Editorial From Roger Purcell, President Houston Chamber of Commerce: Chinook/Coho Salmon Population Restoration Projects This morning I drove from Houston to Kenai at the invitation of the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association (CIAA), which has been engaged in salmon restoration projects in the Kenai Peninsula and the Mat Su Valley drainages since 1980. Alan Tellman, Vice President of the Knik Tribal Council, and I made presentations on our Chinook (and Coho) Salmon Population Restoration Project whose objective is “Increasing Native Salmon Escapement”-- to the CIAA Regional Planning Team (RPT). The RPT is comprised of a balance of Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADFG) regional and headquarters representatives and members of the CIAA industry board, including CIAA Executive Director, Gary Fandrei. At this time, initial funds for this promising restoration project have been provided by the Knik Tribal Council, the Mat-Su Resource Conservation & Development Council and the Houston Chamber of Commerce. Arni Thomson, Executive Director of the Alaska Salmon Alliance, provided public comment in support of the concept and with moving forward with the permitting process. Dave Martin, President of the United Cook Inlet Drift netters Association (UCIDA) and an RPT member, also voiced support for the project. Following the presentation, the CIAA RPT unanimously adopted a motion to support the concept and to move forward with the permitting process to enable a startup Moist Air Incubation project for Coho salmon in the Little Susitna River. Finally, after months of conversation, we are extremely pleased with this important first step in a joint effort with ADFG to increase abundance of wild Coho stocks in the Little Susitna River. This effort is widely supported by subsistence, sport, personal use and commercial fishermen as the way forward to increase future salmon stocks in the Mat-Su Valley drainage.”

State Politcians Endorsed by Alaska Home Guide My family and I feel that the time has come for me to seek elected office. I want to bring our district’s needs first, like having more salmon in our rivers, building a gas pipeline, building safe roads, improving Public Safety and helping our seniors.
DON YOUNG CONGRESSMAN FOR ALL ALASKA
I was re-elected to the 111th Congress in 2008 to serve my 19th term as Alaska’s only Representative to the United States House of Representatives. My tenure in office has been driven by my deep love for Alaska and the Nation, and my hope to provide all citizens the opportunity for a better life, not just today, but well into the future. I have an impassioned and sincere desire to continue serving Alaska in the United States Congress. My home is a stone’s throw from Alaska’s Yukon River in Fort Yukon, Alaska, a remote village of approximately 700 people located 7 miles above the Arctic Circle in Alaska’s central interior region. It was in Fort Yukon that I met and married a young bookkeeper named Lu. Lu was always at my side and supported me throughout my public service career. Lu and I were married for 46 years, and were blessed with and raised two daughters, Joni and Dawn, and 14 grandchildren. Lu passed away on August 2, 2009 at the age of 67. I thank God for the many years we had together and I miss her every day. I proudly serve as the “Congressman for All Alaska” and love my role as the only Alaskan Representative in Congress. Renewed by the challenges and goals of the 111th Congress and my committee positions, I will continue to champion legislation and funding for programs benefiting Alaska and the nation. My vision remains the same – to provide citizens with the opportunity for a better life not just for today, but also for tomorrow and the future.
Bill Walker Candidate Alaska Governor
Bill was born in Fairbanks, raised in Delta Junction and Valdez and resides in Anchorage with his wife, Donna. Bill’s parents were Alaskan pioneers. His father was an Alaskan Scout with Castner’s Cutthroats in the Aleutians in WWII and his mother worked on the Al-Can Highway project. Bill worked as a carpenter, teamster and laborer on the Trans-Alaska Pipeline
In order to serve the people of District 10, I must conduct an aggressive campaign. Currently, I’m actively working to develop a program to increase native salmon in Mat Su Rivers. I’m not just talking about it, but I’m doing what is needed to work together to have more salmon for both the sports fisherman and commercial fleet. Since my opponent was appointed to office in 2008 there has been no real improvement on issues vital to our district and our State. My opponent goes to Juneau every year, collects his State paycheck and retirement credit, and gets nothing done. Serving the voters shouldn’t be a three month paid vacation. For these reasons, I feel I must step forward and offer the voters of District 10 a real choice. For this campaign to be successful, it will require a strong and organized grassroots organization. That’s why I’m turning to the people that know me best and inviting them to get involved in my campaign to help make a difference. Thanks in advance for your encouragement and support. Sincerely, Roger Purcell Candidate State House District 10 Paid for by the Committee to elect Roger Purcell
Lesil McGuire Lt. Gov Candidate
construction to pay for his education. He earned a business and law degree and has extensive experience in business, fishing, construction, tourism and owns a law firm that focuses on municipal and oil and gas law. Married 36 years, Bill and Donna are blessed with two grandchildren and four children. Bill has over 30 years of experience in local government as a commissioner, councilmember, mayor and city attorney and believes that the foundation for a strong, prospering Alaska begins at the local level. As project manager and general counsel for the Alaska Gasline Port Authority, Bill has traveled the globe to meet and negotiate at the highest level on energy project development. A respected voice in Alaska’s oil and gas issues, Bill believes Alaska is doing little to solve the energy crisis in time to save our communities that are at risk. Bill would advance short term solutions now to fill the gap while we develop the world scale gasline project that matches the global opportunity while delivering low-cost energy to Alaskans statewide.
Dan Sullivan US SENATOR Candidate As Alaska’s Attorney General and Commissioner of the Department of Natural Resources, his accomplishments have focused on protecting Alaskans, promoting energy security and economic opportunity, and fighting against the Obama Administration overreach into our lives and economy. He is an optimistic, “action conservative” who believes that being an effective public leader is about putting the values of strong families, less government and more freedom, private enterprise, lower taxes, and state sovereignty into action to benefit Alaskans. Dan also has a distinguished record of military and national service. He is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves with 20 years of service as an infantry and reconnaissance officer. He served as a U.S. Assistant Secretary of State focusing on economic, energy, finance, and sanctions and terrorist finance, as well as a Director on the National Security Council staff under Condoleezza Rice when she was the country’s Secretary of State and National Security Advisor. We need leaders in Washington, D.C. who will rise above the negativity and gridlock that is plaguing our country. Dan is an optimist who strongly believes that Alaska and America’s best days are ahead. As a U.S. Senator, he will bring new energy to Alaska and to the U.S. Senate to seize the promising future that lies before us.

