Tanks Built at the Coast Tanya Calitz Starling Management Solutions (SMS), based in Walvis Bay, will be the first company to set up an aquaponic farm in Namibia, after their team in Walvis Bay designed and manufactured the tanks, which will be set up on a farm in Otjiwarongo.

This style of organic farming has become extremely popular all over the world, with several aquaponic systems being installed in South Africa as well. According to Starling Management Solutions’ Company Director, Mr Manfred /Uxamb, this first for Namibia project was inspired by the drought crisis the country is facing.

“I see this project as a way of responding and providing a solution to President Hifikepunye Pohamba declaring the drought in Namibia as a State Of Emergency,” he said. Manfred explained that everything about this type of farming is beneficial. It offers a sustainable solution to the problem the country is facing with drought, shortage of food and joblessness. Namibia's First Aquaponic Tanks Built at the Coast Continued from Page 1

“By starting this type of farming the country does not have to import so much fresh produce,” Manfred enthusiastically told the Namib Independent in an interview this week. Project Facilitator and Manfred’s son, Mr Nelson /Uxamb, stated that the first phase of the project - to get the farm up and running - has been predicted to cost approximately N$10 million. “In the next twelve weeks to come the first plants will be growing,” he predicted. The development of the tanks for the project has already provided several locals in Walvis Bay with jobs, and is estimated to provide another 50 jobs in the set-up phase, and 75–100 permanent jobs in running the project, according to Nelson. The core people trained in Walvis Bay will also be part of the set up and development phase in Otjiwarongo, said Manfred. According to Nelson this aquaponic farm will produce both fish and organic vegetables, in a dynamic, natural, pond-type ecosystem on a commercial scale. “The great thing about this type of farming is that anyone can set up such a system to feed their own household, or even an entire village. It is the farming of the future! Even if you haven’t farmed or gardened extensively, most can grasp this simple way to grow food.

Unlike hydroponics and managing chemical inputs and fertiliser, the natural ecosystem of an aquaponic system makes aquaponics easier to manage,” Nelson explained. Another huge advantage, and the main motivation for SMS starting the aquaponic farm, is that it uses only a fraction of the water used in conventional farming and can use even less if rain water is collected to add to the system. “Other means of farming are so dependent on natural factors, which often hamper these projects, but not with aquaponics. With this style we are not dependent on huge amounts of water as are conventional in-ground farmers and it does not have the same environmental impact of tremendous water consumption and waste. “The minimal use of water means aquaponics is the answer for drought stricken environments. It’s like the oasis in the desert,” Nelson explained. Manfred also said that aquaponics is studied, practiced and proven to be a more effective way of farming vegetables. “I am excited about this project for various reasons, but also because this is a tested method that works. Aquaponics can also grow more produce compared to produce grown conventionally in the ground. Vegetables usually grow

significantly faster, and at three to four times the density, without ever depleting the nutrients,” he said. “Not only will we be producing organic fruits, vegetables and herbs, but also fish. This way of growing food means the aquaponics farmer does not require farmland with fertile soil, or even land with soil at all for that matter.” “We decided to start this project because the benefits are endless,” said Nelson, and named a few. “Very little water is needed because it is recirculated in tanks, the water is used to grow plants and grow fish at the same time, growing can be all year round, not just in seasons, quality of production is consistent, the products are healthy and chemical free, there are minimal issues with insect pests, animals are unable to destroy or eat the production, growing is not constrained to only daylight hours, all growing is in a controlled temperature environment, diseases are minimal if any, it helps regions to be self-sufficient in food security, losses and wastage are minimal, higher returns are achieved in the marketplace with aquaponic products, and it will help Namibians be self-sufficient in food production.” Another huge benefit of aquaponic growing is that it grows 100% chemical free, all natural produce. If any chemical or synthetic pesticides,

herbicides, or fertilisers are used, the fish could die, effectively killing the system generator! There is no question that aquaponically grown food is chemical free as it cannot be cheated. Even most approved organic pesticides could kill the fish. Lastly, this project will set the benchmark for the rest of the country, and other

African countries to become more self-sustainable. “This is a perfect example of a private-public partnership, which will put Otjiwarongo on the map, and attract people from all over to get trained in this field,” said Nelson. For more information contact starlingmanagementna@gmail.com.

The accused appeared in front of Magistrate Andre Matulich. Both the accused, Ikera and Haraseb, admitted to the break-in after being arrested by police. It is alleged that goods went missing from the store prior to the break-in, and that one of the employees then allegedly suggested they fake a break-in to account for the missing goods. Claims suggested that the alarm of the shop was not activated on the night of the burglary. According to the court records

the stolen goods are valued at N$24 000, while none of that has been recovered yet. Both Seibes and Schwartz will receive legal representation. The case has been postponed till 18 November, for further investigations. Speaking to Regional Manager Ms Sarah Kruger, she expressed her shock at the allegations, but wished to refrain from making any statements while investigations are still on-going.

Transport Company Refutes Claims of Involvement in Container Theft Tanya Calitz

P. Weakley Transport announced this week that they had no criminal involvement in the container theft, which was uncovered by Nampol in Walvis Bay last week. Police discovered the two suspects, who appeared in court on Monday, as they were loading the stolen container with copper in it onto a P. Weakley truck. According to Epic Transport Regional Manager, Mr Werner Swartz, after police questioned the driver he was released. “After police arrested the suspects, our driver was also questioned, but released

copper, which is currently in Nampol’s possession, is valued at N$2.92 million. The copper arrived from the Tsumeb Copper Smelters, and disappeared shortly after. Police are still busy with investigations and anticipate to make more arrests in regards to the stolen containers. According to Inspector Erastus Iikuyu, Namport has reported 40 containers missing, of which only ten have been recovered. Inspector Iikuyu also confirmed that they are still investigating the case of the other missing container with stolen copper valued at N$3.4 million.

