fire started in the shack of Annalie Ganases who died, after she fell asleep to candle light. “We think that she fell asleep while a candle was still burning, and that is what caused the fire,” one

of the deceased ladies neighbour’s told the Namib Independent while walking through the remains of the fire from the night before. According to Walvis Bay Fire Chief, Willie van Zyl about 13

First Shack Fire for Year Claims a Life Continued from Page 1

van Zyl, by the time they arrived on the scene it was too late to save the women from her dwelling where the fire had started, but they managed to assist and save everyone else. The fire on Monday was the first shack fire for the year. Speaking to the survivors while they and other members of the community started a clean-up operations, it was clear that these people have nothing left and nowhere to go. “We have to get this area cleaned up as soon as possible, so we can erect another shack, otherwise we have no place to sleep,” said Cornelia Geinus with her baby on her back. The houses which surrounded the shacks, unfortunately did not go unharmed. The windows burst, window frames burnt, the walls on the outside is blackened by the flames, as well as items inside the houses melted and burned. “The smoke damage in my house is awful. I cannot use a single thing in my house anymore. Everything smells of smoke. My curtains, bedding couches, clothes, carpets, everything. I would also have to repaint inside and out,” said Liisa Ndengu distressed, while standing against the black burns on her wall. According to fire chief van Zyl, they cannot say for certain what had caused the fire. There were also people speculating that the victim came home rather late that evening and started

cooking food, but fell asleep while everything was still busy cooking, which also could have started the fire. Despite the cause in this particular incident, candles, gas stoves and fires remain the main culprits in most of the devastating fires. Just before leaving the overwhelming scene of smoke and ashes, a lady came to introduce the victim’s daughter to the Namib Independent. “This is Hulda,” a lady who also lost her shack said. She said that she lived with her mother, but the night of the fire she stayed with friends. “I cannot believe this happened to my mother. She was always so careful,” Hulda shared a few words in mourning. “I hope the community will be able to help us rebuild our lives,” she said. I feel so lost now.” Van Zyl said that they would like to call on the community to please donate, clothes, toiletries, blankets, mattresses, second hand furniture, and canned food in aid of the fire victims. Anyone with donations can contact Willie van Zyl (0811 220 833) or Dennis Basson (0811 220 888) to assist them. “We have a store room facility at the Fire Brigade building opposite Puma at Kuisebmond, and keep all the goods in that room for Fire victims only,” said van Zyl.

The Cost of Living Siglinde de Villiers In the wake of Namibia’s progress towards globalisation in this information age, a new trend emerges where more and more young adults are reluctant to leave their parents home, however is it by choice or by

necessity? According to a report from the Legal Assistance Centre, fifty-five percent of Namibians still lived with their relatives in 2010 and the figures have undoubtedly increased. Recent newspaper reports have underlined how inflation causes a price

spike in basic living necessities and rental rates, stretching budgets to the limit. “High inflation rates make it increasingly difficult to rent suitable properties on current salaries,” a Walvis Bay resident says. “This struggle becomes even worse if a young couple has children,” he adds. For many young couples, current house prices render buying a home in which to raise their family a farfetched dream. The latest home loan figures speak for themselves. According to local banks, one needs to earn a combined salary of at least N$20 000 to qualify for a loan if a development costs N$650 000. Where does this leave the new generation, couples in their twenties and those just starting out in life? “The general price of living coupled with very costly accommodation is a perfect recipe for only moving out of your parents house once you are about 50,” a coastal resident comments. According to an Estate Agency in Walvis Bay, the average rental for 2 bedroom unit is N$5 500 and a house N$7 500 in Walvis Bay. Where does this leave young adults searching for accommodation? “The high prices of houses and flats are not within most

