eauty is a work of art and a tool for creativity. It has been one of my biggest obsessions all my life. It is all about building a woman’s self esteem and confidence and it allows woman to be able to express their inner selves. The reason why makeup started was to conceal certain features on the face that people felt insecure about and I can honestly say it has built womans self-confidence and shaped who they are as a person. Make up artists are who people aspire to
be because it is a fun thing to do and also, who doesn’t like to get paid for something they enjoy doing? Turn to page 06 if you want to read more about where the artist started and and how she got to where she is now. More times now, beauty means bleached skin. I had the priviledge to speak to a woman who was skin bleaching at a very young age because no one liked her skin colour. Turn to page 10 to read her story. STEP ONE: Contouring the lip. Use a lip liner or a lip brush outline the shape of your lips perfectly. If you want a fuller effect on your lips, this is the moment when you can go over your natural lip line just a little bit. STEP TWO: Fill in the lips with a colour that is one shade lighter than the shade you have outlined your lips with, this will give the plump effect STEP THREE: Use a make-up wipe over your finger or a flat small brush to correct any mistakes or smudges STEP FOUR: Pat away any excess with the tip of your finger or a sponge to smoothen everything out

Mary Hawi is a 23 year old Makeup artist who ended up graduating with a degree in a whole different sector. She found her passion in something else and is now willing to stick with it. I studied construction magement at university and graduated with a degree. However its not my calling in life. I feel like I still have so much to give and show the world. I’m focused and will prove anyone wrong who has doubted me, because while I’m building my own business and working to live out my dream - they’re working to help others live their dream!
Persuing an interest in makeup is not as easy as people may think. But with the persistent of others, it could leave you deciding on where your career lies. I was always interested in the beauty industry, but it wasnt until 6 years ago where my dad invested in a small makeup kit for me and I started my journey, not professionally but just practising on anyone I could get my hands on. I began to recieve an endless amount of compliments about my style of applying makeup and passion for it. Thats when I knew I could start doing this and actually get paid to do it! I met my husband not long after and he
invested in buying me more luxurious makeup for birthdays, valentines, Christmas! Any holiday you can think of, he will have makeup or gift cards for me to keep building up my kit. He then started marketing my work on social media and came up with my company name “makeupbymbee”
Motivation and dedication is key and it’s always exciting to hear how people strived themselves to be where they are and how they started up. When speaking to Mary Hawi, I found how where my inspiration came from. 06
I used to get my inspiration froim anything and everything, from a flower to reality TV shows. I love how it’s an art, a process to be as creative as you want, and it’s just makeup, it can easily disappear with a face wipe.
Apiring role Models plays a big part in life and it is always nice to be able to look up to someone you aspire to be. I was able to find out how young artists could benefit from an upcoming successful artist. I still have a long way to go to cosnider myself successful at what I do, but I started from scratch amd created a name for myself! If makeup is your passion you will strive to be bigger and better than any other makeup artist out there, put in the time and effort to perfect your craft but never lose focus on why you started in the first place, because you love it and you have a passion for it.
There is always a makeup product that you can never live without. Whether it will be your mascara, lipstick, eyeliner or concealer, there is always something to help enhance what you already have. 3 beauty products I cant live without are brows, mascara and concealer. A good brow pencil to frame the face, black mascara to extend my lashed and give a cute flirty look, last but not least, concaler to cover up any imperfections or to brighten the look of my under eyes.
Building your career can become quite difficult to maintain. With the lack of consistency, could leave you holding back on your career. I started Youtube simply because I was constantly asked questions on how to do certain makeup looks and what products I recommend. I wish I could upload more often and be more come true to be known as a beauty blogger! My page consists of my favourite products, step by step makeup tutorials, weird beauty techniques and “get ready with me” videos.
Creating content for your Youtube can become very time consuming especially when you do freelance for others. but with dedication and commitment, Mary strives to do her best and although she may not upload as much, she brings excitment to others when she posts. It’s very time consuming to film and edit a beauty vieo, because you have to narrow down an hour or 2 worth of footage down to 10 minutes without missing anything vital in the tutorial. However, it is very enjoyable seeing your vision come to life. I do aim to upload at least once a month just to keep my subscribers engaged but I am now aiming to upload once a month with client makeup tutorials, fashion videos and vlogs so should be very exciting!
Signature look is the holy grail of a persons style and it could say something about ones personality. I would describe my style of makeup as very clean yet defined. I like to accentuate my natural features using netural colours such as golds, browns and taupes. I like to look like myself but sometimes, just a tad bit more!