Effluent Water Pumped Into Lagoon Alleged to Cause Flamingo Deaths

Siglinde de Villliers Following last week’s article ‘Flamingo Deaths Spark Speculations’, a number of coastal residents have expressed concerns about effluent water being released into the lagoon. The Namib Independent decided to investigate as to whether this could be a contributing factor to the bird deaths. “When I went for a walk I came across this foul smelling water being pumped into the lagoon. I was immediately alarmed by the sight and wondered whether this could not be the cause for the flamingo deaths,” an elderly Walvis Bay resident said. Another reader sent in pictures of suspicious water being pumped into the lagoon, adding to the amount

of growing concerns. According to Public Relations Manager Kevin Adams from the Walvis Bay Municipality, the numerous pipes pump purified effluent water into the lagoon on an infrequent basis. “It is not a case of pumping effluent water into the lagoon on a day-to-day basis, but rather a case of pumping it into the lagoon if there is too much water in the system and it has to go somewhere,” Adams said. Adams also added that the flamingos are not suddenly exposed to the effluent water and that excess water has been pumped into the lagoon for a number of years. “The flamingos have only been dying recently, whereas the water has been pumped into the lagoon for quite a while, thus the two are hardly

connected,” he stated. “The same effluent water that is being pumped into the lagoon has also been pumped into the manmade wetlands for a number of years now, and no bird deaths have been reported in that area.” According to Adams, the purified effluent water is pumped into the lagoon in tandem with the Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia (CETN). Susan Roux, Acting Chairperson of the CETN, said: “The Lesser Flamingos drink water directly from the pipes in question; however it is the Greater Flamingos that are dying and not the lesser ones that are affected. Up to now we have established no links between flamingo deaths and the effluent water pipes.” She continued to say that they are still waiting for the autopsy results in order to establish what the exact causes for the flamingo deaths are. Various independent researchers are still investigating as to why the flamingos are dying by the bucket loads. Apart from having been undernourished, the dead flamingos also contained some chemical toxins, although their concentration was not enough to establish a link. A lot more extensive research needs to be done and the coastal community is eagerly awaiting the results.

Namdock 3 Commissioned

Dorcas Mhungu Elgin Brown and Hamer (EBH) Namibia recently commissioned the Pannamax floating dock Namdock 3 at the port of Walvis Bay.

The Minister of Works and Transport, Erkki Nghimtina, delivered a speech on behalf of Prime Minister Hage Geingob. He said Namdock 3 is a milestone development not only for Namibia but for the future of the entire West African ship repair industry. Together with its majority shareholder Namport, and other shareholder DCD groups, the Public Private Partnership is advancing Namibia’s Vision 2030 goals, Geingob said. The Pannamax floating dock has a lifting capacity of 15 000 tons, making EBH capable of offering a full turnkey ship repair service to clients. “Namibia’s Vision 2030 sees a prosperous and industrialised Namibia developed by the nation’s human resources, enjoying peace, harmony and political stability,” the Prime Minister said. He noted that EBH had acquired and installed the new dock to remain competitive and Namport needs to keep abreast with such developments by constructing the new container terminal with a design depth of

-18m chart datum. Since the development will make the port of Walvis Bay the first to on the west coast of Africa to have a depth of -18m chart datum Geingob urged Namport to embark on the expansion program as a matter of urgency. The SADC gateway project will boast the port’s fuel offloading capacity to 60 000 dead weight ton and the new bulk and break bulk common user facility with a design depth of -21m chart datum will allow for accommodating the coal from Botswana as well as the local iron-ore and other minerals from Nambia. Speaking at the same occasion, Kosmas Egumbo, Chairperson of the Board of Directors EBH Namibia, said Walvis Bay has scored numerous successes in the past seven years by creating employment and made exponential growth all round. “EBH Namibia will be committed to job creation and the development of the local community through skills upliftment. It was one of the priorities of this project that newly created job opportunities would be offered to local residents,” he stated. In terms of status and benchmarking with other west coast African shipping yards, EBH says it is leading the market in the southern part of West Africa south of the Equator.

Areva Donates N$1 Million to

Erongo Development Foundation Dorcas Mhungu Areva Namibia donated N$1 million to the Erongo Development Foundation (EDF) and an additional N$100 000 for the construction of an extra classroom at resource strained Kolin Secondary School in Arandis. Member of Parliament and chairperson of the National Council and EDF, Asser Kapere, applauded Areva Namibia for its corporate social responsibility program that gives back part of its profits to the community to empower local communities and create employment opportunities. “I wish to urge other companies

operating in Erongo region to emulate the good example set by Areva Namibia, particularly by taking their corporate social responsibility very seriously by ploughing back part of their profits into the communities they are operating from,” Kapere pleaded. The funds donated will be used solely for the Erongo Finance Credit Scheme that advances loans to small businesses in Erongo region who have no collateral. Since the inception of the scheme, 180 entrepreneurs have been bank rolled and benefitted from the fund. Kapere said the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT)

as a local institution was contracted to build the classroom while the Ministry of Works and Transport provided the necessary technical and supervisory expertise during the construction process. “The construction of this classroom should be seen as an important undertaking that will contribute towards a quality and efficient learning environment for our children, more so at the Kolin Foundation Secondary School, where the influx of people looking for employment in the mining companies put strain on school resources,” Kapere said.

Namibia Celebrates Success Story at

Siglinde de Villiers On Tuesday 29 October, the Namib Independent spent a day at the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) ending today to see if Namibia lived up to its choice as the most suitable location for the 2013 ATWS. The theme of responsible tourism was expressed in three words: Imagine, Inspire, and Invest. At the event, all the international and national delegates were gathered in a large tent, listening to a presentation by Zita Cobb entitled Requiem or Anthem. After a short coffee break, the delegates were divided into three groups, having peer to peer exchange discussions in different venues. Over 650 international delegates, comprising tour operators, travel agents, tourism boards, destination managers, outfitters and media professionals from more than 60 countries met to share in these official networking sessions to challenge conventional thoughts on conservation and promote strong conservation and green practices.