young adults budget. Unless they are professionals who earn between N$12 000 to N$20 000 per month, they will rather stay with their parents and save for their own place some day,” says the Estate Agency. “In our experience it is 30 - 40 year professionals that will be buying a home for themselves,” the Estate Agency explains. The sad reality of the day is that “many young adult’s salaries do not enable them to obtain suitable accommodation,” says a young father. The Local Estate Agency relies 90% of the time on bank approved loans for their deals to succeed. “Although the inflation rate has an effect on house prices, the huge demand for housing in Walvis Bay has also pushed up the prices. Petrol price hikes also increase building costs.” the Estate Agency says. According to Riaan Keulder, Home Loan Manager for Nedbank, the inflation rate has a huge negative impact on the affordability of housing. “It is important for clients to make sure that they can afford their dream house when inflation gets higher,” Keulder says. He continues to explain that most young couples will start with a very small property that suits their pockets like a one or two

bedroom flat to get a foot in the door. “With the high demand and availability of property in Namibia, we will not be experiencing a decline in the property market,” Keulder adds. He continues to say that property prices are still on the increase, “thus any who will want to own their own home should start planning and saving on a monthly basis.” Many Walvis Bay residents have expressed in a survey that their salaries hardly cover their expenses. “I have no salary satisfaction,” one resident comments. Against this backdrop, what is the possibility of saving when many young couples merely scrape through each month? According to local residents, the scarcity of houses has also lowered the standard of living, for very few are happy with their current living conditions. “The only way to stay on your own is to share with someone, but most of the rentals are in a pathetic condition,” a young Walvis Bay resident observed. Regardless of all the advances in the modern technology age, the chances of owning property as well as the cost of living has not really improved for young adults, compared to ten years ago.

Mayor Warns of

Housing Scam Dorcas Mhungu The Mayor of Walvis Bay, Clr Uillika Nambahu has warned Walvis Bay residents not to fall prey to criminals going round purporting to be municipal employees and registering people for a housing scheme. Addressing council at the first 2014 Ordinary Council meeting, Tuesday, held at the Kuisebmund Council chambers, the Mayor said the council has not appointed anyone to conduct the registering exercise. “These criminally minded individuals are doing this under the guise that they represent the Municipality of Walvis Bay Properties Section. It is further alleged that in registering, members of the community are guaranteed a dwelling when the show houses will ultimately be build,” Clr Nambahu said. She added that while council appreciates the urgency in the need to provide housing for residents, it has not tasked anyone to register people and warned those that are in this scam to stop immediately. The residents are urged to come forward with information so that the culprits will be brought to book. Nambahu said 2014 is a challenging year and notable is the fact that the it’s only one year before the 2015 Millennium Development Goals target and halfway to Vision 2030 goals. She said because of these targets, success stories have been recorded on many fronts such as education, training, and

employment creation. Poverty reduction and smart partnerships. Regardless of these successes, Nambahu said council has encountered numerous hurdles that have hampered progress. Erongo Region Governor, Cleophas Mutjavikua reviewing 2013 in retrospect said, the year was challenging for the region and the effects of the drought that ravaged the country were felt in the urban areas. He applauded the Municipality of Walvis Bay for the fruitful investments that came to the town in 2013. He urged local authorities to remove bureaucratic tendencies that negatively impact god investments such as the Industrial Estate that have significant spin-offs to the residents of the region in terms of downstream industry establishment, employment creation and poverty alleviation. Mutjavikua said the deepening of the harbour project will also avail more spinoffs. “As we know the port of Walvis Bay is the main artery for movement of commercial goods within the SADC region. At its completion the volume is expected to increase.” The governor hopes that Walvis Bay airport will be upgraded this year, “a move that will add value to a myriad of opportunities that is awaiting our region,” Mutjavikua said. He also said the mushrooming of informal settlements is a thorn in the flesh for local authorities and plans to expand residential areas must be communicated to the people and involve them in coming up with suggestions.

