Editorial Mat Su—Alaska’s Hottest Region The Matanuska-Susitna Borough (MSB) is Alaska is Alaska’s hottest region—the fastest growing Borough in Alaska and the 35th fastest growing county in the United States. This growth is attributable to the region’s high quality of life, affordable land and homes. The MatanuskaSusitna Valley was not always Alaska’s fastest growing region. Back in the 1960’s the Matanuska-Susitna valley was home to only about 5,000 people, increasing to over 17,000 by 1980. But since that time, the Mat Su has experienced phenomenal growth; doubling in just a decade to 39,683 residents in 1990, rising again in 2000 to just over 59,000 and again in 2010 to a population of nearly 89,000. Forecasts predict this growth will continue and it likely doubles again in the next twenty-five years. A lot of people ask what’s driving this growth. The answer is simple; a high quality of life, affordable land and housing. According to 2011 statistics from Alaska Housing Financing Corporation, the average new single family home in the MSB was $173,000 less than a new single family home in Anchorage. The Borough has a tremendous amount of potential for commercial and industrial development too. Anchorage 2020 states that the number one problem facing Anchorage is the lack of land for residential, commercial and industrial development. This lack of industrial land was confirmed by the 2009 Anchorage Industrial Land Assessment produced by AEDC. The Port Mackenzie District has 8,942 acres, or 14 square miles of land available for commercial, industrial and office space. Last week’s ground breaking of the Port Mackenzie Rail Extension and Goose Bay prison will create 100’s of new jobs here in the Borough. With the Borough population potentially doubling and Anchorage’s pent up demand for industrial and commercial land it is not hard to envision significant job growth in the southern MSB over the next 25 years. Mat Su will continue to be one of the hottest places in Alaska to live and work for decades to come. Roger Purcell Editor: 50 yr. resident of Alaska, business owner, President Houston Chamber of Commerce, Vice Chair Mat Su Resource conservation and development, Past Mayor and councilmember City of Houston, Alaska)
www.aksalmonalliance.com “We applaud and support Knik Tribal Council, Mat-Su Resource Conservation and Development Council, and Houston Chamber of Commerce efforts to work with ADFG and Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association to increase the abundance of coho and king salmon stocks in the Mat-Su Valley drainage. We wish you every success in this endeavor.”

DON YOUNG
Micah
CONGRESSMAN FOR ALL ALASKA
I was re-elected to the 111th Congress in 2008 to serve my 19th term as Alaska’s only Representative to the United States House of Representatives. My tenure in office has been driven by my deep love for Alaska and the Nation, and my hope to provide all citizens the opportunity for a better life, not just today, but well into the future. I have an impassioned and sincere desire to continue serving Alaska in the United States Congress. My home is a stone’s throw from Alaska’s Yukon River in Fort Yukon, Alaska, a remote village of approximately 700 people located 7 miles above the Arctic Circle in Alaska’s central interior region. It was in Fort Yukon that I met and married a young bookkeeper named Lu. Lu was always at my side and supported me throughout my public service career. Lu and I were married for 46 years, and were blessed with and raised two daughters, Joni and Dawn, and 14 grandchildren. Lu passed away on August 2, 2009 at the age of 67. I thank God for the many years we had together and I miss her every day. I proudly serve as the “Congressman for All Alaska” and love my role as the only Alaskan Representative in Congress. Renewed by the challenges and goals of the 111th Congress and my committee positions, I will continue to champion legislation and funding for programs benefiting Alaska and the nation. My vision remains the same – to provide citizens with the opportunity for a better life not just for today, but also for tomorrow and the future. Paid for by the committee to re-elect Don Young.
Dan Sullivan US SENATOR
Candidate As Alaska’s Attorney General and Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, his accomplishments have focused on protecting Alaskans, promoting energy security and economic opportunity, and fighting against the Obama Administration overreach into our lives and economy.
He is an optimistic, “action conservative” who believes that being an effective public leader is about putting the values of strong families, less government and more freedom, private enterprise, lower taxes, and state sovereignty into action to benefit Alaskans. Dan also has a distinguished record of military and national service. He is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves with 20 years of service as an infantry and reconnaissance officer. He served as a U.S. Assistant Secretary of State focusing on economic, energy, finance, and sanctions and terrorist finance, as well as a Director on the National Security Council staff under Condoleezza Rice when she was the country’s Secretary of State and National Security Advisor. We need leaders in Washington, D.C. who will rise above the negativity and gridlock that is plaguing our country. Dan is an optimist who strongly believes that Alaska and America’s best days are ahead. As a U.S. Senator, he will bring new energy to Alaska and to the U.S. Senate to seize the promising future that lies before us. Paid for by the committee to elect.Dan Sullivan