The ATWS is organised by the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) every year. Carrie Horner, a spokesperson for the ATTA, said they do it to “provide a platform for people across the globe to share in learning and educating industry partners and finding cutting edge solutions to problems within the tourism industry.” Maxi Louis from Team Namibia added, “This conference allows countries to discuss bigger issues at hand, such as responsible tourism and its future, our cultures and markets.” According to ATTA, the future of responsible tourism development is in the hands of the global adventure travel community. “To develop a powerful and measurably sustainable future for adventure generations to come, it requires that together we imagine, inspire and invest,” Ms Horner said. To imagine includes that which must be realised to ensure a sustainable future. Inspire involves getting others to join and do what is needed to pursue this future. Lastly invest involves

time, energy, resources and funding to achieve the shared vision. Namibia is the first African country selected to host the ATWS. However, there is more to obtaining that privilege than simply being selected. According to Sem Shikongo, Director of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, Namibia had to extensively bid with contending countries. “The bidding document submitted by Namibia essentially focused on our comparative advantages,” Shikongo said. “Our proposal focused on Namibia’s infrastructure, the landscape, the animals and its cultures. We have the greatest African wildlife recovery story ever told, and it echos beyond our borders. “It is a story of a nation committed to conservation and empowerment of its people, cultures and wildlife.” According to Shikongo, 44 % of Namibia is under some form of conservation management and thus Namibia is a good example of combining tourism with the environment. “This story of how Namibia imagined, inspired, and invested simply has to be celebrated and shared with the rest of the world,” Shikongo added. Namibia has gained international recognition of what is possible in the face of extraordinary odds. “Namibia offers one of the most compelling success stories in tourism today, one of joint venture tourism and partnerships between communal conservancies and tourism enterprises. It is a model that should be put on display. Our delegates are sure to gain immense insights from their experiences in Namibia,” ATTA President Shannon Stowell said when he visited Namibia in June 2012. Shikongo concluded, “Many delegates have told me that they are happy to have come, that there is hope for other countries to follow in our footsteps and to do what we have done.”

New Study Room Donated to Kids Haven The Walvis Bay Kids Haven once again received a helping hand from the community, and this time from the company Panel to Panel Insulated Panel Manufacturers CC (PTP), who donated a portable room to them, which they will use as a study room. Namibia Stevedoring and Rent-a-Plant delivered the mobile unit to the Kids Haven premises earlier this week. Present at the handover was General Manager, David Rust Carstens, Project Manager, Johan de Beer, Financial Manager Jacques Crowther, and from the Kids Haven, Tanya Pretorius.

“Our business manufactures and erects, among other, office and housing units from modular panels, and we wish to fulfil our social responsibility by donating one of our mobile office units to the Walvis Bay Kids Haven," said Crowther. Crowther also said that one of their objectives is to serve as an example to the public, and challenge the rest of the business community to also fulfil their social responsibility towards the community. Pretorius said that this study room is just what they need and a true blessing. “All we need now is some computers for the older kids to do their school projects and homework on,” she said.

Coastal Region Warrants Valencia Uranium Development Bank Branch

Jerome Mutumba Dorcas Mhungu The Development Bank of Namibia has turned to the Erongo region as the next economically viable investment destination. Their coastal branch is planned to be opened in the first half of 2014.

Jerome Mutumba, DBN Corporate Communications Manager, said the decision was taken following an increase in demand for the bank’s services and products in Erongo region over the past few years and a high probability that the demand will continue to rise. “By being closer to stakeholders in Erongo, the bank will be best able to serve the interest of entrepreneurs and efficiently support economic development in the region.

This regional representation will be replicated over time in other regions when and where justified and within the means of the bank as it grows,” Mutumba said. He explained that the regional expansion programs are part of the institution’s growth plans and its strategy to gradually improve its accessibility to Namibian entrepreneurs in its growth strides. “DBN’s investment in Erongo region should actually not only be measured in terms of the office the Bank will be opening. We consider our substantive investment to be the amount of loans the Bank has extended and will extend to support business activities in the region. This is really the true measure of DBN’s investments in Erongo. “On 28 October 2013, the Bank’s exposure to the Erongo region had amounted to N$92 592 992.42,” Mutumba noted in his response to a query on the investment worth for the Erongo branch. The location of the bank will be either in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay. Administrative personnel are working on the exact location of the bank, Mutomba conceded and added that DBN will announce the location when a decision has been finalised. He also said by having a team on the ground in Erongo, accessibility to DBN finance by entrepreneurs will be greatly improved and the Bank will be able to identify opportunities more easily. Mutumba explained that SMEs particularly will benefit greatly, because the need to incur travelling expenses to Windhoek to either access information or conclude agreements with DBN will be a thing of the past. “For DBN a presence in the region will improve our loan monitoring operations and the provision of other business support services directly to our clients in Erongo,” Mutumba said.

Phishing scams are typically fraudulent emails that appear to come from legitimate entities such as financial institutions, government agencies or other well-known organisations or companies, which seek to steal personal information that will be used to effect fraudulent purchases or transactions on private accounts. “Beware, phishing or fraudulent emails may contain links to fake websites, contain attachments for you to open or request a client to share personal or financial information by using clever or compelling language such as an urgent need to update your information, decline a payment or communicate with a client to ensure the security of your accounts,” explains Standard Bank Namibia’s Head of Marketing, Thaddius Maswahu.

13\10\287

He adds that when you click on a link to a fake website, your computer is infected with malicious software that enables the perpetrators to capture a client’s username and password. This can be any information like login details which is then sent out to where it was programmed in the first place. Similarly text-message phishing or a smishing scam is a phishing attempt sent via an SMS or text message to a mobile phone or device. The purpose of text message phishing is the same as traditional email phishing which convinces recipients to share their sensitive or personal information.

Siglinde de Villiers Following claims in national press that Valencia Uranium Project has retrenched the majority of its staff, the company came forward and refuted these allegations.Their comment was that the exploration phase has come to an end, thus Forsys Metals Corporation has decided to reduce its staff members. In an interview with the Namib Independent, General Manager Dag Kullmann said that the Valencia Project has finished its drilling activities and is reducing its staff members accordingly. “The first phase of the exploration has come to an end. The change in activities requires a change in staff, regardless of whether the Uranium price is high or low,” Kullmann said. Kullmann explained that in line with their exploration programme, they had to reduce their staff by 16 voluntary and notified retrenchments.

“The people were aware of the reduction in numbers. Due to ongoing work on the existing programmes we decided to maintain the staff levels that the work requires,” Kullmann laid out. He confirmed that there are currently still 14 full time employees working on a couple of good, solid projects. According to Kullmann, the Valencia project has been consolidated into the Norasa Uranium Project. “It is a technically sound and financially viable project. We are waiting to ride out the depressed Uranium price to enter the market as a strong entity,” he concluded. The Namib Independent reported earlier this year that due to the dip the Uranium price took in the global market, Rossing Uranium Mine was to lay off 276 workers. However, despite other media reports, this is not the case with Forsys Metals Corporation’s Valencia Project.