Coastal Blood supplies High

Nationally the country has a severe shortage of blood following increased demand during the festive season but the coast is happy with the blood collection, Sister Birgsy of the Walvis Bay Clinic said. Last year, Namibia Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) opened a blood clinic in Walvis Bay ending years of mobile service provided by a team from Swakopmund. “We are happy with the response and support from our donors in the coast. The donors are coming and the past two weeks we have been getting more than 40 donors coming in but we are still appealing for more people to come forward,” Sister Birgsy said. Every time a person donates blood, the lives of three people are saved. Birgsy said besides the feeling of satisfaction that comes after one donates blood, each time

Namsov Boosts Conservation Projects Siglinde de Villiers

Namsov Community Trust propelled conservation to new heights this week when they donated two brand new field vehicles and five lion collars to Save the Rhino Trust and Desert Lion Conservation projects. Jan Arnold, Group CEO and a Trustee of Bidfish explained on Monday what an exquisite country Namibia is with its most unique animals. “Following the international catastrophe of rhino slaughtering in South Africa and elsewhere, we asked ourselves how we can protect the rhino?” Arnold asks. In protecting the last of the free – roaming endangered species on the African continent the Namsov Community Trust thought that field vehicles were of critical value to Namibian conservation projects and the donations were greatly appreciated by Dr Flip Standers from the Desert Lion Conservation (DLC) and Marcia Fargnoli from Save the Rhino Trust (SRT). Standers and Fargnoli both say that the Namibian terrain takes a tremendous strain on vehicles. “This donation makes a huge difference because scientific research is critical for conservation. Nothing can be done without proven reliable data,” Standers says. “As all other animals in the world

are being killed off and decimated left, right and centre, Namibia is really the last safe haven for rhinos,” Fargnoli says. “We are protecting the ancient wisdom of Africa through the rhinos. The wisdom of the world is lost with the wildlife dying off,” she adds. The SRT is monitoring and patrolling a vast area of 25 000 km², protecting more than 200 rhinos. According to Fargnoli, in looking after the rhino, they have started a grassroots initiative in the community, where they have even converted poachers to conserve instead of killing. “We have become the central point to unite all partners in the fight against an international poaching syndicate driven by money to protect the last truly free roaming rhino in the world,” she explains. Arnold added that due to SRT’s conservation office Namibia has the best flourishing rhino population in the world. Vehicles are also crucial in following more than 150 free roaming desert lions. Whereas the global lion population is on the decline, Namibia has the only lion population that is growing. “The biggest contribution we could make towards the DLC is a vehicle uniquely designed for Flip and his needs. Absolutely devoted to protecting the lions, he stays in his

vehicle for up to six weeks, following and researching them,” Arnold explains. “Namibia is the only place in the world where you can find lions on the beach and they are specifically adapted to the desert,” Standers explains. “Conserving them is very difficult, because they roam in communal land and come into conflict with the livelihood of the people.” Standers says that he is very proud to receive local funding for “trying to protect the lion of Namibia by Namibians has great value because local people become involved with conservation.” The Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta says that Namibia is the leading country in the world when it comes to community based conservation. As a result we have little poaching because the community has come to understand the importance

of conserving the biodiversity of their ecosystem. “Gone are the days when you see a snake and crush its head because it’s your enemy. Gone are the days where the lion is seen as a threat and killed. Communities are starting to understand the preserving of life,” Shifeta explains. He continues by saying that Namibias strong conservancy programme boosts the tourism industry, because people

want to see what they have not seen before. “Our wildlife is a very important elements for tourism and the desert lions a national asset,” Shifeta says. He concludes by pointing out that people should understand why it is essential to conserve and that Namibians understand it well. “When you understand you appreciate and when you appreciate you want to save,” Shifeta says.

Young Boy Survives Being Hit By Car Dorcas Mhungu

A nine year old boy cycling with friends along Munganda Street in Fairways was Sunday afternoon knocked down by a car. Rammy, a Walvis Bay Primary School pupil was knocked off his bicycle by while on a leisure cycling exercise with friends.