Roger Purcell State House Candidate Mat Su Borough, City of Houston and District 10 are becoming the cross roads of economic prosperity, not just for the Mat Su but for all Alaska. Port MacKenzie, the Houston rail spur, the Knik Bridge and a commercial truck route to what will be Alaska’s largest deep water port, Little Susitna Chinook/Coho Salmon population restoration project, are all opportunity’s our State has not seen in decades. As Alaskan’s we all want our children and grandchildren to enjoy this great State for decades to come. We need to look to the future now not later and embrace a diversified economy and invest in the ones that make sense Makes sense not just for the economy but for the environment of this great State. We should never have to choose between hunting or fishing or mining and logging. Done responsibly, we can have both, not for us but for future generations. We can accomplish great things for our children and grandchildren with just a small investment today that will pay tenfold for future generations tomorrow. We often overestimate what will happen in the next two years and underestimate what will happen in ten. While we still have the opportunity, let’s not pass up and look back regretting what should have been. Some of Alaska’s greatest opportunities since the pipeline days are right here in our back yard. Roger Purcell Alaska State House Paid for by the committee to elect Roger Purcell

He earned a business and law degree and has extensive experience in business, fishing, construction, tourism and owns a law firm that focuses on municipal and oil and gas law. Married 36 years, Bill and Donna are blessed with two grandchildren and four children. Bill has over 30 years of experience in local government as a commissioner, councilmember, mayor and city attorney and believes that the foundation for a strong, prospering Alaska begins at the local level. As project manager and general counsel for the Alaska Gasline Port Authority, Bill has traveled the globe to meet and negotiate at the highest level on energy project development. A respected voice in Alaska’s oil and gas issues, Bill believes Alaska is doing little to solve the energy crisis in time to save our communities that are at risk. Bill would advance short term solutions now to fill the gap while we develop the world scale gasline project that matches the global opportunity while delivering low-cost energy to Alaskans statewide. Mat-Su Valley Politicians As I near the end of six years as Mayor of the City of Wasilla I have become reflective at many levels. With that are the voices of many people asking me what I may do next.
My name is Bert Cottle and I am running for Wasilla Mayor I was born and raised in Wasilla. This is home. Wasilla Mayor Verne Rupright In order for the City of Wasilla to continue to grow economically and in population, as your next Mayor I believe it is vital for our City Government to be fiscally responsible and to forward fund Capital Projects. Work to improve our Parks and Recreational opportunities, work to improve transportation corridors (City / Borough / State) and improve City services. These are all important issues that contribute to the quality of life for Wasilla residents. Background: Graduate of Wasilla High School,Graduated Trinidad State College - Trinidad, CO FBI Academy graduate, 12 years Office Manager - Petro Star, Inc., Division of Arctic Slope Regional Corporation, 22 years Valdez Police Officer – 8 years as Chief of Police – retired, 3 years Deputy Administrator – City of Wasilla – current Political Experience:11 years Valdez City Council – 10 years Mayor,13 years Alaska Gasline Port Authority, 3 years Alaska Alcohol Beverage Control Board, 3 years Alaska Municipal League Board – President 2010, 3 years Alaska State Homeland Security Affiliations: Pioneers of Alaska – Past President, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Eagles Aerie 1971, Longtime NRA Member, Advocate for Victims of Violence City of Wasilla Projects Completed: New Library land site acquisition , Transfer of Lake Lucille Park from Borough to City of Wasilla, Reactivation of SART (Sexual Assault Response Team) I am asking for your vote October 7th. Paid for by the committee to elect Bert Cottle
I have remained somewhat un-decided. Yet, I have been beset by folks asking me to remain in politics and move up and beyond the local venue. I have never made it a habit to seek the lime light, it’s embarrassing and I view politics with a very jaundiced eye. However, I do believe in public service as a necessary and requisite duty of each of us as citizens. I believe many are in politics for all of the wrong reasons and can count on my fingers those I believe are at the political wheel for the right ones. I don’t get approached by special interests either private or political that thinks I can be unduly swayed or owned. Some that have tried it already know what my reaction will be. I like it that way life has enough struggles. I have gained nothing for myself as Mayor other than experience and a determination to see a job through. That is why I entered politics. There are some out there that strongly dislike me and sorry for you, you don’t know me well enough other than I will speak my mind without arrogance. I believe respect begets respect. Everyone has an opinion and if you can honestly persuade me than I will join you, if not it’s time wasted. So, deciding to stay with being part of any body of citizens navigating our development and social concerns count me in, I will make the honest effort and carry your likes and dislikes to the debate and struggle. This community, State and Nation needs those that will promise fidelity and then keep those promises. I have proven I am one that does........Paid for by the committee to elect Verne Rupright

Why am I am running for office Principled Leadership. Community Focused. I am DeLena Johnson and I am seeking the office of Alaska State Senator District F because Alaska’s government is not working the way it was designed.
Valley’s needs are recognized and addressed Their choices have not been in the best interests of the Valley. The VALLEY comes first with me!! I am also committed to the highest quality education for our children, while recognizing that each child possesses varying talents that require choices in educational opportunities. As an advocate for children, my support for right to life issues is unwavering. I will do all I can to ensure the state does not fund abortions. Personal use fisheries in the valley have suffered as a result of dismal fish returns. I will do what is necessary to reverse this trend. Another huge priority is to resolve the oil and gas taxation issues. . Alaska competes in a world market and we must position ourselves to regain our prominence in the future by exploration and development of our plentiful resources. By doing so, we will create wealth that will provide very GOOD PAYING JOBS and economic stability for families in our community, as well as needed revenue for governmental services. I promise I will stand tall for what is right and work hard every day in the Senate, representing you and your concerns. Mike Dunleavy State Senate Paid for by the committee to re-elect Mike Dunleavy

It is time for solid common sense leadership that understands how to create jobs, keep jobs, and build better opportunities for our citizens. I have dedicated my life to building family, business and community. I understand these issues through experience, not through abstract theory. I have a track record of responsibility in all of my endeavors, and now I want to bring that proven track record and experience to the state Capitol. The legislature is spending at unsustainable levels and it is time for them to be held accountable for deficit spending. A government closest to the people governs best and most economically and that principle is integral to reducing state government spending. Government is growing at unprecedented rates and removing decision making from the local levels. As free citizens, in a nation founded on personal responsibility and liberty, it is time to take government back on all levels. Let the State take care of their appropriate business and let the residents be in charge of their own destinies. It’s important to provide opportunities for the young people of our state to find good-paying jobs so they can stay in Alaska. We need to create more private opportunities for jobs, not create more government hurdles to success. I am running for legislature because I believe in the Alaskan individual spirit. I believe in the job creators, the community builders, I believe in Alaskans. We are the people who can turn our state around. That’s why I am running, and I plan to work to earn your trust, your support, and your vote. If elected Senator, I pledge to work with you to turn our state around. Together, we can make a difference.

Houston is a second class city and home to approximately 2000 people. The city benefits from the proximity of Wasilla (11 miles) and Anchorage (50 miles) for employment, shopping and entertainment while enjoying rural living surrounded by the Alaskan wilderness. As the Mat-Su Borough is the fastest growing area in Alaska, Houston is poised to welcome new development. The City Council makes their decisions today with foresight of expansion opportunities in the near future. Land for building homes and businesses is abundant and affordable. Additionally, a variety of current and future markets for business make the city an attractive place to consider for successful investment. I invite you to visit the City of Houston to experience our local hotspots and stop in or contact City Hall with questions about opportunities for your success in Houston! Diamond Standard LLC 907.232.7137 Anchorage and Mat-Su Hi,I’m Bettie Salmon with Century 21 A to Z Realty I’ve been a licensed realtor in Alaska for nearly 20 years ,the majority of that time has been with the Century 21 system.Over the years I have met some very interesting people from all over .Taking buyers around to view homes has given me an opportunity to see different styles of homes, I’ve picked up decorating ideas, and have discovered color schemes that you would have never thought could go together. But finding buyers the right home that fits their needs is a rewarding experience as is getting the sellers homes sold so they can move on with their lives. So for all your real estate needs - please call us at Century 21 A to Z Realty -- 352-5111 or 352-