As we gradually approach the holiday season especially towards the end of the year, fraudsters are also devising new ways of swindling individuals or businesses through various scams like phishing.

Scales Down Staff

Sex Workers & Truck Drivers Tips on how to prevent phishing scams: • Do not open suspicious emails or emails from unknown parties. Never respond to or click on any links, attachments, photos, graphics, etc., in an email that you receive from an unknown sender or that is suspicious. If you receive a suspicious email, delete it from your system. • If malware is detected or suspected on a computer, consult with a computer security or anti-virus specialist to remove the malicious software. Always use anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-spamming security software on your system and ensure that all available security patches are installed and remain current. • Never disclose via text message any personal information, including account numbers, passwords, or any combination of sensitive information that could be used fraudulently. Use caution if you receive a text message expressing an urgent need for you to update your information, activate an account, or verify your identity by calling a phone number or submitting information on a website. These messages may be part of a phishing scam conducted by fraudsters to capture your confidential account information and commit fraud. Dorcas Mhungu The Walvis Bay Corridor Group Workplace Wellness program has introduced an initiative dubbed “Moonlight,” targeting long haul truck drivers, sex workers and members of the public they interact with. It offers counselling, HIV testing and sexually transmitted infections screening services at roadside mobile clinics. Edward Shivute, Project Manager at WBCG, told the Namib Independent that the group has come up with a focus to facilitate the development of effective workplace wellness programs in the transport sector and implemented the transport corridor based wellness projects through the establishment of roadside wellness centres. “This initiative ‘Moonlight’ testing is an extension to current workplace wellness projects and corridor based projects. The main

objective is to provide health services such as risk reduction counselling sessions, HIV counselling and testing, sexually transmitted infections screening and social behaviour change and communication sessions,” Shivute said. He explained that the “Moonlight” service is conducted from 5pm to 11pm during the time most truck drivers cross the border after border clearing procedures. He said because the drivers usually sleep overnight and during this period interact with sex workers and the community, this poses a risk to engage in sexual activities. “We as WBCG come in to provide them with tools to prevent them contracting HIV and STIs and provide them the opportunity to know their status and we do this through Moonlight services when waiting to proceed with their journeys,” Shivute explained. He expressed gratitude to WBCG strategic partners, USAID, who are funding the project through the Society for Family Health. He also acknowledged the role played by King’s Daughters who are assisting to mobilise commercial sex workers to come for HIV testing. The initiative started in April in Windhoek and was introduced to the Erongo region in September. Overall, about 2 600 key populations have used the facility and in six months, the program implementer aspires to reach a target 6000 key population persons.

Stamp of Approval as Benson is Honoured Dorcas Mhungu

On Tuesday Nampost joined the recent fray of appreciative corporates by handing over its special edition of Johanna Benson philately stamps and a oneyear paid postal box to the Golden Girl. The stamps launch comes hot in the heels of Government’s N$1.5 million house, which was handed over to the Paralympic sprinter a fortnight ago. Nampost Chief Executive Officer Festus Hangula, in a message read on his behalf by Hannelie Maasdorp, Philately Manager, said, “Johanna Benson did Namibia proud by winning the country’s first Paralympic Gold Medal in 2012.” Nampost has produced two different stamp products

comprising 5000 normal stamps that will be available at all post offices right across Namibia and a five-stamp personalised stamp sheet where the customer will have an opportunity to associate themselves directly with the Golden Girl by having their picture alongside the image of Johanna. This service is only provided in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay and a sheet is being sold for N$40. Nampost will give N$10 from each personalised stamp sale to Johanna. She will donate the sum to a charity organisation of her choice. “To win Namibia’s first Paralympic Gold Medal is of course a marvellous achievement, an achievement that we continue to celebrate. And a first will always be a

first. Johanna, we salute you,” Hangula stated. He said Johanna’s victory and subsequent fame have drawn admiration from people all around the globe and congratulations have come from Europe, America and Australia. Hangula added that the Paralympic Games were significant in bringing athletes with disabilities to focus on the sports competitions rather than their disabilities. “These are of course sentiments that Namibia and Nampost concur with and encourage,” Hangula said and congratulated the Sports Ministry and sporting administrators for the provision of support and development structures that enable athletes to reach great heights. Hangula also chronicled

A unique and delicate ship to ship operation that required the transfer of riser pipes used in the oil and gas industry was conducted successfully about 10 kilometres off the Port of Walvis Bay. The transfer of the 1 166 ton heavy pipes marked a first for the country and the port. Ben van Wyk, Manager at Pinnacle Logistics (Namibia), said the exercise took one and half days to complete and involved three shifts of twelve Namibian workers per shift. Pinnacle Logistics, agent for Universal Africa Lines (UAL), undertook the transfer of the massive 53 risers onto its vessel, the UAL Houston. Stevedoring Services provided the labour. The riser pipes, which are 24 metres long and 1.3 metres in diameter and each weigh an average 22 tons, were shipped to Lobito in Angola. “The operation went smoothly and it all happened off port limits. “This is the first time such an operation took place in Namibia.

INVITATION: RENTAL OFFICE SPACE 01/2013 The MVA Fund is a statutory body established to design, develop, promote, and implement motor vehicle accident and injury prevention measures. The Fund provides assistance and benefits to all people injured and dependants of those killed in motor vehicle accidents in accordance with MVA Fund Act, Act 10 of 2007.

At Pinnacle we are very proud to be associated with such a massive operation,” van Wyk said. Annalize Krause, Shipping Manager at UAL Namibia (Pty) Ltd, said the decision to do a ship-to-ship movement of the cargo from a drill ship to the newly built UAL Houston was based on the fact that the draft in the port is too shallow and the port could not accommodate the drill ship. Krause mentioned that the UAL Houston is one of five new and unique, innovative vessels in the UAL fleet built in the Netherlands. “This vessel is considered unique because of the application of the Groot Cross Bow – an innovative bow shape with wave piercing abilities. “This ensures it will have less slamming and maintain speed easier when compared to the more conventional bow shapes with bow flare,” Krause explained. The modus operandi is a massive energy saver as less fuel is burned and there is a significant reduction in the carbon dioxide output.

