We use hand tools and horsepower to connect to the rhythms of nature. It’s about slowing down and being more gentle with our land. It’s about being a bit more thoughtful about the way we farm.

The Heartwood story At Heartwood Farm, we farm to inspire change. We’re about healthy, local food. We’re about caring for our land and connecting people to the story of their food and sustainable farming. We like to nurture nature’s amazing connectivity through a bio-diverse ecosystem of vegetable gardens, pasture, livestock, maple sugar bush, working animals, naturalized lands, woodlots, wildlife and people. We offer eco-farm experiential learning and tours – and we invite adults and children to experience this wonderful diversity.

donate some of our produce to community organizations, and partner with them to develop urban community gardens that support access to affordable, healthy food for all. We invite you to collaborate with us (even in a small way) to make that “big picture” connection to issues that matter. It’s not just the fresh veggies you’ll enjoy all season— it’s also about climate change, food ethics, energy use and land stewardship.

Here’s our plan for the season (but of course Mother Nature will have her say, too) june

We’re all about building community, too. Sharing land and collaborating with trained young farmers helps them take the next step to establishing their own farms, and to bringing more food to local folks like you. We also offer our spare time and energy as active volunteers in the local food movement. We foster grassroots farmer-to-farmer networks,

The connectivity that a CSA builds is good for the farmer, good for the eater, good for the earth and good for our communities. Being a member means you can feel good about supporting local farmers while you do some wider good, too. Because when you eat this way, you’re helping build community resilience and food security in a changing world.

WHERE YOU CAN PICK IT UP United Church parking lot at Dublin and Suffolk streets, just north of downtown Guelph

CSAs are all about healthier, tastier food with no chemical residues, picked fresh at peak ripeness and chosen for their vibrant taste and nutrition, not their tolerance to long-distance travel. We’re less about convenience than about quality food that comes from a place you actually know.

Ecologically produced local food Connecting to the story of your supper

The CSA story Community Shared Agriculture (CSA) is an alternative local food system that connects farmers who carefully grow their food to people who care where their food comes from. When you join a CSA, you’re not just a customer buying farm food, you are a member of the CSA itself, partnering with the farmer to create a more vibrant, local food system. By committing to purchasing a share early in the year, your local farmer can do better planning with confidence that the produce will have a timely and appreciative market. As a member, you feel more connected to the joys and challenges of working with nature to grow food. You can also revel in the fact that you’re eating in season, savouring flavours and connecting to the rhythms and cycles of the farming season. Ecological farming methods are the key to our farming operation. We don’t use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. We respect and preserve natural lands and watersheds. We minimize fuel consumption by working with hand tools and horsepower, and because food travels a short distance from farm to table. We