After hearing a loud bang residents rushed out to see what the cause of the noise was and saw the boy lying on the tarmac with a swelling at the back of his head and bleeding. When the reporter also rushed to the scene, one of the occupants of the car was kneeling and calming the boy and calling for an ambulance to come to the scene of the accident. The windscreen of the car was smashed on the passenger side and sagged. He also asked Rammy if he knew his parents’ number and grimacing with pain Rammy gave his mother’s mobile number and after a short while she arrived and broke down when she saw her son crying and bleeding from the back of his head with a hair raising swelling.

A physiotherapist who lives close to the scene of the accident, Kudakwashe Chikwara was the first to arrive at the scene and rendered the first medical assistance to Rammy . Chikwara after noticing that there was an accident, stopped his car and rushed to get a first aid kit from the boot of his car and attended to Rammy. St Gabriel personnel arrived followed by the police and after taking precautionary measures to protect the boy’s headand neck, Rammy was strapped and rushed to hospital. Rammy’s mother said her son had not suffered any fractures and all X-Rays and scans done were okay and her son though he still complains of headaches, is now out of hospital.

This support was then crowned when Turkey opened their embassy in Windhoek in January 2012 in an effort to establish and develop relations. Piri says that one of the goals of the Turkish Navy Task Group programme is addressing maritime safety issues such as piracy operations. “We also hope to exchange military training between the two countries,” Piri added. According to Liz Sibindi, Corporate Communications Manager at Namoport, the Turkish governor is developing their relationship with Namibia through social responsibility. “The Turkish warships will address areas of need within the region such as schools, community projects and health by donating goods such as computers,” Sibindi says. The Turkish warships will be open to the public. The exact date is still to be decided but it seems like it will be 1 May. “We are really looking forward to their visit, it is important to us and we greatly appreciate it,” Captain AP Amungulu from the Namibian Navy concludes.

Garage Pick-Me-Up Take advantage of an 8-foot stretch of garage wall to tidy up loose odds-and-ends floating around. Employ a metal shelving unit to keep bulk storage supplies within view -- and easy reach. Sort items by categories, placing the heaviest gear on the bottom.

Stack car-care items on a rolling cart you can push right to your vehicle.

Order in the Closet Streamline the appearance of a clothing closet while improving storage capacity and functionality by trading in mismatched hangers for a matched set.

Then take a tip from the organization pros and tie a ribbon around each hanger. When you pull out a garment to wear, remove the ribbon. After six months, donate any clothes still on hangers with ribbons. Closets can be daunting, so break the project into sections. Designate a half an hour every evening for a week to go through a specific type of clothing items -- shirts on Monday, skirts and pants on Tuesday, etc.

Spa-Inspired Storage

Hang mops and brooms on hooks high on the wall and install a small cabinet to serve as a recycling holding zone for items you can't dispose of with regular curbside pickup, such as batteries.

Add a spa-like quality to a bath by reorganising your towel collection. What's in the Plan?

While the contents of each blueprint package vary slightly, each contains detailed, high-quality working drawings that show you exactly how your project is to be built. Your plan package may include the following:

1. Detailed Floor Plans Detailed floor plans show the layout of each floor of the house. Rooms and interior spaces are carefully dimensioned, doors and windows located, and keys are given for cross-section details provided elsewhere in the plans.

2. Exterior Elevations In addition to the front exterior, your blueprint set may include drawings of the rear and sides of your house. These drawings give notes on exterior materials and finishes. Particular attention is given to cornice detail, brick and stone accents or other finish items that make your home unique.

3. Front Perspective The artist's sketch of the exterior of the house gives you an idea of how the house will look when built and landscaped.

4. Foundation Plans This sheet shows the foundation layout including concrete walls, footings, pads, posts, beams, bearing walls, and foundation notes. If the home features a basement, the first floor framing details may also be included on this plan. If your plan features slab construction rather than a basement, the plan shows footings and details for a monolithic slab. This page, or another in the set, may include a sample plot plan for locating your house on a building site. Additional sheets focus on foundation cross-sections and other details.