Municipality of Walvis

Initiated Drought Relief Programme In an exclusive interview with Her Worship the Mayor of Walvis Bay, Uilika Nambahu, she told the Namib Independent a bit more about the Resources Mobilisation Drive that was launched on Wednesday 30 October. This programme allows the community to become actively involved in showing compassion to fellow citizens affected by the drought. Following the State Of Emergency declared by President Hifikepunye Pohamba earlier this year in May, the Office of the Mayor felt that, given the declaration by the highest office in the land, the drought situation must be of such a serious nature that it warrants the involvement of each local authority. Thus, the Municipality of Walvis Bay has initiated the Resources Mobilisation Drive to assist and help fellow Namibians who are severely afflicted by the drought. “As a local authority tasked with the provision of essential services to our community, it is prudent for us to spearhead this initiative and become the focal point for the donated goods,” the Mayor explained. According to the President, our drought is said to be the worst in over 30 years. In light of this the Mayor announced that the aim of the project is to assist droughtaffected families survive the brunt of hopelessness associated with this drought situation by making the essentials available to needy family members. The Mayor continued to explain that the Office of the Mayor will serve as the focal co-ordination point of delivery by those community members or corporate entities who wish to contribute through donations. “The Resources Mobilisation Drive is about sending a request to the community for the donation of funds or goods to the Office of the Mayor, who will then forward it to the relevant authorities tasked with the provision of drought relief goods to drought-stricken Namibians country wide,” the Mayor said. According to her, these organisations include the Disaster Management Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister, the Red Cross and other community based organisations that are confronted with the despair of Namibians on a daily basis. According to the Mayor, any private persons or companies

wishing to support the Resources Mobilisation Drive can approach the Office of the Mayor, state what they wish to donate and then will be assisted with advice on logistics for

collection or delivery. In addition, any financial contributions can be forwarded to the Office of the Mayor by cheques made out in favour of the Mayoral Relief Fund.

Peter’s Antiques Celebrates 30 Years

Siglinde de Villiers The month of November will see Peter’s Antiques celebrating their 30th anniversary. Since it was founded, the shop has expanded from selling only antiques to offering interesting artefacts, historic and other collectibles as well as souvenirs from all over Africa. Ludwig Haller, Peter’s son, recalls how his father used to collect ever since he was a child. “When he noticed that there was a market as well as interest in collectibles he founded this shop in 1983 to sell his items,” Ludwig says. According to Ludwig, Peter’s Antiques initially only traded in antiques such as stamps,

coins, silver and porcelain. However, the interest in colonial history and literature grew and the shop started to accumulate and include these items as the years went by. “In 1976 me, my brother Michael and my parents, Peter and Gaby, travelled through the African continent. That is where our personal collection of Africa started. All items were either bought by me or my father and from the mid 90s, African art from over 20 different countries was exhibited in the shop,” Ludwig relates. He has travelled to 40 different countries since then, to find suppliers and objects to add to the shop. Although Ludwig has been part of the shop since it was founded, he and his wife only took over in July 2006.

Peter’s Antiques does not only import items to other countries but also exports them. “If we have to send an object overseas, we manufacture a wooden frame for each parcel to protect it against damage wherever it goes. Up to now, there have been no problems with this method,” he explains. The shop itself is divided up into several sections. These range from old collectibles such as coins dating back to 1748, which were found on a shipwreck along the Namibian coast, to aged furniture and militaria from the First and Second World War. “The shop houses collectibles form the Namibian past as well as colonial time. I can show you millions of interesting things, like handcuffs for thumbs,” Ludwig indulges. By means of their own private publishing company, Peter’s Antiques is able to reproduce old maps in addition to autobiographies and historic literature, telling stories of long ago. A small section of the shop sells items made by autistic children. “There are no schools or centres

for these children. Autism is a lifelong condition that cannot be cured with medicine, only treated in the certain ways in which one handles such persons. However, people do not really know how to deal with those who are affected by this condition and so we have created the Baby Step Collection to raise funds and create more awareness for children struggling with Asperger and autism,” Ludwig says. Peter’s Antiques has a ‘Treasures of Africa’ section, which displays artefacts, jewellery and hunting sets from the Ovahimba and Bushmen tribes of Namibia, as well as mask culture from all over Africa. In addition to various souvenirs, the shop sells raffia bags and hand woven wild silk scarves from Madagascar, amongst many other cultural items. “We know the background of every single piece in this shop,” Ludwig states, proudly. “Whenever a new item enters the shop, we research its meaning and story, how and what it was used for and its current value.” This makes Peter’s Antique quite unique, for such inside

knowledge is rare to find in other places. According to Ludwig, some items are truly unique and rich in cultural meaning. “We feel that certain items are museum items, meant for exhibition and not for sale. Peter’s Antiques thus collaborates with the museum, where these objects are displayed in order to preserve a rich cultural heritage for the community.” Peter’s Antiques plays a very important role in the coastal community. Ludwig calls our generation a ‘Wegschmeißgesellschaft’ – a shallow, throw-away society in which culture and tradition get lost. “With everything becoming digital, there are no traces, nor records of our lives. We follow traditions without knowing why and so forget the meaning of our cultural heritage. It seems like it is not important for our generation to preserve and cherish our cultural heritage. This often makes me wonder as to what our grandchildren will know and have from our lives,” Luwig concludes.

Tempting though it is to choose a countertop based on looks alone, a material's durability, maintenance and, of course, cost are also important factors to consider when making a selection for a kitchen remodel. Find a good fit Homeowners have to assess the way they live before settling on a countertop surface - If you have three kids and your making peanut butter and jam sandwiches on the countertops every day, you might not want to go with that white granite. Countertop choices The good news is, if homeowners have their hearts set on a certain look but the material just doesn't match with their lifestyle, odds are there's another material that does. Granite, the top choice in countertops, is available in a variety of shades such as blacks, whites, greens, corals and beiges, and no two pieces are exactly the same. Granite is available in two finishes. A polished finish results in a shiny look and often darkens the appearance of the stone, while honing is soft and matte. Costs for granite depend on many variables,

including colour, finish and origin of the stone. Obviously, granite that's relatively easy to get, should be affordable, however, if you choose a granite that has to be imported from Timbuktu, and only ships once a year, that can be pretty expensive. Other natural stone materials, like marble, limestone and soapstone, are softer than granite and require delicate use and greater care. All stone countertops must be sealed periodically. Engineered stone countertops come in a wider variety of colours than natural stone countertops, are more durable and are a cinch to maintain. However, engineered stone won't save any money over granite: the two materials cost roughly the same. Solid surface countertops have a lot of appeal. They come in countless colours, are seamless, resist stains and scratches can be buffed out. One word of caution, though: Hot pans can damage solidsurface countertops. Concrete countertops, which can be completely customised with pigments, are gaining popularity. Concrete is available in several different finishes: trowel (smooth), ground (sanded to expose the sand aggregate) and pressed