Step-by-Step
Make-up tutorial
Apply concealer to highlight and structure the face using a flat brush
Next you apply contour to structure the face with a stippling brush
Use a wet beauty blender to blend it all out. Dapping motion not rubbing
Next, use a small fluffy brush to blend the nose contour and concealer
Then you will go in with a small detailed brush and bronze powder to enhance the nose contour
Add lipstick, eyeliner and mascara to finish the look

SKIN BLEACHING: C career s Skin lighting is a controversial method that woman use to cover up their imperfections such as birthmarks. For some woman, especially in a predominantly black culture, have a desire of looking fair-skinned which has been going on for a very long time. Some black woman have often grown up with a preconcieved image that being lighter is classed as beautiful. The thought of altering your skin colour might seem a little bit ridiculous - but for many individuals, skin bleaching is another part of their daily care routine. Thousands and Thousands of pounds are spent advertising these creams to woman and young girls but most time, black woman tend to think being lighter could mean a better career success. There are two types of whitening creams - those that ‘lighten’ and those that ‘bleach’. Bleach contains melanin which makes the skin lighter. Lightening creams, however, does not necessarily contain these chemicals, but will llighter the skin with long-term use.

Could it mean a better success? Jasmine is a 24 year old blogger who has over 17,000 subscribers on Youtube. She shares her story about skin bleaching and how it affected her.
I remember, when I was in school, I had a best friend, and everyday we used to compare each other skin tones because back in the days, being lighter was seen as you are more beautiful. My mum has more of a lighter complexion than me and she had a friend who use to skin bleach. I had always wondered why she was so light and it made me think she has skin bleached. I was a young girl, I didn’t really know much. So little me, I thought, let me go into my mums room and take some of the cream and use it everyday on my face until one day, she came knocking on my room door and caught me using the cream. She told me off told me not to use it again. When I was in year 11, my obession came back. I decided to use my aunties cream knowningly it would bleach my skin. Being lighter was popular at the time. I remember all the boys saying how they will only go for girls who are light skinned because they thought black girls were ugly. I felt very low and it made me lose my confidence. I went into primark and I would get holiday sized containers that you put soap and shampoo in I would sneak into my mums room, get the cream, and put a little bit in there and every
morning I would smear it on myself everyday before school. Everyone in school noticed and said my colour has come. That was saying that people would say which meant I looked beautiful. But it got to the point I knew I was screwed. My mum came into my room asking “what have you been using on your skin”. I think she knew deep down but she told me again to not use it. Growing up in a school that

people because of their colour. Kids use to say “If I turn off the light, I wont be able to see you” and I think that contributed to my skin bleaching. At this point, I knew that I should embrace my skin colour and not let these kids get to me. Months went on and I started to appreciate my skin. I have always has confidence in the way I look, but when it came to the colour on my skin, my confidence was not low but it was not high either. I was inbetween with the way I felt about myself. When I got to university, that is when I started hearing “black people are beautiful” and it built my confidence in my colour. I do not
blame anyone but myself because at the end of the day, it was up to me to conform too... There was nothing anyone could tell me today or tomorrow to let me change my skin colour or alter it. So a little advice for anyone who is experience or has expeirence what I have been through and are still doing it. I want you to know that no matter what skin colour you are, you were made like this for a reason. Do not by any means look at what society, media or the news and set our standards according to that. It took me a long to accept myself for who I am but I got there in the end and will not ever let myself become obsessed with it again.