5. House and Detailed Cross-Sections Large-scale views show sections or cutaways of the foundation, interior walls, exterior walls, floors, stairways, and roof details. Additional cross-sections may show important changes in floor, ceiling, or roof heights, or the relationship of one level to another. These sections show exactly how the various parts of the house fit together and are extremely valuable during construction. Additional sheets may include enlarged wall, floor, and roof construction details.

6. Floor Structural Supports Floor framing details come with plans that have basement and/or crawlspace foundations. Each includes spacing, direction, span, and specifications for floor joists. Beam and window headers, along with necessary details for framing connections, stairways, or dormers are also included.

Why not use the extra time to increase my repertoire of meals. Also, I wanted to see if I could incorporate a few more healthy yet tasty meals into our monthly menu. Lamb Chops with Pomegranate Relish Pomegranate may protect your arteries against LDL ("bad") cholesterol.

Ingredients • 2 large oranges, segmented • 1/3 cup red wine (such as Pinot Noir) • 1/4 cup unsweetened pomegranate concentrate (found at gourmet markets) • 3 tablespoons honey • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced • 1 teaspoon dried oregano • 16 baby lamb chops, frenched (ask your butcher to do it), fat trimmed to 1/8 inch • 1 cup pomegranate seeds • 1/3 cup finely diced Vidalia onion • 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint • 1 1/2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice

Preparation Cut orange segments into 1/8-inch pieces over a bowl; collect juice (about 1/3 cup); set orange segments aside. Whisk orange juice, wine, pomegranate concentrate, 2 tablespoons of honey, oil, garlic and oregano in a bowl. Arrange lamb in a 9" x 13" baking dish; pour marinade over lamb. The Bully in Your School

Siglinde de Villiers Some think it makes them a stronger person. Others carry the scars to haunt them for the rest of their lives. Some stop as time goes by. Others have to make drastic changes. Whichever way, bullies and their victims have been an age –old problem, as old as mankind itself. As more awareness is being created around victims of bullying, it is sad to note that its not the victim with the problem but the bully. Marie Booyson, School Councillor for the Erongo Region says that all bullying is a power trip. “A bully will do whatever needs to be done to get to the top,” she comments. According to M Diedericks, teacher on the Regional School Council, it is very difficult to pinpoint the exact causes of bullying. She explains that some bully because of poor academic performance while others might have watched their parents or older siblings get their way by being angry or pushy. Some children are depressed or upset and unable to deal with their emotions. Others are spoiled and used to having things their way. “All bullies have one thing in common – something or someone is making them feel insecure,” Marie says. “Often children are bullies because of their home

situation, be it no parental involvement or warmth, alchol, financial or family problems such as divorce or death”. Bullying is often defined as a problem attitude fed by the roots of violence and aggression. Needless to say, the entertainment industry is saturated with violence to which children are exposed on a daily basis. “Television and violent PC games have a big influence on children, it teaches them that it there is nothing wrong with violent acts to get one’s way because there are no bad consequences,” Diedericks says. If bullying remains unchecked, it can affect the bully’s adult life for they are more inclined to be depressed, drink excessively, abuse substances and become involved in criminal activities. Bullies and victims alike often end up with trust and relationship issues. Victims health and psychosocial adjustment as adults is inhibited with far reaching social, emotional and psychological effects ranging from low self-esteem to being shy, introverted and depressed. Bianca’s example is one such a case. Every time Bianca’s mother enthusiastically woke her up for school, Bianca would groan softly and pull the pillow over her head: “ ‘Not another day of hell,’ I would moan softly and dread getting up,” she relates sadly when she thinks back to

