Ableism, the discrimination of and social prejudice against peoplewithdisabilitiesbasedonthebeliefthattypicalabilitiesaresuperiorisatitsheartrootedintheassumptionthat disabled people require 'fixing' and defines people by their disability.

The thing about ableism is that it doesn't only discriminate againstpeoplewithphysicaldisabilities.Societyisnotoriousfor going the extra mile and discriminating against people with considerablemental,economicandsocialdisabilities,butthese aremoresubtlebecausetheyaren'tasobvious.

Social Practitioner, Jano Coetzee shed some light on this topic, “It's most apparent in the school system, one of our primary formsofsocialisation,whereinsteadofmeasuringifindividuals haveactuallylearned,learnersaresubjectedtothesameteaching conditions,andsubsequentlypraisedorcriticisedontheirability tolearnunderthosesetconditions,whichcompletelyignoresthe factofindividuallearningstylesandpace.”

TheuppermostneedonMaslow'shierarchyofneedsforagood lifeisself-actualization,whichiswhenapersoncandowhatthey feeltheyare"meant"todoandbewhotheyare"meant"tobe. Ableism is the expectation of - because I can perform a task so cananyoneelse.Thisisatoxicanddetrimentalviewwhichhas many people burning out to reach the quota of performance expected of them instead of what they can manage to achieve. More and more research done on individuals with anxiety and depression has found that mental health conditions can affect a person's confidence and identity at work, capacity to work productively,absencesandtheeasewithwhichtheyperformin general.

It subtlety makes it easily ignored, and even encouraged, but forms of ableism are present in all walks of life, whether it be work, relationships or school. Flooding a little more awareness on it in our daily lives may help us take it a little easier on ourselvesandothers.

In terms of Clause 7 of the Henties Bay Zoning Scheme No 15 promulgated under General Notice 7764 of 2022, notice is herewith given to all interested parties that Messrs Leon Pearson & Anita Pearson owners of Erf 901 zoned “Single Residential”, P.O Box 3959 Walvis Bay, intends to apply to the Council of the Municipality of Henties Bay for Consent use to operate a Self-catering accommodation facility on Erf 901 Hentiesbaai Extension 3, Omaruru street.

Any person(s) who wishes to lodge an objection to the proposed operation of such business from Erf 116, Henties Bay may lodge in writing such objection (s) with valid reasons within 14 days from the date of publication of this notice to the under mentioned address:
