Editorial Common Core amounts to the nationalization of our public school system FROM REP. LORA REINBOLD Common Core amounts to the nationalization of our public school system in a most circumlocutious manner. The Federal Department of Education is specifically prohibited by law from writing educational standards or curriculum. The Gates Foundation however divined a way to circumvent this prohibition by funding regional shell organizations that in turn hired educational consultants to write standards for all fifty states. To encourage states to adopt these national standards, the Federal Government offered a waver to No Child Left Behind and $4.35 Billion in stimulus money in a program called Race to the Top. To qualify, states had to adopt Common Core Standards, submit to computerized testing, and set up a longitudinal database to store huge amounts of educational and personal data. Common Core is a “one size fits all plan” that was originally promised to raise U.S. public education standards to the best in the world and to stem our continual plummet in world education rankings to 20th in reading, 23rd in science, and 30th in math. It was glitzily marketed to save our failing public school system and many from all political parties rejoiced in its shining promise. However, like so many good intentioned centrally planned schemes, the reverse has occurred. Not only that, but Berkeley politics have also been injected into the curriculum. For instance, the maximum level of high school math has been reduced to half of Algebra Two and Geometry. According to Stanford Professor Dr. James Milgram who sat on the Common Core quality control review board and subsequently refused to sign-off on the math standards, completing the new lower level of math proficiency would only give a student a 30% chance in graduating from a California University with a non-STEM degree (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math), or a 3% chance of graduating with a STEM degree. Also, many Common Core aligned textbooks in other subjects have been lambasted as omitting key historical facts such many founding fathers and documents, the Holocaust, as well as promoting Islam, deriding Western religions, and the promulgation of wealth redistribution. Common Core adoption has usurped the Alaska State Legislature’s constitutional authority in public schools. It violates our 4th Amendment privacy rights by employing intensive student and teacher data mining. It violates our 1st Amendment educational freedom. Finally, new adaptive computer testing that gives different questions and weights answers differently based on student race violates the 14th Amendment Equal Protection Clause. Common Core has been adopted by Alaska Commissioner of Education and Early Development Mike Hanley. When the inevitable political backlash occurred, Common Core was merely camouflaged as Alaska Standards. Many of the national Common Core standards were subtly altered using only synonyms so Commissioner Hanley could politically deny to this day that Alaska has adopted Common Core, but then apply for a federal waiver and grant money. Common Core has been adopted in Alaska but has been kept politically hidden like a snake in the grass.