the bullying she experienced in primary school. In the midst of her social angst, the goal of learning maths, science and language was rattled and the learning process lost its value. “Even today I still carry the gashes deep within me, struggling every day to overcome the low self-image that was inflicted on me years ago,” she says. For *Martin (pseudonym), it lead to declining school performance hampering his social, academic and emotional development. “I changed jobs and moved to the coast last year, little knowing what my son would go through,” relates *Martin’s father. “The other children would call him names, harass him and take away his lunch, threatening him to keep quiet.,” he says. “The situation started to look hopeless when things only got worse after I went to the school to address the problem.” The bitter result was a child, usually eager to learn new things, that started to avoid school at all costs. The far-reaching tentacles of bullying even affects parents, engulfing them into the bubble of

silence, afraid of the consequences should they address the issue and raise awareness. Our day and age of technology brings with it a new problem cyber bullying. Henday Meyer, principal of the International School says that social media is an evil that can be very devastating to many youngsters - often resulting in suicide. “Children bring more and more expensive cell phones to school giving sometimes giving rise to jealousy. Shocking images and videos are send around and often parents are unaware of what is on their child’s phone,” Diedericks says. Meyer says that it is important for schools to promote values of trust so that everyone feels save, loved and respected. “Bullying is a serious offence, we have zero tolerance for it and even expelled a child for cyberbullying,” she says. “Children need to know who to talk to in school and as teachers it is important to build trust with them,” Diedericks adds. “Education is everything, we do not want to stop technological progress but teach mutual respect

and understanding in social circles, grooming them for the life hereafter as responsible young adults.” Meyer explains. Diedericks says that it is essential for children to learn coping skills. According to Booyson, if one gets anxious or upset easily one increases the risk of being a target. The same goes for being alone most of the time or not being confident in standing up for yourself. “Resilience and coping skills can include ignoring bullies, not showing that one is upset, responding evenly and firmly, removing oneself from the situation and talking to an adult,” Booyson says. “A home support system is vital for bullies and victims to learn proper social behavior.” “One can only do so much with a child at school, if there is no reinforcement from home everything collapses,” Meyer says. “We need to go the roots and that includes the parents. They are the most valuable tool a child has. We as teachers cannot take the parents role and its very depressing to note that parents are not involved enough,” Diedericks comments.

Energy saving tips Air Conditioner:

· Clean and inspect your air conditioner filters regularly. · Only cool or heat rooms that are occupied.

Geyser:

· A geyser accounts for up to 40% of your electricity bill. · Ensure that the thermostat is set to no more than 55 Degrees Celsius.

· Reduce the operating time to limit water circulation to twice a day. · Set the pool pump to operate between 24:00 and 05:00.

· The size of the pot should match the size of the stove plate. · Rather use a pressure cooker when preparing food that normally takes a long time to cook.

The world's best-selling doll, Barbie, produced by Matell Inc., is undoubtedly the queen of dolls on the shelves of local retailers and toy stores. It's almost Christmas and if you're the aunt of two pre-teen girls, it's hard to resist the temptation to buy blissfully smiling Barbie dolls (one for each sweetheart), and a few stylish Barbie accessories, for Christmas eve. Barbie dolls make for great gifts for young girls. The doll has great physique, great attitude (always smiling), good taste, stands on tiptoe and is flexible; her arms, legs can bend, etc. It's not a 'boring' doll, you know? The only problem I have with the Barbie dolls available locally, in Namibia (read 'Africa' please), is the wide variety of blonde (blonder, ash blonde, golden blonde, Nordic blonde) Barbie dolls on sale. I'm not going to argue a moot point. Barbie is an American product and was an idea of Ruth Handler, whose husband, Elliott, worked for the Mattel Toy Company. In 1959, while on a trip to Europe, Ruth bought a full-figured doll in Germany for her daughter and suggested to her husband that Mattel Toy Company should look into manufacturing a full-figured doll for pre-teen and teenaged girls in America. The men at Mattel weren't enthusiastic to say the least, but Ruth Handler persisted. The doll was made and baptised 'Barbie' after their daughter, Barbara, and here she is, 54 years later, on Namibian shelves as glamorous as ever. A long time ago, I received a