(a tool is used to reveal marble-like veining). Extreme or abrupt changes in temperature may cause concrete to warp or curl, damp sponges left on the counter can cause discoloration and acidic spills may etch the surface. To keep a concrete countertop looking its best, it's advisable to seal them up to four times per year and wax with a paste every two to three months. Wood countertops, like butcher block, instantly warm up a kitchen. They are easy to clean and any scratches can be sanded out. Water damages butcher block quite easily, though, so wood countertops must be oiled frequently to seal the surface. Laminate is the most affordable countertop material on the market and comes in an array of colours and designs. Laminate can scorch if a hot pan touches the surface and has a reputation for scratching easily. However, the product has made strides in scratch-resistance in recent years. On the edge Square edges are standard on most countertops, but decorative edges like radius, bull nose, bevel, egg and ogee - while a bit more expensive - are another way to customize a kitchen. Availability of edges varies based on countertop materials. Mix and match Can't decide on just one material? Then mix and match surfaces. But before making a decision on countertop material, see the surface in person, whether that means visiting a showroom or viewing samples in-home.

Designing a Wet Room - five things that you should consider Wet room drainage

A wet room will turn any bath or shower room into a luxurious and practical space. If you are planning your own wet room project, there are some important factors that should be considered. Here is Inside Out’s guide to five important wet room planning considerations.

When creating a wet room the shower area and surrounding floor are formed as one continuous surface. Consequently a wet room drain will often be positioned lower than drains of shower tray or bath and for this reason the location of the shower waste and drain pipe should be carefully considered. There must be adequate space below the wet room floor in order to achieve a fall of 1:40 on the drainage waste pipe and when constructing a wet room on top of a suspended floor the position of the floor joists must be considered so that they do not impact on the waste position.

Selecting the correct wet room kit and floor former There are many different types of wetroom formers (sometimes referred to as wet room shower trays) available on the market so it is important to select a former and wet room tanking kit suitable for your particular application. The choice of wet room floor former will be dictated by the substrate, commonly solid concrete or suspended wooden joists, and the waterproof tanking membrane should be suitable for the floor and wall material, usually stone or lightweight stud construction.

Wet room shower screens and shower head position In a wet room the choice of shower screen and shower head position should be carefully considered. If you are planning an open wet room

without a shower screen, or alternatively a small wet room where space may preclude the use of a screen, the wet floor former will need to be large enough to collect and channel the water to the wet room drain. Commonly a frameless glass wet room screen or shower enclosure is installed to contain the water within the wet area. If a fixed walk-in shower screen is used, ensure that it is large enough to contain water deflected from the body when showering and that the shower head is either ceiling mounted and away from the open end of the screen or wall mounted adjacent to the shower screen. A walk-in shower screen should only be considered a water deflector and therefore some degree of moisture will escape into the outer wet room. A full frameless shower enclosure can look stunning and will contain the moisture within the wet floor area. It is still advisable to position the shower head and drain away from the shower door if at all possible as this will help to clear the water and minimise transfer to the outer bathroom floor.

Wet room flooring It is possible to install a low maintenance vinyl floor in a wet room, although tiles are most commonly used for wet room flooring. Vinyl floors provide slip resistance and are easy to clean. However, they are often found in commercial applications and can look a little industrial, unless this is the look that you are after. When selecting wet room floor tiles slip resistance is an important consideration;

a suitable tile should carry a high slip resistance. Within the area of the wet room floor former the tiles have to be shaped to create the fall to the drain gully. Mosaic tiles will generally be slightly easier to lay and provide a greater degree of slip resistance, however they require more grouting and maintenance. Larger format tiles with narrower grout lines will be easier to keep clean and allow water to drain more easily than mosaics. If you are using a standard cement based grout ensure that it is flexible, suitable for wet rooms and of high quality. Do not be tempted to cut costs here. However, it should be noted that cement based grout is NOT waterproof and should only be considered water resistant. For a completely water proof solution, an epoxy based grout should be used. Professional installation is recommended as epoxy based grout is hard to apply, making a high quality finish difficult to achieve.

Maintaining your wet room Drying the wet room floor with a squeegee after showering will prevent water soaking into cement based grouts, which can cause it to degrade and crack. In hard water areas, calcium deposits can form on cement grouts and this can be difficult to clean. On a final note, natural stone wet room floors should be cleaned and sealed regularly to maintain their condition and prevent saturation.

Siglinde de Villiers Harsh weather conditions at the coast are a wellknown problem for all outside appliances, especially air conditioners. A unique, innovative design by John Kotze from Technicool, however, offers an easy solution to the challenge as it manifests itself in the air conditioning sector. Since its inception in May 2003, Technicool has become a major contributor to the coastal refrigeration and air-conditioning industry. Working mainly with air conditioners, Technicool thought it imperative to protect these investments from harsh climatic conditions. In the past, wooden covers were often used to provide some means of protection. However, they were expensive, required high maintenance, and did not successfully keep moisture, dust and mica away. Thus the idea of the “Technicover” was born.

These covers were manufactured from durable ripstop canvas and included a high-density net for airflow in necessary areas. The “Technicover” formed an exclusive add-on service for Technicool’s customers, but other companies soon followed suit. Thus John decided to apply for exclusive patent rights. Technicover has since then been registered with the Namibian Patent Authority and is the cheapest, most convenient way to protect airconditioning units by repelling moisture, salt and mica. Custom designs provide a snugly fit and are functional at the same time, for they do not need to be removed when the unit is in use. According to John, Techicool has acquired an industrial sewing machine, bulk canvas and netting as well as trained staff to manufacture “Technicovers.” This allows them to provide excellent service to their customers, tailor-made to their specific wishes.

