was and why? Clarence

”Starting my own business in the building industry I would like to be a building contractor due to the expansion that is currently happening in Walvis Bay.”

Kreshy “I would say my biggest dream would be starting my own fashion industry and becoming the next top model. I have always had a passion for modeling and the glitz and glamour.”

Nolene:

“I don’t have a specific dream but I would definitely reach out and help abused children and start my own Rehabilitation Centre and help these children with what they need and teach them what it means to be loved.”

Lizel “My een grootste droom is om te help met “world peace” en hulp te gee waar dit wel nodig is.”

Johanna “My biggest dream would definitely be to start my own cooking channel and be the next Jamie Oliver. I absolutely love trying out new dishes.”

Patrick “To write my first hit manuscript and to have famous actors play in my movie that I would be creating. Actors such as: Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington.”

Ismelda “My only biggest dream is to help the orphanage children and also the old age homes. I would love to give the orphanage children everything that they can’t have and most of all motherly love that they all seek. I would love to improve the old age homes by offering more activity facilities for them.”

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee V-6/V-8 A fresh face, eight speeds, and more for Jeep's flagship. It has been three years since Jeep dramatically updated its Grand Cherokee, delivering a refined flagship with style and substance constructed on a chassis shared in large part with the MercedesBenz M-class. Jeep would be the first to admit that, in the past, it would slide out a new model and then ignore it for five years. No longer. The iconic brand has reloaded the Grand Cherokee for 2014 with a new engine, transmission, and other features. One section of Jeepers naturally will focus on the new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine, those less interested in the brand’s core values and more into automotive oddballs will gravitate toward the SRT model. But those are far from volume plays - the dual beating hearts of the lineup are the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 and 5.7-liter V-8 Hemi models. All Eight Up with Gears The most significant drivetrain news is the adoption of a ZFengineered eight-speed automatic for all Grand Cherokees. Paddle shifters have sprouted behind every steering wheel. Also new is an Eco button that alters the gearbox shift schedule and throttle sensitivity for optimal fuel economy. On V-8 models, Eco also effects cylinder deactivation. If you have the optional air suspension, it will automatically lower the vehicle to "Aero" ride height when traveling at higher speeds. Four trim levels are available - Laredo, Limited, Overland, and the rechristened Summit. On the Move Being a Jeep, the Grand Cherokee has a spec sheet that offers a mind-numbing array of chassis and suspension possibilities, including a five-mode air suspension, a multisurface chassis-control system called Selec-Terrain, rearwheel drive, and three all-wheeldrive options.

As a treat for boulder bashers, the GC now offers a slick feature on the Limited and Overland called Selec-Speed Control. Typical hill-descentcontrol systems automatically work the throttle and brakes to allow you to creep downhill, but this system also lets you do the same uphill. The steering is accurate and nicely weighted, and the suspension takes a predictable set when you enter a curve, yet the ride won't splash your latte.

It would be difficult not to check off the boxes for the harder-core Quadra-Drive II all-wheel-drive option - it’s available on Limited and Overland models and standard on the Summit - and SelecTerrain. The latter becomes standard on the Limited and up and offers all-weather options for sand, rock, snow, and mud, as well as an Automatic mode. And there's still a Sport mode, but it’s now actuated with the shift lever.

Refresh - Getcher Refresh Right passenger-side headlamp and comfortable commuting, and Here the words "Since 1941" in the outings to the ballet. The GC

All Grand Cherokees received exterior changes for 2014. The average driver might have trouble telling the 2013 from the 2014 in profile, but the front end is markedly different. The headlamps are now shallow and squinty, as if the car had just driven out of a dark tunnel on a bright sunny day. Cool details include the tiny profile of a World War II–era Jeep depicted in the

driver's-side unit. Rimming the headlights are LED running lamps, naturally. The grille is slightly shallower, the lower fascia commensurately taller. As for the rear, each trim gets its own styling down low. Given its plethora of available models and options, the currentgeneration Grand Cherokee may very well be the most versatile vehicle extant, being equally suited for towing, off-roading,

is the automotive equivalent of a Leatherman multitool, and although Leatherman and Jeep might create new, better, and more-useful versions, they maintain their quintessential goodness. We’re looking forward to seeing what Jeep does next with the Grand Cherokee. We’re positive it won’t take five years to find out.