Barbie doll from Father Christmas. It was Hawaii Barbie and I was thrilled. My Barbie had long blonde hair, long legs, twinkling blue eyes, a straight nose and the whitest set of teeth. She was so charming and sweet. My parents, the poor dears, in their quest to present me with something akin to a culturallysensitive Barbie, bought Hawaii Barbie because she had a slight tan. At that time, you see, AfricanAmerican Christie Barbie and her partner, Steven, weren't available in Namibia and neither was Hispanic Teresa Barbie. A few weeks after receiving my great present, I did a bizarre thing; without thinking clearly, I dyed my Barbie's hair dark brown (nicked some colour from my mother's Clairol tube, stuff reeked like poison, almost blacked-out) and with a black ballpoint pen, changed the colour of her irises. Best Scores in a Long Time Last Saturday a great field of 46 players took part in a sponsored event. Thank very mush to our sponsor that does not want any mention of him sponsoring. We appreciate your long relationship with our club and continuous support.

Distell had a promotion on Pushkin Vodka for the entire day and does it seem the vodka had a big influence on the scores. It has been a long time since we had such good scores by all players with the first six spots all with 40 points and above. Certainly a lot of new handicaps after this weekend. Jaans Stander celebrated his birthday on Saturday and by the looks of his scorecard, well not a lot to celebrate. He played alongside visitor Mannetjies Burger from Windhoek that carded a decent 38 points. New members Pieter van Aarde and Lu-Andre Duvenhage played in their first official competition. The nerves was bothering before T-Off, but Pieter carded a very good 38 points playing from a 22 handicap. Lu-Andre made a decent 28 points also from 22 handicap, which is not too bad for a first time. After proceedings they did not had enough and continued on the practice green trying to sort out the short puts. Rössing’s National Marathon Championship

and Charity Fun Walk Around the Corner The Rio Tinto Rössing Uranium national marathon competition to crown Namibia’s marathon champions takes place on Saturday, 15 February at the athletics stadium in Vineta, Swakopmund. Hosted by the Swakop Striders Athletics Club, this is the 23rd consecutive year that the event, which drew 95 marathon runners in 2013, is sponsored by Rössing. The first prize in the Men’s Open and Ladies Open categories is N$10 000. The National Defence Force athlete, Paulus Iyambo, won the Rössing marathon in 2013 for the second year in a row in two hours, eighteen minutes and sixteen seconds (2:18:16). Other events on the day include a 10km RUN, URANIUM RELAY RUN (a team event over 10 kilometres for uranium company employees) and the popular 5km CHARITY FUN WALK in aid of the Cancer Association of Namibia. The running events start at seven o’clock from the athletics stadium in Vineta. The cut-off time for the marathon is twelve o’clock. Entry fees are N$60 for the marathon (N$100 for international athletes), N$30 for the 10km run (N$50 for international athletes), N$80 per team for the uranium team relay and N$10 per person for the fun walk. The Charity Fun Walk starts at nine o’clock, with the prize-giving ceremony at ten. The event concludes with a prize-giving ceremony with tokens of appreciation for taking part. The fun walk competition categories are; Best costume, Most original hat, Tallest walker, Youngest and oldest walkers and Largest group. Walkers can also take part in a lucky draw scheduled for after the prize-giving event. The theme for this year’s event is CHAMPIONS MAINTAIN THEIR HEALTH - KEEP UP THE PACE. is a great opportunity as a first step on your way to wellness or as further encouragement if you have already embarked on this path.” Registration for the championship takes place at the Vineta athletics stadium on Friday, 14 February, from six- to nine o’clock in the evening. On Saturday, 15 February, registration will take place from six o’clock to sixthirty in the morning. All participants must be at the starting line fifteen minutes before the start of the race for the race rules announcement. Athletes participating in the Marathon and 10km Run events will receive their race numbers and T-shirts at registration.