Living Room Lighting Ideas

Whether it's for reading or relaxing, the right lighting helps us do all our living better. Add instant style and function to your living spaces with these ideas for accent lighting, chandeliers, sconces, and more. Chandeliers

The most classic of all living room lighting fixtures is the chandelier. Generally positioned in the centre of the room directly over the main seating area, these elaborate lighting fixtures are at once the room's main source of illumination and, at the same time, works of art. Their sculptural shapes fill the void between the ceiling and the living space, and their twinkling, often candle-

How To Paint A Garage Floor

Painting your garage floor with epoxy paint will help keep it free of stains and deterioration, and give your garage floor a tough finish for a showroom look.

Step 1

Make Sure the Work Area is well Ventilated The garage in the "before" image has cracks in the floor as well as stains and deterioration showing. This project requires epoxy paint, a tough finish that will hold up longer to wear and resist cracking and peeling. The garage floor will be easier to maintain. Since this project will involve paints and cleaners that may produce harmful fumes, make sure that your work area is well ventilated. Wear eye protection and protective gloves to protect your eyes and hands against caustic chemicals.

Step 2

Clean the Concrete Floor Before you begin painting, sweep and clean the floor thoroughly. Then, to remove stains, use a 3-to-1 water-tobleach mixture or a commercially prepared concrete or driveway cleaner. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection. Spray the cleaner on the stains, allow it to soak in for a few minutes, and then scrub the stain using a stiff-bristle brush. After you've scrubbed the floor, rinse the entire area well with clean water -- starting at the back of the garage and moving forward. For tough stains, you may want to use a pressure washer to clean the concrete quickly and thoroughly. Pressure washers are available at most rental centres.

Step 4

A good primer coat is the key to a long-lasting paint job. Allow the primer to dry for at least 8 hours before applying the paint top-coat.

Etch the Surface Next, you may need to etch the surface of the concrete -- a process that opens the pores of the concrete surface so that the paint can be absorbed better. To check whether your floor needs to be etched, sprinkle a small amount of water on the floor. If it is absorbed into the concrete quickly, the floor probably doesn't need etching. If the water does not absorb quickly, apply a commercial concrete etcher following the manufacturer's instructions. A "fizzing" as the etcher is applied indicates that it's working. After etching, allow the floor to dry thoroughly (at least overnight) before you begin painting. Fans will help speed the drying process. The properly prepared surface will have a texture roughly similar to medium-grit sandpaper.

Step 6:

Apply the First Coat of Paint

There are many types of paint and primer products available for this type of job. Read and follow the manufacturer's instructions that come with the ones you select. Make sure that the paint is well mixed and apply a thin even first coat. Allow the first coat to dry for about 24 hours before deciding whether you want to apply a second coat. Important: To apply the paint, be sure to use nylon brushes and lint-free, all-purpose, solvent- and waterresistant roller covers. Avoid applying more than two coats. Wait about Step 5 24 hours before walking on the newly painted Apply the Primer surface, and wait about a week before driving on it. You'll likely need to do touch-up work on the heavyBefore applying paint, apply a primer coat using a traffic areas of the floor every year or so. long-handled paint roller.

Step 3

Repair the Cracks Once the floor is clean and dry, repair any cracks in the concrete using concrete/mortar-repair compound for smaller cracks or concrete patch for larger ones. Follow the manufacturer's instructions, and make sure that the cracks are very clean and dry before applying the compound.

m Oshiwambo MOT O R ING Nissan Launches First Electric Car in South Africa Article by IOL Motoring The world’s best-selling electric vehicle is now on sale in South Africa - at an eyewatering R446 000.

However, and before the earth crusaders get their hopes up, the Nissan Leaf automatically transforms into a coal-powered vehicle the second it lands on South African soil, thanks to Eskom’s antiquated powergeneration methods. Nissan readily admits that this is not going to be a big seller in South Africa anytime soon. That’s one thing we can be thankful for, because next thing you know Eskom would be telling us to cancel our plans and stay at home to prevent load shedding. Nor does Nissan make any claims that this is a highway warrior for weekend getaways. Its official driving range, between charges, is 195km and we suspect that a somewhat lower figure would be obtained in realworld driving conditions. Still, even if it only managed a shade over 100km, that would still more than cover the average daily commute. Unfortunately, as long as Eskom continues to generate electricity by burning fossil fuels, driving a Leaf will do little to reduce the smog visible in the early morning. While an overnight charge will be the order of the day, buyers who are able to reach one of the selected Gauteng dealers will be able to use Nissan’s ‘quick charge’ units for free, which can provide an 80 percent charge in 30 minutes. If you’re in a rush they’ll even do a 10 minute charge, which should allow about 50km. Initially the Leaf will only be sold at selected Gauteng dealerships, with Durban and Cape Town establishments set to follow during the course of 2014. Nissan justifies the R446

000 price tag by taking overall running costs into consideration. Nissan SA’s MD Mike Whitfield showed us some charts outlining the six-year running costs of the Leaf. Including the purchase price, this would amount to R470 000 (R22 500 for electricity and R1 500 for maintenance), versus R484 000 for a high-spec C-segment petrolpowered hatchback - which Nissan would not name. It further illustrated that travelling 2500km a month in a Leaf would cost just R310 per month. At the heart of the Leaf is an 80kW/254Nm electric motor, fed by a Lithium-ion battery pack. The longevity of this battery, given that it’s the vehicle’s most expensive component, could be of concern to owners, but Nissan estimates that it will still have around 80 percent of its capacity in ten years from now. As for performance, Nissan quotes a nottoo-shabby 11.5-second 0-100km/h sprint and 144km/h top speed, but range anxiety will probably prevent most owners from putting those claims to the test very often. Luxury is very much the order of the day, however, with all Leafs featuring a 180mm touch-screen infotainment system with reverse camera, heated leather seats and automatic climate control. To save the skins of pedestrians who can’t hear it coming, the car also has an Audible Vehicle Sound system. As mentioned, Nissan has no big sales ambitions for this vehicle and as Whitfield puts it, the company will let the vehicle take off in its own time, whenever that may be. We can’t imagine that time coming anytime soon, particularly as (unlike overseas markets) the government does not provide any incentives for buying electric vehicles, nor is our electricity all that clean. And lets face it, many of us love the open road. Yet perhaps the Leaf should be admired for what it is - a pioneering novelty that looks to the future of motoring, as far off as it might seem right now. It is a bold move on the part of Nissan South Africa.