Senator Lesil McGuire - Championing a sustainable and vibrant Alaska It was a brisk, windy day in Unalaska last August when Senator Lesil McGuire chaired the Alaska Arctic Policy Commission. Bering Sea fisheries, U.S. Coast Guard Arctic strategies and Native village corporation updates were among the agenda McGuire oversaw. Just weeks later, McGuire was in Calgary working with fellow state legislators from Northwest states and policymakers from Canada addressing economic and resource development strategies relating to Alaska. McGuire was the first woman president of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region in its 20 year history.Senator Lesil McGuire, a 13-year veteran in the Alaska Legislature and lifelong Alaskan, considers her current Rules Committee chairmanship critical to promote responsible resource development and economic legislation. To many women across the state, McGuire is most recognized for her leadership in defining and expanding domestic violence legislation while enhancing victims’ rights. She facilitated the 2013 Alaska Women’s Summit in October at Alaska Pacific University and is doing the same this year. Others may reference her attentiveness to the nexus between and support of both commercial and sport fisheries, stressing sport fishing access particularly in Mat-Su. Many cite her strong advocacy for job growth and economic stability. From the Emerging Technology Fund to the elimination of the 10% tax on geothermal energy, McGuire has worked tirelessly to enhance responsible development. It was McGuire’s SB 309 that created a new incentive to attract a jack-up rig to the Cook Inlet. The legislation also made changes to ACES to improve the economics for small, independent explorers on the North Slope including new incentives against Alaska’s corporate income tax for gas exploration in Cook Inlet. My focus is service above self, and a commitment to all Alaskans for economic sustainability that future generations can enjoy,” said McGuire. Her long history of public and community service certainly manifests such a commitment.

Mat-Su Valley Politicians Endorsed by Alaska Home Guide As I near the end of six years as Mayor of the City of Wasilla I have become reflective at many levels. With that are the voices of many people asking me what I may do next.
My name is Bert Cottle and I am running for Wasilla Mayor I was born and raised in Wasilla. This is home. Wasilla Mayor Verne Rupright In order for the City of Wasilla to continue to grow economically and in population, as your next Mayor I believe it is vital for our City Government to be fiscally responsible and to forward fund Capital Projects. I have remained somewhat un-decided. Yet, I have been beset by folks asking me to remain in politics and move up and beyond the local venue. I have never made it a habit to seek the lime light, it’s embarrassing and I view politics with a very jaundiced eye. However, I do believe in public service as a necessary and requisite duty of each of us as citizens. I believe many are in politics for all of the wrong reasons and can count on my fingers those I believe are at the political wheel for the right ones. I don’t get approached by special interests either private or political that thinks I can be unduly swayed or owned. Some that have tried it already know what my reaction will be. I like it that way life has enough struggles. I have gained nothing for myself as Mayor other than experience and a determination to see a job through. That is why I entered politics. There are some out there that strongly dislike me and sorry for you, you don’t know me well enough other than I will speak my mind without arrogance. I believe respect begets respect. Everyone has an opinion and if you can honestly persuade me than I will join you, if not it’s time wasted. So, deciding to stay with being part of any body of citizens navigating our development and social concerns count me in, I will make the honest effort and carry your likes and dislikes to the debate and struggle. This community, State and Nation needs those that will promise fidelity and then keep those promises. I have proven I am one that does........

Why am I am running for office Principled Leadership. Community Focused. I am DeLena Johnson and I am seeking the office of Alaska State Senator District F because Alaska’s government is not working the way it was designed.
Valley’s needs are recognized and addressed Their choices have not been in the best interests of the Valley. The VALLEY comes first with me!! I am also committed to the highest quality education for our children, while recognizing that each child possesses varying talents that require choices in educational opportunities. As an advocate for children, my support for right to life issues is unwavering. I will do all I can to ensure the state does not fund abortions. Personal use fisheries in the valley have suffered as a result of dismal fish returns. I will do what is necessary to reverse this trend. Another huge priority is to resolve the oil and gas taxation issues. . Alaska competes in a world market and we must position ourselves to regain our prominence in the future by exploration and development of our plentiful resources. By doing so, we will create wealth that will provide very GOOD PAYING JOBS and economic stability for families in our community, as well as needed revenue for governmental services. I promise I will stand tall for what is right and work hard every day in the Senate, representing you and your concerns.

