Your holiday gift can make the magic happen.
Dear Mrs. Donor, One of the things I always do, especially as the holidays approach, is take some time to reflect on the generosity of supporters like you. Because you care, we are able to care — which is why I knew you’d be moved by the story of an elderly woman I met recently. Sally is unlocking treasured memories thanks to the healing power of music. The Alzheimer Society of Toronto launched the music program in January 2013, with the simple premise of reconnecting people with the soundtrack of their lives. We had put together a personalized playlist for Sally, who was in the middles stages of Alzheimer’s disease, with music that had played at her wedding 40 years ago. When we started playing it out loud for her and her husband, Robert, she instantly launched into the most descriptive account of her wedding day, right down to the weather and some of the things her husband had said to her that day. I literally felt like I was at their wedding. It was the music that unlocked all those memories for her. Robert had tears in his eyes, recognizing that his wife was still there and those moments were still there for her even though the disease had started to progress. I have to tell you, it gave me goosebumps. When you see a person escape from the confusion of the disease for a moment, you understand how powerful the music program really is. Right now, our biggest challenge is keeping up with demand for music therapy, and your support will help ensure we don’t have to turn anyone away. As you gear up for the excitement of the holidays with your family, would you put one more gift under the tree for someone suffering with Alzheimer’s? <Your holiday gift will help us buy iPods and over-the-ear headphones, and curate personalized playlists to help them rediscover their most treasured memories and reconnect with loved ones.>

I’ve had the honour of witnessing the healing power of music many times. The impact is immediate and it lasts even after the music stops. You already know the devastating impact of Alzheimer’s. You know it takes away cognitive abilities, memories, judgment and reasoning, altering a person’s moods and behaviour until they slowly lose who they are. You also know it’s not just the person with Alzheimer’s who suffers. Family members watch helplessly as the disease robs them of the person they love, and often the strain of being a caregiver is too much to bear. Right now, more than 40,000 people in Toronto are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. It’s why I’m so grateful that people like you are helping ease their burden. Honouring someone’s life through music is just one way you can help. With you at our side, we can keep providing grief counselling and support groups, art, exercise and dance programs, cognitive and social activities, and much more. This holiday season, please give as generously as you can to help more families navigate the complicated journey that is Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Because you care, we can care. Happy holidays from our family to yours,
Sabrina McCurbin Music Project Manager Alzheimer Society of Toronto
P.S. I know some of our most cherished memories are of the holiday season. As a token of my great appreciation, I’ve enclosed some special holiday cards for you to share and send to your friends and family.