The Namib Independent spent a day at the Adventure Travel World Summit (ATWS) and experienced how the theme for the 2013 ATWS is summarised in three words: Imagine, Inspire and Invest. namibia proved a very suitable location for the theme, for our country tells a story of remarkable wildlife recovery in collaboration with the tourism industry. Thus one of the main topics of the summit discussed how sustainable development can be incorporated into the tourism industry without damaging the environment. In addition, the summit also provided a platform for 650 international delegates from over 60 countries to share their experiences and form networking alliances.

The Namport Erongo Business and Tourism Expo Andrea van Rhyn The Namport Erongo Business and Tourism Expo officially opened yesterday. Hundreds of exhibitors came to the fair to display their goods and services to the public. Today the exhibition will officially be opened to the public, from 10 am to 9pm. Sponsored by keeping the connection

Manica Golf Day Strengthening Relationships Strengthening relationships and creating new friendships were the themes of the recent Manica Golf Fun Day held at Walvis Bay on Friday 25 October 2013. Some 60 golf players representing various companies and institutions participated in the corporate event with balmy weather conditions. The fun day followed the fast-paced American scramble format with the best ball throughout, which allows for non-golfers to participate as well. “Manica has been a sponsor of the annual Namibian Amateur Golf Open, but this year we decided to treat our clients, suppliers and stakeholders with a fun day. The idea was that everyone should have fun, whether they are golf players or not. We wanted to create a relaxed setting where we could build on our relationships, network and above all show our appreciation for your support,” said the General Manager: Public Relations of Manica, Nolito Marques during the prize giving ceremony.

Prizes worth N$25 000 were awarded including an iPad and 42” flat screen TV in a lucky draw. The winners of the tournament were Walvis Bay Ship Chandlers followed by Panavest in second position and Bachmus in third position. Prizes were also given for the best dressed team (Walvis Bay Municipality), the Closest to the Pin (7 - Ben van Wyk; 11 – Percy van Zyl ) and the Longest Drive (1 – Neill Theron; 17 – Emile Vilbert). True to tradition, players were also fined for slight transgressions, of which the most odd one was a player trying to tee-off from on top of a tree. Recognising the Top Learners The top performers of coastal high schools in Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Luderitz were surprised with a different kind of “book prize” for their excellent scholastic performance. Much to the delight of the learners the book prize turned out to be an Asus Fonepad (tablet type phone).

The Currie Cup Final 2013 this time as they were the 19 October

Sharks vs. Western Province 33-19 In front of 46 000 people at a packed to-the-rafters Newlands this showpiece of South African rugby was to be decided. It is the oldest provincial competition in the world and in the Currie Cup certainly the most spectacular and well known of them all. The Sharks have been finalists before, beaten by the same enemy they faced and had something to proof and a few booing mouths to shut. Yes, the continuous (although from a disillusioned few) booing that brilliant athletes have to face when they kick for goal at Newlands. Western Province hosted the Currie Cup final that they once dominated for the first time in twelve years. The roles were only reversed

favourites and the Sharks the underdogs. I do not know how you tax a Springbok-studded team with the burden of being the underdogs unless you have been living under the ground for the last year or so. Murphy’s Law certainly smiled down as much on this game as it did last year. The Sharks dominated all parts of the game except for the scrums were Western Province were more competitive. The highly talented Patrick Lambie landed an early penalty, which was soon followed by a Charl McLeod intercept that saw him sprinting two thirds off the field for a converted try. Province soon after scored a converted try of their own through De Allende in the 9th minute but that was almost the last roll off the dice for them. The Sharks played clever

According to the Public Relations Manager for Manica Group Namibia, Nolito Marques, the company decided to reward these learners as an encouragement for others to follow suit. “Manica is delighted to present these awards to the learners, as we believe their hard work and commitment has been an example for other learners. Commitment and excellence is some of the values of Manica, and it is gratifying to see young people showing the same dedication as we do to our clients and service delivery,” he told the learners and principals at a brief gettogether at the company. He noted that many current and previous staff members of the company used to attend the coastal high schools. “Since Manica’s establishment in 1924, we have seen many promising young people employed with us and later on reaching great heights in their careers. "Most of our employees have all been learners at the coastal schools at one time or another. We

finals-rugby and you could sense the nervousness of Province slowly turn into frustration and later into desperation as the game was taken away from them by a Sharks team that would have beaten any team on that day. They called on the calmness of old war horses like Ndugane who was as calm as the Walvis lagoon on an East Weather evening when put under pressure. Alberts, Daniel and Bismarck du Plessis had the same effect up-front; with new Springbok cap Pieter-Steph du Toit competing brilliantly and sometimes beating Etsebeth at the lineouts, it was difficult to see another outcome than total victory. Western Province were totally useless from the restarts as not one forward was able to field easy catches and they were later to rely on the ‘backs’ to do the dirty work. They were totally disrupted at the back as well and the diminutive three could not pull this game out of the proverbial fire as the Sharks were all over them. They were forced to make plays that they would not usually make. When last did Western Province lose nine of their own line-outs and lived to tell a wining tale? Etsebeth and co. were beaten hands down on the day and credit must go to the Sharks for a very

felt that we needed to give something back to our schools by way of showing our support and encouraging the youth to excel in everything they do.” The invited learners were kept in the dark as to their book prize until the last minute. “The tablet phones were hidden from view in special gift bags. I could see the learners didn’t know what to expect and some seemed slightly bored waiting for the function to finish. However, when we coaxed them to take the ‘book’ out of the bag, their faces lit up instantly,” he said. The learners were also invited to contact the company if they were interested in finding out more about logistics as a possible field of study. Manica invested some N$40 000 in obtaining the special tablet phones for the learners as part of its CSI programme. The company also sponsored gift vouchers (N$5 200) to various Walvis Bay based primary schools and a further N$1 500 to the Helena van Rijn Primary school in Lüderitz.

clever, dominating victory where they outclassed and out-thought Province in every aspect of the game. Charl McLeod also deserves credit for his brace of tries and, of course, Lambie for his 23 points. (45 points in two finals is just sheer class.) So, bragging rights for the Sharks and their supporters for the next year on a clinical performance. Sharks Points: McLeod - 2 tries Conversions: Lambie – 1, Pen - 3 Dropped goals: 3 Western Province Points: De Allende try converted by Catrakilis. Pen – 2, Catrakilis - 1