They have a lot of data, but they’re still clueless. A better model is just around the corner. They look nice and shiny until you get them home. It’s always essential to have a backup. They’ll do whatever you want if you push the right buttons. The best part of having one is the games you can play. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on. The lights are on but nobody’s home. Big power surges knock them out at night. Size does matter.

When you ask them what’s wrong, they always say ‘nothing’. They can produce incorrect results with alarming speed. They are always turning simple statements into big productions. Small talk is important. You do the same thing for years, and suddenly it’s wrong. They make you take the garbage out. Miss a period and they go wild.

In the

World of Sport The Barclays Premier league Saturday 31 August Manchester City vs. Hull City 2-0 Negredo 65th minute, Toure 90th minute. New signing Alvaro Negredo with a clinical header. It is scary to think that you can replace a striker with the quality of Eden Dzeko with a striker with the quality of Negredo. Negredo should have netted twice because he had an open goal but headed wayward. City looked almost confused at times when in possession and I am sure that captain Tore had more of an influence in the closing stages than Manager Pellegrini. Not only did he score a humdinger of a free kick in the 90th minute but the old hand must have had a few harsh words that saw City slowly press the life out of an unlucky Hull team. They did not only attack their superior rivals but were unlucky not to score themselves. A win is a win, although it was not comfortable in any shape or form. Other results for the 31st: Cardiff vs. Everton 0-0 Newcastle vs. Fullham 1-0 Norwich vs. Southampton 1-0 West Ham vs. Stoke 0-1 Crystall Palace vs. Sunderland 3-1 Sunday 1 September: Liverpool vs. Man United 1-0 Birthday boy (24) Daniel Sturridge netted a close range header in the third minute. It was his third successive win of the season. I always saw the goal-scoring talent of this boy that the bosses at Chelsea seemed to miss. His genuine pace and nimble dribbling skills make him a nightmare for defenders. I predict that he will become a legend for both Liverpool as well as for England. If this guy and Luis Suarez get it together I see only red for the whole of the premier league. Yes, Suarez is staying but still waiting to return from his suspension for biting Chelsea defender Ivanovic. Ashley Young and Robin van Persie had good chances but Liverpool doggedly defended against a Rooney-less United. He was injured when training for England. He received a nasty gash in the forehead that rules him out for 2-3 weeks after a head-on collision between him and Phil Jones. I repeat what I said last week - welcome back, Liverpool! You are back where you belong - running with the big dogs again. The terrible record of David Moyes at Anfield continues, but still a deserved victory for Liverpool. Like always there were a bunch of yellow cards (4 to Manchester and 2 Liverpool) but we would not want it any other way, would we? Other results: West Brom vs. Swansea 0-2 Arsenal vs. Tottenham 1-0. Fantastic goal from Giroud. Arsene Wenger must be laughing silently because not only is he proving his critics wrong but he also acquired the midfield maestro Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid no less. It was a club record, signing 42.3 million Pound; that shows how serious he was in signing the German. The midfielder will surely help boost The Gunners’s chances in the league and in Europe. Round-up: Liverpool lead the table with their best start since ‘94-‘95 on nine points, closely followed by the usual suspects with West Brom at the bottom with one point. Transfers of note: They do not come bigger than this: Real Madrid signed 24-year-old left midfielder genius Gareth Bale from Tottenham for a world record fee of 85.3 million Pounds. The Welsh boy-wonder signed a 6-year 300 000 pound / week deal that makes him the most expensive signing ever. You know that you are not doing too shabby when you earn N$473/minute - even when you are asleep!! It must be horrifying for other teams to think that they will from now on face the left boot of Bale and the right boot of Ronaldo in the same team, not to mention their pace and power. Indeed something to behold. Everton’s Marouane Fellani to Manchester United for 27.5 million pounds Everton: Romelo Lukaku, James McCarthy and Gareth Barry West Bromich: Sessignion and Anichebe Liverpool: Sakho and Ilori for 25 mill. Pounds. Striker