It is time for solid common sense leadership that understands how to create jobs, keep jobs, and build better opportunities for our citizens. I have dedicated my life to building family, business and community. I understand these issues through experience, not through abstract theory. I have a track record of responsibility in all of my endeavors, and now I want to bring that proven track record and experience to the state Capitol. The legislature is spending at unsustainable levels and it is time for them to be held accountable for deficit spending. A government closest to the people governs best and most economically and that principle is integral to reducing state government spending. Government is growing at unprecedented rates and removing decision making from the local levels. As free citizens, in a nation founded on personal responsibility and liberty, it is time to take government back on all levels. Let the State take care of their appropriate business and let the residents be in charge of their own destinies. It’s important to provide opportunities for the young people of our state to find good-paying jobs so they can stay in Alaska. We need to create more private opportunities for jobs, not create more government hurdles to success. I am running for legislature because I believe in the Alaskan individual spirit. Our Builder Partners Alaska Quality Builders Rick and Karrol Johnson P.O. Box 674 Willow, AK 99688-0674 Phone: (907) 495-6200 Fax: (907) 495-6200 “Karrol, we’re just thrilled by this work. Thrilled!! The sunroom has added so much more light and we spend lots of time bird-watching and watching the clouds roll in. I even love looking out at rain storms. I love the way the rain comes off the roof! I’m serious!!”……. Those are just a few of the words John of Palmer, Alaska used to describe their new “West Wing” as he and his wife call it. They are just one of the satisfied clients and now friends, of Rick and Karrol Johnson and Alaska Quality Builders, who have been building and remodeling here in the Mat-Su Valley since 1994. When the Bostrom’s E-mailed Karrol from their Snow Bird Home in Arizona, Ed asked if Alaska Quality Builders would provide them with a free estimate to build their custom ranch style home. Karrol said send us the plans and location! Ed and Aggie’s home was completed and ready to move into. That was in 2005, complete with a field ready to plant strawberry’s for their special Jams and Jellies and Aggies craft room where she makes many items reflecting her Alaska Native Heritage. Then in 2014, when Ed and Aggie decided to sell their custom home and needed some minor repairs, they called Alaska Quality Builders, Rick was there for them as he had been in the past when their home needed repair of hairline cracks due to settling. Ed commented “It’s much more fun to build a home with you guys (Rick and Karrol) than to sell and buy a new one”. “Rick’s follow up and attention to detail and suggestions to make things better are above and beyond”! Rick & Karrol Johnson bring a total of 30 plus years’ experience and commitment to quality with their Alaska owned and operated family business. Rick holds a General Contractor’s License with a Residential Endorsement and many other certifications. His advanced education and certs. include, to name a few, “Advanced Cold Climate Home Building Techniques” & courses in mold control, vital to structures built in Alaska. He holds a BEES (Building Energy Efficiency Standard) Certificate which means he is certified to sign ventilation or thermal compliance PUR 101s. With that and along with certain building specifications, Alaska Quality Builders can offer their clients the option of building a home to meet the 5 or new 6 Star Energy Rating. A 5 or 6 star Energy Rating could qualify a home for a $7,000.00 or $10,000.00 Energy Rating Rebate through Alaska Housing Finance Corporation’s Home Energy Rebate Program. The 6 star rating may be awarded for homes that meet the highest energy rating and therefore qualify for the higher rebate. The “5 star plus” rating could qualify an applicant for the $7,000.00 rebate. Rick and Karrol believe it’s not only their personalized attention, but it’s their commitment to quality and detail and staying current and educated with the new and ever evolving building practices that keeps their clients not only coming back with new projects but telling others. “It’s our satisfied clients and their word of mouth that has made our business the success it is today. There’s no better advertising than a satisfied client talking to his friends and neighbors and passing your name along when someone asked who built your shop or your house or whatever. We are extremely grateful to those that have passed our name along!” “ Our goal is to make sure the project is started and finished with as little stress for our client as possible. Their complete satisfaction IS the final goal.” Rick and Karrol also know how important it is to keep our dollars local. They make every effort to support our valley businesses and always hire locally. All sub-contractors are fully qualified, licensed, bonded, and insured. “Not only have you guys done masterful construction, the attention to detail...so many lovely touches...the work you did on our bathroom remodel last year and this addition this year are so much more beautiful than we’d hoped. Thank you and thank you again. As I told Rick, I really don’t think of him as a builder as much as I think of him as an artist.” “Thanks again...I’m heading into the West Wing now. Have a great night. “ John Palmer, AK A list of all Rick’s completed courses and certifications along with an extensive project and client list is available from them upon request.
