Greetings. Here is a tutorial for making a charm square house quilt block. The instructions are for making the quilt block you will decide on your quilt layout and finished quilt top. Adapted from video by Gourmet Quilter on You Tube. She has some really great quilting videos using pre-cut fabrics. Be sure to stop by and check out her channel on You Tube. You can purchase a complete quilt pattern from her website here: Houses: 5" Charm Quilt Pattern. Materials: 1.) 2 Charm Square Packs (40 squares per pack for total of 80 charms) 2.) 1 yard - Roof background fabric 3.) Thread, scissors, rotary cutter, mat, iron, sewing machine, seam ripper 4.) Fabrics needed to finish your quilt. You decide on sashing borders, and such. You will need to decide how many blocks needed for finished size quilt you want to make.
Directions: 1.) Roof: 1 charm square makes 2 roofs. Use 20 charm squares. Set aside 20 charms for your doors. Cut main fabric square in half - making two 2.5" x 5" rectangles. You will have 40 rectangles.
From your background fabric cut 4 - 2.5" squares. a.) Place a 2.5" square at end of one rectangle. Mark line from corner to corner - this will be your sew line. Sew two 2.5" squares to each rectangle as shown. Trimming and pressing as you go. Repeat to make roofs for the number of houses you are making.
2.) Doors: Using the charms you set aside in step 1. 1 charm square makes 2 doors. Cut charm square in half to make two 2.5" x 5" rectangles for the doors. You will have 40 rectangles.
3.) Walls: Using your 2nd charm pack Lay 2 charm squares one on top of the other. From this stack cut 2 - 1.75" strips and 1 - 1.5" strip. These strips construct the walls and roof support beam along the top of the house.
a.) Take one 1.75" strip and one of the 2.5" strips cut earlier for the door and sew as shown. Press and repeat for other side of door. Repeat these steps for each house you wish to make.
b.) Now sew the support beams along the top as shown to each of your walls and door units. Press.
4.) Finishing: Sew roof units to door and wall units as shown. Press and your house is done.