Moses signs on loan Villa: Striker Kocak Stoke: Stephen Ireland on loan Cardiff: Nigerian striker Peter Odemwinge (a much underrated striker) Top scorers: Benteke (Villa), Giroud (Arsenal) and Sturridge (Liverpool). All of them on 3 goals. Result of the week: Liverpool beating Manchester United Not to be missed: Saturday 14th August @ 17H30: Everton vs. Chelsea @ Goodison Park Europe: European champions Bayern Munich beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final in Prague. The champions of Europe equalised in the 121st minute through Javi Martinez. They took the game to penalties with the score at 2-2. They eventually won 5-4 against a 10-man Chelsea squad. Mourinho insists that they were unlucky but 37 to 14 attempts on goal suggest otherwise. Two magnificent sides that can beat any team in the world on any day played a memorable game. The Currie Cup: 30th August Lions vs. Western Province 31-31 It was a lively game from the kick-off with Province starting like a house on fire. After 20 odd minutes the score was already 15 to nothing for W.P. thanks to enterprising rugby. They looked like running away with the game but a come-back was on the cards and the Lions duly obliged. The Lions were trailing 10-25 when the controversy started. They were awarded a penalty try by TMO Willie Roos in the 48th minute, when Damian De Allende was adjudged to dive on the ball as Marnitz Boshoff was reaching for the tryline. At first it looked like a bizarre decision, but later it was discussed in detail with top referee Mark Lawrance. It was found that De Allende broke three laws and therefore the decision was justified. The game changed after that and the Lions scored 14 points during De Allende’s absence. This spectacular game ended with the score at 31 all with a last minute penalty from Province flyhalf Kurt Coleman. The Lions got 3 points and Province 2 points from the game. 31st August The Cheetahs beat Griquas 40-20. It was always going to be a tough ask for Griquas in Bloemfontein. The Cheetahs scored 4 tries to 2 to earn a bonus point. Sharks vs. Bulls 34-18 The Sharks soared to the top of the log in a bruising game where they ran in 4 tries to 2, with 2 tries from Bulls winger Ndugani. The Bulls go to the bottom of the log but they will be back in the closing stages of the Cup - guaranteed. Western Province remains the only unbeaten team in the competition and is third on the log. Result of the week: not one game can be singled out. Not to be missed: 7th August. Griquas vs. Lions in Kimberley at 15h00, Blue Bulls vs Free State in Pretoria at 17h05, and Western Province vs. Sharks at Newlands at 19h05. The Rugby Championship All the teams had a week off and it was back to the drawing boards. That is for everyone but the All Blacks - where there seems to be no weaknesses. Their brand of rugby impresses with each game and I see no way that Argentina can even remotely trouble them. Maybe if they play their off-the-ball-game and distract the Blacks, then the Kiwis will still win by more than 20 points. Good luck to the Argentininians because they will need it. The Springboks will play the Wallabies at the Suncorpe stadium in Brisbane at 12h05. This game is bound to be a game of chess. Both teams are struggling to find a descent game plan but I favour the Springboks for a win if Etsebeth plays. He has a stomach bug and it is uncertain if he will play. If he was the only able forward in a pack of onelegged butt kickers I would still give them a fair chance of winning. He is still a “kid” but already a worldwide renowned name that is already touching legendary status. Bismarck du Plessis will start with Straus moving to the bench. (The game of chess has already started) Zane Kirchner will in all likeliness start at fullback with Willie le Roux moving to the wing. New Zealand and Argentina will start at 09h35 and they play at the Waikato stadium in Wellington. Not to be missed: Australia vs. South Africa
